Plastics Are an Insignificant Carrier of Riverine Organic Pollutants to the Coastal Oceans

Evidence that microplastics at environmentally relevant concentration and size interfere with energy metabolism of microalgal community

To address two current issues in evaluating the toxicity of microplastics (MPs) namely, conflicting results due to species specificity and the ecological irrelevance of laboratory data, this study conducted a 10-day exposure experiment using a microalgal community comprising three symbiotic species. The experiment involved virgin and Benzo[a]pyrene-spiked micron-scale fibers and fragments made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP). The results showed that, from a physiological perspective, environmentally relevant concentrations of micron-scale MPs decreased saccharide accumulation in microalgal cells, as confirmed by ultrastructural observations. MPs may increase cellular energy consumption by obstructing cellular motility, interfering with nutrient uptake, and causing sustained oxidative stress. Additionally, MPs and adsorbed B[a]P induced DNA damage in microalgae, potentially further disrupting cellular energy metabolism. Ecologically, MPs altered the species abundance in microalgal communities, suggesting they could weaken the ecological functions of these communities as producers and affect ecosystem diversity and stability. This study marks a significant advancement from traditional single-species toxicity experiments to community-level assessments, providing essential insights for ecological risk assessment of microplastics and guiding future mechanistic studies utilizing multi-omics analysis.

Contamination by microplastics and sorbed organic pollutants in the surface waters of the Tietê River, São Paulo-SP, Brazil

Microplastics (MPs) are particles between 1 μm and 5 mm in size, originating mainly from poor solid waste and effluent management, that can reach water bodies from various sources. In freshwater environments, the occurrence, distribution, and characterization of this new class of pollutants are still little explored, especially in Brazil. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of MPs, as well as the presence and concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) sorbed to these particles in the surface waters of the Tietê River - SP. Surface water samples were collected in duplicate during the dry and wet seasons. The identification and characterization of the MPs was carried out through visual inspection and the chemical identity of the particles was verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). For the analysis of PCBs adsorbed to the MPs, the sample extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The MPs were found in concentrations ranging from 6.67 to 1530 particles m-3, with a predominance of the polymers polyethylene (PE, with 58.17 %) and polypropylene (PP, with 23.53 %). The main morphological categories identified were fragments (56.63 %), fibers (28.42 %), and transparent films (13.06 %). Higher abundances of PCBs were observed in the lower size range, between 0.106 and 0.35 mm. The total concentrations of PCBs in MPs ranged from 20.53 to 133.12 ng g-1. The results obtained here are relevant for understanding the dynamics and level of contamination of MPs and organic pollutants sorbed to these particles in the Tietê River, as well as helping with mitigation measures for the restoration and preservation of this ecosystem.

Microplastics in urban water systems, Tehran Metropolitan, Iran

Urban water systems are potential sources of secondary microplastics (MPs) as well as a distributor of MPs in the environment. In the present study, the presence of MPs in the urban water systems of the Tehran Metropolitan (Capital of Iran) was investigated. In addition, the probable relationship of MPs with different land uses (i.e., residential-commercial, forest, military, and highway) was assessed. The results showed that all parts of Tehran's urban water system in the study area were contaminated with MPs (107.1 ± 39, 37.8 ± 10.5, 48.3 ± 3.1, 46.9 ± 5.6, 59.4 ± 26.5, 1.7, 2.0 ± 0.6, 7.9 ± 1, 1.8 ± 0.2 particles/liter at the residential, integrated, military, forest, highway runoffs, drinking water, groundwater, seasonal river, and the effluent of the wastewater treatment plants; respectively). However, significant differences were found between different land uses. As expected, the residential runoff had the highest rate of MPs pollution, with 107.1 ± 39 particles/liter. According to the obtained results and our estimation, more than five million MPs/day can enter into the water bodies and soil of the study area through the wastewater treatment plants. While there are significant differences in MPs in the different land uses, our findings suggest that residential areas and highways need further attention in controlling the spread of MPs in urban areas.

Impact of microplastics on nicosulfuron accumulation and bacteria community in soil-earthworms system

Microplastics (MPs) widely co-occur with various pollutants in soils. However, the data related to the impacts of MPs on terrestrial animal and microbial properties in pesticide-contaminated soils are few. In this study, the influence of MPs (0.01%, 0.1%, and 1%) on nicosulfuron concentrations in soil (10 µg/g) and earthworms were investigated, moreover, microbial community structure and diversity in soil and earthworm gut were also measured. After 30 days, the concentration of nicosulfuron in soil decreased to 1.27 µg/g, moreover, the residual concentration of nicosulfuron in soil (1%MPs and nicosulfuron) was only 44.8% of that in the single nicosulfuron treatment group. The accumulation of nicosulfuron in earthworms (1%MPs and nicosulfuron) was 7.37 µg/g, which was 1.82 times of that in the single nicosulfuron treatment group. In addition, 1% MPs decreased the richness and diversity of the soil and gut bacterial community in earthworms as well as altered microbial community composition, leading to the enrichment of specific microbial community. Our findings imply that MPs may change the migration of pesticides to terrestrial animal and as well as microbial diversity in earthworms and soil.

Organic pollutants adsorbed on microplastics: Potential indicators for source appointment of microplastics

Pollution by microplastics (MPs) has caused potential threats to the environment. Understanding the sources of MPs in the environment can help control their emissions and reduce environmental risks. Source apportionment of MPs has been conducted according to the characteristics of MPs themselves (such as types of polymers and morphological characteristics). However, the specificity and resolution of the appointments of sources need to be improved. Organic pollutants adsorbed on MPs can be used as a novel and reliable indicator to identify the source of MPs in the environment. In the present work, the analytical methods of MPs and organic pollutants adsorbed on MPs were critically reviewed, and the occurrence of organic pollutants and factors influencing their adsorption on MPs were discussed. Furthermore, the potential applications of organic pollutants adsorbed on MPs as indicators for determining the sources of MPs were highlighted. The study would help recognize the sources of MPs, which will support efforts aimed at reducing their emissions and further pollution of the ecosystem.

Effects of microplastics on the environmental behaviors of the herbicide atrazine in soil: Dissipation, adsorption, and bioconcentration

As an emerging contaminant in soil, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on the environmental behavior of other organic pollutants remains uncertain, potentially threatening the sustainability of agricultural production. In this study, the impact of two kinds of MPs on the environmental behaviors of herbicide atrazine in soil-plant system was investigated. The results showed that MPs significantly reduced the half-life 17.69 ∼ 21.86 days of atrazine in the soil, compared to the control group. Meanwhile, the introduction of MPs substantially increased atrazine adsorption. Additionally, MPs substantially enriched the diversity and functionality of soil microbiome, and the soil metabolic activity was stimulated. Regarding the crop growth, the accumulation of atrazine in maize were significantly decreased by approximately 48.4-78.5 % after exposure to MPs. In conclusion, this study reveals the impact of MPs on atrazine's environmental behaviors in soil and highlights their less effect on maize growth, providing valuable insights for managing MPs contamination in sustainable agriculture.

Spatial distribution, source identification and flux estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been recorded worldwide, information on their presence in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO), especially south of 10°S, remains limited. We investigated the distribution and depositional fluxes of PAHs and OCPs, and the major sources and ecological risks of PAHs in EIO surface sediments from the Central Indian Ocean (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB). The concentration of Σ18 PAHs and ∑10 OCPs had an average value (± SD) of 138.4 ± 52.34 and 0.8 ± 0.20 ng g-1, respectively. PAHs may mainly affected by traffic emission and biomass and wood combustion. Persistent organic pollutant accumulation rate (PAR) and depositional flux (DF) values showed that abundant PAHs might lost during top-down transport. The low trans- chordane (CHL)/cis-CHL ratio and PAR of OCPs may indicated few OCPs were inputted into the EIO recently. The results of binary isotope mixing modeling indicate the predominance of marine organic matter (MOM) in total organic carbon (TOC) of sediments. Fluoranthene (Flour) and pyrene (Py) might have potential biological effects in the EIO. The study provided background values for PAHs and OCPs in the Indian Ocean, and preliminarily revealed the fate of POPs in the open oceans.

Hydrophobic organic contaminants affiliated with polymer-specific microplastics in urban river tributaries and estuaries

Exposure to microplastics (MPs) and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) combined at high concentrations may induce adverse effects to aquatic organisms in laboratory-scale studies. To determine environmentally relevant concentrations of HOCs in MPs, it is essential to understand the occurrence of MP-affiliated HOCs in the aquatic environment. Here we report the occurrences of HOCs affiliated with polymer-specific floating MPs from 12 tributaries and three estuaries in the Pearl River Delta, South China. Target HOCs include nine synthetic musks (SMs), 14 ultraviolet adsorbents (UVAs), 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Average concentrations of MP-affiliated ∑9SM, ∑14UVA, ∑15PAH, ∑8PBDE, and ∑14PCB were 1790, 5550, 1090, 412, and 107 ng g-1, respectively. The average concentrations of HOCs affiliated with MPs of different polymer types were 9790, 7220, 72,500, and 55,800 ng g-1 for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene, polystyrene, and other MPs, respectively. As the concentration of PE was the highest among all MPs at the average concentration of 0.77 mg m-3, the monthly outflow of PE-affiliated HOCs accounted for the largest proportion (46 %) in the outflow of MP-affiliated HOCs (2.8 g) to the coastal ocean via three estuaries. These results suggest that HOCs were highly concentrated in MPs and varied among different chemicals and polymer types. Due to the differences of polymer characteristics and half-life of affiliated chemicals, future toxicology studies concerning exposure to these combined pollutants may need to specify polymer types and their affiliated chemicals.

Polystyrene Nanoplastics in Aquatic Microenvironments Affect Sperm Metabolism and Fertilization of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamark, 1819)

The continuous and unregulated discharge of wastes and pollutants into the aquatic environment has required constant monitoring of the risks incurred by aquatic ecosystems. Alarmism arises from plastic pollution as larger artifacts release nanoscale fragments that can contact free-living stages such as gametes, embryos, and larvae. Specifically, the interaction between spermatozoa, released in water in externally fertilizing species, and the surrounding microenvironment is essential for successful fertilization. Activation and kinematics of movement, proper maintenance of ionic balance, and chemotactism are processes highly sensitive to even minimal perturbations caused by pollutants such as polystyrene nanoplastics. Spermatozoa of Mytilus galloprovincialis (M. galloprovincialis), an excellent ecotoxicological model, undergo structural (plasma membrane ruptures, DNA damage) and metabolic (reduced motility, fertilizing capacity) damage upon exposure to 50 nm amino-modified polystyrene nanoplastics (nPS-NH2). Nanoplastics of larger diameter (100 nm) did not affect sperm parameters. The findings highlighted the negative impact that plastic pollution, related to nanoparticle diameter and concentration, could have on sperm quality and reproductive potential of organisms, altering the equilibrium of aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of microplastics on denitrification and associated N2O emission in estuarine and coastal sediments: insights from interactions between sulfate reducers and denitrifiers

Global estuarine and coastal zones are facing severe microplastics (MPs) pollution. Sulfate reducers (SRB) and denitrifiers (DNB) are two key functional microorganisms in these zones, exhibiting intricate interactions. However, whether and how MPs modulate the interactions between SRB and DNB, with implications for denitrification and associated N2O emissions, remains poorly understood. Here, we simultaneously investigated the spatial response patterns of SRB-DNB interactions and denitrification and associated N2O emissions to different MPs exposure along an estuarine gradient in the Yangtze Estuary. Spatial responses of denitrification to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyadipate/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) MPs exposure were heterogeneous, while those of N2O emissions were not. Gradient-boosted regression tree and multiple regression model analyses showed that sulfide, followed by nitrate (NO3-), controlled the response patterns of denitrification to MPs exposure. Further mechanistic investigation revealed that exposure to MPs resulted in a competitive and toxic (sulfide accumulation) inhibition of SRB on DNB, ultimately inhibiting denitrification at upstream zones with high sulfide but low NO3- levels. Conversely, MPs exposure induced a competitive inhibition of DNB on SRB, generally promoting denitrification at downstream zones with low sulfide but high NO3- levels. These findings advance the current understanding of the impacts of MPs on nitrogen cycle in estuarine and coastal zones, and provide a novel insight for future studies exploring the response of biogeochemical cycles to MPs in various ecosystems.

Plastic debris, persistent organic pollutants and their toxicity impacts in coastal areas in Central Chile

The chemical components of plastic wastes have made their disposal a major economic, social, and environmental problem worldwide. This study evaluated the acute toxicity and genotoxicity of marine plastic debris on the beaches of Concepción Bay, Central Chile, taken during three periods (spring, summer, and winter). An integrated approach was used, including chemical and toxicological data, using the Microtox® test with Vibrio fischeri and SOS chromotest with Escherichia coli and concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The results presented here exclusively include the novel data obtained from the winter campaign, revealing high concentrations of PBDEs (238 ± 521 ng g-1). In addition, the genotoxicity and acute toxicity tests were sensitive for most of the samples studied. This investigation is the first attempt to analyse the toxicity of plastic debris in coastal areas along the Chilean coast.

Efficient photodegradation of polystyrene microplastics integrated with hydrogen evolution: Uncovering degradation pathways

Photocatalytic microplastics (MPs) conversion into valuable products is a promising approach to alleviate MPs pollution in aquatic environments. Herein, we developed an amorphous alloy/photocatalyst composite (FeB/TiO₂) that can successfully convert polystyrene (PS) MPs to clean H₂ fuel and valuable organic compounds (92.3% particle size reduction of PS-MPs and 103.5 μmol H₂ production in 12 h). FeB effectively enhanced the light-absorption and carrier separation of TiO₂, thereby promoting more reactive oxygen species generation (especially ‧OH) and combination of photoelectrons with protons. The main products (e.g., benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, etc.) were identified. Additionally, the dominant PS-MPs photoconversion pathway was elucidated based on density functional theory calculations, by which the significant role of ‧OH was demonstrated in combination with radical quenching data. This study provides a prospective approach to mitigate MPs pollution in aquatic environments and reveals the synergistic mechanism governing the photocatalytic conversion of MPs and generation of H₂ fuel.

Distribution characteristics of photoinitiators and their flux estimation from the Pearl River Delta to the coastal waters of the South China Sea

Photoinitiators (PIs) are widely used in industrial polymerization processes. It has been reported that PIs are ubiquitous in indoor environments and that humans are exposed to PIs, but the occurrence of PIs in natural environments are rarely known. In the present study, 25 PIs, including 9 benzophenones (BZPs), 8 amine co-initiators (ACIs), 4 thioxanthones (TXs) and 4 phosphine oxides (POs), were analyzed in water and sediment samples collected from eight riverine outlets of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Eighteen, 14, and 14 of the 25 target PIs were detected in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples, respectively. The total concentrations of PIs in water, SPM, and sediment were in the ranges of 2.88‒96.1 ng/L, 9.25‒923 ng/g dry weight (dw), and 3.79‒56.9 ng/g dw, with geometric mean concentration (GM) of 10.8 ng/L, 48.6 ng/g dw, and 17.1 ng/g dw, respectively. A significant linear regression was observed between the log partitioning coefficients (K_d) values of PIs and their log octanol water partition coefficient (K_ow) values (R² = 0.535, p < 0.05). The annual riverine input of PIs to the coastal waters of the South China Sea via eight main outlets of the PRD was estimated to be 4.12 × 10³ kg/year, and the ∑BZPs, ∑ACIs, ∑TXs and ∑POs contributed to 1.96 × 10³, 1.24 × 10³, 89.6 and 830 kg/year, respectively. This is the first report of a systematic description of the occurrence characteristics of PIs exposure in water, SPM, and sediment. The environmental fate and risks of PIs in aquatic environments need further investigations.

Photo-aged non-biodegradable and biodegradable mulching film microplastics alter the interfacial behaviors between agricultural soil and inorganic arsenic

The impacts of microplastics (MPs) prevalent in soil on the transport of pollutants were urged to be addressed, which has important implications for ecological risk assessment. Therefore, we investigated the influence of virgin/photo-aged biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and non-biodegradable black polyethylene (BPE) mulching films MPs on arsenic (As) transport behaviors in agricultural soil. Results showed that both virgin PLA (VPLA) and aged PLA (APLA) enhanced the adsorption of As(Ⅲ) (9.5%, 13.3%) and As(Ⅴ) (22.0%, 6.8%) due to the formation of abundant H-bonds. Conversely, virgin BPE (VBPE) reduced the adsorption of As(Ⅲ) (11.0%) and As(Ⅴ) (7.4%) in soil owing to the "dilution effect", while aged BPE (ABPE) improved arsenic adsorption amount to the level of pure soil due to newly generated O-containing functional groups being feasible to form H-bonds with arsenic. Site energy distribution analysis indicated that the dominant adsorption mechanism of arsenic, chemisorption, was not impacted by MPs. The occurrence of biodegradable VPLA/APLA MPs rather than non-biodegradable VBPE/ABPE MPs resulted in an increased risk of soil accumulating As(Ⅲ) (moderate) and As(Ⅴ) (considerable). This work uncovers the role of biodegradable/non-biodegradable mulching film MPs in arsenic migration and potential risks in the soil ecosystem, depending on the types and aging of MPs.

Broadening the lens on bisphenols in coastal waters: Occurrence, partitioning, and input fluxes of multiple novel bisphenol S derivatives along with BPA and BPA analogues in the Pearl River Delta, China

Bisphenol S derivatives (BDs) are being widely used as novel substitutes for BPA and BPA analogues (BPAs), causing pollution in various environmental compartments. However, the occurrence and fate of BDs in coastal waters are currently unknown. To broaden the lens on bisphenols in coastal waters, this study measured a broad suite of 23 bisphenols, including 12 BDs along with BPA and 10 BPAs, in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment from eight major outlets of the Pearl River Delta, China (PRD). In addition to BPA and BPAs, all the 12 BDs were detected in the collected samples. The total concentration of 12 BDs ranged from 1.2 to 25 ng/L (median of 4.3 ng/L) in water samples, 0.80-13 ng/g dw (median of 3.0 ng/g dw) in SPM samples and 0.48-3.7 ng/g dw (median of 0.64 ng/g dw) in sediment samples. For most individual BDs, they had comparable concentrations to individual BPAs. In addition, logK_d values of the frequently detected bisphenols, including BPA, BPS, BPF, 4-((4-Isopropoxyphenyl)sulfonyl)phenol (BPSIP), 2,4-bis(phenylsulfonyl)phenol (DBSP), and other 9 bisphenols, were significantly correlated with their logK_ow values (R² = 0.38, p < 0.05), indicating that the partitioning of bisphenols between the aqueous and SPM phases were strongly influenced by hydrophobic interaction. Based on bisphenols' concentrations in water from the eight outlets of PRD, the estimated input fluxes of novel BDs (1900 kg/y) were found to be even higher than that of BPAs (550 kg/y). This indicates that the riverine input of BDs into the coastal environment is gradually increasing, which should be taken seriously in the future.

Organic Pollutants Associated with Plastic Debris in Marine Environment: A Systematic Review of Analytical Methods, Occurrence, and Characteristics

Plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems, and microplastics (MPs, particles < 5 mm size) may behave as a vehicle of organic pollutants, causing detrimental effects to the environment. Studies on MP-sorbed organic pollutants lack methodological standardization, resulting in a low comparability and replicability. In this work, we reviewed 40 field studies of MP-sorbed organic contaminants using PRISMA guidelines for acquiring information on sampling and analytical protocols. The papers were also scored for their reliability on the basis of 7 criteria, from 0 (minimum) to 21 (maximum). Our results showed a great heterogeneity of the methods used for the sample collection, MPs extraction, and instruments for chemicals' identification. Measures for cross-contamination control during MPs analysis were strictly applied only in 13% of the studies, indicating a need for quality control in MPs-related research. The most frequently detected MP-sorbed chemicals were polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Most of the studies showed a good reliability (>75% of the total score), with 32 papers scoring 16 or higher. On the basis of the collected information, a standardizable protocol for the detection of MPs and MP-sorbed chemicals has been suggested for improving the reliability of MPs monitoring studies.

Potential risk of co-occurrence of microplastics and chlorinated persistent organic pollutants to coastal wetlands: Evidence from a case study

Microplastic (MP) pollution in coastal wetlands is of a global concern. Little attention has been paid to the co-occurrence and corresponding risk of MPs with pollutants, especially refractory chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (CPOPs). A case study of Zhejiang, China was conducted to investigate the occurrence of MPs and targeted CPOPs in coastal wetlands. MPs were 100% detected, but with the lowest abundance in coastal wetlands (average: 666.1 ± 159.1 items kg^-1), as compared to other 6 terrestrial ecosystems (average: 1293.9 ± 163.7 items kg^-1) including paddy field, upland, facility vegetable field, forestland, urban soil, and grassland. A total of 35 kinds CPOPs were also detected in all studied coastal wetlands, with their concentration almost under 10 μg kg^-1 (90.1%). Both enrichment of MPs and CPOPs was affected by sediment TOC, wetland vegetation and land use simultaneously. Interestingly, the occurrence of MPs was significantly correlated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) but not organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Results of co-occurrence pollution assessment of MPs and CPOPs further indicated only Hangzhou Bay showed the ecological risk among all tested wetlands. This would suggest a potential risk of co-occurrence of MPs and modern CPOPs in coastal wetland in economic development area. Possible reason may lie on strong MP vector effect to CPOPs. More attention should thus be paid to other wetlands polluted by MPs and MP-carrying CPOPs in area with relatively great environmental pressure induced by human activity. This study may provide reference for a better understanding with respect to the risk level posed by co-occurrence of MPs and CPOPs to global coastal wetlands.

Potential of microplastics participate in selective bioaccumulation of low-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons depending on the biological habits of fishes

Currently, although the cumulative effects of microplastics (MPs) and organic pollutants (OPs) in the environment and within organisms are being investigated, whether and how MPs participate in bioaccumulation of OPs based on a carrier effect is still unclear. In the present study, water and aquatic organisms were collected from the Pearl River. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and MPs were separated by solid phase extraction and were measured by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Higher PAH concentrations at the river outlet and higher MPs abundance in the inner river were observed, indicating a mismatched distribution between PAHs and MPs. No correlation between MP abundance and PAH concentration in fishes was detected, implying that MPs exerted limited influence on PAH concentrations. Interestingly, bioconcentration factors of one major low-ring PAH (phenanthrene) in fishes showed a significant correlation with MPs abundance, implying that although MPs did not affect the variation in PAH concentrations, they potentially participated in selective bioaccumulation of PAHs. Moreover, significant correlations between MPs abundance and PAHs in fishes with different feeding and living habits were found, indicating that MPs' participation in PAH bioaccumulation was dependent on fish biology and life history. Furthermore, the health risk posed by PAHs in fishes at the river outlet surpassed the line of potential high risk, while the ecological risk posed by MPs at the inner river was in the danger category, indicating the ecological risks posed by PAHs and MPs are uneven along the Pearl River. These findings deepen our understanding of the underlying mechanism of MPs participating in selective bioaccumulation of low-ring PAHs in fishes based on fish biology and point out the present risks posed by these two pollutants in the Pearl River and its estuary, which contribute to aquatic environmental protection and fishery production in this region.

Potential Adsorption Affinity of Estrogens on LDPE and PET Microplastics Exposed to Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents

Microplastics (MPs) are among the most common pollutants in the environment. Because of their small size, availability, and similarity to natural foods, they are commonly ingested by marine organisms. They can cause health problems in living organisms due to their bioaccumulation potential. It is, therefore, unknown whether endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), in particular estrogens, are capable of adhering to the diverse types of MPs found in water. Two MP polymers (low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethene terephthalate (PET)) that could pose a threat to fish were tested for estrogen adsorption. The adsorption capacity of MP pellets was studied for 30 days in the effluent and influent of a wastewater treatment-plant. A laboratory simulation was conducted to validate the field and laboratory findings. We found that the concentrations of five types of estrogen ((diethylstilbestrol (DES), estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2)) were higher in the influent than the effluent streams. LDPE and PET MPs exposed to influent water in the laboratory had higher estrogen levels than wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) pellets. The PET pellets showed the highest adsorption affinity to EE2, while the LDPE pellets showed the highest affinity to E2. As a result, this study provided baseline data to investigate the estrogen adsorption capacity in MPs.

Insights into behavior and mechanism of tetracycline adsorption on virgin and soil-exposed microplastics

Microplastics (MPs), as vectors of pollutants, have attracted extensive attention because of their environmental effects. However, the adsorption behavior and antibiotic mechanism of environmentally exposed MPs is limited. Here, the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) onto virgin and soil-exposed polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) MPs showed that the adsorption capacity of MPs for TC increased after soil exposure, and PLA showed the strongest increase. Soil exposure increased the time to reach equilibrium, and the adsorption rate was controlled by both intraparticle diffusion and membrane diffusion. The isothermal adsorption results of soil-exposed PE and PLA indicated that TC adsorbed on heterogeneous surfaces was affected by the physicochemical adsorption process. The equilibrium absorption capacity of MPs for TC increased by 88% (PLA), 26% (PVC) and 15% (PE) after soil exposure. Soil dissolved organic matter promoted the desorption of TC from MPs, and TC speciation changed with pH. Soil-exposed MPs have the potential to promote TC degradation in solution without the addition of biological inhibitors. Moreover, density functional theory calculations verified that PE and PVC adsorbed TC through physical interactions, while hydrogen bonds were formed on PLA with TC. These results clarified the behavior and mechanisms of TC adsorption on virgin and soil-exposed MPs, which can help in the risk assessment of concomitant pollution of MPs and antibiotics.

Negative effects of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) microplastics on Arabidopsis and its root-associated microbiome

The degradable plastic poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered a potential replacement for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the main component of mulch film. However, it is not clear whether PBAT is harmful to the plant-soil system. Thus, we determined the effects of LDPE microplastics (LDPE-MPs) and PBAT microplastics (PBAT-MPs) on the growth of Arabidopsis. The inhibitory effect of PBAT-MPs was greater than that of LDPE-MPs on the growth of Arabidopsis. Transcriptome analysis showed that PBAT-MPs severely disrupted the photosynthetic system of Arabidopsis and increased the expression levels of genes in drug transport-related pathways. PBAT-MPs increased the relative abundances of Bradyrhizobium, Hydrogenophaga, and Arthrobacter in the bulk soil and rhizosphere soil. The abundances of Variovorax, Flavobacterium, and Microbacterium increased in the plant root zone only under PBAT-MPs. Functional prediction analysis suggested that microorganisms in the soil and plant root zone could degrade xenobiotics. Furthermore, the degradation products from PBAT comprising adipic acid, terephthalic acid, and butanediol were more toxic than PBAT-MPs. Our findings demonstrate that PBAT-MPs may be degraded by microorganisms to produce chemicals that are highly toxic to plants. Thus, biodegradable plastics may pose a great risk to the environment.

Urban natural wetland as a sink for microplastics: A case from Lalu Wetland in Tibet, China

Microplastics have been reported in a wide range of aquatic habitats. The wetlands are considered to be important roles in microplastic migration in water bodies. Nevertheless, knowledge about the occurrence and fate of microplastics in urban natural wetland is still limited for us to better understand how they become a sink of microplastics. In this study, the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in surface water, surface sediments, and sediment cores of the Lalu Wetland watershed, China's highest urban wetland, were investigated in August 2020 and January 2021. The abundances of microplastics in the surface water were 0.06-3.05 MPs/L. Microplastic abundance in the surface sediment and sediment core was 0.01-1.10 MPs/g and 0-16.23 MPs/g, respectively. The abundance of microplastics in the water was significantly lower in the wetland than that in the channel in the watershed. Comparing the wetland inlet and outlet water, the microplastic interception rates were 53% in January and 95% in August. The characteristics and seasonal variation of microplastics in the Lalu Wetland implied that urban natural wetlands were good at intercepting microplastics, and vegetation growth might play an important role on the interception of microplastics by the wetland. The increasing of microplastics from bottom to top in the sediment cores of Lalu Wetland also indicated that the ecological risks of microplastics accumulation in sediments of urban natural wetland required further attention.

Vertical distribution and river-sea transport of microplastics with tidal fluctuation in a subtropical estuary, China

The river-sea transport of microplastic with complex environmental conditions and diverse driving factors has received growing attention in the estuary. This research investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics in the water column and surface sediments and explored the effect of tidal variation on the transport of microplastics in Jiulong Estuary and Xiamen Bay, China. Results show that the microplastics in the estuary (630 ± 515 μm) was significantly larger than that in the bay (344 ± 420 μm, p < 0.01). Low-density microplastics are present in the whole water column, while high-density microplastics was apt to accumulate in the bottom water and surface sediment suggesting biofouling and material density of microplastics synergistic affect its vertical distribution. Every 1-2 h high-frequency samples collected in a whole tide found the increase of fine size (45-300 μm) and decrease of large size (>300 μm) in the flood tide, which implied fine microplastics were easily driven into the estuary from the bay at flood tide than large microplastics. The abundance of microplastics in the sediments decreased in the fast-rising and fast-falling period implies the tide influences the fragmentation and resuspension of microplastics in the estuary. Finally, the flux of microplastics entering Xiamen Bay was 53.5 t/month in the moderate flow month were estimated based on the abundance of different water layers instead of floating microplastics in the surface water.

Source and Distribution of Emerging and Legacy Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have received significant and ongoing attention. To establish favorable regulatory policies, it is vital to investigate the occurrence, source, and budgets of POPs worldwide. POPs including phthalic acid esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and highly chlorinated flame retardants (HFRs) have not yet been examined in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO). In this study, the distribution of POPs has been investigated from surface sediments with the depth of 4369-5742 m in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB) of EIO. The average (±SD) concentrations of ∑₁₁PAEs, ∑₁₁OPEs, ∑₄ BFRs, and ∑₅HFRs were 1202.0 ± 274.36 ng g^-1 dw, 15.3 ± 7.23 ng g^-1 dw, 327.6 ± 211.74 pg g^-1 dw, and 7.9 ± 7.45 pg g^-1 dw, respectively. The high abundance of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAEs, chlorinated OPEs, LMW BDEs, and anti-Dechlorane Plus indicated the pollution characteristics in the EIO. Correlation analysis demonstrated that LMW compounds may be derived from the high-molecular-weight compounds. The monsoon circulation, currents, and Antarctic Bottom Water may be the main drivers. POP accumulation rate, depositional flux, and mass inventory in the Indian Ocean were also estimated.

Microplastics altered contaminant behavior and toxicity in natural waters

Microplastics (MPs) have received an increasing attention because of their ubiquitous presence and aquatic toxicity associated with MPs and MP-bound contaminants in the natural water. This review is to critically examine the chemical additives leached from MPs, the altered contaminant behaviors and the resulting changes in their aquatic ecotoxicity. Available data suggest that heavy metals Zn, Cr, Pb, and Cd regulated and present in plastics at the sub-mg g^-1 to mg g^-1 level can leach a significant amount depending on MPs size, aging, pH, and salinity conditions. MP-bound organic contaminants are primarily additive-derived (e.g., brominated diphenyl ethers, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A) at the µg g^-1 to mg g^-1 level, and secondarily pyrogenic and legacy origins (e.g., PAHs and PCBs) in the range of ng g^-1 and mg g^-1. MPs tend to have higher but more variable sorption capacities for organic compounds than metals (1.77 ± 2.34 vs. 0.82 ± 0.94 mg g^-1). MPs alter the behavior of heavy metals through the electrostatic interactions and surface complexation, while the transport of additive derived organic compounds are altered primarily through hydrophobic effect as supported by a positive correlation (R² = 0.71) between the logarithmic MPs-adsorbed concentrations and octanol/water partition coefficients (K_OW) of organic compounds. MPs constitute less than 0.01% of the total mass of aquatic particulates in typical waters, but play a discernible role in the local partitioning and long-distance movement of contaminants. MPs alone exert higher toxicity to invertebrates than algae; however, when MPs co-occur with pollutants, both synergistic and antagonistic toxicities are observed depending mainly on the ingestibility of MPs, the extent of sorption, MPs as a transport vector or a sink to scavenge pollutants. We finally suggest several key areas of future research directions and needed data concerning the role of MPs in mitigating pollutant leaching, transport and risk under conditions mimicking natural and polluted waters.

Enhancing Scientific Support for the Stockholm Convention's Implementation: An Analysis of Policy Needs for Scientific Evidence

The Stockholm Convention is key to addressing the global threats of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to humanity and the environment. It has been successful in identifying new POPs, but its national implementation remains challenging, particularly by low- and middle-income Parties. Concerted action is needed to assist Parties in implementing the Convention's obligations. This analysis aims to identify and recommend research and scientific support needed for timely implementation of the Convention. We aim this analysis at scientists and experts from a variety of natural and social sciences and from all sectors (academia, civil society, industry, and government institutions), as well as research funding agencies. Further, we provide practical guidance to scientists and experts to promote the visibility and accessibility of their work for the Convention's implementation, followed by recommendations for sustaining scientific support to the Convention. This study is the first of a series on analyzing policy needs for scientific evidence under global governance on chemicals and waste.

Investigation into the impact of aged microplastics on oil behavior in shoreline environments

Understanding the interactions between oil and other particles in shoreline can help determine the environmental risk and cleanup strategy after oil spill. Nevertheless, far less has been known regarding the impact of aged MPs on oil behavior in the shoreline environment. In this study, the aging course of polyethylene (PE) in shaking seawater and ultraviolet (UV) radiation conditions was investigated. The seawater aging mainly affected the physical properties of MPs, increasing its surface pores and hydrophilicity. UV aging significantly affected both the physical and chemical properties of MPs, which increased its hydrophilicity and crystallinity, decreased its mean particle size and introduced oxygen-containing functional groups onto MPs. The two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D COS) analysis confirmed the evolution of oxygen-containing functional groups from C-O to CO. The effects of aged MPs on oil behavior in water-sand system were further explored. The oil remaining percentages were non-linearly changed with the increasing aging degree of MPs. The particle size of the aqueous phase after washing was inversely related to the oil remaining percentage. Further FTIR analysis revealed that C-O and C-H functional groups played an important role in the process of oil adsorbed on MPs.

Spatial distribution and potential sources of microplastics in the Songhua River flowing through urban centers in Northeast China

Microplastics (MPs) have elicited increasing concerns in freshwater systems worldwide. However, little information is available on the MP pollution in the Songhua River, the third largest river in China. And the understanding of the sources and pathways of MPs is limited. In this study, MPs were sampled from river water and wastewater treatment plants in five cities along the Songhua River to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution, characteristics, and potential sources of MPs. Polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene accounted for more than 95% of the total MPs. MP pollution was determined to be spatially heterogeneous. The concentration of MPs in the urban center was always considerably higher than that in the upper reach, and irregular variation was observed from the urban center to the lower reach for each city. Urbanization was one of the primary driving forces of spatial variability. Statistically significant positive correlations (p-value < 0.05) were noted between the average concentration of MPs in river water and population density (p = 0.0023) and number of industrial enterprises above designated size (p = 0.0042) of each city. Line and fiber were the major shapes, and white was the most dominant color. Large (1-5 mm) and small (≤ 1 mm) MP particles accounted for 50% each. Multiple correspondence analysis as a new methodological approach was conducted to elucidate the sources of MPs for the first time. The potential sources of MPs included daily use, fishing, agricultural, and industrial productions. This work provides information about MP contamination for future studies on freshwater systems and new insights into the source apportionment of MPs.

Environmental profile, distributions and potential sources of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) are high lipophilic and degradation-resistant, which have been detected in the air, water, sediment and biota. HPAHs tend to have strong adverse effects on animals and humans. Although we have realized HPAHs are emerging contaminants which needs to be paid attention, there is still a lack of their individual commercial standards. This makes it difficult for understanding HPAHs comprehensively. This review is devoted to collect all the results have reported, and give a systemic look of their global distributions, influence factors and sources. Compared with air, studies on other environmental matrices (water and sediment) are more limited. The researches on organisms are fewest. Comparing the studied congeners, there are more studies on ClPAHs than BrPAHs. Human activities contribute mostly to their occurrence. Further, we then also introduce the toxicity and analytical methods to better understand HPAHs. The future research directions are also provided. Through this review, we can conclude there is an urgent need to develop analysis methods and ecologic risk assessment for better exploring HPAHs. Effective methods should be done to control HPAHs. Therefore, this review can provide a good basis for researchers to understand and control global pollution.

Simultaneous sorption behaviors of UV filters on the virgin and aged micro-high-density polyethylene under environmental conditions

The simultaneous sorption behaviors of four analytes from the UV filters group, benzophenone (BPh), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC), benzophenone 3 (BPh3), and benzophenone 2 (BPh2) on virgin and aged high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a particle size of 125 μm in milliQ and river water were examined in this study. The aging processes of HDPE particles were carried out with the use of simulated sunlight. Conducted research revealed that the sorption of UV filters on HDPE particles follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. A Temkin isothermal model best described the adsorption process for 4BMC, BPh, BPh3, BPh2 on aged HDPE in river water, and 4MBC, BPh, BPh3 on virgin HDPE in milliQ water. The adsorption of BPh2 onto virgin MPs in milliQ water was consistent with the Langmuir isothermal model. Environmental conditions and physicochemical properties of analytes influenced the sorption mechanism between UV filters and MPs particles. It was observed that the main mechanisms responsible for the sorption of BPh, 4MBC, BPh3, and BPh2 on the surface of HDPE are hydrophobic interactions, that may change through the involvement of electrostatic interactions.

Recent Advancements in Plastic Packaging Recycling: A Mini-Review

Today, the scientific community is facing crucial challenges in delivering a healthier world for future generations. Among these, the quest for circular and sustainable approaches for plastic recycling is one of the most demanding for several reasons. Indeed, the massive use of plastic materials over the last century has generated large amounts of long-lasting waste, which, for much time, has not been object of adequate recovery and disposal politics. Most of this waste is generated by packaging materials. Nevertheless, in the last decade, a new trend imposed by environmental concerns brought this topic under the magnifying glass, as testified by the increasing number of related publications. Several methods have been proposed for the recycling of polymeric plastic materials based on chemical or mechanical methods. A panorama of the most promising studies related to the recycling of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS) is given within this review.

Polystyrene microplastics impact the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes in earthworms by size-dependent toxic effects

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are two classes of emerging and prevalent contaminants in terrestrial environments. To date, effects of MPs on the occurrence of ARGs in terrestrial invertebrates remain uncertain. Here we exposed earthworms to a soil amended with polystyrene MPs at two environmentally relevant concentrations to elucidate the occurrence and mechanisms of ARGs in earthworms impacted by MPs with different sizes. Nano-size and 10 mg/kg of 100 µm MPs slightly affected the occurrence of ARGs in earthworms. Highest abundance of ARGs was found in the presence of 10 mg/kg of 10 µm MPs, whereas 100 mg/kg of 10 µm MPs significantly changed the profile of ARGs. Metagenomics sequencing and toxicity tests indicated that MPs caused toxicity and influenced the abundance of microbial community in earthworms, resulting in the changes of ARGs. Results of proteomics and metabolomics demonstrated that 100 mg/kg of 10 µm MPs changed the microenvironment of earthworm gut, built a new homeostatic process, and thus increased the abundance of key bacterial that carried a variety of ARGs. This study highlights the size-dependent toxic effects of MPs and their impacts on the transfer of ARGs in terrestrial environments.
