High Adsorption of Sulfamethoxazole by an Amine-Modified Polystyrene-Divinylbenzene Resin and Its Mechanistic Insight

Adsorption mechanism of cefradine on three microplastics: A combined molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculation study

Microplastics and antibiotics are receiving increasing attention as two emerging pollutants in the aquatic ecosystem. The absorption of antibiotics by microplastics can potentially intensify their impact on marine organisms and human health. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying this interaction remain to be elucidated. Through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this study investigated the adsorption of cefradine (CED) onto three typical microplastics (MPs)-polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyamide (PA). The results of the molecular dynamics simulations showed that the interaction energy between CED and microplastics followed the order of PA-CED > PP-CED > PE-CED, indicating that PA microplastics had the highest adsorption capacity for CED antibiotics. The total energy contribution of the microplastics-cefradine (MPs-CED) systems suggested that the van der Waals and electrostatic interactions were the two primary mechanisms for the adsorption of CED by these three microplastics. In DFT calculations, the adsorption of CED on PA was found to be significantly influenced by both electrostatic and van der Waals effects, while the main driving force in the adsorption of PE and PP is van der Waals effect. In addition, IGMH analysis and AIM topological analysis confirmed that the adsorption of CED on PA relied heavily on the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding and the van der Waals effect. The findings of this study validate the results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, laying a foundation for a comprehensive exploration of the interaction mechanisms between microplastics and organic pollutants by integrating MD simulations and DFT calculations.

Transport of sulfanilamide in saturated porous media under different solution chemistry conditions: role of physicochemical characteristics of soils

Identification of the transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in soils facilitates a better understanding of the environmental fate and behaviors of these ubiquitous contaminants. In this study, the mobility properties of sulfanilamide (SNM, a typical sulfonamide antibiotic) through saturated soils with different physicochemical characteristics were investigated. The results showed that the physicochemical characteristics controlled SNM mobility. Generally, the mobility of SNM was positively correlated with CEC values and soil organic matter content, which was mainly related to the interactions between the organic matter in soils and SNM molecules via π-π stacking, H-bonding, ligand exchange, and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, higher clay mineral content and lower sand content were beneficial for restraining SNM transport in the soils. Unlike Na+, Cu2+ ions could act as bridging agents between the soil grains and SNM molecules, contributing to the relatively weak transport of SNM. Furthermore, the trend of SNM mobility in different soil columns was unaffected by solution pH (5.0-9.0). Meanwhile, for a given soil, the SNM mobility was promoted as the solution pH values increased, which was caused by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between SNM- species and soil particles as well as the declined hydrophobic interaction between SNM and soil organic matter. The obtained results provide helpful information for the contribution of soil physicochemical characteristics to the transport behaviors of sulfonamide antibiotics in soil-water systems.

Enhanced removal performance of magnesium-modified biochar for cadmium in wastewaters: Role of active functional groups, processes, and mechanisms

In this study, a series of biochar products with different active functional groups were developed by one-pot coprecipitation method, including magnesium-modified biochar (MgBC) and functional group-grafted MgBC (Cys@MgBC, Try@MgBC, and Glu@MgBC), for effective adsorption of cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewaters. These biochars exhibited excellent removal performance for Cd(II), particularly Cys@MgBC, whose maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity reached 223.7 mg g-1. The highly active and weakly crystalline Mg could adsorb Cd(II) through precipitation and ion exchange, which was further promoted by the introduced functional groups through complexation and precipitation. After 120 d of natural process, the immobilization efficiency of Cd(II) by Cys@MgBC, Try@MgBC, and Glu@MgBC was still maintained at 98.7%, 95.2%, and 82.7% respectively. This study proposes and clarifies the complexation mechanism of functional group-grafted Mg-modified biochar for heavy metals, providing new insights into the practical application of these biochars.

Preparation of a Series of Highly Efficient Porous Adsorbent PGMA-N Molecules and Its Application in the Co-Removal of Cu(II) and Sulfamethoxazole from Water

This paper presents a highly efficient porous adsorbent PGMA-N prepared through a series of amination reactions between polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) and different polyamines. The obtained polymeric porous materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area test (BET), and elemental analysis (EA). Thereinto, the PGMA-EDA porous adsorbent exhibited excellent ability to synergistically remove Cu(II) ions and sulfamethoxazole from aqueous solutions. Moreover, we studied the effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration of pollutants on the adsorption performance of the adsorbent. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process of Cu(II) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of PGMA-EDA for Cu(II) ions was 0.794 mmol/g. These results indicate that PGMA-EDA porous adsorbent has great potential for application in treating wastewater coexisting with heavy metals and antibiotics.

Leaching of structural Ca2+ ions from a chalcogenide adsorbent by H+ lifts Cs(I) uptake

Acidic wastewater containing radioactive ¹³⁷Cs is difficult to treat by selective adsorption. Abundant H⁺ under acidic conditions damages the structure of adsorbents and competes with Cs⁺ for adsorption sites. Herein, we designed a novel layered calcium thiostannate (KCaSnS) that contains Ca²⁺ as a dopant. The dopant Ca²⁺ ion is metastable and larger than the ions attempted before. The pristine KCaSnS demonstrated a high Cs⁺ adsorption capacity of 620 mg/g at 8250 mg/L Cs⁺ solution and pH 2, which is 68% higher than that at pH 5.5 (370 mg/g), a trend opposite to all previous studies. The neutral condition allowed the release of Ca²⁺ present only in the interlayer (∼20%); whereas the high acidity facilitated the leaching of Ca²⁺ from the backbone structure (∼80%). The complete structural Ca²⁺ leaching was made possible only by a synergistic interaction of highly concentrated H⁺ and Cs⁺. Doping a large enough ion, such as Ca²⁺, to accommodate Cs⁺ into the Sn-S matrix upon its liberation opens a new way of designing high-performance adsorbents.

Naphthenic Acids Removal from Model Transformer Oil by Diethylamine Modified Resins

Resins have enormous potential in the removal of naphthenic acids (NAs) from transformer oil due to their rich porosity and high mechanical and diversified functionality, whereas their poor adsorption capacity limits application. In this work, the polystyrene–diethylamine resin (PS−DEA−x) was prepared by grafting diethylamine (DEA) onto chloromethylated polystyrene (PS−Cl) resin to efficiently adsorb cyclopentane carboxylic acid from transformer oil for the first time. The characterization analysis results indicated that amine contents were significantly enhanced with the increase in DEA. Particularly, resin with a molar ratio of 1:5 depending on chloromethyl to DEA (PS−DEA−5) exhibited the highest amine contents and efficient adsorption of cyclopentane carboxylic acid (static adsorption capacity up to 110.0 mg/g), which was about 5 times higher than that of the pristine PS−Cl. The thermodynamic and kinetic studies showed that the adsorption behaviors could be well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm equation and pseudo−second−order rate equation. Moreover, it was found that 1 g of the PS−DEA−5 can decontaminate about 760 mL transformer oil to meet reuse standards by a continuous stream, indicating its potential application in industry.

New insights into adsorption mechanism of pristine and weathered polyamide microplastics towards hydrophilic organic compounds

The widespread coexistence of hydrophilic organic compounds and microplastics (MPs) in the environment has greatly increased their associated environmental problems. To evaluate the potential carrier effect of oxygen-containing MPs on coexisting pollutants, adsorption behaviors of four hydrophilic organic compounds (benzoic acid, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamerazine and ciprofloxacin) on MPs (pristine and weathered polyamide (PA)) were studied in the aquatic environment. The results showed that the surface morphology, size, oxygen content, molecular structure, surface charge and crystallinity of PA were changed after weathering, and the weathering degree of PA treated with heat-activated potassium persulfate was the highest. The main adsorption mechanisms included hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, charge-assisted hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction. Hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction contributed to the adsorption, while electrostatic interaction weakened the adsorption under the specific pH conditions. The formation of charge-assisted hydrogen bonding (CAHB) was also verified through pH influence experiments, and this force can overcome the electrostatic repulsion. The high adsorption of KPA (PA weathered by K₂S₂O₈) under alkaline conditions was well explained by the formation of homonuclear CAHB due to the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups compared to the other three PA. Additionally, weathering did not always enhance the adsorption of hydrophilic organic compounds on PA, which was related to the changes in surface charge, crystallinity and hydrophilicity of PA. Overall, the physical and chemical properties (e.g., specific surface area, oxygen content, molecular structure) of PA after weathering and its trend of adsorption were different from other oxygen-free MPs in this study. This work can provide basic data for environmental risk of MPs and contribute to clarify and understand the processes of oxygenated MPs in the aquatic environment.

Biochar composite derived from cellulase hydrolysis apple branch for quinolone antibiotics enhanced removal: Precursor pyrolysis performance, functional group introduction and adsorption mechanisms

In this study, magnetic biochar (MAB) and humic acid (HA)-coated magnetic biochar produced from apple branches without and after cellulase hydrolysis (HMAB and CHMAB, respectively) were prepared and tested as adsorbents of enrofloxacin (ENR) and moxifloxacin (MFX) in aqueous solution. Compared with MAB and HMAB, novel adsorbent CHMAB possessed a superior mesoporous structure, greater graphitization degree and abundant functional groups. When antibiotic solutions ranged from 2 to 20 mg L^-1, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of CHMAB for ENR and MFX were 48.3 and 61.5 mg g^-1 at 35 °C with adsorbent dosage of 0.4 g L^-1, respectively, while those of MAB and HMAB were 39.6 and 54.4 mg g^-1, and 44.7 and 59.0 mg g^-1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model presented a better fitting to the spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of ENR and MFX onto CHMAB was achieved at initial pH values of 5 and 8, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of ENR and MFX decreased with increasing concentrations of K⁺ and Ca²⁺ (0.02-0.1 mol L^-1). Synergism between the pore-filling effect, π-π electron-donor-acceptor interactions, regular and negative charge-assisted H-bonding, surface complexation, electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic interactions may dominate the adsorption process. This study demonstrated that a novel magnetic biochar composite prepared through pyrolysis of agricultural waste lignocellulose hydrolyzed by cellulase in combination with HA coating was a promising adsorbent for eliminating quinolone antibiotics from aqueous media.

Interface engineering of p-p Z-scheme BiOBr/Bi12O17Br2 for sulfamethoxazole photocatalytic degradation

The Z-scheme heterojunction has received widespread attention due to it can effectively improve the photocatalytic activity of photocatalytic materials. In this paper, a p-p Z-scheme hererojunction composed of bismuth oxybromide and oxygen-rich bismuth oxybromide was synthesized via facile one-step solvothermal method. Based on the characterization results, we demonstrated that the BiOBr/B_i12O₁₇Br₂ Z-scheme heterojunction was synthesized by intimate interface contact between BiOBr and B_i12O₁₇Br₂ p-type semiconductors. This endowed the heterojunction composite with excellent photogenerated carrier transfer ability and photogenerated electron-hole separation performance compared with pure BiOBr and B_i12O₁₇Br₂ materials, which were proven by photoelectrochemical measurement, photoluminescence spectra. The maximum photocurrent of BiOBr/Bi₁₂O₁₇Br₂ (≈0.32 μA) is approximately 3 times that of the original BiOBr (≈0.08 μA ) when light is irradiated. In addition, the BiOBr/B_i12O₁₇Br₂ p-p Z-scheme composite photocatalyst had good photocatalytic activity for sulfamethoxazole, with ·O₂^- free radicals as the main active species. It could photodegrade 99% sulfamethoxazole under light irradiation at 365 nm, and its degradation rate was approximately 13 times that of BiOBr and 1.5 times that of B_i12O₁₇Br₂ materials. Notably, BiOBr/B_i12O₁₇Br₂ exhibited an excellent performance after 4 consecutive runs. Besides, the possible degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole was proposed. This work has reference significance for the construction of p-p Z-scheme heterojunctions and the treatment of environmental contaminants.

Quantitative assessment of interactions of hydrophilic organic contaminants with microplastics in natural water environment

The interaction between microplastics (MPs) and hydrophilic organic contaminants (HOCs) in natural water environment has recently raised great public attentions due to the potential toxicity to humans. However, the quantitative assessment is less studied. In this study, the interaction between ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ofloxacin (OFL) (two important HOCs) and virgin and aged polystyrene (PS) was investigated. The aged PS showed higher adsorption rate and capacity than the virgin PS, due to its larger surface area and more O-containing groups. The pH-dependent adsorption of CIP was higher than OFL on both virgin and aged PS; the maximum adsorption for both HOCs occurred at pH 5. The sequential orders of functional groups for the adsorption were discovered according to the study by the 2D correlation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Several mechanisms existed for the interaction: (1) at 3.0 < pH < 5.0, the electrostatic attraction (EA) was inhibited while H-bond (HB) was dominant, accounting for > 60% of the total uptake; (2) at 5.0 < pH < 8.0, the contribution of EA increased to around 50-60% while HB decreased to 30-40%; (3) at 8.0 < pH < 10.0, EA, HB and π-π conjugation caused 30-40%, 25-40% and 20-45% of the total uptake, respectively; (4) at 10.0 < pH < 12.0, π-π conjugation accounted for 90-100%. Notably, higher adsorption of CIP was mainly attributed to the presence of secondary amino groups and its higher pK_a value, correspondingly leading to the additional ordinary HB and negative charge-assisted HB, and EA interactions with PS. This study further provides clear evidences on the risk of MPs and HOCs on humans and aqueous living organisms.

Effect of pH-Dependent Homo/Heteronuclear CAHB on Adsorption and Desorption Behaviors of Ionizable Organic Compounds on Carbonaceous Materials

Herein, the adsorption/desorption behaviors of benzoic acid (BA) and phthalic acid (PA) on three functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at various pH were investigated, and the charge-assisted H-bond (CAHB) was verified by DFT and FTIR analyses to play a key role. The results indicated that the adsorption order of BA and PA on CNTs was different from K_ow of that at pH 2.0, 4.0, and 7.0 caused by the CAHB interaction. The strength of homonuclear CAHB (≥78.96 kJ·mol^-1) formed by BA/PA on oxidized CNTs is stronger than that of heteronuclear CAHB formed between BA/PA and amino-functionalized CNTs (≤51.66 kJ·mol^-1). Compared with the heteronuclear CAHB (Hysteresis index, HI ≥ 1.47), the stronger homonuclear CAHB leads to clearly desorption hysteresis (HI ≥ 3.51). Additionally, the contribution of homonuclear CAHB (≥52.70%) was also greater than that of heteronuclear CAHB (≤45.79%) at pH 7.0. These conclusions were further confirmed by FTIR and DFT calculation, and the crucial evidence of CAHB formation in FTIR was found. The highlight of this work is the identification of the importance and difference of pH-dependent homonuclear/heteronuclear CAHB on the adsorption and desorption behaviors of ionizable organic compounds on carbonaceous materials, which can provide a deeper understanding for the removal of ionizable organic compounds by designed carbonaceous materials.

Direct Spectroscopic Evidence for Charge-Assisted Hydrogen-Bond Formation between Ionizable Organic Chemicals and Carbonaceous Materials

The direct evidence for the formation of charge-assisted hydrogen bond (CAHB) between the charged groups of ionizable organic chemicals (IOCs) and carbonaceous materials with similar proton affinity remains elusive. We therefore selected three pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) as representative IOCs to provide the direct evidence of CAHB formation between IOCs and functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and its intensity/contribution to PC sorption on CNTs by NMR, FTIR, and DFT analyses. Sorption of PCs on functionalized CNTs resulted in the FTIR characteristic peak that appeared at a higher frequency (3787 cm^-1) and the ¹H NMR characteristic peak that emerged at an extremely low-field region (<18.0 ppm), which can be used as the direct spectroscopic evidence for CAHB formation. Both homonuclear CAHB (HM-CAHB, e.g., [O-H···O]^-) and heteronuclear CAHB (HT-CAHB, e.g., [N⁺-H···O^-]/[O-H···N]⁺) exhibited a much higher sorption energy (|E_ads| ≥ 56.24 kJ/mol) than ordinary hydrogen bond (OHB, |E_ads| ≤ 6.136 kJ/mol), leading to a greater sorption contribution (HM-/HT-CAHB ≥ 42.3%, OHB ≤ 36.5%) and irreversibility (hysteresis index: HM-/HT-CAHB ≥ 1.69, OHB ≤ 0.43) of PCs on CNTs. This work presents the direct evidence for CAHB formation between IOCs and CNTs, which is significant for understanding and predicting the environmental fate and risk of IOCs, thus providing new insights for controlling their pollution using specifically designed carbonaceous materials.

Novel sphere-like copper bismuth oxide fabricated via ethylene glycol-introduced solvothermal method with improved adsorptive and photocatalytic performance in sulfamethazine removal

In this research, ethylene glycol-introduced solvothermal method was employed to fabricate a novel sphere-like CuBi₂O₄ material to improve the adsorptive and photocatalytic performance of conventional CuBi₂O₄. A series of characterization has been applied to investigate properties of the obtained CuBi₂O₄ (CBO-EG3). Compared with conventional rod-like CuBi₂O₄ (CBO), the synthesized sphere-like CBO-EG3 exhibited rough surface, larger specific surface area, and more effective separation of photo-generated carriers, which overcome main shortcomings of CuBi₂O₄. The removal efficiency of typical antibiotic sulfamethazine (SMZ) reached almost 100% under the optimal experimental conditions. About 70% of SMZ could be adsorbed in 180-min dark reaction, with residual being photodegraded in 30 min. CBO-EG3 showed much higher photocatalytic efficiency than pure CBO, attributing to its highly effective photo-induced electron and hole separation. Meanwhile, substantial adsorption of pollutant on CBO-EG3 contributed vastly to removal of SMZ, photo-generated electrons and holes inclined to react with adsorbed SMZ directly, and photocatalytic process was mainly led by non-radical reaction. Elimination of SMZ in actual water samples and recycling experiment were also performed to evaluate CBO-EG3's practical application potential. This study delivered a method to promote CuBi₂O₄'s adsorptive and photocatalytic ability, which could expand the application of CuBi₂O₄ in wastewater treatment.

New Polymeric Adsorbents Functionalized with Aminobenzoic Groups for the Removal of Residual Antibiotics

In this paper, we present the synthesis of new polymeric adsorbents derived from macroporous chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymers with different cross-linking degrees functionalized with the following aminobenzoic groups: styrene-6.7% DVB (PAB1), styrene-10% DVB (PAB2), and styrene-15% DVB (PAB3). The new polymeric products, PAB1, PAB2, and PAB3, were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and EDX, SEM, and BET analysis, respectively. The evolution of the functionalization reaction was followed by FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed a decrease in the intensity of the γCH2Cl band at 1260 cm-1, and, simultaneously, the appearance of C=O carboxylic bands from 1685-1695 cm-1 and at 1748 cm-1. The thermal stability increased with the increase in the cross-linking degree. The data obtained from the EDX analysis of the novel cross-linked copolymers confirmed the functionalization with aminobenzoic groups through the presence and content of nitrogen, as follows: PAB1: N% = 0.47; PAB2: N% = 0.85; and PAB3: N% = 1.30. The adsorption performances of the novel polymeric adsorbents, PAB1, PAB2, and PAB3, were tested in the adsorption of three antibiotics, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and amoxicillin, from aqueous solutions, by using extensive kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies. The best adsorption capacity was demonstrated by the tetracycline. Amoxicillin adsorption was also attempted, but it did not show positive results.

Enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by a modified nano zero-valent iron with a β-cyclodextrin polymer: Mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Rising concern about emerging and already persisting pollutants in water has urged the scientific community to develop novel remedial techniques. A new group of remediation methods is based on the modification of nanoscale zero-valent iron particles (nZVI), which are well known for treating volatile organic compounds and heavy metals. The properties of nZVI may be further enhanced by modifying their structure or surface using "green" polymers. Herein, nZVI was modified by a β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP), which is considered an environmentally safe and inexpensive adsorbent of contaminants. This composite was used for the first time for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Coating by β-CDP not only enhanced the degradation of SMX (>95%, under 10 min) by the nanoparticles in a wide pH range (3-9) and enabled their efficient reusability (for three cycles) but also made the coated nZVI less toxic to the model bioindicator microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata. Moreover, degradation products of SMX were found to be less toxic to Escherichia coli bacteria and R. subcapitata microalga, contrary to the SMX antibiotic itself, indicating a simple and eco-friendly cleaning process. This research aims to further stimulate and develop novel remedial techniques based on nZVI, and provides a potential application in the degradation of antibiotics in a wide pH range. Moreover, the wealth of available cyclodextrin materials used for surface modification may open a way to discover more efficient and attractive composites for environmental applications.

Advances on tailored biochar for bioremediation of antibiotics, pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants from aqueous and solid phases

Biochar is gaining incredible importance for remediation applications due to their attractive removal properties. Moreover, it is becoming ecofriendly, cost-effective and sustainable bioadsorbents towards replacing expensive activated carbons. Studies reveal biochar effectiveness for removal of important and potentially severe organic pollutants such as antibiotics and pesticides. Recent research advancements on biochar modification (physical, chemical and biological) opens greater opportunity to form tailored biochar with improved surface properties than their native forms for offering better removal efficiencies. Further attentions paid towards emergent new modification methods to cover broad-spectrum pollutants using tailored biochar. Current review aims to summarize recent updates upon biochar tailoring, comparative account of tailored biochars removal efficiencies with respect to their native forms and to provide in-depth discussion covering specific interactions of tailored biochars with antibiotics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and pesticides for their effective removals and degradation from polluted environments. Application of inducer compounds e.g., peroxymonosulfate and sodium percarbonate further improved the biochar role towards degradation of toxic organic pollutants into their less or nontoxic forms. Biochar engineered with specific metals enable them for the same role without inducer compounds. Moreover, microbial interactions with biochar not only improve the bioremediation level further but also degrade the pollutants from the environment and open up better environmental and socio-economic prospects. Application of green, cost-effective and sustainable biochar for remediation of environmentally potential organic pollutants offers economical treatment methods as well as safe environment. These benefits are inline with global trends towards developing a sustainable process for biocircular economy.

Efficient adsorptive removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from water by alkali and bimetallic salts co-hydrothermally modified sludge biochar

Fluoroquinolones are one of most commonly used antibiotics for preventing and treating bacterial infections and their unsatisfactory removal by conventional wastewater treatment technology have aroused widespread attention. A novel adsorbent of KMSBC was the first time synthesized and tested to adsorb three typical fluoroquinolone antibiotics of CIP, NOR and OFL from water. The characterization analysis showed that KMSBC possessed the superior porous structure, abundant functional groups and greater graphitic degree. Together with kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and critical factors (e.g., biochar dose, reaction time/temperature, fluoroquinolone antibiotics concentration, pH, co-existing ionic strength and HA concentration) analysis suggested that pore filling, π-π conjugation, H-bonding and electrostatic interaction were the key mechanisms for fluoroquinolone antibiotics adsorption by KMSBC. KMSBC exhibited the optimum adsorption performance at pH = 5 despite the adsorbates. The maximum adsorption capacity of KMSBC for CIP, NOR and OFL were 49.9, 55.7 and 47.4 mg/g at 25 °C, respectively. Also, KMSBC exhibited the good magnetic sensitivity and stability with the leaching concentrations of Fe were far below than environmental limit (GB5749-2006) at various pH (from 3 to 12), ionic strength and HA concentrations. Additionally, KMSBC performed a stable sustainable adsorption performance in recycles by NaOH regeneration. Thus, KMSBC had the potential to be a promising adsorbent for fluoroquinolone antibiotics removal with favorable adsorption capacity, environmental security and easy regeneration performance.

Critical review on adsorptive removal of antibiotics: Present situation, challenges and future perspective

This review gives a proper dedicated understanding of the contamination level, sources, and biological dangers related with different classes of antibiotics in consumable water. The literature on the adsorption of antibiotics is relatively uncommon and developments are still under progression, especially for adsorbents other than activated carbon. Also, adsorption technique has already been applied vastly for water treatment. Notwithstanding significant progressions, designed natural wastewater treatment frameworks are just bearably effective (48-77%) in the expulsion of antibiotics. Hence, the compilation of available literature especially for antibiotic adsorption was much needed. Moreover, the conventional adsorbents have some limitations of their own. In this study, the main focus was laid on unconventional adsorbents such as Biochar, Biopolymers, Carbon Nanotubes, Clays, Metal-Organic Frameworks, Microalgae and some miscellaneous adsorbents. The mechanism of adsorption by the unconventional adsorbents includes electrostatic interactions, π-π bonding, weak Van der Waal forces, H-bonding and surface complexation, which was similar to that of conventional adsorbents and hence these unconventional adsorbents can easily replace the costlier conventional adsorbents with even better adsorption efficiency. This paper also briefly discussed the thermodynamics, adsorption equilibrium; isotherm and kinetics of adsorption. This review paper seizes the critical advances of adsorption phenomenon at various interfaces and lays the foundation for current scenario associated with further progress. Besides, this study would help in understanding the antibiotic adsorption, cost estimation and future goals that will attract the young the researchers of this field.

Enhanced propagation of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes in municipal wastewater by microplastics

Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging global concern as they are abundant in the environment and can act as vectors of various contaminants. However, whether and how MPs can be vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), especially extracellular ARGs (eARGs), remains far from explicit. This study addresses the adsorption of both intracellular ARGs (iARGs) and eARGs by four types of MPs in municipal wastewater, and then explores the potential horizontal gene transfer of iARGs and eARGs exposed to MPs. Results indicate that though MPs significantly adsorbed both iARGs and eARGs, eARGs were adsorbed with a significantly higher fold enrichment (2.0-5.0 log versus 2.0-3.3 log) and rate (0.0056 min^-1 versus 0.0037 min^-1) than iARGs. While all four types of MPs adsorbed ARGs, polypropylene MPs showed the highest adsorption capacity for ARGs. Background constituents such as humic acid and antibiotics significantly inhibited adsorption of iARGs, but not eARGs on MPs. The presence of sodium chloride didn't significantly affect adsorption of iARGs or eARGs. The adsorption of ARGs was well explained by the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) interaction energy profile. Higher eARG adsorption was attributed to a lower energy barrier between MPs and eARGs than that between MPs and iARGs. Exposure to MPs enhanced horizontal gene transfer of both iARGs and eARGs by 1.5 and 2.0 times, respectively. The improved contact potential between donors and recipients, as well as the increased cell permeability of recipients induced the improved horizontal gene transfer by MPs. This study underscores the need to address ARG propagation through adsorption to MPs.

Removal of nano-sized polystyrene plastic from aqueous solutions using untreated coffee grounds

Nanoplastic (NP) pollution is an emerging global concern due to its adverse impact on aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, the removal of aqueous NPs from aquatic environments remains a significant challenge. This study aims to investigate whether polystyrene NP in aqueous solutions can be removed using coffee grounds. Due to the difficulty associated with directly measuring NP levels and monitoring the biosorption process, we used fluorescent-orange amine-modified polystyrene beads (fluo-NP, 100 nm) to evaluate the efficacy of the biosorption process. The factors including pH, coffee grounds concentration, initial fluo-NP concentration, and contact time were optimized on batch experiments. In addition, the isotherm and kinetic models were employed to clarify the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms. It was found that aqueous fluo-NP particles were effectively adsorbed onto the coffee grounds over a wide pH range (pH 2-12), with a coffee ground concentration of 25 g/L leading to the maximum adsorption efficiency (74%). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the coffee grounds was 4 mg/g for a reaction time of 40 min. Coffee grounds demonstrated the highest removal efficiency when the initial fluo-NP concentration was 100-125 mg/L. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model and pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption isotherm and kinetics well, respectively, and the adsorption at high fluo-NP concentration range was favorable. Moreover, the results suggest that the mechanism lies in the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between surface functional groups of the coffee grounds and the fluo-NP particles. Given that there is an urgent need to remove NPs from aqueous systems, this study illustrates that it is possible to use coffee ground biowaste for this purpose.

Interaction of Microplastics with Antibiotics in Aquatic Environment: Distribution, Adsorption, and Toxicity

As two major types of pollutants of emerging concerns, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) coexist in aquatic environments, and their interactions are a source of increasing concern. Therefore, this work examines the interaction mechanisms of MPs and ATs, and the effect of MPs on ATs bioavailability and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) abundance in aquatic environments. First, the mechanisms for ATs adsorption on MPs are summarized, mainly including hydrophobic, hydrogen-bonding, and electrostatic interactions. But other possible mechanisms, such as halogen bonding, CH/π interaction, cation-π interaction, and negative charge-assisted hydrogen bonds, are newly proposed to explain the observed ATs adsorption. Additionally, environmental factors (such as pH, ionic strength, dissolved organic matters, minerals, and aging conditions) affecting ATs adsorption by MPs are specifically discussed. Moreover, MPs could change the bioaccumulation and toxicity of ATs to aquatic organisms, and the related mechanisms on the joint effect are reviewed and analyzed. Furthermore, MPs can enrich ARGs from the surrounding environment, and the effect of MPs on ARGs abundance is evaluated. Finally, research challenges and perspectives for MPs-ATs interactions and related environmental implications are presented. This review will facilitate a better understanding of the environmental fate and risk of both MPs and ATs.

Multiple adsorption systems and electron-scale insights into the high efficiency coadsorption of a novel assembled cellulose via experiments and DFT calculations

In view of the characteristics of heavy metal and antibiotic compound pollution in the Pearl River Basin in Guangzhou. More scientifically modified cellulose, named HVUC, is characterized by multiple hydrophilic groups, long chains and large space and displays highly efficient adsorption of both Cd and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and good adaptability in a wide pH range and at high ion strength. Furthermore, the coadsorption mechanism was elaborated from multiple angles. Multiple adsorption experiments explained the competition and synergy effect in the adsorption process. The electrostatic potential maps indicated that HVUC had advantageous adsorption sites for both Cd and SMZ and that electrostatic interactions had the greatest impact on the adsorption of Cd and SMZ. The electron density and differential charge density images proved that Cd more easily overlapped electron clouds and transferred electrons with HVUC and that SMZ^- and could act as a bridge for SMZ^-. The equilibrium configuration indicated that the formation of Cd-SMZ^- complexes led to the bending and folding of SMZ^-, which was not conducive to overall adsorption when SMZ^- was close to HVUC and could lead to the release of SMZ^- when Cd was close to HVUC, which confirmed the proposed mechanism of complexation-decomplexation-complexation.

Selective adsorption of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from a binary system using lignin-based adsorbents: Quantitative analysis, adsorption mechanisms, and structure-activity relationship

A series of actinia-shaped lignin-based adsorbents (LNAEs) featuring lignin (LN) as the core and grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the tentacle were designed and fabricated. Two fluoroquinolones (FQs) with similar molecular structures, ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), were used as targets to study the selective adsorption performance of LNAEs associated with the structural effects of the LN-based adsorbents in FQs binary aqueous system. The adsorption of the two FQs by LNAEs complied with the competitive Langmuir isothermal model, and showed selective removal of CIP over OFL due to the additional negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond (CAHB) formed between the carboxyl group of LNAEs and the secondary amino group of CIP, in addition to the effects of electrostatic attraction and normal hydrogen bonds, according to quantitative studies and density functional theory analysis. A binary nonlinear model based on phenomenological theory was applied to study the effects of PAA branched-chain length and distribution on the selective adsorption performance of the LN-based adsorbents. Accordingly, the branched-chain distribution played a more important role and higher distribution density of branched PAA could expose more adsorption sites on LNAEs' surface and improve the adsorptive selectivity. This study offers a well understanding of the structure-activity relationship of the surface grafting-modified adsorbents in binary pollutant systems and fundamental guidance for the exploitation and design of novel and efficient adsorbents.

Efficient removal of sulfamethoxazole by resin-supported zero-valent iron composites with tunable structure: Performance, mechanisms, and degradation pathways

Nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded polymer-based composites (D201-nZVI) are effective materials for the removal of inorganic contaminants from water. However, the removal efficiency of organic contaminants and the role of the distribution of nZVI in the performance of the composites still remains unclear. Herein, four resin-supported nZVI composites with different nZVI distributions (D1, D2, D3, and D4) were prepared and used for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The four composites, D1-D4, demonstrated a high efficiency of SMX removal (99.02%, 94.61%, 89.00%, and 86.28%, respectively, at pH 5.0). In addition, the performance of D201-nZVI only dropped by approximately 10% after five cycles, indicating its strong potential for practical application. On the basis of kinetic and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectral analyses, this study showed that the formation of hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) and superoxide radicals (⋅O₂^-) is the main mechanism of SMX degradation. Finally, based on six major degradation intermediates of SMX, five possible degradation pathways were proposed, including the coupling of N-centered radicals, demethylation, the isomerization of isoxazole rings, the oxidation of amino groups, and the S-N bond cleavage in the D201-nZVI system. These results are not only important for better understanding the role of Fe distribution in the removal of SMX but are also crucial for the potential application of D201-nZVI composites with a different Fe distribution in many other scenarios.

Amino groups modified SBA-15 for dispersive-solid phase extraction in the analysis of micropollutants by QuEchERS approach

In the analysis of contaminants in food products, sample preparation is performed by proper adsorbents, whose choice is crucial to eliminate matrix interference. In this work we modified SBA-15 adsorbents by functionalization with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (SBA-15-APTES) and N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]aniline (SBA-15-AN) aiming to use them for the first time in the clean-up step of a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) extraction of micropollutants from strawberry, a sugar rich fruit. After physico-chemical characterization by nitrogen adsorption, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, the adsorption capabilities of SBA-15 sorbents and possible interaction mechanisms were studied at different pH (2.1-8.5) for glucose, sucrose and fructose at concentrations characteristic of those found in strawberries. The performance of the two SBA-15 sorbents was compared with that of commercial PSA (primary secondary amine), usually proposed in QuEChERS protocols. Both SBA-15 materials exhibit up to 30% higher adsorption than PSA, suggesting their possible QuEChERS application. Synthesized SBA-15 adsorbents were hence used as innovative dispersive sorbents in the QuEChERS extractions of 13 PAHs and 14 PCBs from strawberry. For PCBs, SBA-15-AN provides better matrix removal than PSA and comparable extraction recoveries around 90%. For PAHs, the use of SBA-15-AN has the advantage of lower relative standard deviation (7%) than PSA (19%).

Assessment of sulfamethoxazole removal by nanoscale zerovalent iron

Removal of pharmaceutical compounds, such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from the aquatic environments, is critical in order to mitigate their adverse environmental and human health effects. In this study, the effectiveness of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles for the removal of SMX was investigated under varying conditions of initial solution pH (3, 5, 7 and 11) and nZVI to SMX mass ratios (1:1, 5:1, 10:1, 13:1, 25:1). Batch kinetic studies, which were well represented using both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models (R² > 0.98), showed that both solution pH and mass ratios strongly influenced SMX removal. At a fixed mass ratio of 10:1, removal efficiencies were higher in acidic conditions (83% to 91%) compared to neutral (29%) and alkaline (6%) conditions. A similar trend was observed for removal rates and removal amounts. For mass ratios between 1:1 and 10:1, an optimum pH existed (pH 5) wherein highest removal efficiencies were attained. Increasing the mass ratio above 10:1 resulted in virtually complete removal efficiencies at pH 3 and 5, and 70% at pH 7. Analysis of SMX speciation and zeta potential of nZVI particles provided insights into the role of pH on the efficiencies, rates and extents of SMX removal. Total organic carbon analysis and mass spectrometry measurements of SMX solution before and after exposure to nZVI particles suggested the transformation of SMX via redox reactions, which are likely the dominant process compared to adsorption. Five transformation products were observed at m/z 156 (TP1), 192 (TP2), 256 (TP3), 294 (TP4) and 296 (TP5). TP1, TP2 and TP3 were further identified using ion fragment analysis. Overall, results from this study indicate a strong potential for SMX removal by nZVI particles, and could be useful towards identifying reaction conditions for optimum SMX transformation.

Unveiling the correlation of Fe3O4 fractions upon the adsorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole on magnetic activated carbon

Magnetic particles (MPs) assisted powdered activated carbon (PAC) is a promising composite material for adsorption removal of micropollutants. The fractional amount of Fe₃O₄ impacts the balance between adsorption capacity and magnetic property of magnetic activated carbons (MPACs), and therefore it affects the extent of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Here, five MPACs with different mass ratios of Fe₃O₄: PAC (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8) were prepared using a hydrothermal method and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The spherical shaped MPs were monolayerly deposited on PAC with fewer pores blocked when the mass ratio of Fe₃O₄ was comparatively low (≤ 20%). MPAC6 (14.3 wt% of Fe₃O₄) had the best overall performance, with good Langmuir adsorption capacities for SMX (173.0 mg g^-1) and excellent magnetic properties (9.0 emu g^-1). Corresponding adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The negative ΔG⁰ (-25.6 to -27.2 KJ mol^-1) and ΔH⁰ (-9.14 KJ mol^-1), and positive ΔS⁰ (0.55 KJ mol^-1 K^-1) properties indicated the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process accompanied by an increase in entropy. The strong cation-assisted electron donor-acceptor and hydrophobic interactions were contributed to a high extent of SMX removal in the pH range of 2-4. Formation of negative charge-assisted H-bonds was responsible for the adsorption of hydrophilic SMX^- on negatively charged MPAC6 in alkaline solution. Desorption and regeneration experiments showed SMX removal was still 92.3% in the 5th cycle. These findings give valuable insights into the interactions between SMX and MPACs and guide for choosing sustainable magnetic adsorbents for environmental applications.

Removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics using actinia-shaped lignin-based adsorbents: Role of the length and distribution of branched-chains

A series of actinia-shaped lignin-based adsorbents (LNAEs) featuring lignin(LN) as the core and grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the tentacle were designed and fabricated. LNAEs were applied to remove ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from water, and their maximum adsorption capacities were 0.835 and 0.965 mmol/g at pH 6.0, respectively. However, their adsorption capacities were up to about 20 % and 31 % reductions in the present of NaCl and humic acid, respectively. Electrostatic attraction (EA) and hydrogen bonding (HB), including ordinary HB and negative charged auxiliary HB, were mainly involved in adsorption. Experimental and calculation results indicated HB contributes more than EA. The effects of two structural factors of LNAEs, namely, PAA branched-chain length(L) and distribution density(D), on the adsorption performance associated with HB and EA, were quantitatively discussed using a binary nonlinear model based on phenomenological theory. The fitting results were completely consistent with the experimental findings. D was more efficient than L in promoting HB and EA in adsorption due to the cooperative effects of adjacent branched-chains and enhanced activity of terminal groups. This study provides a better understanding of the structure-activity relationship of surface grafting-modified adsorbents and fundamental guidance for the exploitation and design of novel and efficient adsorbents.

Solution pH affects single, sequential and binary systems of sulfamethoxazole and cadmium adsorption by self-assembled cellulose: Promotion or inhibition?

A new self-assembled cellulose (SACS) containing multi-functional amine, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups was successfully obtained through etherification, cross-linking and grafting processes. Then, the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and Cd(II) onto SACS at pH values of 3, 5.7 and 7.5 was systematically investigated by batch experiments of single, sequential and binary systems, characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The presence of Cd(II) decreased the adsorption of SMZ because of hydrophilic site competition, while SMZ inversely increased the adsorption of Cd(II), which was attributed to bridging and especially to electrostatic shielding effects; moreover, both the inhibitory and synergistic effects were more obvious in the binary system and at a pH of 7.5. There was a dynamic balance between the inhibitory and synergistic effects that depended on the system, pH value and concentration ratio. DFT results further indicated that SMZ^- more easily coordinated with Cd(II) at sulfonyl oxygen and nitrogen sites, and the cationic bridge of Cd(II) with SMZ^- mainly occurred in the sequential system. Moreover, a complexation-decomplexation-complexation balance of SMZ^- and Cd(II) probably occurred in the binary system.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and sulfadiazine on phosphorus-containing stalk cellulose under different water pH studied by quantitative evaluation

To improve the high-value application of corn stalk, phosphorus-containing stalk cellulose (PFC) was prepared, characterized, and utilized for the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and sulfadiazine (SD), with maximum adsorption capacities of 1.385 and 2.527 mg/g at pH 7. As expected, the adsorption efficiency of PFC was strongly affected by pH, and the preferential adsorption order of SMZ^- (SD⁰) > SMZ⁰ (SD^-) > SMZ⁺ (SD⁺) was obtained from the experimental results and due to the charges of PFC and the SMZ and SD species. Furthermore, these results were qualitatively linked to the adsorption mechanism, e.g., π⁺-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA), anion-π bond electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions. In particular, the adsorption mechanism was further characterized in terms of structure and analyzed systematically using density functional theory (DFT), frontier orbital theory (FOT), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, with the aim to explain the theoretical calculation and experimental results. As a result, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) orbitals revealed the key role of the rings and functional groups of PFC and SMZ (or SD) and validated the optimized structures of PFC⁺ sulfonamides (SAs)⁺, PFC^- SAs⁰, and PFC^- SAs^-, in which their binding energy values, energy gaps, and relevant molecular lengths determined their stability. Additionally, the van der Waals (vdW) energy confirmed the effect of various interactions on adsorption.

Highly selective removal of Ni(II) from plating rinsing wastewaters containing [Ni-xNH3-yP2O7]n complexes using N-chelating resins

Inorganic complexants, such as ammonia (AA) and pyrophosphate (PP), are often present alongside heavy metal ions in alkaline plating rinsing wastewater. We investigated the removal capacity of Ni(II) from waters containing [Ni-xNH₃-yP₂O₇]ⁿ complexes by chelating and ion-exchange resins in sole and dual-ligand systems. D463 (containing iminodiacetic groups) and PAMD (possessing polyamine groups) exerted superior performance under all conditions. Ni(II) adsorption on D463 decreased with AA and PP by 10.3% and 64.4%, respectively. Conversely, the adsorption on PAMD increased by 57.3% and 75.8%, respectively. PAMD exhibited high selectivity toward anionic [Ni-PP] species over free PP. More Ni(II) was captured by PAMD in the dual-ligand systems than sole systems, while the case for D463 was opposite. As confirmed by species tracking and DFT/XPS analyses, complexes breaking-Ni²⁺ capture was the dominant mechanism for D463, while the dual-site (non-charged and protonated amines) interactions with NiP₂O₇^2- on PAMD promoted its adsorption. The tandem combination D463-PAMD was the optimal mode to remove the most Ni(II). The actual wastewater test demonstrated that >210 BV effluent met the limit of 0.1 mg Ni(II)/L and the eluent contained 15 g Ni(II)/L. This study guides the application of chelating adsorption processes in the advanced treatment of plating rinsing wastewaters.

Degradation of sulfamethazine by biochar-supported bimetallic oxide/persulfate system in natural water: Performance and reaction mechanism

The rapid development of aquaculture results in the increased concentrations and kinds of antibiotics in water environment, and the sharply growing antibiotic contamination has caused increasing concerns. Herein, an innovative sulfamethazine (SMT) removal approach was developed by activation of persulfate (PS) using biochar-based materials prepared by co-precipitation and pyrolysis: Fe-Mg oxide/biochar (FeMgO/BC). Experiments on the activation of PS by FeMgO/BC under different factors were carried out. The involved mechanism and degradation pathway were also studied. Notably, the SMT removal rate reached 99 % under the optimum reaction condition, while the TOC removal efficiency reached 77.9 %. PS was activated by FeMgO/BC and the dominated active radical was SO_4•^-. Fe²⁺ from FeMgO and the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of biochar contributed to the production of SO_4•^-. The dehydrogenation, bond cracking and unsaturated bond addition process occurred in the degradation of SMT. Furthermore, FeMgO/BC exhibits excellent reusability and stability. Considering the outstanding actual water application performances and the weak biotoxicity, FeMgO/BC shows a promising potential in the removal of antibiotics under actual water conditions.

Red mud modified sludge biochar for the activation of peroxymonosulfate: Singlet oxygen dominated mechanism and toxicity prediction

In this paper, red mud-sewage sludge derived biochar (RSDBC) was synthesized and employed as the heterogenous activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. With the incorporation of red mud, 82.5% degradation of SMX was achieved by RSDBC/PMS system in a process dominated by ¹O₂, which was attributed to the participation of oxygen vacancy, ketone groups and graphitic carbon. On the other hand, in the absence of red mud, OH and SO₄^•- were dominantly accounted for SMX degradation in sewage sludge derived biochar (SDBC)/PMS system. In this case heterogeneous Fe species, ketone groups and graphitic carbon were responsible for PMS activation. Due to the different Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), effects of reaction conditions including initial pH, common anions and natural organic matter (NOM) were not in full accord. Besides, Fe leaching from RSDBC (0.67 ppm) was much lower than that of SDBC (3.07 ppm), leading to a better reuse ability for RSDBC. Less degradation intermediates were disclosed in RSDBC/PMS system, along with lower residual toxicity. In addition, eco-toxicity of all the intermediates was predicted by ECOSAR program for the further understanding of the detoxification of SMX. Advantages of RSDBC/PMS system as disclosed in this paper further suggest its potential full-scale application of environmental remediation.

An innovative in vitro assay to study the effects of aromatic pollutants on porphyrin systems

Interactions between aromatic pollutants (APs) and porphyrin nucleus as physiological receptors have a significant effect on biological functions of porphyrin-based systems in organism. However, the details on the interaction at molecule level are still elusive. Herein, interaction mechanisms between two typical APs (methylene blue, MB and benzo[a]pyrene, B[a]P) and meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (TCPP) as physiological receptors were systematically investigated. Adsorption behaviors of TCPP to B[a]P was dominated by pi-pi interaction, while interaction between TCPP and MB coupled with a multi-force field including hydrophobic, pi-pi, electrostatic, and H-bonding interactions. The relative contributions of these four forces obeyed an order: H-bonding > pi-pi > electrostatic > hydrophobic, regardless of the pH value and the initial concentration of MB. H-bonding assisted by hydrogen/hydroxide ion was the most influential force. According to the effect of pH and temperature, organisms exposed to cellular environment with high alkalinity and high temperature might uptake more APs molecules with chemical properties similar to MB and suffered greater health risks. In detail, APs might replace amino acid molecules surrounding porphyrin and change the distortion type of porphyrin molecule, and then affect biological functions of porphyrin and related proteins. This study facilitates a better understanding of potential toxicity of organisms in contaminated environment.

Removal of tetracycline by denitrifying Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium Pseudomonas sp. H117 and biomaterials (BMO and MBMO): Efficiency and mechanisms

Coexistence of multiple pollutants such as antibiotic, nitrate and heavy metal has received increasing attention resently. In this study, the functions of Pseudomonas sp.H117 on the removal of tetracycline(TC), nitrate and Mn(II), and biological materials (BMO(biogenic manganese oxides), MBMO(magnetic BMO)) on the removal of TC were investigated. Strain H117 showed higher TC removal efficiency of 68.86% (0.071 mg·L^-1·h^-1) within 96 h. Meanwhile, NO₃-N and Mn(II) achieved high removal efficiency of 100% (0.211 mg·L^-1·h^-1) and 64.64% (0.265 mg·L^-1·h^-1), respectively. Furthermore, trapping experiments testified that Mn(III) intermediate formed during the biological manganese oxidation process, which contribute to the TC degradation. 91.29% and 96.63% of TC removal efficiency within 12 h were achieved by BMO and MBMO. Moreover, XPS, FTIR spectra, kinetics analysis and adsorption isotherms elucidated Mn(III) oxidation, chemical adsorption and ligand exchange reactions contribute to the removal of TC by biomaterials.

Sorption of oxytetracycline in particulate organic matter in soils and sediments: Roles of pH, ionic strength and temperature

Particulate organic matter (POM) is a fraction of organic matter with dissimilar properties in different soils. POM isolated from soils and sediments (wetland, oil waste field, farmlands and aquaculture pond sediment) was used to study its sorption behavior on the antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC). Impacts of solution pH, ionic strength and temperature on the OTC sorption were studied. The sorption rates of OTC in POM from wetland (POM-w) and farmland (POM-f1, POM-f2) were rapid during the first 3 h and gradually decreased with reaction time until reaching the equilibrium. Linear sorption occurred from 3 to 12 h in POM from oil waste field land (POM-o) and aquaculture pond sediment (POM-a). The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient (k_oc) varied from 215.0 to 4493.6 L kg^-1, and it was nearly 10× higher for the POM-w, POM-f1 and POM-f2 than in the POM-o and POM-a. Sorption of OTC by POM exhibited strong pH dependence. Ionic factors affected OTC sorption in POM-f1, POM-f2 and POM-a. The sorption capacity declined >50% in a solution with Ca²⁺ compared to other ions with similar ionic strength. Sorption thermodynamics showed an entropy increasing and endothermic progress during the OTC sorption in POM, implying a spontaneous sorption process. Several mechanisms were involved in OTC sorption in POM, including hydrogen bonding, cation exchange, hydrophobic partitioning and surface complexation.

Concerted Efforts Are Needed to Control and Mitigate Antibiotic Pollution in Coastal Waters of China

Antibiotics have been applied for decades and antibiotic pollution is of great concern due to the risk for promoting resistant genes. Human activities such as mariculture and land-based discharge can lead to the antibiotic pollution in coastal area and it is of importance to assess the pollution and risks of antibiotics in this area. In this mini-review, the pollution status of antibiotics in Chinese coastal waters is summarized and some perspectives are put forward for future efforts to mitigate the pollution.

Differential adsorption of zwitterionic PPCPs by multifunctional resins: The influence of the hydrophobicity and electrostatic potential of PPCPs

Zwitterionic pharmaceuticals and personal care products can interact with adsorbents in different ways due to their various properties. In this work, the effects of hydrophobicity and electrostatic potential were explored through the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CPX) and tetracycline (TC) onto multifunctional resins. Nonionic surface interaction was dominant for the adsorption on high-surface-area resin GMA10. Thereinto, hydrophobic and π-π interaction dominant for hydrophobic CPX and hydrophilic TC, respectively. Electrostatic interaction played an important role for high-anion-exchange-capacity resin GMA90. Upon their adsorption onto GMA50 resin, the relatively separated positive and negative electrostatic potentials of CPX^+- due to the greater distance (∼12.33 Å) between the anionic and cationic groups led to electrostatic attraction and interaction (Ea = 8.64 ± 0.31 kJ/mol) and the vertical orientation of molecule on the surface. However, TC^+-0 displayed nonionic surface interaction (Ea = 7.96 ± 0.14 kJ/mol) due to its relatively neutral electrostatic potential arising from the adjacent functional groups. Hence, the surface of GMA50 was covered with TC^+-0 molecules adsorbed parallel to the surface, thereby restricting TC^+-0 adsorption. Coexisted with monovalent salts, CPX adsorption was facilitated due to the salting-out effect. By contrast, the salting-out effect for TC was extremely weak, and TC adsorption was restrained due to the competitive adsorption of salts.

Adsorption of tetracycline in aqueous solution by biochar derived from waste Auricularia auricula dregs

This study investigated the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) on biochar (BC) derived from waste Auricularia auricula dregs obtained at different pyrolysis temperatures. The characterization of BC and batch experiment results showed that BC prepared at a higher temperature was more suitable for removing TC, where the maximum adsorption capacities of BC samples prepared at 300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C were 7.22 mg/g, 9.90 mg/g, and 11.90 mg/g, respectively. A pseudo-first order kinetics model and Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models fitted well to the adsorption data. Liquid film diffusion was the rate-controlling step. In addition, π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions may have played a dominant role in the adsorption mechanism between the enone structure of TC and aromatic C of BC. These results may facilitate further investigations of the adsorption mechanism and optimization of the process.
