Phototransformation of 2,3-Dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE) in Natural Waters: Important Roles of Dissolved Organic Matter and Chloride Ion

Dual role of dissolved black carbon in sensitized ofloxacin photooxidation: Mechanism and influential factors

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is the more photoactive component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, which plays a dual role in the photoconversion of aquatic contaminants, acting as both a photosensitizer and an inhibitor. However, little is known about the more systematic mechanism by which DBC exhibits a dual effect, which is closely related to the structure composition of DBC. In this study, the differences in characteristics of DBC obtained from 300 °C and 500 °C were compared via UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectra (3D-EEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and evaluated the promoting and inhibiting effects of DBC on ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation. It was found that higher pyrolysis temperature reduced the UV absorbance, molecular weight, aromaticity, and phenolics of DBC while increasing the content of quinone/aromatic ketone and humic substances. Photochemical data showed that 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH were all participated in the DBC-mediated OFL photodegradation. Wherein, DBC300 (DBCT, where T = pyrolysis temperature) had strong light screening and dynamic quenching effect, but the formation ability of 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH was poor, which significantly retarded the photodegradation of OFL. While DBC500 exhibited a slight promotion effect due to its higher formation ability of reactive species and weak light screening effect. Moreover, DBC500 had higher steady-state concentration and (kOFL,3DBC⁎) than DBC300, which might be due to the higher contents of quinone/aromatic ketone and the lower contents of phenol in DBC500, thus enhancing the reactivity of 3DBC* and OFL. Our research systematically revealed the trade-off mechanism of DBC on the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones, and provided an important theoretical guidance for the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones under the evolution of DBC composition.

Effects of dissolved organic matter and halogen ions on phototransformation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Photochemical reactions contribute to the attenuation and transformation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface natural waters. Nevertheless, effects of DOM and halogen ions on phototransformation of PPCPs remain elusive. This work selected disparate PPCPs as target pollutants to investigate their aquatic phototransformation processes. Results show that PPCPs containing multiple electron-donating groups (-OH, -NH2, -OR, etc.) are more reactive with photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) such as triplet DOM (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and reactive halogen species (RHSs), relative to PPCPs containing electron-withdrawing groups (-NOR, -COOR, -OCR, etc.). The generation of RHSs as a result of the coexistance of DOM and halide ions changed the contribution of PPRIs to the photochemical conversion of PPCPs during their migration from fresh water to seawater. For PPCPs (AMP, SMZ, PN, NOR, CIP, etc) with highly reactive groups toward RHSs, the generation of RHSs facilitated their photolysis in halide ion-rich waters, where Cl- plays a critical role in the photochemical transformation of PPCPs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that single electron transfer and H-abstraction are main reaction pathways of RHSs with the PPCPs. These results demonstate the irreplaceable roles of PPRIs and revealing the underlying reaction mechanisms during the phototransformation of PPCPs, which contributes to a better understanding of the environmental behaviors of PPCPs in complex aquatic environments.

Wavelength-dependent direct and indirect photochemical transformations of organic pollutants

Sunlight-induced photochemical transformations greatly affect the persistence of organic pollutants in natural environment. Whereas sunlight intensity is well-known to affect pollutant phototransformation rates, the reliance of pollutant phototransformation kinetics on sunlight spectrum remains poorly understood, which may greatly vary under different spatial-temporal, water matrix, and climatic conditions. Here, we systematically assessed the wavelength-dependent direct and indirect phototransformations of 12 organic pollutants. Their phototransformation rates dramatically decreased with light wavelength increasing from 375 to 632 nm, with direct photolysis displaying higher wavelength-dependence than indirect photolysis. Remarkably, UV light dominated both direct (90.4-99.5 %) and indirect (64.6-98.7 %) photochemical transformations of all investigated organic pollutants, despite its minor portion in sunlight spectrum (e.g., 6.5 % on March 20 at the equator). Based on wavelength-dependent rate constant spectrum, the predicted phototransformation rate of chloramphenicol (4.5 ± 0.7 × 10-4 s-1) agreed well with the observed rate under outdoor sunlight irradiation (4.3 ± 0.0 × 10-4 s-1), and there is no significant difference between the predicted rate and the observed rate (p-value = 0.132). Moreover, rate constant and quantum yield coefficient (QYC) spectrum could be applied for facilely investigate the influence of spectral changes on the phototransformation of pollutants under varying spatial-temporal (e.g., season, latitude) and climatic conditions (e.g., cloud cover). Our study highlights the wavelength-dependence of both direct and indirect phototransformation of pollutants, and the UV part of natural sunlight plays a decisive role in the phototransformation of pollutants.

Photolysis of dinotefuran in aqueous solution: Kinetics, influencing factors and photodegradation mechanism

The environmental behaviour of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) is of momentous concern due to their frequent detection in aquatic environment and their biotoxicity for non-target organisms. Phototransformation is one of the most significant transformation processes, which is directly related to NNIs exposure and environmental risks. In this study, the photodegradation of dinotefuran (DIN, 1-Methyl-2-nitro-3-(tetrahydro-3-furanylmethyl)-guanidine), one of the most promising NNIs, was conducted under irritated light in the presence of Cl-, DOM along with the effect of pH and initial concentration. The findings demonstrated that in ultra-pure (UP) water, the photolysis rate constants (k) of DIN rose with increasing initial concentration. Whereas, in tap water, at varied pH levels, and in the presence of Cl-, the outcomes were reversed. At the same time, lower concentration of DOM promoted DIN photolysis processes due to the production of reactive oxygen species, while higher concentrations of DOM inhibited the photolysis by the predominance of light shielding effects. The singlet oxygen (1O2) was produced in the photolysis processes of DIN with Cl- and DOM, which was confirmed by electron spin resonance (EPR) analysis. Four main photolysis products and three intermediates were identified by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS analysis. The possible photodegradation pathways of DIN were proposed including the oxidation by 1O2, reduction and hydrolysis after the removal of nitro group from parent compounds. This study expanding our understanding of transformation behavior and fate of NNIs in the aquatic environment, which is essential for estimating their environmental risks.

Photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity of three novel designed neonicotinoids: Impact of novel modifying groups

Three novel neonicotinoids (cycloxaprid, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor) were designed to reduce the biotoxicity for non-target organisms. These neonicotinoids were photolyzed under light radiation, but it was unclear for the photo-enhanced toxicity and influences of the novel modifying group of the three neonicotinoids. The photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity experiments were performed for the three neonicotinoids, coupled with quantum chemistry calculation, the mechanisms of photolysis, photo-enhanced toxicity and the influences of novel modifying groups were analyzed. The results showed the photolysis pathways were enriched as compared with previous neonicotinoids due to the composition of modifying groups, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl participated the photolysis of cycloxaprid and flupyradifurone. All tested neonicotinoids exhibited photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio fischeri. Due to the difference of photolysis mechanism and toxicity to V. fischeri, the photo-enhanced toxicity curves showed diverse variation when histidine, tert-butanol or dissolved organic matters was in presence of the test solutions. The impact of novel modifying groups over photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity were analyzed based on the comparison with previous neonicotinoids, theoretically predicted UV-Vis spectra and photo-physical/chemical property descriptors. The data showed the composition of novel modifying group increased the light absorption and photo-chemical activities for the three neonicotinoids.

Apparent quantum yield for photo-production of singlet oxygen in reservoirs and its relation to the water matrix

Man-made reservoirs are important for human daily lives and offer different functions, however they are contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from each reservoir is unique in composition, which further determines its photo-reactivity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the photo-reactivity of reservoir DOM in terms of the quantum yield for photo-production of singlet oxygen (Ф1O2). We sampled surface water of 50 reservoirs in Japan and determined their Ф1O2 using simulated sunlight together with bulk water analysis. Their Ф1O2 ranged from 1.46 × 10-2 to 6.21 × 10-2 (mean, 2.55 × 10-2), which was identical to those of lakes and rivers reported in the literature, but lower than those of wetland water and wastewater. High-energy triplet-state of DOM accounted for 59.4% of the 1O2 production in the reservoir water on average. Among the bulk water properties, the spectral slope of wavelength from 350 to 400 nm (S350-400) was statistically detected as the most important predictor for Ф1O2. Furthermore, the multiple linear regression model employed S350-400 and the biological index as predictors with no intercorrelations and reasonable accuracy (r2 = 0.86), while the random forest model showed a better accuracy (r2 = 0.90). Overall, these major findings are beneficial for understanding the photo-reactivity of reservoir waters.

Anaerobic biotransformation of two novel brominated flame retardants: Kinetics, isotope fractionation and reaction mechanisms

1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane (TBCO) and 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE), as safer alternatives to traditional brominated flame retardants, have been extensively detected in various environmental media and pose emerging risks. However, much less is known about their fate in the environment. Anaerobic microbial transformation is a key pathway for the natural attenuation of contaminants. This study investigated, for the first time, the microbial transformation behaviors of β-TBCO and DPTE by Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain CG1. The results indicated that both β-TBCO and DPTE could be easily transformed by D. mccartyi CG1 with kobs values of 0.0218 ± 0.0015 h-1 and 0.0089 ± 0.0003 h-1, respectively. In particular, β-TBCO seemed to undergo dibromo-elimination and then epoxidation to form 4,5-dibromo-9-oxabicyclo[6.1.0]nonane, while DPTE experienced debromination at the benzene ring (ortho-bromine being removed prior to para-bromine) rather than at the carbon chain. Additionally, pronounced carbon and bromine isotope fractionations were observed during biotransformation of β-TBCO and DPTE, suggesting that C-Br bond breaking is the rate-limiting step of their biotransformation. Finally, coupled with identified products and isotope fractionation patterns, β-elimination (E2) and Sn2-nucleophilic substitution were considered the most likely microbial transformation mechanisms for β-TBCO and DPTE, respectively. This work provides important information for assessing the potential of natural attenuation and environmental risks of β-TBCO and DPTE.

Photochemical behaviors of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environment: Generation, characterization, influencing factors and practical application

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) widely exists in aquatic environment and plays a critical role in environmental photochemical reaction. The photochemical behaviors of DOM in sunlit surface waters have received widely attention because its photochemical effects for some coexisted substances in aquatic environment, especially for organic micropollutants degradation. Therefore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the photochemical properties and environmental effects of DOM, we reviewed the influence of sources on the structure and composition of DOM with relevant identified techniques to analysis functional groups. Additionally, identification and quantification for reactive intermediates are discussed with a focus on influencing factors to produce reactive intermediates by DOM under solar irradiation. These reactive intermediates can promote the photodegradation of organic micropollutants in the environmental system. In future, attention should be paid to the photochemical properties of DOM and environmental effects in real environmental system and development of advanced techniques to study DOM.

Investigation of the Effects of Dioctyl Sulfosuccinate on the Photodegradation of Benzo[a]Pyrene in Aqueous Solutions under Various Wavelength Regimes

Due to the relatively high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in oil samples, oil spills in aquatic ecosystems release significant amounts of PAHs. Although remediation efforts often take place during or immediately after an oil spill incident, a portion of the released PAHs remains in the body of water. A natural phenomenon resulting from the direct exposure of PAHs to sunlight is photodegradation. This article investigates the effect of dioctyl sulfosuccinate (DOSS) on the photodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), the most toxic PAH in the priority pollutants list of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). DOSS is a surfactant typically used in the remediation of oil spills. Three lamps with maximum emission wavelengths at 350 nm, 419 nm, and 575 nm were individually and simultaneously used to irradiate aqueous solutions of BaP in the absence and the presence of DOSS. When irradiated with the 419 nm lamp or the 575 lamp, BaP showed no photodegradation. Upon irradiation with the 350 nm lamp and with the simultaneous use of the three lamps, the photodegradation of BaP followed first-order kinetics. Independent of the irradiation wavelength, the presence of DOSS increased the half-life of BaP in the aqueous solution. In the case of the 350 nm lamp, the rate constant of photodegradation in the absence and the presence of DOSS varied from (3.79 ± 0.97) × 10-3 min-1 to (1.10 ± 0.13) × 10-3 min-1, respectively. Under simultaneous irradiation with the lamps, the rate constant of photodegradation varied from (1.12 ± 0.35) × 10-3 min (no DOSS) to (3.30 ± 0.87) × 10-4 (with DOSS). Since the largest rate constants of photodegradation were observed in the absence of DOSS, the longer half-lives of BaP in the presence of surfactant were attributed to the incorporation of PAH molecules into the DOSS micelles.

Effect of adsorption on ferrihydrite on the photoreactivity of dissolved black carbon for photodegradation of sulfadiazine

The selective adsorption of dissolved black carbon (DBC) on inorganic minerals is a widespread geochemical process in the natural environment, which could change the chemical and optical properties of DBC. However, it remains unclear how selective adsorption affects the photoreactivity of DBC for photodegradation of organic pollutants. This paper was the first to investigate the effect of DBC adsorption on ferrihydrite at different Fe/C molar ratios (Fe/C molar ratios of 0, 7.50 and 11.25, and marked as DBC₀, DBC_7.50 and DBC_11.25) on the photoproduction of reactive intermediates generated from DBC and their interaction with sulfadiazine (SD). Results showed that UV absorbance, aromaticity, molecular weight and contents of phenolic antioxidants of DBC were significantly decreased after adsorption on ferrihydrite, and higher decrease was observed at higher Fe/C ratio. Photodegradation kinetics experiments showed that observed photodegradation rate constant of SD (k_obs) increased from 3.99 × 10^-5 s^-1 in DBC₀ to 5.69 × 10^-5 s^-1 in DBC_7.50 while decreased to 3.44 × 10^-5 s^-1 in DBC_11.25, in which ³DBC* played important roles and ¹O₂ played a minor role, while ·OH was not involved in the reaction. Meanwhile, the second-order reaction rate constant between ³DBC* and SD (k_{SD, 3DBC*}) increased from 0.84 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1 for DBC₀ to 2.53 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1 for DBC_7.50 while decreased to 0.90 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1 for DBC_11.25. The above results might be mainly attributed to the fact that the decrease of phenolic antioxidants in DBC weakened the back-reduction of ³DBC* and reactive intermediates of SD as the Fe/C ratio increased, while the decrease of quinones and ketones reduced the photoproduction of ³DBC*. The research revealed adsorption on ferrihydrite affected the photodegradation of SD by changing the reactivity of ³DBC*, which was helpful to understand the dynamic roles of DBC in the photodegradation of organic pollutants.

Sublethal toxicity of sulfoxaflor to parasitoid Binodoxys communis Gahan

Integrated pest management is focused on combining biological and chemical controls. There is evidence of a negative impact of neonicotinoids on biological control, however, sulfoxaflor (SFX), a novel insecticide, its impact on parasitoid natural predator remain limited. Binodoxys communis is an important parasitic natural enemy of Aphis gossypii, which may have direct and indirect toxicity from the insecticides and aphids. Understanding the potential threat of SFX to B. communis is therefore essential to integrated pest management and the conservation of parasitoids. Here, the effects of sublethal doses of SFX on B. communis larvae and adults are presented for the first time. Sublethal SFX doses had a significant negative effect on the survival rate, adult life span, duration of development, and rate of parasitism. Moreover, exposure to sublethal SFX doses also had adverse effects on the biological performance of the next generation of B. communis. Based on the transcriptome analysis, the expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, peroxidase, lysosomes, glutathione metabolism, drug metabolism, and CYP450 were significantly shifted by sublethal SFX exposure. These results indicate that sublethal SFX doses might adversely affect the biological performance of B. communis by altering gene expression related to the function of detoxification systems and energy metabolism. In conclusion, considering the beneficial ecological services of provided by parasitoids and the negative effects of sulfoxaflor across a greater usage scale, we emphasize the importance to optimize pesticide applications in IPM packages, in order to ensure the safety and survival of natural pest parasitoids.

Dark repair of sunlight-inactivated tetracycline-resistant bacteria: Mechanisms and important role of bacteria in viable but non-culturable state

The spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in the environment poses a potential threat to human health, and the reactivation of inactivated ARB accelerated the spread of ARB. However, little is known about the reactivation of sunlight-inactivated ARB in natural waters. In this study, the reactivation of sunlight-inactivated ARB in dark conditions was investigated with tetracycline-resistant E. coli (Tc-AR E. coli) as a representative. Results showed that sunlight-inactivated Tc-AR E. coli underwent dark repair to regain tetracycline resistance with dark repair ratios increasing from (0.124 ± 0.012)‱ within 24 h dark treatment to (0.891 ± 0.033)‱ within 48 h. The presence of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) promoted the reactivation of sunlight-inactivated Tc-AR E. coli and tetracycline inhibited their reactivation. The reactivation of sunlight-inactivated Tc-AR E. coli is mainly attributed to the repair of the tetracycline-specific efflux pump in the cell membrane. Tc-AR E. coli in a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state was observed and dominated the reactivation as the inactivated ARB remain present in the dark for more than 20 h. These results explained the reason for distribution difference of Tc-ARB at different depths in natural waters, which are of great significance for understanding the environmental behavior of ARB.

Impacts of properties of dissolved organic matters on indirect photodegradation of genistein

Excited triplet states of dissolved organic matters (³DOM*) are one of the most important photochemically-produced reactive intermediates leading to transformation of organic contaminants. However, relationships of photodegradation kinetics of different dissociation states of phenolic organic contaminants with chemical components or properties of ³DOM* are largely unknown. In this study, roles of ³DOM* in photodegradation of polyhydroxy phenolic genistein (Gs) at pH 5, 8 and 12 were investigated taking five kinds of DOM from different sources as examples. Relationships between photodegradation kinetics constants and DOM properties were built. Results showed that the contributions of direct ³DOM*-induced reactions to the total indirect photodegradation of Gs and second-order reaction rate constants (k_DOM,Gs) of Gs with ³DOM* increased with pH increases. This was mainly attributed to decreases in vertical ionization energy of Gs at higher pH, endowing Gs with stronger electron donating capacities. k_DOM,Gs was found to positively correlate with the specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm, reflecting aromaticity of DOM, and negatively correlate with the absorbance ratio at 254 and 365 nm and contents of dissociated acidic functional groups of DOM, representing molecular weights of DOM, antioxidants and the repulsive forces between ³DOM* and Gs. This study provided a new insight into relationship between DOM properties and indirect photodegradation kinetics of phenolic contaminants in aquatic environments.

Photodegradation of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment: Importance, factors and processes

Photochemical reactions widely occur in the aquatic environment and play fundamental roles in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, solar-induced photodegradation is efficient for many organic micropollutants (OMPs), especially those that cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation, and thus can mitigate chemical pollution. Recent reports indicate that photodegradation may play a more important role than biodegradation in many OMP transformations in the aquatic environment. Photodegradation can be influenced by the water matrix such as pH, inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The effect of the water matrix such as DOM on photodegradation is complex, and new insights concerning the disparate effects of DOM have recently been reported. In addition, the photodegradation process is also influenced by physical factors such as latitude, water depth, and temporal variations in sunlight as these factors determine the light conditions. However, it remains challenging to gain an overview of the importance of photodegradation in the aquatic environment because the reactions involved are diverse and complex. Therefore, this review provides a concise summary of the importance of photodegradation and the major processes related to the photodegradation of OMPs, with particular attention given to recent progress on the major reactions of DOM. In addition, major knowledge gaps in this field of environmental photochemistry are highlighted.

Development of a quantitative structure-activity relationship model for predicting quantum yield of hydroxyl radical generation from organic compounds

Organic compounds are capable of generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) through their excited triplet states in natural water. It is of significance to reveal the underlying mechanism of the generation and obtain the generation quantum yield of ˙OH from organic compounds for better understanding of its involvement in indirect photochemical processes in the environment. In this study, the ˙OH quantum yields (Φ_˙OH) of 20 organic compounds were determined by photochemical experiments. The calculated Φ_˙OH values for the selected organic compounds vary from (1.2 ± 0.39) × 10^-5 to (7.2 ± 0.16) × 10^-4. A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model for log Φ_˙OH was developed and the established model was proven to have a proper goodness of fit, robustness, and predictive ability. The QSAR model was successfully used to predict the Φ_˙OH value of organic pollutants. Mechanistic interpretation showed that the electron distribution and the electronegativity of organic compounds are the most important factors that determine the generation of ˙OH. The results are helpful for understanding the generation mechanism of ˙OH from organic compounds and also provide insights into the generation of ˙OH from dissolved organic matter in natural water.

Catalytic degradation of brominated flame retardants in the environment: New techniques and research highlights

Due to the extensive commercial use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), human beings are chronically exposed to BFRs, causing great harms to human health, which imposes urgent demands to degrade them in the environment. Among various degradation techniques, catalytic degradation has been proven to be outstanding because of its rapidness and effectiveness. Therefore, much attention has been given to catalytic degradation, especially the extensively studied photocatalytic degradation and nanocatalytic reduction techniques. Recently, some novel advanced catalytic techniques have been developed and show excellent catalytic degradation efficiency for BFRs, including natural substances catalytic degradation, new Fenton catalytic degradation, new chemical reagent catalytic degradation, new material catalytic degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, plasma catalytic degradation, and composite catalytic degradation systems. In addition to the common features of traditional catalytic techniques, these novel techniques possess their own specific advantages in various aspects. Therefore, this review summarized the degradation mechanism of BFRs by the above new catalytic degradation methods under the laboratory conditions, simulated real environment, and real environment conditions, and further evaluated their advantages and disadvantages, aiming to provide some research ideas for the catalytic degradation of BFRs in the environment in the future. We suggested that more attention should focus on features of novel catalytic techniques, including eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and pragmatic usefulness.

Optimization and mechanism of Tetrabromobisphenol A removal by dithionite under anaerobic conditions: Response surface methodology and degradation pathway

In this study, dithionite (DTN) was used to degrade Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely applied brominated flame retardants, under anaerobic conditions with the reaction terminator of nitrate. The optimization of reaction parameters including TBBPA concentration, DTN concentration and pH value were conducted by response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD). The degradation process could be simulated accurately by a quadratic model with the correlation coefficient R² of 0.9550. The interaction between pH and DTN concentration was significant with the p-value of 0.0017. Moreover, the maximum TBBPA removal was 87.6 ± 3.2% and obtained at TBBPA concentration of 2.00 μM, the DTN concentration of 322.31 μM, and the pH of 6.14 under anaerobic conditions. It was found that the factors influenced TBBPA removal followed the order: pH > DTN concentration > TBBPA concentration. The major active products from DTN are SO₃^2- and S₂O₃^2-. In addition, different inhibitions of natural water matrix including chloride, bicarbonate, sulfide and humic acid on TBBPA degradation had been confirmed. According to the identified six intermediates via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), two steps of the degradation pathways were speculated, including the breakage of C-Br bond and C-C bond. This study provides a convenient way to degrade TBBPA.

Combined effects of photoaging and natural organic matter on the colloidal stability of nanoplastics in aquatic environments

The transport and fate of nanoplastics (NPs) in aquatic environments are closely associated with their colloidal stability, which is affected by aging and natural organic matter (NOM) adsorption. This study systematically investigated the combined effects of photoaging and NOM (e.g. humic acids, HA; and a model protein, bovine serum albumin, BSA) on the aggregation kinetics of NPs (polystyrene, PS) in NaCl and CaCl₂ solutions. Our results showed that photoaged NPs adsorbed less HA than pristine NPs due to weaker hydrophobic and π-π interactions. In return, HA showed weaker impacts on NPs' stability after photoaging. Differently, photoaged NPs absorbed more BSA than pristine NPs due to stronger hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. Thus, the inhibitory effects of BSA on the aggregation kinetics of NPs were enhanced after photoaging. Regarding the effects of NOM on the aging of NPs, our results showed that HA competed with NPs for photons and underwent photo-degradation. Subsequently, the destruction/reconstruction of adsorbed HA increased (in NaCl) or decreased (in CaCl₂) the stability of NPs. Notably, light radiation-induced flocculation of BSA molecules, which wrapped and integrated NPs and lead to their destabilization. Overall, this study provided new insights into the aggregation behavior of NPs in aquatic systems, which have significant implications for predicting the transport and fate of NPs in complex real-world environments.

Photochemical degradation pathways of cell-free antibiotic resistance genes in water under simulated sunlight irradiation: Experimental and quantum chemical studies

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment poses a threat to human health and therefore their environmental behavior needs to be studied urgently. A systematic study was conducted on the photodegradation pathways of the cell-free tetracycline resistance gene (Tc-ARG) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results showed that Tc-ARG can undergo direct photodegradation, which significantly reduces its horizontal transfer efficiency. Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) promoted the photodegradation of Tc-ARG and further inhibited its horizontal transfer by generating reactive intermediates. The photodegradation of Tc-ARG was attributed to degradation of the four bases (G, C, A, T) and the deoxyribose group. Quantum chemical calculations showed that the four bases could be oxidized by the hydroxyl radical (HO) through addition and H-abstraction reactions. The main oxidative product 8-oxo-dG was detected. This product was generated through the addition reaction of G-C with HO, subsequent to dissolved oxygen initiated H-abstraction and H₂O catalyzed H-transfer reactions. The predicted maximum photodegradation rates of Tc-ARG in the Yellow River estuary were 0.524, 0.937, and 0.336 h^-1 in fresh water, estuary water, and seawater, respectively. This study furthermore revealed the microscopic photodegradation pathways and obtained essential degradation parameters of Tc-ARG in sunlit surface water.

Insights into generation mechanisms of halogen radicals from excited triplet state of dissolved organic matter

Triplet states of dissolved organic matter (³DOM*) can sensitize the generation of halogen radicals in marine water. The generation pathways of halogen radicals from ³DOM* is still not fully understood. In this study, the generation of halogen radicals from DOM was investigated with Suwanee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as a representative and detailed generation pathways were further revealed with anthraquinone-2-sodium sulfonate (AQ2S) as a triplet sensitizer. The results showed that in SRFA solutions with halogen ions, various halogen radicals can be generated. Among which, Br is formed by the reaction of Br^- with ³AQ2S*, and Cl is produced by the reaction of Cl^- with AQ2S⁺ that generated in the presence of dissolved oxygen (DO). Cl₂^- and Br₂^- were generated via the subsequent combination of Cl/Br with another Cl^-/Br^-. In solutions without DO, BrCl^- is mainly generated through the combination of Br with Cl^-, and BrCl^- could also be generated through the combination of Cl with Br^- in solutions with DO. This study provides deep insights into the generation mechanisms of different halogen radicals from ³DOM* and is helpful for understanding the photochemical processes of halogen radicals in marine waters.

Source, fate, transport and modelling of selected emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment: Current status and future perspectives

The occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments represent a major threat to water resources due to their potential risks to the ecosystem and humans even at trace levels. Mathematical modelling can be a useful tool as a comprehensive approach to study their fate and transport in natural waters. However, modelling studies of the occurrence, fate and transport of ECs in aquatic environments have generally received far less attention than the more widespread field and laboratory studies. In this study, we reviewed the current status of modelling ECs based on selected representative ECs, including their sources, fate and various mechanisms as well as their interactions with the surrounding environments in aquatic ecosystems, and explore future development and perspectives in this area. Most importantly, the principles, mathematical derivations, ongoing development and applications of various ECs models in different geographical regions are critically reviewed and discussed. The recommendations for improving data quality, monitoring planning, model development and applications were also suggested. The outcomes of this review can lay down a future framework in developing a comprehensive ECs modelling approach to help researchers and policymakers effectively manage water resources impacted by rising levels of ECs.

Mechanistic Insight into Degradation of Cetirizine under UV/Chlorine Treatment: Experimental and Quantum Chemical Studies

UV/chlorine treatment is an efficient technology for removing organic pollutants in wastewater. Nevertheless, degradation of antihistamines in the UV/chlorine system, especially the underlying reaction mechanism, is not yet clear. In this study, the degradation of cetirizine (CTZ), a representative antihistamine, under UV/chlorine treatment was investigated. The results showed that CTZ could undergo fast degradation in the UV/chlorine system with an observed reaction rate constant (kobs) of (0.19 ± 0.01) min−1, which showed a first-increase and then-decrease trend with its initial concentration increased. The degradation of CTZ during the UV/chlorine treatment was attributed to direct UV irradiation (38.7%), HO• (35.3%), Cl• (7.3%), and ClO• (17.1%). The kobs of CTZ decreased with the increase in pH and the increase in concentrations of a representative dissolved organic matter, Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), due to their negative effects on the concentrations of reactive species generated in the UV/chlorine system. The detailed reaction pathways of HO•, ClO•, and Cl• with CTZ were revealed using quantum chemical calculation. This study provided significant insights into the efficient degradation and the underlying mechanism for the removal of CTZ in the UV/chlorine system.

Effect of permanganate oxidation on the photoreactivity of dissolved organic matter for photodegradation of typical pharmaceuticals

Permanganate has been widely used in the remediation of contaminated water due to its relatively strong oxidation properties and ease of use. The ubiquitous dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters causes a significant sink of permanganate in treatments, which further impacts the photoformation of reactive species and the removal of trace pollutants by DOM. Significantly, the effect of permanganate oxidation on the photoreactivity of DOM remains unknown. The present paper investigated for the first time the photophysical and photochemical properties variation of DOM from different sources after permanganate oxidation. Results showed that the permanganate oxidation caused a decrease in UV absorbance, fluorescence intensity, aromaticity, and molecular weight for all tested DOM samples, as well as photoformation rate of DOM triplet states (³DOM^⁎), singlet oxygen (¹O₂), and hydroxyl radical (OH) under simulated sunlight. Quantum yield of ¹O₂ showed positively linear correlations with both triplet quantum yield coefficient (f_TMP) and E2/E3 (ratio of absorbance at 254 and 365 nm) for all the DOM samples before and after permanganate oxidation. The quantum yield of OH exhibited no significant correlation with f_TMP or E2/E3. Permanganate oxidation inhibited the DOM-photosensitized indirect photodegradation of pollutants that do not absorb sunlight (e.g., decreased by 15-29%). For the tested pollutants that undergo direct photolysis under sunlight, their photodegradation was promoted (e.g., increased by 1-19%) in the permanganate oxidized DOM solutions due to the decrease of light-screening effect by DOM. These findings suggest that permanganate oxidation affects the photoreactivity of DOM and the corresponding photochemical fate of organic pollutants in natural waters.

Dissolved Organic Matter Enhanced the Aggregation and Oxidation of Nanoplastics under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation in Water

Nanoplastics (NPs) have become a new type of pollutant of high concern that is ubiquitous in aqueous environments. However, the transport and transformation of NPs in natural waters are not yet fully understood. In this study, the aggregation and photooxidation of NPs were assessed with nanosized polystyrene (PS) as an example, and the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated with Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as representative DOM. The results showed that simulated sunlight irradiation exhibited negligible effects on the aggregation of PS, while SRFA enhanced its heteroaggregation through hydrophobic interactions. In SRFA solutions, photooxidation of PS with a particle size of 200 nm was observed, which led to an increase in the O/C ratio on its surface at a rate of (2.20 ± 0.40) × 10^-2 h^-1. This indicates the promotional effect of SRFA on the oxidation of nanosized PS, which is attributed to the generation of the excited triplet state (³SRFA*), hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂). Among these reactive species, ¹O₂ played a crucial role in the oxidation of PS. The findings in this study are helpful for an in-depth understanding of the environmental behavior of NPs in natural waters.

Phototransformation of tetrabromobisphenol A in saline water under simulated sunlight irradiation

The widespread use of halogenated flame retardants in recent years has led to the accumulation of TBBPA in water, which may cause potential harm to living organisms. The phototransformation of the flame retardant TBBPA in alkaline saline water under simulated sunlight irradiation was investigated. The effects of abiotic factors such as the initial concentration of TBBPA, chloride ion concentration, solution pH, inorganic anions and cations, dissolved organic matter (DOM) were studied. The results showed that the phototransformation rate of TBBPA accelerated with the decrease of the initial concentration of TBBPA, the increase of chloride ion concentration and solution pH. The scavenging experiments showed that •OH, ¹O₂, O₂•^- and ³TBBPA* all participated in the phototransformation of TBBPA. The presence of NO₃^-, CO₃^2-, SO₄^2-, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe³⁺ and fulvic acid (FA) all inhibited the phototransformation of TBBPA in the present study. The phototransformation products of TBBPA were detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the phototransformation pathways were proposed. This is the first report on the photo-induced generation of halogen exchange products from TBBPA in saline solutions, which will contribute to a better understanding of the environmental behavior and risks of BFRs in water.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Degradation of Reactive Radical-Mediated Probe Compounds by the UV/Chlorine Process: Theoretical Calculation and Experimental Verification

The UV/chlorine process, by combining chlorination with UV irradiation, has been recently considered as a highly efficient advanced oxidation process (AOP) technology in water treatment. Nitrobenzene (NB), benzoic acid (BA), and p-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA) are widely used as model probe compounds in the UV/chlorine system to calculate the second-order rate constants of the specific radical reaction with target contaminates by a competitive kinetics method. A comprehensive understanding of probe compounds' reaction mechanism with reactive radicals is critical for investigation of the UV/chlorine reaction system. Here, we evaluated the radical-mediated reaction kinetics and mechanism of NB, BA, and pCBA in the UV/chlorine process using theoretical calculations and experimental studies. The main reactive radicals ^•OH, ^•ClO, and ^•Cl in the UV/chlorine process for the initial reaction with NB, BA, and pCBA can be explained by H-abstraction and addition pathways. The ΔE ^0,≠ values for the ^•OH reaction with NB, BA, and pCBA were in the range of 5.0-8.0, 3.7-8.2, and 3.4-8.2 kcal mol^-1, respectively. The ΔE ^0,≠ values for ^•ClO and ^•Cl reactions with these three probe compounds were higher than those of ^•OH, indicating slower ^•ClO- and ^•Cl-initiated reactions than that of the ^•OH-initiated reaction. The theoretically calculated radical-mediated reaction kinetic rate constants (k _CP ^C) for NB, BA, and pCBA were 4.58 × 10^-3, 1.28 × 10^-2, and 1.6 × 10^-2 s^-1, respectively, which was consistent with the experimentally determined pseudo-first-order rate constant (k _CP ^RR) in the UV/chlorine process. Interestingly, theoretical calculations showed that ^•ClO and ^•Cl played an important role in subsequent reactions of NB-OH radicals, converting to hydroxylated and chlorinated products, which were further confirmed by experimental products' identification. The findings from this study indicated that quantum chemistry calculations provide an effective means to investigate the reaction kinetics and mechanism of chemicals in the UV/chlorine process.

Comparative analysis on the photolysis kinetics of four neonicotinoid pesticides and their photo-induced toxicity to Vibrio Fischeri: Pathway and toxic mechanism

Neonicotinoids are widely used pesticides all over the world and pose severe water pollution. Although they can be degraded via absorbing sunlight, few attentions have been paid to the environmental risks of their photolysis products. In this paper, the photo-toxicity was investigated for four neonicotinoids (dinotefuran, nitenpyram, thiamethoxam and clothianidin) based on a series of experiments (i.e., photolysis kinetics, radical scavenging, bioluminescent inhibition test to Vibrio Fischeri and intermediate identification) and in-silico calculation of photolysis pathway. The results show that direct photolysis dominates the photolysis of the four neonicotinoids under simulated sunlight radiation. The bioluminescent inhibition kinetics shows that all four neonicotinoids have photo-induced toxicity to V. fischeri, but with different light-induced responses. Scavenging radicals (·OH and ¹O₂) will decrease the photo-induced toxicity of all the four neonicotinoids, indicating radicals play important roles to the photo-chemical reactions of intermediates. Dissolved organic matters exhibit slightly shading effect to the photolysis rates of four parent compounds. However, the ROSs generated by DOM can accelerate the photo-chemical reactions of intermediates, leading to different photo-induced toxicity in present of DOM. According to the detected intermediates and Gaussian calculations, there are different photolysis pathways and mechanisms for the four neonicotinoids. The calculation for photo-sensitization reactions with ³O₂ indicates that both energy transfer reactions and electron transfer reactions can be produced under simulated sunlight radiation, which further consolidate that reactive oxygen species are involved in the photolysis process. A theoretical model has been developed to explain the toxicity variations of four neonicotinoids in different aqueous conditions.

Humic Acid and Fulvic Acid Hinder Long-Term Weathering of Microplastics in Lake Water

We investigated the photoaging of polypropylene (PP) microplastics (MPs) in lake water. The results showed that photoaging of PP MPs was significantly inhibited in lake water compared with ultrapure water after 12 d of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and humic acid and fulvic acid, rather than carbonate (CO₃^2-), nitrate (NO₃^-), or chloride (Cl^-) ions, were identified as the primary contributors to the observed inhibition. Mechanisms for the roles of humic acid (Suwannee River humic acid) and fulvic acid (Pony Lake fulvic acid) in reducing the rates of photodegradation showed that humic acid and fulvic acid acted as both reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers (e.g., of ^•OH) (dominant contribution) and optical light filters. As ROS scavengers, humic acid and fulvic acid significantly decreased the capacity for the formation of ^•OH and O₂^•- by PP MPs under irradiation. In addition, the chromophores in humic acid and fulvic acid competed for photons with MPs through the light-shielding effect, thereby causing less fragmentation of PP particles and changes in other properties (melting temperature, contact angle, and surface zeta potential). The proposed mechanisms for inhibition by humic acid and fulvic acid will aid our efforts to assess the duration of aging and alterations of MP properties during long-term weathering in natural waters.

Photo-induced degradation and toxicity change of decabromobiphenyl ethers (BDE-209) in water: Effects of dissolved organic matter and halide ions

BDE-209 is a widely used brominated flame retardant that is ubiquitous in the aquatic environment, especially in marine water. However, photodegradation of BDE-209 in seawater is still not fully understood. In this work, the photodegradation kinetics of BDE-209 in water was studied and the effects of seawater dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) and halide ions (Cl^-, Br^-) were evaluated. S-DOM inhibited the degradation of BDE-209 through dynamic quenching and light shielding effect. However, with the coexistence of S-DOM, Cl^- and Br^-, the photodegradation of BDE-209 was significantly promoted. The promotional effect is attributed to the generation of excited triplet state S-DOM, singlet oxygen, and reactive halogen radicals. The results of density functional theory calculation showed that •Cl addition reaction on C-Br sites of BDE-209 is the main reaction pathway of BDE-209 with chlorine radical, which leads to the generation of mixed Cl/Br substituted intermediates. The acute toxicity and estrogenic effects of BDE-209 solution were enhanced during simulated sunlight irradiation. These results indicate that the environmental factors in seawater play important roles in the photodegradation of BDE-209, and contribute to the potential ecological risks of PBDEs in the marine environment.

Photogeneration of Reactive Species from Biochar-Derived Dissolved Black Carbon for the Degradation of Amine and Phenolic Pollutants

Due to agricultural waste combustion and large-scale biochar application, biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) is largely released into surface waters. The photogeneration of reactive species (RS) from DBC plays an important role in organic pollutant degradation. However, the mechanistic interactions between RS and pollutants are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the formation of DBC triplet states (³DBC*), singlet oxygen (¹O₂), and hydroxyl radical (^•OH) in straw biochar-derived DBC solutions and photodegradation of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Laser flash photolysis and electron spin resonance spectrometry showed that DBC exhibited higher RS quantum yields than some well-studied dissolved organic matter. The RS caused rapid degradation of atenolol, diphenhydramine, and propylparaben, selected as target PPCPs in this study. The ³DBC* contributed primarily to the oxidation of selected PPCPs via one-electron-transfer interaction, with average reaction rate constants of 1.15 × 10⁹, 1.41 × 10⁹, and 0.51 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. ^•OH also participated in the degradation and accounted for approximately 2.7, 2.5, and 18.0% of the total removal of atenolol, diphenhydramine, and propylparaben, respectively. Moreover, the photodegradation products were identified using high-resolution mass spectrometry, which further confirmed the electron transfer and ^•OH oxidation mechanisms. These findings suggest that DBC from the combustion process of agricultural biomass can efficiently induce the photodegradation of organic pollutants under sunlight in aquatic environments.

Mechanism of bicarbonate enhancing the photodegradation of β-blockers in natural waters

The impact of HCO₃^- on the photodegradation of β-blockers was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that in the presence of HCO₃^-, the photodegradation rates increase significantly for sotalol (SOT), whereas no effects on the degradation of carvedilol and arotinolol are observed. Using quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and degradation product determination, we demonstrate that carbonate radical (CO₃^•-) is formed by direct oxidation of HCO₃^- by triplet-excited SOT (³SOT*) and plays a significant role in SOT photodegradation. Competition kinetics experiments show that the three β-blockers all have high second-order rate constants (10⁷-10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) for the reaction with CO₃^•-. However, only ³SOT* has a higher reduction potential that can oxidize HCO₃^- to produce CO₃^•-. Thus, enhanced SOT removal rates in the presence of HCO₃^- were observed. In addition, the results show that seawater DOM could increase HCO₃^--induced photodegradation of SOT, whereas SRNOM mainly behaves as a CO₃^•- quencher and decreases the removal rate of SOT. The results underscore the role of HCO₃^- in limiting the persistence of organic pollutants like SOT in sunlit natural waters, and especially in marine and coastal waters.

Sensitized Photolysis of Thioglycolic Acid in Aquatic Environment

The photochemical transformations of thioglycolic acid using model systems was studied by varying the irradiation sources and the kinetic parameters were determined. It was found that thioglycolic acid undergoes destruction on induced photolysis in the presence of humic substances, and its half-life can be estimated as 10-14 days, depending on weather conditions (cloudiness, time of day, season etc.). Results obtained in the course of this study on model systems were transferred to natural waters, and it was concluded that thioglycolic acid has a positive influence on the chemical self-purification processes of water, in the natural aquatic environment. This is manifested by increasing the self-purification capacity of water, due to the generation of active oxygen species, which lead to the degradation not only of this thiol, but of other pollutants present in aquatic environment, as well. At the same time, the products of the transformations are harmless to the aquatic environment and hydrobionts.

Mechanistic insights into paracetamol transformation in UV/NH2Cl process: Experimental and theoretical study

The UV/monochloramine (NH₂Cl) process is an advanced oxidation process that can effectively remove emerging contaminants (ECs). However, the degradation mechanisms of reactive radicals with ECs are not clear. In this work, we combined theoretical calculations with experimental studies to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of radical-mediated degradation of paracetamol (AAP) in UV/NH₂Cl process. The degradation of AAP in UV/NH₂Cl process accords with the pseudo first-order kinetics. Impact factors including NH₂Cl dose, pH, natural organic matter, HCO₃^-, and NO₃^- were evaluated. The reaction mechanisms of AAP with hydroxyl radical (HO^·), reactive chlorine species (RCS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) were discussed in detail. Specifically, HO^· attacked AAP mainly through hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and radical adduct formation (RAF), while Cl₂^·- play a certain role through single electron transfer (SET). ^·NH₂ and Cl^· destructed AAP mainly through HAT. Based on the mechanism analysis, the second-order rate constants of AAP reacts with HO^·, Cl^·, ^·NH₂, ClO^·, Cl₂^·- and ^·NO₂ were calculated through transition state theory as 2.66×10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, 2.61×10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, 1.02×10⁷ M^-1 s^-1, 7.74×10⁶ M^-1 s^-1, 1.32×10⁶ M^-1 s^-1, 1.48×10³ M^-1 s^-1 respectively. The second-order rate constants were then used to distinguish the contribution of radicals to the degradation of AAP. Thirteen transformation products were identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry. Combined active sites with potential energy surface, the detailed reaction pathways were proposed. Overall, this study provides deep insights into the mechanism of radical-mediated degradation of AAP.

Enhanced and selective phototransformation of chlorophene on aluminum hydroxide-humic complexes

Mineral-humic complexes, known as mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), are ubiquitous in natural waters. However, the interaction between organic pollutants and MAOM remains elusive, which may affect their degradation process. In this study, photochemical transformation of chlorophene (CP) in the presence of MAOM, prepared by coating aluminum hydroxide with humic acid (HA-HAO), was investigated. Our results showed that the degradation of CP was significantly enhanced in the presence of HA-HAO, and the degradation rate constant was ~5 times as that with HA only. It was because the adsorption of CP to HA-HAO particles was greatly enhanced, and concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was increased on HA-HAO surfaces, which further promoted the reactions between CP and ROS. The quenching experiments combined with EPR technology confirmed that superoxide anion (O₂^·-) was the primary reactive radical on CP photodegradation. More importantly, the degradation of CP with HA-HAO followed a hydroxylation process, rather than the oligomerization reaction with HA only. Spectroscopic analysis provided direct evidence for the formation of hydrogen bonding between CP phenolic hydroxyl group and surface oxygen of HAO, which would suppress the reactivity of phenolic hydroxyl group, consequently the ortho- and meta-positions of CP became more facile for the hydroxylation reaction. This study shows the importance of MAOM in altering the photochemical behavior and transformation pathway of organic contaminants.

Effect of UV/chlorine treatment on photophysical and photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a ubiquitous component in effluents, DOM discharged with an effluent can affect the composition and properties of natural DOM in the receiving waters. As the photophysical and photochemical properties of effluent DOM can be changed by wastewater treatment processes, the effect of UV/chlorine treatment on the photophysical and photochemical properties of DOM was investigated using Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) as representatives. Results showed that the absorbance of the two DOM was significantly decreased. The evolution trends of three representative photophysical parameters upon increase of chlorine dosages were observed. Also, a decrease in DOM aromaticity, molecular weight and electron-donating capacity was observed upon increasing chlorine dosage. Quantum yields of excited triplet state of DOM (³DOM*), singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) first decreases and then increased in the UV/chlorine systems upon increasing chlorine dosages due to the different reaction pathways of the two DOM. Moreover, ³DOM* can not only be regarded as a "controller" of other reactive intermediates, but also effectively promote the photodegradation of bezafibrate, which is classified as a persistent organic contaminant. This study gives deep insights into effects of UV/chlorine on the photophysical and photochemical properties of DOM, and is helpful for understanding the dynamic roles of DOM in the photodegradation of micropollutants.

Photochemical origin of reactive radicals and halogenated organic substances in natural waters: A review

Halogenated organic compounds, also termed organohalogens, were initially regarded to be of almost exclusively anthropogenic origin. However, recent research has demonstrated that photochemical reactions are important abiotic sources of organohalogen compounds in sunlit surface waters. Halide ions (X^-, X represents Cl, Br and I) are common anions in natural waters and might be oxidized by reactive species originated from photochemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM) or inorganic photoactive species. The resulting reactive halogen species may react with organic substances with diverse bimolecular reaction rate constants, depending on the complexity and structure of organic substances. Therefore, the chemical mechanism of halogenation remains challenging to be fully elucidated. To better understand the trends in the existing data and to identify the knowledge gaps that may merit further investigation, this review gives an integrative summary on the sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and halogen radicals (X/X₂^-). Photochemical halogenation of phenolic compounds and formation of methyl halide and brominated organic pollutants are highlighted. By evaluating existing literature and identifying some uncertainties, this review emphasizes the environmental significance of sunlight-driven halogenation and proposes further research directions on mechanistic investigation and rational experimental design close to natural systems.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfathiazole and sulfamerazine: Influence of the CDOM components and seawater factors (salinity, pH, nitrate and bicarbonate)

Sulfonamides (SAs) are ubiquitous antibiotics that are increasingly detected in the aquatic environment, and may cause potential harm to the environment and humans. Indirect photodegradation has been considered to be a promising natural degradation process for antibiotics in the environment. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important participant in the indirect photodegradation of antibiotics. Indirect photodegradation of sulfathiazole (ST) and sulfamerazine (SM) were studied in the presence of CDOM and marine factors (salinity, pH, nitrate (NO₃^-) and bicarbonate (HCO₃^-)) to simulate photodegradation of these compounds in the coastal seawater environment. The main findings are as follows. First, the indirect photodegradation rates of ST and SM in the presence of CDOM were significantly increased and followed the pseudofirst order kinetics. Second, ¹O₂ played a critical role in the indirect photodegradation of ST and its contribution rate was 54.2%; ³CDOM^⁎ performed similarly in the case of SM with a 58.0% contribution rate. Third, CDOM was divided into four fluorescent components by excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC), including three exogenous components and an autochthonous component. The exogenous components with high molecular weight and higher number of aromatic groups played a decisive role in the indirect photodegradation of ST and SM due to their ability to generate higher levels of reactive intermediates (RIs). Finally, seawater factors (salinity, pH, NO₃^- and HCO₃^-) influenced the indirect photodegradation of ST and SM by influencing the steady-state concentrations of RIs. This report is the first study of indirect photodegradation of ST and SM from the perspective of the CDOM components and simulated coastal waters.

Photochemistry of dissolved organic matter extracted from coastal seawater: Excited triplet-states and contents of phenolic moieties

Coastal seawater constitutes an important ecosystem receiving inputs of organic micropollutants (OMPs) such as sulfa antibiotics from land-based sources or mariculture activities. It is necessary to investigate photodegradation of OMPs in coastal seawaters for assessing their environmental fate and risks. However, effects of coastal seawater dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) on OMPs photodegradation are largely unknown, given that chemical compositions of S-DOM are different from those of freshwater DOM. Herein, photochemical characteristics of S-DOM extracted from Dalian coastal seawaters were investigated by simulating photochemical experiment adopting sulfachloropyridazine as a case. Results show that S-DOM accelerates the photodegradation mainly through excited triplet-state DOM (³DOM*) with an apparent rate constant (4.43 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) ten folds of that of freshwater DOM, which is mainly due to much lower phenol contents detected in the S-DOM (0.022 mg-Gallic acid mg-C^-1). The S-DOM impacted by mariculture can photogenerate more high-energy ³DOM* than those less impacted by mariculture, further contributing to the high ³DOM* reactivity. The study shows that to accurately predict photolytic persistence of OMPs in field water bodies, it is of significance to determine the second-order reaction rate constants between ³DOM* and target OMPs using DOM extracted from relevant water bodies.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfadiazine in the presence of DOM: Effects of DOM components and main seawater constituents

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters has caused concern over the past decade. Sulfadiazine (SD) is a very common antibiotic widely used as human and fishery medicine, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the indirect photodegradation of SD; however, the influence of DOM compositions on SD indirect photodegradation is poorly understood. The roles of reactive intermediates (RIs) in the indirect photolysis of SD were assessed in this study. The reactive triplet states of DOM (³DOM∗) played a major role, whereas HO· and ¹O₂ played insignificant roles. DOM was divided into four components using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis. The components included three allochthonous humic-like components and one autochthonous humic-like component. The allochthonous humic-like components contributed more to RIs generation and SD indirect photolysis than the autochthonous humic-like component. A significant relationship between the indirect photodegradation of SD and the decay of DOM fluorescent components was found (correlation coefficient, 0.99), and the different indirect photodegradation of SD in various DOM solutions might be ascribed to the different components of DOM. The indirect photolysis rate of SD first increased and then decreased with increasing pH. SD photolysis was enhanced by low salinity but remained stable at high salinity. The increased carbonate concentration inhibited SD photolysis, whereas nitrate showed almost no effect in this study.

Simulated sunlight-induced inactivation of tetracycline resistant bacteria and effects of dissolved organic matter

The transmission of antibiotic resistance in surface water has attracted much attention due to its increasing threat to human health. The role of sunlight irradiation and the effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the transmission of antibiotic resistance are still unclear. In this study, photo-inactivation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) was investigated using antibiotic resistant E. coli (AR E. coli) that contained the tetracycline resistance gene (Tc-ARG) as a representative. The results showed that AR E. coli underwent significant photo-inactivation due to the membrane damage induced by direct irradiation and by the generated reactive oxygen species. Simulated sunlight irradiation specifically suppressed the expression of tetracycline resistance, which is attributed to the destruction of tetracycline-specific efflux pump. Tetracycline inhibited the photo-inactivation of AR E. coli due to its selective pressure on tetracycline resistant E. coli and competitive light absorption effect. Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), a representative DOM, promoted the inactivation of AR E. coli and further inhibited the expression of tetracycline resistance gene due to the generation of its excited triplet state, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radical. The extracellular Tc-ARG also underwent fast photodegradation under light irradiation and in the presence of SRFA, which leads to the decrease of its transformation efficiency. This study provided insight into the sunlight-induced inactivation of ARB, which is of significance for understanding the transmission of tetracycline resistance in surface water.

Formation and enhanced photodegradation of chlorinated derivatives of bisphenol A in wastewater treatment plant effluent

There are many reports on the detection and removal of emerging pollutants in the wastewater effluents, while the fate of their chlorinated derivatives generated during chlorination is not well understood. Here we investigated the photodegradation of chlorinated derivatives of bisphenol A (CDBPAs), mainly including 3-chlorobisphenol A, 3,3'-dichlorobisphenol A, 3,5-dichlorobisphenol A, 3,3',5-trichlorobisphenol A, and 3,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobisphenol A, under simulated sunlight. Distinct from BPA, CDBPAs underwent rapid direct photodegradation due to a pronounced bathochromic shift of UV absorption. The photodegradation of CDBPAs was significantly enhanced by effluent organic matter (EfOM) from the wastewater effluent. A series of quenching experiments and laser flash photolysis analysis verified the contribution of triplet states of EfOM (³EfOM∗) for the indirect photodegradation of CDBPAs with rate constant of ∼10⁹ M^-1 s^-1. Both direct and EfOM-induced indirect photodegradation of CDBPAs increased with a higher degree of chlorination. Furthermore, high-resolution mass spectrometry showed similar photoproducts for direct and indirect photodegradation of CDBPAs, mainly ascribed to the cleavage of C-Cl bond and hydroxylation with further cleavage of the benzene ring. The estrogenic activity of the photoproducts was diminished. These findings suggest that photodegradation is an important pathway for the removal and detoxication of CDBPAs from effluents and receiving natural waters under sunlight.

Dissolved organic matter dominating the photodegradation of free DNA bases in aquatic environments

Free DNA bases are widely present in the environments, and can be utilized by bacteria for their nucleic acids synthesis or as nutrition sources. In sunlit natural waters, these free bases probably undergo photodegradation which would change the bioavailable bases contents. Though the photodegradation of DNA has been investigated, the photodegradation behaviors of free bases may be quite different from those of DNA-confined bases in consideration of their different chemical environments. Herein, the photodegradation of four free bases (guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine) was investigated. Results show that direct photodegradation of free bases in phosphate buffer caused by UV was slow. However, the photodegradation of these free bases were greatly enhanced in dissolved organic matter (DOM) solution. In the presence of 10-50 mg/L DOM, the photodegradation rates of free bases were increased by 1.85-14.6 times compared to the controls without DOM. DOM could result in indirect photodegradation by producing hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) under irradiation, and this indirect photodegradation enhanced and dominated the free bases photodegradation. The •OH was involved in all four bases photodegradation, while the ¹O₂ only participated in guanine photodegradation. In phosphate buffer, the fastest photodegradation bases were pyrimidine, however, guanine became the fastest photodegradation base in DOM solution due to the selective oxidation of guanine by ¹O₂. In summary, DOM may be a determinant for free bases photodegradation in natural waters and thereby deeply influence free bases fates in aquatic environments.

Formation of free radicals by direct photolysis of halogenated phenols (HPs) and effects of DOM: A case study on monobromophenols

The free radicals play an important role to understand direct/indirect transformation mechanisms of organic pollutants. However, very few efforts have been made to elucidate the radicals produced by direct photolysis. In this study, the short-lived radicals generated under simulated sunlight irradiation from representative halogenated phenols (HPs), monobromophenols, were investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results showed that three radicals, carbon-centered radical (C), hydrogen radical (H) and hydroxyl radical (OH), were generated from the direct irradiation of HPs. Compared to other substitutions, halogenated atom at para-position led to the highest production of these radicals which is in accordance with the energies calculated by density functional theory. Based on the analyses of the reactive species and corresponding intermediate adducts, the possible reaction pathways for these radicals were tentatively proposed. Dissolved organic matters (DOM) could enhance the photodegradation of HPs by directly affecting the radicals' formation, mainly due to generation of excited triplet DOM (³DOM*). A positive correlation was found between the concentrations of hydrated electron and the steady state ³DOM* from different DOM. Our findings provided insights into environmental photochemical fate of HPs through their direct photolysis and will help more accurately understand their phototransformation mechanisms in the environment.

Photochemical degradation of nebivolol in different natural organic matter solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation: Kinetics, mechanism and degradation pathway

Nebivolol (NEB) is widely used for the treatment of hypertension and chronic heart failure and has become an ubiquitous emerging organic pollutant. It has been shown to undergo direct photolysis, but the role of DOM in its degradation kinetics and mechanism is not well understood. In this study, we studied the photochemical behavior of NEB in the presence of seawater DOM (SW-DOM) and freshwater DOM (SRNOM) under simulated sunlight irradiation. SW-DOM had a promotion effect on NEB photodegradation, whereas SRNOM retarded its photolytic transformation. After eliminating the influence of light screening, we found that the indirect photodegradation rate of NEB in the presence of SRNOM was lower than that in the presence of SW-DOM. Results show that the indirect photodegradation pathway occurred by reaction with triplet-excited DOM (³DOM*). The second-order rate constants for ³SW-DOM* and ³SRNOM* reaction with NEB are 3.7 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and 3.7 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. The electron donating capacity of SRNOM is higher than that of SW-DOM, indicating that SRNOM may contain more activated phenolic moieties. SRNOM may thus have higher antioxidant activity, leading a higher inhibitory effect on NEB photodegradation. A total of six degradation products were identified in the absence and presence of DOM by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. The substitution of F by OH-groups and further oxidation a OH-group in the lateral chain to a ketone, and cleavage of N-C bond by the attack of ³DOM* are here proposed as the main degradation pathways.

Development of a quantitative structure-activity relationship model for mechanistic interpretation and quantum yield prediction of singlet oxygen generation from dissolved organic matter

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is capable of degrading organic contaminants and inducing cell damage and inactivation of viruses. It is mainly generated through the interaction of dissolved oxygen with excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters. The present study aims at revealing the underlying mechanism of ¹O₂ generation and providing a potential tool for predicting the quantum yield of ¹O₂ (Φ_1O2) generation from DOM by constructing a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model. The determined Φ_1O2 values for the selected DOM-analogs range from (0.54 ± 0.23) × 10^-2 to (62.03 ± 2.97) × 10^-2. A QSAR model was constructed and was proved to have satisfactory goodness-of-fit and robustness. The QSAR model was successfully used to predict the Φ_1O2 of Suwannee River fulvic acid. Mechanistic interpretation of the descriptors in the model showed that hydrophobicity, molecular complexity and the presence of carbonyl groups in DOM play crucial roles in the generation of ¹O₂ from DOM. The presence of other heteroatoms besides O, such as N and S, also affects the generation of ¹O₂. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the generation of ¹O₂ from DOM in sunlit natural waters.

Opposite pH-dependent roles of hydroxyl radicals in ozonation and UV photolysis of genistein

Phytoestrogens were frequently detected in municipal or industrial wastewater, and raised great attentions due to potential risks to humans or organisms. Until now, transformation mechanisms of phytoestrogens in advanced wastewater treatments were largely unknown. Here, pH influence mechanisms on transformations of phytoestrogens during two typical advanced wastewater treatments (ozonation and photolysis) were investigated, employing genistein (Gs) as a case. Removal efficiencies of Gs decreased significantly with increases of pH during ozonation, while photolytic rates increased by 44 or 200 times from pH 4.9 to 11.6 under irradiations without or with UVC. pH increases caused both dissociation of Gs and formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in ozonation or photolysis, however, led to opposite changes to degradation rates. This was because that OH played negatively as a competitor for O₃ in ozonation, but acted as an accelerating species inducing self-sensitized photooxidation of Gs under UV light. Ozonation and photolytic products of Gs were similar at pH 4.9 or 8.6, but were totally different at pH 11.6. Most of the transformation products maintained isoflavone structures, and might possess phytoestrogenic effects. This study provided a deep insight into the pH influencing mechanism on typical advanced wastewater treatment processes of phytoestrogens. MAIN FINDING OF THE WORK: Opposite pH-dependent degradation mechanisms caused by hydroxyl radicals (OH) were elucidated for ozonation and UV photolysis of phytoestrogens, taking genistein as a case.

Effects of dissolved organic matter derived from freshwater and seawater on photodegradation of three antiviral drugs

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most important light absorber that may induce indirect photolytic transformation of organic pollutants in natural waters. In this study, effects of DOM derived from freshwater and seawater on the photodegradation of three antiviral drugs acyclovir, lamivudine and zidovudine were investigated. Results show that the photodegradation of acyclovir is promoted mainly by excited triplet states DOM (³DOM*), and the photodegradation of lamivudine is accelerated by ³DOM*, •OH and ¹O₂ together; however, the photodegradation of zidovudine is inhibited by DOM mainly via light screening. Compared with DOM from freshwater, promotion effect of DOM extracted from seawater (SDOM) on the photodegradation of acyclovir and lamivudine is weaker, which is attributed to lower productivity of reactive intermediates. On the other hand, inhibitory effect of SDOM on the photodegradation of zidovudine is also weaker, which is due to weaker light screening caused by lower light absorption. Photodegradation half-lives of the three antiviral drugs are predicted to be all more than 20 days in freshwater and seawater bodies of the Yellow River estuarine region. These findings are significant for understanding the phototransformation processes of antiviral drugs and other organic pollutants in estuarine and coastal regions.
