Coupled Kinetics of Ferrihydrite Transformation and As(V) Sequestration under the Effect of Humic Acids: A Mechanistic and Quantitative Study

Iron slag/activated carbon-electrokinetic system with anolyte recycling for single and mixture heavy metals remediation

The electrokinetic process has been proposed for in-situ soil remediation to minimize excavation work and exposure to hazardous materials. The precipitation of heavy metals in alkaline pH near the cathode is still challenging. Reactive filter media and enhancement agents have been used in electrokinetics to enhance the removal of heavy metals. This study investigated coupling industrial iron slag waste and iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media with electrokinetic for a single and mixture of heavy metals treatment. Instead of using acid enhancement agents, the anolyte solution was recycled to neutralize the alkaline front at the cathode, reducing the operation cost and chemical use. Experiments were conducted for 2 and 3 weeks at 20 mA electric current. Copper removal increased from 3.11 % to 23 % when iron slag reactive filter media was coupled with electrokinetic. Copper removal increased to 70.14 % in the electrokinetic experiment with iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media. The copper removal increased to 89.21 % when the anolyte solution was recycled to the cathode compartment. Copper removal reached 93.45 % when the reactive filter media-electrokinetic process with anolyte recirculation was extended to 3 weeks. The reactive filter media- an electrokinetic process with anolyte recycling was evaluated for removing copper, nickel, and zinc mixture, and results revealed 81.1 % copper removal, 89.04 % nickel removal, and 92.31 % zinc removal in a 3-week experiment. The greater nickel and zinc removal is attributed to their higher solubility than copper. The results demonstrated the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the electrokinetic with iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media with anolyte recirculation for soil remediation from heavy metals.

Hidden Role of Organic Matter in the Immobilization and Transformation of Iodine on Fe-OM Associations

The biogeochemical processes of iodine are typically coupled with organic matter (OM) and the dynamic transformation of iron (Fe) minerals in aquifer systems, which are further regulated by the association of OM with Fe minerals. However, the roles of OM in the mobility of iodine on Fe-OM associations remain poorly understood. Based on batch adsorption experiments and subsequent solid-phase characterization, we delved into the immobilization and transformation of iodate and iodide on Fe-OM associations with different C/Fe ratios under anaerobic conditions. The results indicated that the Fe-OM associations with a higher C/Fe ratio (=1) exhibited greater capacity for immobilizing iodine (∼60-80% for iodate), which was attributed to the higher affinity of iodine to OM and the significantly decreased extent of Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation caused by associated OM. The organic compounds abundant in oxygen with high unsaturation were more preferentially associated with ferrihydrite than those with poor oxygen and low unsaturation; thus, the associated OM was capable of binding with 28.1-45.4% of reactive iodine. At comparable C/Fe ratios, the mobilization of iodine and aromatic organic compounds was more susceptible in the adsorption complexes compared to the coprecipitates. These new findings contribute to a deeper understanding of iodine cycling that is controlled by Fe-OM associations in anaerobic environments.

Structure Evolution of Iron (Hydr)oxides under Nanoconfinement and Its Implication for Water Treatment

In the development of nanoenabled technologies for large-scale water treatment, immobilizing nanosized functional materials into the confined space of suitable substrates is one of the most effective strategies. However, the intrinsic effects of nanoconfinement on the decontamination performance of nanomaterials, particularly in terms of structural modulation, are rarely unveiled. Herein, we investigate the structure evolution and decontamination performance of iron (hydr)oxide nanoparticles, a widely used material for water treatment, when confined in track-etched (TE) membranes with channel sizes varying from 200 to 20 nm. Nanoconfinement drives phase transformation from ferrihydrite to goethite, rather than to hematite occurring in bulk systems, and the increase in the nanoconfinement degree from 200 to 20 nm leads to a significant drop in the fraction of the goethite phase within the aged products (from 41% to 0%). The nanoconfinement configuration is believed to greatly slow down the phase transformation kinetics, thereby preserving the specific adsorption of ferrihydrite toward As(V) even after 20-day aging at 343 K. This study unravels the structure evolution of confined iron hydroxide nanoparticles and provides new insights into the temporospatial effects of nanoconfinement on improving the water decontamination performance.

Coupling of Dissolved Organic Matter Molecular Fractionation with Iron and Sulfur Transformations during Sulfidation-Reoxidation Cycling

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides and organic matter (OM) are intimately associated in natural environments, and their fate might be linked to sulfur during sulfidation-reoxidation cycling. However, the coupling of DOM molecular fractionation with Fe and S transformations following a full sulfidation-reoxidation cycle remains poorly understood. Here, we reacted Fh and Fh-OM associations with S(-II) anaerobically and then exposed the sulfidic systems to air. S(-II) preferentially reacted with Fh to form inorganic S (e.g., mackinawite, S0, and S22-) over being incorporated into OM as organic S and therefore indirectly affected OM fate by altering Fe speciation. Fh sulfidation was inhibited by associated OM, and the main secondary Fe species were mackinawite, Fe(II)-OM compounds, and lepidocrocite. Concomitantly, organic molecules high in unsaturation, aromaticity, and molecular weight were detached from solid-phase Fe species due to their lower affinities for secondary Fe species than for Fh. During the reoxidation stage, the previously formed Fe(II) species were reoxidized to Fh with a stronger aggregation, which recaptured formerly released OM with higher selectivity. Additionally, •OH was generated from Fe(II) oxygenation and degraded a portion of the DOM molecules. Overall, these results have significant implications for Fe, C, and S cycling in S-rich environments characterized by oscillating redox conditions.

Enhanced Oxidation of Organic Compounds by the Ferrihydrite-Ferrate System: The Role of Intramolecular Electron Transfer and Intermediate Iron Species

Previous studies mostly held that the oxidation capacity of ferrate depends on the involvement of intermediate iron species (i.e., FeIV/FeV), however, the potential role of the metastable complex was disregarded in ferrate-based heterogeneous catalytic oxidation processes. Herein, we reported a complexation-mediated electron transfer mechanism in the ferrihydrite-ferrate system toward sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A synergy between intermediate FeIV/FeV oxidation and the intramolecular electron transfer step was proposed. Specifically, the conversion of phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2) suggested that FeIV/FeV was involved in the oxidation of SMX. Moreover, based on the in situ Raman test and chronopotentiometry analysis, the formation of the metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate was found, which possesses higher oxidation potential than free ferrate and could achieve the preliminary oxidation of organics via the electron transfer step. In addition, the amino group of SMX could complex with ferrate, and the resulting metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate would combine further with SMX molecules, leading to intramolecular electron transfer and SMX degradation. The ferrate loss experiments suggested that ferrihydrite could accelerate the decomposition of ferrate. Finally, the effects of pH value, anions, humic acid, and actual water on the degradation of SMX by ferrihydrite-ferrate were also revealed. Overall, ferrihydrite demonstrated high catalytic capacity, good reusability, and nontoxic performance for ferrate activation. The ferrihydrite-ferrate process may be a green and promising method for organic removal in wastewater treatment.

Organic Matter Counteracts the Enhancement of Cr(III) Extractability during the Fe(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation: A Nanoscale- and Molecular-Level Investigation

Phase transformation of ferrihydrite to more stable Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, catalyzed by iron(II) [Fe(II)], significantly influences the mobility of heavy metals [e.g., chromium (Cr)] associated with ferrihydrite. However, the impact of organic matter (OM) on the behavior of Cr(III) in the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of ferrihydrite and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of the coprecipitates of Fe(III), Cr(III), or rice straw-derived OM was studied at the nanoscale and molecular levels using Fe and Cr K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM). Batch extraction results suggested that the OM counteracted the enhancement of Cr(III) extractability during the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation. Cs-STEM and XAS analysis suggested that Cr(III) could be incorporated into the goethite formed by Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation, which, however, was inhibited by the OM. Furthermore, Cs-STEM analysis also provided direct nanoscale level evidence that residual ferrihydrite could re-immobilize the released Cr(III) during the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation process. These results highlighted that the decreased extractability of Cr(III) mainly resulted from the inhibition of OM on the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of ferrihydrite to secondary Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, which facilitates insightful understanding and prediction of the geochemical cycling of Cr in soils with active redox dynamics.

Reductive Sequestration of Cr(VI) and Immobilization of C during the Microbially Mediated Transformation of Ferrihydrite-Cr(VI)-Fulvic Acid Coprecipitates

Cr(VI) detoxification and organic matter (OM) stabilization are usually influenced by the biological transformation of iron (Fe) minerals; however, the underlying mechanisms of metal-reducing bacteria on the coupled kinetics of Fe minerals, Cr, and OM remain unclear. Here, the reductive sequestration of Cr(VI) and immobilization of fulvic acid (FA) during the microbially mediated phase transformation of ferrihydrite with varying Cr/Fe ratios were investigated. No phase transformation occurred until Cr(VI) was completely reduced, and the ferrihydrite transformation rate decreased as the Cr/Fe ratio increased. Microscopic analysis was uncovered, which revealed that the resulting Cr(III) was incorporated into the lattice structure of magnetite and goethite, whereas OM was mainly adsorbed on goethite and magnetite surfaces and located within pore spaces. Fine line scan profiles showed that OM adsorbed on the Fe mineral surface had a lower oxidation state than that within nanopores, and C adsorbed on the magnetite surface had the highest oxidation state. During reductive transformation, the immobilization of FA by Fe minerals was predominantly via surface complexation, and OM with highly aromatic and unsaturated structures and low H/C ratios was easily adsorbed by Fe minerals or decomposed by bacteria, whereas Cr/Fe ratios had little effect on the binding of Fe minerals and OM and the variations in OM components. Owing to the inhibition of crystalline Fe minerals and nanopore formation in the presence of Cr, Cr sequestration and C immobilization can be synchronously favored at low Cr/Fe ratios. These findings provide a profound theoretical basis for Cr detoxification and synchronous sequestration of Cr and C in anoxic soils and sediments.

Oxyanion Surface Complexes Control the Kinetics and Pathway of Ferrihydrite Transformation to Goethite and Hematite

The rate and pathway of ferrihydrite (Fh) transformation at oxic conditions to more stable products is controlled largely by temperature, pH, and the presence of other ions in the system such as nitrate (NO₃^-), sulfate (SO₄^2-), and arsenate (AsO₄^3-). Although the mechanism of Fh transformation and oxyanion complexation have been separately studied, the effect of surface complex type and strength on the rate and pathway remains only partly understood. We have developed a kinetic model that describes the effects of surface complex type and strength on Fh transformation to goethite (Gt) and hematite (Hm). Two sets of oxyanion-adsorbed Fh samples were prepared, nonbuffered and buffered, aged at 70 ± 1.5 °C, and then characterized using synchrotron X-ray scattering methods and wet chemical analysis. Kinetic modeling showed a significant decrease in the rate of Fh transformation for oxyanion surface complexes dominated by strong inner-sphere (SO₄^2- and AsO₄^3-) versus weak outer-sphere (NO₃^-) bonding and the control. The results also showed that the Fh transformation pathway is influenced by the type of surface complex such that with increasing strength of bonding, a smaller fraction of Gt forms compared with Hm. These findings are important for understanding and predicting the role of Fh in controlling the transport and fate of metal and metalloid oxyanions in natural and applied systems.

Sunlight-Induced Interfacial Electron Transfer of Ferrihydrite under Oxic Conditions: Mineral Transformation and Redox Active Species Production

Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation under anoxic conditions has been intensively studied, while such mechanisms are insufficient to be applied in oxic environments with depleted Fe(II). Here, we investigated expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen, without initial addition of dissolved Fe(II). We found that sunlight significantly facilitated the transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite compared to that under dark conditions. Redox active species (hole-electron pairs, reactive radicals, and Fe(II)) were produced from the ferrihydrite interface via the photoinduced electron transfer processes. Experiments with systematically varied wet chemistry conditions probed the relative contributions of three pathways for the production of hydroxyl radicals: (1) oxidation of water (5.0%); (2) reduction of dissolved oxygen (40.9%); and (3) photolysis of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes (54.1%). Results also showed superoxide radicals as the main oxidant for Fe(II) reoxidation under acidic conditions, thus promoting the ferrihydrite transformation. The presence of inorganic ions (chloride, sulfate, and nitrate) did not only affect the hydrolysis and precipitation of Fe(III) but also the generation of radicals via photoinduced charge transfer reactions. The involvement of redox active species and the accompanying mineral transformations would exert a profound effect on the fate of multivalent elements and organic contaminants in aquatic environments.

Direct and Indirect Electron Transfer Routes of Chromium(VI) Reduction with Different Crystalline Ferric Oxyhydroxides in the Presence of Pyrogenic Carbon

Electron transfer mediated by iron minerals is considered as a critical redox step for the dynamics of pollutants in soil. Herein, we explored the reduction process of Cr(VI) with different crystalline ferric oxyhydroxides in the presence of pyrogenic carbon (biochar). Both low- and high-crystallinity ferric oxyhydroxides induced Cr(VI) immobilization mainly via the sorption process, with a limited reduction process. However, the Cr(VI) reduction immobilization was inspired by the copresence of biochar. Low-crystallinity ferric oxyhydroxide had an intense chemical combination with biochar and strong sorption for Cr(VI) via inner-sphere complexation, leading to the indirect electron transfer route for Cr(VI) reduction, that is, the electron first transferred from biochar to iron mineral through C-O-Fe binding and then to Cr(VI) with Fe(III)/Fe(II) transformation on ferric oxyhydroxides. With increasing crystallinity of ferric oxyhydroxides, the direct electron transfer between biochar and Cr(VI) became the main electron transfer avenue for Cr(VI) reduction. The indirect electron transfer was suppressed in the high-crystallinity ferric oxyhydroxides due to less sorption of Cr(VI), limited combination with biochar, and higher iron stability. This study demonstrates that electron transfer mechanisms involving iron minerals change with the mineral crystallization process, which would affect the geochemical process of contaminants with pyrogenic carbon.

Coprecipitation of Fe/Cr Hydroxides with Organics: Roles of Organic Properties in Composition and Stability of the Coprecipitates

Iron hydroxides are important scavengers for dissolved chromium (Cr) via coprecipitation processes; however, the influences of organic matter (OM) on Cr sequestration in Fe/Cr-OM ternary systems and the stability of the coprecipitates are not well understood. Here, Fe/Cr-OM coprecipitation was conducted at pH 3, and Cr hydroxide was undersaturated. Acetic acid (HAc), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) were selected as model OMs, which showed different complexation capabilities with Fe/Cr ions and Fe/Cr hydroxide particles. HAc had no significant effect on the coprecipitation, as the monodentate carboxyl ligand in HAc did not favor complexation with dissolved Fe/Cr ions or Fe/Cr hydroxide nanoparticles. Contrarily, PAA and SRNOM with polydentate carboxyl ligand had strong complexation with Fe/Cr ions and Fe/Cr hydroxide nanoparticles, leading to significant amounts of PAA/SRNOM sequestered in the coprecipitates, which caused the structural disorder and fast aggregation of the coprecipitates. In comparison with that of PAA, preferential complexation of Cr ions with SRNOM resulted in higher Cr/Fe ratios in the coprecipitates. This study advances the fundamental understanding of Fe/Cr-OM coprecipitation and mechanisms controlling the composition and stability of the coprecipitates, which is essential for successful Cr remediation and removal in both natural and engineered settings.

Impact of Organic Matter on Microbially-Mediated Reduction and Mobilization of Arsenic and Iron in Arsenic(V)-Bearing Ferrihydrite

Under anoxic conditions, the interactions between As-bearing ferrihydrite (Fh) and As(V)-reducing bacteria are known to cause Fh transformations and As mobilization. However, the impact of different types of organic matter (OM) on microbial As/Fe transformation in As-bearing Fh-organic associations remains unclear. In our study, we therefore exposed arsenate-adsorbed ferrihydrite, ferrihydrite-PGA (polygalacturonic acid), and ferrihydrite-HA (humic acid) complexes to two typical Fe(III)- and As(V)-reducing bacteria, and followed the fate of Fe and As in the solid and aqueous phases. Results show that PGA and HA promoted the reductive dissolution of Fh, resulting in 0.7-1.6 and 0.8-1.9 times more As release than in the OM-free Fh, respectively. This was achieved by higher cell numbers in the presence of PGA, and through Fe-reduction via electron-shuttling facilitated by HA. Arsenic-XAS results showed that the solid-phase arsenite fraction in Fh-PGA and Fh-HA was 15-19% and 27-28% higher than in pure Fh, respectively. The solid-associated arsenite fraction likely increased because PGA promoted cell growth and As(V) reduction, while HA provided electron shuttling compounds for direct microbial As(V)-reduction. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that As speciation and partitioning during microbial reduction of Fh-organic associations are strongly influenced by PGA and HA, as well as the strains' abilities to utilize electron-shuttling compounds.

Molecular Sorption Mechanisms of Cr(III) to Organo-Ferrihydrite Coprecipitates Using Synchrotron-Based EXAFS and STXM Techniques

Ubiquitous organo-ferrihydrite coprecipitates (OFC) significantly affect the mobility and availability of Cr in soil through sorption, but the underlying sorption mechanisms remain unclear at the molecular level. Due to the potential formation of OFC in agricultural soils with returned crop straws, we synthesized OFC with rice/rape straw-derived carbon (C) sources and different loadings. The molecular sorption mechanisms of Cr(III) to the synthesized OFC under different conditions were investigated by Cr K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). Cr(III) sorption by OFC decreased with increasing C loading and decreasing pH, regardless of C sources. Moreover, inhibition of Cr(III) sorption to OFC with high C loading occurred when ionic strength (IS) increased, suggesting the presence of outer-sphere complexed Cr(III). EXAFS analysis revealed that more Cr(III) were bound to ferrihydrite of the OFC at a relatively high pH, and organically bound Cr(III) enhanced when increasing C loading and decreasing IS. STXM analysis strongly suggested that C loading reduced Cr(III) sorption through blocking the binding sites on the ferrihydrite, which overwhelmed Cr(III) retention by the direct binding of Cr(III) to carboxyl of the particulate organic matter (OM) and OM coated on the Fh fractions of the OFC. These findings facilitated the comprehensive understanding of the sorption mechanisms of Cr(III) to OFC at the molecular level, which will assist the prediction of Cr(III) mobility in soils, particularly for Cr(III)-contaminated agricultural soils with the application of crop straws.

Assessing the Reactive Surface Area of Soils and the Association of Soil Organic Carbon with Natural Oxide Nanoparticles Using Ferrihydrite as Proxy

Assessment of the surface reactivity of natural metal-(hydr)oxide nanoparticles is necessary for predicting ion adsorption phenomena in soils using surface complexation modeling. Here, we describe how the equilibrium concentrations of PO₄, obtained with 0.5 M NaHCO₃ extractions at different solution-to-soil ratios, can be interpreted with a state-of-the-art ion adsorption model for ferrihydrite to assess the reactive surface area (RSA) of agricultural top soils. Simultaneously, the method reveals the fraction of reversibly adsorbed soil PO₄ (R-PO₄). The applied ion-probing methodology shows that ferrihydrite is a better proxy than goethite for consistently assessing RSA and R-PO₄. The R-PO₄ pool agrees well with ammonium oxalate (AO)-extractable phosphorus, but only if measured as orthophosphate. The RSA varied between ∼2 and 20 m²/g soil. The corresponding specific surface area (SSA) of the natural metal-(hydr)oxide fraction is ∼350-1400 m²/g, illustrating that this property is highly variable and cannot be represented by a single value based on the AO-extractable oxide content. The soil organic carbon (SOC) content of our top soils increases linearly not only with the increase in RSA but remarkably also with the increase in mean particle size (1.5-5 nm). To explain these observations, we present a structural model for organo-mineral associations based on the coordination of SOC particles to metal-(hydr)oxide cores.

Hausdorff Fractal Derivative Model to Characterize Transport of Inorganic Arsenic in Porous Media

The increasing severity of arsenic pollution has progressively threatened human life and attracted much attention. One of the important topics in environmental sciences is to accurately describe the inorganic arsenic transport in heterogeneous porous media, occurring anomalous diffusion phenomenon, which ultimately benefits the control of arsenic pollution. In this paper, we re-evaluate the dataset of the inorganic arsenic transport in porous media in previous work by using a time-Hausdorff fractal model (HADE). Transport experiments of arsenic-carrying (As(V)) ferric humate complex colloids through a quartz sand column were carried out under varying dissolved organic matter (humic acid) concentrations, pH values, ionic strengths, and ferric concentrations. The results show that under our experimental settings, arsenic migration is promoted with the increase of concentrations of HA, ferric ion and sodium ion, and pH to varying degrees. The intensity of arsenic sub-diffusion behavior is opposite to that of arsenic transport. The HADE model can describe the migration behavior of arsenic well, and the value of the time fractal derivative can reflect the diffusion intensity of arsenic migration to a certain extent. By comparing the HADE model, ADE model, and time-fractional model (fADE) to the experimental data, the HADE model can significantly improve all the simulation results of capturing As(V) breakthrough curves (BTCs).

Citrate Controls Fe(II)-Catalyzed Transformation of Ferrihydrite by Complexation of the Labile Fe(III) Intermediate

Ferrihydrite (Fh) is generally associated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural environments due to a strong sorption affinity at circumneutral pH and its high specific surface area. In suboxic conditions, aqueous Fe(II) (Fe(II)_aq) can catalyze transformation of Fh into more stable crystalline Fe(III) phases, but how DOM influences the transformation kinetics and pathway is still unclear. Using citrate as a surrogate, we have examined Fh transformation with 1 mM Fe(II)_aq and 0-60 μM citrate at pH 7.2. We focus on quantifying the time-dependent concentrations of sorbed Fe(II), structural Fe(II), and a key intermediate species, labile Fe(III) (Fe(III)_labile), resulting from interfacial electron transfer (IET), and how these species correlate with the evolution of lepidocrocite (Lp), magnetite (Mt), and goethite (Gt) products. Low concentrations of citrate significantly impact the proportions of Lp/Gt, and the collective results reveal that its effect is primarily through its ability to complex labile Fe(III) and thereby disrupt polymerization into product crystallites, as opposed to modifying the surface properties of Fh or inhibiting IET. The emergence of a Mt coprecipitate is observed in the transformation experiments with 5-10 μM citrate, when the Fe(II)/Fe(III)_labile ratio on/near the Fh surface is close to 0.5, the stoichiometric Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio in Mt. At the molecular level, the findings suggest that citrate, and by extension DOM, can modify the relative rates of olation and oxolation reactions that assemble labile Fe(III) into various product minerals.

Quantifying Microbially Mediated Kinetics of Ferrihydrite Transformation and Arsenic Reduction: Role of the Arsenate-Reducing Gene Expression Pattern

The behavior of arsenic (As) is usually coupled with iron (Fe) oxide transformation and mediated by both abiotic reactions and microbial processes in the environment. However, quantitative models for the coupled kinetic processes, which specifically consider the arsenate-reducing gene expression correspondent to different reaction conditions, are lacking. In this study, based on the pure cultured Shewanella putrefaciens incubation experiments, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and a suite of microbial analyses, we developed a coupled kinetics model for microbially mediated As reduction and Fe oxide transformation and specifically quantified the As(V) reduction rate coefficients based on the expression patterns of arrA genes. The model reasonably described the temporal changes of As speciation and distribution. The microbial reduction rates of As(V) varied dramatically during the reactions, which were well represented by the varying transcript abundances of arrA genes at different As concentrations. The contributions of biotic and abiotic reactions to the overall reaction rates were assessed. The results improved our quantitative understanding on the key role of As(V)-reducing genes in regulating the speciation and distribution of As. The kinetic modeling approaches based on microbial gene expression patterns are promising for developing comprehensive biogeochemical models of As involving multiple coupled reactions.

Molecular Mechanisms of Chromium(III) Immobilization by Organo-Ferrihydrite Co-precipitates: The Significant Roles of Ferrihydrite and Carboxyl

The interaction mechanisms of heavy metals with organo-Fe hydroxides co-precipitates (OFC) remain unclear due to the structural complexity of the OFC. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the immobilization mechanisms of Cr(III) by the OFC, which was prepared by co-precipitating Fe³⁺ with rice/rape straw-derived dissolved organic carbon, through sorption and co-precipitation using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). At an Fe/C molar ratio ≥ 0.3, both the sorption and co-precipitation immobilized the majority of Cr(III), but the co-precipitation desorbed less Cr(III) than the sorption regardless of DOC loadings and sources. In contrast, Cr(III) immobilization was significantly reduced at an Fe/C molar ratio of 0.1 for both reactions. Linear combination fitting of Cr K-edge XANES spectra revealed the predominance of ferrihydrite-bound Cr(III), but enhanced organic Cr(III) occurred with increased organic carbon (OC) loading for both the sorption and co-precipitation. STXM coupled with multi-edge XANES analysis confirmed the primary association of Cr(III) with ferrihydrite and directly probed carboxyl as the binding site for Cr(III) retention on the OC constituents of the OFC. These results provided new molecular-level insights into the Cr(III) retention mechanisms on the OFC, particularly for the interactions of Cr(III) and OC constituents of the OFC, which could benefit the management of Cr-contaminated soils with straw returning.

In Vitro Assessment of Arsenic Release and Transformation from As(V)-Sorbed Goethite and Jarosite: The Influence of Human Gut Microbiota

The importance of arsenic metabolism by gut microbiota has been evidenced in risk characterization from As exposures. In this study, we evaluated the metabolic potency of human gut microbiota toward As(V)-sorbed goethite and jarosite, presenting different behaviors of As release, and the solid-liquid transformation and partitioning. The release of As occurred mainly in the small intestinal phase for jarosite and in the colon phase for goethite, respectively. We found higher degree of As(V) and Fe(III) reduction by human gut microbiota in the colon digests of goethite than jarosite. Speciation analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, revealed that 43.2% and 8.5% of total As was present as As(III) in the liquid and solid phase, respectively, after goethite incubation, whereas almost all generated As(III) was in the colon digests of jarosite. Therefore, As bioaccessibility in human gastrointestinal tract was predominantly contributed to Fe(III) dissolution in jarosite, and to microbial reduction of Fe(III) and As(V) in goethite. It expanded our knowledge on the role of Fe minerals in human health risk assessment associated with soil As exposures.

Formation and Transport of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe Colloids upon Reaction of Cr(VI) with NOM-Fe(II) Colloids at Anoxic-Oxic Interfaces

Natural organic matter-iron (NOM-Fe) colloids are ubiquitous at anoxic-oxic interfaces of subsurface environments. Fe(II) or NOM can chemically reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and the formation of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe colloids can control the fate and transport of Cr. We explored the formation and transport of Cr(III)-humic acid (HA)-Fe colloids upon reaction of Cr(VI) with HA-Fe(II) colloids over a range of environmentally relevant conditions. Cr(VI) was completely reduced by HA-Fe(II) complexes under anoxic conditions, and the formation of Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids depended on HA concentration (or molar C/Fe ratio) and redox conditions. No colloids formed at HA concentrations below 3.5 mg C/L (C/Fe ratio below 1.6), but Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids formed at higher HA concentrations. In column experiments, Cr(III)-HA-Fe(III) colloids formed under oxic conditions were readily transported through sand-packed porous media. Colloidal stability measurements further suggest that Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids are highly stable and persist for at least 20 days without substantial change in particle size. This stability is attributed to the enrichment of free HA adsorbed on the Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloid surfaces, intensifying the electrostatic and/or steric repulsion interactions between particles. The new insights provided here are important for evaluating the long-term fate and transport of Cr in organic-rich redox transition zones.

Calcium in Carbonate Water Facilitates the Transport of U(VI) in Brassica juncea Roots and Enables Root-to-Shoot Translocation

The role of calcium (Ca) on the cellular distribution of U(VI) in Brassica juncea roots and root-to-shoot translocation was investigated using hydroponic experiments, microscopy, and spectroscopy. Uranium accumulated mainly in the roots (727-9376 mg kg-1) after 30 days of exposure to 80 μM dissolved U in water containing 1 mM HCO3 - at different Ca concentrations (0-6 mM) at pH 7.5. However, the concentration of U in the shoots increased 22 times in experiments with 6 mM Ca compared to 0 mM Ca. In the Ca control experiment, transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses detected U-P-bearing precipitates in the cortical apoplast of parenchyma cells. In experiments with 0.3 mM Ca, U-P-bearing precipitates were detected in the cortical apoplast and the bordered pits of xylem cells. In experiments with 6 mM Ca, U-P-bearing precipitates aggregated in the xylem with no apoplastic precipitation. These results indicate that Ca in carbonate water inhibits the transport and precipitation of U in the root cortical apoplast and facilitates the symplastic transport and translocation toward shoots. These findings reveal the considerable role of Ca in the presence of carbonate in facilitating the transport of U in plants and present new insights for future assessment and phytoremediation strategies.

Coupled Kinetics Model for Microbially Mediated Arsenic Reduction and Adsorption/Desorption on Iron Oxides: Role of Arsenic Desorption Induced by Microbes

The dynamic behavior of arsenic (As) species is closely associated with iron mineral dissolution/transformation in the environment. Bacterially induced As(V) desorption from iron oxides may be another important process that facilitates As(V) release from iron oxides without significant reductive dissolution of iron oxides. Under the impact of bacterially induced desorption, As kinetic behavior is controlled by both the microbial reduction of As(V) and the As(III)&As(V) reactions on iron oxide surfaces. However, there is still a lack of quantitative understanding on the coupled kinetics of these processes in complex systems. We developed a quantitative model that integrated the time-dependent microbial reduction of As(V) with nonlinear As(III)&As(V) adsorption/desorption kinetics on iron oxides under the impact of bacterially induced As(V) desorption. We collected and modeled literature data from 11 representative studies, in which microbial reduction reactions occurred with minimal iron oxide dissolution/transformation. Our model highlighted the significance of microbially induced As(V) desorption and time-dependent changes of microbial reduction rates. The model can quantitatively assess the roles and the coupling of individual reactions in controlling the overall reaction rates. It provided a basis for developing comprehensive models for As cycling in the environment by coupling with other chemical, physical, and microbial processes.

Double-Edged Effect of Humic Acid on Multiple Sorption Modes of Calcined Layered Double Hydroxides: Inhibition and Promotion

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a typical class of anionic clay minerals whose structural memory effect has been widely used in pollutant adsorption. However, the influencing mechanism of humic acid (HA) on the structural memory effect in adsorption is not clear. In this study, HA was extracted from black soil and sediments, and its effect on the structural memory effect of LDHs with different divalent metals was evaluated in adsorption. Borate complexed with HAs and HAs promoted the dissolution of magnesium-calcined LDHs (Mg-CLDH), which enhanced their adsorption rate by Mg-CLDH. However, the adsorbed HA caused a decline in the crystallinity of the regenerated Mg-LDH and an incomplete structural transformation, thereby resulting in decreased adsorption capacity. After the complexation of HAs with borate, the resulting compound was adsorbed on the surface of Zn-CLDH. The adsorption rate of borate was effectively improved in the initial stage, but at the same time slowed down the hydration and structural regeneration of Zn-CLDH. Meanwhile, the surface-adsorbed HAs also prevented borate from entering the newly formed layer inside the particles and led to a significant decrease in adsorption performance. When Ca-CLDH was used to adsorb borate, the process mainly occurred through the formation of ettringite. However, the presence of HAs enhanced the stability of the restructured LDHs and hindered the dissolution of Ca-CLDH and the reaction with B(OH)₄^- to form ettringite during the regeneration process, which severely inhibited the sorption of borate.

Effect of Calcium on the Bioavailability of Dissolved Uranium(VI) in Plant Roots under Circumneutral pH

We integrated field measurements, hydroponic experiments, microscopy, and spectroscopy to investigate the effect of Ca(II) on dissolved U(VI) uptake by plants in 1 mM HCO₃^- solutions at circumneutral pH. The accumulation of U in plants (3.1-21.3 mg kg^-1) from the stream bank of the Rio Paguate, Jackpile Mine, New Mexico served as a motivation for this study. Brassica juncea was the model plant used for the laboratory experiments conducted over a range of U (30-700 μg L^-1) and Ca (0-240 mg L^-1) concentrations. The initial U uptake followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The initial U uptake rate ( V₀) ranged from 4.4 to 62 μg g^-1 h^-1 in experiments with no added Ca and from 0.73 to 2.07 μg g^-1 h^-1 in experiments with 12 mg L^-1 Ca. No measurable U uptake over time was detected for experiments with 240 mg L^-1 Ca. Ternary Ca-U-CO₃ complexes may affect the decrease in U bioavailability observed in this study. Elemental X-ray mapping using scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectrometry detected U-P-bearing precipitates within root cell walls in water free of Ca. These results suggest that root interactions with Ca and carbonate in solution affect the bioavailability of U in plants. This study contributes relevant information to applications related to U transport and remediation of contaminated sites.
