Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in the atmospheric and the human respiratory system, indicating that the respiratory tract is a significant exposure route for MPs. However, the effect of inhaled MPs on cognitive function has not been adequately studied. Here, a C57BL/6 J mouse model of inhalation exposure to polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs, 5 µm, 60 d) is established by intratracheal instillation. Interestingly, in vivo fluorescence imaging and transmission electron microscopy reveal that PS-MPs do not accumulate in the brain. However, behavioral experiments shows that cognitive function of mice is impaired, accompanied by histopathological damage of lung and brain tissue. Transcriptomic studies in hippocampal and lung tissue have demonstrated key neuroplasticity factors as well as cognitive deficits linked to lung injury, respectively. Mechanistically, the lung-brain axis plays a central role in PS-MPs-induced neurological damage, as demonstrated by pulmonary flora transplantation, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intervention, and cell co-culture experiments. Together, inhalation of PS-MPs reduces cognitive function by altering the composition of pulmonary flora to produce more LPS and promoting M1 polarization of microglia, which provides new insights into the mechanism of nerve damage caused by inhaled MPs and also sheds new light on the prevention of neurotoxicity of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
This study aims to develop biodegradable films by combining hemicellulose B (HB) with methylcellulose (MC) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) at two mass ratios, HB/MC 90/10 and HB/CMC 60/40. The effect of plasticizers, glycerol (GLY) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), on these films' mechanical and physicochemical properties was also investigated. Results showed that the film thickness increased with the addition of GLY and PEG. Moisture content was lower in plasticized films, possibly contributing to better storage. Plasticizers also induced more pronounced color changes, intensifying the lightness and yellowness. Physical attributes such as peel ability, foldability, and transparency were also noticeably improved, particularly in films with higher GLY and PEG concentrations. Additionally, plasticizers enhanced the mechanical properties more significantly in the HB/CMC films, as evidenced by improved tensile stress, elongation at break, elastic modulus, and toughness. However, oxygen and water vapor permeabilities, two of the most critical factors in food packaging, were reduced in the HB/MC films with plasticizers compared to the HB/CMC counterparts. The findings of this study bear significant implications for developing sustainable packaging solutions using hemicellulose B isolated from agricultural material processing waste. These biopolymer-based films, in conjunction with biobased plasticizers, such as glycerol biopolymer, can help curtail our reliance on conventional plastics and alleviate the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Abstract
This work reports the synthesis of Fe2O3 (FeO) microparticles using the Pechini method and their use to remove microplastics from tap water. The analysis by electronic microscopy revealed that the FeO microparticles (FeMicroPs) have a porous structure and are formed by interconnected grains with sizes of 80-120 nm. In addition, the X-ray diffraction analysis pointed out that the FeMicroPs are composed of γ- Fe2O3 and α- Fe2O3 phases. To remove the PS and PET microplastics with sizes of 0.1-3 μm from the tap water, FeO was added to the contaminated water and the mixture of FeO + microplastics was irradiated with focused NIR light (980 nm). This provoked the melting of the microplastics on the FeO surface. Later, the FeMicroPs with adsorbed microplastics was recovered with magnets. This last procedure permitted a high removal of microplastics from the tap water, and the adsorption capacity was 1000 mg/g. In the next step, the microplastics adsorbed on the FeO were irradiated with NIR light to induce its thermal decomposition by photothermal irradiation, this in turn, produced the elimination of the microplastics from the FeO surface and allowed its reuse to remove more microplastics from the tap water. The elimination of the microplastics from the FeO surface was confirmed by the FTIR and Raman techniques, since the vibrational peaks associated with the microplastics disappeared from the FeO surface after the photothermal irradiation. Thus, the results of this investigation suggest that the photothermal irradiation with NIR light not only facilitates the removal of microplastics from the tap water, but also, it was useful to degrade the microplastics definitively without producing more contamination. This technique could be used to remove microplastics in water treatment plants.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) refer to tiny plastic particles, typically smaller than 5 mm in size. Due to increased mask usage during COVID-19, improper disposal has led to masks entering the environment and releasing MPs into the surroundings. MPs can absorb environmental hazards and transfer them to humans and animals via the food chain, yet their impacts on food safety and human health are largely neglected. This review summarizes the release process of MPs from face masks, influencing factors, and impacts on food safety. Highlights are given to the prevalence of MPs and their combined toxicities with other environmental hazards. Control strategies are also explored. The release of MPs from face masks is affected by environmental factors like pH, UV light, temperature, ionic strength, and weathering. Due to the chemical active surface and large surface area, MPs can act as vectors for heavy metals, toxins, pesticides, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes, and foodborne pathogens through different mechanisms, such as electrostatic interaction, precipitation, and bioaccumulation. After being adsorbed by MPs, the toxicity of these environmental hazards, such as oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and disruption of metabolic energy levels, can be magnified. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on both the combined toxicities of MPs and environmental hazards, as well as their corresponding control strategies. Future research should prioritize understanding the interaction of MPs with other hazards in the food chain, their combined toxicity, and integrating MPs detection and degradation methods with other hazards.

Abstract
Globally, plastic pollution threatens human health, particularly affecting the hearts of offspring exposed to maternal environmental factors early in development. Few studies have specifically addressed sex-specific cardiac injury in offspring resulting from maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs). This study investigates the potential cardiac injury in offspring following maternal exposure to 1 mg/L PS-NPs. Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were exposed to PS-NPs until 3 weeks postpartum to establish a maternal exposure model. Heart tissues were collected and weighed, and the transcriptomes of the offspring hearts were sequenced and analyzed using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to assess the effects of PS-NPs on cardiac immune infiltration, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the offspring. PS-NPs caused a significant reduction in heart and body weight in female offspring compared to males. Additionally, PS-NPs induced sex-specific transcriptional reprogramming and metabolic disruptions in the offspring. PS-NPs also induced significant fibrosis, apoptosis, and increased CD68+ macrophage infiltration in offspring hearts. Notably, PS-NPs induced distinct cardiovascular diseases in the offspring. Fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis were significantly enriched in PS-NP-treated male offspring, while viral myocarditis was predominantly enriched in PS-NP-treated females. Our findings suggest that PS-NPs induce cardiotoxicity in offspring by disrupting metabolism, impairing immunity, and triggering fibrosis and apoptosis, with sex-specific differences. This study provides novel insights and a foundation for understanding sex-specific pharmacological differences and interventions in PS-NP-induced cardiovascular disease in offspring.

Abstract
Microplastics have recently emerged as a significant environmental concern due to their direct impacts on marine ecosystems. Vietnam, with its 3260-km coastline, faces an elevated risk of microplastic pollution due to various coastal anthropogenic activities. This study explored microplastic distribution in coastal surface seawater in the Southern Vietnam regions of Tien Giang, Can Gio, and Vung Tau. A total of 45 samples were collected in April, 2019, and the results showed that microplastics present at all sampling sites, with the abundance varying from 0.074 ± 0.109 pieces/m3 in Can Gio to 0.56 ± 0.35 pieces/m3 in Tien Giang. Estuarial sites showed higher abundances for all regions. Most microplastics were under 2.8 mm, fragmented, and primarily white or transparent. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and ethylene-vinyl acetate were the dominant polymers. This research indicates the urgency of further investigations to comprehensively understand the influence of wind patterns and other environmental factors on microplastic distribution.

Abstract
Nanoplastics (NPs) present a hidden risk to organisms and the environment via migration and enrichment. Detecting NPs remains challenging because of their small size, low ambient concentrations, and environmental variability. There is an urgency to exploit detection approaches that are more compatible with real-world environments. Herein, this study provides a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique for the in situ reductive generation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which is based on photoaging-induced modifications in NPs. The feasibility of generating Ag NPs on the surface of NPs was derived by exploring the photoaging mechanism, which was then utilized to SERS detection. The approach was applied successfully for the detection of polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) NPs with excellent sensitivity (e.g., as low as 1 × 10-6 mg/mL for PVC NPs, and an enhancement factor (EF) of up to 2.42 × 105 for small size PS NPs) and quantitative analytical capability (R2 > 0.95579). The method was successful in detecting NPs (PS NPs) in lake water. In addition, satisfactory recoveries (93.54-105.70 %, RSD < 12.5 %) were obtained by spiking tap water as well as lake water, indicating the applicability of the method to the actual environment. Therefore, the proposed approach offers more perspectives for testing real environmental NPs.

Abstract
Micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) pollution as a global environmental issue has received increasing interest in recent years. MNPs can enter and accumulate in the organisms including human beings mainly via ingestion and inhalation, and large amounts of foodborne MNPs have been frequently detected in human intestinal tracts and fecal samples. MNPs regulate the structure composition and metabolic functions of gut microbiota, which may cause the imbalance of intestinal ecosystems of the hosts and further mediate the occurrence and development of various diseases. In addition, a growing number of MNPs-degrading strains have been isolated from organismal feces. MNPs-degraders colonize the plastic surfaces and form the biofilms, and the long-chain polymers of MNPs can be biologically depolymerized into short chains. In general, MNPs are gradually degraded into small molecule substances (e.g., N2, CH4, H2O, and CO2) via a series of enzymatic catalyses, mainly including biodeterioration, fragmentation, assimilation, and mineralization. In this review, we outline the current progress of MNPs effects on gut microbiota and MNPs degradation by gut microbiota, which provide a certain theoretical basis for fully understanding the knowledge gaps on MNPs-related biological effect and biodegradation.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) occurrence in marine ecosystems is well known, but their accumulation in seaweeds and subsequent human exposure remain understudied. This research quantifies MPs presence in two commonly consumed seaweeds, kelp (Saccharina japonica) and nori (Pyropia yezoensis), in East Asia, revealing widespread contamination dominated by microfibers (<500 μm). Based on dietary patterns, human uptake through seaweed consumption was estimated and quantified. Notably, Chinese people consume an estimated 17,034 MPs/person/year through seaweed consumption, representing 13.1% of their total annual MPs intake. This seaweeds-derived exposure surpasses all other dietary sources, contributing up to 45.5% of overall MPs intake. The highest intake was in South Korea, followed by North Korea, China, and Japan. This research identifies seaweeds as a major, previously overlooked route of dietary MPs exposure. These findings are crucial for comprehensive risk assessments of seaweed consumption and the development of mitigation strategies, particularly for populations in East Asian countries.

Abstract
In order to investigate the adsorption behavior and mechanism of microplastics (MPs) on multiple coexisting pesticides in practical systems, as well as their hazardous changes upon binding, diethofencarb and pyrimethanil were selected to be studied with four MPs. The adsorption rate of both pesticides would be faster in the binary-component case, conforming to pseudo-second-order kinetics, with adsorption sites and chemical adsorption dominating. And the more hydrophobic the pesticide, the faster the adsorption rate and the higher the adsorption capacity. Diethofencarb belonged to monolayer adsorption, whereas pyrimethanil belonged to monomolecular combined with multilayer adsorption, depending on the size of pesticides. And the adsorption process was both competitive and synergistic when pesticides coexist. In addition, the adsorption process was a spontaneous heat absorption process. Electrostatic forces have little effect on adsorption, while the adsorption capacity can be altered by the adsorption sites and hydrophobicity of MPs. The salting-out effect also facilitated the adsorption process. As for changes in hazard, the bioluminescence of A. fischeri wasn't significantly inhibited, lacking of acute environmental toxicity. However, in vitro digestion experiments demonstrated a significant increase in bioavailability of diethofencarb and pyrimethanil in combination with MPs. These findings suggest the stronger adsorption behaviors and higher loading capacities between pesticides and MPs could lead more serious hazards to the human body, which deserves further attention.

Abstract
Polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) have sparked widespread concern about their possible health implications because of their abundance, pervasiveness in the environment and in our daily life. Multiple investigations have shown that a high dosage of PE MPs may adversely impact gastrointestinal health. In tandem with the rising prevalence of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in recent decades, global plastic manufacturing has risen to more than 300 million tons per year, resulting in a build-up of plastic by-products such as PE MPs in our surroundings. We have explored current advancements in the effect PE MPs on IBD in this review. Furthermore, we compared and summarized the detrimental roles of PE MPs in gut microbiota of different organisms viz., earthworms, super worm's larvae, yellow mealworms, brine shrimp, spring tails, tilapia, gilt-head bream, crucian carp, zebrafish, juvenile yellow perch, European sea bass, c57BL/6 mice and human. According to this review, PE MPs played a significant role in decreasing the diversity of gut microbiota of above-mentioned species which leads to the development of IBD and causes severe intestinal inflammation. Finally, we pinpoint significant scientific gaps, such as the movement of such hazardous PE MPs and the accompanying microbial ecosystems and propose prospective research directions.

Abstract
Sample preparation techniques enabling the separation and cleanup of nanoplastics removing other components present in complex sample matrices are scarce. Herein, micro-electromembrane extraction (μ-EME) has been explored for this purpose based on the extraction of nanoplastic particles across a free liquid membrane (FLM). The extraction unit is based on a perfluoroalkoxy tube sequentially filled with the acceptor solution (20 μL 5 mM phosphate buffer, pH 10.7), FLM (10 μL 1-pentanol), and donor solution (20 μL sample/standard solution). Sulfonated polystyrene beads (200 nm particle size) were selected as a model mimicking negatively charged nanoplastics. At 700 V, nanoplastics transferred from the donor solution into the FLM before moving across the FLM into the acceptor solution. Quantitative nanoplastic measurements after μ-EME were performed by injecting the acceptor solution into a capillary electrophoresis system with diode array detection. μ-EME allowed the rapid nanoplastic sample cleanup, requiring an extraction time of just 90 s and obtaining a nanoplastic transfer yield through the FLM of 60% with RSD values below 9%. The μ-EME technique enabled the efficient sample matrix cleanup of nanoplastics spiked in different tea matrices. Nanoplastic transfer yield through the FLM for black tea and flavored tea matrices were 56% and 47%, respectively, with complete sample matrix removal of UV-absorbing compounds.

Abstract
As emerging environmental pollutants, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) pose a serious threat to human health. Owing to the lack of feasible and reliable analytical methods, the separation and identification of MPs and NPs of different sizes remains a challenge. In this study, a hyphenated method involving filtration and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for the separation and identification of MPs and NPs is reported. This method not only avoids the loss of MPs and NPs during the transfer process but also provides an excellent SERS substrate. The SERS substrate was fabricated by electrochemically depositing silver particles onto the reduced graphene oxide layer coated on stainless steel mesh. Results show that polystyrene (PS) MPs and NPs are efficiently separated on the SERS substrate via vacuum filtration, resulting in high retention rates (74.26 % ± 1.58 % for 100 nm, 81.06 % ± 1.49 % for 500 nm, and 97.73 % ±0.11 % for 5 μm) and low limit of detection (LOD). The LOD values of 100 nm, 500 nm, and 5 μm PS are 8.89 × 10-5, 3.39 × 10-5, and 1.57 × 10-4 μg/mL, respectively. More importantly, a linear relationship for uniform quantification of 100 nm, 500 nm, 3 μm and 5 μm PS was established, and the relationship is Y = 225.61 lgX + 1076.36 with R2 = 0.980. The method was validated for the quantitative analysis of a mixture of 100 nm, 500 nm PS NPs, 3 μm and 5 μm PS MPs in a ratio of 1:1:1:1, which successfully approaches the evaluation of evaluated PS NPs in the range of 10-4-10 μg/mL with an LOD value of approximately 7.82 × 10-5 μg/mL. Moreover, this method successfully detected (3.87 ± 0.06) × 10-5 μg MPs and NPs per gram of oyster tissue.

Abstract
Nanoplastics (NPs), as emerging contaminants, have been shown to cause testicular disorders in mammals. However, whether paternal inheritance effects on offspring health are involved in NP-induced reproductive toxicity remains unclear. In this study, we developed a mouse model where male mice were administered 200 nm polyethylene nanoparticles (PE-NPs) at a concentration of 2 mg/L through daily gavage for 35 days to evaluate the intergenerational effects of PE-NPs in an exclusive male-lineage transmission paradigm. We observed that paternal exposure to PE-NPs significantly affected growth phenotypes and sex hormone levels and induced histological damage in the testicular tissue of both F0 and F1 generations. In addition, consistent changes in sperm count, motility, abnormalities, and gene expression related to endoplasmic reticulum stress, sex hormone synthesis, and spermatogenesis were observed across paternal generations. The upregulation of microRNA (miR)-1983 and the downregulation of miR-122-5p, miR-5100, and miR-6240 were observed in both F0 and F1 mice, which may have been influenced by reproductive signaling pathways, as indicated by the RNA sequencing of testis tissues and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction findings. Furthermore, alterations in the gut microbiota and subsequent Spearman correlation analysis revealed that an increased abundance of Desulfovibrio (C21_c20) and Ruminococcus (gnavus) and a decreased abundance of Allobaculum were positively associated with spermatogenic dysfunction. These findings were validated in a fecal microbiota transplantation trial. Our results demonstrate that changes in miRNAs and the gut microbiota caused by paternal exposure to PE-NPs mediated intergenerational effects, providing deeper insights into mechanisms underlying the impact of paternal inheritance.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) have become pervasive in marine ecosystems, exerting detrimental effects on marine life. The concurrent presence and interaction of MPs and heavy metals in aquatic environments could engender more insidious toxicological impacts. This study aimed to elucidate the potential impacts and underlying mechanisms of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), cadmium (Cd), and their combined stress (MPs-Cd) on sea cucumbers (Apostichopus japonicus). It focused on the growth, Cd bioaccumulation, oxidative stress responses, immunoenzymatic activities, and metabolic profiles, specifically considering PS-MPs sizes preferentially ingested by these organisms. The high-dose MPs (MH) treatment group exhibited an increase in cadmium bioavailability within the sea cucumbers. Exposure to PS-MPs or Cd triggered the activation of antioxidant defenses and immune responses. PS-MPs and Cd exhibited a synergistic effect on lysozyme (LZM) activity. A total of 149, 316, 211, 197, 215, 619, 434, and 602 differentially expressed metabolites were identified, distinguishing the low-dose MPs (ML), high-dose MPs (MH), low-dose Cd (LCd), low-dose MPs and low-dose Cd (MLLCd), high-dose MPs and low-dose Cd (MHLCd), high-dose Cd (HCd), low-dose MPs and high-dose Cd (MLHCd), high-dose MPs and high-dose Cd (MHHCd) groups, respectively. Metabolomic analyses revealed disruptions in lipid metabolism, nervous system function, signal transduction, and transport and catabolism pathways following exposure to PS-MPs, Cd, and MPs-Cd. Correlation analyses among key differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) underscored the interregulation among these metabolic pathways. These results offer new perspectives on the distinct and synergistic toxicological impacts of microplastics and cadmium on aquatic species, highlighting the complex interplay between environmental contaminants and their effects on marine life.

Abstract
Plastic particles, particularly micro- and nanoparticles, are emerging pollutants due to the ever-growing amount of plastics produced across a wide variety of sectors. When plastic particles enter a biological medium, they become surrounded by a corona, giving them their biological identity and determining their interactions in the living environment and their biological effects. Here, we studied the interactions of microstructured plastics with hemoglobin (Hb). Virgin polyethylene microparticles (PEMPs) and polypropylene microparticles (PPMPs) as well as heat- or irradiation-aged microparticles (ag-PEMPs and ag-PPMPs) were used to quantify Hb adsorption. Polypropylene filters (PP-filters) were used to measure the oxygenation of adsorbed Hb. Microstructured plastics were characterized using optical microscopy, SAXS, ATR-FTIR, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. Adsorption isotherms showed that the Hb corona thickness is larger on PPMPs than on PEMPs and Hb has a higher affinity for PPMPs than for PEMPs. Hb had a lower affinity for ag-PEMPs and ag-PPMPs, but they can be adsorbed in larger amounts. The presence of partial charges on the plastic surface and the oxidation rate of microplastics may explain these differences. Tonometry experiments using an original method, the diffuse reflection of light, showed that adsorbed Hb on PP-filters retains its cooperativity, but its affinity for O2 decreases significantly.

Abstract
The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of micro- and nanoplastic particles composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a significant contributor to plastic pollution, on human brain vascular pericytes. Specifically, we delved into their impact on mitochondrial functionality, oxidative stress, and the expression of genes associated with oxidative stress, ferroptosis and mitochondrial functions. Our findings demonstrate that the exposure of a monoculture of human brain vascular pericytes to PET particles in vitro at a concentration of 50 μg/ml for a duration of 3, 6 and 10 days did not elicit oxidative stress. Notably, we observed a reduction in various aspects of mitochondrial respiration, including maximal respiration, spare respiratory capacity, and ATP production in pericytes subjected to PET particles for 3 days, with a mitochondrial function recovery at 6 and 10 days. Furthermore, there were no statistically significant alterations in mitochondrial DNA copy number, or in the expression of genes linked to oxidative stress and ferroptosis, but an increase of the expression of the gene mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) was noted at 3 days exposure. These outcomes suggest that, at a concentration of 50 μg/ml, PET particles do not induce oxidative stress in human brain vascular pericytes. Instead, at 3 days exposure, PET exposure impairs mitochondrial functions, but this is recovered at 6-day exposure. This seems to indicate a potential mitochondrial hormesis response (mitohormesis) is incited, involving the gene TFAM. Further investigations are warranted to explore the stages of mitohormesis and the potential consequences of plastics on the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and intercellular interactions. This research contributes to our comprehension of the potential repercussions of nanoplastic pollution on human health and underscores the imperative need for ongoing examinations into the exposure to plastic particles.

Abstract
The issue of microplastic contamination in seafood is progressively recognised as a significant global issue. This study presents novel findings regarding the detection of microplastics within the eggs of commercially available fish intended for consumption by humans. Eggs of Ompok bimaculatus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Mystus vittatus and Anabas testudineus collected from the Periyar River, Kerala, India were subjected to analysis for the potential presence of microplastics. Out of the 91 fishes (containing eggs) examined, microplastics were observed in the eggs of 2 species, i.e., Ompok bimaculatus and Mystus vittatus. The polymers recorded were polyethylene and polypropylene. Fish eggs are commonly consumed by humans and are highly esteemed as a delectable food. Considering the widespread consumption of fish eggs as a delicacy among humans, there exists a potential route for human exposure to microplastics, which raises concerns regarding public health.

Abstract
Plastic contamination is widely recognized as a major environmental concern due to the entry of small plastic particles into the food chain, thereby posing potential hazards to human health. However, the current understanding of microplastic (MP; < 5 mm) particles in livestock, which serve as an important food source, is limited. This study aims to investigate the concentration and characteristics of MPs in edible tissues of cow and sheep, namely liver, meat, and tripe, obtained from butcher shops in five areas of Bushehr port, Iran. The mean concentration of MPs in different tissues of cow and sheep were 0.14 and 0.13 items/g, respectively. Among the examined tissues, cow meat exhibited the highest concentration of MPs, with a concentration of 0.19 items/g. Nylon and fiber were identified as the predominant polymer types and shapes of MPs found in cow and sheep tissues, respectively. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was observed in MP concentration across different tissues of cow and sheep. Significantly, this study highlights the elevated hazards associated with exposure to MPs through the consumption of edible cow and sheep tissues, particularly for children who consume meat. The results underscore the potential transfer of MPs from the environment to livestock bodies through their food, contamination during meat processing, and subsequent health hazards for consumers.

Abstract
Plastics are now omnipresent in our daily lives. The existence of microplastics (1 µm to 5 mm in length) and possibly even nanoplastics (<1 μm) has recently raised health concerns. In particular, nanoplastics are believed to be more toxic since their smaller size renders them much more amenable, compared to microplastics, to enter the human body. However, detecting nanoplastics imposes tremendous analytical challenges on both the nano-level sensitivity and the plastic-identifying specificity, leading to a knowledge gap in this mysterious nanoworld surrounding us. To address these challenges, we developed a hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging platform with an automated plastic identification algorithm that allows micro-nano plastic analysis at the single-particle level with high chemical specificity and throughput. We first validated the sensitivity enhancement of the narrow band of SRS to enable high-speed single nanoplastic detection below 100 nm. We then devised a data-driven spectral matching algorithm to address spectral identification challenges imposed by sensitive narrow-band hyperspectral imaging and achieve robust determination of common plastic polymers. With the established technique, we studied the micro-nano plastics from bottled water as a model system. We successfully detected and identified nanoplastics from major plastic types. Micro-nano plastics concentrations were estimated to be about 2.4 ± 1.3 × 105 particles per liter of bottled water, about 90% of which are nanoplastics. This is orders of magnitude more than the microplastic abundance reported previously in bottled water. High-throughput single-particle counting revealed extraordinary particle heterogeneity and nonorthogonality between plastic composition and morphologies; the resulting multidimensional profiling sheds light on the science of nanoplastics.

Abstract
Plastic pollution represents a pressing global environmental issue, with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) being ubiquitously found in both food and the environment. However, the investigation of NPs has been hampered by limited detection technologies, necessitating the development of advanced techniques. This study introduces a sol-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) approach for the swift detection of MPs and NPs in aqueous environment. By leveraging the aggregation effect between silver nanoparticles (Ag nanoparticles) and plastic particles, the plastic Raman signals is significantly enhanced, effectively lowering the detection limit. Utilizing Ag nanoparticles, plastic particles as small as 20 nm were detected in liquid samples, with a detection limit of 0.0005%. With the developed method, nanoplastic particles in seafood packaging samples were successfully tested, with concentration found to be at μg/L level. This method offers a rapid, economical, and convenient means of detecting and identifying MPs and NPs. The sensitivity of the method allows for capturing plastic signals within 2 min, making it valuable for aquatic environment contamination detection. SERS technology also holds promise for rapid plastic solution detection, potentially becoming a fast detection method for food safety.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs), an emerging pollutant in the environment and food, may adsorb other contaminants such as pesticide due to particles' properties. The adsorption behavior and their hazardous changes of four common types of MPs to thiram was investigated. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were fitted well using the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model respectively, indicating forces such as van der Waals forces dominate, and the maximum adsorption capacity at pH values of 6-7 also indicates that electrostatic forces play a smaller role. The adsorption thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic process. The decrease in the adsorption capacity as the concentration of MPs increases and more adsorption by aged MPs demonstrate that the adsorption process is related to the sites on the surface of MPs. Due to the influence of ionic strength, the adsorption capacity of MPs for thiram increases significantly when the adsorption process takes place in solutions with salinity or in orange and apple juices. The bioavailability of thiram adsorbed by PVC and PET increased significantly. This study highlights the strong role of MPs in food as carriers of pesticide residues in food systems and that the combined hazard should also be of concern.

Abstract
Human and animal exposure to microplastics (MPs) contained in food is inevitable because of their widespread existence in the environment. Nevertheless, MPs toxicity studies in ruminants often lack attention. Here, we assessed the cytotoxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) on goat mammary epithelial cells (GMECs). Compared to controls, PS MPs treatment significantly reduced cell viability, altered cell morphology and disrupted organelle integrity. Detection of membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS) suggested that PS MPs induced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Further transcriptome analysis also confirmed alterations in these pathways. In addition, several genes related to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis were significantly regulated in the transcriptional profile. Subsequent experiments confirmed that PS MPs induce ER stress via the PERK/eIF2α/CHOP pathway, accompanied by intracellular Ca2+ overload. Meanwhile, downstream activation of the Bax/Bcl-2 pathway and caspase cascade released apoptotic signals, which led to apoptosis in GMECs. Interestingly, the addition of PERK inhibitor (ISRIB) attenuated PS MPs-induced ER stress and apoptosis, which suggests that ER stress may exacerbate PS MPs-induced cytotoxicity. This work reveals the impact of MPs on mammalian cytotoxicity, enriches the mechanisms for the toxicity of MPs, and provides insight for further assessment of the risk of MPs in food.

Abstract
Plastics are strong, flexible, and inexpensive and hence desirable for packaging. However, as they biodegrade very slowly, their waste remains a global burden and pollution, warranting a search for safer alternatives. Towards this end, residual fibers from biowaste, such as spent coffee grounds (SCGs), stand out for creating biodegradable packaging materials. Herein, lignocellulosic fibers from SCG were extracted, and various amounts (0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 g) were solubilized using 68 % ZnCl2 and crosslinked with salt (CaCl2) amounts 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g and prepared biodegradable films. The films were characterized for their color, thickness, moisture content, tensile strength, elongation at break, water vapor permeability, transmittance of electromagnetic radiation, biodegradability, and antioxidant properties. The results reveal that the films possess the highest tensile strength of 26.8 MPa. The tensile strengths are positively correlated to salt and SCG extract amounts. The percentage of elongation decreased with an increase in the calcium ions but increased with SCG residue increment. The films biodegraded in the soil, and most lost >80 % of their initial weight in 45 and 100 days, respectively, at 30 % and 12 % soil moisture. Biodegradability and water vapor permeability decreased with an increase in salt content. Films also showed antioxidant properties and blocked UV and IR radiation significantly. Overall, this research involving green and recyclable chemicals in preparation of SCG residue fibers is a promising, economical, and sustainable route to produce strong biodegradable films to replace petrochemical plastics and thus is an attractive contribution to the circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution of soils and the widespread use of plastics have caused environmental problems worldwide. Nanoplastics (NPs) contaminants in water and soil environments can adsorb heavy metals, thereby affecting the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals. In this paper, the effect of co-exposure of polystyrene microspheres with 100 nm particle size and lead acetate (Pb) on the Eisenia fetida coelomocytes was investigated. The environmental concentration of NPs used was 0.01 mg/L and the concentration of Pb ranged from 0.01 to 1 mg/L, and the exposed cells were incubated at 298 k for 24 h. Our study demonstrated that exposure of cells to environmental relevant concentrations of NPs did not significantly affect the cytotoxicity of Pb exposure. It was shown that co-exposure induced cellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS, increased to 134.4 %) disrupted the antioxidant system of earthworm body cavity cells, activated superoxide dismutase and catalase (CAT), produced reduced glutathione, and inhibited glutathione-dependent enzyme (GST) activity (Reduced to 64 %). Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) is first enhanced against ROS due to the stress of NPs and Pb. When the antioxidant reserves of cells are exhausted, the antioxidant capacity will decrease. The level of malondialdehyde, a biomarker of eventual lipid peroxidation, increased to 231.7 %. At the molecular level, due to co-exposure to NPs and Pb, CAT was loosely structured and the secondary structure is misfolded, which was responsible for exacerbating oxidative damage in E. fetida coelomocytes. The findings of this study have significant implications for the toxicological interaction and future risk assessment of co-contamination of NPs and Pb in the environment.

Abstract
A variety of microplastics (MPs) have become ubiquitous environmental pollutants, leading to inevitable human contact and health impacts. Most previous research has explored the toxic effects of a single type of MPs exposure. However, the effects of co-exposure to both common types of MPs, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) MPs on mammals have not been explored. Here, adult mice were exposed to PS-PVC (1.0 µm PS and 2.0 µm PVC both at the concentration of 0.5 mg/day) for 60 days. The results showed that PS-PVC co-exposure-induced hepatotoxicity was evidenced by liver histopathological changes, the release of inflammatory cytokines, and the activation of oxidative stress. Moreover, the intestinal mucosal barrier was damaged after PS-PVC treatment. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing reported there was a marked shift in the gut microbial structure accompanied by decreased relative abundances of probiotics, such as Clostridium, Lachnospiraceae_UCG-006, Desulfovibrio, Clostridiales_unclassified and Ruminococcaceae_unclassified and increased the conditional pathogen abundances, such as Erysipelatoclostridium. Furthermore, the triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TCH) expression levels in the serum and liver were increased after PS-PVC co-exposure. Serum metabolomics analysis showed that there were 717 differential expression metabolites found in the positive- and negative-ion modes, including 476 up-regulated and 241 down-regulated, mainly enriched in butyrate metabolism, thiamine metabolism, and phenylacetate metabolism. In addition, remarked changes in the gut microbiota and serum metabolic profiles were closely related to hepatic and intestinal injuries after PS-PVC co-exposure. These results have provided new insights into the toxic effects of PS and PVC MPs co-exposure through the gut-liver axis and the health risks of PS and PVC MPs should be paid more attention to humans.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) are now not only emerging as pollutants in the environment, but their current state of contamination in food is also a cause for concern. It is necessary to focus how to control, reduce, and even remove MPs. In this study, a magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) material, Fe3O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Al), was synthesized and applied to simulate the magnetization and removal of four types of MPs. Fe3O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Al) was characterized by various means to demonstrate its successful synthesis as a core-shell nanomaterial. The conditions of the method were optimized by examining the effect of time, the mass ratio of material to MPs, temperature, and pH on the removal effect. The removal rates of four MPs were 54.10-94.17%, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Fe3O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Al) that can be adsorbed were 10511.45-44390.24 mg g-1. Notably, the material can effectively magnetize and remove MPs from liquid food containing alcohol with highest efficiency of 97.10 ± 1.21%. Potential adsorption mechanisms were analyzed using kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic models, and electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding were found to play a dominant role in the adsorption process. In addition, not only can Fe3O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Al) be reused up to five times to maintain high removal rates, but it can also be used in food systems. Therefore, Fe3O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Al) not only has the advantages of ease of use and stability, but also can efficiently and quickly magnetize and remove many common MPs in more complex matrices such as food.

Abstract
Microplastics pollution in environments has become a major concern and it has been proven to have adverse impacts on plants, so there is an urgent to find approaches to alleviate the detrimental effects of microplastics. In our study, we investigated the influence of polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) on the growth, photosynthesis, and oxidative defense system changes of ryegrass, as well as the behavior of MPs at roots. Then three types of nanomaterials were applied to alleviate the adverse impact of PSMPs on ryegrass, which were nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), carboxymethylcellulose-modified-nZVI (C-nZVI) and sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI), respectively. Our results suggested that PSMPs had significant toxicity to ryegrass, leading to decrease of shoot weight, shoot length and root length. Three nanomaterials regained the weight of ryegrass to a varying extent and made more PSMPs aggregate near roots. In addition, C-nZVI and S-nZVI facilitated the entrance of PSMPs into the root and promoted the chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents in leaves. Analysis of antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde content indicated that ryegrass coped well with the internalization of PSMPs, and all three types of nZVI could alleviate PSMPs-stress in ryegrass. This study elaborates the toxicity of MPs on plants and provides a novel insight into the fixing of MPs by plants and nanomaterials in environments, which needs to be further explored in future research.

Abstract
Although it is proved that humans ingest microplastics via food, and microplastics were found in human tissues, blood and feces, there needs to be more data on the properties and health-related effects of plastic particles that interact with food and undergo digestion. This study aimed to examine the impact of a real food matrix, milk, on the behavior and gastrointestinal fate of polystyrene microparticles (PSMP). In the presence of the food matrix, the net negative ζ-potential values of PSMP (diameter size of 1.823 μm) decreased significantly due to the formation of the corona, mostly consisting of α and β-casein fragments. Protein corona profiles and morphologies of particles incubated with whole and skim milk were found to be similar, and the protein profiles were completely altered after in vitro digestion simulation. In vitro and in vivo toxicity studies showed that neither bare PSMP nor food-interacted PSMP pose acute toxicity on the Caco-2 cell line and zebrafish embryos under the chosen experimental conditions. In summary, these results may contribute to a better understanding of changes that microplastics undergo in foods. Further studies on repeated exposure or chronic toxicity are needed to fully reveal the effect of food matrix on microplastic toxicity.

Abstract
Domestic laundry wastewater discharge contributes significantly to the presence of microfiber and surfactant pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, which have detrimental and toxic effects on humans and the environment. Investigating the efficacy of powdered activated carbon (PAC) in removing micro-/nanofibers with or without surfactant from household laundry effluent is the purpose of the current research. To simulate real-world scenarios, PAC adsorption kinetics and isotherms in laundry effluents under controlled conditions were studied. These studies showed that the kinetics obeyed a pseudo-second-order process and the isotherms varied between Langmuir and Freundlich models depending on the water types. In the results of experiments using distilled water and tap water, it was observed that the adsorption capacity was higher in tap water. When the adsorption of 0.1 μm filtered synthetic garments, detergent, and tap water was compared with the adsorption of the raw sample, it was observed that the adsorption capacity of the 0.1 μm filtered version was higher. Even though this study is preliminary, the results indicate that PAC has the capacity to serve as a viable approach for mitigating micro-/nanoplastic and surfactant contamination from laundry wastewater, thereby offering valuable guidance for advancing eco-friendly laundry techniques.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people used personal protective equipment (PPE) to lessen the spread of the virus. The release of microplastics (MPs) from discarded PPE is a new threat to the long-term health of the environment and poses challenges that are not yet clear. PPE-derived MPs have been found in multi-environmental compartments, e.g., water, sediments, air, and soil across the Bay of Bengal (BoB). As COVID-19 spreads, healthcare facilities use more plastic PPE, polluting aquatic ecosystems. Excessive PPE use releases MPs into the ecosystem, which aquatic organisms ingest, distressing the food chain and possibly causing ongoing health problems in humans. Thus, post-COVID-19 sustainability depends on proper intervention strategies for PPE waste, which have received scholarly interest. Although many studies have investigated PPE-induced MPs pollution in the BoB countries (e.g., India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar), the ecotoxicity impacts, intervention strategies, and future challenges of PPE-derived waste have largely gone unnoticed. Our study presents a critical literature review covering the ecotoxicity impacts, intervention strategies, and future challenges across the BoB countries (e.g., India (162,034.45 tons), Bangladesh (67,996 tons), Sri Lanka (35,707.95 tons), and Myanmar (22,593.5 tons). The ecotoxicity impacts of PPE-derived MPs on human health and other environmental compartments are critically addressed. The review's findings infer a gap in the 5R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Redesign, and Restructure) Strategy's implementation in the BoB coastal regions, hindering the achievement of UN SDG-12. Despite widespread research advancements in the BoB, many questions about PPE-derived MPs pollution from the perspective of the COVID-19 era still need to be answered. In response to the post-COVID-19 environmental remediation concerns, this study highlights the present research gaps and suggests new research directions considering the current MPs' research advancements on COVID-related PPE waste. Finally, the review suggests a framework for proper intervention strategies for reducing and monitoring PPE-derived MPs pollution in the BoB countries.

Abstract
The unsustainable manufacturing, utilization and inadequate handling of plastics have led to a surge in global plastic pollution. In recent times, there has been increasing concern about the plausible hazards associated with exposure to micro/nanoplastics (M/NPs). As aquatic systems are considered to be the likely sink for M/NPs, it is crucial to comprehend their environmental behavior. The bioavailability, toxicity and fate of M/NPs in the environment are predominantly dictated by their surface characteristics. In the aquatic environment, M/NPs are prone to be internalized by aquatic organisms. This may facilitate their interaction with a diverse array of biomolecules within the organism, resulting in the formation of a biocorona (BC). The development of BC causes modifications in the physicochemical attributes of the M/NPs including changes to their size, stability, surface charge and other properties. This review details the concept of BC formation and its underlying mechanism. It provides insight on the analytical techniques employed for characterizing BC formation and addresses the associated challenges. Further, the eco-toxicological implications of M/NPs and the role of BC in modifying their potential toxicity on aquatic organisms is specified. The impact of BC formation on the fate and transport of M/NPs is discussed. A concise outlook on the future perspectives is also presented.

Abstract
According to the trade association PlasticEurope, global plastics production increased to 390.7 million tons in 2021. Unfortunately, the majority of produced plastics eventually end up as waste in the ocean or on land. Since synthetic plastics are not fully biodegradable, they tend to persist in natural environments and transform into micro- and nanoplastic particles due to fragmentation. The presence of nanoplastics in air, water, and food causes ecotoxicological issues and leads to human exposure. One of the main concerns is their genotoxic potential. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the internalization rates, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in vitro. The uptake of PS-NPs was confirmed with flow cytometry light scattering analysis. None of the tested nanoparticle concentrations had a cytotoxic effect on human PBMCs, as evaluated by a dual ethidium bromide/acridine orange staining technique. However, an alkaline comet assay results revealed a significant increase in the levels of primary DNA damage after 24 h of exposure to PS-NPs in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, all tested PS-NPs concentrations induced a significant amount of micronucleated cells, as well. The results of this study revealed the genotoxic potential of commercially manufactured polystyrene nanoparticles and highlighted the need for more studies with naturally occurring plastic NPs.

Abstract
Anthropogenic microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous pollutants found in aquatic, food, soil and air environments. Recently, drinking water for human consumption has been considered a significant pathway for ingestion of such plastic pollutants. Most of the analytical methods developed for detection and identification of MPs have been established for particles with sizes > 10 μm, but new analytical approaches are required to identify NPs below 1 μm. This review aims to evaluate the most recent information on the release of MPs and NPs in water sources intended for human consumption, specifically tap water and commercial bottled water. The potential effects on human health of dermal exposure, inhalation, and ingestion of these particles were examined. Emerging technologies used to remove MPs and/or NPs from drinking water sources and their advantages and limitations were also assessed. The main findings showed that the MPs with sizes > 10 μm were completely removed from drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). The smallest NP identified using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS) had a diameter of 58 nm. Contamination with MPs/NPs can occur during the distribution of tap water to consumers, as well as when opening and closing screw caps of bottled water or when using recycled plastic or glass bottles for drinking water. In conclusion, this comprehensive study emphasizes the importance of a unified approach to detect MPs and NPs in drinking water, as well as raising the awareness of regulators, policymakers and the public about the impact of these pollutants, which pose a human health risk.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) occurrence in farmed aquatic organisms has already been the prime priority of researchers due to the food security concerns for human consumption. A number of commercially important aquaculture systems have already been investigated for MPs pollution but the mud crab (Scylla sp.) aquaculture system has not been investigated yet even though it is a highly demanded commercial species globally. This study reported the MPs pollution in the mud crab (Scylla sp.) aquaculture system for the first time. Three different stations of the selected aquafarm were sampled for water and sediment samples and MPs particles in the samples were isolated by the gravimetric analysis (0.9% w/v NaCl solution). MP abundance was visualized under a microscope along with their size, shape, and color. A subset of the isolated MPs was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for the surface and chemical characterization respectively. The average MPs concentration was 47.5 ± 11.875 particles/g in sediment and 127.92 ± 14.99 particles/100 L in the water sample. Fibrous-shaped (72.17%) and transparent-colored (59.37%) MPs were dominant in all the collected samples. However, smaller MPs (>0.05-0.5 mm) were more common in the water samples (47.69%) and the larger (>1-5 mm) MPs were in the sediment samples (47.83%). SEM analysis found cracks and roughness on the surface of the MPs and nylon, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene MPs were identified by FTIR analysis. PLI value showed hazard level I in water and level II in sediment. The existence of deleterious MPs particles in the mud crab aquaculture system was well evident. The other commercial mud crab aquafarms must therefore be thoroughly investigated in order to include farmed mud crabs as an environmentally vulnerable food security concern.

Abstract
Nanoplastics (NPLs) became ubiquitous in the environment, from the air we breathe to the food we eat. One of the main concerns about the NPLs risks is their role as carrier of other environmental contaminants, potentially increasing their uptake, bioaccumulation and toxicity to the organisms. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to understand how the presence of polystyrene NPLs (∅ 44 nm) will influence the toxicity (synergism, additivity or antagonism) of the antihistamine diphenhydramine (DPH), towards zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos, when in dual mixtures. After 96 hours (h) exposure, at the organismal level, NPLs (0.015 or 1.5 mg/L) + DPH (10 mg/L) induced embryo mortality (90%) and malformations (100%) and decreased hatching (80%) and heartbeat rates (60%). After 120 h exposure, NPLs (0.015 or 1.5 mg/L) + DPH (0.01 mg/L) decreased larvae swimming distance (30-40%). At the biochemical level, increased glutathione S-transferases (55-122%) and cholinesterase (182-343%) activities were found after 96 h exposure to NPLs (0.015 or 1.5 mg/L) + DPH (0.01 mg/L). However, catalase (CAT) activity remained similar to the control group in the mixtures, inhibiting the effects detected after the exposure to 1.5 mg/L NPLs alone (increased 230% of CAT activity). In general, the effects of dual combination - NPLs + DPH (even at concentrations as low as 10 μg/L of DPH) - were more harmful than the correspondent individual exposures, showing the synergistic interactions of the dual mixture and answering to the main question of this work. The obtained results, namely the altered toxicity patterns of NPLs + DPH compared with the individual exposures, show the importance of an environmental risk assessment considering NPLs as a co-contaminant due to the potential NPLs role as vector for other contaminants.

Abstract
Due to the rising usage of plastics, plastic debris are present throughout marine ecosystems and detrimentally affects marine biota. Additionally, plastics likely result in elusive toxicity effects due to addition of plasticizers. The aim of the present study was to reveal the potential effects and mechanism of microplastics (MPs), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and copollution of MPs and DEHP (MPs-DEHP) on Peneaus vannamei (P. vannamei) juveniles regarding oxidative stress, transcriptomics and metabolomics. MPs, DEHP and MPs-DEHP significantly induced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT); MPs and DEHP have an antagonistic effect for malondialdehyde (MDA); suggesting that disorders of the antioxidant defence systems. 13, 133 and 58 differentially expressed genes and 21, 82 and 39 differentially expressed metabolites were responsible for the distinction of MPs, DEHP and MPs-DEHP groups, respectively. The combination of transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses showed that MPs, DEHP and MPs-DEHP exposure disturbed amino acid and lipid metabolism, and further induced inflammatory responses and dysfunction of purine metabolism. Furthermore, the presence of MPs might alleviate the biotoxicity of DEHP in P. vannamei. These findings provide new insights into the single and combined toxicological effects of MPs and additives for marine biota.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) films have poor mechanical property, low water-resistance and limited antimicrobial activity, which hinder their application in food preservation industry. Cinnamaldehyde-tannic acid-zinc acetate nanoparticles (CTZA NPs) assembled from edible medicinal plant extracts were successfully incorporated into CS films to solve these issues. The tensile strength and water contact angle of the composite films increased about 5.25-fold and 17.55°. The addition of CTZA NPs reduced the water sensitivity of CS films, which could undergo appreciable stretching in water without breaking. Furthermore, CTZA NPs significantly enhanced the UV adsorption, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties of the films, while reduced their water vapor permeability. Moreover, it was possible to print inks onto the films because the presence of the hydrophobic CTZA NPs facilitated the deposition of carbon powder onto their surfaces. The films with great antibacterial and antioxidant activities can be applied for food packaging application.

Abstract
Ingesting microplastics (MPs) from plastic tableware is an important source of health risk to human bodies. However, the comprehensive information of MPs released from disposable tableware has not been explored. Herein, a new visual quantification method for polystyrene MPs is proposed with carbon nitride fluorescent polymers staining, which can overcome the disadvantages of high signal background and photobleaching derived from organic dyes staining. Combining with fluorescence microscope and ImageJ software, the quantity, shape, and size distribution of MPs carried by the brand-new disposable polystyrene tableware (DPT) samples before usage and released from the clean DPT samples in different simulated usage scenes were studied. The brand-new DPT samples were found to carry a large number of MPs particles and the clean DPT samples could release MPs during usage. Fiber and fragment are the main morphology of the detected MPs and fiber accounts for 45-52 %. The particles with size <50 μm are the majority of the detected MPs and the distribution fraction of MPs particles is gradually decreased with the raising of particle size within 50 μm. The released MPs particles are increased with the raising of contact time and temperature, and greatly boosted for the DPT samples with cracks. The DPT samples are more like to release MPs in weak acidic condition (pH 4.0) than in weak alkaline (pH 8.3) and neutral (pH 7.0) conditions. The obtained results help to assess the food safety of tack-out food and the health risk of MPs exposure to human.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution is causing a stir globally due to its persistent and ubiquitous nature. The scientific collaboration is diligently working on improved, effective, sustainable, and cleaner measures to control the nano/microplastic load in the environment especially wrecking the aquatic habitat. This chapter discusses the challenges encountered in nano/microplastic control and improved technologies like density separation, continuous flow centrifugation, oil extraction protocol, electrostatic separation to extract and quantify the same. Although it is still in the early stages of research, biobased control measures, like meal worms and microbes to degrade microplastics in the environment have been proven effective. Besides the control measures, practical alternatives to microplastics can be developed like core-shell powder, mineral powder, and biobased food packaging systems like edible films and coatings developed using various nanotechnological tools. Lastly, the existing and ideal stage of global regulations is compared, and key research areas are pinpointed. This holistic coverage would enable manufacturers and consumers to reconsider their production and purchase decisions for sustainable development goals.

Abstract
As microplastic pollution has become an emerging environmental issue of global concern, microplastics in aquaculture have become a research hotspot. For environmental safety, economic efficiency and food safety considerations, a comprehensive understanding of microplastic pollution in aquaculture is necessary. This review outlines an overview of sources and effects of microplastics in aquaculture. External environmental inputs and aquaculture processes are sources of microplastics in aquaculture. Microplastics may release harmful additives and adsorb pollutants in aquaculture environment, cause deterioration of aquaculture environment, as well as cause toxicological effects, affect the behavior, growth and reproduction of aquaculture products, ultimately reducing the economic benefits of aquaculture. Microplastics entering the human body through aquaculture products also pose potential health risks at multiple levels. Microplastic pollution removal strategies used in aquaculture in various countries are also reviewed. Ecological interception and purification are considered to be effective methods. In addition, strengthening aquaculture management and improving fishing gear and packaging are also currently feasible solutions. As proactive measures, new portable microplastic monitoring system and remote sensing technology are considered to have broad application prospects. And it was encouraged to comprehensively strengthen the supervision of microplastic pollution in aquaculture through talent exchange and strengthening the construction of laws and regulations.

Abstract
Plastic take-out food containers may release microplastics (MPs) into food and pose a potential risk to food safety and human health. Here, after being subjected to hot water treatment, MPs released from three types of plastic food containers (polypropylene, PP; polyethylene, PE; expanded polystyrene, EPS) were identified by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the size of released MPs ranged from 0.8-38 μm and over 96% MPs were smaller than 10 μm. Various MPs concentrations were found from the three types of containers, that is, 1.90 × 104, 1.01 × 105, and 2.82 × 106 particles/L on average from PP, PE, and EPS, respectively. Moreover, based on thermal and morphology analysis, we discovered that both relaxations of the polymer chains in the rubbery state and defects caused by processing techniques might contribute to the release of MPs. Thus, such release can be reduced by increasing the thermal stability of the materials and mitigating the defects generated during production.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) have raised health concerns in public for its potential reproductive toxicity. In this study, we subjected the Kunming mice to 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 mg/day polystyrene MPs (10 μm, PS-MPs) for 35 days, aiming to investigate the relevant male reproductive toxicity and latent molecular mechanism. The results showed the decreased sperm counts and motility, while the elevated sperm abnormality in PS-MPs-exposed mice. Testicular H&E staining displayed the vacuolization, atrophy, and even shedding of germ cells in seminiferous tubule. And the testosterone content in serum also decreased with PS-MPs treatment. Moreover, molecular analysis indicated that PS-MPs upregulated the expression trait factors for ERS (e.g., immunoglobulin-binding protein [BIP], inositol-requiring protein 1α [IRE1α], X-box-binding protein 1 splicing [XBP1s], Jun kinase [JNK], and the transcription of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) homologous protein [CHOP]) and downstream apoptotic modulator (e.g., Caspase-12, -9, and -3) in the testis. The steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), the testosterone synthetic initiator, was also downregulated. With the supplementation of ERS inhibitor, the MPs-induced testicular damage and decreased testosterone were improved to almost normal level. Overall, this study suggested that PS-MPs generate reproductive toxicity possibly via activating ERS and apoptosis signaling pathway.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are widely detected in food and the human environment. More studies have begun to pay attention to the influence of MPs and NPs on genetics; in particular, exposure of paternal generation to MPs and NPs on epigenetic inheritance and the offspring of animal models have attracted considerable interest. In this Viewpoint, we mainly discuss the suggestion that reproductive genetic changes in the male parent have the potential to be transferred to the offspring and illustrate how MPs and NPs in the father tissues are distributed in later generations. We provide a systematic understanding of the potential health hazards of paternal exposure to MPs and NPs to subsequent generations and put forth recommendations about the epigenetic effects for future research on public health and food safety.

Abstract
Microplastics and Nanoplastics (MNPLs) pollution has been recognized as the important environmental pollution caused by human activities in addition to global warming, ozone layer depletion and ocean acidification. Most of the current studies have focused on the toxic effects caused by plastics and have not actively investigated the mechanisms causing cell death, especially at the subcellular level. The main content of this paper focuses on two aspects, one is a review of the current status of MNPLs contamination and recent advances in toxicological studies, which highlights the possible concentration levels of MNPLs in the environment and the internal exposure of humans. It is also proposed to pay attention to the compound toxicity of MNPLs as carriers of other environmental pollutants and pathogenic factors. Secondly, subcellular toxicity is discussed and the modes of entry and intracellular distribution of smaller-size MNPLs are analyzed, with particular emphasis on the importance of organelle damage to elucidate the mechanism of toxicity. Importantly, MNPLs are a new type of environmental pollutant and researchers need to focus not only on their toxicity, but also work with governments to develop measures to reduce plastic emissions, optimize degradation and control plastic aggression against organisms, especially humans, from multiple perspectives.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is becoming increasingly prevalent with the improvement of people's living standards in recent years, especially in urban areas. The emerging environmental contaminant is a newly-proposed concept in the progress of industrialization and modernization, referring to synthetic chemicals that were not noticed or researched before, which may lead to many chronic diseases, including IBD. The emerging contaminants mainly include microplastics, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, chemical herbicides, heavy metals, and persisting organic pollutants. In this review, we summarize the adverse health effect of these emerging contaminants on humans and their relationships with IBD. Therefore, we can better understand the impact of these new emerging contaminants on IBD, minimize their exposures, and lower the future incidence of IBD.

Abstract
While the exact health risks associated with nanoplastics are currently the focus of intense research, there is no doubt that humans are exposed to nanoplastics and that food could be a major source of exposure. Nanoplastics are released from plastic materials and articles used during food production, processing, storage, preparation, and serving. They are also likely to enter the food chain via contaminated water, air, and soil. However, very limited exposure data for risk assessment exists so far due to the lack of suitable analytical methods. Nanoplastic detection in food poses a great analytical challenge due to the complexity of plastics and food matrices as well as the small size and expectedly low concentration of the plastic particles. Multidetector field flow fractionation has emerged as a valuable analytical technique for nanoparticle separation over the last decades, and the first studies using the technique for analyzing nanoplastics in complex matrices are emerging. In combination with online detectors and offline analysis, multidetector field flow fractionation is a powerful platform for advanced characterization of nanoplastics in food by reducing sample complexity, which otherwise hampers the full potential of most analytical techniques. The focus of this article is to present the current state of the art of multidetector field flow fractionation for nanoplastic analysis and to discuss future trends and needs aiming at the analysis of nanoplastics in food.

Abstract
Crayfish is one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. The potential risks of crayfish consumption caused by environmental microplastic pollution have attracted much attention. In this study, a total of 72 crayfish samples were exposed to the microplastic concentrations of 1 mg/L, 3 mg/L, and 9 mg/L for 7, 14, and 28 days, and microplastic contamination levels in crayfish were then explored by laser confocal micro-Raman (LCM-Raman) imaging and scanning electron microscope (SEM). LCM-Raman imaging showed better performance in microplastics identification. Besides, the average percentage of the contaminated area in visualized LCM-Raman images was used to quantitatively assess contamination levels. Following 28 days of exposure to 9 mg/L microplastics, microplastic accumulation reached about 13,000 particles per crayfish. The results confirmed that LCM-Raman imaging combined with image processing technology could be used to construct a high-performance analytical strategy for the assessment of microplastic contamination in crayfish.

Abstract
In modern society, plastics also play an indispensable role in people's lives due to their various excellent properties. However, when these plastic products are discarded after being used, after being subjected to external influences, they will continue to be worn, damaged and degraded into micro- and nano-scale plastics, which are microplastics and nanoplastics (M/NPs). Although people's attention has been paid to M/NPs at present, the focus is still mainly on the detection and hazard of M/NPs, and how to remove M/NPs is relatively less popular. This review was written in order to draw the attention of more researchers to remove M/NPs. This review first briefly introduces the research background of M/NPs, and also shows the main analytical methods currently used for qualitative and quantitative M/NPs. Then, most of the current literature on the removal of M/NPs was collected, and they were classified, summarized, and introduced according to the classification of physical, physicochemical, and biological methods. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods are summarized, and they are also compared, which can help more researchers choose the appropriate method for research. In addition, the application scenarios of these methods are briefly introduced. Finally, some future research directions are proposed for the current research status of M/NPs removal. It is hoped that this will further promote the development on the method of removing M/NPs.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs), the emerging environmental pollutants, have attracted global attention due to the potential public health challenge and ecological security risk. Recent studies suggested liver as a vulnerable organ to MPs exposure, evidenced by abnormal hepatic lipid metabolism upon MPs intake in multiple animal species. However, the specific changes of lipid metabolism in mammalian livers, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain to be elucidated. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to normal drinking water or drinking water containing 100 μg L-1 or 1000 μg L-1 polystyrene (PS) MPs for 8 weeks. MPs exposure exerted no significant effect on body weight, serum triglyceride or total cholesteryl esters. However, mice showed impaired glucose tolerance and hepatic lipid deposition in response to high-dose MPs administration. Further lipidomic analysis showed significant alteration in hepatic lipid species particularly with free fatty acids (FFAs) and triacylglycerols (TAGs) in mice exposed to MPs. Meanwhile, the liver transcriptional profile indicated MPs exposure-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in pathways of lipid metabolism and unfolded protein response. Furthermore, most altered lipid species were significantly correlated with DEGs enriched in lipid metabolic signaling. These findings provide lipidomic and transcriptional signatures of liver in response to MPs exposure, which will shed light on further understanding of the metabolic toxicity of MPs.
