Nickel-Based Electrocatalysts for Energy-Related Applications: Oxygen Reduction, Oxygen Evolution, and Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Crystalline-dependent surface reconstruction at low applied potential region for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Alkaline water electrolysis is apreferred technology for large-scale green hydrogen production. For most active transition metal-based catalysts during anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the atomic structure of the anodic catalysts' surface often undergoes reconstruction to optimize the reaction path and enhance their catalytic activity. The design and maintenance of highly active sites during this reconstruction process remain critical and challenging for most OER catalysts. In this study, we explored the effects of crystal structures in pre-catalysts on surface reconstruction at low applied potential. Through experimental observation and theoretical calculation, we found out that catalysts with specific crystal structures exhibit superior surface remodeling ability, which enables them to better adapt to the conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction and achieve efficient catalysis. The discharge process enables the formation of abundant phosphorus vacancies on the surface, which in turn affects the efficiency of the entire oxygen evolution reaction. The optimized crystal structure of the catalyst results in an increase as high as 58.5 mA/cm2 for Ni5P4, which is twice as high as that observed for Ni2P. These results provide essential theoretical foundations and technical guidance for designing more efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions.

NiCo2O4 Nanowires Immobilized on Nitrogen-Doped Ti3C2Tx for High-Performance Wearable Magnesium-Air Batteries

Flexible magnesium (Mg)-air batteries provide an ideal platform for developing efficient energy-storage devices toward wearable electronics and bio-integrated power sources. However, high-capacity bio-adaptable Mg-air batteries still face the challenges in low discharge potential and inefficient oxygen electrodes, with poor kinetics property toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, spinel nickel cobalt oxides (NiCo2O4) nanowires immobilized on nitrogen-doped Ti3C2Tx (NiCo2O4/N-Ti3C2Tx) are reported via surface chemical-bonded effect as oxygen electrodes, wherein surface-doped pyridinic-N-C and Co-pyridinic-N moieties accounted for efficient ORR owing to increased interlayer spacing and changed surrounding environment around Co metals in NiCo2O4. Importantly, in polyethylene glycol (PVA)-NaCl neutral gel electrolytes, the NiCo2O4/N-Ti3C2Tx-assembled quasi-solid wearable Mg-air batteries delivered high open-circuit potential of 1.5 V, good flexibility under various bent angles, high power density of 9.8 mW cm-2, and stable discharge duration to 12 h without obvious voltage drop at 5 mA cm-2, which can power a blue flexible light-emitting diode (LED) array and red smart rollable wearable device. The present study stimulates studies to investigate Mg-air batteries involving human-body adaptable neutral electrolytes, which will facilitate the application of Mg-air batteries in portable, flexible, and wearable power sources for electronic devices.

Recent Advancements on Spin Engineering Strategies for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a widely employed half-electrode reaction in oxygen electrochemistry, in applications such as hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, ammonia synthesis, and electrocatalytic hydrogenation. Unfortunately, its slow kinetics limits the commercialization of such applications. It is therefore highly imperative to develop highly robust electrocatalysts with high activity, long-term durability, and low noble-metal contents. Previously intensive efforts have been made to introduce the advancements on developing non-precious transition metal electrocatalysts and their OER mechanisms. Electronic structure tuning is one of the most effective and interesting ways to boost OER activity and spin angular momentum is an intrinsic property of the electron. Therefore, modulation on the spin states and the magnetic properties of the electrocatalyst enables the changes on energy associated with interacting electron clouds with radical absorbance, affecting the OER activity and stability. Given that few review efforts have been made on this topic, in this review, the-state-of-the-art research progress on spin-dependent effects in OER will be briefed. Spin engineering strategies, such as strain, crystal surface engineering, crystal doping, etc., will be introduced. The related mechanism for spin manipulation to boost OER activity will also be discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of spin catalysis are presented. This review aims to highlight the significance of spin engineering in breaking the bottleneck of electrocatalysis and promoting the practical application of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Novel Water-Splitting Electrolyzer Design Incorporating a Gas Diffusion Electrode and a Gel Membrane for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Production

Advancements in cost-effective, high-performance alkaline water-splitting systems are crucial for the hydrogen industry. While the significance of electrode material design has been widely acknowledged, the practical implementation of these advancements remains challenging. In this study, we focused on the holistic design of the electrolysis system and successfully developed a novel alkaline water-splitting electrolyzer. The unique configuration of our electrolyzer allows the designed NiFe-LDH/carbon cloth gas diffusion anode to interact solely with the PVA-based gel membrane and air, enabling the direct discharge of oxygen into the gas phase. This innovative feature accelerates anode bubble overflow, reduces gas interference, and decreases the system impedance by minimizing electrode spacing. As a result, by utilizing the NiFeSn-alloy/nickel mesh cathode, our electrolyzer achieves a high current density of 308 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 2.0 V and demonstrates exceptional stability over 1000 h.

Graphene-supported MN4 single-atom catalysts for multifunctional electrocatalysis enabled by axial Fe tetramer coordination

Multifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucial for development of the key electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, for which single-atom catalyst (SAC) has present great promises. Very recently, some experimental works showed that structurally well-defined ultra-small transition-metal clusters (such as Fe and Co tetramers, denoted as Fe4 and Co4, respectively), can efficiently modulate the catalytic behavior of SACs by axial coordination. Herein, taking the graphene-supported MN4 SACs as representatives, we theoretically explored the feasibility of realizing multifunctional SACs for ORR, OER and HER by this novel axial coordination engineering. Through extensive first-principles calculations, from 23 candidates, IrN4 decorated with Fe4 (IrN4/Fe4) is identified as the promising trifunctional catalyst with the theoretical overpotential of 0.43, 0.51 and 0.30 V for OER, ORR and HER, respectively. RhN4/Fe4 and CoN4/Fe4 are recognized as potential OER and ORR bifunctional catalysts. In addition, NiN4/Fe4 exhibits the best ORR activity with an overpotential of 0.30 V, far superior to the pristine NiN4 SAC (0.88 V). Electronic structure analyses reveal that the significantly enhanced ORR/OER activity can be ascribed to the orbital and charge redistribution of Ni/Ir active center, resulting from its electronic interaction with Fe4 cluster. This work could stimulate and guide the rational design of graphene-based multifunctional SACs realized by axial coordination of small TM clusters, and provide insights into the modulation mechanism.

Enhanced Long-Term Stability of Crystalline Nickel-Boride (Ni23B6) Electrocatalyst by Encapsulation with Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Nickel boride catalysts show great potential as low-cost and efficient alternatives to noble-metal catalysts in acidic media; however, synthesizing and isolating a specific phase and composition of nickel boride is nontrivial, and issues persist in their long-term stability as electrocatalysts. Here, a single-crystal nickel boride, Ni23B6, is reported which exhibits high electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an acidic solution, and that its poor long-term stability can be overcome via encapsulation by single-crystal trilayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) film. Interestingly, hBN-covered Ni23B6 on a Ni substrate shows an identical overpotential of 52 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 to that of bare Ni23B6. This phenomenon indicates that the single-crystalline hBN layer is catalytically transparent and does not obstruct HER activation. The hBN/Ni23B6/Ni has remarkable long-term stability with negligible changes to its polarization curves for 2000 cycles, whereas the Ni23B6/Ni shows significant degradation after 650 cycles. Furthermore, chronoamperometric measurements indicate that stability is preserved for >20 h. Long-term stability tests also reveal that the surface morphology and chemical structure of the hBN/Ni23B6/Ni electrode remain preserved. This work provides a model for the practical design of robust and durable electrochemical catalysts through the use of hBN encapsulation.

Recent Advances in Understanding of the Singlet Oxygen in Energy Storage and Conversion

Singlet oxygen (term symbol 1Δg, hereafter 1O2), a reactive oxygen species, has recently attracted increasing interest in the field of rechargeable batteries and electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. These sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies are of vital significance to replace fossil fuels and promote carbon neutrality and finally tackle the energy crisis and climate change. Herein, the recent progresses of 1O2 for energy storage and conversion is summarized, including physical and chemical properties, formation mechanisms, detection technologies, side reactions in rechargeable batteries and corresponding inhibition strategies, and applications in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. The formation mechanisms and inhibition strategies of 1O2 in particular aprotic lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are highlighted, and the applications of 1O2 in photocatalysis and electrocatalysis is also emphasized. Moreover, the confronting challenges and promising directions of 1O2 in energy conversion and storage systems are discussed.

Understanding Advanced Transition Metal-Based Two Electron Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts from the Perspective of Phase Engineering

Non-noble transition metal (TM)-based compounds have recently become a focal point of extensive research interest as electrocatalysts for the two electron oxygen reduction (2e- ORR) process. To efficiently drive this reaction, these TM-based electrocatalysts must bear unique physiochemical properties, which are strongly dependent on their phase structures. Consequently, adopting engineering strategies toward the phase structure has emerged as a cutting-edge scientific pursuit, crucial for achieving high activity, selectivity, and stability in the electrocatalytic process. This comprehensive review addresses the intricate field of phase engineering applied to non-noble TM-based compounds for 2e- ORR. First, the connotation of phase engineering and fundamental concepts related to oxygen reduction kinetics and thermodynamics are succinctly elucidated. Subsequently, the focus shifts to a detailed discussion of various phase engineering approaches, including elemental doping, defect creation, heterostructure construction, coordination tuning, crystalline design, and polymorphic transformation to boost or revive the 2e- ORR performance (selectivity, activity, and stability) of TM-based catalysts, accompanied by an insightful exploration of the phase-performance correlation. Finally, the review proposes fresh perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities in this burgeoning field, together with several critical research directions for the future development of non-noble TM-based electrocatalysts.

Hydrogen evolution descriptors of 55-atom PtNi nanoclusters and interaction with graphite

Density functional simulations have been performed for PtnNi55-nclusters (n=0,12,20,28,42,55) to investigate their catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Starting from the icosahedralPt12Ni43, hydrogen adsorption energetics and electronicd-band descriptors indicate HER activity comparable to that of purePt55(distorted reduced core structure). The PtNi clusters accommodate a large number of adsorbed hydrogen before reaching a saturated coverage, corresponding to 3-4 H atoms per icosahedron facet (in total ∼70-80). The differential adsorption free energies are well within the window of|ΔGH|<0.1 eV which is considered optimal for HER. The electronic descriptors show similarities with the platinumd-band, although the uncovered PtNi clusters are magnetic. Increasing hydrogen coverage suppresses magnetism and depletes electron density, resulting in expansion of the PtNi clusters. For a single H atom, the adsorption free energy varies between -0.32 (Pt12Ni43) and -0.59 eV (Pt55). The most stable adsorption site is Pt-Pt bridge for Pt-rich compositions and a hollow site surrounded by three Ni for Pt-poor compositions. A hydrogen molecule dissociates spontaneously on the Pt-rich clusters. The above HER activity predictions can be extended to PtNi on carbon support as the interaction with a graphite model structure (w/o vacancy defect) results in minor changes in the cluster properties only. The cluster-surface interaction is the strongest forPt55due to its large facing facet and associated van der Waals forces.

SOx Functionalized NiOOH Nanosheets Embedded in Ni(OH)2 Microarray for High-Efficiency Seawater Oxidation

A nano-micro heterostructure has been established to address the challenges of selectivity, stress, pitting corrosion, and long-term durability of anodes in unpurified seawater. The heterostructure comprised NiOOH nanosheets embedded within a high surface area Ni(OH)2 microarray, and the surface structure is further functionalized with sulfate (SOx). This cation-selective protective layer impedes chloride (Cl-) diffusion and abstracts H from reaction intermediates, leading to enhanced selectivity and corrosion resistance of the anode. The multilevel porosity within the randomly oriented nanosheets and the underlying support provide short diffusion channels for ions and mass migration, ensuring efficient ion transport and long-term structural and mechanical durability of the active sites, even at high current density. Remarkably, the catalyst requires a small input voltage of 400 mV to deliver a current density of 1 A cm-2 and maintains it for over 168 h without noticeable degradation or hypochlorite formation. Spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Ni electronic structure in the +3 valence state, its strong structural interaction with the underlying microarray, and the functionality of SOx significantly reduce the required potential for O-O coupling.

Phosphide-Based Electrocatalysts for Urea Electrolysis: Recent Trends and Progress

Electrolysis is a trend in producing hydrogen as a fuel for renewable energy development, and urea electrolysis is considered as one of the advanced electrolysis processes, where efficient materials still need to be explored. Notably, urea electrolysis came into existence to counter-part the electrode reactions in water electrolysis, which has hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Among those reactions, OER is sluggish and limits water splitting. Hence, urea electrolysis emerged with urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and HER as their reactions to tackle the water electrolysis. Among the explored materials, noble-metal catalysts are efficient, but their cost and scarcity limit the scaling-up of the Urea electrolysis. Hence, current challenges must be addressed, and novel efficient electrocatalysts are to be implemented to commercialize urea electrolysis technology. Phosphides, as an efficient UOR electrocatalyst, have gained huge attention due to their exceptional lattice structure geometry. The phosphide group benefits the water molecule adsorption and water dissociation, and facilitates the oxyhydrate of the metal site. This review summarizes recent trends in phosphide-based electrocatalysts for urea electrolysis, discusses synthesis strategies and crystal structure relationship with catalytic activity, and presents the challenges of phosphide electrocatalysts in urea electrolysis.

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall and Hybrid Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Two Electrocatalytic Selenoarsenates with Manganese Complex Cations as Counterions

The discovery of new organic hybrid chalcogenidometalates is of great importance for structural chemistry and functional material. Here, new types of organic hybrid selenoarsenates [Mn(dien)2]2[AsII4Se6] (1, dien = diethylenetriamine) and [Mn(dien)2]2[Mn(AsIIISe3)2] (2) have been solvothermally synthesized by the reaction of K3AsO3, Se, and MnCl2·xH2O (x = 0, 2) in dien solution at 120 °C. 1 presents a hitherto unknown [AsII4Se6]4- anion with low-valent As2+ ion, which comprises a centrosymmetric six-membered [AsII4Se2] ring in chair-like conformation, while 2 contains a new type of heterometallic selenoarsenate(III) [Mn(AsIIISe3)2]4- constructed by the connection of one tetrahedral [MnSe4] and two rare noncondensed [AsIIISe3]3- anions. 1 and 2 were first combined with nickel nanoparticle (Ni) and the nickel foam (NF) for fabricating the 1/Ni/NF and 2/Ni/NF electrodes, which exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalytic property with a low overpotential of 248 mV for 1 and 219 mV for 2 at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media.

Fabric-like rhodium-nickel-tungsten oxide nanosheets for highly-efficient electrocatalytic H2 generation in an alkaline electrolyte

Transition-metal based oxides with custom-designed phases are effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, their applications in water splitting are limited because of insufficient catalytic performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. In this work, we engineer fabric-like rhodium-nickel-tungsten oxide nanosheets (Rh2O3-NiWO4) on plasma-treated nickel foam (PNF) with a one-step hydrothermal approach for potential applications as industry-grade HER electrocatalysts. Benefiting from rich active sites exposed on the heterostructure, low hydrogen binding energy on Rh, and enhanced charge delivery rates, Rh2O3-NiWO4/PNF catalyst exhibits superior HER activity than that achieved by a commercially available Pt/C catalyst. This is evidenced by the fact that the overpotentials of Rh2O3-NiWO4/PNF for delivering current densities of 10 (j10) and 1000 (j1000) mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH are merely 19 and 293 mV, respectively. Meanwhile, the small Tafel slope (18 mV dec-1) of the optimized catalyst manifests the fast HER kinetics. In addition, Rh2O3-NiWO4/PNF exhibits ultra-stable HER performance, and the current density (j100) only decrease 7.69 % after 100 h chronoamperometric curves (I-t) test. The present work provides a new approach for designing high-performance, low-cost 2D electrocatalysts for H2 production and other clean energy-related applications.

An enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction by the photothermal effect and its induced micro-electric field

Promoting better thermodynamics and kinetics of electrocatalysts is key to achieving an efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Utilizing the photothermal effect and micro-electric field of electrocatalysts is a promising approach to promote the sluggish OER. Herein, to reveal the relationship of the photothermal effect and its induced micro-electric field with OER performance, NiSx coupled NiFe(OH)y on nickel foam (NiSx@NiFe(OH)y/NF) is synthesized and subjected to the OER under near-infrared (NIR) light. Owing to the photothermal effect and its induced micro-electric field, the OER performance of NiSx@NiFe(OH)y/NF is significantly enhanced. Compared with no NIR light irradiation, the overpotential at 50 mA cm-2 and the Tafel slope of NiSx@NiFe(OH)y/NF under NIR light irradiation were 234.1 mV and 38.0 mV dec-1, which were lower by 12.4 mV and 7.1 mV dec-1, and it exhibited stable operation at 1.6 V vs. RHE for 8 h with 99% activity maintained. This work presents a novel inspiration to understand the photothermal effect-enhanced electrocatalytic OER.

Low-Cost Hydrogen Production from Alkaline/Seawater over a Single-Step Synthesis of Mo3 Se4 -NiSe Core-Shell Nanowire Arrays

The rational design and steering of earth-abundant, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation is highly desirable but challenging with catalysts free of platinum group metals (PGMs). Mass production of high-purity hydrogen fuel from seawater electrolysis presents a transformative technology for sustainable alternatives. Here, a heterostructure of molybdenum selenide-nickel selenide (Mo3 Se4 -NiSe) core-shell nanowire arrays constructed on nickel foam by a single-step in situ hydrothermal process is reported. This tiered structure provides improved intrinsic activity and high electrical conductivity for efficient charge transfer and endows excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in alkaline and natural seawater conditions. The Mo3 Se4 -NiSe freestanding electrodes require small overpotentials of 84.4 and 166 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and natural seawater electrolytes, respectively. It maintains an impressive balance between electrocatalytic activity and stability. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the Mo3 Se4 -NiSe interface provides abundant active sites for the HER process, which modulate the binding energies of adsorbed species and decrease the energetic barrier, providing a new route to design state-of-the-art, PGM-free catalysts for hydrogen production from alkaline and seawater electrolysis.

Ultrafine Iridium Nanoparticles Anchored on Co-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets for Robust Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media

A highly promising electrocatalyst has been designed and prepared for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This involves incorporating well-dispersed Ir nanoparticles into a cobalt-based metal-organic framework known as Co-BPDC [Co(bpdc)(H2O)2, BPDC: 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid]. Ir@Co-BPDC demonstrates exceptional HER activity in alkaline media, surpassing both commercial Pt/C and recent noble-metal catalysts. Theoretical results indicate that electron redistribution, induced by interfacial bonds, optimizes the adsorption energy of water and hydrogen, thereby enhancing our understanding of the superior properties of Ir@Co-BPDC for HER.

The rigidity and chelation effect of ligands on the hydrogen evolution reaction catalyzed by Ni(II) complexes

With increasing interest in nickel-based electrocatalysts, three heteroleptic Ni(II) dithiolate complexes with the general formula [Ni(II)L(L')2] (1-3), L = 2-(methylene-1,1'-dithiolato)-5,5'-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione and L' = triphenylphosphine (1), 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (DPPF) (2), and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) (3), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, IR, 1H, and 31P{1H} NMR) as well as the electrochemical method. The molecular structure of complex 2 has also been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of complex 2 reveals a distorted square planar geometry around the nickel metal ion with a NiP2S2 core. The cyclic voltammograms reveal a small difference in the redox properties of complexes (ΔE° = 130 mV) while the difference in the catalytic half-wave potential becomes substantial (ΔEcat/2 = 670 mV) in the presence of 15 mM CF3COOH. The common S^S-dithiolate ligand provides stability, while the rigidity effect of other ligands (DPPE (3) > DPPF (2) > PPh3 (1)) regulates the formation of the transition state, resulting in the NiIII-H intermediate in the order of 1 > 2 > 3. The foot-of-the-wave analysis supports the widely accepted ECEC mechanism for Ni-based complexes with the first protonation step as a rate-determining step. The electrocatalytic proton reduction activity follows in the order of complex 1 > 2 > 3. The comparatively lower overpotential and higher turnover frequency of complex 1 are attributed to the flexibility of the PPh3 ligand, which favours the easy formation of a transition state.

Influence of Crystallographic Structure and Metal Vacancies on the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance of Ni-based Layered Hydroxides

Nickel-based layered hydroxides (LHs) are a family of efficient electrocatalysts for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, fundamental aspects such as the influence of the crystalline structure and the role of lattice distortion of the catalytic sites remain poorly understood and typically muddled. Herein, we carried out a comprehensive investigation on ɑ-LH, β-LH and layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases by means of structural, spectroscopical, in-silico and electrochemical studies, which suggest the key aspect exerted by Ni-vacancies in the ɑ-LH structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) confirm that the presence of Ni-vacancies produces acute distortions of the electroactive Ni sites (reflected as the shortening of the Ni-O distances and changes in the O-Ni-O angles), triggering the appearance of Ni localised electronic states on the Fermi level, reducing the Egap, and consequently, increasing the reactivity of the electroactive sites in the ɑ-LH structure. Furthermore, post-mortem Raman and XAS measurements unveil its transformation into a highly reactive oxyhydroxide-like phase that remains stable under ambient conditions. Hence, this work pinpoints the critical role of the crystalline structure as well as the electronic properties of LH structures on their inherent electrochemical reactivity towards OER catalysis. We envision Ni-based ɑ-LH as a perfect platform for hosting trivalent cations, closing the gap toward the next generation of benchmark efficient earth-abundant electrocatalysts.

Hierarchical Superhydrophilic/Superaerophobic Ni(OH)2@NiFe-PBA Nanoarray Supported on Nickel Foam for Boosting the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The design of hierarchical electrocatalysts with plentiful active sites and high mass transfer efficiency is critical to efficiently and sustainably carrying out the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which presents a challenging and pressing need. In this study, a hierarchical Ni(OH)2@NiFe-Prussian blue analogue nanoarray grown on nickel foam (NF) [labeled as Ni(OH)2@NiFe-PBA/NF] was synthesized by combining a mild electrodeposition method with an ion-exchange strategy. The resultant Ni(OH)2@NiFe-PBA/NF displays superhydrophilic/superaerophobic properties that optimize the contact with the electrolyte, improve mass transfer efficiency, and expedite detachment of O2 bubbles during the electrocatalytic OER. Specifically, Ni(OH)2@NiFe-PBA/NF exhibits exceptional capability in the OER with low overpotentials of 224 and 240 mV at the current densities of 50 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, accompanied by a low Tafel slope of 37.1 mV dec-1 and outstanding stability over 100 h at a fixed potential of 1.78 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Furthermore, Ni(OH)2@NiFe-PBA/NF demonstrates remarkable OER performance even in alkaline simulated seawater. During the OER process, active metal-OOH intermediates were formed by the partial self-reconstruction of NiFe-PBA in the heterostructure, as revealed by in situ Raman spectroscopy.

Review of Carbon Support Coordination Environments for Single Metal Atom Electrocatalysts (SACS)

This topical review focuses on the distinct role of carbon support coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) for electrocatalysis. The article begins with an overview of atomic coordination configurations in SACs, including a discussion of the advanced characterization techniques and simulation used for understanding the active sites. A summary of key electrocatalysis applications is then provided. These processes are oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR). The review then shifts to modulation of the metal atom-carbon coordination environments, focusing on nitrogen and other non-metal coordination through modulation at the first coordination shell and modulation in the second and higher coordination shells. Representative case studies are provided, starting with the classic four-nitrogen-coordinated single metal atom (MN4 ) based SACs. Bimetallic coordination models including homo-paired and hetero-paired active sites are also discussed, being categorized as emerging approaches. The theme of the discussions is the correlation between synthesis methods for selective doping, the carbon structure-electron configuration changes associated with the doping, the analytical techniques used to ascertain these changes, and the resultant electrocatalysis performance. Critical unanswered questions as well as promising underexplored research directions are identified.

Nanoscale Metal Particle Modified Single-Atom Catalyst: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis because of their well-defined active sites, maximum atomic utilization efficiency, and unique unsaturated coordinated structures. However, their effectiveness is limited to reactions requiring active sites containing multiple metal atoms. Furthermore, the loading amounts of single-atom sites must be restricted to prevent aggregation, which can adversely affect the catalytic performance despite the high activity of the individual atoms. The introduction of nanoscale metal particles (NMPs) into SACs (NMP-SACs) has proven to be an efficient approach for improving their catalytic performance. A comprehensive review is urgently needed to systematically introduce the synthesis, characterization, and application of NMP-SACs and the mechanisms behind their superior catalytic performance. This review first presents and classifies the different mechanisms through which NMPs enhance the performance of SACs. It then summarizes the currently reported synthetic strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques of NMP-SACs. Moreover, their application in electro/thermo/photocatalysis, and the reasons for their superior performance are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of NMP-SACs for the future design of advanced catalysts are addressed.

A Mechanistic Overview of the Current Status and Future Challenges in Air Cathode for Aluminum Air Batteries

Aluminum air batteries (AABs) are a desirable option for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles (EVs) due to their high theoretical energy density (8100 Wh K-1 ), low cost, and high safety compared to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, numerous unresolved technological and scientific issues are preventing AABs from expanding further. One of the key issues is the catalytic reaction kinetics of the air cathode as the fuel (oxygen) for AAB is reduced there. Additionally, the performance and price of an AAB are directly influenced by an air electrode integrated with an oxygen electrocatalyst, which is thought to be the most crucial element. In this study, we covered the oxygen chemistry of the air cathode as well as a brief discussion of the mechanistic insights of active catalysts and how they catalyze and enhance oxygen chemistry reactions. There is also extensive discussion of research into electrocatalytic materials that outperform Pt/C such as nonprecious metal catalysts, metal oxide, perovskites, metal-organic framework, carbonaceous materials, and their composites. Finally, we provide an overview of the present state, and possible future direction for air cathodes in AABs.

Lattice Strain and Composition Effects on the Methanol Oxidation Performance of Platinum-Ruthenium-Nickel Ternary Nanocatalysts

Ternary Pt-based structures are a positive progress in addressing the disadvantages of monometallic and bimetallic Pt-based alloys for the electrochemical oxidation process of simple alcohols, which is a vital half-reaction in fuel cell technologies. We herein report a facile NaBH4-assisted ethylene glycol reduction process for fabricating a series of nanosized PtRuNi ternary alloys to explore the relationship between physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behaviors for the acidic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Owing to a balance between lattice strain and synergistic effects, the Pt60Ru20Ni20/C electrocatalyst shows the highest MOR efficiency with the mass activity/specific activity of 844.48 mA mgMetal-1/1.93 mA cm-2, being a 1.94 and 2.38 times increase compared to those of the PtRu catalyst, respectively. Also, the Pt60Ru20Ni20/C catalyst possesses superior CO-tolerance and durability in strongly acidic electrolytes. This work suggests that optimizing the surface strain and electronic effects can boost the overall MOR efficiency of multicomponent Pt-based materials, which can help to further develop next-generation catalysts for energy conversion-related technologies.

Improved hydrogen evolution performance of Ni-based nanoporous catalyst with Mo and B co-addition

The exploration of efficient and stable noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great interest for the development of electrochemical hydrogen production technologies. Herein, nanoporous Ni-based catalyst with Mo and B co-addition (NiMoB) prepared by dealloying is reported as an efficient electrocatalysts for HER. The nanoporous NiMoB achieves an overpotential of 31 mV at 10 mA cm-2, along with exceptional catalytic stability in alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the incorporation of Mo and B can synergistically optimize the electronic structure and regulate the adsorption of HER intermediates on the Ni active site, thus accelerating the HER kinetics. This study provides a new perspective for the development of non-precious Ni-based catalysts towards efficient hydrogen energy conversion.

Carbon nanotubes encapsulating Pt/MoN heterostructures for superior hydrogen evolution

Achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to scale up electrochemical water splitting is desirable but remains a major challenge. Here, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) loaded with PtNi/MoN electrocatalyst (PtNi/MoN@C) is synthesized by a simple strategy to obtain stronger interphase effects and significantly improve HER activity. The surface morphology of the materials is altered by Pt doping and the electronic structure of MoN is changed, which optimizing the electronic environment of the materials, shifting the binding energy and giving the materials a higher electrical conductivity, this ultimately leads to faster proton and electron transfer processes. The synergistic effect of Pt nanoparticles, MoN and the good combination with carbon leads to a high HER activity of 18 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C. Theoretical studies show that the heterostructures can efficiently enhance the electron transport and reduce the △GH*.

Tuning the Nucleophilicity and Electrophilicity of Group 10 Elements through Substituent Effects: A DFT Study

In this study, a series of electron donor (-NH2, -NMe2 and -tBu) and electron-withdrawing substituents (-F, -CN and -NO2) were used to tune the nucleophilicity or electrophilicity of a series of square planar Ni2+, Pd2+ and Pt2+ malonate coordination complexes towards a pentafluoroiodobenzene and a pyridine molecule. In addition, Bader's theory of atoms in molecules (AIM), noncovalent interaction plot (NCIplot), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses at the PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory were carried out to characterize and discriminate the role of the metal atom in the noncovalent complexes studied herein. We hope that the results reported herein may serve to expand the current knowledge regarding these metals in the fields of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry.

Facile solvothermal preparation of an organic hybrid dysprosium selenidoantimonate for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction

To overcome the issue of the sluggish kinetics in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the development of an efficient OER electrocatalyst with high intrinsic activity is very desirable for green hydrogen energy utilization from electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a facile and feasible solvothermal reaction of Sb, Se, DyCl3 and triethylenetetramine (teta) at 170 °C for 7 days achieved a new organic hybrid dysprosium selenidoantimonate [Dy(teta)2][SbSe4] (SbSe-1), which comprises discrete [SbSe4]3- and [Dy(teta)2]3+ ions. SbSe-1 was utilized in combination with acetylene black (AB), Ni nanoparticles and the porous Ni foam (NF) support to fabricate a Ni/SbSe-1@AB/NF electrode as an efficient anodic electrocatalyst, showing excellent OER electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of 269 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Although some antimony chalcogenides are used as electrocatalysts for the water splitting, organic hybrid lanthanide chalcogenidoantimonates applied as OER electrocatalysts have not emerged. Therefore, SbSe-1 offers the first example of an organic hybrid lanthanide chalcogenido-antimonate as an OER electrocatalyst.

Modulating the d-Band Center Enables Ultrafine Pt3 Fe Alloy Nanoparticles for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

By providing dual active sites to synergistically accelerate H2 O dissociation and H+ reduction, ordered intermetallic alloys usually show extraordinary performance for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, activated N-doped mesoporous carbon spheres supported intermetallic Pt3 Fe alloys (Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A), as a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for pH-universal HER, are reported. The Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A exhibits low overpotentials (η10 ) of 13, 29, and 48 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , 1.0 m KOH, and 1.0 m phosphate buffered solution (PBS), respectively, as well as robust stability to maintain the overall catalytic performances. Theoretical studies reveal that the strong Pt 5d-Fe 3d orbital electronic interactions negatively shift the d-band center (εd ) of Pt 5d orbital, resulting in reduced H* adsorption energy of Pt sites and enhanced acidic HER activity. With Pt and Fe acting as co-adsorption sites for H* and *OH intermediates, respectively, a low energy barrier is required for Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A to dissociate H2 O to afford H* intermediates, which greatly promotes the H* adsorption and H2 formation in alkaline and neutral conditions. The synthetic strategy is further extended to the synthesis of Pt3 Co and Pt3 Ni alloys with excellent HER activity in pH-universal electrolytes, demonstrating the great potential of these Pt-based alloys for practical applications.

Effect of urea and ammonium fluoride ratio on CuCo2S4/NF as a highly efficient HER catalyst

CuCo2S4 as a spinel-structured transition metal sulfide is a highly effective HER catalyst due to its excellent endurance, low overpotential, and low Tafel slope. In this work, the CuCo2S4/Ni foam (NF) catalysts with various morphologies have been successfully synthesized by controlling the ratio of urea and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) based on the hydrothermal method. Urea and NH4F ratio exhibit a great influence on the microstructure and the HER catalytic performance of CuCo2S4/NF catalysts is discussed in detail.

Electrocatalytic study of the hydrogen evolution reaction on MoS2/BP and MoSSe/BP in acidic media

Molecular hydrogen (H2) production by the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is being actively explored for non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts that are earth-abundant and low cost like MoS2. Although it is acid-stable, its applicability is limited by catalytically inactive basal planes, poor electrical transport and inefficient charge transfer at the interface. Therefore, the present work examines its bilayer van der Waals heterostructure (vdW HTS). The second constituent monolayer boron phosphide (BP) is advantageous as an electrode material owing to its chemical stability in both oxygen and water environments. Here, we have performed first-principles based calculations under the framework of density functional theory (DFT) for the HER in an electrochemical double layer model with the BP monolayer, MoS2/BP and MoSSe/BP vdW HTSs. The climbing image nudged elastic band method (CI-NEB) has been employed to determine the minimum energy pathways for Tafel and Heyrovsky reactions. The calculations reveal that the Tafel reaction shows no reaction barrier. Thereafter, for the Heyrovsky reaction, we obtained a low reaction barrier in the vdW HTSs as compared to that in the BP monolayer. Subsequently, we have observed no significant difference in the reaction profile of MoS2/BP and MoSSe/BP vdW HTSs in the case of 2 × 2 supercell configuration. However, in the case of 3 × 3 and 4 × 4 configurations, MoSSe/BP shows a feasible Heyrovsky reaction with no reaction barrier. The coverages with 1/4H+ concentration (conc.) deduced high coverage with low conc. and low coverage with high conc. to be apt for the HER via the Heyrovsky reaction path. Finally, on observing the activation barrier of the Heyrovsky pathway along with that of second H adsorption at the surface, the Heyrovsky path is expected to be favoured.

Enhanced membraneless fuel cells by electrooxidation of ethylene glycol with a nanostructured cobalt metal catalyst

The advancement of effective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for energy storage devices is crucial to reduce the impact of the energy crisis. In this study, a two-stage reduction process was used to synthesize carbon-supported cobalt alloy nanocatalysts with varying atomic ratios of cobalt, nickel and iron. The formed alloy nanocatalysts were investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy to determine their physicochemical characterization. According to XRD results, Cobalt-based alloy nanocatalysts form a face-centered cubic solid solution pattern, illustrating thoroughly mixed ternary metal solid solutions. Transmission electron micrographs also demonstrated that samples of carbon-based cobalt alloys displayed homogeneous dispersion at particle sizes ranging from 18 to 37 nm. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry revealed that iron alloy samples exhibited much greater electrochemical activity than non-iron alloy samples. The alloy nanocatalysts were evaluated as anodes for the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol in a single membraneless fuel cell to assess their robustness and efficiency at ambient temperature. Remarkably, in line with the results of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, the single-cell test showed that the ternary anode works better than its counterparts. The significantly higher electrochemical activity was observed for alloy nanocatalysts containing iron than for non-iron alloy catalysts. Iron stimulates nickel sites to oxidize cobalt to cobalt oxyhydroxides at lower over-potentials, which contributes to the improved performance of ternary alloy catalysts containing iron.

Rational Design of a Copper Cobalt Sulfide/Tungsten Disulfide Heterostructure for Excellent Overall Water Splitting

Integrating different components into a heterostructure is a novel approach that increases the number of active centers to enhance the catalytic activities of a catalyst. This study uses an efficient, facile hydrothermal strategy to synthesize a unique heterostructure of copper cobalt sulfide and tungsten disulfide (CuCo2S4-WS2) nanowires on a Ni foam (NF) substrate. The nanowire arrays (CuCo2S4-WS2/NF) with multiple integrated active sites exhibit small overpotentials of 202 (299) and 240 (320) mV for HER and OER at 20 (50) mA cm-2 and 1.54 V (10 mA cm-2) for an electrolyzer in 1.0 M KOH, surpassing commercial and previously reported catalysts. A solar electrolyzer composed of CuCo2S4-WS2 bifunctional electrodes also produced significant amounts of hydrogen through a water splitting process. The remarkable performance is accredited to the extended electroactive surface area, reasonable density of states near the Fermi level, optimal adsorption free energies, and good charge transfer ability, further validating the excellent dual function of CuCo2S4-WS2/NF in electrochemical water splitting.

In-Site Grown NiFeOOH Nanosheets Foam Directly as Robust Electrocatalyst for Efficient Urea Oxidation Application

In this work, a series of morphology-controlled NiFeOOH nanosheets were directly developed through a one-step mild in-situ acid-etching hydrothermal process. Benefiting from the ultrathin interwoven geometric structure and most favorable electron transport structure, the NiFeOOH nanosheets synthesized under 120 °C (denoted as NiFe_120) exhibited the optimal electrochemical performance for urea oxidation reaction (UOR). An overpotential of merely 1.4 V was required to drive the current density of 100 mA cm-2 , and the electrochemical activity remains no change even after 5000 cycles' accelerated degradation test. Moreover, the assembled urea electrolysis set by using the NiFe_120 as bifunctional catalysts presented a reduced potential of 1.573 V at 10 mA cm-2 , which was much lower than that of overall water splitting. We believe this work will lay a foundation for developing high-performance urea oxidation catalysts for the large-scale production of hydrogen and purification of urea-rich sewage.

Atomic-scale insights into the interfacial charge transfer in a NiO/CeO2 heterostructure for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

To understand the underlying mechanism of the interfacial charge transfer and local chemical state variation in the nonprecious-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, a model system of the NiO/CeO₂ heterostructure was chosen for investigation using a combination of the advanced electron microscopic characterization and first-principles calculations. The results directly proved that interfacial charge transfer occurs from Ni to Ce, leading to reduction in the valence state of Ce and increased formation of V_O. This would optimize ΔG_H* and facilitate the hydrogen evolution process, resulting in outstanding HER performance in 1 M KOH with a low overpotential of 99 mV at the current density of 10 mA•cm^-2 and a modest Tafel slope of 78.4 mV•dec^-1 for the NiO/CeO₂ heterostructure sample. Therefore, the improved HER performance could be attributed to the synergistic coupling interactions and electron redistribution at the interface of NiO and CeO₂. These results concretely demonstrate the direct determination of the interfacial structure of the heterostructure and provide atomistic insights to unravel the underlying mechanism of interfacial charge transfer induced HER performance improvement.

A Facile Molecular Approach to Amorphous Nickel Pnictides and Their Reconstruction to Crystalline Potassium-Intercalated γ-NiOOHx Enabling High-Performance Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation and Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

The low-temperature molecular precursor approach can be beneficial to conventional solid-state methods, which require high temperatures and lead to relatively large crystalline particles. Herein, a novel, single-step, room-temperature preparation of amorphous nickel pnictide (NiE; EP, As) nanomaterials is reported, starting from NaOCE(dioxane)n and NiBr2 (thf)1.5 . During application for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the pnictide anions leach, and both materials fully reconstruct into nickel(III/IV) oxide phases (similar to γ-NiOOH) comprising edge-sharing (NiO6 ) layers with intercalated potassium ions and a d-spacing of 7.27 Å. Remarkably, the intercalated γ-NiOOHx phases are nanocrystalline, unlike the amorphous nickel pnictide precatalysts. This unconventional reconstruction is fast and complete, which is ascribed to the amorphous nature of the nanostructured NiE precatalysts. The obtained γ-NiOOHx can effectively catalyse the OER for 100 h at a high current density (400 mA cm-2 ) and achieves outstandingly high current densities (>600 mA cm-2 ) for the selective, value-added oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The NiP-derived γ-NiOOHx shows a higher activity for both processes due to more available active sites. It is anticipated that the herein developed, effective, room-temperature molecular synthesis of amorphous nickel pnictide nanomaterials can be applied to other functional transition-metal pnictides.

Engineering the microenvironment of electron transport layers with nickle single-atom sites for boosting photoelectrochemical performance

Advances in the rational design of semiconductor-electrocatalyst photoelectrodes provide robust driving forces for improving energy conversion and quantitative analysis, while a deep understanding of elementary processes remains underwhelming due to the multistage interfaces involved in semiconductor/electrocatalyst/electrolyte. To address this bottleneck, we have constructed carbon-supported nickel single atoms (Ni SA@C) as an original electron transport layer with catalytic sites of Ni-N4 and Ni-N2O2. This approach illustrates the combined effect of photogenerated electron extraction and the surface electron escape ability of the electrocatalyst layer in the photocathode system. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal that Ni-N4@C, with excellent oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity, is more beneficial for alleviating surface charge accumulation and facilitating electrode-electrolyte interfacial electron-injection efficiency under a similar built-in electric field. This instructive method enables us to engineer the microenvironment of the charge transport layer for steering the interfacial charge extract and reaction kinetics, providing a great prospect for atomic scale materials to enhance photoelectrochemical performance.

One-Dimensional Selenidostannates Based on an Infrequent Tetrameric Cluster [Sn4Se12] Exhibiting Electro-Catalytic Properties

The discovery of low-cost and efficient electro-catalytic materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is very desirable in hydrogen energy technology. Here, a new type of one-dimensional (1-D) organic hybrid selenidostannate [Ni(en)₃]_n[Sn₂Se₅]_n (SnSe-1, en = ethylenediamine) with an in situ [Ni(en)₃]²⁺ complex was achieved by the solvothermal reaction of Sn, Se, and NiCl₂·6H₂O in a mixed solvent of en and triethanolamine at 160 °C for 10 days. The crystal structure of SnSe-1 contains a unique 1-D [Sn₂Se₅^2-]_n chain built up from the sharing-edge connection of a hitherto-unknown tetrameric [Sn₄Se₁₂] cluster, which is separated by discrete [Ni(en)₃]²⁺ complexes. SnSe-1 is first combined with Ni nanoparticles supported on conductive porous Ni foam (NF) to constitute a Ni/SnSe-1/NF electrode as the HER electro-catalyst, displaying superior electro-catalytic activity in near-neutral conditions.

A low-content CeOx dually promoted Ni3Fe@CNT electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Rational construction of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting is crucial for the advancement of renewable hydrogen fuel. Hybridizing heterojunctions or noble metals is one typical strategy used to boost the electrocatalytic performance for either the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, low-content CeO_x (3.74 wt%) is introduced into Ni₃Fe nanoparticle-encapsulated carbon nanotubes (Ni₃Fe@CNTs/CeO_x), with both the OER and HER activities boosted, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The composite is derived by pyrolyzing a mixture of melamine/ternary NiFeCe-layered double hydroxide. The composite electrocatalyst requires low overpotentials of 195 and 125 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively, which are superior to those of Ni₃Fe@CNTs/NF (313 and 139 mV) and CeO_x/NF (345 and 129 mV), and in particular, OER overpotentials of 320 and 370 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm^-2, respectively. Moreover, the composite-assembled electrolyzer for overall water splitting requires a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a decent cell voltage of 1.641 V. Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated by the synergistic effect: the dual role of CeO_x in boosting the OER and HER, the highly conductive carbonaceous CNTs, large electrochemically active surface area and low charge-transfer resistance. The results can offer an effective route for designing and preparing low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Transforming NiCo2O4 nanorods into nanoparticles using citrus lemon juice enhancing electrochemical properties for asymmetric supercapacitor and water oxidation

Recently, the nanostructured nickel-cobalt bimetallic oxide (NiCo₂O₄) material with high electrochemical activity has received intensive attention. Beside this, the biomass assisted synthesis of NiCo₂O₄ is gaining popularity due to its advantageous features such as being low cost, simplicity, minimal use of toxic chemicals, and environment-friendly and ecofriendly nature. The electrochemical activity of spinel NiCo₂O₄ is associated with its mixed metal oxidation states. Therefore, much attention has been paid to the crystal quality, morphology and tunable surface chemistry of NiCo₂O₄ nanostructures. In this study, we have used citrus lemon juice consisting of a variety of chemical compounds having the properties of a stabilizing agent, capping agent and chelating agent. Moreover, the presence of several acidic chemical compounds in citrus lemon juice changed the pH of the growth solution and consequently we observed surface modified and structural changes that were found to be very effective for the development of energy conversion and energy storage systems. These naturally occurring compounds in citrus lemon juice played a dynamic role in transforming the nanorod morphology of NiCo₂O₄ into small and well-packed nanoparticles. Hence, the prepared NiCo₂O₄ nanostructures exhibited a new surface-oriented nanoparticle morphology, high concentration of defects on the surface (especially oxygen vacancies), sufficient ionic diffusion and reaction of electrolytic ions, enhanced electrical conductivity, and favorable reaction kinetics at the interface. The electrocatalytic properties of the NiCo₂O₄ nanostructures were studied in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a low overpotential of 250 mV for 10 mA cm^-2, Tafel slope of 98 mV dec^-1, and durability of 40 h. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor was produced and the obtained results indicated a high specific capacitance of (C_s) of 1519.19 F g^-1, and energy density of 33.08 W h kg^-1 at 0.8 A g^-1. The enhanced electrochemical performance could be attributed to the favorable structural changes, surface modification, and surface crystal facet exposure due to the use of citrus lemon juice. The proposed method of transformation of nanorod to nanoparticles could be used for the design of a new generation of efficient electrocatalyst materials for energy storage and conversion uses.

Synthesis of Ketjenblack Decorated Pillared Ni(Fe) Metal-Organic Frameworks as Precursor Electrocatalysts for Enhancing the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated with regard to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their structure diversity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and abundant active sites. However, the poor conductivity of most MOFs restricts this application. Herein, through a facile one-step solvothermal method, the Ni-based pillared metal-organic framework [Ni2(BDC)2DABCO] (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), its bimetallic nickel-iron form [Ni(Fe)(BDC)2DABCO], and their modified Ketjenblack (mKB) composites were synthesized and tested toward OER in an alkaline medium (KOH 1 mol L-1). A synergistic effect of the bimetallic nickel-iron MOF and the conductive mKB additive enhanced the catalytic activity of the MOF/mKB composites. All MOF/mKB composite samples (7, 14, 22, and 34 wt.% mKB) indicated much higher OER performances than the MOFs and mKB alone. The Ni-MOF/mKB14 composite (14 wt.% of mKB) demonstrated an overpotential of 294 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 32 mV dec-1, which is comparable with commercial RuO2, commonly used as a benchmark material for OER. The catalytic performance of Ni(Fe)MOF/mKB14 (0.57 wt.% Fe) was further improved to an overpotential of 279 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The low Tafel slope of 25 mV dec-1 as well as a low reaction resistance due to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement confirmed the excellent OER performance of the Ni(Fe)MOF/mKB14 composite. For practical applications, the Ni(Fe)MOF/mKB14 electrocatalyst was impregnated into commercial nickel foam (NF), where overpotentials of 247 and 291 mV at current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm-2, respectively, were realized. The activity was maintained for 30 h at the applied current density of 50 mA cm-2. More importantly, this work adds to the fundamental understanding of the in situ transformation of Ni(Fe)DMOF into OER-active α/β-Ni(OH)2, β/γ-NiOOH, and FeOOH with residual porosity inherited from the MOF structure, as seen by powder X-ray diffractometry and N2 sorption analysis. Benefitting from the porosity structure of the MOF precursor, the nickel-iron catalysts outperformed the solely Ni-based catalysts due to their synergistic effects and exhibited superior catalytic activity and long-term stability in OER. In addition, by introducing mKB as a conductive carbon additive in the MOF structure, a homogeneous conductive network was constructed to improve the electronic conductivity of the MOF/mKB composites. The electrocatalytic system consisting of earth-abundant Ni and Fe metals only is attractive for the development of efficient, practical, and economical energy conversion materials for efficient OER activity.

Nanocomposite Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions (HERs) for Sustainable and Efficient Hydrogen Energy-Future Prospects

Hydrogen is considered a good clean and renewable energy substitute for fossil fuels. The major obstacle facing hydrogen energy is its efficacy in meeting its commercial-scale demand. One of the most promising pathways for efficient hydrogen production is through water-splitting electrolysis. This requires the development of active, stable, and low-cost catalysts or electrocatalysts to achieve optimized electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting. The objective of this review is to survey the activity, stability, and efficiency of various electrocatalysts involved in water splitting. The status quo of noble-metal- and non-noble-metal-based nano-electrocatalysts has been specifically discussed. Various composites and nanocomposite electrocatalysts that have significantly impacted electrocatalytic HERs have been discussed. New strategies and insights in exploring nanocomposite-based electrocatalysts and utilizing other new age nanomaterial options that will profoundly enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of HERs have been highlighted. Recommendations on future directions and deliberations for extrapolating information have been projected.

Manganese cobalt sulfide/molybdenum disulfide nanowire heterojunction as an excellent bifunctional catalyst for electrochemical water splitting

Heterointerface engineering enhances catalytic active centers and charge transfer capabilities to increase oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. In this study, a novel heterostructure of manganese cobalt sulfide-molybdenum disulfide on nickel foam (MnCo₂S₄-MoS₂/NF) was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process. The nanowire-shaped MnCo₂S₄-MoS₂ on NF displayed accelerated charge transfer ability and multiple integrated active sites. When tested in one molar (1 M) potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte, it furnished low overpotentials of 105 and 171 mV for the HER and 220 and 300 mV for the OER at the current densities of 20 and 50 mA cm^-2, respectively. An electrolyzer based on MnCo₂S₄-MoS₂/NF required low operating potentials of 1.41 and 1.49 V to yield the current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm^-2, respectively, surpassing commercial and previously reported catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis revealed that the MnCo₂S₄-MoS₂ heterostructure possesses the optimal adsorption free energies for the reactants, an extended electroactive surface area, good charge transfer ability, and reasonable density of electronic states close to the Fermi level, all of which contribute to the high activity of catalyst. Thus, heterointerface engineering is a promising strategy for creating efficient catalysts for overall water splitting.

Recent advances in interface engineering of Fe/Co/Ni-based heterostructure electrocatalysts for water splitting

Among various methods of developing hydrogen energy, electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is one of the approaches to achieve the goal of zero carbon emissions. It is of great significance to develop highly active and stable catalysts to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production. In recent years, the construction of nanoscale heterostructure electrocatalysts through interface engineering can not only overcome the shortcomings of single-component materials to effectively improve their electrocatalytic efficiency and stability but also adjust the intrinsic activity or design synergistic interfaces to improve catalytic performance. Among them, some researchers proposed to replace the slow oxygen evolution reaction at the anode with the oxidation reaction of renewable resources such as biomass to improve the catalytic efficiency of the overall water splitting. The existing reviews in the field of electrocatalysis mainly focus on the relationship between the interface structure, principle, and principle of catalytic reaction, and some articles summarize the performance and improvement schemes of transition metal electrocatalysts. Among them, few studies are focusing on Fe/Co/Ni-based heterogeneous compounds, and there are fewer summaries on the oxidation reactions of organic compounds at the anode. To this end, this paper comprehensively describes the interface design and synthesis, interface classification, and application in the field of electrocatalysis of Fe/Co/Ni-based electrocatalysts. Based on the development and application of current interface engineering strategies, the experimental results of biomass electrooxidation reaction (BEOR) replacing anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are discussed, and it is feasible to improve the overall electrocatalytic reaction efficiency by coupling with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In the end, the challenges and prospects for the application of Fe/Co/Ni-based heterogeneous compounds in water splitting are briefly discussed.

Solid-Liquid-Gas Management for Low-Cost Hydrogen Gas Batteries

Aqueous nickel-hydrogen gas (Ni-H₂) batteries with excellent durability (>10,000 cycles) are important candidates for grid-scale energy storage but are hampered by the high-cost Pt electrode with limited performance. Herein, we report a low-cost nickel-molybdenum (NiMo) alloy as an efficient bifunctional hydrogen evolution and oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) catalyst for Ni-H₂ batteries in alkaline electrolytes. The NiMo alloy demonstrates a high HOR mass-specific kinetic current of 28.8 mA mg^-1 at 50 mV as well as a low HER overpotential of 45 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is better than most nonprecious metal catalysts. Furthermore, we apply a solid-liquid-gas management strategy to constitute a conductive, hydrophobic network of NiMo using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (NiMo-hydrophobic MWCNT) in the electrode to accelerate HER/HOR activities for much improved Ni-H₂ battery performance. As a result, Ni-H₂ cells based on the NiMo-hydrophobic MWCNT electrode show a high energy density of 118 Wh kg^-1 and a low cost of only 67.5 $ kWh^-1. With the low cost, high energy density, excellent durability, and improved energy efficiency, the Ni-H₂ cells show great potential for practical grid-scale energy storage.

Multicomponent Metal Oxide- and Metal Hydroxide-Based Electrocatalysts for Alkaline Water Splitting

Developing cost-effective, highly catalytic active, and stable electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes is important for the development of highly efficient anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). To this end, metal oxides/hydroxides have attracted wide research interest for efficient electrocatalysts in water splitting owing to their abundance and tunable electronic properties. It is very challenging to achieve an efficient overall catalytic performance based on single metal oxide/hydroxide-based electrocatalysts due to low charge mobilities and limited stability. This review is mainly focused on the advanced strategies to synthesize the multicomponent metal oxide/hydroxide-based materials that include nanostructure engineering, heterointerface engineering, single-atom catalysts, and chemical modification. The state of the art of metal oxide/hydroxide-based heterostructures with various architectures is extensively discussed. Finally, this review provides the fundamental challenges and perspectives regarding the potential future direction of multicomponent metal oxide/hydroxide-based electrocatalysts.

Evolution of Carbonate-Intercalated γ-NiOOH from a Molecularly Derived Nickel Sulfide (Pre)Catalyst for Efficient Water and Selective Organic Oxidation

The development of a competent (pre)catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to produce green hydrogen is critical for a carbon-neutral economy. In this aspect, the low-temperature, single-source precursor (SSP) method allows the formation of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts, with better control over their structural and electronic properties. Herein, a transition metal (TM) based chalcogenide material, nickel sulfide (NiS), is prepared from a novel molecular complex [Ni^II (PyHS)₄ ][OTf]₂ (1) and utilized as a (pre)catalyst for OER. The NiS (pre)catalyst requires an overpotential of only 255 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and shows 63 h of chronopotentiometry (CP) stability along with over 95% Faradaic efficiency in 1 m KOH. Several ex situ measurements and quasi in situ Raman spectroscopy uncover that NiS irreversibly transformed to a carbonate-intercalated γ-NiOOH phase under the alkaline OER conditions, which serves as the actual active structure for the OER. Additionally, this in situ formed active phase successfully catalyzes the selective oxidation of alcohol, aldehyde, and amine-based organic substrates to value-added chemicals, with high efficiencies.
