Molecular symmetry change of perfluoro-n-alkanes in 'Phase I' monitored by infrared spectroscopy

Phase diagram of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) comprises four regions. Phases II and IV are characterized by twisted perfluoroalkyl (Rf) chains having different twisting rate of 13/6 and 15/7, respectively, while Phase III is characterized by a planer trans-zigzag molecular skeleton like a normal alkyl chain. These are confirmed by X-ray and electron diffraction and have already been established. Unlike these, Phase I is left an unresolved matter. This phase is complicated indeed and is not symbolized by a single molecular structure. At an ambient pressure, Phase I is the temperature region above 30 ºC (303 K), and the helical molecular structure is supposed to be gradually untwisted with an elevating temperature. This untwisting image is roughly suggested by the diffraction, neutron scattering, and thermal expansion techniques, but the conventional approaches have all experimental limitations because the untwisting accompanies disorder (or defect) in the twist along the chain. To explore the transition between two different helical structures of the Rf chain having disordered structures, vibrational spectroscopic techniques are expected to be an alternative approach. For infrared spectroscopy, for example, the twisting rate of the molecule is simply recognized as a degree of molecular symmetry. Here, we show that the band progression peaks of the CF2 symmetric stretching vibration mode are quite sensitive and useful for pursuing the molecular symmetry change in Phase I for both peak intensity and position using perfluoro-n-alkanes having different chain length covering both even and odd number of the CF2 groups.

Monodispersed Au nanoparticles decorated MoS2 nanosheets with enhanced peroxidase-like activity based electrochemical H2O2 sensing for anticancer drug evaluations

BACKGROUND

The unique size, physical and chemical properties, and ultra-high stability of nanozymes have attracted extensive attentions in sensing, but improvement of catalytic activity of the nanozymes is still an urgent issue. Given the ultra-high simulated enzyme activity of metal nanoparticles and the advantage of multi-enzyme catalysis, an Au-decorated MoS2 nanosheets (MoS2/Au NS) integrating the double peroxidase-like (POD) activity is developed.

RESULTS

By optimizing and adjusting the density of AuNPs, as well as its morphology and other parameters, a monodisperse and high-density distribution of AuNPs on MoS2 nanosheets was obtained, which can greatly improve the POD-like activity of MoS2/Au NS. Nafion solution was applied to assist the modification of MoS2/Au NS on the electrode surface so as to improved its stability. An electrochemical H2O2 detection platform was constructed by modifying MoS2/Au NS nanozyme on the SPCE using the conductive Nafion solution. And the negatively charged sulfonic acid group can eliminate negatively charged electroactive substances to improve the specificity. Then ascorbic acid was used to stimulate tumor cells to produce H2O2 as therapeutic model, an ultrasensitive chronocoulometry detection for H2O2 in cell lysate was established. The logarithmically of ΔQ and the logarithmically of H2O2 concentration showed a good linear relationship between 1 μM and 500 mM, with a LOD value of 0.3 μM.

SIGNIFICANCE

The developed H2O2 sensor has excellent stability, reproducibility (RSD = 2.3 %, n = 6) and selectivity, realized the quantitative detection of H2O2 in cell lysate. Compared with commercial fluorescence detection kits for H2O2 in cell lysate, it is worth mentioning that the electrochemical H2O2 sensor developed in this study is simpler and faster, with higher sensitivity and lower cost. This provides a potential substitute for disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation based on accurate detection of H2O2.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Molecules from (Hemi)Cellulose: Computational Insights into Synthesis Routes, Fuel Properties, and Process Chemistry Metrics

Production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) can significantly reduce the aviation industry's carbon footprint. Current pathways that produce SAFs in significant volumes from ethanol and fatty acids can be costly, have a relatively high carbon intensity (CI), and impose sustainability challenges. There is a need for a diversified approach to reduce costs and utilize more sustainable feedstocks effectively. Here, we map out catalytic synthesis routes to convert furanics derived from the (hemi)cellulosic biomass to alkanes and cycloalkanes using automated network generation with RING and semiempirical thermochemistry calculations. We find >100 energy-dense C8-C16 alkane and cycloalkane SAF candidates over 300 synthesis routes; the top three are 2-methyl heptane, ethyl cyclohexane, and propyl cyclohexane, although these are relatively short. The shortest, least endothermic process chemistry involves C-C coupling, oxygen removal, and hydrogen addition, with dehydracyclization of the heterocyclic oxygens in the furan ring being the most endothermic step. The global warming potential due to hydrogen use and byproduct CO2 is typically 0.7-1 kg CO2/kg SAF product; the least CO2 emitting routes entail making larger molecules with fewer ketonization, hydrogenation, and hydrodeoxygenation steps. The large number of SAF candidates highlights the rich potential of furanics as a source of SAF molecules. However, the structural dissimilarity between reactants and target products precludes pathways with fewer than six synthetic steps, thus necessitating intensified processes, integrating multiple reaction steps in multifunctional catalytic reactors.

Angstrom-Scale 2D Channels Designed For Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Confronting the impending exhaustion of traditional energy, it is urgent to devise and deploy sustainable clean energy alternatives. Osmotic energy contained in the salinity gradient of the sea-river interface is an innovative, abundant, clean, and renewable osmotic energy that has garnered considerable attention in recent years. Inspired by the impressively intelligent ion channels in nature, the developed angstrom-scale 2D channels with simple fabrication process, outstanding design flexibility, and substantial charge density exhibit excellent energy conversion performance, opening up a new era for osmotic energy harvesting. However, this attractive research field remains fraught with numerous challenges, particularly due to the complexities associated with the regulation at angstrom scale. In this review, the latest advancements in the design of angstrom-scale 2D channels are primarily outlined for harvesting osmotic energy. Drawing upon the analytical framework of osmotic power generation mechanisms and the insights gleaned from the biomimetic intelligent devices, the design strategies are highlighted for high-performance angstrom channels in terms of structure, functionalization, and application, with a particular emphasis on ion selectivity and ion transport resistance. Finally, current challenges and future prospects are discussed to anticipate the emergence of more anomalous properties and disruptive technologies that can promote large-scale power generation.

Transport-Friendly Microstructure in SSC-MEA: Unveiling the SSC Ionomer-Based Membrane Electrode Assemblies for Enhanced Fuel Cell Performance

The significant role of the cathodic binder in modulating mass transport within the catalyst layer (CL) of fuel cells is essential for optimizing cell performance. This investigation focuses on enhancing the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) through the utilization of a short-side-chain perfluoro-sulfonic acid (SSC-PFSA) ionomer as the cathode binder, referred to as SSC-MEA. This study meticulously visualizes the distinctive interpenetrating networks of ionomers and catalysts, and explicitly clarifies the triple-phase interface, unveiling the transport-friendly microstructure and transport mechanisms inherent in SSC-MEA. The SSC-MEA exhibits advantageous microstructural features, including a better-connected ionomer network and well-organized hierarchical porous structure, culminating in superior mass transfer properties. Relative to the MEA bonded by long-side-chain perfluoro-sulfonic acid (LSC-PFSA) ionomer, noted as LSC-MEA, SSC-MEA exhibits a notable peak power density (1.23 W cm-2), efficient O2 transport, and remarkable proton conductivity (65% improvement) at 65 °C and 70% relativity humidity (RH). These findings establish crucial insights into the intricate morphology-transport-performance relationship in the CL, thereby providing strategic guidance for developing highly efficient MEA.

Synergistic Molecular Alignment and Dipole Polarization in Stretched Nafion/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Blend Membranes for High Proton Conduction in PEMFCs

The nanostructure of Nafion and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blend membranes is successfully aligned through a mechanical uniaxial stretching method. The phase-separated morphology of Nafion molecules distinctly forms hydrophilic proton channels with increased connectivity, resulting in enhanced proton conductivity. Additionally, the crystalline phase of PVDF molecules undergoes a successful transformation from the α- to β-phase during membrane stretching, demonstrating an alignment of fluorine and hydrogen atoms with a TTTT(trans) structure. The aligned nanostructure of the blend film, combined with the dipole polarization of the β-phase PVDF, synergistically enhances the proton conduction through the membrane for operating proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The controlled structures of the blend membranes are thoroughly investigated using atomic force microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. Furthermore, the improved in-plane proton conductivity facilitates increased proton conduction at the interface between the membrane and catalyst layer in the membrane-electrode assembly, ultimately enhancing the power generation of PEMFCs.

Proton Conduction in Chiral Molecular Assemblies of Azolium-Camphorsulfonate Salts

Chiral molecular assemblies have attracted considerable attention because of their interesting physical properties, such as spin-selective electron transport. Cation-anion salts of three azolium cations, imidazolium (HIm+), triazolium (HTrz+), and thiazolium (HThz+), in combination with a chiral camphorsulfonate (1S-CS-) and their racemic compounds (rac-CS-) were prepared and compared in terms of phase transitions, crystal structures, dynamics of constituent molecules, dielectric responses, and proton conductivities. The cation-anion crystals containing HIm+ showed no significant difference in proton conductivity between the homochiral and racemic crystals, whereas the HTrz+-containing crystals showed higher proton conductivity and lower activation energy in the homochiral form than in the racemic form. A two-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network consisting of HTrz+ and -SO3- groups and similar in-plane rotational motion was observed in both crystals; however, the HTrz+ cation in the homochiral crystal exhibited the rotational motion modulated with translational motion, whereas the HTrz+ cation in the racemic crystal exhibited almost steady in-plane rotational motion. The different motional degrees of freedom were confirmed by crystal structure analyses and temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric constants. In contrast, steady in-plane rotational motion with the thermally activated fluctuating motion of CS- was observed both in homochiral and racemic crystals containing HIm+, which averaged the motional space of protons resulting in similar dielectric responses and proton conductivities. The control of motional degrees of freedom in homochiral crystals affects the proton conductivity and is useful for the design of molecular proton conductors.

2D Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Tetraoxa[8]circulenes as Promising Cathode for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are the new generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Recently, two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) are attractive to serve as cathode materials of ZIBs due to their compositional diversity, abundant active sites, and excellent conductivity. Despite the growing interest in 2D c-MOFs, their application prospects are still to be explored. Herein, a tetraoxa[8]circulene (TOC) derivative with unique electronic structure and interesting redox-active property are synthesized to construct c-MOFs. A series of novel 2D c-MOFs (Cu-TOC, Zn-TOC and Mn-TOC) with different conductivities and packing modes are obtained by combining the linker tetraoxa[8]circulenes-2,3,5,6,8,9,11,12-octaol (8OH-TOC) and corresponding metal ions. Three c-MOFs all exhibit typical semiconducting properties, and Cu-TOC exhibits the highest electrical conductivity of 0.2 S cm-1 among them. Furthermore, their electrochemical performance as cathode materials for ZIBs have been investigated. They all performed high reversible capacity, decent cycle stability and excellent rate capability. This work reveals the key insights into the electrochemical application potential of 2D c-MOFs and advances their development as cathode materials in ZIBs.

Mobility and growth in confined spaces are important mechanisms for the establishment of Bacillus subtilis in the rhizosphere

The rhizosphere hosts complex and abundant microbiomes whose structure and composition are now well described by metagenomic studies. However, the dynamic mechanisms that enable micro-organisms to establish along a growing plant root are poorly characterized. Here, we studied how a motile bacterium utilizes the microhabitats created by soil pore space to establish in the proximity of plant roots. We have established a model system consisting of Bacillus subtilis and lettuce seedlings co-inoculated in transparent soil microcosms. We carried out live imaging experiments and developed image analysis pipelines to quantify the abundance of the bacterium as a function of time and position in the pore space. Results showed that the establishment of the bacterium in the rhizosphere follows a precise sequence of events where small islands of mobile bacteria were first seen forming near the root tip within the first 12-24 h of inoculation. Biofilm was then seen forming on the root epidermis at distances of about 700-1000 µm from the tip. Bacteria accumulated predominantly in confined pore spaces within 200 µm from the root or the surface of a particle. Using probabilistic models, we could map the complete sequence of events and propose a conceptual model of bacterial establishment in the pore space. This study therefore advances our understanding of the respective role of growth and mobility in the efficient colonization of bacteria in the rhizosphere.

Optical Characteristics of a New Molecular Complex: "Nafion-Colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS Nanocrystals"

Here, the optical properties of the Nafion polymer membrane containing colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals embedded by diffusion have been studied. The CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals have a core/shell/shell appearance. All experiments were carried out at room temperature (22 ± 2) °C. A toluene solution was used to provide mobility to the active sulfone groups of the Nafion membrane and to embed the nanocrystals inside the membrane. The diffusion process of colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals into Nafion proton exchange membrane has resulted in a new molecular complex "Nafion-colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals". The kinetics of the nanocrystals embedding into the membrane matrix was investigated using luminescence analysis and absorption spectroscopy techniques. The embedding rate of CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals into the Nafion polymer membrane was approximately 4·10-3 min-1. The presence of new luminescence centers in the membrane was proved independently by laser emission spectroscopy. The luminescence spectrum of the resulting molecular complex contains intensity maxima at wavelengths of 538, 588, 643 and 700 nm. The additional luminescence maximum observed at the 643 nm wavelength was not recorded in the original membrane, solvent or in the spectrum of the semiconductor nanoparticles. The luminescence maximum of the colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanocrystals was registered at a wavelength of 634 nm. The intensity of the luminescence spectrum of the membrane with embedded nanocrystals was found to be higher than the intensity of the secondary emission peak of the initial nanocrystals, which is important for the practical use of the "Nafion-colloidal nanocrystals" complex in optical systems. The lines contained in the luminescence spectrum of the membrane, which has been in solution with colloidal nanocrystals for a long time, registered upon its drying, show the kinetics of the formation of the molecular complex "Nafion membrane-nanocrystals". Colloidal nanocrystals located in the Nafion matrix represent an analog of a luminescent transducer.

Seawater electrolysis for fuels and chemicals production: fundamentals, achievements, and perspectives

Seawater electrolysis for the production of fuels and chemicals involved in onshore and offshore plants powered by renewable energies offers a promising avenue and unique advantages for energy and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, seawater electrolysis presents long-term challenges and issues, such as complex composition, potential side reactions, deposition of and poisoning by microorganisms and metal ions, as well as corrosion, thus hindering the rapid development of seawater electrolysis technology. This review focuses on the production of value-added fuels (hydrogen and beyond) and fine chemicals through seawater electrolysis, as a promising step towards sustainable energy development and carbon neutrality. The principle of seawater electrolysis and related challenges are first introduced, and the redox reaction mechanisms of fuels and chemicals are summarized. Strategies for operating anodes and cathodes including the development and application of chloride- and impurity-resistant electrocatalysts/membranes are reviewed. We comprehensively summarize the production of fuels and chemicals (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, sulfur, ammonia, etc.) at the cathode and anode via seawater electrolysis, and propose other potential strategies for co-producing fine chemicals, even sophisticated and electronic chemicals. Seawater electrolysis can drive the oxidation and upgrading of industrial pollutants or natural organics into value-added chemicals or degrade them into harmless substances, which would be meaningful for environmental protection. Finally, the perspective and prospects are outlined to address the challenges and expand the application of seawater electrolysis.

The Critical Analysis of Membranes toward Sustainable and Efficient Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are a promising technology for large-scale storage of electrical energy, combining safety, high capacity, ease of scalability, and prolonged durability; features which have triggered their early commercial implementation. Furthering the deployment of VRFB technologies requires addressing challenges associated to a pivotal component: the membrane. Examples include vanadium crossover, insufficient conductivity, escalated costs, and sustainability concerns related to the widespread adoption of perfluoroalkyl-based membranes, e.g., perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA). Herein, recent advances in high-performance and sustainable membranes for VRFB, offering insights into prospective research directions to overcome these challenges, are reviewed. The analysis reveals the disparities and trade-offs between performance advances enabled by PFSA membranes and composites, and the lack of sustainability in their final applications. The potential of PFSA-free membranes and present strategies to enhance their performance are discussed. This study delves into vital membrane parameters to enhance battery performance, suggesting protocols and design strategies to achieve high-performance and sustainable VRFB membranes.

Integrating microneedles and sensing strategies for diagnostic and monitoring applications: The state of the art

Microneedles (MNs) offer minimally-invasive access to interstitial fluid (ISF) - a potent alternative to blood in terms of monitoring physiological analytes. This property is particularly advantageous for the painless detection and monitoring of drugs and biomolecules. However, the complexity of the skin environment, coupled with the inherent nature of the analytes being detected and the inherent physical properties of MNs, pose challenges when conducting physiological monitoring using this fluid. In this review, we discuss different sensing mechanisms and highlight advancements in monitoring different targets, with a particular focus on drug monitoring. We further list the current challenges facing the field and conclude by discussing aspects of MN design which serve to enhance their performance when monitoring different classes of analytes.

The Hybridization of Polymers with Metal Oxide Clusters for the Design of Non-Fluorinated Proton Exchange Membranes

As the key component of various energy storage and conversion devices, proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have been attracting significant interest. However, their further development is limited by the high cost of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers and the poor stability of acid-dopped non-fluorinated polymers. Recently, a new group of PEMs has been developed by hybridizing polyoxometalates (POMs), a group of super acidic sub-nanoscale metal oxide clusters, with polymers. POMs can serve simultaneously as both proton sponges and stabilizing agents, and their complexation with polymers can further improve polymers' mechanical performance and processability. Enormous efforts have been focused on studying supramolecular complexation or covalent grafting of POMs with various polymers to optimize PEMs in terms of cost, mechanical properties and stabilities. This concept summarizes recent advances in this emerging field and outlines the design strategies and application perspectives employed for using POM-polymer hybrid materials as PEMs.

Supramolecular Modifying Nafion with Fluoroalkyl‐Functionalized Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters for High‐Selective Proton Conduction

Fluoroalkyl-grafted polyoxometalate nanoclusters are used as supramolecular additives to precisely modify the ionic domains of Nafion, which can increase the proton conductivity and selectivity simultaneously. The resulting hybrid membranes show significantly enhanced power density in fuel cells and improved energy efficiency in vanadium flow batteries.

Super-Transparent Soil for In Situ Observation of Root Phenotypes

Transparent soil (TS) presents immense potential for root phenotyping due to its ability to facilitate high-resolution imaging. However, challenges related to transparency, mechanical properties, and cost hinder its development. Herein, we introduce super-transparent soil (s-TS) prepared via the droplet method using low acyl gellan gum and hydroxyethyl cellulose crosslinked with magnesium ions. The refractive index of the hydroxyethyl cellulose solution (1.345) closely aligns with that of water (1.333) and the low acyl gellan gum solution (1.340), thereby significantly enhancing the transmittance of hydrogel-based transparent soil. Optimal transmittance (98.45%) is achieved with polymer concentrations ranging from 0.8 to 1.6 wt.% and ion concentrations between 0.01 and 0.09 mol·L-1. After 60 days of plant cultivation, s-TS maintains a transmittance exceeding 89.5%, enabling the detailed visualization of root growth dynamics. Furthermore, s-TS exhibits remarkable mechanical properties, withstanding a maximum compressive stress of 477 kPa and supporting a maximum load-bearing depth of 186 cm. This innovative approach holds promising implications for advanced root phenotyping studies, fostering the investigation of root heterogeneity and the development of selective expression under controlled conditions.

Nanosized Water Channels Associated with Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Fibrillar Arrangements Formed on Nafion Surfaces in Confined Regions

Herein, the origin of interfacial water nanosized channel distributions attached onto Nafion surfaces is investigated. The surface fibrillary hydrophilic and hydrophobic arrangements were observed on AFM images scanned on Nafion surfaces immersed in water. Then, by analyzing the force vs separation curves, it is possible to map arrays of interfacial water channels and their locations. Nafion surface profiles and the water interfacial patterns are then combined using this AFM technique. As there are no reported experimental techniques to measure water nanochannel cross sections, presented measurements report on their dimensions. Water nanochannels characterized by ε < 7 attached to hydrophilic fibrillary sections form aggregated water domains, a highly organized water structure compared with bulk water. Channels are attached to Nafion surface hydrophilic fibrillary domains in confined sites.

Fast proton conductors for low humidity: hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphonated polysilsesquioxanes with Al-O-P crosslinks

Proton-conducting polysilsesquioxane oligomers with core-shell structures consisting of hydrophilic silica-rich cores surrounded by an organic layer with sulfonic and phosphonic acid groups were synthesized. They were crosslinked by mixing with phosphoric acid and aluminum ions to form a hydrophilic Al-O-P framework. The resulting polymers were clear, uniform, flexible, and exhibited a high proton conductivity above 100 °C in non-humidified low-humidity air (∼22 mS cm-1 at 120 °C and ∼1%RH) because of their high sulfonic acid concentration and high water retention capability.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Analysis of Nafion-Containing Samples: Pitfalls, Protocols, and Perceptions of Physicochemical Properties

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is one of the most common techniques used to analyze the surface composition of catalysts and support materials used in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and electrolyzers, providing important insights for further improvement of their properties. Characterization of catalyst layers (CLs) is more challenging, which can be at least partially attributed to the instability of ionomer materials such as Nafion during measurements. This work explores the stability of Nafion during XPS measurements, illuminating and addressing Nafion degradation concerns. The extent of Nafion damage as a function of XPS instrumentation, measurement conditions, and sample properties was evaluated across multiple instruments. Results revealed that significant Nafion damage to the ion-conducting sulfonic acid species (>50% loss in sulfur signal) may occur in a relatively short time frame (tens of minutes) depending on the exact nature of the sample and XPS instrument. This motivated the development and validation of a multipoint XPS data acquisition protocol that minimizes Nafion damage, resulting in reliable data acquisition by avoiding significant artifacts from Nafion instability. The developed protocol was then used to analyze both thin film ionomer samples and Pt/C-based CLs. Comparison of PEM fuel cell CLs to Nafion thin films revealed several changes in Nafion spectral features attributed to charge transfer due to interaction with conductive catalyst and support species. This study provides a method to reliably characterize ionomer-containing samples, facilitating fundamental studies of the catalyst-ionomer interface and more applied investigations of structure-processing-performance correlations in PEM fuel cell and electrolyzer CLs.

Operando Scanning Small-/Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells: Investigation of Catalyst Layer Saturation and Membrane Hydration- Capabilities and Challenges

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells are an essential technology for future local emission-free mobility. One of the critical challenges for thriving commercialization is water management in the cells. We propose small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering as a suitable diagnostic tool to quantify the liquid saturation in the catalyst layer and determine the hydration of the ion-conducting membrane in real operating conditions. The challenges that may occur in operando data collection are described in detail─separation of the anode and cathode, cell alignment to the beam, X-ray radiation damage, and the possibility of membrane swelling. A synergistic development of experimental setup, data acquisition, and data interpretation circumvents the major challenges and leads to practical and reliable insights.

Synthesis and proton-conductive behaviour of two MOFs with covalently bonded imidazoles in the channels

Immobilization of imidazole molecules as proton carriers into MOFs to facilitate proton conduction is a general strategy for developing high proton conductive materials. Herein, we designed two imidazole substituted phthalic acid ligands and constructed two novel MOFs, {[Zr6(OH)16(H3L1)4]Cl8·20H2O}n [Zr-MOF; H3L1 = 2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl) methylaminoterephthalic acid] and {Gd(HCOO)(H2L2)2}n [Gd-MOF; H3L2 = 5-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylaminoisophthalic acid] and fully studied their porous nature, stability and water-assisted proton conduction. The resulting Zr-MOF exhibits a high proton conductivity of 1.82 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 98% RH and 80 °C, while Gd-MOF has a proton conductivity of 3.01 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 98% RH and 60 °C.

Surface proton hopping conduction mechanism dominant polymer electrolytes created by self-assembly of bicontinuous cubic liquid crystals

For the development of the next generation of fuel cells, it is essential to create an innovative design principle of polymer electrolytes that is beyond extension of the existing strategy. In the present study, we focused on the surface hopping proton conduction mechanism where an activation energy for proton conduction is greatly reduced by decreasing the distance between SO3- groups. Our gyroid nanostructured polymer film (Film-G), with a hydrophilic surface where the SO3- groups are aligned densely and precisely, shows high proton conductivity of the order of 10-2 S cm-1 when the water content is about 15 wt%. We reveal that the high proton conductivity of Film-G is attributed to the exhibition of an extremely-fast surface hopping conduction mechanism due to the reduced activation energy barrier along the gyroid minimal surface. This finding should introduce a game-changing novel opportunity in polymer electrolyte design.

Paper-based colorimetric hyperammonemia sensing by controlled oxidation of plasmonic silver nanoparticles

High concentrations of ammonia in the human body can occur due to a wide variety of underlying causes such as liver cirrhosis and the symptoms of high ammonia concentrations are diffuse and hard to diagnose. The measurement of blood ammonia levels is an important diagnostic tool but is challenging to perform at the patient's bedside. Here, we present a plasmonic Ag nanoparticle-based ammonia sensor which provides a colorimetric optical readout and does not require specialised equipment. This is achieved using plasmonic Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles with the sensing mechanism that in the presence of OCl- they rapidly degrade reducing their plasmonic extinction and losing their characteristic colour. However, if ammonia is also present in the system, it neutralises the OCl- and thus the silver nanoparticles retain their plasmonic colour as can be measured by the naked eye or using a spectrometer. This sensing was further developed to enable measurements with animal serum as well as a implementing a facile "dip-stick" style paper-based sensor.

Commercial Nafion Membranes for Harvesting Osmotic Energy from Proton Gradients that Exceed the Commercial Goal of 5.0 W/m2

Osmotic energy from proton gradients in industrial acidic wastewater can be harvested and converted to electricity through membranes, making it a renewable and sustainable power source. However, the currently designed membranes for harvesting proton gradient energy in acidic wastewater cannot simultaneously achieve excellent chemical/mechanical stability and high power density under a large-scale area and require high cost and complex operations. Here, we demonstrate that commercial Nafion membranes with high chemical/mechanical stability and proton transport selectivity can generate a power density of 5.1 W/m2 for harvesting osmotic energy from proton gradients under a test area of 0.2 mm2, which exceeds the commercial goal of 5.0 W/m2. Even under a test area of 12.5 mm2, a power density of 2.1 W/m2 can be achieved under a strong acid condition. In addition, the heat can greatly promote proton transport, and the power density is increased, i.e., 8.1 W/m2 at 333 K (5.1 W/m2 at 293 K) under a test area of 0.2 mm2. By matching membranes with ion selectivity, our work demonstrates the potential of Nafion membranes for harvesting proton gradient energy in acidic wastewater and provides an approach for large-scale conversion of osmotic energy.

Differential Impact of Surface Conduction and Electroosmotic Flow on Ion Transport Enhancement by Microscale Auxiliary Structures

Our research investigates the impact of auxiliary structures on ion transport in electrochemical systems such as batteries and microscale desalination units, whose importance for sustainable development has increased dramatically in recent decades. The electrochemical systems typically feature ion-selective surfaces, such as electrodes and ion exchange membranes, where ion depletion can cause performance issues including metal dendrite formation and flow instability. Recent research has shown that auxiliary structures in these electrochemical systems can enhance ion transfer near ion-selective surfaces, thereby resolving the instability problem and improving the energy conversion efficiency of the system. Our study leverages recent advancements in nanoscale electrokinetics to model these auxiliary structures as pillar arrays near an ion exchange membrane in a microchannel. We examine how these structures enhance ion transports relative to the characteristic length scale of microchannel depth and pillars' proximity to the ion-selective surface. Results show that the effect of the pillars varies significantly with their placement. Specifically, in deeper microchannels, where electrokinetic convection is stronger, the closer the auxiliary structure is to the ion-selective membrane, the better the ion transfer. However, in the thinner microchannel, the proximity of the auxiliary structure to the ion selective membrane has a less significant correlation with the ion transfer. Therefore, this finding highlights the importance of spatial arrangement of the auxiliary structures in improving the performance of electrochemical devices. Conclusively, this study can help to better understand energy conversion systems such as fuel cells, salinity gradient power generation systems, and electrochemical desalination systems, where auxiliary structures can be used in the vicinity of ion-selective surfaces. Especially, our fundamental electrokinetic study provides an effective means for designing the efficient electrochemical platforms utilizing micro/nanofluidics.

Evaluating the Durability of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Membranes in Fuel Cells Using Combined Open-Circuit Voltage-Accelerated Stability Testing

This study evaluates the chemical and mechanical durability of membranes used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, highlighting the essential role of electrochemical tests in understanding the relationship between durability and performance. Our methodology integrates various electrochemical evaluation techniques to assess the degradation of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes. The results highlight the considerable improvement in the chemical and mechanical durability of annealed 3M PFSA-reinforced composite membranes (RCMs) compared with their non-annealed counterparts and other membrane types, indicating their superior resilience under challenging conditions. Moreover, the results of using a combined open-circuit voltage-accelerated stability testing protocol demonstrate that annealed 3M PFSA RCMs exhibit enhanced resilience, reaching 18,000 cycles before failure, considerably outperforming NR 211 (5000 cycles) and other membranes. In addition, membrane deterioration over time can be precisely measured by interpreting electrochemical indicators (electrochemically active surface area, circuit resistance, high-frequency resistance, and proton resistance). This approach provides a clear relationship between electrochemical data and durability, offering a comprehensive understanding of how different membranes withstand operational stresses.

Applications of Chipless RFID Humidity Sensors to Smart Packaging Solutions

Packaging solutions have recently evolved to become smart and intelligent thanks to technologies such as RFID tracking and communication systems, but the integration of sensing functionality in these systems is still under active development. In this paper, chipless RFID humidity sensors suitable for smart packaging are proposed together with a novel strategy to tune their performances and their operating range. The sensors are flexible, fast, low-cost and easy to fabricate and can be read wirelessly. The sensitivity and the humidity range where they can be used are adjustable by changing one of the sensor's structural parameters. Moreover, these sensors are proposed as double parameter sensors, using both the frequency shift and the intensity variation of the resonance peak for the measure of the relative humidity. The results show that the sensitivity can vary remarkably among the sensors proposed, together with the operative range. The sensor suitability in two specific smart packaging applications is discussed. In the first case, a threshold sensor in the low-humidity range for package integrity verification is analyzed, and in the second case, a more complex measurement of humidity in non-hermetic packages is investigated. The discussion shows that the sensor configuration can easily be adapted to the different application needs.

Fabrication of -SO3H-functionalized polyphosphazene-reinforced proton conductive matrix-mixed membranes

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have emerged as very promising membranes for automotive applications because of their notable proton conductivity at low temperatures. These membranes find extensive utilization in fuel cells. Several polymeric materials have been used, but their application is constrained by their expense and intricate synthetic processes. Affordable and efficient synthetic methods for polymeric materials are necessary for the widespread commercial use of PEM technology. The polymeric combination of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4-diamino-2,2-biphenyldisulfonic acid facilitated the synthesis of PP-(PhSO3H)2, a polyphosphazene with built-in -SO3H moieties. Characterization revealed that it was a porous organic polymer with high stability. PP-(PhSO3H)2 exhibited a proton conductivity of up to 8.24 × 10-2 S cm-1 (SD = ±0.031) at 353 K under 98% relative humidity (RH), which was more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of its -SO3H-free analogue, PP-(Ph)2 (2.32 × 10-4 S cm-1) (SD = ±0.019) under identical conditions. Therefore, for application in a PEM fuel cell, PP-(PhSO3H)2-based matrix-mixed membranes (PP-(PhSO3H)2-MMMs) were fabricated by mixing them with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in various ratios. The proton conductivity could reach up to 6.11 × 10-2 S cm-1 (SD = ±0.0048) at 353 K and 98%RH, when the weight ratio of PP-(PhSO3H)2 : PAN was 3 : 1, the value of which was comparable with those of commercially available electrolytes used in PEM fuel cells. PP-(PhSO3H)2-MMM (3 : 1) had an extended lifetime of reusability. Using phosphazene and bisulfonated multiple-amine modules as precursors, we demonstrated that a porous organic polymer with a highly effective proton-conductive matrix-mixed membrane for PEM fuel cells could be produced readily by an intuitive polymeric reaction.

Predicting Diffusion Coefficients in Nafion Membranes during the Soaking Process Using a Machine Learning Approach

Nafion, a versatile polymer used in electrochemistry and membrane technologies, exhibits complex behaviors in saline environments. This study explores Nafion membrane's IR spectra during soaking and subsequent drying processes in salt solutions at various concentrations. Utilizing the principles of Fick's second law, diffusion coefficients for these processes are derived via exponential approximation. By harnessing machine learning (ML) techniques, including the optimization of neural network hyperparameters via a genetic algorithm (GA) and leveraging various regressors, we effectively pinpointed the optimal model for predicting diffusion coefficients. Notably, for the prediction of soaking coefficients, our model is composed of layers with 64, 64, 32, and 16 neurons, employing ReLU, ELU, sigmoid, and ELU activation functions, respectively. Conversely, for drying coefficients, our model features two hidden layers with 16 and 12 neurons, utilizing sigmoid and ELU activation functions, respectively.

Effect of ionic groups on the morphology and transport properties in a novel perfluorinated ionomer containing sulfonic and phosphonic acid groups: a molecular dynamics study

Combining the phosphonic acid group with the sulfonic acid group in PEMs has been shown to be an effective strategy for improving the fuel cell performance. However, the interplay of two different ionic groups and the resulting effect on the membrane properties have not been fully elucidated. Here, we used classical molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the morphologies, transport properties and effects of ionic groups in a novel perfluorinated PEM containing two ionic groups (PFSA-PFPA) in comparison to the corresponding homopolymers. Phase separations between hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains are confirmed in these PEMs and result from the evolution of water clusters formed around the ionic groups. The combination of both ionic groups brings a complicated morphological feature in PFSA-PFPA, with near-cylindrical aqueous domains of large length scales interconnected by tortuous domains of small sizes. And we found that the self-diffusion coefficients of water molecules are strongly related to morphologies, with the water transport in PFSA-PFPA lying between two analogous homopolymers. At the molecular level, we found that the sulfonic and phosphonic acid groups have distinct effects on the coordination behaviors and the dynamics of water molecules and hydronium ions. Strong electrostatic interactions lead to compact coordination structures and sluggish dynamics of hydronium ions around phosphonic acid groups, which determine the morphological evolution and transport properties in PFSA-PFPA. Our study affords insights into the relationship between molecular characteristics and transport properties bridged by phase-separated morphologies in a novel PEM containing both sulfonic acid and phosphonic acid groups, which deepens the understanding of the interplay between two ionic groups and may inspire the rational design of high-performance PEMs.

PEDOT:Nafion for Highly Efficient Supercapacitors

Supercapacitors offer notable properties as energy storage devices, providing high power density and fast charging and discharging while maintaining a long cycling lifetime. Although poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) has become a gold standard among organic electronics materials, researchers are still investigating ways to further improve its capacitive characteristics. In this work, we introduced Nafion as an alternative polymeric counterion to PSS to form highly capacitive PEDOT/Nafion; its advantageous supercapacitive properties were further improved by treatment with either dimethyl sulfoxide or ethylene glycol. Accordingly, electrochemical characterization of PEDOT/Nafion films revealed their high areal capacitance (22 mF cm-2 at 10 mV/s) and low charge transfer resistance (∼380 Ω), together with excellent volumetric capacitance (74 F cm-3), Coulombic efficiency (99%), and an energy density of 23.1 ± 1.5 mWh cm-3 at a power density of 0.5 W cm-3, resulting from a more effective ion diffusion inside the conductive film, as confirmed by the results of spectroscopic studies. A proof-of-concept symmetric supercapacitor based on PEDOT/Nafion was characterized with a specific capacitance of approximately 15.7 F g-1 and impressive long-term stability (Coulombic efficiency ∼99% and capacitance ∼98.7% after 1000 charging/discharging cycles), overperforming the device based on PEDOT/PSS.

Analysis of proton exchange membranes for fuel cells based on statistical theory and data mining

Fuel cells (FCs) have attracted widespread attention as a highly efficient, clean, and renewable energy conversion technology. Proton exchange membrane (PEM), as one of the core components of FCs, plays a crucial role, and a comprehensive summary of its development is essential for promoting rapid progress in the field of sustainable energy. This article provides a comprehensive review of the development status and research trends of PEMs over the past twenty-eight years, based on statistical analysis and data mining techniques. Price, sustainability, stability, and compatibility issues are the main challenges faced by current PEMs used in FCs research. The current research focuses mainly on the characterization, performance optimization, enhancement mechanisms, and applications of PEMs in FCs. This review provides a systematic summary of PEM materials, serving as a valuable reference for the development, application, and promotion of new PEM materials in FCs.

A High-Proton Conductivity All-Biomass Proton Exchange Membrane Enabled by Adenine and Thymine Modified Cellulose Nanofibers

Nanocellulose fiber materials were considered promising biomaterials due to their excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, high hydrophilicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, their low proton conductivity significantly limited their application as proton exchange membranes. The methods previously reported to increase their proton conductivity often introduced non-biodegradable groups and compounds, which resulted in the loss of the basic advantages of this natural polymer in terms of biodegradability. In this work, a green and sustainable strategy was developed to prepare cellulose-based proton exchange membranes that could simultaneously meet sustainability and high-performance criteria. Adenine and thymine were introduced onto the surface of tempo-oxidized nanocellulose fibers (TOCNF) to provide many transition sites for proton conduction. Once modified, the proton conductivity of the TOCNF membrane increased by 31.2 times compared to the original membrane, with a specific surface area that had risen from 6.1 m²/g to 86.5 m²/g. The wet strength also increased. This study paved a new path for the preparation of environmentally friendly membrane materials that could replace the commonly used non-degradable ones, highlighting the potential of nanocellulose fiber membrane materials in sustainable applications such as fuel cells, supercapacitors, and solid-state batteries.

"All in One" Strategy for Achieving Superprotonic Conductivity by Incorporating Strong Acids into a Robust Imidazole-Linked Covalent Organic Framework

The fabrication of solid-state proton-conducting electrolytes possessing both high performance and long-life reusability is significant but challenging. An "all-in-one" composite, H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H, including imidazole, sulfonic acid, and phosphoric acid, which are essential for proton conduction, was successfully prepared by chemical post-modification and physical loading in the rationally pre-synthesized imidazole-based nanoporous covalent organic framework (COF), PyTFB-1. The resultant H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H exhibits superhigh proton conductivity with its value even highly up to 1.15 × 10-1 S cm-1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity (RH), making it one of the highest COF-based composites reported so far under the same conditions. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations further confirmed that the imidazole and sulfonic acid groups have strong interactions with the H3PO4 molecules and the synergistic effect of these three groups dramatically improves the proton conductivity properties of H3PO4@PyTFB-1-SO3H. This work demonstrated that by aggregating multiple proton carriers into one composite, effective proton-conducting electrolyte can be feasibly achieved.

Thermodynamically Stable Functionalization of Microporous Aromatic Frameworks with Sulfonic Acid Groups by Inserting Methylene Spacers

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) are an auspicious class of materials that allow for the introduction of sulfonic acid groups at the aromatic core units by post-synthetic modification. This makes PAFs promising for proton-exchange materials. However, the limited thermal stability of sulfonic acid groups attached to aromatic cores prevents high-temperature applications. Here, we present a framework based on PAF-303 where the acid groups were added as methylene sulfonic acid side chains in a two-step post-synthetic route (SMPAF-303) via the intermediate chloromethylene PAF (ClMPAF-303). Elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize both frameworks and corroborate the successful attachment of the side chains. The resulting framework SMPAF-303 features high thermal stability and an ion-exchange capacity of about 1.7 mequiv g-1. The proton conductivity depends strongly on the adsorbed water level. It reaches from about 10-7 S cm-1 for 33% RH to about 10-1 S cm-1 for 100% RH. We attribute the strong change to a locally alternating polarity of the inner surfaces. The latter introduces bottleneck effects for the water molecule and oxonium ion diffusion at lower relative humidities, due to electrolyte clustering. When the pores are completely filled with water, these bottlenecks vanish, leading to an unhindered electrolyte diffusion through the framework, explaining the conductivity rise.

Magnetoelectrocatalysis: Evidence from the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rates are higher where magnetic gradients are established at electrode surfaces. In comparison of literature data for metals with comparable work functions, we note 1000× higher rates for paramagnetic metals than diamagnetic metals. With unpaired electron spins, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic metals establish interfacial magnetic gradients. At diamagnetic electrodes, gradients are induced by addition of magnetized microparticles. Onset of hydrogen evolution for magnetized γ-Fe2O3 microparticles in Nafion on diamagnetic glassy carbon electrodes is lower by 190 mV (-18 kJ mol-1) relative to demagnetized microparticles. Chemically the same as demagnetized particles, the physical distinction of magnetic field and gradient at magnetized microparticles increases electron transfer rate. For magnetized Fe3O4 microparticles, the onset is lower by 280 mV (-27 kJ mol-1). Paramagnetic platinum electrodes are unaffected by addition of magnetized microparticles. Magnetoelectrocatalysis is established by magnetic gradients.

Supramolecular Complexation of Metal Oxide Cluster and Non-Fluorinated Polymer for Large-Scale Fabrication of Proton Exchange Membranes for High-Power-Density Fuel Cells

Cost-effective, non-fluorinated polymer proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging hydrogen fuel cells (FCs) technology; however, their low proton conductivities and poor chemical and dimension stabilities hinder their further development as alternatives to commercial Nafion®. Here, we report the inorganic-organic hybridization strategy by facilely complexing commercial polymers, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), with inorganic molecular nanoparticles, H3 PW12 O40 (PW) via supramolecular interaction. The strong affinity among them endows the obtained nanocomposites amphiphilicity and further lead to phase separation for bi-continuous structures with both inter-connected proton transportation channels and robust polymer scaffold, enabling high proton conductivities, mechanical/dimension stability and barrier performance, and the H2 /O2 FCs equipped with the composite PEM show promising power densities and long-term stability. Interestingly, the hybrid PEM can be fabricated continuously in large scale at challenging ~10 μm thickness via typical tape casting technique originated from their facile complexing strategy and the hybrids' excellent mechanical properties. This work not only provides potential material systems for commercial PEMs, but also raises interest for the research on hybrid composites for PEMs.

An electrospun three-layer nanofibrous membrane-based in situ gel separator for efficient lithium-organic batteries

An in situ gel separator based on an electrospun three-layer nanofibrous membrane (PSE11-Gel) is developed for high-performance lithium-organic batteries (LOBs). The highly efficient shuttle effect inhibition of organic cathode molecules or lithiated intermediates has been demonstrated for PSE11-Gel to realize high-capacity stable LOBs.

A Molecular-Sieving Interphase Towards Low-Concentrated Aqueous Sodium-Ion Batteries

Aqueous sodium-ion batteries are known for poor rechargeability because of the competitive water decomposition reactions and the high electrode solubility. Improvements have been reported by salt-concentrated and organic-hybridized electrolyte designs, however, at the expense of cost and safety. Here, we report the prolonged cycling of ASIBs in routine dilute electrolytes by employing artificial electrode coatings consisting of NaX zeolite and NaOH-neutralized perfluorinated sulfonic polymer. The as-formed composite interphase exhibits a molecular-sieving effect jointly played by zeolite channels and size-shrunken ionic domains in the polymer matrix, which enables high rejection of hydrated Na+ ions while allowing fast dehydrated Na+ permeance. Applying this coating to electrode surfaces expands the electrochemical window of a practically feasible 2 mol kg-1 sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate aqueous electrolyte to 2.70 V and affords Na2MnFe(CN)6//NaTi2(PO4)3 full cells with an unprecedented cycling stability of 94.9% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 C. Combined with emerging electrolyte modifications, this molecular-sieving interphase brings amplified benefits in long-term operation of ASIBs.

Covalent Benzenesulfonic Functionalization of a Graphene Nanopore for Enhanced and Selective Proton Transport

A fundamental understanding of proton transport through graphene nanopores, defects, and vacancies is essential for advancing two-dimensional proton exchange membranes (PEMs). This study employs ReaxFF molecular dynamics, metadynamics, and density functional theory to investigate the enhanced proton transport through a graphene nanopore. Covalently functionalizing the nanopore with a benzenesulfonic group yields consistent improvements in proton permeability, with a lower activation barrier (≈0.15 eV) and increased proton selectivity over sodium cations. The benzenesulfonic functionality acts as a dynamic proton shuttle, establishing a favorable hydrogen-bonding network and an efficient proton transport channel. The model reveals an optimal balance between proton permeability and selectivity, which is essential for effective proton exchange membranes. Notably, the benzenesulfonic-functionalized graphene nanopore system achieves a theoretically estimated proton diffusion coefficient comparable to or higher than the current state-of-the-art PEM, Nafion. Ergo, the benzenesulfonic functionalization of graphene nanopores, firmly holds promise for future graphene-based membrane development in energy conversion devices.

Quantitative Understanding of Ionic Channel Network Variation in Nafion with Hydration Using Current Sensing Atomic Force Microscopy

Proton exchange membranes are an essential component of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Their performance is directly related to the development of ionic channel networks through hydration. Current sensing atomic force microscopy (CSAFM) can map the local conductance and morphology of a sample surface with sub-nano resolution simultaneously by applying a bias voltage between the conducting tip and sample holder. In this study, the ionic channel network variation of Nafion by hydration has been quantitatively characterized based on the basic principles of electrodynamics and CSAFM. A nano-sized PEMFC has been created using a Pt-coated tip of CSAFM and one side Pt-coated Nafion, and studied under different relative humidity (RH) conditions. The results have been systematically analyzed. First, the morphology of PEMFC under each RH has been studied using line profile and surface roughness. Second, the CSAFM image has been analyzed statistically through the peak value and full-width half-maximum of the histograms. Third, the number of protons moving through the ionic channel network (NPMI) has been derived and used to understand ionic channel network variation by hydration. This study develops a quantitative method to comprehend variations in the ionic channel network by calculating the movement of protons into the ionic channel network based on CSAFM images. To verify the method, a comparison is made between the NPMI and the changes in proton conductivity under different RH conditions and it reveals a good agreement. This developed method can offer a quantitative approach for characterizing the morphological structure of PEM. Also, it can provide a quantitative tool for interpretating CSAFM images.

Superprotonic Conductivity in a Metalloporphyrin-Based SMOF (Supramolecular Metal-Organic Framework)

Metal-organic frameworks and supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) exhibit great potential for a broad range of applications taking advantage of the high surface area and pore sizes and tunable chemistry. In particular, metalloporphyrin-based MOFs and SMOFs are becoming of great importance in many fields due to the bioessential functions of these macrocycles that are being mimicked. On the other hand, during the last years, proton-conducting materials have aroused much interest, and those presenting high conductivity values are potential candidates to play a key role in some solid-state electrochemical devices such as batteries and fuel cells. In this way, using metalloporphyrins as building units we have obtained a new crystalline material with formula [H(bipy)]2[(MnTPPS)(H2O)2]·2bipy·14H2O, where bipy is 4,4'-bipyidine and TPPS4- is the meso-tetra(4-sulfonatephenyl) porphyrin. The crystal structure shows a zig-zag water chain along the [100] direction located between the sulfonate groups of the porphyrin. Taking into account those structural features, the compound was tested for proton conduction by complex electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The as-obtained conductivity is 1 × 10-2 S·cm-1 at 40 °C and 98% relative humidity, which is a remarkably high value.

Investigating Electrode-Ionomer Interface Phenomena for Electrochemical Energy Applications

The endeavor to develop high-performance electrochemical energy applications has underscored the growing importance of comprehending the intricate dynamics within an electrode's structure and their influence on overall performance. This review investigates the complexities of electrode-ionomer interactions, which play a critical role in optimizing electrochemical reactions. Our examination encompasses both microscopic and meso/macro scale functions of ionomers at the electrode-ionomer interface, providing a thorough analysis of how these interactions can either enhance or impede surface reactions. Furthermore, this review explores the broader-scale implications of ionomer distribution within porous electrodes, taking into account factors like ionomer types, electrode ink formulation, and carbon support interactions. We also present and evaluate state-of-the-art techniques for investigating ionomer distribution, including electrochemical methods, imaging, modeling, and analytical techniques. Finally, the performance implications of these phenomena are discussed in the context of energy conversion devices. Through this comprehensive exploration of intricate interactions, this review contributes to the ongoing advancements in the field of energy research, ultimately facilitating the design and development of more efficient and sustainable energy devices.

How fork-length asymmetry affects solvent connectivity and diffusion in grafted polymeric model membranes

The hydrophilic pore morphology and solvent diffusion within model (amphiphilic) polymer membranes are simulated by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD). The polymers are composed of a backbone of 18 covalently bonded A beads to which at regular intervals side chains are attached. The side chains are composed of linear Ap chains (i.e., -A1-A2…Ap) from which two branches, [AsC] and [ArC], split off (s ≤ r). C beads serve as functionalized hydrophilic pendent sites. The branch lengths (s + 1 and r + 1) are varied. Five repeat unit designs (with general formula A3[Ap[AsC][ArC]]) are considered: A2[A3C][A3C] (symmetric branching), A2[A2C][A4C], A2[AC][A5C], A2[C][A6C] (highly asymmetric branching), and A4[AC][A3C]. The distribution of water (W) and W diffusion through nanophase segregated hydrophilic pores is studied. For similar primary length p, an increase in side chain symmetry favors hydrophilic pore connectivity and long-range water transport. C beads located on the longer [ArC] branches reveal the highest C bead mobility and are more strongly associated with water than the C beads on the shorter [AsC] branches. The connectivity of hydrophilic (W and W + C) phases through mapped replica of selected snapshots obtained from Monte Carlo tracer diffusion simulations is in line with trends found from the W bead diffusivities during DPD simulations. The diffusive pathways for protons (H+) in proton exchange membranes and for hydronium (OH-) in anion exchange membranes are the same as for solvents. Therefore, control of the side chain architecture is an interesting design parameter for optimizing membrane conductivities.

Proton-Conducting Membranes from Polyphenylenes Containing Armstrong's Acid

This study demonstrates the use of 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid as a suitable building block for the efficient and economic preparation of alternating sulfonated polyphenylenes with high ion-exchange capacity (IEC) via Suzuki polycondensation. Key to large molar masses is the use of an all-meta-terphenyl comonomer instead of m-phenyl, the latter giving low molar masses and brittle materials. A protection/deprotection strategy for base-stable neopentyl sulfonates is successfully implemented to improve the solubility and molar mass of the polymers. Solution-based deprotection of polyphenylene neopentyl sulfonates at 150 °C in dimethylacetamide eliminates isopentylene quantitatively, resulting in membranes with high IEC (2.93 mequiv/g) and high proton conductivity (σ = 138 mS/cm). Water solubility of these copolymers with high IEC requires thermal cross-linking to prevent their dissolution under operating conditions. By balancing the temperature and time of the cross-linking process, water uptake can be restricted to 50 wt %, retaining an IEC of 2.33 mequiv/g and a conductivity of 85 mS/cm. Chemical stability is addressed by treatment of the membranes under Fenton's conditions and by considering barrier heights for desulfonation using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results suggest that 1,5-disulfonated naphthalenes are at least as stable as sulfonated polyphenylenes against desulfonation.

Controllable Multimodal Actuation in Fully Printed Ultrathin Micro-Patterned Electrochemical Actuators

Submillimeter or micrometer scale electrically controlled soft actuators have immense potential in microrobotics, haptics, and biomedical applications. However, the fabrication of miniaturized and micropatterned open-air soft actuators has remained challenging. In this study, we demonstrate the microfabrication of trilayer electrochemical actuators (ECAs) through aerosol jet printing (AJP), a rapid prototyping method with a 10 μm lateral resolution. We make fully printed 1000 × 5000 × 12 μm3 ultrathin ECAs, each of which comprises a Nafion electrolyte layer sandwiched between two poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) electrode layers. The ECAs actuate due to the electric-field-driven migration of hydrated protons. Due to the thinness that gives rise to a low proton transport length and a low flexural rigidity, the printed ECAs can operate under low voltages (∼0.5 V) and have a relatively fast response (∼seconds). We print all the components of an actuator that consists of two individually controlled submillimeter segments and demonstrate its multimodal actuation. The convenience, versatility, rapidity, and low cost of our microfabrication strategy promise future developments in integrating arrays of intricately patterned individually controlled soft microactuators on compact stretchable electronic circuits.

Collective motion of Nafion-based micromotors in water

Ion exchange is one of the most interesting processes occurring at the interface between aqueous solutions and polymers, such as the well-known Nafion. If the exchanged ions have different diffusion coefficients, this interchange generates local electric fields which can be harnessed to drive fluid motion. In this work, we show how it is possible to design and fabricate self-propelling microswimmers based on Nafion, driven by ion-exchange, and fueled by innocuous salts. These Nafion micromotors are made using colloidal lithography by micro/nanostructuring Nafion in the form of asymmetric rods. These microswimmers exhibit fascinating collective motion in water driven by the interplay of their self-generated chemical/electric fields and their capability to pump matter nearby towards the collective motile structure. The pumping activity of the microswimmers induces the formation of growing mobile clusters, whose velocity increases with size. Such dynamic structures are able to trap nearby micro/nano-objects while purifying the liquid, which acts both as the transport media and as fuel. Such phenomenology opens the door to potential applications in water remediation that are currently under development.

Acidified Nitrogen Self-Doped Porous Carbon with Superprotonic Conduction for Applications in Solid-State Proton Battery

Solid proton electrolytes play a crucial role in various electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. However, the development of fast proton conducting solid proton electrolytes at ambient conditions remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel acidified nitrogen self-doped porous carbon material is presented that demonstrates exceptional superprotonic conduction for applications in solid-state proton battery. The material, designated as MSA@ZIF-8-C, is synthesized through the acidification of nitrogen-doped porous carbon, specifically by integrating methanesulfonic acid (MSA) into zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived nitrogen self-doped porous carbons (ZIF-8-C). This study reveals that MSA@ZIF-8-C achieves a record-high proton conductivity beyond 10-2  S cm-1 at ambient condition, along with good long-term stability, positioning it as a cutting-edge alternative solid proton electrolyte to the default aqueous H2 SO4 electrolyte in proton batteries.

Screen-Printed Sensors Modified with Nafion and Mesoporous Carbon for Electrochemical Detection of Lead in Blood

Lead (Pb) has long been acknowledged as a systemic toxicant, with pronounced health impacts observed even at low exposure levels, particularly in children. Adverse effects include diminished cognitive function, altered behavior, and developmental delays. Consequently, it is imperative to conduct regular monitoring of Blood Lead Levels (BLLs). In this work, we report on an electrochemical sensor based on screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) coated with Nafion and mesoporous carbon (MC). The sensor system uses simple sample preparation (acidification and dilution of whole blood), minimal sample volume (a few blood drops, 200 μl), and swift time-to-results (1 h). A limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.3 μg dL-1 Pb was achieved in whole blood. To demonstrate the practical utility of our sensor system, we evaluated its performance in the analysis of blood samples collected from children (n = 25). Comparative analysis with the laboratory-based gold standard method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrated approximately 77% accuracy and 94% precision. We anticipate that our approach will serve as a valuable tool for more frequent BLL monitoring, particularly in communities where access to laboratory testing is impractical or expensive.

Optofluidic tunable filters using ionic liquid electrolyte capacitors

Tunable optical filter is a basic component for most optical systems. This study reports a unique design of Fabry-Pérot (FP) tunable filter by using an ionic liquid solution. The tunable filter consists of two neighboring regions: capacitor region and FP region. The former is in the form of electrolyte capacitor and the latter remains transparent as an FP cavity for light transmission. When the capacitor region is applied with a bias voltage, it attracts the ions from the FP region and thus reduces the ion concentration of the FP region, resulting in a change of the refractive index and eventually a shift of transmission peak of the FP cavity. Among four electrolyte solutions studied, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM-PF6) exhibits the best overall performance, such as low insertion loss (3.2 dB), large side mode suppression ratio (23 dB) and high stability (drift <0.2 nm). Additionally, a wavelength tuning of 0.17 nm/V is achieved over 0-17 V, providing a tunable range of 3 nm. This device features low bias voltage, no mechanical movement, easy fabrication and seamless integration with microfluidics systems, and may find potential applications in spectral analyzers and lab-on-a-chip biosensing systems.
