Controlling the synthesis and assembly of silver nanostructures for plasmonic applications

Rapid detection of tebuconazole based on hydrogel SERS chips

Tebuconazole is one of the most commonly used fungicides in agricultural production, that has the merits of highly effectiveness, broad spectrum and systemic function. Excessive tebuconazole may pose a great threat to human and animal health. Traditional detection techniques for tebuconazole usually have limitations such as expensive equipment, poor antibody stability, and time-consuming procedures. Herein, a sensitive sensor is developed for the rapid detection of tebuconazole based on hydrogel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chips. Aggregated Ag nanoparticles (a-AgNPs) with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength are in-situ synthesized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution for preparing hydrogel SERS chips. Three hydrogel SERS chips are obtained to match the three commonly used laser wavelengths. On the basis, a match laser wavelength is selected according to the energy levels of tebuconazole and the Fermi level of a-AgNPs to gain a strong chemical enhancement. At the same time, the chip with a corresponding LSPR wavelength to the laser is applied to obtain a strong electromagnetic enhancement. Thus, highly sensitive SERS signal of tebuconazole is obtained. Furthermore, the obtained hydrogel SERS chips have good repeatability, outstanding reproducibility and strong anti-interference ability, and show outstanding reliability in practical applications. As a result, the SERS chips offer a reliable and convenient platform for the quick detection of tebuconazole in foods. The detection limit is as low as 1 ppb, and the recoveries is distributed in the range of 94.66-106.70 %. This work would promote greatly the application of SERS in small molecule detection.

Advances in the preparation and biological applications of core@shell nanocrystals based on quantum dots and noble metal

Core/shell structured nanoparticles (NPs) are a novel category of functional materials that have garnered widespread attention due to their advantageous preparation methods, unique characteristics, and multifunctional application prospects, which have shown significant performance in materials chemistry and many other fields, such as electronics, biomedical, pharmaceutical, optics, and catalysis. Although some reviews about core/shell NPs have been published, there is still an intense requirement for an extensive review about the updated literature and new reported core/shell nanomaterials. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) and noble metal NPs have a very small size, which results in the large surface-to-volume ratio and under-coordinated chemical bonds. As a result, the effort on the design of core-shell structure has been essential for colloidal QDs and noble metal NPs. In this review, the core-shell structures dominated by traditional QDs and CsPbX3 perovskite QDs, as well as noble metal nanocrystals (NCs) were summarized. The applications of the above core-shell structure NCs in medical or biological fields such as sensing, biological imaging, medical diagnostics and therapeutics, immunological diagnosis were discussed. The main objective of this review is to provide a better basis for the synthesis, properties, and biomedical applications of QDs or noble metal core/shell NPs, which is beneficial for the further development of QDs, noble metal NPs, and other NPs.

Progress and challenges in bacterial infection theranostics based on functional metal nanoparticles

The rapid proliferation and infection of bacteria, especially multidrug-resistant bacteria, have become a great threat to global public health. Focusing on the emergence of "super drug-resistant bacteria" caused by the abuse of antibiotics and the insufficient and delayed early diagnosis of bacterial diseases, it is of great research significance to develop new technologies and methods for early targeted detection and treatment of bacterial infection. The exceptional effects of metal nanoparticles based on their unique physical and chemical properties make such systems ideal for the detection and treatment of bacterial infection both in vitro and in vivo. Metal nanoparticles also have admirable clinical application prospects due to their broad antibacterial spectrum, various antibacterial mechanisms and excellent biocompatibility. Herein, we summarized the research progress concerning the mechanism of metal nanoparticles in terms of antibacterial activity together with the detection of bacterial. Representative achievements are selected to illustrate the proof-of-concept in vitro and in vivo applications. Based on these observations, we also give a brief discussion on the current problems and perspective outlook of metal nanoparticles in the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infection.

An Exploration of Cysteamine as a Subphase Additive for the Fabrication of Uniform Gold Nanorod Arrays using Langmuir-Blodgett Deposition

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have attracted significant attention over the past several decades for a variety of applications and there has been steady progress with regards to their synthesis and modification. Despite these advances, the assembly of AuNRs into well-organized hierarchical assemblies remains a formidable challenge. Specifically, there is a need for tools that can fabricate assemblies of nanorods over large length scales at low cost with the potential for high-throughput manufacturing. Langmuir-Blodgettry is a monolayer deposition technique which has been primarily applied to amphiphilic molecules, but which has recently shown promise for the ordering of functionalized nanoparticles residing at the air-water interface. In this work, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition is explored for the formation of AuNR arrays for enhanced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing. In particular, both surface modification of the AuNRs as well as subphase modification with cysteamine were evaluated for AuNR array fabrication.

Progress on Material Design and Device Fabrication via Coupling Photothermal Effect with Thermoelectric Effect

Recovery and utilization of low-grade thermal energy is a topic of universal importance in today's society. Photothermal conversion materials can convert light energy into heat energy, which can now be used in cancer treatment, seawater purification, etc., while thermoelectric materials can convert heat energy into electricity, which can now be used in flexible electronics, localized cooling, and sensors. Photothermoelectrics based on the photothermal effect and the Seebeck effect provide suitable solutions for the development of clean energy and energy harvesting. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of recent developments in photothermal, thermoelectric, and, most importantly, photothermal-thermoelectric coupling materials. First, the research progress and applications of photothermal and thermoelectric materials are introduced, respectively. After that, the classification of different application areas of materials coupling photothermal effect with thermoelectric effect, such as sensors, thermoelectric batteries, wearable devices, and multi-effect devices, is reviewed. Meanwhile, the potential applications and challenges to be overcome for future development are presented, which are of great reference value in waste heat recovery as well as solar energy resource utilization and are of great significance for the sustainable development of society. Finally, the challenges of photothermoelectric materials as well as their future development are summarized.

Dichroism of plasmonic chiral nanoalloys by rational design

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations are conducted on a series of chiral gold/silver alloy nanowires to explore whether silver doping can produce an enhancement of circular dichroism at the plasmon resonance in these systems, and to identify the quantum-mechanical origin of the observed effects. We find a strong plasmonic dichroism when one or two helixes of gold atoms are substituted by silver in a linear chiral nanotube, whose pure gold counterpart does not display any plasmonic dichroism, and we rationalize this finding in terms of "decoupling" the destructive interference of excitations in the pure gold nanotube via alloying. However, further attempts to increase the plasmonic dichroism by considering multi-shell gold nanowires in which one entire shell is doped with silver did not produce the desired effect, but rather a decrease in circular dichroism. We show that this latter result is due to a more severe destructive interference in the dipole excitation contributions, and suggest that further amplification should be possible in principle by properly tuning simultaneously the nanowire structure and chemical ordering.

A magnetic plasma Fe3O4@Cu@Cu2O photoelectrochemical sensor for the detection of fumonisin B1

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin, a water-soluble metabolite produced by Fusarium cepacia, which mainly contaminates grain and its products and is acutely toxic and potentially carcinogenic to certain domestic animals. In this work, plasma nanocomposites of Fe3O4@Cu@Cu2O with magnetic and optoelectronic properties were synthesized as a sensing platform. On one hand, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metallic Cu accelerates the electron transfer rate. On the other hand, plasma-induced resonance energy transfer of metals and semiconductors can improve the utilization efficiency of light energy. A split photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on Fe3O4@Cu@Cu2O was proposed for the detection of FB1. The sensor has a wide linear range of 1.0-10 000 pg mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.28 pg mL-1 (LOD, S/N = 3), which can realize the specific detection of FB1 in real samples.

Synergistic Coassembly of Folic Acid-Based Supramolecular Polymer with a Covalent Polymer Toward Fabricating Functional Antibacterial Biomaterials

Supramolecular biomaterials can recapitulate the structural and functional facets of the native extracellular matrix and react to biochemical cues, leveraging the unique attributes of noncovalent interactions, including reversibility and tunability. However, the low mechanical properties of supramolecular biomaterials can restrict their utilization in specific applications. Combining the advantages of supramolecular polymers with covalent polymers can lead to the fabrication of tailor-made biomaterials with enhanced mechanical properties/degradability. Herein, we demonstrate a synergistic coassembled self-healing gel as a multifunctional supramolecular material. As the supramolecular polymer component, we chose folic acid (vitamin B9), an important biomolecule that forms a gel comprising one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular polymers. Integrating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into this supramolecular gel alters its ultrastructure and augments its mechanical properties. A drastic improvement of complex modulus (G*) (∼3674 times) was observed in the folic acid-PVA gel with 15% w/v PVA (33215 Pa) compared with the folic acid gel (9.04 Pa). The coassembled hydrogels possessed self-healing and injectable/thixotropic attributes and could be printed into specific three-dimensional (3D) shapes. Synergistically, the supramolecular polymers of folic acid also improve the toughness, durability, and ductility of the PVA films. A nanocomposite of the gels with silver nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic efficiency and antibacterial activity. The folic acid-PVA coassembled gels and films also possessed high cytocompatibility, substantiated by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and live-dead assays. Taken together, the antibacterial and cell-adhesive attributes suggest potential applications of these coassembled biomaterials for tissue engineering and wound healing.

Synthesis of Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes with finely tuned shell thicknesses for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic detection

In this work, we describe a facile method for generating monodisperse Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes with well-controlled size and fine-tuned Ag shell thicknesses. In this synthesis method, Au nanocubes were prepared via the seed-mediated growth method. Then, Au@Ag nanocubes with the core-shell structure were prepared separately by reducing AgNO3 with AA using as-prepared Au nanocubes as seeds. The thickness of Ag shells could be finely tuned from 3.6 nm to 10.0 nm by varying the concentration of the AgNO3 precursor. By investigating the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of Au@Ag nanocubes in relation to the thickness of the Ag shell, we found that the intensity of the characteristic peak of Ag gradually increases and that of Au gradually decreases as the thickness of the Ag shell increases. Additionally, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes were evaluated using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as the probe molecule. Interestingly, Au@Ag nanocubes exhibit efficient SERS intensities compared to the Au nanocubes, and Ag shell with a thickness of about 8.4 nm exhibits the optimal SERS activity. In addition, our results also demonstrated that Au@Ag nanocubes with an Ag shell thickness of 8.4 nm exhibited high SERS sensitivity and are capable of probing the analyte down to 10-12 M. The results obtained here suggest that Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes might serve as a nanoprobe for SERS-based analytical and biosensing applications.

Localized surface plasmon resonances of size-selected large silver nanoclusters (n = 70-100) soft-landed on a C60 organic substrate

Silver nanoclusters (Agn NCs) exhibit a remarkable optical property known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible to ultraviolet wavelengths. In this study, we address the size gap in LSPR responses between small NCs and nano-islands by synthesizing large Agn NCs with a countable number of atoms (n = 70-100) using a magnetron sputtering method, which were precisely size-selected and soft-landed onto substrates. The monodispersed Agn NCs were immobilized on a pre-decorated substrate with fullerene (C60) molecules, and their LSPR behaviors were characterized using two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy. Due to the distinct polarization selectivity of incident light associated with LSPR, the intensity ratio between p- and s-polarized lights (Ip/Is) in 2PPE spectroscopy serves as a reliable indicator of LSPR and its structural correlations. From n = 70 to 100, the Ip/Is value gradually decreases as the cluster size increases. This decrease is attributed to the enhancement of s-polarized light (Is), indicating that large Agn NCs on a C60 substrate undergo a deformation from spherical to flattened geometries, particularly above approximately n = 55.

Regulating interparticle proximity in plasmonic nanosphere aggregates to enhance photoacoustic response and photothermal stability

Designing plasmonic nanoparticles for biomedical photoacoustic (PA) imaging involves tailoring material properties at the nanometer scale. A key in developing plasmonic PA contrast nanoagents is to engineer their enhanced optical responses in the near-infrared wavelength range, as well as heat transfer properties and photostability. This study introduces anisotropic plasmonic nanosphere aggregates with close interparticle proximity as photostable and efficient contrast agent for PA imaging. Silver (Ag), among plasmonic metals, is particularly attractive due to its strongest optical response and highest heat conductivity. Our results demonstrate that close interparticle proximity in silver nanoaggregates (AgNAs), spatially confined within a polymer shell layer, leads to blackbody-like optical absorption, resulting in robust PA signals through efficient pulsed heat generation and transfer. Additionally, our AgNAs exhibit a high photodamage threshold highlighting their potential to outperform conventional plasmonic contrast agents for high-contrast PA imaging over multiple imaging sessions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability of the AgNAs for molecular PA cancer imaging in vivo by incorporating a tumor-targeting peptide moiety.

Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

Silver nanoprism-mediated colourimetric sensing probe for efficient detection of Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in water and reuse of formed bimetallic nanoprisms

Sensitive and selective methods for detecting Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in water are crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Although traditional methods for detection of Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions are accurate and sensitive, they face substantial challenges due to high costs, reliance on specialised equipment and limited field applicability, thereby presenting notable limitations. In this study, we introduce a novel colourimetric sensing probe designed specifically to identify Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in aqueous solutions. This probe utilises the enhanced chemical stability of Ag nanoprisms achieved through Pd or Pt deposition on their surfaces. Our approach features exceptionally low limits of detection of 2.6 nM for Pd(II) and 0.3 nM for Pt(II), indicating an impressive detection range. Furthermore, the probe's ease of use, cost-effectiveness and compatibility with both naked eye and UV-Vis spectrophotometric detection make it a selective, reliable and affordable option for point-of-care analysis. Beyond its impressive sensitivity for ion detection, this methodology offers the additional benefit of enabling the on-demand synthesis of customised bimetallic catalysts. The synthesised Ag/Pd and Ag/Pt bimetallic nanoprisms demonstrate promising catalytic potential for environmental remediation. This advancement paves the way for efficient recycling and reuse of valuable Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions in various catalytic applications.

Atomic/molecular layer deposition strategies for enhanced CO2 capture, utilisation and storage materials

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and the diminishing reserves of fossil fuels have raised profound concerns regarding the resulting consequences of global climate change and the future supply of energy. Hence, the reduction and transformation of CO2 not only mitigates environmental pollution but also generates value-added chemicals, providing a dual remedy to address both energy and environmental challenges. Despite notable advancements, the low conversion efficiency of CO2 remains a major obstacle, largely attributed to its inert chemical nature. It is imperative to engineer catalysts/materials that exhibit high conversion efficiency, selectivity, and stability for CO2 transformation. With unparalleled precision at the atomic level, atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) methods utilize various strategies, including ultrathin modification, overcoating, interlayer coating, area-selective deposition, template-assisted deposition, and sacrificial-layer-assisted deposition, to synthesize numerous novel metal-based materials with diverse structures. These materials, functioning as active materials, passive materials or modifiers, have contributed to the enhancement of catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability, effectively addressing the challenges linked to CO2 transformation. Herein, this review focuses on ALD and MLD's role in fabricating materials for electro-, photo-, photoelectro-, and thermal catalytic CO2 reduction, CO2 capture and separation, and electrochemical CO2 sensing. Significant emphasis is dedicated to the ALD and MLD designed materials, their crucial role in enhancing performance, and exploring the relationship between their structures and catalytic activities for CO2 transformation. Finally, this comprehensive review presents the summary, challenges and prospects for ALD and MLD-designed materials for CO2 transformation.

Dichroic switching of core-shell plasmonic nanoparticles on reflective surfaces

Plasmonic metal nanostructures can simultaneously scatter and absorb light, with resonance wavelength and strength depending on their morphology and composition. This work demonstrates that unique dichroic effects and high-contrast colour-switching can be achieved by leveraging the resonant scattering and absorption of light by plasmonic nanostructures and the specular reflection of the resulting transmitted light. Using core/shell nanostructures comprising a metal core and a dielectric shell, we show that their spray coating on reflective substrates produces dichroic films that can display colour switching at different viewing angles. The high-contrast colour switching, high flexibility in designing multicolour patterns, and convenience for large-scale production promise their wide range of applications, including anticounterfeiting, mechanochromic sensing, colour display, and printing.

Uniform colloidal synthesis of highly branched chiral gold nanoparticles

We present a uniform colloidal synthesis of highly branched gold nanoparticles (GNPs) including nanospheres, nanoplatelets and nanorods by cysteine-assisted seeded growth. The highly branched GNPs show blackbody-like absorption and chirality simultaneously, holding great potential for plasmonic or photothermal applications.

Seeing is believing: what is on the surface of silver nanocrystals suspended in their original reaction solution

Colloidal synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals always involves a multitude of ionic and molecular species. How the chemical species affect the evolution of nanocrystals remains a black box. As an essential ingredient in the polyol synthesis of Ag nanocubes, Cl- has been proposed to co-adsorb on the surface with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) to facilitate shape evolution. However, there is still no direct evidence to confirm the presence of Cl- on the surface of Ag nanocubes while they are suspended in the original reaction solution. By leveraging the high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering, here we offer direct evidence, for the first time, by resolving the Ag-Cl vibrational peak at 240 cm-1. This characteristic peak disappears if the synthesis is conducted in the absence of Cl-. Instead, three peaks associated with CF3COO- (from the precursor to Ag) are observed. When the sample is diluted with ethylene glycol, all the peaks associated with CF3COO- decrease proportionally in intensity, implying the involvement of chemisorption and negligible desorption during dilution. The chemisorbed CF3COO- is readily replaced by Cl- due to their major difference in binding strength. The co-adsorbed Cl- forces the carbonyl group of PVP binding to the Ag surface to take a more perpendicular configuration, enhancing its peak intensity. Altogether, these findings shed new light on the roles played by various chemical species in a successful synthesis of Ag nanocubes.

Selective Flocculation and H2O2-Free Oxidative Etching-Based Synthesis of Highly Monodisperse Ag Nanospheres for Uniform Quantum Dot Photoluminescence-Enhancing Plasmonic Cavity Applications

Ag nanoparticles have garnered significant attention for their excellent plasmonic properties and potential use as plasmonic cavities, primarily because of their intrinsically low ohmic losses and optical properties in the visible range. These are particularly crucial in systems involving quantum dots that absorb light at low wavelengths, where the need for a high threshold energy of interband transitions necessitates the incorporation of Ag nanostructures. However, the synthesis of Ag nanoparticles still encounters challenges in achieving structural uniformity and monodispersity, along with chemical stability, consequentially inducing inconsistent and poorly reliable optical responses. Here, we present a two-step approach for synthesizing highly uniform spherical Ag nanoparticles involving depletion-induced flocculation and Cu(II)-mediated oxidative etching. We found that the selective flocculation of multitwinned Ag nanocrystals significantly enhances the uniformity of the resulting Ag nanostructures, leaving behind only single-crystalline and single-twinned nanostructures. Subsequent oxidative etching, in which cupric ions are directly involved in the reaction, was designed based on Pourbaix diagrams to proceed following thermodynamically favorable states and circumvent the generation of reactive chemical species such as H2O2. This leads to perfectly spherical shapes of final Ag nanoparticles with a synthetic yield of 99.5% and additionally reduces the overall reaction time. Furthermore, we explore the potential applications of these monodisperse Ag nanospheres as uniform plasmonic cavities. The fabricated Ag nanosphere films uniformly enhanced the photoluminescence of InP/ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots, showcasing their capabilities in exhibiting consistent plasmonic responses across a large area.

Three-Dimensionally Nanometallic Superstructure Synthesized via a Single-Particle Soft-Enveloping Strategy

Three-dimensionally (3D) integrated metallic nanomaterials composed of two or more different types of nanostructures make up a class of advanced materials due to the multidimensional and synergistic effects between different components. However, designing and synthesizing intricate, well-defined metallic 3D nanomaterials remain great challenges. Here, a novel single-particle soft-enveloping strategy using a core-shell Au NP@mSiO2 particle as a template was proposed to synthesize 3D nanomaterials, namely, a Au nanoparticle@center-radial nanorod-Au-Pt nanoparticle (Au NP@NR-NP-Pt NP) superstructure. Taking advantage of the excellent plasmonic properties of Au NP@NR-NP by the synergistic plasmonic coupling of the outer Au NPs and inner Au nanorods, we can enhance the catalytic performance for 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation using Au NP@NR-NP-Pt NP as a photocatalyst with plasmon-excited hot electrons from Au NP@NR-NP under light irradiation, which is 2.76 times higher than in the dark. This process opens a door for the design of a new generation of 3D metallic nanomaterials for different fields.

3D hotspot engineering and analytes strategy enabled ultrasensitive SERS platform for biosensing of depression biomarker

Nowadays, the diagnose of depression mainly relies on clinical examination while impossible to accurately evaluate the occurrence of depression. Chemical approaches are captivating to analyze stress biomarkers for feedbacking body's endocrine response to stress stimuli. However, it remains challenging in exploring accurate, reliable and sensitive approaches. Herein, we rationally design a newly SERS platform with integrated hotspots engineering and analyte strategy to achieve highly sensitive analysis for estrogen, a typical depression biomarker in adolescent female. On the one hand, the 3D micro/nano plasmonic substrate containing Au-Ag Alloy Nanourchins (AAA-NUs) and arrays-based monolayer films of Au nanoparticles (Au NSs) was constructed to achieve high density and availability of hotspots. On the other hand, the analyte strategy was designed via rapid azotizing reaction to further enhance the scattering cross-section of estrogen in the form of azido compounds. With the synergism of them, the proposed SERS platform displayed high sensitivity for estrogen with a limit of detection down to 10-11 mg/mL. More importantly, the blood estrogen levels of depressed patients were evaluated via the proposed SERS platform and presented high consistence with clinical diagnostic results. This integrated SERS platform paves the way for universal and ultrasensitive biosensing and possess great potential for applying in multi-target detection and disease prediction.

Green Synthesis of Ganoderma Lucidum-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles and its Microbial Activity against Oral Pathogenic Microbes: An In Vitro Study

Nanotechnology is developing into a fast-expanding discipline with applications in science and technology, and nanostructures are a crucial research tool in many fields. Due to their remarkable electrical, optical, magnetic, catalytic, and pharmacological capabilities, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn study interest. Natural elements (plants, microorganisms, fungi, etc.) are utilized in a chemical-free, environmentally benign way to synthesize metals and metal oxides. The optical, electrical, and antimicrobial qualities of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) make them a popular choice. More than 200 active ingredients, including water-soluble, organic-soluble, and volatile chemicals, are found in Ganoderma. The main components are polysaccharides, adenosine, and terpenoids, each of which has exceptional therapeutic properties. This article explains the synthesis of Ag NPs by Ganoderma lucidum and tests the antibacterial effectiveness for use in biological applications.

Highly Sensitive and Wide-Range Detection of Thiabendazole via Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Using Bimetallic Nanoparticle-Functionalized Nanopillars

Thiabendazole (TBZ) is a benzimidazole; owing to its potent antimicrobial properties, TBZ is extensively employed in agriculture as a fungicide and pesticide. However, TBZ poses environmental risks, and excessive exposure to TBZ through various leakage pathways can cause adverse effects in humans. Therefore, a method must be developed for early and sensitive detection of TBZ over a range of concentrations, considering both human and environmental perspectives. In this study, we used silver nanopillar structures (SNPis) and Au@Ag bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) to fabricate a BNP@SNPi substrate. This substrate exhibited a broad reaction surface with significantly enhanced surface-enhanced Raman scattering hotspots, demonstrating excellent Raman performance, along with high reproducibility, sensitivity, and selectivity for TBZ detection. Ultimately, the BNP@SNPi substrate successfully detected TBZ across a wide concentration range in samples of tap water, drinking water, juice, and human serum, with respective limits of detection of 146.5, 245.5, 195.6, and 219.4 pM. This study highlights BNP@SNPi as a promising sensor platform for TBZ detection in diverse environments and contributes to environmental monitoring and bioanalytical studies.

Influence of silver doping on pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic effects of nano-titanium dioxide in murine lung

Silver is usually loaded on nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) through photodeposition method to enhance visible-light catalytic functions for environment purification. However, little is known about how the toxicity changes after silver doping and how the physicochemical properties of loaded components affect nanocomposite toxicity. In this study, Ag-TiO2 with different sizes and contents of silver particles were obtained by controlling photodeposition time (PDT) and silver addition amount. Pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic responses of these photocatalysts were evaluated in male C57BL/6J murine lung. As a result, silver was well assembled on TiO2 , promoting visible-light catalytic activity. Notably, the size of silver particles increased with PDT. Meanwhile, toxicity results showed that pure TiO2 (P25) mainly caused neutrophil infiltration, while 2 wt/wt% silver-loaded TiO2 recruited more types of inflammatory cells in the lung. Both of them caused the increase of proinflammatory cytokines while decreasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. However, 2 wt/wt% silver doping also accelerated the lung pro-fibrogenic response of photocatalysts in the subacute phase from evidence of collagen deposition and hydroxyproline concentrations. Mechanistically, the overactivation of TGFBR2 receptors in TGF-β/smads pathways by silver-loaded TiO2 rather than pure TiO2 may be the reason why silver-loaded TiO2 can promote pro-fibrogenic effect response. Intriguingly, the increased toxicity caused by silver doping can be rescued by increasing the size of the loaded silver or decreasing the silver amount. These results may be important for the new understanding of the toxicity of TiO2 -based photocatalysts.

Insights into the physico-chemical and biological characterization of sodium lignosulfonate - silver nanosystems designed for wound management

Chronic wounds represent one of the complications that might occur from the disruption of wound healing process. Recently, there has been a rise in interest in employing nanotechnology to develop novel strategies for accelerating wound healing. The aim of the present study was to use a green synthesis method to obtain AgNPs/NaLS systems useful for wounds management and perform an in-depth investigation of their behavior during and post-synthesis as well as of their biological properties. The colloids obtained from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and commercial sodium lignosulfonate (NaLS) in a single-pot aqueous procedure have been fully characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, DLS, TEM, XRD, and XPS to evaluate the synthesis efficiency and to provide new insights in the process of AgNPs formation and NaLS behavior in aqueous solutions. The effects of various concentrations of NaLS (0-16 mg/mL) and AgNO3 (0-20 mM) and of two different temperatures on AgNPs formation have been analyzed. Although the room temperature is feasible for AgNPs synthesis, the short mixing at 70 °C significantly increases the speed of nanoparticle formation and storage stability. In all experimental conditions AgNPs of 20-40 nm in size have been obtained. The antimicrobial activity assessed quantitatively on clinical and reference bacterial strains, both in suspension and biofilm growth state, revealed a broad antimicrobial spectrum, the most intensive inhibitory effect being noticed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli strains. The AgNP/NaLS enhanced the NO extracellular release, potentially contributing to the microbicidal and anti-adherence activity by protein oxidation. Both AgNP/NaLS and NaLS were non-hemolytic (hemolytic index<5%, 2.26 ± 0.13% hemolysis) and biocompatible (102.17 ± 3.43 % HaCaT cells viability). The presence of AgNPs increased the antioxidative activity and induced a significant cytotoxicity on non-melanoma skin cancer cells (62.86 ± 8.27% Cal-27 cells viability). Taken together, all these features suggest the multivalent potential of these colloids for the development of novel strategies for wound management, acting by preventing infection-associated complications and supporting the tissue regeneration.

Construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities and their applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy

Plasmonic nanocavities exhibit exceptional capabilities in visualizing the internal structure of a single molecule at sub-nanometer resolution. Among these, an easily manufacturable nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavity is a successful and powerful platform for demonstrating various optical phenomena. Exciting advances in surface-enhanced spectroscopy using NPoM nanocavities have been developed and explored, including enhanced Raman, fluorescence, phosphorescence, upconversion, etc. This perspective emphasizes the construction of NPoM nanocavities and their applications in achieving higher enhancement capabilities or spatial resolution in dark-field scattering spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. We describe a systematic framework that elucidates how to meet the requirements for studying light-matter interactions through the creation of well-designed NPoM nanocavities. Additionally, it provides an outlook on the challenges, future development directions, and practical applications in the field of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

"Magnet" Based on Activated Silver Nanoparticles Adsorbed Bacteria to Predict Refractory Apical Periodontitis Via Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Refractory apical periodontitis (RAP) is an endodontic apical inflammatory disease caused by Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Bacterial detection using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology is a hot research topic, but the specific and direct detection of oral bacteria is a challenge, especially in real clinical samples. In this paper, we develop a novel SERS-based green platform for label-free detection of oral bacteria. The platform was built on silver nanoparticles with a two-step enhancement way using NaBH4 and sodium (Na+) to form "hot spots," which resulted in an enhanced SERS fingerprint of E. faecalis with fast, quantitative, lower-limit, reproducibility, and stability. In combination with machine learning, four different oral bacteria (E. faecalis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans, and Escherichia coli) could be intelligently distinguished. The unlabeled detection method emphasized the specificity of E. faecalis in simulated saliva, serum, and even real samples from patients with clinical root periapical disease. In addition, the assay has been shown to be environmentally friendly and without secondary contamination through antimicrobial assays. The proposed label-free, rapid, safe, and green SERS detection strategy for oral bacteria provided an innovative solution for the early diagnosis and prevention of RAP and other perioral diseases.

Plasmonic biochips with enhanced stability in harsh environments for the sensitive detection of prostate-specific antigen

Hollow and porous plasmonic nanomaterials have been demonstrated for highly sensitive biosensing applications due to their distinctive optical properties. Immunosensors, which rely on antibody-antigen interactions, are essential constituents of diverse biosensing platforms owing to their exceptional binding affinity and selectivity. The majority of immunosensors and conventional bioassays needs special storage conditions and cold chain systems for transportation. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a serine protease, is widely employed in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In this study, we present the successful utilization of a biopolymer-preserved plasmonic biosensor with improved environmental stability for the sensitive detection of PSA. The preserved plasmonic biosensors exhibited sustained sensitivity in the detection of PSA, achieving a limit of detection of 10 pg mL-1. Furthermore, these biosensors exhibited remarkable stability at elevated temperatures for one week.

Near-Infrared Responsive Ag@Au Nanoplates with Exceptional Stability for Highly Sensitive Colorimetric and Photothermal Dual-Mode Lateral Flow Immunoassay

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) has played a vital role in point-of-care (POC) testing on account of its simplicity, rapidity, and low cost. However, the low sensitivity and difficulty of quantitation limit its further development. Sensitive markers with new detection modes are being developed to dramatically improve LFIA's performance. Herein, a ligand-complex approach was proposed to uniformly coat a thin layer of Au onto Ag triangular nanoplates (Ag TNPs) without etching the Ag cores, which not only retain the unique optical properties from Ag TNPs but also acquire the surface stability and biocompatibility of gold. The localized surface plasmon resonance absorption of these Ag@Au TNPs could be finely adjusted from visible (550 nm) to the second near-infrared region (NIR-II) (1100 nm), and even longer, by simply adjusting the ratio between edge length and thickness. Utilizing the Ag@Au TNPs as new markers for LFIA, a highly sensitive colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode detection of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein was achieved with a very low background. The Ag@Au TNPs showed an exceedingly high photothermal conversion efficiency of 61.4% (ca. 2 times higher than that of Au nanorods), endowing the LFIA method with a low photothermal detection limit (40 pg/mL), which was 25-fold lower than that of the colorimetric results. The generality of the method was further verified by the sensitive and accurate analysis of cardiac troponin I (cTnI). This method is robust, reproducible, and highly specific and has been successfully applied to SARS-COV-2 detection in 35 clinical samples with satisfactory results, demonstrating its potential for POC applications.

A durian-shaped multilayer core-shell SERS substrate for flow magnetic detection of pesticide residues on foods

A new type of durian-shaped Fe3O4@Au@Ag@Au (DFAAA) multilayer core-shell composite was prepared as an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The optimization process and SERS enhancement mechanism of the substrate were further explained with finite-difference time-domain simulation. The dense and uniform spiny array on the DFAAA surface had abundant "hot spots", greatly improving sensitivity, uniformity and reproducibility, with a Raman enhancement factor of 3.01 × 107 and storage-life of 30 d. A "flow magnetic detection method" was proposed to realize rapid and flexible detection of pesticide residues on the surface of different foods including fish and apple. The limit of detection of malachite green and thiram on the fish and apple surfaces were 0.13 and 0.18 ng/cm2, respectively. With its high SERS performance and good magnetic, the DFAAA possessed great application prospects as a facile SERS substrate for rapid and non-destructive detection of trace pesticide residues on foods.

Recent advances in visible light-activated photocatalysts for degradation of dyes: A comprehensive review

The rapid development in industrialization and urbanization coupled with an ever-increasing world population has caused a tremendous increase in contamination of water resources globally. Synthetic dyes have emerged as a major contributor to environmental pollution due to their release in large quantities into the environment, especially owing to their high demand in textile, cosmetics, clothing, food, paper, rubber, printing, and plastic industries. Photocatalytic treatment technology has gained immense research attention for dye contaminated wastewater treatment due to its environment-friendliness, ability to completely degrade dye molecules using light irradiation, high efficiency, and no generation of secondary waste. Photocatalytic technology is evolving rapidly, and the foremost goal is to synthesize highly efficient photocatalysts with solar energy harvesting abilities. The current review provides a comprehensive overview of the most recent advances in highly efficient visible light-activated photocatalysts for dye degradation, including methods of synthesis, strategies for improving photocatalytic activity, regeneration and their performance in real industrial effluent. The influence of various operational parameters on photocatalytic activity are critically evaluated in this article. Finally, this review briefly discusses the current challenges and prospects of visible-light driven photocatalysts. This review serves as a convenient and comprehensive resource for comparing and studying the fundamentals and recent advancements in visible light photocatalysts and will facilitate further research in this direction.

Unveiling the antibacterial strategies and mechanisms of MoS2: a comprehensive analysis and future directions

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem that requires alternative antibacterial agents. MoS2, a two-dimensional transition metal sulfide, has gained significant attention in recent years due to its exceptional photocatalytic performance, excellent infrared photothermal effect, and impressive antibacterial properties. This review presents a detailed analysis of the antibacterial strategies and mechanism of MoS2, starting with its morphology and synthesis methods and focusing on the different interaction stages between MoS2 and bacteria. The paper summarizes the main antibacterial mechanisms of MoS2, such as photocatalytic antibacterial, enzyme-like catalytic antibacterial, physical antibacterial, and photothermal-assisted antibacterial. It offers a comprehensive discussion focus on recent research studies of photocatalytic antibacterial mechanisms and categorizes them, guiding the application of MoS2 in the antibacterial field. Overall, the review provides an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial mechanisms of MoS2 and presents the challenges and future directions for the improvement of MoS2 in the field of high-efficiency antibacterial materials.

A porous silicon composite with irregular silver nano-dendritic particles: a rapid optical sensor for trace detection of malachite green in freshwater fish

This study focused on creating a SERS composite particle specifically designed for detecting malachite green. We synthesized silver nano-dendritic structures on p-type porous silicon using an external electric field, separating them from the silicon wafer. Ultrasonic crushing yielded irregular silver nanodendrite-modified porous silicon composite particles. Upon being tested in an aqueous solution of malachite green, these composite particles demonstrated significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering effects. Our findings highlight the exceptional performance of the SERS substrate composed of porous silicon and irregular silver nano-dendritic particles. It exhibited high sensitivity, specificity, consistent signal strength, and reliability in detecting trace amounts of malachite green in water. Under ideal conditions, the substrate could detect malachite green at concentrations as low as 10-8 M. Moreover, its swift response to trace amounts of malachite green in fish underscores its potential as an effective Raman detector.

The Geometry of Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Plasmonic Nanocavities Impacts Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Backgrounds

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has garnered substantial attention due to its ability to achieve single-molecule sensitivity by utilizing metallic nanostructures to amplify the exceedingly weak Raman scattering process. However, the introduction of metal nanostructures can induce a background continuum which can reduce the ultimate sensitivity of SERS in ways that are not yet well understood. Here, we investigate the impact of laser irradiation on both Raman scattering and backgrounds from self-assembled monolayers within nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities with variable geometry. We find that laser irradiation can reduce the height of the monolayer by inducing an irreversible change in molecular conformation. The resulting increased plasmon confinement in the nanocavities not only enhances the SERS signal, but also provides momentum conservation in the inelastic light scattering of electrons, contributing to the enhancement of the background continuum. The plasmon confinement can be modified by changing the size and the geometry of nanoparticles, resulting in a nanoparticle geometry-dependent background continuum in SERS. Our work provides new routes for further modifying the geometry of plasmonic nanostructures to improve SERS sensitivity.

Au Octahedral Nanosponges: 3D Plasmonic Nanolenses for Near-Field Focusing

Here, we report the synthesis of three-dimensional plasmonic nanolenses for strong near-field focusing. The nanolens exhibits a distinctive structural arrangement composed of nanoporous sponge-like networks within their interior. We denote these novel nanoparticles as "Au octahedral nanosponges" (Au Oh NSs). Employing a carefully planned multistep synthetic approach with Au octahedra serving as sacrificial templates, we successfully synthesized Au Oh NSs in solution. The porous domains resembling sponges contributed to enhanced scattering and absorption of incident light within metal ligaments. This optical energy was subsequently transferred to the nanospheres at the vertex, where near-field focusing was maximized. We named this observed enhancement a "lightning-sphere effect". Using single particle-by-particle surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), we optimized the morphological dimensions of the spheres and porous domains to achieve the most effective near-field focusing. In the context of bulk SERS measurements targeting weakly adsorbing analytes (2-chloroethyl phenyl sulfide) in the gas phase, we achieved a low detection limit of 10 ppb. For nonadsorbing species (dimethyl methyl phosphonate), utilization of hybrid SERS substrates consisting of Au Oh NSs and metal-organic frameworks as gas-adsorbing intermediate layers was highly effective for successful SERS detection.

Colloidal Plasmonic TiN Nanoparticles for Efficient Solar Seawater Desalination

Transferring traditional plasmonic noble metal nanomaterials from the laboratory to industrial production has remained challenging due to the high price of noble metals. The development of cost-effective non-noble-metal alternatives with outstanding plasmonic properties has therefore become essential. Herein, we report on the gram-scale production of differently shaped TiN nanoparticles with strong plasmon-enabled broadband light absorption, including differently sized TiN nanospheres, nanobipyramids, and nanorod arrays. The TiN nanospheres and nanobipyramids are further coembedded in highly porous poly(vinyl alcohol) films to function as a photothermal material for solar seawater desalination. A seawater evaporation rate of 3.8 kg m-2 h-1 is achieved, which marks the record performance among all plasmonic solar seawater desalination systems reported so far. The removal percentage of phenol reaches 98.3%, which is attributed to the joint action of the excellent photocatalytic ability and the superhydrophilicity of the porous TiN-based composite film.

Ultrasensitive lateral-flow assays via plasmonically active antibody-conjugated fluorescent nanoparticles

Lateral-flow assays (LFAs) are rapid and inexpensive, yet they are nearly 1,000-fold less sensitive than laboratory-based tests. Here we show that plasmonically active antibody-conjugated fluorescent gold nanorods can make conventional LFAs ultrasensitive. With sample-to-answer times within 20 min, plasmonically enhanced LFAs read out via a standard benchtop fluorescence scanner attained about 30-fold improvements in dynamic range and in detection limits over 4-h-long gold-standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and achieved 95% clinical sensitivity and 100% specificity for antibodies in plasma and for antigens in nasopharyngeal swabs from individuals with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Comparable improvements in the assay's performance can also be achieved via an inexpensive portable scanner, as we show for the detection of interleukin-6 in human serum samples and of the nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal samples. Plasmonically enhanced LFAs outperform standard laboratory tests in sensitivity, speed, dynamic range, ease of use and cost, and may provide advantages in point-of-care diagnostics.

A highly selective sensor based on p-tetranitrocalix[4]arene-capped copper nanoparticles for colorimetric and bare-eye detection of cyclophosphamide

In the current study, one of the outstanding facile and simple protocols is proposed for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using NaBH4 as a reducing agent and p-tetranitrocalix[4]arene (p-TNC4) as a capping agent. According to our knowledge, no such technique is available in the literature for colorimetric detection of cyclophosphamide (CPA) using CuNPs at the trace level. The well-organized synthesis was confirmed via advanced spectroscopic techniques. The crystallite size, shape, phase purity, and morphological characteristics were determined via XRD, AFM, FT-IR, and UV-visible spectroscopy. At the optimal conditions for CPA detection, the sensor reveals an excellent sensitivity, selectivity, as well as stability with LOD and LOQ 20 nM and 60 nM, respectively. However, the proposed sensor showed excellent potential and selectivity for the sensing of colorimetric detection of CPA that can be effectively applied to real blood serum samples. The proposed approach is better suited as compared to reported protocols in terms of handling, simplicity, economic, energy consumption, reproducibility, and excellent performance in a very short time.

Bioinspired Multifunctional Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Sensing Applications: A Sustainable Approach

Silver nanoparticles developed via biosynthesis are the most fascinating nanosized particles and encompassed with excellent physicochemical properties. The bioinspired nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes have attracted huge attention due to their stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and use of less hazardous chemicals. This is an ideal method for synthesizing a range of nanosized metal particles from plants and biomolecules. Optical biosensors are progressively being fabricated for the attainment of sustainability by using opportunities offered by nanotechnology. This review focuses mainly on tuning the optical properties of the metal nanoparticles for optical sensing to explore the importance and applications of bioinspired silver nanoparticles. Further, this review deliberates the role of bioinspired silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and energy applications. Profound insight into the antimicrobial properties of these nanoparticles is also appreciated. Tailor-made bioinspired nanoparticles with effectuating characteristics can unsurprisingly target tumor cells and distribute enwrapped payloads intensively. Existing challenges and prospects of bioinspired Ag NPs are also summarized. This review is expected to deliver perceptions about the progress of the next generation of bioinspired Ag NPs and their outstanding performances in various fields by promoting sustainable practices for fabricating optical sensing devices.

Precise solid-phase synthesis of CoFe@FeOx nanoparticles for efficient polysulfide regulation in lithium/sodium-sulfur batteries

Complex metal nanoparticles distributed uniformly on supports demonstrate distinctive physicochemical properties and thus attract a wide attention for applications. The commonly used wet chemistry methods display limitations to achieve the nanoparticle structure design and uniform dispersion simultaneously. Solid-phase synthesis serves as an interesting strategy which can achieve the fabrication of complex metal nanoparticles on supports. Herein, the solid-phase synthesis strategy is developed to precisely synthesize uniformly distributed CoFe@FeOx core@shell nanoparticles. Fe atoms are preferentially exsolved from CoFe alloy bulk to the surface and then be carburized into a FexC shell under thermal syngas atmosphere, subsequently the formed FexC shell is passivated by air, obtaining CoFe@FeOx with a CoFe alloy core and a FeOx shell. This strategy is universal for the synthesis of MFe@FeOx (M = Co, Ni, Mn). The CoFe@FeOx exhibits bifunctional effect on regulating polysulfides as the separator coating layer for Li-S and Na-S batteries. This method could be developed into solid-phase synthetic systems to construct well distributed complex metal nanoparticles.

Nanocomposites of Cu2O with plasmonic metals (Au, Ag): design, synthesis, and photocatalytic applications

Metal-semiconductor nanocomposites have been utilized in a multitude of applications in a wide array of fields, prompting substantial interest from different scientific sectors. Of particular interest are semiconductors paired with plasmonic metals due to the unique optical properties that arise from the individual interactions of these materials with light and the intercomponent movement of charge carriers in their heterostructure. This review focuses on the pairing of Cu2O semiconductor with strongly plasmonic metals, particularly Au and Ag. The design and synthesis of Au-Cu2O and Ag-Cu2O nanostructures, along with ternary nanostructures composed of the three components, are described, with in-depth discussion on the synthesis techniques and tunable parameters. The effects of compositing on the optical and electronic properties of the nanocomposites in the context of photocatalysis are discussed as well. Concluding remarks and potential areas for exploration are presented in the last section.

A core-molecule-shell Au@PATP@Ag nanorod for nicotine detection based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering technology

Nicotine is an addictive substance often found in tobacco and cigarette smoke and excessive exposure to it can cause various diseases. Herein, core-molecule-shell gold/4-aminothiophenol/silver nanorods (Au@PATP@Ag NRs) were prepared for quantitative detection of nicotine by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. The obtained Au@PATP@Ag NRs showed an outstanding SERS effect due to the plasticity of their morphology and the bimetallic synergistic effect between the excellent stability of Au and the highly enhanced effect of Ag. The Au@PATP@Ag NRs substrate exhibited an extremely high enhancement factor (EF) of 2.17 × 107. In addition, in-situ synthesized PATP was used as an internal standard to correct signal fluctuation and improve the reliability of quantitative nicotine detection. A wide linear dynamic range from 10-8 to 10-3 M was obtained and an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) was about 3.12 × 10-9 M, which was superior to most of previously reported methods. This work has also been used for determining nicotine content in cigarettes and simulated environmental tobacco smoke by using a portable device. These results indicated that the developed SERS method had many potential applications in the quantitative determination of nicotine in real tobacco samples.

The Rise of Structurally Anisotropic Plasmonic Janus Gold Nanostars

Nanostructures intrinsically possessing two different structural or functional features, often called Janus nanoparticles, are emerging as a potential material for sensing, catalysis, and biomedical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of plasmonic gold Janus nanostars (NSs) possessing a smooth concave pentagonal morphology with sharp tips and edges on one side and, contrastingly, a crumbled morphology on the other. The methodology reported herein for their synthesis - a single-step growth reaction - is different from any other Janus nanoparticle preparation involving either template-assisted growth or a masking technique. Interestingly, the coexistence of lower- and higher-index facets was found in these Janus NSs. The general paradigm for synthesizing gold Janus NSs was investigated by understanding the kinetic control mechanism with the combinatorial effect of all the reagents responsible for the structure. The optical properties of the Janus NSs were realized by corelating their extinction spectra with the simulated data. The size-dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of these Janus NSs was studied with 1,4-BDT as the model analyte. Finite-difference time-domain simulations for differently sized particles revealed the distribution of electromagnetic hot-spots over the particles resulting in enhancement of the SERS signal in a size-dependent manner.

On-Chip Monolithically Integrated Ultraviolet Low-Threshold Plasmonic Metal-Semiconductor Heterojunction Nanolasers

The metal-semiconductor heterojunction is imperative for the realization of electrically driven nanolasers for chip-level platforms. Progress in developing such nanolasers has hitherto rarely been realized, however, because of their complexity in heterojunction fabrication and the need to use noble metals that are incompatible with microelectronic manufacturing. Most plasmonic nanolasers lase either above a high threshold (101 -103  MW cm-2 ) or at a cryogenic temperature, and lasing is possible only after they are removed from the substrate to avoid the large ohmic loss and the low modal reflectivity, making monolithic fabrication impossible. Here, for the first time, record-low-threshold, room-temperature ultraviolet (UV) lasing of plasmon-coupled core-shell nanowires that are directly grown on silicon is demonstrated. The naturally formed core-shell metal-semiconductor heterostructure of the nanowires leads to a 100-fold improvement in growth density over previous results. This unprecedentedly high nanowire density creates intense plasmonic resonance, which is outcoupled to the resonant Fabry-Pérot microcavity. By boosting the emission strength by a factor of 100, the hybrid photonic-plasmonic system successfully facilitates a record-low laser threshold of 12 kW cm-2 with a spontaneous emission coupling factor as high as ≈0.32 in the 340-360 nm range. Such architecture is simple and cost-competitive for future UV sources in silicon integration.

Motif-to-Core Nucleation in a Decahedral Evolution Pattern

The atomic precision of ultrasmall metal nanoclusters has opened the door to elucidating the structural evolution principles of metal nanomaterials at the molecular level. Here, we report a novel set of super-atomic Ag clusters, including [Ag19(TBBT)16(DPPP)4]+ (Ag19), [Ag22(DMAT)8(DPPM)4Cl8]2+ (Ag22), Ag26(SPh3,5-CF3)15(DPPF)4Cl5 (Ag26), and [Ag30(DMAT)12(DPPP)4Cl8]2+ (Ag30). The core structures of these clusters correspond to one decahedral Ag7, perpendicular bi-decahedrons, three-dimensional penta-decahedrons, and hexa-decahedrons, respectively. The Ag atoms in AgS2 blocks show a strong correlation with the decahedral cores: the five equatorial Ag atoms in the decahedral Ag7 core of Ag19 all adopt the AgS2 coordination, while the Ag atoms in AgS2 blocks of Ag22, Ag26, and Ag30 unexceptionally constitute additional decahedral structures with the core Ag atoms. Specifically, two and four core Ag atoms of Ag26 and Ag30 clusters occupy positions that highly resemble that of Ag (in AgS2 motifs) of Ag22. The strong structural correlation demonstrates the motif-to-core evolution of the surface Ag (on AgS2) to build extra-decahedral blocks. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the 2e, 4e, 6e, and 8e clusters (from Ag19 to Ag30) adopt 1S2, 1S21P2, 1S21P4, and 1S21P6 electron configurations, all of which feature excellent super-atomic characters.

Size-Controlled Silver Nanoparticles Supported by Pyrolytic Carbon from Microcrystalline Cellulose

A facile method was developed for preparing size-controlled silver nanoparticles supported by pyrolytic carbon from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The pyrolysis of cellulose-AgNO3 mixture caused the oxidation of cellulose, resulting in carboxyl groups to which silver ions can bind firmly and act as nuclei for the deposition of silver nanoparticles. The structure and properties of the obtained nanocomposite were characterized by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results suggest that silver nanoparticles were integrated successfully and dispersed uniformly in the pyrolytic carbon matrix. The average particle size varied between 20 nm and 100 nm in correlation to the dose of silver nitrate and temperature of pyrolysis. The products showed high electric conductivity and strong antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Hybrid Metal-Ligand Interfacial Dipole Engineering of Functional Plasmonic Nanostructures for Extraordinary Responses of Optoelectronic Properties

Programmable manipulation of inorganic-organic interfacial electronic properties of ligand-functionalized plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) is the key parameter dictating their applications such as catalysis, photovoltaics, and biosensing. Here we report the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of gold triangular nanoprisms (Au TNPs) in solid state that are functionalized with dipolar, conjugated ligands. A library of thiocinnamate ligands with varying surface dipole moments were used to functionalize TNPs, which results in ∼150 nm reversible tunability of LSPR peak wavelength with significant peak broadening (∼230 meV). The highly adjustable chemical system of thiocinnamate ligands is capable of shifting the Au work function down to 2.4 eV versus vacuum, i.e., ∼2.9 eV lower than a clean Au (111) surface, and this work function can be modulated up to 3.3 eV, the largest value reported to date through the formation of organothiolate SAMs on Au. Interestingly, the magnitude of plasmonic responses and work function modulation is NP shape dependent. By combining first-principles calculations and experiments, we have established the mechanism of direct wave function delocalization of electrons residing near the Fermi level into hybrid electronic states that are mostly dictated by the inorganic-organic interfacial dipole moments. We determine that both interfacial dipole and hybrid electronic states, and vinyl conjugation together are the key to achieving such extraordinary changes in the optoelectronic properties of ligand-functionalized, plasmonic NPs. The present study provides a quantitative relationship describing how specifically constructed organic ligands can be used to control the interfacial properties of NPs and thus the plasmonic and electronic responses of these functional plasmonics for a wide range of plasmon-driven applications.

Colorimetric sensing of Cu(II) ions in water on the basis of selective chemical etching of EDA-capped Ag nanoplates

Cu(II) ions are one of the essential mineral elements in the human body, but can pose a substantial health risk to people exposed to high concentrations of Cu(II) ions over a long period. Therefore, the ability to detect Cu(II) ions in drinking water is important. In this study, a novel colorimetric sensing probe for the easy and onsite detection of Cu(II) ions in drinking water was developed. The probe was constructed through selective chemical etching of triangular Ag nanoplates with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. Ethylenediamine (EDA) was used as an organic capping agent to improve the chemical stability of triangular Ag nanoplates. Selective chemical etching of the EDA-capped Ag nanoplates in the presence of Cu(II) ions as a result of the formation of a coordination complex between the EDA and Cu(II) ions caused remarkable changes in the nanoplates' LSPR characteristics. On the basis of this phenomenon, a novel colorimetric sensing probe capable of detecting Cu(II) ions in drinking water at concentrations above the safety limit was developed. Our findings were also extended to develop a portable and paper-based sensing probe with good long-term stability to overcome the shortcomings of liquid-phase colorimetric sensors without requiring a spectrometer. The proposed colorimetric sensing probes provide accurate results even with a real sample and offer numerous advantages over conventional sensing platforms, including clearly distinguishable color changes that can be observed by the naked eye; thus, the proposed probes can be used for the selective, reliable, and low-cost point-of-care detection of Cu(II) ions in water.

Advances in therapeutic applications of silver nanoparticles

Nanotechnology is one of the most appealing area for developing new applications in biotechnology and medicine. For decades, nanoparticles have been extensively studied for a variety of biomedical applications. Silver has evolved into a potent antibacterial agent that can be used in a variety of nanostructured materials of various shapes and sizes. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) based antimicrobial compounds are employed in a wide range of applications, including medicinal uses, surface treatment and coatings, the chemical and food industries, and agricultural productivity. When designing formulations for specific applications, the size, shape, and surface area of AgNPs are all crucial structural aspects to consider. Different methods for producing AgNPs with varying sizes and forms that are less harmful have been devised. The anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-angiogenic properties of AgNPs have been addressed in this review, as well as their generation and processes. Herein, we have reviewed the advances in therapeutic applications of AgNPs, as well as their limitations and barriers for future applications.

Ag/ZnO core-shell NPs boost photosynthesis and growth rate in wheat seedlings under simulated full sun spectrum

Breeding programs rely on light wavelength, intensity, and photoperiod for rapid success. In this study, we investigated the ability of Ag/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) to improve the photosynthesis and growth of wheat under simulated full solar spectrum conditions. The world population is increasing rapidly, it is necessary to increase the number of crops in order to ensure the world's food security. Conventional breeding is time-consuming and expensive, so new techniques such as rapid breeding are needed. Rapid breeding shows promise in increasing crop yields by controlling photoperiod and environmental factors in growth regulators. However, achieving optimum growth and photosynthesis rates is still a challenge. Here, we used various methods to evaluate the effects of Ag/ZnO NPs on rice seeds. Using bioinformatics simulations, we evaluated the light-harvesting efficiency of chlorophyll a in the presence of Ag/ZnO NPs. Chemically synthesized Ag/ZnO nanoparticles were applied to rice grains at different concentrations (0-50 mg/L) and subjected to a 12-h preparation time. Evaluation of seed germination rate and growth response in different light conditions using a Light Emitting Diode (LED) growth chamber that simulates a rapid growth system. The analysis showed that the surface plasmon resonance of Ag/ZnO NPs increased 38-fold, resulting in a 160-fold increase in the light absorption capacity of chlorophyll. These estimates are supported by experimental results showing an 18% increase in the yield of rice seeds treated with 15 mg/L Ag/ZnO NPs. More importantly, the treated crops showed a 2.5-fold increase in growth and a 1.4-fold increase in chlorophyll content under the simulated full sun spectrum (4500 lx) and a 16-h light/8-h dark photoperiod. More importantly, these effects are achieved without oxidative or lipid peroxidative damage. Our findings offer a good idea to increase crop growth by improving photosynthesis using Ag/ZnO nanoparticle mixture. To develop this approach, future research should go towards optimizing nanoparticles, investigating the long-term effects, and exploring the applicability of this process in many products. The inclusion of Ag/ZnO NPs in rapid breeding programs has the potential to transform crops by reducing production and increasing agricultural productivity.

Fluorescence enhancement of surface plasmon coupled emission by Au nanobipyramids and its modulation effect on multi-wavelength radiation

Surface plasmon coupled emission (SPCE), a novel surface-enhanced fluorescence technique, can generate directional and amplified radiation by the intense interaction between fluorophores and surface plasmons (SPs) of metallic nanofilms. For plasmon-based optical systems, the strong interaction between localized and propagating SPs and "hot spot" structures show great potential to significantly improve the electromagnetic (EM) field and modulate optical properties. Au nanobipyramids (NBPs) with two sharp apexes to enhance and restrict the EM field were introduced through electrostatic adsorption to achieve a mediated fluorescence system, and the emission signal enhancement was realized by factors over 60 compared with the normal SPCE. It has been demonstrated that the intense EM field produced by the NBPs assembly is what triggered the unique enhancement of SPCE by Au NBPs, which effectively overcomes the inherent signal quenching of SPCE for ultrathin sample detection. This remarkable enhanced strategy offers the chance to improve the detection sensitivity for plasmon-based biosensing and detection systems, and expand the range of applications for SPCE in bioimaging with more comprehensive and detailed information acquisition. The enhancement efficiency for various emission wavelengths was investigated in light of the wavelength resolution of SPCE, and it was discovered that enhanced emission for multi-wavelength could be successfully detected through the different emission angles due to the angular displacement caused by wavelength change. Benefit from this, the Au NBP modulated SPCE system was employed for multi-wavelength simultaneous enhancement detection under a single collection angle, which could broaden the application of SPCE in simultaneous sensing and imaging for multi-analytes, and expected to be used for high throughput detection of multi-component analysis.
