Combined effect of cold plasma-activated oxygen (CPAO) and microwave on microbial decontamination and quality of milkshake powder

This study presents a new method combining cold plasma-activated oxygen (CPAO) and microwave (MW) to decontaminate milkshake powder, exploring its effectiveness, mechanisms, and quality impact. CPAO (6 min) alone reduced bacterial load by 0.419 log CFU/g, and MW (3 min) by 0.030 log CFU/g. However, their co-application significantly amplified decontamination, achieving a 1.265 log CFU/g reduction. CPAO-MW co-treatment inflicted more oxidative damage on bacterial cell membranes and intracellular antioxidant defense system, leading to higher mortality. It also raised protein and lipid oxidation, while decreasing vitamin C and A levels in the powder. Specifically, CPAO (6 min)-MW (3 min) co-treatment increased the carbonyl content from 0.438 to 0.891 nmol/mg protein, malondialdehyde from 0.824 to 0.996 mg/kg, and lowered vitamin C from 162.151 to 137.640 mg/kg, and vitamin A from 2.05 to 1.38 mg/kg. This study shows CPAO-MW is effective for decontaminating powdered foods but highlights a need to reduce negative effects.

In-situ treatment of gaseous benzene in fixed-bed biofilter with polyurethane foam: Functional population response and benzene transformation pathway

Volatile organic compounds emitted from landfills posed adverse effect on health. In this study, gaseous benzene was biologically treated using an in-situ biofilter without air pump. Its performance was investigated and the removal efficiency of benzene reached over 90 %. The decrease in the average benzene concentration was consistent with first-order reaction kinetics. Mycolicibacterium dominated the bacterial consortium (41-57 %) throughout the degradation. Annotation of genes by metagenomic analysis helped to deduce the degradation pathways (benzene degradation, catechol ortho-cleavage and meta-cleavage) and to reveal the contribution of different species to the degradation process. In total, 21 kinds of key genes and 13 enzymes were involved in the three modules of benzene transformation. Mycolicibacter icosiumassiliensis and Sphingobium sp. SCG-1 carried multiple functional genes critically involved in benzene biodegradation. These findings provide technical and theoretical support for the in-situ bioremediation of benzene-contaminated soil and waste gas reduction in landfills.

Insights into sunlight-driven transformation of tetracycline by iron (hydr)oxides: The dominating role of self-generated hydrogen peroxide

Iron (hydr)oxides are abundant in surface environment, and actively participate in the transformation of organic pollutants due to their large specific surface areas and redox activity. This work investigated the transformation of tetracycline (TC) in the presence of three common iron (hydr)oxides, hematite (Hem), goethite (Goe), and ferrihydrite (Fh), under simulated sunlight irradiation. These iron (hydr)oxides exhibited photoactivity and facilitated the transformation of TC with the initial phototransformation rates decreasing in the order of: Hem > Fh > Goe. The linear correlation between TC removal efficiency and the yield of HO• suggests that HO• dominated TC transformation. The HO• was produced by UV-induced decomposition of self-generated H2O2 and surface Fe2+-triggered photo-Fenton reaction. The experimental results indicate that the generation of HO• was controlled by H2O2, while surface Fe2+ was in excess. Sunlight-driven H2O2 production in the presence of the highly crystalline Hem and Goe occurred through a one-step two-electron reduction pathway, while the process was contributed by both O2-induced Fe2+ oxidation and direct reduction of O2 by electrons on the conduction band in the presence of the poorly crystalline Fh. These findings demonstrate that sunlight may significantly accelerate the degradation of organic pollutants in the presence of iron (hydr)oxides.

Were Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes Really Understood? Basic Concepts, Cognitive Biases, and Experimental Details

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for pollutant removal have attracted extensive interest, but some controversies about the identification of reactive species were usually observed. This critical review aims to comprehensively introduce basic concepts and rectify cognitive biases and appeals to pay more attention to experimental details in PS-AOPs, so as to accurately explore reaction mechanisms. The review scientifically summarizes the character, generation, and identification of different reactive species. It then highlights the complexities about the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance, the uncertainties about the use of probes and scavengers, and the necessities about the determination of scavenger concentration. The importance of the choice of buffer solution, operating mode, terminator, and filter membrane is also emphasized. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives to alleviate the misinterpretations toward reactive species and reaction mechanisms in PS-AOPs.

Insights into the Crystallinity-Dependent Photochemical Productions of Reactive Oxygen Species from Iron Minerals

Iron minerals are widespread in earth's surface water and soil. Recent studies have revealed that under sunlight irradiation, iron minerals are photoactive on producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), a group of key species in regulating elemental cycling, microbe inactivation, and pollutant degradation. In nature, iron minerals exhibit varying crystallinity under different hydrogeological conditions. While crystallinity is a known key parameter determining the overall activity of iron minerals, the impact of iron mineral crystallinity on photochemical ROS production remains unknown. Here, we assessed the photochemical ROS production from ferrihydrites with different degrees of crystallinity. All examined ferrihydrites demonstrated photoactivity under irradiation, resulting in the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). The photochemical ROS production from ferrihydrites increased with decreasing ferrihydrite crystallinity. The crystallinity-dependent photochemical •OH production was primarily attributed to conduction band reduction reactions, with the reduction of O2 by conduction band electrons being the rate-limiting key process. Conversely, the crystallinity of iron minerals had a negligible influence on photon-to-electron conversion efficiency or surface Fenton-like activity. The difference in ROS productions led to a discrepant degradation efficiency of organic pollutants on iron mineral surfaces. Our study provides valuable insights into the crystallinity-dependent ROS productions from iron minerals in natural systems, emphasizing the significance of iron mineral photochemistry in natural sites with abundant lower-crystallinity iron minerals such as wetland water and surface soils.

Combined of plasma-activated water and dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric cold plasma treatment improves the characteristic flavor of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) through facilitating lipid oxidation

To explore the combination effects of plasma-activated water and dielectric barrier discharge (PAW-DBD) cold plasma treatment on the formation of volatile flavor and lipid oxidation in Asian sea bass (ASB), the volatile flavor compounds and lipid profiles were characterized by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry and LC-MS-based lipidomics analyses. In total, 38 volatile flavor compound types were identified, and the PAW-DBD group showed the most kinds of volatile components with a significant (p < 0.05) higher content in aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols. A total of 1500 lipids was detected in lipidomics analysis, phosphatidylcholine was the most followed by triglyceride. The total saturated fatty acids content in PAW-DBD group increased by 105.02 μg/g, while the total content of unsaturated fatty acids decreased by 275.36 μg/g. It can be concluded that the PAW-DBD processing increased both the types and amounts of the volatile flavor in ASB and promoted lipid oxidation by altering lipid profiles.

Direct and indirect photodegradation in aquatic systems mitigates photosensitized toxicity in screening-level substance risk assessments of selected petrochemical structures

Photochemical processes are typically not incorporated in screening-level substance risk assessments due to the complexity of modeling sunlight co-exposures and resulting interactions on environmental fate and effects. However, for many substances, sunlight exerts a profound influence on environmental degradation rates and ecotoxicities. Recent modeling advances provide an improved technical basis for estimating the effect of sunlight in modulating both substance exposure and toxicity in the aquatic environment. Screening model simulations were performed for 25 petrochemical structures with varied uses and environmental fate properties. Model predictions were evaluated by comparing the ratios of predicted exposure concentrations with and without light to the corresponding ratios of toxicity thresholds under the same conditions. The relative ratios of exposure and hazard in light vs. dark were then used to evaluate how inclusion of light modulates substance risk analysis. Results indicated that inclusion of light reduced PECs by factors ranging from 1.1- to 63-fold as a result of photodegradation, while reducing PNECs by factors ranging from 1- to 49-fold due to photoenhanced toxicity caused by photosensitization. Consequently, the presence of light altered risk quotients by factors that ranged from 0.1- to 17-fold, since the predicted increase in substance hazard was mitigated by the reduction in exposure. For many structures, indirect photodegradation decreases environmental exposures independently of the direct photolysis pathway which is associated with enhanced phototoxicity. For most of the scenarios and chemicals in the present work, photosensitization appears to be mitigated by direct and indirect degradation from sunlight exposure.

Enhanced Mineralization of Organic Pollutants through Atomic Hydrogen-Mediated Alternative Transformation Pathways

Electrocatalytic hydrogen atom-hydroxyl radical (H*-·OH) redox system is a promising approach for contaminant removal and mineralization. However, its working mechanism, especially the effect of H*, remains unclear, hindering its practical application. Herein, we constructed an electrochemical reactor equipped with our self-made Pd-loaded Ti/TiO2 nanotube cathode and a commercial boron-doped diamond anode. After fulfilling the electrode characterization and free radical detection, we employed coumarin and 7-azido-4-methylcoumarin as probes to confirm the participation of H* in the transformation of organic compounds. A comprehensive study on the degradation kinetics, reaction, and mineralization mechanisms using benzoic acid (BA) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as model compounds was further conducted. The rate constants and total organic carbon removal of BA and 4-CP in the redox system increased compared with those of the individual oxidation and reduction processes. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that H* opens up alternative pathways for BA and 4-CP ring cleavage, forming quinones as reactive intermediates. Furthermore, H* facilitates the mineralization of the typical intermediates, maleic acid and fumaric acid, through C=C bond addition and H-abstraction from the 1,1-diol structure. The presence of H* provides alternative pathways for pollutant transformation, consequently reducing the treatment duration.

Insights into the Formation Mechanism of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Interface Reaction of SO2 on Hematite

The interplay between sulfur and iron holds significant importance in their atmospheric cycle, yet a complete understanding of their coupling mechanism remains elusive. This investigation delves comprehensively into the evolution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the interfacial reactions involving sulfur dioxide (SO2) and iron oxides under varying relative humidity conditions. Notably, the direct activation of water by iron oxide was observed to generate a surface hydroxyl radical (•OH). In comparison, the aging of SO2 was found to markedly augment the production of •OH radicals on the surface of α-Fe2O3 under humid conditions. This augmentation was ascribed to the generation of superoxide radicals (•O2-) stemming from the activation of O2 through the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle and its combination with the H+ ion to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the acidic surface. Moreover, the identification of moderate relative humidity as a pivotal factor in sustaining the surface acidity of iron oxide during SO2 aging underscores its crucial role in the coupling of iron dissolution, ROS production, and SO2 oxidation. Consequently, the interfacial reactions between SO2 and iron oxides under humid conditions are elucidated as atmospheric processes that enhance oxidation capacity rather than deplete ROS. These revelations offer novel insights into the mechanisms underlying •OH radical generation and oxidative potential within atmospheric interfacial chemistry.

The observation of atmospheric HONO by wet-rotating-denuder ion chromatograph in a coastal city: Performance and influencing factors

Due to the significance of atmospheric HONO as a reservoir for radicals and the presence of substantial unknown sources of HONO, there is a pressing need for accurate and consistent measurement of its concentration. In this study, we compared the measurements obtained from the monitor for aerosols and gases in ambient air (MARGA) based on wet chemical method with those from the incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) based on optical method to assess the suitability of the MARGA instrument for accurate HONO detection. The diurnal patterns obtained by the two instruments are similar, with peaks at 8 a.m. and lows at 5 p.m. Over the course of the observation period, it was often observed that HONO concentrations recorded by the MARGA instrument consistently exceeded those obtained through the IBBCEAS technique, accounting for approximately 91.33% of the total observation time. Throughout the entire observation period, the R2 value between the two instruments was 0.49, indicating relatively good correlation. However, with a slope of only 0.27, it suggests poor agreement between the two instruments. Furthermore, the R2 and slopes between the two instruments vary with the seasons and day-night. The larger the quartile values of NO2, NH3, and BC, the greater the slopes of both MARGA and IBBCEAS instruments, and the higher the concentrations of NO2, NH3, and BC (indicator of semivolatile oxidizable hydrocarbons), the greater the differences between the two instruments, all indicating that NH3 may promote the reaction of NO2 with semivolatile oxidizable hydrocarbons to produce HONO. The O3 with its strong oxidizing properties may cause underestimation in the MARGA instrument by oxidizing NO2- to NO3- in the absorbing solution. It is challenging to derive a universal correction formula due to the interference of various chemical substances. Hence, MARGA should not be used for HONO research in the future.

Catalyst durability in electrocatalytic H2O2 production: key factors and challenges

On-demand electrocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production is a significant technological advancement that offers a promising alternative to the traditional anthraquinone process. This approach leverages electrocatalysts for the selective reduction of oxygen through a two-electron transfer mechanism (ORR-2e-), holding great promise for delivering a sustainable and economically efficient means of H2O2 production. However, the harsh operating conditions during the electrochemical H2O2 production lead to the degradation of both structural integrity and catalytic efficacy in these materials. Here, we systematically examine the design strategies and materials typically utilized in the electroproduction of H2O2 in acidic environments. We delve into the prevalent reactor conditions and scrutinize the factors contributing to catalyst deactivation. Additionally, we propose standardised benchmarking protocols aimed at evaluating catalyst stability under such rigorous conditions. To this end, we advocate for the adoption of three distinct accelerated stress tests to comprehensively assess catalyst performance and durability.

Oxidation of imidacloprid insecticide through PMS activation using CuFe2O4 nanoparticles: Role of process parameters and surface modifications

The contamination of water bodies by synthetic organic compounds coupled with climate change and the growing demand for water supply calls for new approaches to water management and treatment. To tackle the decontamination issue, the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using copper magnetic ferrite (CuMF) nanoparticles prepared under distinct synthesis conditions was assessed to oxidize imidacloprid (IMD) insecticide. After optimization of some operational variables, such as CuMF load (62.5-250 mg L-1), PMS concentration (250-1000 μM), and solution pH (3-10), IMD was completely oxidized in 2 h without interferences from leached metal ions. Such performance was also achieved when using tap water but was inhibited by a simulated municipal wastewater due to scavenging effects promoted by inorganic and organic species. Although there was evidence of the presence of sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen oxidizing species, only four intermediate compounds were detected by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis, mainly due to hydroxyl addition reactions. Concerning the changes in surface properties of CuMF after use, no morphological or structural changes were observed except a small increase in the charge transfer resistance. Based on the changes of terminal surface groups, PMS activation occurred on Fe sites.

Catalytic ozonation of reverse osmosis concentrate from coking wastewater reuse by surface oxidation over Mn-Ce/γ-Al2O3: Effluent organic matter transformation and its catalytic mechanism

Degradation of organics in high-salinity wastewater is beneficial to meeting the requirement of zero liquid discharge for coking wastewater treatment. Creating efficient and stable performance catalysts for high-salinity wastewater treatment is vital in catalytic ozonation process. Compared with ozonation alone, Mn and Ce co-doped γ-Al2O3 could remarkably enhance activities of catalytic ozonation for chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal (38.9%) of brine derived from a two-stage reverse osmosis treatment. Experimental and theoretical calculation results indicate that introducing Mn could increase the active points of catalyst surface, and introducing Ce could optimize d-band electronic structures and promote the electron transport capacity, enhancing HO• bound to the catalyst surface ([HO•]ads) generation. [HO•]ads plays key roles for degrading the intermediates and transfer them into low molecular weight organics, and further decrease COD, molecular weights and number of organics in reverse osmosis concentrate. Under the same reaction conditions, the presence of Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst can reduce ΔO3/ΔCOD by at least 37.6% compared to ozonation alone. Furthermore, Mn-Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalytic ozonation can reduce the ΔO3/ΔCOD from 2.6 of Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalytic ozonation to 0.9 in the case of achieving similar COD removal. Catalytic ozonation has the potential to treat reverse osmosis concentrate derived from bio-treated coking wastewater reclamation.

Epoxiconazole degradation in water samples: a comparative study of Fenton, photo-Fenton, solar photo-Fenton, and solar photolysis processes

Epoxiconazole (EPO) is classified as a persistent organic pollutant due to its ability to persist in the environment for prolonged periods. Its degradation is pivotal in mitigating its environmental impact. This investigation focuses on assessing the degradation of EPO using various methodologies, namely Fenton, photo-Fenton, solar photo-Fenton, and solar photolysis, conducted in both Milli-Q water and groundwater. These experiments encompassed evaluations at both the standard pH typically used in photo-Fenton reactions and the natural pH levels inherent to the respective aqueous environments. Additionally, EPO degradation products were analyzed after a 60-min reaction. Notably, in systems utilizing groundwater, the inclusion of additional iron was unnecessary, as the naturally occurring iron content in the groundwater facilitated the intended processes. Specifically, in Milli-Q water, solar photo-Fenton demonstrated an EPO degradation efficiency of 97%. Furthermore, the substitution of Milli-Q water with groundwater in Fenton-like processes did not significantly affect the efficacy of EPO degradation. These findings underscore the potential of solar photo-Fenton as an economically viable and environmentally sustainable strategy for EPO degradation.

Recent Progress in Anti-Tumor Nanodrugs Based on Tumor Microenvironment Redox Regulation

The growth state of tumor cells is strictly affected by the specific abnormal redox status of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Moreover, redox reactions at the biological level are also central and fundamental to essential energy metabolism reactions in tumors. Accordingly, anti-tumor nanodrugs targeting the disruption of this abnormal redox homeostasis have become one of the hot spots in the field of nanodrugs research due to the effectiveness of TME modulation and anti-tumor efficiency mediated by redox interference. This review discusses the latest research results of nanodrugs in anti-tumor therapy, which regulate the levels of oxidants or reductants in TME through a variety of therapeutic strategies, ultimately breaking the original "stable" redox state of the TME and promoting tumor cell death. With the gradual deepening of study on the redox state of TME and the vigorous development of nanomaterials, it is expected that more anti-tumor nano drugs based on tumor redox microenvironment regulation will be designed and even applied clinically.

Hydrophobicity Promoted Efficient Hydroxyl Radical Generation in Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Oxidation

Hydroxyl radical (•OH) with strong oxidation capability is one of the most important reactive oxygen species. The generation of •OH from superoxide radicals (•O2 -) is an important process in visible-light-driven photocatalysis, but the conversion generally suffers from slow reaction kinetics. Here, a hydrophobicity promoted efficient •OH generation in a visible-light-driven semiconductor-mediated photodegradation reaction is reported. Hydrophobic TiO2 that is synthesized by modifying the TiO2 surface with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer and rhodamine B (RhB) are used as model semiconductors and dye molecules, respectively. The surface hydrophobicity resulted in the formation of a solid-liquid-air triphase interface microenvironment, which increased the local concentration of O2. In the meanwhile, the saturated adsorption quantity of RhB on hydrophobic TiO2 is improved by five-fold than that on untreated TiO2. These advantages increased the density of the conduction band photoelectrons and •O2 - generation, and stimulated the conversion of •O2 - to •OH. This consequently not only increased the kinetics of the photocatalytic reaction by an order of magnitude, but also altered the oxidation route from conventional decolorization to mineralization. This study highlights the importance of surface wettability modulation in boosting •OH generation in visible-light-driven photocatalysis.

Inferring the Molecular Basis for Dissolved Organic Matter Photochemical and Optical Properties

Despite the widespread use of photochemical and optical properties to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM), a significant gap persists in our understanding of the relationship among these properties. This study infers the molecular basis for the optical and photochemical properties of DOM using a comprehensive framework and known structural moieties within DOM. Utilizing Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) as a model DOM, carboxylated aromatics, phenols, and quinones were identified as dominant contributors to the absorbance spectra, and phenols, quinones, aldehydes, and ketones were identified as major contributors to radiative energy pathways. It was estimated that chromophores constitute ∼63% w/w of dissolved organic carbon in SRFA and ∼47% w/w of overall SRFA. Notably, estimations indicate the pool of fluorescent compounds and photosensitizing compounds in SRFA are likely distinct from each other at wavelengths below 400 nm. This perspective offers a practical tool to aid in the identification of probable chemical groups when interpreting optical and photochemical data and challenges the current "black box" thinking. Instead, DOM photochemical and optical properties can be closely estimated by assuming the DOM is composed of a mixture of individual compounds.

Unravelling the Role of Free Radicals in Photocatalysis

Free radicals are increasingly recognized as active intermediate reactive species that can participate in various redox processes, significantly influencing the mechanistic pathways of reactions. Numerous researchers have investigated the generation of one or more distinct photogenerated radicals, proposing various hypotheses to explain the reaction mechanisms. Notably, recent research has demonstrated the emergence of photogenerated radicals in innovative processes, including organic chemical reactions and the photocatalytic dissolution of precious metals. To harness the potential of these free radicals more effectively, it is imperative to consolidate and analyze the processes and action modes of these photogenerated radicals. This conceptual paper delves into the latest advancements in understanding the mechanics of photogenerated radicals.

Triplet State Radical Chemistry: Significance of the Reaction of 3SO2 with HCOOH and HNO3

The triplet excited states of sulfur dioxide can be accessed in the UV region and have a lifetime large enough that they can react with atmospheric trace gases. In this work, we report high level ab initio calculations for the reaction of the a3B1 and b3A2 excited states of SO2 with weak and strong acidic species such as HCOOH and HNO3, aimed to extend the chemistry reported in previous studies with nonacidic H atoms (water and alkanes). The reactions investigated in this work are very versatile and follow different kinds of mechanisms, namely, proton-coupled electron transfer (pcet) and conventional hydrogen atom transfer (hat) mechanisms. The study provides new insights into a general and very important class of excited-state-promoted reactions, opening up interesting chemical perspectives for technological applications of photoinduced H-transfer reactions. It also reveals that atmospheric triplet chemistry is more significant than previously thought.

Direct Determination of Absolute Radical Quantum Yields in Hydroxyl and Sulfate Radical-Based Treatment Processes

The absolute radical quantum yield (Φ ) is a critical parameter to evaluate the efficiency of radical-based processes in engineered water treatment. However, measuring Φ is fraught with challenges, as current quantification methods lack selectivity, specificity, and anti-interference capabilities, resulting in significant error propagation. Herein, we report a direct and reliable time-resolved technique to determine Φ at pH 7.0 for commonly used radical precursors in advanced oxidation processes. For H2O2 and peroxydisulfate (PDS), the values of Φ •OH and Φ SO 4 • - at 266 nm were measured to be 1.10 ± 0.01 and 1.46 ± 0.05, respectively. For peroxymonosulfate (PMS), we developed a new approach to determine Φ • OH PMS with terephthalic acid as a trap-and-trigger probe in the nonsteady state system. For the first time, the Φ • OH PMS value was measured to be 0.56 by the direct method, which is stoichiometrically equal to Φ SO 4 • - PMS (0.57 ± 0.02). Additionally, radical formation mechanisms were elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The theoretical results showed that the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the radical precursors are O-O antibonding orbitals, facilitating the destabilization of the peroxy bond for radical formation. Electronic structures of these precursors were compared, aiming to rationalize the tendency of the Φ values we observed. Overall, this time-resolved technique with specific probes can be used as a reliable tool to determine Φ , serving as a scientific basis for the accurate performance evaluation of diverse radical-based treatment processes.

Photo-induced structural dynamics of o-nitrophenol by ultrafast electron diffraction

The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. This work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer step, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Kinetics and mechanism of the gas-phase reaction of the hydroxyl radical with meta-aminotoluene compound

CONTEXT

An ab initio investigation into the potential energy landscape of the meta-aminotoluene + •OH reaction has been conducted in this study. The calculated results reveal that the reaction channel leading to the product (NHC6H4CH3 + H2O) prevails under the 300-1700 K temperature range, while the reaction path forming the product (NH2C6H4CH2 + H2O) dominates in the higher-temperature region (T ≥ 1800 K). Within the specified temperature range, the product branching ratio for the former declines from 48 to 30%, while the latter shows an increase, reaching 29%. The overall second-order rate constants of the titled reaction obtained at the pressure 760 Torr (N2) can be illustrated by the modified Arrhenius expression of ktotal = 1.46 × 10-13 T0.58 exp[(-0.759 kcal.mol-1)/RT] cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and ktotal = 1.86 × 10-22 T3.24 exp[(-5.086 kcal.mol-1)/RT] cm3 molecule-1 s-1, covering the temperature range of T = 300-600 K and T > 600 K, respectively. The total rate constant at the ambient conditions in this work, 1.43 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, has been found to be roughly one order of magnitude lower than the available experimental data, ~ 1.2 × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, measured by Atkinson et al., Rinke et al., and Witte et al., or the theoretical value, 4.4 × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, and calculated by Abdel-Rahman and co-workers for the aniline + •OH reaction.

METHODS

The structures of reactants, transition states, intermediate states, and products of the meta-aminotoluene + •OH reaction are calculated with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set and the methods DFT/B3LYP and CCSD(T). The rate constants and branching ratios in the 300-2000 K temperature range are calculated with the statistical theoretical TST and RRKM master equation computations including tunneling corrections, with potential energy surface constructed by the CCSD(T)//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ approach.

Multiphase reactions of proteins in the air: Oligomerization, nitration and degradation of bovine serum albumin upon ambient exposure

Proteins in atmospheric aerosol can react with atmospheric pollutants such as ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the atmosphere via the reactions of oxidation, nitration, and cross-linking etc. Currently, the reactions have been more thoroughly studied in the laboratory but rarely investigated in the ambient environment. In this study, we used bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model protein to conduct the exposure experiment in the ambient environment in southern China, an area with increasing oxidative capacity, to investigate the reactions of proteins in the atmosphere. We observed the occurrence of oligomerization, nitration and degradation of BSA upon exposure. The mass fraction of BSA monomer decreased by 5.86 ± 1.61% after exposure and those of dimers, trimers and higher oligomers increased by 1.04 ± 0.49%, 1.37 ± 0.74% and 3.40 ± 1.06%, respectively. Simultaneously, the nitration degrees of monomers, dimers, trimers and higher oligomers increased by 0.42 ± 0.15%, 0.53 ± 0.15%, 0.55 ± 0.28% and 2.15 ± 1.01%, respectively. The results show that oligomerization was significantly affected by O3 and temperature and nitration was jointly affected by O3, temperature and relative humidity, indicating the important role of atmospheric oxidants in the atmospheric reactions of protein. Atmospheric degradation of BSA was observed with the release of free amino acids (FAAs) such as glycine, alanine, serine and methionine. Glycine was the dominant FAA with a molar yield ranging from ∼8% to 33% for BSA. The estimated stoichiometric coefficient (α) of glycine is 10-7-10-6 for the degradation of BSA upon O3. Our observation suggests the occurrence of protein reactions in the oxidative ambient environment, leading to the production of nitrated products, oligomers and low molecular weight products such as peptides and FAAs. This study may deepen the current understanding of the atmospheric reaction mechanisms and reveal the influence of environmental factors in the atmosphere.

Applying the modified UV-activated TOP assay to complex matrices impacted by aqueous film-forming foams

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large chemical family, and numerous chemical species can co-exist in environmental samples, especially those impacted by aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs). Given the limited availability of chemical standards, capturing the total amount of PFAS is challenging. Thus, the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay has been developed to estimate the total amount of PFAS via the oxidative conversion of precursors into perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs). This study aims to enhance the robustness of the TOP assay by replacing heat activation with UV activation. We evaluated the molar yields of known precursors in water in the presence of varying levels of Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) and in two soils. The impact of UV activation was also evaluated in two soils spiked with three well-characterized AFFFs, six AFFF-impacted field soils, and nine rinse samples of AFFF-impacted stainless-steel pipe. In the presence of 100 mg/L SNROM, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (FTS), 8:2 FTS, and N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamidoacetic acid (N-EtFOSAA) in deionized water had good molar recovery as PFCAs (average of 102 ± 9.8 %); at 500 mg/L SNROM, the recovery significantly dropped to an average of 51 ± 19 %. In two soils (with 4 % and 8.8 % organic matter) with individual precursor spikes, the average molar recovery was 101 ± 9.4 %, except N-EtFOSAA, which had a reduced recovery in the soil with 8.8 % organic matter (OM). UV-activated assays outperformed heat-activated ones, especially in AFFF-impacted soils and pipe extract samples, with an average of 1.4-1.5× higher PFCA recovery. In almost all test samples, UV activation resulted in a notable shift towards longer PFCA chain lengths, particularly for samples with high OM content. The study confirmed the advantages of UV activation, including a significantly shortened exposure time (1 h vs. 6 h) and reduced matrix effects from OM due to the dual functions of UV in activating persulfate and photodegrading OM.

Weak Ion-Exchange Based Magnetic Swarm for Targeted Drug Delivery and Chemotherapy

Swimming microrobots that are actuated by multiple stimuli/fields display various intriguing collective behaviors, ranging from phase separation to clustering and giant number fluctuation; however, it is still chanllenging to achieve multiple responses and functionalities within one colloidal system to emulate high environmental adaptability and improved tasking capability of natural swarms. In this work, a weak ion-exchange based swarm is presented that can self-organize and reconfigure by chemical, light, and magnetic fields, showing living crystal, amorphous glass, liquid, chain, and wheel-like structures. By changing the frequency and strength of the rotating magnetic field, various well-controlled and fast transformations are obtained. Experiments show the high adaptability and functionality of the microrobot swarm in delivering drugs in confined spaces, such as narrow channels with turns or obstacles. The drug-carrying swarm exhibits excellent chemtherapy for Hela and CT26 cells due to the pH-enhanced drug release and locomotion. This reconfigurable microswarm provides a new platform for biomedical and environmental applications.

Strong Substance Exchange at Paddy Soil-Water Interface Promotes Nonphotochemical Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species in Overlying Water

Photochemically generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are widespread on the earth's surface under sunlight irradiation. However, the nonphotochemical ROS generation in surface water (e.g., paddy overlying water) has been largely neglected. This work elucidated the drivers of nonphotochemical ROS generation and its spatial distribution in undisturbed paddy overlying water, by combining ROS imaging technology with in situ ROS monitoring. It was found that H2O2 concentrations formed in three paddy overlying waters could reach 0.03-16.9 μM, and the ROS profiles exhibited spatial heterogeneity. The O2 planar-optode indicated that redox interfaces were not always generated at the soil-water interface but also possibly in the water layer, depending on the soil properties. The formed redox interface facilitated a rapid turnover of reducing and oxidizing substances, creating an ideal environment for the generation of ROS. Additionally, the electron-donating capacities of water at soil-water interfaces increased by 4.5-8.4 times compared to that of the top water layers. Importantly, field investigation results confirmed that sustainable •OH generation through nonphotochemical pathways constituted of a significant proportion of total daily production (>50%), suggesting a comparable or even greater role than photochemical ROS generation. In summary, the nonphotochemical ROS generation process reported in this study greatly enhances the understanding of natural ROS production processes in paddy soils.

Mechanistic explanation and influence of molecular structure on chemical degradation and toxicity reduction by hydroxyl radicals

This study explored the influence of structural characteristics of organic contaminants on the degradation during an advanced oxidation process (AOP). The target contaminants were acetaminophen (ACT), bisphenol A (BPA), and tetracycline (TC). The Fenton process was selected as the model process in which major reactive species of hydroxyl radicals in most AOPs are generated for target compound degradation. The optimal reagent concentration ratio was [Fe2+]/[H2O2] = 0.5 mM/0.5 mM in an acidic condition, resulting in 83.49%, 79.01%, and 91.37% removals of ACT, BPA, and TC, respectively. Contrarily, the mineralization rates were apparently lower compared to their respective removal efficiencies. Experimental observation also suggested that the aromatic structure was rather difficult to degrade since their unsaturated electron clouds would hinder the attack of hydroxyl radicals due to electric repulsion. The preferred attacking sites of an aromatic ring differ due to the functional groups and structure symmetry. However, the electrophilic attack of the hydroxyl radical is the major reaction for decomposing aliphatic structures of cyclic or branched organics, resulting in the highest removal and mineralization of TC among these three tested chemicals. In addition, an apparent removal of a contaminant may not necessarily reduce its toxic impact on the environment.

OH-Formation following vibrationally induced reaction dynamics of H2COO

The reaction dynamics of H2COO to form HCOOH and dioxirane as first steps for OH-elimination is quantitatively investigated. Using a machine learned potential energy surface (PES) at the CASPT2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory vibrational excitation along the CH-normal mode νCH with energies up to 40.0 kcal mol-1 (∼5νCH) leads almost exclusively to HCOOH which further decomposes into OH + HCO. Although the barrier to form dioxirane is only 21.4 kcal mol-1 the reaction probability to form dioxirane is two orders of magnitude lower if the CH-stretch mode is excited. Following the dioxirane-formation pathway is facile, however, if the COO-bend vibration is excited together with energies equivalent to ∼2νCH or ∼3νCOO. For OH-formation in the atmosphere the pathway through HCOOH is probably most relevant because the alternative pathways (through dioxirane or formic acid) involve several intermediates that can de-excite through collisions, relax via internal vibrational relaxation (IVR), or pass through loose and vulnerable transition states (formic acid). This work demonstrates how, by selectively exciting particular vibrational modes, it is possible to dial into desired reaction channels with a high degree of specificity.

Explainable ensemble machine learning revealing the effect of meteorology and sources on ozone formation in megacity Hangzhou, China

Megacity Hangzhou, located in eastern China, has experienced severe O3 pollution in recent years, thereby clarifying the key drivers of the formation is essential to suppress O3 deterioration. In this study, the ensemble machine learning model (EML) coupled with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), and positive matrix factorization were used to explore the impact of various factors (including meteorology, chemical components, sources) on O3 formation during the whole period, pollution days, and typical persistent pollution events from April to October in 2021-2022. The EML model achieved better performance than the single model, with R2 values of 0.91. SHAP analysis revealed that meteorological conditions had the greatest effects on O3 variability with the contribution of 57 %-60 % for different pollution levels, and the main drivers were relative humidity and radiation. The effects of chemical factors on O3 formation presented a positive response to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and a negative response to nitrogen oxides (NOx). Oxygenated compounds (OVOCs), alkenes, and aromatic of VOCs subgroups had higher contribution; additionally, the effects of PM2.5 and NOx were also important and increased with the O3 deterioration. The impact of seven emission sources on O3 formation in Hangzhou indicated that vehicle exhaust (35 %), biomass combustion (16 %), and biogenic emissions (12 %) were the dominant drivers. However, for the O3 pollution days, the effects of biomass combustion and biogenic emissions increased. Especially in persistent pollution events with highest O3 concentrations, the magnitude of biogenic emission effect elevated significantly by 156 % compared to the whole situations. Our finding revealed that the combination of the EML model and SHAP analysis could provide a reliable method for rapid diagnosis of the cause of O3 pollution at different event scales, supporting the formulation of control measures.

Dissociation of H2O2 on water surfaces (ice and water droplets)

OH radicals are an important constituent of the atmosphere. Therefore, all reactions that act as a source of OH radicals are important. It is known that photo-dissociation of H2O2 is an important source of OH radicals in the atmosphere. In the present study, using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, we have shown that the H2O2 molecule can dissociate thermally on water droplets, as well as on the surface of ice, to form OH radicals. Furthermore, the dissociation of H2O2 was found to be very fast (less than 50 fs) on the ice surface compared with on the water droplets. We believe this route for the formation of OH radicals could be more critical than photo-dissociation, as it can take place both during the day and at night, but further studies with more sophisticated theoretical approaches or experiments are required to confirm this hypothesis.

Photoproduction of reactive intermediates from dissolved organic matter in coastal seawater around an urban metropolis in South China: Characterization and predictive modeling

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important photochemical precursor to reactive intermediates (RIs) (e.g., excited triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (3CDOM⁎), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and singlet oxygen (1O2)) in aquatic systems to drive the photodegradation of contaminants. There have been limited studies on the photoproduction of RIs in coastal seawater CDOM in Asia, which impedes our ability to model the lifetimes and fates of contaminants in these coastal seawater systems. Hong Kong is an urban metropolis in South China, whose coastal seawater is susceptible to anthropogenic activities from the surrounding areas and the nearby Pearl River. We investigated the photoproduction of RIs in seawater around Hong Kong during the wet vs. dry season. Higher intensities of fluorescent components, dissolved organic carbon concentration ([DOC]), apparent quantum yields of RIs (ΦRIs), and steady-state concentrations of photogenerated RIs ([RIs]ss) were observed for samples collected in the areas closest to the Pearl River during the wet season. Lower humification degrees and ΦRIs but higher intensities of fluorescent components and [RIs]ss were generally observed for the wet season samples compared to the dry season samples. Statistical analysis revealed strong significant correlations (Spearman |r| > 0.6, p < 0.05) between ΦRIs and the absorbance properties (including the absorbance ratio E2:E3, spectral slope coefficients S350-400, and spectral slope ratio SR) of CDOM, and between [RIs]ss and the quantity-reflected properties (including the fluorescence intensity of humic-like components) of CDOM. Our modeling analyses combining orthogonal partial least squares and stepwise multiple linear regression showed excellent prediction strengths for [1O2]ss and [3CDOM⁎]ss (R2adj > 0.7) when [DOC] and the chemical and optical properties of CDOM were used as predictor variables. These modeling results demonstrate the feasibility of predicting the concentrations and quantum yields of RIs in seawater around Hong Kong, and potentially other coastal cities in South China, from easily measurable chemical and optical properties.

Role of NLRP3 in Parkinson's disease: Specific activation especially in dopaminergic neurons

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with motor symptoms like bradykinesia, tremors, and balance issues. The pathology is recognized by progressively degenerative nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons (DANs) loss. Its exact pathogenesis is unclear. Numerous studies have shown that nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) contributes to the pathogenesis of PD. Previous studies have demonstrated that the over-activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in microglia indirectly leads to the loss of DANs, which can worsen PD. In recent years, autopsy analyses of PD patients and studies in PD models have revealed upregulation of NLRP3 expression within DANs and demonstrated that activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in neurons is sufficient to drive neuronal loss, whereas microglial activation occurs after neuronal death, and that inhibition of intraneuronal NLRP3 inflammasome prevents degeneration of DANs. In this review, we provide research evidence related to NLRP3 inflammasome in DANs in PD as well as focus on possible mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in neurons, aiming to provide a new way of thinking about the pathogenesis and prevention of PD.

Revealing the Contribution of Interfacial Processes to Atmospheric Oxidizing Capacity in Haze Chemistry

The atmospheric oxidizing capacity is the most important driving force for the chemical transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere. Traditionally, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity mainly depends on the concentration of O3 and other gaseous oxidants. However, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity based on gas-phase oxidation cannot accurately describe the explosive growth of secondary particulate matter under complex air pollution. From the chemical perspective, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity mainly comes from the activation of O2, which can be achieved in both gas-phase and interfacial processes. In the heterogeneous or multiphase formation pathways of secondary particulate matter, the enhancement of oxidizing capacity ascribed to the O2/H2O-involved interfacial oxidation and hydrolysis processes is an unrecognized source of atmospheric oxidizing capacity. Revealing the enhanced oxidizing capacity due to interfacial processes in high-concentration particulate matter environments and its contribution to the formation of secondary pollution are critical in understanding haze chemistry. The accurate evaluation of atmospheric oxidizing capacity ascribed to interfacial processes is also an important scientific basis for the implementation of PM2.5 and O3 collaborative control in China and around the world.

Photochemical behaviors of sludge extracellular polymeric substances from bio-treated effluents towards antibiotic degradation: Distinguish the main photosensitive active component and its environmental implication

Activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances (ASEPSs) comprise most dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the tail water. However, the understanding of the link between the photolysis of antibiotic and the photo-reactivity/photo-persistence of ASEPS components is limited. This study first investigated the photochemical behaviors of ASEPS's components (humic acids (HA), hydrophobic substances (HOS) and hydrophilic substances (HIS)) separated from municipal sludge's EPS (M-EPS) and nitrification sludge's EPS (N-EPS) in the photolysis of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The results showed that 60% of SDZ was removed by the M-EPS, but the effect in the separated components was weakened, and only 24% - 39% was degraded. However, 58% of SDZ was cleaned by HOS in N-EPS, which was 23% higher than full N-EPS. M-EPS components had lower steady-state concentrations of triplet intermediates (3EPS*), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) than M-EPS, but N-EPS components had the highest concentrations (5.96 ×10-15, 8.44 ×10-18, 4.56 ×10-13 M, respectively). The changes of CO, C-O and O-CO groups in HA and HOS potentially correspond to reactive specie's generation. These groups change little in HIS, which may make it have radiation resistance. HCO-3 and NO-3 decreased the indirect photolysis of SDZ, and its by-product N-(2-Pyrimidinyl)1,4-benzenediamine presents high environmental risk.

Molecular mechanism of the metal-independent production of hydroxyl radicals by thiourea dioxide and H2O2

It is well-known that highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (HO•) can be produced by the classic Fenton system and our recently discovered haloquinone/H2O2 system, but rarely from thiol-derivatives. Here, we found, unexpectedly, that HO• can be generated from H2O2 and thiourea dioxide (TUO2), a widely used and environmentally friendly bleaching agent. A carbon-centered radical and sulfite were detected and identified as the transient intermediates, and urea and sulfate as the final products, with the complementary application of electron spin-trapping, oxygen-18 isotope labeling coupled with HPLC/MS analysis. Density functional theory calculations were conducted to further elucidate the detailed pathways for HO• production. Taken together, we proposed that the molecular mechanism for HO• generation by TUO2/H2O2: TUO2 tautomerizes from sulfinic acid into ketone isomer (TUO2-K) through proton transfer, then a nucleophilic addition of H2O2 on the S atom of TUO2-K, forming a S-hydroperoxide intermediate TUO2-OOH, which dissociates homolytically to produce HO•. Our findings represent the first experimental and computational study on an unprecedented new molecular mechanism of HO• production from simple thiol-derived sulfinic acids, which may have broad chemical, environmental, and biomedical significance for future research on the application of the well-known bleaching agent and its analogs.

Analytical methods for selectively determining hydrogen peroxide, peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate in their binary mixtures

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and peroxydisulfate (PDS) are key bulk oxidants in many advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for treating chemically contaminated water. In some systems these peroxides may coexist in solution either through intentional co-addition or their inadvertent formation (especially H2O2) due to reaction chemistry. While many analytical methods to determine these peroxides individually have been established, mutual interference among the peroxides in such methods has seldom been evaluated, and new methods or variants of established methods to selectively determine peroxides in binary mixtures are lacking. We re-examined five established colorimetric methods-the Permanganate, Titanium Oxalate (Ti-oxalate), Iodide, N.N‑diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD), and 2,20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate (ABTS) methods-for mutual interference among peroxides and devised variants of these methods for selectively quantifying one peroxide in the presence of another. Hydrogen peroxide can be selectively determined by the Permanganate method at short reaction time; by the Ti-oxalate method; by the DPD method with added peroxidase (POD); or by the ABTS method with added POD. PMS can be selectively determined by the Iodide method; by the DPD or ABTS methods with added iodide ion as catalyst; or by the DPD method with added catalase (CAT) (with co-existing H2O2 but not PDS). The DPD method can be used to determine PDS without interference by H2O2 and-provided the sample is pretreated with l-histidine-without interference by PMS. The recommended methods were successfully applied to binary peroxide mixtures in complex waters, including a tap water and a synthetic water. Overall, the new selective methods will assist mechanistic investigation of AOPs based on these peroxides and support efforts to apply them commercially.

A fluorescent sensor based on single band bright red luminescent core-shell UCNPs for the high-sensitivity detection of glucose and glutathione

As the reliable biomarkers to evaluate the diabetes and neurological disease, sensitive and accurate detection of glucose and glutathione (GSH) in biological samples is necessary for early precaution and diagnosis of related-diseases. The single red upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) especially with core-shell structure can penetrate deeper biological tissues and cause less energy loss and thus have higher sensitivity and accuracy. Additionally, an enzyme-controlled cascade signal amplification (ECSAm) strategy will further enhance sensitivity. Herein, using single red UCNPs with core-shell structure as the luminescent material, a fluorescent sensor based on ECSAm was developed for the highly sensitive and accurate detection of glucose and GSH. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection for glucose and GSH by fluorescent method were 0.03 μM and 0.075 μM, separately. This assay was used to analyze the content of glucose and GSH in serum samples, and the obtained data was close to that of commercial blood glucose and GSH detection kit. The developed sensor platform based on single red UCNPs with core-shell structure and ECSAm can be a promising method for the accurate and sensitive detection of glucose and GSH in biological samples.

Influence of Fuel Properties on the Light Absorption of Fresh and Laboratory-Aged Atmospheric Brown Carbon Produced from Realistic Combustion of Boreal Peat and Spruce Foliage

Climate change has exacerbated fire activity in the boreal region. Consequently, smoldering boreal peatland fires are an increasingly important source of light-absorbing atmospheric organic carbon ("brown carbon"; BrC). To date, however, BrC from this source remains largely unstudied, which limits our ability to predict its climate impact. Here, we use size-exclusion chromatography coupled with diode array UV-vis detection to examine the molecular-size-dependent light absorption properties of fresh and photoaged aqueous BrC extracts collected during laboratory combustion of boreal peat and live spruce foliage. The atmospheric stability of BrC extracts varies with chromophore molecular size and fuel type: in particular, the high-molecular-weight fractions of both peat- and spruce-BrC are more resistant to photobleaching than their corresponding low-molecular-weight fractions, and total light absorption by peat-BrC persists over longer illumination timescales than that of spruce-BrC. Importantly, the BrC molecular size distribution itself varies with fuel properties (e.g., moisture content) and to an even greater extent with fuel type. Overall, our findings suggest that the accurate estimation of BrC radiative forcing, and the overall climate impact of wildfires, will require atmospheric models to consider the impact of regional diversity in vegetation/fuel types.

AI-enhanced chemical paradigm: From molecular graphs to accurate prediction and mechanism

The development of accurate and interpretable models for predicting reaction constants of organic compounds with hydroxyl radicals is vital for advancing quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) in pollutant degradation. Methods like molecular descriptors, molecular fingerprinting, and group contribution methods have limitations, as traditional machine learning struggles to capture all intramolecular information simultaneously. To address this, we established an integrated graph neural network (GNN) with approximately 12 million learnable parameters. GNN represents atoms as nodes and chemical bonds as edges, thus transforming molecules into a graph structures, effectively capturing microscopic properties while depicting atom connectivity in non-Euclidean space. Our datasets comprise 1401 pollutants to develop an integrated GNN model with Bayesian optimization, the model achieves root mean square errors of 0.165, 0.172, and 0.189 on the training, validation, and test datasets, respectively. Furthermore, we assess molecular structure similarity using molecular fingerprint to enhance the model's applicability. Afterwards, we propose a gradient weight mapping method for model explainability, uncovering the key functional groups in chemical reactions in artificial intelligence perspective, which would boost chemistry through artificial intelligence extreme arithmetic power.

A novel iron sulfide phase with remarkable hydroxyl radical generation capability for contaminants degradation

The hydroxyl radical (·OH) stands as one of the most potent oxidizing agents, capable of engaging in non-selective and instantaneous reactions with contaminants in water. Herein, we present a novel iron sulfide phase (S-FeS) characterized by an unprecedented structure, accompanied by its remarkable hydroxyl radical generation capability and contaminant degradation efficiency surpassing that of the conventional metastable iron sulfide phase, namely, the Mackinawite (FeS). In comparison to FeS, S-FeS exhibits enhanced degradation kinetics and higher efficacy in the removal of methylene blue, ciprofloxacin, and trivalent arsenic. Utilizing density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we postulate the mechanism for the exceptional contaminant degradation performance of S-FeS to be attributed to the increased exposure of the highly reactive (110) crystal facets. This research uncovers a new metastable phase that expands the polymorphisms within the iron sulfide family and showcases its capability for driving the oxygen reduction reaction.

Dissolved organic matter promoted hydroxyl radical formation and phenanthrene attenuation during oxygenation of iron-pillared montmorillonites

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receives increasing attentions. However, information on dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different types, concentrations, and molecular weights (MWs) in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation during mineral oxygenation remain unclear. In this study, four iron-pillared montmorillonites (IPMs) and two DOM samples [e.g., humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)] were prepared to explore the HO• formation and phenanthrene attenuation during the oxygenation of IPMs in the presence or absence of DOMs. Results showed that iron-pillared and high-temperature calcination procedures extended the interlayer domain of IPMs, which provided favorable conditions for a high HO• production from 1293 to 14537 μmol kg-1. The surface-absorbed/low crystalline Fe(Ⅱ) was the predominant Fe(Ⅱ) fractionations for HO• production, and presence of DOMs significantly enhanced the HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation. Moreover, regardless of the types and concentrations, the low MW (LMW, <1 kDa) fraction within DOM pool contributed highest to HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation, followed by the bulk and high MW (HMW-, 1 kDa∼0.45 μm) fractions, and FA exhibited more efficient effects in promoting HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation than HA. The fluorescent spectral analysis further revealed that phenolic-like fluorophores in LMW-fraction were the main substances responsible for the enhanced HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation. The results deepen our understandings toward the behaviors and fate of aquatic HO• and contaminants, and also provide technical guidance for the remediation of contaminated environments.

Study on preparation of UV-CDs/Zeolite-4A/TiO2 composite photocatalyst coupled with ultraviolet-irradiation and their application of photocatalytic degradation of dyes

In this work, ultraviolet irradiation was employed to assist in the preparation of a novel photocatalyst composite in the form of carbon dots/zeolite-4A/TiO2, using coal tailings as the source of silicon-aluminum and carbon. The composite was designed for the degradation of methylene blue under 500 W of UV light irradiation. Zeolite-4A was used as a support for the well-dispersed carbon dots and TiO2 nanoparticles. The as-prepared composites were subjected to thorough characterization, confirming the successful formation of zeolite-4A with a cube structure, along with the loading of TiO2 and coal-based CDs in the composites. The experimental results demonstrated that the UV-CZTs nanocomposites exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency of 90.63% within 90 min for MB. The corresponding rate constant was exceptionally high at 0.0331 min-1, surpassing that of the Dark-CZTs and pure TiO2. This significant enhancement was possibly due to the synergistic effect of adsorption photocatalysis of the UV-CZTs, combined with the excellent electron-accepting capabilities of the coal-based CDs, which led to highly improved charge separation. An investigation of the spent photocatalyst's recyclability revealed that it retained a remarkable 82.94% MB removal efficiency after five consecutive cycles, signifying the stability of the composite. Trapping experiments also elucidated the primary reactive species responsible for MB degradation, which were identified as photo-generated holes and ⸱O2- species. By this process, the hydroxyl radicals generated in the system successfully promoted the transformation of coal tailings to coal-based zeolite and coal-based CDs. Coal-based zeolite served as an excellent carrier of titanium dioxide, which improved its dispersibility. The inhibition of e--h+ recombination of titanium dioxide by introducing coal-based CDs improved the photocatalytic ability of titanium dioxide. Through this study, coal tailings, as a coal processing waste, were transformed into high-value materials, and relevant photocatalytic composite materials could be prepared with broad application prospects.

Antimicrobial research of carbohydrate polymer- and protein-based hydrogels as reservoirs for the generation of reactive oxygen species: A review

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in biological milieu. Recently, the rapid growth in our understanding of ROS and their promise in antibacterial applications has generated tremendous interest in the combination of ROS generators with bulk hydrogels. Hydrogels represent promising supporters for ROS generators and can locally confine the nanoscale distribution of ROS generators whilst also promoting cellular integration via biomaterial-cell interactions. This review highlights recent efforts and progress in developing hydrogels derived from biological macromolecules with embedded ROS generators with a focus on antimicrobial applications. Initially, an overview of passive and active antibacterial hydrogels is provided to show the significance of proper hydrogel selection and design. These are followed by an in-depth discussion of the various approaches for ROS generation in hydrogels. The structural engineering and fabrication of ROS-laden hydrogels are given with a focus on their biomedical applications in therapeutics and diagnosis. Additionally, we discuss how a compromise needs to be sought between ROS generation and removal for maximizing the efficacy of therapeutic treatment. Finally, the current challenges and potential routes toward commercialization in this rapidly evolving field are discussed, focusing on the potential translation of laboratory research outcomes to real-world clinical outcomes.

Developing a GC-EI-MS/MS method for quantifying warfarin and five hydroxylated metabolites generated by the Fenton reaction

Since the 1950s, Warfarin has been used globally as both a prescription drug and a rodenticide. Research has shown that warfarin and other rodenticides are present in the environment and food chain. However, emerging contaminants are subject to degradation by biotic and abiotic processes and advanced oxidation processes. In some cases, detecting the parent compound may not be possible due to the formation of structurally changed species. This approach aims to identify hydroxylated transformation products of warfarin in a laboratory setting, even after the parent compound has undergone degradation. Therefore, the Fenton reaction is utilized to insert hydroxylation into the parent compound, warfarin, by hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals generated by Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Using multiple reaction monitoring, a GC-MS/MS method, incorporating isotopically labeled reference compounds, is used to quantify the expected derivatized species. The analytes are derivatized using trimethyl-3-trifluoromethyl phenyl ammonium hydroxide, and the derivatization yield of warfarin is determined by using isotopically labeled reference compounds. The method has a linear working range of 30 to 1800 ng/mL, with detection limits ranging from 18.7 to 67.0 ng/mL. The analytes are enriched using a C18-SPE step, and the recovery for each compound is calculated. The Fenton reaction generates all preselected hydroxylated transformation products of warfarin. The method successfully identifies that 4'-Me-O-WAR forms preferentially under the specified experimental conditions. By further optimizing the SPE clean-up procedures, this GC-MS-based method will be suitable for detecting transformation products in more complex matrices, such as environmental water samples. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of warfarin's degradation and offers a robust analytical tool for investigating its transformation products.

Advanced oxidation and biological integrated processes for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment: A review

The stress of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) discharging to water bodies and the environment due to increased industrialization has reduced the availability of clean water. This poses a potential health hazard to animals and human life because water contamination is a great issue to the climate, plants, humans, and aquatic habitats. Pharmaceutical compounds are quantified in concentrations ranging from ng/Lto μg/L in aquatic environments worldwide. According to (Alsubih et al., 2022), the concentrations of carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, Lutvastatin, ciprofloxacin, and lorazepam were 616-906 ng/L, 16,532-21635 ng/L, 694-2068 ng/L, 734-1178 ng/L, and 2742-3775 ng/L respectively. Protecting and preserving our environment must be well-driven by all sectors to sustain development. Various methods have been utilized to eliminate the emerging pollutants, such as adsorption and biological and advanced oxidation processes. These methods have their benefits and drawbacks in the removal of pharmaceuticals. Successful wastewater treatment can save the water bodies; integrating green initiatives into the main purposes of actor firms, combined with continually periodic awareness of the current and potential implications of environmental/water pollution, will play a major role in water conservation. This article reviews key publications on the adsorption, biological, and advanced oxidation processes used to remove pharmaceutical products from the aquatic environment. It also sheds light on the pharmaceutical adsorption capability of adsorption, biological and advanced oxidation methods, and their efficacy in pharmaceutical concentration removal. A research gap has been identified for researchers to explore in order to eliminate the problem associated with pharmaceutical wastes. Therefore, future study should focus on combining advanced oxidation and adsorption processes for an excellent way to eliminate pharmaceutical products, even at low concentrations. Biological processes should focus on ideal circumstances and microbial processes that enable the simultaneous removal of pharmaceutical compounds and the effects of diverse environments on removal efficiency.

Air quality and health co-benefits of vehicle electrification and emission controls in the most populated United States urban hubs: Insights from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston

Transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) is a prominent strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, given the complexity of atmospheric chemistry, the nuanced implications on air quality are yet to be fully understood. Our study delved into changes in PM2.5, ozone, and their associated precursors in major US urban areas, considering various electrification and mitigation scenarios. In the full electrification (FullE) scenario, PM2.5 reduction peaked at values between 0.34 and 2.29 μg.m-3 across distinct regions. Yet, certain areas in eastern Los Angeles exhibited a surprising uptick in PM2.5, reaching as much as 0.67 μg.m-3. This phenomenon was linked to a surge in secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), resulting from shifting NOx/VOCs (volatile organic compounds) dynamics and a spike in hydroxyl radical (OH) concentrations. The FullE scenario ushered in marked reductions in both NOx and maximum daily average 8-h (MDA8) ozone concentrations, with maximum levels ranging from 14.00 to 32.34 ppb and 2.58-9.58 ppb, respectively. However, certain instances revealed growths in MDA8 ozone concentrations, underscoring the intricacies of air quality management. From a health perspective, in the FullE scenario, New York, Chicago, and Houston stand to potentially avert 796, 328, and 157 premature deaths/month, respectively. Los Angeles could prevent 104 premature deaths/month in the HighE-BL scenario, representing a 29 % EV share for light-duty vehicles. However, the FullE scenario led to a rise in mortality in Los Angeles due to increased PM2.5 and MDA8 ozone levels. Economically, the FullE scenario projects health benefits amounting to 51-249 million $/day for New York, Chicago, and Houston. In contrast, Los Angeles may face economic downturns of up to 18 million $/day. In conclusion, while EV integration has the potential to improve urban air quality, offering substantial health and economic advantages, challenges persist. Our results emphasize the pivotal role of VOCs management, providing policymakers with insights for adaptable and efficient measures.

Field Quantification of Hydroxyl Radicals by Flow-Injection Chemiluminescence Analysis with a Portable Device

Hydroxyl radical (•OH) is a powerful oxidant abundantly found in nature and plays a central role in numerous environmental processes. On-site detection of •OH is highly desirable for real-time assessments of •OH-centered processes and yet is restrained by a lack of an analysis system suitable for field applications. Here, we report the development of a flow-injection chemiluminescence analysis (FIA-CL) system for the continuous field detection of •OH. The system is based on the reaction of •OH with phthalhydrazide to generate 5-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, which emits chemiluminescence (CL) when oxidatively activated by H2O2 and Cu3+. The FIA-CL system was successfully validated using the Fenton reaction as a standard •OH source. Unlike traditional absorbance- or fluorescence-based methods, CL detection could minimize interference from an environmental medium (e.g., organic matter), therefore attaining highly sensitive •OH detection (limits of detection and quantification = 0.035 and 0.12 nM, respectively). The broad applications of FIA-CL were illustrated for on-site 24 h detection of •OH produced from photochemical processes in lake water and air, where the temporal variations on •OH productions (1.0-12.2 nM in water and 1.5-37.1 × 107 cm-3 in air) agreed well with sunlight photon flux. Further, the FIA-CL system enabled field 24 h field analysis of •OH productions from the oxidation of reduced substances triggered by tidal fluctuations in coastal soils. The superior analytical capability of the FIA-CL system opens new opportunities for monitoring •OH dynamics under field conditions.

Photolysis of Dissolved Organic Matter over Hematite Nanoplatelets

Solar photoexcitation of chromophoric groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM), when coupled to photoreduction of ubiquitous Fe(III)-oxide nanoparticles, can significantly accelerate DOM degradation in near-surface terrestrial systems, but the mechanisms of these reactions remain elusive. We examined the photolysis of chromophoric soil DOM coated onto hematite nanoplatelets featuring (001) exposed facets using a combination of molecular spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) computations. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) probed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed that both singlet oxygen and superoxide are the predominant ROS responsible for DOM degradation. DFT calculations confirmed that Fe(II) on the hematite (001) surface, created by interfacial electron transfer from photoexcited chromophores in DOM, can reduce dioxygen molecules to superoxide radicals (•O2-) through a one-electron transfer process. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FTICR-MS) spectroscopies show that the association of DOM with hematite enhances the cleavage of aromatic groups during photodegradation. The findings point to a pivotal role for organic matter at the interface that guides specific ROS generation and the subsequent photodegradation process, as well as the prospect of using ROS signatures as a forensic tool to help interpret more complicated field-relevant systems.

Selective α-oxidation of amides via visible-light-driven iron catalysis

Hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) as one of the highly reactive species can react unselectively with a wide range of chemicals. The ˙OH radicals are typically generated under harsh conditions. Herein, we report hydroxyl radical-induced selective N-α C(sp3)-H bond oxidation of amides under greener and mild conditions via an Fe(NO3)3·9H2O catalyst inner sphere pathway upon irradiation with a 30 W blue LED light strip (λ = 455 nm) using NaBrO3 as the oxidant. This protocol exhibited high chemoselectivity and excellent functional group tolerance. A preliminary mechanism investigation demonstrated that the iron catalyst afforded hydroxyl radicals via the visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH) of iron complexes followed by a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process to realize this transformation.

Activatable Probes for Ratiometric Imaging of Endogenous Biomarkers In Vivo

Dynamic variations in the concentration and abnormal distribution of endogenous biomarkers are strongly associated with multiple physiological and pathological states. Therefore, it is crucial to design imaging systems capable of real-time detection of dynamic changes in biomarkers for the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases. Recently, ratiometric imaging has emerged as a widely used technique for sensing and imaging of biomarkers due to its advantage of circumventing the limitations inherent to conventional intensity-dependent signal readout methods while also providing built-in self-calibration for signal correction. Here, the recent progress of ratiometric probes and their applications in sensing and imaging of biomarkers are outlined. Ratiometric probes are classified according to their imaging mechanisms, and ratiometric photoacoustic imaging, ratiometric optical imaging including photoluminescence imaging and self-luminescence imaging, ratiometric magnetic resonance imaging, and dual-modal ratiometric imaging are discussed. The applications of ratiometric probes in the sensing and imaging of biomarkers such as pH, reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), glutathione (GSH), gas molecules, enzymes, metal ions, and hypoxia are discussed in detail. Additionally, this Review presents an overview of challenges faced in this field along with future research directions.
