Interactions of dissolved organic matter with natural and engineered inorganic colloids: a review

Influence of natural organic matter on the aggregation dynamics of biochar colloids derived from various feedstocks

Abundant biochar colloids (BCs) produced from a wide range of feedstocks, resulting from forest fires, agricultural production, and environmental restoration, exhibit varying aggregation behaviors influenced by feedstock type and natural organic matter. However, the impact of natural organic matter on the colloidal stability of BCs derived from different feedstocks remains poorly understood. In this study, six selected biochars were derived from various feedstocks as follows: sewage sludge (SS), rice husk (RH), oil seed rape straw pellets (OSR), wheat straw pellets (WS), miscanthus straw pellets (MS) and softwood pellets (SW). The colloidal stability of BCs, with the exogenous addition of organic matter, was further determined. The order of critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of BCs with the presence of humic acid (HA) was as follows: RH (989.48 mM) < MS (1084.69 mM) < SS (1149.76 mM) < WS (1338.99 mM) < OSR (2402.98 mM) < SW (3151.32 mM). This order was significantly positively correlated with the specific surface area and negatively correlated with the ash content of the bulk biochar. Compared to HA, bovine serum albumin (BSA) more effectively inhibited the aggregation behavior of BCs due to steric hindrance. The initial aggregation rate constant (k) of BCs at 3000 mM NaCl was as follows: MS (0.238 nm/s) > OSR (0.142 nm/s) > WS (0.128 nm/s) > SS (0.126 nm/s) > RH (0.118 nm/s) > SW (0.112 nm/s). The stabilizing effects of BSA on biochar colloids were independent of the physicochemical properties of bulk biochar. In the presence of BSA, a thin layer of protein corona significantly enhanced the stability of biochar colloids, particularly the BCs derived from MS. Our results underscore the importance of considering feedstock resources and natural organic matter type when assessing the aggregation and potential risks of BCs in aquatic systems.

Mechanisms underlying the detrimental impact of micro(nano)plastics on the stability of aerobic granular sludge: Interactions between micro(nano)plastics and extracellular polymeric substances

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) present in wastewater can pose a negative impact to aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Herein, this study found that MPs and NPs (20 mg/L) deteriorated the sludge settleability and granule integrity, resulting in a 15.7 % and 21.9 % decrease in the total nitrogen removal efficiency of the AGS system, respectively. This was possibly due to the reduction of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content. The subsequent analysis revealed that tyrosine, tryptophan, and humic acid-like substances in EPS exhibited a higher propensity for chemisorption and inhomogeneous multilayer adsorption onto NPs compared to MPs. The binding of EPS onto the surface of plastic particles increased the electronegativity of the MPs, but facilitated the aggregation of NPs through reducing the electrostatic repulsion, thereby mitigating the adverse effects of MPs/NPs on the AGS stability. Additionally, comprehensive analysis of the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory indicated that the suppressed aggregation of microorganisms was the internal mechanisms contributing to the inadequate stability of AGS induced by MPs/NPs. This study provides novel insights into the detrimental mechanisms of MPs/NPs on the AGS stability, highlighting the key role of EPS in maintaining the structural stability of AGS when exposed to MPs/NPs.

Combined high-rate contact stabilization and chemically enhanced primary treatment for enhanced recovery of organic matter and biogas from sewage

This study examined integrating high-rate contact stabilization (HRCS) and chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) for wastewater to improve the carbon recovery rate (CRR). Enhancing chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was hypothesized to improve the CRR. The evaluation covered serial HRCS-CEPT, serial CEPT-HRCS, and single-stage carbon recovery (Single-CR). The COD removal efficiencies for individual HRCS and CEPT were 50.3 % and 56.2 %, respectively. The serial CEPT-HRCS system failed in the HRCS process due to poor settling, resulting in microbial washout. However, the serial HRCS-CEPT system achieved the highest COD removal efficiency (84.5 %). The Single-CR system exhibited the highest CRR of 0.780 ± 0.083 g-CODCH4/g-CODinf, identifying it as the most promising process for energy-positive wastewater treatment. The selective pressure in the high-rate system resulted in a simplified and specialized bacterial community, mainly comprising microorganisms with high polyhydroxyalkanoate storage capacity, such as Lactococcus sp., Enterobacter sp., and Acinetobacter sp.

Organic matter excreted by the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila and its effects on the bioaccumulation of nanoparticles

Although organic matter (exudate) excreted by aquatic organisms is an important component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the natural environment, its potential effects on the bioaccumulation of nanoparticles (NPs) remain unclear. In the present study, we examined the effects of the exudates from the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila on the bioaccumulation (including uptake and cell surface adsorption) of iron oxide (Fe2O3, polyacrylate coated) and silica (SiO2) NPs in T. thermophila. The exudates were mostly (93.6 %, in carbon) composed of < 1-kDa molecules (e.g., lipids). When the exudates were mixed with the NPs, significant adsorption occurred on SiO2 NPs but not on Fe2O3 NPs. Independent of their adsorption by the NPs, the exudates significantly inhibited the bioaccumulation of both SiO2 NPs and Fe2O3 NPs by T. thermophila. This inhibitory effect was shown to be mainly due to their inhibition of NP adsorption on the cell surface. By contrast, the exudates had negligible effects on the uptake of either NP type, most likely due to their low molecular weight. Since DOM in the aquatic environment is dominated by molecules < 1 kDa, the potential effects of low-molecular-weight DOM, such as exudates from aquatic organisms, on the bioaccumulation of NPs merits greater attention. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Nanoparticles (NPs) are hazardous materials widespread in the natural environment. Previous studies showed that dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments determine the environmental behavior and ecological effects of NPs. Although organic matter (exudate) excreted by aquatic organisms is an important component of DOM, its potential effects on the bioaccumulation of NPs remain unclear. In the present study, we found that the exudates inhibited the cell-surface adsorption of NPs but had no effects on NP uptake, as different from the well-known effects of DOM on NP bioaccumulation. This finding merits attention during evaluations of the environmental risks of NPs.

Influence of macromolecules and electrolytes on heteroaggregation kinetics of polystyrene nanoplastics and goethite nanoparticles in aquatic environments

Fate and transport of nanoplastics in aquatic environments are affected by their heteroaggregation with minerals in the presence of macromolecules. This study investigated the heteroaggregation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) with goethite nanoparticles (GNPs) under the influence of macromolecules [humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and DNA] and electrolytes. Under 1 mg C/L macromolecule, raising electrolyte concentration promoted heteroaggregation via charge screening, except that calcium bridging with HA also enhanced heteroaggregation at CaCl2 concentration above 5 mM. At all NaCl concentrations and CaCl2 concentration below 5 mM, 1 mg C/L macromolecules strongly retarded heteroaggregation, ranking BSA > DNA > HA. Raising macromolecule concentration strengthened such stabilization effect of all macromolecules in NaCl solution and that of DNA and BSA in CaCl2 solution by enhancing steric hindrance. However, 0.1 mg C/L BSA slightly promoted heteroaggregation in CaCl2 solution due to stronger electrostatic attraction than steric hindrance. In CaCl2 solution, raising HA concentration strengthened its destabilization effect via calcium bridging. Macromolecules having more compact globular structure and higher molecular weight may exert greater steric hindrance to inhibit heteroaggregation more effectively. This study provides new insights on the effects of macromolecules and electrolytes on heteroaggregation between nanoplastics and iron minerals in aquatic environments.

Analysis of urban composite non-point source pollution characteristics and its contribution to river DOM based on EEMs and FT-ICR MS

Urban composite non-point source (UCNPS) has an increasing degree of influence on the urban receiving waters. However, there remains a dearth of precise techniques to characterize and evaluate the contribution of UCNPS. Therefore, this study developed a source analytical methodology system based fluorescence excitation-emission matrices spectroscopy (EEMs) and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS).Specifically, it utilized parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), end-member mixing analysis (EMMA), and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) to analysis UCNPS pollution characteristics and quantify its contributions to river DOM. The results of its application in typical hilly and plain urban within the Yangtze River Basin, China revealed that road and roof runoff exhibited high aromaticity and humic-like content, and the characteristics of pipe sediment was similar with domestic sewage. The component of Rivers had sequences of changes under rainfall perturbations. But terrestrial humic-like represented the initial input in all cases, and it can provide some indication of UCNPS input. The results of EMMA showed that the contribution of road runoff, roof runoff, pipeline sediment and domestic sewage to river DOM was 9.0 %-36.0 %, 2.6 %-19.1 %, 2.3 %-28.8 % and 5.9 %-25.9 %, respectively, and the specific contribution was mainly affected by rainfall level, regional terrain and drainage system. The methodology system of this study can provide technical support for the traceability and precise control of UCNPS pollution.

Tailor-made polymer tracers reveal the role of clay minerals on colloidal transport in carbonate media

HYPOTHESIS

Host rock weathering and incipient pedogenesis result in the exposition of minerals, e.g., clay minerals in sedimentary limestones. Once exposed, these minerals provide the surfaces for fluid-solid interactions that control the fate of dissolved or suspended compounds such as organic matter and colloids. However, the functional and compositional diversity of organic matter and colloids limits the assessment of reactivity and availability of clay mineral interfaces. Such assessment demands a mobile compound with strong affinity to clay surfaces that is alien to the subsurface.

EXPERIMENT

We approached this challenge by using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as interfacial tracer in limestone weathering experiments.

FINDINGS

PEG adsorption and transport was dependent on the availability of clay mineral surfaces and carbonate dissolution dynamics. In addition, PEG adsorption featured adsorption-desorption hysteresis which retained PEG mass on clay mineral surfaces. This resulted in different PEG transport for experiments conducted consecutively in the same porous medium. As such, PEG transport was reconstructed with a continuum-scale model parametrized by a Langmuir-type isotherm including hysteresis. Thus, we quantified the influence of exposed clay mineral surfaces on the transport of organic colloids in carbonate media. This renders PEG a suitable model colloid tracer for the assessment of clay surface exposition in porous media.

Are nano-colloids controlling rare earth elements mobility or is it the opposite? Insight from A4F-UV-QQQ-ICP-MS

Rare earth element (REE) mobility in the environment is expected to be controlled by colloids. Recent research has detailed the structure of iron-organic colloids (Fe-OM colloids), which include both large colloids and smaller nano-colloids. To assess how these nano-colloids affect REE mobility, their interactions with REE and calcium (Ca) were investigated at pH 4 and 6. Using Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation (A4F) combined with UV and Triple Quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (QQQ-ICP-MS), Fe-OM nano-colloids were separated from bulk Fe-OM colloids and their REE and Ca content were analyzed. Without REE and Ca, nano-colloids had an average diameter of approximately 25 nm. Their structure is pH-dependent, with aggregation increasing as pH decreases. At high REE loadings (REE/Fe ≥ 0.05), REE induced a size increase of nano-colloids, regardless of pH. Heavy REE (HREE), with their high affinity for organic matter, formed strong complexes with Fe-OM colloids, resulting in large aggregates. In contrast, light REE (LREE), which bind less strongly to organic molecules, were associated with the smallest nano-colloids. Low REE loading did not cause noticeable fractionation. Calcium further enhanced the aggregation process at both pH levels by neutralizing the charges on nano-colloids. These findings indicate that REE can act as aggregating agent controlling their own mobility, and regulating colloid transfer.

Changes in the Aggregation Behaviour of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Influenced by Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Salts, and Humic Acid in Simulated Waters

The increasing utilization of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in many consumer products is of concern due to their eventual release into the natural environment and induction of potentially adverse impacts. The behaviour and environmental impacts of ZnO-NPs could be altered through their interactions with environmentally coexisting substances. This study investigated the changes in the behaviour of ZnO-NPs in the presence of coexisting organic pollutants (such as perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA]), natural organic substances (i.e., humic acid [HA]), and electrolytes (i.e., NaCl and CaCl2) in simulated waters. The size, shape, purity, crystallinity, and surface charge of the ZnO-NPs in simulated water after different interaction intervals (such as 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks) at a controlled pH of 7 were examined using various characterization techniques. The results indicated alterations in the size (such as 162.4 nm, 1 day interaction to >10 µm, 3 weeks interaction) and zeta potential (such as -47.2 mV, 1 day interaction to -0.2 mV, 3 weeks interaction) of the ZnO-NPs alone and when PFOA, electrolytes, and HA were present in the suspension. Different influences on the size and surface charge of the nanoparticles were observed for fixed concentrations (5 mM) of the different electrolytes. The presence of HA-dispersed ZnO-NPs affected the zeta potential. Such dispersal effects were also observed in the presence of both PFOA and salts due to their large aliphatic carbon content and complex structure. Cation bridging effects, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces could be potential interaction forces responsible for the adsorption of PFOA. The presence of organic pollutants (PFOA) and natural organic substances (HA) can transform the surface characteristics and fate of ZnO-NPs in natural and sea waters.

Adsorption and distribution of heavy metals in aquatic environments: The role of colloids and effects of environmental factors

The study investigated the distributions of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Pb) between dissolved fraction (<0.7 µm) and particles (>0.7 µm) during the adsorption process. The dissolved fraction was further separated into truly dissolved (<3 kDa) and colloidal (3 kDa-0.7 µm) fractions. Significant metal adsorption occurred on the colloids, resulting in their aggregation into particles, which in turn influenced the particle adsorption kinetics. Colloids could either accelerate or inhibit the transformation of metal ions into particulates, depending on their stability. Competitive metals for colloids (Pb and Cr) were more susceptible to the effects of colloids than other elements. DOM was the predominant environmental factor influencing colloid behavior. The XDLVO theory showed that DOM enhanced the negative charge of colloids and made the colloid surface more hydrophilic, inhibiting the aggregation of colloids. DOM resulted in substantial increases in the concentrations of colloidal Pb and Cr from 0.31 μg/L and 4.58 μg/L to 20.52 μg/L and 43.51 μg/L, respectively, whereas the increment for less competitive metals (Cd and Mn) was smaller. These findings suggest that the distribution of heavy metals is influenced not only by adsorption from particles and ions but also by the complex dynamics of colloids.

Role of polyferric sulfate and ferric chloride on anaerobic fermentation of sludge from novel two-stage process for resource recovery

Polyferric sulfate (PFS) and ferric chloride (FC) were compared for their efficiencies in capturing organic carbon and phosphorus, and their effects on the anaerobic fermentation process of sludge from a pilot-scale two-stage reactor were studied. Both PFS and FC promoted organic carbon and phosphorus capture. Further study revealed that PFS-based sludge with a dosage of 18 mg Fe/Lsewage showed a better volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production performance (202.97 ± 2.38 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/g volatile solids (VS)) than that of FC-based sludge (169.25 ± 1.56 mg COD/g VS). Besides, the high dosage of PFS effectively promoted the activities of the α-glucosidase and proteases. The dissimilatory iron reduction process enhanced sludge flocs disintegration and the conversion of carbohydrates and proteins to VFAs. Non-hydroxyapatite phosphorus predominated in the total phosphorus of all samples. This study contributes to developing strategies for optimizing iron-based sludge management and high-value product recovery.

Influence of Iron and Magnesium on Fouling Properties of Organic Matter Solution in Membrane Process

Organic matter has been identified as a significant type of foulant in membrane processes for water treatment. Its fouling tendency is highly affected by the presence of ions and inorganics. While the effects of ions addition on organic fouling have been extensively researched in the past, studies on the effect of positively-charged inorganics, such as Fe2+ and Mg2+, on organic fouling are limited. This study investigates the influence of Fe2+ and Mg2+ addition on fouling properties of the Suwannee River Organic Matter (SROM) solution in the MF process, with and without Ca2+ ions. Results showed that increasing the concentration of Fe2+ and Mg2+ from 0-5 mM promoted SROM fouling, and resulted in an increased flux decline up to 33% and 58%, respectively. Cake layer resistance became more dominant with the addition of Fe2+ and Mg2+, and was counted for more than 60% of the fouling. Mg2+, however, caused higher internal pore blocking, and facilitated the formation of a less permeable cake layer, compared to Fe2+. This was evident in the analysis of the cake layer properties and the visualization of the fouling layer. In all cases, SROM fouling with Fe2+ and Mg2+ worsened with the addition of Ca2+ ions. The results of the study indicated the importance of understanding the interaction between organic matter and Fe2+ and Mg2+, which would provide useful insights on their fouling mechanism and control.

High-Performance Aluminum Fuels Induced by Monolayer Self-Assembly of Nano-Sized Energetic Fluoride Vesicles on the Surface

Surface modification is frequently used to solve the problems of low combustion properties and agglomeration for aluminum-based fuels. However, due to the intrinsic incompatibility between the aluminum powder and the organic modifiers, the surface coating is usually uneven and disordered, which significantly deteriorates the uniformity and performances of the Al-based fuels. Herein, a new approach of monolayer nano-vesicular self-assembly is proposed to prepare high-performance Al fuels. Triblock copolymer G-F-G is produced by glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and 2,2'-(2,2,3,3,4,5,5-Octafluorohexane-1,6-diyl) bis (oxirane) (fluoride) ring-open addition reaction. By utilizing G-F-G vesicular self-assembly in a special solvent, the nano-sized vesicles are firmly adhered to the surface of Al powder through the long-range attraction between the fluorine segments and Al. Meanwhile, the electrostatic repulsion between vesicles ensures an extremely thin coating thickness (≈15 nm), maintaining the monolayer coating structure. Nice ignition, combustion, anti-agglomeration, and water-proof properties of Al@G-F-G(DMF) are achieved, which are superior among the existing Al-based fuels. The derived Al-based fuel has excellent comprehensive properties, which can not only inspire the development of new-generation energetic materials but also provide facile but exquisite strategies for exquisite surface nanostructure construction via ordered self-assembly for many other applications.

Fractionation of biomass-burning smoke-derived dissolved organic matters on the surface of clay minerals: Variations of molecular properties and components

Biomass burning (e.g., wildfire) frequently occurs globally, inevitably produces abundant biomass-burning smoke-derived dissolved organic matters (BBS-DOMs) which eventually deposits on the surface environment. The adsorption and fractionation of BBS-DOMs on clays inevitably alter their biogeochemical process and environmental behaviors in the surface environment. It is therefore important to clarify the adsorption and fractionation of BBS-DOM on clay surfaces. This study found that the fractionation of BBS-DOMs on clays (montmorillonite and kaolinite) were controlled by their functional groups, aromaticity, molecular size and organic components. The spectral indexes (SUVA254 and S275-295) of BBS-DOMs in solution after clays adsorption suggested that with the increasing DOC concentration, the primary interaction between BBS-DOMs and clays changed from hydrogen bond to hydrophobic/pore filling effects, and the adsorption ratio of the large molecules increased, which were very different from natural fulvic acid. Furthermore, various BBS-DOMs and fulvic acid had different component fractionation behaviors during clay adsorption, because they had different abundances of protein-like matters (hydrogen bond donors), pyridine-N/pyrimidine-N (positive charge doners of electrostatic interaction), and fulvic-like matters (hydrophobic interaction and pore filling effect). Additionally, the increasing pH weakened the adsorption of bulk BBS-DOMs and enhanced the adsorption ratio of aromatic matters and smaller BBS-DOM molecules. Meanwhile, at a higher pH, the adsorption ratio of protein-like matters increased, while the adsorption ratio of humic- and fulvic-like matters decreased. The result was ascribed to the enhanced hydrogen bond between protein-like matters and clays as well as the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between humic-/fulvic-like matters and clays. This study is helpful for deeply understanding the multimedia-crossing environmental behavior of BBS-DOMs in the surface environment.

Impact of natural organic matter and inorganic ions on the stabilization of polystyrene micro-particles

The orthokinetic coagulation of irregularly shaped polystyrene micro-particles (PS-MP) was investigated in solutions of inorganic cations with different valence (NaCl, CaCl2, LaCl3) using a coagulation jar test set-up combined with light extinction particle counting. The stabilizing effect of model natural organic matter (NOM from reverse-osmosis (RO-NOM), humic (HA) & fulvic acid (FA)) and of surface water components (SW-NOM) was studied. Collision efficiencies were calculated from the decrease in particle concentration applying first order reaction kinetics. The coagulation of PS-MP followed Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory with regard to ionic charge in solution. Highest collision efficiencies were obtained close to the suspected critical coagulation concentrations for CaCl2 (12 mM) and LaCl3 (5.5 mM) whereas for NaCl no CCC was found within the applied concentration range (10-1000 mM). The addition of NOM effectively stabilized PS-MP at low ionic strength (10 mM NaCl) in the order HA > RO-NOM > FA > SW-NOM at concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as low as 0.2-0.5 mg/L DOC through electrostatic repulsion. PS-MP were effectively stabilized in 6.1 mg DOC/L of SW-NOM even at high ionic strength (100 mM MgCl2). Coagulation at intermediate ionic strength (10 mM MgCl2) was only observed for SW-NOM concentrations below 0.6 mg/L DOC. The results showed that even low NOM concentrations prevent PS-MP from orthokinetic coagulation in the presence of high ion concentrations. The study provides further insight in the orthokinetic coagulation behavior of PS-MP in the presence of NOM and highlights the importance of NOM for the stabilization of microplastics in aquatic suspensions. Further research is needed to elucidate the behavior of MP in turbulent systems to predict the mobility MP in aquatic systems such as rivers.

Effects of dissolved organic matter on the environmental behavior and toxicity of metal nanomaterials: A review

Metal nanomaterials (MNMs) have been released into the environment during their usage in various products, and their environmental behaviors directly impact their toxicity. Numerous environmental factors potentially affect the behaviors and toxicity of MNMs with dissolved organic matter (DOM) playing the most essential role. Abundant facts showing contradictory results about the effects of DOM on MNMs, herein the occurrence of DOM on the environmental process change of MNMs such as dissolution, dispersion, aggregation, and surface transformation were summarized. We also reviewed the effects of MNMs on organisms and their mechanisms in the environment such as acute toxicity, oxidative stress, oxidative damage, growth inhibition, photosynthesis, reproductive toxicity, and malformation. The presence of DOM had the potential to reduce or enhance the toxicity of MNMs by altering the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, dissolution, stability, and electrostatic repulsion of MNMs. Furthermore, we summarized the factors that affected different toxicity including specific organisms, DOM concentration, DOM types, light conditions, detection time, and production methods of MNMs. However, the more detailed mechanism of interaction between DOM and MNMs needs further investigation.

Microbial nanotechnology for agriculture, food, and environmental sustainability: Current status and future perspective

The field of nanotechnology has the mysterious capacity to reform every subject it touches. Nanotechnology advancements have already altered a variety of scientific and industrial fields. Nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm (nm) are of great scientific and commercial interest. Their functions and characteristics differ significantly from those of bulk metal. Commercial quantities of NPs are synthesized using chemical or physical methods. The use of the physical and chemical approaches remained popular for many years; however, the recognition of their hazardous effects on human well-being and conditions influenced serious world perspectives for the researchers. There is a growing need in this field for simple, non-toxic, clean, and environmentally safe nanoparticle production methods to reduce environmental impact and waste and increase energy productivity. Microbial nanotechnology is relatively a new field. Using various microorganisms, a wide range of nanoparticles with well-defined chemical composition, morphology, and size have been synthesized, and their applications in a wide range of cutting-edge technological areas have been investigated. Green synthesis of the nanoparticles is cost-efficient and requires low maintenance. The present review highlights the synthesis of the nanoparticles by different microbes, their characterization, and their biotechnological potential. It further deals with the applications in biomedical, food, and textile industries as well as its role in biosensing, waste recycling, and biofuel production.

Coprecipitation of Fe/Cr Hydroxides at Organic-Water Interfaces: Functional Group Richness and (De)protonation Control Amounts and Compositions of Coprecipitates

Iron/chromium hydroxide coprecipitation controls the fate and transport of toxic chromium (Cr) in many natural and engineered systems. Organic coatings on soil and engineered surfaces are ubiquitous; however, mechanistic controls of these organic coatings over Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation are poorly understood. Here, Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation was conducted on model organic coatings of humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The organics bonded with SiO2 through ligand exchange with carboxyl (-COOH), and the adsorbed amounts and pKa values of -COOH controlled surface charges of coatings. The adsorbed organic films also had different complexation capacities with Fe/Cr ions and Fe/Cr hydroxide particles, resulting in significant differences in both the amount (on HA > SA(-COOH) ≫ BSA(-NH2)) and composition (Cr/Fe molar ratio: on BSA(-NH2) ≫ HA > SA(-COOH)) of heterogeneous precipitates. Negatively charged -COOH attracted more Fe ions and oligomers of hydrolyzed Fe/Cr species and subsequently promoted heterogeneous precipitation of Fe/Cr hydroxide nanoparticles. Organic coatings containing -NH2 were positively charged at acidic pH because of the high pKa value of the functional group, limiting cation adsorption and formation of coprecipitates. Meanwhile, the higher local pH near the -NH2 coatings promoted the formation of Cr(OH)3. This study advances fundamental understanding of heterogeneous Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation on organics, which is essential for successful Cr remediation and removal in both natural and engineered settings, as well as the synthesis of Cr-doped iron (oxy)hydroxides for material applications.

Assessment of Ingested Micro- and Nanoplastic (MNP)-Mediated Genotoxicity in an In Vitro Model of the Small Intestinal Epithelium (SIE)

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have become ubiquitous contaminants of water and foods, resulting in high levels of human ingestion exposure. MNPs have been found in human blood and multiple tissues, suggesting that they are readily absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and widely distributed. Growing toxicological evidence suggests that ingested MNPs may pose a serious health threat. The potential genotoxicity of MNPs, however, remains largely unknown. In this study, genotoxicity of primary and environmentally relevant secondary MNPs was assessed in a triculture small intestinal epithelium (SIE) model using the CometChip assay. Aqueous suspensions of 25 and 1000 nm carboxylated polystyrene spheres (PS25C and PS1KC), and incinerated polyethylene (PEI PM0.1) were subjected to simulated GIT digestion to create physiologically relevant exposures (digestas), which were applied to the SIE model at final MNP concentrations of 1, 5, and 20 μg/mL for 24 or 48 h. PS25C and PS1KC induced DNA damage in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. To our knowledge, this is one of the first assessment of MNP genotoxicity in an integrated in vitro ingestion platform including simulated GIT digestion and a triculture SIE model. These findings suggest that ingestion of high concentrations of carboxylated PS MNPs could have serious genotoxic consequences in the SIE.

Unveiling the effect of different dissolved organic matter (DOM) on catalytic dechlorination of nFe/Ni particles: Corrosion and passivation effect

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is ubiquitously distributed in groundwater, has a crucial role in the fate and reactivity of iron materials. However, there is a lack of direct evidence on how different DOMs interact with nFe/Ni in promoting or inhibiting the dechlorination efficiency of chlorinated aromatic contaminants. By comparing humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), and biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) at different pyrolysis temperatures, we first demonstrated that the dechlorination effect of nFe/Ni on 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) depended on the nature of DOMs and their adsorption on nFe/Ni. HA showed an enhancing effect on the dechlorination of 2,4-DCP by nFe/Ni, while the inhibition effect of other DOMs resulted in the following dechlorination order: BDOM300 ≈FA>BDOM700 ≈BDOM500. The C2 component with higher aromaticity and molecular weight promoted the corrosion of nFe/Ni and the production of reactive hydrogen atoms (H*). The effects of different DOMs on nFe/Ni include that (1) HA accelerates the corrosion and H* production of nFe/Ni, (2) FA and BDOM300 enhance the corrosion but inhibit H* production, and (3) Both nFe/Ni corrosion and H* formation are suppressed by BDOM500/BDOM700. Therefore, this study will provide a reference for understanding the nature of DOM-nFe/Ni interaction and improving the catalytic activity of nFe/Ni when different DOMs coexist in practical applications.

Dissolved organic matter accelerates microbial degradation of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol in the presence of iron mineral

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron minerals widely existing in the natural aquatic environment can mediate the migration and transformation of organic pollutants. However, the mechanism of interaction between DOM and iron minerals in the microbial degradation of pollutants deserves further investigation. In this study, the mechanism of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation mediated by humic acid (HA) and three kinds of iron minerals (goethite, magnetite, and pyrite) was investigated. The results found that HA and iron minerals significantly accelerated the biodegradation process of EE2, and the highest degradation efficiency of EE2 (48%) was observed in the HA-mediated microbial system with pyrite under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, it had been demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (HO•) was the main active substance responsible for the microbial degradation of EE2. HO• is primarily generated through the reaction between hydrogen peroxide secreted by microorganisms and Fe(II), with aerobic conditions being more conducive. The presence of iron minerals and HA could change the microbial communities in the EE2 biodegradation system. These findings provide new information for exploring the migration and transformation of pollutants by microorganisms in iron-rich environments.

eDNA Adsorption onto Microplastics: Impacts of Water Chemistry and Polymer Physiochemical Properties

Adsorption of biomacromolecules onto polymer surfaces, including microplastics (MPs), occurs in multiple environmental compartments, forming an ecocorona. Environmental DNA (eDNA), genetic material shed from organisms, can adsorb onto MPs which can potentially either (1) promote long-range transport of antibiotic resistant genes or (2) serve to gain insights into the transport pathways and origins of MPs by analyzing DNA sequences on MPs. However, little is known about the capacity of MPs to adsorb eDNA or the factors that influence sorption, such as polymer and water chemistries. Here we investigated the adsorption of extracellular linear DNA onto a variety of model MP fragments composed of three of the most environmentally prevalent polymers (polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene) in their pristine and photochemically weathered states. Batch adsorption experiments in a variety of water chemistries were complemented with nonlinear modeling to quantify the rate and extent of eDNA sorption. Ionic strength was shown to strongly impact DNA adsorption by reducing or inhibiting electrostatic repulsion. Polyethylene terephthalate exhibited the highest adsorption capacity when normalizing for MP specific surface area, likely due to the presence of ester groups. Kinetics experiments showed fast adsorption (majority adsorbed under 30 min) before eventually reaching equilibrium after 1-2 h. Overall, we demonstrated that DNA quickly binds to MPs, with pseudo-first- and -second-order models describing adsorption kinetics and the Freundlich model describing adsorption isotherms most accurately. These insights into DNA sorption onto MPs show that there is potential for MPs to act as vectors for genetic material of interest, especially considering that particle-bound DNA typically persists longer in the environment than dissolved DNA.

Effects of Cu(II)-DOM complexation on DOM degradation: Insights from spectroscopic evidence

The fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is primarily governed by its sources, degradation, and transformation processes within the environment. However, the influence of metal-DOM complexation on DOM degradation remains ambiguous. In this study, controlled laboratory experiments were conducted using Cu(II) and natural water from the Duliujian River and the Beidagang Wetland to examine the effects of metal-DOM binding on the degradation pathway of DOM. Our results showed that Cu(II)-DOM complexation affected the distribution of DOM molecular weight with elevated Mw after complexed with Cu(II). Nevertheless, the concentration of DOM decreased over the incubation period due to degradation. In the absence of Cu(II) binding, both wetland and river DOM followed similar degradation pathways, transforming from high to low molecular weight with changes predominantly in the 1-10 kDa size-fraction during DOM degradation. In contrast, in the presence of Cu(II) and thus Cu(II)-DOM binding, the degradation of DOM was enhanced, resulting in higher kinetic rate constants for both wetland and river DOM. The results of differential spectra further confirmed the degradation of DOM with a decrease in bulk spectroscopic properties and an increase in the degree of DOM-Cu(II) complexation. These findings imply a mutually reinforcing relationship between metal-DOM complexation and the degradation of DOM in aquatic environments, providing new insights into the biogeochemical behavior and environmental fate of DOM.

Properties of biochar colloids and behaviors in the soil environment: Influencing the migration of heavy metals

Biochar pyrolyzed by biomass shows excellent application prospects for heavy metal (HM) remediation, but a part of biochar can be inevitably broken into micro- and nano-sized biochar colloids (BCs) under biological and physicochemical actions in soil. BCs derived in the process of remediation have rough surface, rich elemental species and contents, and multiple functional groups, which are similar to biochar. However, BCs have some unique colloidal properties because of their micro and nano scale size. Due to these properties, BCs exhibit strong mobilities in the soil environment, and the mobilities may be influenced by a combination of colloidal properties of BCs and environmental factors including soil colloids and other soil environmental conditions. In addition, BCs may have affinity effects on HMs through electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation, precipitation/co-precipitation, and redox because of the properties such as large specific surface area, and rich oxygen-containing functional groups and minerals on the surface. This review summarizes the physicochemical and migratory properties of BCs, and the internal and external factors affecting the migration of BCs in the soil environment, and the possible effects of BCs on HMs are high-lighted. This review provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of soil contaminated with HMs after remediation using biochar. Notably, the innovative idea that BCs may influence the presence of HMs in soil needs to be further confirmed by more targeted detection and analysis methods in future studies to prevent the possible environmental toxicities of the lateral and vertical diffusion of HM caused by BCs in soil.

Unveiling the effects of protein corona formation on the aggregation kinetics of gold nanoparticles in monovalent and divalent electrolytes

Elucidation of the aggregation behaviors of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in water systems is crucial to understanding their environmental fate and transport as well as human health effects. We investigated the early-stage aggregation kinetics of AuNPs coated by human serum albumin (HSA) protein corona (PC) in NaCl and CaCl2 through time-resolved dynamic light scattering. We found that the aggregation of PC-AuNPs depended on the concerted effects of electrolyte concentration, valence, and HSA concentration. At low HSA concentration (≤0.005 g/L), the aggregation kinetics of PC-AuNPs was similar to that of bare AuNPs due to insignificant HSA adsorption. At intermediate HSA concentrations of 0.025-0.050 g/L, the aggregation of PC-AuNPs was retarded in both electrolytes due to steric repulsive forces imparted by the PCs. Additionally, HSA PCs had a weaker retardation effect on PC-AuNPs aggregation in divalent than in monovalent electrolytes. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements revealed that the presence of Ca2+ promoted additional HSA adsorption on PC-AuNPs likely via -COO-Ca2+ bond, and eventually enhanced the aggregation between PC-AuNPs. High-concentration HSA (>0.5 g/L) resulted in no PC-AuNPs aggregation regardless of electrolyte valence and concentrations. Finally, desorption of HSA barely occurred after adsorption on the gold surface, suggesting that the formation of PC-AuNPs is mostly irreversible.

Influences of dissolved organic matters on the adsorption and bioavailability of sulfadiazine: Molecular weight- and type-dependent heterogeneities

The bioavailability of contaminants in aquatic environments was highly related with the existing forms (soluble or adsorbed) and properties of dissolved organic matters (DOMs). In this study, the molecular weight (MWs)-dependent effects of DOMs on the adsorption and bioavailability of sulfadiazine were explored. Colloid ZnO and Al2O3 were employed as the representative colloidal particles, and algae-derived organic matter (AOM) and humic acid (HA) were selected as typical autochthonous and allochthonous DOMs. The ultrafiltration procedure was applied to divide the bulk DOMs into high MW (HMW-, 1 kDã0.45 μm) and low MW (LMW-, <1 kDa) fractions. Results showed that HMW-DOM contained more aromatic and protein-like substances as compared to the LMW counterparts. In addition, presence of AOM promoted sulfadiazine adsorption capabilities by 1.19-4.54 folds and mitigated the inhibition ratio by 0.56-0.78 folds, whereas those of HA inhibited sulfadiazine adsorption by 0.27-0.84 folds and enhanced the biotoxicity by 1.21-1.45 folds. Regardless of different DOM types, HMW-fraction exhibited highest effects on sulfadiazine adsorption and bioavailability, followed by the bulk- and LMW-fractions. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy showed that sulfadiazine was adsorbed on colloidal surfaces prior to AOM, and the subsequent adsorption of AOM can provide additional sites for sulfadiazine adsorption, which decreased the concentrations of aqueous sulfadiazine as well as the biotoxicity to Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa). The HA, however, was preferentially adsorbed on colloidal surfaces, which hindered the subsequent sulfadiazine adsorption and resulted in a high sulfadiazine abundance in aqueous solution as well as the enhanced biotoxicity to M. aeruginosa. This study highlighted the importance of the types and MWs of DOMs in influencing the behaviors and ecological effects of aquatic contaminants.

One-step synthesis of phytic acid-assisted hydrochar boost selective sorption and in situ passivation of lanthanum

The rare earth metal element lanthanum (La) possesses carcinogenic, genotoxic, and accumulative properties, necessitating urgent development of an efficient and cost-effective method to remove La. However, current sorbents still encounter challenges such as poor selectivity, low sorption capacity, and high production costs. This study therefore proposes a promising solution: the creation of phytic acid-assisted sludge hydrochars (P-SHCs) to eliminate La from water and soil environments. This method harnesses phytic acid's exceptional binding ability and the economical hydrothermal carbonization process. P-SHCs exhibit robust sorption affinity, fast sorption kinetics, and excellent sorption selectivity for La when compared with pristine hydrochars (SHCs). This advantage arises from the remarkable binding ability of phosphate functional groups (polyphosphates) on P-SHCs, forming P-O-La complexes. Moreover, P-SHCs demonstrate sustained sorption efficiency across at least five cycles, with a slight decrease attributed to the loss of phosphorus species and mass during recycling. Furthermore, P-SHCs demonstrated superior economic feasibility, with a higher estimated cost-benefit ratio than that of other sorbents. Our study further validates the exceptional passivation capability of P-SHCs, showcasing relative stabilization efficiency ranging from 37.6 % to 79.6 % for La contamination. Additionally, acting as soil passivation agents, P-SHCs foster the enrichment of specific soil microorganisms such as Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, capable of solubilizing phosphorus and resisting heavy metals. These findings present novel ideas and technical support for employing P-SHCs in combatting environmental pollution stemming from rare earth metals.

Azolla Pinnata: Sustainable Floating Oil Cleaner of Water Bodies

Various plant-based materials effectively absorb oil contaminants at the water/air interface. These materials showcase unparalleled efficiency in purging oil contaminants, encompassing rivers, lakes, and boundless oceans, positioning them as integral components of environmental restoration endeavors. In addition, they are biodegradable, readily available, and eco-friendly, thus making them a preferable choice over traditional oil cleaning materials. This study explores the phenomenal properties of the floating Azolla fern (Azolla pinnata), focusing on its unique hierarchical leaf surface design at both the microscale and nanoscale levels. These intricate structures endow the fern with exceptional characteristics, including superhydrophobicity, high water adhesion, and remarkable oil or organic solvent absorption capabilities. Azolla's leaf surface exhibits a rare combination of dual wettability, where hydrophilic spots on a superhydrophobic base enable the pinning of water droplets, even when positioned upside-down. This extraordinary property, known as the parahydrophobic state, is rare in floating plants, akin to the renowned Salvinia molesta, setting Azolla apart as a natural wonder. Submerged in water, Azolla leaves excel at absorbing light oils at the air-water interface, demonstrating a notable ability to extract high-density organic solvents. Moreover, Azolla's rapid growth, doubling in the area every 4-5 days, especially in flowing waters, positions it as a sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic oil-cleaning materials with long-term environmental repercussions. This scientific lead could pave the way for more environmentally friendly approaches to mitigate the negative impacts of oil spills and promote a cleaner water ecosystem.

Differential influences of forest floor-pyrolyzed biochar-derived and leached dissolved organic matter interaction with natural iron-bearing minerals in forest subsoil on the formation of mineral-associated soil organic matter

The vertical sequestration of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by iron minerals along the soil profile is assumed to be central to the long-term storage of the soil organic matter (SOM) pool. However, there is limited information available about how the interaction between DOM and natural iron-bearing minerals shape mineral SOM associations quantitatively and qualitatively in forest subsoils. Here, we systematically investigated the influences of forest organic layer-pyrolyzed biochar-derived DOM (BDOM) and leached DOM (LDOM) on quantity, molecular composition, and diversity of deposition layer-derived iron minerals-associated OM by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and other complementary spectroscopy. Results indicated natural iron minerals (FeOx1 and FeOx2) had a greater capacity for sorbing LDOM with higher aromaticity and molecular weight than those of BDOM, and the higher proportion of goethite and short-order-range phase in natural iron minerals was closely related to the increased OM adsorption capacity. We also observed the preferential sorption of oxygen/nitrogen-rich polycyclic aromatic compounds and carboxylic-containing compounds in LDOM and concurrent the potential release of lignin-like/aromatics compounds and carboxyl/nitrogen-less aliphatic compounds from native OM coprecipitates into the solution. However, unsaturated and oxidized phenolic compounds in BDOM had a stronger affinity for FeOx through hydrophobic partitioning and specific polar interactions, and concomitantly the partial release of nitrogen-free aliphatic and other carboxyl-rich compounds. More nitrogen structures in aromatic-containing compounds can improve the saturation level and polarity of BDOM. Compared with BDOM, LDOM exerted a stronger control over the exchange of native OM from subsoil natural iron-bearing minerals and substantially enhanced the molecular diversity of the reconstituted mineral-associated OM during the adsorptive fractionation. Overall, these findings suggest the compositional evolution of DOM profoundly shapes SOM formation and persistence in forest subsoils, which is the key to understanding DOM cycling and contaminant fate during its passage through the soil.

Facet-dependent dispersion and aggregation of aqueous hematite nanoparticles

Nanoparticle aggregates in solution controls surface reactivity and function. Complete dispersion often requires additive sorbents to impart a net repulsive interaction between particles. Facet engineering of nanocrystals offers an alternative approach to produce monodisperse suspensions simply based on facet-specific interaction with solvent molecules. Here, we measure the dispersion/aggregation of three morphologies of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles in varied aqueous solutions using ex situ electron microscopy and in situ small-angle x-ray scattering. We demonstrate a unique tendency of (104) hematite nanoparticles to maintain a monodisperse state across a wide range of solution conditions not observed with (001)- and (116)-dominated particles. Density functional theory calculations reveal an inert, densely hydrogen-bonded first water layer on the (104) facet that favors interparticle dispersion. Results validate the notion that nanoparticle dispersions can be controlled through morphology for specific solvents, which may help in the development of various nanoparticle applications that rely on their interfacial area to be highly accessible in stable suspensions.

Novel multiplexed alkali enzyme lysis coupled with EDTA pretreatment for RNA virus extraction from wastewater sludge: Optimization, recovery, and detection

RNA viruses are readily enriched in wastewater sludge owing to adsorption by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during wastewater treatment, causing pathogenicity. However, conventional wastewater extraction methods often fail to fully extract these viruses from sludge. In this study, three methods: enzymatic (ENP), alkaline (ALP), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) pretreatments were applied to sludges and promote the RNA virus extraction from sludge. Our results show that the total recovery rate of RNA viruses increased by 87.73% after ENP pretreatment, whereas ALP pretreatment inhibited virus extraction. The highest recovery rate of viruses from sludge, reaching 296.80%, was achieved with EDTA pretreatment (EDP) coupled with ENP. Notably, the most significant increase was observed in the abundance of Astroviruses, which increased from 7.60 × 107 to 7.86 × 108 copies/g TSS after EDP + ENP treatment. Our investigations revealed that virus extraction was affected by a class of short-wavelength protein substances, as opposed to tryptophan or tyrosine, which were eluted by proteins with beef paste buffer by substitution after EDP + ENP treatment. The results of this study provide essential insights for sludge-based epidemiology with the required sensitivity for managing the extraction of RNA epidemic viruses to control viral transmission.

Controls of Mineral Solubility on Adsorption-Induced Molecular Fractionation of Dissolved Organic Matter Revealed by 21 T FT-ICR MS

Mineral adsorption-induced molecular fractionation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) affects the composition of both DOM and OM adsorbed and thus stabilized by minerals. However, it remains unclear what mineral properties control the magnitude of DOM fractionation. Using a combined technique approach that leverages the molecular composition identified by ultrahigh resolution 21 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and adsorption isotherms, we catalogue the compositional differences that occur at the molecular level that results in fractionation due to adsorption of Suwannee River fulvic acid on aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) oxides and a phyllosilicate (allophane) species of contrasting properties. The minerals of high solubility (i.e., amorphous Al oxide, boehmite, and allophane) exhibited much stronger DOM fractionation capabilities than the minerals of low solubility (i.e., gibbsite and Fe oxides). Specifically, the former released Al3+ to solution (0.05-0.35 mM) that formed complexes with OM and likely reduced the surface hydrophobicity of the mineral-OM assemblage, thus increasing the preference for adsorbing polar DOM molecules. The impacts of mineral solubility are exacerbated by the fact that interactions with DOM also enhance metal release from minerals. For sparsely soluble minerals, the mineral surface hydrophobicity, instead of solubility, appeared to be the primary control of their DOM fractionation power. Other chemical properties seemed less directly relevant than surface hydrophobicity and solubility in fractionating DOM.

Binding capacity and co-migration potential of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) on colloids in road runoff

To evaluate the co-migration potential between heavy metal ions and road runoff colloids, the influence of contact time, temperature, initial concentration of metal ions, pH, humic acid (HA), and polymetallic coexistence on the binding capacity of heavy metals onto runoff colloids were investigated. The adsorption of heavy metals by runoff colloids was extremely rapid, approximately 80% of the equilibrium adsorption capacity was achieved in the first 30 min. The binding capacity exhibited an increasing trend with the initial concentration of metal ions increasing, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) achieved 159.13, 56.06, and 78.35 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by runoff colloids increased with temperature increasing, while it displayed a converse trend for Pb(II). Neutral pH facilitated the combination of metal ions and runoff colloids. The presence of humic acid increased the binding capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) onto runoff colloids by 72.19, 63.31, and 13.83mg/g, respectively. Compared to the monometallic systems, the binding capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) by runoff colloids decreased by 18.44%, 22.35%, and 56.06% in polymetallic systems, respectively. Pb(II) bounded with colloids in the road runoff should be controlled preferentially to avoid their migrations to aquatic environments.

Temporal changes of exposure to water on physic-chemical, stability, and transport characteristics of pyrogenic carbon colloids

Understanding the effect of the aging process on the properties of pyrogenic carbon (PyC) is critical for predicting and evaluating its transport and fate. Water exposure is a common application scenario of PyC entering aquatic systems or flooded paddy fields, which might significantly affect the aging process. However, only some studies focused on the changes in PyC properties by water exposure treatment. In this study, the effect of water exposure on the mobility of PyC was investigated. Fresh PyC, PyC with 1.5 years and 3.5 years of water exposure were selected and named as CK, 1.5WA, and 3.5WA, respectively. Our results revealed that CK had the lowest intensity of surface functional groups (-OH, CO, and C-O-C) and the intensity of 3.5WA was higher than that of 1.5WA. There was no significant change in dissolved organic matter (DOM) content between fresh and aged PyC colloids. However, UV absorbance and its parameters (E2/E3, E4/E6, and SR) exhibited a comparable tendency to the abundance of functional groups (-OH, CO, and C-O-C). The fresh and aged PyC colloids showed high stability in Na+ and Ca2+ solutions at varying pH values (A/A0 > 85%), which was also observed in groundwater. The mobility of fresh and aged PyC colloids differed in Na+ (21.74%-57.19%), Ca2+ (14.30%-40.12%) solutions and groundwater (28.50%-44.24%), but exhibited similar order (3.5WA > 1.5WA > CK). The mechanism of the effect of water exposure on the property and mobility of PyC colloids was explored. This study provides the fundamental information to estimate PyC fate and transport after long-term water exposure.

Earthworm Coelomocyte Internalization of MoS2 Nanosheets: Multiplexed Imaging, Molecular Profiling, and Computational Modeling

Fully understanding the cellular uptake and intracellular localization of MoS2 nanosheets (NSMoS2) is a prerequisite for their safe applications. Here, we characterized the uptake profile of NSMoS2 by functional coelomocytes of the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Considering that vacancy engineering is widely applied to enhance the NSMoS2 performance, we assessed the potential role of such atomic vacancies in regulating cellular uptake processes. Coelomocyte internalization and lysosomal accumulation of NSMoS2 were tracked by fluorescent labeling imaging. Cellular uptake inhibitors, proteomics, and transcriptomics helped to mechanistically distinguish vacancy-mediated endocytosis pathways. Specifically, Mo ions activated transmembrane transporter and ion-binding pathways, entering the coelomocyte through assisted diffusion. Unlike molybdate, pristine NSMoS2 (P-NSMoS2) induced protein polymerization and upregulated gene expression related to actin filament binding, which phenotypically initiated actin-mediated endocytosis. Conversely, vacancy-rich NSMoS2 (V-NSMoS2) were internalized by coelomocytes through a vesicle-mediated and energy-dependent pathway. Mechanistically, atomic vacancies inhibited mitochondrial transport gene expression and likely induced membrane stress, significantly enhancing endocytosis (20.3%, p < 0.001). Molecular dynamics modeling revealed structural and conformational damage of cytoskeletal protein caused by P-NSMoS2, as well as the rapid response of transport protein to V-NSMoS2. These findings demonstrate that earthworm functional coelomocytes can accumulate NSMoS2 and directly mediate cytotoxicity and that atomic vacancies can alter the endocytic pathway and enhance cellular uptake by reprogramming protein response and gene expression patterns. This study provides an important mechanistic understanding of the ecological risks of NSMoS2.

Deposition behaviors of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoplastics with goethite in aquatic environment: Effects of solution chemistry and organic macromolecules

The ubiquitous nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment are emerging contaminants due to their risks to human health and ecosystems. The interaction between NPs and minerals determines the environmental and ecological risks of NPs. In this study, the deposition behaviors of carboxyl modified polystyrene nanoplastics (COOH-PSNPs) with goethite (α-FeOOH) were systematically investigated under various solution chemistry and organic macromolecules (OMs) conditions (i.e., pH, ionic type, humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA)). The study found that electrostatic interactions dominated the interaction between COOH-PSNPs and goethite. The deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs decreased with an increase in solution pH, due to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion by higher pH. Introducing cations or anions could compress the electrostatic double layers and compete for interaction sites on COOH-PSNPs and goethite, thereby reducing the deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs. The stabilization effects, which were positive with ions valence, followed the orders of NaCl ≈ KCl < CaCl2, NaNO3 ≈ NaCl < Na2SO4 < Na3PO4. Specific adsorption of SO42- or H2PO4- caused a potential reversal of goethite from positive to negative, leading to the electrostatic forces between COOH-PSNPs and goethite changed from attraction to repulsion, and thus significantly decreasing deposition of COOH-PSNPs. Organic macromolecules could markedly inhibit the deposition of COOH-PSNPs with goethite because of enhanced electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, and competition of surface binding sites. The ability for inhibiting the deposition of COOH-PSNPs followed the sequence of SA > HA > BSA, which was related to their structure (SA: linear, semi-flexible, HA: globular, semi-rigid, BSA: globular, with protein tertiary structure) and surface charge density (SA > HA > BSA). The results of this study highlight the complexity of the interactions between NPs and minerals under different environments and provide valuable insights in understanding transport mechanisms and environmental fate of nanoplastics in aquatic environments.

Environmental effects and interaction of nanoparticles on beneficial soil and aquatic microorganisms

A steadily increasing production volume of nanoparticles reflects their numerous industrial and domestic applications. These economic successes come with the potential adverse effects on natural systems that are associated with their presence in the environment. Biological activities and effects of nanoparticles are affected by their entry method together with their specificities like their size, shape, charge, area, and chemical composition. Particles can be classified as safe or dangerous depending on their specific properties. As both aquatic and terrestrial systems suffer from organic and inorganic contamination, nanoparticles remain a sink for these contaminants. Researching the sources, synthesis, fate, and toxicity of nanoparticles has advanced significantly during the last ten years. We summarise nanoparticle pathways throughout the ecosystem and their interactions with beneficial microorganisms in this research. The prevalence of nanoparticles in the ecosystem causes beneficial microorganisms to become hazardous to their cells, which prevents the synthesis of bioactive molecules from undergoing molecular modifications and diminishes the microbe population. Recently, observed concentrations in the field could support predictions of ambient concentrations based on modeling methodologies. The aim is to illustrate the beneficial and negative effects that nanoparticles have on aqueous and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the methods utilized to reduce their toxicity.

Does anoxia promote the mobilization of P-bearing colloids from dam reservoir sediment?

In the context of a reservoir, the anoxia that develops in the bottom sediment induces the release of phosphorus (P) into the overlying water, thus supporting eutrophication. Most studies focusing on P dynamic in an aquatic environment fail to consider the "truly" dissolved and colloidal fractions, hence the colloidal P has gone largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate the release of sedimentary P under oscillating aerobic, anoxic and aerobic conditions, in taking into account the colloidal (10 kDa-1 µm) and truly dissolved (< 10 kDa) fractions. Laboratory incubations of wet sediment originating from a dam reservoir were performed over 63 days, consisting of 25 days of aerobic conditioning (lasting 2 periods) and 38 days of anoxia. Results showed that oxic conditions induced a very limited release of phosphorus, both in truly dissolved and colloidal forms. In turn, the development of anoxic conditions caused a large release of P, mainly in the colloidal fraction, representing about 90 % of the total water-mobilizable P (PWM < 1 µm). The initial release of truly dissolved P during the anoxic stage gradually diminished over time, possibly due to the formation of secondary minerals or re-adsorption processes. Approximately half of the PWM released during anoxia persisted under subsequent oxic conditions and consisted solely of colloidal P. The dynamics of PWM were primarily influenced by two main factors: (i) the reductive dissolution of iron, which released both dissolved and colloidal P, and (ii) the release of indigenous organic matter, which impacted the stability of the released colloids through bridging mechanisms.

Eco-Corona Formation on Plastics: Adsorption of Dissolved Organic Matter to Pristine and Photochemically Weathered Polymer Surfaces

Plastic fate in freshwater systems is dependent on particle size, morphology, and physicochemical surface properties (e.g., charge, surface roughness, and hydrophobicity). Environmental aging processes, such as photochemical weathering and eco-corona formation due to dissolved organic matter (DOM) adsorption on plastic surfaces, can alter their physicochemical properties, affecting fate and transport. While plastic aging has been studied from a materials science perspective, its specific implications in environmental contexts remain less understood. Although photochemical weathering and eco-corona formation occur simultaneously in the environment, in this work, we systematically assessed the effects of photochemical weathering on the physicochemical properties of polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene) and how this influences the adsorption of DOMs (Suwannee River humic acid, fulvic acid, and natural organic matter) relative to pristine polymers. Pristine polymers initially had different and distinct physicochemical surface properties, but upon aging, they became more similar in terms of surface properties. Photochemical weathering resulted in a decrease in polymer film thickness, an increase in surface roughness, and hydrophilicity. DOM adlayers on the polymer surfaces resulted in more comparable wettability, effectively masking the initial polymer properties. Collectively, this study explores the physiochemical changes polymers undergo in laboratory studies mimicking environmental conditions. Understanding these changes is the initial step to rationalizing and predicting processes and interactions such as heteroaggregation that dictate the fate of plastics in the environment.

Identification and Prioritization of Environmental Organic Pollutants: From an Analytical and Toxicological Perspective

Exposure to environmental organic pollutants has triggered significant ecological impacts and adverse health outcomes, which have been received substantial and increasing attention. The contribution of unidentified chemical components is considered as the most significant knowledge gap in understanding the combined effects of pollutant mixtures. To address this issue, remarkable analytical breakthroughs have recently been made. In this review, the basic principles on recognition of environmental organic pollutants are overviewed. Complementary analytical methodologies (i.e., quantitative structure-activity relationship prediction, mass spectrometric nontarget screening, and effect-directed analysis) and experimental platforms are briefly described. The stages of technique development and/or essential parts of the analytical workflow for each of the methodologies are then reviewed. Finally, plausible technique paths and applications of the future nontarget screening methods, interdisciplinary techniques for achieving toxicant identification, and burgeoning strategies on risk assessment of chemical cocktails are discussed.

Multiple spectroscopic insights into the interaction mechanisms between proteins and humic acid

Proteins are important constituents of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aqueous environments, and their interaction with humic acid (HA), another key component of DOM, substantially affects the environmental behaviors of DOM. In this work, the interaction mechanisms between tryptophan-containing proteins and HA were systematically investigated using multiple molecular spectroscopic approaches. The fluorescence quenching tests indicate that bovine serum albumin (BSA) was more readily quenched by HA and the coexisting phenolic, carboxyl, and quinone groups in HA contributed to this process significantly. By comparison, the fluorescence of L-tryptophan (L-Trp) was more stable under the same conditions. Furthermore, with multiple groups in HA, static quenching with the binding constants and the number of sites were calculated in the protein-HA and L-Trp-HA mixtures. In addition, the differential fluorescence spectra, UV‒Vis spectra, and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy results confirmed that L-tryptophan amino acid could indeed form a complex with HA, while did not lead to fluorescence quenching. Finally, the molecular docking and density functional theory (DFT) simulations highlighted the contribution of multiple residues surrounding the HA groups to their interactions. The direct interaction between the tryptophan residue and HA might not be the prerequisite for the fluorescence response. Therefore, our work provides further insights into protein-HA interactions and implies other reasonable elucidations for further explanation.

Dissolution Potential of Elemental Mercury in the Presence of Bisulfide and Implications for Mobilization

Liquid elemental mercury (Hg0L) pollution can remain in soils for decades and, over time, will undergo corrosion, a process in which the droplet surface oxidizes soil constituents to form more reactive phases, such as mercury oxide (HgO). While these reactive coatings may enhance Hg migration in the subsurface, little is known about the transformation potential of corroded Hg0L in the presence of reduced inorganic sulfur species to form sparingly soluble HgS particles, a process that enables the long-term sequestration of mercury in soils and generally reduces its mobility and bioavailability. In this study, we investigated the dissolution of corroded Hg0L in the presence of sulfide by quantifying rates of aqueous Hg release from corroded Hg0L droplets under different sulfide concentrations (expressed as the S:Hg molar ratio). For droplets corroded in ambient air, no differences in soluble Hg release were observed among all sulfide exposure levels (S:Hg mole ratios ranging from 10-4 to 10). However, for droplets oxidized in the presence of a more reactive oxidant (hydrogen peroxide, H2O2), we observed a 10- to 25-fold increase in dissolved Hg when the oxidized droplets were exposed to low sulfide concentrations (S:Hg ratios from 10-4 to 10-1) relative to droplets exposed to high sulfide concentrations. These results suggest two critical factors that dictate the release of soluble Hg from Hg0L in the presence of sulfide: the extent of surface corrosion of the Hg0L droplet and sufficient sulfide concentration for the formation of HgS solids. The mobilization of Hg0L in porous media, therefore, largely depends on aging conditions in the subsurface and chemical reactivity at the Hg0L droplet interface.

Meta-analysis of engineered nanoparticles dynamic aggregation in freshwater-like systems using machine learning techniques

Predictive algorithms for exposure characterization of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in the ecosystems are essential to improve the development of robust nano-safety frameworks. Here, machine learning (ML) techniques were utilised for data mining and prediction of the dynamic aggregation transformation process in aqueous environments using case studies of nZnO and nTiO₂. Supervised ML models using input variables of natural organic matter, ionic strength, size, and ENPs concentration showed poor prediction performance based on statistical metric values of root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R²), and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) for both types of ENP. On the contrary, algorithms developed using model input parameters of zeta potential, pH, and time had good generalisation and high prediction accuracy. Among the five developed ML algorithms, random forest regression, support vector regression, and artificial neural network generated good prediction accuracy for both data sets. Therefore, the use of ML can be valuable in the development of robust nano-safety frameworks to optimise societal benefits, and for proactive long-term ecological protection.

Molecular size-dependent compositions and lead (II) binding behaviors of two origins of organic fertilizers-derived dissolved organic matter

The application of organic fertilizers caused large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) entering the soil environment and influencing the behaviors and fates of heavy metals. Here, we investigated the molecular weight-dependent (high molecular weight [HMW], 1 kDa-0.7 µm; low molecular weight [LMW], <1 kDa) compositions and lead (Pb) binding behaviors of DOM derived from sheep manure-based (SMOF) and shrimp peptide-based organic fertilizers (SPOF) using chromophoric and fluorescent spectroscopy, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS). Results showed that SMOF released more DOM with higher aromaticity and hydrophobicity, containing more fluvic-like components, carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs) and lignin phenolic compounds compared to SPOF-DOM with more microbially-transformed heteroatom-containing compounds (CHON, CHONS and CHOS). Furthermore, there was more aromatic compounds with ample carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in HMW-DOM but abundant protein-like components and heteroatom-containing compounds (CHONS and CHOS) in LMW-DOM. SMOF-DOM exhibited more obvious MW-dependent heterogeneity in molecular components compared to SPOF-DOM with higher molecular diversity. Moreover, 2D-COS indicated phenol and carboxyl groups in SMOF-DOM and polysaccharides in SPOF-DOM exhibited superior binding affinities for Pb. Pb binding to HMW-DOM derived from SMOF first occurred in the phenolic groups in fulvic-like substances, while polysaccharides in LMW-DOM first participated in the binding of Pb. In contrast, irrespective of MWs, polysaccharides and humic-like substances with aromatic (CC) groups in SPOF-DOM displayed a faster response to Pb. Furthermore, the polysaccharides which preferentially participated in the binding of Pb to SPOF-DOM and SMOF-derived LMW-DOM may pose a higher risk of Pb in the environment. These results were helpful to understand the effects of sources and size-dependent compositions of DOM on the associated risks of heavy metals in the environments.

Exploring the vertical transport of microplastics in subsurface environments: Lab-scale experiments and field evidence

Microplastics (MPs) defined as smaller 5 mm plastic particles have received increasing attention due to their global occurrence and potential toxicity. This study investigated the effects of environmental factors (rainfall intensity, 13 and 29 mm/h) and MP characteristics (morphology (fiber, flake, and film), polymer type (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS)) and size (100-300, 300-500, and 500-1000 μm)) on the vertical transport of MP in unsaturated soil conditions using lab-scale column experiments. Additionally, the occurrence and characteristics of MP detected in soil/sediment (total 13 samples) and groundwater samples (total 6 samples) were explored in the field study. Laboratory-scale column experiments revealed that heavy rainfall intensity (29 mm/h) increased the degree of MP vertical transport in unsaturated soil conditions and MP fibers showed the greatest vertical mobility among the various morphologies of MPs assessed. For the polymer type and size, the lighter PP polymer or the larger size of MP (500-1000 μm) showed higher mobility. In the field study, a statistical difference in MP abundance was observed depending on the population density and degree of urban development in both soil and groundwater samples. Comparing to the two different types of environmental media samples obtained from the same site, there was a significant difference in the composition of polymer types present while statistically no difference in MP abundance was observed between the two media samples (i.e., soil or sediment and groundwater). In addition, MP fibers and polyethylene (PE) were predominantly detected in our two study areas. These results suggest that various types of MP can pass through the unsaturated zone by water infiltration, even if it takes a long time to reach groundwater. Overall, we found that the degree of vertical transport of the MPs was highly sensitive to environmental conditions and MP characteristics.

Molecular assembly of extracellular polymeric substances regulating aggregation of differently charged nanoplastics and subsequent interactions with bacterial membrane

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) represent an interface between microbial cells and aquatic environment, where nanoplastics acquire coatings to alter their fate and toxicity. However, little is known about molecular interactions governing modification of nanoplastics at biological interfaces. Molecular dynamics simulations combining experiments were conducted to investigate assembly of EPS and its regulatory roles in the aggregation of differently charged nanoplastics and interactions with bacterial membrane. Driven by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, EPS formed micelle-like supramolecular structures with hydrophobic core and amphiphilic exterior. Different components, depending on their hydrophobicity and charge, were found to promote or suppress EPS assembly. Neutral and hydrophobic nanoplastics showed unbiased adsorption of EPS species, while cationic and anionic nanoplastics were distinct and attracted specific molecules of opposite charges. Compared with isolated EPS, assembled EPS concealed hydrophobic groups to be less adsorbed by nanoplastics. Aggregation of nanoplastics was alleviated by EPS due to electrostatic repulsion plus steric hindrance. ESP suppressed binding of cationic nanoplastics to the bacterial membrane through reducing the surface charge. Neutral and anionic nanoplastics showed weak membrane association, but their binding interactions were promoted by EPS. The structural details revealed here provided molecular level insights into modifications of nanoplastics at the eco-environment interface.

Organic amendments for in situ immobilization of heavy metals in soil: A review

There is a growing need for soil remediation due to the increase in heavy metals (HMs) migrating into the soil environment, especially those from man-made sources dominated by industry and agriculture. In situ immobilization technology, because of its lower life cycle environmental footprint, can achieve "green and sustainable remediation" of soil heavy-metal pollution. Among the various in situ immobilization remediation agents, organic amendments (OAs) stand out as they can act as soil conditioners while acting as HMs immobilization agents, and therefore have excellent application prospects. In this paper, the types and remediation effects of OAs for HMs in situ immobilization in soil are summarized. OAs have an important effect on the soil environment and other active substances in soil while interacting with HMs in soil. Based on these factors, the principle and mechanism of HMs in situ immobilization in soil using OAs are summarized. Given the complex differential characteristics of soil itself, it is impossible to determine whether it can remain stable after heavy-metal remediation; therefore, there is still a gap in knowledge regarding the compatibility and long-term effectiveness of OAs with soil. In the future, it is necessary to develop a reasonable HMs contamination remediation program for in situ immobilization and long-term monitoring through interdisciplinary integration techniques. These findings are expected to provide a reference for the development of advanced OAs and their applications in engineering.

Photochemical behavior and photo-induced toxicity of chiral pesticides and their chiral monomers in aqueous environment

The photochemical behaviors of chiral pollutants in aqueous solutions are rarely studied using chiral monomers, which may hamper their precise risk assessment and lead to suspicious conclusions. In this study, we systematically investigated the phototransformation behavior and toxicity evolution of two widely used chiral pesticides (triadimefon (TF) and triadimenol (TN)) at enantiomer and diastereomer levels, and proposed a calculation method of total photolysis rate constants of chiral mixture. Results show that TF and TN could be photodegraded faster in pure water than in natural waters, and the observed photolysis rate constants (k_obs) of TN with two chiral centers exhibit enantioselectivity, i.e., k_obs(TN-RS) = k_obs(TN-SR) > k_obs(TN-RR) = k_obs(TN-SS). The photolysis of TF and TN mainly occurs through their excited singlet and triplet states, respectively. Their photodegradation pathways mainly include dechlorination and elimination of triazole ring. TF could also undergo ether bond cleavage. It is also found that, both TF and TN exhibit photo-induced toxicity to V. fischeri, due to the generation of more toxic products than parent compounds. Furthermore, TN exhibits enantioselective photo-induced toxicity after 240-min irradiation, which could be ascribed to the formation of chiral products. These results could benefit the understanding of enantioselective environmental behavior of chiral pollutants.

MeHg production in eutrophic lakes: Focusing on the roles of algal organic matter and iron-sulfur-phosphorus dynamics

The mechanisms by which eutrophication affects methylmercury (MeHg) production have not been comprehensively summarized, which hinders accurately predicting the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes. In this review, we first discussed the effects of eutrophication on biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). Special attentions were paid to the roles of algal organic matter (AOM) and iron (Fe)-sulfur (S)-phosphorus (P) dynamics in MeHg production. Finally, the suggestions for risk control of MeHg in eutrophic lakes were proposed. AOM can affect in situ Hg methylation by stimulating the abundance and activities of Hg methylating microorganisms and regulating Hg bioavailability, which are dependent on bacteria-strain and algae species, the molecular weight and composition of AOM as well as environmental conditions (e.g., light). Fe-S-P dynamics under eutrophication including sulfate reduction, FeS formation and P release could also play crucial but complicated roles in MeHg production, in which AOM may participate through influencing the dissolution and aggregation processes, structural order and surface properties of HgS nanoparticles (HgS_NP). Future studies should pay more attention to the dynamics of AOM in responses to the changing environmental conditions (e.g., light penetration and redox fluctuations) and how such variations will subsequently affect MeHg production. The effects of Fe-S-P dynamics on MeHg production under eutrophication also deserve further investigations, especially the interactions between AOM and HgS_NP. Remediation strategies with lower disturbance, greater stability and less cost like the technology of interfacial O₂ nanobubbles are urgent to be explored. This review will deepen our understanding of the mechanisms of MeHg production in eutrophic lakes and provide theoretical guidance for its risk control.
