Characterization of copper adsorption onto an alginate encapsulated magnetic sorbent by a combined FT-IR, XPS, and mathematical modeling study

Rapidly reducing cadmium from contaminated farmland soil by novel magnetic recyclable Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads

Reducing cadmium (Cd) content from contaminated farmland soils remains a major challenge due to the difficulty in separating commonly used adsorbents from soils. This study synthesized novel millimeter-sized magnetic Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads (MFBs) through a facile one-step gelation process incorporating alginate. The MFBs inherit the environmental stability of alginate and enhance its mechanical strength by hybridizing Fe3O4 and clay mineral components. MFBs can be easily separated from flooded soils by magnets. When applied to 12 Cd-polluted paddy soils and 14 Cd-polluted upland soils, MFBs achieved Cd(II) removal rates ranging from 16.9% to 62.2% and 9.8%-54.6%, respectively, within a 12-h period. The MFBs predominantly targeted the exchangeable and acid soluble, and reducible fractions of Cd, with significantly enhanced removal efficiencies in paddy soils compared to upland soils. Notably, MFBs exhibited superior adsorption performance in soils with lower pH and organic matter (OM) content, where the bioavailability and mobility of Cd are heightened. The reduction of Cd content by MFBs is a sustainable and safe method, as it permanently removes the bioavailable Cd from soil, rather than temporarily reducing its bioavailability. The functional groups such as -SH, -OH, present in attapulgite and alginate of MFBs, played a crucial role in Cd(II) adsorption. Additionally, attapulgite and zeolite provided a porous matrix structure that further enhanced Cd(II) adsorption. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that both chemical precipitation and surface complexation contributed to Cd(II) removal. The MFBs maintained 87.6% Cd removal efficiency after 5 regeneration cycles. The surface of the MFBs exposed new adsorption sites and increased the specific surface area during multiple cycles with Cd-contaminated soil. This suggests that MFBs treatment with magnetic retrieval is a potentially effective pathway for the rapid removal of Cd from contaminated farmland soils.

Detection and mapping of the seasonal distribution of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and valorization as a biosorbent of Pb(II) in water

In the present research, the presence of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) on the surface of the San Jose Dam located in the city of San Luis Potosi, S.L.P, Mexico, was monitored and mapped. The monitoring was conducted for 2 years (2018-2020) with remote sensing data from OLI Landsat 8 sensors, based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The results demonstrated the capability and accuracy of this method, where it was observed that the aboveground cover area, proliferation, and distribution of water hyacinth are influenced by climatic and anthropogenic factors during the four seasons of the year. As part of a sustainable environmental control of this invasive species, the use of water hyacinth (WH) root (RO), stem (ST), and leaf (LE) components as adsorbent material for Pb(II) present in aqueous solution was proposed. The maximum adsorption capacity was observed at pH 5 and 25 °C and was 107.3, 136.8, and 120.8 mg g-1 for RO, ST, and LE, respectively. The physicochemical characterization of WH consisted of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 physisorption, infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), charge distribution, and zero charge point (pHPZC). Due to the chemical nature of WH, several Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms were proposed such as electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, microprecipitation, and π-cation.

Enhancing copper and lead adsorption in water by in-situ generation of calcium carbonate on alginate/chitosan biocomposite surfaces

Chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA)-based biocomposites (CSA) were prepared with the in-situ generation of Calcium Carbonate (CSAX_Ca) through a simple, straightforward, economical, and eco-friendly procedure. Different drying conditions (X) were tested to achieve suitable structural and surface characteristics to enhance adsorption capacity: freeze-dried (L), vacuum-dried with methanol (M), and freeze-dried + vacuum-dried with methanol (LM). Temperature and adsorbent dosage effects on the adsorption capacity of Cu2+ or Pb2+ were examined. Results showed that the higher-yielding biocomposite (CSALM_Ca) exhibited rapid adsorption and good diffusion properties, achieving removal above 90 % within contaminant initial concentration ranges of 10-100 mg/L. At 35 °C, a pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir model effectively described kinetics and isotherms, revealing maximum adsorption (qe, max) of 429 mgCu2+/L and 1742 mgPb2+/g. Characterization through FTIR, XRD, and SEM of the as-prepared adsorbents confirmed the presence of CaCO3 in vaterite and calcite forms and the influence of drying conditions on the material morphology. Post-adsorption material characterization, in combination with adsorption findings, revealed chemisorption processes involving Ca2+ ion exchange for Cu2+ or Pb2+, resulting in surface-insoluble compounds. The best-performing material showed that after three reuse cycles, the removal of Cu2+ and Pb2+ decreased to 75 % and 62 %, respectively.

Preparation of magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

In this study, magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres (MDCM) were prepared by reverse emulsion-double crosslinking method (carbodiimide followed by glutaraldehyde) for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The obtained magnetic adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, BET, and 13C NMR. The effects of the pH, contact time, initial concentration, and competitive metal cations (Na(I), Ca(II), or Mg(II)) on Pb(II) adsorption were investigated. The results revealed that MDCM exhibited high removal performance over a wide pH range and in the presence of competitive metal cations. The maximum adsorption capacity of MDCM for Pb(II) is 214.63 mg g-1 at pH 3, which is higher than most recently reported magnetic adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms can be described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. In addition, MDCM is easy to regenerate and can be reused five cycles with high adsorption capacity. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed by FTIR and XPS analysis. Overall, MDCM has practical application potential in removing Pb(II) from contaminated wastewater due to its high adsorption efficiency, good reusability, and convenient magnetic separation.

Ion-imprinted chitosan prepared without cross-linking agent for efficient selective adsorption of Al(III) from rare earth solution

In the aqueous phase, ion-imprinted materials exhibit excellent selective adsorption properties for specific ions, but their complicated preparation process and large amount of crosslinker consumption limit their application. In this study, ion-imprinted chitosan (IIP-CS) was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method without a cross-linking agent for the efficient adsorption of trace amounts of Al(III) from a rare earth solution. The structures and morphology of IIP-CS were analyzed by FT-IR, SEM, and XRD. The Al(III) adsorption characteristics of IIP-CS were investigated under various preparation processes and adsorption conditions. It was found that the optimum mass ratio of IIP-CS is 3 : 1 and pH is 3 and the adsorption capacity reaches up to 40.36 mg g-1. In addition, three different isothermal models-Temkin, Freundlich, and Langmuir-were used to analyze the equilibrium adsorption of IIP-CS in aqueous solution. The results obtained are consistent with the Langmuir model. The adsorption process of Al(III) on IIP-CS follows a pseudo-secondary kinetic model, suggesting that electron sharing or exchange between IIP-CS and Al(III) is a key factor affecting its adsorption rate. IIP-CS shows high selectivity coefficients for Al(III) in mixtures of La(III), Y(III), and Gd(III), which are 792.50, 163.26, and 55.16, respectively. The mechanism of action is the formation of a complex via amidation between Al(III) and IIP-CS. IIP-CS is an adsorbent with excellent regeneration and selective adsorption performance in aqueous solution.

Development of a novel magnetic metal-organic framework for the immobilization of short-chain dehydrogenase for the asymmetric reduction of pro-chiral ketone

Short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) acts as a biocatalyst in the synthesis of chiral alcohols with high optical purity. Herein, we achieved immobilization via crosslinking on novel magnetic metal-organic framework nanoparticles with a three-layer shell structure (Fe3O4@PDA@Cu (PABA)). The results of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the morphology and cross-linking property of immobilized SDR, which was more durable, stable, and reusable and exhibited better kinetic performance than free enzyme. The SDR and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) were co-immobilized and then used for the asymmetric reduction of COBE and ethyl 2-oxo-4-phenylbutanoate (OPBE). These finding suggest that enzymes immobilized on novel MOF nanoparticles can serve as promising biocatalysts for asymmetric reduction prochiral ketones into chiral alcohols.

Effect of the magnetic core in alginate/gum composite on adsorption of divalent copper, cadmium, and lead ions in the aqueous system

The change of composition of an adsorbent material has been widely used as a method to increase its adsorption capacity, particularly concerning adsorbents made of polysaccharides. Introducing magnetic adsorbents into contaminated water treatment systems is a highly promising strategy, as it promotes the metal ions removal from water. Considering this, gum Arabic (GA) was associated with alginate (Alg), when magnetite nanoparticles were present or absent, to produce beads that were utilised to take up Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) from aqueous solution. After a complete characterisation (for which Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and swelling were used), the adsorption properties were established using batch and column tests. The magnetic beads (MAlg/GA) demonstrated improved adsorption in comparison with the beads made without magnetite (Alg/GA) under the same conditions. In normal adsorption conditions (pH 6.0, 25 °C, 2.5 g L-1 of adsorbent dosage), the highest uptake capacities recorded for the MAlg/GA beads were: for Cu(II), 1.33 mmol g-1; Cd(II), 1.59 mmol g-1; and for Pb(II), 1.43 mmol g-1. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models provided good fits for the adsorption of these metals. Overall, ion exchange and physical forces led to the uptake of these metals by both Alg/GA and MAlg/GA; moreover, the functional groups on the beads played crucial roles as binding sites. Additionally, it was observed that flow rates of >2 mL min-1 did not produce noticeable changes in uptake levels over the same flow period. It was found that the efficient eluting agent was HNO3 (0.2 M). In some cases, the metals were not removed fully from the used beads during the first five cycles of regeneration and reuse. The results of this investigation show that these beads are efficient adsorbents for the removal of metal ions from spiked well water samples.

Effect of biocomposite production factors on the development of an eco-friendly chitosan/alginate-based adsorbent with enhanced copper removal efficiency

Nowadays, wastewater treatment is a critical concern, particularly regarding the removal of heavy metals through adsorption methods. Extensive research has been conducted on obtaining high-yield and environmentally friendly adsorbents. Natural polymer adsorbents especially have shown promise in ion and organic molecule adsorption. To enhance the practical applicability of adsorbents, the combination of biopolymers to form biocomposites is a promising alternative. In this study, adsorbents based on a 1:1 wt./wt. of chitosan (CS) and alginate (SA) were prepared. The influence of the regeneration route and drying conditions on the copper adsorption capacity was investigated, along with reaction parameters such as contact time, adsorbent particle size, and pH. The highest adsorption capacity was observed in the composite material obtained through a one-pot regeneration process and freeze-dried. The CSAR3L sample exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 288 mg Cu(II)/g after 360 min at 25 °C. The synergistic effect between the CS and SA precursors was confirmed by analyzing the individual precursors and their mechanical mixture. The initial adsorption rates at pH 6 followed the order: CSAR3-L > Bk-CSR3L > Bk-SAR3L + Bk-CSR3L > Bk-SAR3L. The physicochemical and morphological properties of the materials were studied by FTIR, XRD, DLS, XPS, optical microscopy, EDS-SEM, elemental chemical analysis, and TGA-DTG. The utilization of different drying methods resulted in the formation of calcium carbonate crystalline phases in the as-prepared materials, thus creating substantial adsorption active sites. After the adsorption process, hydroxylated copper sulfate phases and a significant decrease in calcium concentration were observed, indicating that an ion exchange adsorption mechanism occurred. The analysis of adsorption kinetics and the shape of the adsorption isotherms, in agreement with the characterization results, suggested the presence of multiple active sites and the formation of a chemisorption monolayer.

Efficient removal of heavy metal and antibiotics from wastewater by phosphate-modified hydrochar

The preparation, characterization and adsorption performance of the phosphate-modified hydrochar (P-hydrochar) for Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin removal are investigated. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption behavior fit well with the Hill model with the adsorption capacity of 119.61 and 98.38 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption kinetic process are accurately described by the Pseudo-second-order. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin have synergy in the binary contaminant system, which reveals that Pb(II) adsorption amount is augmented. While ciprofloxacin adsorption amount is also augmented at low Pb(II) concentration and hindered at high Pb(II) concentration. Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms on P-hydrochar (e.g. precipitation, π-π interaction and complexation) are different from the ciprofloxacin (e.g. hydrogen bonding, pore filling, electrostatic attraction). Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption process are further analyzed by the density functional theory. The coexisted ions have little influenced on Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption. P-hydrochar still has large Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity after five cycles. This result indicates that poplar sawdust waste can be converted into an efficient adsorbent to remove Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin from wastewater,.

Blood Coagulation Activities of Cotton-Alginate-Copper Composites

Alginate-based materials have gained significant attention in the medical industry due to their biochemical properties. In this article, we aimed to synthesize Cotton-Alginate-Copper Composite Materials (COT-Alg(-)Cu(2+)). The main purpose of this study was to assess the biochemical properties of new composites in the area of blood plasma coagulation processes, including activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin time (TT). This study also involved in vitro antimicrobial activity evaluation of materials against representative colonies of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and antifungal susceptibility tests. The materials were prepared by immersing cotton fibers in an aqueous solution of sodium alginate, followed by ionic cross-linking of alginate chains within the fibers with Cu(II) ions to yield antimicrobial activity. The results showed that the obtained cotton-alginate-copper composites were promising materials to be used in biomedical applications, e.g., wound dressing.

Magnetic Hydrogel Beads as a Reusable Adsorbent for Highly Efficient and Rapid Removal of Aluminum: Characterization, Response Surface Methodology Optimization, and Evaluation of Isotherms, Kinetics, and Thermodynamic Studies

Biopolymers such as alginate and gelatin have attracted much attention because of their exceptional adsorption properties and biocompatibility. The magnetic hydrogel beads produced and used in this study had a core structure composed of magnetite nanoparticles and gelatin and a shell structure composed of alginate. The combination of the metal-ion binding ability of alginate and the mechanical strength of gelatin in magnetic hydrogel beads presents a new approach for the removal of metal from water sources. The beads were designed for aluminum removal and fully characterized using various methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, microcomputed tomography, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Statistical experimental designs were employed to optimize the parameters of the adsorption and recovery processes. Plackett-Burman Design, Box-Behnken Design, and Central Composite Design were used for identifying the significant factors and optimizing the parameters of the adsorption and recovery processes, respectively. The optimum parameters determined for adsorption are as follows: pH: 4, contact time: 30 min, adsorbent amount: 600 mg; recovery time: reagent 1 M HNO3; and contact time: 40 min. The adsorption process was described by using the Langmuir isotherm model. It reveals a homogeneous bead surface and monolayer adsorption with an adsorption capacity of 5.25 mg g-1. Limit of detection and limit of quantification values were calculated as 4.3 and 14 μg L-1, respectively. The adsorption process was described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which assumes that chemisorption is the rate-controlling mechanism. Thermodynamic studies indicate that adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorbent was reusable for 10 successive adsorption-desorption cycles with a quantitative adsorption of 98.2% ± 0.3% and a recovery of 99.4% ± 2.6%. The minimum adsorbent dose was determined as 30 g L-1 to achieve quantitative adsorption of aluminum. The effects of the inorganic ions were also investigated. The proposed method was applied to tap water and carboy water samples, and the results indicate that magnetic hydrogel beads can be an effective and reusable bioadsorbent for the detection and removal of aluminum in water samples. The recovery values obtained by using the developed method were quantitative and consistent with the results obtained from the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer.

Impact of the Configurational Microstructure of Carboxylate-Rich Chitosan Beads on Its Adsorptive Removal of Diclofenac Potassium from Contaminated Water

A novel adsorbent-contaminant system was investigated for its ability to remove a contaminant of emerging concern, diclofenac potassium, from contaminated water. Bio-based crosslinked chitosan beads functionalized with poly(itaconic acid) side chains were examined for their potential to remove the emerging contaminant. To evaluate the impact of the polymeric microstructure on its adsorptive capacity, several adsorbent samples were prepared using different combinations of initiator and monomeric concentrations. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the crosslinking of the chitosan chains and the incorporation of the carboxylic groups on the surface of the final chitosan beads. After the grafting copolymerization process, an additional peak at 1726 cm-1 corresponding to the carboxylic C=O groups of the grafted chains appeared, indicating the successful preparation of poly(IA)-g-chitosan. Thermal stability studies showed that the grafting copolymerization improved the thermal stability of the beads. X-ray and Scanning Electron Microscopy confirmed the successful grafting of the itaconic acid on the surface of the beads. The study revealed that the higher the initiator concentration, the greater the number of side chains, whereas the higher the monomeric concentration, the longer the length of these side chains. The adsorption mechanism involved hydrogen bonding to the carboxylic groups of the grafted chains along with n-π* stacking interaction between the amino group of the chitosan and the aromatic rings of diclofenac potassium. The adsorption efficiencies of diclofenac potassium onto the grafted beads were significantly improved compared to the unfunctionalized chitosan beads, reaching values above 90%. The removal efficiency of grafted chitosan increased with an increase in the concentration in the range of 10-30 ppm and then flattened out in the range of 30-50 ppm. The removal efficiencies of 1-50 ppm of DCF ranged between about 75% and 92% for the grafted chitosan and 30-45% for the crosslinked chitosan. Rapid adsorption occurred within 20 min for all grafted sample combinations, and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model with qe values ranging from 28 to 44.25 g/mg and R2 values greater than 0.9915. The results highlight the potential of grafted chitosan beads in removing emerging contaminants from contaminated water without harming the environment.

Chitosan-based hydrogel system for efficient removal of Cu[II] and sustainable utilization of spent adsorbent as a catalyst for environmental applications

The growing requirement for clean potable water requires sustainable methods of eliminating heavy metal ions and other organic contaminants. Herein, we synthesized a novel dual-purpose magnetically separable chitosan-based hydrogel system (CSGO-R@IO) that can efficiently remove toxic Cu2+ pollutants from water. FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, VSM, XPS analyses were used to characterize the synthesized hydrogel. The CSGO-R@IO hydrogel showed high swelling capacity (1036.06 %), prominent adsorption capacity for Cu2+ ions (119.5 mg/g), and good recyclability up to four cycles. The adsorption data of Cu+2 ions on hydrogel fitted better to the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9942), indicating spontaneous monolayer adsorption of Cu2+ ions on a homogenous surface. The adsorption kinetic studies fitted better with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.9992), suggesting that the adsorption process was controlled by chemisorption. We also showed a sustainable way to convert harmful Cu2+ pollutants into valuable Cu nanoparticles for catalysis, and Cu nanoparticles loaded hydrogel (CSGO-R@IO/Cu) had high catalytic activity. Hence, building attractive multipurpose hydrogel systems will give us new ideas about how to design and use new adsorbents to clean water in real life. They will also help in recycle metals (copper and maybe others) to conserve resources.

Synthesis of magnetic sodium lignosulfonate hydrogel(Fe3O4@LS) and its adsorption behavior for Cd2+ in wastewater

Heavy metal pollution is becoming increasingly serious. Heavy metal pollutants are nonbiodegradable and can be bioenriched through the food chain, and thus, they greatly threaten the environment and human health. Hydrogels, as an ideal adsorbent, have been widely used to treat heavy metal industrial wastewater. Sodium lignosulfonate hydrogel (LS) was prepared by free-radical grafting copolymerization, and nano-Fe3O4 particles were loaded in LS by an in-situ precipitation method (Fe3O4@LS). The magnetic properties and adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@LS are closely related to the load capacity of Fe3O4. XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET, and TGA analyses of the materials were performed. Subsequently, the removal effect of the typical pollutant Cd2+ in heavy metal-polluted water was studied with Fe3O4@LS as the adsorbent. The influences of the Fe3O4@LS dosage and initial pH were investigated, and the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were further explored and discussed. Finally, the adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4@LS on Cd2+ was obtained. Results show that Fe3O4@LS has a more stable spatial network structure than LS, and the pore size, specific surface area and active sites increase. The maximum adsorption capacity can reach 88.00 mg/g when pH = 6 and the dosage of Fe3O4@LS is 1000 mg/L. The adsorption of Cd2+ by Fe3O4@LS conforms to pseudosecond-order kinetics and the Temkin isothermal adsorption model. Further mechanistic investigations show that the sorption of Cd2+ on Fe3O4@LS is mainly attributed to surface complexation, electrostatic attraction and coprecipitation. The coexistence of cations in water will inhibit the adsorption of Fe3O4@LS. Fe3O4@LS has superparamagnetism and a good response to an external magnetic field. The adsorption rate can still reach >60 % after four elutions with NaCl as the eluent. This material can be reused and has good application potential.

Multilayer adsorption of lead (Pb) and fulvic acid by Chlorella pyrenoidosa: Mechanism and impact of environmental factors

When the multilayer adsorption of lead (Pb) and fulvic acid (FA) occurs on algal surface, the adsorption capacity of Pb on the algae will increase dramatically, thus increasing the environmental risk of Pb. However, the corresponding mechanism and the influence of environmental factors on the multilayer adsorption remain unclear. Here, microscopic observation methods and batch adsorption experiments were exactly designed to investigate the adsorption behavior of multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA on algal surface. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that carboxyl groups were the major functional groups responsible for the binding of Pb ions in multilayer adsorption, and its number was more than that in monolayer adsorption. The solution pH, with an optimal pH of 7, was a critical factor influencing the occurrence of multilayer adsorption because it influences the protonation of the involved functional groups and determines the concentration of Pb²⁺ and Pb-FA in the solution. Increasing the temperature was beneficial for multilayer adsorption, with ΔH for Pb and FA varied from +17.12 to +47.68 kJ/mol and +16.19 to +57.74 kJ/mol, respectively. The multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA onto algal surface also followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model, but was extremely slower than the monolayer adsorption of Pb and FA by 30 times and 15 orders of magnitude, respectively. Therefore, the adsorption of Pb and FA in the ternary system had a different adsorption behavior than that in the binary system, which verified the presence of multilayer adsorption of Pb and FA and further support the multilayer adsorption mechanism. This work is important to provide data support for water ecological risk prevention and control of heavy metals.

H2O2 modified peanut shell-derived biochar/alginate composite beads as a green adsorbent for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution

In this study, a novel composite bead (MPB-ALG) was prepared by encapsulating H₂O₂ modified peanut shell-derived biochar (MPB) into alginate matrix through a facile method. The structure and properties of prepared materials were characterized using FTIR, BET, SEM, and XPS. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to compare Cu(II) adsorption performance of MPB, plain alginate beads (ALG) and MPB-ALG. The effect parameters of the components, solution pH, contact time, initial concentration and coexisting ions were studied systematically. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the optimized MPB-ALG-1 (MPB/alginate = 1:1 w/w%) was 117.4 mg g^-1 at pH 5, which was much higher than that of MPB (37.4 mg g^-1). The adsorption kinetics and isotherms data of Cu(II) on MPB-ALG-1 were well described by Elovich kinetic model and Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Compared with plain ALG beads, MPB-ALG-1 exhibited better reusability and anti-interference of coexisting ions. Finally, the adsorption mechanisms of Cu(II) on MPB-ALG-1 beads were revealed by FTIR and XPS analysis. The experimental results demonstrated that MPB-ALG-1 beads can be used as an environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) from wastewater.

Characteristics of dissolved organic matter in urban road runoff under different traffic densities in Beijing, China

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in road runoff under different traffic densities were compared using resin fractionation, molecular weight distribution analysis, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Heavy traffic density strongly increased the concentration of DOM in road runoff, resulting in higher dissolved organic carbon. The distribution of molecular weights in DOM was not influenced by the traffic. DOM was dominated by colloidal organic matter with molecular weight in the 1 kDa to 0.45 μm size range. Hydrophobic fractions accounted for a large proportion than hydrophilic fractions in DOM, and hydrophobic acids increased with higher traffic density. Traffic density did not alter the fluorescent substances in DOM, including fulvic-like UV fluorescent substances and protein-like substances. However, more tryptophan-like protein substances were found in DOM from road runoff with heavy traffic. Moreover, the aromatization degree of DOM was not affected by heavy traffic, while the degree of humification decreased.

The mechanistic insights into the leaching behaviors of potentially toxic elements from the indigenous zinc smelting slags under the slag dumping site scenario

Since lager quantities of the zinc (Zn) smelting slags were traditionally dumped at the indigenous Zn smelting sites, the release characterization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from the Zn smelting slags under various environmental conditions were of great significance for an environmental risk analysis. The acidification of the Zn smelting slags to pH= 4 and 6 would result in the leaching concentrations of Cd and Mn exceeding the fourth-class standard of surface water quality standard in China (GB3838-2002). Notably, most metals exhibited an amphoteric leaching pattern, where the highest leached concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were 4.15, 4.21, 140.0, 78.1, 156.9 and 477.0 mg/L, respectively. In addition, the highest release of toxic metals within 96 h reached 0.17 % of As, 3.50 % of Cd, 2.77 % of Cu, 6.92 % of Mn, 0.13 % of Pb, and 2.57 % of Zn, respectively. The combined results of various characterization techniques suggested that the PTEs remobilization effected by rhizosphere-like organic acids were mainly controlled by the precipitation of newly formed Fe, Mn and Al (hydr) oxides and the complexation of organic ligands. The present study results could provide valuable insights into the long-term leaching behaviors of PTEs from the Zn smelting slags to reduce ecological hazard.

New insights into the interactions between Pb(II) and fruit waste biosorbent

Fruit waste is a sustainable biosorbent for heavy metal removal from wastewater. Elucidation of adsorption mechanism is imperative for the process control and development of effective adsorbents. In this study, watermelon rind (WR) exhibited selective and efficient Pb(II) adsorption with a maximum uptake of 230.5 mg/g at pH 5.0. The WR-packed bed column showed high Pb(II) uptake and robust durability over 10 adsorption-desorption cycles with long breakthrough time of 8-13 h (89-144 bed volume), and 95% of sequestered Pb(II) was rapidly desorbed in 1-2 h by 0.05 M HCl. Spectroscopic characterization by FTIR and XPS identified hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, and ether groups as the binding sites for Pb(II) via the binding force of complexation. Physicochemical analysis showed that ion exchange with Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ accounted for 19% of Pb(II) adsorption by WR; electrostatic attraction and microprecipitation jointly contributed. Quantum chemistry simulation verified the interactions between Pb(II) and binding sites and revealed carboxyl was the preferential functional group. The findings corroborate the applicability of WR in scale-up Pb(II) removal/recovery from wastewater and elaborate the mechanisms of Pb(II) adsorption by the WR biosorbent. This also provides insights into the behavior of heavy metals in other liquid/solid interfaces.

Enhanced adsorption of copper ions from aqueous solution by two-step DTPA-modified magnetic cellulose hydrogel beads

Copper contamination of water is one of the most pressing environmental problems which has attracted extensive concern in recent decades. In this study, a series of magnetic adsorbents were synthesized by two-step modified cellulose with N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (KH-792) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) using for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. Adsorption performance of Cu(II) was systematically investigated under various treatment conditions as the effect of solution pH, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption process was found to match better with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the equilibrium adsorption data were well described by Langmuir model, which meant predominant governance of monolayer chemical adsorption. The analysis of FTIR and XPS confirmed the possible adsorption mechanism between Cu(II) and the synthesized adsorbents was electrostatic attraction and the chemical coordination. Compared with MCCs and APMC, DPMC showed higher adsorption capacity of Cu(II), reaching maximum adsorption capacity of 298.62 mg·g^-1 at pH 6. Given this, ease of preparation, low cost and excellent reusability, DPMC will be promising adsorbent for application in Cu(II) removal from wastewater.

Enhanced adsorptive removal of Cr(III) from the complex solution by NTA-modified magnetic mesoporous microspheres

The Fe₃O₄@nSiO₂@mSiO₂/NTA (FNMs-NTA) was prepared by grafting magnetic mesoporous microspheres with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(III) from complex solutions. Some characterization techniques including Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize functional groups and pore structure of FNMs-NTA, which proved that NTA was successfully decorated onto the magnetic Fe₃O₄@nSiO₂@mSiO₂ (FNMs) and FNMs-NTA featured a regular mesoporous structure. The batch adsorption of Cr(III) by FNMs-NTA exhibited high adsorption capacity (16.0 mg·g^-1 at pH 3.0, and 25 °C). Adsorption data followed Freundlich isotherm and adsorption process was a spontaneous adsorption process. Moreover, the kinetics of adsorption were well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. FNMs-NTA showed resistance to interfering inorganic cations (Na⁺, Ca²⁺) and complexing agents (EDTA). Furthermore, FNMs-NTA exhibited remarkable regeneration performance and easy separation under external magnetic field. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the FNMs-NTA had excellent adsorption ability for Cr(III) because of the ion exchange and surface complexation.

MgO-loaded nitrogen and phosphorus self-doped biochar: High-efficient adsorption of aquatic Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ and its remediation efficiency on heavy metal contaminated soil

In this study, the MgO-loaded fish scale biochar (MgO-FB) was synthesized by impregnation of MgCl₂ using fish scales as precursor, and the modified biochar was applied for the adsorption of aquatic Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺, and the immobilization of heavy metals in soils. The maximum adsorption capacities of MgO-FB for Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ were 505.8, 327.2, and 661.2 mg/g, respectively. In addition, MgO-FB can keep the excellent adsorption capacity under various environmental disturbances including pH, humic acid, and high ionic strength. Multiple characterizations and comparative experiments have demonstrated that the hydroxyapatite components and the MgO micro-nanoparticles on MgO-FB enhanced the adsorption capacity for Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ through ion-exchange and precipitation process. The metal-π electron coordination and complexation with oxygen-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-containing groups were also responsible for the removal of heavy metal ions. Besides, MgO-FB also performed excellently for the immobilization of Cu, Cd, and Pb in soils, and the contents of available Cu, Cd, and Pb were reduced by 84.2%, 74.2%, and 53.7% respectively with the addition of MgO-FB. In general, these results show that waste fish scales co-pyrolysis with MgCl₂ impregnation can be considered as a promising and efficient material for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated waters and soils.

High-efficiency adsorption of Cd(II) and Co(II) by ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride-modified orange peel as a novel synthesized adsorbent

The treatment of heavy metal (HM) wastewater is a critical and considerable challenge. Fruit peel-based HM adsorption is a promising way for the water pollution control and the reuse of agricultural waste. In this study, a novel adsorbent based on orange peel was synthesized for the first time by introducing abundant -COO groups with ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTAD) to eliminate Cd(II) and Co(II) of sewage solution. The synthesized adsorbent displayed excellent adsorption capacity of 51.020 and 40.486 mg/g for Cd(II) and Co(II), respectively, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 5 min, following the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model. Surface characterization of adsorbents by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that ion exchange, complexation, and physical adsorption could occur during the adsorption process. The rapid and highly efficient adsorption performance suggests EDTAD-modified synthesized orange peel possesses great potential for HM removal from sewage systems.

Large-Scale Fabrication of Graded Convex Structure for Superhydrophobic Coating Inspired by Nature

The addition of toxic substances and poor durability severely limit the market applications of superhydrophobic coatings in the oil−water-separation industry, anti-icing, and self-cleaning surfaces. In order to solve the above problems, a stable, strong, fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating was prepared according to natural inspiration. In this study, polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) was produced by the hydrothermal method, and micro-nanoparticle clusters composed of PDVB particles of different sizes were prepared by controlling the ratio of raw materials, which was then attached to the substrate surface by a simple spraying technique. A rough coating with a lotus-leaf-like layered protruding structure was constructed by depositing particle clusters of different sizes. In the end, the prepared coating showed attractive superhydrophobicity, with a maximum contact angle (CA) that reached up to 160°. In addition, the coating had long-lasting superhydrophobic properties in various environments, such as common liquid and acidic and alkaline solutions. Moreover, in the oil−water-separation process, the superhydrophobic filter paper was still able to obtain a separation efficiency of more than 85% after being used 50 times, and it maintained a contact angle of >150°. At the same time, the coating had excellent dye resistance and self-cleaning performance.

Production of Lignocellulolytic Enzymes and Phenolic Compounds by Lentinus strigosus from the Amazon Using Solid-State Fermentation (SSF) of Guarana (Paullinia cupana) Residue

The Amazon rainforest has a rich biodiversity, and studies of Basidiomycete fungi that have biomolecules of biotechnological interest are relevant. The use of lignocellulosic biomass in biotechnological processes proposes an alternative use, and also adds value to the material when employed in the bioconversion of agro-industrial waste. In this context, this study evaluate the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes (carboxymethylcellulases (CMCase), xylanase, pectinase, laccase) as well as phenolic compounds and proteases by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using the fungus Lentinus strigosus isolated from Amazon. The guarana (Paullinia cupana) residue was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SSF was carried out with 60% humidification of the residue, at 30 °C, for 10 days. The lignocellulosic biomass presented fragmented structures with irregular shapes and porosities, and was mainly constituted by cellulose (19.16%), hemicellulose (32.83%), and lignin (6.06%). During the SSF, significant values of CMCase (0.84 U/g) on the 8th day, xylanase (1.00 U/g) on the 7th day, pectinase (2.19 U/g) on the 6th day, laccase (176.23 U/mL) on the 5th day, phenolic compounds (10.27 μg/mL) on the 1st day, soluble proteins (0.08 mg/mL) on the 5th day, and protease (8.30 U/mL) on the 6th day were observed. In general, the agro-industrial residue used provided promising results as a viable alternative for use as a substrate in biotechnological processes.

The chemical structure characteristics of dissolved black carbon and their binding with phenanthrene

The elucidation of interactions between the dissolved black carbon (DBC) in biochar and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) is crucial for controlling the environmental behavior of HOCs. The complicated chemical structures of DBCs result in diverse interaction mechanisms between DBCs and HOCs, which were driven by different chemical structures in DBCs. In the present study, ten DBCs were extracted from rice straw and corncob biochars and their chemical structures were characterized and analyzed. The binding of phenanthrene (Phen) with DBC were studied through fluorescence quenching experiments. DBCs with low concentration (1 mg C/L) were found to complex with high amounts of Phen per unit mass. No significant difference was found in the amount of the bound Phen per unit amount of DBC when the concentration of DBC increased beyond >5 mg C/L. The dominant mechanisms involved in the binding of Phen by DBCs are speculated to be hydrophobic interactions, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA), and chemical partition, which was driven by the fatty carbon chain, aromatic rings, and quinone groups or ester groups, respectively. This study elucidates the interactions between DBC and Phen, which is of great significance for understanding the environmental behavior of HOCs.

Core-shell alginate beads as green reactor to synthesize grafted composite beads to efficiently boost single/co-adsorption of dyes and Pb(II)

A series of sodium alginate (SA) grafted polymer composite beads were synthesized by a solution free-radical graft polymerization reaction performed in a surface crosslinked alginate bead reactor. The outer surface of the precursor droplet containing reactants including SA, acrylamide (AM), N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA), ammonium persulfate (APS), sepiolite (SP) and gelatin (GE) was instantly crosslinked with Ca²⁺ ions to form a capsule-like bead when it was dropped into aqueous solution of calcium chloride, and simultaneously the reactants inside the capsule-like "bead reactor" were polymerized in-situ to form new composite beads with crosslinked network structure, abundant functional groups, single or co-adsorption ability and easily separable advantages. The optimal composite bead shows high adsorption capacity of 390.78, 1425.65 and 533.91 mg/g towards Methylene Blue (MB), Basic Fuchsin (BF) and Pb(II), respectively. After adsorption by the composite bead, 99.71% of MB, 99.99% of BF and 99.97% of Pb(II) were removed from original dye or Pb(II) solutions. Moreover, above 99.22% of BF and 95.33% of Pb(II) was co-removed from their binary mixture (BF concentration, 100 mg/L; Pb(II) concentration, 50 mg/L). This paper provides a simple green way to synthesize efficient and recyclable biopolymer-based adsorbents capable of purifying dyes and heavy metal ions in water.

Mechanistic insights into soil heavy metals desorption by biodegradable polyelectrolyte under electric field

In this study, we firstly used alginate to enhance an electrokinetic technology to remediate soil contaminated with divalent heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺). The mechanisms of alginate-associated migration of metal ions in electric field were confirmed. Alginate resulted in a high electrical current during electrokinetic process, and soil conductivity also increased after remediation. Obvious changes in both electroosmotic flow and soil pH were observed. Moreover, these factors were affected by increasing alginate dosage. The highest Cu (95.82%) and Zn (97.33%) removal efficiencies were obtained by introducing 1 wt% alginate. Alginate can desorb Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions from soil by forming unstable gels, which could be dissociated through electrolysis. However, Pb²⁺ ions did not easily migrate out of the contaminated soil. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show Pb²⁺ ions could form a more stable coordination sphere in metal complexes than Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions. The metal removal efficiency was decreased by increasing alginate dosage at a high level. More alginate could provide more carboxyl ligands for divalent metal ions to stabilize gels, which were difficult to dissociate by electrolysis. In summary, the results indicate it is potential for introducing alginate into an electrokinetic system to remediate Cu- and Zn- contaminated soil.

Fabrication of recyclable magnetic biosorbent from eggshell membrane for efficient adsorption of dye

Magnetic eggshell membrane powder (MESM-P) were synthesized and used to remove Congo red (CR) dye from wastewater. The biosorption performance were evaluated at varying operating conditions, including initial pH, dye concentrations, contact time, and temperatures. Thekinetics studies revealed that the adsorption process can be better described by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process conformed better to the Langmuir model with a maximum biosorption capacity of 1037.02 mg g^-1 _. An ethanol-water system was employed as a fast, effective and harmless desorptionsolvent for the regeneration of biosorbent. The system of 70% ethanol-30%water atpH 13 presented the maximum desorption efficiency up to 96.16%. The MESM-P could be easily regenerated and remained a high adsorption efficiency of 79.55% after ten reusing cycles. Therefore, the prepared MESM-P biosorbent could be a promising candidate for the removal of dye pollution from wastewater.

Nanodispersions of Polyelectrolytes Based on Humic Substances: Isolation, Physico-Chemical Characterization and Evaluation of Biological Activity

Natural polyelectrolytes, including in the form of complexes with colloidal particles, are increasingly used in pharmacy due to the possibility of regulated attachment of medicinal substances and their targeted delivery to the target organ. However, the formation, stability, and molecular-mass characteristics of polyelectrolyte nanodispersions (ND) vary depending on the nature and composition of the medium of their origin. This is due to the lack of standardized approaches to quality control and regulatory documentation for most natural ND. In this paper, we first introduced the isolation, followed by investigations into their physico-chemical properties and bioactivity. Using the dried droplet method, we were able to detect the “coffee ring effect”. Fractographic studies of the surface structure of EHA and FA dried samples using SEM showed its heterogeneity and the presence of submicron particles encapsulated in the internal molecular cavities of polyelectrolyte. FTIR spectroscopy revealed the ND chemical structure of benzo-α-pyron and benzo-γ-pyron, consisting of nanoparticles and a branched frame part. The main elements detected by X-ray fluorescence in humic substance extract and fulvic acid include Si, P, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, whereas Fe is in high concentrations. The UV-spectra and fluorescent radiation demonstrated the possibility of studying the effect of the fulvate chromone structure on its optical properties. It is shown that dilution of the initial solutions of polyelectrolytes 1:10 contributes to the detection of smaller nanoparticles and an increase in the absolute value of the negative ζ-potential as a factor of ND stability. A study of the EHS effect on the SARS-CoV-2 virus infectious titer in the Vero E6 cell showed the effective against virus both in the virucidal scheme (the SI is 11.90–22.43) and treatment/prevention scheme (the SI is 34.85–57.33). We assume that polyelectrolyte ND prevent the binding of the coronavirus spike glycoprotein to the receptor. Taking into account the results obtained, we expect that the developed approach can become unified for the standardization of the ND natural polyelectrolytes complex, which has great prospects for use in pharmacy and medicine as a drug with antiviral activity.

Removal of Zn(II) and Ni(II) heavy metal ions by new alginic acid-ester derivatives materials

The present work concerns the preparation of new materials based on alginic acid (AA) and diols in a facile and efficient process by improving the adsorption properties of Zn(II) and Ni(II) metal ions on the modified AA. The materials were analysed by zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), in addition to the Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after the adsorption behaviour was conducted. The results show that the esterification of AA with diols of different lengths significantly improves its adsorption efficiency of Zn(II) and Ni(II) with Q_max up to 200 mg/g and 185.185 mg/g respectively. Equilibrium and kinetic studies showed that the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models fit the experimental data well, and followed a pseudo-first order kinetic model and the particle diffusion model with correlation coefficients R² ≈ 1.

Acceleration of the bio-reduction of methyl orange by a magnetic and extracellular polymeric substance nanocomposite

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) plays an important role in bio-reduction of environmental pollutants. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), a kind of biogenic macromolecule, contain functional groups responsible for acceleration of EET. In this study, azo dye-methyl orange (MO) was chosen as a model pollutant, and a Fe₃O₄ and EPS nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@EPS) was prepared to evaluate its promotion on the bio-reduction of MO. The flower-like core-shell configuration of Fe₃O₄@EPS with a 12 nm of light layer of EPS was confirmed by TEM. The redox ability of EPS was well reserved on Fe₃O₄@EPS by FTIR and electrochemical test. The application of Fe₃O₄@EPS on sustained acceleration of MO decolorization were confirmed by batch experiments and anaerobic sequenced batch reactors. Due to biocompatibility of the biogenic shell, the as-prepared Fe₃O₄@EPS exhibited low toxic to microorganisms by the Live/dead cell test. Moreover, negligible leaching of EPS under high concentration of various anions and less than 10% of EPS was released under extreme acidic and basic pH condition. The results of study provided a new preparation method of biological intimate and environmentally friendly redox mediators and suggested a feasible way for its use on bio-reduction of pollutants.

Rapid Separation and Efficient Removal of Cd Based on Enhancing Surface Precipitation by Carbonate-Modified Biochar

The high buoyancy of biochar makes its application difficult in Cd removal. In this paper, the content of minerals was increased by modifying carbonate on the biochar surface using the vacuum impregnation method. Enhancing surface precipitation between minerals and Cd introduced a correspondingly great number of Cd precipitates on the biochar surface, leading to the rapid precipitation and separation of buoyant biochar. The physical and chemical properties of carbonate-modified biochar and the adsorption mechanism of Cd were comprehensively studied by jar tests, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the adsorption of Cd by carbonate-modified biochar was controlled by multiple mechanisms, including surface precipitation, surface complexation, and Cd-π interaction. Surface precipitation dominated the removal of Cd. The contributions of Cd removal mechanisms indicated that the contribution proportions of minerals increased from 89.73 to 97.9% when the pyrolysis temperature increased from 300 to 600 °C, while the contribution proportions of Cd-π binding decreased from 9.99 to 2.08%. Meanwhile, oxygen functional groups have only a marginal effect on Cd adsorption. Besides, the results revealed that the higher surface hydrophobicity and the lower polarity were conducive to biochar separation from water. The Cd removal method can provide efficient adsorption and rapid separation, making it possible to use biochar in water treatment.

Metagenomic analysis revealed the microbiota and metabolic function during co-composting of food waste and residual sludge for nitrogen and phosphorus transformation

This paper used bagasse as a composting additive and bulking agent in order to investigate the aerobic composting process of food waste and residual sludge. Accordingly, the variations of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, microbiota and metabolic function during the composting process were systematically explored. Three piles with residual sludge, food waste and bagasse mass ratios of 1:1:1, 2:1:1 and 4:1:1 were set. The ammonia nitrogen content in the three compost piles were 3.18 mg/g, 4.68 mg/g and 5.84 mg/g at the end of composting. The final available phosphorus content of the three piles were 3.42 mg/g, 6.70 mg/g and 11.21 mg/g, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that absorption peaks attributed to amines, amino acids and amides appeared in the 1:1:1 pile. Metagenomic analysis of the glycolysis and ammonia transformation pathways showed that the total relative abundance of key enzyme genes for the conversion of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate in the three plies were 0.326%, 0.213% and 0.248%, respectively. The total relative abundance of 2 glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH2), glud1-2 and E1,4,1,4 dehydrogenases in the three piles was 0.125%, 0.151% and 0.160%, respectively, as the main enzymes for the mutual conversion of ammonia and glutamate.

Investigation of mercury(II) and copper(II) sorption in single and binary systems by alginate/polyethylenimine membranes

This study investigates Hg(II) and Cu(II) sorption in single and binary systems by alginate/polyethylenimine membranes. Batch experiments are conducted to assess the metal sorption performance. FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses are used to identify metal binding mechanism. The sorption kinetics are better fitted by the pseudo-second-order-equation compared to the pseudo-first-order-equation. Three isotherms are compared for fitting the sorption in mono-component solutions and the Sips model gives the best simulation of experimental data. The competitive-Sips model fits well sorption data in Hg-Cu binary solutions and finds that the Cu uptake is drastically reduced by Hg competition. Copper(II) uptake remains negligible at low pH whereas it increases with pH up to 6 because of material deprotonation. Mercury(II) sorption behaves differently, it slightly changes from pH 1 (q_eq: 0.76 mmol g^-1) to pH 6 (q_eq: 0.84 mmol g^-1) due to chloro-anion formation. Therefore, playing with the pH allows separating Hg(II) from Cu(II).

Adsorption behavior of Cd (II) on TEMPO-oxidized cellulose in inorganic/ organic complex systems

2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was oxidized to produce TEMPO-oxidized cellulose (TOCS) with a nanofunctionalized surface and abundant carboxyl groups. In a batch experiment, three pH values (2, 5 and 7), three modes (single, binary and multiple systems), and systems with inorganic and organic materials were applied to explore the adsorption of coexisting metals and antibiotics on TOCS. The adsorption capacity of TOCS was substantially influenced by these factors, and the adsorption behaviors were also different in these systems. In general, the coordination behaviors and electrostatic attraction between Cd(II) and carboxyl groups were identified as the mechanism employed by the single system, while hydrophobic interactions, π interactions, hydrogen bonding and pore filling contributed to the adsorption of sulfonamides (SAs) on TOCS in the binary system. The bridging effect was determined to be the key mechanism; i.e., most Cd(II) and SAs in the form of [SA-Cd] complexes interacted with carboxyl groups, especially in the presence of high concentrations of Cd(II) and SAs. These adsorption behaviors were determined quantitatively by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, TOCS showed excellent adsorption capacity in a more complex interference system, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 5.83 mg/g.

Adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by magnetic activated carbon and its mechanism

Magnetized activated carbons (MAC) were prepared by activating rape straw powder, and pyrolyzing at different temperatures, then magnetizing activated carbon by hydrothermal method. MAC-300 had the largest adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (253.2 mg/g) and Cd(II) (73.3 mg/g). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics could conform to the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively, indicating that the adsorptive behavior of the adsorbent mainly depends on the non-uniform active points on the surface of the material. Meanwhile, the thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by MAC-300 was a spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The adsorption capacity of MAC-300 could be improved by properly increasing the pH of the original solution. There was competitive adsorption when high-valent ions were present in solution. In combination with various characterizations and comparison tests of samples after adsorption, the adsorption mechanisms include surface electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and co-precipitation. The results indicated that the MAC material was a potential material to remove heavy metal ions from the aqueous solution.

Iron-crosslinked alginate derived Fe/C composites for atrazine removal from water

Fe/C composite is emerging as a promising nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) based material for wastewater treatment to counteract the limitations of nZVI, while its preparation method, structure-activity relationship, and working mechanisms and conditions still need to be studied. In this study, Fe/C composites derived from iron-crosslinked alginate was successfully achieved via high temperature pyrolysis. Ferric ions were only transformed into Fe₃O₄/γ-Fe₂O₃ at low pyrolysis temperature (≤500 °C), whereas Fe⁰/Fe₃C became the primary Fe species with the formation of graphitic carbon at elevated pyrolysis temperature (≥700 °C). Fe/C composites from higher pyrolysis temperature presented better performance in atrazine (ATZ) removal, and the optimal pyrolysis temperature was 800 °C (Fe/C-800). Batch experiments showed that the removal kinetics of ATZ (10 mg L^-1) by Fe/C-800 (0.2 g L^-1) followed pseudo-second-order model, and 24-h ATZ removal efficiency maintained at 93.5 ± 1.0% within pH 3-9. The adsorption by the graphitic carbon phase of Fe/C-800 was the principal contributor to the pH-independent superior performance in ATZ removal, and the Langmuir model fitted adsorption capacity was 64.8 mg g^-1 at pH 6. Although the carbon-phase adsorbed ATZ was basically unavailable for degradation, Fe⁰/Fe₃C-mediated ATZ degradation contributed to the great reactivity of Fe/C-800 at pH 3. Fe⁰/Fe₃C in Fe/C-800 was more efficient for ATZ degradation than commercial nZVI, and oxidative dealkylation by Fe⁰/Fe₃C mediated Fenton reaction was the predominant ATZ degradation pathway rather than reductive dechlorination. Moreover, the produced ATZ degradation intermediates could be further adsorbed by Fe/C-800, mitigating potential secondary pollution. Thus, iron-crosslinked alginate derived Fe/C composites can be an excellent alternative for nZVI in organics-polluted water treatment with great reactivity and wide pH applicability.

Facile preparation of sulfonated biochar for highly efficient removal of toxic Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater

Biochar is deemed as the ideal material for the effective removal of heavy metals in wastewater treatment. Herein, we developed a facile one-step solvothermal method for the preparation of sulfonated biochar (SBC) from Axonopus compressus under a low-temperature condition. FTIR and XPS analysis demonstrate that plenty of -OH, -COOH and -SO₃H moieties are generated on the surface of SBC during the sulfonation process. Due to high electronegativity and strong complexation of these moieties, SBC can rapidly adsorb Pb(II) and Cd(II) with capacities of 191.07 and 85.76 mg/g respectively within 5 min. SBC can be reused for 5 cycles with a negligible loss of adsorption capacity. In addition, different biomass-based biochars are prepared under the identical experimental conditions, and they are successfully applied in the treatments of Pb(II) and Cd(II). The satisfying results indicate that one-step low-temperature sulfonation could be a universal method, and various types of biomass waste could be the abundant, effective, economical material source for the treatment of environmental heavy metal pollution in future.

Effect of excess sludge and food waste feeding ratio on the nutrient fractions, and bacterial and fungal community during aerobic co-composting

The effect of excess sludge and food waste feeding ratio on the co-composting process was explored using 5% bagasse biochar as an additive and conditioner. Results showed that when the mass ratio was 1:1, nitrogen fixation ability was the strongest and ammonia nitrogen increment in the pile reached 2.31 mg/g. The increase in excess sludge content/food waste ratio during composting was conducive to the accumulation of H₂O-P, BD-P, HCl-P, NaOH-P and NaOH₈₅-P. When the ratio of excess sludge to food waste mass was 1:1, the relative abundance of Firmicutes was the largest in the compost, which corresponded to 72.77% at the phylum level. Food waste mass was more beneficial to the growth and reproduction of microorganisms and to the metabolic activities related to membrane transport. Considering the fungal content, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were maximum, with relative abundance of 69.53% and 20.91%, respectively, at the mass ratio of 1:1.

Conversion of tannery solid waste to an adsorbent for high-efficiency dye removal from tannery wastewater: A road to circular utilization

The high value-added use of tannery solid waste and elimination of tannery liquid waste in the leather-making industry have attracted widespread attention. In this study, a MgO-doped biochar (MgO/BC) adsorbent was successfully prepared by utilizing tannery solid waste (i.e., non-tanned hide wastes) as the biomass material for dye removal from tannery wastewater. Characterization results indicated that MgO was uniformly embedded into the porous BC structure. The adsorption capacity of acid orange II by MgO/BC reached up to 448.4 mg g^-1, which drastically exceeded the pure BC and other reported adsorbents. The adsorption behavior of acid orange II by MgO/BC matched nicely with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This satisfactory adsorption capacity of MgO/BC for acid orange II was mainly due to the large specific surface area and the enhanced electrostatic interaction. According to the BET, zeta potential and XPS analysis, the possible mechanism towards acid orange II removal was attributed to the pore filling, surface complexation, electrostatic attraction and π-π interaction. In addition, MgO/BC showed the efficient removal towards anionic dyes from actual tannery wastewater. This work could provide guidance for the value-added utilization of tannery solid waste and a practical way to remove dyes from tannery wastewater.

Physical Properties, Chemical Analysis, and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Response of New Polylactide/Alginate/Copper Composite Materials

In recent years, due to an expansion of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, there has been growing interest in biodegradable and antibacterial polymers that can be used in selected biomedical applications. The present work describes the synthesis of antimicrobial polylactide-copper alginate (PLA-ALG-Cu2+) composite fibers and their characterization. The composites were prepared by immersing PLA fibers in aqueous solution of sodium alginate, followed by ionic cross-linking of alginate chains within the polylactide fibers with Cu(II) ions to yield PLA-ALG-Cu2+ composite fibers. The composites, so prepared, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV/VIS transmittance and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy ATR-FTIR, and by determination of their specific surface area (SSA), total/average pore volumes (through application of the 5-point Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET)), and ability to block UV radiation (determination of the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of samples). The composites were also subjected to in vitro antimicrobial activity evaluation tests against colonies of Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria and antifungal susceptibility tests against Aspergillus niger and Chaetomium globosum fungal mold species. All the results obtained in this work showed that the obtained composites were promising materials to be used as an antimicrobial wound dressing.
