Self-standing membranes for separation: Achievements and opportunities

Supported membranes and mixed matrix membranes have a limitation of harming the mass transfer due to the incompatibility between the support layer or the matrix and the active components of the membrane. Self-standing membranes, which could structurally abandon the support layer, altogether avoid the adverse effect, thus greatly facilitating the transmembrane mass transfer process. However, the abandonment of the support layer also reduces the membrane's mechanical properties and formability. In this review, our emphasis will be on self-standing membranes within the realm of materials and separation engineering. We will explore the materials employed in the fabrication of self-standing membranes, highlighting their ability to simultaneously enhance membrane performance and promote self-standing characteristics. Additionally, we will delve into the diverse techniques utilized for crafting self-standing membranes, encompassing interfacial polymerization, filtration, solvent casting, Langmuir-Blodgett & layer-by-layer assembly, electrospinning, compression, etc. Throughout the discussion, the merits and drawbacks associated with each of these preparation methods were elucidated. We also provide a brief overview of the applications of self-standing membranes, including water purification, gas separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, electrochemistry, and membrane reactor, as well as a brief description of the general strategies for performance enhancement of self-standing membranes. Finally, the current status of self-standing membranes and the challenges they may encounter were discussed.

Ultrafast mechanosynthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with UV and NIR photoswitching of photochromic/photothermal behavior

We present a facile and ultrafast mechanosynthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks |C10N2H10‖HC2O4|2 with UV and NIR bidirectional photoswitching of photochromic/photothermal behavior. The reaction time is reduced to mere seconds, and the method is both high-yield and scalable.

Supramolecular Assembly of Fused Macrocycle-Cage Molecules for Fast Lithium-Ion Transport

We report a new supramolecular porous crystal assembled from fused macrocycle-cage molecules. The molecule comprises a prismatic cage with three macrocycles radially attached. The molecules form a nanoporous crystal with one-dimensional (1D) nanochannels. The supramolecular porous crystal can take up lithium-ion electrolytes and achieve an ionic conductivity of up to 8.3 × 10-4 S/cm. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that efficient Li-ion electrolyte uptake, the presence of 1D nanochannels, and weak interactions between lithium ions and the crystal enable fast lithium-ion transport. Our findings demonstrate the potential of fused macrocycle-cage molecules as a new design motif for ion-conducting molecular crystals.

Modulating the Microenvironments of Robust Metal Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are outstanding candidates for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, most of reported HOFs suffer from poor stability and photocatalytic activity in the absence of Pt cocatalyst. Herein, a series of metal HOFs (Co2-HOF-X, X=COOMe, Br, tBu and OMe) have been rationally constructed based on dinuclear cobalt complexes, which exhibit exceptional stability in the presence of strong acid (12 M HCl) and strong base (5 M NaOH) for at least 10 days. More impressively, by varying the -X groups of the dinuclear cobalt complexes, the microenvironment of Co2-HOF-X can be modulated, giving rise to obviously different photocatalytic H2 production rates, following the -X group sequence of -COOMe>-Br>-tBu>-OMe. The optimized Co2-HOF-COOMe shows H2 generation rate up to 12.8 mmol g-1 h-1 in the absence of any additional noble-metal photosensitizers and cocatalysts, which is superior to most reported Pt-assisted photocatalytic systems. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the -X groups grafted on Co2-HOF-X possess different electron-withdrawing ability, thus regulating the electronic structures of Co catalytic centres and proton activation barrier for H2 production, and leading to the distinctly different photocatalytic activity.

Supramolecular Assembly Frameworks (SAFs): Shaping the Future of Functional Materials

Supramolecular assembly frameworks (SAFs) represent a new category of porous materials, utilizing non-covalent interactions, setting them apart from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This category includes but is not restricted to hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks. SAFs stand out for their outstanding porosity, crystallinity, and stability, alongside unique dissolution-recrystallization dynamics that enable significant structural and functional modifications. Crucially, their non-covalent assembly strategies allow for a balanced manipulation of porosity, symmetry, crystallinity, and dimensions, facilitating the creation of advanced crystalline porous materials unattainable through conventional covalent or coordination bond synthesis. Despite their considerable promise in overcoming several limitations inherent to MOFs and COFs, particularly in terms of solution-processability, SAFs have received relatively little attention in recent literature. This Minireview aims to shed light on standout SAFs, exploring their design principles, synthesis strategies, and characterization methods. It emphasizes their distinctive features and the broad spectrum of potential applications across various domains, aiming to catalyze further development and practical application within the scientific community.

Transition Behaviors of Isostructural Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks Composed of Naphthalene, Quinoxaline, and Pyrazinopyrazine Derivatives

A series of isostructural reticular frameworks with systematic differences on chemical structures allows us to disclose correlations between specific structural factors and properties, providing insights for designing novel porous materials. However, even slight differences in the molecular structure often lead to non-isostructural polymorphic frameworks particularly in the case of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) because the structures of HOFs are based on a subtle balance of reversible interactions. In this study, we found that three simple analogues of tetracarboxylic acids with naphthalene, quinoxaline, and pyrazinopyrazine cores (NT, QX, and PP, respectively) yielded isostructural solvated HOFs (NT-1, QX-1, and PP-1, respectively), where hydrogen-bonded sql-networked sheets were slip-stacked with closely similar manners. More importantly, these isostructural HOFs underwent structural transformations in different manners upon removal of the guest solvents. Comparison of the crystal structures of the HOFs before and after the transformation revealed that intermolecular interactions of the core significantly affected on rearrangements of hydrogen bonds in the transformation. The results suggest the potential to control the properties and functions of isostructural HOFs by elements in the core.

Strategy to Efficient Photodynamic Therapy for Antibacterium: Donor-Acceptor Structure in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

While the construction of a donor-acceptor (D-A) structure has gained great attention across various scientific disciplines, such structures are seldomly reported within the field of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). Herein, a D-A based HOF is synthesized, where the adjacent D-A pairs are connected by hydrogen bonds instead of the conventionally employed covalent bonds. This structural feature imparts material with a reduced energy gap between excited state and triplet state, thereby facilitating the intersystem crossing (ISC) and boosting the generation rate of single oxygen (quantum yield = 0.98). Consequently, the resulting material shows high performance for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT). The impact of D-A moiety is evident when comparing this finding to a parallel study conducted on an isoreticular HOF without a D-A structure. The study presented here provides in-depth insights into the photophysical properties of D-A pair in a hydrogen-bonded network, opening a new avenue to the design of innovative materials for efficient PDT.

Controlled crystallisation of porous crystals of luminescent platinum(II) complexes by electronic tuning of ancillary ligands

Porous molecular crystals (PMCs) have gained significant importance as next-generation functional porous materials. However, the selective crystallisation of the PMC phase remains a challenge. Herein, we have systematically controlled the stability of the luminescent PMC phase prepared using the luminescent Pt(II) complex [Pt(pbim)(N^O)] (pbim = 2-phenylbenzimidazolate, N^O = N-heteroaryl carboxylate) with Pt⋯Pt electronic interactions. The PMC phase formation varied significantly among the complexes depending on the heteroaryl group of the ancillary N^O ligand; the oxazolyl-bearing complex did not form a PMC phase, whereas the pyrazyl- and 5-fluoropyridyl-bearing complexes spontaneously formed a porous structure. This difference was rationalised by the π-stacking capability of the heteroaryl group of the ancillary ligand. Furthermore, owing to the presence of the one-dimensional Pt⋯Pt chains in this PMC phase, the photophysical properties of PMCs resulting from the Pt⋯Pt interactions were also significantly changed by the ancillary ligands.

Self-Healing B ← N-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Exclusive Recognition and Separation of Toluene from Methyl-Cyclohexane

The effective separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons remains a notable challenge in the petrochemical industry. Herein, we report a self-healing three-dimensional B ← N-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), BN-HOF-1, constructed from discrete B ← N inclusive dimers through weak C-H···F and C-H···N hydrogen-bonding interactions. To make use of the specific recognition of the B ← N inclusive dimers for the toluene molecules and the reversible ad/desorption nature of this novel HOF, BN-HOF-1 can exclusively recognize and separate toluene from the mixtures of toluene-methylcyclohexane, thus generating 99.6% pure toluene from its mixtures after gentle heating, the recorded value among any reported materials for toluene purification. After the toluene molecules were released from the framework, it becomes the condensed BN-HOF-1a, which can be further reused for the highly selective recognition and purification of toluene from its binary mixtures, through the reversible structural recovery back to BN-HOF-1. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular modeling studies reveal that the high specific toluene recognition is attributed to the complementary electrostatic potential between the host B ← N inclusive dimers and the guest toluene, while the self-healing and recovery nature of this HOF is attributed to weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Flexible hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs): opportunities and challenges

Flexible behavior is one of the most fascinating features of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), which represent an emerging class of porous materials that are self-assembled via H-bonding between organic building units. Due to their unique flexibility, HOFs can undergo structural changes or transformations in response to various stimuli (physical or chemical). Taking advantage of this unique structural feature, flexible HOFs show potential in multifunctional applications such as gas storage/separation, molecular recognition, sensing, proton conductivity, biomedicine, etc. While some other flexible porous materials have been extensively studied, the dynamic behavior of HOFs remains relatively less explored. This perspective highlights the inherent flexible properties of HOFs, discusses their different flexible behaviors, including pore size/shape changes, interpenetration/stacking manner, H-bond breaking/reconstruction, and local dynamic behavior, and highlights their potential applications. We believe that this perspective will not only contribute to HOF chemistry and materials science, but will also facilitate the ongoing extensive research on dynamic porous materials.

Hydrogen-Bonded Mesoporous Frameworks with Tunable Pore Sizes and Architectures from Nanocluster Assembly Units

Construction of mesoporous frameworks by noncovalent bonding still remains a great challenge. Here, we report a micelle-directed nanocluster modular self-assembly approach to synthesize a novel type of two-dimensional (2-D) hydrogen-bonded mesoporous frameworks (HMFs) for the first time based on nanoscale cluster units (1.0-3.0 nm in size). In this 2-D structure, a mesoporous cluster plate with ∼100 nm in thickness and several micrometers in size can be stably formed into uniform hexagonal arrays. Meanwhile, such a porous plate consists of several (3-4) dozens of layers of ultrathin mesoporous cluster nanosheets. The size of the mesopores can be precisely controlled from 11.6 to 18.5 nm by utilizing the amphiphilic diblock copolymer micelles with tunable block lengths. Additionally, the pore configuration of the HMFs can be changed from spherical to cylindrical by manipulating the concentration of the micelles. As a general approach, various new HMFs have been achieved successfully via a modular self-assembly of nanoclusters with switchable configurations (nanoring, Keggin-type, and cubane-like) and components (titanium-oxo, polyoxometalate, and organometallic clusters). As a demonstration, the titanium-oxo cluster-based HMFs show efficient photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution (3.6 mmol g-1h-1), with a conversion rate about 2 times higher than that of the unassembled titanium-oxo clusters (1.5 mmol g-1h-1). This demonstrates that HMFs exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with unassembled titanium-oxo clusters units.

Supramolecular Entanglement in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enables Flexible-Robust Porosity for Highly Efficient Purification of Natural Gas

The development of porous materials with flexible-robust characteristics shows some unique advantages to target high performance for gas separation, but remains a daunting challenge to achieve so far. Herein, we report a carboxyl-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (ZJU-HOF-8a) with flexible-robust porosity for efficient purification of natural gas. ZJU-HOF-8a features a four-fold interpenetrated structure with dia topology, wherein abundant supramolecular entanglements are formed between the adjacent subnetworks through weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This structural configuration could not only stabilize the whole framework to establish the permanent porosity, but also enable the framework to show some flexibility due to its weak intermolecular interactions (so-called flexible-robust framework). The flexible-robust porosity of ZJU-HOF-8a was exclusively confirmed by gas sorption isotherms and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, showing that the flexible pore pockets can be opened by C3H8 and n-C4H10 molecules rather by C2H6 and CH4. This leads to notably higher C3H8 and n-C4H10 uptakes with enhanced selectivities than C2H6 over CH4 under ambient conditions, affording one of the highest n-C4H10/CH4 selectivities. The gas-loaded single-crystal structures coupled with theoretical simulations reveal that the loading of n-C4H10 can induce an obvious framework expansion along with pore pocket opening to improve n-C4H10 uptake and selectivity, while not for C2H6 adsorption. This work suggests an effective strategy of designing flexible-robust HOFs for improving gas separation properties.

Photo-Responsive Hydrogen-Bonded Molecular Networks Capable of Retaining Crystalline Periodicity after Isomerization

The molecular conformation, crystalline morphology, and properties of photochromic organic crystals can be controlled through photoirradiation, making them promising candidates for functional organic materials. However, photochromic porous molecular crystals with a networked framework structure are rare due to the difficulty in maintaining space that allows for photo-induced molecular motion in the crystalline state. This study describes a photo-responsive single crystal based on hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) network of dihydrodimethylbenzo[e]pyrene derivative 4BDHP. A crystal composed of H-bonded undulate layers, 4BDHP-2, underwent photo-isomerization in the crystalline state due to loose stacking of the layers. Particularly, enantio-pure crystal (S,S)-4BDHP-2 allowed to reveal the structure of the photoisomerized crystal, in which the closed form (4BDHP) and open form (4CPD) were arranged alternately with keeping crystalline periodicity, although side reactions were also implied. The present proof-of-concept system of a photochromic framework that retains crystalline periodicity after photo-isomerization may provide new light-driven porous functional materials.

Structural Design and Energy and Environmental Applications of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: A Systematic Review

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability. More importantly, due to the significant potential of the latest HOF-related research for addressing energy and environmental issues, this work discusses the latest advances in the methods of energy storage and conversion, energy substance generation and isolation, environmental detection and isolation, degradation and transformation, and biological applications. Furthermore, a discussion of the coupling orientation of HOF in the cross-cutting fields of energy and environment is presented for the first time. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for the development of HOFs to advance their energy and environmental applications are discussed.

Network topology diversification of porous organic salts

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous organic materials constructed via hydrogen bonds. HOFs have solubility in specific high-polar organic solvents. Therefore, HOFs can be returned to their components and can be reconstructed, which indicates their high recyclability. Network topologies, which are the frameworks of porous structures, control the pore sizes and shapes of HOFs. Therefore, they strongly affect the functions of porous materials. However, hydrogen bonds are usually weak interactions, and the design of the intended network topology in HOFs from their components has been challenging. Porous organic salts (POSs) are an important class of HOFs, are hierarchically constructed via strong charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between sulfonic acids and amines, and therefore are expected to have high designability of the porous structure. However, the network topology of POSs has been limited to only dia-topology. Here, we combined tetrasulfonic acid with the adamantane core (4,4',4'',4'''-(adamantane-1,3,5,7-tetrayl)tetrabenzenesulfonic acid; AdPS) and triphenylmethylamines with modified substituents in para-positions of benzene rings (TPMA-X, X = F, methyl (Me), Cl, Br, I). We changed the steric hindrance between the adamantane and substituents (X) in TPMA-X and obtained not only the common dia-topology for POSs but also rare sod-topology, and lon- and uni-topologies that are formed for the first time in HOFs. Changing template molecules under preparation helped in successfully isolating the porous structures of AdPS/TPMA-Me with dia-, lon-, and sod-topologies which exhibited different gas adsorption properties. Therefore, for the first time, we demonstrated that the steric design of HOF components facilitated the formation, diversification, and control of the network topologies and functions of HOFs.

Protein-Integrated Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Chemistry and Biomedical Applications

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous nanomaterials that offer exceptional biocompatibility and versatility for integrating proteins for biomedical applications. This minireview concisely discusses recent advancements in the chemistry and functionality of protein-HOF interfaces. It particularly focuses on strategic methodologies, such as the careful selection of building blocks and the genetic engineering of proteins, to facilitate protein-HOF interactions. We examine the role of enzyme encapsulation within HOFs, highlighting its capability to preserve enzyme function, a crucial aspect for applications in biosensing and disease diagnosis. Moreover, we discuss the emerging utility of nanoscale HOFs for intracellular protein delivery, illustrating their applicability as nanoreactors for intracellular catalysis and neuroprotective biorthogonal catalysis within cellular compartments. We highlight the significant advancement of designing biodegradable HOFs tailored for cytosolic protein delivery, underscoring their promising application in targeted cancer therapies. Finally, we provide a perspective viewpoint on the design of biocompatible protein-HOF assemblies, underlining their promising prospects in drug delivery, disease diagnosis, and broader biomedical applications.

Vitrification-enabled enhancement of proton conductivity in hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are versatile materials with potential applications in proton conduction. Traditional approaches involve incorporating humidity control to address grain boundary challenges for proton conduction. This study finds vitrification as an alternative strategy to eliminate grain boundary effect in HOFs by rapidly melt quenching the kinetically stable HOF-SXU-8 to glassy state HOF-g. Notably, a remarkable enhancement in proton conductivity without humidity was achieved after vitrification, from 1.31 × 10-7 S cm-1 to 5.62× 10-2 S cm-1 at 100 °C. Long term stability test showed negligible performance degradation, and even at 30 °C, the proton conductivity remained at high level of 1.2 × 10-2 S cm-1. Molecule dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray total scattering experiments reveal the HOF-g system is consisted of three kinds of clusters, i.e., 1,5-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid (1,5-NSA) anion clusters, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) molecule clusters, and H+-H2O clusters. In which, the H+ plays an important role to bridge these clusters and the high conductivity is mainly related to the H+ on H3O+. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing HOFs, enabling efficient proton conduction, and advancing energy conversion and storage devices.

An Ultra-stable Supramolecular Framework Based on Consecutive Side-by-side Hydrogen Bonds for One-step C2H4/C2H6 Separation

The one-step efficient separation of high-purity C2H4 from C2H4/C2H6 mixtures by hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) faces two problems: lack of strategies for constructing stable pores in HOFs and how to obtain high C2H6 selectivity. Herein, we have developed a microporous Mortise-Tenon-type HOF (MTHOF-1, MT is short for Mortise-Tenon structure) with a new self-assembly mode for C2H4/C2H6 separation. Unlike previous HOFs which usually possess discrete head-to-head hydrogen bonds, MTHOF-1 is assembled by unique consecutive side-by-side hydrogen bonds, which result in mortise-and-tenon pores decorated with orderly arranged amide groups and benzene rings. As expected, MTHOF-1 exhibits excellent stability under various conditions and shows clear separation trends for C2H6/C2H4. The IAST selectivity is as high as 2.15 at 298 K. More importantly, dynamic breakthrough experiments have demonstrated that MTHOF-1 can effectively separate the C2H6/C2H4 feed gas to obtain polymer-grade C2H4 in one step even under high-humidity conditions.

Temperature-Dependent Separation of CO2 from Light Hydrocarbons in a Porous Self-Assembly of Vertexes Sharing Octahedra

Design of flexible porous materials where the diffusion of guest molecules is regulated by the dynamics of contracted pore aperture is challenging. Here, a flexible porous self-assembly consisting of 1D channels with dynamic bottleneck gates is reported. The dynamic pendant naphthimidazolylmethyl moieties at the channel necks provide kinetic gate function, that enables unusual adsorption for light hydrocarbons. The adsorption for CO2 is mainly dominated by thermodynamics with the uptakes decreasing with increasing temperature, whereas the adsorptions for larger hydrocarbons are controlled by both thermodynamics and kinetics resulting in an uptake maximum at a temperature threshold. Such an unusual adsorption enables temperature-dependent separation of CO2 from the corresponding hydrocarbons.

Anionic Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks Showing Tautomerism and Colorful Luminescence for the Ultrasensitive Detection of Acetone

Tautomers coexisting in an equilibrium system have significant potential for regulating luminescent properties because of their structural differences. However, separating and stabilizing tautomers at room temperature is a considerable challenge. In this study, it is found that hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) composed of Br- anions can effectively separate and stabilize two proton-transfer tautomers of triarylformamidinium bromide: namely, the nitrogen cation (BA-N) and carbon cation (BA-C). The BA-N crystal consisting of a dense anionic HOF and parallelly aligned organic cations exhibits green thermally activated delayed fluorescence and red room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). The BA-C crystal contains acetone molecules that induce an antiparallel arrangement of the organic cations to form a loose HOF, producing blue prompt fluorescence and green RTP. Interestingly, switching of the HOFs between BA-N and BA-C can be achieved through the uptake and release of acetone, thereby dynamically adjusting multiple luminescent properties. Consequently, the HOF crystals can be used for the highly sensitive and specific sensing of acetone with a detection limit of 66.74 ppm. This study not only stabilizes tautomeric luminescent materials at room temperature, but also provides a new method for constructing smart HOFs with a sensitive response to a stimulus.

Charge-Assisted Ionic Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Designable and Stabilized Multifunctional Materials

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of crystalline framework materials assembled by hydrogen bonds. HOFs have the advantages of high crystallinity, mild reaction conditions, good solution processability, and reproducibility. Coupled with the reversibility and flexibility of hydrogen bonds, HOFs can be assembled into a wide diversity of crystalline structures. Since the bonding energy of hydrogen bonds is lower than that of ligand and covalent bonds, the framework of HOFs is prone to collapse after desolventisation and the stability is not high, which limits the development and application of HOFs. In recent years, numerous stable and functional HOFs have been developed by π-π stacking, highly interpenetrated networks, charge-assisted, ligand-bond-assisted, molecular weaving, and covalent cross-linking. Charge-assisted ionic HOFs introduce electrostatic attraction into HOFs to improve stability while enriching structural diversity and functionality. In this paper, we review the development, the principles of rational design and assembly of charge-assisted ionic HOFs, and introduces the different building block construction modes of charge-assisted ionic HOFs. Highlight the applications of charge-assisted ionic HOFs in gas adsorption and separation, proton conduction, biological applications, etc., and prospects for the diverse design of charge-assisted ionic HOFs structures and multifunctional applications.

Reticular synthesis of 8-connected carboxyl hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for white-light-emission

The rational design and construction of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are crucial for enabling their practical applications, but controlling their structure and preparation as intended remains challenging. Inspired by reticular chemistry, two novel blue-emitting NKM-HOF-1 and NKM-HOF-2 were successfully constructed based on two judiciously designed peripherally extended pentiptycene carboxylic acids, namely H8PEP-OBu and H8PEP-OMe, respectively. The large pores within these two HOFs can adsorb fluorescent molecules such as diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and 9-anthraldehyde (AnC) to form HOFs ⊃ DPP/AnC composites, subsequently used in the fabrication of white-light-emitting devices (WLEDs). Specifically, two WLEDs were assembled by coating NKM-HOF-1 ⊃ DPP-0.13/AnC-3.5 and NKM-HOF-2 ⊃ DPP-0.12/AnC-3 on a 330 nm ultraviolet LED bulb, respectively. The corresponding CIE coordinates were (0.29, 0.33) and (0.32, 0.34), along with corresponding color temperatures of 7815 K and 6073 K. This work effectively demonstrates the feasibility of employing reticular chemistry strategies to predict and design HOFs with specific topologies for targeted applications.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for membrane separation

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous materials that are formed through the interconnection of organic or metal-organic building units via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The remarkable flexibility and reversibility of hydrogen bonds, coupled with the customizable nature of organic units, endow HOFs with mild synthesis conditions, high crystallinity, solvent processability, and facile self-healing and regeneration properties. Consequently, these features have garnered significant attention across various fields, particularly in the realm of membrane separation. Herein, we present an overview of the recent advances in HOF-based membranes, including their advanced fabrication strategies and fascinating applications in membrane separation. To attain the desired HOF-based membranes, careful consideration is dedicated to crucial factors such as pore size, stability, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and surface charge of the HOFs. Additionally, diverse preparation methods for HOF-based membranes, including blending, in situ growth, solution-processing, and electrophoretic deposition, have been analyzed. Furthermore, applications of HOF-based membranes in gas separation, water treatment, fuel cells, and other emerging application areas are presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects of HOF-based membranes are critically pointed out.

Smart-Responsive HOF Heterostructures with Multiple Spatial-Resolved Emission Modes toward Photonic Security Platform

Luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with the unique dynamics and versatile functional sites hold great potential application in information security, yet most of responsive HOFs focus on the single-component framework with restrained emission control, limiting further applications in advanced confidential information protection. Herein, the first smart-responsive HOF heterostructure with multiple spatial-resolved emission modes for covert photonic security platform is reported. The HOF heterostructures are prepared by integrating different HOFs into a single microwire based on a hydrogen-bond-assisted epitaxial growth method. The distinct responsive behaviors of HOFs permit the heterostructure to simultaneously display the thermochromism via the framework transformation and the acidichromism via the protonation effect, thus generating multiple emission modes. The dual stimuli-controlled spatial-resolved emission modes constitute the fingerprint of a heterostructure, and enable the establishment of the smart-responsive photonic barcode with multiple convert states, which further demonstrate the dynamic coding capability and enhanced security in anticounterfeiting label applications. These results offer a promising route to design function-oriented smart responsive HOF microdevices toward advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Multiple hydrogen bonding driven supramolecular architectures and their biomedical applications

Supramolecular chemistry combines the strength of molecular assembly via various molecular interactions. Hydrogen bonding facilitated self-assembly with the advantages of directionality, specificity, reversibility, and strength is a promising approach for constructing advanced supramolecules. There are still some challenges in hydrogen bonding based supramolecular polymers, such as complexity originating from tautomerism of the molecular building modules, the assembly process, and structure versatility of building blocks. In this review, examples are selected to give insights into multiple hydrogen bonding driven emerging supramolecular architectures. We focus on chiral supramolecular assemblies, multiple hydrogen bonding modules as stimuli responsive sources, interpenetrating polymer networks, multiple hydrogen bonding assisted organic frameworks, supramolecular adhesives, energy dissipators, and quantitative analysis of nano-adhesion. The applications in biomedical materials are focused with detailed examples including drug design evolution for myotonic dystrophy, molecular assembly for advanced drug delivery, an indicator displacement strategy for DNA detection, tissue engineering, and self-assembly complexes as gene delivery vectors for gene transfection. In addition, insights into the current challenges and future perspectives of this field to propel the development of multiple hydrogen bonding facilitated supramolecular materials are proposed.

Crystalline porous organic salts

Crystalline porous organic salts (CPOSs), formed by the self-assembly of organic acids and organic bases through ionic bonding, possess definite structures and permanent porosity and have rapidly emerged as an important class of porous organic materials in recent years. By rationally designing and controlling tectons, acidity/basicity (pKa), and topology, stable CPOSs with permanent porosity can be efficiently constructed. The characteristics of ionic bonds, charge-separated highly polar nano-confined channels, and permanent porosity endow CPOSs with unique physicochemical properties, offering extensive research opportunities for exploring their functionalities and application scenarios. In this review, we systematically summarize the latest progress in CPOS research, describe the synthetic strategies for synthesizing CPOSs, delineate their structural characteristics, and highlight the differences between CPOSs and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). Furthermore, we provide an overview of the potential applications of CPOSs in areas such as negative linear compression (NLC), proton conduction, rapid transport of CO2, selective and rapid transport of K+ ions, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH), gas sorption, molecular rotors, fluorescence modulation, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and catalysis. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of CPOSs are presented.

Multistate structures in a hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework with diverse resistive switching behaviors

The inherent structural flexibility and reversibility of non-covalent organic frameworks have enabled them to exhibit switchable multistate structures under external stimuli, providing great potential in the field of resistive switching (RS), but not well explored yet. Herein, we report the 0D+1D hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework (HOF-FJU-52), exhibiting diverse and reversible RS behaviors with the high performance. Triggered by the external stimulus of electrical field E at room temperature, HOF-FJU-52 has excellent resistive random-access memory (RRAM) behaviors, comparable to the state-of-the-art materials. When cooling down below 200 K, it was transferred to write-once-read-many-times memory (WORM) behaviors. The two memory behaviors exhibit reversibility on a single crystal device through the temperature changes. The RS mechanism of this non-covalent organic framework has been deciphered at the atomic level by the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, demonstrating that the structural dual-flexibility both in the asymmetric hydrogen bonded dimers within the 0D loops and in the infinite π-π stacking column between the loops and chains contribute to reversible structure transformations between multi-states and thus to its dual RS behaviors.

A Microporous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Based on Hydrogen-Bonding Tetramers for Efficient Xe/Kr Separation

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have been emerging as a new type of very promising microporous materials for gas separation and purification, but few HOFs structures constructed through hydrogen-bonding tetramers have been explored in this field. Herein, we report the first microporous HOF (termed as HOF-FJU-46) afforded by hydrogen-bonding tetramers with 4-fold interpenetrated diamond networks, which shows excellent chemical and thermal stability. What's more, activated HOF-FJU-46 exhibits the highest xenon (Xe) uptake of 2.51 mmol g-1 and xenon/krypton (Kr) selectivity of 19.9 at the ambient condition among the reported HOFs up to date. Dynamic breakthrough tests confirmed the excellent Xe/Kr separation of HOF-FJU-46a, showing high Kr productivity (110 mL g-1 ) and Xe uptake (1.29 mmol g-1 ), as well as good recyclability. The single crystal X-ray diffraction and the molecular simulations revealed that the abundant accessible aromatic and pyrazole rings in the pore channels of HOF-FJU-46a can provide the multiple strong C-H⋅⋅⋅Xe interactions with Xe atoms.

Stimuli-Responsive, Dynamic Supramolecular Organic Frameworks

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) are a class of three-dimensional, potentially porous materials obtained by the self-assembly of organic building blocks held together by weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and dispersion forces. SOFs are being extensively studied for their potential applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, guest encapsulation and sensing. The supramolecular forces that guide their self-assembly endow them with an attractive combination of crystallinity and flexibility, providing intelligent dynamic materials that can respond to external stimuli in a reversible way. The present review article will focus on SOFs showing dynamic behaviour when exposed to different stimuli, highlighting fundamental aspects such as the combination of tectons and supramolecular interactions involved in the framework formation, structure-property relationship and their potential applications.

Robust Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework with Four-Fold Interpenetration for Adsorptive Separation of C2H6/C2H4 and Xe/Kr

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are an emerging class of porous materials that hold promise for the adsorptive separation of industrially relevant gas mixtures. However, developing HOFs with high thermal stability and resistance to water remains a daunting challenge. We report here a microporous HOF (HIAM-103) assembled from a hexacarboxylate linker (2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triylisophthalic acid, H6TMBTI). The compound crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, and its structure is a four-fold interpenetrated network. Upon thermal activation, the single crystals remain intact, allowing for precise determination of the activated structure. HIAM-103 exhibits remarkable thermal and hydrothermal stability. Its microporous channels demonstrate selective adsorption of C2H6 over C2H4 and Xe over Kr, and its separation capability toward mixed gases has been validated by column breakthrough experiments under dry and humid conditions. The preferential gas adsorption sites and separation mechanisms have been uncovered through DFT analysis, which suggests that the methyl group decorated 1D channels are the primary reason for the selective adsorption.

Single-crystal polymers (SCPs): from 1D to 3D architectures

Single-crystal polymers (SCPs) with unambiguous chemical structures at atomic-level resolutions have attracted great attention. Obtaining precise structural information of these materials is critical as it enables a deeper understanding of the potential driving forces for specific packing and long-range order, secondary interactions, and kinetic and thermodynamic factors. Such information can ultimately lead to success in controlling the synthesis or engineering of their crystal structures for targeted applications, which could have far-reaching impact. Successful synthesis of SCPs with atomic level control of the structures, especially for those with 2D and 3D architectures, is rare. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the synthesis of SCPs, including 1D, 2D, and 3D architectures. Solution synthesis, topochemical synthesis, and extreme condition synthesis are summarized and compared. Around 70 examples of SCPs with unambiguous structure information are presented, and their synthesis methods and structural analysis are discussed. This review offers critical insights into the structure-property relationships, providing guidance for the future rational design and bottom-up synthesis of a variety of highly ordered polymers with unprecedented functions and properties.

Multivariate Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Tunable Permanent Porosities for Capture of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Precise synthesis of topologically predictable and discrete molecular crystals with permanent porosities remains a long-term challenge. Here, we report the first successful synthesis of a series of 11 isoreticular multivariate hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MTV-HOFs) from pyrene-based derivatives bearing -H, -CH3 , -NH2 and -F groups achieved by a shape-fitted, π-π stacking self-assembly strategy. These MTV-HOFs are single-crystalline materials composed of tecton, as verified by single-crystal diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, Raman spectra, water sorption isotherms and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These MTV-HOFs exhibit tunable hydrophobicity with water uptake starting from 50 to 80 % relative humidity, by adjusting the combinations and ratios of functional groups. As a proof of application, the resulting MTV-HOFs were shown to be capable of capturing a mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) from moisture. The location of different functional groups within the pores of the MTV-HOFs leads to a synergistic effect, which resulted in a superior CEES/H2 O selectivity (up to 94 %) compared to that of the HOFs with only pure component and enhanced breakthrough performance (up to 4000 min/g) when compared to benchmark MOF materials. This work is an important advance in the synthesis of MTV-HOFs, and provides a platform for the development of porous molecular materials for numerous applications.

Solution-Processed Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Nanofilms for High-Performance Resistive Memory Devices

The integration of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) into electronic devices holds great promise due to their high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, and easy regeneration. However, despite their potential, the utilization of HOFs in electronic devices remains largely unexplored, primarily due to the challenges associated with fabricating high-quality films. Herein, a controlled synthesis of HOF nanofilms with smooth surface, good crystallinity, and high orientation is achieved using a solution-processed approach. The memristors exhibit outstanding bipolar switching performance with a low set voltage of 0.86 V, excellent retention of 1.64 × 104 s, and operational endurance of 60 cycles. Additionally, these robust memristors display remarkable thermal stability, maintaining their performance even at elevated temperatures of up to 200 °C. More strikingly, scratched HOF films can be readily regenerated through a simple solvent rinsing process, enabling their reuse for the fabrication of new memristors, which is difficult to achieve with traditional resistive switching materials. Additionally, a switching mechanism based on the reversible formation and annihilation of conductive filaments is revealed. This work provides novel and invaluable insights that have a significant impact on advancing the widespread adoption of HOFs as active layers in electronic devices.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks: new horizons in biomedical applications

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are an emerging attractive class of highly crystalline porous materials characterized by significant biocompatibility, rich chemical functionalities and well-defined porosity. The unique advantages including metal-free nature and reversible binding manner significantly distinguish HOFs from other porous materials in the biotechnology and biomedical field. However, the relevant HOF studies still remain in their infancy despite the promising and remarkable results that have been presented in recent years. Due to the intricate and dynamic nature of physiological conditions, the major challenge lies in the stability and structural diversity of HOFs in vivo. In this Tutorial Review, we summarize the common building blocks for the construction of HOF-based functional biomaterials and the latest developments in the biological field. Moreover, we highlight current challenges regarding the stability and functionalization of HOFs along with the corresponding potential solutions. This Tutorial Review will have a profound effect in future years on the design and applications of HOF-based biomaterials.

Soft Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Constructed Using a Flexible Organic Cage Hinge

Soft porous crystals combine flexibility and porosity, allowing them to respond structurally to external physical and chemical environments. However, striking the right balance between flexibility and sufficient rigidity for porosity is challenging, particularly for molecular crystals formed by using weak intermolecular interactions. Here, we report a flexible oxygen-bridged prismatic organic cage molecule, Cage-6-COOH, which has three pillars that exhibit "hinge-like" rotational motion in the solid state. Cage-6-COOH can form a range of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) where the "hinge" can accommodate a remarkable 67° dihedral angle range between neighboring units. This stems both from flexibility in the noncovalent hydrogen-bonding motifs in the HOFs and the molecular flexibility in the oxygen-linked cage hinge itself. The range of structures for Cage-6-COOH includes two topologically complex interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β. CageHOF-2α is nonporous, while CageHOF-2β has permanent porosity and a surface area of 458 m2 g-1. The flexibility of Cage-6-COOH allows this molecule to rapidly transform from a low-crystallinity solid into the two crystalline interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β, under mild conditions simply by using acetonitrile or ethanol vapor, respectively. This self-healing behavior was selective, with the CageHOF-2β structure exhibiting structural memory behavior.

A Nitro-Modified Luminescent Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Non-Contact and High-Contrast Sensing of Aromatic Amines

The global demand for intelligent sensing of aromatic amines has consistently increased due to concerns about health and the environment. Efforts to improve material design and understand mechanisms have been made, but highly efficient non-contact sensing with host-guest structures remains a challenge. Herein, we report the first example of non-contact, high-contrast sensing of aromatic amines in a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) based on a nitro-modified stereo building block. Direct observation of binding interactions of trapped amines is achieved, leading to charge separation-induced emission quenching between host and guests. Non-contact sensing of aniline and diphenylamine is realized with quenching efficiencies up to 91.7 % and 97.0 %, which shows potential for versatile applications. This work provides an inspiring avenue to engineer multifunctional HOFs via co-crystal preparations, thus enriching applications of porous materials with explicit mechanisms.

Melamine-participant hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with strong hydrogen bonds and hierarchical micropores driving extraction of nitroaromatic compounds

Enrichment and detection of trace pollutants in the real matrix are essential for evaluating water quality. In this study, benefiting from the good affinities of 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene) (H4TBAPy) with itself and melamine (MA) respectively, the composite hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs, MA/PFC-1), PFC-1 self-assembled by 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene), were successfully constructed by the mild strategy of solvent evaporation at room temperature. Through a series of characterizations, such as Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analyses, and N2 adsorption-desorption, etc., the MA/PFC-1 was confirmed to be a stable and excellent material. In addition, it possessed high surface area, hierarchical micropores, strong hydrogen bonds, and rich function groups containing N and O heteroatoms, since the newly introduced MA could be another hydrogen bonding motif, as well as increased the polarity of reaction solvent. These advantages make MA/PFC-1 be an ideal coating material for solid phase microextraction (SPME). Satisfactory enrichment factors for nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) were got by the MA/PFC-1 fiber under the optimized conditions obtained by the control variables (extraction time of 60 min, extraction temperature of 80 °C, desorption time of 6 min, desorption temperature of 260 °C, pH value of 7, and stirring speed of 250 rpm). MA/PFC-1 was further used to develop an analytical method for NACs based on head-space SPME coupled with gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry (GC‒MS). The developed method with low limits of detection (4.30-20.83 ng L-1) and good reproducibility (relative standard deviations <8.6%). The excellent performance allowed the successful application of the developed method in the determinations of trace NACs in real water samples with recoveries of 80.1%-119%. This study proposed a mild approach to synthesize composite HOFs via doping MA and developed an environmentally friendly method for the precise determinations of NACs in the environment.

Porphyrin-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework for visible light driven photocatalytic removal of U(VI) from real low-level radioactive wastewater

The reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) precipitates by visible light is an environmentally friendly and highly effective strategy to remove uranium from uranium-containing radioactive wastewater. Herein, a porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) of UPC-H4a was self-assembled by intermolecular hydrogen bonds of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-(2,4-diaminotriazine)phenyl) porphyrin to remove U(VI) from aqueous solution. UPC-H4a has high crystallinity with permanent porosity, excellent photocatalytic property, good chemical stability, and strong photocatalytic reducibility. The experiments showed that UPC-H4a removed 98.18% of U(VI) after illumination for 120 min, with high selectivity, strong ion interference resistance, and good reusability. A real low-level radioactive wastewater was employed to estimate the potential of UPC-H4a for practical application and its removal rate can reach 66.14% in the presence of redox competing metal ions, exhibiting great potential for practical application. The DFT calculations and EPR spectra revealed that a more negative electrostatic potential of DAT-porphyrin and the formed intermolecular hydrogen bonds in UPC-H4a can facilitate the participation of photogenerated electrons in the O2/∙O2- reaction, and the radical of ∙O2- was proved to be the critical participant in U(VI) photoreduction. The discovery of UPC-H4a in this work will help to develop more potential applications of HOFs as photocatalysts in radioactive wastewater treatment.

Taming Multiscale Structural Complexity in Porous Skeletons: From Open Framework Materials to Micro/Nanoscaffold Architectures

Recent developments in the design and synthesis of more and more sophisticated organic building blocks with controlled structures and physical properties, combined with the emergence of novel assembly modes and nanofabrication methods, make it possible to tailor unprecedented structurally complex porous systems with precise multiscale control over their architectures and functions. By tuning their porosity from the nanoscale to microscale, a wide range of functional materials can be assembled, including open frameworks and micro/nanoscaffold architectures. During the last two decades, significant progress is made on the generation and optimization of advanced porous systems, resulting in high-performance multifunctional scaffold materials and novel device configurations. In this perspective, a critical analysis is provided of the most effective methods for imparting controlled physical and chemical properties to multifunctional porous skeletons. The future research directions that underscore the role of skeleton structures with varying physical dimensions, from molecular-level open frameworks (<10 nm) to supramolecular scaffolds (10-100 nm) and micro/nano scaffolds (>100 nm), are discussed. The limitations, challenges, and opportunities for potential applications of these multifunctional and multidimensional material systems are also evaluated in particular by addressing the greatest challenges that the society has to face.

A Microporous Hydrogen Bonded Organic Framework for Highly Selective Separation of Carbon Dioxide over Acetylene

The separation of acetylene (C2 H2 ) from carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is a very important but challenging task due to their similar molecular dimensions and physical properties. In terms of porous adsorbents for this separation, the CO2 -selective porous materials are superior to the C2 H2 -selective ones because of the cost- and energy-efficiency but have been rarely achieved. Herein we report our unexpected discovery of the first hydrogen bonded organic framework (HOF) constructed from a simple organic linker 2,4,6-tri(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)pyridine (PYTPZ) (termed as HOF-FJU-88) as the highly CO2 -selective porous material. HOF-FJU-88 is a two-dimensional HOFs with a pore pocket of about 7.6 Å. The activated HOF-FJU-88 takes up a high amount of CO2 (59.6 cm3  g-1 ) at ambient conditions with the record IAST selectivity of 1894. Its high performance for the CO2 /C2 H2 separation has been further confirmed through breakthrough experiments, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and molecular simulations.

Recent Advances in Multifunctional Reticular Framework Nanoparticles: A Paradigm Shift in Materials Science Road to a Structured Future

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) have become a highly sought-after research domain that offers a promising avenue for developing cutting-edge nanostructured materials, both in their pristine state and when subjected to various chemical and structural modifications. Metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks are examples of these emerging materials that have gained significant attention due to their unique properties, such as high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, unique structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research on base-stable POFs, emphasizing the distinct pros and cons of reticular framework nanoparticles compared to other types of nanocluster materials. Thereafter, the review highlights the unique opportunity to produce multifunctional tailoring nanoparticles to meet specific application requirements. It is recommended that this potential for creating customized nanoparticles should be the driving force behind future synthesis efforts to tap the full potential of this multifaceted material category.

Pore Modulation of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Efficient Separation of Propylene

Developing hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) that combine functional sites, size control, and storage capability for targeting gas molecule capture is a novel and challenging venture. However, there is a lack of effective strategies to tune the hydrogen-bonded network to achieve high-performance HOFs. Here, a series of HOFs termed as HOF-ZSTU-M (M=1, 2, and 3) with different pore structures are obtained by introducing structure-directing agents (SDAs) into the hydrogen-bonding network of tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP). These HOFs have distinct space configurations with pore channels ranging from discrete to continuous multi-dimensional. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis reveals a rare diversity of hydrogen-bonding models dominated by SDAs. HOF-ZSTU-2, which forms a strong layered hydrogen-bonding network with ammonium (NH4 + ) through multiple carboxyl groups, has a suitable 1D "pearl-chain" channel for the selective capture of propylene (C3 H6 ). At 298 K and 1 bar, the C3 H6 storage density of HOF-ZSTU-2 reaches 0.6 kg L-1 , representing one of the best C3 H6 storage materials, while offering a propylene/propane (C3 H6 /C3 H8 ) selectivity of 12.2. Theoretical calculations and in situ SCXRD provide a detailed analysis of the binding strength of C3 H6 at different locations in the pearl-chain channel. Dynamic breakthrough tests confirm that HOF-ZSTU-2 can effectively separate C3 H6 from multi-mixtures.

Photo Responsive Electron and Proton Conductivity within a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

Rational design of crystalline porous materials with coupled proton-electron transfer has not yet been reported to date. Herein, we report a donor-acceptor (D-A) π-π stacking hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF; HOF-FJU-36) with zwitterionic 1,1'-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium (H2 L2+ ) as acceptor and 2,7-naphthalene disulfonate (NDS2- ) as donor to form a two-dimensional (2D) layer. Three water molecules were situated in the channels to connect with acidic species through hydrogen bonding interactions to give a 3D framework. The continuous π-π interactions along the a axis and the smooth H-bonding chain along the b axis provide the electron and proton transfer pathways, respectively. After 405 nm light irradiation, the photogenerated radicals could simultaneously endow HOF-FJU-36 with photoswitchable electron and proton conductivity due to coupled electron-proton transfer. By single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transient absorption spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the mechanism of the switchable conductivity upon irradiation has been demonstrated.

A robust and ultra-high-surface hydrogen-bonded organic framework promoting high-efficiency solid phase microextraction of multiple persistent organic pollutants from beverage and tea

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widely distributed in the environment and are toxic, even at low concentrations. In this study, we first used hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) to enrich POPs, based on solid phase microextraction (SPME). The HOF called PFC-1 (self-assembled by 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene) has an ultra-high specific surface area, excellent thermochemical stability, and abundant functional groups, making it potential to be an excellent coating in SPME. And the as-prepared PFC-1 fiber have demonstrated outstanding enrichment abilities for nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) and POPs. Furthermore, the PFC-1 fiber was coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to develop an ultrasensitive and practical analytical method with wide linearity (0.2-200 ng·L^-1), low detection limits for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) (0.070-0.082 ng·L^-1) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (0.030-0.084 ng·L^-1), good repeatability (6.7-9.9%), and satisfactory reproducibility (4.1-8.2%). Trace concentrations of OCPs and PCBs in drinking water, tea beverage, and tea were also determined precisely with the proposed analytical method.

Charge "mis-matched" hydrogen bonded frameworks for cation exchange and dye sorption

Anionic hydrogen bonded frameworks were synthesised from di or tetra-amidinium hydrogen bond donor components and a charge "mis-matched" tecton possessing a 5- charge but only four hydrogen bond accepting groups. The net negative charge on the framework skeletons necessitates the presence of a cation in the framework channel. In one of the frameworks, the initially incorporated organic cation was rapidly displaced by smaller inorganic cations, or the cationic dye methylene blue. This facilitated the effective and selective removal of this dye from water.

Application of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks in Environmental Remediation: Recent Advances and Future Trends

The hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of porous materials with crystalline frame structures, which are self-assembled from organic structures by hydrogen bonding in non-covalent bonds π-π packing and van der Waals force interaction. HOFs are widely used in environmental remediation due to their high specific surface area, ordered pore structure, pore modifiability, and post-synthesis adjustability of various physical and chemical forms. This work summarizes some rules for constructing stable HOFs and the synthesis of HOF-based materials (synthesis of HOFs, metallized HOFs, and HOF-derived materials). In addition, the applications of HOF-based materials in the field of environmental remediation are introduced, including adsorption and separation (NH3, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2, C2H2/C2He and CeH6, C2H2/CO2, Xe/Kr, etc.), heavy metal and radioactive metal adsorption, organic dye and pesticide adsorption, energy conversion (producing H2 and CO2 reduced to CO), organic dye degradation and pollutant sensing (metal ion, aniline, antibiotic, explosive steam, etc.). Finally, the current challenges and further studies of HOFs (such as functional modification, molecular simulation, application extension as remediation of contaminated soil, and cost assessment) are discussed. It is hoped that this work will help develop widespread applications for HOFs in removing a variety of pollutants from the environment.

Hybrid Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Structures and Functional Applications

As a new class of porous crystalline materials, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) assembled from building blocks by hydrogen bonds have gained increasing attention. HOFs benefit from advantages including mild synthesis, easy purification, and good recyclability. However, some HOFs transform into unstable frameworks after desolvation, which hinders their further applications. Nowadays, the main challenges of developing HOFs lie in stability improvement, porosity establishment, and functionalization. Recently, more and more stable and permanently porous HOFs have been reported. Of all these design strategies, stronger charge-assisted hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds have been proven to be effective for developing stable, porous, and functional solids called hybrid HOFs, including ionic and metallized HOFs. This Review discusses the rational design synthesis principles of hybrid HOFs and their cutting-edge applications in selective inclusion, proton conduction, gas separation, catalysis and so forth.

2D Organic Materials: Status and Challenges

In the past few decades, 2D layer materials have gradually become a central focus in materials science owing to their uniquely layered structural qualities and good optoelectronic properties. However, in the development of 2D materials, several disadvantages, such as limited types of materials and the inability to synthesize large-scale materials, severely confine their application. Therefore, further exploration of new materials and preparation methods is necessary to meet technological developmental needs. Organic molecular materials have the advantage of being customizable. Therefore, if organic molecular and 2D materials are combined, the resulting 2D organic materials would have excellent optical and electrical properties. In addition, through this combination, the free design and large-scale synthesis of 2D materials can be realized in principle. Furthermore, 2D organic materials exhibit excellent properties and unique functionalities along with great potential for developing sensors, biomedicine, and electronics. In this review, 2D organic materials are divided into five categories. The preparation methods and material properties of each class of materials are also described in detail. Notably, to comprehensively understand each material's advantages, the latest research applications for each material are presented in detail and summarized. Finally, the future development and application prospects of 2D organic materials are briefly discussed.

Thermally Crosslinked Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Membranes for Highly Selective Ion Separation

The weak bonding energy and flexibility of hydrogen bonds can hinder the long-term use of hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) materials under harsh conditions. Here we invented a thermal-crosslinking method to form polymer materials based on a diamino triazine (DAT) HOF (FDU-HOF-1), containing high-density hydrogen bonding of N-H⋯N. With the increase of temperature to 648 K, the formation of -NH- bonds between neighboring HOF tectons by releasing NH₃ was observed based on the disappearance of the characteristic peaks of amino groups on FDU-HOF-1 in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR). The variable temperature PXRD indicated the formation of a new peak at 13.2° in addition to the preservation of the original diffraction peaks of FDU-HOF-1. The water adsorption, acid-base stability (12 M HCl to 20 M NaOH) and solubility experiments concluded that the thermally crosslinked HOFs (TC-HOFs) are highly stable. The membranes fabricated by TC-HOF demonstrate the permeation rate of K⁺ ions as high as 270 mmol m^-2 h^-1 as well as high selectivity of K⁺/Mg²⁺ (50) and Na⁺/Mg²⁺ (40), which was comparable to Nafion membranes. This study provides guidance for the future design of highly stable crystalline polymer materials based on HOFs.
