Abstract
The main feedstock for the value-added phosphorus chemicals used in industry and research is white phosphorus (P4), from which the key intermediate for forming P(III) compounds is PCl3. Owing to its high reactivity, syntheses based on PCl3 are often accompanied by product mixtures and laborious work-up procedures, so an alternative process to form a viable P(III) transfer reagent is desirable. Our concept of oxidative onioation, where white phosphorus is selectively converted into triflate salts of versatile P1 transfer reagents such as [P(LN)3][OTf]3 (LN is a cationic, N-based substituent; that is, 4-dimethylaminopyridinio), provides a convenient alternative for the implementation of P-O, P-N and P-C bonds while circumventing the use of PCl3. We use p-block element compounds of type RnE (for example, Ph3As or PhI) to access weak adducts between nitrogen Lewis bases LN and the corresponding dications [RnELN]2+. The proposed equilibrium between [RnELN]2+ + LN and [RnE(LN)2]2+ allows for the complete oxidative onioation of all six P-P bonds in P4 to yield highly reactive and versatile trications [P(LN)3]3+.

Abstract
Classically tetraaryl diphosphanes have been synthesized through Wurtz-type reductive coupling of halophosphanes R2PX or more recently, through the dehydrocoupling of phosphines R2PH. Catalytic variants of the dehydrocoupling reaction have been reported, but are limited to R2PH compounds. Using PEt3 as a catalyst, we now show that TipPBr2 (Tip = 2,4,6-iPr3C6H2) is selectively coupled to give the dibromodiphosphane (TipPBr)2 (1), a compound not accessible using classic Mg reduction. Surprisingly, when using DipPBr2 (Dip = 2,6-iPr3C6H3) in the PEt3 catalysed reductive coupling the diphosphene (PDip)2 (2) with a PP double was formed selectively. In benzene solutions (PDip)2 has a half life time of ca. 28 days and can be utilized with NHCs to access NHC-phosphinidene adducts. To show that this protocol is more widely applicable, we show that Ph2PCl and Mes2PX (X = Cl, Br) are efficiently coupled using 10 mol% of PEt3 to give (Ph2P)2 and (Mes2P)2, respectively. Control experiments show that [BrPEt3]Br is a potential oxidation product in the catalytic cycle, which can be debrominated by Zn dust as a sacrificial reductant.

Abstract
The hydrogen/halogen exchange of phosphines has been exploited to establish a truly useable substrate scope and straightforward methodology for the formation of cyclopolyphosphines. Starting from a single dichlorophosphine, a sacrificial proton "donor phosphine" makes the rapid, mild synthesis of cyclopolyphosphines possible: reactions are complete within 10 min at room temperature. Novel (aryl)cyclopentaphosphines (ArP)5 have been formed in good conversion, with the crystal structures presented. The use of catalytic quantities of iron(III) acetylacetonate provides significant improvements in conversion in the context of diphosphine (Ar2P)2 and alkyl-substituted cyclotetra- or cyclopentaphosphine ((AlkylP)n, where n = 4 or 5) formation. Both iron-free and iron-mediated reactions show high levels of selectivity for one specific ring size. Finally, investigations into the reactivity of Fe(acac)3 suggest that the iron species is acting as a sink for the hydrochloric acid byproduct of the reaction.

Abstract
By combining the diphosphanes Ar2P-PAr2, where Ar = C6H5, 4-C6H4Me, 4-C6H4OMe, 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2, it has been shown that P,P-metathesis generally occurs rapidly under ambient conditions. DFT calculations have shown that the stability of unsymmetrical diphosphanes Z2P-PZ'2 is a function of the difference between the Z and Z' substituents in terms of size and electronegativity. Of the mechanisms that were calculated for the P,P-metathesis, the most likely was considered to be one involving Ar2P˙ radicals. The observations that photolysis increases the rate of the P,P-metatheses and TEMPO inhibits it, are consistent with a radical chain process. The P,P-metathesis reactions that involve (o-Tol)2P-P(o-Tol)2 are anomalously slow and, in the absence of photolysis, were only observed to take place in CHCl3 and CH2Cl2. The role of the chlorinated solvent is ascribed to the formation of Ar2PCl which catalyses the P,P-metathesis. The slow kinetics observed with (o-Tol)2P-P(o-Tol)2 is tentatively attributed to the o-CH3 groups quenching the (o-Tol)2P˙ radicals or inhibiting the metathesis reaction sterically.

Abstract
A reactivity study of a β-diketiminate titanium(iii) phosphanylphosphido complex [MeNacNacTi(Cl){η2-P(SiMe3)-PtBu2}] (1) towards ketones such as benzophenone, 9-fluorenone, acetophenone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone is reported. The reactions of 1 with aromatic ketones (without α-protons) directly lead to the Ti(iii) complex [MeNacNacTi(μ2-Cl)(OSiMe3)] (5) and Ti(iv) complexes with the pinacol condensation product [MeNacNacTi(OSiMe3)(η2-pinacolate)] (3), and phosphanylphosphaalkenes Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (2) and (fluorenyl)C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (6), respectively. The reaction with acetophenone leads to the titanium(iii) complex with the aldol condensation product as ligand [MeNacNacTi(Cl){OC{Me(Ph)}CH2(C[double bond, length as m-dash]O)Ph}] (8) and in parallel to phosphanylphosphaalkene (Ph)MeC[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (9) and 5. The reactions of 1 with cyclic ketones (cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone) lead to Ti(iii) complexes [{(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Me)CHC(Me)[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)((CH2)4CO)}Ti(Cl){PtBu2-P(SiMe3)((CH2)4CO)}] (10) and [{(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Me)CHC(Me)[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)((CH2)5CO)}Ti(Cl){PtBu2-P(SiMe3)((CH2)5CO)}] (11), which are formed via the successive insertion of two molecules of ketone to one molecule of 1. The stability investigation of complexes 10 and 11 in a polar solvent (THF) revealed that under these conditions, the complexes decompose, resulting in titanium(iii) complexes with aldol condensation products and the expected phosphanylphosphaalkenes (CH2)4C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (10a) and (CH2)5C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (11a). In the reaction of 1 with cycloheptanone, only the Ti(iii) complex with the aldol condensation product [MeNacNacTi(Cl){OC(CH2)6}CH(C[double bond, length as m-dash]O)(CH2)5] (12) was isolated. The structures 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 11b and 12 were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy, while all the phosphanylphosphaalkenes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Synthesis of mixed-substituted tetraphosphetanes (RP-PtBu)2 (R=Ph (4), Py (5); Py=2-pyridyl) is achieved from the condensation of dipyrazolylphosphanes RPpyr2 (R=Py (1), Ph (3); pyr=3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl) as P1 -building block (R-P) and tBuPH2 in an equimolar ratio. Compound 5 is of special interest since the presence of two pyridyl-substituents as well as the P4 -core allows for a rich coordination chemistry with coinage metal salts [Cu(MeCN)4 ][OTf], Ag[OTf] and in situ formed [Au(tht)][OTf] (tht=tetrahydrothiophene). Both tetraphosphetanes undergo alkylation reaction with MeOTf to give a series of tetraphosphetanium and tetraphosphetanediium triflate salts with additional methylation of the pyridyl-moiety in case of 5 resulting in interesting novel cyclic trications. Harsh reaction condition and an excess of MeOTf converts 5 into the cyclic trication [-P(Me Py)PMe2 P(Me Py)PtBu-]3+ (133+ ; Me Py=1-methylpyridiniumyl) through the elimination of isobutene. This salt undergoes a complicated rearrangement reaction involving a P-P/P-P bond metathesis to form trication [-P(MePy)3 PtBu-]3+ (173+ ) when reacted with Me2 PPMe2 .

Abstract
Herein, by applying visible-light photoredox catalysis, we have now achieved the first example of catalytic dehydrogenative coupling of phosphines and thiophenols that proceeds at room temperature. Key to our success is the use of benzaldehyde as a soft oxidant, which avoids the issue of phosphine oxidation. Furthermore, we observed the unexpected dealkylative coupling of secondary and tertiary alkylphosphine with thiophenols.

Abstract
[LC R P((PhP)2 C2 H4 )][OTf] (4 a,b[OTf]) and [LC iPr P(PPh2 )2 ][OTf] (5 b[OTf]) were prepared from the reaction of imidazoliumyl-substituted dipyrazolylphosphane triflate salts [LC R P(pyr)2 ][OTf] (3 a,b[OTf]; a: R=Me, b=iPr; LC R =1,3-dialkyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-yl; pyr=3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) with the secondary phosphanes PhP(H)C2 H4 P(H)Ph) and Ph2 PH. A stepwise double P-N/P-P bond metathesis to catena-tetraphosphane-2,3-diium triflate salt [(Ph2 P)2 (LC Me P)2 ][OTf]2 (7 a[OTf]2 ) is observed when reacting 3 a[OTf] with diphosphane P2 Ph4 . The coordination ability of 5 b[OTf] was probed with selected coinage metal salts [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ]OTf, AgOTf and AuCl(tht) (tht=tetrahydrothiophene). For AuCl(tht), the helical complex [{(Ph2 PPLC iPr )Au}4 ][OTf]4 (9[OTf]4 ) was unexpectedly formed as a result of a chloride-induced P-P bond cleavage. The weakly coordinating triflate anion enables the formation of the expected copper(I) and silver(I) complexes [(5 b)M(CH3 CN)3 ][OTf]2 (M=Cu, Ag) (10[OTf]2 , 11[OTf]2 ).

Abstract
Cationic imidazolio-phosphines show two-sided reactivity towards bases, undergoing either Brønsted-type proton transfer to imidazolio-phosphides or autocatalytic Lewis acid/base reaction cascades to yield P-free imidazolium ions and oligophosphines.

Abstract
Triphosphanes R'2PP(R)PR'2 (9a,c: R = Py; 9b R = BTz), 1,3-diphenyl-2-pyridyl-triphospholane 9d and pentaphospholanes (RP)5 (13: R = Py; 18: R = BTz) are obtained in high yield of up to 98% from the reaction of dipyrazolylphosphanes RPpyr2 (5: R = Py; 6: R = BTz; pyr = 1,3-dimethylpyrazolyl) and the respective secondary phosphane (R'2PH, R' = Cy (9a,b), t Bu (9c); PhPH(CH2)2PHPh (9d)). The formation of derivatives 9a-d proceeds via a condensation reaction while the formation of 13 and 18 can only be explained by a selective scrambling reaction. We realized that the reaction outcome is strongly solvent dependent as outlined by the controlled scrambling reaction pathway towards pentaphospholane 13. In our further investigations to apply these compounds as ligands we first confined ourselves to the coordination chemistry of triphosphane 9a with respect to coinage metal salts and discussed the observation of different syn- and anti-isomeric metal complexes based on NMR and X-ray analyses as well as quantum chemical calculations. Methylation reactions of 9a with MeOTf yield triphosphan-1-ium Cy2MePP(Py)PCy2 + (10 +) and triphosphane-1,3-diium Cy2MePP(Py)PMeCy2 2+ (11 2+) cations as triflate salts. Salt 11[OTf]2 reacts with pentaphospholane 13 in an unprecedented chain growth reaction to give the tetraphosphane-1,4-diium triflate salt Cy2MePP(Py)P(Py)PMeCy2 2+ (19[OTf]2) via a P-P/P-P bond metathesis reaction. The latter salt is unstable in solution and rearranges via a rare [1,2]-migration of the Cy2MeP-group followed by the elimination of the triphosph-2-en-1-ium cation [Cy2MePPPMeCy2]+ (20 +) to yield a novel 1,4,2-diazaphospholium salt (21[OTf]).

Homo- and heterodehydrocoupling of phosphines mediated by alkali metal catalysts. Nat Commun 2019; 10:2786. Abstract
Catalytic chemistry that involves the activation and transformation of main group substrates is relatively undeveloped and current examples are generally mediated by expensive transition metal species. Herein, we describe the use of inexpensive and readily available tBuOK as a catalyst for P-P and P-E (E = O, S, or N) bond formation. Catalytic quantities of tBuOK in the presence of imine, azobenzene hydrogen acceptors, or a stoichiometric amount of tBuOK with hydrazobenzene, allow efficient homodehydrocoupling of phosphines under mild conditions (e.g. 25 °C and < 5 min). Further studies demonstrate that the hydrogen acceptors play an intimate mechanistic role. We also show that our tBuOK catalysed methodology is general for the heterodehydrocoupling of phosphines with alcohols, thiols and amines to generate a range of potentially useful products containing P-O, P-S, or P-N bonds.

Abstract
Stepwise oxidation of 1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)naphthalene and a series of (oligo)methylene-linked diphosphines with XeF2 followed by fluoride abstraction yields a family of compounds featuring phosphine, phosphonium and phosphorane moieties in close proximity. The bisphosphonium ions [(C10H6)(Ph2PF)2]2+ (5) and [CH2(Ph2PF)2]2+ (9a) exhibit remarkable Lewis acidity arising from the proximity of the phosphonium centers. The effectiveness of bisphosphonium dications (5, 9a-e) is examined in a series of Lewis acid catalysed transformations.

Abstract
The stoichiometric reaction of trityl cation with two equivalents of Ph2PH affords the phosphine stabilized phosphenium salt [Ph2(H)PPPh2][B(C6F5)4] via hydride abstraction, while catalytic amounts of B(p-HC6F4)3 effects catalytic phosphine dehydrocoupling with the liberation of H2.

Abstract
The development of a simple, transition-metal-free approach for the formation of phosphorus-phosphorus bonds through dehydrocoupling of phosphines is presented. The reaction is mediated by electronically stabilized lithium chloride carbenoids and affords a variety of different diphosphines under mild reaction conditions. The developed protocol is simple and highly efficient and allows the isolation of novel functionalized diphosphines in high yields.
