Planar Chiral Tetrasubstituted [2.2]Paracyclophane: Optical Resolution and Functionalization

Inner-Bond-Cleavage Approach to Figure-Eight Macrocycles from Planar Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Figure-eight-shaped nonplanar π-systems adopt distinctive chiral D2-symmetric structures, which are ideal for realizing efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). However, the short-step and enantioselective synthesis of figure-eight π-systems represents a considerable challenge for the conventional bottom-up synthetic strategy. Herein, we report that the oxidative cleavage of the internal double bond of a commercially available polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, i.e., dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC), catalytically affords a figure-eight electron-accepting macrocycle, i.e., cyclobisbiphenylenecarbonyl (CBBC), with high scalability (up to 3.3 g) and excellent enantioselectivity (94% ee). This inner-bond-cleavage approach also applies to larger PAHs, affording highly distorted molecular frameworks that comprise two figure-eight subunits. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the peripheral functionalization of CBBC with carbazole afforded donor-acceptor-type emitter, which shows thermally activated delayed fluorescence and emits CPL with a g value of 1.0 × 10-2. This g value is ten times higher than those of previously reported chiral TADF-active emitters for circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes. These results demonstrate that oxidative inner-bond cleavage is a powerful synthetic strategy for creating innovative materials that incorporate molecules with figure-eight structures.

AIEE-active dichlorobenzene and chlorobenzene ratiometric fluorescent probe based on [2.2]paracyclophane

Two AIEE-active [2.2]paracyclophanyl-based diester and monoester (1a and 1b) were facilely synthesized by one-pot method and applied as ratiometric fluorescent probe to detect dichlorobenzene (DCB) and chlorobenzene (CB). Compared with compound 1b, 1a exhibits high sensitivity and low detection limits for DCB and CB in dichloromethane (DCM), particularly, the detection sensitivities for ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB), meta-dichlorobenzene (m-DCB) and chlorobenzene can be modulated by AIEE behavior with lower detection limits of 23.64, 56.27, and 5.92 ppm, respectively in THF/H2O mixed solutions with water fraction (fw) of 70 % due to the formation of aggregation-state. The X-ray structure analysis, theoretical calculations and photophysical properties in different solvents were investigated to reveal the distinctive photophysical behaviors of 1a and 1b. The facile synthesis, X-ray structure, AIEE modulated sensing properties for o-DCB, m-DCB, and CB in DCM and THF/H2O mixed solutions make 1a potential application as fluorescent probe for trace DCB and CB detection in drinking water.

Cyclic Azahelicene Dimers Showing Bright Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Selective Fluoride Recognition

Although helicenes are promising molecules, the synthetic difficulty and tediousness have often been problems, and only small amounts of optically pure helicenes have been obtained by using chiral HPLC in most cases. Herein, aza[7]helicenes or closed-aza[7]helicenes with (1R)-menthyl substituents were selectively synthesized via the intramolecular Scholl reaction, and the diastereomeric pairs were separated by silica gel column chromatography. The optically pure helicenes were further transformed into the corresponding cyclic dimers, and the chiroptical properties were investigated. The rigid π-frameworks of the dimers led to the high molar extinction coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields, while the twisted helicene moieties induced clear Cotton effects and CPL in the visible region, and the high CPL brightness (BCPL) was achieved. Furthermore, the cyclic dimers were found to have the macrocyclic cavity with the two NH groups suitable for the selective binding of a fluoride anion, which induced significantly redshifted fluorescence and CPL in the red region.

Synthesis of a novel twisted π-conjugated macrocycle via double Friedel-Crafts reaction and its physical properties

We synthesized a cyclic molecule from diarylalkynes and Meldrum's acid derivatives as the methylenation reagent via double Friedel-Crafts reaction. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirmed the twisted structure of the molecule. We also investigated their physical properties and homoconjugation by UV-Vis, photoluminescence, DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

Recent advances in circularly polarized luminescence of planar chiral organic compounds

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), as an important chiroptical phenomenon, can not only directly characterize excited-state structural information about chiroptical materials but also has great application prospects in 3D optical displays, information storage, biological probes, CPL lasers and so forth. Recently, chiral organic small molecules with CPL have attracted a lot of research interest because of their excellent luminescence efficiency, clear molecular structures, unique flexibility and easy functionalization. Planar chiral organic compounds make up an important class of chiral organic small molecular materials and often have rigid macrocyclic skeletons, which have important research value in the field of chiral supramolecular chemistry (e.g., chiral self-assembly and chiral host-guest chemistry). Therefore, research into planar chiral organic compounds has become a hotspot for CPL. It is time to summarize the recent developments in CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. In this feature article, we summarize various types of CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. Meanwhile, we overview recent research in the field of planar chiral CPL-active compounds in terms of optoelectronic devices, asymmetric catalysis, and chiroptical sensing. Finally, we discuss their future research prospects in the field of CPL-active materials. We hope that this review will be helpful to research work related to planar chiral luminescent materials and promote the development of chiral macrocyclic chemistry.

Simultaneous discovery of chiral and achiral dyes: elucidating the optical functions of helical and flag-hinged boron tetradentate complexes

The construction of novel complexes can lead to the manifestation of unexpected structures and properties, thereby making chemical exploration in experiments a potential source for novel discoveries. In this study, by reacting 6,6'-dihydrazineyl-2,2'-bipyridine with acyl chlorides and subsequently coordinating with boron trifluoride, two different boron-tetradentate ligand complexes were simultaneously generated. One of these complexes exhibited a unique structure in which tetra-BF2 moieties coordinated to all four coordination sites of the ligand molecule, forming a flag-hinged structure around the bipyridine part. The second complex featured a helical structure formed by the hybridization of two BF2 and one B-O-B moieties, representing a highly unusual form of the complex. The structures of these two boron complexes were consistently observed when various substituted acyl chlorides were employed. Furthermore, it was found that enhancing electron-donor properties could induce a redshift in emissions. Utilizing the dimethylamino group as the proton receptor promoted a yellow-to-blue fluorescence switch in the tetra-BF2 complex and an OFF/ON fluorescence in the B-O-B bridged complex upon protonation. The helical chirality observed in the latter complex resulted in stable (P)/(M)-enantiomers after optical resolution. This complex exhibited circular dichroism with a |gabs| of up to 1.2 × 10-2 and circularly polarized luminescence with a |glum| on the order of 10-3 in solution and polymer film.

Linker-dependent control of the chiroptical properties of polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) complexes

The effects of polymethylene bridges on the chiroptical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms were examined both experimentally and theoretically using newly designed planar chiral Pt analogues (1) having three-dimensional superstructures. A series of optically pure polymethylene-vaulted Pt complexes (R)- and (S)-1 were synthesized and characterized with regard to the chiroptical behaviour of the trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms. These complexes were found to exhibit structure-dependent chiroptical characteristics in solution, such that the absolute values of specific rotation, the circular dichroism dissymmetry factor (gabs) and the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) all increased upon shortening the polymethylene bridges. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations were used to analyse vaulted and non-vaulted complexes, which demonstrated that the present linker-dependent chiroptical properties resulted from constraint-induced changes in the square planar Pt coordination centres rather than from chiral distortion along the coordination platforms.

Recent Advances of Chiral Isolated and Small Organic Molecules: Structure and Properties for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This paper explores recent advancements in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibited by small and isolated organic molecules. The development and application of small CPL molecule are systematically reviewed through eight different chiral skeleton sections. Investigating the intricate interplay between molecular structure and CPL properties, the paper aims at providing and enlighting novel strategies for CPL-based applications.

Circularly Polarized Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Chiral Hole Transport Enantiomers

The circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) demonstrate promising application in 3D display due to the direct generation of circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL). But the chiral luminescence materials face challenges as intricated synthetic route, enantiomeric separation, etc. Herein, fresh CP-OLEDs are designed based on chiral hole transport material instead of chiral emitters. A pair of hole transport enantiomers (R/S-NPACZ) exhibit intense dissymmetry factors (|gPL|) about 5.0 × 10-3. With R/S-NPACZ as hole transport layers, CP-OLEDs are fabricated employing six achiral phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with different wavelengths, in consistence with the generated CPEL spectra. The CP-OLEDs based on achiral red, green, and blue iridium(III) complexes exhibit external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 14.9%, 30.7%, and 14.1% with |gEL| factors of 8.8 × 10-4, 2.3 × 10-3, and 2.0 × 10-3, respectively. Moreover, the devices using achiral blue, blueish-green, and green TADF materials display EQEs of 24.1%, 17.9%, and 25.4% with |gEL| factors of 1.0 × 10-3, 3.6 × 10-3, and 2.2 × 10-3, respectively. As far as known, it is the first example of CP-OLEDs based on chiral hole transport materials, which act as the organic circularly polarizers and have potential to generate CPEL from achiral luminescence materials.

Organocatalytic desymmetrization provides access to planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes

Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes consist of two functionalized benzene rings connected by two ethylene bridges. These organic compounds have a wide range of applications in asymmetric synthesis, as both ligands and catalysts, and in materials science, as polymers, energy materials and dyes. However, these molecules can only be accessed by enantiomer separation via (a) time-consuming chiral separations and (b) kinetic resolution approaches, often with a limited substrate scope, yielding both enantiomers. Here, we report a simple, efficient, metal-free protocol for organocatalytic desymmetrization of prochiral diformyl[2.2]paracyclophanes. Our detailed experimental mechanistic study highlights differences in the origin of enantiocontrol of pseudo-para and pseudo-gem diformyl derivatives in NHC catalyzed desymmetrizations based on whether a key Breslow intermediate is irreversibly or reversibly formed in this process. This gram-scale reaction enables a wide range of follow-up derivatizations of carbonyl groups, producing various enantiomerically pure planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives, thereby underscoring the potential of this method.

Circularly polarized luminescence and high photoluminescence quantum yields from rigid 5,10-dihydroindeno[2,1-a]indene and 2,2'-dialkoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl conjugates and copolymers

5,5,10,10-Tetramethyl-5,10-dihydroindeno[2,1-a]indene (COPV1(Me)) was installed into either the 3,3'- or 6,6'-positions of chiral 2,2'-dioctyloxy-1,1'-binaphthyl to afford 2 : 1 conjugates (monomeric compounds) and 1 : 1 copolymers. These compounds showed high photoluminescence quantum yields of >0.95 whilst also exhibiting circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The dissymmetry factors of CPL (gCPL) for the 3,3'- and 6,6'-monomeric compounds in THF were 6.6 × 10-4 and 3.3 × 10-4, respectively. The 3,3'-isomer has a higher g value than the 6,6'-isomer, which was attributed to the difference in the extent of π-conjugation and the angle between electronic and magnetic transition moments. The gCPL values of the 3,3'-linked and 6,6'-linked copolymers were 1.1 × 10-3 and 6.8 × 10-4, respectively. The structural rigidity of the COPV units is beneficial to achieve relatively high g values whilst maintaining a photoluminescence quantum yield that is close to unity by using a single type of fluorophore.

Rapid Synthesis of Chiral Figure-Eight Macrocycles Using a Preorganized Natural Product-Based Scaffold

Chiral D2 -symmetric figure-eight shaped macrocycles are promising scaffolds for amplifying the chiroptical properties of π-conjugated systems. By harnessing the inherent and adaptable conformational dynamics of a chiral C2 -symmetric bispyrrolidinoindoline (BPI) manifold, we developed an enantio-divergent modular synthetic platform to rapidly generate a diverse range of chiral macrocycles, spanning from 14- to 66-membered rings, eliminating the need for optical resolution. Notably, a 32-membered figure-eight macrocycle showed excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL: |glum |=1.1×10-2 ) complemented by a robust emission quantum yield (Φfl =0.74), to achieve outstanding CPL brightness (BCPL : ϵ×Φfl ×|glum |/2=480). Using quadruple Sonogashira couplings, this versatile synthetic platform enables precise adjustments of the angle, distance, and length among intersecting π-conjugated chromophores. Our synthetic strategy offers a streamlined and systematic approach to significantly enhance BCPL values for a variety of chiral D2 -symmetric figure-eight macrocycles.

Synthesis and characterization of one-handed helical oligo(o-phenylene)s: control of axial chirality by planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane

Optically active oligo(o-phenylene)-layered molecules were synthesized from planar chiral enantiopure [2.2]paracyclophane. Their structures and optical properties were characterized by experimental and theoretical approaches. The axial chiralities between phenylene rings of the oligo(o-phenylene)s were controlled by the planar chirality to form one-handed helical structures. The o-quinquephenyl-layered molecule was emissive, and circularly polarized luminescence was observed with a high anisotropy factor (|glum| value) of 0.012.

Dearomatization of [2.2]Paracyclophane-Derived N-Sulfonylimines through Cyclopropanation with Sulfur Ylides

An unprecedented dearomatization of [2.2]paracyclophane-derived cyclic N-sulfonylimines was conducted through cyclopropanation with sulfur ylides, giving a series of dearomative cyclopropanes with good yields. DFT calculations suggested that the dearomatization was attributed to the relatively weak aromaticity of [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives that resulted from the effect of the unique [2.2]paracyclophane skeleton and the electron-withdrawing N-sulfonyl group. Some downstream elaborations of the products were demonstrated.

Resolution of Expanded Porphyrinoids: A Path to Persistent Chirality and Appealing Chiroptical Properties

Chirality is a fundamental characteristic of nature. Expanded porphyrinoids and their analogues offer an attractive platform for delving into the intricacies of chirality. Expanded porphyrinoids comprise pyrrolic macrocycles and related heterocyclic systems. As a class, expanded porphyrinoids are widely recognized for their flexible structural features, nontrivial coordination capabilities, and intriguing optical and electronic properties. With limited exceptions, their inherent conformational flexibility coupled with a low racemization barrier allows for the facile interchange between enantiomers. As a result, achieving the effective chiral resolution of individual enantiomers and the subsequent exploration of their chiroptical properties represents a significant challenge. This review summarizes strategies used to realize the chiral resolution of expanded porphyrinoids and the understanding of intrinsic chiroptical properties that has emerged from these separation efforts. It is our hope that this review will serve not only to codify our current understanding of chiral expanded porphyrinoids, but also inspire advances in the generalized area of chiral functional materials.

Aggregation-induced emission from optically active X-shaped molecules based on planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane

An optically active π-stacked molecule was synthesized incorporating planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane and o-carborane units to impart circularly polarized luminescence and aggregation-induced emission properties to the molecule. The molecule exhibited a strong emission from the aggregated state in a mixed solvent system (H2O/THF) and the solid state in the PMMA matrix. In the aggregated state, weak circularly polarized luminescence was observed owing to the random intermolecular orientation. On the other hand, the circularly polarized luminescence was clearly observed in the PMMA film containing 1 wt% molecule. Theoretical studies using time-dependent density functional theory reproduced the molecule's circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence properties.

The hamburger-shape photocatalyst: thioxanthone-based chiral [2.2]paracyclophane for enantioselective visible-light photocatalysis of 3-methylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one and styrenes

A new thioxanthone-based photocatalyst with a [2.2]paracyclophane skeleton and planar chirality has been developed. The catalyst has been successfully applied in the visible light-mediated enantioselective aza Paternò-Büchi reactions of quinoxalinone and styrenes to produce azetidines. The structures of the catalyst derivatives were unequivocally determined by their single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis.

Single Molecular Persistent Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Binaphthol-Decorated Optically Innocent Cyclotriphosphazenes

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) features of BINOL-decorated cyclotriphosphazenes (CPs) are reported for the first time. The luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ) of these compounds in chloroform solutions and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films with wt 1 % doping concentrations are found to be 1.0×10-3 , and 2.9×10-3 , respectively. However, no CPL signal is observed for the pristine solids. The enantiomers (CP-(R)/CP-(S)) show ultraviolet photoluminescence (~350-360 nm) in solution and the solid state. These compounds show ~10 times larger absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) than the simple BINOLs in the solutions state. In the solid state, CP-(R) shows larger PLQY than binaphthol-(R); in contrast, the S enantiomer shows lower PLQY than binaphthol-(S); this indicates that the isomer-dependent solid-state packing of these compounds plays a crucial role in controlling the PL. Thin films with more than 1 % doping concentration and pristine solids of these compounds do not show persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (pRTP) due to concentration-caused quenching. However, thin films with wt 1 % of these chiral emitters exhibit pRTP characteristics with a ~159-343 ms lifetime under vacuum. Theoretical calculations reveal that the cyclophosphazene acts as an optically innocent dendritic core, and the optical features of these compounds are dictated by the pendent BINOL chromophore.

Circularly polarized chemiluminescence from planar chiral bis(adamantylidene-1,2-dioxetane)s

Bis(adamantylidene-1,2-dioxetane), upon conjugation to a planar chiral scaffold of [2.2]paracyclophane, gave chemical-triggerable circularly polarized chemiluminescence with a dissymmetry factor of 1.1 × 10-3 scale, to which exciton chirality upon chemiexcitation was assigned as the origin.

DNA-induced circularly polarized luminescence of helicene racemates

Enantiopure helicenes have been extensively investigated due to their outstanding chiroptical properties, while helicene racemates are considered as chiroptically silent. Here, we describe a facile method to produce circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from helicene racemates via supramolecular association with DNA in aqueous solution. Racemic cationic helicene derivatives are immobilized in the grooves of commercially available double-stranded right-handed DNA, and the discrimination of left- and right-handed helicenes by chiral DNA is monitored by single molecule force spectroscopy. This subsequently leads to the generation of prominent CPL with dissymmetric factor |glum | of close to 0.01, which is approximate to enantiopure helicenes. The strategy developed in this work avoids the tedious and expensive chiral resolution process and provides a distinctive insight into the fabrication of CPL-emitting systems.

Kinetic resolution of substituted amido[2.2]paracyclophanes via asymmetric electrophilic amination

Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives are a type of structurally intriguing and practically useful chiral molecules, which have found a range of important applications in the field of asymmetric catalysis and material science. However, access to enantioenriched [2.2]paracyclophanes represents a longstanding challenge in organic synthesis due to their unique structures, which are still highly dependent on the chiral chromatography separation technique and classical chemical resolution strategy to date. In this work, we report on an efficient and versatile kinetic resolution protocol for various substituted amido[2.2]paracyclophanes, including those with pseudo-geminal, pseudo-ortho, pseudo-meta and pseudo-para disubstitutions, using chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed asymmetric amination reaction, which was also applicable to the enantioselective desymmetrization of an achiral diamido[2.2]paracyclophane. Detailed experimental studies shed light on a new reaction mechanism for the electrophilic aromatic C-H amination, which proceeded through sequential triazane formation and N[1,5]-rearrangement. The facile large-scale kinetic resolution reaction and diverse derivatizations of both the recovered chiral starting materials and the C-H amination products showcased the potential of this method.

Chiroptical Response Control of Planar and Axially Chiral Polymethylene-Vaulted Platinum(II) Complexes Bearing 1,1'-Binaphthyl Frameworks

In this study, the synthesis, structure, and chiroptical response control of planar chiral polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)aryloxy]platinum(II) complexes bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl ligands are described. A series of enantiopure polymethylene (n = 4-10)-vaulted complexes were prepared in 6 steps using commercially available (R)- or (S)-BINOL as the starting material without an optical resolution process. The trans-coordination and three-dimensional vaulted structures of the platinum complexes were elucidated from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The complexes were found to show structural dependence of chiroptical responses in the dilute solution state such that the absolute values of [α]D, dissymmetry factors gabs in circular dichroism (CD), and glum in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) increased upon shortening the length of the polymethylene bridges. The enhanced chiroptical responses were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, and the results are discussed in terms of the molecular structures and transition dipole moments of the ground states. The structural dependence of the chiroptical responses was ascribed to the distortion of the coordination platforms caused by restriction of the vaulting methylene linkers.

Strong Chiroptical Effects in the Absorption and Emission of Macrocycles Based on the 2,5-Diaminoterephthalate Minimal Fluorophore

Chiral fluorescent macrocycles consisting of two to four units of dimethyl 2,5-diaminoterephthalate can be readily synthesized in a one-pot manner from inexpensive building blocks. Depending on the concentration, either a paracyclophane-like dimer with closely stacked benzene rings or a triangular trimer is the main product of the reaction. The macrocycles exhibit fluorescence in solution as well as in the solid state with maxima that are red-shifted with decreasing size of the macrocyclic ring and are observed at wavelengths from 590 (tetramer in solution) to 700 nm (dimer in the solid state). Chirality dictates the differential absorption and emission of circularly polarized light by these molecules. The ECD and CPL effects are particularly strong for the trimer, which is characterized by relatively large dissymmetry factors gabs =±2.8×10-3 at 531 nm and glum =±2.3×10-3 at 580 nm in n-hexane, being at the same time highly luminescent (Φfl =13.7 %). Despite the small chromophore, the circularly polarized brightness BCPL of 2.3 dm3  mol-1  cm-1 is comparable to values reported for other classes of established CPL emitters in the visible region, such as expanded helicenes or larger π-conjugated systems.

Recent Progress in Research on [2.2]Paracyclophane-Based Dyes

In recent years, the [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) ring has attracted extensive attention due to its features of providing not only chirality and electron-donating ability but also steric hindrance, which reduces intermolecular π-π stacking interactions and thereby improves the fluorescence properties of dyes. To date, some circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active small organic molecules based on the PCP skeleton have been reviewed; however, the application of the PCP ring in improving the photophysical properties of fluorescent dyes is still limited, and new molecular design strategies are still required. This review summarizes and promotes the application of PCP in fluorescent dye design, fluorescence detection, and CPL modulation. We expect that this review will provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the PCP skeleton and lead to further improvement in fluorescent dye design.

Chiral H-aggregation-induced large stokes shift with CPL generation assisted by α-helical poly(L-lysine) substructure

Fluorescent materials with large Stokes shifts have significant potential for use in optical applications. Typically, a synthetic design strategy is utilized for this purpose. In this study, we demonstrated a novel method by binding a chiral template to a nonchiral fluorescent agent without chemical modification. Specifically, α-helical poly(L-lysine) was employed as the chiral template, which interacted with a disulfonic fluorescent dye, such as NK2751. The dye caused excimer luminescence by inducing the formation of a chirally H-aggregated dimer only when poly(L-lysine) was in an α-helical shape. The result was a Stokes shift of 230 nm. Similar effects were not observed when the chiral template was in a random coil condition and the Stokes shift was less than 40 nm. These findings imply that H-aggregated dimerization, which often results in quenching, permits the electronic transitions necessary for fluorescence events by the formation of the chirally twisted state. In addition, we introduce for the first time the generation of circularly polarized luminescence using the chirality induction phenomena in a dye supported by poly(L-lysine).

Planar Chiral Multiple Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials for Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

Chiral boron/nitrogen doped multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters are promising for highly efficient and color-pure circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Herein, we report two pairs of MR-TADF materials (Czp-tBuCzB, Czp-POAB) based on planar chiral paracyclophane with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 98 %. The enantiomers showed symmetric circularly polarized photoluminescence spectra with dissymmetry factors |g_PL | of up to 1.6×10^-3 in doped films. Meanwhile, the sky-blue CP-OLEDs with (R/S)-Czp-tBuCzB showed an external quantum efficiency of 32.1 % with the narrowest full-width at half-maximum of 24 nm among the reported CP-OLEDs, while the devices with (R/S)-Czp-POAB displayed the first nearly pure green CP electroluminescence with |g_EL | factors at the 10^-3 level. These results demonstrate the incorporation of planar chirality into MR-TADF emitter is a reliable strategy for constructing of efficient CP-OLEDs.

A pillar[5]arene-based planar chiral charge-transfer dye with enhanced circularly polarized luminescence and multiple responsive chiroptical changes

The fabrication of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) organic dyes based on macrocyclic architecture has become an importantly studied topic in recent years because it is of great importance to both chiral science and supramolecular chemistry, where pillar[n]arenes are emerging as a promising class of planar chiral macrocyclic hosts for CPL. We herein synthesized an unusual planar chiral charge-transfer dye (P5BB) by covalent coupling of triarylborane (Ar3B) as an electron acceptor to parent pillar[5]arene as an electron donor. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) nature of P5BB not only caused a thermally responsive emission but also boosted the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum). Interestingly, the specific binding of fluoride ions changed the photophysical properties of P5BB, including absorption, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD), and CPL, which could be exploited as an optical probe for multi-channel detection of fluoride ions. Furthermore, the chiroptical changes were observed upon addition of 1,4-dibromobutane as an achiral guest.

Di-2,7-pyrenidecaphyrin(1.1.0.0.0.1.1.0.0.0) and Its Bis-Organopalladium Complexes: Synthesis and Chiroptical Properties

A non-aromatic expanded carbaporphyrinoid, incorporating two built-in 2,7-pyrenylene moieties was synthesized. The intrinsically labile structure was demonstrated by proton-triggered conformational changes between the figure-of-eight and quasi-Möbius conformers. Upon treatment with Pd(OAc)₂ , the reaction produces two bis-Pd^II complexes with distinct coordination modes. Metal coordination serves to fix the macrocyclic frameworks with the net result that both bis-Pd^II complexes could be resolved by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a chiral stationary phase. The isolated enantiomers showed persistent chiroptical properties as evidenced by the intense response in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and the record high absorption dissymmetry factors (g_abs of up to 0.038) seen in the near-infrared spectral region. Moreover, the mutual interconversion of these two Pd^II complexes was found to be stereospecific and to favor the more stable isomers under weakly acidic conditions.

Synthesis of Two Novel Optically Active #-Shaped Cyclic Tetramers Based on Planar Chiral [2.2]Paracyclophanes

This study reports the synthesis of optically active cyclic tetramers comprising four stacked π-electron systems from two enantiomerically pure [2.2]paracyclophane compounds (bis-(para)-pseudo-ortho- and bis-(para)-pseudo-meta-tetrasubstituted [2.2]paracyclophane compounds). Depending on the combination of the absolute configurations of the planar chiral pseudo-ortho- and pseudo-meta-[2.2]paracyclophane units, the cyclic tetramers formed either parallel-#- or weave-#-structures. The optical and chiroptical properties of both structures were investigated experimentally and theoretically. In particular, the weave-#-shaped cyclic tetramer exhibited good chiroptical properties and emitted circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a high anisotropy factor (|g_lum | value of the order of 10^-3 ) and a CPL brightness (B_CPL ) higher than 100.

Vortex Flow-controlled Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Achiral Pt(II) Complex Aggregates Assembled at the Air-Water Interface

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been researched for various applications by control of characteristics such as chirality and magnitude. Supramolecular chirality has been prepared by vortex motion as a mechanical stimulus; however, CPL has yet to be controlled precisely and reproducibly. In this work, the first precise control of CPL under vortex flow conditions at an air-water interface is reported. The supramolecular chirality of aggregates consisting of an achiral trans-bis(salicylaldiminato)Pt(II) complex bearing hexadecyl chains is induced and controlled with vortex flow at the air-water interface, whereas the complex naturally forms an achiral amorphous solid with non-chiroptical properties under non-vortex conditions. The CPL direction and magnitude (g_lum value) of the Pt(II) complex aggregates can be adjusted precisely according to the vortex conditions, including the rotatory direction and flow rate. Vortex-flow-induced emission enhancement is also observed upon an increase in the rate of the vortex flow.

External environment sensitive circularly polarized luminescence properties of a chiral boron difluoride complex

A chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complex bearing a diethylamino group was synthesized. Its photophysical properties were investigated and compared with those of its non-substituted analogue. The complex was found to exhibit solvatofluorochromism with bluish-white emission in moderately polar solvents and intense blue emission in nonpolar solvent. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties were also examined and it was found that the absolute value of the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) increases significantly in the KBr-dispersed pellet state compared to the solution state. Notably, CPL intensity of the complex enhanced approximately three times upon addition of CH3SO3H in CH2Cl2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium-based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time-resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.

Intense Molar Circular Dichroism in Fully Conjugated All-Carbon Macrocyclic 1,3-Butadiyne Linked pseudo-meta [2.2]Paracyclophanes

The synthetic access to macrocyclic molecular topologies with interesting photophysical properties has greatly improved thanks to the successful implementation of organic and inorganic corner units. Based on recent reports, we realized that pseudo-meta [2.2]paracyclophanes (PCPs) might serve as optimal corner units for constructing 3D functional materials, owing to their efficient electronic communication, angled substituents and planar chirality. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization and optical properties of four novel all-carbon enantiopure macrocycles bearing three to six pseudo-meta PCPs linked by 1,3-butadiyne units. The macrocycles were obtained by a single step from enantiopure, literature-known dialkyne pseudo-meta PCP and were unambiguously identified and characterized by state of the art spectroscopic methods and in part even by x-ray crystallography. By comparing the optical properties to relevant reference compounds, it is shown that the pseudo-meta PCP subunit effectively elongates the conjugated system throughout the macrocyclic backbone, such that already the smallest macrocycle consisting of only three subunits reaches a polymer-like conjugation length. Additionally, it is shown that the chiral pseudo-meta PCPs induce a remarkable chiroptical response in the respective macrocycles, reaching unprecedented high molar circular dichroism values for all-carbon macrocycles of up to 1307 L mol-1  cm-1 .

Effect of Oxidation on the Chiroptical Properties of Sulfur-Bridged Binaphthyl Dimers

A series of axially chiral sulfur-bridged dimers were prepared from 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol and subsequently oxidized to the respective sulfones. The chiroptical properties of the chiral chromophores were studied as a function of the oxidation state. Upon oxidation, an increase in quantum yields was observed for directly linked sulfur bridged binaphthyls (0.04 to 0.32), and a modest increase in dissymmetry factor was observed for diphenylsulfide-bridged binaphthyls (-8.9 × 10^-4 to -1.4 × 10^-3). Computational calculations were used to elucidate the changes in photophysical properties.

Highly Fluorescent Bipyrrole-Based Tetra-BF2 Flag-Hinge Chromophores: Achieving Multicolor and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This study reports the facile syntheses of tetra-boron difluoride (tetra-BF₂ ) complexes, flag-hinge-like molecules that exhibit intense green-to-orange luminescence in solution and yellow-to-red emission in the solid states. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations suggested a bent structure of this series of compounds. The complexes also exhibited excellent optical properties, with quantum yields reaching 100 % and a large Stokes shift. These properties were attributed to the altered bending angle of the molecule in the S₁ excited state. As the rotational motion was suppressed around the 2,2'-bipyrrole axis, atropisomers with axial chirality were formed, which are optically resolvable into (R) and (S)-enantiomers through a chiral column. The atropisomers thus function as circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, in which the color (green, green-yellow, and yellow) can be varied by controlling the aggregation state. This rational design of multi-BF₂ complexes can potentially realize novel photofunctional materials.

Multi-colour circularly polarized luminescence properties of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes

A series of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes was synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. These complexes showed multi-colour (blue, yellow and red) photoluminescence in solution and in the solid state with good emission quantum yield (Φ) depending on the π-systems of the ligands. The chiral complexes exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with an absolute luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) of up to the 1.3 × 10^-3 in solution and 1.9 × 10^-2 in the drop-cast film state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence Performance by a Double π-Helix and Heteroannulation

Design challenges in the development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are focused on balancing the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ_PL) by regulating the electric (μ) and magnetic (m) transition dipole moment vectors. Aiming at designing efficient CPL emitters and clarifying the chiroptical variation mechanism, herein, we present a double π-helix based on a cyclooctatetraene-embedded perylene diimide dimer that combines chirality with molecular entanglement and very high barriers for racemization. Through finely regulating the magnitudes of μ and m, the maximal dissymmetry factors |g_abs| and |g_lum| can be boosted to 0.035 and 0.030, respectively, as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) and CPL spectra. The results indicate a 3-fold improvement of g values and a modulated Φ_PL from 1a, 4, to 5 by nitrogen heteroannulation at the bay region. The CPL brightness (B_CPL) of 5 reaches a recorded value of up to 573.4 M^-1 cm^-1, among the highest values of chiral small molecules reported so far. This work has provided a comprehensive insight into a new class of chiral materials with high CPL activities, further laying molecular fundamentals for chiral optoelectronics.

Fluorescent cyclophanes and their applications

With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Synthesis of Twisted Anthracenes: Induction of Twist Chirality by the Planar Chiral [2.2]Paracyclophane

Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane was employed as chiral scaffolds to twist an anthracene ring by tethering at its 1- and 8positions; thus, twist chirality was induced in the anthracene moiety. The chiroptical properties of the resulting molecule, including circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), were found to be derived from the twist chirality. An analogous molecule bearing long alkyl chains was a viscous liquid, and its liquid film exhibited good CD and CPL profiles. The theoretical studies are carried out to determine the origin of these properties in the ground and excited states, which reproduced well the experimental results.
