B,N-Embedded Double Hetero[7]helicenes with Strong Chiroptical Responses in the Visible Light Region

Multiple-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials based on phosphorus central chirality for efficient circularly polarized electroluminescence

Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) hold great potential for naked-eye 3D displays, necessitating efficient chiral luminescent materials with an optimal CP luminescence (CPL) dissymmetry factor (g). Herein, we present the first chiral multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials containing a phosphorus chiral center by incorporating 5-phenylbenzo[b]phosphindole-5-oxide into the para-position of two MR-TADF cores. The compounds, NBOPO and NBNPO, exhibit photoluminescence peaks at 462 and 498 nm with narrow full-width at half-maximum values of 25 and 24 nm in toluene, respectively. Notably, (R/S)-NBOPO and (R/S)-NBNPO enantiomers display high quantum yields of 87% and 93% and symmetric CPL with |gPL| factors of 1.18 × 10-3 and 4.30 × 10-3, respectively, in doped films. Moreover, the corresponding CP-OLEDs show impressive external quantum efficiencies of 16.4% and 28.3%, along with symmetric CP electroluminescence spectra with |gEL| values of 7.0 × 10-4 and 1.4 × 10-3, respectively.

Polycationic Open-Shell Cyclophanes: Synthesis of Electron-Rich Chiral Macrocycles, and Redox-Dependent Electronic States

π-Conjugated chiral nanorings with intriguing electronic structures and chiroptical properties have attracted considerable interests in synthetic chemistry and materials science. We present the design principles to access new chiral macrocycles (1 and 2) that are essentially built on the key components of main-group electron-donating carbazolyl moieties or the π-expanded aza[7]helicenes. Both macrocycles show the unique molecular conformations with a (quasi) figure-of-eight topology as a result of the conjugation patterns of 2,2',7,7'-spirobifluorenyl in 1 and triarylamine-coupled aza[7]helicene-based building blocks in 2. This electronic nature of redox-active, carbazole-rich backbones enabled these macrocycles to be readily oxidized chemically and electrochemically, leading to the sequential production of a series of positively charged polycationic open-shell cyclophanes. Their redox-dependent electronic states of the resulting multispin polyradicals have been characterized by VT-ESR, UV/Vis-NIR absorption and spectroelectrochemical measurements. The singlet (ΔES-T=-1.29 kcal mol-1) and a nearly degenerate singlet-triplet ground state (ΔES-T(calcd)=-0.15 kcal mol-1 and ΔES-T(exp)=0.01 kcal mol-1) were proved for diradical dications 12+2⋅ and 22+2⋅, respectively. Our work provides an experimental proof for the construction of electron-donating new chiral nanorings, and more importantly for highly charged polyradicals with potential applications in chirospintronics and organic conductors.

Nonalternant Nanographenes Containing N-Centered Cyclopenta[ef]heptalene and Aza[7]Helicene Units

Introducing helical subunits into negatively curved π-systems has a significant effect on both the molecular geometry and photophysical properties; however, the synthesis of these helical π-systems embedded with nonbenzenoid subunits remains challenging due to the high strain deriving from both the curvature and helix. Here, we report a family of nonalternant nanographenes containing a nitrogen (N)-doped cyclopenta[ef]heptalene unit. Among them, CPH-2 and CPH-3 can be viewed as hybrids of benzoannulated cyclopenta[ef]heptalene and aza[7]helicene. The crystal structures revealed a saddle geometry for CPH-1, a saddle-helix hybrid for CPH-2, and a twist-helix hybrid for CPH-3. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations indicate that the saddle moieties in CPHs undergo flexible conformational changes at room temperature, while the aza[7]helicene subunit exhibits a dramatically increased racemization energy barrier (78.2 kcal mol-1 for CPH-2, 143.2 kcal mol-1 for CPH-3). The combination of the nitrogen lone electron pairs of the N-doped cyclopenta[ef]heptalene unit with the twisted helix fragments results in rich photophysics with distinctive fluorescence and phosphorescence in CPH-1 and CPH-2 and the similar energy fluorescence and phosphorescence in CPH-3. Both enantiopure CPH-2 and CPH-3 display distinct circular dichroism (CD) signals in the UV-vis range. Notably, compared to the reported fully π-extended helical nanographenes, CPH-3 exhibits excellent chiroptical properties with a |gabs| value of 1.0 × 10-2 and a |glum| value of 7.0 × 10-3; these values are among the highest for helical nanographenes.

Supramolecular Polymerization as a Tool to Reveal the Magnetic Transition Dipole Moment of Heptazines

Heptazine derivatives have attracted significant interest due to their small S1-T1 gap, which contributes to their unique electronic and optical properties. However, the nature of the lowest excited state remains ambiguous. In the present study, we characterize the lowest optical transition of heptazine by its magnetic transition dipole moment. To measure the magnetic transition dipole moment, the flat heptazine must be chiroptically active, which is difficult to achieve for single heptazine molecules. Therefore, we used supramolecular polymerization as an approach to make homochiral stacks of heptazine derivatives. Upon formation of the supramolecular polymers, the preferred helical stacking of heptazine introduces circular polarization of absorption and fluorescence. The magnetic transition dipole moments for the S1 ← S0 and S1 → S0 are determined to be 0.35 and 0.36 Bohr magneton, respectively. These high values of magnetic transition dipole moments support the intramolecular charge transfer nature of the lowest excited state from nitrogen to carbon in heptazine and further confirm the degeneracy of S1 and T1.

Mineral acid-triggered multicolor room-temperature phosphorescence nanoprobes for time-resolved bioimaging

We present a facile strategy to achieve color-tunability room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) nanoprobes by doping mineral acids (i.e., boric acid and phosphoric acid) in an organic silicon scaffold through a cross-linking process. Such RTP nanoprobes exhibit inherent tunable phosphorescence (from 420-650 nm) with long lifetime (emission lasting for ∼5-15 s, RTP lifetime: ∼0.53-2.11 s) and high quantum yields (∼13.1-43.0%). Therefore, the as-prepared nanoprobes enable multiple imaging in live cells with a high signal-to-background ratio value of ∼52.

Synthesis of sterically congested double helicene by alkyne cycloisomerization

Alkyne cycloisomerization of 2,7,10,15-tetra(ortho-alkynylphenyl)benzo[g,p]chrysene containing bulky 4-alkoxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl groups at the alkyne terminals selectively proceeded at the sterically crowded bay-region. The obtained double helicene adopts a distorted structure with a high racemization barrier due to the intramolecular steric repulsion.

Enhanced Horizontal Dipole Orientation by Novel Penta-Helicene Anthracene-Based Host for Efficient Blue Fluorescent OLEDs

Due to the relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and horizontal dipole orientation of doped films, anthracene-based fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (F-OLEDs) have faced a great challenge to achieve high external quantum efficiency (EQE). Herein, a novel approach is introduced by incorporating penta-helicene into anthracene, presented as linear-shaped 3-(4-(10-phenylanthracen-9-yl)phenyl)dibenzo[c,g]phenanthrene (BABH) and 3-(4-(10-(naphthalen-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl)phenyl)dibenzo[c,g]phenanthrene (NABH). These blue hosts exhibit minimal intermolecular overlap of π-π stacking, effectively suppressing excimer formation, which facilitates the effective transfer of singlet energy to the fluorescent dopant for PLQY as high as 90%. Additionally, the as-obtained two hosts of BABH and NABH have effectively demonstrated major horizontal components transition dipole moments (TDM) and high thermal stability with glass transitional temperature (Tg) surpassing 188 °C, enhancing the horizontal dipole orientation of their doped films to be 89% and 93%, respectively. The OLEDs based on BABH and NABH exhibit excellent EQE of 10.5% and 12.4% at 462 nm and device lifetime up to 90% of the initial luminance over 4500 h at 100 cd m-2, which has firmly established them as among the most efficient blue F-OLEDs based on anthracene to date to the best knowledge. This work provides an instructive strategy to design an effective host for highly efficient and stable F-OLEDs.

Simultaneous discovery of chiral and achiral dyes: elucidating the optical functions of helical and flag-hinged boron tetradentate complexes

The construction of novel complexes can lead to the manifestation of unexpected structures and properties, thereby making chemical exploration in experiments a potential source for novel discoveries. In this study, by reacting 6,6'-dihydrazineyl-2,2'-bipyridine with acyl chlorides and subsequently coordinating with boron trifluoride, two different boron-tetradentate ligand complexes were simultaneously generated. One of these complexes exhibited a unique structure in which tetra-BF2 moieties coordinated to all four coordination sites of the ligand molecule, forming a flag-hinged structure around the bipyridine part. The second complex featured a helical structure formed by the hybridization of two BF2 and one B-O-B moieties, representing a highly unusual form of the complex. The structures of these two boron complexes were consistently observed when various substituted acyl chlorides were employed. Furthermore, it was found that enhancing electron-donor properties could induce a redshift in emissions. Utilizing the dimethylamino group as the proton receptor promoted a yellow-to-blue fluorescence switch in the tetra-BF2 complex and an OFF/ON fluorescence in the B-O-B bridged complex upon protonation. The helical chirality observed in the latter complex resulted in stable (P)/(M)-enantiomers after optical resolution. This complex exhibited circular dichroism with a |gabs| of up to 1.2 × 10-2 and circularly polarized luminescence with a |glum| on the order of 10-3 in solution and polymer film.

Tetraborated Intrinsically Axial Chiral Multi-resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

Chiral multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-MR-TADF) materials hold promise for circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) and 3D displays. Herein, we present two pairs of tetraborated intrinsically axial CP-MR-TADF materials, R/S-BDBF-BOH and R/S-BDBT-BOH, with conjugation-extended bidibenzo[b,d]furan and bidibenzo[b,d]thiophene as chiral sources, which effectively participate in the distribution of the frontier molecular orbitals. Due to the heavy-atom effect, sulfur atoms are introduced to accelerate the reverse intersystem crossing process and increase the efficiency of molecules. R/S-BDBF-BOH and R/S-BDBT-BOH manifest ultra-pure blue emission with a maximum at 458/459 nm with a full width at half maximum of 27 nm, photoluminescence quantum yields of 90 %/91 %, and dissymmetry factors (|gPL|) of 6.8×10-4/8.5×10-4, respectively. Correspondingly, the CP-OLEDs exhibit good performances with an external quantum efficiency of 30.1 % and |gEL| factors of 1.2×10-3.

Boron-containing helicenes as new generation of chiral materials: opportunities and challenges of leaving the flatland

Increased interest in chiral functional dyes has stimulated activity in the field of boron-containing helicenes over the past few years. Despite the fact that the introduction of boron endows π-conjugated scaffolds with attractive electronic and optical properties, boron helicenes have long remained underdeveloped compared to other helicenes containing main group elements. The main reason was the lack of reliable synthetic protocols to access these scaffolds. The construction of boron helicenes proceeds against steric strain, and thus the methods developed for planar systems have sometimes proven ineffective in their synthesis. Recent advances in the general boron chemistry and the synthesis of strained derivatives have opened the way to a wide variety of boron-containing helicenes. Although the number of helically chiral derivatives is still limited, these compounds are currently at the forefront of emissive materials for circularly-polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Yet the design of good emitters is not a trivial task. In this perspective, we discuss a number of requirements that must be met to provide an excellent emissive material. These include chemical and configurational stability, emission quantum yields, luminescence dissymmetry factors, and color purity. Understanding of these parameters and some structure-property relationships should aid in the rational design of superior boron helicenes. We also present the main achievements in their synthesis and point out niches in this area, e.g. stereoselective synthesis, necessary to accelerate the development of this fascinating class of compounds and to realize their potential in OLED devices and in other fields.

Cyclic Azahelicene Dimers Showing Bright Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Selective Fluoride Recognition

Although helicenes are promising molecules, the synthetic difficulty and tediousness have often been problems, and only small amounts of optically pure helicenes have been obtained by using chiral HPLC in most cases. Herein, aza[7]helicenes or closed-aza[7]helicenes with (1R)-menthyl substituents were selectively synthesized via the intramolecular Scholl reaction, and the diastereomeric pairs were separated by silica gel column chromatography. The optically pure helicenes were further transformed into the corresponding cyclic dimers, and the chiroptical properties were investigated. The rigid π-frameworks of the dimers led to the high molar extinction coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields, while the twisted helicene moieties induced clear Cotton effects and CPL in the visible region, and the high CPL brightness (BCPL) was achieved. Furthermore, the cyclic dimers were found to have the macrocyclic cavity with the two NH groups suitable for the selective binding of a fluoride anion, which induced significantly redshifted fluorescence and CPL in the red region.

Recent Advances of Chiral Isolated and Small Organic Molecules: Structure and Properties for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This paper explores recent advancements in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibited by small and isolated organic molecules. The development and application of small CPL molecule are systematically reviewed through eight different chiral skeleton sections. Investigating the intricate interplay between molecular structure and CPL properties, the paper aims at providing and enlighting novel strategies for CPL-based applications.

Impact of helical elongation of symmetric oxa[n]helicenes on their structural, photophysical, and chiroptical characteristics

The adjustment of the main helical scaffold in helicenes is a fundamental strategy for modulating their optical features, thereby enhancing their potential for diverse applications. This work explores the influence of helical elongation (n = 5-9) on the structural, photophysical, and chiroptical features of symmetric oxa[n]helicenes. Crystal structure analyses revealed structural variations with helical extension, impacting torsion angles, helical pitch, and packing arrangements. Through theoretical investigations using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the impact of helical extension on aromaticity, planarity distortion, and heightened chiral stability were discussed. Photophysical features were studied through spectrophotometric analysis, with insights gained through time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. Following optical resolution via chiral high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the chiroptical properties of both enantiomers of oxa[7]helicene and oxa[9]helicene were investigated. A slight variation in the main helical scaffold of oxa[n]helicenes from [7] to [9] induced an approximately three-fold increase in dissymmetry factors with the biggest values of|glum| of oxa[9]helicene (2.2 × 10-3) compared to|glum|of oxa[7]helicene (0.8 × 10-3), findings discussed and supported by TD-DFT calculations.

Tethered Helical Ladder-Type Aromatic Lactams

Tethered nonplanar aromatics (TNAs) make up an important class of nonplanar aromatic compounds showing unique features. However, the knowledge on the synthesis, structures, and properties of TNAs remains insufficient. In this work, a new type of TNAs, the tethered aromatic lactams, is synthesized via Pd-catalyzed consecutive intramolecular direct arylations. These molecules possess a helical ladder-type conjugated system of up to 13 fused rings. The overall yields ranged from 3.4 to 4.3%. The largest of the tethered aromatic lactams, 6L-Bu-C14, demonstrates a guest-adaptive hosting capability of TNAs for the first time. When binding fullerene guests, the cavity of 6L-Bu-C14 became more circular to better accommodate spherical fullerene molecules. The host-guest interaction is thoroughly studied by X-ray crystallography, theoretical calculations, fluorescence titration, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titration experiments. 6L-Bu-C14 shows stronger binding with C70 than with C60 due to the better convex-concave π-π interaction. P and M enantiomers of all tethered aromatic lactams show distinct and persistent chiroptical properties and demonstrate the potential of chiral TNAs as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters.

B,N-Embedded Hetero[9]helicene Toward Highly Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

The intrinsic helical π-conjugated skeleton makes helicenes highly promising for circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL). Generally, carbon helicenes undergo low external quantum efficiency (EQE), while the incorporation of a multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) BN structure has led to an improvement. However, the reported B,N-embedded helicenes all show low electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL), typically around 1×10-3. Therefore, the development of B,N-embedded helicenes with both a high EQE and gEL value is crucial for achieving highly efficient CPEL. Herein, a facile approach to synthesize B,N-embedded hetero[9]helicenes, BN[9]H, is presented. BN[9]H shows a bright photoluminescence with a maximum at 578 nm with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum|) up to 5.8×10-3, attributed to its inherited MR-TADF property and intrinsic helical skeleton. Furthermore, circularly polarized OLED devices incorporating BN[9]H as an emitter show a maximum EQE of 35.5 %, a small full width at half-maximum of 48 nm, and, more importantly, a high |gEL| value of 6.2×10-3. The Q-factor (|EQE×gEL|) of CP-OLEDs is determined to be 2.2×10-3, which is the highest among helicene analogues. This work provides a new approach for the synthesis of higher helicenes and paves a new way for the construction of highly efficient CPEL materials.

S-Shaped Helical Singlet Diradicaloid and Its Transformation to Circumchrysene via a Two-Stage Cyclization

Polycyclic hydrocarbons with diradical and polyradical characters usually display unique reactivities in ring-cyclization reactions. However, such reactions are rarely used to construct π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Here, we describe the synthesis of an S-shaped doubly helical singlet diradicaloid compound and its facile transformation into an unprecedented circumchrysene via a two-stage ring cyclization, which includes: (1) an eletrocylization from diradicaloid precursor and (2) a Scholl reaction. The reaction mechanism was investigated through in situ spectroscopic studies, assisted by theoretical calculations. This reaction sequence yields an optically resolved π-extended [5]helicene derivative with a fluorescence quantum yield up to 85% and a circularly polarized luminescence brightness up to 6.05 M-1 cm-1 in the far-red to near-infrared regions. This sequence also yielded a highly delocalized circumchrysene molecule, exhibiting large electron delocalization, moderate fluorescence quantum yield, and multistage redox properties.

Handedness-Inverted and Stimuli-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nano/Micromaterials Through Pathway-Dependent Chiral Supramolecular Polymorphism

The precise manipulation of supramolecular polymorphs has been widely applied to control the morphologies and functions of self-assemblies, but is rarely utilized for the fabrication of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with tailored properties. Here, this work reports that an amphiphilic naphthalene-histidine compound (NIHis) readily self-assembled into distinct chiral nanostructures through pathway-dependent supramolecular polymorphism, which shows opposite and multistimuli responsive CPL signals. Specifically, NIHis display assembly-induced CPL from the polymorphic keto tautomer, which become predominant during enol-keto tautomerization shifting controlled by a bulk solvent effect. Interestingly, chiral polymorphs of nanofiber and microbelt with inverted CPL signals can be prepared from the same NIHis monomer in exactly the same solvent compositions and concentrations by only changing the temperature. The tunable CPL performance of the solid microbelts is realized under multi external physical or chemical stimuli including grinding, acid fuming, and heating. In particular, an emission color and CPL on-off switch based on the microbelt polymorph by reversible heating-cooling protocol is developed. This work brings a new approach for developing smart CPL materials via supramolecular polymorphism engineering.

Pyrrole βC-B-N Fused Porphyrins: Molecular Structures and Opto-Electrochemical Studies

Herein, we report the design, synthesis, structure, and electrochemical study of doubly βC-B-N fused Ni(II) porphyrins (1-trans, 1-cis, 2-trans, and 2-cis). These compounds have been synthesized from A2B2 type dipyridyl Ni(II) porphyrins (Ar=Ph for 1 a; Ar=C6F5 for 2 a) via Lewis base-directed electrophilic aromatic borylation reactions. The solution state structures of these compounds have been established using 1H NMR, 11B NMR, 1H-1H COSY, 1H-13C HSQC, and 19F-13C HSQC NMR techniques. Single crystal X-ray analysis have revealed that 1-trans, 1-cis, and 2-trans adopt ruffled conformations, with alternate meso-carbons on the opposite sides of the mean porphyrin plane. The Soret bands in the absorption spectra of the B-N fused molecules are ~40 nm redshifted compared to unfused Ni(II) porphyrin precursors. The B-N fusion have diminished the redox potential of fused porphyrins. Although 1-trans and 1-cis, show four oxidation processes, 2-trans and 2-cis show only three oxidation processes. DFT studies have revealed that the tetrahedral geometry of the boron has induced a twist in the π-conjugation, which destabilizes the HOMO and stabilizes the LUMO in 1-trans, 1-cis, 2-trans, and 2-cis.

Coumarin-embedded [5]helicene derivatives: synthesis, X-ray analysis and photoconducting properties

Two novel coumarin-embedded π-extended [5]helicene derivatives (3a and 6a) have been strategically synthesized and characterized, and the structure of 3a was determined via single crystal X-ray analysis. Both of them exhibit green fluorescence in dichloromethane. In addition, molecule 3a can aggregate to form a large quantity of nanowires through the re-precipitation method. More importantly, the photoelectric conversion properties of 3a nanowire-C60 based films are much better than those of the thin film of bulk 3a-C60, indicating that the ordered nanostructures are a crucial factor for enhancing device performance.

Highly Luminescent Chiral Double π-Helical Nanoribbons

Unveiling the mechanism behind chirality propagation and dissymmetry amplification at the molecular level is of significance for the development of chiral systems with comprehensively outstanding chiroptical performances. Herein, we have presented a straightforward Cu-mediated Ullmann homocoupling approach to synthesize perylene diimide-entwined double π-helical nanoribbons encompassing dimer, trimer, and tetramer while producing homochiral or heterochiral linking of chiral centers. A significant dissymmetry amplification was achieved, with absorption dissymmetry factors (|gabs|) increasing from 0.009 to 0.017 and further to 0.019, and luminescence dissymmetry factors (|glum|) rising from 0.007 to 0.013 and eventually to 0.015 for homochiral double π-helical oligomers. The disparity of magnetic transition dipole moment (m) densities in homochiral and heterochiral tetramers by time-dependent density functional theory calculations confirmed that homochiral oligomerization can maximize the total m, which is favorable for achieving ever-increasing g factors. Notably, these double π-helices exhibited exceptional photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL) ranging from 83 to 95%. The circularly polarized luminescence brightness (BCPL) eventually reached a remarkable 575 M-1 cm-1 for the homochiral tetramer, which is among the highest values reported for chiral small molecules. This kind of linearly extended double π-helices offers a platform for a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism behind chirality propagation and dissymmetry amplification.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Schiff-base [4]Helicene Boron Complexes

Boron complexes with Schiff-base [4]helicene ligands were synthesized. These complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and their helical molecular structures were unequivocally established by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The helical boron complexes exhibited efficient photoluminescence under UV irradiation, and the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties were investigated for optically pure samples. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to further understand their photophysical properties including chiroptical responses.

The enhancement of nonlinear optical properties of azulene-based nanographene by N atoms: a finishing touch

Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials play an increasingly important role in optoelectronic devices, biomedicine, micro-nano processing, and other fields. The development of organic materials with strong second or (and) third NLO properties and a high stability is still challenging due to the unknown strategies for obtaining enhanced high order NLO properties. In the present work, π-conjugated systems are constructed by doping boron or (and) nitrogen atoms in the azulene moiety of azulene-based nanographenes (formed with an azulene chain with two bridging HCCHs at the two sides of the connecting CC bonds between azulenes, A1A2A3), and the NLO properties are predicted with time-dependent density functional theory based methods and a sum-over-states model. The doping of heteroatoms induces charge redistribution, tunes the frontier molecular orbital energy gap, changes the composition of some frontier molecular orbitals, and affects the NLO properties of those nanographenes. Among the designed nanographenes, the azulene-based nanographene with two nitrogen atoms at the two ends has the largest static first hyperpolarizability (91.30 × 10-30 esu per heavy atom), and the further introduction of two N atoms at the two ends of the central azulene moiety of this nanographene results in a large static second hyperpolarizability while keeping the large static first hyperpolarizability.

Organoboron-based multiple-resonance emitters: synthesis, structure-property correlations, and prospects

Boron-based multiple-resonance (MR) emitters exhibit the advantages of narrowband emission, high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and sufficient stability during the operation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Thus, such MR emitters have been widely applied as blue emitters in triplet-triplet-annihilation-driven fluorescent devices used in smartphones and televisions. Moreover, they hold great promise as TADF or terminal emitters in TADF-assisted fluorescence or phosphor-sensitised fluorescent OLEDs. Herein we comprehensively review organoboron-based MR emitters based on their synthetic strategies, clarify structure-photophysical property correlations, and provide design guidelines and future development prospects.

B-N Covalent Bond Embedded Double Hetero-[n]helicenes for Pure Red Narrowband Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence with High Efficiency and Stability

Chiral B/N embedded multi-resonance (MR) emitters open a new paradigm of circularly polarized (CP) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) owing to their unique narrowband spectra. However, pure-red CP-MR emitters and devices remain exclusive in literature. Herein, by introducing a B-N covalent bond to lower the electron-withdrawing ability of the para-positioned B-π-B motif, the first pair of pure-red double hetero-[n]helicenes (n = 6 and 7) CP-MR emitter peaking 617 nm with a small full-width at half-maximum of 38 nm and a high photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈100% in toluene is developed. The intense mirror-image CP light produced by the enantiomers is characterized by high photoluminescence dissymmetry factors (gPL ) of +1.40/-1.41 × 10-3 from their stable helicenes configuration. The corresponding devices using these enantiomers afford impressive CP electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL ) of +1.91/-1.77 × 10-3 , maximum external quantum efficiencies of 36.6%/34.4% and Commission Internationale de I'Éclairage coordinates of (0.67, 0.33), exactly satisfying the red-color requirement specified by National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) standard. Notably a remarkable long LT95 (operational time to 95% of the initial luminance) of ≈400 h at an initial brightness of 10,000 cd m-2 is also observed for the same device, representing the most stable CP-OLED up to date.

Straightforward Synthesis of Pentagon-Embedded Expanded [11]Helicenes for Radiative Cooling Property

Two new pentagon-embedded carbo[11]helicenes have been designed and synthesized in a three-step process, which are the first example of carbo[11]helicenes through the post-functionalization of twistacene. TD-DFT analyses indicate that both of them possess high enantiomerization barriers of 42.29 kcal/mol and 40.76 kcal/mol, respectively. They emit strong red fluorescence and can be chemically oxidized into stable cationic radicals upon addition of AgSbF6 evidenced by the bathochromic-shifted absorption spectra and the appearance of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals. In addition, such helical derivatives can be chosen as radiative cooling materials in a glass model house, and the maxima of 5.4 °C for the former and 6.5 °C for the latter are found in the comparative tests, which might be caused by the NIR reflective response.

Boosting quantum yields and circularly polarized luminescence of penta- and hexahelicenes by doping with two BN-groups

The incorporation of boron-nitrogen (BN) units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an isoelectronic replacement of two carbon atoms can significantly improve their optical properties, while the geometries are mostly retained. We report the first non-π-extended penta- and hexahelicenes comprising two aromatic 1,2-azaborinine rings. Comparing them with their all-carbon analogs regarding structural, spectral and (chir)optical properties allowed us to quantify the impact of the heteroatoms. In particular, BN-hexahelicene BN[6] exhibited a crystal structure congruent with its analog CC[6], but displayed a fivefold higher fluorescence quantum yield (φfl = 0.17) and an outstanding luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum| = 1.33 × 10-2). Such an unusual magnification of both properties at the same time makes BN-helicenes suitable candidates as circularly polarized luminescence emitters for applications in materials science.

Deep-Blue Narrowband Hetero[6]helicenes Showing Circularly Polarized Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Toward High-Performance OLEDs

Helicenes exhibit substantial potential as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecules. However, their application in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) is typically hindered by the challenge of integrating both high color purity and efficient triplet-harvesting capability, particularly in the blue spectral region. Herein, a series of hetero[6]helicene-based emitters that is strategically engineered through the helical extension of a deep-blue double-boron-based multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) motif, is introduced. Importantly, the helical extension does not cause apparent structural deformation or perturb frontier molecular orbitals; thus, preserving the deep-blue emission and MR-TADF characteristics of the parent molecule. This approach also leads to reduced reorganization energy, resulting in emitters with narrower linewidth and higher photoluminescence quantum yield. Further, the helical motif enhances the racemization barrier and leads to improved CPL performance with luminescence dissymmetry factor values up to 1.5 × 10-3 . Exploiting these merits, devices incorporating the chiral dopants demonstrate deep-blue emission within the Broadcast Service Television 2020 color-gamut range, record external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) up to 29.3%, and have distinctive circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) signals. Overall, the authors' findings underscore the helical extension as a promising strategy for designing narrowband chiroptical materials and advancing high-definition displays.

Frontier Molecular Orbital Engineering: Constructing Highly Efficient Narrowband Organic Electroluminescent Materials

It is of great strategic significance to develop highly efficient narrowband organic electroluminescent materials that can be utilized to manufacture ultra-high-definition (UHD) displays and meet or approach the requirements of Broadcast Television 2020 (B.T.2020) color gamut standards. This motif poses challenges for molecular design and synthesis, especially for developing generality, diversity, scalability, and robustness of molecular structures. The emergence of multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters has ingeniously solved the problems and demonstrated bright application prospects in the field of UHD displays, sparking a research boom. This Minireview summarizes the research endeavors of narrowband organic electroluminescent materials, with emphasis on the tremendous contribution of frontier molecular orbital engineering (FMOE) strategy. It combines the outstanding advantages of MR framework and donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, and can achieve red-shift and narrowband emission simultaneously, which is of great significance in the development of long-wavelength narrowband emitters with emission maxima especially exceeding 500 nm. We hope that this Minireview would provide some inspiration for what could transpire in the future.

Synthesis of Nonsymmetric NBN-Embedded [6]- and [7]Helicenes with Amplified Activities

Two C1-symmetric heterohelicenes were constructed by nonsymmetrically extending the ortho-fused structures of a C2v-symmetric NBN-embedded phenalene derivative and featured intense luminescence, large Stokes shifts, and successive reversible redox behaviors. Increasing one fused phenyl unit in such a helical structure led to a 10-fold-enhanced dissymmetry factor. Their strong double hydrogen-bond-donating capability makes them distinctly red-shifted in absorption, emission, and CD and CPL spectra upon the addition of fluoride anion.

Chiral Luminescent Aza[7]helicenes Functionalized with a Triarylborane Acceptor and Near-Infrared-Emissive Doublet-State Radicals

This paper presents new chiral luminescent molecules (N7-BMes2 and N7-TTM) using configurationally stable aza[7]helicene (1) as a universal heteroatom-doped chiral scaffold. The respective reactions of electron-donating 1 with a triarylborane acceptor via palladium-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig C-N coupling and with the open-shell doublet-state TTM radical via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SN2Ar) resulted not only in tunable emissions from blue to the NIR domain but also in significantly enhanced emission quantum efficiency up to Φ = 50%.

Constructing Highly Efficient Circularly Polarized Multiple-Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials with Intrinsically Helical Chirality

Advanced circularly polarized multiple-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-MR-TADF) materials synergize the advantages of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), narrowband emission, and the TADF characteristic, which can be fabricated into highly efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) with high color purity, directly facing the urgent market strategic demand of ultrahigh-definition and 3D displays. In this work, based on an edge-topology molecular-engineering (ETME) strategy, a pair of high-performance CP-MR-TADF enantiomers, (P and M)-BN-Py, is developed, which merges the intrinsically helical chirality into the MR framework. The optimized CP-OLEDs with (P and M)-BN-Py emitters and the newly developed ambipolar transport host PhCbBCz exhibit pure green emission with sharp peaks of 532 nm, full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 37 nm, and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.29, 0.68). Importantly, they achieve remarkable maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 30.6% and 29.2%, and clear circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) signals with electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL s) of -4.37 × 10-4 and +4.35 × 10-4 for (P)-BN-Py and (M)-BN-Py, respectively.

RGB Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes toward Realizing the BT.2020 Standard

With the surging demand for ultra-high-resolution displays, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announce the next-generation color gamut standard, named ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020, which not only sets a seductive but challenging milestone for display technologies but also urges researchers to recognize the importance of color coordinates. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are an important display technology in current daily life, but they face challenges in approaching the BT.2020 standard. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have bright prospects in OLEDs because they possess 100% theoretical exciton utilization. Thus, the development of TADF emitters emitting primary red (R), green (R), and blue (B) emission is of great significance. Here, a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in TADF emitters that exhibit Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates surpassing the National Television System Committee (NTSC) and approaching BT.2020 standards is presented. Rational strategies for molecular designs, as well as the resulting photophysical properties and OLED performances, are discussed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for shifting the CIE coordinates of both donor-acceptor and multiple resonance (MR) typed TADF emitters toward the BT.2020 standard. Finally, the challenges in realization of the wide-color-gamut BT.2020 standard and the prospects for this research area are provided.

Asymmetric Synthesis of Tetraphenylethylene Helicates and Their Full-Color CPL Emission with High glum and High Fluorescence Quantum Yield

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) helicates with single helical handedness not only owe high fluorescence quantum yield but also possess good helical chirality, showing an excellent circularly polarized luminescence active material. In this work, a new method for directly obtaining single-handed TPE helicates has been developed. By using chiral p-phenylenediamine derivatives as an intramolecular cyclization reagent of TPE, the single-handed propeller-like conformation and stable helical chirality of the TPE unit were obtained, avoiding complicated and expensive HPLC chiral column separation. The as-prepared chiral TPE helicates displayed strong emission with an almost quantitative fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) and strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In addition, the chirality and CPL signals of the TPE helicates could be significantly magnified by the helical arrangement together with 4'-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB) liquid crystal molecules. Moreover, full-color CPL emissions with both a high absolute CPL dissymmetrical factor up to 0.43 and high Φf were afforded.

Precisely regulating the double-boron-based multi-resonance framework towards pure-red emitters: high-performance OLEDs with CIE coordinates fully satisfying the BT. 2020 standard

Here, we propose a new simple and effective strategy for designing pure-red multi-resonance (MR) emitters through precisely regulating the double-boron-based MR framework. The two designed emitters exhibit ultrapure red emission together with superb photophysical properties, and further enable high-performance, high color-purity red OLEDs.

Chiral B-N AIEgens: Intense Blue Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Piezochromism

We present a new class of blue circularly polarized luminescent emitters based on tetraarylaminoborane (TAAB) with considerable dissymmetry factor in the solid state. The chiral pendant 1-phenylethylamine in BN-RR and BN-SS imparts chirality to the core chromophore, resulting in circularly polarized luminescence signals (glum = 0.8 × 10-3) with a quantum yield of 33% in the crystalline state. This novel set of compounds also showcases intriguing thermally reversible piezochromism.

Helical fused 1,2:8,9-dibenzozethrene oligomers with up to 201° end-to-end twist: "one-pot" synthesis and chiral resolution

Twisted polyarenes with persistent chirality are desirable but their synthesis has remained a challenge. In this study, we present a "one-pot" synthesis of 1,2:8,9-dibenzozethrene (DBZ) and its vertically fused dimers and trimers using nickel-catalyzed cyclo-oligomerization reactions. X-ray crystallographic analysis confirmed highly twisted helical structures that consist of equal parts left- and right-handed enantiomers. Notably, the end-to-end twist between the terminal anthracene units measured 66°, 130°, and 201° for the DBZ monomer, dimer, and trimer, respectively, setting a new record among twisted polyarenes. Furthermore, the chiral resolution by HPLC yielded two enantiomers for the fused DBZ dimer and trimer, both of which maintained stable configurations and showed absorption dissymmetry factors of around 0.008-0.009. Additionally, their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated, which exhibited a chain-length dependence.

Enantioselective synthesis of chiral quinohelicenes through sequential organocatalyzed Povarov reaction and oxidative aromatization

Heterohelicenes are of increasing importance in the fields of materials science, molecular recognition, and asymmetric catalysis. However, enantioselective construction of these molecules, especially by organocatalytic methods, is challenging, and few methods are available. In this study, we synthesize enantioenriched 1-(3-indol)-quino[n]helicenes through chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed Povarov reaction followed by oxidative aromatization. The method has a broad substrate scope and offers rapid access to an array of chiral quinohelicenes with enantioselectivities up to 99%. Additionally, the photochemical and electrochemical properties of selected quinohelicenes are explored.

Stepwise Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Metal Cluster Ensembles

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are usually endowed by chiral linkers and/or guests. The strategy using chiral secondary building units in MOFs for solving the trade-off of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and high dissymmetry factors (|g_lum |) has not been demonstrated. This work directionally assembles predesigned chiral silver clusters with ACQ linkers through reticular chemistry. The nanoscale chirality of the cluster transmits through MOF's framework, where the linkers are arranged in a quasi-parallel manner and are efficiently isolated and rigidified. Consequently, this backbone of chiral cluster-based MOFs demonstrates superb CPL, high PLQYs of 50.3%, and |g_lum | of 1.2 × 10^-2 . Crystallographic analyses and DFT calculations show the quasi-parallel arrangement manners of emitting linkers leading to a large angle between the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments, boosting CPL response. As compared, an ion-pair-direct assembly without interactions between linkers induces one-ninth |g_lum | and one-sixth PLQY values, further highlighting the merits of directional arrangement in reticular nets. In addition, a prototype CPL switching fabricated by a chiral framework is controlled through alternating ultraviolet and visible light. This work is expected to inspire the development of reticular chemistry for high-performance chiroptical materials.

Synthesis of π-Conjugated Chiral Organoborane Macrocycles with Blue to Near-Infrared Emissions and the Diradical Character of Cations

Highly emissive π-conjugated macrocycles with tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have sparked theoretical and synthetic interests in recent years. Herein, we report a synthetic approach to obtain new chiral organoborane macrocycles (CMC1, CMC2, and CMC3) that are built on the structurally chiral [5]helicenes and highly luminescent triarylborane/amine moieties embedded into the cyclic systems. These rarely accessible B/N-doped main-group chiral macrocycles show a unique topology dependence of the optoelectronic and chiroptical properties. CMC1 and CMC2 show a higher luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) together with an enhanced CPL brightness (B_CPL) as compared with CMC3. Electronic effects were also tuned and resulted in bathochromic shifts of their emission and CPL responses from blue for CMC1 to the near-infrared (NIR) region for CMC3. Furthermore, chemical oxidations of the N donor sites in CMC1 gave rise to a highly stable radical cation (CMC1^·+SbF₆^-) and diradical dication species (CMC1^2·2+2SbF₆^-) that serve as a rare example of a positively charged open-shell chiral macrocycle.

Circularly polarized luminescence of helicenes: A data-informed insight

Helicenes are an interesting scaffold for chiroptical properties and in particular circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In this short review, we collect the luminescence (g_lum ) and absorption (g_abs ) dissymmetry factors associated to the first Cotton effect of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum. Considering the data for 170 [n]-helicenes (n = 4-11), overall we found reasonable correlations between g_lum and g_abs . Despite a few notable exceptions, this would confirm a similarity in the stereochemistry of the ground and emitting excited states for most helicenes. These results may be useful in rationalizing chiroptical data and help chemists in designing new helicene structures with the desired CPL properties.

Synthesis of Bioctacene-Incorporated Nanographene with Near-Infrared Chiroptical Properties

We report the synthesis of a hexabenzoperihexacene (HBPH) with two incorporated octacene substructures, which was unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The theoretical isomerization barrier of the (P,P)-/(P,M)-forms was estimated to be 38.4 kcal mol^-1 , and resolution was achieved by chiral HPLC. Notably, the enantiomers exhibited opposite circular dichroism responses up to the near-infrared (NIR) region (830 nm) with a high g_abs value of 0.017 at 616 nm. Moreover, HBPH demonstrated NIR emission with a maximum at 798 nm and an absolute PLQY of 41 %. The excited-state photophysical properties of HBPH were investigated by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing an intriguing feature that was attributed to the rotational and/or conformational dynamics of HBPH after excitation. These results provide new insight into the design of chiral nanographene with NIR optical properties for potential chiroptical applications.

Synthesis, Crystal Analysis, and Physical Properties of Double [6]helicene-Containing Heteroarenes with Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Two novel helical heteronanographenes bearing a [6]helicene unit (3a and 5a) have been synthesized, and their molecular structures are unambiguously determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the as-prepared compounds have isomerization barriers of 29.02 kcal/mol for 3a and 34.07 kcal/mol for 5a, respectively. Optical enantiomers of 5a exhibit appealing chiroptical properties.

New Fields, New Opportunities and New Challenges: Circularly Polarized Multiple Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials that concurrently exhibit high efficiency and narrowband emission are extremely promising applications in 3D and wide color gamut display. By merging the CPL optical property and multiple resonance (MR) induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristic into one molecule, a new strategy, namely CP-MR-TADF, is proposed to generate organic emitters with CPL activity, TADF and narrowband emission. High-performance red, green and blue CP-MR-TADF emitters have been developed following this strategy. Herein, the present status and progress of CP-MR-TADF materials in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is summarized. Finally, for this rapidly growing new research field, the future opportunities are forecasted and the present challenges are discussed.

Efficient Narrowband Circularly Polarized Light Emitters Based on 1,4-B,N-embedded Rigid Donor-Acceptor Helicenes

Narrow-band emission is essential for applicable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active materials in ultrahigh-definition CP-OLEDs. One of the most promising classes of CPL active molecules, helicenes, however, typically exhibit broad emission with a large Stokes shift. We present, herein, a design strategy capitalizing on intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions between nitrogen and boron atoms to address this issue. 1,4-B,N-embedded configurationally stable single- and double helicenes were synthesized straightforwardly. Both helicenes show unprecedentedly narrow fluorescence and CPL bands (full width at half maximum between 17-28 nm, 0.07-0.13 eV) along with high fluorescence quantum yields (72-85 %). Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the relative localization of the natural transition orbitals, mainly on the rigid core of the molecule, and small values of root-mean-square displacements between S₀ and S₁ state geometries, contribute to the narrower emission.

Helical β-isoindigo-Based Chromophores with B-O-B Bridge: Facile Synthesis and Tunable Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Luminescence

It is essential to create organic compounds that exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Helicene-type emitters possess appealing chiroptical features, however, such NIR molecules are scarce due to a paucity of synthetic strategies. Herein, we developed a series of helical β-isoindigo-based B-O-B bridged aza-BODIPY analogs that were synthesized conveniently. The reaction of diimino-β-isoindigo with a heteroaromatic amine produced a restricted ligand cavity, which triggered off the generation of a B-O-B bridge. The B-O-B bridge led to distorted conformations that satisfy the helical requirements, resulting in excellent spectroscopic and chiroptical properties. Tunable CPL with the highest luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) of 1.3×10^-3 and a CPL brightness (B_CPL =11.5 M^-1  cm^-1 ) in the NIR region was achieved. This synthetic approach is expected to offer a new opportunity to chiral chemistry and increase flexibility for chiroptical tuning.

Helical Synthetic Nanographenes with Atomic Precision

ConspectusUnderstanding and harnessing the properties of nanoscale molecular entities are considered as new frontiers in basic chemistry. In this regard, synthetic nanographene with atomic precision has attracted much attention recently. For instance, taking advantage of the marvelous bonding capability of carbon, flat, curved, ribbon-type, or cone-shaped nanographenes have been prepared in highly controllable and elegant manner, allowing one to explore fascinating molecular architectures with intriguing optical, electrochemical, and magnetic characteristics. This stands in stark contrast to other carbon-rich nanomaterials, such as graphite oxides or carbon quantum dots, which preclude thorough investigations because of complicate structural defects. Undoubtedly, synthetic nanographene contributes strongly to modern aromatic chemistry and represents a vibrant field that may deliver transforming functional materials crucial for optoelectronics, nanotechnologies, and biomedicine.Nonetheless, in many cases, synthesis and characterization of nanographene compounds are highly demanding. Low solubility, high molecular strain, undesired selectivity, as well as incomplete or excessive C-C bond formation are common impediments, that require formidable efforts to control the molecular geometry, to modulate the edge structure, to achieve accurate doping, or to push the upper size boundary. These endeavors are indispensable for establishing structure-property relationships, and lay down foundation for exploring synthetic nanographenes at a high level of sophistications.In this Account, we summarize our contributions to this field by presenting a series of helical synthetic nanographenes, such as hexapole [7]helicene (H7H), nitrogen-doped H7H, hexapole [9]helicene (H9H), superhelicene, and supertwistacene. This kind of giant synthetic nanographene reaches the size domain of carbon quantum dots, albeit has precise atomic structure. It provides a unique platform to study aromatic chemistry and chirality at the nanoscale. We discuss synthetic methods and point out, in particular, the strengths and pitfalls of Scholl oxidation, which are expected to be valuable for making synthetic nanographenes in general. In addition, we illustrate their exciting electrochemical and photophysical performance, which include, but are not limited to, reversible multielectron redox chemistry, record high panchromatic absorption, impressive photothermal behavior, and extremely strong Cotton effect. These unusual characteristics are convincingly traced back to their three-dimensional conjugated architectures, highlighting the critical roles of π-electron delocalization, heteroatom-doping, substitution, and molecular symmetry in determining nanographenes' properties and functions. Lastly, we put forward our understanding on the challenges and opportunities that lies ahead and hope this Account will inspire ever more ambitious achievements from this attractive area of research.

Solution-Processable Pure-Red Multiple Resonance-induced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter for Organic Light-Emitting Diode with External Quantum Efficiency over 20

Developing solution-processable red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high color purity and efficiency based on multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) is a formidable challenge. Herein, by introducing auxiliary electron donor and acceptor moieties into the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) distributed positions of multiple resonance skeleton simultaneously, an effective strategy to obtain red MR-TADF emitters was represented. The proof-of-the-concept molecule BN-R exhibits a narrowband pure-red emission at 624 nm, with a high luminous efficiency of 94 % and a narrow bandwidth of 46 nm. Notably, the fabricated solution-processable pure-red OLED based on BN-R exhibits a state-of-the-art external quantum efficiency over 20 % with the Commission Internationale de I'Éclairage coordinates of (0.663, 0.337) and a long operational lifetime (LT₅₀ ) of 1088 hours at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m^-2 .

Dimerized Nitrogen-Annulated Perylene Synthesized from 1,6-Diazecine as Chiral Emitter

In this work, nitrogen-annulated perylene (NP) was dimerized into one framework connected by two nitrogen atoms, generating the target molecule of DNP-DA. Owing to the substructure of 1,6-diazecine ten-membered ring, DNP-DA illustrates helical chirality with moderate dissymmetry factor, elevated molecular levels, expanded conjugation and supramolecular interactions with acceptors etc. Notably, DNP-DA represents a limited example of nitrogen-perylene based CPL emitter with g_lum around 6×10^-3 . Intrigued by the facile fabrication via a simple amination-cross coupling sequence and other above advancing features, this work demonstrates the potential generality of utilizing 1,6-diazecine as a chiral unit to build CPL-active materials.

(BO)2 -Doped Tetrathia[7]helicene: A Configurationally Stable Blue Emitter

Helicenes combine two central themes in chemistry: extended π-conjugation and chirality. Hetero-atom doping preserves both characteristics and allows modulation of the electronic structure of a helicene. Herein, we report the (BO)₂ -doped tetrathia[7]helicene 1, which was prepared from 2-methoxy-3,3'-bithiophene in four steps. 1 is formally derived by substituting two (Mes)B-O moieties in place of (H)C=C(H) fragments in two benzene rings of the parent tetrathia[7]helicene. X-ray crystallography revealed a dihedral angle of 50.26(9)° between the two terminal thiophene rings. The (P)-/(M)-1 enantiomers were separated by chiral HPLC and are configurationally stable at room temperature. The experimentally determined enantiomerization barrier of 27.4±0.1 kcal mol^-1 is lower than that of tetrathia[7]helicene (39.4±0.1 kcal mol^-1 ). The circular dichroism spectra of (P)- and (M)-1 show a perfect mirror-image relationship. 1 is a blue emitter (λ_em =411 nm) with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency of Φ_PL =6 % (cf. tetrathia[7]helicene: λ_em ≈405 nm, Φ_PL =5 %).

Synthesis of Highly Luminescent Chiral Nanographene

Chiral nanographenes with both high fluorescence quantum yields (Φ_F ) and large dissymmetry factors (g_lum ) are essential to the development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. However, most studies have been focused on the improvement of g_lum , whereas how to design highly emissive chiral nanographenes is still unclear. In this work, we propose a new design strategy to achieve chiral nanographenes with high Φ_F by helical π-extension of strongly luminescent chromophores while maintaining the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) distribution pattern. Chiral nanographene with perylene as the core and two dibenzo[6]helicene fragments as the wings has been synthesized, which exhibits a record high Φ_F of 93 % among the reported chiral nanographenes and excellent CPL brightness (B_CPL ) of 32 M^-1  cm^-1 .
