Abstract
Ketyl radicals are synthetically versatile reactive species, but their applications have been hampered by harsh generation conditions employing highly reducing metals. Recently, the pyridine-boryl radical received wide attention as a promising organic reductant because of its mildness as well as convenience in handling. While probing the utility of the pyridine-boryl radical, our group observed facile pinacol coupling reactivity that had not been known at that time. This serendipitous finding was successfully rendered into a practical synthesis of tetraaryl-1,2-diols in up to 99% yield within 1 h. Subsequently, upon examinations of various reaction manifolds, a diastereoselective ketyl-olefin cyclization was accomplished to produce cycloalkanols such as trans-2-alkyl-1-indanols. Compared to the previous methods, the stereocontrolling ability was considerably enhanced by taking advantage of the structurally modifiable boryl group that would be present near the bond-forming site. In this full account, our synthetic efforts with the O-boryl ketyl radicals are disclosed in detail, covering the discovery, optimization, scope expansion, and mechanistic analysis, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Amphidinolides C, F, and U, including C2-C4 analogs, are highly cytotoxic marine macrolides, mainly isolated from dinoflagellates of the genus Amphidinium. All these polyketides share a 75 % or more similar structure, highlighted by a macrolactone ring, at least one trans-2,5-substituted-THF motif and a characteristic polyenic side chain. From their isolation and absolute configurational assignment, the total synthesis of these marine macrolides represented an intense challenge to the organic synthesis community over the last 15 years, with around 14 research groups engaged in this inspiring task. In the first part of this review, we present the different approaches to the isolation and characterization of these natural products, including the most recent analogs, which may cast doubt on the biogenetic origin of these compounds. The various synthetic approaches to the total synthesis of C, F, and U amphidinolides are presented in a second part, focusing on key reactions and/or innovative strategies. The review concludes in a third section summarizing the successful approaches leading to the total synthesis of one of the members of this amphidinolide subfamily.

Abstract
The mechanisms of direct deoxygenative borylation of acetone and benzaldehyde with bis(catecholato)diborane (B2 cat2 ) in the solvent N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) are investigated through detailed density functional theory calculations. These calculations show that the isomer 1,2-B2 cat2 in situ generated from 1,1-B2 cat2 induced by DMA is the reactive boron intermediate for the reactions. The addition of the B-B bond of 1,2-B2 cat2 to the C=O bond of acetone or benzaldehyde via a concerted [2σ+2π]-cycloaddition-like transition state is the rate-limiting step for both the triboration reaction of acetone and the monoboration reaction of benzaldehyde. DMA not only acts as the solvent but also promotes the structural isomerization of B2 cat2 , the deoxygenation of acetone to form the vinyl boronate intermediate and subsequent diboration of vinyl boronate with 1,2-B2 cat2 , as well as the protodeboronation of the gem-diboronate intermediate in the deoxygenative borylation of benzaldehyde. The presented computational results can explain the observed experimental facts and provide insight into the roles of the isomeric 1,2-B2 cat2 and the solvent DMA in related reactions.

Abstract
Bisborylalkanes play important roles in organic synthesis as versatile bifunctional reagents. The two boron moieties in these compounds can be selectively converted into other functional groups through cross-coupling, oxidation or radical reactions. Thus, the development of efficient methods for synthesizing bisborylalkanes is highly demanded. Herein we report a new strategy to access bisborylalkanes through the reaction of N-trisylhydrazones with diboronate, in which the bis(boryl) methane is transformed into 1,2-bis(boronates) via formal carbene insertion. Since the N-trisylhydrazones can be readily derived from the corresponding aldehydes, this strategy represents a practical synthesis of 1,2-diboronates with broad substrate scope. Mechanistic studies reveal an unusual neighboring group effect of 1,1-bis(boronates), which accounts for the observed regioselectivity when unsymmetric 1,1-diboronates are applied.

Abstract
Vicinal diols are abundant among natural and synthetic molecules, and also represent valuable intermediates throughout organic synthesis. Olefin dihydroxylation is an effective strategy to access these derivatives owing to the broad range and availability of alkene feedstocks. OsO4 is among the most used reagents to achieve this transformation, yet its high toxicity and cost remain concerning. Herein, we present a mechanistically distinct strategy for olefin dihydroxylation using nitroarenes as photoresponsive oxidants. Upon purple LEDs irradiation, these species undergo a [3+2]-photocycloaddition with a wide range of olefins to give stable 1,3,2-dioxazolidine intermediates. These species can be accumulated in solution and then reduced in situ to the desired diols, utilising readily accessible and easy to handle solid reagents as H2 surrogates.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the catalytic enantioselective cross-coupling of 1,2-bisboronic esters. Prior work on group specific cross coupling is limited to the use of geminal bis-boronates. This desymmetrization provides a novel approach to prepare enantioenriched cyclopropyl boronates with three contiguous stereocenters, that could be further derivatized through selective functionalization of the carbon-boron bond. Our results suggest that transmetallation, which is the enantiodetermining step, takes place with retention of stereochemistry at carbon.

Abstract
A neighboring boronate group in the substrate provides a dramatic rate acceleration in transmetalation to copper and thereby enables organoboronic esters to participate in unprecedented site-selective cross-couplings. This cross-coupling operates under practical experimental conditions and allows for coupling between vicinal bis(boronic esters) and allyl, alkynyl, and propargyl electrophiles as well as a simple proton. Because the reactive substrates are vicinal bis(boronic esters), the cross-coupling described herein provides an expedient new method for the construction of boron-containing reaction products from alkenes. Mechanistic experiments suggest that chelated cyclic ate complexes may play a role in the transmetalation.

Abstract
Fluorine-containing organoboron compounds have emerged as novel building blocks in chemical synthesis; among them, fluorinated sp2/sp3 diborylated compounds are particularly appealing, since they might undergo chemoselective and diversified transformations of different C-B bonds with fluorinated functionality, thus bringing versatility and complexity to the eventual products. However, expedient, synthetic strategies for the construction of such fluorinated diborylative compounds are very sparse. Herein, we disclose enantioselective Cu-catalyzed sp2/sp3 diborylations of 1-chloro-1-trifluoromethylalkenes, leading to diborylated compounds bearing a gem-difluoroalkenyl moiety; most intriguingly, the new formed C-B bonds include one stereoselective and optically pure Csp3-B bond. Further transformations on the eventual products demonstrated the values of our presented strategy.

Abstract
Defunctionalization of readily available feedstocks to provide alkenes for the synthesis of multifunctional molecules represents an extremely useful process in organic synthesis. Herein, we describe a transition metal‐free, simple and efficient strategy to access alkyl 1,2‐bis(boronate esters) via regio‐ and diastereoselective diboration of secondary and tertiary alkyl halides (Br, Cl, I), tosylates, and alcohols. Control experiments demonstrated that the key to this high reactivity and selectivity is the addition of a combination of potassium iodide and N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMA). The practicality and industrial potential of this transformation are demonstrated by its operational simplicity, wide functional group tolerance, and the late‐stage modification of complex molecules. From a drug discovery perspective, this synthetic method offers control of the position of diversification and diastereoselectivity in complex ring scaffolds, which would be especially useful in a lead optimization program.

Abstract
Organocatalysis is a very useful tool for the asymmetric synthesis of biologically or pharmacologically active compounds because it avoids the use of noxious metals, which are difficult to eliminate from the target products. Moreover, in many cases, the organocatalysed reactions can be performed in benign solvents and do not require anhydrous conditions. It is well-known that most of the above-mentioned reactions are promoted by a simple aminoacid, l-proline, or, to a lesser extent, by the more complex cinchona alkaloids. However, during the past three decades, other enantiopure natural compounds, the carbohydrates, have been employed as organocatalysts. In the present exhaustive review, the detailed preparation of all the sugar-based organocatalysts as well as their catalytic properties are described.

Abstract
Small ring compounds are fascinating molecules and have been used as valuable compounds in organic synthesis. In this study, a carborane-fused four-membered boracycle bearing an electron precise B-B bond, 1,2-[BBrSMe2]2-o-C2B10H10, was synthesized via the reaction of 1,2-Li2-o-carborane with B2Br4(SMe2)2. This novel boracycle can be used as a "strain-release" compound to achieve diboration of alkenes and alkynes, leading to the generation of ring-expansion products. Interestingly, when bis(trimethylsilyl) acetylene was employed, an allene-functionalized six-membered boracycle was obtained. Moreover, DFT calculations were conducted to shed light on the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Any attempt to facilitate a new generation of C-B bonds represents a useful tool in organic synthesis. In addition, if that approach highlights the nucleophilic character of boryl moieties in the absence of transition metal complexes, the challenge to create new reactive platforms becomes an opportunity. We have been deeply involved in the experimental and theoretical validation of C-B bond formation by means of alkoxide activation of tetra-alkoxy diboron reagents and here is presented a convenient guide to understand the concept and the applications.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first example of iron-catalyzed defluoroborylation of unactivated gem-difluoroalkenes, gem-dichloroalkenes, and gem-dibromoalkenes, providing the 1,2-bis(boryl)alkanes in moderate to good yield. This transformation has high regioselectivity, wide substrate scope, and excellent functional group compatibility. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that double β-F elimination is involved in the catalytic cycle, and the 1,1-diborylated alkenes might be intermediates in this iron-catalyzed 1,2-diborylation reaction.

Abstract
The diastereo- and enantioselective diboration of spirocyclobutenes provides a platform for the rapid preparation of a wide variety of chiral spirocyclic building blocks. The chemoselective functionalization of the carbon-boron bond in the products, including a stereospecific sp3 -sp2 Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, provides a powerful tool to control the directionality and the nature of the exit vectors in the spirocyclic framework.

Abstract
An enantioselective synthesis of the C(1)-C(15) segment of the marine natural product amphidinolide C has been accomplished by a route that includes a stereoselective boron-Wittig reaction to furnish a trisubstituted alkenylboronate. In addition, the route employs enantioselective alkene diboration to install the C(6) hydroxyl group which undergoes intramolecular conjugate addition to establish a tetrahydrofuran ring. Lastly, a catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling is accomplished to construct the C(9)-C(10) bond.

Abstract
The preparation of acyclic molecules featuring congested stereocenters in a 1,4-relationship in only three catalytic steps from commercially available building blocks is reported. This approach involves a diastereoselective diboration of alkenyl cyclopropyl methanol derivatives followed by a regioselective exergonic ring fragmentation. The starting materials can be prepared enantiomerically enriched and all substituents can be interconverted, therefore, this strategy allows a large variety of diversely functionalized allylboronic esters possessing distant tetrasubstituted stereocenters with high diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
This paper describes a seven-step synthesis of the proposed structure for chaunopyran A produced by cocultivation of a Chaunopycnis sp. and Trichoderma hamatum. This synthesis included a coupling of a diene sulfone and a tetrahydropyranyl aldehyde as a key step. The sign of the specific rotation value of the synthetic sample was opposite that of the natural product, suggesting that the absolute configuration of the natural product should be revised.

Abstract
Chiral 1,2-bimetallic reagents are useful motifs in synthetic chemistry. Although syn-1,2-bimetallic compounds can be prepared by alkene dimetallation, anti-1,2-bimetallics are still rare. The stereospecific 1,2-metallate shift that occurs during conjunctive cross-coupling is shown to enable a practical and modular approach to the catalytic synthesis of enantioenriched anti-1,2-borosilanes. In addition to reaction development, the synthetic utility of anti-1,2-borosilanes was investigated, including applications to the synthesis of anti-1,2-diols and anti-1,2-amino alcohols.

Abstract
The practical synthesis of carbohydrate-based NHC-Rh complexes bearing C1 or C3 sterically differentiated positions, accessed by glycosylation or SNAr strategies, is reported. These catalysts exhibit pseudo-enantiomeric behaviour in the hydrosilylation of acetophenone. We show that steric bulk at C1 gives preference for (S)-phenyl-1-ethanol, while bulk at C3 leads to the (R)-enantiomer. These results represent the first example of pseudo-enantiomeric carbohydrate-based NHC ligands leading to enantiotopic discrimination.

Abstract
Several bis(dimethylamino)-substituted 1,4-diaza-2,3-diborinines (DADBs) were synthesized with variable substituents at the backbone nitrogen atoms. By reaction with HCl or BX3 (X=Br, I), these species were successfully converted into their synthetically more useful halide congeners. The high versatility of the generated B-X bonds in further functionalization reactions at the boron centers was demonstrated by means of salt elimination (MeLi) and commutation (NMe2 DADBs) reactions, thus making the DADB system a general structural motif in diborane(4) chemistry. A total of 18 DADB derivatives were characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction, revealing a strong dependence of the heterocyclic bonding parameters from the exocyclic substitution pattern at boron. According to our experiments towards the realization of a Dipp-substituted, sterically encumbered DADB, the mechanism of DADB formation proceeds via a transient four-membered azadiboretidine intermediate that subsequently undergoes ring expansion to afford the six-membered DADB heterocycle.

Abstract
Asymmetric dihydroxylation of olefinic groups is an extremely important synthetic transformation which has been widely utilized to obtain optically pure pharmaceuticals and other fine chemical products. In recent years, catalyst systems for the asymmetric C=C dihydroxylations have attracted significant interest, the major research efforts being focused on designing environmentally benign catalyst systems. This mini-review summarizes recent progress in the field, surveying both novel, less toxic modifications of the classical osmium-based catalysts, and the highly efficient and enantioselective non-osmium catalyst systems.
The bibliography includes 50 references.

Abstract
In contrast to the rapid growth of synthetic electrochemistry in recent years, enantioselective catalytic methods powered by electricity remain rare. In this work, we report the development of a highly enantioselective method for the electrochemical cyanophosphinoylation of vinylarenes. A new family of serine-derived chiral bisoxazolines with ancillary coordination sites were identified as optimal ligands.

Abstract
1,2-Bis-boronic esters are versatile intermediates that enable the rapid elaboration of simple alkene precursors. Previous reports on their selective mono-functionalization have targeted the most accessible position, retaining the more hindered secondary boronic ester. In contrast, we have found that photoredox-catalyzed mono-deboronation generates primary β-boryl radicals that undergo rapid 1,2-boron shift to form thermodynamically favored secondary radicals, allowing for selective transformation of the more hindered boronic ester. The pivotal 1,2-boron shift, which has been demonstrated to be stereoretentive, enables access to a wide range of functionalized boronic esters and has been applied to highly diastereoselective fragmentation and transannular cyclization reactions. Furthermore, its generality has been shown in a radical cascade reaction with an allylboronic ester.
