Process-Tracing Study on the Postassembly Modification of Highly Stable Zirconium Metal–Organic Cages

Room-Temperature Synthesis of Covalently Bridged MOP@TpPa-CH3 Composite Photocatalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

The conversion of CO2 into useful chemicals via photocatalysts is a promising strategy for resolving the environmental problems caused by the addition of CO2. Herein, a series of composite photocatalysts MOP@TpPa-CH3 based on MOP-NH2 and TpPa-CH3 through covalent bridging have been prepared via a facile room-temperature evaporation method and employed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The photocatalytic performances of MOP@TpPa-CH3 are greater than those of TpPa-CH3 and MOP-NH2, where the CO generation rate of MOP@TpPa-CH3 under 10% CO2 still reaches 119.25 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 2.18 times higher than that under pure CO2 (54.74 μmol g-1 h-1). To investigate the structural factors affecting the photocatalytic activity, MOP@TBPa-CH3 without C═O groups is synthesized, and the photoreduction performance is also evaluated. The controlling experimental results demonstrate that the excellent photoreduction CO2 performance of MOP@TpPa-CH3 in a 10% CO2 atmosphere is due to the presence of C═O groups in TpPa-CH3. This work offers a new design and construction strategy for novel MOP@COF composites.

What Matters to Fabrication of Type II Porous Liquids: A Case Study on Metallocages and Bulky Ionic Liquid?

Porosity in bulky solvents can be created by the methods of dispersing and dissolving porous hosts or by their chemical adornment. And the ensuing liquids with cavities offer requisite high gas uptakes. Intriguingly, metal-organic cages (MOCs) as discrete nanoporous hosts have been utilized recently as soluble entities to obtain a series of interesting type II porous liquids (PLs). Yet, factors affecting the fabrication of type II PLs have not been disclosed. Herein, three metallocages (NUT-101, ZrT-1-NH2, and ZrT-1) with the same zirconocene nodes but different organic ligands are chosen as porous hosts and a polyethylene-glycol (PEG) linked bis-imidazolium based IL, IL(NTf2), is used as a bulky solvent. It is revealed for the first time that the generation of type II PL depends upon the flexibility of MOCs and the interaction between MOCs and solvent molecules. The maximum solubility is observed with NUT-101 (5%) in IL(NTf2) while ZrT-1-NH2 and ZrT-1 remain least soluble (0.5% and 0.2%). As a result, PL-NUT-101-5% with most intrinsic cavities shows higher CO2 uptake (0.576 mmol g-1) than PL-ZrT-1-NH2-0.5% and PL-ZrT-1-0.2% as well as those reported type II PLs.

Supramolecular cage-mediated cargo transport

A steady stream of material transport based on carriers and channels in living systems plays an extremely important role in normal life activities. Inspired by nature, researchers have extensively applied supramolecular cages in cargo transport because of their unique three-dimensional structures and excellent physicochemical properties. In this review, we will focus on the development of supramolecular cages as carriers and channels for cargo transport in abiotic and biological systems over the past fifteen years. In addition, we will discuss future challenges and potential applications of supramolecular cages in substance transport.

Precise Pore Engineering of Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ternary Mixtures

One-step purification of ethylene from ternary mixtures (C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6) can greatly reduce the energy consumption of the separation process, but it is extremely challenging. Herein, we use crystal engineering and reticular chemistry to introduce unsaturated bonds (ethynyl and alkyne) into ligands, and successfully design and synthesized two novel Zr-MOCs (ZrT-1-ethenyl and ZrT-1-alkyne). The introduction of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds provides abundant adsorption sites within the framework while modulating the pore window size. Comprehensive characterization techniques including single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, as well as electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS) confirm that ZrT-1-ethenyl and ZrT-1-alkyne possess an isostructural framework with ZrT-1 and ZrT-1-Me, respectively. Adsorption isotherms and breakthrough experiments combined with theoretical calculations demonstrate that ZrT-1-ethenyl can effectively remove trace C2H2 and C2H6 in C2H4 and achieve separation of C2H2 from C2H4 and CO2. ZrT-1-ethenyl can also directly purify C2H4 in liquid solutions. This work provides a benchmark for MOCs that one-step purification of ethylene from ternary mixtures.

Supramolecular Assembly Frameworks (SAFs): Shaping the Future of Functional Materials

Supramolecular assembly frameworks (SAFs) represent a new category of porous materials, utilizing non-covalent interactions, setting them apart from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This category includes but is not restricted to hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks. SAFs stand out for their outstanding porosity, crystallinity, and stability, alongside unique dissolution-recrystallization dynamics that enable significant structural and functional modifications. Crucially, their non-covalent assembly strategies allow for a balanced manipulation of porosity, symmetry, crystallinity, and dimensions, facilitating the creation of advanced crystalline porous materials unattainable through conventional covalent or coordination bond synthesis. Despite their considerable promise in overcoming several limitations inherent to MOFs and COFs, particularly in terms of solution-processability, SAFs have received relatively little attention in recent literature. This Minireview aims to shed light on standout SAFs, exploring their design principles, synthesis strategies, and characterization methods. It emphasizes their distinctive features and the broad spectrum of potential applications across various domains, aiming to catalyze further development and practical application within the scientific community.

Humidity-Induced Self-Oscillating and Self-Healing Hypercrosslinked Metal-Organic Polyhedra Membranes

Designing autonomously oscillating materials is highly desirable for emerging smart material fields but challenging. Herein, a type of hypercrosslinked metal-organic polyhedra (HCMOPs) membranes formed by covalent crosslinking of boronic acid-modified Zr-based MOPs with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are rationally designed. In these membranes, MOPs serve as high-connectivity nodes and provide dynamic borate bonds with PVA in hypercrosslinked networks, which can be broken/formed reversibly upon the stimulus of water vapor. The humidity response characteristic of HCMOPs promotes their self-oscillating and self-healing properties. HCMOP membranes can realize a self-oscillating property above the water surface even after loading a cargo that is 1.5 times the weight of the membrane due to the fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. Finally, the HCMOP actuator can realize energy conversion from mechanical energy into electricity when coupled with a piezoelectric membrane. This work not only paves a new avenue to construct MOP-polymer hybrid materials but also expands the application scopes of MOPs for smart actuation devices.

Covalent Post-Synthetic Modification of Metal-Organic Cages: Concepts and Recent Progress

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are supramolecular coordination complexes that have internal cavities for hosting guest molecules and exhibiting various properties. However, the functions of MOCs are limited by the choice of the building blocks. Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is a technique that can introduce new functional groups and replace existing ones on the MOCs without changing their geometry. Among many PSM methods, covalent PSM is a promising approach to modify MOCs with tailored structures and functions. Covalent PSM can be applied to either the internal cavity or the external surface of the MOCs, depending on the functionality expected to be customized. However, there are still some challenges and limitations in the field of covalent PSM of MOCs, such as the balance between the stability of MOCs and the harshness of organic reactions involved in covalent PSMs. This concept article introduces the organic reaction types involved in covalent PSM of MOCs, their new applications after modification, and summarizes and provides an outlook of this research field.

Integrated Anionic Zirconium-Organic Cage and Cationic Boron-Imidazolate Cage for Synergetic Optical Limiting

Making oppositely charged metal-organic cages (MOCs) into a tightly ordered structure may bring interesting functions. Herein, we report a novel structure composed of anionic (Zr4 L6 )8- (L=embonate) tetrahedral cages and in situ-formed cationic [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ (Bim=[BH(im)3 ]- ; im=imidazole) cubic cages. Chiral transfer is observed from enantiopure (Zr4 L6 )8- cage to enantiopure [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ cage. A pair of enantiomers (PTC-373(Δ) and PTC-373(Λ)) are formed. PTC-373 exhibits high chemical and thermal stabilities, affording an interesting single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. More importantly, the combination of ionic pair cages significantly enhances its third-order nonlinear optical property, and its thin-film exhibits an excellent optical limiting effect.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Capsule-Shaped Zirconium Coordination Cages with Quaternary Structure

Biological macromolecules exhibit emergent functions through hierarchical self-assembly, a concept that is extended to design artificial supramolecular assemblies. Here, the first example of breaking the common parallel arrangement of capsule-shaped zirconium coordination cages is reported by constructing the hierarchical porous framework ZrR-1. ZrR-1 adopts a quaternary structure resembling protein and contains 12-connected chloride clusters, representing the highest connectivity for zirconium-based cages reported thus far. Compared to the parallel framework ZrR-2, ZrR-1 demonstrated enhanced stability in acidic aqueous solutions and a tenfold increase in BET surface area (879 m2  g-1 ). ZrR-1 also exhibits excellent proton conductivity, reaching 1.31 × 10-2 S·cm-1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity, with a low activation energy of 0.143 eV. This finding provides insights into controlling the hierarchical self-assembly of metal-organic cages to discover superstructures with emergent properties.

Ultralight crystalline hybrid composite material for highly efficient sequestration of radioiodine

Considering the importance of sustainable nuclear energy, effective management of radioactive nuclear waste, such as sequestration of radioiodine has inflicted a significant research attention in recent years. Despite the fact that materials have been reported for the adsorption of iodine, development of effective adsorbent with significantly improved segregation properties for widespread practical applications still remain exceedingly difficult due to lack of proper design strategies. Herein, utilizing unique hybridization synthetic strategy, a composite crystalline aerogel material has been fabricated by covalent stepping of an amino-functionalized stable cationic discrete metal-organic polyhedra with dual-pore containing imine-functionalized covalent organic framework. The ultralight hybrid composite exhibits large surface area with hierarchical macro-micro porosity and multifunctional binding sites, which collectively interact with iodine. The developed nano-adsorbent demonstrate ultrahigh vapor and aqueous-phase iodine adsorption capacities of 9.98 g.g-1 and 4.74 g.g-1, respectively, in static conditions with fast adsorption kinetics, high retention efficiency, reusability and recovery.

(Bio)Functionalisation of Metal-Organic Polyhedra by Using Click Chemistry

The surface chemistry of Metal-Organic Polyhedra (MOPs) is crucial to their physicochemical properties because it governs how they interact with external substances such as solvents, synthetic organic molecules, metal ions, and even biomolecules. Consequently, the advancement of synthetic methods that facilitate the incorporation of diverse functional groups onto MOP surfaces will significantly broaden the range of properties and potential applications for MOPs. This study describes the use of copper(I)-catalysed, azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reactions to post-synthetically modify the surface of alkyne-functionalised cuboctahedral MOPs. To this end, a novel Rh(II)-based MOP with 24 available surface alkyne groups was synthesised. Each of the 24 alkyne groups on the surface of the "clickable" Rh-MOP can react with azide-containing molecules at room temperature, without compromising the integrity of the MOP. The wide substrate catalogue and orthogonal nature of CuAAC click chemistry was exploited to densely functionalise MOPs with diverse functional groups, including polymers, carboxylic and phosphonic acids, and even biotin moieties, which retained their recognition capabilities once anchored onto the surface of the MOP.

Capture of Singlet Oxygen Modulates Host-Guest Behavior of Coordination Cages

The anthracene panels of two tetrahedral MII 4 L6 cages, where MII =CoII or FeII , were found to react with photogenerated singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) in a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. ESI-MS analysis showed the cobalt(II) cages to undergo complete transformation of all anthracene panels into endoperoxides, whereas the iron(II) congeners underwent incomplete conversion. The reaction was found to be partially reversible in the case of the 1-FeII cage. The dioxygen-cage cycloadducts were found to bind a set of guest molecules more weakly than the parent cages, with affinity dropping by more than two orders of magnitude in some cases. The light-driven cycloaddition reaction between cage and 1 O2 thus served as a stimulus for guest release and reuptake.

Zirconium metal-organic cage decorated with squaramides imparts dual activation for chemical fixation of CO2 under mild conditions

A "two-in-one" dual activation strategy has been developed to give high-density hydrogen-bonding (HB) active units and Lewis acid (LA) active centres by immobilizing squaramides into metal-organic cages (MOCs). The obtained MOC served as an efficient catalyst for the chemical fixation of CO2 under mild conditions up to 99% yields with good recyclability, and the mechanism of high catalytic activity has been further explored.

Tailor-Made Pdn L2n Metal-Organic Cages through Covalent Post-Synthetic Modification

Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is an effective approach for the tailored functionalization of metal-organic architectures, but its generalizability remains challenging. Herein we report a general covalent PSM strategy to functionalize Pd_n L_2n metal-organic cages (MOCs, n=2, 12) through an efficient Diels-Alder cycloaddition between peripheral anthracene substituents and various functional motifs bearing a maleimide group. As expected, the solubility of functionalized Pd₁₂ L₂₄ in common solvents can be greatly improved. Interestingly, concentration-dependent circular dichroism and aggregation-induced emission are achieved with chiral binaphthol (BINOL)- and tetraphenylethylene-modified Pd₁₂ L₂₄ , respectively. Furthermore, Pd₁₂ L₂₄ can be introduced with two different functional groups (e.g., chiral BINOL and achiral pyrene) through a step-by-step PSM route to obtain chirality-induced circularly polarized luminescence. Moreover, similar results are readily observed with a smaller Pd₂ L₄ system.

Encapsulation Studies on closo-Dicarbadodecaborane Isomers in Neutral Tetrahedral Palladium(II) Cages

The encapsulation of icosahedral closo-dicarbadodecaborane (o-, m-, and p-carboranes, Cb) as guest molecules at the intrinsic cavities of the three isostructural tetrahedral cages [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(Cl-AN)₆] (1), [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(Br-AN)₆] (2), and [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(H-AN)₆] (3) was studied. The formation of definite host-guest assemblies was probed with mass spectrometry, IR, and NMR spectral analysis. 2D DOSY ¹H NMR of the Cb⊂Cage systems showed similar diffusion coefficient (D) values for the host and guest species, signifying the encapsulation of these guests inside the cage assemblies. The hydrodynamic radius (R_H) derived from the D values of the host and guest species further confirmed the encapsulation of the Cb isomers at the cage pockets. The single-molecule energy optimization of the host-guest assemblies indicated the preferential binding of o-Cb as a guest inside the cages (1-3). The stabilization of these Cb guests inside these cages was further attributed to various possible nonclassical C-H···X-type interactions.

Homochiral Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra with Multiple Kinds of Vertices

Metal-organic polyhedra featuring non-Archimedean/Platonic architectures with multiple kinds of vertices have aroused great attention for their fascinating structures and properties but are yet challenging to achieve. Here, we report a combinatorial strategy to make such nonclassic polyhedral cages by combining kinetically labile metal ions with non-planar organic linkers instead of the usual only inert metal centers and planar ligands. This facilitates the synthesis of an enantiopure twisted tetra(3-pyridyl)-based TADDOL (TADDOL = tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol) ligand (L) capable of binding Ni(II) ions to produce a regular convex cage, Ni₆L₈, with two mixed metal/organic vertices and three rarely reported concave cages Ni₁₄L₈, Ni₁₈L₁₂, and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with three or four mixed vertices. Each of the cages has an amphiphilic cavity decorated with chiral dihydroxyl functionalities and packs into a three-dimensional structure. The enantioselective adsorption and separation performances of the cages are strongly dependent on their pore structure features. Particularly, Ni₁₄L₈ and Ni₁₈L₁₂ with wide openings can be solid adsorbents for the adsorptive and solid-phase extractive separation of a variety of racemic spirodiols with up to 98% ee, whereas Ni₆L₈ and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with smaller pore apertures cannot adsorb the racemates. The combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the host-guest adduct and GCMC simulation indicates that the enantiospecific recognition capabilities originate from the well-organized chiral inner sphere as well as multiple interactions within the chiral microenvironment. This work therefore provides an attractive strategy for the rational design of polyhedral cages, showing geometrically fascinating structures with properties different from those of classic assemblies.

Supramolecular Coordination Cages for Artificial Photosynthesis and Synthetic Photocatalysis

Because sunlight is the most abundant energy source on earth, it has huge potential for practical applications ranging from sustainable energy supply to light driven chemistry. From a chemical perspective, excited states generated by light make thermodynamically uphill reactions possible, which forms the basis for energy storage into fuels. In addition, with light, open-shell species can be generated which open up new reaction pathways in organic synthesis. Crucial are photosensitizers, which absorb light and transfer energy to substrates by various mechanisms, processes that highly depend on the distance between the molecules involved. Supramolecular coordination cages are well studied and synthetically accessible reaction vessels with single cavities for guest binding, ensuring close proximity of different components. Due to high modularity of their size, shape, and the nature of metal centers and ligands, cages are ideal platforms to exploit preorganization in photocatalysis. Herein we focus on the application of supramolecular cages for photocatalysis in artificial photosynthesis and in organic photo(redox) catalysis. Finally, a brief overview of immobilization strategies for supramolecular cages provides tools for implementing cages into devices. This review provides inspiration for future design of photocatalytic supramolecular host-guest systems and their application in producing solar fuels and complex organic molecules.

Metal Organic Polygons and Polyhedra: Instabilities and Remedies

The field of coordination chemistry has undergone rapid transformation from preparation of monometallic complexes to multimetallic complexes. So far numerous multimetallic coordination complexes have been synthesized. Multimetallic coordination complexes with well-defined architectures are often called as metal organic polygons and polyhedra (MOPs). In recent past, MOPs have received tremendous attention due to their potential applicability in various emerging fields. However, the field of coordination chemistry of MOPs often suffer set back due to the instability of coordination complexes particularly in aqueous environment-mostly by aqueous solvent and atmospheric moisture. Accordingly, the fate of the field does not rely only on the water solubilities of newly synthesized MOPs but very much dependent on their stabilities both in solution and solid state. The present review discusses several methodologies to prepare MOPs and investigates their stabilities under various circumstances. Considering the potential applicability of MOPs in sustainable way, several methodologies (remedies) to enhance the stabilities of MOPs are discussed here.

Aptamers-functionalized nanoscale MOFs for saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin sensing in sea foods through FRET

Saxitoxin (STX) and tetrodotoxin (TTX) are widely distributed and extremely harmful marine toxins, it is certainly worth to spend effort to develop facile methods to detect them in sea food for human safety. In this work, two nano-sensors were developed by combining with two zirconium fluorescence Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) with two emissions and TAMRA-labelled aptamers for STX and TTX sensing, respectively. The recognition of STX and TTX by these nano-sensors could change the structure of aptamer, which caused the blue or green emissions from NMOFs (energy donor) decreased while red emission from TAMRA-labelled aptamers (energy acceptor) increased owing to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect. Based on this strategy, NMOFs-Aptasensor 1 and NMOFs-Aptasensor 2 were developed for the ratiometric detection, with detection limits of 1.17 nM and 3.07 nM for STX and TTX, respectively. Moreover, NMOFs-Aptasensors displayed significant stability, pH-independence, selectivity and NMOFs-Aptasensors were successfully applied in shellfish sample for toxin sensing.

Altering the solubility of metal-organic polyhedra via pendant functionalization of Cp3Zr3O(OH)3 nodes

The chemistry of zirconium-based metal-organic polyhedra (ZrMOPs) is often limited by their poor solubilities. Despite their attractive features-including high yielding and facile syntheses, predictable topologies, high stability, and tunability-problematic solubilities have caused ZrMOPs to be under-studied and under-applied. Although these cages have been synthesized with a wide variety of carboxylate-based bridging ligands, we explored a new method for ZrMOP functionalization via node-modification, which we hypothesized could influence solubility. Herein, we report ZrMOPs with benzyl-, vinylbenzyl-, and trifluoromethylbenzyl-pendant groups decorating cyclopentadienyl moieties. The series was characterized by ¹H/¹⁹F NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effects of node functionalities on ZrMOP solubility were quantified using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Substitution caused a decrease in water solubility, but for certain organic solvents, e.g. DMF, solubility could be enhanced by ∼20×, from 16 μM for the unfunctionalized cage to 310 μM for the vinylbenzyl- and trifluoromethylbenzyl-cages.

A Platinum(II)-Based Molecular Cage with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Enzymatic Photocyclization of Alkynylaniline

Enzymes facilitate chemical conversions through the collective activity of aggregated components, but the marriage of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with molecular containers to emulate enzymatic conversion remains challenging. Herein, we report a new approach to construct a Pt^II -based octahedral cage with AIE characteristics for the photocyclization of alkynylaniline by restricting the rotation of the pendant phenyl rings peripheral to the Pt^II corner. With the presence of water, the C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions involving the triphenylphosphine fragments resulted in aggregation of the molecular cages into spherical particles and significantly enhanced the Pt^II -based luminescence. The kinetically inert Pt-NP chelator, with highly differentiated redox potentials in the ground and excited states, and the efficient coordination activation of the platinum corner facilitated excellent catalysis of the photocyclization of alkynylaniline. The enzymatic kinetics and the advantages of binding and activating substrates in an aqueous medium provide a new avenue to develop mimics for efficient photosynthesis.

RhB-encapsulated metal-organic cage as a dual-emission fluorescence sensor for detection of malachite green and glycine

RhB@ZrT-1-OH composite was constructed by introduction of Rhodamine B (RhB) into the cages of zirconium-based metal-organic cage that had two fluorescence emission peaks at 466 and 612 nm upon excitation at 327 nm. The dual-emission fluorescence sensor exhibits ultra-high sensitive detection for malachite green (MG) and glycine (Gly) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 6.86). RhB@ZrT-1-OH as a ratiometric fluorescence probe was applied to detect MG with a low LOD of 0.2879 μM and presented obvious fluorescence visual changes from orange to purple to blue under 254 nm UV-vis lamp. Moreover, RhB@ZrT-1-OH also can be utilized as a "turn-on" fluorescence sensor to recognize Gly with a low LOD of 0.3747 μM and exhibits fluorescence color changes from orange to pink to purple. Notably, the corresponding test papers for sensing MG and Gly were designed for recognize the concentration of MG and Gly. Furthermore, the dual-emission fluorescence sensor can be used to detect MG and Gly in fish and human serum with high sensitivity and reliable. The possible detecting mechanisms of RhB@ZrT-1-OH for sensing MG and Gly were detailedly explored.

Reversible Discrete-to-Extended Metal-Organic Polyhedra Transformation by Sulfonic Acid Surface Functionalization

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are molecular porous units in which desired functionalities can be installed with precise geometrical and compositional control. By combing two complementary chemical moieties, such as sulfonic acid groups and Rh(II)-carboxylate paddlewheel, we synthesized a robust water-soluble cuboctahedral MOP with excellent features in both solution and solid states. Herein, we demonstrate that the superior chemical stability of the Rh₂ unit and the elevated number of functional groups on the surface (24 per cage) result in a porous cage with high solubility and stability in water, including acidic, neutral, and basic pH conditions. We also prove that the sulfonic acid-rich form of the cage can be isolated through postsynthetic acid treatment. This transformation involves an improved gas uptake capacity and the capability to reversibly assemble the cages into a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) structure. Likewise, this sulfonic acid functionalization provides both MOP and MOF solids with high proton conductivities (>10^-3 S cm^-1), comparable to previously reported high conducting metal-organic materials. The influence of the MOP-to-MOF processing in the gas adsorption capacity indicates that this structural transformation can provide materials with higher and more controllable porous properties. These results illustrate the high potential of acidic MOPs as more flexible porous building units in terms of processability, structural complexity, and tunability of the properties.

Self-assembly of stable and high-performance molecular cage-crosslinked graphene oxide membranes for contaminant removal

Membrane separation is regarded as efficient technology to alleviate global water crisis. Two-dimensional membranes are promising for contaminant removal from wastewaters, but their uncontrollable transport pathway and instability hinder the further development. In this study, the high-performance and stable two-dimensional framework membranes are self-assembled by graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and amino-appended metal-organic polyhedrons (MOPs) for water purification and remediation. The MOP molecular cages are uniformly intercalated between GO nanosheets and enriched at defects/edges, and can crosslink membranes, to provide in-plane selective channels, refine vertical passageways, and fix out-of-plane interlayer spaces. The prepared GO/MOP framework membranes have improved stability and nanofiltration performance under cross-flow condition, can keep performance in water after 50 h filtration, and show high rejections over 92% for Na₂SO₄ and 99% for antibiotic and dye contaminants with molecular weights over 280 g mol^-1, and sixfold permeance as that of GO membranes. Our molecular cage-intercalated and crosslinked two-dimensional frameworks offer an alternative route to design robust membranes for efficient removal of contaminants in wastewaters.

Hydrogen Isotope Separation Using a Metal–Organic Cage Built from Macrocycles

Porous materials that contain ultrafine pore apertures can separate hydrogen isotopes via kinetic quantum sieving (KQS). However, it is challenging to design materials with suitably narrow pores for KQS that also show good adsorption capacities and operate at practical temperatures. Here, we investigate a metal–organic cage (MOC) assembled from organic macrocycles and Zn^II ions that exhibits narrow windows (<3.0 Å). Two polymorphs, referred to as 2α and 2β, were observed. Both polymorphs exhibit D₂/H₂ selectivity in the temperature range 30–100 K. At higher temperature (77 K), the D₂ adsorption capacity of 2β increases to about 2.7 times that of 2α, along with a reasonable D₂/H₂ selectivity. Gas sorption analysis and thermal desorption spectroscopy suggest a gate‐opening effect of the MOCs pore aperture. This promotes KQS at temperatures above liquid nitrogen temperature, indicating that MOCs hold promise for hydrogen isotope separation in real industrial environments.

Trap Inlaid Cationic Hybrid Composite Material for Efficient Segregation of Toxic Chemicals from Water

Metal-based oxoanions are potentially toxic pollutants that can cause serious water pollution. Therefore, the segregation of such species has recently received significant research attention. Even though several adsorbents have been employed for effective management of chemicals, their limited microporous nature along with non-monolithic applicability has thwarted their large-scale real-time application. Herein, we developed a unique anion exchangeable hybrid composite aerogel material (IPcomp-6), integrating a stable cationic metal-organic polyhedron with a hierarchically porous metal-organic gel. The composite scavenger demonstrated a highly selective and very fast segregation efficiency for various hazardous oxoanions such as, HAsO₄ ^2- , SeO₄ ^2- , ReO₄ ^- , CrO₄ ^2- , MnO₄ ^- , in water, in the presence of 100-fold excess of other coexisting anions. The material was able to selectively eliminate trace HAsO₄ ^2- even at low concentration to well below the As^V limit in drinking water defined by WHO.

Synthesis of the two isomers of heteroleptic Rh12L6L'6 metal-organic polyhedra by screening of complementary linkers

We have synthesised and characterised the two possible isomers of heteroleptic trigonal antiprismatic M₁₂L₆L'₆ MOPs by screening reactions of rhodium acetate with different pairs of complementary dicarboxylate linkers. The resulting 12 new MOPs (eight of isomer A + four of isomer B) are microporous in the solid state, exhibiting Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas as high as 770 m² g^-1.

Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages: Synthesis and Applications

ConspectusFor the last two decades, materials scientists have contributed to a growing library of porous crystalline materials. These synthetic materials are typically extended networks, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), or discrete materials like metal-organic cages (MOCs) and porous organic cages (POCs). Advanced porous materials have shown promise for various applications due to their modular nature and structural tunability. MOCs have recently garnered attention because of their molecularity that bestows them with many unique possibilities (e.g., solution-processability, structural diversity, and postsynthetic processability).MOCs are discrete molecular assemblies of organic ligands coordinated with either metal cations or metal oxide clusters of different nuclearities, resulting in architectures with inherent porosity. Notably, the molecular nature of MOCs endows them with easy solution-processability unattainable with traditional framework materials. To date, a number of stable MOCs have been reported, such as those based on Rh (Rh-O bond energy: 405 ± 42 kJ/mol), Fe (Fe-O bond energy: 407.0 ± 1.0 kJ/mol), Cr (Cr-O bond energy: 461 ± 8.7 kJ/mol), Ti (Ti-O bond energy: 666.5 ± 5.6 kJ/mol), and Zr (Zr-O bond energy: 766.1 ± 10.6 kJ/mol). Paddle-wheel MOCs have also shown great stability in aqueous environments due to their rigid backbones. The zirconium MOC (Zr-MOCs) family emerges as a class of very robust cages for which their high bond energy endows them with high hydrothermal stability.In 2013, we reported the first four zirconocene tetrahedrons assembled from trinuclear zirconium oxide clusters with ditopic or tritopic organic ligands. Since then, significant progress in the rational design of Zr-MOC has led to an assortment of structures dedicated to meaningful applications.In this Account, we highlight the recent progress in synthesizing Zr-MOCs and Zr-MOC-based higher dimensional frameworks and their applications dedicated in our laboratories and beyond. The general Zr-MOC synthetic strategy involves assembling Zr trinuclear clusters with organic ligands (rigid or flexible) containing various functional groups. This chemistry has afforded cages with structural versatility and active sites, e.g., amino groups, for postsynthetic modifications (PSMs). Since the extrinsic porosity of cage-based frameworks is relatively weak, the resulting frameworks are susceptible to structural rearrangement after solvent removal. To circumvent this limitation, increasing the hydrogen bond ratio and strength between interlinked cages and conducting in situ catalytic polymerizations have been reported to afford permanently porous structures amenable to host-guest reactions.To expand their potential applications, multifunctional Zr-MOCs are highly desired. Such multivariate MOCs can be attained by either employing the isoreticular expansion strategy to create MOCs with high surface areas or using mixed-ligand approaches to afford heterogeneous MOCs. In addition, amorphous MOCs, flexible organic ligands, new functionalities, and MOC-based extended networks are exciting new approaches to developing materials with structural versatility and enhanced characteristics. Thereby, we believe the stability and versatility of the Zr-MOC family hold great potential in expanding and addressing challenging applications.

Zirconium Metal-Organic Polyhedra with Dual Behavior for Organophosphate Poisoning Treatment

Organophosphate nerve agents and pesticides are extremely toxic compounds because they result in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition and concomitant nerve system damage. Herein, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and proof-of-concept utility of zirconium metal-organic polyhedra (Zr-MOPs) for organophosphate poisoning treatment. The results show the formation of robust tetrahedral cages [((n-butylCpZr)3(OH)3O)4L6]Cl6 (Zr-MOP-1; L = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, n-butylCp = n-butylcyclopentadienyl, Zr-MOP-10, and L = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate) decorated with lipophilic alkyl residues and possessing accessible cavities of ∼9.8 and ∼10.7 Å inner diameters, respectively. These systems are able to both capture the organophosphate model compound diisopropylfluorophosphate (DIFP) and host and release the AChE reactivator drug pralidoxime (2-PAM). The resulting 2-PAM@Zr-MOP-1(0) host-guest assemblies feature a sustained delivery of 2-PAM under simulated biological conditions, with a concomitant reactivation of DIFP-inhibited AChE. Finally, 2-PAM@Zr-MOP systems have been incorporated into biocompatible phosphatidylcholine liposomes with the resulting assemblies being non-neurotoxic, as proven using neuroblastoma cell viability assays.

Stimuli-Responsive Crystalline Smart Materials: From Rational Design and Fabrication to Applications

Stimuli-responsive smart materials that can undergo reversible chemical/physical changes under external stimuli such as mechanical stress, heat, light, gas, electricity, and pH, are currently attracting increasing attention in the fields of sensors, actuators, optoelectronic devices, information storage, medical applications, and so forth. The current smart materials mostly concentrate on polymers, carbon materials, crystalline liquids, and hydrogels, which have no or low structural order (i.e., the responsive groups/moieties are disorderly in the structures), inevitably introducing deficiencies such as a relatively low response speeds, energy transformation inefficiencies, and unclear structure-property relationships. Consequently, crystalline materials with well-defined and regular molecular arrays can offer a new opportunity to create novel smart materials with improved stimuli-responsive performance. Crystalline materials include framework materials (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, MOFs; covalent organic frameworks, COFs) and molecular crystals (e.g., organic molecules and molecular cages), which have obvious advantages as smart materials compared to amorphous materials. For example, responsive groups/moieties can be uniformly installed in the skeleton of the crystal materials to form ordered molecular arrays, making energy transfer between external-stimulus signals and responsive sites much faster and more efficiently. Besides that, the well-defined structures facilitate in situ characterization of their structural transformation at the molecular level by means of various techniques and high-tech equipment such as in situ spectra and single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, thus benefiting the investigation and understanding of the mechanism behind the stimuli-responsive behaviors and structure-property relationships. Nevertheless, some unsolved challenges remain for crystalline smart materials (CSMs), hampering the fabrication of smart material systems for practical applications. For instance, as the materials' crystallinity increases, their processability and mechanical properties usually decrease, unavoidably hindering their practical application. Moreover, crystalline smart materials mostly exist as micro/nanosized powders, which are difficult to make stimuli-responsive on the macroscale. Thus, developing strategies that can balance the materials' crystallinity and processability and establishing macroscale smart material systems are of great significance for practical applications.In this Account, we mainly summarize the recent research progress achieved by our groups, including (i) the rational design and fabrication of new stimuli-responsive crystalline smart materials, including molecular crystals and framework materials, and an in-depth investigation of their response mechanism and structure-property relationship and (ii) creating chemical/physical modification strategies to improve the processability and mechanical properties for crystalline materials and establishing macroscale smart systems for practical applications. Overall, this Account summarizes the state-of-the-art progress of stimuli-responsive crystalline smart materials and points out the existing challenges and future development directions in the field.

Post-synthetic modifications of metal–organic cages

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are discrete, supramolecular entities that consist of metal nodes and organic linkers, which can offer solution processability and high porosity. Thereby, their predesigned structures can undergo post-synthetic modifications (PSMs) to introduce new functional groups and properties by modifying the linker, metal node, pore or surface environment. This Review explores current PSM strategies used for MOCs, including covalent, coordination and noncovalent methods. The effects of newly introduced functional groups or generated complexes upon the PSMs of MOCs are also detailed, such as improving structural stability or endowing desired functionalities. The development of the aforementioned design principles has enabled systematic approaches for the development and characterization of families of MOCs and, thereby, provides insight into structure-function relationships that will guide future developments.

Metal-Organic Polyhedra as Building Blocks for Porous Extended Networks

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are a subclass of coordination cages that can adsorb and host species in solution and are permanently porous in solid-state. These characteristics, together with the recent development of their orthogonal surface chemistry and the assembly of more stable cages, have awakened the latent potential of MOPs to be used as building blocks for the synthesis of extended porous networks. This review article focuses on exploring the key developments that make the extension of MOPs possible, highlighting the most remarkable examples of MOP-based soft materials and crystalline extended frameworks. Finally, the article ventures to offer future perspectives on the exploitation of MOPs in fields that still remain ripe toward the use of such unorthodox molecular porous platforms.

Flexible Vertex Engineers the Controlled Assembly of Distorted Supramolecular Tetrahedral and Octahedral Cages

Designing and building unique cage assemblies attract increasing interest from supramolecular chemists but remain synthetically challenging. Herein, we propose the use of a flexible vertex with adjustable angles to selectively form highly distorted tetrahedral and octahedral cages, for the first time, in which the flexible vertex forms from the synergistic effect of coordination and covalent interactions. The inherent interligand angle of the vertex can be modulated by guest anions present, which allows for the fine-tuning of different cage geometries. Furthermore, the reversible structural transformation between tetrahedral and octahedral cages was achieved by anion exchange monitored by mass spectrometric technique, the smaller anions favoring tetrahedral cages, while the larger anions supporting octahedral cages. Additionally, the KBr-based cage thin films exhibited prominent enhancement of their third-order NLO responses in two or three orders of magnitude compared to those obtained for their corresponding solutions. This work not only provides a new methodology to build irregular polyhedral structures in a controlled and tunable way but also provides access to new kinds of promising functional optical materials.

Two Heterometallic Nanoclusters [DyIII4NiII8] and [DyIII10MnIII4MnII2]: Structure, Assembly Mechanism, and Magnetic Properties

A full understanding of the assembly mechanisms of coordination complexes is of great importance for a directional synthesis under control. We thus explored here the formation mechanisms of the two new heterometallic nanoclusters [Dy^III₄Ni^II₈(μ₃-OH)₈(L)₈(OAc)₄(H₂O)₄]·3.25EtOH·4CH₃CN (1) and [Dy^III₁₀Mn^III₄Mn^II₂O₄(OH)₁₂(OAc)₁₆(L)₄(HL)₂(EtOH)₂]·2EtOH·2CH₃CN·2H₂O (2) with different cubane-based squarelike ring structures, which were obtained from the reactions of 4-bromo-2-[(2-hydroxypropylimino)methyl]phenol (H₂L) with Dy(NO)₃·6H₂O and the transition metal salt Ni(OAc)₂·4H₂O or Mn(OAc)₂·4H₂O. The high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) tests showed that the skeletons of clusters 1 and 2 have a high stability under the measurement conditions for HRESI-MS. The intermediates formed in the reaction courses of clusters 1 and 2 were tracked using time-dependent HRESI-MS, which helped to determine the proposed hierarchical assembly mechanisms for 1 (H₂L → NiL → Ni₂L₂ → Ni₃L₄ → Ni₄L₄ → DyNi₄L₅ → Dy₂Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₇L₇ → Dy₄Ni₈L₈) and 2 (H₂L → MnL → DyMnL → DyMn₂L → Dy₂Mn₂L_x → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x and H₂L → DyL → Dy₄L₂ → Dy₆L₂ → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x). This is one of the rare examples of investigating the assembly mechanisms of 3d-4f heterometallic clusters. Magnetic studies indicated that the title complexes both show slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and cluster 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet.

Surface chemistry of metal-organic polyhedra

Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are discrete, intrinsically-porous architectures that operate at the molecular regime and, owing to peripheral reactive sites, exhibit rich surface chemistry. Researchers have recently exploited this reactivity through post-synthetic modification (PSM) to generate specialised molecular platforms that may overcome certain limitations of extended porous materials. Indeed, the combination of modular solubility, orthogonal reactive sites, and accessible cavities yields a highly versatile molecular platform for solution to solid-state applications. In this feature article, we discuss representative examples of the PSM chemistry of MOPs, from proof-of-concept studies to practical applications, and highlight future directions for the MOP field.

Photo/Electrochromic Dual Responsive Behavior of a Cage-like Zr(IV)-Viologen Metal-Organic Polyhedron (MOP)

Stable stimulus-responsive materials are highly desirable due to their widespread potential applications and growing demand in recent decades. Despite the fact that viologen derivatives have long been known as excellent photochromic and electrochromic materials, the development of stable viologen-based multifunctional smart materials with short coloration times remains an exciting topic. To obtain photochromic and electrochromic dual responsive materials, embedding the viologen ligand into a robust metal oxide cluster to increase its stability and sensitivity is an effective strategy. Herein, a viologen-based metal-organic polyhedron (MOP) {[Zr₆L₃(μ₃-O)₂(μ₂-OH)₆Cp₆]·8Cl·CH₃OH·DMF} [Zr-MOP-1; H₂L·2Cl = 1,1'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride, and Cp = η⁵-C₅H₅] was successfully prepared and characterized. It consists of trinuclear Zr-oxygen secondary building units and exhibits reversible photochromic and electrochromic dual responsive behaviors. As expected, the designed robust viologen-based nanocage with a V₂E₃ (V = vertex, and E = edge) topology can maintain its stability and rapid photo/electrochromic behaviors with an obvious reversible change in color from purple (brown) to green, mainly due to the enclosed cluster structure and the abundant free viologen radicals that originate from the effective Cl → N and O → N electron transfers. Spectroelectrochemistry and theoretical calculations of this Zr-MOP were also performed to verify the chromic mechanism.

Adaptive coordination assemblies based on a flexible tetraazacyclododecane ligand for promoting carbon dioxide fixation

Coordination hosts based on flexible ligands have received increasing attention due to their inherent adaptive cavities that often show induced-fit guest binding and catalysis like enzymes. Herein, we report the controlled self-assembly of a series of homo/heterometallic coordination hosts (Me₄enPd)_2n(ML)_n [n = 2/3; M = Zn(ii)/Co(ii)/Ni(ii)/Cu(ii)/Pd(ii)/Ag(i); Me₄en: N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine] with different shapes (tube/cage) from a flexible tetraazacyclododecane-based pyridinyl ligand (L) and cis-blocking Me₄enPd(ii) units. While the Ag(i)-metalated ligand (AgL) gave rise to the formation of a (Me₄enPd)₄(ML)₂-type cage, all other M(ii) ions led to isostructural (Me₄enPd)₆(ML)₃-type tubular complexes. Structural transformations between cages and tubes could be realized through transmetalation of the ligand. The buffering effect on the ML panels endows the coordination tubes with remarkable acid–base resistance, which makes the (Me₄enPd)₆(ZnL)₃ host an effective catalyst for the CO₂ to CO₃²⁻ conversion. Control experiments suggested that the integration of multiple active Zn(ii) sites on the tubular host and the perfect geometry match between CO₃²⁻ and the cavity synergistically promoted such a conversion. Our results provide an important strategy for the design of adaptive coordination hosts to achieve efficient carbon fixation.

Permanent Porosity in Hydroxamate Titanium-Organic Polyhedra

Following the synthesis of hydroxamate titanium-organic frameworks, we now extend these siderophore-type linkers to the assembly of the first titanium-organic polyhedra displaying permanent porosity. Mixed-linker versions of this molecular cage (cMUV-11) are also used to demonstrate the effect of pore chemistry in accessing high surface areas of near 1200 m²·g^-1.

Artificial Biomolecular Channels: Enantioselective Transmembrane Transport of Amino Acids Mediated by Homochiral Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages

Natural transport channels (or carriers), such as aquaporins, are a distinct type of biomacromolecule capable of highly effective transmembrane transport of water or ions. Such behavior is routine for biology but has proved difficult to achieve in synthetic systems. Perhaps most significantly, the enantioselective transmembrane transport of biomolecules is an especially challenging problem both for chemists and for natural systems. Herein, a group of homochiral zirconium metal-organic cages with four triangular opening windows have been proposed as artificial biomolecular channels for enantioselective transmembrane transport of natural amino acids. These structurally well-defined coordination cages are assembled from six synthetically accessible BINOL-derived chiral ligands as spacers and four n-Bu₃-Cp₃Zr₃ clusters as vertices, forming tetrahedral-shaped architectures that feature an intrinsically chiral cavity decorated with an array of specifically positioned binding sites mediated from phenol to phenyl ether to crown ether groups. Fascinatingly, the transformation of single-molecule chirality to global supramolecular chirality within the space-restricted chiral microenvironments accompanies unprecedented chiral amplification, leading to the enantiospecific recognition of amino acids. By virtue of the highly structural stability and excellent biocompatibility, the orientation-independent cages can be molecularly embedded into lipid membranes, biomimetically serving as single-molecular chiral channels for polar-residue amino acids, with the properties that cage-1 featuring hydroxyl groups preferentially transports the l-asparagine, whereas cage-2 attaching crown ether groups spontaneously favor transporting d-arginine. We therefore develop a new type of self-assembled system that can potentially mimic the functions of transmembrane proteins in nature, which is a realistic candidate for further biomedical applications.

A Series of Functionalized Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages for Efficient CO2/N2 Separation

Global warming associated with CO₂ emission has led to frequent extreme weather events in recent years. Carbon capture using porous solid adsorbents is promising for addressing the greenhouse effect. Herein, we report a series of robust metal-organic cages (MOCs) featuring various functional groups, such as methyl and amine groups, for CO₂/N₂ separation. Significantly, the amine-group-functionalized MOC-QW-3-NH₂ displays the best selective CO₂ adsorption performance, as confirmed by single-component adsorption and transient breakthrough experiments. The distinct CO₂ adsorption mechanism has been well studied via theoretical calculations, confirming that the amine groups play a vital role for efficiently selective CO₂ adsorption resulting from hierarchical adsorbate-framework interaction.
