Direct-Bandgap 2D Silver–Bismuth Iodide Double Perovskite: The Structure-Directing Influence of an Oligothiophene Spacer Cation

Overcoming Intrinsic Quantum Confinement and Ultrafast Self-Trapping in Ag-Bi-I- and Cu-Bi-I-Based 2D Double Perovskites through Electroactive Cations

The possibility to combine organic semiconducting materials with inorganic halide perovskites opens exciting pathways toward tuning optoelectronic properties. Exploring stable and nontoxic, double perovskites as a host for electroactive organic cations to form two-dimensional (2D) hybrid materials is an emerging opportunity to create both functional and lead-free materials for optoelectronic applications. By introducing naphthalene and pyrene moieties into Ag-Bi-I and Cu-Bi-I double perovskite lattices, intrinsic electronic challenges of double perovskites are addressed and the electronic anisotropy of 2D perovskites can be modulated. (POE)4AgBiI8 containing pyrene moieties in the 2D layers was selected from a total of eight new 2D double perovskites, exhibiting a favorable electronic band structure with a type IIb multiple quantum well system based on a layer architecture suitable for out-of-plane conductivity and leading to a photocurrent response ratio of almost 3 orders of magnitude under AM1.5G illumination. Finally, an exclusively parallelly oriented thin film of (POE)4AgBiI8 was integrated into a device to construct the first pure n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper 2D double perovskite solar cell.

Investigating the potential of triclinic ABSe3 (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; B = Si, Ge, Sn) perovskites as a new class of lead-free photovoltaic materials

In recent years, chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates with favorable structural, electrical, and optical properties for photovoltaic applications. This paper explores the structural, electronic, and optical characteristics of ABSe3 perovskites (where A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; B = Si, Ge, Sn) in their triclinic crystallographic phases using density functional theory. The stability of these materials is ensured by calculating formation energies, tolerance factors (Tf), and phonon dispersion. The Eform values of all ABSe3 are negative, suggesting favorable thermodynamic stability. The Tf values range between 0.82 and 1.1, which is consistent with stable perovskites. The phonon dispersion analysis of the chalcogenide perovskites revealed no imaginary frequencies in any of the vibrational modes, confirming their stability. The electronic band structures and corresponding density of states are computed to unveil the semiconducting nature of the studied compounds. These perovskites are promising for high-performance solar cells due to their indirect bandgaps (Eg, 1.10-2.33 eV) and a small difference between these indirect and direct gaps (0.149-0.493 eV). The Eg values increase as the ionic radii of A-site elements increase (Li < Na < K < Rb < Cs). At the B-site, Si-based chalcogenides have the largest Eg values, followed by Sn-based and then Ge-based materials. Furthermore, optical properties such as the real part and imaginary part of the dielectric function, refractive index extinction coefficient, optical conductivity, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, and energy loss are predicted within the energy range of 0-50 eV. Several ABSe3 materials, particularly LiGeSe3 and NaGeSe3, demonstrated optical properties comparable to both traditional and emerging materials, suggesting their potential for effective use in solar cells.

New Lead-free Hybrid Layered Double Perovskite Halides: Synthesis, Structural Transition and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

Hybrid layered double perovskites (HLDPs), representing the two-dimensional manifestation of halide double perovskites, have elicited considerable interest owing to their intricate chemical bonding hierarchy and structural diversity. This intensified interest stems from the diverse options available for selecting alternating octahedral coordinated trivalent [M(III)] and monovalent metal centers [M(I)], along with the distinctive nature of the cationic organic amine located between the layers. Here, we have synthesized three new compounds with general formula (R'/R'')4/2M(III)M(I)Cl8; where R'=C3H7NH3 (i.e. 3N) and R''=NH3C4H8NH3 (i.e. 4N4); M(III)=In3+ or Ru3+; M(I)=Cu+ by simple solution-based acid precipitation method. The structural analysis reveals that (4N4)2CuInCl8 and (4N4)2CuRuCl8 adopt the layered Dion Jacobson (DJ) structure, whereas (3N)4CuInCl8 exhibits layered Ruddlesden Popper (RP) structure. The alternative octahedra within the inorganic layer display distortions and tilting. Three compounds show temperature-dependent structural phase transitions where changes in the staking of inorganic layer, extent of octahedral tilting and reorientation of organic spacers with temperature have been noticed. We have achieved ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κL) in the HLDPs in the 2 to 300 K range, marking a distinctive feature within the realm of HLDP systems. The RP-HLDP compound, (3N)4CuInCl8, demonstrates anisotropy in κL while measured parallel and perpendicular to layer stacking, showcasing ultralow κL of 0.15 Wm-1K-1 at room temperature, which is one of the lowest values obtained among Pb-free metal halide perovskite. The observed ultralow κL in three new HLDPs is attributed to significant lattice anharmonicity arising from the chemical bonding heterogeneity and soft crystal structure, which resulted in low-energy localized optical phonon modes that suppress heat-carrying acoustic phonons.

Hydrogen Bonding Analysis of Structural Transition-Induced Symmetry Breaking and Spin Splitting in a Hybrid Perovskite Employing a Synergistic Diffraction-DFT Approach

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) offer an outstanding opportunity for spin-related technologies owing in part to their tunable structural symmetry breaking and distortions driven by organic-inorganic hydrogen (H) bonds. However, understanding how H-bonds tailor inorganic symmetry and distortions and therefore enhance spin splitting for more effective spin manipulation remains imprecise due to challenges in measuring H atom positions using X-ray diffraction. Here, we report a thermally induced structural transition (at ∼209 K) for a 2D HOIP, (2-BrPEA)2PbI4 [2-BrPEA = 2-(2-bromophenyl)ethylammonium], which induces inversion asymmetry and a strong spin splitting (ΔE > 30 meV). While X-ray diffraction generally establishes heavy atom coordinates, we utilize neutron diffraction for accurate H atom position determination, demonstrating that the structural transition-induced rearrangement of H-bonds with distinct bond strengths asymmetrically shifts associated iodine atom positions. Consequences of this shift include an increased structural asymmetry, an enhanced difference between adjacent interoctahedra distortions (i.e., Pb-I-Pb bond angles), and therefore significant spin splitting. We further show that H-only density-functional theory (DFT) relaxation of the X-ray structure shifts H atoms to positions that are consistent with the neutron experimental data, validating a convenient pathway to more generally improve upon HOIP H-bonding analyses derived from quicker/less-expensive X-ray data.

What Matters for the Charge Transport of 2D Perovskites?

Compared to 3D perovskites, 2D perovskites exhibit excellent stability, structural diversity, and tunable bandgaps, making them highly promising for applications in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. However, the trade-off for worse charge transport is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. This comprehensive review first discusses the structure of 3D and 2D metal halide perovskites, then summarizes the significant factors influencing charge transport in detail and provides a brief overview of the testing methods. Subsequently, various strategies to improve the charge transport are presented, including tuning A'-site organic spacer cations, A-site cations, B-site metal cations, and X-site halide ions. Finally, an outlook on the future development of improving the 2D perovskites' charge transport is discussed.

Direction Dependent Ferroelectricity and Conductivity in a Single Crystal 2D Halide Double Perovskite

Halide ferroelectric materials have garnered a lot of interest because of their distinctive electrical and structural characteristics. In this study, the design and development of a new non-centrosymmetric 2D layered halide double perovskite material, Cl1.14Br2.86PA4AgInBr8 (CPAIn) is reported. This material shows ferroelectric properties above room temperature, with a Curie temperature of 190 °C. This behavior is achieved through the substitution of the halogenated A-site organic linker, 3-chloropropylammonium. CPAIn exhibits anisotropic ferroelectric behavior with higher spontaneous polarization of 6.25 µC cm-2 along the perpendicular direction to the octahedral layers, whereas the value decreases to 0.174 µC cm-2 between sheets. While using bottom contact to study the nature of polarity within a sheet, the P-E loop displays capacitive loop. The nature and value of polarization is highly direction dependent, and to further understand the mechanism of conduction, a combination of temperature-dependent impedance studies and poling dependent conductivity techniques are employed. These directional dependent properties hold immense potential in memory devices, sensors and photovoltaics, piezoelectric devices and energy storage.

Structural Diversity in 2-(2-Aminoethyl)pyridine-Based Lead Iodide Hybrids

While 2D metal-organic hybrids have emerged as promising solar absorbers due to their improved moisture stability, their inferior transport properties limit their potential translation into devices. We report a new hybrid containing 2-(2-ammonioethyl)pyridine [(2-AEP)+], forming a 2D hybrid with the composition (2-AEP)2PbI4. The organic bilayer comprises of (2-AEP)+, which is arranged in a face-to-face stacking that promotes π-π interactions between neighboring pyridyl rings. We also demonstrate the structural diversity of 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine-based lead iodide hybrids in solution-processed films. This report highlights the importance of solution-processing conditions in trying to obtain single-phase films of hybrids containing dibasic organic species.

Optoelectronic insights of lead-free layered halide perovskites

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for a multitude of optoelectronic technologies, owing to their versatile structure and electronic properties. The optical and electronic properties are harmoniously integrated with both the inorganic metal halide octahedral slab, and the organic spacer layer. The inorganic octahedral layers can also assemble into periodically stacked nanoplatelets, which are interconnected by the organic ammonium cation, resulting in the formation of a superlattice or superstructure. In this perspective, we explore the structural, electronic, and optical properties of lead-free hybrid halides, and the layered halide perovskite single crystals and nanostructures, expanding our understanding of the diverse applications enabled by these versatile structures. The optical properties of the layered halide perovskite single crystals and superlattices are a function of the organic spacer layer thickness, the metal center with either divalent or a combination of monovalent and trivalent cations, and the halide composition. The distinct absorption and emission features are guided by the structural deformation, electron-phonon coupling, and the polaronic effect. Among the diverse optoelectronic possibilities, we have focused on the photodetection capability of layered halide perovskite single crystals, and elucidated the descriptors such as excitonic band gap, effective mass, carrier mobility, Rashba splitting, and the spin texture that decides the direct component of the optical transitions.

Breaking the bottleneck of lead-free perovskite solar cells through dimensionality modulation

The emerging perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has attracted significant attention due to its superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) among the thin-film photovoltaic technologies. However, the toxicity of lead and poor stability of lead halide materials hinder their commercialization. In this case, after a decade of effort, various categories of lead-free perovskites and perovskite-like materials have been developed, including tin halide perovskites, double perovskites, defect-structured perovskites, and rudorffites. However, the performance of the corresponding devices still falls short of expectations, especially their PCE. The limitations mainly originate from either the unstable lattice structure of these materials, which causes the distortion of their octahedra, or their low dimensionality (e.g., structural and electronic dimensionality)-correlated poor carrier transport and self-trapping effect, accelerating nonradiative recombination. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the structures and performance in these emerging candidates and leveraging these insights to design or modify new lead-free perovskites is of great significance. Herein, we review the variety of dimensionalities in different categories of lead-free perovskites and perovskite-like materials and conclude that dimensionality is an important aspect among the crucial indexes that determine the performance of lead-free PSCs. In addition, we summarize the modulation of both structural and electronic dimensionality, and the corresponding enhanced optoelectronic properties in different categories. Finally, perspectives on the future development of lead-free perovskites and perovskite-like materials for photovoltaic applications are provided. We hope that this review will provide researchers with a concise overview of these emerging materials and help them leverage dimensionality to break the bottleneck in photovoltaic applications.

Fine Tuning Ag(I)-Sb(III) Hybrid Iodides for Light Detection

Lead-free hybrid double perovskite iodides (HDPIs) have piqued increasing research interest due to their environmental friendliness and high stability. However, such antimony-based HDPIs with strong photocurrent response are currently very limited. Here, we successfully design and construct five Ag(I)-Sb(III)-based HDPIs using two types of cyclic aliphatic amines as A-site templates. Interestingly, these Ag(I)-Sb(III) HDPIs exhibit relatively narrow band gaps, preferred orientation, and high stability after being processed into thin films on the indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Notably, under illuminations of a xenon lamp, all HDPIs exhibit considerable photocurrent responses, reaching a maximum difference of 17 μA·cm-2 for ASI 1, which is the highest among lead-free halogen-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds to date. Combining the considerable photocurrents and the high stability, the optoelectronic applications of two-dimensional Ag(I)-Sb(III) HDPIs can be expected.

Molecular Design of Layered Hybrid Silver Bismuth Bromine Single Crystal for Ultra-Stable X-Ray Detection With Record Sensitivity

Nowadays, weak interlayer coupling and unclear mechanism in layered hybrid silver bismuth bromine (LH-AgBiBr) are the main reasons for limiting its further enhanced X-ray detection sensitivity and stability. Herein, the design rules for LH-AgBiBr and its influence on X-ray detection performance are reported for the first time. Although shortening amine size can enhance interlayer coupling, its detection performance is severely hampered by its easier defect formation caused by enlarged micro strain. In contrast, an appropriate divalent amine design endows the material with improved interlayer coupling and released micro strain, which benefits crystal stability and mechanical hardness. Another contribution is to increase material density and dielectric constant; thus, enhancing X-ray absorption and carrier transport. Consequently, the optimized parallel device based on BDA2 AgBiBr8 achieves a record sensitivity of 2638 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 and an ultra-low detection limit of 7.4 nGyair s-1 , outperforming other reported LH-AgBiBr X-ray detectors. Moreover, the unencapsulated device displays remarkable anti-moisture, anti-thermal (>150 °C), and anti-radiation (>1000 Gyair ) endurance. Eventually, high-resolution hard X-ray imaging is demonstrated by linear detector arrays under a benign dose rate (1.63 µGyair s-1 ) and low external bias (5 V). Hence, these findings provide guidelines for future materials design and device optimization.

Optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of novel stable lead-free cubic double perovskites A2NaIO6 (A = Ca, Sr) for renewable energy applications

Over the past decade, perovskites have received considerable attention because of their record power conversion efficiency (25.7%) in solar cells. These materials have also received recent research interest in thermoelectrics, most likely due to their high carrier mobility, large power factor, and ultralow thermal conductivity. Therefore, in the present work, we have examined the optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of A2NaIO6 (A = Ca, Sr) double perovskites using first-principles calculations. Stability has been confirmed using reliable and accurate descriptors of formation energy and phonon calculations. The optimized lattice constant and volume show an increasing tendency with changing A site cation (Ca → Sr). The computed band structures depict the semiconducting nature with direct band gap values of 2.64 eV (Ca2NaIO6) and 2.48 eV (Sr2NaIO6). The absorption was found to start in the visible range where the reflectivity was less than 10%. Moreover, the high Seebeck coefficient, large electrical conductivity, and fairly low thermal conductivity result in ZT values of 0.724 for Ca2NaIO6 and 0.686 for Sr2NaIO6 at 1000 K. With their optimum band gap, excellent light absorption capacity, and high ZT values, A2NaIO6 emerge as promising candidates for optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications.

Mapping Uncharted Lead-Free Halide Perovskites and Related Low-Dimensional Structures

Research on perovskites has grown exponentially in the past decade due to the potential of methyl ammonium lead iodide in photovoltaics. Although these devices have achieved remarkable and competitive power conversion efficiency, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of lead and its impact on scaling up the technology. Eliminating lead while conserving the performance of photovoltaic devices is a great challenge. To achieve this goal, the research has been expanded to thousands of compounds with similar or loosely related crystal structures and compositions. Some materials are "re-discovered", and some are yet unexplored, but predictions suggest that their potential applications may go beyond photovoltaics, for example, spintronics, photodetection, photocatalysis, and many other areas. This short review aims to present the classification, some current mapping strategies, and advances of lead-free halide double perovskites, their derivatives, lead-free perovskitoid, and low-dimensional related crystals.

Universal machine learning aided synthesis approach of two-dimensional perovskites in a typical laboratory

The past decade has witnessed the significant efforts in novel material discovery in the use of data-driven techniques, in particular, machine learning (ML). However, since it needs to consider the precursors, experimental conditions, and availability of reactants, material synthesis is generally much more complex than property and structure prediction, and very few computational predictions are experimentally realized. To solve these challenges, a universal framework that integrates high-throughput experiments, a priori knowledge of chemistry, and ML techniques such as subgroup discovery and support vector machine is proposed to guide the experimental synthesis of materials, which is capable of disclosing structure-property relationship hidden in high-throughput experiments and rapidly screening out materials with high synthesis feasibility from vast chemical space. Through application of our approach to challenging and consequential synthesis problem of 2D silver/bismuth organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, we have increased the success rate of the synthesis feasibility by a factor of four relative to traditional approaches. This study provides a practical route for solving multidimensional chemical acceleration problems with small dataset from typical laboratory with limited experimental resources available.

0D Pyramid-intercalated 2D Bimetallic Halides with Tunable Electronic Structures and Enhanced Emission under Pressure

Hybrid metal halides are emerging semiconductors as promising candidates for optoelectronics. The pursuit of hybridizing various dimensions of metal halides remains a desirable yet highly complex endeavor. By utilizing dimension engineering, a diverse array of new materials with intrinsically different electronic and optical properties has been developed. Here, we report a new family of 2D-0D hybrid bimetallic halides, (C6 N2 H14 )2 SbCdCl9  ⋅ 2H2 O (SbCd) and (C6 N2 H14 )2 SbCuCl9  ⋅ 2H2 O (SbCu). These compounds adopt a new layered structure, consisting of alternating 0D square pyramidal [SbCl5 ] and 2D inorganic layers sandwiched by organic layers. SbCd and SbCu have optical band gaps of 3.3 and 2.3 eV, respectively. These compounds exhibit weak photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature, and the PL gradually enhances with decreasing temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SbCd and SbCu are direct gap semiconductors, where first-principles band gaps follow the experimental trend. Moreover, given the different pressure responses of 0D and 2D components, these materials exhibit highly tunable electronic structures during compression, where a remarkable 11 times enhancement in PL emission is observed for SbCd at 19 GPa. This work opens new avenues for designing new layered bimetallic halides and further manipulating their structures and optoelectronic properties via pressure.

A New 3D Iodoargentate Hybrid: Structure, Optical/Photoelectric Performance and Theoretical Research

The explorations of new three-dimensional (3D) microporous metal halides, especially the iodoargentate-based hybrids, and understanding of their structure-activity relationships are still quite essential but full of great challenges. Herein, with the aromatic 4,4'-dpa (4,4'-dpa = 4,4'-dipyridylamine) ligands as the structural directing agents, we solvothermal synthesized and structurally characterized a novel member of microporous iodoargentate family, namely [H2-4,4'-dpa]Ag6I8 (1). Compound 1 possesses a unique and complicated 3D [Ag6I8]n2n- anionic architecture that was built up from the unusual hexameric [Ag6I13] secondary building units (SBUs). Research on optical properties indicated that compound 1 exhibited semiconductor behavior, with an optical band gap of 2.50 eV. Under the alternate irradiation of light, prominent photoelectric switching abilities could be achieved by compound [H2-4,4'-dpa]Ag6I8, whose photocurrent densities (0.37 μA·cm-2 for visible light and 1.23 μA·cm-2 for full-spectrum) compared well with or exceeded those of some high-performance halide counterparts. Further theoretical calculations revealed that the relatively dispersed conduction bands (CBs) structures in compound 1 induced higher electron mobilities, which may be responsible for its good photoelectricity. Presented in this work also comprised the analyses of Hirshfeld surface, powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), thermogravimetric measurement, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDX) along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Stacking Arrangement and Orientation of Aromatic Cations Tune Bandgap and Charge Transport of 2D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites

Chemical modifications on aromatic spacers of 2D perovskites have been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to simultaneously improve optoelectronic properties and stability. However, its underlying mechanism is poorly understood. By using 2D phenyl-based perovskites ([C6 H5 (CH2 )m NH3 ]2 PbI4 ) as models, the authors have revealed how the chemical nature of aromatic cations tunes the bandgap and charge transport of 2D perovskites by utilizing sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy to determine the stacking arrangement and orientation of aromatic cations. It is found that the antiparallel slip-stack arrangement of phenyl rings between adjacent layers induces an indirect band gap, resulting in anomalous carrier dynamics. Incorporation of the CH2 moiety causes stacking rearrangement of the phenyl ring and thus promotes an indirect to direct bandgap transition. In direct-bandgap perovskites, higher carrier mobility correlates with a larger orientation angle of the phenyl ring. Further optimizing the orientation angle by introducing a para-substituted element in a phenyl ring, higher carrier mobility is obtained. This work highlights the importance of leveraging stacking arrangement and orientation of the aromatic cations to tune the photophysical properties, which opens up an avenue for advancing high-performance 2D perovskites optoelectronics via molecular engineering.

Transition from Dion-Jacobson hybrid layered double perovskites to 1D perovskites for ultraviolet to visible photodetection

New perovskite phases having diverse optoelectronic properties are the need of the hour. We present five variations of R2AgM(iii)X8, where R = NH3C4H8NH3 (4N4) or NH3C6H12NH3 (6N6); M(iii) = Bi3+ or Sb3+; and X = Br- or I-, by tuning the composition of (4N4)2AgBiBr8, a structurally rich hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP). (4N4)2AgBiBr8, (4N4)2AgSbBr8, and (6N6)2AgBiBr8 crystallize as Dion-Jacobson (DJ) HLDPs, whereas 1D (6N6)SbBr5, (4N4)-BiI and (4N4)-SbI have trans-connected chains by corner-shared octahedra. Ag+ stays out of the 1D lattice either when SbBr63- distortion is high or if Ag+ needs to octahedrally coordinate with I-. Band structure calculations show a direct bandgap for all the bromide phases except (6N6)2AgBiBr8. (4N4)2AgBiBr8 with lower octahedral tilt shows a maximum UV responsivity of 18.8 ± 0.2 A W-1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6360 ± 58%, at 2.5 V. When self-powered (0 V), (4N4)-SbI has the best responsivity of 11.7 ± 0.2 mA W-1 under 485 nm visible light, with fast photoresponse ≤100 ms.

Pressure-induced distinct excitonic properties of 2D perovskites with isomeric organic molecules for spacer cations

Spacer organic cations in two-dimensional (2D) perovskites play vital roles in inducing structural distortion of the inorganic components and dominating unique excitonic properties. However, there is still little understanding of spacer organic cations with identical chemical formulas, and different configurations have an impact on the excitonic dynamics. Herein, we investigate and compare the evolution of the structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties of [CH₃(CH₂)₄NH₃]₂PbI₄ ((PA)₂PbI₄) and [(CH₃)₂CH(CH₂)₂NH₃]₂PbI₄ ((PNA)₂PbI₄) with isomeric organic molecules for spacer cations by combining steady-state absorption, PL, Raman and time-resolved PL spectra under high pressures. Intriguingly, the band gap is continuously tuned under pressure and decreased to 1.6 eV at 12.5 GPa for (PA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites. Simultaneously, multiple phase transitions occur and the carrier lifetimes are prolonged. In contrast, the PL intensity of (PNA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites exhibits an almost 15-fold enhancement at 1.3 GPa and an ultrabroad spectral range of up to 300 nm in the visible region at 7.48 GPa. These results indicate that the isomeric organic cations (PA⁺ and PNA⁺) with different configurations significantly mediate distinct excitonic behaviors due to different resilience to high pressures and reveal a novel interaction mechanism between organic spacer cations and inorganic layers under compression. Our findings not only shed light on the vital roles of isomeric organic molecules as organic spacer cations in 2D perovskites under pressure, but also open a route to rationally design highly efficient 2D perovskites incorporating such spacer organic molecules in optoelectronic devices.

Revealing the Mechanism of Pressure-Induced Emission in Layered Silver-Bismuth Double Perovskites

Pressure-induced emission (PIE) associated with self-trapping excitons (STEs) in low-dimensional halide perovskites has attracted great attention for better materials-by-design. Here, using 2D layered double perovskite (C₆ H₅ CH₂ CH₂ NH₃ ⁺ )₄ AgBiBr₈ as a model system, we advance a fundamental physicochemical mechanism of the PIE from the perspective of carrier dynamics and excited-state behaviors of local lattice distortion. We observed a pressure-driven STE transformation from dark to bright states, corresponding a strong broadband Stokes-shifted emission. Further theoretical analysis demonstrated that the suppressed lattice distortion and enhanced electronic dimensionality in the excited-state play an important role in the formation of stabilized bright STEs, which could manipulate the self-trapping energy and lattice deformation energy to form an energy barrier between the potential energy curves of ground- and excited-state, and enhance the electron-hole orbital overlap, respectively.

Discovering layered lead-free perovskite solar absorbers via cation transmutation

For the exploration of stable lead-free perovskites for solar cell applications, we propose a series of Dion-Jacobson (DJ) double perovskites with the formula BDA₂M_IM_IIIX₈ (BDA = 1,4-butanediamine) by substituting two Pb²⁺ in BDAPbI₄ with an M_I⁺ (Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, Cu⁺, Ag⁺, and Au⁺) and M_III³⁺ (Bi³⁺, In³⁺, and Sb³⁺) pair. First-principles calculations demonstrated the thermal stabilities of all the proposed BDA₂M_IM_IIIX₈ perovskites. The electronic properties of BDA₂M_IM_IIIX₈ depend strongly on the choice of M_I⁺ + M_III³⁺ and the structural archetype, and three out of 54 candidates with suitable solar band gaps and superior optoelectronic properties were selected for photovoltaic application. A highest theoretical maximal efficiency of over 31.6% is predicted for BDA₂AuBiI₈. The DJ-structure-induced interlayer interaction of apical I-I atoms is found to play a crucial role in promoting the optoelectronic performance of the selected candidates. This study provides a new concept for designing lead-free perovskites for efficient solar cells.

A semiconductive copper iodobismuthate hybrid: structure, optical properties and photocurrent response

Pursuits of new types of Pb-free heterometallic halides adequate for photovoltaic applications are still urgent but challenging. In this study, by using in situ-produced [(Me)₂-(DABCO)]²⁺ (DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane; Me = methyl) cations as structure-directing agents, we successfully constructed a non-perovskite copper iodobismuthate hybrid, namely [(Me)₂-(DABCO)]₂Cu₂Bi₂I₁₂ (1), which features discrete [Cu₂Bi₂I₁₂]^4- anionic moieties formed by the building units of [CuI₄] tetrahedra and [BiI₆] octahedra. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance analyses showed that compound 1 possesses semiconductive behaviors with a narrow optical bandgap of 1.80 eV. More importantly, it exhibits excellent photoelectric switching abilities, and its photocurrent density (2.30 μA cm^-2) far exceeds those of some high-performance halide-based counterparts. Different from many heterometallic analogues, noteworthily, it also has dispersive band structure and strong electronic coupling near the Fermi level, resulting in a material with small effective masses that may be responsible for the good photoelectricity. This study may offer new guidance for the design and synthesis of eco-friendly heterometallic halides with unique structures and desirable properties.

Near-room-temperature martensitic actuation profited from one-dimensional hybrid perovskite structure

Martensitic transformation, usually accompanied by ferroelastic and thermoelastic behaviors, is an interesting and useful mechanical-related property upon external stimuli. For molecular crystals, however, martensitic systems to show reversible stimuli-actuation behaviors are still limited because of a lack of designability and frequent crystal collapse due to large stress releases during the transformations. Here, a one-dimensional hybrid perovskite semiconductor (NMEA)PbI₃ (NMEA = N-methylethylammonium) was prepared by following a dimensionality reduction design principle. The crystal undergoes reversible ferroelastic and thermoelastic martensitic transformations, which are attributed to weak intermolecular interactions among the chains that easily trigger the interchain shearing movement. The actuation behavior occurring during the phase transition is very close to room temperature and demonstrated to behave as a mechanical actuator for switching. This work provides an effective approach to designing molecular actuators with promising applications in next-generation intelligence devices.

Ultrasensitive Optical Thermometry via Inhibiting the Energy Transfer in Zero-Dimensional Lead-Free Metal Halide Single Crystals

Self-referencing optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) have drawn extensive attention as a result of their high sensitivity and non-invasively fast response to temperature. However, it is a great challenge for luminescent materials to achieve simultaneously high absolute and relative temperature sensitivity based on the FIR technique. Herein, we developed a novel optical thermometer by designing hybrid lead-free metal halide (TTPhP)₂MnCl₄:Sb³⁺ (TTPhP⁺ = tetraphenylphosphonium cation) single crystals with multimodal photoluminescence (PL). The large TTPhP⁺ organic chain resulted in isolated [MnCl₄]^2- and [SbCl₅]^2- in the single crystal, which leads to a negligible energy trasfer process within them. Therefore, the two PL bands (band 1 from [MnCl₄]^2-) with a peak at 518 nm and band 2 (from [SbCl₅]²) with a peak at 640 nm exhibit different thermal-quenching effects, which resulted in excellent temperature sensitivity, with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities reaching 0.236 K^-1 and 3.77% K^-1 in a temperature range from 300 to 400 K. Both the absolute and relative sensitivities are among the highest values for luminescence thermometry.

[SMe3]2[Bi2Ag2I10], a silver iodido bismuthate with an unusually small band gap

Iodido metalates of heavy main group elements have seen much research interest in the last years due to their possible application as absorbers in photovoltaics. However, for materials based on the non-toxic element bismuth one challenge lies in narrowing the optical band gap for sufficient solar absorption. Here, we present a new iodido silver bismuthate, [SMe₃]₂[Bi₂Ag₂I₁₀] (1), which is prepared from solution and characterized regarding its structure, thermal stability and optical absorption. While compounds with similar anion compositions are known, the band gap of 1.82 eV is the smallest in chain-like Bi/Ag/I-compounds that has been reported to date. To support our experimental findings we carried out computational investigations and were able to reproduce the surprisingly narrow band gap, highlighting the subtle influence of the connectivity of different building units in multinary bismuthates. We also prepared and characterized the simple iodido pentelates [SMe]₃[E₂I₉] (E = Bi, Sb; 2, 3) to provide a point of comparison.

A new metal complex-templated silver iodobismuthate exhibiting photocurrent response and photocatalytic property

An organic-inorganic hybrid silver iodobismuthate characteristic of the infrequent [Ag₂BiI₆L₂] cluster (L = I or I₃) and with a unique Ag/Bi molar ratio (2/1), namely, [Zn(bipy)₃]₂Ag₂BiI₆(I)_1.355(I₃)_1.645 (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; 1), was solvothermally synthesized, and structurally, optically, and theoretically studied. Intriguingly, compound 1 exhibited semiconductor behavior with an optical band gap of 2.33 eV, which endowed it with excellent photoelectric and photocatalytic properties. Electronic structure calculations further revealed that the relative separate conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) in compound 1 may be responsible for the good optical activity. This study also includes the Hirshfeld surface analyses, thermogravimetric measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization.

Kinetically Controlled Structural Transitions in Layered Halide-Based Perovskites: An Approach to Modulate Spin Splitting

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) semiconductors with pronounced spin splitting, mediated by strong spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking, offer the potential for spin manipulation in future spintronic applications. However, HOIPs exhibiting significant conduction/valence band splitting are still relatively rare, given the generally observed preference for (near)centrosymmetric inorganic (especially lead-iodide-based) sublattices, and few approaches are available to control this symmetry breaking within a given HOIP. Here, we demonstrate, using (S-2-MeBA)₂PbI₄ (S-2-MeBA = (S)-(-)-2-methylbutylammonium) as an example, that a temperature-induced structural transition (at ∼180 K) serves to change the degree of chirality transfer to and inversion symmetry breaking within the inorganic layer, thereby enabling modulation of HOIP structural and electronic properties. The cooling rate is shown to dictate whether the structural transition occurs─i.e., slow cooling induces the transition while rapid quenching inhibits it. Ultrafast calorimetry indicates a minute-scale structural relaxation time at the transition temperature, while quenching to lower temperatures allows for effectively locking in the metastable room-temperature phase, thus enabling kinetic control over switching between distinct states with different degrees of structural distortions within the inorganic layers at these temperatures. Density functional theory further highlights that the low-temperature phase of (S-2-MeBA)₂PbI₄ shows more significant spin splitting relative to the room-temperature phase. Our work opens a new pathway to use kinetic control of crystal-to-crystal transitions and thermal cycling to modulate spin splitting in HOIPs for future spintronic applications, and further points to using such "sluggish" phase transitions for switching and control over other physical phenomena, particularly those relying on structural distortions and lattice symmetry.

Doping Mn2+in hybrid Ruddlesden-Popper phase of layered double perovskite (BA)4AgBiBr8

The layered hybrid double perovskites emerged as excellent semiconductor materials owing to their environment compatibility and stability. However, these materials are weakly luminescent, and their photoluminescence (PL) properties can be modulated via doping. While Mn²⁺doping in perovskites is well known, but to the best of our knowledge the doping of Mn²⁺in layered double perovskites (LDPs) is yet to be explored. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the doping of Mn²⁺in hybrid inorganic-organic two-dimensional (2D) LDPs, (BA)₄AgBiBr₈(BA = n-butyl amine) via a simple solid-state mechanochemical route. The powder x-ray diffraction pattern, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirm the successful incorporation of Mn²⁺ions inside (BA)₄AgBiBr₈lattice. The Mn²⁺doped 2D LDP shows energy transfer from host excitons to d-electrons of Mn²⁺ions, which results in red-shifted broad Mn²⁺emission band centered at 625 nm, attributed to thespin-forbidden⁴T₁to⁶A₁internal transition. This work opens up new possibilities to dope metal ions in 2D LDPs to tune the optical as well as magnetic properties.

Two [Co(bipy)3]3+-Templated Silver Halobismuthate Hybrids: Syntheses, Structures, Photocurrent Responses, and Theoretical Studies

Employing in situ-generated metal complexes as structural decorating agents, we, for the first time, isolated two [Co(bipy)₃]³⁺-templated silver halobismuthate hybrids, namely [Co(bipy)₃]₂Ag₄Bi₂X₁₆ (X = Br (1), I (2); bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Compounds 1 and 2 belong to the isomorphic phrases and exhibit the nonperovskite structures characteristic of the discrete [Ag₄Bi₂X₁₆]^6- anions. UV-vis absorption spectra analyses showed that the optical band gaps of compounds 1 and 2 are 2.40 and 1.95 eV, respectively, implying the visible light responding semiconductor properties. Moreover, under the alternate light illumination, the title compounds exhibited "on/off" photocurrent behaviors, with high photocurrent densities comparable to many metal halide hybrids. Presented in this work also involved the Hirshfeld surface analyses and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies together with the theoretical band structures, density of states, and electron wave functions.

Centimeter-sized lead-free iodide-based hybrid double perovskite single crystals for efficient X-ray photoresponsivity

Hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (HOIPs) possess significant photoelectric characteristics for solar energy conversion, but the presence of lead causes issues for eco-friendly applications. Halide double perovskites represent a green option for application in the optoelectronic field, especially X-ray detection systems. Despite the great efforts, the exploration of large-size lead-free iodide-based hybrid double perovskite single crystals for X-ray detection has been unsuccessful. Herein, we demonstrate that a large single crystal of the 2D (two-dimensional) semiconducting perovskite (C₆H₁₆N₂)₂CuBiI₈·0.5H₂O can serve as an X-ray detection candidate. A perovskite crystal, as large as 35 × 31 × 3 mm³, was grown using a low-cost, simple cooling solution approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a centimeter-sized 2D BiCu iodide double perovskite single crystal has been used for X-ray detection. The perovskite crystal exhibited unique properties for X-ray detection, such as a significant X-ray absorption coefficient, considerable μτ product, and low trap density. Moreover, X-ray detection with a sensitivity of 5.51 μC Gy_air^-1 cm^-2 was achieved based on a single crystal. This work opens new ways to explore specially designed organic cations for stabilizing 2D HOIPs that show great potential in optoelectronics.

Lanthanide doped lead-free double perovskites as the promising next generation ultra-broadband light sources

Efficient ultra-broadband emitter is realized by using lanthanide ion doping coupled with "DPs-in-glass composite" (DiG) structure. The synergy of self-trapped exciton together with the energy transition induce this ultra-broadband emission emerge.

Hybrid Layered Double Perovskite Halides of Transition Metals

Hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP) halides comprise hexacoordinated 1+ and 3+ metals in the octahedral sites within a perovskite layer and organic amine cations between the layers. Progress on such materials has hitherto been limited to compounds containing main group 3+ ions isoelectronic with Pb^II (such as Sb^III and Bi^III). Here, we report eight HLDP halides from the A₂M^IM^IIIX₈ family, where A = para-phenylenediammonium (PPDA), 1,4-butanediammonium (1,4-BDA), or 1,3-propanediammonium (1,3-PDA); M^I = Cu or Ag; M^III = Ru or Mo; X = Cl or Br. The optical band gaps, which lie in the range 1.55 to 2.05 eV, are tunable according to the layer composition, but are largely independent of the spacer. Magnetic measurements carried out for (PPDA)₂Ag^IRu^IIICl₈ and (PPDA)₂Ag^IMo^IIICl₈ show no obvious evidence of a magnetic ordering transition. While the t_2g³ Mo^III compound displays Curie-Weiss behavior for a spin-only d³ ion, the t_2g⁵ Ru^III compound displays marked deviations from the Kotani theory.

Tuning the optical properties of 2D monolayer silver-bismuth bromide double perovskite by halide substitution

Silver-bismuth double perovskites are promising replacement materials for lead-based ones in photovoltaic (PV) devices due to the lower toxicity and enhanced stability to environmental factors. In addition, they might even be more suitable for indoor PV, due to the size of their bandgap better matching white LEDs emission. Unfortunately, their optoelectronic performance does not reach that of the lead-based counterparts, because of the indirect nature of the band gap and the high exciton binding energy. One strategy to improve the electronic properties is the dimensional reduction from the 3D to the 2D perovskite structure, which features a direct band gap, as it has been reported for 2D monolayer derivates of Cs₂AgBiBr₆obtained by substituting Cs⁺cations with bulky alkylammonium cations. However, a similar dimensional reduction also brings to a band gap opening, limiting light absorption in the visible. In this work, we report on the achievement of a bathochromic shift in the absorption features of a butylammonium-based silver-bismuth bromide monolayer double perovskite through doping with iodide and study the optical properties and stability of the resulting thin films in environmental conditions. These species might constitute the starting point to design future sustainable materials to implement as active components in indoor photovoltaic devices used to power the IoT.

Cubic Crystal Structure Formation and Optical Properties within the Ag-BII-MIV-X (BII = Sr, Pb; MIV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Family of Semiconductors

Quaternary chalcogenide semiconductors are promising materials for energy conversion and nonlinear optical applications, with properties tunable primarily by varying the elemental composition and crystal structure. Here, we first analyze the connections among several cubic crystal structure types, as well as the orthorhombic Ag₂PbGeS₄-type structure, reported for select members within the Ag-B^II-M^IV-X (B^II = Sr, Pb; M^IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compositional space. Focusing on the Ag-Pb-Si-S and Ag-Sr-Sn-S systems, we show that one structure type, with the formulas Ag₂Pb₃Si₂S₈ and Ag₂Sr₃Sn₂S₈, is favored. We have prepared powder and single-crystal samples of Ag₂Pb₃Si₂S₈ and Ag₂Sr₃Sn₂S₈, showing that each takes on the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group I4̅3d and is isostructural to the previously reported compound Ag₂Sr₃Ge₂Se₈. Through hybrid density functional theory calculations, these cubic compounds are demonstrated to be (quasi-)direct band gap semiconductors with high densities of states at the band maxima. The band-gap energies are measured by reflectance spectroscopy as 1.95(3) and 2.66(4) eV for Ag₂Pb₃Si₂S₈ and Ag₂Sr₃Sn₂S₈, respectively. We further measure the optical properties and show the electronic band structures of three other isostructural A^I-B^II-M^IV-X-type materials, i.e., Ag₂Sr₃Si₂S₈, Ag₂Sr₃Ge₂S₈, and Ag₂Sr₃Ge₂Se₈, showing that the band gaps can be predictably tuned by element substitution. Detailed visual analyses of the different structures and of their relationships with other members of the Ag-B^II-M^IV-X compositional family provide a basis for a broader understanding of the structure formation and optoelectronic properties within the quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor family.

Revealing Weak Dimensional Confinement Effects in Excitonic Silver/Bismuth Double Perovskites

Lead-free perovskites are attracting increasing interest as nontoxic materials for advanced optoelectronic applications. Here, we report on a family of silver/bismuth bromide double perovskites with lower dimensionality obtained by incorporating phenethylammonium (PEA) as an organic spacer, leading to the realization of two-dimensional double perovskites in the form of (PEA)₄AgBiBr₈ (n = 1) and the first reported (PEA)₂CsAgBiBr₇ (n = 2). In contrast to the situation prevailing in lead halide perovskites, we find a rather weak influence of electronic and dielectric confinement on the photophysics of the lead-free double perovskites, with both the 3D Cs₂AgBiBr₆ and the 2D n = 1 and n = 2 materials being dominated by strong excitonic effects. The large measured Stokes shift is explained by the inherent soft character of the double-perovskite lattices, rather than by the often-invoked band to band indirect recombination. We discuss the implications of these results for the use of double perovskites in light-emitting applications.

On the optical anisotropy in 2D metal-halide perovskites

Two-dimensional metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) are versatile solution-processed organic/inorganic quantum wells where the structural anisotropy creates profound anisotropy in their electronic and excitonic properties and associated optical constants. We here employ a wholistic framework, based on semiempirical modeling (k·p/effective mass theory calculations) informed by hybrid density functional theory (DFT) and multimodal spectroscopic ellipsometry on (C₆H₅(CH₂)₂NH₃)₂PbI₄ films and crystals, that allows us to link the observed optical properties and anisotropy precisely to the underlying physical parameters that shape the electronic structure of a layered MHP. We find substantial frequency-dependent anisotropy in the optical constants and close correspondence between experiment and theory, demonstrating a high degree of in-plane alignment of the two-dimensional planes in both spin-coated thin films and cleaved single crystals made in this study. Hybrid DFT results elucidate the degree to which organic and inorganic frontier orbitals contribute to optical transitions polarized along a particular axis. The combined experimental and theoretical approach enables us to estimate the fundamental electronic bandgap of 2.65-2.68 eV in this prototypical 2D perovskite and to determine the spin-orbit coupling (Δ_SO = 1.20 eV) and effective crystal field (δ = -1.36 eV) which break the degeneracy of the frontier conduction band states and determine the exciton fine structure. The methods and results described here afford a better understanding of the connection between structure and induced optical anisotropy in quantum-confined MHPs, an important structure-property relationship for optoelectronic applications and devices.

The construction of a two-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid double perovskite ferroelastic with a high Tc and narrow band gap

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid double perovskites have attracted extensive research interest for their fascinating physical properties, such as ferroelectricity, X-ray detection, light response and so on. In addition, ferroelastics, as an important branch of ferroic materials, exhibits wide prospects in mechanical switches, shape memory and templating electronic nanostructures. Here, we designed a 2D phase-transition double perovskite ferroelastic through a structurally progressive strategy. This evolution is core to our construction process from 0D to 1D and AgBi-based 2D. In this way, we successfully synthesized 2D lead-free ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ (DPA = 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium) with a high Curie temperature (T_c), which shows a narrower band gap than 0D (DPA)₄Bi₂Br₁₀ and 1D (DPA)₅Pb₂Br₉. Moreover, the mechanism of structural phase transition and molecular motion are fully characterized by temperature dependent solid-state NMR and single crystal XRD. (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ injects power into the discovery of new ferroelastics or the construction and dimensional adjustment in new hybrid double perovskites.

By using a lead-free AgBi-based scheme, we successfully synthesized a two-dimensional double perovskite ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ with high T_c of 375 K and a narrow band gap of 2.44 eV, where DPA is 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium.

Rigid Conjugated Diamine Templates for Stable Dion-Jacobson-Type Two-Dimensional Perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have garnered widespread interest, yet stability remains a critical issue that limits their further application. Compared to their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts, two-dimensional (2D)-HOIPs exhibit improved stability. 2D-HOIPs are also appealing because their structural and optical properties can be tuned according to the choice of organic ligand, with monovalent or divalent ligands forming Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) or Dion-Jacobson (DJ)-type 2D perovskites, respectively. Unlike RP-type 2D perovskites, DJ-type 2D perovskites do not contain a van der Waals gap between the 2D layers, leading to improved stability. However, bifunctional organic ligands currently used to develop DJ-type 2D perovskites are limited to commercially available aliphatic and single-ring aromatic ammonium cations. Large conjugated organic ligands are in demand for their semiconducting properties and their potential to improve materials stability further. In this manuscript, we report the design and synthesis of a new set of larger conjugated diamine ligands and their incorporation into DJ-type 2D perovskites. Compared with analogous RP-type 2D perovskites, DJ 2D perovskites reported here show blue-shifted, narrower emissions and significantly improved stability. By changing the structure of rings (benzene vs thiophene) and substituents, we develop structure-property relationships, finding that fluorine substitution enhances crystallinity. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate that these changes are due to strong electrostatic interactions between the organic templates and inorganic layers as well as the rigid backbone and strong π-π interaction between the organic ligands themselves. These results illustrate that targeted engineering of the diamine ligands can enhance the stability of DJ-type 2D perovskites.

Highly Efficient and Stable Dion-Jacobson Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by Extended π-Conjugation of Organic Spacer

2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have become an emerging photovoltaic material with excellent structure and environmental stability due to their lacking van der Waals gaps relative to 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites. Here, a fused-thiophene-based spacer, namely TTDMAI, is successfully developed for 2D DJ perovskite solar cells. It is found that the DJ perovskite using TTDMA spacer with extended π-conjugation length exhibits high film quality, large crystal size and preferred crystal vertical orientation induced by the large crystal nuclei in precursor solution, resulting in lower trap density, reduced exciton binding energy and oriented charge transport. As a result, the optimized 2D DJ perovskite device based on TTDMA (nominal n = 4) delivers a champion PCE up to 18.82%. Importantly, the unencapsulated device based on TTDMA can sustain average 99% of their original efficiency after being stored in N₂ for 4400 h (over 6 months). Moreover, light, thermal, environmental and operational stabilities are also significantly improved in comparison with their 3D counterparts.

Role of Polycyclic Aromatic Alkylammonium Cations in Tuning the Electronic Properties and Band Alignment of Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskite Semiconductors

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have recently drawn intense attention as potential photovoltaic materials. However, n = 1 two-dimensional (2D) HOIPs face the challenge of low conductivity between the inorganic layers, leading to unsatisfactory device performance. Interestingly, 2D HOIPs employing π-conjugated molecules as organic moieties show energy and charge transfers between organic and inorganic layers, indicating potentially efficient carrier transport for photovoltaic applications. Nevertheless, the development of 2D HOIP-based solar cells especially utilizing polycyclic aromatic alkylammonium as cations is in its infancy. Herein, we investigated the electronic structure and band alignment of a series of n = 1 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase HOIPs containing different polycyclic aromatic groups and alkyl chains, based on density functional theory calculations. We find that the polycyclic aromatic group plays an important role in controlling the functionality of 2D HOIPs by directly modifying band-edge states, and the band alignment at the organic-inorganic interface can be designed to promote either exciton trapping or dissociation for light-emitting or photovoltaic applications, respectively.

High-Curie Temperature Multilayered Hybrid Double Perovskite Photoferroelectrics Induced by Aromatic Cation Alloying

Due to the breakthrough development of layered hybrid perovskites, the multilayered hybrid double perovskites have emerged as outstanding semiconducting materials owing to their environmental friendliness and superior stability. Despite recent booming advances, the realization of above-room temperature ferroelectricity in this fascinating family remains a huge challenge. Herein, when the molecular design strategy of aromatic cation alloying is applied, an above-room temperature "green" bilayered hybrid double perovskite photoferroelectric, (C₆H₅CH₂NH₃)₂CsAgBiBr₇ (BCAB), is successfully developed with a notable saturation polarization of 10.5 μC·cm^-2 and high-Curie temperature (T_c ∼ 483 K). Strikingly, such a T_c achieves a new record in multilayered hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics, which extends the ferroelectric working temperature to a high level. Further computational investigation reveals that the high-T_c originated from the high phase-transition energy barrier switched by the rotation of the aromatic cation in the confined environment of the inorganic layers. In addition, benefiting from the attractive polarization and remarkable photoelectric properties, a bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) with a prominent zero-bias photocurrent (2.5 μA·cm^-2) is achieved. As far as we know, such a high-T_c multilayered hybrid double perovskite ferroelectric is unprecedented, which sheds light on the rational design of an environmental photoferroelectric for high performance photoelectric devices.

Structure and Optical Properties of Hybrid-Layered-Double Perovskites (C8H20N2)2AgMBr8 (M = In, Sb, and Bi)

The Pb-free hybrid-layered-double perovskites (HLDPs) have been proposed as green and stable semiconducting materials for optoelectronic devices, but the synthesized members are still limited. Here, we report the synthesis of three new HLDPs, (C₈H₂₀N₂)₂AgMBr₈ (M = In, Sb, and Bi), by a solution method using 1,4-bis(ammoniomethyl)cyclohexane (C₈H₂₀N₂²⁺) as the organic spacing cation. All three of these HLDPs show ⟨100⟩-oriented layered structures with Ag and In/Sb/Bi order arranged in corner-sharing octahedral layers. The first-principle calculations indicate the indirect-gap nature of (C₈H₂₀N₂)₂AgInBr₈ and (C₈H₂₀N₂)₂AgSbBr₈, while their Bi counterpart shows a direct band gap after considering spin-orbit coupling. The band gaps obtained by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy are 3.11, 2.60, and 2.70 eV for M = In, Sb, and Bi, respectively. (C₈H₂₀N₂)₂AgInBr₈ shows a broadband red emission centered at 690 nm, and it is mainly attributed to the self-trapped-excitons mechanism. Our results not only provide a series of new "Pb-free" HLDPs with chemical diversity but also help us to further understand the structure-property relationships of HLDP materials.

Structural descriptor for enhanced spin-splitting in 2D hybrid perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid metal halide perovskites have emerged as outstanding optoelectronic materials and are potential hosts of Rashba/Dresselhaus spin-splitting for spin-selective transport and spin-orbitronics. However, a quantitative microscopic understanding of what controls the spin-splitting magnitude is generally lacking. Through crystallographic and first-principles studies on a broad array of chiral and achiral 2D perovskites, we demonstrate that a specific bond angle disparity connected with asymmetric tilting distortions of the metal halide octahedra breaks local inversion symmetry and strongly correlates with computed spin-splitting. This distortion metric can serve as a crystallographic descriptor for rapid discovery of potential candidate materials with strong spin-splitting. Our work establishes that, rather than the global space group, local inorganic layer distortions induced via appropriate organic cations provide a key design objective to achieve strong spin-splitting in perovskites. New chiral perovskites reported here couple a sizeable spin-splitting with chiral degrees of freedom and offer a unique paradigm of potential interest for spintronics.

Self-Assembled Organic Cations-Assisted Band-Edge Tailoring in Bismuth-Based Perovskites for Enhanced Visible Light Absorption and Photoconductivity

Bismuth-based zero-dimensional perovskites garner high research interest because of their advantages, such as excellent moisture stability and lower toxicity in comparison to lead-based congeners. However, the wide optical bandgap (>2 eV) and poor photoconductivity of these materials are the bottlenecks for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the structural features and optoelectronic properties of two novel and stable zero-dimensional bismuth perovskites: (biphenyl bis(methylammonium))1.5BiI6·2H2O (BPBI) and (naphthalene diimide bis(ethylammonium))1.5BiI6·2H2O (NDBI). NDBI features a remarkably narrower bandgap (1.82 eV) than BPBI (2.06 eV) because of the significant orbital contribution of self-assembled naphthalene diimide cations at the band edges of NDBI. Further, the FP-TRMC analysis revealed that the photoconductivity of NDBI is about 3.7-fold greater than that of BPBI. DFT calculations showed that the enhanced photoconductivity in NDBI arises from its type-IIa band alignment, whereas type-Ib alignment was seen in BPBI.
