Open-Shell and Antiaromatic Character Induced by the Highly Symmetric Geometry of the Planar Heptalene Structure: Synthesis and Characterization of a Nonalternant Isomer of Bisanthene

Colorless Near-Infrared Absorbing Dyes Based on B-N Fused Donor-Acceptor-Donor π-Conjugated Molecules for Organic Phototransistors

The introduction of a colorless function to organic electronic devices allows responses to light in the near-infrared (NIR) region and is expected to broaden the applications of these devices. However, the development of a colorless NIR dye remains a challenge due to the lack of a rational molecular design for controlling electronic transitions. In this study, to suppress the π-π* transitions in the visible region, polycyclic donor-acceptor-donor π-conjugated molecules with boron bridges (Py-FNTz-B and IP-FNTz-B) are designed and synthesized, which contain pyrrole or indenopyrrole as donor units with fluorinated naphthobisthiadiazole (FNTz) as an acceptor unit. The pyrrole end-capped Py-FNTz-B shows an absorption band in the NIR region without distinct visible-light absorption, which has led to the establishment of colorless characteristics. The indenopyrrole end-capped IP-FNTz-B shows a narrow optical energy gap of 0.87 eV in films. Time-resolved microwave conductance and field-effect transistors demonstrate the semiconducting characteristics of these molecules, and Py-FNTz-B-based devices function as NIR phototransistors. Theoretical analyses indicate that the combination of a polyene-like electronic structure with orbital symmetry is important to obtain NIR wavelength-selective absorption. This study suggests that a molecular design based on electronic structures can be effective in the development of colorless NIR-absorbing dyes for organic electronics.

Bistability between π-diradical open-shell and closed-shell states in indeno[1,2-a]fluorene

Indenofluorenes are non-benzenoid conjugated hydrocarbons that have received great interest owing to their unusual electronic structure and potential applications in nonlinear optics and photovoltaics. Here we report the generation of unsubstituted indeno[1,2-a]fluorene on various surfaces by the cleavage of two C-H bonds in 7,12-dihydroindeno[1,2-a]fluorene through voltage pulses applied by the tip of a combined scanning tunnelling microscope and atomic force microscope. On bilayer NaCl on Au(111), indeno[1,2-a]fluorene is in the neutral charge state, but it exhibits charge bistability between neutral and anionic states on the lower-workfunction surfaces of bilayer NaCl on Ag(111) and Cu(111). In the neutral state, indeno[1,2-a]fluorene exhibits one of two ground states: an open-shell π-diradical state, predicted to be a triplet by density functional and multireference many-body perturbation theory calculations, or a closed-shell state with a para-quinodimethane moiety in the as-indacene core. We observe switching between open- and closed-shell states of a single molecule by changing its adsorption site on NaCl.

Axially Chiral Nonbenzenoid Nanographene with Second Harmonic Generation Property

Chiral nanographenes (NGs) have garnered significant interest as optoelectronic materials in recent years. While helically chiral NGs have been extensively studied, axially chiral NGs have only witnessed limited examples, with no prior reports of axially chiral nonbenzenoid NGs. Herein we report an axially chiral nonbenzenoid nanographene featuring six pentagons and four heptagons. This compound, denoted as 2, was efficiently synthesized via an efficient Pd-catalyzed aryl silane homocoupling reaction. The presence of two bulky 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl groups around the axis connecting the two nonbenzenoid PAH (AHR) segments endows 2 with atropisomeric chirality and high racemization energy barrier, effectively preventing racemization of both R- and S-enantiomers at room temperature. Optically pure R-2 and S-2 were obtained by chiral HPLC separation, and they exhibit circular dichroism (CD) activity at wavelengths up to 660 nm, one of the longest wavelengths with CD responses reported for the chiral NGs. Interestingly, racemic 2 forms a homoconfiguration π-dimer in the crystal lattice, belonging to the I222 chiral space group. Consequently, this unique structure renders crystals of 2 with a second harmonic generation (SHG) response, distinguishing it from all the reported axially chiral benzenoid NGs. Moreover, R-2 and S-2 also exhibit SHG-CD properties.

Efficient Synthesis and Structural Analysis of Chiral 4,4'-Biazulene

4,4'-Biazulene is a potentially attractive key component of an axially chiral biaryl compound, however, its structure and properties have not been clarified owing to the lack of its efficient synthesis. We report a breakthrough in the reliable synthesis of 4,4'-biazulene, which is achieved by the access to azulen-4-ylboronic acid pinacol ester and 4-iodoazulene as novel key synthetic intermediates for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of 4,4'-biazulene confirmed its axial chirality. The enantiomers of 4,4'-biazulene were successfully resolved by HPLC on the chiral stationary phase column. The kinetic experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the racemization energy barrier of 4,4'-biazulene is comparable to that of 1,1'-binaphthyl.

Bespoke Tailoring of Graphenoid Sheets: A Rippled Molecular Carbon Comprising Cyclically Fused Nonbenzenoid Rings

The incorporation of nonbenzenoid rings into the hexagonal networks of graphenoid nanostructures is of immense importance for electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties, but the underlying mechanisms of nonbenzenoid ring fusion are rather unexplored. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a rippled C84 molecular carbon, which contains 10 nonbenzenoid rings (five-, seven-, and eight-membered rings) that are contiguously fused to give a cyclic geometry. The fused nonbenzenoid rings impart high solubility, configurational stability, multiple reversible redox behaviors, unique aromaticity, and a narrow band gap to the system. Moreover, this carbon nanostructure allows for further functionalization via electrophilic substitution and metalation reactions, enabling access to finely tuned derivatives. Interestingly, both the bowl-shaped and planar conformations of the core in molecular carbon are observed in the solid state. Additionally, this molecular carbon displays ambipolar transport characteristics.

Tetrafluorenofulvalene as a sterically frustrated open-shell alkene

Electronic and steric effects are known to greatly influence the structure, characteristics and reactivity of organic compounds. A typical π bond is weakened by oxidation (corresponding to the removal of electrons from bonding orbitals), by reduction (through addition of electrons to antibonding orbitals) and by unpairing of the bonding electrons, such as in the triplet state. Here we describe tetrafluorenofulvalene (TFF), a twisted, open-shell alkene for which these general rules do not hold. Through the synthesis, experimental characterization and computational analysis of its charged species spanning seven redox states, the central alkene bond in TFF is shown to become substantially stronger in the tri- and tetraanion, generated by chemical reduction. Furthermore, although its triplet state contains a weaker alkene bond than the singlet, in the quintet state its bond order increases substantially, yielding a flatter structure. This behaviour originates from the doubly bifurcated topology of the underlying spin system and can be rationalized by the balancing effects of benzenoid aromaticity and spin pairing.

Synthesis and Properties of Twisted and Helical Azulene Oligomers and Azulene-Based Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

The construction of 1,2-position-connected azulene oligomers was achieved. In the crystal packing structure of the terazulene, two molecules of (Ra )- and (Sa )-configurations formed a pair. Variable temperature NMR measurements and theoretical calculations of the quaterazulene suggest that the helical and syn-type structure with terminal azulene overlap is more stable. Two kinds of fused terazulenes (1,2''-closed and 1,8''-closed) were also synthesized by intramolecular Pd-catalyzed C-H/C-Br arylation of the terazulene moieties. X-ray structure analysis of 1,2''-closed terazulene revealed a planar structure, while an analysis of 1,8''-closed terazulene performed on a C60 co-crystal revealed a curved structure forming a 1 : 1 complex covering the co-crystal. Nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations carried out for the central seven-membered ring of 1,8''-closed terazulene showed a positive value, suggesting anti-aromatic properties.

Electronic properties and carrier mobilities of nanocarbons formed by non-benzoidal building blocks

Exotic 1D and 2D carbon nanostructures have been grown in the laboratory in the last few years by means of surface-assisted chemical routes. In these processes, the strategical choice of a molecular precursor plays a dominant role in the determination of the synthesized nanocarbon. Further variations of these techniques are able to produce non-benzoidal carbon quantum-dots (QDs). Considering this experimental scenario as motivation, we propose a series of nanoribbon systems based on concatenating recently synthesized carbon QDs containing pentagonal, hexagonal, and heptagonal rings. We use density functional theory (DFT) simulations to reveal their properties can range from metallic to semiconducting depending on the concatenation hierarchy used to form the nanoribbons. This DFT implementation is based on a LCAO approach to describe valence wavefunctions and most of the simulations employ the PBE-GGA functional. Since this functional is known to underestimate band gaps, we also use the B3LYP functional in a plane-wave DFT approach for a selected case for comparison purposes. These systems show a different gap versus width relationship compared to conventional graphene nanoribbons setups and a particular set of carrier mobility values. We further discuss the interplay between the QD's frontier states and the electronic properties of the nanoribbons in light of their structural details.

Diazulenorubicene as a Non-benzenoid Isomer of peri-Tetracene with Two Sets of 5/7/5 Membered Rings Showing Good Semiconducting Properties

Non-benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have received a lot of attention because of their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, but their synthesis remains challenging. Herein, we report a non-benzenoid isomer of peri-tetracene, diazulenorubicene (DAR), with two sets of 5/7/5 membered rings synthesized by a (3+2) annulation reaction. Compared with the precursor containing only 5/7 membered rings, the newly formed five membered rings switch the aromaticity of the original heptagon/pentagon from antiaromatic/aromatic to non-aromatic/antiaromatic respectively, modify the intermolecular packing modes, and lower the LUMO levels. Notably, compound 2 b (DAR-TMS) shows p-type semiconducting properties with a hole mobility up to 1.27 cm2  V-1  s-1 . Moreover, further extension to larger non-benzenoid PAHs with 19 rings was achieved through on-surface chemistry from the DAR derivative with one alkynyl group.

Structural Expansion of Cyclohepta[def]fluorene towards Azulene-Embedded Non-Benzenoid Nanographenes

Non-benzenoid non-alternant nanographenes (NGs) have attracted increasing attention on account of their distinct electronic and structural features in comparison to their isomeric benzenoid counterparts. In this work, we present a series of unprecedented azulene-embedded NGs on Au(111) during the attempted synthesis of cyclohepta[def]fluorene-based high-spin non-Kekulé structure. Comprehensive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) evidence the structures and conformations of these unexpected products. The dynamics of the precursor bearing 9-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)anthracene and dihydro-dibenzo-cyclohepta[def]fluorene units and its reaction products on the surface are analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our study sheds light on the fundamental understanding of precursor design for the fabrication of π-extended non-benzenoid NGs on a metal surface.

Unravelling the Superiority of Nonbenzenoid Acepleiadylene as a Building Block for Organic Semiconducting Materials

Acepleiadylene (APD), a nonbenzenoid isomer of pyrene, exhibits a unique charge-separated character with a large molecular dipole and a small optical gap. However, APD has never been explored in optoelectronic materials to take advantage of these appealing properties. Here, we employ APD as a building block in organic semiconducting materials for the first time, and unravel the superiority of nonbenzenoid APD in electronic applications. We have synthesized an APD derivative (APD-IID) with APD as the terminal donor moieties and isoindigo (IID) as the acceptor core. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that APD-IID has an obvious charge-separated structure and enhanced intermolecular interactions as compared with its pyrene-based isomers. As a result, APD-IID displays significantly higher hole mobilities than those of the pyrene-based counterparts. These results imply the advantages of employing APD in semiconducting materials and great potential of nonbenzenoid polycyclic arenes for optoelectronic applications.

Extension of Non-alternant Nanographenes Containing Nitrogen-Doped Stone-Thrower-Wales Defects

Non-alternant topologies have attracted considerable attention due to their unique physiochemical characteristics in recent years. Here, three novel topological nanographenes molecular models of nitrogen-doped Stone-Thrower-Wales (S-T-W) defects were achieved through intramolecular direct arylation. Their chemical structures were unambiguously elucidated by single-crystal analysis. Among them, threefold intramolecular direct arylation compound (C42 H21 N) is the largest nanographene bearing a N-doped non-alternant topology to date, in which the non-benzenoid rings account for 83 % of the total molecular skeleton. The absorption maxima of this compound was located in the near-infrared region with a long tail up to 900 nm, which was much longer than those reported for similarly sized N-doped nanographene with six-membered rings (C40 H15 N). In addition, the electronic energy gaps of these series compounds clearly decreased with the introduction of non-alternant topologies (from 2.27 eV to 1.50 eV). It is noteworthy that C42 H21 N possesses such a low energy gap (Eg opt =1.40 eV; Eg cv =1.50 eV), yet is highly stable under ambient conditions. Our work reported herein demonstrates that the non-alternant topology could significantly influence the electronic configurations of nanocarbons, where the introduction of a non-alternanting topology may be an effective way to narrow the energy gap without extending the molecular π-conjugation.

One-Pot Synthesis of Helical Azaheptalene and Chiroptical Switching of an Isolable Radical Cation

A nitrogen-centered heptalene, azaheptalene, was designed as a representative of a new class of redox-responsive molecules with a large steric strain that originates from the adjacent seven-membered rings. The pentabenzo derivative of azaheptalene was efficiently synthesized by a palladium-catalyzed one-pot reaction of commercially available reagents. Bromination led to mono- and dibrominated derivatives, the latter of which is interconvertible with isolable radical cation species exhibiting near-infrared absorption. Since the azaheptalene skeleton shows configurationally stable helicity with a large torsion angle, enantiomers could be successfully separated. Thus, optically pure azaheptalenes with P- or M-helicity showed strong chiroptical properties (|gabs |≥0.01), which could be changed by an electric potential.

Two-Step Synthesis of B2 N2 -Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Containing Pentagonal and Heptagonal Rings with Long-Lived Delayed Fluorescence

Pentagon-heptagon embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have aroused increasing attention in recent years due to their unique physicochemical properties. Here, for the first time, this report demonstrates a facile method for the synthesis of a novel B2 N2 -doped PAH (BN-2) containing two pairs of pentagonal and heptagonal rings in only two steps. In the solid state of BN-2, two different conformations, including saddle-shaped and up-down geometries, are observed. Through a combined spectroscopic and calculation study, the excited-state dynamics of BN-2 is well-investigated in this current work. The resultant pentagon-heptagon embedded B2 N2 -doped BN-2 displays both prompt fluorescence and long-lived delayed fluorescence components at room temperature, with the triplet excited-state lifetime in the microsecond time region (τ = 19 µs). The triplet-triplet annihilation is assigned as the mechanism for the observed long-lived delayed fluorescence. Computational analyses attributed this observation to the small energy separation between the singlet and triplet excited states, facilitating the intersystem crossing (ISC) process which is further validated by the ultrafast spectroscopic measurements.

Electronic Structure Modulation of Nanographenes for Second Order Nonlinear Optical Molecular Materials

Nanographenes (NGs) have drawn extensive attention as promising candidates for next-generation optoelectronic and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, owing to its unique optoelectronic properties and high thermal stability. However, the weak polarity or even non-polarity of NGs (resulting in weak even order NLO properties) and the high chemical reactivity of zigzag edged NGs hinder their further applications in nonlinear optics, thus stabilization (lowering the chemical reactivity) and polarizing the charge distribution in NGs are necessary for such applications of NGs. The fusion of heptagon and pentagon endows the azulene with the character of donor-acceptor, and the B=N unit is isoelectronic to C=C unit. The introduction of polar azulene and BN are idea to polarize and stabilize the electronic structure of NGs for NLO applications. In the present review, a survey on the functionalization and applications of NGs in nonlinear optics is conducted. The engineering of the electronic structure of NGs by topological defects, doping and edge modulation is summarized. Finally, a summary of challenges and perspectives for carbon-based NLO nanomaterials is presented.

Rational design of anti-Kasha photoemission from a biazulene core embedded in an antiaromatic/aromatic hybrid

The violation of the Kasha photoemission rule in organic molecules has intrigued chemists since their discovery, being always of relevance given its connection with unique electronic properties of molecules. However, an understanding of the molecular structure-anti-Kasha property relationship in organic materials has not been well-established, possibly because of the few existing cases available, limiting their prospective exploration and ad hoc design. Here we introduce a novel strategy to design organic emitters from high excited states combining intramolecular J-coupling of anti-Kasha chromophores with the hindering of vibrationally-induced non-radiative decay channels by enforcing molecular rigidity. We apply our approach to the integration of two antiparallel azulene units bridged with one heptalene all inserted into a polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbon (PCH). With the help of quantum chemistry calculations, we identify a suitable PCH embedding structure and predict its anti-Kasha emission from the third high energy excited singlet state. Finally, steady fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy studies corroborate the photophysical properties in a recently synthesized chemical derivative with this pre-designed structure.

Construction of a 2,2'-biazulene framework via Brønsted acid-promoted annulation of 2,3-di(1-azulenyl)benzofurans

Dibenzofurans featuring a 2,2'-biazulene framework were prepared in good yields by Brønsted acid-promoted annulation of 2,3-di(1-azulenyl)benzofurans in 100% H₃PO₄. NMR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to investigate the structural and optical properties of the products prepared. Remarkably, the annulated products exhibited fluorescence, with the longest wavelength of azulene derivatives reported to date, which extended into the near-infrared region under acidic conditions.

Synthesis of a Dicyclohepta[a,g]heptalene-Containing Polycyclic Conjugated Hydrocarbon and the Impact of Non-Alternant Topologies

Incorporating non-hexagonal rings into polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) can significantly affect their electronic and optoelectronic properties and chemical reactivities. Here, we report the first bottom-up synthesis of a dicyclohepta[a,g]heptalene-embedded PCH (1) with four continuous heptagons, which are arranged in a "Z" shape. Compared with its structural isomer bischrysene 1 R with only hexagonal rings, compound 1 presents a distinct antiaromatic character, especially the inner heptalene core, which possesses clear antiaromatic nature. In addition, PCH 1 exhibits a narrower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap than its benzenoid contrast 1 R, as verified by experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Our work reported herein not only provides a new way to synthesize novel PCHs with non-alternant topologies but also offers the possibility to tune their electronic and optical properties.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Hydrocarbons Designed by π-Extension of Indeno[1,2,3,4-pgra]perylene at the 1,2,12-Positions

The relationship between the overall electronic structure of π-conjugated molecules and the arrangement of their constituent elements is of fundamental importance. Establishing rational design guidelines for conjugated hydrocarbons with narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps is useful to develop near-infrared (NIR) responsive dyes and redox-active materials. This study describes the synthesis and properties of three conjugated hydrocarbons, i. e., an indenonaphthoperylene, an indenoterrylene, and a diindenoterrylene. These molecules exhibit NIR absorption despite the absence of significant antiaromaticity and diradical character. Notably, the indenonaphthoperylene exhibits red-to-NIR emission in the 620-850 nm region. The indenoterrylene and the diindenoterrylene exhibit NIR absorption tailing to 870 and 940 nm, respectively. Moreover, the effect of the π-extension of indenoperylene is disclosed in order to propose guidelines for achieving a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap with negligible antiaromaticity and diradical character.

Divergent Synthesis of Alternant Bisanthenequinone and Nonalternant Heptalenodifluorenedione Ring Systems via a Concentration-Dependent Rearrangement

The synthesis of a diol containing a nonalternant aromatic core was investigated to access a nonalternant isomer of bisanthene with functional groups suitable for two-dimensional polymerization. An alternant diol and its nonalternant isomer were prepared in a short synthetic route from the same bifluorenylidene starting material. The bifluorenylidene reactant undergoes a Stone-Wales rearrangement in neat triflic acid, which unexpectedly provided both an alternant and nonalternant dione. The rearrangement was characterized by spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction of Grignard addition products of both isomers. The relative yield of the rearranged, alternant product increased along with the initial concentration of its polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) precursor, implicating a bimolecular rearrangement mechanism and enabling the divergent synthesis of both the nonalternant and alternant products. These findings offer convenient access to functional derivatives of two PAH classes of interest for their optoelectronic properties and serve as yet another warning about the importance of characterizing these materials with care, especially when insoluble products must be carried forward in a multistep synthetic route.

π-Extended Pleiadienes by [5+2] Annulation of 1-Boraphenalenes and ortho-Dihaloarenes

Palladium-catalyzed [5+2] annulation of 1-boraphenalenes with ortho-dihaloarenes afforded negatively curved π-extended pleiadienes. Two benzo[1,2-i:4,5-i']dipleiadienes (BDPs) featuring a seven-six-seven-membered ring arrangement were synthesized and investigated. Their crystal structure revealed a unique packing arrangement and theoretical calculations were employed to shed light onto the dynamic behavior of the BDP moiety and its aromaticity. Further, a naphthalene-fused pleiadiene was stitched together by oxidative cyclodehydrogenation to yield an additional five-membered ring. This formal azulene moiety led to distinct changes in optical and redox properties and increased perturbation of the aromatic system.

Polycyclic Hydrocarbons from [4n]Annulenes: Correlation versus Hybridization Forces in the Formation of Diradicaloids

The conceptual connections between [4n] Hückel antiaromaticity, disjoint orbitals, correlation energy, pro-aromaticity and diradical character for a variety of extended π-conjugated systems, including some salient recent examples of nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic radicals, are provided based on their [4n]annulene peripheries. The realization of such structure-property relationships has led to a beneficial pedagogic exercise establishing design guidelines for diradicaloids. The antiaromatic fingerprint of the [4n]annulene peripheries upon orbital interactions due to internal covalent connectors gives insights into the diradicaloid property of a diversity of π-conjugated molecules that have fascinated chemists recently.

Synthesis of Defective Nanographenes Containing Joined Pentagons and Heptagons

Defective nanographenes containing joined pentagons and heptagons exhibit striking physicochemical properties from both experimental and theoretical perspectives compared with their pure hexagonal counterparts. Thus, the synthesis and characterization of these unique polyarenes with well-defined defective topologies have attracted increasing attention. Despite extensive research on nonalternant molecules since the last century, most studies focused on the corresponding mutagenic and carcinogenic activities. Recently, researchers have realized that the defective domain induces geometric bending and causes electronic perturbation, thus leading to significant alteration of the photophysical properties. This review discusses the synthesis and characterization of small nonalternant polycyclic hydrocarbons in the early stage and recent developments in embedding pentagon-heptagon (5-7) pairs into large carbon skeletons through in-solution chemistry.

Benzo-Extended Cyclohepta[def]fluorene Derivatives with Very Low-Lying Triplet States

Open-shell non-alternant polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) are attracting increasing attention due to their promising applications in organic spintronics and quantum computing. Herein we report the synthesis of three cyclohepta[def]fluorene-based diradicaloids (1-3), by fusion of benzo rings on its periphery for the thermodynamic stabilization, as evidenced by multiple characterization techniques. Remarkably, all of them display a very narrow optical energy gap (E_g ^opt =0.52-0.69 eV) and persistent stability under ambient conditions (t_1/2 =11.7-33.3 h). More importantly, this new type of diradicaloids possess a low-lying triplet state with an extremely small singlet-triplet energy gap, as low as 0.002 kcal mol^-1 , with a clear dependence on the molecular size. This family of compounds thus offers a new route to create non-alternant open-shell PHs with high-spin ground states, and opens up novel possibilities and insights into understanding the structure-property relationships.

Planar Tetraindolodipleiadiene via Zirconium-Promoted Intramolecular Indolyl C4-H Homocoupling

A novel N-rimmed PAH molecule containing a dipleiadiene core (TIDP) was designed and synthesized from indole, wherein a ZrCl₄-promoted intramolecular C4-H homocoupling reaction of the indole moieties was the key approach. TIDP exhibited a nearly full planar structure and antiaromaticity of the two embedded heptagonal rings. The extremely stable radical cation TIDP^•+·PF₆^- was isolated quantitatively by oxidation with AgPF₆.

Nonbenzenoid High-Spin Polycyclic Hydrocarbons Generated by Atom Manipulation

We report the on-surface synthesis of a nonbenzenoid triradical through dehydrogenation of truxene (C₂₇H₁₈) on coinage metal and insulator surfaces. Voltage pulses applied via the tip of a combined scanning tunneling microscope/atomic force microscope were used to cleave individual C-H bonds in truxene. The resultant final product truxene-5,10,15-triyl (1) was characterized at the single-molecule scale using a combination of atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our analyses show that 1 retains its open-shell quartet ground state, predicted by density functional theory, on a two monolayer-thick NaCl layer on a Cu(111) surface. We image the frontier orbital densities of 1 and confirm that they correspond to spin-split singly occupied molecular orbitals. Through our synthetic strategy, we also isolate two reactive intermediates toward the synthesis of 1, derivatives of fluorenyl radical and indeno[1,2-a]fluorene, with predicted open-shell doublet and triplet ground states, respectively. Our results should have bearings on the synthesis of nonbenzenoid high-spin polycyclic frameworks with magnetism beyond Lieb's theorem.

Bis-periazulene (Cyclohepta[def]fluorene) as a Nonalternant Isomer of Pyrene: Synthesis and Characterization of Its Triaryl Derivatives

Bis-periazulene (cyclohepta[def]fluorene), which is an unknown pyrene isomer, was synthesized as kinetically protected forms. Its triaryl derivatives 1c-e exhibited the superimposed electronic structures of peripheral, polarized, and open-shell π-conjugated systems. In contrast to previous theoretical predictions, bis-periazulene derivatives were in the singlet ground state. Changing an aryl group controlled the energy gap between the lowest singlet-triplet states.

Indeno[1,2,3,4-pqra]Perylene: A Medium-Sized Aromatic Hydrocarbon Exhibiting Full-Range Visible-Light Absorption

We report the synthesis and properties of indeno[1,2,3,4-pqra]perylene, which was prepared by the fusion of one anthracene unit with one naphthalene unit via three carbon-carbon bonds. The synthetic route through two-fold C-H arylation enabled not only the synthesis of unsubstituted indenoperylene, but also rapid access to its arylated derivatives on the gram scale. Indenoperylene is a medium-sized aromatic hydrocarbon with the composition C₂₄ H₁₂ that is isomeric to coronene. Nevertheless, its absorption covers the entire visible region owing to its small HOMO-LUMO gap. Furthermore, indenoperylene exhibits high stability despite the absence of peripheral substituents. We propose that the unique electronic structure of indenoperylene originates from the coexistence of an electron-withdrawing subunit (benzoaceanthrylene) and an electron-donating subunit (perylene). The electronic properties of indenoperylene were modulated via post-functionalization through regioselective bromination. The current research demonstrates that indenoperylene is a promising candidate as a main skeleton for near-infrared-responsive and redox-active materials.

Synthesis and Properties of Aza-Ovalene with Six Zigzag Edges

Ovalene's nitrogenated derivative with all zigzag edges and nitrogen atom doping at the periphery has been developed via one-step nitrogenation of formylbisanthene. Because of nitrogen incorporation, these molecules show greatly decreased highest occupied molecular orbital levels, enhanced intermolecular interactions, and a reversible acid response. Aza-ovalene also exhibits a diatropic ring current along the periphery. This work provides rare examples of all-zigzag-edged N-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Construction of Heptagon-Containing Molecular Nanocarbons

Molecular nanocarbons containing heptagonal rings have attracted increasing interest due to their dynamic behavior, electronic properties, aromaticity, and solid-state packing. Heptagon incorporation can not only induce negative curvature within nanocarbon scaffolds, but also confer significantly altered properties through interaction with adjacent non-hexagonal rings. Despite the disclosure of several beautiful examples in recent years, synthetic strategies toward heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons remain relatively limited due to the intrinsic challenges of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks. In this Review, recent advances in solution-mediated and surface-assisted synthesis of heptagon-containing molecular nanocarbons, as well as the intriguing properties of these frameworks, will be discussed.

On-Surface Strain-Driven Synthesis of Nonalternant Non-Benzenoid Aromatic Compounds Containing Four- to Eight-Membered Rings

The synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing various non-benzenoid rings remains a big challenge facing contemporary organic chemistry despite a considerable effort made over the last decades. Herein, we present a novel route, employing on-surface chemistry, to synthesize nonalternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing up to four distinct kinds of non-benzenoid rings. We show that the surface-induced mechanical constraints imposed on strained helical reactants play a decisive role leading to the formation of products, energetically unfavorable in solution, with a peculiar ring current stabilizing the aromatic character of the π-conjugated system. Determination of the chemical and electronic structures of the most frequent product reveals its closed-shell character and low band gap. The present study renders a new route for the synthesis of novel nonalternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or other hydrocarbons driven by internal stress imposed by the surface not available by traditional approaches of organic chemistry in solution.

Multi-Redox Active Carbons and Hydrocarbons: Control of their Redox Properties and Potential Applications

Precise control over redox properties is essential for high-performance organic electronic devices such as organic batteries, electrochromic devices, and information storage devices. In this context, multi-redox active carbons and hydrocarbons, represented as C_x H_y molecules (x≥1, y≥0), are highly sought after, because they can switch between multiple redox states. Herein, we outline the redox properties of C_x H_y molecules as solutes and adsorbed species. Furthermore, the limitations of evaluating their redox properties and the possible solutions are summarized. Additionally, the theoretical capacity (mAh/g) and gravimetric energy density (Wh/kg) of secondary batteries were estimated based on the redox properties of 185 C_x H_y molecules, which have primarily been reported in the last decade. Among them, seven C_x H_y molecules were found to have the potential to surpass the energy density of LiNi_0.6 Mn_0.2 Co_0.2 O₂ /graphite batteries. The use of C_x H_y molecules in multielectrochromic devices and multi-bit memory is also explained. We believe that this review will encourage further utilization of C_x H_y molecules thereby promoting its applications in organic electronic devices.

Characterization of Benzo[a]naphtho[2,3-f]pentalene: Interrelation between Open-shell and Antiaromatic Characters Governed by Mode of the Quinoidal Subunit and Molecular Symmetry

The singlet open-shell character and antiaromaticity are intriguing features in π-conjugated carbocycles. These two exhibit similar chemical and physical properties. However, they rarely coexist in the same molecule. Understanding the interrelation between the open-shell and antiaromatic characteristics in the same molecule is crucial to control the electronic properties. Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of a new member of diareno[a,f]pentalene, benzo[a]naphtho[2,3-f]pentalene 6. Unlike its isomer 5 with a closed-shell ground state, 6 exhibits an appreciable open-shell character and a moderate antiaromatic feature. The behaviors of the open-shell index (y₀ ) against the difference of the proton chemical signal (Δδ(H¹ )) between pentalenide dianions/neutral pentalenes for our reported pentalenes 1, 4, 5, and 6 give a thought-provoking conclusion about the interrelation between open-shell and antiaromatic characteristics in this series. The mode of the incorporated quinoidal moiety and the formal molecular symmetry are critical to balance these two characteristics.

Defective Nanographenes Containing Seven-Five-Seven (7-5-7)-Membered Rings

Defects have been observed in graphene and are expected to play a key role in its optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. However, because most of the studies focused on the structural characterization, the implications of topological defects on the physicochemical properties of graphene remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate a bottom-up synthesis of three novel nanographenes (1-3) with well-defined defects in which seven-five-seven (7-5-7)-membered rings were introduced to their sp² carbon frameworks. From the X-ray crystallographic analysis, compound 1 adopts a nearly planar structure. Compound 2, with an additional five-membered ring compared to 1, possesses a slightly saddle-shaped geometry. Compound 3, which can be regarded as the "head-to-head" fusion of 1 with two bonds, features two saddles connected together. The resultant defective nanographenes 1-3 were well-investigated by UV-vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved absorption spectra and further corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Detailed experimental and theoretical investigations elucidate that these three nanographenes 1-3 exhibit an anti-aromatic character in their ground states and display a high stability under ambient conditions, which contrast with the reported unstable biradicaloid nanographenes that contain heptagons. Our work reported herein offers insights into the understanding of structure-related properties and enables the control of the electronic structures of expanded nanographenes with atomically precise defects.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a photophysical downconversion pathway, in which a singlet excitation transforms into two triplet excited states. As such, it constitutes an exciton multiplication generation process, which is currently at the focal point for future integration into solar energy conversion devices. Beyond this, various other exciting applications were proposed, including quantum cryptography or organic light emitting diodes. Also, the mechanistic understanding evolved rapidly during the last year. Unfortunately, the number of suitable SF-chromophores is still limited. This is per se problematic, considering the wide range of envisaged applicability. With that in mind, we emphasize uncommon SF-scaffolds and outline requirements as well as strategies to expand the chromophore pool of SF-materials.

Revealing the biradicaloid nature inherited in the derivatives of thieno[3,4-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole: a computational study

Computational studies were performed on non-classical thieno[3,4-c][1,2,5] thiadiazole and its pi donor derivatives (TT dyes) so as to delineate the factors responsible for their near-infrared (NIR) absorption. For all dyes except the unsubstituted bare dye, adiabatic singlet-triplet energy gaps (estimated through the ΔSCF procedure using the B3LYP and M062X DFT methods and SFTDDFT with the 5050 functional) were less than 1eV. Percentage calculations of the biradicaloid character suggested a moderate biradicaloid nature in all derivatives. There was a resemblance between the frontier molecular orbital (MO) picture of the TT bicyclic ring and the degenerate non-bonding molecular orbitals of Trimethyleneethane (TME, a known biradical). Inter-fragment charge transfer analysis revealed not only a considerable donation of charge to the central ring (Acceptor, TT part) but also substantial charge redistribution within the ring itself. From these results, it was inferred that NIR absorption, in these dyes, was due to: (1) a reduced HOMO-LUMO gap (HLG) as a TME biradical substructure forms its chromophoric part; and (2) charge transfer from the donor substituents. The non-bonding nature of the S atom, in the bare dye, with its neighbouring N/C atom (of the highest occupied π-MOs), led to an examination of its electronic structure using the ab initio valence bond method. The relatively large weight and energetic stability of the biradicaloid VB structures compared to those of the ylidic structures clearly disclosed the importance of biradicaloid structures in the overall resonance of the bare dye. Their utility as singlet fission materials was screened using singlet and triplet energy-based molecular structure activity criteria. The results were encouraging, demanding experiments to reaffirm the materials' usefulness.

Near-infrared dyes for two-photon absorption in the short-wavelength infrared: strategies towards optical power limiting

The recent advances in the field of two-photon absorbing chromophores in the short-wavelength infrared spectral range (SWIR 1100–2500 nm) are summarized, highlighting the development of optical power limiting devices in this spectral range.
