Abstract
A set of mixed-substituted potassium alkylcyano- and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single-crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X-ray diffraction experiments. The 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+ -RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+ -RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+ -ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine-free borate anions, in general.

Abstract
We studied the formation and surface behavior of Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes with ligand systems derived from two nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) in solution using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). These ligand systems enabled a high solubility of the metal complexes in IL solution. The complexes were prepared by simple ligand substitution under vacuum conditions in defined excess of the coordinating ILs, [C3 CNC1 Im][Tf2 N] and [C1 CNC1 Pip][Tf2 N], to immediately yield solutions of the final products. The ILs differ in the cationic head group and the chain length of the functionalized substituent. Our XPS measurements on the neat ILs gave insights in the electronic properties of the coordinating substituents revealing differences in donation capability and stability of the complexes. Investigations on the composition of the outermost surface layers using ARXPS revealed no surface affinity of the nitrile-functionalized chains in the neat ILs. Solutions of the formed complexes in the nitrile ILs showed homogeneous distribution of the solute at the surface with the heterocyclic moieties preferentially orientated towards the vacuum, while the metal centers are rather located further away from the IL/vacuum interface.

Abstract
The synthesis of ionic liquids (ILs) usually involves two steps: (i) quaternization of a precursor followed by (ii) a salt metathesis reaction to introduce the desired anion. A consequence of the second step is that most ILs still contain some amount of the initial anion, often chloride. In this work, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) spectrometry is presented for the direct measurement of chlorides in ILs. The WDXRF settings were optimized, and the system was calibrated for the detection of chloride in several analogues of the commercially available IL Aliquat 336, [A336][X] (with X = I-, Br-, NO3 -, or SCN-). The Cl Kα intensity showed excellent linearity for samples with a conversion >0.80 (approximately Cl < 8000 ppm). Synthetic quality control samples showed that the instrumental error and deviations induced by the calibration procedure were small with maximum values of 1 and 5%, respectively. Detection and quantification limits depended strongly on the matrix (i.e., anion system and dilution) but were relatively low: 42-191 and 127-578 ppm Cl, respectively. Compared with other analytical techniques used for this purpose, the strengths of WDXRF include its ease of use, rapid measurements, the near absence of sample preparation steps, and versatility in terms of anion systems and chloride concentration range.

Abstract
The molecular dynamics simulations and Voronoi tessellation analysis of two dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) including [C5(mim)2][NTf2]2 and [C5(mim)2C4][NTf2]2 have been carried out to investigate the effects of side alkyl chain length on the structural and dynamical micro-heterogeneity of these DILs. Radial distribution functions (RDFs), spatial distribution functions (SDFs), and also neighborhood analysis of ions have been calculated to determine the arrangement of the nearest neighboring ions. To better understand the hydrogen-bonding network, microstructures, inter- and intramolecular orientations of ions in the studied DILs, different kinds of combined distribution functions (CDFs) were computed and analyzed. Also, qualitative and quantitative analyses of the structural heterogeneity were explored through total/partial structure factors, heterogeneity order parameters (HOPs), and domain analysis from Voronoi tessellation. The results showed that the side alkyl chains in DILs have significant effects on their micro-organizations in such a way that [C5(mim)2C4][NTf2]2 with longer side chains has more microstructural heterogeneity than [C5(mim)2][NTf2]2 where the linkage alkyl chain is the same in both of them. Furthermore, to shed light on the dynamical heterogeneity, ion pair, ion cage, and hydrogen-bond stabilities and also the reorientation dynamics of ions have been investigated. Results demonstrated that local dynamics differences originate from local structural heterogeneity.

Abstract
Structurally modified hydroxyl functionalized pyridinium ionic liquids (ILs), liquid at room temperature, were synthesized and characterized. Alkylated N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-pyridinium ILs were prepared from alkylpyridines via corresponding bromide salts by N-alkylation (65–93%) and final anion exchange (75–96%). Pyridinium-alkylation strongly influenced the IL physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Experimental values for the ILs physicochemical properties (density, viscosity, conductivity, and thermal decomposition temperature), were in good agreement with corresponding predicted values obtained by theoretical calculations. The pyridinium ILs have electrochemical window of 3.0–5.4 V and were thermally stable up to 405°C. The IL viscosity and density were measured over a wide temperature range (25–80°C). Pyridine alkyl-substitution strongly affected the partial positive charge on the nitrogen atom of the pyridinium cations, as shown by charge distribution calculations. On-going studies on Mg complexes of the new ILs demonstrate promising properties for high current density electrodeposition of magnesium.

Abstract
Magnesium(ii) complexes, [Mg2+(hfac-)3][Cation+], were prepared as solids from hydrophobic hexafluoroacetylacetonate ionic liquids ([Cation+][hfac-] ILs) and Mg(Tf2N)2. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C4mim]), N-butylpyridinium ([C4Pyr]), N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium ([C4Pip]), N-hexyl-N-methylmorpholinium ([C6Morp]) and N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium ([C4pyrr]) were used as cationic cores. The [C4Pip][hfac], [C4Pyr][hfac] and [C6Morp][hfac] ILs were prepared for the first time. New Mg(ii) complexes, [C4mim][Mg(hfac)3], [C4Pip][Mg(hfac)3], [C4Pyr][Mg(hfac)3], [C6Morp][Mg(hfac)3] and [C4Pyrr][Mg(hfac)3], were obtained from the [hfac] based ILs. The crystal structures of the novel Mg(ii) complexes show the coordination of three [hfac] anions to the Mg2+ ion through the two oxygen atoms of each [hfac] anion.

Abstract
We present here the possibility of forming triphilic mixtures from alkyl- and fluoroalkylimidazolium ionic liquids, thus, macroscopically homogeneous mixtures for which instead of the often observed two domains-polar and nonpolar-three stable microphases are present: polar, lipophilic, and fluorous ones. The fluorinated side chains of the cations indeed self-associate and form domains that are segregated from those of the polar and alkyl domains. To enable miscibility, despite the generally preferred macroscopic separation between fluorous and alkyl moieties, the importance of strong hydrogen bonding is shown. As the long-range structure in the alkyl and fluoroalkyl domains is dependent on the composition of the liquid, we propose that the heterogeneous, triphilic structure can be easily tuned by the molar ratio of the components. We believe that further development may allow the design of switchable, smart liquids that change their properties in a predictable way according to their composition or even their environment.

Abstract
The electrical conductivity of a series of pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids, functionalized with a nitrile (cyano) group at the end of an alkyl chain attached to the cation, was studied in the temperature range between 173 K and 393 K. The glass formation of the ionic liquids is influenced by the length of the alkyl spacer separating the nitrile function from the pyrrolidinium ring. The electrical conductivity and the viscosity do not show a monotonic dependence on the alkyl spacer length, but rather an odd-even effect. An explanation for this behavior is given, including the potential energy landscape picture for the glass transition.

Abstract
Micelles formed by the long-chain piperidinium ionic liquids (ILs) N-alkyl-N-methylpiperidinium bromide of general formula CnPDB (n = 12, 14, 16) in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) were investigated through surface tension and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Through surface tension measurements, the critical micelle concentration (cmc), the effectiveness of surface tension reduction (Πcmc), the maximum excess surface concentration (Гmax) and the minimum area occupied per surfactant molecule (Amin) can be obtained. A series of thermodynamic parameters (DG0 m, DH0 m and DS0 m) of micellization can be calculated and the results showed that the micellization was entropy-driven. In addition, the DPD simulation was performed to simulate the whole aggregation process behavior to better reveal the micelle formation process.
