Mapping the correlations between bandgap, HOMO, and LUMO trends for meta substituted Zn-MOFs

Bandgap is a key property that determines electrical and optical properties in materials. Modulating the bandgap thus is critical in developing novel materials particularly semiconductors with improved features. This study examines the bandgap, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level trends in a metal organic framework, metal-organic framework 5 (MOF-5), as a function of Hammett substituent effect (with the constant σm in the meta-position of the benzene ring) and solvent dielectric effect (with the constant ε). Specifically, experimental design and response surface methodologies helped to assess the significance of trends and correlations between these molecular properties with σm and ε. While the HOMO and LUMO decrease with increasing σm, the LUMO exhibits greater sensitivity to the substituent's electron withdrawing capability. The relative difference in these trends helps to explain why the bandgap tends to decrease with increasing σm.

Bells and Whistles on Fertilizers: Molecular Hands to Hang Nanoporous Foliar Fertilizer Reservoirs

Porous materials are highly explored platforms for fertilizer delivery. Among porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of coordination polymers in which metal ions and organic electron donors as linkers are assembled to form crystalline structures with stable nanoporosity. Selected amino acids were inherently found to have the capacity to hold the leaf cuticle. Hence, MOF synthesis was attempted in the presence of amino acids, which can act as surface terminators and can assist as hands to hold to the leaf for a controlled nutrient supply. By serendipity, the amino acids were found to act as modulators, resulting in well-stabilized porous MOF structures with iron metal nodes, which are often noted to be unstable. Thus, the composite, i.e., (MOF@aa) MOF modulated with amino acids, has efficient nutrient-feeding ability through the foliar route when compared to the control.

Efficient Ethane and Propane Separation from Natural Gas Using Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks with Interpenetrated Structures

The development of efficient technology for natural gas separation in industrial processes has become imperative. In this regard, the exploration of novel and effective adsorbents has gained significant attention. One promising approach is the metal regulation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly heterometallic MOFs, which offer greater potential for gas separation due to their diverse composition. This study presents the synthesis of a series of iron- and vanadium-based heterometallic MOFs (MIL-126), featuring interpenetrated structures, and investigates their adsorption performance for methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), and propane (C3H8). Experimental results reveal that the choice of metal combinations within the MOF framework significantly influences the adsorption performance of MIL-126. Notably, heterometallic MIL-126(Fe/Ni) exhibits a stronger binding affinity for C3H8, with an impressive uptake of 177 cm3/g. The C3H8/CH4 ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity of MIL-126(Fe/Ni) surpasses that of MIL-126(Fe) by a factor of 7, reaching a value of 853, second only to the highest reported value. Furthermore, MIL-126(Fe/Ni) exhibits remarkable potential for the recovery of pure CH4 from the equimolar C3H8/CH4 mixture, with the amount of pure CH4 approaching the maximum reported value for MOFs. Insights from isosteric heat at zero loading and Henry's coefficients indicate that the transformation of metal types leads to a change in the interaction energy between C3H8 and the framework. Furthermore, breakthrough experiments validate the effective separation capability of MIL-126(Fe/Ni) for CH4/C2H6/C3H8 mixtures. These findings underscore the remarkable potential of heterometallic MOFs in constructing a wide range of new MOFs with tailorable properties, thereby enhancing their gas separation performance.

Recent trends in wastewater treatment by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites: A critical view-point

Respecting the basic need of clean and safe water on earth for every individual, it is necessary to take auspicious steps for waste-water treatment. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising material because of their intrinsic features including the porosity and high surface area. Further, structural tunability of MOFs by following the principles of reticular chemistry, the MOFs can be functionalized for the high adsorption performance as well as adsorptive removal of target materials. However, there are still some major concerns associated with MOFs limiting their commercialization as promising adsorbents for waste-water treatment. The cost, toxicity and regenerability are the major issues to be addressed for MOFs to get insightful results. In this article, we have concise the current strategies to enhance the adsorption capacity of MOFs during the water-treatment for the removal of toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. Further, we have also discussed the role of metallic nodes, linkers and associated functional groups for effective removal of toxic water pollutants. In addition to conformist overview, we have critically analyzed the MOFs as adsorbents in terms of toxicity, cost and regenerability. These factors are utmost important to address before commercialization of MOFs as adsorbents for water-treatment. Finally, some future perspectives are discussed to give directions for potential research.

Physiochemical characterization of metal organic framework materials: A mini review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials offering exceptional performance across a myriad of applications, attributable to their remarkable physicochemical properties such as regular porosity, crystalline structure, and tailored functional groups. Despite their potential, there is a lack of dedicated reviews that focus on key physicochemical characterizations of MOFs for the beginners and new researchers in the field. This review is written based on our expertise in the synthesis and characterization of MOFs, specifically to provide a right direction for the researcher who is a beginner in this area. In this way, experimental errors can be reduced, and wastage of time and chemicals can be avoided when new researchers conduct a study. In this article, this topic is critically analyzed, and findings and conclusions are presented. We reviewed three well-known XRD techniques, including PXRD, single crystal XRD, and SAXS, which were used for XRD analysis depending on the crystal size and the quality of crystal morphology. The TGA profile was an effective factor for evaluating the quality of the activation process and for ensuring the successful investigation for other characterizations. The BET and pore size were significantly affected by the activation process and selective benzene chain cross-linkers. FTIR is a prominent method that is used to investigate the functional groups on pore surfaces, and this method is successfully used to evaluate the activation process, characterize functionalized MOFs, and estimate their applications. The most significant methods of characterization include the X-ray diffraction, which is utilized for structural identification, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which is used for exploring thermal decomposition. It is important to note that the thermal stability of MOFs is influenced by two main factors: the metal-ligand interaction and the type of functional groups attached to the organic ligand. The textural properties of the MOFs, on the other hand, can be scrutinized through nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms experiments at 77 K. However, for smaller pore size, the Argon adsorption-desorption isotherm at 87.3 K is preferred. Furthermore, the CO2 adsorption isotherm at 273 K can be used to measure ultra-micropore sizes and sizes lower than these, which cannot be measured by using the N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm at 77 K. The highest BET was observed in high-valence MOFs that are constructed based on the metal-oxo cluster, which has an excellent ability to control their textural properties. It was found that the synthesis procedure (including the choice of solvent, cross-linker, secondary metal, surface functional groups, and temperature), activation method, and pressure significantly impact the surface area of the MOF and, by extension, its structural integrity. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy plays a crucial role in identifying active MOF functional groups. Understanding these physicochemical properties and utilizing relevant characterization techniques will enable more precise MOF selection for specific applications.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks (BMOF) and BMOF- Incorporated Membranes for Energy and Environmental Applications

Bimetallic metal organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of crystalline solids and their structure comprises two metal ions in the lattice. BMOFs show a synergistic effect of two metal centres and enhanced properties compared to MOFs. By controlling the composition and relative distribution of two metal ions in the lattice the structure, morphology, and topology of BMOFs could be regulated resulting in an improvement in the tunability of pore structure, activity, and selectivity. Thus, developing BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes for applications such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and sensing is a promising strategy to mitigate environmental pollution and address the looming energy crisis. Herein we present an overview of recent advancements in the area of BMOFs and a comprehensive review of BMOF incorporated membranes reported to date. The scope, challenges as well as future perspectives for BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes are presented.

Trends in Siting of Metals in Heterometallic Nd-Yb Metal-Organic Frameworks and Molecular Crystals

Several studies suggest that metal ordering within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is important for understanding how MOFs behave in relevant applications; however, these siting trends can be difficult to determine experimentally. To garner insight into the energetic driving forces that may lead to nonrandom ordering within heterometallic MOFs, we employ density functional theory (DFT) calculations on several bimetallic metal-organic crystals composed of Nd and Yb metal atoms. We also investigate the metal siting trends for a newly synthesized MOF. Our DFT-based energy of mixing results suggest that Nd will likely occupy sites with greater access to electronegative atoms and that local homometallic domains within a mixed-metal Nd-Yb system are favored. We also explore the use of less computationally extensive methods such as classical force fields and cluster expansion models to understand their feasibility for large system sizes. This study highlights the impact of metal ordering on the energetic stability of heterometallic MOFs and crystal structures.

Bimetallic Fe/Al-MOF for the adsorptive removal of multiple dyes: optimization and modeling of batch and hybrid adsorbent-river sand column study and its application in textile industry wastewater

Bimetallic metal organic framework (MOF) has garnered interest over the years with its applications in industrial wastewater treatment. In this work, Fe-Al-1,4-benzene-dicarboxylic acid (FeAl(BDC)) MOF was synthesized, and adsorptive removal of Rhodamine B dye in batch and unique hybrid FeAl (BDC)-river sand fixed-bed column was studied. The experimental data from the batch studies corroborated well with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) (R²: 0.97) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models (R²: 0.98) and achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 48.59 mg/g in 90 min. Furthermore, a fixed-bed column study was conducted to assess the effect of varying flow rate (2, 5, 8 mL/min), bed height (5, 9, 13 cm), and feed concentration (10, 20, 30 mg/L) on the adsorption performance of FeAl(BDC) in continuous mode of operation. A uniform mixture of river sand and FeAl(BDC) by weight ratio (9:1) was packed into the column. The sand-FeAl(BDC) fixed-bed column could achieve the maximum adsorption capacity (q_exp) of 113.05 mg/g at a 5 mL/min flow rate, feed concentration of 20 mg/L, and a bed height of 13 cm. The experimental data of the column study were successfully fitted well with BDST, Thomas (q_cal: 114.94 mg/g), Yoon-Nelson, and dose-response models (q_cal: 113.41 mg/g) and R²: 0.97-0.99. The fitting parameter values from the BDST model raise the scope of viable upscaling of the fixed-bed column. In all, it is proposed that these river sand-FeAl(BDC)-based filters can be widely used in areas facing critical contamination and in poor communities with a high demand for water.

Non-Calcined Layer-Pillared Mn0.5Zn0.5 Bimetallic-Organic Framework as a Promising Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalytic generation of oxygen is of great significance for sustainable, clean, and efficient energy production. Multiple electron transfer in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and its slow kinetics represent a serious hedge for efficient water splitting, requiring the design and development of advanced electrocatalysts with porous structures, high surface areas, abundant electroactive sites, and low overpotentials. These requisites are common for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and derived materials that are promising electrocatalysts for OER. The present work reports on the synthesis and full characterization of a heteroleptic 3D MOF, [Zn₂(μ₄-odba)₂(μ-bpdh)]_n·nDMF (Zn-MUM-1), assembled from 4,4'-oxydibenzoic acid and 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene (bpdh). Besides, a series of heterometallic MnZn-MUM-1 frameworks (abbreviated as Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-MUM-1, Mn_0.66Zn_0.33-MUM-1, and Mn_0.33Zn_0.66-MUM-1) was also prepared, characterized, and used for the fabrication of working electrodes based on Ni foam (NF), followed by their exploration in OER. These noble-metal-free and robust electrocatalysts are stable and do not require pyrolysis or calcination while exhibiting better electrocatalytic performance than the parent Zn-MUM-1/NF electrode. The experimental results show that the Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-MUM-1/NF electrocatalyst features the best OER activity with a low overpotential (253 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) and Tafel slope (73 mV dec^-1) as well as significant stability after 72 h or 6000 cycles. These excellent results are explained by a synergic effect of two different metals present in the Mn-Zn MOF as well as improved charge and ion transfer, conductivity, and stability characteristics. The present study thus widens the application of heterometallic MOFs as prospective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

The pioneering role of metal-organic framework-5 in ever-growing contemporary applications - a review

MOF-5 with a Zn(ii) cluster and terephthalic acid is a distinctive porous material among the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with unique physical, chemical and mechanical properties. MOF-5 based composites possess ample applications in modern chemistry. Huge surface area, suitable pore dimensions and scope of tunability make MOF-5 noteworthy in advanced materials. The extensive features of MOF-5 provided an opportunity for researchers to explore atomic/molecular scale materials. Various MOF-5 based composites have been designed with revamped properties appropriate to the application by altering and fabricating MOF-5 in situ or using a post-synthetic approach. Surface modification via the dispersion and impregnation of active substances into the pores of MOF-5 enhances its applicability. The boundless topologies and morphologies of MOF-5 combined with other chemical entities has provided opportunities in various fields, including catalysis, gas storage and sensors. The present review illuminates the leading role of MOF-5 and its composites in contemporary applications based on the current literature in heterogeneous catalysis, H₂ and CO₂ storage and sensors.

Bimetallic Ordered Large-Pore MesoMOFs for Simultaneous Enrichment and Dephosphorylation of Phosphopeptides

Despite the fact that bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could afford multiple functionalities by a synergistic effect of individual metallic centers, their intrinsic microporous structure frequently restricts their wide applications with bulky molecules involved. An urgent need is consequently triggered to design bimetallic hierarchical mesoporous MOFs (mesoMOFs). Herein, Zr/Ce mesoMOFs with a uniform pore size of up to 8 nm was successfully synthesized by a copolymer template strategy with the aid of a Hoffmeister ion. The obtained Zr/Ce mesoMOFs feature high porosity, good chemical and thermal stabilities, and tunable element components, and up to 70% Zr could be incorporated into the mesoporous Ce-based framework without deteriorating its crystallinity. Thanks to the synergistic effect of inherent Ce and Zr as well as the large and open pore channels, a broad range of phosphopeptides with different molecule sizes could be effectively checked out, thanks to their simultaneous enrichment and dephosphorylation capabilities. Such an ability to efficiently concentrate phosphopeptides remained intact even in the presence of abundant non-phosphorylated species. The practical detection of phosphopeptides from human serum was also verified, prefiguring the great potentials of bimetallic large-pore mesoMOFs for the proteome applications.

Advanced strategies in Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Capture and Separation

The continuous carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) gas emissions associated with fossil fuel production, valorization, and utilization are serious challenges to the global environment. Therefore, several developments of CO₂ capture, separation, transportation, storage, and valorization have been explored. Consequently, we documented a comprehensive review of the most advanced strategies adopted in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO₂ capture and separation. The enhancements in CO₂ capture and separation are generally achieved due to the chemistry of MOFs by controlling pore window, pore size, open-metal sites, acidity, chemical doping, post or pre-synthetic modifications. The chemistry of defects engineering, breathing in MOFs, functionalization in MOFs, hydrophobicity, and topology are the salient advanced strategies, recently reported in MOFs for CO₂ capture and separation. Therefore, this review summarizes MOF materials' advancement explaining different strategies and their role in the CO₂ mitigations. The study also provided useful insights into key areas for further investigations.

Controllable Synthesis of 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) Benzene-Based MOFs

The growing interest in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in both industrial and scientific circles has increased in the last twenty years, owing to their crystallinity, structural versatility, and controlled porosity. In this study, we present three novel MOFs obtained from the 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) benzene (TIBM) organic linker. The formed TIBM crystal powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to estimate the morphology of the particles, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm the crystal structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for structural analysis, and thermogravimetric measurements to examine the thermal stability. The TIBM-Cu MOF showed excellent CO2 (3.60 mmol/g) adsorption capacity at 1 bar and 298 K, because of the open Cu site, compared to TIBM-Cr (1.6 mmol/g) and TIBM-Al (2.1 mmol/g). Additionally, due to the high porosity (0.3–1.5 nm), TIBM-Cu MOF showed a considerable CO2/N2 selectivity (53) compared to TIBM-Al (35) and TIBM-Cr (10).

The Review of Carbon Capture-Storage Technologies and Developing Fuel Cells for Enhancing Utilization

The amount of CO2 released in the atmosphere has been at a continuous surge in the last decade, and in order to protect the environment from global warming, it is necessary to employ techniques like carbon capture. Developing technologies like Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage aims at mitigating the CO2 content from the air we breathe and has garnered immense research attention. In this review, the authors have aimed to discuss the various technologies that are being used to capture the CO2 from the atmosphere, store it and further utilize it. For utilization, researchers have developed alternatives to make profits from CO2 by converting it into an asset. The development of newer fuel cells that consume CO2 in exchange for electrical power to drive the industries and produce valuable hydrocarbons in the form of fuel has paved the path for more research in the field of carbon utilization. The primary focus on the article is to inspect the environmental and economic feasibility of novel technologies such as fuel cells, different electrochemical processes, and the integration of artificial intelligence and data science in them, which are designed for mitigating the percentage of CO2 in the air.

Metal Exchange Boosts the CO2 Selectivity of Metal Organic Frameworks Having Zn-Oxide Nodes

A large number of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized to date have nodes with a Zn metal, and a detailed understanding of their gas separation efficiency upon metal exchange is needed to pave the way for designing the next generation of MOFs. In this work, we implemented a protocol to identify MOFs with Zn nodes out of 10,221 MOFs and classified them into two main groups. Depending on the pore properties and adsorption selectivities, two MOFs from IRMOFs and two MOFs from ZnO-MOFs were selected. The metal atom (Zn) of the selected four MOFs was exchanged with eight different metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Ti, and V), and 32 different metal-exchanged MOFs (M-MOFs) were obtained. By performing grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we investigated the influence of the metal type on the CO2/H2 and CO2/CH4 separation performances of these 32 M-MOFs. Physical properties of the MOFs such as the pore size and surface area, and chemical properties such as the partial charges of the atoms in the framework were investigated to understand the effect of metal exchange on the gas adsorption and separation performances of materials. Exchange of Zn with V and Cr led to a remarkable increase in the CO2 uptakes of selected MOFs and these increases were reflected on the adsorption selectivity, working capacity, and the adsorbent performance score of MOFs. The exchange of Zn with V increased the selectivity of one of the MOFs from 119 to 355 and the adsorbent performance score from 70 to 444 mol/kg, while for another MOF, exchange of Zn with Cr increased the selectivity from 161 to 921 and the adsorbent performance score from 162 to 1233 mol/kg under the condition of vacuum swing adsorption. The molecular level insights we provided to explain the improvement in the gas separation performances of M-MOFs will serve as a guide to design materials with exceptional CO2 separation performances.

Factors Affecting Hydrogen Adsorption in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Short Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have significant potential for hydrogen storage. The main benefit of MOFs is their reversible and high-rate hydrogen adsorption process, whereas their biggest disadvantage is related to their operation at very low temperatures. In this study, we describe selected examples of MOF structures studied for hydrogen adsorption and different factors affecting hydrogen adsorption in MOFs. Approaches to improving hydrogen uptake are reviewed, including surface area and pore volume, in addition to the value of isosteric enthalpy of hydrogen adsorption. Nanoconfinement of metal hydrides inside MOFs is proposed as a new approach to hydrogen storage. Conclusions regarding MOFs with incorporated metal nanoparticles, which may be used as nanoscaffolds and/or H₂ sorbents, are summarized as prospects for the near future.

Two-Dimensional MOF Modulated Fiber Nanogenerator for Effective Acoustoelectric Conversion and Human Motion Detection

The real-time application of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs) under a harsh environment remains a challenge due to lower output performance and poor durability. Thus, the development of flexible, sensitive, and stable PNGs became a topic of interest to capture different human motions including gesture monitoring to speech recognition. Herein, a scalable approach is adapted where naphthylamine bridging a [Cd(II)-μ-I₄] two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF)-reinforced poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite nanofibers mat is prepared to fabricate a flexible and sensitive composite piezoelectric nanogenerator (C-PNG). The needle-shaped MOF was successfully synthesized by the layering and diffusion of two different solutions. The incorporation of single-crystalline 2D MOF ensures a large content of electroactive phases (98%) with a resultant high-magnitude piezoelectric coefficient of 41 pC/N in a composite nanofibers mat due to the interfacial specific interaction with -CH₂-/-CF₂- dipoles of PVDF. As an outcome, C-PNG generates high electrical output (open-circuit voltage of 22 V and maximum power density of 24 μW/cm²) with a very fast response time (t_r ≈ 5 ms) under periodic pressure imparting stimuli. Benefiting from bending and twisting functionality, C-PNG is capable of scavenging biomechanical energy by mimicking complex musculoskeletal motions that broaden its application in wearable electronics and fabric integrated medical devices. In addition, C-PNG also demonstrates an efficient acoustic vibration to electric energy conversion capability with an improved power density and acoustic sensitivity of 6.25 μW and 0.95 V/Pa, respectively. The overall energy conversion efficiency is sufficient to operate several consumer electronics without any energy storage unit. This acoustic observation is further validated by the finite element method-based theoretical simulation. Overall, the 2D MOF-based device design strategy opens up a new possibility to develop a human-motion compatible energy generator and a self-powered acoustic sensor to power up electronic gadgets as well as low-frequency noise detection.

Metal–Organic Frameworks as Versatile Platforms for Organometallic Chemistry

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging porous materials with highly tunable structures developed in the 1990s, while organometallic chemistry is of fundamental importance for catalytic transformation in the academic and industrial world for many decades. Through the years, organometallic chemistry has been incorporated into functional MOF construction for diverse applications. Here, we will focus on how organometallic chemistry is applied in MOF design and modifications from linker-centric and metal-cluster-centric perspectives, respectively. Through structural design, MOFs can function as a tailorable platform for traditional organometallic transformations, including reaction of alkenes, cross-coupling reactions, and C–H activations. Besides, an overview will be made on other application categories of organometallic MOFs, such as gas adsorption, magnetism, quantum computing, and therapeutics.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hybrid Metal Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Membrane for Efficient H2/CO2 Gas Separation

In this paper, we propose mixed metal ions in the node of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) structure. The hybrid metal ZIF is formed for the gas separation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In the first stage, the nanoparticles were prepared as a coating on a substrate, and acting as secondary growing nuclei. The hybrid metal ZIF structures were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). N₂ adsorption–desorption isotherms determined surface area, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure and surface morphology. The hybrid metal ZIF-8-67 powder had the largest surface area (1260.40 m² g⁻¹), and the nanoparticles (100 nm) could be fully dense-coated on the substrate to benefit the subsequent membrane growth. In the second stage, we prepared the hybrid metal ZIF-8-67 membrane on the pre-seeding substrate with mixed metal nanoparticles of cobalt and zinc, by the microwave hydrothermal method. Cobalt ions were identified in the tetrahedral coordination through UV–Vis, and the membrane structure and morphology were determined by XRD and SEM. Finally, a gas permeation analyzer (GPA) was used to determine the gas separation performance of the hybrid metal ZIF-8-67 membrane. We successfully introduced zinc ions and cobalt ions into the ZIF structure, where cobalt had a strong interaction with CO₂. Therefore, GPA analysis showed an excellent H₂/CO₂ separation factor due to lower CO₂ permeability. The CO₂ permeance was ~0.65 × 10⁻⁸ mol m⁻² s⁻¹ Pa⁻¹, and the separation factors for H₂/CO₂ and H₂/N₂ were 9.2 and 2.9, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the hybrid metal ZIF-8-67 membrane has a superior H₂/CO₂ separation factor, which can be attributed to its very high specific surface area and structure. Based on the above, hybrid metal ZIF-8-67 membranes are expected to be applied in hydrogen or carbon dioxide gas separation and purification.

Three-Dimensional MOF-Assisted Self-Polarized Ferroelectret: An Effective Autopowered Remote Healthcare Monitoring Approach

In recent years, flexible and sensitive pressure sensors are of extensive interest in healthcare monitoring, artificial intelligence, and national security. In this context, we report the synthetic procedure of a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) comprising cadmium (Cd) metals as nodes and isoniazid (INH) moieties as organic linkers (CdI₂-INH═CMe₂) for designing self-polarized ferroelectret-based highly mechano-sensitive skin sensors. The as-synthesized MOF preferentially nucleates the stable piezoelectric β-phase in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and also gives rise to a porous ferroelectret composite film. Benefiting from the porous structure of 3D MOFs, composite ferroelectret film-based ultrasensitive pressure sensor (mechano-sensitivity of 8.52 V/kPa within 1 kPa pressure range) as well as high-throughput ( power density of 32 μW/cm²) mechanical energy harvester (MEH) has been designed. Simulation-based finite element method (FEM) analysis indicates that the geometrical stress confinement effect within the interpore region of the ferroelectret structure synergistically influences the mechano-electrical property of the MEH. In addition, 143 pC/N (∼4.5 times higher than commercial piezoelectric PVDF films) piezoelectric charge coefficient (d₃₃) magnitude and superior response time (t_r ∼ 8 ms) of this composite ferroelectret film enable the detection of different physiological signals such as coughing, pronunciation, and gulping behavior, making it a promising candidate for early intervention of healthcare, which may play a significant role in accurate alert of influenza and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-related symptoms. In addition, MEH enables the tracking of the subtle pressure change in the wrist pulse, indicating its usefulness in effective mechano-sensitivity. Since the cardiovascular signal is one of the vital parameters that can determine the on-going physiological conditions, the wireless transmission of the detected wrist pulse signal has been demonstrated. All of these features coupled with wireless data transmission indicate the promising application of MOF-assisted composite ferroelectret films in noninvasive real-time remote healthcare monitoring.

Properties of Cobalt- and Nickel-Doped Zif-8 Framework Materials and Their Application in Heavy-Metal Removal from Wastewater

Heterometallic zeolite imidazole framework materials (ZIF) exhibit highly attractive properties and have drawn increased attention. In this study, a petal-like zinc based ZIF-8 crystal and materials doped with cobalt and nickel ions were efficiently prepared in an aqueous solution at room temperature. It was observed that doped cobalt and nickel had obviously different effects on the morphology of ZIF-8. Cobalt ions were beneficial for the formation of ZIF-8, while addition of nickel ions tended to destroy the original configuration. Then we compared the absorption ability for metal ions between petal-like ZIF-8 and its doped derivatives with anion dichromate ions (Cr₂O₇^2-) and cation copper ions (Cu²⁺) as the absorbates. Results indicated that saturated adsorption capacities of Co@ZIF-8 and Ni@ZIF-8 for Cr₂O₇^2- reach 43.00 and 51.60 mg/g, while they are 1191.67 and 1066.67 mg/g for Cu²⁺, respectively, which are much higher than the original ZIF-8 materials. Furthermore, both the heterometallic ZIF-8 materials show fast adsorption kinetics to reach adsorption equilibrium. Therefore, petal-like ZIF-8 with doped ions can be produced through a facile method and can be an excellent candidate for further applications in heavy-metal treatment.

Electronic Structure Modeling of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Owing to their molecular building blocks, yet highly crystalline nature, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) sit at the interface between molecule and material. Their diverse structures and compositions enable them to be useful materials as catalysts in heterogeneous reactions, electrical conductors in energy storage and transfer applications, chromophores in photoenabled chemical transformations, and beyond. In all cases, density functional theory (DFT) and higher-level methods for electronic structure determination provide valuable quantitative information about the electronic properties that underpin the functions of these frameworks. However, there are only two general modeling approaches in conventional electronic structure software packages: those that treat materials as extended, periodic solids, and those that treat materials as discrete molecules. Each approach has features and benefits; both have been widely employed to understand the emergent chemistry that arises from the formation of the metal-organic interface. This Review canvases these approaches to date, with emphasis placed on the application of electronic structure theory to explore reactivity and electron transfer using periodic, molecular, and embedded models. This includes (i) computational chemistry considerations such as how functional, k-grid, and other model variables are selected to enable insights into MOF properties, (ii) extended solid models that treat MOFs as materials rather than molecules, (iii) the mechanics of cluster extraction and subsequent chemistry enabled by these molecular models, (iv) catalytic studies using both solids and clusters thereof, and (v) embedded, mixed-method approaches, which simulate a fraction of the material using one level of theory and the remainder of the material using another dissimilar theoretical implementation.

A Heterometallic Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Bearing an Unprecedented One-Dimensional Branched-Chain Secondary Building Unit

A heterometallic metal−organic framework (MOF) of [Cd₆Ca₄(BTB)₆(HCOO)₂(DEF)₂(H₂O)₁₂]∙DEF∙xSol (1, H₃BTB = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoic acid; DEF = N,N′-diethylformamide; xSol. = undefined solvates within the pore) was prepared by solvothermal reaction of Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O, CaO and H₃BTB in a mixed solvent of DEF/H₂O/HNO₃. The compatibility of these two divalent cations from different blocks of the periodic table results in a solid-state structure consisting of an unusual combination of a discrete V-shaped heptanuclear cluster of [Cd₂Ca]₂Ca′ and an infinite one-dimensional (1D) chain of [Cd₂CaCa′]_n that are orthogonally linked via a corner-shared Ca²⁺ ion (denoted as Ca′), giving rise to an unprecedented branched-chain secondary building unit (SBU). These SBUs propagate via tridentate BTB to yield a three-dimensional (3D) structure featuring a corner-truncated P4₁ helix in MOF 1. This outcome highlights the unique topologies possible via the combination of carefully chosen s- and d-block metal ions with polydentate ligands.

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have two different metal ions in the inorganic nodes. According to the metal distribution, the architecture of bimetallic MOFs can be classified into two main categories namely solid solution and core-shell structures. Various strategies have been developed to prepare bimetallic MOFs with controlled compositions and structures. Bimetallic MOFs show a synergistic effect and enhanced properties compared to their monometallic counterparts and have found many applications in the fields of gas adsorption, catalysis, energy storage and conversion, and luminescence sensing. Moreover, bimetallic MOFs can serve as excellent precursors/templates for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials with controlled sizes, compositions, and structures. Bimetallic MOF derivatives show exposed active sites, good stability and conductivity, enabling them to extend their applications to the catalysis of more challenging reactions and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. This review provides an overview of the significant advances in the development of bimetallic MOFs and their derivatives with special emphases on their preparation and applications.

The chemistry of Ce-based metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread attention due to their modular construction that allows the tuning of their properties. Within this vast class of compounds, metal carboxylates containing tri- and tetravalent metal ions have been in the focus of many studies due to their often high thermal and chemical stabilities. Cerium has a rich chemistry, which depends strongly on its oxidation state. Ce(iii) exhibits properties typically observed for rare earth elements, while Ce(iv) is mostly known for its oxidation behaviour. In MOF chemistry this is reflected in their unique optical and catalytic properties. The synthetic parameters for Ce(iii)- and Ce(iv)-MOFs also differ substantially and conditions must be chosen to prevent reduction of Ce(iv) for the formation of the latter. Ce(iii)-MOFs are usually reported in comprehensive studies together with those constructed with other RE elements and normally they are isostructural. They exhibit a greater structural diversity, which is reflected in the larger variety of inorganic building units. In contrast, the synthesis conditions of Ce(iv)-MOFs were only recently (2015) established. These lead selectively to hexanuclear Ce-O clusters that are well-known for Zr-MOFs and therefore very similar structural and isoreticluar chemistry is found. Hence Ce(iv)-MOFs exhibit often high porosity, while only a few porous Ce(iii)-MOFs have been described. Some of these show structural flexibility which makes them interesting for separation processes. For Ce(iv)-MOFs the redox properties are most relevant. Thus, they are intensively discussed for catalytic, photocatalytic and sensing applications. In this perspective, the synthesis, structural chemistry and properties of Ce-MOFs are summarized.

MxOy-ZrO2 (M = Zn, Co, Cu) Solid Solutions Derived from Schiff Base-Bridged UiO-66 Composites as High-Performance Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation

Metal-organic frameworks have been exploited as excellent solid precursors and templates for the preparation integrated nanocatalysts with multicomponent and hierarchical structures. Herein, a novel synthetic protocol has been developed to fabricate versatile Zr-based solid solutions (such as ZnO-ZrO₂, Co₃O₄-ZrO₂, and CuO-ZrO₂) via pyrolysis of Schiff base-modified UiO-66 octahedrons (size <100 nm), which were then utilized as efficient catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation. The Schiff base serves as an effective bridge to dope secondary metal ions into UiO-66 frameworks with controlled amounts of 0.13-8.8 wt %, which are initially hard to achieve. Interestingly, by simply changing the loading metal ions, the selectivity of C₁ hydrogenation products can be facilely tuned. For instance, the maximum CO₂ conversion of ZnO-ZrO₂, Co₃O₄-ZrO₂, and CuO-ZrO₂ solid solutions were 5.8, 11.4, and 22.5%, with the main product selectivity of 70% CH₃OH, 92.5% CH₄, and 86.7% CO, respectively. Moreover, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra characterization reveals that the significant difference in C₁ product selectivity is mainly determined by the balance of *HCOO, *CH₃O, and *CO intermediate species over the Zr-based solid solutions.

Mixed-Metal MOFs: Unique Opportunities in Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Functionality and Design

Mixed-metal metal-organic frameworks (MM-MOFs) can be considered to be those MOFs having two different metals anywhere in the structure. Herein we summarize the various strategies for the preparation of MM-MOFs and some of their applications in adsorption, gas separation, and catalysis. It is shown that compared to homometallic MOFs, MM-MOFs bring about the opportunity to take advantage of the complexity and the synergism derived from the presence of different metal ions in the structure of MOFs. This is reflected in a superior performance and even stability of MM-MOFs respect to related single-metal MOFs. Emphasis is made on the use of MM-MOFs as catalysts for tandem reactions.

Effect of Co(II) dopant on the removal of Methylene Blue by a dense copper terephthalate

In this research, for the first time, a series of Co(II) doped copper terephthalate (CoX-CuBDC, where X is doping percentage) were successfully synthesized via solvothermal method and were tested for dye removal application. The physical properties of CoX-CuBDC were studied by several techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The incorporation of Co(II) dopant leads to isomorphic substitution of Cu(II) in the CuBDC framework with the maximum doping percentage of 22. Doping and parent MOFs which are non-porous were used for removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solution. Adsorption capacity of Co22-CuBDC and CuBDC are 52 and 58 mg/g, respectively, both of which are higher than the adsorption capacity recorded from several high porosity MOFs. Adsorption kinetic studies indicate that adsorption process follows pseudo-second order model while the adsorption mechanism is dominated by electrostatic attraction. Overall, even though these materials show non-porous characteristic, it can be used effectively in wastewater treatment application.

Vibrational Fingerprinting of Defects Sites in Thin Films of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

Surface‐mounted metal–organic frameworks (SURMOFs) are crystalline films of MOFs and have garnered a great deal of attention in the past years. So far, thin‐film MOF research has been mainly focused on the synthesis and the exploration of potential applications of these materials, while a detailed understanding of their growth is still lacking. In this report evidence is provided for the inter‐grown nature of surface‐mounted thin films of Zn‐ZIF‐8 (SURZIF‐8; ZIF=zeolitic imidazolate framework). Two distinct SURZIF‐8 thin films have been made through layer‐by‐layer (LBL) growth after applying 20 and 50 LBL cycles. They have been characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman micro‐spectroscopy. A detailed analysis of the Raman mapping data, inter alia using principal component analysis (PCA), revealed the existence of phase boundaries within the 20‐cycle thin film, while the 50‐cycle thin film is chemically more homogeneous. To further analyze these chemical heterogeneities, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed of three theoretical models providing spectroscopic fingerprints of the molecular vibrations associated with the Zn‐ZIF‐8 thin films. Based on these calculations and the experimental data distinct vibrational markers indicative for the presence of defects sites were identified.

Novel and Versatile Cobalt Azobenzene-Based Metal-Organic Framework as Hydrogen Adsorbent

A novel URJC-3 material based on cobalt and 5,5'-(diazene-1,2-diyl)diisophthalate ligand, containing Lewis acid and basic sites, has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound URJC-3, with polyhedral morphology, crystallizes in the tetragonal and P4₃ 2₁ 2 space group, exhibiting a three-dimensional structure with small channels along a and b axes. This material was fully characterized, and its hydrogen adsorption properties were estimated for a wide range of temperatures (77-298 K) and pressures (1-170 bar). The hydrogen storage capacity of URJC-3 is quite high in relation to its moderate surface area, which is probably due to the confinement effect of hydrogen molecules inside its reduced pores of 6 Å, which is close the ionic radii of hydrogen molecules. The storage capacity of this material is not only higher than that of active carbon and purified single-walled carbon nanotubes, but also surpasses the gravimetric hydrogen uptake of most MOF materials.
