Abstract
Background Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI) have emerged as a very significant public health and social problem, especially among children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of traumatic dental injuries to permanent anterior teeth in school going children of Kolkata aged 7-14 years. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3762 school going children attending various private and public schools of Kolkata aged 7-14 years. A multistage random clustering sampling technique was adopted to select the children.Type of trauma using Ellis and Davey classification of fractures along with Andresen's Epidemiological Classification of Traumatic Injuries to Anterior Teeth, including WHO codes, was used. All values were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05. Results Prevalence of TDI to anterior teeth was found to be 9.89%. The mean age of children who presented with TDI was 11.06 ± 1.99.years. The most common place of occurrence of TDI was home. Falls were the most common causes of trauma. Children belonging to higher socioeconomic status were observed to have an increased prevalence of TDIs.The highest potential risk factor for the occurrence of trauma was a past history of trauma. Conclusion Present study found a prevalence of 9.89%, and a very low percentage of children had received treatment.

Abstract
Background Tooth injuries lead to functional, aesthetic, and psychological disorders, accompanied by the great concern of the child, the parents, and the dentist. Aim (a) To assess the prevalence of traumatic dental injury (TDI) and its relationship to risk variables among 8-15-year-old school children in Mahbubnagar, India. (b) To collect baseline data as there are limited reports of TDI studies in South India to date. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 6643 children from 78 schools in Mahbubnagar using a multilevel random sampling method. The permanent incisors were examined according to the WHO classification using a standard oral mirror and probe. Individuals with clinical evidence of trauma were asked about the details of the injury event using a structured questionnaire. The chi-square test analyzed the distribution of all measurements in this study with a statistical significance of 0.05. Results Among the 6643 children from the 78 schools surveyed, 9.3% experienced TDI. TDI occurred in 68% of boys, which was about twice as high in girls at 32%. The most commonly affected teeth were the maxillary central incisors. A higher number of children with an incisal overjet more significant than 3 mm had TDI than the children less than 3 mm, although this difference was not statistically significant. The lip closure incompetence was more common in children with TDI. The most frequent causes of TDI were falls, and the site of occurrence was school. Type I fractures were the most prevalent and most went untreated. Conclusion The high level of dental trauma and the low percentage of children with trauma seeking treatment emphasize the need for greater awareness among the Mahbubnagar children.

Abstract
Background With the decrease in the incidence of dental caries globally, traumatic dental injury (TDI) has emerged as a major cause of morbidity and distress among adolescents. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of TDI and explore its association with malocclusion and nutritional status among adolescent population of Udupi taluk, Karnataka state, India. Methods The sample consisted of 770 children, from randomly selected schools in Udupi taluk. An anthropometric measurement was done to record the "body mass index", an oral examination was done to record the "Dental Aesthetic Index" for malocclusion and "Andreasen classification" for TDI. Statistical analysis included chi-square test and bivariate and multivariate binary logistic regression. A p value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The prevalence of TDI was 11.8%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 20.3%. The prevalence of malocclusion recorded in the study population was 49.8%. When prevalence of TDI was compared against gender, the type of school attended, and presence/absence of malocclusion, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference in prevalence of trauma between the aforementioned parameters (p ≤ 0.05). Results of the multivariate analysis through logistic regression indicated that being a male [3.87 (3.21-4.72)], attending a public school [1.41 (1.19-1.63)], and having malocclusion [1.55 (1.32-1.71)] significantly increased the odds of sustaining TDI. Conclusion The results indicated a strong association between TDI, gender, the type of school attended, and malocclusion, and they have important implications toward the health and well-being of the individual communities.

Abstract
Aim To determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in permanent anterior teeth and their association with risk factors among children aged 7-13 years of government and private schools in Kakinada and Rajanagaram of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was carried out among 2,325 school children aged 7-13 years. Each child was examined for TDI, degree of overjet, molar relation, lip coverage, and facial profile. The results were analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software and the Chi-squared test was used to compare qualitative data. Results The results show that the prevalence of trauma was found to be 12.1%, and there was no disparity between government or private schools and urban and rural areas. There was no much sex predilection. High school children are more prone to TDI than primary school children. The most common place was found to be home, and the most common cause is unknown. Maxillary central incisors are the most commonly affected and enamel fracture is the most common fracture. Among the subjects with trauma, only 4.1% sought treatment. Conclusion The subjects with trauma in the present study are found to be having a positive association with risk factors, such as increased overjet, class II division 1 molar relationship, convex facial profile, and inadequate lip coverage. Evidence of a lower rate of treatment outcomes shows the need for increased awareness among parents, teachers, and healthcare providers and the elaboration of prevention strategies for TDI at the population level. Abstract
Introduction This survey reports the incidence of traumatic dental injuries in an adult population attending an adult dental trauma clinic in a London teaching hospital.Materials and methods Retrospective data were collected from patients attending an adult dental trauma clinic between 2012 and 2018.Results In total, 1,769 patients attended, with more men seen (1,030; 58.2%) compared to women (739; 41.8%) and this was statistically significant (p <0.05). The most common aetiological factor was an accidental fall (728; 41.15%), followed by assaults (413; 23.35%), bicycle accidents (253; 14.3%), sports injuries (132; 7.46%) and road traffic accidents (84; 4.75%). Lateral luxation (833) was the most common traumatic injury and this was followed by avulsions (362; 17%). Enamel-dentine fractures were the most common type of fracture injury (1,273; 64%).Discussion This retrospective survey attempts to report on the incidence of traumatic dental injuries in a London-based cohort of patients attending a specialised dental trauma clinic. In line with other reports, there were more men than women affected, which is probably attributed to behavioural activities.Conclusion(s) Accidental falls are the most common cause of a traumatic dental injury, lateral luxation was the most common type of displacement injury and enamel-dentine fractures were the most common type of fracture injury.

Abstract
Aim This retrospective study aimed to analyze dental traumatic injuries and their management in children up to 16 years of age. Materials and methods Records of the patients who sustained dental trauma from 2013 to 2018 were evaluated for age, gender, etiology, type of injuries, and their management. Children were divided into three groups-primary (0-5 years), mixed (6-11 years), and permanent dentition group (12-16 years). Dental trauma was assessed by Ellis and Davey's classification of tooth fracture along with other associated injuries. Results Total records of 466 children with 750 injured teeth (665 permanent and 85 primary) were evaluated. Males were reported twice as females. Fall was noted as the major etiological factor (93.1%). The highest frequency of dental trauma was observed in the permanent dentition group (54.7%). Ellis class IV fracture was the most common dental injury and maxillary central incisor was the most frequently injured tooth. Soft tissue injury was noted as the most commonly associated injury. Most of the dental traumatic injuries in permanent teeth were treated by root canal treatment while the majority of primary dentitions were managed by observation and wound care. Conclusion Ellis class IV fracture was noted as the most frequent type of dental injury and fall was a major etiological factor. The permanent dentition group of children was more affected and a male predominance was observed. Clinical significance The information gained from the present study would help in providing various preventive modalities to parents, caregivers, and teachers regarding these injuries in the future and also facilitate several new researches in this field. Abstract
Background/purpose Dental injuries in children have functional, esthetic, and psychological effects, with consequences for the child, parent, and dentist. This study assessed the pattern of traumatic dental injuries and their relationship with predisposing factors among 12- and 15-year-old school children in Kanpur, India. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1100 boys and girls aged 12 or 15 years. Anterior permanent teeth were examined based on the modified Ellis classification. Type of damage, size of incisal overjet, and adequacy of lip coverage were also recorded. Chi-square tests and multiple regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results The prevalence of traumatic dental injuries to anterior teeth was 10.9%. Age and gender distribution indicated that most injuries occurred in 15-year-old age group (11.3%) and among boys (11.5%). The gender-related difference was statistically significant (p < 0.024). Maxillary central incisors (83.7%) were frequently involved. The predominant injury type was enamel fracture (68.3%) mainly due to falls (52.5%). Increased overjet, inadequate lip coverage, type of school, and gender were significant contributing factors for traumatic dental injuries. Conclusion Study reveals the frequency and cause of traumatic injuries to anterior teeth, which assists in identifying risk groups and treatment needs in order to establish effective preventive strategies.

Abstract
Aims The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) to anterior teeth in 8–12-year-old schoolchildren of Patiala city in North India and to study the risk factors related to dental trauma. Materials and methods An epidemiological cross-sectional survey was conducted. The study consisted of 3,000 schoolchildren from various schools of Patiala city in North India. The body mass index was calculated. Lip competency, anterioposterior molar relationship, overjet, and overbite were examined. Dental injuries to anterior teeth were recorded according to the Ellis classification. Data were collected on a proforma. Results The prevalence was found to be 11.4%. Maximum injuries occurred in the 11-year age group and the boys:girls ratio was 1.7:1. The home was the most common place with fall being the most common reason. The relationship between obesity and dental trauma was found to be statistically insignificant, whereas a statistically significant relationship was found between TDIs and incompetent lips, incisal overjet ≥5 mm, and Angle's class II div I molar relation. The Ellis class I fracture was the most predominant type. Conclusion The high prevalence of dental trauma stresses the need for the development of preventive strategies. Abstract
The study assessed risk factors for traumatic dental injuries (TDI) using experiences along the life course. A retrospective longitudinal study, including historical clinical data, was conducted on 16-yr-old pupils in western Norway. All first-grade pupils born in 1997 and attending public high schools were invited to participate (n = 5,184). Participants responded to an electronically administered closed-ended questionnaire (39.6%, n = 2,055). Information on the occurrence of TDI and events during the life course (categorized as socio-economic, biological, psychosocial, and behavioural indicators) was collected. Variables with a significant bivariate association with three different dependent variables (TDI, severity of TDI, and multiple episodes of TDI) were tested in a hierarchical logistic regression analysis. Traumatic dental injuries were more frequent among boys, adolescents of higher socio-economic status, and adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores. Moderate and severe TDIs were more frequent among adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores and among adolescents participating in the sport of wrestling. Multiple episodes of TDI were more frequent among adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores and among adolescents participating in sports activities. Incorporation of different life-course indicators is important in evaluating TDI severity and repeated incidents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although dental trauma and its unfavorable sequelae are considered major public health problems worldwide, the published data on the prevalence of traumatic crown injuries (TCIs) in Germany are lacking. Therefore, the present study assessed the prevalence of TCIs among adolescents in Bavaria, Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ethical approval and parental consents were obtained, and population-based information from 10- (N = 1158), 12- (N = 416), and 15-year-olds (N = 1302) from two different cohort studies performed in Bavaria (GINIplus/LISA and LAGZ) were examined for the presence of TCIs, dental caries, and restorations. Statistical comparisons were made using Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The prevalence of TCIs was 6.3% in the 10- and 12-year-old children and 14.0% in 15-year-old children, and a higher prevalence was observed in boys than in girls. Most (87.5%) of the traumatized teeth were maxillary incisors. The caries prevalence was low in all three populations. CONCLUSION The prevalence of TCIs in Bavarian adolescents at a low risk for caries was found to be low. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Dental trauma is a prevalent event in children and adolescents, and incisors are the most affected teeth. Therefore, dental practitioners should be able to manage the spectrum of traumatic injuries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orofacial trauma is one of the most prevailing oral health problems among the children. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of traumatic injuries and to correlate the causes, specific age groups, socio-economic status, occlusal relationship and ascertain the percentage of those seeking the treatment among school children in Indore (Madhya Pradesh, India). MATERIALS AND METHODS Five thousand school going children aged between 3 and 17 years belonging to different zones of Indore were randomly selected and divided into three age groups, Group I - 3-5 years; Group II - 6-11 years and Group III - 12-17 years. The study was carried out by a single investigator and assisted by a well-trained cooperative alert assistant. An American Dental Association (ADA) type 3 examination was carried out using a mouth mirror and explorer under sufficient natural light. Traumatic injuries to the anterior teeth were recorded according to the Ellis and Davey classification. Details were noted concerning the gender, age and socio-economic status of patient; cause of trauma, number, type and relationship of teeth, lip competence and the level of unmet treatment needs. RESULTS One thousand and seventeen children had traumatized anterior teeth with a mean prevalence of 20.34%. Prevalence was more in boys than in girls with a ratio of 2:1. Single tooth injury was observed in 81.7%. The prevalence of trauma was highest in the upper socio-economic class (31.4%) and least was seen in lower class (14.8%). The most common cause of trauma was from a fall (36.72%). Maximum prevalence was seen in either class II division 1 malocclusion or distal step terminal plane primary molar relationship. Only 2.95% of the children had undergone treatment for traumatically injured anterior teeth. CONCLUSION High prevalence of traumatized teeth with the low percentage of children receiving treatment emphasizes the need for education programs about traumatic dental injuries that should be directed towards the children, parents and school teachers.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of periodontal diseases and traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in children and adolescents, which are serious public health problems worldwide. Periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, commonly affect the oral soft tissues and teeth and often co-occur with other chronic diseases. TDIs are prevalent from an early age and carry high treatment costs. Behavioral and environmental factors contribute to both TDIs and periodontal diseases, but their etiology varies according to population characteristics and case definition. Both conditions may lead to pain, function impairment, esthetic problems, and psychosocial effects, with major consequences on quality of life.

Abstract
Background Dental injuries result in functional, esthetic and psychological disturbances accompanied by great concern from the child, the parent and the dentist. Oral injuries are fourth most common area of bodily injuries among 7-30 year-old individuals. Aim a) To assess the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) and their relation with predisposing factors among 8-15 years old school children in Indore city, India.b) To collect baseline data as there have been no reported studies of TDI in central India to this date. Methods A cross sectional study was carried out among 4000 children of 60 schools in Indore using multistage random sampling method. Examination of permanent incisor teeth was done in accordance with the modified Elli's and Davey Classification using a standard mouth mirror and probe. Subjects who had clinical evidence of trauma were interviewed for details of the injury event by using structured questionnaire. Chi square test was used to analyze the distribution of all the measurement in this study at the statistical significance of 0.05. Results Among the 4000 children of 60 schools examined, 10.2% experienced TDI. 68.38% boys experienced TDI, which was approximately twice as higher in females being 31.62%. The most commonly affected teeth were maxillary central incisors. A higher number of children with incisal overjet greater than 3 mm had TDI than those with less than 3 mm, although this difference was not statistically significant. Lip closure incompetence was found to be more common in subjects having a TDI. Fall was the most common cause for TDI and place of occurrence was home. Most common type of fracture was class I and most of them were untreated. Conclusion The high level of dental trauma and low percentage of children with trauma seeking treatment stresses the need for increased awareness in Indore population.

Abstract
Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) account for a considerable proportion of bodily injuries. Nevertheless, global TDI frequency is unknown, probably because TDI diagnosis is not standardized. This study estimated world TDI frequency. A literature search (publication years 1996-2016) was aimed at covering as many countries, communities, ethnic groups as possible, thus achieving high generalizability. In particular, non-specific keywords, no language restrictions, and large databanks were used. Observational studies reporting proportions of individuals with at least one TDI (prevalence) and who developed TDI (incidence rate) were considered. Prevalence rates to permanent dentition, primary dentition and in 12-year-olds, incidence rate to any tooth for any age, male-to-female prevalence ratio (PR) in 12-year-olds, with 95% confidence intervals (95 CIs), were extracted/calculated. Study quality, Z-score distribution, funnel plot symmetry analysis, between-study heterogeneity, sensitivity, and subgroup analyses were performed. Selected primary studies were 102 (permanent dentition; 268 755 individuals; median age, 13.8 years), 46 (primary dentition; 59 436 individuals; median age, 3.4 years), 42 (12-year-olds; 33 829 individuals), 11 (incidence rate; 233 480 person-years; median age, 7.8 years), and 31 (PR; 16 003 males, 16 006 females). World TDI frequency resulted as follows: permanent dentition prevalence 15.2% (95 CI, 13.0%-17.4%); primary dentition prevalence 22.7% (95 CI, 17.3%-28.7%); 12-year-olds prevalence 18.1% (95 CI, 15.3%-21.0%); incidence rate, 2.82 (95 CI, 2.28%-3.42%) per 100 person-years; PR, 1.43 (95 CI, 1.34%-1.52%). Differences between WHO Regions were found. This study shows that more than one billion living people have had TDI. TDI is a neglected condition which could rank fifth if it was included in the list of the world's most frequent acute/chronic diseases and injuries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) and psychosocial factors in adolescents and to identify psychological profiles associated with TDI. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 531 students aged 13-16 years. Data were collected through oral examination and a structured interview with the adolescents, in conjunction with a questionnaire answered by their mothers. Associations between TDI and independent variables were analysed using a model-based approach, while an exploratory data analysis was applied to identify homogenous clusters of adolescents in relation to their sense of coherence (SoC), perception of parental support and their mothers' SoC. These clusters were examined further for associations with TDI and psychosocial variables. RESULTS The prevalence of TDI was 15.8%. Adolescents with high TDI prevalence were males, nonfirstborns, or those frequently engaging in physical activity. In addition, both their own SoC and that of their mother were low and they reported low parental support. They were also prone to complaining about the behaviour of their peer group. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) demonstrated three homogenous clusters. The cluster with the highest scores for all psychological variables included adolescents with low TDI prevalence, low paternal punishment, spacious home environment, high Family Affluence Scale (FAS) score, good school grades, few complaints about schoolmates and higher maternal education. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial factors appear to influence an adolescent's risk of TDI. High parental support, high own and maternal SoC and a higher socioeconomic status (SES) are typical of adolescents with low TDI experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Contextual socio-economic factors have been associated with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). However, evidence concerning the role of income inequality on TDIs in children is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between contextual income inequality over a 10-year period and TDIs in Brazilian children. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study population comprised a representative sample of 5027 children aged 12 years who participated in the Brazilian oral health survey in 2010. City-level Gini Index was used to measure contextual income inequality in the years 2000 and 2010, as well as the variation in income inequality between 2000 and 2010. Covariates were gender, ethnicity, family income, number of people per room and incisal overjet. Clinical examinations were used to assess TDIs. Multivariable multilevel ordered multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate cumulative Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals between income inequality and TDIs. RESULTS The prevalence of children who had one tooth with TDI and two or more teeth with TDIs was 15.2% and 6.4%, respectively. The maxillary central and left lateral incisors were the teeth most affected by TDIs. Gini coefficient reduction between the years 2000 and 2010 decreased the odds of TDIs even after adjustment for demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and incisal overjet. The likelihood of more TDIs decreased 21% for each 0.05 unit decrease in the Gini coefficient between the years 2000 and 2010. Boys, brown skin colour, overcrowding and incisal overjet greater than 5 mm remained statistically associated with TDIs in the final model. CONCLUSIONS The decrease in income inequality over a 10-year period was inversely associated with TDIs among Brazilian children aged 12 years.

Abstract
Background Traumatic injuries are common dental problems in pediatric dentistry that may influence the children's quality of life. Aim the aim of this study is to assess the impact of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Egyptian schoolchildren aged 11-14 years. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out involving a sample of 11700 schoolchildren from public and private schools of Mansoura city, Egypt. OHRQoL was assessed using Child Perceptions Questionnaire. Clinical examination included the presence and type of TDI, malocclusion status, and dental caries in anterior teeth (decayed, missing, and filled teeth). Results The prevalence of TDI was 13.6%. Untreated TDI was more likely to have a negative impact on the children's daily living regarding pain, functional, emotional, and social aspect than treated injuries and control children. Pearson's correlation test indicated significant association between trauma and malocclusion and dental caries. Conclusion Untreated dental injury has a negative impact on quality of life regarding social, functional, and emotional aspects. However, treated injured teeth appear to improve social and emotional aspects of the OHRQoL of school children, whereas functional limitations may continue because of the pulpal and periodontal effects of the injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple risk factors have been identified for traumatic dental injuries, including crown fractures, in various age groups and various populations. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, risk factors and family related factors for crown trauma among 8 to 16 year-old children in a suburban population, Nigeria. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of a data of 2107 children collected through a school-based survey. Study participants were 8 to 16 year-old resident in suburban Nigeria. The independent variables for the study were age, sex, socioeconomic status, and birth rank, family size and parenting status (one parent, step parent, both parents, and guardians). Details were collected using an interviewer administered questionnaire. Intraoral examination was conducted to identify presence of crown fracture. The independent variables associated with and predictors of crown trauma were determinedusing chi-square and logistic regression analysis respectively. RESULTS Only 167 (7.9 %) of the 2107 study participants had crown trauma. The teeth level prevalence of crown trauma was 0.33 %. Children with middle socioeconomic status had reduced odds of having crown trauma when compared with children with low socioeconomic status (AOR 0.50; CI 0.32-0.80). The odds of having crown traumawas more than doubled in males when compared with females (AOR 2.41; CI 1.72-3.39) and almost doubled in children living with single parents when compared with children living with both parents (AOR 1.94; CI 1.29-3.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of crown traumawas low in this study population. Being a female and having lowsocioeconomic status significantly reduced the risk factors for crown traumawhile living with single parents increased risk for crown trauma.

Abstract
Objective: To study the prevalence of anterior dental trauma and its associated factors among 800 preschool children aged 3 to 5 years in Jaipur City, Rajasthan, India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among children aged 3-5 years, who were enrolled in various private and public schools in Jaipur. Parents were asked to fill a form addressing socio-demographic data and clinical examinations were performed by a single dentist. Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) were assessed and recorded based on Andreasen's classification. Associated factors such as sex, socioeconomic status (SES), and the type of injury were also analyzed. The data were analyzed statistically using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (version 20). Results: An overall 10.2% prevalence of TDI was observed among the study population. TDI were reported to be more among male children (11.87%) compared to female children (8.14%). Enamel fractures (69%) were the most prevalent type of anterior dental trauma. Upper central incisors were the most frequently affected. The SES of the parents had little influence on the prevalence of TDI. Conclusions: The prevalence rate of dental trauma among children aged 3-5 years was 10.2%. Associated factors, such as SES, were observed to be not significantly correlated to dental trauma among the studied preschoolers.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes and factors associated with after-hours dental trauma. METHODS Study sample consisted of 1762 permanent teeth injuries in children, gender and age matched with office-hours injuries. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected from 4 university dental trauma centers. RESULTS During median follow-up time of 4.3 years, complications have occurred in 14.5% of injured teeth. Age, type, and degree of tissue injury and after-hours time of injury were significantly associated with complications. Unfavorable outcomes were 34% more likely in the after-hours group compared with office-hours. Urgent treatment was significantly delayed in after-hours group with a delay of more than 3 hours in 90.5% versus 38.9% in the office-hours group. Multivariate regression model showed that after-hours time of injury was significant predictor of complications. CONCLUSION Delayed urgent treatment was one of the main factors associated with unfavorable outcome of after-hours injuries.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to identify individual risk factors for traumatic dental injuries (TDI) among Swedish children aged 0-17 years. The studied risk factors were temperamental reactivity of the child, family structure, parent's country of birth, and the socioeconomic status of the family represented by parental education and occupation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study included 2363 children in four different age cohorts at 12 public dental service clinics in Sweden, representing different types of demographic areas, both rural and urban. Data were collected from parents and children through an interview and questionnaires. RESULTS The more social and active children in the two older age cohorts showed less occasions of TDI. Having one parent/guardian protected the child from dental injury just as well as two parents/guardians. Parents born outside of the Nordic countries showed children with less TDI. Low parental education was related to more occasions of TDI among the children. CONCLUSIONS This study has increased the knowledge on certain individual risk factors for TDI. To prevent dental injuries, information could be given to families and children at risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Observational studies which investigated the association between overweight/obesity and traumatic dental injuries (TDI) reported contrasting results. Thus, this meta-analysis was designed to investigate such an association with the highest possible levels of internal and external validities. MATERIAL AND METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed through PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Google scholar to ensure generalizability. Eligible studies reported clear case and control definitions, exposure assessment. Where possible, odds ratio (OR) adjusted for covariates was extracted. Study quality was assessed through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Only fair-to-good quality studies with NOS scores ≥4 were selected. The method to assess the pooled OR was based on the level of between-study heterogeneity, estimated through the Cochran's Q. Reliability of the pooled OR was improved by controlling for publication bias, sensitivity analysis to study inclusion, and subgroup analyses according to tooth type (permanent vs primary teeth) and country where the study was performed (Brazilian studies vs studies from other countries). RESULTS Seventeen studies were selected from America, Asia, and Europe, their NOS scores ranged between 4 and 8. Overall, there were almost 28,000 patients, 7400 of them with TDI. The level of publication bias was minimal, and no adjustment was necessary. Between-study heterogeneity was high, and the random-effects method was used to assess the pooled OR, which resulted 1.30 (95% confidence interval, 1.11-1.53; P < 0.05). Sensitivity and subgroup analyses corroborated this estimate. CONCLUSION The choice to increase internal and external validity levels decreased the precision of the pooled OR (i.e., confidence intervals were relatively wide). The statistically significant overweight/obesity-TDI association, together with the so-called counterfactual condition (i.e., TDI prevalence was higher among overweight/obese children than among lean children), suggests that causal association between these two conditions is plausible.

Abstract
Obesity and poverty are independent risk factors in trauma-related morbidity in children as well as adolescents. The main objective of this study was to investigate the association between traumatic dental injury, obesity, and socioeconomic status in 6- and 13-year-old schoolchildren in Davangere city, Karnataka, India. Data were obtained from 1,550 schoolchildren. Dental trauma was classified according to Andreasen's criteria. The medical evaluation assessed the Body Mass Index. Overjet was considered a risk factor when it presented values higher than 3 mm, whereas lip coverage was classified as adequate or inadequate. With appropriate sample weighting, relationships between traumatic dental injury and other variables were assessed using the chi-squared test and multivariable logistic regression. Overall prevalence of dental injuries was 10.52% (3.6% in 6-year-olds and 17.2% in 13-year-olds). Boys experienced more injuries than girls, 11.03% and 9.97%, respectively (p>.05). There was a statistically significant difference between traumatic dental injury and overjet (95% confidence interval [CI] [2.06, 4.78], p < 001) and between traumatic dental injury and inadequate lip coverage (95% CI [1.23, 4.65], p < .001). When adjusted for covariates, the logistic regression model showed that there was a significant association between obese children (p < .05) and dental trauma prevalence. Children from low socioeconomic status had an odds ratio 2.33 (95% CI [1.05, 3.97]) times higher likelihood of having dental trauma than children from medium and upper socioeconomic status. To conclude the results of this study support an association between traumatic dental injuries, obesity, and poverty.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the association of untreated traumatic dental injuries (TDI) with individual-, sociodemographic- and school-related factors among 12-year-old schoolchildren in Midwest Brazil. This cross-sectional study was carried out in 2010 in the city of Goiania, Brazil. A random sample of 2075 schoolchildren was examined and interviewed. Untreated TDI in the permanent incisors was assessed using the methodology of the Brazilian National Oral Health Survey. Rao-Scott test and multinomial logistic regression were used to analyze the associations between independent variables and three categories of TDI, using a hierarchical method. Independent variables were children’s sex, self rated color/race and size of incisal overjet, their mother’s level of schooling, and the schools’ type and geographic location. The prevalence of trauma was 17.3% (CI 95% = 15.2–19.4); enamel fractures were the most common TDI (13.1%). In the adjusted model, a higher chance of having two or more teeth with TDI was found among boys, those whose mothers had lowest level of schooling, and those attending schools located in health districts with lower socioeconomic indicators. It was concluded that the prevalence of TDI was low and that it was associated with individual factors as well as the school environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traumatic dental injury (TDI) is an important public dental health problem among schoolchildren. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between TDIs, obesity, and other possible associated factors like gender, overjet, lip coverage, parents' education level and family income among 12-year old Jordanian schoolchildren. METHODS A cross-sectional population-based study examined a total of 1015 schoolchildren attending 34 schools randomly selected from urban and rural areas of Amman-the capital city of Jordan. The epidemiological classification adopted by WHO and modified by Andreasen et al. was used to classify TDIs. Obesity was defined according to the international cut-off points of body mass index for boys and girls between 2 and 20 years old. RESULTS The prevalence of TDIs was 16.3%. Enamel fracture was the most common type of TDIs (65%). Neither parents' education level nor family income had a significant effect on TDI occurrence (P > 0.05). Results of multiple logistic regression showed that TDIs were significantly more prevalent among males (OR = 1.42, CI; 1.01-2.01, P < 0.05), and children with inadequate lip coverage (OR = 1.95, CI; 1.35-2.81, P < 0.05). The relationship between TDIs and obesity was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Being a male with inadequate lip coverage was associated with higher probability of having a TDI. Obesity had no significant effect on the occurrence of TDIs.

Abstract
AIM To systematically review epidemiological articles assessing traumatic dental injuries (TDI) rates according to the physical activity habits and nutritional status. METHODS A search was conducted using PubMed, ISI, Scopus, SciELO, LILACS, and gray literature in Brazilian Theses Databank. We searched for dental trauma, traumatic dental injuries, tooth injuries, tooth fractures, physical activity, motor activity, exercise, sedentary lifestyle, sports, obesity, body mass index (BMI), overweight, and fatness. Databases were searched in duplicate from their earliest records until 2012. Additional studies were identified by searching bibliographies of the articles. Two reviewers performed data extraction and analyzed study procedural quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. PRISMA guidelines for reporting systematic reviews were followed. RESULTS We found 1159 articles, of whom 14 reports involving 13 studies were selected. One article was a birth cohort, one had a case-control design, and the others were cross-sectional. The quality of evidence varied across the studies and was high (9) in 3. Eleven of the studies included assessed influence of nutritional status: five show a positive association between dental trauma and overweight and six do not show any association. Regarding physical activity level, five studies assessed its effect on trauma occurrence: two detected that physical activity acts as a protective factor and two that physical active increases the risk of dental injuries, and one showed no differences in TDI occurrence. Physical activity estimated from questionnaires and BMI were the most frequently used measures, but methodological differences prevent the comparison of results. CONCLUSION The results suggest that no truly causal relationship exists between dental trauma and physical activity and nutritional status. Due to the relatively low level of evidence currently present, studies with more robust design, for example, prospective cohort should address this question, especially in view of the epidemic of obesity.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries to permanent incisors and explore the association between dental trauma and overweight in a sample of school children residing in an urban area. Our hypothesis was that there was a significant association between overweight and the presence of dental trauma among urban children. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional survey included 858 school children aged 10-12 years, of both sexes, randomly selected from 12 schools in urban Bangalore, India. The dental examination for traumatic injuries included only maxillary and mandibular permanent incisors. Anthropometric data were collected and Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated (weight in kg/(height in meters)(2). RESULTS The prevalence of Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI) was 15.04% and boys experienced more traumatic injuries than girls, but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). OW boys sustained more TDI than OW girls and the association between dental trauma and OW was statistically significant (p<0.05; OR=3.85; 95% CI=2.62-5.24). CONCLUSION Overweight could be considered a significant risk factor for the occurrence of TDI to permanent incisors in Indian school children residing in urban areas.

Abstract
This paper describes the methods of a multidisciplinary epidemiological survey conducted in schools in Pelotas, in the Southern Region of Brazil. This cross-sectional study evaluated a representative sample (n = 1,211) of eight to 12-year-old children attending public (15) and private (5) schools. Questionnaires were applied to parents to obtain information about socioeconomic and sociocultural characteristics. Children were interviewed to provide information on demographic characteristics, oral health behavior and physical activity habits. Oral health examinations were performed on the children and anthropometric data was collected to assess nutritional status. School principals responded a questionnaire about the social and physical environment of the school. A total of 1,744 children were eligible for the study; a response rate of 69.4% was achieved, with no significant differences between schools. The method used allowed investigators to obtain data on several health outcomes as well as on possible risk factors. This strategy optimizes the use of financial resources for research and promotes interprofessional collaboration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental trauma is common especially in children and young adults. One group of dento-alveolar injuries is classified as luxation. This group includes a subgroup of severe injuries where the tooth is displaced from its original position. These injuries are classified further by the direction in which the tooth has been displaced, namely: intrusion, extrusion and lateral luxation. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of a range of interventions for treating displaced luxated permanent front teeth. SEARCH METHODS Search strategies were developed for MEDLINE via OVID and revised appropriately for the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register (to 20 August 2012), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2012, Issue 8), MEDLINE via OVID (1966 to August 2012), EMBASE via Elsevier (1974 to August 2012), and LILACS via BIREME (1982 to August 2012). Dissertations, Theses and Abstracts were searched as were reference lists from articles. There were no language restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials of treatment interventions for displaced luxated permanent front teeth. Included trials had to have a minimum follow-up period of 12 months. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently and in duplicate assessed the eligibility of all reports identified in the searches. Authors were contacted for additional information where required. MAIN RESULTS No randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials were found. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We found no randomised or quasi-randomised trials of interventions to treat displaced luxated permanent front teeth. Current clinical guidelines are based on available information from case series studies and expert opinions. Randomised controlled trials in this area of dental trauma are required to robustly identify the benefits of different treatment strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are recognized as an important dental public health issue among children. The West Bank, a part of the Palestinian Authority, is in immediate neighborhood to Israel. There are inadequate epidemiologic data among the Palestinian people, on dental health issues. AIM To determine the occurrence of TDI to permanent teeth among sixth grade Palestinian schoolchildren living in four large towns of the West Bank and to investigate associations with anatomic and demographic factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eight hundred and four children were sampled and examined in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jericho. Data collection included clinical examinations in schools and questionnaires for demographic and socio-economic background. RESULTS The prevalence of traumatic dental injuries was 17.7%. Enamel fractures and injuries involving dentine accounted for 41% and 42.5% of all injuries, respectively. The most affected teeth (89%) were upper central incisors. Only 5% of the injured teeth were treated. Results of multiple logistic regression confirmed that TDI were significantly (P < 0.001) more prevalent among boys, children presenting incisal overjet larger than 5 mm, and incompetent lip coverage. CONCLUSIONS The relative high prevalence and very low levels of treated TDI identified in this study suggested that both prevention and treatment of TDI in the West Bank were inadequate.

Abstract
O aumento dos níveis de violência, do número de acidentes de trânsito e uma maior participação das crianças em atividades esportivas contribuem para transformar o traumatismo dental em um problema de saúde pública emergente. Todavia, ainda há carência de dados que mostrem o comportamento deste agravo no Brasil. O objetivo desse estudo foi conhecer a prevalência de traumatismo na dentição permanente e fatores associados em escolares de doze anos de idade de Palhoça (SC). Foi realizado um estudo transversal envolvendo uma amostra representativa dos escolares (n=405). Os critérios de classificação do traumatismo foram os mesmos usados no levantamento nacional do Reino Unido. Testou-se associação entre a prevalência e fatores clínicos e socioeconômicos por intermédio do qui-quadrado. A prevalência encontrada foi de 22,5%, sendo estatisticamente maior no sexo masculino. A maioria dos danos traumáticos foram de pequena magnitude, mas encontrou-se alta necessidade de tratamento entre os dentes passíveis de tratamento imediato. Pode-se concluir que foram altas a prevalência e a necessidade de tratamento do traumatismo dentário em Palhoça. A prevalência não mostrou associação com fatores socioeconômicos ou clínicos.
