Abstract
Alterations of nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis have been described in mood disorders. However, the analytical challenges associated with the direct measurement of NO have prompted the search for alternative biomarkers of NO synthesis. We investigated the published evidence of the association between these alternative biomarkers and mood disorders (depressive disorder or bipolar disorder). Electronic databases were searched from inception to the June 30, 2023. In 20 studies, there was a trend towards significantly higher asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in mood disorders vs. controls (p = 0.072), and non-significant differences in arginine (p = 0.29), citrulline (p = 0.35), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA; p = 0.23), and ornithine (p = 0.42). In subgroup analyses, the SMD for ADMA was significant in bipolar disorder (p < 0.001) and European studies (p = 0.02), the SMDs for SDMA (p = 0.001) and citrulline (p = 0.038) in European studies, and the SMD for ornithine in bipolar disorder (p = 0.007), Asian (p = 0.001) and American studies (p = 0.005), and patients treated with antidepressants (p = 0.029). The abnormal concentrations of ADMA, SDMA, citrulline, and ornithine in subgroups of mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, warrant further research to unravel their pathophysiological role and identify novel treatments in this group (The protocol was registered in PROSPERO: CRD42023445962).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The L-arginine metabolome is dysregulated in asthma, though it is not understood how longitudinal changes in L-arginine metabolism differ among asthma phenotypes and relate to disease outcomes. OBJECTIVES To determine the longitudinal associations between phenotypic characteristics with L-arginine metabolites and their relationships with asthma morbidity. METHODS This is a prospective cohort study of 321 patients with asthma followed semiannually for over 18 months with assessments of plasma L-arginine metabolites, asthma control, spirometry, quality of life and exacerbations. Metabolite concentrations and ratios were transformed using the natural logarithm. RESULTS There were many differences in L-arginine metabolism among asthma phenotypes in the adjusted models. Increasing body mass index was associated with increased asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and depleted L-citrulline. Latinx was associated with increased metabolism via arginase, with higher L-ornithine, proline and L-ornithine/L-citrulline levels, and was found to have higher L-arginine availability compared with white race. With respect to asthma outcomes, increasing L-citrulline was associated with improved asthma control and increasing L-arginine and L-arginine/ADMA were associated with improved quality of life. Increased variability in L-arginine, L-arginine/ADMA, L-arginine/L-ornithine and L-arginine availability index over 12 months were associated with increased exacerbations, OR 4.70 (95% CI 1.35 to 16.37), OR 8.69 (95% CI 1.98 to 38.08), OR 4.17 (95% CI 1.40 to 12.41) and OR 4.95 (95% CI 1.42 to 17.16), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that L-arginine metabolism is associated with multiple measures of asthma control and may explain, in part, the relationship between age, race/ethnicity and obesity with asthma outcomes.

Abstract
Patients with higher genetic West African ancestry (GWAA) have hypertension (HTN) that is more difficult to treat and have higher rates of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and differential responses to antihypertensive drugs than those with lower GWAA. The mechanisms underlying these disparities are poorly understood. Using data from 84 ancestry-informative markers in US participants from the Pharmacogenomic Evaluation of Antihypertensive Responses (PEAR) and PEAR-2 trials, the GWAA proportion was estimated. Using multivariable linear regression, the baseline levels of 886 metabolites were compared between PEAR participants with GWAA < 45% and those with GWAA ≥ 45% to identify differential metabolites and metabolic clusters. Metabolites with a false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.2 were used to create metabolic clusters, and a cluster analysis was conducted. Differential clusters were then tested for replication in PEAR-2 participants. We identified 353 differential metabolites (FDR < 0.2) between PEAR participants with GWAA < 45% (n = 383) and those with GWAA ≥ 45% (n = 250), which were used to create 24 metabolic clusters. Of those, 13 were significantly different between groups (Bonferroni p < 0.002). Four clusters, plasmalogen and lysoplasmalogen, sphingolipid metabolism and ceramide, cofactors and vitamins, and the urea cycle, were replicated in PEAR-2 (Bonferroni p < 0.0038) and have been previously linked to HTN and CVD. Our findings may give insights into the mechanisms underlying HTN racial disparities.

Abstract
l-Arginine is involved in many different biological processes and recent reports indicate that it could also play a crucial role in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Herein, we present an updated systematic overview of the current evidence on the functional contribution of L-Arginine in COVID-19, describing its actions on endothelial cells and the immune system and discussing its potential as a therapeutic tool, emerged from recent clinical experimentations.

Central systolic blood pressure relates inversely to nitric oxide synthesis in young black adults: the African-PREDICT study. J Hum Hypertens 2021; 35:985-993. Abstract
Lower nitric oxide (NO) bioavailabilty associates with hypertension in patients and elderly populations. With hypertension known to develop earlier in black populations, we compared both plasma and urinary NO-related markers and their associations with central systolic blood pressure (cSBP) and arterial stiffness in healthy young black and white adults. We included healthy black and white men and women (n = 1110; 20-30 years) and measured cSBP and pulse wave velocity (PWV), along with both plasma and urinary arginine, homoarginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), as well as urinary ornithine/citrulline, nitrite and nitrate. In addition, the urinary nitrate-to-nitrite ratio (UNOxR) was calculated. The black men and women had higher cSBP and higher plasma arginine and ADMA, but lower urinary nitrate and UNOxR (all p ≤ 0.003) than their white counterparts. In single and forward stepwise multiple regression analyses, we found an inverse association of cSBP (adj. R2 = 0.124; β = -0.134; p = 0.006) and plasma homoarginine in black men. Central SBP associated inversely with UNOxR in black women only (adj. R2 = 0.171; β = -0.130; p = 0.029). In the white women, cSBP associated positively with urinary ADMA (adj. R2 = 0.372; β = 0.162; p = 0.015). PWV associated inversely with plasma ADMA (adj. R2 = 0.253; β = -0.163; p = 0.024) in the white women only. The lower NO synthesis and the higher cSBP in our black cohort support the notion of a potential increased risk for future large artery stiffness and hypertension development in later life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some previous works have focused on dose-response relationship between cocoa consumption and blood pressure in Caucasians. As black subjects have lower nitric oxide bioavailability, the aim of this work was to determine the dose-effect relation between cocoa and blood pressure in black Africans. METHOD One hundred and thirty healthy black African males aged 18-30 were randomly assigned into four groups: three groups consuming 10 g, 5 g, or 2 g of cocoa powder daily for three weeks and one control group that did not consume cocoa. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured on day 1 (D1, before any subject consumed cocoa), D8, D15, and D22. Means of the parameters at each of the four visits and changes of the means were compared among the groups. RESULTS Significant decrease in SBP was noted in consumers of 10 g compared to controls in the 1st week, and compared to consumers of 2 g in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of follow-up. Means and changes of DBP were statistically similar among the four groups. CONCLUSION Among our cohort, decrease in SBP was significantly greater in the heavy cocoa consumer group (10 g) compared to the low consumer group (2 g), but there was no statistically significant difference when compared with the intermediate consumer group (5 g). The dose-response relationship between cocoa consumption and changes in SBP was not linear. No relationship was found between cocoa consumption and DBP.

Abstract
Background In Caucasians, regular consumption of cocoa induces a drop in arterial blood pressure via an increase in nitric oxide (NO) production. However, black individuals have a different NO biodisponibility compared to Caucasians. The aim of this study was to determine, in black Africans, the physiological variations in arterial blood pressure among cocoa consumers. Method In total, 49 male black African volunteers, aged between 18 and 30 years old, were randomized into two groups; those consuming 10 g of cocoa powder per day (1,680 mg of flavonoids per day) for 3 weeks (consumer group), and those not consuming cocoa (control group). Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressures (DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured in the morning on an empty stomach (fasting), on day (D) 1 (without cocoa), D8, D15, and D22. Data were collected by groups and by subgroups established according to the level of SBP, DBP, or HR on D1. The means and variations of the means (between D1 and the subsequent days) of the recorded parameters were calculated and compared between groups and between subgroups. Results On D8, the variations in SBP in the consumer group were significantly different from the control group (-3.72 ± 6.01 versus 0.57 ± 6.66 mmHg; p = 0.02). Between the control and consumer subgroups according to SBP, no statistical difference in the means or variations in SBP was noted. On D8 and D22, the variations in the SBP of consumers with SBP ≥ 110 mmHg on D1 were significantly different from those of other consumers (D8: -6.55 ± 5.96 versus -1.1 ± 4.93 mmHg; p = 0.01; D22: -6.63 ± 7.77 versus 0.35 ± 5.58 mmHg; p = 0.01). In the subgroups with a DBP < 75 mmHg on D1, the mean DBP of the consumers was significantly lower than that of the controls on D8 (65 ± 5 versus 69 ± 6 mmHg; p = 0.03). Conclusion In young black African men living in Côte d'Ivoire, regular consumption of cocoa resulted in a decrease in SBP and DBP. The decrease in SBP appeared to be greater the higher the baseline SBP was.

Abstract
Hypertension is common in black populations and is known to be associated with low nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. We compared plasma and urinary NO-related markers and plasma creatine kinase (CK) levels between young healthy black and white adults along with the associations of these markers with the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR), which is a surrogate marker of endothelial and kidney function. We included 1105 participants (20-30 years). We measured the uACR, plasma CK, plasma and urinary arginine, homoarginine, asymmetric (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), urinary ornithine/citrulline, nitrate and nitrite, and malondialdehyde (MDA). In addition, the urinary nitrate-to-nitrite ratio (UNOxR) was calculated and used as a measure of circulating NO bioavailability. The uACR was comparable between the groups, yet the black group had lower urinary nitrate (by -15%) and UNOxR values (by -18%) (both p ≤ 0.001), higher plasma (by +9.6%) and urinary (by +5.9%) arginine (both p ≤ 0.004), higher plasma (by +13%) and urinary (by +3.7%) ADMA (both p ≤ 0.033), and higher CK (by +9.5%) and MDA (by +19%) (both p < 0.001) compared with white adults. Plasma and urinary homoarginine were similar between the groups. In the multiple regression analysis, we confirmed the inverse associations of the uACR with both plasma (adj. R2 = 0.066; β = -0.209; p = 0.005) and urinary (adj. R2 = 0.066; β = -0.149; p = 0.010) homoarginine and with the UNOxR (adj. R2 = 0.060; β = -0.122; p = 0.031) in the black group only. The overall less favorable NO profile and higher CK and MDA levels in the black cohort along with the adverse associations with the uACR may reflect the vulnerability of this cohort to the early development of hypertension.

Abstract
Nitric oxide plays an important role in maintaining endothelial function, while increased oxidative stress may lead to nitric oxide inactivation and cardiovascular disease. If nitric oxide biosynthesis/bioavailability is already suppressed early in life, it may potentially predispose an individual to the early development of cardiovascular disease. We therefore aimed to identify differences in nitric oxide-related markers (urinary nitrate, nitrite and the nitrate-to-nitrite ratio (UNOxR)) between young black and white individuals, and whether these markers are associated with blood pressure and carotid intima media thickness. We included black and white healthy boys (n = 80; aged 6-8 years) and men (n = 510; 20-30 years) and measured blood pressure and carotid intima media thickness, along with urinary biochemical markers including nitrate and nitrite. The black boys and men had lower nitrate and UNOxR (all p ≤ 0.003) than their white counterparts. In single and multiple regression analyses, we found an inverse association of diastolic blood pressure in the black boys (adj. R2 = 0.27; β = -0.32; p = 0.030), and systolic blood pressure in black men (adj. R2 = 0.07; β = -0.13; p = 0.036) with nitrate. Carotid intima media thickness associated inversely with UNOxR in the black men (adj. R2 = 0.02; β = -0.14; p = 0.023), but not in the boys. Lower urinary nitrate in black boys and young men was associated negatively with blood pressure, suggesting that potentially lower nitric oxide bioavailability in young black individuals may contribute to hypertension development in later life.

Abstract
Proteinic arginine dimethylation (PADiMe) is a major post-translational modification. Proteolysis of asymmetric and symmetric PADiMe products releases asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), respectively, two endogenous atherogenic substances. SDMA, ADMA, and its major metabolite dimethylamine (DMA) are eliminated by the kidney. The urinary concentrations of DMA+ADMA, SDMA, and DMA+ADMA+SDMA are useful measures of the whole-body asymmetric and symmetric PADiMe, respectively. Urinary (DMA+ADMA)/SDMA is an index of the asymmetric to symmetric PADiMe balance. In two bi-ethnic studies, the ASOS (39 black boys, 41 white boys) and the African-PREDICT (292 black young men, 281 white young men) studies, we investigated whether ethnicity is a major determinant of PADiMe, and whether PADiMe is associated with blood pressure and ethnicity-dependent growth and inflammatory factors, including HDL. DMA, ADMA, and SDMA were measured in spot urine samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and their excretion was corrected for creatinine excretion. In black boys, creatinine-corrected DMA, DMA+ADMA, and DMA+ADMA+SDMA concentrations were lower by 11.7%, 9.5%, and 7.6% (all p < 0.05), respectively, compared to the white boys, and 3.4%, 2.0%, and 1.8% lower (all p < 0.05), respectively, in black compared to white men. (DMA+ADMA)/SDMA did not differ between black boys and black men, but was higher in white boys compared to white men. ADMA did not differ between black and white boys, or between black and white men. Creatinine-corrected SDMA excretion was lower in black boys compared to white boys (by 8%) and to white men (by 3.1%). None of the PADiMe indices were associated with blood pressure in either study. IGF-binding protein 3 correlated inversely with all PADiMe indices in the black men only. Our study showed that asymmetric proteinic arginine dimethylation is higher in white boys than in black boys, and that this difference disappears in adulthood. ADMA metabolism and SDMA excretion were lower in the black subjects compared to the white subjects, suggesting ethnicity-dependent hepatic and renal elimination of ADMA and SDMA in the childhood. The results of our study may have clinical relevance beyond atherosclerosis, such as in growth and inflammation, which have not been sufficiently addressed thus far.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hypertension occurs frequently among black populations around the world. In the United States (US) health system, interventions since the 1960s resulted in improvements in hypertension awareness, management and control among African Americans. This is in stark contrast to current health systems in African countries. To objectively assess the current situation in South Africa, we compared the cardiovascular health status of African Americans from 1960 to 1980 to black South Africans from recent years, as there is potential to implement best practices from the US. We also reviewed the recent cardiovascular health changes of a South African population over 10 years. METHODS Men and women were included from three studies performed in the United States (Evans County Heart Study; Charleston Heart Study; NHANES I and II) and one in South Africa (PURE, North West Province). We compared blood pressure (BP), BMI, cholesterol, diabetes and smoking status. RESULTS Age-adjusted SBP and DBP of South African men were lower than US studies conducted from 1960 to 1971 (Evans County; Charleston; NHANES I; all P < 0.001) but similar to NHANES II (P = 0.987) conducted in 1976. South African women had lower SBP than all four of the US studies (all P < 0.001); their DBP was lower than Evans County and Charleston studies, but similar to NHANES I and II. Reviewing South African data, BMI increased steeply over 10 years in women (P < 0.001) but not men (P = 0.451). CONCLUSION Blood pressure of South Africans is lower than African Americans from the 1960s, but comparable for 1970s to 1980s. With obesity of South African women rising sharply, escalating figures for hypertension and diabetes are anticipated.

Abstract
We hypothesized that human variation in the activity of the ATP regenerating enzyme creatine kinase (CK) activity affects hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk. CK is tightly bound close to ATP-utilizing enzymes including Ca2+-ATPase, myosin ATPase, and Na+/K+-ATPase, where it rapidly regenerates ATP from ADP, H+, and phosphocreatine. Thus, relatively high CK was thought to enhance ATP-demanding processes including resistance artery contractility and sodium retention, and reduce ADP-dependent functions. In a series of studies of our group and others, CK was linked to hypertension and bleeding risk. Plasma CK after rest, used as a surrogate measure for tissue CK, was associated with high blood pressure and failure of antihypertensive therapy in case-control and population studies. Importantly, high tissue CK preceded hypertension in animal models and in humans, and human vascular tissue CK gene expression was strongly associated with clinical blood pressure. In line with this, CK inhibition substantially reduced the contractility of human resistance arteries ex vivo. We also presented evidence that plasma CK reduced ADP-dependent platelet aggregation. In subsequent intervention studies, the oral competitive CK inhibitor beta-guanidinopropionic acid (GPA) reduced blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), and a 1-week trial of sub-therapeutic dose GPA in healthy men was uneventful. Thus, based on theoretical concepts, evidence was gathered in laboratory, case-control, and population studies that high CK is associated with hypertension and with bleeding risk, potentially leading to a new mode of cardiovascular risk reduction with CK inhibition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased stiffness of large arteries is an important determinant of cardiovascular disease risk. Higher values of arterial stiffness measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) have been measured in adult African-Americans compared with whites. Studies assessing ethnic differences in cf-PWV among children and adolescents are scarce. This study sought to evaluate the association between ethnicity and cf-PWV in Brazilian children and adolescents. METHODS Seven hundred and seventy-one children and adolescents (211 blacks and 560 nonblacks, 11.3 ± 2.7 years) were included. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by cf-PWV. The ethnic classification was obtained by a single interviewer according to general phenotypes such as skin color, hair shape and facial traces. RESULTS Blood pressure was similar in blacks and nonblacks across all pubertal stages. Differently, cf-PWV was higher in blacks than nonblacks pubescent (5.9 ± 0.7 vs. 5.6 ± 0.8 m/s, P = 0.001) and postpubescent (6.1 ± 0.7 vs. 5.7 ± 0.7 m/s, P = 0.042), whereas no difference was detected between blacks and nonblacks prepubescent. These analyses were adjusted for sex, age, height, BMI, SBP and heart rate. CONCLUSION Our study showed that higher cf-PWV values in blacks appear in adolescence and are independent of blood pressure values. Therefore, our data suggest adolescence as the key phase for the appearance of the vascular profile found in adults black individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a catabolic product of arginine-methylated proteins and is an emerging biomarker for kidney function. A limited number of studies in selected populations have shown good correlation between SDMA and a few known markers of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, a comprehensive comparison of SDMA with all existing serum endogenous markers in a population with varied kidney function and against measured GFR is lacking. The objective of this study was to compare the correlations of SDMA, creatinine, cystatin C and their eGFR equations against GFR measured by iothalamate clearance in an adult population with varied kidney function. DESIGN & METHODS Left-over serum and plasma specimens were collected from 40 adults with normal and reduced kidney function. GFR was measured using a radioactive iothalamate procedure. Creatinine and cystatin C were measured on Roche Cobas 8000. SDMA was measured by a published liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. RESULTS SDMA correlated highly with measured GFR (r=-0.84), which was better than creatinine (r=-0.70) but equivalent to cystatin C (r=-0.86) and the eGFR equations [MDRD and CKD-EPI (separate and combined)]. CONCLUSIONS SDMA is a strong marker of kidney function and further studies are needed to establish an eGFR formula that includes it for widespread clinical use.

Abstract
Inadequate substrate availability and increased nitric oxide synthase inhibitor levels attenuate nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, whereas increased vascular oxidative stress may lead to inactivation of NO. We compared markers of NO synthesis capacity and oxidative stress in a bi-ethnic male population. Inter-relationships of ambulatory blood pressure and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio with NO synthesis capacity and oxidative stress markers were investigated. NO synthesis capacity markers (L-arginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA)) and oxidative stress markers (serum peroxides, total glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase) were measured. Black men displayed higher blood pressure and albumin-to-creatinine ratio (all p < 0.001), while NO synthesis capacity was more favorable (higher L-arginine and lower ADMA (p ≤ 0.003)). Antioxidant enzyme activities were similar except for the redox status markers (GR activity and GR/GPx ratio), which were upregulated in black men (p < 0.001). In black men, ADMA was inversely related to GPx activity (R (2) = 0.15; β = -0.20; p = 0.050) and GPx/SOD ratio (R (2) = 0.24; β = -0.37; p < 0.001), but none of these markers related to blood pressure or albumin-to-creatinine ratio. In white men, albumin-to-creatinine ratio was positively associated with ADMA (R (2) = 0.18; β = 0.39; p < 0.001) while ADMA was inversely related to GR activity (R (2) = 0.26; β = -0.29; p = 0.002) and GR/GPx ratio (R (2) = 0.25; β = -0.28; p = 0.003). Black men with elevated blood pressure and albumin-to-creatinine ratio displayed a favorable NO synthesis capacity. This may be counteracted by increased inactivation of NO, although it was not linked to vascular or renal phenotypes. In white men, reduced NO synthesis capacity may lower NO bio-availability, thereby influencing the albumin-to-creatinine ratio.

Nitric oxide synthesis capacity, ambulatory blood pressure and end organ damage in a black and white population: the SABPA study. Amino Acids 2015; 48:801-810. Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) synthesis capacity is determined by the availability of substrate(s) such as L-arginine and the influence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). These factors may be important in black South Africans with a very high prevalence of hypertension. We compared ambulatory blood pressure (BP), markers of end organ damage and NO synthesis capacity markers [L-arginine, L-homoarginine, L-citrulline, L-arginine:ADMA, ADMA, SDMA and dimethylarginine (DMA)], between black and white teachers (n = 390). Associations of nighttime BP and markers of end organ damage with NO synthesis capacity markers were also investigated. Although black men and women had higher BP and albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) (all p < 0.001), they also had higher L-arginine, L-homoarginine, L-arginine:ADMA and lower SDMA and DMA levels (all p < 0.05). Only in white men ADMA concentrations associated positively with nighttime systolic blood pressure (R (2) = 0.20, β = 0.26, p = 0.009), nighttime diastolic blood pressure (R (2) = 0.23, β = 0.27, p = 0.007), carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) (R (2) = 0.36, β = 0.22, p = 0.008) and ACR (R (2) = 0.14, β = 0.32, p = 0.001). Our findings suggest that despite an adverse cardiovascular profile in blacks, their NO synthesis capacity profile seems favourable, and that other factors, such as NO inactivation, may prove to be more important.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinicians are encouraged to take an individualized approach when treating hypertension in patients of African ancestry, but little is known about why the individual patient may respond well to calcium blockers and diuretics, but generally has an attenuated response to drugs inhibiting the renin-angiotensin system and to β-adrenergic blockers. Therefore, we systematically reviewed the factors associated with the differential drug response of patients of African ancestry to antihypertensive drug therapy. METHODS Using the methodology of the systematic reviews narrative synthesis approach, we sought for published or unpublished studies that could explain the differential clinical efficacy of antihypertensive drugs in patients of African ancestry. PUBMED, EMBASE, LILACS, African Index Medicus and the Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency databases were searched without language restriction from their inception through June 2012. RESULTS We retrieved 3,763 papers, and included 72 reports that mainly considered the 4 major classes of antihypertensive drugs, calcium blockers, diuretics, drugs that interfere with the renin-angiotensin system and β-adrenergic blockers. Pharmacokinetics, plasma renin and genetic polymorphisms did not well predict the response of patients of African ancestry to antihypertensive drugs. An emerging view that low nitric oxide and high creatine kinase may explain individual responses to antihypertensive drugs unites previous observations, but currently clinical data are very limited. CONCLUSION Available data are inconclusive regarding why patients of African ancestry display the typical response to antihypertensive drugs. In lieu of biochemical or pharmacogenomic parameters, self-defined African ancestry seems the best available predictor of individual responses to antihypertensive drugs.
