Stabilization of 4H hexagonal phase in gold nanoribbons

Sub-1 nm Materials Chemistry: Challenges and Prospects

Subnanometer materials (SNMs) refer to nanomaterials with a feature size close to 1 nm, similar to the diameter of a single polymer, DNA strand, and a single cluster/unit cell. The growth and assembly of subnanometer building blocks can be controlled by interactions at atomic levels, representing the limit for the precise manipulation of materials. The size, geometry, and flexibility of 1D SNMs inorganic backbones are similar to the polymer chains, bringing excellent gelability, adhesiveness, and processability different from inorganic nanocrystals. The ultrahigh surface atom ratio of SNMs results in significantly increased surface energy, leading to significant rearrangement of surface atoms. Unconventional phases, immiscible metal alloys, and high entropy materials with few atomic layers can be stabilized, and the spontaneous twisting of SNMs may induce the intrinsic structural chirality. Electron delocalization may also emerge at the subnanoscale, giving rise to the significantly enhanced catalytic activity. In this perspective, we summarized recent progress on SNMs, including their synthesis, polymer-like properties, metastable phases, structural chirality, and catalytic properties, toward energy conversion. As a critical size region in nanoscience, the development of functional SNMs may fuse the boundary of inorganic materials and polymers and conduce to the precise manufacturing of materials at atomic levels.

1T'-transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers stabilized on 4H-Au nanowires for ultrasensitive SERS detection

Unconventional 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have aroused tremendous research interest due to their unique phase-dependent physicochemical properties and applications. However, due to the metastable nature of 1T'-TMDs, the controlled synthesis of 1T'-TMD monolayers (MLs) with high phase purity and stability still remains a challenge. Here we report that 4H-Au nanowires (NWs), when used as templates, can induce the quasi-epitaxial growth of high-phase-purity and stable 1T'-TMD MLs, including WS2, WSe2, MoS2 and MoSe2, via a facile and rapid wet-chemical method. The as-synthesized 4H-Au@1T'-TMD core-shell NWs can be used for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. For instance, the 4H-Au@1T'-WS2 NWs have achieved attomole-level SERS detections of Rhodamine 6G and a variety of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike proteins. This work provides insights into the preparation of high-phase-purity and stable 1T'-TMD MLs on metal substrates or templates, showing great potential in various promising applications.

Regulating the Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Performance with Controllable Distribution of Unconventional Phase Copper on Alloy Nanostructures

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is emerging as a promising strategy for nitrate removal and ammonia (NH3) production using renewable electricity. Although great progresses have been achieved, the crystal phase effect of electrocatalysts on NO3RR remains rarely explored. Here, the epitaxial growth of unconventional 2H Cu on hexagonal close-packed (hcp) IrNi template, resulting in the formation of three IrNiCu@Cu nanostructures, is reported. IrNiCu@Cu-20 shows superior catalytic performance, with NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 86% at -0.1 (vs reversible hydrogen electrode [RHE]) and NH3 yield rate of 687.3 mmol gCu -1 h-1, far better than common face-centered cubic Cu. In sharp contrast, IrNiCu@Cu-30 and IrNiCu@Cu-50 covered by hcp Cu shell display high selectivity toward nitrite (NO2 -), with NO2 - FE above 60% at 0.1 (vs RHE). Theoretical calculations have demonstrated that the IrNiCu@Cu-20 has the optimal electronic structures for NO3RR due to the highest d-band center and strongest reaction trend with the lowest energy barriers. The high electroactivity of IrNiCu@Cu-20 originates from the abundant low coordination of Cu sites on the surface, which guarantees the fast electron transfer to accelerate the intermediate conversions. This work provides a feasible tactic to regulate the product distribution of NO3RR by crystal phase engineering of electrocatalysts.

Perspectives on phase engineering of nanomaterials

This perspective highlights the representative progress of phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) with an emphasis on noble metals and transition metal dichalcogenides, and proposes future directions in this emerging field.

Tailor-Made Gold Nanomaterials for Applications in Soft Bioelectronics and Optoelectronics

In modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, gold nanomaterials are indispensable building blocks that have demonstrated a plethora of applications in catalysis, biology, bioelectronics, and optoelectronics. Gold nanomaterials possess many appealing material properties, such as facile control over their size/shape and surface functionality, intrinsic chemical inertness yet with high biocompatibility, adjustable localized surface plasmon resonances, tunable conductivity, wide electrochemical window, etc. Such material attributes have been recently utilized for designing and fabricating soft bioelectronics and optoelectronics. This motivates to give a comprehensive overview of this burgeoning field. The discussion of representative tailor-made gold nanomaterials, including gold nanocrystals, ultrathin gold nanowires, vertically aligned gold nanowires, hard template-assisted gold nanowires/gold nanotubes, bimetallic/trimetallic gold nanowires, gold nanomeshes, and gold nanosheets, is begun. This is followed by the description of various fabrication methodologies for state-of-the-art applications such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, electrochemical sensors, electrophysiological devices, energy-storage devices, energy-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, and others. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Crystal-Phase-Selective Etching of Heterophase Au Nanostructures

Selective oxidative etching is one of the most effective ways to prepare hollow nanostructures and nanocrystals with specific exposed facets. The mechanism of selective etching in noble metal nanostructures mainly relies on the different reactivity of metal components and the distinct surface energy of multimetallic nanostructures. Recently, phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) offers new opportunities for the preparation of unique heterostructures, including heterophase nanostructures. However, the synthesis of hollow multimetallic nanostructures based on crystal-phase-selective etching has been rarely studied. Here, a crystal-phase-selective etching method is reported to selectively etch the unconventional 4H and 2H phases in the heterophase Au nanostructures. Due to the coating of Pt-based alloy and the crystal-phase-selective etching of 4H-Au in 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) Au nanowires, the well-defined ladder-like Au@PtAg nanoframes are prepared. In addition, the 2H-Au in the fcc-2H-fcc Au nanorods and 2H/fcc Au nanosheets can also be selectively etched using the same method. As a proof-of-concept application, the ladder-like Au@PtAg nanoframes are used for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, showing excellent performance that is comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Multicolor Inks of Black Phosphorus for Midwave-Infrared Optoelectronics

Black phosphorus (bP) based ink with a bulk bandgap of 0.33 eV (λ = 3.7 µm) has recently been shown to be promising for large-area, high performance mid-wave infrared (MWIR) optoelectronics. However, the development of multicolor bP inks expanding across the MWIR wavelength range has been challenging. Here a multicolor ink process based on bP with spectral emission tuned from 0.28 eV (λ = 4.4 µm) to 0.8 eV (λ = 1.5 µm) is demonstrated. Specifically, through the reduction of bP particle size distribution (i.e., lateral dimension and thickness), the optical bandgap systematically blueshifts, reaching up to 0.8 eV. Conversely, alloying bP with arsenic (bP1- xAsx) induces a redshift in the bandgap to 0.28 eV. The ink processed films are passivated with an infrared-transparent epoxy for stable infrared emission in ambient air. Utilizing these multicolor bP-based inks as an infrared light source, a gas sensing system is demonstrated that selectively detects gases, such as CO2 and CH4 whose absorption band varies around 4.3 and 3.3 µm, respectively. The presented ink formulation sets the stage for the advancement of multiplex MWIR optoelectronics, including spectrometers and spectral imaging using a low-cost material processing platform.

Wet-Chemical Synthesis of Elemental 2D Materials

Wet-chemical synthesis refers to the bottom-up chemical synthesis in solution, which is among the most popular synthetic approaches towards functional two-dimensional (2D) materials. It offers several advantages, including cost-effectiveness, high yields,, precious control over the production process. As an emerging family of 2D materials, elemental 2D materials (Xenes) have shown great potential in various applications such as electronics, catalysts, biochemistry,, sensing technologies due to their exceptional/exotic properties such as large surface area, tunable band gap,, high carrier mobility. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in wet-chemical synthesis of Xenes including tellurene, bismuthene, antimonene, phosphorene,, arsenene. The current solvent compositions, process parameters utilized in wet-chemical synthesis, their effects on the thickness, stability of the resulting Xenes are also presented. Key factors considered involves ligands, precursors, surfactants, reaction time, temperature. Finally, we highlight recent advances, existing challenges in the current application of wet-chemical synthesis for Xenes production, provide perspectives on future improvement.

Strain Engineering of Unconventional Crystal-Phase Noble Metal Nanocatalysts

The crystal phase, alongside the composition, morphology, architecture, facet, size, and dimensionality, has been recognized as a critical factor influencing the properties of noble metal nanomaterials in various applications. In particular, unconventional crystal phases can potentially enable fascinating properties in noble metal nanomaterials. Recent years have witnessed notable advances in the phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN). Within the accessible strategies for phase engineering, the effect of strain cannot be ignored because strain can act not only as the driving force of phase transition but also as the origin of the diverse physicochemical properties of the unconventional crystal phase. In this review, we highlight the development of unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanomaterials within strain engineering. We begin with a short introduction of the unconventional crystal phase and strain effect in noble metal nanomaterials. Next, the correlations of the structure and performance of strain-engineered unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanomaterials in electrocatalysis are highlighted, as well as the phase transitions of noble metal nanomaterials induced by the strain effect. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities within this rapidly developing field (i.e., the strain engineering of unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanocatalysts) are discussed.

Highly branched and ultrathin Au nanodendrites for reduction catalysis

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention due to their distinctive physicochemical properties, with 2D noble metal nanodendrites being particularly intriguing in terms of their properties and functional prospects. However, the synthesis of ultrathin and highly branched gold nanodendrites (AuNDs) still poses challenges. In this study, we successfully achieved the synthesis of highly branched 2D AuNDs with a thickness of 4 nm by employing a carboxyl-functionalized C22-tailed surfactant along with the co-directing agent 2-mercaptonicotinic acid (2-MNA). The careful selection of specific thiol molecules such as 2-MNA is crucial for controlling the degree of branching and promoting the formation of ultrathin nanodendrites. Furthermore, we extended this method to synthesize alloy nanodendrites (AuAg NDs and AuCoAg NDs) using a similar approach. Due to their highly branched and ultrathin two-dimensional morphology, these prepared AuNDs exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the model reaction for 4-NP reduction. This thiol-induced synthesis strategy for AuNDs opens up new possibilities for designing other Au nanomaterials with an ultrathin morphology/structure.

Crystal-Phase Engineering in Heterogeneous Catalysis

The performance of a chemical reaction is critically dependent on the electronic and/or geometric structures of a material in heterogeneous catalysis. Over the past century, the Sabatier principle has already provided a conceptual framework for optimal catalyst design by adjusting the electronic structure of the catalytic material via a change in composition. Beyond composition, it is essential to recognize that the geometric atomic structures of a catalyst, encompassing terraces, edges, steps, kinks, and corners, have a substantial impact on the activity and selectivity of a chemical reaction. Crystal-phase engineering has the capacity to bring about substantial alterations in the electronic and geometric configurations of a catalyst, enabling control over coordination numbers, morphological features, and the arrangement of surface atoms. Modulating the crystallographic phase is therefore an important strategy for improving the stability, activity, and selectivity of catalytic materials. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of how the performance depends on the crystal phase of a catalyst remains elusive, primarily due to the absence of a molecular-level view of active sites across various crystal phases. In this review, we primarily focus on assessing the dependence of catalytic performance on crystal phases to elucidate the challenges and complexities inherent in heterogeneous catalysis, ultimately aiming for improved catalyst design.

In Situ TEM Characterization and Modulation for Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Solid-state phase transformation is an intriguing phenomenon in crystalline or noncrystalline solids due to the distinct physical and chemical properties that can be obtained and modified by phase engineering. Compared to bulk solids, nanomaterials exhibit enhanced capability for phase engineering due to their small sizes and high surface-to-volume ratios, facilitating various emerging applications. To establish a comprehensive atomistic understanding of phase engineering, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have emerged as powerful tools, providing unprecedented atomic-resolution imaging, multiple characterization and stimulation mechanisms, and real-time integrations with various external fields. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in in situ TEM studies to characterize and modulate nanomaterials for phase transformations under different stimuli, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, environmental, optical, and magnetic factors. We briefly introduce crystalline structures and polymorphism and then summarize phase stability and phase transformation models. The advanced experimental setups of in situ techniques are outlined and the advantages of in situ TEM phase engineering are highlighted, as demonstrated via several representative examples. Besides, the distinctive properties that can be obtained from in situ phase engineering are presented. Finally, current challenges and future research opportunities, along with their potential applications, are suggested.

Synthesis of 2H/fcc-Heterophase AuCu Nanostructures for Highly Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction at Industrial Current Densities

Structural engineering of nanomaterials offers a promising way for developing high-performance catalysts toward catalysis. However, the delicate modulation of thermodynamically unfavorable nanostructures with unconventional phases still remains a challenge. Here, the synthesis of hierarchical AuCu nanostructures is reported with hexagonal close-packed (2H-type)/face-centered cubic (fcc) heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects (e.g., stacking faults, twin boundaries, and grain boundaries), and tunable Cu content. The obtained 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 hierarchical nanosheets exhibit excellent performance for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce CO, outperforming the 2H/fcc Au91 Cu9 and fcc Au99 Cu1 . The experimental results, especially those obtained by in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, suggest that the enhanced catalytic performance of 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 arises from the unconventional 2H/fcc heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects, and appropriate alloying of Cu. Impressively, the 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 shows CO Faradaic efficiencies of 96.6% and 92.6% at industrial current densities of 300 and 500 mA cm-2 , respectively, as well as good durability, placing it among the best CO2 reduction electrocatalysts for CO production. The atomically structural regulation based on phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) provides an avenue for the rational design and preparation of high-performance electrocatalysts for various catalytic applications.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Applications of Transmission Electron Microscopy in Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) is an emerging field that aims to tailor the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials by precisely manipulating their crystal phases. To advance PEN effectively, it is vital to possess the capability of characterizing the structures and compositions of nanomaterials with precision. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a versatile tool that combines reciprocal-space diffraction, real-space imaging, and spectroscopic techniques, allowing for comprehensive characterization with exceptional resolution in the domains of time, space, momentum, and, increasingly, even energy. In this Review, we first introduce the fundamental mechanisms behind various TEM-related techniques, along with their respective application scopes and limitations. Subsequently, we review notable applications of TEM in PEN research, including applications in fields such as metallic nanostructures, carbon allotropes, low-dimensional materials, and nanoporous materials. Specifically, we underscore its efficacy in phase identification, composition and chemical state analysis, in situ observations of phase evolution, as well as the challenges encountered when dealing with beam-sensitive materials. Furthermore, we discuss the potential generation of artifacts during TEM imaging, particularly in scanning modes, and propose methods to minimize their occurrence. Finally, we offer our insights into the present state and future trends of this field, discussing emerging technologies including four-dimensional scanning TEM, three-dimensional atomic-resolution imaging, and electron microscopy automation while highlighting the significance and feasibility of these advancements.

Strain and Surface Engineering of Multicomponent Metallic Nanomaterials with Unconventional Phases

Multicomponent metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases show great prospects in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, owing to unique crystal structures and abundant structural effects. In this review, we emphasize the progress in the strain and surface engineering of these novel nanomaterials. We start with a brief introduction of the structural configurations of these materials, based on the interaction types between the components. Next, the fundamentals of strain, strain effect in relevant metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases, and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then the progress in surface engineering of these multicomponent metallic nanomaterials is demonstrated from the aspects of morphology control, crystallinity control, surface modification, and surface reconstruction. Moreover, the applications of the strain- and surface-engineered unconventional nanomaterials mainly in electrocatalysis are also introduced, where in addition to the catalytic performance, the structure-performance correlations are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising field are prospected.

Seed free synthesis of polyethylene glycol stabilized gold nanoprisms exploiting manganese metal at low pH

Manganese powder with a suitable potential (, -1.19 V) has never been investigated for the reduction of Au³⁺ (, 1.00 V). In this study, we have utilized and low pH dependent for the polyethylene glycol stabilized gold nanoprism synthesis by reducing AuCl^-₄ in the presence of thiol terminated polyethylene glycol as the stabilizing agent. The synthetic methodology for gold nanoprisms has been optimized by pH and Cl^- ion combination. Time dependent absorbance studies have been conducted to demonstrate the role of various reaction parameters such as the stabilizing agent, HCl concentration, temperature, and Mn metal. The synthesized gold nanoprism has been further utilized as a seed for nucleic acid and selected amino acid mediated edge and surface growth, respectively.

Structural Transformation of Unconventional-Phase Materials

The structural transformation of materials, which involves the evolution of different structural features, including phase, composition, morphology, etc., under external conditions, represents an important fundamental phenomenon and has drawn substantial research interest. Recently, materials with unconventional phases that are different from their thermodynamically stable ones have been demonstrated to possess distinct properties and compelling functions and can further serve as starting materials for structural transformation studies. The identification and mechanism study of the structural transformation process of unconventional-phase starting materials can not only provide deep insights into their thermodynamic stability in potential applications but also offer effective approaches for the synthesis of other unconventional structures. Here, we briefly summarize the recent research progress on the structural transformation of some typical starting materials with various unconventional phases, including the metastable crystalline phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase, induced by different approaches. The importance of unconventional-phase starting materials in the structural modulation of resultant intermediates and products will be highlighted. The employment of diverse in situ/operando characterization techniques and theoretical simulations in studying the mechanism of the structural transformation process will also be introduced. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges in this emerging research field and provide some future research directions.

Intrinsic Optical Properties and Emerging Applications of Gold Nanostructures

The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Coherent hexagonal platinum skin on nickel nanocrystals for enhanced hydrogen evolution activity

Metastable noble metal nanocrystals may exhibit distinctive catalytic properties to address the sluggish kinetics of many important processes, including the hydrogen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions for water-electrolysis hydrogen production. However, the exploration of metastable noble metal nanocrystals is still in its infancy and suffers from a lack of sufficient synthesis and electronic engineering strategies to fully stimulate their potential in catalysis. In this paper, we report a synthesis of metastable hexagonal Pt nanostructures by coherent growth on 3d transition metal nanocrystals such as Ni without involving galvanic replacement reaction, which expands the frontier of the phase-replication synthesis. Unlike noble metal substrates, the 3d transition metal substrate owns more crystal phases and lower cost and endows the hexagonal Pt skin with substantial compressive strains and programmable charge density, making the electronic properties particularly preferred for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. The energy barriers are greatly reduced, pushing the activity to 133 mA cmgeo-2 and 17.4 mA μgPt-1 at -70 mV with 1.5 µg of Pt in 1 M KOH. Our strategy paves the way for metastable noble metal catalysts with tailored electronic properties for highly efficient and cost-effective energy conversion.

Homogeneous Metastable Hexagonal Phase Iridium Enhances Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Catalytic reactions are surface-sensitive processes. Fabrication of homogeneous metastable metals can be used to promote phase-dependent catalytic performance; however, this has been a challenging task. Herein, homogeneous metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ir is epitaxially grown onto metastable phase hcp Ni, as demonstrated using spherical aberration electron microscopy. The as-fabricated metastable hcp Ir exhibits high intrinsic activity for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In particular, metastable hcp Ir delivers a low overpotential of 17 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and presents a high specific activity of 8.55 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of 38.26 s-1 at -0.07 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Owing to its epitaxially grown structure, metastable hcp Ir is highly stable. Theoretical calculations reveal that metastable hcp Ir promotes H2 O adsorption and fast H2 O dissociation, which contributes to its remarkable HER activity. Findings can elucidate the crystal phase-controlled synthesis of advanced noble metal nanomaterials for the fundamental catalytic applications.

Defect engineering of two-dimensional materials for advanced energy conversion and storage

In the global trend towards carbon neutrality, sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies are of vital significance to tackle the energy crisis and climate change. However, traditional electrode materials gradually reach their property limits. Two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring large aspect ratios and tunable surface properties exhibit tremendous potential for improving the performance of energy conversion and storage devices. To rationally control the physical and chemical properties for specific applications, defect engineering of 2D materials has been investigated extensively, and is becoming a versatile strategy to promote the electrode reaction kinetics. Simultaneously, exploring the in-depth mechanisms underlying defect action in electrode reactions is crucial to provide profound insight into structure tailoring and property optimization. In this review, we highlight the cutting-edge advances in defect engineering in 2D materials as well as their considerable effects in energy-related applications. Moreover, the confronting challenges and promising directions are discussed for the development of advanced energy conversion and storage systems.

Two-Dimensional Metal Nanostructures: From Theoretical Understanding to Experiment

This paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures, particularly nanosheets. As metal often exists in the high-symmetry crystal phase, such as face centered cubic structures, reducing the symmetry is often needed for the formation of low-dimensional nanostructures. Recent advances in characterization and theory allow for a deeper understanding of the formation of 2D nanostructures. This Review firstly describes the relevant theoretical framework to help the experimentalists understand chemical driving forces for the synthesis of 2D metal nanostructures, followed by examples on the shape control of different metals. Recent applications of 2D metal nanostructures, including catalysis, bioimaging, plasmonics, and sensing, are discussed. We end the Review with a summary and outlook of the challenges and opportunities in the design, synthesis, and application of 2D metal nanostructures.

A crystal glass-nanostructured Al-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Platinum-based catalysts are widely used in hydrogen evolution reactions; however, their applications are restricted because of the cost-efficiency trade-off. Here, we present a thermodynamics-based design strategy for synthesizing an Al₇₃Mn₇Ru₂₀ (atomic %) metal catalyst via combinatorial magnetron co-sputtering. The new electrocatalyst is composed of ~2 nanometers of medium-entropy nanocrystals surrounded by ~2 nanometers of amorphous regions. The catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, similar to that of single-atom catalysts and better than that of nanocluster-based catalysts. We use aluminum rather than a noble metal as the principal element of the catalyst and ruthenium, which is cheaper than platinum, as the noble metal component. The design strategy provides an efficient route for the development of electrocatalysts for use in large-scale hydrogen production. Moreover, the superior hydrogen reaction evolution created by the synergistic effect of the nano-dual-phase structure is expected to guide the development of high-performance catalysts in other alloy systems.

Boosting the reaction kinetics in aprotic lithium-carbon dioxide batteries with unconventional phase metal nanomaterials

Given the high energy density and eco-friendly characteristics, lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries have been considered to be a next-generation energy technology to promote carbon neutral and space exploration. However, Li-CO2 batteries suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics, causing large overpotential and poor energy efficiency. Here, we observe enhanced reaction kinetics in aprotic Li-CO2 batteries with unconventional phase 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) iridium (Ir) nanostructures grown on gold template. Significantly, 4H/fcc Ir exhibits superior electrochemical performance over fcc Ir in facilitating the round-trip reaction kinetics of Li+-mediated CO2 reduction and evolution, achieving a low charge plateau below 3.61 V and high energy efficiency of 83.8%. Ex situ/in situ studies and theoretical calculations reveal that the boosted reaction kinetics arises from the highly reversible generation of amorphous/low-crystalline discharge products on 4H/fcc Ir via the Ir-O coupling. The demonstration of flexible Li-CO2 pouch cells with 4H/fcc Ir suggests the feasibility of using unconventional phase nanomaterials in practical scenarios.

Thermally activated microstructural evolution of metallic heterophase nanoparticles: insights from molecular dynamics simulations

A crystal phase is a key factor to determine the physical and chemical properties of crystalline materials. As a new class of nanoscale structures, heterophase nanoparticles, which assemble conventional and unconventional phases, exhibit exceptional properties in comparison with their single-phase counterparts. In this work, we explored the thermodynamic stability of Au, Co, and AuCo heterophase nanoparticles with fcc and hcp phases by using molecular dynamics simulations. These heterostructured nanoparticles were continuously heated to examine their thermally activated structural evolutions. Au and Co single-phase nanoparticles were also considered for comparison. The results show that the phase transition between fcc and hcp is absent in these heterophase nanoparticles despite the existence of an unconventional phase. Although the melting of Au and Co heterophase nanoparticles is homogeneous, AuCo heterophase nanoparticles show heterogeneous melting, i.e., the Au fcc domain firstly melts, followed by the melting of the Co hcp domain, exhibiting a typical two-stage melting characteristic and resulting in the existence of a solid-core/liquid-shell structure within a considerable temperature region. Furthermore, the mutual diffusion of atoms between fcc and hcp domains is observed in the Au and Co heterophase nanoparticles. However, the unidirectional diffusion from the Au domain to the Co domain is found in the AuCo heterophase nanoparticles prior to their overall melting. This study deepens the fundamental understanding of the thermodynamic evolution of metallic heterogeneous nanoparticles and provides mechanistic and quantitative guidance for the rational design and applications of nanoscale multiphase heterostructures.

Boosting the Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Reaction by Nanostructured Metal Materials via Defects Engineering

Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) is one of the most effective methods to convert CO₂ into useful fuels. Introducing defects into metal nanostructures can effectively improve the catalytic activity and selectivity towards CO₂RR. This review provides the recent progress on the use of metal nanomaterials with defects towards electrochemical CO₂RR and defects engineering methods. Accompanying these ideas, we introduce the structure of defects characterized by electron microscopy techniques as the characterization and analysis of defects are relatively difficult. Subsequently, we present the intrinsic mechanism of how the defects affect CO₂RR performance. Finally, to promote a wide and deep study in this field, the perspectives and challenges concerning defects engineering in metal nanomaterials towards CO₂RR are put forward.

Insight into the effects of the crystal phase of Ru over ultrathin Ru@Pt core-shell nanosheets for methanol electrooxidation

Coating a second metal on the surface of ultrathin 2D nanosheets (NSs) could induce lattice strain and modify the electronic structure, thereby changing the surface reactivity. Herein, we report the effects of different crystal phases of Ru on the electrocatalytic performance of ultrathin Ru@Pt core-shell NSs for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Importantly, Ru with a novel face-centered-cubic phase was found to have more effect on the electronic structure of Pt than Ru with a conventional hexagonal close-packed phase, thereby leading to improved electrocatalytic activity toward the MOR under acidic and basic conditions. It is believed that the strategy presented here would offer a new approach to the construction of bimetallic core-shell nanostructures with various promising applications.

Anomalously Isotropic Electron Transport and Weak Electron-Phonon Interactions in Hexagonal Noble Metals

The electrical transport properties of typical hexagonal metals are anisotropic because of their anisotropic lattice structures. Unexpectedly, we show that the electron transport properties in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) noble metals are almost isotropic. Although the electron transport properties of an individual electronic band are highly anisotropic, the total contributions are almost equal in different crystalline orientations because of the complementary contributions of different bands. The electron transport is severely limited by phonons for metals with multisheet Fermi surfaces and optical phonon polarizations. However, it is found the electron-phonon interactions are weak in hcp noble metals, although their Fermi surfaces and phonon spectra are complicated. The electronic structure acts as a phonon filter, resulting in small electron-phonon scattering rates. The weak electron-phonon interactions are beneficial to electron and thermal transport, indicating hcp noble metals have great potential to be used in electronics and solar cells.

Wet-chemical synthesis of two-dimensional metal nanomaterials for electrocatalysis

Two-dimensional (2D) metal nanomaterials have gained ever-growing research interest owing to their fascinating physicochemical properties and promising application, especially in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, we briefly introduce the recent advances in wet-chemical synthesis of 2D metal nanomaterials. Subsequently, the catalytic performances of 2D metal nanomaterials in a variety of electrochemical reactions are illustrated. Finally, we summarize current challenges and highlight our perspectives on preparing high-performance 2D metal electrocatalysts.

Relationship between the Formation of Magnetic Clusters and Hexagonal Phase of Gold Matrix in AuxFe1-x Nanophase Thin Films

AuxFe1-x nanophase thin films of different compositions and thicknesses were prepared by co-deposition magnetron sputtering. Complex morpho-structural and magnetic investigations of the films were performed by X-ray Diffraction, cross-section Transmission Electron Microscopy, Selected Area Electron Diffraction, Magneto Optical Kerr Effect, Superconducting Quantum Interference Device magnetometry and Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy. It was proven that depending on the preparation conditions, different configurations of defect α-Fe magnetic clusters, i.e., randomly distributed or auto-assembled in lamellar or filiform configurations, can be formed in the Au matrix. A close relationship between the Fe clustering process and the type of the crystalline structure of the Au matrix was underlined, with the stabilization of a hexagonal phase at a composition close to 70 at. % of Au and at optimal thickness. Due to different types of inter-cluster magnetic interactions and spin anisotropies, different types of magnetic order from 2D Ising type to 3D Heisenberg type, as well as superparamagnetic behavior of non-interacting Fe clusters of similar average size, were evidenced.

Surface Molecular Functionalization of Unusual Phase Metal Nanomaterials for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction under Industry-Relevant Current Density

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) provides a sustainable strategy to relieve global warming and achieve carbon neutrality. However, the practical application of CO₂ RR is still limited by the poor selectivity and low current density. Here, the surface molecular functionalization of unusual phase metal nanomaterials for high-performance CO₂ RR under industry-relevant current density is reported. It is observed that 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole (MMT)-modified 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) gold (Au) nanorods demonstrate greatly enhanced CO₂ RR performance than original oleylamine (OAm)-capped 4H/fcc Au nanorods in both an H-type cell and flow cell. Significantly, MMT-modified 4H/fcc Au nanorods deliver an excellent carbon monoxide selectivity of 95.6% under the industry-relevant current density of 200 mA cm^-2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal distinct electronic modulations by surface ligands, in which MMT improves while OAm suppresses the surface electroactivity of 4H/fcc Au nanorods. Furthermore, this method can be extended to various MMT derivatives and conventional fcc Au nanostructures in boosting CO₂ RR performance.

Deformation-Induced Phase Transformations in Gold Nanoribbons with the 4H Phase

The mechanical stability of metallic nanomaterials has been intensively studied due to their unique structures and promising applications. Although extensive investigations have been carried out on the deformation behaviors of metallic nanomaterials, the atomic-scale deformation mechanism of metallic nanomaterials with unconventional hexagonal structures remains unclear because of the lack of direct experimental observation. Here, we conduct an atomic-resolution in situ tensile-straining transmission electron microscopy investigation on the deformation mechanism of gold nanoribbons with the 4H (hexagonal) phase. Our results reveal that plastic deformation in the 4H gold nanoribbons comprises three stages, in which both full and partial dislocations are involved. At the early deformation stage, plastic deformation is governed by full dislocation activities. Partial dislocations are subsequently activated in regions that have undergone full dislocation gliding, leading to phase transformation from the 4H phase to the face-centered cubic (FCC) phase. At the last stage of the deformation process, the volume fraction of the FCC phase increases, and full dislocation activities in the FCC regions also play an important role.

Phase Transition to Heptagonal-Cluster-Packed Structure of Gold Nanoribbons

Transforming periodic crystals into packing of atomic clusters is attracting enormous interest for both fundamental research and potential application, but it still remains a big challenge for noble metals. Here, we have observed gold nanoribbons packed with heptagonal clusters, where every two or three constituent clusters connect edge-to-edge with their neighbors. This is the first reported metallic structure packed from building blocks with heptagonal symmetry. The cluster-packed nanoribbons transited from two-dimensional hexagonal structure under tensile condition and a reverse transition occurred by compression, resolved by in situ observation. The cluster-packed structure was stabilized by the s-d orbital hybridization. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the conductance of the ribbons undergoes a quantized change from 6 to 4 G₀ (G₀ = 2e²/h) during the phase transition and backward for the reverse transition.

Synthesis of Pd3 Sn and PdCuSn Nanorods with L12 Phase for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

The crystal phase of nanomaterials is one of the key parameters determining their physicochemical properties and performance in various applications. However, it still remains a great challenge to synthesize nanomaterials with different crystal phases while maintaining the same composition, size, and morphology. Here, a facile, one-pot, wet-chemical method is reported to synthesize Pd₃ Sn nanorods with comparable size and morphology but different crystal phases, that is, an ordered intermetallic and a disordered alloy with L1₂ and face-centered cubic (fcc) phases, respectively. The crystal phase of the as-synthesized Pd₃ Sn nanorods is easily tuned by altering the types of tin precursors and solvents. Moreover, the approach can also be used to synthesize ternary PdCuSn nanorods with the L1₂ crystal phase. When used as electrocatalysts, the L1₂ Pd₃ Sn nanorods exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance toward the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) compared to their fcc counterpart. Impressively, compared to the L1₂ Pd₃ Sn nanorods, the ternary L1₂ PdCuSn nanorods exhibit more enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward the EOR, yielding a high mass current density up to 6.22 A mg_Pd ^-1 , which is superior to the commercial Pd/C catalyst and among the best reported Pd-based EOR electrocatalysts.

Two-dimensional biomaterials: material science, biological effect and biomedical engineering applications

To date, nanotechnology has increasingly been identified as a promising and efficient means to address a number of challenges associated with public health. In the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) biomaterials, as a unique nanoplatform with planar topology, have attracted explosive interest in various fields such as biomedicine due to their unique morphology, physicochemical properties and biological effect. Motivated by the progress of graphene in biomedicine, dozens of types of ultrathin 2D biomaterials have found versatile bio-applications, including biosensing, biomedical imaging, delivery of therapeutic agents, cancer theranostics, tissue engineering, as well as others. The effective utilization of 2D biomaterials stems from the in-depth knowledge of structure-property-bioactivity-biosafety-application-performance relationships. A comprehensive summary of 2D biomaterials for biomedicine is still lacking. In this comprehensive review, we aim to concentrate on the state-of-the-art 2D biomaterials with a particular focus on their versatile biomedical applications. In particular, we discuss the design, fabrication and functionalization of 2D biomaterials used for diverse biomedical applications based on the up-to-date progress. Furthermore, the interactions between 2D biomaterials and biological systems on the spatial-temporal scale are highlighted, which will deepen the understanding of the underlying action mechanism of 2D biomaterials aiding their design with improved functionalities. Finally, taking the bench-to-bedside as a focus, we conclude this review by proposing the current crucial issues/challenges and presenting the future development directions to advance the clinical translation of these emerging 2D biomaterials.

Emerging beyond-graphene elemental 2D materials for energy and catalysis applications

Elemental two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for energy and catalysis applications due to their unique physical, chemical, and electronic properties. These materials are advantageous in offering massive surface-to-volume ratios, favorable transport properties, intriguing physicochemical properties, and confinement effects resulting from the 2D ultrathin structure. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in emerging energy and catalysis applications based on beyond-graphene elemental 2D materials. First, we briefly introduce the general classification, structure, and properties of elemental 2D materials and the new advances in material preparation. We then discuss various applications in energy harvesting and storage, including solar cells, piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators, thermoelectric devices, batteries, and supercapacitors. We further discuss the explorations of beyond-graphene elemental 2D materials for electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the future development of elemental 2D materials in energy and catalysis are discussed.

Nanowelding in Whole-Lifetime Bottom-Up Manufacturing: From Assembly to Service

The continuous miniaturization of microelectronics is pushing the transformation of nanomanufacturing modes from top-down to bottom-up. Bottom-up manufacturing is essentially the way of assembling nanostructures from atoms, clusters, quantum dots, etc. The assembly process relies on nanowelding which also existed in the synthesis process of nanostructures, construction and repair of nanonetworks, interconnects, integrated circuits, and nanodevices. First, many kinds of novel nanomaterials and nanostructures from 0D to 1D, and even 2D are synthesized by nanowelding. Second, the connection of nanostructures and interfaces between metal/semiconductor-metal/semiconductor is realized through low-temperature heat-assisted nanowelding, mechanical-assisted nanowelding, or cold welding. Finally, 2D and 3D interconnects, flexible transparent electrodes, integrated circuits, and nanodevices are constructed, functioned, or self-healed by nanowelding. All of the three nanomanufacturing stages follow the rule of "oriented attachment" mechanisms. Thus, the whole-lifetime bottom-up manufacturing process from the synthesis and connection of nanostructures to the construction and service of nanodevices can be organically integrated by nanowelding. The authors hope this review can bring some new perspective in future semiconductor industrialization development in the expansion of multi-material systems, technology pathway for the refined design, controlled synthesis and in situ characterization of complex nanostructures, and the strategies to develop and repair novel nanodevices in service.

Crystal Structure Dependent Dissolution of Non-Cubic Au Crystallites in Aqua Regia

Properties of metal crystallites are governed by their morphologies and inherent crystal structures. In this work, bipyramidal Au microcrystallites hosting non-cubic lattices, body-centered orthorhombic and tetragonal (together termed as bc(o,t)), are investigated for their stability in aqua regia. Specifically, microcrystallites comprising 92 % of bc(o,t) have been subjected to aqua regia of different concentrations and the changes in morphology and lattice phases have been monitored using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The dissolution process was found to be crystal structure dependent and begin at the bipyramidal tips enriched with fcc lattice while retaining the bc(o,t) rich body. Interestingly, with increasing the reaction times, the remaining core was found to be highly reluctant to dissolution and instead, transformed to tetragonal lattices which with increasing treatment, exhibited lattice parameters closer to that of fcc. The study reveals the presence of a bc(o,t)-fcc core-shell structure with the tips enriched with fcc.

Differences and Similarities of Photocatalysis and Electrocatalysis in Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials: Strategies, Traps, Applications and Challenges

Photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have been essential parts of electrochemical processes for over half a century. Recent progress in the controllable synthesis of 2D nanomaterials has exhibited enhanced catalytic performance compared to bulk materials. This has led to significant interest in the exploitation of 2D nanomaterials for catalysis. There have been a variety of excellent reviews on 2D nanomaterials for catalysis, but related issues of differences and similarities between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in 2D nanomaterials are still vacant. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the differences and similarities of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in the latest 2D nanomaterials. Strategies and traps for performance enhancement of 2D nanocatalysts are highlighted, which point out the differences and similarities of series issues for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In addition, 2D nanocatalysts and their catalytic applications are discussed. Finally, opportunities, challenges and development directions for 2D nanocatalysts are described. The intention of this review is to inspire and direct interest in this research realm for the creation of future 2D nanomaterials for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Surfactant-Free Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Metallic Nanonetworks via Nanobubble-Assisted Self-Assembly

Three-dimensional metallic nanonetworks (3D-MNWs) demonstrate unique performances across a wide range of fields, and their facile and green synthetic method is of high significance. Herein, we report a self-generated-nanobubble scaffolding strategy for the fabrication of 3D-MNWs, which employs aqua ammonia (AA) as a nanobubble reservoir and avoids the use of any surfactants or polymeric capping agents. Benefiting from the interaction between ammonia and metallic nanoparticles, finely interlocked nanonetworks (Au, Pt, Ag, and Cu) with curved geometry and abundant pores are obtained by precisely controlling the anisotropic kinetic growth using a strong reducing agent and a high concentration of AA. As a demonstration, the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is tested to assess the electrocatalytic performance of the Pt 3D-MNWs. The peak current of Pt 3D-MNWs reaches 152 mA/mg^Pt, which is 2.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt black. This unique nanobubble-assisted strategy has great potential in the basic synthetic prototype for polyporous nanomaterials.
