Hydrophobicity of rare-earth oxide ceramics

Sensitive detection of histamine utilizing the SERS platform combined with an azo coupling reaction and a composite hydrophobic layer

Herein, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was combined with an azo coupling reaction and an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes for the detection of histamine. The praseodymium oxide on aluminum alloy was successfully synthesized by the rare-earth-salt-solution boiling bath method and modified by stearic acid. Its surface exhibits a water contact angle (WCA) of 125.0°. Through the azo derivatization reaction with 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTA) diazonium salts, histamine can be converted into the derivatization product with higher Raman activity. The mixture of the derivatization product and β-cyclodextrin-modified Ag nanoparticles (β-CD-AgNPs) were dropped onto the surface of an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes, and dried for SERS measurement. The intensity ratio between the SERS peaks at 1246 cm-1 and 1104 cm-1 (I1246/I1104) of the derivatization product was used for the quantification of histamine. Under the selected conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for this method were 7.2 nM (S/N = 3) and 24 nM (S/N = 10), respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of this method for the determination of 1 μM histamine was 6.1 % (n = 20). The method was also successfully used for the determination of histamine in fish samples with recoveries ranging from 92 % to 111 %. The present method is simple, sensitive, reliable, and may provide a new approach for preparing the composite hydrophobic layer that can enhance SERS signals through hydrophobic condensation effect. Meanwhile, it may have a promising future in the determination of small molecular compounds containing an imidazole ring.

Outstanding CO2 Photoreduction in Single-Atom Thulium Modified Carbon Nitride

CO2 reduction photocatalysts are favorable for obtaining renewable energy. Enriched active sites and effective photogenerated-carriers separation are keys for improving CO2 photo-reduction. A thulium (Tm) single atom tailoring strategy introducing carbon vacancies in porous tubular graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) surpassing the ever-reported g-C3N4 based photocatalysts, with 199.47 µmol g-1 h-1 CO yield, 96.8% CO selectivity, 0.84% apparent quantum efficiency and excellent photocatalytic stability, is implemented in this work. Results revealed that in-plane Tm sites and interlayer-bridged Tm-N charge transfer channels significantly enhanced the aggregation/transfer of photogenerated electrons thus promoting CO2 adsorption/activation and contributing to *COOH intermediates formation. Meanwhile, Tm atoms and carbon vacancies both benefit for rich active sites and enhanced photogenerated-charge separation, thus optimizing reaction pathway and leading to excellent CO2 photo-reduction. This work not only provides guidelines for CO2 photo-reduction catalysts design but also offers mechanistic insights into single-atom based photocatalysts for solar fuel production.

Scalable Preparation of Liquid Infused Coatings for Lubrication of 103 m2 Dry Ski Slopes

To facilitate effective training for freestyle skiers on artificial dry ski slopes, it is crucial to reduce the friction coefficient of the slopes and closely match it with that of snow. Traditional lubrication methods, such as water or soapy water, come with multiple disadvantages, including water waste, which leads to environmental pollution, short-lived effectiveness, and high costs. In this study, we have successfully developed a method for the scalable preparation of a liquid-infused coating (LIC) by tandem spraying inexpensive and environmentally friendly SiO2 particles and silicone oil lubricants. Experimental results showed that the resulting LIC is capable of imparting slippery properties to various surfaces, regardless of the surface chemistry. Moreover, the presence of LIC could reduce the friction coefficient significantly. By carefully regulating the surface composition, we achieved a friction coefficient of 0.059 between a snowboard and the LIC-functionalized ski slope, closely matching that between the snowboard and snow in a typical skiing competition venue (∼0.06). We successfully applied LIC onto 103 m2 dry ski slopes, providing a training ground for professional freestyle skiers.

Summary of the Research Progress on Advanced Engineering, Processes, and Process Parameters of Rare Earth Green Metallurgy

The addition of rare earth metals to aluminum alloys can effectively improve their corrosion resistance and has been widely used in the aerospace and military industries. However, the current methods for the preparation of rare earth metals involve long processing steps, high energy consumption, and high carbon emissions, which severely constrains the development of aluminum alloys. Its output is further developed. To this end, this paper reviews mainstream rare earth production processes (precipitation methods, microemulsion methods, roasting-sulfuric acid leaching methods, electrochemical methods, solvent extraction methods, and ion exchange methods) to provide basic information for the green smelting of rare earth metals and help promote the development of green rare earth smelting. Based on the advantages and disadvantages of each process as well as recent research results, the optimal process parameters and production efficiency were summarized. Studies have concluded that the precipitation method is mostly used for the recovery of rare earth elements and related valuable metals from solid waste; the microemulsion method is mostly used for the preparation of nanosized rare earth alloys by doping; the roasting-sulfuric acid leaching method is mostly used for the treatment of raw rare earth ores; and the molten salt electrolysis method is a more specific method. This is a green and environmentally friendly production process. The results of this study can provide direction for the realization of green rare earth smelting and provide a reference for improving the existing rare earth smelting process.

Wetting State Transition of Laser Direct Writing Aluminum Surface Based on Coupling Effect of Micro/Nanoscale Characteristics

Micro/nanostructured metal surfaces fabricated by laser direct writing (LDW) have been widely used in wettability-related fields. Previous studies focused on the effects of surface structural patterns or chemical composition on wettability, while the coupling mechanism and respective contributions of the two are not distinct. This paper reveals the coupling effect of micro/nanoscale characteristics on the wettability of LDW aluminum surfaces and elucidates the transition mechanism between wetting states on the surfaces with linear laser energy density. Through the contact angle experiments, a wetting state transition of the LDW surface is found from a more hydrophilic than pristine rose petal effect to lotus effect. Based on the bionic analysis method of the superhydrophobicity factors of lotus leaves, the contributions to the wettability of LDW surfaces are divided into the micro/nanoscale characteristics. The theoretical model for identifying the wetting state of a rough surface is proposed. Based on this model, the average Young's contact angle, θ̅Y, is calculated, which indicates the contribution of the nanoscale characteristics. During the transition process from rose petal effect to lotus effect, θ̅Y > 90° is a necessary condition for detachment from the rose petal effect, which is contributed by the high specific surface organic adsorption at the nanoscale. What is more, the wetting state determined by the microscale characteristics further enhances its hydrophobicity, leading to the lotus effect. Based on the wetting state identification model and the Cassie-Baxter equation, the change of micro/nanoscale characteristics on aluminum surfaces after LDW treatment is presented, and the influence of micro/nanoscale characteristics on the wetting state is decoupled and quantified. This research helps to coordinate the effects of surface structure and chemical composition on wettability in the design of specific wettability functional surfaces and can also be applied to other high heat density surface processing fields.

Cobalt-Doped Ceria Sensitizer Effects on Metal Oxide Nanofibers: Heightened Surface Reactivity for High-Performing Chemiresistive Sensors

Chemiresistive gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides typically rely on noble metal catalysts to enhance their sensitivity and selectivity. However, noble metal catalysts have several drawbacks for practical utilization, including their high cost, their propensity for spontaneous agglomeration, and poisoning effects with certain types of gases. As such, in the interest of commercializing the chemiresistive gas sensor technology, we propose an alternative design for a noble-metal-free sensing material through the case study of Co-doped ceria (Co-CeO2) catalysts embedded in a SnO2 matrix. In this investigation, we utilized electrospinning and subsequent calcination to prepare Co-CeO2 catalyst nanoparticles integrated with SnO2 nanofibers (NFs) with uniform particle distribution and particle size regulation down to the sub-2 nm regime. The resulting Co-CeO2@SnO2 NFs exhibited superior gas sensing characteristics toward isoprene (C5H8) gas, a significant biomarker for monitoring the onset of various diseases through breath diagnostics. In particular, we identified that the Co-CeO2 catalysts, owing to the transition metal doping, facilitated the spillover of chemisorbed oxygen species to the SnO2 sensing body. This resulting in the sensor having a 27.4-fold higher response toward 5 ppm of C5H8 (compared to pristine SnO2), exceptionally high selectivity, and a low detection limit of 100 ppb. The sensor also exhibited high stability for prolonged response-recovery cycles, attesting to the strong anchoring of Co-CeO2 catalysts in the SnO2 matrix. Based on our findings, the transition metal-doped metal oxide catalysts, such as Co-CeO2, demonstrate strong potential to completely replace noble metal catalysts, thereby advancing the development of the commercially viable chemiresistive gas sensors free from noble metals, capable of detecting target gases at sub-ppm levels.

Prevention of uropathogenic E. coli biofilm formation by hydrophobic nanoparticle coatings on polymeric substrates

Biofilms in infections are a major health-care challenge and strategies to reduce their formation on medical devices are crucial. Fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings based on hydrocarbon adsorption on rare-earth oxides constitutes an attractive strategy, but their capacity to prevent biofilm formation has not been studied. Here, we explore a scalable and reproducible nanofabrication process for the manufacture of such superhydrophobic coatings and study their antibiofilm activity against clinically-relevant uropathogenic E. coli. These coatings reduce bacterial biofilm formation and prevent biofouling with potential applications preventing medical device related infections.

Microplastic contaminants detection in aquatic environment by hydrophobic cerium oxide nanoparticles

Microplastics (MPs) poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human health, demanding immediate attention. The reported research work offers an effective and low cost method towards the detection of toxic MPs. In this study, hydrophobic cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are synthesized and applied as promising electrode material for the detection of two different types of MPs, i.e. polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Through electrochemical analyses, such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), hydrophobic CeO2 NPs modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) based sensor demonstrated remarkable sensitivity of ∼0.0343 AmLmg-1cm-2 and detection limit of ∼0.226 mgmL-1, with promising correlation coefficient (R2) towards the detection of PE (∼27-32 μm). Furthermore, hydrophobic CeO2 NPs modified GCE exhibited promising stability and reproducibility towards PE (∼27-32 μm), suggesting the promising potential of hydrophobic CeO2 NPs as electrode materials for an electrochemical microplastics detection.

Enhancing low-temperature CO removal in complex flue gases: A study on La and Cu doped Co3O4 catalysts under real-world combustion environment

Designing CO oxidation catalysts for complex flue gases conditions is particularly challenging in fire scenarios. Traditional flue gas simulations use a few representative gases but often fail to adequately evaluate catalyst performance in real-world combustion conditions. In this study, we developed doping strategies using La and Cu to enhance the water resistance of Co3O4 catalysts. Catalyst 0.1La-Co3O4-CuO/CeO2 exhibits exceptional low-temperature catalytic activity, achieving 100% conversion at 130 °C. This enhancement is largely due to the introduction of La, which increases the active Co3+/Co2+ ratio and suppresses hydroxyl group formation on the Co3O4 surface. Cu doping also changes the Co3O4 lattice structure, forming Cu+ as active sites and enhancing the activity at low temperatures. For the first time, steady-state tube furnace and fixed bed were employed to evaluate the catalytic performance of CO in actual combustion atmosphere. Catalyst 0.1La-Co3O4-CuO/CeO2 maintains excellent catalytic efficiency (T100 = 120 °C) under well-ventilated conditions. However, its activity significantly decreases in poorly ventilated environments, due to the competitive adsorption of small molecules at active sites, such as acetone, commonly found in smoke. This study provides valuable insights for designing water-resistant, low-temperature, non-noble metal catalysts and offers a methodology for evaluating CO catalytic activity in real-world environments.

Solidophobic Surface for Electrochemical Extraction of High-Valued Mg(OH)2 Coupled with H2 Production from Seawater

A significant challenge in direct seawater electrolysis is the rapid deactivation of the cathode due to the large scaling of Mg(OH)2. Herein, we synthesized a Pt-coated highly disordered NiCu alloy (Pt-NiCu alloy) electrode with superior solidophobic behavior, enabling stable hydrogen generation (100 mA cm-2, >1000 h durability) and simultaneous production of Mg(OH)2 (>99.0% purity) in electrolyte enriched with Mg2+ and Ca2+. The unconventional solidophobic property primarily stems from the high surface energy of the NiCu alloy substrate, which facilitates the adsorption of surface water and thereby compels the bulk formation of Mg(OH)2 via homogeneous nucleation. The discovery of this solidophobic electrode will revolutionarily simplify the existing techniques for seawater electrolysis and increase the economic viability for seawater electrolysis.

Ambient-mediated wetting on smooth surfaces

A consensus was built in the first half of the 20th century, which was further debated more than 3 decades ago, that the wettability and condensation mechanisms on smooth solid surfaces are modified by the adsorption of organic contaminants present in the environment. Recently, disagreement has formed about this topic once again, as many researchers have overlooked contamination due to its difficulty to eliminate. For example, the intrinsic wettability of rare earth oxides has been reported to be hydrophobic and non-wetting to water. These materials were subsequently shown to display dropwise condensation with steam. Nonetheless, follow on research has demonstrated that the intrinsic wettability of rare earth oxides is hydrophilic and wetting to water, and that a transition to hydrophobicity occurs in a matter of hours-to-days as a consequence of the adsorption of volatile organic compounds from the ambient environment. The adsorption mechanisms, kinetics, and selectivity, of these volatile organic compounds are empirically known to be functions of the substrate material and structure. However, these mechanisms, which govern the surface wettability, remain poorly understood. In this contribution, we introduce current research demonstrating the different intrinsic wettability of metals, rare earth oxides, and other smooth materials, showing that they are intrinsically hydrophilic. Then we provide details on research focusing on the transition from wetting (hydrophilicity) to non-wetting (hydrophobicity) on somooth surfaces due to adsorption of volatile organic compounds. A state-of-the-art figure of merit mapping the wettability of different smooth solid surfaces to ambient exposure as a function of the surface carbon content has also been developed. In addition, we analyse recent works that address these wetting transitions so to shed light on how such processes affect droplet pinning and lateral adhesion. We then conclude with objective perspectives about research on wetting to non-wetting transitions on smooth solid surfaces in an attempt to raise awareness regarding this surface contamination phenomenon within the engineering, interfacial science, and physical chemistry domains.

Confined Water Dominates Ion/Molecule Transport in Hydrogel Nanochannels

Current artificial nanochannels rely more on charge interactions for intelligent mass transport. Nevertheless, popular charged nanochannels would lose their advantages in long-term applications. Confined water, an indispensable transport medium in biological nanochannels, dominating the transport process in the uncharged nanochannels perfectly provides a new perspective. Herein, we achieve confined-water-dominated mass transport in hydrogel nanochannels (HNCs) constructed by in situ photopolymerization of acrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel in anodic alumina (AAO) nanochannels. HNCs show selectivity to Na+ transport and a high transport rate of molecules after introducing Na+/Li+, compared with other alkali metal ions like Cs+/K+. The mechanism given by ATR-FTIR shows that the hydrogen-bonding structure of confined water in HNCs is destabilized by Na+/Li+, which facilitates mass transport, but is constrained by Cs+/K+, resulting in transport inhibition. This work elucidates the relationship between confined water and mass transport in uncharged nanochannels while also presenting a strategy for designing functional nanochannel devices.

Robust Photothermal Icephobic Surface with Mechanical Durability of Multi-Bioinspired Structures

Photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces are potential to become ideal anti-/deicing surfaces due to their rapid water removal, icing delay, and photothermal deicing performance. Here, a robust photothermal icephobic surface with mechanical durability is shown that is integrated with a microspine array inspired by honeycomb and cactus thorn (i.e., MAHC), which is developed by a laser-layered microfabrication strategy. The maximum stress on the microspine of the MAHC is reduced by ≈2/3, due to the protection of the bionic honeycomb structure. Even after 200 linear abrasions by a steel blade, the MAHC remains superior water repellency with a water contact angle of 150.7° and roll-off angles of 10.3°, stable icing delay time (578.2 s), and rapidly photothermal deicing capabilities (401 s). As the MAHC is fabricated on a curvature surface such as a copper alloy transmission line for an overhead high-speed rail, a stable photothermal anti-/deicing in a low-temperature environment still can be achieved effectively. The freezing rain covering the functional transmission line completely slides off within 758 s under one sun illumination. This studying offers insight into the design of novel materials with stable anti-icing/icephobic structures, which would be extended into some applied realms, for example, transportation fields or power systems in cold or low-temperature climates.

2D/2D Dy2O3 Nanosheet/MoO3 Nanoflake Heterostructures for Humidity-Independent and Sensitive Ammonia Detection

Chemiresistive ammonia gas (NH3) sensors have been playing a significant role in the fields of environmental protection, food safety monitoring, and air quality evaluation. Nevertheless, balancing the high sensitivity and humidity tolerance remains challenging. Herein, the two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures of molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanoflakes decorated with dysprosium oxide (Dy2O3) nanosheets (termed Dy2O3/MoO3) were synthesized via a facile probe-sonication method. With respect to pristine MoO3 counterparts, the optimal Dy2O3/MoO3 sensors possessed a 4.49-fold larger response at a lower temperature (30.52@328.2 °C vs 6.8@369.7 °C toward 10 ppm of NH3), shorter response/recovery times (11.6/2.9 s vs 26.9/43.4 s), 52.6-fold higher sensitivity (17.35/ppm vs 0.33/ppm), and a lower theoretical detection limit (1.02 vs 32.82 ppb). Besides the nice reversibility, wide detection range (0.45-100 ppm) and robust long-term stability, inspiringly, the Dy2O3/MoO3 sensors showed a nearly humidity-independent response. These impressive improvements in the NH3-sensing performance were attributed to numerous heterojunctions to strengthen the carrier concentration modulation and the compensation/protection effect of Dy2O3 to mitigate the humidity effect. Moreover, the Dy2O3/MoO3 sensors showed preliminary application potential in monitoring pork freshness. This work provides a universal methodology for constructing NH3 gas sensors with high sensitivity and good humidity resistance and probably extends the application scenarios of MoO3-based sensors in the Internet of Things in the future.

Bridging the Gap-Thermofluidic Designs for Precision Bioelectronics

Bioelectronics, the merging of biology and electronics, can monitor and modulate biological behaviors across length and time scales with unprecedented capability. Current bioelectronics research largely focuses on devices' mechanical properties and electronic designs. However, the thermofluidic control is often overlooked, which is noteworthy given the discipline's importance in almost all bioelectronics processes. It is believed that integrating thermofluidic designs into bioelectronics is essential to align device precision with the complexity of biofluids and biological structures. This perspective serves as a mini roadmap for researchers in both fields to introduce key principles, applications, and challenges in both bioelectronics and thermofluids domains. Important interdisciplinary opportunities for the development of future healthcare devices and precise bioelectronics will also be discussed.

Origin of the Hydrophobic Behaviour of Hydrophilic CeO2

The nature of the hydrophobicity found in rare-earth oxides is intriguing. The CeO2 (100) surface, despite its strongly hydrophilic nature, exhibits hydrophobic behaviour when immersed in water. In order to understand this puzzling and counter-intuitive effect we performed a detailed analysis of the confined water structure and dynamics. We report here an ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation (AIMD) study which demonstrates that the first adsorbed water layer, in immediate contact with the hydroxylated CeO2 surface, generates a hydrophobic interface with respect to the rest of the liquid water. The hydrophobicity is manifested in several ways: a considerable diffusion enhancement of the confined liquid water as compared with bulk water at the same thermodynamic condition, a weak adhesion energy and few H-bonds above the hydrophobic water layer, which may also sustain a water droplet. These findings introduce a new concept in water/rare-earth oxide interfaces: hydrophobicity mediated by specific water patterns on a hydrophilic surface.

Mitigating Contamination with Nanostructure-Enabled Ultraclean Storage

Airborne hydrocarbon contamination hinders nanomanufacturing, limits characterization techniques, and generates controversies regarding fundamental studies of advanced materials; consequently, we urgently need effective and scalable clean storage techniques. In this work, we propose an approach to clean storage using an ultraclean nanotextured storage medium as a getter. Experiments show that our proposed approach can maintain surface cleanliness for more than 1 week and can even passively clean initially contaminated samples during storage. We theoretically analyzed the contaminant adsorption-desorption process with different values of storage medium surface roughness, and our model predictions showed good agreement with experiments for smooth, nanotextured, and hierarchically textured surfaces, providing guidelines for the design of future clean storage systems. The proposed strategy offers a promising approach for portable and cost-effective storage systems that minimize hydrocarbon contamination in applications requiring clean surfaces, including nanofabrication, device storage and transportation, and advanced metrology.

Cerium Oxide and Chondroitin Sulfate Doped Polyurethane Scaffold to Bridge Tendons

Tendon disorders are common medical conditions, which can be greatly debilitating as they are often accompanied by great pain and inflammation. The techniques used nowadays for the treatment of chronic tendon injuries often involve surgery. However, one critical aspect of this procedure involves the scar tissue, characterized by mechanical properties that vary from healthy tissue, rendering the tendons inclined to reinjury or rupture. Synthetic polymers, such as thermoplastic polyurethane, are of special interest in the tissue engineering field as they allow the production of scaffolds with controlled elastic and mechanical properties, which could guarantee an effective support during the new tissue formation. The aim of this work was the design and the development of tubular nanofibrous scaffolds based on thermoplastic polyurethane and enriched with cerium oxide nanoparticles and chondroitin sulfate. The scaffolds were characterized by remarkable mechanical properties, especially when tubular aligned, reaching values comparable to the ones of the native tendons. A weight loss test was performed, suggesting a degradation in prolonged times. In particular, the scaffolds maintained their morphology and also remarkable mechanical properties after 12 weeks of degradation. The scaffolds promoted the cell adhesion and proliferation, in particular when in aligned conformation. Finally, the systems in vivo did not cause any inflammatory effect, representing interesting platforms for the regeneration of injured tendons.

Temperature-Responsive, Femtosecond Laser-Ablated Ceramic Surfaces with Switchable Wettability for On-Demand Droplet Transfer

Reversible wettability transition has drawn substantial interest because of its importance for widespread applications, but facile realization of such transition on ceramic surfaces, which is promising for achieving on-demand droplet manipulation under harsh conditions, remains rare. Herein, superhydrophobic zirconia ceramic surfaces that can reversibly and repeatedly transit between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity after alternate heating treatments have been fabricated using a femtosecond laser. The underlying mechanisms of the complex wettability transitions on the laser-ablated zirconia surfaces are elucidated. Hydrophilic polished zirconia surfaces immediately become superhydrophilic after laser ablation, which is mainly attributed to the amplification effect of the laser-induced micro/nanostructures and has no obvious relationship with oxygen vacancies. The obtained superhydrophilic surfaces are transformed into superhydrophobic surfaces because of rapid adsorption of airborne organic compounds driven mainly by physical interaction under heating conditions. With the alternate removal and re-adsorption of organic compounds, reversible and repeatable wettability transition between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity happens on the zirconia surfaces. The laser-induced micro/nanostructures also contribute to the wettability transitions. Furthermore, utilizing the superhydrophobic zirconia surfaces with switchable wettability, on-demand transfer of strong acid droplet in air and oil droplet under strong acid solution has been achieved. This work will inspire the environmentally friendly fabrication of switchable superhydrophobic ceramic surfaces and their multifunctional applications under harsh conditions.

One-Step Electrochemical Synthesis of AlO x -Passivated Twisted-Phosphorene Nanosheets for Potentially Stable Energy Storage Devices

Black phosphorus (BP), a promising 2D material for electronics, energy storage, catalysis, and sensing, has sparked a research boom. However, exfoliated thin-layered BP is unstable and can easily be degraded under environmental conditions, severely limiting its practical applications. In this context, a simple and cost-effective method has been proposed that involves electrochemically exfoliating BP and simultaneously electrochemically depositing aluminum oxide (AlO _x ) for passivation of the exfoliated BP. The ambient stability of the exfoliated BP is studied using a time-dependent atomic force microscope (AFM). The AlO _x capping layer significantly improves the environmental stability of BP compared to uncapped BP. The thermal stability of the resulting BP is evaluated using power-dependent Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the AlO _x -passivated BP has increased thermal stability, with only a slight shift in peak position toward higher Raman power intensity. These properties can make the material suitable for stable energy storage devices. Interestingly, the electrochemical exfoliation and passivation processes resulted in the BP with a twist angle (9.86°), which is expected to exhibit unique electronic properties similar to those of graphene with a twist angle.

Large-Scale, Abrasion-Resistant, and Solvent-Free Superhydrophobic Objects Fabricated by a Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printing Strategy

Manufacturing abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic matters is challenging due to the fragile feature of the introduced micro-/nanoscale surface roughness. Besides the long-term durability, large scale at meter level, and 3D complex structures are of great importance for the superhydrophobic objects used across diverse industries. Here it is shown that abrasion-resistant, half-a-meter scaled superhydrophobic objects can be one-step realized by the selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing technology using hydrophobic-fumed-silica (HFS)/polymer composite grains. The HFS grains serve as the hydrophobic guests while the sintered polymeric network provides the mechanical strength, leading to low-adhesion, intrinsic superhydrophobic objects with desired 3D structures. It is found that as-printed structures remained anti-wetting capabilities even after undergoing different abrasion tests, including knife cutting test, rude file grinding test, 1000 cycles of sandpaper friction test, tape test and quicksand impacting test, illustrating their abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic stability. This strategy is applied to manufacture a shell of the unmanned aerial vehicle and an abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic shoe, showing the industrial customization of large-scale superhydrophobic objects. The findings thus provide insight for designing intrinsic superhydrophobic objects via the SLS 3D printing strategy that might find use in drag-reduce, anti-fouling, or other industrial fields in harsh operating environments.

Composite TiO2 films modified by CeO2 and SiO2 for the photocatalytic removal of water pollutants

TiO₂ particles of high photocatalytic activity immobilised on various substrates usually suffer from low mechanical stability. This can be overcome by the utilisation of an inorganic binder and/or incorporation in a robust hydrophobic matrix based on rare-earth metal oxides (REOs). Furthermore, intrinsic hydrophobicity of REOs may result in an increased affinity of TiO₂-REOs composites to non-polar aqueous pollutants. Therefore, in the present work, three methods were used for the fabrication of composite TiO₂/CeO₂ films for photocatalytic removal of dye Acid Orange 7 and the herbicide monuron, as representing polar and non-polar pollutants, respectively. In the first method, the composition of a paste containing photoactive TiO₂ particles and CeCl₃ or Ce(NO₃)₃ as CeO₂ precursors was optimised. This paste was deposited on glass by doctor blading. The second method consisted of the deposition of thin layers of CeO₂ by spray coating over a particulate TiO₂ photocatalyst layer (prepared by drop casting or electrophoresis). Both approaches lead to composite films of similar photoactivity that of the pure TiO₂ layer, nevertheless films made by the first approach revealed better mechanical stability. The third method comprised of modifying a particulate TiO₂ film by an overlayer based on colloidal SiO₂ and tetraethoxysilane serving as binders, TiO₂ particles and cerium oxide precursors at varying concentrations. It was found that such an overlayer significantly improved the mechanical properties of the resulting coating. The use of cerium acetylacetonate as a CeO₂ precursor showed only a small increase in photocatalytic activity. On the other hand, deposition of SiO₂/TiO₂ dispersions containing CeO₂ nanoparticles resulted in significant improvement in the rate of photocatalytic removal of the herbicide monuron.

Simultaneously Improved Surface and Bulk Participation of Evolved Perovskite Oxide for Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity Using a Dynamic Cation Exchange Strategy

Perovskite oxides are intriguing electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, but both surface (e.g., composition) and bulk (e.g., lattice oxygen) properties should be optimized to maximize their participation in offering favorable activity and durability. In this work, it is demonstrated that through introducing exogenous Fe³⁺ ( Fe exo 3 + ${\rm{Fe}}_{{\rm{exo}}}^{3 + }$ ) into the liquid electrolyte, not only is the reconstructed surface stabilized and optimized, but the lattice oxygen diffusion is also accelerated. As a result, compared to that in Fe-free 0.1 m KOH, PrBa_0.5 Sr_0.5 Co₂ O_5+δ in 0.1 m KOH + 0.1 mm Fe³⁺ demonstrates a tenfold increment in activity, an extremely low Tafel slope of ≈50 mV dec^-1 , and outstanding stability at 10.0 mA cm^-2  for 10 h. The superior activity and stability are further demonstrated in Zn-air batteries by presenting high open-circuit voltage, narrow potential gap, high power output, and long-term cycle stability (500 cycles). Based on experimental and theoretical calculations, it is discovered that the dynamical interaction between the Co hydr(oxy)oxide from surface reconstruction and intentional Fe³⁺ from the electrolyte plays an important role in the enhanced activity and durability, while the generation of a perovskite-hydr(oxy)oxide heterostructure improves the lattice oxygen diffusion to facilitate lattice oxygen participation and enhances the stability.

Cerium oxide thin films: synthesis, characterization, photocatalytic activity and influence on microbial growth

The resistance of surfaces to biofouling remains a significant advantage for optical devices working in natural conditions, increasing their lifetime and reducing maintenance costs. This paper reports on the functionalities of transparent CeO₂ thin films with thicknesses between 25 and 600 nm deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering on the glass substrate. The CeO₂ photocatalytic performance exhibited an efficiency of 30% on imidacloprid degradation under 6 h of UV radiation and increased linearly with the irradiation time, suggesting a complete degradation within 48 h. The films did not alter the growth rate of the green algae Chlorella vulgaris after 72 h short-term exposure. The tested CeO₂ films proved to efficiently inhibit with high efficiency the Staphylococcus aureus biofilms and planktonic growth (reducing the counts of bacterial cells by 2 to 8 logs), demonstrating the promising potential of these materials for obtaining antimicrobial and antibiofilm surfaces, with broad applications for the biomedical, ecological and industrial fields.

Sulfate mineral scaling: From fundamental mechanisms to control strategies

Sulfate scaling, as insoluble inorganic sulfate deposits, can cause serious operational problems in various industries, such as blockage of membrane pores and subsurface media and impairment of equipment functionality. There is limited article to bridge sulfate formation mechanisms with field scaling control practice. This article reviews the molecular-level interfacial reactions and thermodynamic basis controlling homogeneous and heterogeneous sulfate mineral nucleation and growth through classical and non-classical pathways. Common sulfate scaling control strategies were also reviewed, including pretreatment, chemical inhibition and surface modification. Furthermore, efforts were made to link the fundamental theories with industrial scale control practices. Effects of common inhibitors on different steps of sulfate formation pathways (i.e., ion pair and cluster formation, nucleation, and growth) were thoroughly discussed. Surface modifications to industrial facilities and membrane units were clarified as controlling either the deposition of homogeneous precipitates or the heterogeneous nucleation. Future research directions in terms of optimizing sulfate chemical inhibitor design and improving surface modifications are also discussed. This article aims to keep the readers abreast of the latest development in mechanistic understanding and control strategies of sulfate scale formation and to bridge knowledge developed in interfacial chemistry with engineering practice.

Influence of CeO2 and TiO2 Particles on Physicochemical Properties of Composite Nickel Coatings Electrodeposited at Ambient Temperature

The Ni-TiO2 and Ni-CeO2 composite coatings with varying hydrophilic/hydrophobic characteristics were fabricated by the electrodeposition method from a tartrate electrolyte at ambient temperature. To meet the requirements of tight regulation by the European Chemicals Agency classifying H3BO3 as a substance of very high concern, Rochelle salt was utilized as a buffer solution instead. The novelty of this study was to implement a simple one-step galvanostatic electrodeposition from the low-temperature electrolyte based on a greener buffer compared to traditionally used, aiming to obtain new types of soft-matrix Ni, Ni-CeO2, and Ni-TiO2 coatings onto steel or copper substrates. The surface characteristics of electrodeposited nickel composites were evaluated by SEM, EDS, surface contact angle measurements, and XPS. Physiochemical properties of pure Ni, Ni-CeO2, and Ni-TiO2 composites, namely, wear resistance, microhardness, microroughness, and photocatalytic activity, were studied. Potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, and ICP-MS analyses were employed to study the long-term corrosion behavior of coatings in a 0.5 M NaCl solution. Superior photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, 96.2% after 6 h of illumination, was achieved in the case of Ni-TiO2 composite, while no substantial change in the photocatalytic behavior of the Ni-CeO2 compared to pure Ni was observed. Both composites demonstrated higher hardness and wear resistance than pure Ni. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing TiO2 as a photocatalytic hydrophilicity promoter in the fabrication of composite coatings for various applications.

Selective Fabrication of Robust and Multifunctional Super Nonwetting Surfaces by Diverse Modifications of Zirconia-Ceria Nanocomposites

The creation of surfaces with various super nonwetting properties is an ongoing challenge. We report diverse modifications of novel synthesized zirconia-ceria nanocomposites by different low surface energy agents to fabricate nanofluids capable of regulating surface wettability of mineral substrates to achieve selective superhydrophobic, superoleophobic-superhydrophilic, and superamphiphobic conditions. Surfaces treated with these nanofluids offer self-cleaning properties and effortless rolling-off behavior with sliding angles ≤7° for several liquids with surface tensions between 26 and 72.1 mN/m. The superamphiphobic nanofluid coating imparts nonstick properties to a solid surface whereby liquid drops can be effortlessly displaced on the coating with a near-zero tilt and conveniently lifted off using a needle tip, leaving no trace. Further, the superamphiphobic surface demonstrates good oil repellency toward ultralow surface tension liquids such as n-hexane and n-heptane. The superoleophobic-superhydrophilic surface repels oil droplets well regardless of whether it is in the air or underwater conditions. In addition, reaping the benefits of the ZrO₂-CeO₂ nanocomposites' photocatalysis feature, the superoleophobic-superhydrophilic coating exhibits self-cleaning ability by the degradation of color dyes. Modification of the wettability of substrates is carried out by a cost-effective and facile solution-immersion approach, which creates surfaces with hierarchical nano-submicron-scaled structures. The multipurpose coated surfaces have outstanding durability and mechanical stability. They also resist well high-temperature-high-pressure conditions, which will provide various practical applications in different fields, including the condensate banking removal in gas reservoirs or the separation of oil/water mixtures.

Review of droplet dynamics and dropwise condensation enhancement: Theory, experiments and applications

Droplet dynamics and condensation phenomena are widespread in nature and industrial applications, and the fundamentals of various technological applications. Currently, with the rapid development of interfacial materials, microfluidics, micro/nano fabrication technology, as well as the intersection of fluid mechanics, interfacial mechanics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics and other disciplines, the preparation and design of various novel functional surfaces have contributed to the local modulation of droplets (including nucleation, jumping and directional migration) and the improvement of condensation heat transfer, further deepening the understanding of relevant mechanisms. The wetting and dynamic characteristics of droplets involve complex solid-liquid interfacial interactions, so that the local modulation of microdroplets and the extension of enhanced condensation heat transfer by means of complex micro/nano structures and hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties is one of the current hot topics in heat and mass transfer research. This work presents a detailed review of several scientific issues related to the droplet dynamics and dropwise condensation heat transfer under the influence of multiple factors (including fluid property, surface structure, wettability, temperature external field, etc.). Firstly, the basic theory of droplet wetting on the solid wall is introduced, and the mechanism of solid-liquid interfacial interaction involving droplet jumping and directional migration on the functional surfaces under the various influencing factors is discussed. Optimizing the surface structure for the local modulation of droplets is of guidance for condensation heat transfer. Secondly, we summarize the existing theoretical models of dropwise condensation applicable to various functional surfaces and briefly outline the current numerical models for simulating dropwise condensation at different scales, as well as the fabricating techniques of coatings and functional surfaces for enhancing heat transfer. Finally, the relevant problems and challenges are summarized and future research is discussed.

Evaluating Nanoparticle Hydrophobicity Using Analytical Membrane Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography

Nanoparticle hydrophobicity is a key factor controlling the stability, adhesion, and transport of nanoparticle suspensions. Although a number of approaches have been presented for evaluating nanoparticle hydrophobicity, these methods are difficult to apply to larger nanoparticles and viruses (>100 nm in size) that are of increasing importance in drug delivery and gene therapy. This study investigated the use of a new analytical hydrophobic interaction chromatography method employing a 5.0 μm pore size polyvinylidene fluoride membrane as the stationary-phase in membrane hydrophobic interaction chromatography (MHIC). Experimental data obtained using a series of model proteins were in good agreement with literature values for the hydrophobicity (both experimental and computational). MHIC was then used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of a variety of nanoparticles, including a live attenuated viral vaccine, both in water and in the presence of different surfactants. This new method can be implemented on any liquid chromatography system, run times are typically <20 min, and the experiments avoid the use of organic solvents that could alter the structure of many biological nanoparticles.

Humidity-Tolerant Chemiresistive Gas Sensors Based on Hydrophobic CeO2/SnO2 Heterostructure Films

The accelerated evolution of the Internet of Things has brought new challenges to the gas sensors, which are required to work persistently under harsh conditions, like high humidity. However, currently, it is quite challenging to solve the hindrance of the trade-off between gas-sensing performance and anti-humidity ability of the chemiresistive gas sensors. Herein, hydrophobic inorganic CeO₂/SnO₂ heterostructure films were prepared by depositing the CeO₂ layers with a thickness of a few nanometers onto the SnO₂ film via a magnetron sputtering method. The sensors based on the CeO₂/SnO₂ heterostructure films demonstrated excellent gas-sensing performance toward trimethylamine (TEA) with high response, wide detection range (0.04-500 ppm), low record detection limit (0.04 ppm), ideal reproducibility, and long-term stability, while concurrently possessing promising anti-humidity ability. A portable, wireless TEA-sensing system containing the CeO₂/SnO₂ sensor was constructed to realize the real-time monitoring of trace concentration of the volatiles released from a fish. This work provides a novel strategy to prepare advanced chemiresistive gas sensors for humidity-independent detection of harmful gases and vapors and will accelerate their commercialization process in the field of food safety and public health.

Effects of the Deposition Mode and Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Wettability of Y2O3 Coatings Prepared by Reactive Magnetron Sputtering

A robust hydrophobic Y2O3 coating at high temperatures is important for industrial applications. In this study, Y2O3 thin films on Si substrates were prepared by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering. By changing the deposition power, Y2O3 thin films with different microstructures were obtained in poison mode and metallic mode, respectively. In order to understand the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and hydrophobicity of Y2O3, the samples were annealed at 400 °C in the air. Compared to metallic mode, no crack was formed on the surface of the Y2O3 film prepared in poison mode. In addition, the water contact angle on the surface of the Y2O3 thin film deposited in poison mode was above 90° before and after annealing at 400 °C. It has been demonstrated that the initial high concentration of physically absorbed oxygen and its slow desorption process in a Y2O3 thin film prepared in poison mode contributes to the hydrophobicity of the thin film at high temperatures. These results can provide insights into the large-scale fabrication of hydrophobic Y2O3 coatings for high-temperature applications.

UV Curable Robust Durable Hydrophobic Coating Based on Epoxy Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (EP-POSS) and Their Derivatives

Hydrophobic coatings have considerable potential applications in many fields. Ease of operation and high durability are essential for practical use. Fast curing and being solvent-free are a plus, and if they possess certain characteristics (antigraffiti, good adhesion, high hardness, heat resistance, wide range of applicability, etc.) at the same time, it is a dream solution. Herein, a facile one-step approach with the above features was reported for a UV curable robust hydrophobic coating based on Epoxy Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (EP-POSSs). The structure and surface morphology of these EP-POSSs and their derivatives were systematically studied. Because of the core-in-cage structure which was constructed by repeating units of R-Si(O_1/2)₃ and the strong covalent bonds of Si-C and Si-O, the coatings displayed high pencil hardness (6-8H), high thermal stability with initial decomposition temperature around 350-400 °C, and a high water contact angle (up to 108.06°) even after outdoor exposure for a month. These POSSs and their derivatives are expected to find uses in various applications such as stain resistance, self-cleaning, scratch resistance, and cigarette moxibustion resistance of wood furniture, kitchenware, and medical and industrial appliances.

Puffing ultrathin oxides with nonlayered structures

Two-dimensional (2D) oxides have unique electrical, optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties, which are promising for a wide range of applications in different fields. However, it is difficult to fabricate most oxides as 2D materials unless they have a layered structure. Here, we present a facile strategy for the synthesis of ultrathin oxide nanosheets using a self-formed sacrificial template of carbon layers by taking advantage of the Maillard reaction and violent redox reaction between glucose and ammonium nitrate. To date, 36 large-area ultrathin oxides (with thickness ranging from ~1.5 to ~4 nm) have been fabricated using this method, including rare-earth oxides, transition metal oxides, III-main group oxides, II-main group oxides, complex perovskite oxides, and high-entropy oxides. In particular, the as-obtained perovskite oxides exhibit great electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction in an alkaline solution. This facile, universal, and scalable strategy provides opportunities to study the properties and applications of atomically thin oxide nanomaterials.

A Lipid-Inspired Highly Adhesive Interface for Durable Superhydrophobicity in Wet Environments and Stable Jumping Droplet Condensation

Creating thin (<100 nm) hydrophobic coatings that are durable in wet conditions remains challenging. Although the dropwise condensation of steam on thin hydrophobic coatings can enhance condensation heat transfer by 1000%, these coatings easily delaminate. Designing interfaces with high adhesion while maintaining a nanoscale coating thickness is key to overcoming this challenge. In nature, cell membranes face this same challenge where nanometer-thick lipid bilayers achieve high adhesion in wet environments to maintain integrity. Nature ensures this adhesion by forming a lipid interface having two nonpolar surfaces, demonstrating high physicochemical resistance to biofluids attempting to open the interface. Here, developing an artificial lipid-like interface that utilizes fluorine-carbon molecular chains can achieve durable nanometric hydrophobic coatings. The application of our approach to create a superhydrophobic material shows high stability during jumping-droplet-enhanced condensation as quantified from a continual one-year steam condensation experiment. The jumping-droplet condensation enhanced condensation heat transfer coefficient up to 400% on tube samples when compared to filmwise condensation on bare copper. Our bioinspired materials design principle can be followed to develop many durable hydrophobic surfaces using alternate substrate-coating pairs, providing stable hydrophobicity or superhydrophobicity to a plethora of applications.

Design of Organic-Free Superhydrophobic TiO2 with Ultraviolet Stability or Ultraviolet-Induced Switchable Wettability

Superhydrophobic TiO₂ with great application potential is mainly obtained by surface modification with low surface energy organics, which is easily degraded under sunlight irradiation, which results in the loss of superhydrophobic properties. Herein, we developed a room-temperature pulsed chemical vapor deposition (pulsed CVD) method to develop amorphous TiO₂-deposited TiO₂ nanoparticles. The ultraviolet stability/ultraviolet-induced reversible wettability switch had been simultaneously realized by different and controllable deposition cycles of amorphous TiO₂. The superhydrophobic properties of the organic-free TiO₂ were determined by the micrometer-nanometer-sub-nanometer multiscale structure, the multiscale pore structure, and the large Young's contact angle resulting from carboxylic acid adsorption. Also, we found that the adsorption rate and adsorption stability of oxygen and water at the surface oxygen vacancies were the key to facilitate the reversible switching between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic states, which was well demonstrated by experimental characterization and theoretical simulation. In addition, we also found that the resistance of dense amorphous TiO₂ films on the TiO₂ surface to the migration of photogenerated electrons and holes was the key to maintain the stable superhydrophobic properties of superhydrophobic TiO₂ under ultraviolet illumination. The powders were strongly ground and the coating surface was rubbed on the surface of the sandpaper, which still maintained superhydrophobic properties, providing favorable conditions for the application of superhydrophobic TiO₂. This work modulates the ultraviolet stability and dark/ultraviolet-induced switchable superhydrophobicity/superhydrophilicity of coated TiO₂ by simply adjusting the number of deposition times in a pulsed CVD process for the first time, thus contributing to the development of organic-free superhydrophobic TiO₂.

Synergistic approach to simultaneously improve response and humidity-independence of metal-oxide gas sensors

The chemiresistive response of metal-oxide gas sensors depends on ambient conditions. Humidity is a strongly influential parameter and causes large deviations in signals and, consequently, an inaccurate detection of target gases. Developing sensors unaffected by humidity, as documented by extensive works of research, comes at the cost of response - a significant drop in sensor response inevitably accompanies an increase in humidity-independence. This trade-off between humidity-independence and gas response is one of the major obstacles that limit practical applications of metal-oxide gas sensors. This study presents a novel approach to improve both the features by incorporating the rare-earth element, yttrium, into the host SnO₂ sensor. The Y-doped SnO₂ nanofibers are highly stable across relative humidity values ranging from 0% to 87%, and show improved selectivity and sensitivity in the detection of up to 20 ppb of NO₂ target gas with the limit of detection at 103.71 ppt. Based on experimental results and van der Waals (vdW)-corrected DFT calculations, these improvements can be attributed to the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancy created by the introduction of aliovalent Y and the formation of Y₂O₃ nanoparticles that play a critical role in making the sensor surface hydrophobic.

Exploiting Molecular Dynamics in Composite Coatings to Design Robust Super-Repellent Surfaces

Fluorinated motifs are promising for the engineering of repellent coatings, however, a fundamental understanding of how to effectively bind these motifs to various substrates is required to improve their stability in different use scenarios. Herein, the binding of fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) using a cyanoacrylate glue (binder) is computationally and experimentally evaluated. The composite POSS-binder coatings display ultralow surface energy (≈10 mJ m-2 ), while still having large surface adhesions to substrates (300-400 nN), highlighting that super-repellent coatings (contact angles >150°) can be readily generated with this composite approach. Importantly, the coatings show super-repellency to both corrosive liquids (e.g., 98 wt% H2 SO4 ) and ultralow surface tension liquids (e.g., alcohols), with ultralow roll-off angles (<5°), and tunable resistance to liquid penetration. Additionally, these coatings demonstrate the potential in effective cargo loading and robust self-cleaning properties, where experimental datasets are correlated with both relevant theoretical predictions and systematic all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of the repellent coatings. This work not only holds promise for chemical shielding, heat transfer, and liquid manipulations but offers a facile yet robust pathway for engineering advanced coatings by effectively combining components for their mutually desired properties.

Temporal Evolution of Surface Contamination under Ultra-high Vacuum

Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) is essential to many surface characterization techniques and is often applied with the intention of reducing exposure to airborne contaminants. Surface contamination under UHV is not well-understood, however, and introduces uncertainty in surface elemental characterization or hinders surface-sensitive manufacturing approaches. In this work, we investigated the time-dependent surface composition of gold samples with different initial levels of contamination under UHV over a period of 24 h with both experiments and physical modeling. Our results show that surface hydrocarbon concentration under UHV can be explained by molecular adsorption-desorption competition theory. Gold surfaces that were initially pristine adsorbed hydrocarbons over time under UHV; conversely, surfaces that were initially heavily contaminated desorbed hydrocarbons over time. During both adsorption and desorption, the concentration of contaminants tended toward the same equilibrium value. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the temporal evolution of surface contamination under UHV and highlights routes to mitigate surface contamination effects.

The apparent surface free energy of rare earth oxides is governed by hydrocarbon adsorption

The surface free energy of rare earth oxides (REOs) has been debated during the last decade, with some reporting REOs to be intrinsically hydrophilic and others reporting hydrophobic. Here, we investigate the wettability and surface chemistry of pristine and smooth REO surfaces, conclusively showing that hydrophobicity stems from wettability transition due to volatile organic compound adsorption. We show that, for indoor ambient atmospheres and well-controlled saturated hydrocarbon atmospheres, the apparent advancing and receding contact angles of water increase with exposure time. We examined the surfaces comprehensively with multiple surface analysis techniques to confirm hydrocarbon adsorption and correlate it to wettability transition mechanisms. We demonstrate that both physisorption and chemisorption occur on the surface, with chemisorbed hydrocarbons promoting further physisorption due to their high affinity with similar hydrocarbon molecules. A Materials Science Perspective of Midstream Challenges in the Utilization of Heavy Crude Oil

An increasing global population and a sharply upward trajectory of per capita energy consumption continue to drive the demand for fossil fuels, which remain integral to energy grids and the global transportation infrastructure. The oil and gas industry is increasingly reliant on unconventional deposits such as heavy crude oil and bitumen for reasons of accessibility, scale, and geopolitics. Unconventional deposits such as the Canadian Oil Sands in Northern Alberta contain more than one-third of the world's viscous oil reserves and are vital linchpins to meet the energy needs of rapidly industrializing populations. Heavy oil is typically recovered from subsurface deposits using thermal recovery approaches such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). In this perspective article, we discuss several aspects of materials science challenges in the utilization of heavy crude oil with an emphasis on the needs of the Canadian Oil Sands. In particular, we discuss surface modification and materials' design approaches essential to operations under extreme environments of high temperatures and pressures and the presence of corrosive species. The demanding conditions for materials and surfaces are directly traceable to the high viscosity, low surface tension, and substantial sulfur content of heavy crude oil, which necessitates extensive energy-intensive thermal processes, warrants dilution/emulsification to ease the flow of rheologically challenging fluids, and engenders the need to protect corrodible components. Geopolitical reasons have further led to a considerable geographic separation between extraction sites and advanced refineries capable of processing heavy oils to a diverse slate of products, thus necessitating a massive midstream infrastructure for transportation of these rheologically challenging fluids. Innovations in fluid handling, bitumen processing, and midstream transportation are critical to the economic viability of heavy oil. Here, we discuss foundational principles, recent technological advancements, and unmet needs emphasizing candidate solutions for thermal insulation, membrane-assisted separations, corrosion protection, and midstream bitumen transportation. This perspective seeks to highlight illustrative materials' technology developments spanning the range from nanocomposite coatings and cement sheaths for thermal insulation to the utilization of orthogonal wettability to engender separation of water-oil emulsions stabilized by endogenous surfactants extracted during SAGD, size-exclusion membranes for fractionation of bitumen, omniphobic coatings for drag reduction in pipelines and to ease oil handling in containers, solid prills obtained from partial bitumen solidification to enable solid-state transport with reduced risk of damage from spills, and nanocomposite coatings incorporating multiple modes of corrosion inhibition. Future outlooks for onsite partial upgradation are also described, which could potentially bypass the use of refineries for some fractions, enable access to a broader cross-section of refineries, and enable a new distributed chemical manufacturing paradigm.

Quantitative Determination of the Hydrophobicity of Nanoparticles

The hydrophobicity of nanoparticles (NPs) is one of the most important physicochemical properties that determines their agglomeration state under various environmental conditions. When studying nano-bio interactions, it is found that the hydrophobicity of NPs plays a predominant role in mediating the biological response and toxicity of the NPs. Although many methods have been developed to qualitatively or quantitatively determine hydrophobicity, there is not yet a scientific consensus on the standard of characterizing the hydrophobicity of NPs. We have developed a novel optical method, called the maximum particle dispersion (MPD), for quantitatively characterizing the hydrophobicity of NPs. The principle of measurement of the MPD method lies in the control of the aggregation state of the NPs via manipulating the van der Waals interactions between NPs across a dispersion liquid. We have scrutinized the mechanism of the MPD method using a combination of dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy and further verified the MPD method using a completely independent dye adsorption method. The MPD method demonstrated great promise to be developed into an easy-to-use and cost-effective method for quantitatively characterizing the hydrophobicity of NPs.

Robust Hydrophobic Materials by Surface Modification in Transition-Metal Diborides

Exploring the hydrophobicity of robust conductors is significant for electronic devices to simultaneously be used in a wet environment and extreme conditions. However, a combination of conductivity, strong mechanical properties, and hydrophobicity in one material is hindered by the inherent features of the materials. A new kind of robust hydrophobic conductor is designed in transition-metal diborides (TMdBs: TiB₂, ZrB₂, and HfB₂) to break through this challenge. The results calculated by density functional theory indicate that high hardness comes from high shear and bulk modulus, which is consistent with experimental results (TiB₂, 25.0 GPa; ZrB₂, 17.5 GPa; HfB₂, 21.5 GPa). The theoretical calculated results reveal that edge sides have a lower surface energy than basal plane (001) in TMdBs. Hence, the edge sides are exposed with a needle-like morphology in TMdBs. Moreover, needle-like surfaces exhibiting hydrophobicity have water contact angles of 132.0° (TiB₂), 116.8° (ZrB₂), and 114.0° (HfB₂). The hydrophobicity arises from a lower surface free energy of edge sides in TMdBs and a rough surface that reduces the contact area of water and a solid. This work develops a new kind of robust functional material in TMdBs.

Superelastic and Fire-Retardant Nano-/Microfibrous Sponges for High-Efficiency Warmth Retention

Warmth retention equipment for personal cold protection is highly demanded in freezing weather; however, most present warmth retention materials suffer from high thermal conductivity, weak mechanical properties, and strong flammability, resulting in serious security risks. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate nano-/microfibrous sponges with superelasticity, robust flame retardation, and effective warmth retention performance via direct electrospinning. The three-dimensional fluffy sponges with low volume density and high porosity are constructed by accurately regulating the relative humidity; meanwhile, the mechanically robust polyamide-imide nanofibers with high limit oxygen index (LOI) are innovatively introduced to improve the structural stability and flammability of the nano-/microfibrous sponges. Strikingly, the developed nano-/microfibrous sponges exhibit ultralight characteristics (6.9 mg cm^-3), superelasticity (∼0% plastic deformation after 100 compression tests), effective flame retardant with LOI of 26.2%, and good heat preservation ability (thermal conductivity of 24.6 mW m^-1 K^-1). This work may shed light on designing superelastic and flame-retardant warmth retention materials for various applications.

PTFE/EP Reinforced MOF/SiO2 Composite as a Superior Mechanically Robust Superhydrophobic Agent towards Corrosion Protection, Self-Cleaning and Anti-Icing

Organic resin cross-linking ZIF-67/SiO₂ superhydrophobic (SHPB) multilayer coating was successfully fabricated on metal substrate. The perfluoro-octyl-triethoxy silane (POTS) modified ZIF-67 and SiO₂ coating was applied on primary coated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and epoxy resin (EP) via spray coating method. Here, we present that the robust superhydrophobicity can be realized by structuring surfaces at two different length scales, with a nanostructure design to provide water repellence and a microstructure design to provide durability. The as-fabricated multilayer coating displayed superior water-repellence (CA=167.4°), chemical robustness (pH=1-14) and mechanical durability undergoing 120th linear abrasion or 35th rotatory abrasion cycle. By applying different acidic and basic corrosive media and various weathering conditions, it can still maintain superior-hydrophobicity. To get a better insight of interaction between inhibitor molecules and metal surface, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed, showing lower energy gap and increased binding energy of ZPS/SiO₂ /PTFE/EP (ZPS=ZIF-67+POTS) multilayer coating compared to the ZIF-67/SiO₂ /PTFE/EP, thereby supporting the experimental findings. Additionally, such coatings may be useful for applications such as anti-corrosion, self-cleaning, and anti-icing multi-functionalities.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic SA-CeO2@Cu Mesh and Its Application in Oil-Water Separation

CeO₂ was synthesized by the co-precipitation method on the Cu mesh substrate and modified the surface of CeO₂@Cu mesh by stearic acid (SA). The superhydrophobic behavior was ascribed to the combination of hierarchical micro-nanostructure of CeO₂ and the hydrophobic alkyl groups from SA. The SA-CeO₂@Cu mesh had antiacid and base stability and excellent durability as well as high separation efficiency. The separation efficiency can be up to 98.0% after separating 30 times.
