Modulation of the isomerization of iminothioindoxyl switches by supramolecular confinement

Here we present the formation of an iminothioindoxyl (ITI)⊂Cage complex that retains the photochemical properties of the photoswitch within a confined environment in water. At the same time, besides ultrafast switching inside the cage, the ITI photoswitch displays an intriguing bifurcation of the excited state isomerization pathway when encapsulated.

Multi-Colored Aqueous Ink for Rewritable Paper

As sustainable and eco-friendly replacements to conventional paper, rewritable paper is a very attractive alternative for communication, information circulation, and storage. Development is made for rewritable paper using chromogenic materials that change its color in presence of external stimuli. However, the new techniques have faced several major challenges including feasible operational method, eco-friendly approach. Herein, a simple, convenient, and eco-friendly strategy is described for the preparation of rewritable paper substrate, and multi colored ink for efficient use in writing, painting or printing purpose. In addition, writing with "invisible ink" on the rewritable paper can be realized for potential anti-counterfeiting application. The written, painted, or printed information on the paper substrate can be easily erased using an aqueous solution. Thus, the original paper can be retrieved and the paper substrate can be reused multiple times. Besides, the written or printed information can be retained for a prolonged time at ambient conditions. Overall, this approach shows the rewritable paper as a prototype of multicolor writing/painting application, offering a sustainable solution for reducing paper waste and promoting environmental stewardship.

Photoswitching the fluorescence of nanoparticles for advanced optical applications

The dynamic optical response properties and the distinct features of nanomaterials make photoswitchable fluorescent nanoparticles (PF NPs) attractive candidates for advanced optical applications. Over the past few decades, the design of PF NPs by coupling photochromic and fluorescent motifs at the nanoscale has been actively pursued, and substantial efforts have been made to exploit their potential applications. In this perspective, we critically summarize various design principles for fabricating these PF NPs. Then, we discuss their distinct optical properties from different aspects by highlighting the capability of NPs in fabricating new, robust photoswitch systems. Afterwards, we introduce the pivotal role of PF NPs in advanced optical applications, including sensing, anti-counterfeiting and imaging. Finally, current challenges and future development of PF NPs are briefly discussed.

Amplifying dual-visible-light photoswitching in aqueous media via confinement promoted triplet-triplet energy transfer

Achieving visible-light photochromism is a long-term goal of chemists keen to exploit the opportunities of molecular photoswitches in multi-disciplinary research studies. Triplet-sensitization offers a flexible approach to building diverse visible-light photoswitches using existing photochromic scaffolds, circumventing the need for sophisticated molecular design and synthesis. Unfortunately, distance-dependence and environment-sensitivity of triplet-excited species remain as key challenges that severely impair sensitization efficiency and limit their practical availability. We present herein a nature-inspired nanoconfinement strategy in which a triplet-sensitized visible-light photoswitch/sensitizer system is assembled into nanoconfined micelles (d ∼ 40 nm). A ca. 10-fold efficiency increase of triplet-triplet energy transfer for photochromism as well as an amplified fluorescence on/off contrast upon bi-directional visible-light excitation (470/560 nm) was achieved in full aqueous media. By virtue of this, the hybrid photoswitchable system is successfully applied for both flash information encryption and multiple dynamic cell imaging assays, further proving its versatility in materials and life science.

Solvation-Tuned Photoacid as a Stable Light-Driven pH Switch for CO2 Capture and Release

Photoacids are organic molecules that release protons under illumination, providing spatiotemporal control of the pH. Such light-driven pH switches offer the ability to cyclically alter the pH of the medium and are highly attractive for a wide variety of applications, including CO2 capture. Although photoacids such as protonated merocyanine can enable fully reversible pH cycling in water, they have a limited chemical stability against hydrolysis (<24 h). Moreover, these photoacids have low solubility, which limits the pH-switching ability in a buffered solution such as dissolved CO2. In this work, we introduce a simple pathway to dramatically increase stability and solubility of photoacids by tuning their solvation environment in binary solvent mixtures. We show that a preferential solvation of merocyanine by aprotic solvent molecules results in a 60% increase in pH modulation magnitude when compared to the behavior in pure water and can withstand stable cycling for >350 h. Our results suggest that a very high stability of merocyanine photoacids can be achieved in the right solvent mixtures, offering a way to bypass complex structural modifications of photoacid molecules and serving as the key milestone toward their application in a photodriven CO2 capture process.

Programmable Dynamic Information Storage Composite Film with Highly Sensitive Thermochromism and Gradually Adjustable Fluorescence

The development of an integrated material system capable of effectively organizing and combining multisource information, such as dynamic pigmentary, structural, and fluorescent colors, is significant and challenging. Achieving such programmable dynamic information storage can considerably enhance the diversity and security of information deliveries. Here, a polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal system with highly temperature-sensitive structural color and light-sensitive pigmentary and fluorescence colors is presented. The prepared cholesteric liquid crystals (clcs) can reversibly change their structural color from red to blue within variational 3 °C near room temperature, and exhibit a gradually adjustable fluorescence which can transform from blue to pink and finally to bright red. All this dynamic information is programmable and tailored, hundreds of thousands of (>540 000) pattern combinations can easily be achieved by optical writing with a "bagua" pattern photomask. Therefore, if the corresponding code combinations to the pattern are assigned particular meanings, encrypted transmission of information with very high security can be achieved by utilizing applicable information encoding tables and decryption rules.

Large-Area Rewritable Paper Based on Polyurethane Inverse Photonic Glass with Durable High-Resolution Information Storage and Structural Stability

To alleviate the negative effects of resource waste and environmental pollution caused by the excessive use of paper, technologies for rewritable paper have received widespread attention and in-depth research. Despite the growing interest in rewritable paper, meeting the requirements of large-scale preparation, long-lasting information storage time, high reversibility, and good environmental stability remains a huge challenge for this technology. This study developed a solvent-responsive copolymerized polyurethane-based rewritable paper with an inverse photonic glass structure (co-PUIPG paper). Comprehensive writing modes, including handwriting, spraying, and printing, were realized by using the swelling effect of different solvents and the local force field formed by capillary force to control the deformation degree of the inverse photonic glass structure. Co-PUIPG paper can persistently store high-resolution information and has a green and environmentally friendly "write-erase" method. Meanwhile, it exhibits good rewritability, as well as high mechanical strength and exceptional resistance to environmental factors, such as friction, high temperature, and sunlight. Because the spraying method can prepare templates quickly and extensively and polyurethane materials are economical, co-PUIPG rewritable paper possesses great potential as a substitute for commercial fiber paper and its industrialization is full of great possibilities.

Adaptive and Ultrahigh-Affinity Recognition in Water by Sulfated Conjugated Corral[5]arene

The pursuit of synthetic receptors with high binding affinities has long been a central focus in supramolecular chemistry, driven by their significant practical relevance in various fields. Despite the numerous synthetic receptors that have been developed, most exhibit binding affinities in the micromolar range or lower. Only a few exceptional receptors achieve binding affinities exceeding 109  M-1 , and their substrate scopes remain rather limited. In this context, we introduce SC[5]A, a conjugated corral-shaped macrocycle functionalized with ten sulfate groups. Owing to its deep one-dimensional confined hydrophobic cavity and multiple sulfate groups, SC[5]A displays an extraordinarily high binding strength of up to 1011  M-1 towards several size-matched, rod-shaped organic dications in water. Besides, its conformation exhibits good adaptability, allowing it to encapsulate a wide range of other guests with diverse molecular sizes, shapes, and functionalities, exhibiting relatively strong affinities (Ka =106 -108  M-1 ). Additionally, we've explored the preliminary application of SC[5]A in alleviating blood coagulation induced by hexadimethrine bromide in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, the combination of ultrahigh binding affinities (towards complementary guests) and adaptive recognition capability (towards a wide range of functional guests) of SC[5]A positions it as exceptionally valuable for numerous practical applications.

Cavity-Shape-Dependent Divergent Chemical Reaction inside Aqueous Pd6L4 Cages

Chemical reactions inside the confined pockets of enzyme-mimicking hosts, such as cages and macrocycles, have been an emerging field of interest over the past decade. Although many such reactions are known, the use of such cages toward the divergent synthesis of nonisomeric products has not been well explored. Divergent synthesis is a technique of forming two or more distinct products from the same reagents by changing the catalyst or reaction conditions. Changing the shape of the cage can also change the nature and magnitude of the host-guest interactions. Thus, is it possible for such changes to cause differences in the reaction pathways leading to formation of nonisomeric products? Herein, we report a divergent chemical transformation of anthrone [anthracen-9(10H)-one] inside different water-soluble M6L4 cages. When anthrone was encapsulated inside a newly synthesized M6L4 octahedral cage 1, it dimerized to form dianthrone [9,9'-bianthracen-10,10'(9H,9'H)-dione]. In contrast, when the same chemical reaction was performed inside a M6L4 double-square shaped cage 2, it was oxidized to form anthraquinone [anthracene-9,10-dione]. Similar results were obtained with a different set of isomeric aqueous Pd6 cages 3a (octahedral cage) and 3b (double-square cage), indicating the dependence of the shape of cavity on the divergent synthesis. The present report demonstrates a unique example of different outcomes/results of a reaction depending on the shape of the molecular container, which was driven by the host-guest interactions and the preorganization of the substrates.

Breaking the photoswitch speed limit

The forthcoming generation of materials, including artificial muscles, recyclable and healable systems, photochromic heterogeneous catalysts, or tailorable supercapacitors, relies on the fundamental concept of rapid switching between two or more discrete forms in the solid state. Herein, we report a breakthrough in the "speed limit" of photochromic molecules on the example of sterically-demanding spiropyran derivatives through their integration within solvent-free confined space, allowing for engineering of the photoresponsive moiety environment and tailoring their photoisomerization rates. The presented conceptual approach realized through construction of the spiropyran environment results in ~1000 times switching enhancement even in the solid state compared to its behavior in solution, setting a record in the field of photochromic compounds. Moreover, integration of two distinct photochromic moieties in the same framework provided access to a dynamic range of rates as well as complementary switching in the material's optical profile, uncovering a previously inaccessible pathway for interstate rapid photoisomerization.

Guest Encapsulation Alters the Thermodynamic Landscape of a Coordination Host

The architecture of self-assembled host molecules can profoundly affect the properties of the encapsulated guests. For example, a rigid cage with small windows can efficiently protect its contents from the environment; in contrast, tube-shaped, flexible hosts with large openings and an easily accessible cavity are ideally suited for catalysis. Here, we report a "Janus" nature of a Pd6L4 coordination host previously reported to exist exclusively as a tube isomer (T). We show that upon encapsulating various tetrahedrally shaped guests, T can reconfigure into a cage-shaped host (C) in quantitative yield. Extracting the guest affords empty C, which is metastable and spontaneously relaxes to T, and the T⇄C interconversion can be repeated for multiple cycles. Reversible toggling between two vastly different isomers paves the way toward controlling functional properties of coordination hosts "on demand".

Photo-Controlled Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles: A Promising Strategy for Development of Novel Structures

Photo-controlled self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) is an advanced and promising approach to address a series of material issues from the molecular level to the nano/micro scale, owing to the fact that light stimulus is typically precise and rapid, and can provide contactless spatial and temporal control. The traditional photo-controlled assembly of NPs is based on photochemical processes through NPs modified by photo-responsive molecules, which are realized through the change in chemical structure under irradiation. Moreover, photoexcitation-induced assembly of NPs is another promising physical strategy, and such a strategy aims to employ molecular conformational change in the excited state (rather than the chemical structure) to drive molecular motion and assembly. The exploration and control of NP assembly through such a photo-controlled strategy can open a new paradigm for scientists to deal with "bottom-up" behaviors and develop unprecedented optoelectronic functional materials.

Cooperative and Orthogonal Switching in the Solid State Enabled by Metal-Organic Framework Confinement Leading to a Thermo-Photochromic Platform

Cooperative behavior and orthogonal responses of two classes of coordinatively integrated photochromic molecules towards distinct external stimuli were demonstrated on the first example of a photo-thermo-responsive hierarchical platform. Synergetic and orthogonal responses to temperature and excitation wavelength are achieved by confining the stimuli-responsive moieties within a metal-organic framework (MOF), leading to the preparation of a novel photo-thermo-responsive spiropyran-diarylethene based material. Synergistic behavior of two photoswitches enables the study of stimuli-responsive resonance energy transfer as well as control of the photoinduced charge transfer processes, milestones required to advance optoelectronics development. Spectroscopic studies in combination with theoretical modeling revealed a nonlinear effect on the material electronic structure arising from the coordinative integration of photoresponsive molecules with distinct photoisomerization mechanisms. Thus, the reported work covers multivariable facets of not only fundamental aspects of photoswitch cooperativity, but also provides a pathway to modulate photophysics and electronics of multidimensional functional materials exhibiting thermo-photochromism.

Spin-Frustrated Trisradical Trication of PrismCage

Organic trisradicals featuring threefold symmetry have attracted significant interest because of their unique magnetic properties associated with spin frustration. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a triangular prism-shaped organic cage for which we have coined the name PrismCage6+ and its trisradical trication─TR3(•+). PrismCage6+ is composed of three 4,4'-bipyridinium dications and two 1,3,5-phenylene units bridged by six methylene groups. In the solid state, PrismCage6+ adopts a highly twisted conformation with close to C3 symmetry as a result of encapsulating one PF6- anion as a guest. PrismCage6+ undergoes stepwise reduction to its mono-, di-, and trisradical cations in MeCN on account of strong electronic communication between its 4,4'-bipyridinium units. TR3(•+), which is obtained by the reduction of PrismCage6+ employing CoCp2, adopts a triangular prism-shaped conformation with close to C2v symmetry in the solid state. Temperature-dependent continuous-wave and nutation-frequency-selective electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of TR3(•+) in frozen N,N-dimethylformamide indicate its doublet ground state. The doublet-quartet energy gap of TR3(•+) is estimated to be -0.08 kcal mol-1, and the critical temperature of spin-state conversion is found to be ca. 50 K, suggesting that it displays pronounced spin frustration at the molecular level. To the best of our knowledge, this example is the first organic radical cage to exhibit spin frustration. The trisradical trication of PrismCage6+ opens up new possibilities for fundamental investigations and potential applications in the fields of both organic cages and spin chemistry.

Sub-picosecond collapse of molecular polaritons to pure molecular transition in plasmonic photoswitch-nanoantennas

Molecular polaritons are hybrid light-matter states that emerge when a molecular transition strongly interacts with photons in a resonator. At optical frequencies, this interaction unlocks a way to explore and control new chemical phenomena at the nanoscale. Achieving such control at ultrafast timescales, however, is an outstanding challenge, as it requires a deep understanding of the dynamics of the collectively coupled molecular excitation and the light modes. Here, we investigate the dynamics of collective polariton states, realized by coupling molecular photoswitches to optically anisotropic plasmonic nanoantennas. Pump-probe experiments reveal an ultrafast collapse of polaritons to pure molecular transition triggered by femtosecond-pulse excitation at room temperature. Through a synergistic combination of experiments and quantum mechanical modelling, we show that the response of the system is governed by intramolecular dynamics, occurring one order of magnitude faster with respect to the uncoupled excited molecule relaxation to the ground state.

Light-driven self-assembly of spiropyran-functionalized covalent organic framework

Controlling the number of molecular switches and their relative positioning within porous materials is critical to their functionality and properties. The proximity of many molecular switches to one another can hinder or completely suppress their response. Herein, a synthetic strategy involving mixed linkers is used to control the distribution of spiropyran-functionalized linkers in a covalent organic framework (COF). The COF contains a spiropyran in each pore which exhibits excellent reversible photoswitching behavior to its merocyanine form in the solid state in response to UV/Vis light. The spiro-COF possesses an urchin-shaped morphology and exhibits a morphological transition to 2D nanosheets and vesicles in solution upon UV light irradiation. The merocyanine-equipped COFs are extremely stable and possess a more ordered structure with enhanced photoluminescence. This approach to modulating structural isomerization in the solid state is used to develop inkless printing media, while the photomediated polarity change is used for water harvesting applications.

Switchable biomimetic nanochannels for on-demand SO2 detection by light-controlled photochromism

In contrast to the conventional passive reaction to analytes, here, we create a proof-of-concept nanochannel system capable of on-demand recognition of the target to achieve an unbiased response. Inspired by light-activatable biological channelrhodopsin-2, photochromic spiropyran/anodic aluminium oxide nanochannel sensors are constructed to realize a light-controlled inert/active-switchable response to SO₂ by ionic transport behaviour. We find that light can finely regulate the reactivity of the nanochannels for the on-demand detection of SO₂. Pristine spiropyran/anodic aluminium oxide nanochannels are not reactive to SO₂. After ultraviolet irradiation of the nanochannels, spiropyran isomerizes to merocyanine with a carbon‒carbon double bond nucleophilic site, which can react with SO₂ to generate a new hydrophilic adduct. Benefiting from increasing asymmetric wettability, the proposed device exhibits a robust photoactivated detection performance in SO₂ detection in the range from 10 nM to 1 mM achieved by monitoring the rectified current.

Heterocyclic Hemipiperazines: Water-Compatible Peptide-Derived Photoswitches

Hemipiperazines are a recently discovered class of peptide-derived molecular photoswitches with high biocompatibility and therapeutic potential. Here, for the first time we describe photochromism of heterocyclic hemipiperazines. They demonstrate long thermal lifetimes, and enlarged band separation between photoisomers. Efficient photoisomerization occurs under aqueous conditions, although with a need for organic co-solvent. Bidirectional switching with visible light is observed for an extended aromatic system.

Porous Electrospun Films with Reversible Photoresponsive Microenvironmental Humidity Regulation: A Controllable Hydrogen-Bonding Synergistic Effect Exhibited by Acrylic Acid Segments

Suitable relative humidity is essential for the preservation of cultural relics, food storage, and so on. A special material that can regulate the relative humidity in the microenvironment is particularly important. In this work, several innovative electrospun films with reversible photoresponsive wettability and the ability to regulate microenvironmental relative humidity were prepared. The spiropyran unit of the synthesized copolymer played the most important role in humidity regulation due to its reversible transition between a nonpolar ring-closed state and a polar ring-opened state induced by alternating ultraviolet/visible illumination. More interestingly, the introduction of acrylic acid segments exhibited a controllable hydrogen bond synergistic effect for increasing the range of humidity regulation. The color change and the reversible change ranges of wettability and microenvironmental relative humidity under ultraviolet/visible irradiation are all closely related to the number of acrylic acid segments. Cassie theory, density functional theory (DFT), and interaction region indicator (IRI) analysis were used to characterize this phenomenon. Electrospinning is a promising method to achieve large-scale production that can put such material into practical applications.

A Modern Look at Spiropyrans: From Single Molecules to Smart Materials

Photochromic compounds of the spiropyran family have two main isomers capable of inter-switching with UV or visible light. In the current review, we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, investigation of properties, and applications of spiropyran derivatives. Spiropyrans of the indoline series are in focus as the most promising representatives of multi-sensitive spirocyclic compounds, which can be switched by a number of external stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, presence of metal ions, and mechanical stress. Particular attention is paid to the structural features of molecules, their influence on photochromic properties, and the reactions taking place during isomerization, as the understanding of the structure-property relationships will rationalize the synthesis of compounds with predetermined characteristics. The main prospects for applications of spiropyrans in such fields as smart material production, molecular electronics and nanomachinery, sensing of environmental and biological molecules, and photopharmacology are also discussed.

Confinement-Driven Photophysics in Hydrazone-Based Hierarchical Materials

Confinement-imposed photophysics was probed for novel stimuli-responsive hydrazone-based compounds demonstrating a conceptual difference in their behavior within 2D versus 3D porous matrices for the first time. The challenges associated with photoswitch isomerization arising from host interactions with photochromic compounds in 2D scaffolds could be overcome in 3D materials. Solution-like photoisomerization rate constants were realized for sterically demanding hydrazone derivatives in the solid state through their coordinative immobilization in 3D scaffolds. According to steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements and theoretical modeling, this approach provides access to hydrazone-based materials with fast photoisomerization kinetics in the solid state. Fast isomerization of integrated hydrazone derivatives allows for probing and tailoring resonance energy transfer (ET) processes as a function of excitation wavelength, providing a novel pathway for ET modulation.

Designs and Applications of Multi-stimuli Responsive FRET Processes in AIEgen-Functionalized and Bi-fluorophoric Supramolecular Materials

Materials capable of displaying strong ratiometric fluorescence with Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes have attracted much research interest because of various chemosensor and biomedical applications. This review highlights several popular strategies in designing FRET-OFF/ON mechanisms of ratiometric fluorescence systems. In particular, the developments of organic and polymeric FRET materials featuring aggregation-induced emission-based luminogens (AIEgens), supramolecular assemblies, photochromic molecular switches and surfactant-induced AIE/FRET mechanisms are presented. AIEgens have been frequently employed as FRET donor and/or acceptor fluorophores to obtain enhanced ratiometric fluorescences in solution and solid states. Since AIE effects and FRET processes rely on controllable distances between fluorophores, many interesting fluorescent properties can be designed by regulating aggregation states in polymers and supramolecular systems. Photo-switchable fluorophores, such as spiropyran and diarylethene, provide drastic changes in fluorescence spectra upon photo-induced isomerizations, leading to photo-switching mechanisms to activate/deactivate FRET processes. Supramolecular assemblies offer versatile platforms to regulate responsive FRET processes effectively. In rotaxane structures, the donor-acceptor distance and FRET efficiency can be tuned by acid/base-controlled shuttling of the macrocycle component. The tunable supramolecular interactions are strongly influenced by external factors (such as pH values, temperatures, analytes, surfactants, UV-visible lights, etc.), which induce the assembly and disassembly of host-guest systems and thus their FRET-ON/FRET-OFF behavior. In addition, the changes in donor or acceptor fluorescence profiles upon detections of analytes can also sufficiently alter the FRET behavior and result in different ratiometric fluorescence outputs. The strategies and examples provided in this review offer the insights and toolkits for future FRET-based material developments.

Light-Responsive Solid-Solid Phase Change Materials for Photon and Thermal Energy Storage

We report a series of adamantane-functionalized azobenzenes that store photon and thermal energy via reversible photoisomerization in the solid state for molecular solar thermal (MOST) energy storage. The adamantane unit serves as a 3D molecular separator that enables the spatial separation of azobenzene groups and results in their facile switching even in the crystalline phase. Upon isomerization, the phase transition from crystalline to amorphous solid occurs and contributes to additional energy storage. The exclusively solid-state MOST compounds with solid-solid phase transition overcome a major challenge of solid-liquid phase transition materials that require encapsulation for practical applications.

Visible‐Light‐Responsive Self‐Assembled Complexes: Improved Photoswitching Properties by Metal Ion Coordination**

A photoswitchable ligand based on azobenzene is self‐assembled with palladium(II) ions to form a [Pd₂(E‐L)₄]⁴⁺ cage. Irradiation with 470 nm light results in the near‐quantitative switching to a monomeric species [Pd(Z‐L)₂]²⁺, which can be reversed by irradiation with 405 nm light, or heat. The photoswitching selectivity towards the metastable isomer is significantly improved upon self‐assembly, and the thermal half‐life is extended from 40 days to 850 days, a promising approach for tuning photoswitching properties.

Water-Soluble Self-Assembled Cage with Triangular Metal-Metal-Bonded Units Enabling the Sequential Selective Separation of Alkanes and Isomeric Molecules

The selective separation of structurally similar aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbons is an essential goal in industrial processes. In this study, we report the synthesis of a water-soluble (Tr₂M₃)₄L₄ (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) molecular cage (1) via self-assembly of the water-soluble acceptor tripalladium sandwich species [(Tr₂Pd₃)(CH₃CN)][NO₃]₂ and the attachment onto L of solubilizing methoxyethoxy appendants to be utilized in an energy-friendly alternative approach to the separation of structurally similar molecules under ambient conditions. Cage 1, comprising a hydrophobic inner cavity, exhibited good solubility and stability in aqueous media. It also demonstrated excellent performance in the sequential separation of alkanes (C6-C9), xylene, and other disubstituted benzene isomers and cis/trans-decalin.

Ternary host-guest complexes with rapid exchange kinetics and photoswitchable fluorescence

Confinement within molecular cages can dramatically modify the physicochemical properties of the encapsulated guest molecules, but such host-guest complexes have mainly been studied in a static context. Combining confinement effects with fast guest exchange kinetics could pave the way toward stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems—and ultimately materials—whose desired properties could be tailored “on demand” rapidly and reversibly. Here, we demonstrate rapid guest exchange between inclusion complexes of an open-window coordination cage that can simultaneously accommodate two guest molecules. Working with two types of guests, anthracene derivatives and BODIPY dyes, we show that the former can substantially modify the optical properties of the latter upon noncovalent heterodimer formation. We also studied the light-induced covalent dimerization of encapsulated anthracenes and found large effects of confinement on reaction rates. By coupling the photodimerization with the rapid guest exchange, we developed a new way to modulate fluorescence using external irradiation.

Confinement of small molecules within the cavities of natural and synthetic hosts can greatly affect the physicochemical properties of the bound species; however, to date, such host-guest complexes have been studied mainly in a static context. An important direction is the development of host-guest systems, whereby encapsulation and release of guest molecules can be reversibly controlled using light. Here, we report ternary inclusion complexes comprising an open-window coordination cage and two kinds of photoactive guests, namely, the photodimerizable anthracenes and BODIPY dyes. Alternating exposure to two different colors of light shifts the equilibrium between the encapsulated homodimers and heterodimers, thus dramatically affecting the system’s optical properties. We also find that the rates of both processes—anthracene dimerization and guest exchange—strongly depend on the substitution pattern on both types of guests, which highlights the importance of confinement effects.

Computational Modeling of Supramolecular Metallo-organic Cages-Challenges and Opportunities

Self-assembled metallo-organic cages have emerged as promising biomimetic platforms that can encapsulate whole substrates akin to an enzyme active site. Extensive experimental work has enabled access to a variety of structures, with a few notable examples showing catalytic behavior. However, computational investigations of metallo-organic cages are scarce, not least due to the challenges associated with their modeling and the lack of accurate and efficient protocols to evaluate these systems. In this review, we discuss key molecular principles governing the design of functional metallo-organic cages, from the assembly of building blocks through binding and catalysis. For each of these processes, computational protocols will be reviewed, considering their inherent strengths and weaknesses. We will demonstrate that while each approach may have its own specific pitfalls, they can be a powerful tool for rationalizing experimental observables and to guide synthetic efforts. To illustrate this point, we present several examples where modeling has helped to elucidate fundamental principles behind molecular recognition and reactivity. We highlight the importance of combining computational and experimental efforts to speed up supramolecular catalyst design while reducing time and resources.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as ‘glue’ to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

An Adaptable Water-Soluble Molecular Boat for Selective Separation of Phenanthrene from Isomeric Anthracene

Anthracene crude oil is a common source of phenanthrene for its industrial use. The isolation of phenanthrene from this source is a challenging task due to very similar physical properties to its isomer anthracene. We report here a water-soluble Pd(II) molecular boat (MB1) with unusual structural topology that was obtained by assembling a flexible tetrapyridyl donor (L) with a cis-Pd(II) acceptor. The flexible backbone of the boat enabled it to breathe in the presence of a guest optimizing the fit within the cavity. The boat binds phenanthrene more strongly than anthracene, which enabled separation of phenanthrene with an >98% purity from an equimolar mixture of the two isomers using MB1 as an extracting agent. MB1 represents a unique example of a coordination receptor suitable for selective aqueous extraction of phenanthrene from anthracene with reusability of several cycles.

Fluorescence detection and imaging of intracellular sulphite using a remote light activatable photochromic nanoprobe

The development of a responsive fluorescent probe for the detection of a particular biomolecule in a specific site at the desired moment is important in the fields of bioanalysis and imaging, molecular biology and biomedical research. In this work, we report the development of a remote-light activatable nanoprobe for the fluorescence detection of sulphite in pure aqueous solution and its imaging applications in living cells. The nanoprobe, Poly-Cm-SP, is fabricated simply by wrapping photochromic molecules (Cm-SP) into a polymer nanoparticle. Upon alternate UV/Vis light irradiation for several seconds, the Poly-Cm-SP nanoprobe exhibits red/blue fluorescence switch due to the inactive/active FRET processes from coumarins to the SP/MR isomers of the photochromic molecule. In the presence of sulphite, the specific reaction of sulphite with the electron deficit "CC" bond of the MR isomer occurs, resulting in an inefficient FRET process and thus exhibiting a constant "ON" blue channel fluorescence signal. After UV-light irradiation, the formation of activated Poly-Cm-MRin situ thus enables the detection of sulphite through recording the ratiometric changes of fluorescence signals at both blue and red channels. The Poly-Cm-SP nanoprobe possesses excellent biocompatibility and lysosome distribution capability, allowing it to be used for photochromic imaging and sulphite detection in the lysosomes of living macrophage cells. This work thus offers a new remote-light activatable nanoprobe for the detection and imaging of sulphite in biological systems.

Encapsulation within a coordination cage modulates the reactivity of redox-active dyes

Confining molecules within well-defined nanosized spaces can profoundly alter their physicochemical characteristics. For example, the controlled aggregation of chromophores into discrete oligomers has been shown to tune their optical properties whereas encapsulation of reactive species within molecular hosts can increase their stability. The resazurin/resorufin pair has been widely used for detecting redox processes in biological settings; yet, how tight confinement affects the properties of these two dyes remains to be explored. Here, we show that a flexible Pd^II₆L₄ coordination cage can efficiently encapsulate both resorufin and resazurin in the form of dimers, dramatically modulating their optical properties. Furthermore, binding within the cage significantly decreases the reduction rate of resazurin to resorufin, and the rate of the subsequent reduction of resorufin to dihydroresorufin. During our studies, we also found that upon dilution, the Pd^II₆L₄ cage disassembles to afford Pd^II₂L₂ species, which lacks the ability to form inclusion complexes - a process that can be reversed upon the addition of the strongly binding resorufin/resazurin guests. We expect that the herein disclosed ability of a water-soluble cage to reversibly modulate the optical and chemical properties of a molecular redox probe will expand the versatility of synthetic fluorescent probes in biologically relevant environments.

Visible-Light Switching of Metallosupramolecular Assemblies

A photoswitchable ligand and palladium(II) ions form a dynamic mixture of self-assembled metallosupramolecular structures. The photoswitching ligand is an ortho-fluoroazobenzene with appended pyridyl groups. Combining the E-isomer with palladium(II) salts affords a double-walled triangle with composition [Pd3 L6 ]6+ and a distorted tetrahedron [Pd4 L8 ]8+ (1 : 2 ratio at 298 K). Irradiation with 410 nm light generates a photostationary state with approximately 80 % of the E-isomer of the ligand and results in the selective disassembly of the tetrahedron, the more thermodynamically stable structure, and the formation of the triangle, the more kinetically inert product. The triangle is then slowly transformed back into the tetrahedron over 2 days at 333 K. The Z-isomer of the ligand does not form any well-defined structures and has a thermal half-life of 25 days at 298 K. This approach shows how a thermodynamically preferred self-assembled structure can be reversibly pumped to a kinetic trap by small perturbations of the isomer distribution using non-destructive visible light.

Coexistence of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 inclusion complexes of indigo carmine

We show that the optical properties of indigo carmine can be modulated by encapsulation within a coordination cage. Depending on the host/guest molar ratio, the cage can predominantly encapsulate either one or two dye molecules. The 1 : 1 complex is fluorescent, unique for an indigo dye in an aqueous solution. We have also found that binding two dye molecules stabilizes a previously unknown conformation of the cage.

We show that the optical properties of indigo carmine can be modulated by encapsulation within a coordination cage.

Synthesis of novel silica encapsulated spiropyran-based thermochromic materials

A series of novel spiropyrans were synthesized through the condensation of substituted 3,3-dimethyl-2-methyleneindoline with different nitro-substituted o-hydroxy aromatic aldehydes. Indoles were initially substituted with a variety of alkanes and esters moieties. The substituted 3,3-dimethyl-2-methyleneindoline was then reacted with nitro-substituted o-hydroxy aromatic aldehydes to yield the respective spiropyrans. The synthesized novel spiropyrans were encapsulated in silica nano-shells to protect them from the effect of moisture and pH. The thermochromic behaviour of novel spiropyrans was studied by UV-visible spectroscopy. The thermally induced isomerization of spiropyran derivatives was carried out in a water/ethanol mixture. The thermal isomerization of spiro-heterocyclic (colourless form) to merocyanine (MC) (coloured form) was a discontinuous process and was observed in a temperature range of 5-60°C via UV-visible spectrometer. The absorption process occurs reversibly regardless of the heating/cooling sequence. The spiropyran derivatives, therefore, have a potential application for colorimetric temperature indication.

Synthesis of MnO2-Ag Nanojunctions with Plasmon-Enhanced Photocatalytic and Photothermal Effects for Constructing Rewritable Mono-/Multi-Color Fabrics

Semiconductor-mediated photoreversible color switching systems (PCSSs) have great potential to replace traditional photochromic materials, and the key is to obtain semiconductors with unique photocatalytic and photothermal features. Herein, we have developed MnO₂-Ag nanojunctions with plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic and photothermal effects for PCSSs. MnO₂-Ag nanojunctions are solvothermally synthesized with Mn(CH₃COO)₃, KMnO₄, and AgNO₃ in diethylene glycol as precursors, and they are composed of MnO₂ nanoparticles (∼30 nm) that are decorated by Ag nanodots (∼6 nm). The presence of Ag confers an enhanced visible photoabsorption with a narrow band gap for MnO₂ (E_g = 1.82 eV) and a weak/broad photoabsorption tail (∼875 nm) compared to that of pure MnO₂ (2.45 eV, ∼625 nm). By coupling MnO₂-Ag nanojunctions with various redox dyes, some PCSS inks can be obtained, and especially, the inks containing hydroxyethyl cellulose could be used to prepare rewritable fabrics. When inks and fabrics are irradiated by 475 nm light, rapid discoloration can occur, resulting from the photocatalytic reduction of the dye. Contrarily, the irradiation of 808 nm light promotes the rapid recoloration since Ag nanodots with plasmonic effects in the nanojunctions can absorb light to generate heat, which facilitates the oxidization of leuco dyes in air. Consequently, remote printing of figures was attained on the rewritable fabrics via 475 nm light illumination, and then, the erasure was performed by 808 nm light illumination in an O₂ atmosphere, with high reversibility and cycling stability. Therefore, MnO₂-Ag nanojunctions have tremendous promise for rewritable media, and the introduction of metal-semiconductor junctions as a nanophotocatalyst offers new insights for PCSSs.

Multi-Component Collaborative Step-by-Step Coloring Strategy to Achieve High-Performance Light-Responsive Color-Switching

Light-responsive color-switching materials (LCMs) are long-lasting hot fields. However, non-ideal comprehensive performance (such as color contrast and retention time cannot be combined, unsatisfactory repeatability, and non-automated coloring mode) significantly hinder their development toward high-end products. Herein, the development of LCMs that exhibit long retention time, good color contrast, repeatability, and the property of automatic coloring is reported. The realization of this goal stems from the adoption of a bio-inspired multi-component collaborative step-by-step coloring strategy. Under this strategy, a conventional one-step photochromic process is divided into a "light+heat" controlled multi-step process for the fabrication of the desired LCMs. The obtained LCMs can effectively resist the long-troubled ambient-light interference and avoid its inherent yellow background, thereby achieving the longest retention time and good repeatability. Multiple colors are generated and ultra-fast imaging compatible with the laser-printing technology is also realized. The application potential of the materials in short-term reusable identity cards, absorptive readers, billboards, and shelf labels is demonstrated. The results reported herein can potentially help in developing and designing various high-performance, switchable materials that can be used for the production of high-end products.

Extending the Legible Time of Light-Responsive Rewritable Papers with a Tunable Photochromic Diarylethene Molecule

Inkless printing based on rewritable papers has recently made great progress because it can improve the utilization rate of papers, which is of great significance for saving resources and protecting the environment. Among them, light-responsive rewritable papers (LRPs) are a hot research topic because light is clean, easily available, wavelength and intensity adjustable, and noncontacting. However, the photochromic material, as the imaging substance of LRPs, is easily affected by environmental conditions, resulting in insufficient time to read the information. In view of this, we designed and constructed an acid/base tunable diarylethene molecular system that can effectively adjust the photochromic properties by reversibly changing the electron density of the diarylethene photoreaction center through protonation and demonstrated its potential as an imaging material with a longer legible time. What makes us more satisfied is that the acidification can not only extend the legible time of carrying information but also bring a clear and stable absorption/fluorescence imaging dual mode, which can better reflect details and improve contrast. Therefore, we believe that this tunable photochromic diarylethene molecule is a potential imaging material for the development of new LRPs.

Unveiling electron transfer in a supramolecular aggregate for adaptive and autonomous photochromic response

Interactive and responsive materials are dynamic molecular systems that are capable of modulating their behavior and adapting to environment autonomously. Photochromic materials are among the fascinating class of dynamic responsive systems and widely used in molecular switches and optoelectronic devices. However, the phototriggered color changing largely relies on the conformation transformation of the photochromic motif, which significantly limited their usage in organic liquid solutions. Herein, we demonstrate a photochromic organic supramolecular system by using electron-rich N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and electron-deficient naphthalenediimide (NDI) as a donor and acceptor, respectively. In the binary system, the photo-induced electron transfer through lone pair···π interactions pathway leads to dynamic photochromic response not only in the solution but also in the crystalline aggregated state. Furthermore, by incorporating the supramolecules in the polymer matrix, the transparent polymeric film also exhibits rapid photochromic response, which makes it a promisingly interactive and adaptive photochromic material.

Achieving enhanced solid-state photochromism and mechanochromism by introducing a rigid steric hindrance group

For photochromic molecules, effective isomerization usually requires conformational freedom, which is usually unavailable under solvent-free conditions. In this work, we report a new method, which can realize the reversible switching of spiropyran molecules by introducing a rigid aromatic ring group and this method can provide the required free volume to transform from a closed-ring to an open-ring form. This new molecule can quickly change color in the solid state under ultraviolet light, and can be erased after being heated at 60 °C for about 5 minutes. Furthermore, this new compound presents mechanochromicity when a mechanical force is applied. What is more, it can be used for at least 30 cycles of print-erase operations without apparent fatigue. This new molecule exhibits improved photochromic and anti-fatigue properties in the solid state, which can promote its application in both ultraviolet printing and anti-counterfeiting materials.

Hydrogen-Bonded Dimeric Capsules with Appended Spiropyran Units: Towards Controlled Cargo Release

We report the synthesis of unprecedented tetra-urea derivatives of calix[4]arene and calix[4]pyrrole containing four spiropyran (SP) units at their upper rim. We investigate the photo- and acid-induced isomerization of the monomeric and homo-dimeric tetra-ureas derivatives using UV-Vis and ¹ H NMR spectroscopies. At micromolar concentration, irradiation of the samples with 365 nm light induces changes in their absorption spectra that are consistent with SP→merocyanine (MC) isomerization. However, analogous experiments at millimolar concentration do not produce noticeable changes in the ¹ H NMR spectra. The addition of triflic acid to micromolar and millimolar solutions of the tetra-ureas produces the quantitative isomerization of the SP units to the protonated merocyanine form (E-MCH⁺ ) and the simultaneous disassembly of the capsular dimers to form ill-defined aggregates. The neutralization of the acid solutions resets the SP form. Under these acid/base treatment conditions, the controlled release of the included guest and the reassembly of the all-SP tetra-urea dimers occurs at different extents depending on its calix[4]arene or calix[4]pyrrole scaffold.
