Tuning molecular emission of organic emitters from fluorescence to phosphorescence through push-pull electronic effects

Dual-targeted fluorescent probe for tracking polarity and phase transition processes during lipophagy

Eukaryotic cells regulate various cellular processes through membrane-bound and membrane-less organelles, enabling active signal communication and material exchange. Lysosomes and lipid droplets are representative organelles, contributing to cell lipophagy when their interaction and metabolism are disrupted. Our limited understanding of the interacting behaviours and physicochemical properties of different organelles during lipophagy hinders accurate diagnosis and treatment of related diseases. In this contribution, we report a fluorescent probe, PTZ, engineered for dual-targeting of lipid droplets and lysosomes. PTZ can track liquid-liquid phase separation and respond to polarity shifts through ratiometric fluorescence emission, elucidating the lipophagy process from the perspective of organelle behavior and physicochemical properties. Leveraging on the multifunctionality of PTZ, we have successfully tracked the polarity and dynamic changes of lysosomes and lipid droplets during lipophagy. Furthermore, an unknown homogeneous transition of lipid droplets and lysosomes was discovered, which provided a new perspective for understanding lipophagy processes. And this work is expected to serve as a reference for diagnosis and treatment of lipophagy-related diseases.

Nylons with Highly-Bright and Ultralong Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Endowing the widely-used synthetic polymer nylon with high-performance organic room-temperature phosphorescence would produce advanced materials with a great potential for applications in daily life and industry. One key to achieving this goal is to find a suitable organic luminophore that can access the triplet excited state with the aid of the nylon matrix by controlling the matrix-luminophore interaction. Herein we report highly-efficient room-temperature phosphorescence nylons by doping cyano-substituted benzimidazole derivatives into the nylon 6 matrix. These homogeneously doped materials show ultralong phosphorescence lifetimes of up to 1.5 s and high phosphorescence quantum efficiency of up to 48.3% at the same time. The synergistic effect of the homogeneous dopant distribution via hydrogen bonding interaction, the rigid environment of the matrix polymer, and the potential energy transfer between doped luminophores and nylon is important for achieving the high-performance room-temperature phosphorescence, as supported by combined experimental and theoretical results with control compounds and various polymeric matrices. One-dimensional optical fibers are prepared from these doped room-temperature phosphorescence nylons that can transport both blue fluorescent and green afterglow photonic signals across the millimeter distance without significant optical attenuation. The potential applications of these phosphorescent materials in dual information encryption and rewritable recording are illustrated.

Delayed room temperature phosphorescence enabled by phosphines

Organic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) usually emerges instantly and immediately decays after excitation removal. Here we report a new delayed RTP that is postponed by dozens of milliseconds after excitation removal and decays in two steps including an initial increase in intensity followed by subsequent decrease in intensity. The delayed RTP is achieved through introduction of phosphines into carbazole emitters. In contrast to the rapid energy transfer from single-molecular triplet states (T1) to stabilized triplet states (Tn*) of instant RTP systems, phosphine groups insert their intermediate states (TM) between carbazole-originated T1 and Tn* of carbazole-phosphine hybrids. In addition to markedly increasing emission lifetimes by ten folds, since TM → Tn* transition require >30 milliseconds, RTP is thereby postponed by dozens of milliseconds. The emission character of carbazole-phosphine hybrids can be used to reveal information through combining instant and delayed RTP, realizing multi-level time resolution for advanced information, biological and optoelectronic applications.

Multi-Functional Integration of Phosphor, Initiator, and Crosslinker for the Photo-Polymerization of Flexible Phosphorescent Polymer Gels

A general approach to constructing room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials involves the incorporation of a phosphorescent emitter into a rigid host or polymers with high glass transition temperature. However, these materials often suffer from poor processability and suboptimal mechanical properties, limiting their practical applications. In this work, we developed benzothiadiazole-based dialkene (BTD-HEA), a multifunctional phosphorescent emitter with a remarkable yield of intersystem crossing (ΦISC, 99.83 %). Its high triplet exciton generation ability and dialkene structure enable BTD-HEA to act as a photoinitiator and crosslinker, efficiently initiating the polymerization of various monomers within 120 seconds. A range of flexible phosphorescence gels, including hydrogels, organogels, ionogels, and aerogels were fabricated, which exhibit outstanding stretchability and recoverability. Furthermore, the unique fluorescent-phosphorescent colorimetric properties of the gels provide a more sensitive method for the visual determination of the polymerization process. Notably, the phosphorescent emission intensity of the hydrogel can be increased by the formation of ice, allowing for the precise detection of hydrogel freezing. The versatility of this emitter paves the way for fabricating various flexible phosphorescence gels with diverse morphologies using microfluidics, film-shearing, roll coating process, and two/three-dimensional printing, showcasing its potential applications in the fields of bioimaging and bioengineering.

Host-Guest Doping Modulated Afterglow Emission of Fluoroquinolones for Their Separation-Free Detection and Discrimination

Detection and discrimination of fluoroquinolones (FQs) are crucial for food safety but remain a formidable challenge due to their minor differences in molecular structures and the serious interferences from food matrices. Herein, we propose an afterglow assay for the detection and discrimination of FQs through modulating their room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties by a host-guest doping strategy. FQs were doped into the boric acid host, forming boronic anhydride structures and hydrogen bonds, which prompted the RTP and TADF performance of FQs by stabilizing their excited states, preventing triplet exciton quenching, and reducing the energy gap between singlet and triplet states. The FQs can be quantitatively detected through monitoring the afterglow intensity of host-guest systems, as low as 0.25 μg/mL. The differences in the afterglow intensity and emission lifetime allowed accurate discrimination of 11 types of FQs through pattern recognition methods. Aided by the delayed signal detection model of afterglow emission, the background signal and the interferences from food matrices were effectively eliminated, which endow the detection and discrimination of mixed FQs in commercial meat samples, without multiple-step separation processes.

High-Resolution Afterglow Patterning Using Cooperative Vapo- and Photo-Stimulation

Bright afterglow room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) soon after ceasing excitation is a promising technique for greatly increasing anti-counterfeiting capabilities. The development of a process for rapid high-resolution afterglow patterning of crystalline materials can improve both high-speed fabrication of anti-counterfeiting afterglow media and stable afterglow readout compared with those achieved with amorphous materials. Here, the high-resolution afterglow patterning of crystalline materials via cooperative organic vapo- and photo-stimulation is reported. A single crystal of (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-5,5',6,6',7,7'8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-binaphthyl [(S)-H8-BINAP] doped with (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl [(S)-BINAP] shows green afterglow RTP. Crystals of (S)-BINAP-doped (S)-H8-BINAP changed to an amorphous state with no afterglow capability on weak continuous photoirradiation under dichloromethane (DCM) vapor. Photoirradiation induced oxidation of the (S)-H8-BINAP host molecule in the crystal. The oxidized (S)-H8-BINAP forms on the crystal surface strongly interacted with DCM molecules, which induces melting of the (S)-BINAP-doped (S)-H8-BINAP crystal and trigger formation of an amorphous state without an afterglow capability. High-resolution afterglow patterning of the crystalline film is rapidly achieved by using cooperative organic vapo- and photo-stimulation. In addition to the benefit of rapid afterglow patterning, the formed afterglow images of the crystalline film can be repeatedly read out under ambient conditions without DCM vapor.

Organic Optoelectronic Materials: A Rising Star of Bioimaging and Phototherapy

Recently, many organic optoelectronic materials (OOMs), especially those used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic solar cells (OSCs), and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), are explored for biomedical applications including imaging and photoexcited therapies. In this review, recently developed OOMs for fluorescence imaging, photoacoustic imaging, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy, are summarized. Relationships between their molecular structures, nanoaggregation structures, photophysical mechanisms, and properties for various biomedical applications are discussed. Mainly four kinds of OOMs are covered: thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials in OLEDs, conjugated small molecules and polymers in OSCs, and charge-transfer complexes in OFETs. Based on the OOMs unique optical properties, including excitation light wavelength and exciton dynamics, they are respectively exploited for suitable biomedical applications. This review is intended to serve as a bridge between researchers in the area of organic optoelectronic devices and those in the area of biomedical applications. Moreover, it provides guidance for selecting or modifying OOMs for high-performance biomedical uses. Current challenges and future perspectives of OOMs are also discussed with the hope of inspiring further development of OOMs for efficient biomedical applications.

Tetrazine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks With Acid Sensing and Photocatalytic Activity

The first synthesis and comprehensive characterization of two vinyl tetrazine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COF), TA-COF-1 and TA-COF-2, are reported. These materials exhibit high crystallinity and high specific surface areas of 1323 and 1114 m2 g-1. The COFs demonstrate favorable band positions and narrow band gaps suitable for light-driven applications. These advantages enable TA-COFs to act as reusable metal-free photocatalysts in the arylboronic acids oxidation and light-induced coupling of benzylamines. In addition, these TA-COFs show acid sensing capabilities, exhibiting visible and reversible color changes upon exposure to HCl solution, HCl vapor, and NH3 vapor. Further, the TA-COFs outperform a wide range of previously reported COF photocathodes. The tetrazine linker in the COF skeleton represents a significant advancement in the field of COF synthesis, enhancing the separation efficiency of charge carriers during the photoreaction and contributing to their photocathodic properties. TA-COFs can also degrade 5-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-3-one (NTO), an insensitive explosive present in industrial wastewater, in 20 min in a sunlight-driven photocatalytic process; thus, revealing dual functionality of the protonated TA-COFs as both photodegradation and Brønsted acid catalysts. This pioneering work opens new avenues for harnessing the potential of the tetrazine linker in COF-based materials, facilitating advances in catalysis, sensing, and other related fields.

Abnormal thermally-stimulated dynamic organic phosphorescence

Dynamic luminescence behavior by external stimuli, such as light, thermal field, electricity, mechanical force, etc., endows the materials with great promise in optoelectronic applications. Upon thermal stimulus, the emission is inevitably quenched due to intensive non-radiative transition, especially for phosphorescence at high temperature. Herein, we report an abnormal thermally-stimulated phosphorescence behavior in a series of organic phosphors. As temperature changes from 198 to 343 K, the phosphorescence at around 479 nm gradually enhances for the model phosphor, of which the phosphorescent colors are tuned from yellow to cyan-blue. Furthermore, we demonstrate the potential applications of such dynamic emission for smart dyes and colorful afterglow displays. Our results would initiate the exploration of dynamic high-temperature phosphorescence for applications in smart optoelectronics. This finding not only contributes to an in-depth understanding of the thermally-stimulated phosphorescence, but also paves the way toward the development of smart materials for applications in optoelectronics.

One Pot Synthesis of New Benzimidazole Derivatives with Exceptionally High Luminescence Quantum Efficiency

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

There are different approaches to the synthesis of benzimidazole. In this article, five new benzimidazole derivatives, BMPO, Me-BMPO, Di-MeBMPO, F-BMPO and Cl-BMPO where (BMPO=3-[(1H)-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl]pyridin-2(1H)-one), have been prepared. Another study was carried out on luminescence properties and their potential applications for the detection of transition metal ions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From the one-pot synthesis approach, all the derivatives of the benzimidazole compounds were obtained. The compounds were characterized using HRMS, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and X-ray crystallography. Herein, a mechanism has been deciphered by predicting the release of HCl(g).

RESULTS

All compounds showed a strong deep blue emission when dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA), with emission wavelengths at 423, 428, 435, 423, and 421 nm, and half-times of 3.64, 2.77, 2, 19, 3.42 and 3.52 ns, respectively. In addition, their emission quantum yields were determined to be 72, 50, 42, 73 and 80%.

CONCLUSION

Five new benzimidazole derivatives, BMPO, Me-BMPO, Di-MeBIPO, F-BIPO, and Cl-BIPO, have been successfully synthesized by the one-pot synthesis method, and their structures are characterized and confirmed. The compounds exhibited exceptional luminescence by emitting a strong blue light in DMA with high fluorescence quantum yields between 42~80%.

Continuous Condensed Triplet Accumulation for Irradiance-Induced Anticounterfeit Afterglow

Afterglow room-temperature emission that is independent of autofluorescence after ceasing excitation is a promising technology for state-of-the-art bioimaging and security devices. However, the low brightness of the afterglow emission is a current limitation for using such materials in a variety of applications. Herein, the continuous formation of condensed triplet excitons for brighter afterglow room-temperature phosphorescence is reported. (S)-(-)-2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl ((S)-BINAP) incorporated in a crystalline host lattice showed bright green afterglow room-temperature phosphorescence under strong excitation. The small triplet-triplet absorption cross-section of (S)-BINAP in the whole range of visible wavelengths greatly suppressed the deactivation caused by Förster resonance energy transfer from excited states of (S)-BINAP to the accumulated triplet excitons of (S)-BINAP under strong continuous excitation. The steady-state concentration of the triplet excitons for (S)-BINAP reached 2.3 × 10-2  M, producing a bright afterglow. Owing to the brighter afterglow, afterglow detection using individual particles with sizes approaching the diffraction limit in aqueous conditions and irradiance-dependent anticounterfeiting can be achieved.

Recent advances in the design of afterglow materials: mechanisms, structural regulation strategies and applications

Afterglow materials are attracting widespread attention owing to their distinctive and long-lived optical emission properties which create exciting opportunities in various fields. Recent research has led to the discovery of many new afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and lifetimes of up to several hours under ambient conditions. Afterglow materials are typically categorized according to their luminescence mechanism, such as long-persistent luminescence (LPL), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through rational design and novel synthetic strategies to modulate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and populate triplet exciton states (T1), luminophores with long lifetimes and bright afterglow characteristics can be realized. Initial research towards afterglow materials focused mainly on pure inorganic materials, many of which possessed inherent disadvantages such as metal toxicity or low energy emissions. In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials (OIHAMs) have been developed with high PLQY and long lifetimes. These hybrid materials exploit the tunable structure and easy processing of organic molecules, as well as enhanced SOC and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes involving heavy atom dopants, to achieve excellent afterglow performance. In this review, we begin by briefly discussing the structure and composition of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including strategies for regulating their lifetime, PLQY and luminescence wavelength. The specific advantages of organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including low manufacturing costs, diverse molecular/electronic structures, tunable structures and optical properties, and compatibility with a variety of substrates, are emphasized. Subsequently, we discuss in detail the fundamental mechanisms used by afterglow materials, their classification, design principles, and end applications (including sensing, anticounterfeiting, and photoelectric devices, among others). Finally, existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed, laying a platform for the design of afterglow materials for specific applications.

Comprehensive advances in the synthesis, fluorescence mechanism and multifunctional applications of red-emitting carbon nanomaterials

Red emitting fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have drawn significant scientific interest in recent years due to their high quantum yield, water-dispersibility, photostability, biocompatibility, ease of surface functionalization, low cost and eco-friendliness. The red emissive characteristics of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials generally depend on the carbon source, reaction time, synthetic approach/methodology, surface functional groups, average size, and other reaction environments, which directly or indirectly help to achieve red emission. The importance of several factors to achieve red fluorescent carbon nanomaterials is highlighted in this review. Numerous plausible theories have been explained in detail to understand the origin of red fluorescence and tunable emission in these carbon-based nanostructures. The above advantages and fluorescence in the red region make them a potential candidate for multifunctional applications in various current fields. Therefore, this review focused on the recent advances in the synthesis approach, mechanism of fluorescence, and electronic and optical properties of red-emitting fluorescent carbon nanomaterials. This review also explains the several innovative applications of red-emitting fluorescent carbon nanomaterials such as biomedicine, light-emitting devices, sensing, photocatalysis, energy, anticounterfeiting, fluorescent silk, artificial photosynthesis, etc. It is hoped that by choosing appropriate methods, the present review can inspire and guide future research on the design of red emissive fluorescent carbon nanomaterials for potential advancements in multifunctional applications.

A Heavy-atom-free Molecular Motif Based on Symmetric Bird-like Structured Tetraphenylenes with Room-Temperature Phosphorescence (RTP) Afterglow over 8 s

In recent years, pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with highly efficient and long-persistent afterglow has drawn substantial awareness. Commonly, spin-orbit coupling can be improved by introducing heavy atoms into pure-organic molecules. However, this strategy will simultaneously increase the radiative and non-radiative transition rate, further resulting in dramatic decreases in the excited state lifetime and afterglow duration. Here in this work, a highly symmetric bird-like structure tetraphenylene (TeP), and its three symmetrical halogenated derivatives (TeP-F, TeP-Cl and TeP-Br) are synthesized, while their RTP properties and mechanisms are systematically investigated by both theoretical and experimental approaches. As the results, the rigid, highly twisted conformation of TeP restricts the non-radiative processes of RTP and gives rise to the enhancement of electron-exchange, which can contribute to the RTP radiation process. Despite the faint RTP of the bromine and chlorine-substituted ones (TeP-Br, TeP-Cl), the fluoro-substituted TeP-F exhibited a long phosphorescent lifetime up to 890 ms, corresponding to an extremely long RTP afterglow over 8 s, which could be incorporated into the best series of non-heavy-atom RTP materials reported in previous literature.

Aggregation-Induced Structural Symmetry Breaking Promotes Charge Separation for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Recently, organic semiconductors have received much attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their tunable physicochemical properties. However, organic semiconductor photocatalysts typically suffer from severe charge recombination due to high exciton binding energy. Herein, we found that aggregation of pyrene results in a red-shift of the light absorption from UV to visible light region. Importantly, the aggregation can induce dipole polarization by spontaneous structural symmetry breaking, thus significantly accelerating the separation and transfer of charge carriers. As a result, the pyrene aggregates display enhanced hydrogen photosynthesis activity. Furthermore, the noncovalent interactions allow rational design of physicochemical and electronic properties of pyrene aggregates, further strengthening the charge separation and photocatalytic activity of aggregates. The quantum yield of pyrene aggregates for hydrogen production highly reaches 20.77 % at 400 nm. Moreover, we have also observed pyrene analogues (1-hydroxypyrene, 1-nitropyrene and perylene) after aggregation all display large dipole moments induced by structural symmetry breaking and therefore accelerate the separation of charge carriers, confirming its general principle. This work highlights the achievement of using aggregation-induced structural symmetry breaking to enable the separation and transfer of charge carriers.

Rational molecular and doping strategies to obtain organic polymers with ultralong RTP

Organic-doped polymers and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) mechanisms have been widely reported. However, RTP lifetimes >3 s are rare and RTP-enhancing strategies are incompletely understood. Herein, we demonstrate a rational molecular doping strategy to obtain ultralong-lived, yet bright RTP polymers. The n-π* transitions of boron- and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds can promote a triplet-state population, and the grafting of boronic acid onto polyvinyl alcohol can inhibit molecular thermal deactivation. However, excellent RTP properties were achieved by grafting 1-0.1% (N-phenylcarbazol-2-yl)-boronic acid rather than (2-/3-/4-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)boronic acids to afford record-breaking ultralong RTP lifetimes up to 3.517-4.444 s. These results showed that regulation of the interacting position between the dopant and matrix molecules to directly confine the triplet chromophore could more effectively stabilize triplet excitons, disclosing a rational molecular-doping strategy for achieving polymers with ultralong RTP. Based on the energy-donor function of blue RTP, an ultralong red fluorescent afterglow was demonstrated by co-doping with an organic dye.

Achieving White-Light Emission Using Organic Persistent Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Artificial lighting currently consumes approximately one-fifth of global electricity production. Organic emitters with white persistent RTP have potential for applications in energy-efficient lighting technologies, due to their ability to harvest both singlet and triplet excitons. Compared to heavy metal phosphorescent materials, they have significant advantages in cost, processability, and reduced toxicity. Phosphorescence efficiency can be improved by introducing heteroatoms, heavy atoms, or by incorporating luminophores within a rigid matrix. White-light emission can be achieved by tuning the ratio of fluorescence to phosphorescence intensity or by pure phosphorescence with a broad emission spectrum. This review summarizes recent advances in the design of purely organic RTP materials with white-light emission, describing single-component and host-guest systems. White phosphorescent carbon dots and representative applications of white-light RTP materials are also introduced.

Förster resonance energy transfer involving the triplet state

Triplet harvesting is important for high-efficiency optoelectronics devices, time-resolved bioimaging, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting devices. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the donor (D) to the acceptor (A) is important to efficiently harvest the triplet excitons after a variety of excitations. However, general explanations of the key factors of FRET from the singlet state (FRET_S-S) via reverse intersystem crossing and FRET from the triplet state (FRET_T-S) have not been reported beyond spectral overlap between emission of the D and absorption of the A. This feature article gives an overview of FRET involving the triplet state. After discussing the contribution of the radiation yield from the state of the D considering spin-forbidden factors of FRET, a variety of schemes involving triplet states, such as FRET_S-Svia reverse intersystem crossing from the triplet state, dual FRET_S-S and FRET_T-S, and selective FRET_T-S, are introduced. Representative examples, including the chemical structure and FRET for triplet harvesting, are highlighted using emerging applications in optoelectronics and afterglow imaging. Finally, recent developments of using FRET involving triplet states for high-efficiency optoelectronic devices and time-resolved bioimaging are discussed. This article provides crucial information for controlling state-of-the-art properties using FRET involving the triplet state.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Nanostructures: Beyond Biomedical Applications

The discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon in 2001 has had a significant impact on materials development across different research disciplines. AIE-active materials have been widely exploited for various applications in optoelectronics, sensing, biomedical, and stimuli-responsive systems, etc. This is made possible by integrating AIE features with other fields of science and engineering, such as nanoscience and nanotechnology. AIE has been extensively employed, particularly for biomedical applications, such as biosensing, bioimaging, and theranostics. However, development of AIE-based nanotechnology for other applications is comparatively less, although there have been increasing research activities in recent years. Given the significance and potential of the marriage between AIE hallmark and nanotechnology in AIE-active materials development, this review article summarizes and showcases the latest research efforts in AIE-based nanomaterials, including nanomaterials synthesis and their nonbiomedical applications, such as sensing, optoelectronics, functional coatings, and stimuli-responsive systems. A perspective on the outlook of AIE-based nanostructured materials and relevant nanotechnology for nonbiomedical applications will be provided, giving an insight into how to design AIE-active nanostructures as well as their applications beyond the biomedical domain.

Poly(arylene piperidine) Quaternary Ammonium Salts Promoting Stable Long-Lived Room-Temperature Phosphorescence in Aqueous Environment

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have garnered considerable research attention owing to their excellent luminescence properties and potential application prospects in anti-counterfeiting, information storage, and optoelectronics. However, several RTP systems are extremely sensitive to humidity, and consequently, the realization of long-lived RTP in water remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a feasible and effective strategy is presented to achieve long-lived polymeric RTP systems, even in an aqueous environment, through doping of synthesized polymeric phosphor PBHDB into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. Compared to the precursor polymer PBN and organic molecule HDBP, a more rigid polymer microenvironment and electrostatic interaction are formed between the PMMA matrix and polymer PBHDB, which effectively reduce the nonradiative decay rate of triplet excitons and dramatically increase the phosphorescence intensity. Specifically, the phosphorescence lifetime of the PBHDB@PMMA film (1258.62 ms) is much longer than those of PBN@PMMA (674.20 ms) and HDBP@PMMA (1.06 ms). Most importantly, a bright-green afterglow can be observed after soaking the PBHDB@PMMA film in water for more than a month. The excellent water resistance and reversible response properties endow these systems with promising potential for dynamic information encryption even in water.

Synergistic Generation and Accumulation of Triplet Excitons for Efficient Ultralong Organic Phosphorescence

The traditional method to achieve ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) is to hybrid nπ* and ππ* configurations in appropriate proportion, which are contradictory to each other for improving efficiency and lifetime of phosphorescence. In this work, through replacing the electron-donating aromatic group with a methoxy group and combining intramolecular halogen bond to promote intersystem crossing and suppress non-radiative transition, an efficient UOP molecule (2Br-OSPh) has been synthesized with the longest lifetime and brightest UOP among its isomers. As compared to CzS2Br, which has a similar substituted position of bromine atom and a larger k_isc (the rate of intersystem crossing), the smaller ΔE_TT* (the energy gap between monomeric phosphorescence and aggregated state phosphorescence) in 2Br-OSPh could accelerate the transition from T₁ to T₁ *. This research indicates that both generation and accumulation of triplet excitons play an important role in realizing efficient UOP materials.

Luminescent columnar discotics as highly efficient emitters in pure deep-blue OLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 4.7

Development of materials that serve as efficient blue emitters in solution-processable OLEDs is challenging. In this study, we report three derivatives of C₃-symmetric 1,3,5-tris(thien-2-yl)benzene-based highly luminescent room temperature columnar discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) suitable as solid-state emitters in OLED devices. When employed in solution-processed OLEDs, one of the derivatives having the highest photoluminescence quantum yield exhibited a maximum EQE of 4.7% and CIE chromaticity of (0.16, 0.05) corresponding to the ultra deep-blue emission. The finding is sufficiently significant in the field of DLC-based deep blue emitters.

Aggregation-Induced Dual Phosphorescence from (o-Bromophenyl)-Bis(2,6-Dimethylphenyl)Borane at Room Temperature

Designing highly efficient purely organic phosphors at room temperature remains a challenge because of fast non-radiative processes and slow intersystem crossing (ISC) rates. The majority of them emit only single component phosphorescence. Herein, we have prepared 3 isomers (o, m, p-bromophenyl)-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)boranes. Among the 3 isomers (o-, m- and p-BrTAB) synthesized, the ortho-one is the only one which shows dual phosphorescence, with a short lifetime of 0.8 ms and a long lifetime of 234 ms in the crystalline state at room temperature. Based on theoretical calculations and crystal structure analysis of o-BrTAB, the short lifetime component is ascribed to the T1 M state of the monomer which emits the higher energy phosphorescence. The long-lived, lower energy phosphorescence emission is attributed to the T1 A state of an aggregate, with multiple intermolecular interactions existing in crystalline o-BrTAB inhibiting nonradiative decay and stabilizing the triplet states efficiently.

More than Carbazole Derivatives Activate Room Temperature Ultralong Organic Phosphorescence of Benzoindole Derivatives

The mechanism of carbazole (Cz)-based phosphors is still unclear since its isomer (1H-benzo[f]indole, Bd) is discovered in 2020. Herein, the successful synthesis of four Cz/Bd derivatives is reported, named as 2CzBr, CzBdBr, 2BdBr, and 3Bd, and the general mechanism for their ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) is provided. Bd and its derivatives give double groups of phosphorescence, including the short-wavelength phosphorescence with a short lifetime and the ultralong phosphorescence at long wavelengths, assigned to their neutral molecules and radical cations, respectively. Interestingly, the doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films of CzBdBr and 2BdBr show photo-activated ultralong phosphorescence at room temperature. The activation of Bd derivatives 'UOP involves three factors: 1) well dispersion in the matrix with limited amount, 2) generation of their radical cations and 3) the matrix-mediated stabilization of radical cations. The function of Cz derivatives to activate the Bd derivatives' UOP could be replaced by photo-activation or using other matrixes. Significantly, the application of the doped PMMA films is practiced and gives an exciting result that the high-resolution QR code could be reversibly printed and erased on the film. This research has expanded the understanding in the field of organic phosphorescence and it may pave a new way for its development.

Resonance-Induced Stimuli-Responsive Capacity Modulation of Organic Ultralong Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Organic ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (OURTP) materials having stimuli-responsive attributes have attracted great attention due to their great potential in a wide variety of advanced applications. It is of fundamental importance but challengeable to develop stimuli-responsive OURTP materials, especially such materials with modulated optoelectronic properties in a controlled manner probably due to the lack of an authentic construction approach. Here, we propose an effective strategy for OURTP materials with controllably regulated stimuli-responsive properties by engineering the resonance linkage between flexible chain and phosphor units. A quantitative parameter to demonstrate the stimuli-responsive capacity is also established by the responsivity rate constant. The designed OURTP materials demonstrate efficient photoactivated OURTP with lifetimes up to 724 ms and tunable responsivity rate constants ranging from 0.132 to 0.308 min^-1 upon continuous UV irradiation. Moreover, the applications of stimuli-responsive resonance OURTP materials have been illustrated by the rewritable paper for snapshot and Morse code for multiple information encryption. Our works, which enable the accomplishment of OURTP materials capable of on-demand manipulated optical properties, demonstrate a viable design to explore smart OURTP materials, giving deep insights into the dynamically stimuli-responsive process.

Mechanical stimuli-induced multiple photophysical responsive AIEgens with high contrast properties

A new cyano-distyrylbenzene derivative with a mechano-force induced high contrast transition in color and emission was demonstrated here. Under mechanical stimuli, the emission peak can undergo a large wavelength shift from 440 nm to 650 nm, while the appearance color can switch from white to pink.

Exciplex-Forming Systems of Physically Mixed and Covalently Bonded Benzoyl-1H-1,2,3-Triazole and Carbazole Moieties for Solution-Processed White OLEDs

Using the newly designed exciplex-forming 1,2,3-triazole-based acceptors with fast and efficient singlet → triplet intersystem crossing (ISC) processes, carbazole and benzoyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthesized by Dimroth-type 1,2,3-triazole ring formation and Ullmann-Goldberg C-N coupling reactions. Due to the exciplex formation between covalently bonded electron-donating (carbazole) and 1,2,3-triazole-based electron-accepting moieties with small singlet-triplet splitting (0.07-0.13 eV), the compounds exhibited ISC-assisted bluish-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence. The compounds were characterized by high triplet energy levels ranging from 2.93 to 2.98 eV. The most efficient exciplex-type thermally activated delayed fluorescence was observed for ortho-substituted carbazole-benzoyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole which was selected as a host in the structure of efficient solution-processed white light-emitting diodes. The best device exhibited a maximum power efficiency of 10.7 lm/W, current efficiency of 18.4 cd/A, and quantum efficiency of 7.1%. This device also showed the highest brightness exceeding 10 thousand cd/m². Usage of the exciplex-forming host allowed us to achieve a low turn-on voltage of 3.6 V. High-quality white electroluminescence was obtained with the close to nature white color coordinates (0.31, 0.34) and a color rendering index of 92.

Halide-containing organic persistent luminescent materials for environmental sensing applications

Great progress has been made in the development of various organic persistent luminescent (OPL) materials in the past few years, and increasing attention has been paid to their interesting applications in environmental sensing due to their long emission lifetimes and high sensitivity. Especially, the introduction of different halogen elements facilitates highly efficient OPL emission with distinct lifetimes and colours. In this review, we summarize the current status of the halide-containing OPL materials for environmental sensing applications. To begin with, the photophysical processes and luminescence mechanisms of OPL materials are expounded in detail to better understand the relationship among molecular structures, OPL properties, and sensing applications. Then, representative halide-containing material systems, such as small molecules, polymers, and doping systems, are summarized with their interesting applications in sensing temperature, oxygen, H₂O, UV light and organic solvents. In addition, several challenges and future research opportunities in this field are discussed. This review aims to provide some reasonable guidance on the material design of OPL sensors and their practical applications, and tries to provide a new perspective on the application direction of organic optoelectronics.

This review presents a summary of the molecular design of halide-containing organic persistent luminescent materials, and their environmental sensing applications.

White Emissions Containing Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Different Excited States of a D-π-A Molecule Depending on the Aggregate States

Development of pure organic molecular materials with room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their applications for white emitters have received significant attentions recently. Herein, a D-π-A molecule (DMACPPY) which can realize white emitting under ambient conditions both in the crystal state and the doped-film state by combining RTP with two fluorescent emissions is reported. The white emission from the crystalline sample of DMACPPY consists fluorescence from S2 (the second excited singlet state) and S1 (the first excited singlet state) along with RTP from T1 (the first excited triplet state), namely, SST-type white light. While, the white emission from the poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) film doped with DMACPPY contains fluorescences from S2 and S1 , and RTP from T2 (the second excited triplet state) rather than T1 (STS type). DMACPPY cannot exhibit white spectrum within alternative crystalline state since inferior RTP intensity despite similar ternary emissions. The results demonstrate that the emissive properties for excited states of DMACPPY can be tuned by changing the aggregate state from crystalline to dispersion state in PMMA film. This new RTP emitter fulfills the talent for white emitting and achieves dual-mode white emissions, invisibly, expands the application range for pure organic and heavy atom-free RTP materials.

Donor–acceptor strategy to construct near infrared AIEgens for cell imaging

A donor–acceptor strategy was applied to construct NIR AIEgens. Six new AIEgens were obtained and among them, DMNIC exhibited the longest emission maximum at 694 nm and was successfully applied for NIR cell imaging.

Water Molecular Bridge-Induced Selective Dual Polarization in Crystals for Stable Multi-Emitter

In the solid state, the molecular polarization of donor–acceptor (D–A) molecules can be implemented in a simple way via the use of an external polarizing source (e.g., an electric field). However, internal chemical polarization approaches are less studied due to difficulties related to controlling the charge-separation orientation in the solid state. Herein, a series of D–A molecules with both a proton donor and an acceptor were designed. Water-based molecular bridges were then established in their crystal structures, which firmly and alternately connected the proton donor of one molecule and the acceptor of another via an intermolecular H-bond network. In this way, the selective dual polarization of a phenolic hydroxyl group and a pyridinyl group could be achieved, owing to the strengthening of the charge-separation orientation upon the simultaneous deprotonation and protonation of the D–A molecules. This effect led to a 3–5-fold amplification of the molecular dipole moment in the crystal form relative to the monomeric state. On this basis, multi-excitation and multi-emission characteristics were achieved in these charge-separated crystals, endowing them with the ability to visually detect the energy of a light source, covering a wide range of the UV-Vis spectral region. This work provides a practical chemical approach for developing intrinsically polarized systems that can exhibit stable but distinct molecular photophysical properties.

Hot-exciton harvesting via through-space single-molecule based white-light emission and optical waveguides

Through-space donor–alkyl bridge–acceptor (D–σ–A) luminogens are developed as new organic single-molecule white light emitters (OSMWLEs) involving multiple higher lying singlet (S_n) and triplet (T_m) states (hot-excitons). Experimental and theoretical results confirm the origin of white light emission due to the co-existence of prompt fluorescence from locally excited states, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and fast/slow dual phosphorescence color mixing simultaneously. Notably, the fast phosphorescence was observed due to trace amounts of isomeric impurities from commercial carbazole, while H-/J-aggregation resulted in slow phosphorescence. Crystal structure-packing-property analysis revealed that the alkyl chain length induced supramolecular self-assembly greatly influenced the solid-state optical properties. Remarkably, the 1D-microrod crystals of OSMWLEs demonstrated the first examples of triplet harvesting waveguides by self-guiding the generated phosphorescence through light propagation along their longitudinal axis. This work thus highlights an uncommon design strategy to achieve multi-functional OSMWLEs with in-depth mechanistic insights and optical waveguiding applications making them a potentially new class of white emissive materials.

High Triplet Energy Level Molecule Enables Highly Efficient Sky-Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

The role of triplet states in the interfacial energy transfer in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has so far not been clarified because of the complex exciton recombination and decay dynamics. This work aims to study this issue and accordingly proposes a novel interfacial-engineering strategy for efficient sky-blue PeLEDs. To this end, bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide with a high triplet energy level is introduced into sky-blue PeLEDs. It effectively reduces undesirable exciton transfer from the perovskite emission layer to the electron-transport layer, largely suppresses exciton quenching at the interface, and simultaneously passivates defects at the perovskite surfaces. As a result of the multichannel energy-loss reduction, sky-blue PeLED that emits at 488 nm is achieved with a peak external quantum efficiency of 10.17% and a maximum brightness of 6728.41 cd m^-2. This work thus provides indirect evidence for the triplet mechanism of blue emission of mixed-halide perovskites and sheds new light on a promising way of boosting the performance of blue PeLEDs.

Unveiling the mechanisms of organic room-temperature phosphorescence in various surrounding environments: a computational study

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from pure organic materials has been promising in next-generation OLEDs. Understanding the photophysical properties of RTP molecules is attractive but challenging. In this study, through a combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method taking 2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione (complex b) as an example, we comparatively investigate the photophysical properties of complex b in diverse environments (solution, crystal, and amorphous). From solution to amorphous to crystal phase, the excited-state decay rates for the molecule indicate that the AIE phenomenon of complex b is mainly induced by the increased phosphorescence rates. However, the increased nonradiative decay rate k_nr of T₁ → S₀ from the solution to the crystal phase could be attributed to the different electron coupling in the crystal phase. Moreover, the theoretical results also show that the small energy gap between the lowest singlet excited state (S₁) and triplet excited state (T₁) and low reorganization energy can help enhance intersystem crossing to facilitate a more competitive radiative process from the T₁ state to ground state (S₀). Additionally, the stronger intermolecular π-π interaction can cause high phosphorescence quantum efficiency in the crystalline phase. Our study presents a rational explanation for aggregation-induced RTP, which is beneficial for the design of new organic RTP materials in the future.

Through-Space Interactions in Clusteroluminescence

Conventional π-conjugated luminophores suffer from problems such as emission quenching, biotoxicity, environmental pollution, etc. The emerging nonconjugated and nonaromatic clusteroluminogens (CLgens) are expected to overcome these stubborn drawbacks, so research of CLgens shows great significance not only for practical application but also for the construction of fundamental photophysical theories. This perspective summarizes the unusual features of CLgens in comparison to traditional chromophores, such as nonconjugated molecular structures, unmatched absorption and excitation, excitation-dependent luminescence, multiple emission peaks, and room-temperature phosphorescence. Different from the theory of through-bond conjugation in π-conjugated luminophores, through-space interactions, including through-space n···n interaction and through-space n···π interaction, are regarded as the emitting sources of nonconjugated CLgens. In addition, the formation of network clusters is proposed as an efficient strategy to improve the performance of CLgens, and their potential applications of anticounterfeiting, photoelectronic devices, and bioimaging are prospected.

Modulating Tri-Mode Emission for Single-Component White Organic Afterglow

Achieving single-component white organic afterglow remains a great challenge owing to the difficulties in simultaneously supporting long-lived emissions from varied excited states of a molecule for complementary afterglow. Here, an extraordinary tri-mode emission from the radiative decays of singlet (S₁ ), triplet (T₁ ), and stabilized triplet (T₁ ^* ) excited states was proposed to afford white afterglow through modulating the singlet-triplet splitting energy (ΔE_ST ) and exciton trapping depth (E_TD ). Low-lying T₁ * for yellow afterglow was constructed by H-aggregation engineering with large E_TD and trace isomer doping, while high-lying T₁ and S₁ for blue afterglow with thermally activated emission feature were realized by reducing ΔE_ST through donor-acceptor molecular design. Therefore, the single-component white afterglow with high efficiency of 14.1 % and a lifetime of 0.61 s was achieved by rationally regulating the afterglow intensity ratios of complementary emissions from S₁ , T₁ , and T₁ *.

Nonconventional luminophores: characteristics, advancements and perspectives

Nonconventional luminophores devoid of remarkable conjugates have attracted considerable attention due to their unique luminescence behaviors, updated luminescence mechanism of organics and promising applications in optoelectronic, biological and medical fields. Unlike classic luminogens consisting of molecular segments with greatly extended electron delocalization, these unorthodox luminophores generally possess nonconjugated structures based on subgroups such as ether (-O-), hydroxyl (-OH), halogens, carbonyl (CO), carboxyl (-COOH), cyano (CN), thioether (-S-), sulfoxide (SO), sulfone (OSO), phosphate, and aliphatic amine, as well as their grouped functionalities like amide, imide, anhydride and ureido. They can exhibit intriguing intrinsic luminescence, generally featuring concentration-enhanced emission, aggregation-induced emission, excitation-dependent luminescence and prevailing phosphorescence. Herein, we review the recent progress in exploring these nonconventional luminophores and discuss the current challenges and future perspectives. Notably, different mechanisms are reviewed and the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism is highlighted, which emphasizes the clustering of the above mentioned electron rich moieties and consequent electron delocalization along with conformation rigidification. The CTE mechanism seems widely applicable for diversified natural, synthetic and supramolecular systems.

Boosting purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence performance through a host-guest strategy

The host-guest doping system has aroused great attention due to its promising advantage in stimulating bright and persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Currently, exploration of the explicit structure-property relationship of bicomponent systems has encountered obstacles. In this work, two sets of heterocyclic isomers showing promising RTP emissions in the solid state were designed and synthesized. By encapsulating these phosphors into a robust phosphorus-containing host, several host-guest cocrystalline systems were further developed, achieving highly efficient RTP performance with a phosphorescence quantum efficiency (ϕ P) of ∼26% and lifetime (τ P) of ∼32 ms. Detailed photophysical characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were conducted to reveal the structure-property relationships in such bicomponent systems. It was verified that other than restricting the molecular configuration, the host matrix could also dilute the guest to avoid concentration quenching and provide an external heavy atom effect for the population of triplet excitons, thus boosting the RTP performance of the guest.

Research progress of full electroluminescent white light-emitting diodes based on a single emissive layer

Carbon neutrality, energy savings, and lighting costs and quality have always led to urgent demand for lighting technology innovation. White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) based on a single emissive layer (SEL) fabricated by the solution method have been continuously researched in recent years; they are advantageous because they have a low cost and are ultrathin and flexible. Here, we reviewed the history and development of SEL-WLEDs over recent years to provide inspiration and promote their progress in lighting applications. We first introduced the emitters and analysed the advantages of these emitters in creating SEL-WLEDs and then reviewed some cases that involve the above emitters, which were formed via vacuum thermal evaporation or solution processes. Some notable developments that deserve attention are highlighted in this review due to their potential use in SEL-WLEDs, such as perovskite materials. Finally, we looked at future development trends of SEL-WLEDs and proposed potential research directions.

Organic Persistent Luminescent Materials: Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Multicolor-Tunable Afterglow

Organic persistent luminescent materials have attracted special attention due to their significant applications in optoelectronics, sensors, and security technology areas. In this work, a series of organic compounds (1-4) with twisted electron donor-acceptor structures are successfully designed and synthesized, and then the resultant compounds are dissolved in methyl methacrylate (MMA), and afterward, in situ polymerization realizes single-molecular organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials (P1-P4). All RTP materials show long lifetime, especially P2 exhibits ultralong lifetime of 1.51 s. When the compounds are grown into single crystals, multicolor-tunable afterglow is obtained at different delay times due to the dual emission of phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence, which is promising to be applied in high-level anticounterfeiting.

Rational design of pyrrole derivatives with aggregation-induced phosphorescence characteristics for time-resolved and two-photon luminescence imaging

Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have been suggested to be promising bioimaging materials due to their good biocompatibility and long emission lifetime. Herein, we report a class of RTP materials. These materials are developed through the simple introduction of an aromatic carbonyl to a tetraphenylpyrrole molecule and also exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. These molecules show non-emission in solution and purely phosphorescent emission in the aggregated state, which are desirable properties for biological imaging. Highly crystalline nanoparticles can be easily fabricated with a long emission lifetime (20 μs), which eliminate background fluorescence interference from cells and tissues. The prepared nanoparticles demonstrate two-photon absorption characteristics and can be excited by near infrared (NIR) light, making them promising materials for deep-tissue optical imaging. This integrated aggregation-induced phosphorescence (AIP) strategy diversifies the existing pool of bioimaging agents to inspire the development of bioprobes in the future.

Selective Expression of a Carbazole-Phenothiazine Derivative Leads to Dual-mode AIEE, TADF and Distinctive Mechanochromism

In this article, we report a newly designed D-A-D' derivative (CNCzPTZ), which displays selective expression of chromophores. This enables CNCzPTZ with solvatochromism, rare dual-mode AIEE properties, solid-state dual-emissions with phosphorescence and distinctive mechanochromism.CNCzPTZ exhibits dual-mode AIEE properties, since the emission band abruptly shifts from 550 nm to 500 nm as the water fraction increases. In the crystalline state, CNCzPTZ demonstrated dual emission bands of 478 nm and 538 nm.CNCzPTZ shows distinctive mechanochromic property in the solid state due to the planarization.

Branched Electron-Donor Core Effect in D-π-A Star-Shaped Small Molecules on Their Properties and Performance in Single-Component and Bulk-Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells †

Star-shaped donor-acceptor molecules are full of promise for organic photovoltaics and electronics. However, the effect of the branching core on physicochemical properties, charge transport and photovoltaic performance of such donor-acceptor materials in single-component (SC) and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells has not been thoroughly addressed. This work shows the comprehensive investigation of six star-shaped donor-acceptor molecules with terminal hexyldicyanovinyl blocks linked through 2,2′-bithiophene π-conjugated bridge to different electron-donating cores such as the pristine and fused triphenylamine, tris(2-methoxyphenyl)amine, carbazole- and benzotriindole-based units. Variation of the branching core strongly impacts on such important properties as the solubility, highest occupied molecular orbital energy, optical absorption, phase behavior, molecular packing and also on the charge-carrier mobility. The performance of SC or BHJ organic solar cells are comprehensively studied and compared. The results obtained provide insight on how to predict and fine-tune photovoltaic performance as well as properties of donor-acceptor star-shaped molecules for organic solar cells.
