Simultaneous nanocatalytic surface activation of pollutants and oxidants for highly efficient water decontamination

Photocatalytically self-cleaning graphene oxide nanofiltration membranes reinforced with bismuth oxybromide for high-performance water purification

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have emerged as promising candidates for water purification applications, owing to their unique physicochemical attributes. Nevertheless, the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, coupled with their vulnerability to membrane fouling, poses significant challenges to their widespread industrial deployment. In this study, we introduce an innovative in-situ growth and layer-by-layer assembly technique for fabricating multilayer GO membranes reinforced with bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) on commonly employed Nylon substrates. This method allows for the creation of two-dimensional lamellar membranes capable of photocatalytic self-cleaning and tunable nanochannel dimensions. The synthesized GO/BiOBr composite membranes exhibit remarkable water permeance rates (approximately 493.9 LMH/bar) and high molecular rejection efficiency (>99 % for Victoria Blue B and Congo Red dyes). Notably, these membranes showcase an enhanced photocatalytic self-cleaning performance upon exposure to visible light. Our work provides a viable route for the fabrication of functionalized GO-based nanofiltration membranes with BiOBr inclusions, offering a synergistic combination of high water permeability, modifiable nanochannels, and effective self-cleaning capabilities through photocatalysis.

Non-radical oxidation driven by iron-based materials without energy assistance in wastewater treatment

Chemical oxidation is extensively utilized to mitigate the impact of organic pollutants in wastewater. The non-radical oxidation driven by iron-based materials is noted for its environmental friendliness and resistance to wastewater matrix, and it is a promising approach for practical wastewater treatment. However, the complexity of heterogeneous systems and the diversity of evolutionary pathways make the mechanisms of non-radical oxidation driven by iron-based materials elusive. This work provides a systematic review of various non-radical oxidation systems driven by iron-based materials, including singlet oxygen (1O2), reactive iron species (RFeS), and interfacial electron transfer. The unique mechanisms by which iron-based materials activate different oxidants (ozone, hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, periodate, and peracetic acid) to produce non-radical oxidation are described. The roles of active sites and the unique structures of iron-based materials in facilitating non-radical oxidation are discussed. Commonly employed identification methods in wastewater treatment are compared, such as quenching, chemical probes, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and electrochemical testing. According to the process of iron-based materials driving non-radical oxidation to remove organic pollutants, the driving factors at different stages are summarized. Finally, challenges and countermeasures are proposed in terms of mechanism exploration, detection methods and practical applications of non-radical oxidation driven by iron-based materials. This work provides valuable insights for understanding and developing non-radical oxidation systems.

Thiadiazol ligand-based laccase-like nanozymes with a high Cu+ ratio for efficient removal of tetracyclines through polymerization

A promising water treatment technology involves inducing the polymerization of organic pollutants to form corresponding polymers, enabling rapid, efficient, and low CO2 emission removal of these pollutants. However, there is currently limited research on utilizing polymerization treatment technology for removing tetracyclines from water. In this study, we synthesized a laccase-mimic nanozyme (Cu-ATZ) with a high Cu+ ratio using 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole as a ligand inspired by natural laccase. The Cu-ATZ exhibited enhanced resistance to more severe application conditions and improved stability compared to natural laccase, thereby demonstrating a broader range of potential applications. The excellent catalytic properties of Cu-ATZ enabled the nanozyme to be used in the polymerization process to remove tetracyclines from water. In order to simulate actual antibiotic pollution of water bodies, tetracyclines were added to the water from sewage treatment plants. Following Cu-ATZ treatment of the water sample, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) content was found to have decreased by over 80 %. In conclusion, this study presented a novel approach for tetracycline elimination from water.

Contribution of complexed Fe(Ⅱ) oxygenation to norfloxacin humification and stabilization: Producing and trapping of more humified products

Organic pollutants polymerization in advanced oxidation processes or environmental matrices has attracted increasing attention, but little is known about stabilization of the polymerization products. The results in this work revealed the contribution of Fe(Ⅱ) oxygenation to stabilization of the products from norfloxacin (NOR) humification. It was found that upon oxygenation of Fe(Ⅱ) complexed by catechol (CT), NOR polymerized into the products with larger molecular weight through nucleophilic addition. Around 83.9-89.7 % organic carbon (OC) can be retained in the reaction solution and the precipitates at different Fe(II)/CT molar ratio. In this system with humification potential, the produced hydroxyl radical (HO•) dominantly modified, instead of decomposed, the structure of transformation products (TPs). TPs with diversified side chains were formed through hydroxylation and ring-opening, leading to the more humified products. In the subsequent Fe(Ⅱ) oxidative precipitation, Fe-TPs composites were formed as spherical particle clusters, which could steadily incorporate OC species with molecular fractionation. Specifically, lignin-like, tannins-like, condensed aromatic and high-molecular-weight TPs were preferentially preserved in the precipitates, while the recalcitrant aliphatic products mainly retained in the solution. These findings shed light on the role of Fe(Ⅱ) oxygenation in stabilizing the products from pollutants humification, which could strengthen both decontamination and organics sequestration.

Selective oxidation behavior based on iron-doped MOF derived carbon-based catalysts: Active site regulation and degradation mechanism analysis

Selective removal of target organic pollutants in complex water quality of municipal sewage is extremely important for the deep treatment of water quality. Here, energetic MOF and Fe-MOF are doped in electrostatic spinning process to adjust the structure and composition of the catalysts, active oxygen species (ROSs), realizing the selective removal of organic pollutants. Non-azo and azo pollutants are selected as target pollutants. Catalysts PCFe-8 with Fe nanoclusters, EPCFe-8 with Fe-Nx, and EPC-8 without Fe doping are used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading pollutants. The results show that the PCFe-8/PMS system can produce the most SO4- and exhibit superior removal of azo pollutants, whereas the degradation behavior of non-azo pollutants is more inclined to occur in the EPCFe-8/PMS system and the EPC-8/PMS system. This work provides a reference for elucidating the relationship between catalyst structure and components, types of ROSs, and selective degradation of pollutants.

The reactivity of organic radicals in the performic, peracetic, perpropionic acids-based advanced oxidation process: A case study of sulfamethoxazole

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peracetic acid (PAA) displayed great potential in removing emerging contaminants by generating HO• and organic radicals. Performic and perpropionic acids (PFA and PPA) also act as disinfectants, but their application potential has not been investigated yet. Here, we investigated the degradation mechanism and kinetics of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by HO•, RC(O)O• species (including HC(O)O•, CH3C(O)O• and CH3CH2C(O)O•) and RC(O)OO• species (including HC(O)OO•, CH3C(O)OO• and CH3CH2C(O)OO•). The results show that the calculated reaction rate constants of SMX follow the order of HC(O)O• > CH3C(O)O• > CH3CH2C(O)O• > HO• > HC(O)OO• > CH3C(O)OO• > CH3CH2C(O)OO•. The reactivity towards SMX is strongly correlated with the redox potentials of reactive radicals. Hence, the RCOO• species play dominant roles in the purification of SMX in PFA/PAA/PPA-based AOPs. The degradation of SMX mainly proceeds via addition at the benzene ring, the hydrogen abstraction from the -NH2 group as well as the single electron transfer reaction. This study highlights the fundamental aspects of PFA, PAA, and PPA in the purification of sulfamethoxazole and enhances the role of organic radicals in the AOPs based on organic peracetic acids.

Hierarchical Anion Exchange and Reverse Electron Transfer in Layered Double Hydroxides/Peroxymonosulfate System for Roxarsone Elimination

Roxarsone (ROX) is the main form of arsenic pollution in the world, and developing effective methods for its elimination is beneficial to human health and the ecological environment. Herein, we report glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan-encapsulated CoCe-LDH (layered double hydroxides) as an outstanding catalyst for the advanced oxidation of ROX and the efficient adsorption of inorganic arsenic. 100% of ROX and more than 98.5% of As(III)/As(V) were eliminated, and over 99.3% of remaining inorganic arsenic was oxidized to low-toxicity As(V) in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system, and some specific properties of LDH are considered the main reasons. The hierarchical anion exchange has been confirmed to be beneficial for constructing a high-concentration PMS interlayer microenvironment. The unique reverse electron transfer process induced 100% selective production of singlet oxygen. This work not only develops an advanced ROX removal method but also provides a new understanding of the LDH-based advanced oxidation process.

Overcoming metals redox rate limitations in spinel oxide-driven Fenton-like reactions via synergistic heteroatom doping and carbon anchoring for efficient micropollutant removal

The transition metals redox rate limitations of spinel oxides during Fenton-like reactions hinder its efficient and sustainable treatment of actual wastewater. Herein, we propose to optimize the electronic structure of Co-Mn spinel oxide (CM) via sulfur doping and carbon matrix anchoring synergistically, enhancing the radicals-nonradicals Fenton-like processes for efficient water decontamination. Activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with optimised spinel oxide (CMSAC) achieved near-complete removal of ofloxacin (10 mg/L) within 6 min, showing 8.4 times higher efficiency than CM group. Significantly higher yields of SO4·- and high-valent metal species in CMSAC/PMS system provided exceptional resistance to co-existing anions, enabling efficient removal of various emerging contaminants in high salinity leachate. Specifically, sulfur coordination and carbon anchoring-induced oxygen vacancy synergistically improved the electronic structure and electron transfer efficiency of CMSAC, thus forming highly reactive Co sites and significantly reducing the energy barrier for Co(IV)=O generation. The reductive sulfur species facilitated the conversion of Co(III) to Co(II), thereby maintaining the stability of the catalytic activity of CMSAC. This work developed a synergistic optimization strategy to overcome the metals redox rate limitations of spinel oxides in Fenton-like reactions, providing deep mechanistic insights for designing Fenton-like catalysts suitable for practical applications.

Functional biochar accelerates peroxymonosulfate activation for organic contaminant degradation via the specific B-C-N configuration

Functional biochar designed with heteroatom doping facilitates the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), triggering both radical and non-radical systems and thus augmenting pollutant degradation efficiency. A sequence of functional biochar, derived from hyperaccumulator (Sedum alfredii) residues, was synthesized via sequential doping with boron and nitrogen. The SABC-B@N-2 exhibited outstanding catalytic effectiveness in activating PMS to degrade the model pollutant, acid orange 7 ( =0.0655 min-1), which was 6.75 times more active than the pristine biochar and achieved notable mineralization efficiency (71.98%) at reduced PMS concentration (0.1 mM). Relative contribution evaluations, using steady-state concentrations combined with electrochemical and in situ Raman analyses, reveal that co-doping with boron and nitrogen alters the reaction pathway, transitioning from PMS activation through multiple reactive oxygen species (ROSs) to a predominantly non-radical process facilitated by electron transfer. Moreover, the previously misunderstood concept that singlet oxygen (1O2) plays a central role in the degradation of AO7 has been clarified. Correlation analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate that the distinct BCN configuration, featuring the BC2O group and pyridinic-N, is fundamental to the active site. This research substantially advances the sustainability of phytoremediation by offering a viable methodology to synthesize highly catalytic functional biochar utilizing hyperaccumulator residues.

Multi-channel electron transfer induced by polyvanadate in metal-organic framework for boosted peroxymonosulfate activation

Catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation processes don't solely rely on electron transfer from dominant metal centers due to the complicated composition and interface environment of catalysts. Herein the synthesis of a cobalt based metal-organic framework containing polyvanadate [V4O12]4- cluster, Co2(V4O12)(bpy)2 (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), is presented. The catalyst demonstrates superior degradation activity toward various micropollutants, with higher highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), via nonradical attack. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Co sites act as both PMS trapper and electron donor. In situ spectral characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that the terminal oxygen atoms in the [V4O12]4- electron sponge could interact with the terminal hydrogen atoms in PMS to form hydrogen bonds, promoting the generation of SO5* intermediate via both dynamic pull and direct electron transfer process. Further, Co2(V4O12)(bpy)2 exhibits long-term water purification ability, up to 40 h, towards actual wastewater discharged from an ofloxacin production factory. This work not only presents an efficient catalyst with an electron sponge for water environmental remediation via nonradical pathway, but also provides fundamental insights into the Fenton-like reaction mechanism.

Overlooked Roles and Transformation of Carbon-Centered Radicals Produced from Natural Organic Matter in a Thermally Activated Persulfate System

The presence and induced secondary reactions of natural organic matter (NOM) significantly affect the remediation efficacy of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) systems. However, it remains unclear how this process relates to organic radicals generated from reactions between the NOM and oxidants. The study, for the first time, reported the vital roles and transformation pathways of carbon-centered radicals (CCR•) derived from NOM in activated persulfate (PS) systems. Results showed that both typical terrestrial/aquatic NOM isolates and collected NOM samples produced CCR• by scavenging activated PS and greatly enhanced the dehalogenation performance under anoxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, newly formed CCR• could be oxidized by O2 and generate organic peroxide intermediates (ROO•) to catalytically yield additional •OH without the involvement of PS. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) results indicated that CCR• predominantly formed from carboxyl and aliphatic structures instead of aromatics within NOM through hydrogen abstraction and decarboxylation reactions by SO4•- or •OH. Specific anoxic reactions (i.e., dehalogenation and intramolecular cross-coupling reactions) further promoted the transformation of CCR• to more unsaturated and polymerized/condensed compounds. In contrast, oxic propagation of ROO• enhanced bond breakage/ring cleavage and degradation of CCR• due to the presence of additional •OH and self-decomposition. This study provides novel insights into the role of NOM and O2 in ISCO and the development of engineered strategies for creating organic radicals capable of enhancing the remediation of specific contaminants and recovering organic carbon.

Natural Attenuation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol in Fe-Rich Soil during Redox Oscillations: Anoxic-Oxic Coupling Mechanism

Natural attenuation of organic contaminants can occur under anoxic or oxic conditions. However, the effect of the coupling anoxic-oxic process, which often happens in subsurface soil, on contaminant transformation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) transformation in Fe-rich soil under anoxic-oxic alternation. The anoxic and oxic periods in the alternating system showed faster 2,4-DCP transformation than the corresponding control single anoxic and oxic systems; therefore, a higher transformation rate (63.4%) was obtained in the alternating system relative to control systems (27.9-42.4%). Compared to stable pH in the alternating system, the control systems presented clear OH- accumulation, caused by more Fe(II) regeneration in the control anoxic system and longer oxygenation in the control oxic system. Since 2,4-DCP was transformed by ion exchangeable Fe(II) in soil via direct reduction in the anoxic process and induced ·OH oxidation in the oxic process, OH- accumulation was unbeneficial because it competed for proton with direct reduction and inhibited •OH generation via complexing with Fe(II). However, the alternating system exhibited OH--buffering capacity via anoxic-oxic coupling processes because the subsequent oxic periods intercepted Fe(II) regeneration in anoxic periods, while shorter exposure to O2 in oxic periods avoided excessive OH- generation. These findings highlight the significant role of anoxic-oxic alternation in contaminant attenuation persistently.

Selective adsorption of high ionization potential value organic pollutants in wastewater

It is imperative to devise effective removal strategies for high ionization potential (IP) organic pollutants in wastewater as their reduced electron-donating capacity challenges the efficiency of advanced oxidation systems in degradation. Against this backdrop, leveraging the metal-based carbon material structure meticulously, we employed metal-pyridine-N (M-N-C, M=Fe, Co, and Ni) as the electron transfer bridge. This distinctive design facilitated the ordered transfer of electrons from the adsorbent surface to the surface of high IP value pollutants, acting as a "supplement" to compensate for their deficient electron-donating capability, thereby culminating in the selective adsorption of these pollutants. Furthermore, this adsorbent also demonstrated effective removal of trace emerging contaminants (2 mg/L), displayed robust resistance to various salts, exhibited reusability, and maintained stability. These findings carry substantial implications for future carbon-based material design, offering a pathway toward exceptional adsorption performance in treating water pollution.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of electrons donated by pollutants in electron transfer-based oxidation system: Electrochemical measurement and theoretical calculations

In order to gain a profound understanding of the fate of pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), this study analyzed the electron contribution of pollutants qualitatively and quantitatively which rarely reported before. The rich electron transfer system was constructed by mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) coupling with persulfate (PS) driven by visible light and the sulfanilamide antibiotics (SULs) were used as target contaminants. Firstly, the qualitative analysis of electron transfer in the system was confirmed systematically. The electron flow direction tested by i-t curves indicated that PS absorbed electrons, while SULs released electrons. The flow rate of electrons was also accelerated after the addition of SULs. The fitting curve between the kinetics and the peak potential difference tested by CV curve showed that the larger potential difference, the slower rate of oxidative degradation. Secondly, the quantification of electron transfer was achieved through theoretical calculations to simulate the interactions of the 'catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic' system. After the addition of SULs, the adsorption energy of the 'catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic' system was enhanced and the bond length of the peroxide bond was stretched. Notably, the electron transfer analysis results showed that the charge of SULs was around 0.032-0.056e, indicating that SULs pollutants played the role of electron contributors in the system. The oxidative degradation pathway included the direct cracking of S-N bond, shedding of marginal groups, ring-opening and hydroxyl addition reaction. This study clarified the electronic contribution of SULs in the oxidation system, providing necessary theoretical supplement for the analysis of the transformation of pollutants in AOPs.

Direct Electron Transfer-Driven Nontoxic Oligomeric Deposition of Sulfonamide Antibiotics onto Carbon Materials for In Situ Water Remediation

The rising in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technologies based on polymerization reactions have advanced the removal of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. However, despite their promise, uncertainties persist regarding their effectiveness in eliminating structurally complex contaminants, such as sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). This study elucidated that oligomerization, rather than mineralization, predominantly governs the removal of SAs in the carbon materials/periodate system. The amine groups in SAs played a crucial role in forming organic radicals and subsequent coupling reactions due to their high f- index and low bond orders. Moreover, the study highlighted the robust adhesion of oligomers to the catalyst surface, facilitated by enhanced van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. Importantly, plant and animal toxicity assessments confirmed the nontoxic nature of oligomers deposited on the carbon material surface, affirming the efficacy of carbon material-based ISCO in treating contaminated surface water and groundwater. Additionally, a novel classification approach, Δlog k, was proposed to differentiate SAs based on their kinetic control steps, providing deeper insights into the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) and facilitating the selection of optimal descriptors during the oligomerization processes. Overall, these insights significantly enhance our understanding of SAs removal via oligomerization and demonstrate the superiority of C-ISCO based on polymerization in water decontamination.

Transformation of metoprolol in UV/PDS process: Role and mechanisms of degradation and polymerization

Advanced oxidation processes for the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater suffer from difficulties in mineralization, potential risks of dissolved residues, and high oxidant consumption. In this study, radical-initiated polymerization is dominated in an UV/peroxydisulfate (PDS) process to eliminate organic pollutant of pharmaceutical metoprolol (MTP). Compared with an ideal degradation-based UV/PDS process, the present process can save four fifths of PDS consumption at the same dissolved organic carbon removal of 47.3%. Simultaneously, organic carbon can be recovered from aqueous solution by separating solid polymers at a ratio of 50% of the initial chemical oxygen demand. The chemical structure of products was analyzed to infer the transformation pathways of MTP. Unlike previous studies on simple organic pollutants that the polymerization can occur independently, the polymerization of MTP is dependent on the partial degradation of MTP, and the main monomer in polymerization is a dominant degradation product (4-(2-methoxyethyl)-phenol, denoted as DP151). The separated solid polymers are formed by repeated oxidation and coupling of DP151 or its derivatives through a series of intermediate oligomers. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the advantage of polymerization-dominated mechanism on dealing with large organic molecules with complex structures, as well as the potential of UV/PDS process for simultaneous organic pollution reduction and organic carbon recovery from aqueous solution.

Nanobubbles improve peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation: High efficiency, low toxicity/cost, and novel collaborative mechanism

Cl- activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation technology can effectively degrade pollutants, but the generation of chlorinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) limits the application of this technology in water treatment. In this study, a method of nanobubbles (NBs) synergistic Cl-/PMS system was designed to try to improve this technology. The results showed the synergistic effects of NBs/Cl-/PMS were significant and universal while its upgrade rate was from 12.89% to 34.97%. Moreover, the synergistic effects can be further improved by increasing the concentration and Zeta potential of NBs. The main synergistic effects of NBs/Cl-/PMS system were due to the electrostatic attraction of negatively charged NBs to Na+ from NaCl, K+ from PMS, and H+ from phenol, which acted as a "bridge" between Cl- and HSO5- as well as phenol and Cl-/HSO5-, increasing active substance concentration. In addition, the addition of NBs completely changed the oxidation system of Cl-/PMS from one that increases environmental toxicity to one that reduces it. The reason was that the electrostatic attraction of NBs changed the active sites and degradation pathway of phenol, greatly reducing the production of highly toxic DBPs. This study developed a novel environmentally friendly oxidation technology, which provides an effective strategy to reduce the generation of DBPs in the Cl-/PMS system.

Size-Dependent Catalysis in Fenton-like Chemistry: From Nanoparticles to Single Atoms

State-of-the-art Fenton-like reactions are crucial in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification. This review explores the latest advancements in heterogeneous metal-based catalysts within AOPs, covering nanoparticles (NPs), single-atom catalysts (SACs), and ultra-small atom clusters. A distinct connection between the physical properties of these catalysts, such as size, degree of unsaturation, electronic structure, and oxidation state, and their impacts on catalytic behavior and efficacy in Fenton-like reactions. In-depth comparative analysis of metal NPs and SACs is conducted focusing on how particle size variations and metal-support interactions affect oxidation species and pathways. The review highlights the cutting-edge characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, indispensable for deciphering the complex electronic and structural characteristics of active sites in downsized metal particles. Additionally, the review underscores innovative strategies for immobilizing these catalysts onto membrane surfaces, offering a solution to the inherent challenges of powdered catalysts. Recent advances in pilot-scale or engineering applications of Fenton-like-based devices are also summarized for the first time. The paper concludes by charting new research directions, emphasizing advanced catalyst design, precise identification of reactive oxygen species, and in-depth mechanistic studies. These efforts aim to enhance the application potential of nanotechnology-based AOPs in real-world wastewater treatment.

Oxygen-Centered Organic Radicals-Involved Unified Heterogeneous Self-Fenton Process for Stable Mineralization of Micropollutants in Water

Removing organic micropollutants from water through photocatalysis is hindered by catalyst instability and substantial residuals from incomplete mineralization. Here, a novel water treatment paradigm, the unified heterogeneous self-Fenton process (UHSFP), which achieved an impressive 32% photon utilization efficiency at 470 nm, and a significant 94% mineralization of organic micropollutants-all without the continual addition of oxidants and iron ions is presented. In UHSFP, the active species differs fundamentally from traditional photocatalytic processes. One electron acceptor unit of photocatalyst acquires only one photogenerated electron to convert into oxygen-centered organic radical (OCOR), then spontaneously completing subsequent processes, including pollutant degradation, hydrogen peroxide generation, activation, and mineralization of organic micropollutants. By bolstering electron-transfer capabilities and diminishing catalyst affinity for oxygen in the photocatalytic process, the generation of superoxide radicals is effectively suppressed, preventing detrimental attacks on the catalyst. This study introduces an innovative and cost-effective strategy for the efficient and stable mineralization of organic micropollutants, eliminating the necessity for continuous chemical inputs, providing a new perspective on water treatment technologies.

Prehydrated Electrons Activated by Continuous Electron Transfer Stemmed from Peracetic Acid Homolysis Mediated by Diamond Surface Defects for Enhanced PFOA Destruction

Research on the use of peracetic acid (PAA) activated by nonmetal solid catalysts for the removal of dissolved refractory organic compounds has gained attention recently due to its improved efficiency and suitability for advanced water treatment (AWT). Among these catalysts, nanocarbon (NC) stands out as an exceptional example. In the NC-based peroxide AWT studies, the focus on the mechanism involving multimedia coordination on the NC surface (reactive species (RS) path, electron reduction non-RS pathway, and singlet oxygen non-RS path) has been confined to the one-step electron reaction, leaving the mechanisms of multichannel or continuous electron transfer paths unexplored. Moreover, there are very few studies that have identified the nonfree radical pathway initiated by electron transfer within PAA AWT. In this study, the complete decomposition (kobs = 0.1995) and significant defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, deF% = 72%) through PAA/NC has been confirmed. Through the use of multiple electrochemical monitors and the exploration of current diffusion effects, the process of electron reception and conduction stimulated by PAA activation was examined, leading to the discovery of the dynamic process from the PAA molecule → NC solid surface → target object. The vital role of prehydrated electrons (epre-) before the entry of resolvable electrons into the aqueous phase was also detailed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance of identifying the nonradical mechanism of continuous electron transfer in PAA-based AWT, which deviates from the previously identified mechanisms of singlet oxygen, single-electron, or double-electron single-path transfer. The pathway, along with the strong reducibility of epre- initiated by this pathway, has been proven to be essential in reducing the need for catalysts and chemicals in AWT.

Nanoconfinement steers nonradical pathway transition in single atom fenton-like catalysis for improving oxidant utilization

The introduction of single-atom catalysts (SACs) into Fenton-like oxidation promises ultrafast water pollutant elimination, but the limited access to pollutants and oxidant by surface catalytic sites and the intensive oxidant consumption still severely restrict the decontamination performance. While nanoconfinement of SACs allows drastically enhanced decontamination reaction kinetics, the detailed regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we unveil that, apart from local enrichment of reactants, the catalytic pathway shift is also an important cause for the reactivity enhancement of nanoconfined SACs. The surface electronic structure of cobalt site is altered by confining it within the nanopores of mesostructured silica particles, which triggers a fundamental transition from singlet oxygen to electron transfer pathway for 4-chlorophenol oxidation. The changed pathway and accelerated interfacial mass transfer render the nanoconfined system up to 34.7-fold higher pollutant degradation rate and drastically raised peroxymonosulfate utilization efficiency (from 61.8% to 96.6%) relative to the unconfined control. It also demonstrates superior reactivity for the degradation of other electron-rich phenolic compounds, good environment robustness, and high stability for treating real lake water. Our findings deepen the knowledge of nanoconfined catalysis and may inspire innovations in low-carbon water purification technologies and other heterogeneous catalytic applications.

M-N3 Configuration on Boron Nitride Boosts Singlet Oxygen Generation via Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Selective Oxidation

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is an essential reactive species responsible for selective oxidation of organic matter, especially in Fenton-like processes. However, due to the great limitations in synthesizing catalysts with well-defined active sites, the controllable production and practical application of 1O2 remain challenging. Herein, guided by theoretical simulations, a series of boron nitride-based single-atom catalysts (BvBN/M, M=Co, Fe, Cu, Ni and Mn) were synthesized to regulate 1O2 generation by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). All the fabricated BvBN/M catalysts with explicit M-N3 sites promoted the self-decomposition of the two PMS molecules to generate 1O2 with high selectivity, where BvBN/Co possessed moderate adsorption energy and d-band center exhibited superior catalytic activity. As an outcome, the BvBN/Co-PMS system coupled with membrane filtration technology could continuously transform aromatic alcohols to aldehydes with nearly 100 % selectivity and conversion rate under mild conditions, suggesting the potential of this novel catalytic system for green organic synthesis.

Were Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes Really Understood? Basic Concepts, Cognitive Biases, and Experimental Details

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for pollutant removal have attracted extensive interest, but some controversies about the identification of reactive species were usually observed. This critical review aims to comprehensively introduce basic concepts and rectify cognitive biases and appeals to pay more attention to experimental details in PS-AOPs, so as to accurately explore reaction mechanisms. The review scientifically summarizes the character, generation, and identification of different reactive species. It then highlights the complexities about the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance, the uncertainties about the use of probes and scavengers, and the necessities about the determination of scavenger concentration. The importance of the choice of buffer solution, operating mode, terminator, and filter membrane is also emphasized. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives to alleviate the misinterpretations toward reactive species and reaction mechanisms in PS-AOPs.

The design engineering of nanocatalysts for high power redox flow batteries

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are one of the most promising long-term energy storage technologies which utilize the redox reaction of active species to realize charge and discharge. With the decoupled power and energy components, RFBs exhibit high battery pile construction flexibility and long lifespan. However, the inherent slow electrochemical kinetics of the current widely applied redox active species severely impedes the power output of RFBs. Developing high performance electrocatalysts for these redox active species would boost the power output and energy efficiency of RFBs. Here, we present a critical review of nanoelectrocatalysts to improve the sluggish kinetics of different redox active species, mainly including the chemical components, structure and integration methods. The relationship between the physicochemical properties of nanoelectrocatalysts and the power output of RFBs is highlighted. Finally, the future design of nanoelectrocatalysts for commercial RFBs is proposed.

From waste corn straw to graphitic porous carbon: A trade-off between specific surface area and graphitization degree for efficient peroxydisulfate activation

Electron transfer pathways have been verified as overriding regimes when peroxydisulfate (PDS) was activated by porous carbon. The incorporation of graphitic structure into carbon matrix was favorable to the rapid electron transfer, but excessive graphitization would deteriorate the specific surface area (SSA), weakening the catalytic performance. The reasonable trade-off between SSA and graphitization degree was necessary and challenging for the preparation of efficient carbon based PS-activators. Herein, a series of graphitic porous carbon with discrepant SSA and graphitic structure were fabricated. The incorporation of graphitization tracks into ultra-thin edges on porous carbon film was verified by multifarious structural characterization. After trade-off, the optimum catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance with degradation rate constant (kobs) exceeding that of ungraphitized precursor by up to 16.0 times. Mechanistic investigations substantiated that the sufficient SSA of catalyst provided favorable conditions for its affinity towards PDS and sulfadiazine (SDZ), resulting in the formation of PDS* complexes and SDZ adsorption, while the appropriate graphitization degree ensured the reinforced electron transfer rate, which collectively accelerated SDZ oxidation through electron-transfer pathway. The multivariate linear regression model linking kobs to SSA and graphitization degree was established providing basis to construct efficient catalysts for PDS activation.

Oxidative polymerization versus degradation of organic pollutants in heterogeneous catalytic persulfate chemistry

Catalytic polymerization pathways in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have recently drawn much attention for organic pollutant elimination owing to the rapid removal kinetics, high selectivity, and recovery of organic carbon from wastewater. This work presents a review on the polymerization regimes in AOPs and their applications in wastewater decontamination. The review mainly highlights three critical issues in polymerization reactions induced by persulfate activation (Poly-PS-AOPs), including heterogeneous catalysts, persulfate activation pathways, and properties of organic substrates. The dominant influencing factors on the selection of catalysts, activation regimes of reactive oxygen species, and polymerization processes of organic substrates are discussed in detail. Moreover, we systematically demonstrate the merits and challenges of Poly-PS-AOPs upon pollutant degradation and polymer synthesis. We particularly highlight that Poly-PS-AOPs technology could be promising in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing heterocyclic organics and the synthesis of polymers and polymer-functionalized materials for advanced environmental and energy applications.

Advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment - Guidance for systematic future research

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a growing research field with a large variety of different process variants and materials being tested at laboratory scale. However, despite extensive research in recent years and decades, many variants have not been transitioned to pilot- and full-scale operation. One major concern are the inconsistent experimental approaches applied across different studies that impede identification, comparison, and upscaling of the most promising AOPs. The aim of this tutorial review is to streamline future studies on the development of new solutions and materials for advanced oxidation by providing guidance for comparable and scalable oxidation experiments. We discuss recent developments in catalytic, ozone-based, radiation-driven, and other AOPs, and outline future perspectives and research needs. Since standardized experimental procedures are not available for most AOPs, we propose basic rules and key parameters for lab-scale evaluation of new AOPs including selection of suitable probe compounds and scavengers for the measurement of (major) reactive species. A two-phase approach to assess new AOP concepts is proposed, consisting of (i) basic research and proof-of-concept (technology readiness levels (TRL) 1-3), followed by (ii) process development in the intended water matrix including a cost comparison with an established process, applying comparable and scalable parameters such as UV fluence or ozone consumption (TRL 3-5). Subsequent demonstration of the new process (TRL 6-7) is briefly discussed, too. Finally, we highlight important research tools for a thorough mechanistic process evaluation and risk assessment including screening for transformation products that should be based on chemical logic and combined with complementary tools (mass balance, chemical calculations).

Atomically dispersed cobalt activator with nitrogen and sulfur co-coordination for high-efficiency Fenton-like catalysis: Insights into density-dependent activity and mechanisms

Atomically dispersed metal activators (ADMAs) have demonstrated unique advantages in environmental remediation, but how to controllably regulate the active site density and electronic structure of ADMAs to further enhance activation efficiency remains challenging. Here, we introduce a sulfur-atom-doping approach that allows the fine-tuning of atomic Co site content and electronic structure, enabling exploration of density-dependent activation performance of ADMAs for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like catalysis. Our investigation reveals a direct correlation between activation capacity and single-Co-site density. The optimal SNC@CoSA-0.05 activator with densely populated Co-N3S1 sites (10.1 wt%) displays exceptional efficacy in eliminating Rhodamine B, with specific activity of 31.0 min-1 g-1 L, outperforming most previously published activators. Moreover, SNC@CoSA-0.05 showed a remarkedly reduced metal leaching (47.4 μg L-1) than its nanocluster counterpart (194 μg L-1) at pH 3.2. Experimental and theoretical analyses unveiled that coordinated sulfur actively modulates the electronic structure of the central Co atom, enhancing the adsorption and activation of PMS, thereby improving decontamination efficiency. Mechanistic studies further elucidate the predominant electron-transfer regime involved in oxidizing micropollutants by SNC@CoSA-0.05/PMS, with Co(IV)=O, •OH, and SO4•- being the auxiliary oxidizing species. This study not only offers a method for concurrent adjustment of active site density and electronic structure in ADMAs but also sheds light on the activation mechanisms of atomic metal sites.

Fenton-like membrane reactor assembled by electron polarization and defect engineering modifying Co3O4 spinel for flow-through removal of organic contaminants

The application of Fenton-like membrane reactors for water purification offers a promising solution to overcome technical challenges associated with catalyst recovery, reaction efficiency, and mass transfer typically encountered in heterogeneous batch reaction modes. This study presents a dual-modification strategy encompassing electron polarization and defect engineering to synthesize Al-doped and oxygen vacancies (OV)-enriched Co3O4 spinel catalysts (ACO-OV). This modification empowered ACO-OV with exceptional performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic contaminants. Moreover, the ACO-OV@polyethersulfone (PES) membrane/PMS system achieved organic contaminant removal through filtration (with a reaction kinetic constant of 0.085 ms-1), demonstrating outstanding resistance to environmental interference and high operational stability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the exceptional catalytic performance of this Fenton-like membrane reactor stemmed from the enrichment of reactants, exposure of reactive sites, and enhanced mass transfer within the confined space, leading to a higher availability of reactive species. Theoretical calculations were conducted to validate the beneficial intrinsic effects of electron polarization, defect engineering, and the confined space within the membrane reactor on PMS activation and organic contaminant removal. Notably, the ACO-OV@PES membrane/PMS system not only mineralized the targeted organic contaminants but also effectively mitigated their potential environmental risks. Overall, this work underscores the significant potential of the dual-modification strategy in designing spinel catalysts and Fenton-like membrane reactors for efficient organic contaminant removal.

Facet-Dependent Fe2O3/BiVO4(110)/BiVO4(010)/Fe2O3 Dual S-Scheme Photocatalyst as an Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Norfloxacin Degradation

A lack of eco-friendly, highly active photocatalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and unclear environmental risks are significant challenges. Herein, we developed a double S-scheme Fe2O3/BiVO4(110)/BiVO4(010)/Fe2O3 photocatalyst to activate PMS and investigated its impact on wheat seed germination. We observed an improvement in charge separation by depositing Fe2O3 on the (010) and (110) surfaces of BiVO4. This enhancement is attributed to the formation of a dual S-scheme charge transfer mechanism at the interfaces of Fe2O3/BiVO4(110) and BiVO4(010)/Fe2O3. By introducing PMS into the system, photogenerated electrons effectively activate PMS, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4·-). Among the tested systems, the 20% Fe2O3/BiVO4/Vis/PMS system exhibits the highest catalytic efficiency for norfloxacin (NOR) removal, reaching 95% in 40 min. This is twice the catalytic efficiency of the Fe2O3/BiVO4/PMS system, 1.8 times that of the Fe2O3/BiVO4 system, and 5 times that of the BiVO4 system. Seed germination experiments revealed that Fe2O3/BiVO4 heterojunction was beneficial for wheat seed germination, while PMS had a significant negative effect. This study provides valuable insights into the development of efficient and sustainable photocatalytic systems for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Efficient Homolytic Cleavage of H2O2 on Hydroxyl-Enriched Spinel CuFe2O4 with Dual Lewis Acid Sites

Traditional H2O2 cleavage mediated by macroscopic electron transfer (MET) not only has low utilization of H2O2, but also sacrifices the stability of catalysts. We present a non-redox hydroxyl-enriched spinel (CuFe2O4) catalyst with dual Lewis acid sites to realize the homolytic cleavage of H2O2. The results of systematic experiments, in situ characterizations, and theoretical calculations confirm that tetrahedral Cu sites with optimal Lewis acidity and strong electron delocalization can synergistically elongate the O-O bonds (1.47 Å → 1.87 Å) in collaboration with adjacent bridging hydroxyl (another Lewis acid site). As a result, the free energy of H2O2 homolytic cleavage is decreased (1.28 eV → 0.98 eV). H2O2 can be efficiently split into ⋅OH induced by hydroxyl-enriched CuFe2O4 without MET, which greatly improves the catalyst stability and the H2O2 utilization (65.2 %, nearly 2 times than traditional catalysts). The system assembled with hydroxyl-enriched CuFe2O4 and H2O2 affords exceptional performance for organic pollutant elimination. The scale-up experiment using a continuous flow reactor realizes long-term stability (up to 600 mL), confirming the tremendous potential of hydroxyl-enriched CuFe2O4 for practical applications.

Heteroatom substitution enhances generation and reactivity of surface-activated peroxydisulfate complexes for catalytic fenton-like reactions

Peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based Fenton-like reactions are promising advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to degrade recalcitrant organic water pollutants. Current research predominantly focuses on augmenting the generation of reactive species (e.g., surface-activated PDS complexes (PDS*) to improve treatment efficiency, but overlooks the potential benefits of enhancing the reactivity of these species. Here, we enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity by incorporating Zn into CuO catalyst lattice, which resulted in 99% degradation of 4-chlorophenol within only 10 min. Zn increased PDS* generation by nearly doubling PDS adsorption while maintaining similar PDS to PDS* conversion efficiency, and induced higher PDS* reactivity than the common catalyst CuO, as indicated by a 4.1-fold larger slope between adsorbed PDS and open circuit potential of a catalytic electrode. Cu-O-Zn formation upshifts the d-band center of Cu sites and lowers the energy barrier for PDS adsorption and sulfate desorption, resulting in enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity. Overall, this study informs strategies to enhance PDS* reactivity and design highly active catalysts for efficient AOPs.

Carbon redirection via tunable Fenton-like reactions under nanoconfinement toward sustainable water treatment

The ongoing pattern shift in water treatment from pollution control to energy recovery challenges the energy-intensive chemical oxidation processes that have been developed for over a century. Redirecting the pathways of carbon evolution from molecular fragmentation to polymerization is critical for energy harvesting during chemical oxidation, yet the regulation means remain to be exploited. Herein, by confining the widely-studied oxidation system-Mn3O4 catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate-inside amorphous carbon nanotubes (ACNTs), we demonstrate that the pathways of contaminant conversion can be readily modulated by spatial nanoconfinement. Reducing the pore size of ACNTs from 120 to 20 nm monotonously improves the pathway selectivity toward oligomers, with the yield one order of magnitude higher under 20-nm nanoconfinement than in bulk. The interactions of Mn3O4 with ACNTs, reactant enrichment, and pH lowering under nanoconfinement are evidenced to collectively account for the enhanced selectivity toward polymerization. This work provides an adaptive paradigm for carbon redirection in a variety of catalytic oxidation processes toward energy harvesting and sustainable water purification.

Transformative Removal of Aqueous Micropollutants into Polymeric Products by Advanced Oxidation Processes

This perspective presents the latest advancements in selective polymerization pathways in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removal of featured organic pollutants in wastewater. In radical-based homogeneous reactions, SO4• --based systems exhibit superior oxidative activity toward aromatics with electron-donating substituents via single electron transfer and radical adduct formation (RAF). The produced organic radical cations subsequently undergo coupling and polymerization reactions to produce polymers. For •OH-based oxidation, metal ions facilitate the production of monomer radicals via RAF. Additionally, heterogeneous catalysts can mediate both coupling and polymerization reactions via persulfate activation without generating inorganic radicals. Metal-based catalysts will mediate a direct oxidation pathway toward polymerization. In contrast, carbon-based catalysts will induce coupling reactions to produce low-molecular-weight oligomers (≤4 units) via an electron transfer process. In comparison to mineralization, polymerization pathways remarkably reduce peroxide usage, quickly separate pollutants from the aqueous phase, and generate polymeric byproducts. Thus, AOP-driven polymerization systems hold significant promise in reducing carbon emission and realizing carbon recycling in water treatment processes.

Tailoring d-band center of high-valent metal-oxo species for pollutant removal via complete polymerization

Polymerization-driven removal of pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) offers a sustainable way for the simultaneous achievement of contamination abatement and resource recovery, supporting a low-carbon water purification approach. However, regulating such a process remains a great challenge due to the insufficient microscopic understanding of electronic structure-dependent reaction mechanisms. Herein, this work probes the origin of catalytic pollutant polymerization using a series of transition metal (Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe) single-atom catalysts and identifies the d-band center of active site as the key driver for polymerization transfer of pollutants. The high-valent metal-oxo species, produced via peroxymonosulfate activation, are found to trigger the pollutant removal via polymerization transfer. Phenoxyl radicals, identified by the innovative spin-trapping and quenching approaches, act as the key intermediate in the polymerization reactions. More importantly, the oxidation capacity of high-valent metal-oxo species can be facilely tuned by regulating their binding strength for peroxymonosulfate through d-band center modulation. A 100% polymerization transfer ratio is achieved by lowering the d-band center. This work presents a paradigm to dynamically modulate the electronic structure of high-valent metal-oxo species and optimize pollutant removal from wastewater via polymerization.

Degradation and mechanism of PFOA by peroxymonosulfate activated by nitrogen-doped carbon foam-anchored nZVI in aqueous solutions

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging pollutant that is non-biodegradable and presents severe environmental and human health risks. In this study, we present an effective and mild approach for PFOA degradation that involves the use of nitrogen-doped carbon foam anchored with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI@NCF) to activate low concentration peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment. The nZVI@NCF/PMS system efficiently removed 84.4% of PFOA (2.4 μM). The active sites of nZVI@NCF including Fe0 (110) and graphitic nitrogen played crucial roles in the degradation. Electrochemical analyses and density functional theory calculations revealed that nZVI@NCF acted as an electronic donor, transferring electrons to both PMS and PFOA during the reaction. By further analyzing the electron paramagnetic resonance and byproducts, it was determined that electron transfer and singlet oxygen were responsible for PFOA degradation. Three degradation pathways involving decarboxylation and surface reduction of PFOA in the nZVI@NCF/PMS system were determined. Finding from this study indicate that nZVI@NCF/PMS systems are effective in degrading PFOA and thus present a promising persulfate-advanced oxidation process technology for PFAS treatment.

Selective electrocatalytic transformation of highly toxic phenols in wastewater to para-benzoquinone at ambient conditions

The selective transformation of organics from wastewater to value-added chemicals is considered an upcycling process beneficial for carbon neutrality. Herein, we present an innovative electrocatalytic oxidation (ECO) system aimed at achieving the selective conversion of phenols in wastewater to para-benzoquinone (p-BQ), a valuable chemical widely utilized in the manufacturing and chemical industries. Notably, 96.4% of phenol abatement and 78.9% of p-BQ yield are synchronously obtained over a preferred carbon cloth-supported ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru/C) anode. Such unprecedented results stem from the weak Ru-O bond between the Ru active sites and generated p-BQ, which facilitates the desorption of p-BQ from the anode surface. This property not only prevents the excessive oxidation of the generated p-BQ but also reinstates the Ru active sites essential for the rapid ECO of phenol. Furthermore, this ECO system operates at ambient conditions and obviates the need for potent chemical oxidants, establishing a sustainable avenue for p-BQ production. Importantly, the system efficacy can be adaptable in actual phenol-containing coking wastewater, highlighting its potential practical application prospect. As a proof of concept, we construct an electrified Ru/C membrane for ECO of phenol, attaining phenol removal of 95.8% coupled with p-BQ selectivity of 73.1%, which demonstrates the feasibility of the ECO system in a scalable flow-through operation mode. This work provides a promising ECO strategy for realizing both phenols removal and valuable organics recovery from phenolic wastewater.

Understanding the Distance Effect of the Single-Atom Active Sites in Fenton-Like Reactions for Efficient Water Remediation

Emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising in water remediation through Fenton-like reactions. Despite the notable enhancement of catalytic activity through increasing the density of single-atom active sites, the performance improvement is not solely attributed to the increase in the number of active sites. The variation of catalytic behaviors stemming from the increased atomic density is particularly elusive and deserves an in-depth study. Herein, single-atom Fe catalysts (FeSA-CN) with different distances (dsite) between the adjacent single-atom Fe sites are constructed by controlling Fe loading. With the decrease in dsite value, remarkably enhanced catalytic activity of FeSA-CN is realized via the electron transfer regime with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The decrease in dsite value promotes electronic communication and further alters the electronic structure in favor of PMS activation. Moreover, the two adjacent single-atom Fe sites collectively adsorb PMS and achieve single-site desorption of the PMS decomposition products, maintaining continuous PMS activation and contaminant removal. Moreover, the FeSA-CN/PMS system exhibits excellent anti-interference performance for various aquatic systems and good durability in continuous-flow experiments, indicating its great potential for water treatment applications. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the distance effect of single-atom active sites on water remediation by designing densely populated SACs.

Decoupled oxidation process enabled by atomically dispersed copper electrodes for in-situ chemical water treatment

In-situ wastewater treatment has gained popularity due to cost and energy savings tailored to water sources and user needs. However, this treatment, particularly through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), poses ecological risks due to the need for strong oxidizing agents. Here, we present a decoupled oxidation process (DOP) using single-atom copper-modified graphite felt electrodes. This process creates a positive potential difference (ΔE ~ 0.5 V) between spatially isolated oxidants and organics and drives electron transfer-based redox reactions. The approach avoids the drawbacks of conventional AOPs, while being capable of treating various recalcitrant electron-rich organics. A floating water treatment device designed based on the DOP approach can degrade organic molecules in large bodies of water with oxidants stored separately in the device. We demonstrate that over 200 L of contaminated water can be treated with a floating device containing only 40 mL of oxidant (10 mM peroxysulphate). The modular device can be used in tandem structures on demand, maximizing water remediation per unit area. Our result provides a promising, eco-friendly method for in-situ water treatment that is unattainable with existing techniques.

Precise coordination of high-loading Fe single atoms with sulfur boosts selective generation of nonradicals

Nonradicals are effective in selectively degrading electron-rich organic contaminants, which unfortunately suffer from unsatisfactory yield and uncontrollable composition due to the competitive generation of radicals. Herein, we precisely construct a local microenvironment of the carbon nitride-supported high-loading (~9 wt.%) Fe single-atom catalyst (Fe SAC) with sulfur via a facile supermolecular self-assembly strategy. Short-distance S coordination boosts the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and selectively generates high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV=O) along with singlet oxygen (1O2), significantly increasing the 1O2 yield, PMS utilization, and p-chlorophenol reactivity by 6.0, 3.0, and 8.4 times, respectively. The composition of nonradicals is controllable by simply changing the S content. In contrast, long-distance S coordination generates both radicals and nonradicals, and could not promote reactivity. Experimental and theoretical analyses suggest that the short-distance S upshifts the d-band center of the Fe atom, i.e., being close to the Fermi level, which changes the binding mode between the Fe atom and O site of PMS to selectively generate 1O2 and FeIV=O with a high yield. The short-distance S-coordinated Fe SAC exhibits excellent application potential in various water matrices. These findings can guide the rational design of robust SACs toward a selective and controllable generation of nonradicals with high yield and PMS utilization.

Embedding electronic perpetual motion into single-atom catalysts for persistent Fenton-like reactions

In our quest to leverage the capabilities of the emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) for wastewater purification, we confronted fundamental challenges related to electron scarcity and instability. Through meticulous theoretical calculations, we identified optimal placements for nitrogen vacancies (Nv) and iron (Fe) single-atom sites, uncovering a dual-site approach that significantly amplified visible-light absorption and charge transfer dynamics. Informed by these computational insights, we cleverly integrated Nv into the catalyst design to boost electron density around iron atoms, yielding a potent and flexible photoactivator for benign peracetic acid. This exceptional catalyst exhibited remarkable stability and effectively degraded various organic contaminants over 20 cycles with self-cleaning properties. Specifically, the Nv sites captured electrons, enabling their swift transfer to adjacent Fe sites under visible light irradiation. This mechanism accelerated the reduction of the formed "peracetic acid-catalyst" intermediate. Theoretical calculations were used to elucidate the synergistic interplay of dual mechanisms, illuminating increased adsorption and activation of reactive molecules. Furthermore, electron reduction pathways on the conduction band were elaborately explored, unveiling the production of reactive species that enhanced photocatalytic processes. A six-flux model and associated parameters were also applied to precisely optimize the photocatalytic process, providing invaluable insights for future photocatalyst design. Overall, this study offers a molecule-level insight into the rational design of robust SACs in a photo-Fenton-like system, with promising implications for wastewater treatment and other high-value applications.

Fenton-like activity and pathway modulation via single-atom sites and pollutants comediates the electron transfer process

The studies on the origin of versatile oxidation pathways toward targeted pollutants in the single-atom catalysts (SACs)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems were always associated with the coordination structures rather than the perspective of pollutant characteristics, and the analysis of mechanism commonality is lacking. In this work, a variety of single-atom catalysts (M-SACs, M: Fe, Co, and Cu) were fabricated via a pyrolysis process using lignin as the complexation agent and substrate precursor. Sixteen kinds of commonly detected pollutants in various references were selected, and their lnkobs values in M-SACs/PMS systems correlated well (R2 = 0.832 to 0.883) with their electrophilic indexes (reflecting the electron accepting/donating ability of the pollutants) as well as the energy gap (R2 = 0.801 to 0.840) between the pollutants and M-SACs/PMS complexes. Both the electron transfer process (ETP) and radical pathways can be significantly enhanced in the M-SACs/PMS systems, while radical oxidation was overwhelmed by the ETP oxidation toward the pollutants with lower electrophilic indexes. In contrast, pollutants with higher electrophilic indexes represented the weaker electron-donating capacity to the M-SACs/PMS complexes, which resulted in the weaker ETP oxidation accompanied with noticeable radical oxidation. In addition, the ETP oxidation in different M-SACs/PMS systems can be regulated via the energy gaps between the M-SACs/PMS complexes and pollutants. As a result, the Fenton-like activities in the M-SACs/PMS systems could be well modulated by the reaction pathways, which were determined by both electrophilic indexes of pollutants and single-atom sites. This work provided a strategy to establish PMS-based AOP systems with tunable oxidation capacities and pathways for high-efficiency organic decontamination.

Interfacial Electron Transfer in Chemical and Biological Transformation of Pollutants in Environmental Catalysis

Interfacial electron transfer (IET) is essential for chemical and biological transformation of pollutants, operative across diverse lengths and time scales. This Perspective presents an array of multiscale molecular simulation methodologies, supplemented by in situ monitoring and imaging techniques, serving as robust tools to decode IET enhancement mechanisms such as interface molecular modification, catalyst coordination mode, and atomic composition regulation. In addition, three IET-based pollutant transformation systems, an electrocatalytic oxidation system, a bioelectrochemical spatial coupling system, and an enzyme-inspired electrocatalytic system, were developed, demonstrating a high effect in transforming and degrading pollutants. To improve the effectiveness and scalability of IET-based strategies, the refinement of these systems is necessitated through rigorous research and theoretical exploration, particularly in the context of practical wastewater treatment scenarios. Future endeavors aim to elucidate the synergy between biological and chemical modules, edit the environmental functional microorganisms, and harness machine learning for designing advanced environmental catalysts to boost efficiency. This Perspective highlights the powerful potential of IET-focused environmental remediation strategies, emphasizing the critical role of interdisciplinary research in addressing the urgent global challenge of water pollution.

Active Center Size-Dependent Fenton-Like Chemistry for Sustainable Water Decontamination

Accurately controlling catalytic activity and mechanism as well as identifying structure-activity-selectivity correlations in Fenton-like chemistry is essential for designing high-performance catalysts for sustainable water decontamination. Herein, active center size-dependent catalysts with single cobalt atoms (CoSA), atomic clusters (CoAC), and nanoparticles (CoNP) were fabricated to realize the changeover of catalytic activity and mechanism in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like chemistry. Catalytic activity and durability vary with the change in metal active center sizes. Besides, reducing the metal size from nanoparticles to single atoms significantly modulates contributions of radical and nonradical mechanisms, thus achieving selective/nonselective degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal evolutions in catalytic mechanisms of size-dependent catalytic systems over different Gibbs free energies for reactive oxygen species generation. Single-atom site contact with PMS is preferred to induce nonradical mechanisms, while PMS dissociates and generates radicals on clusters and nanoparticles. Differences originating from reaction mechanisms endow developed systems with size-dependent selectivity and mineralization for treating actual hospital wastewater in column reactors. This work brings an in-depth understanding of metal size effects in Fenton-like chemistry and guides the design of intelligent catalysts to fulfill the demand of specific scenes for water purification.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Behaviors of Persulfate-Based Electron-Transfer Regime in Carbocatalysis

A carbon-based advanced oxidation process is featured for the nonradical electron-transfer pathway (ETP) from electron-donating organic compounds to activated persulfate complexes, enabling it as a green technology for the selective oxidation of organic pollutants in complex water environments. However, the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of the nonradical electron-transfer regime had been ambiguous due to a neglect of the influence of pH on the mechanisms. In this study, three kinds of organic pollutants were divided in the carbon-based ETP regime: (i) physio-adsorption, (ii) adsorption-dominated ETP (oxidation rate slightly surpasses adsorption rate), and (iii) oxidation-dominated ETP (oxidation rate outpaces the adsorption rate). The differential kinetic behaviors were attributed to the physicochemical properties of the organic pollutants. For example, the hydrophobicity, molecular radius, and positive electrostatic potential controlled the mass-transfer process of the adsorption stage of the reactants (peroxydisulfate (PDS) and organics). Meanwhile, other descriptors, including the Fukui index, oxidation potential, and electron cloud density regulated the electron-transfer processes and thus the kinetics of oxidation. Most importantly, the oxidation pathways of these organic pollutants could be altered by adjusting the water chemistry. This study reveals the principles for developing efficient nonradical systems to selectively remove and recycle organic pollutants in wastewater.

Carbocatalysts for Enhancing Permanganate Oxidation of Sulfisoxazole

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is extensively applied in water purification due to its stability and ease of handling, but it is a mild oxidant for trace organic contaminants (TrOCs). Hence, there is significant interest in strategies for enhancing reaction kinetics, especially in combination with efficient and economical carbocatalysts. This study compared the performance of four carbocatalysts (graphite, graphene oxide (GO), reduced-GO (rGO), and nitrogen-doped rGO (N-rGO)) in accelerating sulfisoxazole (SSX) oxidation by Mn(VII) and found that GO exhibited the greatest catalytic performance. Besides, the Mn(VII)/GO system shows desirable capacities to remove a broad spectrum of TrOCs. We proposed that the degradation of SSX in Mn(VII)-GO suspensions follows two routes: (i) direct oxidation of SSX by Mn species [both Mn(VII) and in situ formed MnO2(s)] and (ii) a carbocatalyst route, where GO acts as an electron mediator, accepting electrons from SSX and transferring them to Mn(VII). We developed a mathematical model to show the contribution of each parallel pathway and found one-electron transfer is primarily responsible for accelerating SSX removal in the Mn(VII)/GO system. Findings in this study showed that GO provides a simple and effective strategy for enhancing the reactivity of Mn(VII) and provided mechanistic insights into the GO-catalyzed redox reaction between SSX and Mn(VII).

Salinity-mediated water self-purification via bond network distorting of H2O molecules on DRC-surface

High salinity has plagued wastewater treatment for a long time by hindering pollutant removal, thereby becoming a global challenge for water pollution control that is difficult to overcome even with massive energy consumption. Herein, we propose a novel process for rapid salinity-mediated water self-purification in a dual-reaction-centers (DRC) system with cation-π structures. In this process, local hydrogen bond networks of H2O molecules can be distorted through the mediation of salinity, thereby opening the channels for the preferential contact of pollutants on the DRC interface. As the result, the elimination rate of pollutants increased approximately 32-fold at high salinity (100 mM) without any external energy consumption. Our findings provide a novel technology for high-efficiency and low-consumption water self-purification, which is of great significance in environmental remediation and even fine chemical industry.

Sequential anodic oxidation and cathodic electro-Fenton in the Janus electrified membrane for reagent-free degradation of pollutants

Electrified membrane technologies have recently demonstrated high potential in tackling water pollution, yet their practical applications are challenged by relying on large precursor doses. Here, we developed a Janus porous membrane (JPEM) with synergic direct oxidation by Magnéli phase Ti4O7 anode and electro-Fenton reactions by CuFe2O4 cathode. Organic pollutants were first directly oxidized on the Ti4O7 anode, where the extracted electrons from pollutants were transported to the cathode for electro-Fenton production of hydroxyl radical (·OH). The cathodic ·OH further enhanced the mineralization of organic pollutant degradation intermediates. With the sequential anodic and cathodic oxidation processes, the reagent-free JPEM showed competitive performance in rapid degradation (removal rate of 0.417 mg L-1 s-1) and mineralization (68.7 % decrease in TOC) of sulfamethoxazole. The JPEM system displayed general performance to remove phenol, carbamazepine, and perfluorooctanoic acid. The JPEM runs solely on electricity and oxygen that is comparable to that of PEM relies on large precursor doses and, therefore, operation friendly and environmental sustainability. The high pollutant removal and mineralization achieved by rational design of the reaction processes sheds light on a new approach for constructing an efficient electrified membrane.

Enhanced Oxidation of Organic Compounds by the Ferrihydrite-Ferrate System: The Role of Intramolecular Electron Transfer and Intermediate Iron Species

Previous studies mostly held that the oxidation capacity of ferrate depends on the involvement of intermediate iron species (i.e., FeIV/FeV), however, the potential role of the metastable complex was disregarded in ferrate-based heterogeneous catalytic oxidation processes. Herein, we reported a complexation-mediated electron transfer mechanism in the ferrihydrite-ferrate system toward sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A synergy between intermediate FeIV/FeV oxidation and the intramolecular electron transfer step was proposed. Specifically, the conversion of phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2) suggested that FeIV/FeV was involved in the oxidation of SMX. Moreover, based on the in situ Raman test and chronopotentiometry analysis, the formation of the metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate was found, which possesses higher oxidation potential than free ferrate and could achieve the preliminary oxidation of organics via the electron transfer step. In addition, the amino group of SMX could complex with ferrate, and the resulting metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate would combine further with SMX molecules, leading to intramolecular electron transfer and SMX degradation. The ferrate loss experiments suggested that ferrihydrite could accelerate the decomposition of ferrate. Finally, the effects of pH value, anions, humic acid, and actual water on the degradation of SMX by ferrihydrite-ferrate were also revealed. Overall, ferrihydrite demonstrated high catalytic capacity, good reusability, and nontoxic performance for ferrate activation. The ferrihydrite-ferrate process may be a green and promising method for organic removal in wastewater treatment.
