Braiding, branching and chiral amplification of nanofibres in supramolecular gels

Hydrogen-Bonded Fibrous Nanotubes Assembled from Trigonal Prismatic Building Blocks

In reticular chemistry, molecular building blocks are designed to create crystalline open frameworks. A key principle of reticular chemistry is that the most symmetrical networks are the likely outcomes of reactions, particularly when highly symmetrical building blocks are involved. The strategy of synthesizing low-dimensional networks aims to reduce explicitly the symmetry of the molecular building blocks. Here we report the spontaneous formation of hydrogen-bonded fibrous structures from trigonal prismatic building blocks, which were designed to form three-dimensional crystalline networks on account of their highly symmetrical structures. Utilizing different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, we identify the structures at the early stages of the assembly process in order to and understand the growth mechanism. The symmetrical molecular building blocks are incorporated preferentially in the longitudinal direction, giving rise to anisotropic hydrogen-bonded porous organic nanotubes. Entropy-driven anisotropic growth provides micrometer-scale unidirectional nanotubes with high porosity. By combining experimental evidence and theoretical modeling, we have obtained a deep understanding of the nucleation and growth processes. Our findings offer fundamental insight into the molecular design of tubular structures. The nanotubes evolve further in the transverse directions to provide extended higher-order fibrous structures [nano- and microfibers], ultimately leading to large-scale interconnected hydrogen-bonded fiber-like structures with twists and turns. Our work provides fundamental understanding and paves the way for innovative molecular designs in low-dimensional networks.

Chirality Transfer of Glycopeptide across Scales Defined by the Continuity of Hydrogen Bonds

In nature, chirality transfer refines biomolecules across all size scales, bestowing them with a myriad of sophisticated functions. Despite recent advances in replicating chirality transfer with biotic or abiotic building blocks, a molecular understanding of the underlying mechanism of chirality transfer remains a daunting challenge. In this paper, the coassembly of two types of glycopeptide molecules differing in capability of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds enabled the involvement of discontinuous hydrogen bond, which allowed for a nanoscale chirality transfer from glycopeptide molecules to chiral micelles, yet inhibited the micrometer scale chirality transfer toward helix formation, leading to an achiral transfer from chiral micelles to planar monolayer. Upon stacking the monolayer into a bilayer, the nonsuperimposable front and back faces of the chiral micelles involved in the monolayer ribbons lead to the opposite rotation of two layers toward increasing the continuity of H-bonds. The resultant continuity triggered the symmetry breaking of stacked bilayers and thus reactivated the micrometer-scale chirality transfer toward the final helix. This work delineates a promising step toward a better understanding and replicating the naturally occurring chirality transfer events and will be instructive to future chiral material design.

Divergent self-assembly propensity of enantiomeric phenylalanine amphiphiles that undergo pH-induced nanofiber-to-nanoglobule conversion

This study presents the pathway diversity in the self-assembly of enantiomeric single phenylalanine derived amphiphiles (single F-PDAs), viz.L-NapF-EDA and D-NapF-EDA, that form supramolecular hydrogels at varied concentrations (≥1 mg mL-1 and ≥3 mg mL-1, respectively). By fitting the variable temperature circular dichroism (VT-CD) data to the isodesmic model, various thermodynamic parameters associated with their self-assembly, such as association constant (K), changes in enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG), were extracted. The self-assembly of these single F-PDAs was found to be enthalpy-driven but entropically-disfavored. Although self-assembly of the D-isomer was slow, it also exhibited greater free energy of association than the L-isomer. Consequently, thermally and mechanically more robust self-assemblies were formed by the D-isomer than the L-isomer. We term these results as the "butterfly effect in self-assembly" wherein the difference in the stereochemical orientation of the residues at a single chiral center present in these molecules resulted in strong differences in the self-assembly propensity as well as in their thermal and mechanical stability. These single F-PDAs form helical nanofibers of opposite chirality upon self-assembly at basic pH (≥8) that produce intense CD signals. However, upon decreasing the pH, a gradual nanofiber-to-nanoglobular transformation was noticed due to protonation-induced structural changes in the PDAs.

Changing Liquid Crystal Helical Pitch with a Reversible Rotaxane Switch

The transmission of chiral information between the molecular, meso and microscopic scales is a facet of biology that remains challenging to understand mechanistically and to mimic with artificial systems. Here we demonstrate that the dynamic change in the expression of the chirality of a rotaxane can be transduced into a change in pitch of a soft matter system. Shuttling the position of the macrocycle from far-away-from to close-to a point-chiral center on the rotaxane axle changes the expression of the chiral information that is transmitted across length scales; from nanometer scale constitutional chirality that affects the conformation of the macrocycle, to the centimeter scale chirality of the liquid crystal phase, significantly changing the pitch length of the chiral nematic structure.

Ultralight aerogels via supramolecular polymerization of a new chiral perfluoropyridine-based sulfonimidamide organogelator

Chiral and enantiopure perfluorinated sulfonimidamides act as low-molecular weight gelators at low critical gelation concentration (<1 mg mL-1) via supramolecular polymerization in nonpolar organic solvents and more heterogenic mixtures, such as biodiesel and oil. Freeze-drying of the organogel leads to ultralight aerogel with extremely low density (1 mg mL-1). The gelation is driven by hydrogen bonding resulting in a helical molecular ordering and unique fibre assemblies as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, CD spectroscopy, and computational modeling of the supramolecular structure.

Heat-Set Supramolecular Hydrogelation by Regulating the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance for a Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescent Switch

Heat-set supramolecular gels exhibited totally opposite phase behaviors of dissolution upon cooling and gelation on heating. They are commonly discovered by chance and their rational design remains a great challenge. Herein, a rational design strategy is proposed to realize heat-set supramolecular hydrogelation through regulation of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of the system. A newly synthesized amphiphile hydrogelator with pyrene embedded in its lipophilic terminal can self-assemble into a hydrogel through a heating and cooling cycle. However, the host-guest complex of the gelator and hydrophilic γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CyD) results in a sol at room temperature. Thus, heat-set hydrogelation is realized from the sol state in a controllable manner. Heat-set gelation mechanism is revealed by exploring critical heat-set supramolecular gelation and the related findings provide a general strategy for developing new functional molecular gels with tunable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Scrolling in Supramolecular Gels: A Designer's Guide

Gelation by small molecules is a topic of enormous importance in catalysis, nanomaterials, drug delivery, and pharmaceutical crystallization. The mechanism by which gelators self-organize into a fibrous gel network is poorly understood. Herein, we describe the crystal structures and gelation properties of a library of bis(urea) compounds and show, via molecular dynamics simulations, how gelator aggregation progresses from a continuous pattern of supramolecular motifs to a homogeneous fiber network. Our model suggests that lamellae with asymmetric surfaces scroll into uniform unbranched fibrils, while sheets with symmetric surfaces undergo stacking to form crystals. The self-assembly of asymmetric lamellae is associated with specific molecular features, such as the presence of narrow and flexible end groups with high packing densities, and likely represents a general mechanism for the formation of small-molecule gels.

Biomimetic chiral hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic frameworks

Assembly ubiquitously occurs in nature and gives birth to numerous functional biomaterials and sophisticated organisms. In this work, chiral hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic frameworks (HOIFs) are synthesized via biomimicking the self-assembly process from amino acids to proteins. Enjoying the homohelical configurations analogous to α-helix, the HOIFs exhibit remarkable chiroptical activity including the chiral fluorescence (glum = 1.7 × 10-3) that is untouched among the previously reported hydrogen-bonded frameworks. Benefitting from the dynamic feature of hydrogen bonding, HOIFs enable enantio-discrimination of chiral aliphatic substrates with imperceivable steric discrepancy based on fluorescent change. Moreover, the disassembled HOIFs after recognition applications are capable of being facilely regenerated and self-purified via aprotic solvent-induced reassembly, leading to at least three consecutive cycles without losing the enantioselectivity. The underlying mechanism of chirality bias is decoded by the experimental isothermal titration calorimetry together with theoretic simulation.

Supramolecular gels - a panorama of low-molecular-weight gelators from ancient origins to next-generation technologies

Supramolecular gels, self-assembled from low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs), have a long history and a bright future. This review provides an overview of these materials, from their use in lubrication and personal care in the ancient world, through to next-generation technologies. In academic terms, colloid scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries first understood such gels as being physically assembled as a result of weak interactions, combining a solid-like network having a degree of crystalline order with a highly mobile liquid-like phase. During the 20th century, industrial scientists began using these materials in new applications in the polymer, oil and food industries. The advent of supramolecular chemistry in the late 20th century, with its focus on non-covalent interactions and controlled self-assembly, saw the horizons for these materials shifted significantly beyond their historic rheological applications, expanding their potential. The ability to tune the LMWG chemical structure, manipulate hierarchical assembly, develop multi-component systems, and introduce new types of responsive and interactive behaviour, has been transformative. Furthermore, the dynamics of these materials are increasingly understood, creating metastable gels and transiently-fueled systems. New approaches to shaping and patterning gels are providing a unique opportunity for more sophisticated uses. These supramolecular advances are increasingly underpinning and informing next-generation applications - from drug delivery and regenerative medicine to environmental remediation and sustainable energy. In summary, this article presents a panorama over the field of supramolecular gels, emphasising how both academic and industrial scientists are building on the past, and engaging new fundamental insights and innovative concepts to open up exciting horizons for their future use.

Synergistically Boosting the Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Functionalized Pillar[5]arenes by Polymerization and Aggregation

Supramolecular polymers based on chiral macrocycles have attracted increasing attention in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) owing to their unique properties. However, the construction of macrocyclic supramolecular polymers with highly efficient CPL properties in aggregate states still remains challenging. Herein, w e constructed a class of macrocycle-based coordination polymers by combining the planar chiral properties of pillar[5]arene with the excellent fluorescence properties of aggregation-induced emission luminogens. The formation of polymers enhances both the fluorescence and chiral properties, resulting in chiral supramolecular polymers with remarkable CPL properties. Increasing the aggregation degree of the polymers can further improve their CPL properties, as evidenced by a 21-fold increase in the dissymmetry factor and an over 25-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield in the aggregate state compared to the solution state. Such a synergistic effect of polymerization- and aggregation-enhanced CPL can be explained by the restriction of intramolecular motions and aggregation-induced conformation confinement. This work provides a promising method for developing highly efficient CPL supramolecular polymers.

Chiroptical Synaptic Heterojunction Phototransistors Based on Self-Assembled Nanohelix of π-Conjugated Molecules for Direct Noise-Reduced Detection of Circularly Polarized Light

High-performance chiroptical synaptic phototransistors are successfully demonstrated using heterojunctions composed of a self-assembled nanohelix of a π-conjugated molecule and a metal oxide semiconductor. To impart strong chiroptical activity to the device, a diketopyrrolopyrrole-based π-conjugated molecule decorated with chiral glutamic acid is newly synthesized; this molecule is capable of supramolecular self-assembly through noncovalent intermolecular interactions. In particular, nanohelix formed by intertwinded fibers with strong and stable chiroptical activity in a solid-film state are obtained through hydrogen-bonding-driven, gelation-assisted self-assembly. Phototransistors based on interfacial charge transfer at the heterojunction from the chiroptical nanohelix to the metal oxide semiconductor show excellent chiroptical detection with a high photocurrent dissymmetry factor of 1.97 and a high photoresponsivity of 218 A W-1 . The chiroptical phototransistor demonstrates photonic synapse-like, time-dependent photocurrent generation, along with persistent photoconductivity, which is attributed to the interfacial charge trapping. Through the advantage of synaptic functionality, a trained convolutional neural network successfully recognizes noise-reduced circularly polarized images of handwritten alphabetic characters with better than 89.7% accuracy.

Chiral Supramolecular Assemblies: Controllable Construction and Biological Activity

Chiral supramolecular assemblies with helical structures (e. g., proteins with α-helix, DNA with double helix, collagen with triple-helix) as the central structure motifs in biological systems play a crucial role in various physiological activities of living organisms. Variations in chiral structure can cause many abnormal physiological activities. To gain insight into the construction, structural transition, and related physiological functions of these complex helix in natural systems, it is necessary to fabricate artificial supramolecular assemblies with controllable helix orientation as research platform. This review discusses recent advances in chiral supramolecular assembly, including the precise construction and regulation of assembled chiral nanostructures with tunable chirality. Chiral structure-dependent biological activities, including cell proliferation, cell differentiation, antibacterial activity and tissue regeneration, are also discussed. This review not only contributes to further understanding of the importance of chirality in the physiological environment, but also plays an important role in the development of chiral biomedical materials for the treatment of diseases (e. g., tissue engineering regeneration, stem cell transplantation therapy).

Probing Molecular Chirality on the Self-Assembly and Gelation of Naphthalimide-Conjugated Dipeptides

In this work, 1,8-naphthalimide (NMI)-conjugated three hybrid dipeptides constituted of a β-amino acid and an α-amino acid have been designed, synthesized, and purified. Here, in the design, the chirality of the α-amino acid was varied to study the effect of molecular chirality on the supramolecular assembly. Self-assembly and gelation of three NMI conjugates were studied in mixed solvent systems [water and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO)]. Interestingly, chiral NMI derivatives [NMI-βAla-^lVal-OMe (NLV) and NMI-βAla-^dVal-OMe (NDV)] formed self-supported gels, while the achiral NMI derivative [NMI-βAla-Aib-OMe, (NAA)] failed to form any kind of gel at 1 mM concentration and in a mixed solvent (70% water in DMSO medium). Self-assembly processes were thoroughly investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), fluorescence, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. A J-type molecular assembly was observed in the mixed solvent system. The CD study indicated the formation of chiral assembled structures for NLV and NDV, which were mirror images of one another, and the self-assembled state by NAA was CD-silent. The nanoscale morphology of the three derivatives was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the case of NLV and NDV, left- and right-handed fibrilar morphologies were observed, respectively. In contrast, a flake-like morphology was noticed for NAA. The DFT study indicated that the chirality of the α-amino acid influenced the orientation of π-π stacking interactions of naphthalimide units in the self-assembled structure that in turn regulated the helicity. This is a unique work where molecular chirality controls the nanoscale assembly as well as the macroscopic self-assembled state.

Supramolecular glasses with color-tunable circularly polarized afterglow through evaporation-induced self-assembly of chiral metal-organic complexes

The fabrication of chiral molecules into macroscopic systems has many valuable applications, especially in the fields of optical displays, data encryption, information storage, and so on. Here, we design and prepare a serious of supramolecular glasses (SGs) based on Zn-L-Histidine complexes, via an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. Metal-ligand interactions between the zinc(II) ion and chiral L-Histidine endow the SGs with interesting circularly polarized afterglow (CPA). Multicolored CPA emissions from blue to red with dissymmetry factor as high as 9.5 × 10^-3 and excited-state lifetime up to 356.7 ms are achieved under ambient conditions. Therefore, this work not only communicates the bulk SGs with wide-tunable afterglow and large circular polarization, but also provides an EISA method for the macroscopic self-assembly of chiral metal-organic hybrids toward photonic applications.

Real-time Observation of Macroscopic Helical Morphologies under Optical Microscope: A Curious Case of π-π Stacking Driven Molecular Self-assembly of an Organic Gelator Devoid of Hydrogen Bonding

Supramolecular assemblies such as tubules/helix/double helix/helical tape etc. are usually submicron objects preventing direct observation under optical microscope. Chiral-pure form of these assemblies is important for potential applications. Herein, we report a rare phenomenon wherein a DMSO gel of a simple terpyridine derivative [(4-CNPhe)4PyTerp] produced macroscopic helical morphologies (μm length scale) which could be observed under optical microscope, formation of which could be monitored by optical videography, stable enough to withstand acidic vapour, robust enough to display reversible gel↔sol in response to acidic and ammonia vapour and sturdy enough to be maneuvered with a needle. These properties appeared to be unique to the title compound as the other related derivatives failed to display such assembly structures. SXRD and MD simulation studies suggested that weak interactions (π-π stacking) played a crucial role in the self-assembly process.

Spontaneous Twisting of Achiral Hard Rod Nematics

Since Onsager's seminal work, hard rods have been taken as a prototype of nematic liquid crystals, characterized by uniaxial order and a uniform director field as a ground state. Here, using Onsager theory to calculate the free energy in the presence of arbitrary deformations, we find that hard rod nematics have an intrinsic tendency to twist around their ordering axis (double twist), driven by a mechanism in which the orientational fluctuations of particles play a key role. The anisotropic hard core potential used here is arguably the simplest form of interaction able to originate spontaneous breaking of mirror symmetry in a 3D fluid. Our results are discussed in relation to the recent discovery of a double twisted ground state in cylindrically confined lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals.

Tuning of the Supramolecular Helicity of Peptide-Based Gel Nanofibers

Helical supramolecular architectures play important structural and functional roles in biological systems. The helicity of synthetic molecules can be tuned mainly by the chiral manipulation of the system. However, tuning of helicity by the achiral unit of the molecules is less studied. In this work, the helicity of naphthalimide-capped peptide-based gel nanofibers is tuned by the alteration of methylene units present in the achiral amino acid. The inversion of supramolecular helicity has been extensively studied by CD spectroscopy and morphological analysis. The density functional theory (DFT) study indicates that methylene spacers influence the orientation of π-π stacking interactions of naphthalimide units in the self-assembled structure that regulates the helicity. This work illustrates a new approach to tuning the supramolecular chirality of self-assembled biomaterials.

Hierarchically self-assembled homochiral helical microtoroids

Fabricating microscale helical structures from small molecules remains challenging due to the disfavoured torsion energy of twisted architectures and elusory chirality control at different hierarchical levels of assemblies. Here we report a combined solution-interface-directed assembly strategy for the formation of hierarchically self-assembled helical microtoroids with micrometre-scale lengths. A drop-evaporation assembly protocol on a solid substrate from pre-assembled intermediate colloids of enantiomeric binaphthalene bisurea compounds leads to microtoroids with preferred helicity, which depends on the molecular chirality of the starting enantiomers. Collective variable-temperature spectroscopic analyses, electron microscopy characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal a mechanism that simultaneously induces aggregation and cyclization to impart a favourable handedness to the final microtoroidal structures. We then use monodispersed luminescent helical toroids as chiral light-harvesting antenna and show excellent Förster resonance energy transfer ability to a co-hosted chiral acceptor dye, leading to unique circularly polarized luminescence. Our results shed light on the potential of the combined solution-interface-directed self-assembly approach in directing hierarchical chirality control and may advance the prospect of chiral superstructures at a higher length scale.

Full-Color and Switchable Circularly Polarized Light from a Macroscopic Chiral Dendritic Film through a Solid-State Supramolecular Assembly

Chiral materials displaying chirality across multiple length scales have attracted increasing interest due to their potential applications in diverse fields. Herein, we report an efficient approach for the construction of macroscopic crystal dendrites with hierarchical chirality based on an in situ solid assembly in a block copolymer film. Chiral fluorescent crystals are formed by enantiopure d-/l-dibenzoyl tartaric acid and pyrenecarboxylic acid in a poly(1,4-butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) film. The chiro-optical activity of the crystalline dendrites can be greatly amplified in the absorption and scattering regions and goes along with the dimension of dendrites. Notably, the chiral dendrites exhibited strong circularly polarized luminescence emission with a high dissymmetric factor (0.03). The enhancement of the quantum yield of the chiral film was up to 28%, which was 14 times higher that of the corresponding fluorescent molecules. The circularly polarized emission bands of the films can be fine-tuned by contriving the emissive bands of fluorescent molecules. More importantly, the chiral signals are able to be wiped when the fluorescent group photodimerizes under UV irradiation. This work provides an efficient way to develop functional materials through solid self-assembly.

Hydrogen-bond organized 2D metal-organic microsheets: direct ultralong phosphorescence and color-tunable optical waveguides

Ultralong phosphorescent materials have numerous applications across biological imaging, light-emitting devices, X-ray detection and anti-counterfeiting. Triplet-state molecular phosphorescence typically accompanies the singlet-state fluorescence during photoluminescence, and it is still difficult to achieve direct triplet photoemission as ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Here, we have designed Zn-IMDC (IMDC, 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid) and Cd-IMDC, two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bond organized metal-organic crystalline microsheets that exhibit rarely direct ultralong RTP upon UV excitation, benefiting from the appropriate heavy-atom effect and multiple triplet energy levels. The excitation-dependent and thermally stimulated ultralong phosphorescence endow the metal-organic systems great opportunities for information safety application and temperature-gated afterglow emission. The well-defined 2D microsheets present color-tunable and anisotropic optical waveguides under different excitation and temperature conditions, providing an effective way to obtain intelligent RTP-based photonic systems at the micro- and nano-scales.

Anion-responsive self-assembled hydrogels of a phenylalanine-TREN conjugate allow sequential release of propranolol and doxorubicin

Stimuli-responsive self-assembled and supramolecular hydrogels derived from peptide amphiphiles have opened exciting new avenues in biomedicine and drug delivery. Herein, we screened a series of phenylalanine-amphiphiles possessing polyamine and oxyethylene appendages for their self-assembly and anion-responsiveness and found that the tris(aminoethyl)amine (TREN) containing amphiphile NapF-TREN formed injectable hydrogels that could be disrupted upon the addition of stoichiometric amounts of tetrahedral monovalent anions such as H₂PO₄^- and HSO₄^-, while the addition of other anions such as Cl^-, HPO₄^2-, CO₃^2-, HCO₃^- or SO₄^2- did not affect the gel stability. The anion-gelator interaction was investigated by ¹H and ³¹P NMR spectroscopy as well as by Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC). These studies confirmed a 1 : 1 stoichiometry and revealed negative enthalpy and negative entropy for the binding of H₂PO₄^- with NapF-TREN. Microscopic investigations by TEM, AFM, and SAXS revealed that H₂PO₄^- anions induced a nanofiber-to-nanoglobule morphological change in the aqueous self-assemblies of NapF-TREN. However, upon ageing the samples, slow reformation of the nanofibers was also observed, reflecting the reversibility of the anion-gelator interaction. The anion- and pH-responsive nature of the NapF-TREN hydrogels was exploited to program sequential release of entrapped drugs propranolol and doxorubicin.

A versatile way for the synthesis of monomethylamines by reduction of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles with the NaBH4/I2 system

An economical and versatile protocol for the one-pot synthesis of monomethylamines by reduction of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles with NaBH₄/I₂ in THF at reflux temperature is described. This method used no special catalyst and various monomethylamines can be easily obtained in moderate to good yields from a wide range of raw materials including amines (primary amines and secondary amines), carboxylic acids and isocyanates. Besides, an interesting reduction selectivity was observed. Exploration of the reaction process shows that it undergoes a two-step pathway via a formamide intermediate and the reduction of the formamide intermediate to monomethylamine as the rate-determining step. This work can contribute significantly expanding the applications of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles.

In Situ Probe Supramolecular Self-Assembly Dynamics and Chirality Transfer Mechanism at Air-Water Interface

The study of supramolecular self-assembly dynamics and the chirality transfer mechanism is of importance to the rational design of potentially functional chiral supramolecular materials and an understanding of the origin of homochirality in biological systems. Herein, we study the supramolecular assemblies constructed by the tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) molecules' adsorption on the enantiomer chiral amphiphilic molecules (l-/d-G12) using sum-frequency generation (SFG) and second harmonic generation (SHG) spectra. We first establish a dynamic model that involved adsorption and assembly and obtained the dynamic parameters by fitting this model. We then propose the chiral transfer mechanism from the chiral center of the l-/d-G12 molecule to the whole supramolecular assembly. Finally, we put forward an explanation that the sulfonic acid group and the phenyl group on the TPPS molecule show homochirality, but the porphyrin ring forms J-aggregation and shows mirror-symmetric structural chirality in the l-/d-G12 and TPPS self-assembly at these processes.

Dynamic Control of a Multistate Chiral Supramolecular Polymer in Water

Natural systems transfer chiral information across multiple length scales through dynamic supramolecular interaction to accomplish various functions. Inspired by nature, many exquisite artificial supramolecular systems have been developed, in which controlling the supramolecular chirality holds the key to completing specific tasks. However, to achieve precise and non-invasive control and modulation of chirality in these systems remains challenging. As a non-invasive stimulus, light can be used to remotely control the chirality with high spatiotemporal precision. In contrast to common molecular switches, a synthetic molecular motor can act as a multistate chiroptical switch with unidirectional rotation, offering major potential to regulate more complex functions. Here, we present a light-driven molecular motor-based supramolecular polymer, in which the intrinsic chirality is transferred to the nanofibers, and the rotation of molecular motors governs the chirality and morphology of the supramolecular polymer. The resulting supramolecular polymer also exhibits light-controlled multistate aggregation-induced emission. These findings present a photochemically tunable multistate dynamic supramolecular system in water and pave the way for developing molecular motor-driven chiroptical materials.

Double helical π-aggregate nanoarchitectonics for amplified circularly polarized luminescence

The canonical double helical π-stacked array of base pairs within DNA interior has inspired the interest in supramolecular double helical architectures with advanced electronic, magnetic and optical functions. Here, we report a selective-recognized and chirality-matched co-assembly strategy for the fabrication of fluorescent π-amino acids into double helical π-aggregates, which show exceptional strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The single crystal structure of the optimal combination of co-assemblies shows that the double-stranded helical organization of these π-amino acids is cooperatively assisted by both CH-π and hydrogen-bond arrays with chirality match. The well-defined spatial arrangement of the π-chromophores could effectively suppress the non-radiative decay pathways and facilitate chiral exciton couplings, leading to superior CPL with a strong figure of merit (glum = 0.14 and QY = 0.76). Our findings might open a new door for developing DNA-inspired chiroptical materials with prominent properties by enantioselective co-assembly initiated double helical π-aggregation.

Carbodiimide-Driven Dimerization and Self-Assembly of Artificial, Ribose-Based Amphiphiles

The aqueous self-assembly of amphiphiles into aggregates such as micelles and vesicles has been widely investigated over the past decades with applications ranging from materials science to drug delivery. The combination of characteristic properties of nucleic acids and amphiphiles is of substantial interest to mimic biological self-organization and compartmentalization. Herein, we present ribose- and ribonucleotide-based amphiphiles and investigate their self-assembly as well as their fundamental reactivity. We found that various types of aggregates are formed, ranging in size from nanometers to micrometers and all amphiphiles exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in solution as well as in the solid state. We also observed that the addition of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) leads to rapid and selective dimerization of the amphiphiles into pyrophosphates, which decreases the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) by a factor of 25 when compared to the monomers. Since the propensity for amphiphile dimerization is correlated with their tendency to self-assemble, our results may be relevant for the formation of rudimentary compartments under prebiotic conditions.

Plasmonic Nanosensors with Extraordinary Sensitivity to Molecularly Enantioselective Recognition at Nanoscale Interfaces

Molecular chirality recognition plays a pivotal role in chiral generation and transfer in living systems and makes important contribution to the development of diverse applications spanning from chiral separation to soft nanorobots. To detect chirality recognition, most of the molecular sensors described to date are based on the design and preparation of the host-guest complexation with chromophore or fluorophore at the reporter unit. Nevertheless, the involved tedious procedures and complicated chemical syntheses hamper their practical applications. Here, we report the plasmonically chiroptical detection of molecular chirality recognition without the need for a chromophore or fluorophore unit. This facile methodology is based on plasmonic nanotransducers that can convert molecular chirality recognitions occurring at nanoscale interfaces into asymmetrically amplified plasmonic circular dichroism readouts, enabling enantiospecific recognition and quantitative determination of the enantiomeric excess of small amino acids. Importantly, such a plasmon-based chirality sensing shows 10²-10³ amplification in the plasmonic circular dichroism signals from the detections of racemate and near-racemate of molecular analysts, demonstrating an extraordinary sensitivity to the host-guest enantioselective interactions. Furthermore, with advantages of easy-processing, cost-effective, and specific to interfacial molecular chirality, our chiroptical sensing scheme could hold considerable promise toward applications of enantioselective high-throughput screening in biology, stereochemistry, and pharmaceutics.

Programmable Transient Supramolecular Chiral G-quadruplex Hydrogels via a Chemically Fueled Non-Equilibrium Self-assembly Strategy

The temporal and spatial control of natural systems has aroused great interest in the creation of synthetic mimics. Operating with boronic ester-based dynamic covalent chemistry and coupling it with an internal pH feedback system, herein, we developed a new chemically fueled reaction network to design non-equilibrium supramolecular chiral G-quadruplex hydrogels with programmable lifetime from minutes, to hours, to days, as well as high transparency and conductivity, excellent injectability and rapid self-healability. The cycle system can be controlled via in-situ kinetically-controlled formation and dissociation of dynamic boronic ester bonds between cis-diols of guanosine (G) and 5-fluorobenzoxaborole (B) under chemical fuels (KOH and 1,3-propanesultone), leading to the formation of a precipitate-solution-gel-precipitate cycle under non-equilibrium conditions. A combined experimental-computational approach revealed that the underlying mechanism of the non-equilibrium self-assembly involves aggregation and disaggregation of right-handed helical G-quadruplex superstructure. With consecutive cycles of fuel addition, the non-equilibrium system can be easily refueled at least 6 cycles without obvious loss in the rheological moduli of the transient hydrogels. The proposed dynamic boronic ester-based non-equilibrium self-assembly strategy offers a new option to design next-generation adaptive and interactive smart materials.

Multiscale structures and rheology of bisurea-loaded resins for anti-sagging applications

Four representative bisurea molecules (HDI-BA, MDI-BA, TDI-BA, and IPDI-BA) were synthesized and dispersed simultaneously by reacting benzylamine (BA) with various types of diisocyanates in a polyester/ortho-xylene resin medium to produce bisurea-loaded resins (BLRs) for anti-sagging application with paints and coating materials. These bisurea molecules are symmetric and differ only in the central spacer unit, thereby presenting an ideal and simplest model system to delve into the structure-performance relationship. The multiscale structural features arising from self-assembly in each of the BLRs were scrutinized using the combination of multi-angular dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle light/X-ray scattering (SALS/SAXS), rheology, and scanning electron/optical microscopy (SEM/OM) characterization. All four BLRs were revealed to foster micron-sized, mostly sphere-like agglomerates, with distinct hierarchical structures that correlate well with their thixotropic and anti-sagging performances. Three BLRs (HDI-BA, MDI-BA, and TDI-BA) produce similar rod-like packing units (10 × 1 × 1 nm³), with only one exception (IPDI-BA) that produces a spherical packing unit (2 nm in diameter). However, the bulk feature of the agglomeration state, which dictates the thixotropic and anti-sagging properties, cannot be readily foreseen from the chemical structure or elementary packing unit of a bisurea. The present findings, while confirming the importance of optimum molecular design that controls the early-stage self-assembly behavior of a bisurea in resin media, highlight the necessity of resolving detailed (multiscale) structural features in order to establish the full structure-performance relationship imperatively needed for like material systems and applications.

Tuning DNA Supramolecular Polymers by the Addition of Small, Functionalized Nucleobase Mimics

Nucleobase mimicking small molecules able to reconfigure DNA are a recently discovered strategy that promises to extend the structural and functional diversity of nucleic acids. However, only simple, unfunctionalized molecules such as cyanuric acid and melamine have so far been used in this approach. In this work, we show that the addition of substituted cyanuric acid molecules can successfully program polyadenine strands to assemble into supramolecular fibers. Unlike conventional DNA nanostructure functionalization, which typically end-labels DNA strands, our approach incorporates functional groups into DNA with high density using small molecules and results in new DNA triple helices coated with alkylamine or alcohol units that grow into micrometer-long fibers. We find that small changes in the small molecule functional group can result in large structural and energetic variation in the overall assembly. A combination of circular dichroism, atomic force microscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and a new thermodynamic method, transient equilibrium mapping, elucidated the molecular factors behind these large changes. In particular, we identify substantial DNA sugar and phosphate group deformations to accommodate a hydrogen bond between the phosphate and the small-molecule functional groups, as well as a critical chain length of the functional group which switches this interaction from intra- to interfiber. These parameters allow the controlled formation of hierarchical, hybrid DNA assemblies simply through the addition and variation of small, functionalized molecules.

Fabrication of a chiral luminescent hydrogel from gold nanoclusters via molecular recognition

A novel supramolecular chiral hydrogel with enhanced emission was obtained by the co-assembly of achiral thiobarbituric acid-modified gold nanoclusters (TBA-AuNCs) with chiral histidine molecules. Chirality transfer from histidine to the supramolecular hydrogels was achieved through the π-π stacking and intermolecular H-bonding based on molecular recognition. This work gives a creative strategy for the building of chiral nanocluster-based materials.

Selective Construction of Trefoil knots and a Molecular Borromean Ring Induced by Steric Hindrance of Thioether Ligands

Two Cp*-Rh^III based trefoil knots were obtained in high yield under ambient conditions via the coordination-driven self-assembly of semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand 1,4-bis[(pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl]benzene (L₁ ), ligand chloranilic acid (H₂ -CA) and 6,11-dihydroxytetracene-5,12-dione (H₂ -TtDo) with Cp*Rh^III metal corner units, respectively. Furthermore, using the bulkier 4,4'-{[(2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]bis(sulfanediyl)}dipyridine (L₂ ) in the place of ligand L₁ in the construction process resulted in the formation of a teranuclear metallacycle and a template-free Borromean ring in high yields thanks to significantly altered intermolecular forces between the constituent ligands induced by the sterically-hindering methyl groups of L₂ , as demonstrated via a detailed X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy.

Computational Tools to Rationalize and Predict the Self-Assembly Behavior of Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels form a class of soft materials that has been heavily explored by the chemical community in the past 20 years. While a multitude of experimental techniques has demonstrated its usefulness when characterizing these materials, the potential value of computational techniques has received much less attention. This review aims to provide a complete overview of studies that employ computational tools to obtain a better fundamental understanding of the self-assembly behavior of supramolecular gels or to accelerate their development by means of prediction. As such, we hope to stimulate researchers to consider using computational tools when investigating these intriguing materials. In the concluding remarks, we address future challenges faced by the field and formulate our vision on how computational methods could help overcoming them.

Benzoate ester as a new species for supramolecular chiral assembly

In this work, a benzoate ester molecule, dodecamethylnonacosane-2,28-diyl dibenzoate (DMNDB), has been discovered as a new species that aggregates into chiral nano-assemblies. In the tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water system, the benzoate ester, DMNDB, could self-assemble into left-handed twisted nanowires, and the most suitable THF/water volume ratio to obtain uniform twisted nanowires was 3 : 7. The driving forces of assembly and the molecular packing type in assemblies for the twisted nanowires were explored, and a possible assembly mechanism was proposed to understand the generation of chiral assemblies. Interestingly, the left-handed nanowires could cross-link and immobilize the solvent in the isopropanol (iPrOH)/water (2 : 8) system to form chiral gels. When the iPrOH/water ratio was increased to 6 : 4, the left-handed nanowires as structural units were found to evolve to right-handed nanofibers. Accordingly, the intermolecular interactions and the molecular packing type also changed with the solvent ratio. What is more, the xerogel could be obtained by drying the gel and left-handed twisted nanowires could form in the THF/water system again, showing the recyclability of chiral nanoassemblies. Also, these DMNDB chiral nanostructures exhibited potential for application in enantioselective separation by co-assembling with tetra-aniline.

A Comprehensive Landscape for Fibril Association Behaviors Encoded Synergistically by Saccharides and Peptides

Nature provides us a panorama of fibrils with tremendous structural polymorphism from molecular building blocks to hierarchical association behaviors. Despite recent achievements in creating artificial systems with individual building blocks through self-assembly, molecularly encoding the relationship from model building blocks to fibril association, resulting in controlled macroscopic properties, has remained an elusive goal. In this paper, by employing a designed set of glycopeptide building blocks and combining experimental and computational tools, we report a library of controlled fibril polymorphism with elucidation from molecular packing to fibril association and the related macroscopic properties. The growth of the fibril either axially or radially with right- or left-handed twisting is determined by the subtle trade-off of oligosaccharide and oligopeptide components. Meanwhile, visible evidence for the association process of double-strand fibrils has been experimentally and theoretically proposed. Finally the fibril polymorphs demonstrated significant different macroscopic properties on hydrogel formation and cellular migration control.

From Photoinduced Supramolecular Polymerization to Responsive Organogels

Controlling supramolecular polymerization by external stimuli holds great potential toward the development of responsive soft materials and manipulating self-assembly at the nanoscale. Photochemical switching offers the prospect of regulating the structure and properties of systems in a noninvasive and reversible manner with spatial and temporal control. In addition, this approach will enhance our understanding of supramolecular polymerization mechanisms; however, the control of molecular assembly by light remains challenging. Here we present photoresponsive stiff-stilbene-based bis-urea monomers whose trans isomers readily form supramolecular polymers in a wide range of organic solvents, enabling fast light-triggered depolymerization-polymerization and reversible gel formation. Due to the stability of the cis isomers and the high photostationary states (PSS) of the cis-trans isomerization, precise control over supramolecular polymerization and in situ gelation could be achieved with short response times. A detailed study on the temperature-dependent and photoinduced supramolecular polymerization in organic solvents revealed a kinetically controlled nucleation-elongation mechanism. By application of a Volta phase plate to enhance the phase-contrast method in cryo-EM, unprecedented for nonaqueous solutions, uniform nanofibers were observed in organic solvents.

Triple-Modulated Chiral Inversion of Co-Assembly System Based on Alanine Amphiphile and Cyanostilbene Derivative

The construction of chiroptical materials with controllable chirality is of special importance in biology and chemistry. Although tunable chirality can be realized in various systems, it remains a fundamental challenge to realize multimodulated chiral inversion. Herein, we report that chiral alanine derivative and fluorescent cyanostilbene derivative co-assemble to prepare supramolecular chiral systems, where twist nanofibers with totally inverted supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence are obtained through stoichiometric modulation. The supramolecular handedness can be inverted by means of altering the cooling rate and incorporating metal ions. The mechanism study reveals that the synergistic effect among hydrogen bonds, coordination interactions, and π-π stacking interactions contributes to the chirality inversion. This work establishes an effective strategy to precisely modulate supramolecular chirality in multiple ways, which shows great potential in developing smart chiroptical materials capable of achieving complex functionalities.

Tuning of Morphology by Chirality in Self-Assembled Structures of Bis(Urea) Amphiphiles in Water

We present the synthesis and self‐assembly of a chiral bis(urea) amphiphile and show that chirality offers a remarkable level of control towards different morphologies. Upon self‐assembly in water, the molecular‐scale chiral information is translated to the mesoscopic level. Both enantiomers of the amphiphile self‐assemble into chiral twisted ribbons with opposite handedness, as supported by Cryo‐TEM and circular dichroism (CD) measurements. The system presents thermo‐responsive aggregation behavior and combined transmittance measurements, temperature‐dependent UV, CD, TEM, and micro‐differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that a ribbon‐to‐vesicles transition occurs upon heating. Remarkably, chirality allows easy control of morphology as the self‐assembly into distinct aggregates can be tuned by varying the enantiomeric excess of the amphiphile, giving access to flat sheets, helical ribbons, and twisted ribbons.

Ala–Ala dipeptides with a semi-perfluoroalkyl chain: chirality driven molecular packing difference and self-assembly driven chiral transfer

The chirality of amino acids triggered the chiral molecular stacking of dipeptides and, eventually, transferred to the semi-perfluoroalkyl chain.

Synergistic Effect of Two Organogelators for the Creation of Bio-Based, Shape-Stable Phase-Change Materials

Two organogelators of different chemistry (a fatty acid derivative and a bis-urea derivative), as well as their blends, were used to impart shape stability to a bio-based phase-change material (PCM) bearing a near-ambient phase-transition temperature. Characterization of the individual gelators and their blends revealed their ability to immobilize the PCM by forming a continuous fibrillar network. The fibrils formed by the fatty acid derivative were helical, while the bis-urea derivative formed smooth fibrils. Also, the bis-urea derivative formed a continuous network at a lower critical concentration than the fatty acid derivative. At each fixed concentration, the bis-urea derivative yielded gels with higher thermal stability than the fatty acid derivative. The two gelators blended in certain ratios demonstrated a strong synergistic effect, providing gels with a significantly higher modulus (∼20-fold) and yield stress (∼1.5-fold) than each gelator individually. PCM gelation did not significantly affect its thermal behavior, however, affected its crystalline morphology. The gelled PCM displayed stacked structures, consisting of alternating pure PCM layers separated by layers formed by gelator fibrils. The phase diagram of the triple system comprising both gelators and PCM demonstrated either single or double gelation behavior depending on the composition. These findings may provide guidelines for the development of novel, shape-stable PCMs, which could be of potential use in various thermal energy storage applications.

Light-directed trapping of metastable intermediates in a self-assembly process

Self-assembly is a dynamic process that often takes place through a stepwise pathway involving formation of kinetically favored metastable intermediates prior to generation of a thermodynamically preferred supramolecular framework. Although trapping intermediates in these pathways can provide significant information about both their nature and the overall self-assembly process, it is a challenging venture without altering temperature, concentrations, chemical compositions and morphologies. Herein, we report a highly efficient and potentially general method for "trapping" metastable intermediates in self-assembly processes that is based on a photopolymerization strategy. By employing a chiral perylene-diimide possessing a diacetylene containing an alkyl chain, we demonstrated that the metastable intermediates, including nanoribbons, nanocoils and nanohelices, can be effectively trapped by using UV promoted polymerization before they form thermodynamic tubular structures. The strategy developed in this study should be applicable to naturally and synthetically abundant alkyl chain containing self-assembling systems.
