Ethylene/ethane separation in a stable hydrogen-bonded organic framework through a gating mechanism

Self-Healing B ← N-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Exclusive Recognition and Separation of Toluene from Methyl-Cyclohexane

The effective separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons remains a notable challenge in the petrochemical industry. Herein, we report a self-healing three-dimensional B ← N-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), BN-HOF-1, constructed from discrete B ← N inclusive dimers through weak C-H···F and C-H···N hydrogen-bonding interactions. To make use of the specific recognition of the B ← N inclusive dimers for the toluene molecules and the reversible ad/desorption nature of this novel HOF, BN-HOF-1 can exclusively recognize and separate toluene from the mixtures of toluene-methylcyclohexane, thus generating 99.6% pure toluene from its mixtures after gentle heating, the recorded value among any reported materials for toluene purification. After the toluene molecules were released from the framework, it becomes the condensed BN-HOF-1a, which can be further reused for the highly selective recognition and purification of toluene from its binary mixtures, through the reversible structural recovery back to BN-HOF-1. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular modeling studies reveal that the high specific toluene recognition is attributed to the complementary electrostatic potential between the host B ← N inclusive dimers and the guest toluene, while the self-healing and recovery nature of this HOF is attributed to weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Flexible hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs): opportunities and challenges

Flexible behavior is one of the most fascinating features of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), which represent an emerging class of porous materials that are self-assembled via H-bonding between organic building units. Due to their unique flexibility, HOFs can undergo structural changes or transformations in response to various stimuli (physical or chemical). Taking advantage of this unique structural feature, flexible HOFs show potential in multifunctional applications such as gas storage/separation, molecular recognition, sensing, proton conductivity, biomedicine, etc. While some other flexible porous materials have been extensively studied, the dynamic behavior of HOFs remains relatively less explored. This perspective highlights the inherent flexible properties of HOFs, discusses their different flexible behaviors, including pore size/shape changes, interpenetration/stacking manner, H-bond breaking/reconstruction, and local dynamic behavior, and highlights their potential applications. We believe that this perspective will not only contribute to HOF chemistry and materials science, but will also facilitate the ongoing extensive research on dynamic porous materials.

Hierarchical Micro- and Mesoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8-Based Enzyme Hybrid for Combination Antimicrobial by Lysozyme and Lactoferrin

Pathogenic bacteria have consistently posed a formidable challenge to human health, creating the critical need for effective antibacterial solutions. In response, enzyme-metal-organic framework (MOF) composites have emerged as a promising class of antibacterial agents. This study focuses on the development of an enzyme-MOF composite based on HZIF-8, incorporating the advantages of simple synthesis, ZIF-8 antibacterial properties, lysozyme hydrolysis, and high biological safety. Through a one-pot method, core-shell nanoparticles (HZIF-8) were synthesized. This structure enables efficient immobilization of lysozyme and lactoferrin within the HZIF-8, resulting in the formation of the lysozyme-lactoferrin@HZIF-8 (LYZ-LF@HZIF-8) composite. Upon exposure to light irradiation, HZIF-8 itself possessed antibacterial properties. Lysozyme initiated the degradation of bacterial peptidoglycan and lactoferrin synergistically enhanced the antibacterial effect of lysozyme. All of the above ultimately contributed to comprehensive antibacterial activity. Antibacterial assessments demonstrated the efficacy of the LYZ-LF@HZIF-8 composite, effectively eradicating Staphylococcus aureus at a cell density of 1.5 × 106 CFU/mL with a low dosage of 200 μg/mL and completely inactivating Escherichia coli at 400 μg/mL with the same cell density. The enzyme-MOF composite exhibited significant and durable antibacterial efficacy, with no apparent cytotoxicity in vitro, thereby unveiling expansive prospects for applications in the medical and food industries.

Ideal Cage-like Pores for Molecular Sieving of Butane Isomers with High Purity and Record Productivity

n-C4H10 and iso-C4H10 are both important petrochemical raw materials. Considering the coexistence of the isomers in the production process, it is necessary to achieve their efficient separation through an economical way. However, to obtain high-purity n-C4H10 and iso-C4H10 in one-step separation process, developing iso-C4H10-exclusion adsorbents with high n-C4H10 adsorption capacity is crucial. Herein, we report a cage-like MOF (SIFSIX-Cu-TPA) with small windows and large cavities which can selectively allow smaller n-C4H10 enter the pore and accommodate a large amount of n-C4H10 simultaneously. Adsorption isotherms reveal that SIFSIX-Cu-TPA not only completely excludes iso-C4H10 in a wide temperature range, but also exhibits a very high n-C4H10 adsorption capacity of 94.2 cm3 g-1 at 100 kPa and 298 K, which is the highest value among iso-C4H10-exclusion-type adsorbents. Breakthrough experiments show that SIFSIX-Cu-TPA has excellent n/iso-C4H10 separation performance and can achieve a record-high productivity of iso-C4H10 (3.2 mol kg-1) with high purity (>99.95 %) as well as 3.0 mol kg-1 of n-C4H10 (>99 %) in one separation circle. More importantly, SIFSIX-Cu-TPA can realize the efficient separation of butanes at different flow rates, temperatures, as well as under high humid condition, which indicates that SIFSIX-Cu-TPA can be deemed as an ideal platform for industrial butane isomers separation.

Facile fabrication of recyclable robust noncovalent porous crystals from low-symmetry helicene derivative

Porous frameworks constructed via noncovalent interactions show wide potential in molecular separation and gas adsorption. However, it remains a major challenge to prepare these materials from low-symmetry molecular building blocks. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate noncovalent porous crystals through modular self-assembly of a low-symmetry helicene racemate. The P and M enantiomers in the racemate first stack into right- and left-handed triangular prisms, respectively, and subsequently the two types of prisms alternatively stack together into a hexagonal network with one-dimensional channels with a diameter of 14.5 Å. Remarkably, the framework reveals high stability upon heating to 275 °C, majorly due to the abundant π-interactions between the complementarily engaged helicene building blocks. Such porous framework can be readily prepared by fast rotary evaporation, and is easy to recycle and repeatedly reform. The refined porous structure and enriched π-conjugation also favor the selective adsorption of a series of small molecules.

Strategy to Efficient Photodynamic Therapy for Antibacterium: Donor-Acceptor Structure in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

While the construction of a donor-acceptor (D-A) structure has gained great attention across various scientific disciplines, such structures are seldomly reported within the field of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). Herein, a D-A based HOF is synthesized, where the adjacent D-A pairs are connected by hydrogen bonds instead of the conventionally employed covalent bonds. This structural feature imparts material with a reduced energy gap between excited state and triplet state, thereby facilitating the intersystem crossing (ISC) and boosting the generation rate of single oxygen (quantum yield = 0.98). Consequently, the resulting material shows high performance for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT). The impact of D-A moiety is evident when comparing this finding to a parallel study conducted on an isoreticular HOF without a D-A structure. The study presented here provides in-depth insights into the photophysical properties of D-A pair in a hydrogen-bonded network, opening a new avenue to the design of innovative materials for efficient PDT.

Supramolecular Entanglement in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enables Flexible-Robust Porosity for Highly Efficient Purification of Natural Gas

The development of porous materials with flexible-robust characteristics shows some unique advantages to target high performance for gas separation, but remains a daunting challenge to achieve so far. Herein, we report a carboxyl-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (ZJU-HOF-8a) with flexible-robust porosity for efficient purification of natural gas. ZJU-HOF-8a features a four-fold interpenetrated structure with dia topology, wherein abundant supramolecular entanglements are formed between the adjacent subnetworks through weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This structural configuration could not only stabilize the whole framework to establish the permanent porosity, but also enable the framework to show some flexibility due to its weak intermolecular interactions (so-called flexible-robust framework). The flexible-robust porosity of ZJU-HOF-8a was exclusively confirmed by gas sorption isotherms and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, showing that the flexible pore pockets can be opened by C3H8 and n-C4H10 molecules rather by C2H6 and CH4. This leads to notably higher C3H8 and n-C4H10 uptakes with enhanced selectivities than C2H6 over CH4 under ambient conditions, affording one of the highest n-C4H10/CH4 selectivities. The gas-loaded single-crystal structures coupled with theoretical simulations reveal that the loading of n-C4H10 can induce an obvious framework expansion along with pore pocket opening to improve n-C4H10 uptake and selectivity, while not for C2H6 adsorption. This work suggests an effective strategy of designing flexible-robust HOFs for improving gas separation properties.

Precise Pore Engineering of Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ternary Mixtures

One-step purification of ethylene from ternary mixtures (C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6) can greatly reduce the energy consumption of the separation process, but it is extremely challenging. Herein, we use crystal engineering and reticular chemistry to introduce unsaturated bonds (ethynyl and alkyne) into ligands, and successfully design and synthesized two novel Zr-MOCs (ZrT-1-ethenyl and ZrT-1-alkyne). The introduction of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds provides abundant adsorption sites within the framework while modulating the pore window size. Comprehensive characterization techniques including single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, as well as electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS) confirm that ZrT-1-ethenyl and ZrT-1-alkyne possess an isostructural framework with ZrT-1 and ZrT-1-Me, respectively. Adsorption isotherms and breakthrough experiments combined with theoretical calculations demonstrate that ZrT-1-ethenyl can effectively remove trace C2H2 and C2H6 in C2H4 and achieve separation of C2H2 from C2H4 and CO2. ZrT-1-ethenyl can also directly purify C2H4 in liquid solutions. This work provides a benchmark for MOCs that one-step purification of ethylene from ternary mixtures.

Structural Design and Energy and Environmental Applications of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: A Systematic Review

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability. More importantly, due to the significant potential of the latest HOF-related research for addressing energy and environmental issues, this work discusses the latest advances in the methods of energy storage and conversion, energy substance generation and isolation, environmental detection and isolation, degradation and transformation, and biological applications. Furthermore, a discussion of the coupling orientation of HOF in the cross-cutting fields of energy and environment is presented for the first time. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for the development of HOFs to advance their energy and environmental applications are discussed.

Chemoselectivity Inversion of Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Particle Size Tuning in the Micrometer Regime

Gated adsorption is one of the unique physical properties of flexible metal-organic frameworks with high application potential in selective adsorption and sensing of molecules. Despite recent studies that have provided some guidelines in understanding and designing structural flexibility for controlling gate opening by chemical modification of the secondary building units, currently, there is no established strategy to design a flexible MOF showing selective gated adsorption for a specific guest molecule. In a present contribution it is demonstrated for the first time, that the selectivity in the gate opening of a particular compound can be tuned, changed, and even reversed using particle size engineering DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane, DUT = Dresden University of Technology) experiences phase transition from open (op) to closed (cp) pore phase upon removal of solvent from the pores. Microcrystals show selective reopening in the presence of dichloromethane (DCM) over alcohols. Crystal downsizing to micron size unexpectedly reverses the gate opening selectivity, causing DUT-8(Zn) to open its nanosized pores for alcohols but suppressing the responsivity toward DCM.

In Situ Transformation of an Amorphous Supramolecular Coating to a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Membrane to Trigger Selective Gas Permeation

We introduce a "solution-processing-transformation" strategy, deploying solvent vapor as scaffolds, to fabricate high-quality hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) membranes. This strategy can overcome the mismatch in processing conditions and crystal growth thermodynamics faced during the facile solution processing of the membrane. The procedure includes the vapor-trigged in situ transformation of dense amorphous supramolecules to crystalline HOF-16, with HOF-11 as the transient state. The mechanism involves a vapor-activated dissolution-precipitation equilibrium shifting and hydrogen bonding-guided molecule rearrangement, elucidated through combined experimental and theoretical analysis. Upon removal of the molecular scaffolds, the resulting HOF-16 membranes showcase significant improvement in hydrogen separation performance over their amorphous counterparts and previously reported HOF membranes. The method's broad applicability is evidenced by successfully extending it to other substrates and HOF structures. This study provides a fundamental understanding of guest-induced ordered supramolecular assembly and paves the way for the advanced manufacture of high-performance HOF membranes for gas separation processes.

A high density nanopore 3-triangulene kagome lattice

Nanopore-containing two-dimensional materials have been explored for a wide range of applications including filtration, sensing, catalysis, energy storage and conversion. Triangulenes have recently been experimentally synthesized in a variety of sizes. In this regard, using these systems as building blocks, we theoretically examined 3-triangulene kagome crystals with inherent holes of ∼12 Å diameter and a greater density array of nanopores (≥1013 cm-2) compared to conventional 2D systems. The energetic, electronic, and transport properties of pristine and B/N-doped 3-triangulene kagome crystals were evaluated through a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function method. The simulated scanning tunneling microscopy images clearly capture electronic perturbation around the doped sites, which can be used to distinguish the pristine system from the doped systems. The viability of precisely controlling the band structure and transport properties by changing the type and concentration of doping atoms is demonstrated. The findings presented herein can potentially widen the applicability of these systems that combine unique electronic properties and intrinsically high-density pores, which can pave the way for the next generation of nanopore-based devices.

Balancing the Kinetic and Thermodynamic Synergetic Effect of Doped Carbon Molecular Sieves for Selective Separation of C2H4/C2H6

Selective separation of ethylene and ethane (C2H4/C2H6) is a formidable challenge due to their close molecular size and boiling point. Compared to industry-used cryogenic distillation, adsorption separation would offer a more energy-efficient solution when an efficient adsorbent is available. Herein, a class of C2H4/C2H6 separation adsorbents, doped carbon molecular sieves (d-CMSs) is reported which are prepared from the polymerization and subsequent carbonization of resorcinol, m-phenylenediamine, and formaldehyde in ethanol solution. The study demonstrated that the polymer precursor themselves can be a versatile platform for modifying the pore structure and surface functional groups of their derived d-CMSs. The high proportion of pores centered at 3.5 Å in d-CMSs contributes significantly to achieving a superior kinetic selectivity of 205 for C2H4/C2H6 separation. The generated pyrrolic-N and pyridinic-N functional sites in d-CMSs contribute to a remarkable elevation of Henry selectivity to 135 due to the enhancement of the surface polarity in d-CMSs. By balancing the synergistic effects of kinetics and thermodynamics, d-CMSs achieve efficient separation of C2H4/C2H6. Polymer-grade C2H4 of 99.71% purity can be achieved with 75% recovery using the devised d-CMSs as reflected in a two-bed vacuum swing adsorption simulation.

The drug loading capacity prediction and cytotoxicity analysis of metal-organic frameworks using stacking algorithms of machine learning

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown excellent performance in the field of drug delivery. Despite the synthesis of a vast array of MOFs exceeding 100,000 varieties, certain formulations have exhibited suboptimal performance characteristics. Therefore, there is a pressing need to enhance their efficacy by identifying MOFs with superior drug loading capacities and minimal cytotoxicity, which can be achieved through machine learning (ML). In this study, a stacking regression model was developed to predict drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity of MOFs using datasets compiled from various literature sources. The model exhibited exceptional predictive capabilities, achieving R2 values of 0.907 for drug loading capacity and 0.856 for cytotoxicity. Furthermore, various model interpretation methods including partial dependence plots, individual conditional expectation, Shapley additive explanation, decision tree, random forest, CatBoost Regressor, and light gradient-boosting machine were employed for feature importance analysis. The results revealed that specific metal atoms such as Zn, Cr, Fe, Zr, and Cu significantly influenced the drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity of MOFs. Through model validation encompassing experimental validation and computational verification, the reliability of the model was thoroughly established. In general, it is a good practice to use ML methods for predicting drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity analysis of MOFs, guiding the development of future property prediction methods for MOFs.

Vitrification-enabled enhancement of proton conductivity in hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are versatile materials with potential applications in proton conduction. Traditional approaches involve incorporating humidity control to address grain boundary challenges for proton conduction. This study finds vitrification as an alternative strategy to eliminate grain boundary effect in HOFs by rapidly melt quenching the kinetically stable HOF-SXU-8 to glassy state HOF-g. Notably, a remarkable enhancement in proton conductivity without humidity was achieved after vitrification, from 1.31 × 10-7 S cm-1 to 5.62× 10-2 S cm-1 at 100 °C. Long term stability test showed negligible performance degradation, and even at 30 °C, the proton conductivity remained at high level of 1.2 × 10-2 S cm-1. Molecule dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray total scattering experiments reveal the HOF-g system is consisted of three kinds of clusters, i.e., 1,5-Naphthalenedisulfonic acid (1,5-NSA) anion clusters, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) molecule clusters, and H+-H2O clusters. In which, the H+ plays an important role to bridge these clusters and the high conductivity is mainly related to the H+ on H3O+. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing HOFs, enabling efficient proton conduction, and advancing energy conversion and storage devices.

Three-Dimensional Crystalline Organic Framework Stabilized by Molecular Mortise-and-Tenon Jointing

Three-dimensional (3D) crystalline organic frameworks with complex topologies, high surface area, and low densities afford a variety of application prospects. However, the design and construction of these frameworks have been largely limited to systems containing polyhedron-shaped building blocks or those relying on component interpenetration. Here, we report the synthesis of a 3D crystalline organic framework based on molecular mortise-and-tenon jointing. This new material takes advantage of tetra(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene and chlorinated bis(benzodioxaborole)benzene as building blocks and is driven by dative B-N bonds. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the framework reveals the presence of two-dimensional (2D) layers with helical channels that are formed presumably during the boron-nitrogen coordination process. The protrusion of dichlorobenzene units from the upper and lower surfaces of the 2D layers facilitates the key mortise-and-tenon connections. These connections enable the interlocking of adjacent layers and the stabilization of an overall 3D framework. The resulting framework is endowed with high porosity and attractive mechanical properties, rendering it potentially suitable for the removal of impurities from acetylene.

Host-Host Interactions Enhanced the Structural Rigidity in a 6-Fold Interpenetrated Diamondoid Metal-Organic Framework Exhibiting C2H2/C2H4 Separation

Multi-interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited excellent performance in selective adsorption due to the variable post-interspersed flexibility, but the design and control remain challenging. Herein, two anthracene-based ligands, 4,4'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2L1) and 9,10-di(pyridin-4-yl)anthracene (L2), are used to construct a new three-dimensional 6-fold interpenetrated MOF [Zn(L1)(L2)]n (NBU-X1), which exhibits multiple C-H···π interactions that enhance the structural rigidity, thereby entangling with a C2H2/C2H4 separation performance. In this material, the incorporation of abundant anthracene rings within the framework not only partitions and restricts the pore window size to a quasi-double pore but also stabilizes it through host-host interactions. The structural stability upon heating or guest displacement/removal has been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, in contrast to the extreme flexibility of most multi-interpenetrated MOFs. The performance of purifying C2H4 from C2H2/C2H4 mixtures has been proved by dynamic breakthrough tests.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Derived 2D N, O Co-Doped Carbon Nanobelt with Tunable Pseudocapacitive Contribution for Efficient Capacitive Deionization

Defect engineering is recognized as an attractive method for modulating the electronic structure and physicochemical characteristics of carbon materials. Exploiting heteroatom-doped porous carbon with copious active sites has attracted great attention for capacitive deionization (CDI). However, traditional methods often rely on the utilization of additional heteroatom sources and strong corrosive activators, suffering from low doping efficiency, insufficient doping level, and potential biotoxicity. Herein, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are employed as precursors to synthesize N, O co-doped porous carbon via a simple and green reverse defect engineering strategy, achieving controllable heavy doping of heteroatoms. The N, O co-doping triggers significant pseudocapacitive contribution and the surface pore structure supports the formation of the electric double layer. Therefore, when HOF-derived N, O co-doped carbon is used as CDI electrodes, a superior salt adsorption capacity of 32.29 ± 1.42 mg g-1 and an outstanding maximum salt adsorption rate of 10.58 ± 0.46 mg g-1 min-1 at 1.6 V in 500 mg L-1 NaCl solution are achieved, which are comparable to those of state-of-the-art carbonaceous electrodes. This work exemplifies the effectiveness of the reverse nitrogen-heavy doping strategy on improving the carbon structure, shedding light on the further development of rational designed electrode materials for CDI.

Gas-Triggered Gate-Opening in a Flexible Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework

The development of novel soft porous crystals (SPCs) that can be transformed from nonporous to porous crystals is significant because of their promising applications in gas storage and separation. Herein, we systematically investigated for the first time the gas-triggered gate-opening behavior of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) with flexible building blocks. FCOF-5, a 3D COF containing C-O single bonds in the backbone, exhibits a unique "S-shaped" isotherm for various gases, such as CO2, C2, and C3 hydrocarbons. According to in situ characterization, FCOF-5 undergoes a pressure-induced closed-to-open structural transition due to the rotation of flexible C-O single bonds in the framework. Furthermore, the gated hysteretic sorption property of FCOF-5 can enable its use as an absorbent for the efficient removal of C3H4 from C3H4/C3H6 mixtures. Therefore, 3D COFs synthesized from flexible building blocks represent a new type of SPC with gate-opening characteristics. This study will strongly inspire us to design other 3D COF-based SPCs for interesting applications in the future.

Scalable Synthesis of Robust MOF for Challenging Ethylene Purification and Propylene Recovery with Record Productivity

Ethylene (C2H4) purification and propylene (C3H6) recovery are highly relevant in polymer synthesis, yet developing physisorbents for these industrial separation faces the challenges of merging easy scalability, economic feasibility, high moisture stability with great separation efficiency. Herein, we reported a robust and scalable MOF (MAC-4) for simultaneous recovery of C3H6 and C2H4. Through creating nonpolar pores decorated by accessible N/O sites, MAC-4 displays top-tier uptakes and selectivities for C2H6 and C3H6 over C2H4 at ambient conditions. Molecular modelling combined with infrared spectroscopy revealed that C2H6 and C3H6 molecules were trapped in the framework with stronger contacts relative to C2H4. Breakthrough experiments demonstrated exceptional separation performance for binary C2H6/C2H4 and C3H6/C2H4 as well as ternary C3H6/C2H6/C2H4 mixtures, simultaneously affording record productivities of 27.4 and 36.2 L kg-1 for high-purity C2H4 (≥99.9 %) and C3H6 (≥99.5 %). MAC-4 was facilely prepared at deckgram-scale under reflux condition within 3 hours, making it as a smart MOF to address challenging gas separations.

Supramolecular polynuclear clusters sustained cubic hydrogen bonded frameworks with octahedral cages for reversible photochromism

Developing supramolecular porous crystalline frameworks with tailor-made architectures from advanced secondary building units (SBUs) remains a pivotal challenge in reticular chemistry. Particularly for hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), construction of geometrical cavities through secondary units has been rarely achieved. Herein, a body-centered cubic HOF (TCA_NH4) with octahedral cages was constructed by a C3-symmetric building block and NH4+ node-assembled cluster (NH4)4(COOH)8(H2O)2 that served as supramolecular secondary building units (SSBUs), akin to the polynuclear SBUs in reticular chemistry. Specifically, the octahedral cages could encapsulate four homogenous haloforms including CHCl3, CHBr3, and CHI3 with truncated octahedron configuration. Crystallographic evidence revealed the cages served as spatially-confined nanoreactors, enabling fast, broadband photochromic effect associated with the reversible photo/thermal transformation between encapsulated CHI3 and I2. Overall, this work provides a strategy by shaping SSBUs to expand the framework topology of HOFs and a prototype of hydrogen-bonded nanoreactors to accommodate reversible photochromic reactions.

Charge-Assisted Ionic Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Designable and Stabilized Multifunctional Materials

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of crystalline framework materials assembled by hydrogen bonds. HOFs have the advantages of high crystallinity, mild reaction conditions, good solution processability, and reproducibility. Coupled with the reversibility and flexibility of hydrogen bonds, HOFs can be assembled into a wide diversity of crystalline structures. Since the bonding energy of hydrogen bonds is lower than that of ligand and covalent bonds, the framework of HOFs is prone to collapse after desolventisation and the stability is not high, which limits the development and application of HOFs. In recent years, numerous stable and functional HOFs have been developed by π-π stacking, highly interpenetrated networks, charge-assisted, ligand-bond-assisted, molecular weaving, and covalent cross-linking. Charge-assisted ionic HOFs introduce electrostatic attraction into HOFs to improve stability while enriching structural diversity and functionality. In this paper, we review the development, the principles of rational design and assembly of charge-assisted ionic HOFs, and introduces the different building block construction modes of charge-assisted ionic HOFs. Highlight the applications of charge-assisted ionic HOFs in gas adsorption and separation, proton conduction, biological applications, etc., and prospects for the diverse design of charge-assisted ionic HOFs structures and multifunctional applications.

Orthogonal Postsynthetic Copolymerization of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks into a PolyHOF Membrane

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have shown promise in various fields; however, the construction of HOF/polymer hybrid membranes that can maintain both structural and functional integrity remains challenging. In this study, we here fabricated a new HOF (HOF-50) with reserved polymerizable allyl group via charge-assisted H-bonds between the carboxylate anion and amidinium, and subsequently copolymerized the HOF with monomers to construct a covalently bonded HOF/polymer hybrid (polyHOF) membrane. The resulting polyHOF membrane not only exhibits customizable mechanical properties and extreme stability, but also shows an exceptional ratiometric luminescent temperature-sensing function with very high sensitivity and visibility even when the lanthanide content is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the reported mixed-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and lanthanide-doped covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This orthogonal postsynthesis copolymerization strategy may provide a general approach for preparing covalently connected HOF/polymer hybrid membranes for diverse applications.

Macrocycle-Based Hierarchically Porous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous crystalline materials. The pores in HOFs are usually non-covalent extrinsic pores constructed through the formation of the framework. Supramolecular macrocycles with intrinsic pores in their structures are good candidates for constructing HOFs with intrinsic pores from the macrocycles themselves, thus leading to hierarchically porous structures. Combining the macrocycle and HOFs will endow these hierarchically porous materials with enhanced properties and special functionalities. This review summarizes recent advances in macrocycle-based HOFs, including the macrocycles used for constructing HOFs, the hierarchically porous structures of the HOFs, and the applications induced by the hierarchically HOFs porous structures. This review provides insights for future research on macrocycle-based hierarchically porous HOFs and the appropriate applications of the unique structures.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for membrane separation

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous materials that are formed through the interconnection of organic or metal-organic building units via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The remarkable flexibility and reversibility of hydrogen bonds, coupled with the customizable nature of organic units, endow HOFs with mild synthesis conditions, high crystallinity, solvent processability, and facile self-healing and regeneration properties. Consequently, these features have garnered significant attention across various fields, particularly in the realm of membrane separation. Herein, we present an overview of the recent advances in HOF-based membranes, including their advanced fabrication strategies and fascinating applications in membrane separation. To attain the desired HOF-based membranes, careful consideration is dedicated to crucial factors such as pore size, stability, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and surface charge of the HOFs. Additionally, diverse preparation methods for HOF-based membranes, including blending, in situ growth, solution-processing, and electrophoretic deposition, have been analyzed. Furthermore, applications of HOF-based membranes in gas separation, water treatment, fuel cells, and other emerging application areas are presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects of HOF-based membranes are critically pointed out.

Smart-Responsive HOF Heterostructures with Multiple Spatial-Resolved Emission Modes toward Photonic Security Platform

Luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with the unique dynamics and versatile functional sites hold great potential application in information security, yet most of responsive HOFs focus on the single-component framework with restrained emission control, limiting further applications in advanced confidential information protection. Herein, the first smart-responsive HOF heterostructure with multiple spatial-resolved emission modes for covert photonic security platform is reported. The HOF heterostructures are prepared by integrating different HOFs into a single microwire based on a hydrogen-bond-assisted epitaxial growth method. The distinct responsive behaviors of HOFs permit the heterostructure to simultaneously display the thermochromism via the framework transformation and the acidichromism via the protonation effect, thus generating multiple emission modes. The dual stimuli-controlled spatial-resolved emission modes constitute the fingerprint of a heterostructure, and enable the establishment of the smart-responsive photonic barcode with multiple convert states, which further demonstrate the dynamic coding capability and enhanced security in anticounterfeiting label applications. These results offer a promising route to design function-oriented smart responsive HOF microdevices toward advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Advanced Soft Porous Organic Crystal with Multiple Gas-Induced Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations for Highly Selective Separation of Propylene and Propane

Soft porous organic crystals with stimuli-responsive single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations are important tools for unraveling their structural transformations at the molecular level, which is of crucial importance for the rapid development of stimuli-responsive systems. Carefully balancing the crystallinity and flexibility of materials is the prerequisite to construct advanced organic crystals with SCSC, which remains challenging. Herein, a squaraine-based soft porous organic crystal (SPOC-SQ) with multiple gas-induced SCSC transformations and temperature-regulated gate-opening adsorption of various C1-C3 hydrocarbons is reported. SPOC-SQ is featured with both crystallinity and flexibility, which enable pertaining the single crystallinity of the purely organic framework during accommodating gas molecules and directly unveiling gas-framework interplays by SCXRD technique. Thanks to the excellent softness of SPOC-SQ crystals, multiple metastable single crystals are obtained after gas removals, which demonstrates a molecular-scale shape-memory effect. Benefiting from the single crystallinity, the molecule-level structural evolutions of the SPOC-SQ crystal framework during gas departure are uncovered. With the unique temperature-dependent gate-opening structural transformations, SPOC-SQ exhibits distinctly different absorption behaviors towards C3 H6 and C3 H8 , and highly efficient and selective separation of C3 H6 /C3 H8 (v/v, 50/50) is achieved at 273 K. Such advanced soft porous organic crystals are of both theoretical values and practical implications.

Ethane/Ethylene Separations in Flexible Diamondoid Coordination Networks via an Ethane-Induced Gate-Opening Mechanism

Separating ethane (C2H6) from ethylene (C2H4) is an essential and energy-intensive process in the chemical industry. Here, we report two flexible diamondoid coordination networks, X-dia-1-Ni and X-dia-1-Ni0.89Co0.11, that exhibit gate-opening between narrow-pore (NP) and large-pore (LP) phases for C2H6, but not for C2H4. X-dia-1-Ni0.89Co0.11 thereby exhibited a type F-IV isotherm at 273 K with no C2H6 uptake and a high uptake (111 cm3 g-1, 1 atm) for the NP and LP phases, respectively. Conversely, the LP phase exhibited a low uptake of C2H4 (12.2 cm3 g-1). This C2H6/C2H4 uptake ratio of 9.1 for X-dia-1-Ni0.89Co0.11 far surpassed those of previously reported physisorbents, many of which are C2H4-selective. In situ variable-pressure X-ray diffraction and modeling studies provided insight into the abrupt C2H6-induced structural NP to LP transformation. The promise of pure gas isotherms and, more generally, flexible coordination networks for gas separations was validated by dynamic breakthrough studies, which afforded high-purity (99.9%) C2H4 in one step.

Photoresponsive Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks-Enabled Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistors for Sensitive Bioanalysis

A facile route for exponential magnification of transconductance (gm) in an organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) is still lacking. Herein, photoresponsive hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (PR-HOFs) have been shown to be efficient for gm magnification in a typical poly(ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) OPECT. Specifically, 450 nm light stimulation of 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid) pyrene (H4TBAPy)-based HOF could efficiently modulate the device characteristics, leading to the considerable gm magnification over 78 times from 0.114 to 8.96 mS at zero Vg. In linkage with a DNA nanomachine-assisted steric hindrance amplification strategy, the system was then interfaced with the microRNA-triggered structural DNA evolution toward the sensitive detection of a model target microRNA down to 0.1 fM. This study first reveals HOFs-enabled efficient gm magnification in organic electronics and its application for sensitive biomolecular detection.

Luminescent Porous Organic Crystals for Adsorptive Separation of Toluene and Methylcyclohexane

A butterfly-shaped phenothiazine derivative, PTTCN, was synthesized to obtain pure organic porous crystals for the highly efficient absorptive separation of toluene (Tol) and methylcyclohexane (Mcy). Due to the presence of three polar cyano groups and nonplanar conformation, these molecules self-assembled into a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (X-HOF-5) with distinct cavities capable of accommodating Tol molecules through multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. Upon solvent removal via heating, the activated X-HOF-5 retained its cavity structure albeit with altered stacking arrangements, accompanied by a remarkable fluorescent color change from cyan to green. X-HOF-5a can undergo a phase transformation into X-HOF-5 upon reabsorption of Tol, while exhibiting no accommodation of Mcy due to the weak intermolecular interaction between PTTCN and Mcy. This suggests that the activated HOF material prefers Tol over Mcy. Moreover, X-HOF-5a may selectively accommodate Tol in a Tol/Mcy equimolar mixture, and the purity of Tol can reach 97% after release from the framework. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the HOF material exhibits recyclability without any discernible loss in performance.

Hydrogen bond unlocking-driven pore structure control for shifting multi-component gas separation function

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) as the most extensive and output chemical, from complex multi-components is of great significance but highly challenging. Herein we demonstrate that precise pore structure tuning by controlling the network hydrogen bonds in two highly-related porous coordination networks can shift the efficient C2H4 separation function from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 ternary mixture to CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 quaternary mixture system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the different amino groups on the triazolate ligands resulted in the change of the hydrogen bonding in the host network, which led to changes in the pore shape and pore chemistry. Gas adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and gas-loaded crystal structure analysis indicated that the coordination network Zn-fa-atz (2) weakened the affinity for three C2 hydrocarbons synchronously including C2H4 but enhanced the CO2 adsorption due to the optimized CO2-host interaction and the faster CO2 diffusion, leading to effective C2H4 production from the CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 mixture in one step based on the experimental and simulated breakthrough data. Moreover, it can be shaped into spherical pellets with maintained porosity and separation performance.

Interaction-selective molecular sieving adsorbent for direct separation of ethylene from senary C2-C4 olefin/paraffin mixture

Olefin/paraffin separations are among the most energy-intensive processes in the petrochemical industry, with ethylene being the most widely consumed chemical feedstock. Adsorptive separation utilizing molecular sieving adsorbents can optimize energy efficiency, whereas the size-exclusive mechanism alone cannot achieve multiple olefin/paraffin sieving in a single adsorbent. Herein, an unprecedented sieving adsorbent, BFFOUR-Cu-dpds (BFFOUR = BF4-, dpds = 4,4'-bipyridinedisulfide), is reported for simultaneous sieving of C2-C4 olefins from their corresponding paraffins. The interlayer spaces can be selectively opened through stronger guest-host interactions induced by unsaturated C = C bonds in olefins, as opposed to saturated paraffins. In equimolar six-component breakthrough experiments (C2H4/C2H6/C3H6/C3H8/n-C4H8/n-C4H10), BFFOUR-Cu-dpds can simultaneously divide olefins from paraffins in the first column, while high-purity ethylene ( > 99.99%) can be directly obtained through the subsequent column using granular porous carbons. Moreover, gas-loaded single-crystal analysis, in-situ infrared spectroscopy measurements, and computational simulations demonstrate the accommodation patterns, interaction bonds, and energy pathways for olefin/paraffin separations.

Temperature-dependent molecular sieving of fluorinated propane/propylene mixtures by a flexible-robust metal-organic framework

The electronics industry necessitates highly selective adsorption separation of hexafluoropropylene (C3F6) from perfluoropropane (C3F8), which poses a challenge due to their similar physiochemical properties. In this work, we present a microporous flexible-robust metal-organic framework (Ca-tcpb) with thermoregulatory gate opening, a rare phenomenon that allows tunable sieving of C3F8/C3F6. Remarkably, the temperature-dependent adsorption behavior enhances the discrimination between the larger C3F8 and the smaller C3F6, resulting in unprecedented C3F6/C3F8 selectivity (over 10,000) compared to other well-known porous materials at an optimal temperature (298 K). Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate that high-purity C3F8 (over 99.999%) could be obtained from a C3F6/C3F8 (10:90) mixture under ambient conditions. The unique attributes of this material encompass exceptional adsorption selectivity, remarkable structural stability, and outstanding separation performance, positioning it as a highly promising candidate for C3F6/C3F8 separation. Single-crystal structural analysis of C3F6-loaded Ca-tcpb and theoretical calculations elucidate the host-guest interaction via multiple intermolecular interactions.

A molecular sieve with ultrafast adsorption kinetics for propylene separation

The design of molecular sieves is vital for gas separation, but it suffers from a long-standing issue of slow adsorption kinetics due to the intrinsic contradiction between molecular sieving and diffusion within restricted nanopores. We report a molecular sieve ZU-609 with local sieving channels that feature molecular sieving gates and rapid diffusion channels. The precise cross-sectional cutoff of molecular sieving gates enables the exclusion of propane from propylene. The coexisting large channels constituted by sulfonic anions and helically arranged metal-organic architectures allow the fast adsorption kinetics of propylene, and the measured propylene diffusion coefficient in ZU-609 is one to two orders of magnitude higher than previous molecular sieves. Propylene with 99.9% purity is obtained through breakthrough experiments with a productivity of 32.2 L kg-1.

Self-Healing Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Low-Concentration Ammonia Capture

The self-healing behavior has been extensively used in intelligent sensing systems capable of molecular recognition. However, most rigid crystalline frameworks, once collapsed under external stimuli like pressure, heat, or vacuum, could hardly recover to their crystalline phases under ambient conditions. Here, we report the self-healing of a new microporous hydrogen-bonded organic framework, FDU-HOF-3 (FDU = Fudan University), for ammonia (NH3) capture and compared it with the established mesoporous HOF-101. With the introduction of low-concentration NH3 into the pores, the HOFs became disordered but were then simply heated under a vacuum to return to their original crystalline states after NH3 removal. Close characterizations revealed that the repeatable self-healing behavior of these HOFs was achieved due to the COOH-NH3 acid-base interactions accompanied by the breaking and regeneration of complementary COOH-COOH hydrogen bonds. FDU-HOF-3 showed a record-capturing capability for low-concentration NH3 (8.13 mmol/g at 25 mbar) among all HOFs and displayed a quick photocurrent decrease after exposure to 250 ppm NH3 for less than 10 s. These self-healing HOFs were used to capture and release NH3 for over 10 cycles without any decrease in the adsorption capacities.

Multistate structures in a hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework with diverse resistive switching behaviors

The inherent structural flexibility and reversibility of non-covalent organic frameworks have enabled them to exhibit switchable multistate structures under external stimuli, providing great potential in the field of resistive switching (RS), but not well explored yet. Herein, we report the 0D+1D hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework (HOF-FJU-52), exhibiting diverse and reversible RS behaviors with the high performance. Triggered by the external stimulus of electrical field E at room temperature, HOF-FJU-52 has excellent resistive random-access memory (RRAM) behaviors, comparable to the state-of-the-art materials. When cooling down below 200 K, it was transferred to write-once-read-many-times memory (WORM) behaviors. The two memory behaviors exhibit reversibility on a single crystal device through the temperature changes. The RS mechanism of this non-covalent organic framework has been deciphered at the atomic level by the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, demonstrating that the structural dual-flexibility both in the asymmetric hydrogen bonded dimers within the 0D loops and in the infinite π-π stacking column between the loops and chains contribute to reversible structure transformations between multi-states and thus to its dual RS behaviors.

A Microporous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Based on Hydrogen-Bonding Tetramers for Efficient Xe/Kr Separation

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have been emerging as a new type of very promising microporous materials for gas separation and purification, but few HOFs structures constructed through hydrogen-bonding tetramers have been explored in this field. Herein, we report the first microporous HOF (termed as HOF-FJU-46) afforded by hydrogen-bonding tetramers with 4-fold interpenetrated diamond networks, which shows excellent chemical and thermal stability. What's more, activated HOF-FJU-46 exhibits the highest xenon (Xe) uptake of 2.51 mmol g-1 and xenon/krypton (Kr) selectivity of 19.9 at the ambient condition among the reported HOFs up to date. Dynamic breakthrough tests confirmed the excellent Xe/Kr separation of HOF-FJU-46a, showing high Kr productivity (110 mL g-1 ) and Xe uptake (1.29 mmol g-1 ), as well as good recyclability. The single crystal X-ray diffraction and the molecular simulations revealed that the abundant accessible aromatic and pyrazole rings in the pore channels of HOF-FJU-46a can provide the multiple strong C-H⋅⋅⋅Xe interactions with Xe atoms.

Ortho-Alkoxy-benzamide Directed Formation of a Single Crystalline Hydrogen-bonded Crosslinked Organic Framework and Its Boron Trifluoride Uptake and Catalysis

Boron trifluoride (BF3 ) is a highly corrosive gas widely used in industry. Confining BF3 in porous materials ensures safe and convenient handling and prevents its degradation. Hence, it is highly desired to develop porous materials with high adsorption capacity, high stability, and resistance to BF3 corrosion. Herein, we designed and synthesized a Lewis basic single-crystalline hydrogen-bond crosslinked organic framework (HC OF-50) for BF3 storage and its application in catalysis. Specifically, we introduced self-complementary ortho-alkoxy-benzamide hydrogen-bonding moieties to direct the formation of highly organized hydrogen-bonded networks, which were subsequently photo-crosslinked to generate HC OFs. The HC OF-50 features Lewis basic thioether linkages and electron-rich pore surfaces for BF3 uptake. As a result, HC OF-50 shows a record-high 14.2 mmol/g BF3 uptake capacity. The BF3 uptake in HC OF-50 is reversible, leading to the slow release of BF3 . We leveraged this property to reduce the undesirable chain transfer and termination in the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers. Polymers with higher molecular weights and lower polydispersity were generated compared to those synthesized using BF3  ⋅ Et2 O. The elucidation of the structure-property relationship, as provided by the single-crystal X-ray structures, combined with the high BF3 uptake capacity and controlled sorption, highlights the molecular understanding of framework-guest interactions in addressing contemporary challenges.

Ultrasound programmable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for sono-chemogenetics

The precise control of mechanochemical activation within deep tissues via non-invasive ultrasound holds profound implications for advancing our understanding of fundamental biomedical sciences and revolutionizing disease treatments. However, a theory-guided mechanoresponsive materials system with well-defined ultrasound activation has yet to be explored. Here we present the concept of using porous hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) as toolkits for focused ultrasound programmably triggered drug activation to control specific cellular events in the deep brain, through on-demand scission of the supramolecular interactions. A theoretical model is developed to visualize the mechanochemical scission and ultrasound mechanics, providing valuable guidelines for the rational design of mechanoresponsive materials at the molecular level to achieve programmable and spatiotemporal activation control. To demonstrate the practicality of this approach, we encapsulate designer drug clozapine N-oxide (CNO) into the optimal HOF nanoparticles for FUS gated release to activate engineered G-protein-coupled receptors in the mice and rat ventral tegmental area (VTA), and hence achieved targeted neural circuits modulation even at depth 9 mm with a latency of seconds. This work demonstrates the capability of ultrasound to precisely control molecular interaction and develops ultrasound programmable HOFs to minimally invasive and spatiotemporally control cellular events, thereby facilitating the establishment of precise molecular therapeutic possibilities. We anticipate that this research could serve as a source of inspiration for precise and non-invasive molecular manipulation techniques, potentially applicable in programming molecular robots to achieve sophisticated control over cellular events in deep tissues.

Stimuli-Responsive, Dynamic Supramolecular Organic Frameworks

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) are a class of three-dimensional, potentially porous materials obtained by the self-assembly of organic building blocks held together by weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and dispersion forces. SOFs are being extensively studied for their potential applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, guest encapsulation and sensing. The supramolecular forces that guide their self-assembly endow them with an attractive combination of crystallinity and flexibility, providing intelligent dynamic materials that can respond to external stimuli in a reversible way. The present review article will focus on SOFs showing dynamic behaviour when exposed to different stimuli, highlighting fundamental aspects such as the combination of tectons and supramolecular interactions involved in the framework formation, structure-property relationship and their potential applications.

Biodegradable Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Cytosolic Protein Delivery

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a novel class of porous nanomaterials that show great potential for intracellular delivery of protein therapeutics. However, the inherent challenges in interfacing protein with HOFs, and the need for spatiotemporally controlling the release of protein within cells, have constrained their therapeutic potential. In this study, we report novel biodegradable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, termed DS-HOFs, specially designed for the cytosolic delivery of protein therapeutics in cancer cells. The synthesis of DS-HOFs involves the self-assembly of 4-[tris(4-carbamimidoylphenyl) methyl] benzenecarboximidamide (TAM) and 4,4'-dithiobisbenzoic acid (DTBA), governed by intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. DS-HOFs exhibit high efficiency in encapsulating a diverse range of protein cargos, underpinned by the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the protein residue and DS-HOF subcomponents. Notably, DS-HOFs are selectively degraded in cancer cells triggered by the distinct intracellular reductive microenvironments, enabling an enhanced and selective release of protein inside cancer cells. Additionally, we demonstrate that the efficient delivery of bacterial effector protein DUF5 using DS-HOFs depletes the mutant RAS in cancer cells to prohibit tumor cell growth both in vitro and in vivo. The design of biodegradable HOFs for cytosolic protein delivery provides a powerful and promising strategy to expand the therapeutic potential of proteins for cancer therapy.

Pore chemistry and geometry control in a metal azolate framework for one-step ethylene purification from quinary gas mixture

In the petrochemical industry, obtaining polymer-grade ethylene from complex light-hydrocarbon mixtures by one-step separation is important and challenging. Here, we successfully prepared the Metal-Azolate Framework 7 (MAF-7) with pore chemistry and geometry control to realize the one-step separation of ethylene from cracking gas with up to quinary gas mixtures (propane/propylene/ethane/ethylene/acetylene). Based on the tailor-made pore environment, MAF-7 exhibited better selective adsorption of propane, propylene, ethane and acetylene than ethylene, and the adsorption ratios of ethane/ethylene and propylene/ethylene are as high as 1.49 and 2.81, respectively. The pore geometry design of MAF-7 leads to the unique weak binding affinity and adsorption site for ethylene molecules, which is clearly proved by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo theoretical calculations. The breakthrough experiments show that ethylene can be directly obtained from binary, ternary, and quinary gas mixtures. These comprehensive properties show that MAF-7 is expected to achieve one-step purification of ethylene in complex light hydrocarbon mixtures.

Delicate Softness in a Temperature-Responsive Porous Crystal for Accelerated Sieving of Propylene/Propane

Soft nanoporous crystals with structural dynamics are among the most exciting recently discovered materials. However, designing or controlling a porous system with delicate softness that can recognize similar gas pairs, particularly for the promoted ability at increased temperature, remains a challenge. Here, we report a soft crystal (NTU-68) with a one-dimensional (1D) channel that expands and contracts delicately around 4 Å at elevated temperature. The completely different adsorption processes of propane (C3H8: kinetic dominance) and propylene (C3H6: thermodynamic preference) allow the crystal to show a sieving separation of this mixtures (9.9 min·g-1) at 273 K, and the performance increases more than 2-fold (20.4 min·g-1) at 298 K. This phenomenon is contrary to the general observation for adsorption separation: the higher the temperature, the lower the efficiency. Gas-loaded in situ powder X-ray analysis and modeling calculations reveal that slight pore expansion caused by the increased temperature provides plausible nanochannel for adsorption of the relatively smaller C3H6 while maintaining constriction on the larger C3H8. In addition, the separation process remains unaffected by the general impurities, demonstrating its true potential as an alternative sorbent for practical applications. Moving forward, the delicate crystal dynamics and promoted capability for molecular recognition provide a new route for the design of next-generation sieve materials.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework to Upgrade Cycling Stability and Rate Capability of Li-CO2 Batteries

Elaborately designed multifunctional electrocatalysts capable of promoting Li+ and CO2 transport are essential for upgrading the cycling stability and rate capability of Li-CO2 batteries. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with open channels and easily functionalized surfaces hold great potential for applications in efficient cathodes of Li-CO2 batteries. Herein, a robust HOFS (HOF-FJU-1) is introduced for the first time as a co-catalyst in the cathode material of Li-CO2 batteries. HOF-FJU-1 with cyano groups located periodically in the pore can induce homogeneous deposition of discharge products and accommodate volumetric expansion of discharge products during cycling. Besides, HOF-FJU-1 enables effective interaction between Ru0 nanoparticles and cyano groups, thus forming efficient and uniform catalytic sites for CRR/CER. Moreover, HOF-FJU-1 with regularly arranged open channels are beneficial for CO2 and Li+ transport, enabling rapid redox kinetic conversion of CO2 . Therefore, the HOF-based Li-CO2 batteries are capable of stable operation at 400 mA g-1 for 1800 h and maintain a low overpotential of 1.96 V even at high current densities up to 5 A g-1 . This work provides valuable guidance for developing multifunctional HOF-based catalysts to upgrade the longevity and rate capability of Li-CO2 batteries.

Soft Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Constructed Using a Flexible Organic Cage Hinge

Soft porous crystals combine flexibility and porosity, allowing them to respond structurally to external physical and chemical environments. However, striking the right balance between flexibility and sufficient rigidity for porosity is challenging, particularly for molecular crystals formed by using weak intermolecular interactions. Here, we report a flexible oxygen-bridged prismatic organic cage molecule, Cage-6-COOH, which has three pillars that exhibit "hinge-like" rotational motion in the solid state. Cage-6-COOH can form a range of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) where the "hinge" can accommodate a remarkable 67° dihedral angle range between neighboring units. This stems both from flexibility in the noncovalent hydrogen-bonding motifs in the HOFs and the molecular flexibility in the oxygen-linked cage hinge itself. The range of structures for Cage-6-COOH includes two topologically complex interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β. CageHOF-2α is nonporous, while CageHOF-2β has permanent porosity and a surface area of 458 m2 g-1. The flexibility of Cage-6-COOH allows this molecule to rapidly transform from a low-crystallinity solid into the two crystalline interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β, under mild conditions simply by using acetonitrile or ethanol vapor, respectively. This self-healing behavior was selective, with the CageHOF-2β structure exhibiting structural memory behavior.

A Nitro-Modified Luminescent Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Non-Contact and High-Contrast Sensing of Aromatic Amines

The global demand for intelligent sensing of aromatic amines has consistently increased due to concerns about health and the environment. Efforts to improve material design and understand mechanisms have been made, but highly efficient non-contact sensing with host-guest structures remains a challenge. Herein, we report the first example of non-contact, high-contrast sensing of aromatic amines in a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) based on a nitro-modified stereo building block. Direct observation of binding interactions of trapped amines is achieved, leading to charge separation-induced emission quenching between host and guests. Non-contact sensing of aniline and diphenylamine is realized with quenching efficiencies up to 91.7 % and 97.0 %, which shows potential for versatile applications. This work provides an inspiring avenue to engineer multifunctional HOFs via co-crystal preparations, thus enriching applications of porous materials with explicit mechanisms.

Dynamic and transformable Cu12 cluster-based C-H···π-stacked porous supramolecular frameworks

The assembly of cluster-based π-stacked porous supramolecular frameworks presents daunting challenges, including the design of suitable cluster building units, control of the sufficient C-H···π interactions, trade-off between structural dynamics and stability as well as understanding the resulting collective properties. Herein, we report a cluster-based C-H···π interaction-stacked porous supramolecular framework, namely, Cu12a-π, consisting of Cu12 nanocluster as a 6-connected node, which is further propagated to a dynamic porous supramolecular frameworks via dense intralayer C-H···π interactions, yielding permanent porosity. In addition, Cu12a-π can be transformed into cluster-based nonporous adaptive crystals (Cu12b-NACs) via ligand-exchange following a dissociation-reassembly mechanism. Moreover, Cu12a-π can efficiently remove 97.2% of iodine from saturated iodine aqueous solutions with a high uptake capacity of 2.96 g·g-1. These prospective results positioned at cluster-based porous supramolecular framework and enlighten follow-up researchers to design and synthesize such materials with better performance.

In Situ-Generated Heat-Resistant Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Remarkably Improving Both Flame Retardancy and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Composites

In this study, the heat-resistant hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) material HOF-FJU-1 was synthesized via in situ generation and then used as flame retardants (FRs) to improve the flame retardancy of epoxy resin (EP). HOF-FJU-1 can maintain high crystallinity at 450 °C and thus function as a flame retardant in EP. The study found that HOF-FJU-1 facilitates the improvement of char formation in EP, thus inhibiting heat transfer and smoke release during combustion. For EP/HOF-FJU-1 composites, the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 can remarkably improve both the mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of EP. Furthermore, the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 has better fire safety than the ex situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 at the same filling content. Thermal degradation products and flame retardation mechanisms in the gas and condensed phases were further investigated. This work demonstrates that the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 is promising to be an excellent flame-retardant candidate.

Kilogram-Scale Fabrication of a Robust Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Framework for Separating Ethylene from a Ternary C2 Hydrocarbon Mixture

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

Flexible Luminescent Hydrogen-bonded Organic Framework for the Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane

A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture with a low purity of 79.6%. Interestingly, PTTCN molecules with eq form and benzene co-assembled to construct a hydrogen-bonded framework (X-HOF-4) with S-type solvent channels and yellow-green fluorescence, and can release benzene to form nonporous guest-free crystal under heating. Such nonporous crystals strongly favor aromatic benzene over cyclohexane and may selectively reabsorb benzene from benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture to recover original framework, and the purity of benzene can reach ≈96.5% after release from framework. Moreover, reversible transformation between the nonporous crystals and the guest-containing crystals allows the material to be reused.
