All-optical switching of magnetization in atomically thin CrI3

Optical-Helicity-Dependent Orbital and Spin Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets

Disentangling orbital (OAM) and spin (SAM) angular momenta in the ultrafast spin dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets on subfemtoseconds is a challenge in the field of ultrafast magnetism. Herein, we employed a non-collinear spin version of real-time time-dependent density functional theory to investigate the orbital and spin dynamics of the 2D ferromagnets Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) induced by circularly polarized light. Our results show that the demagnetization of the Fe sublattice in FGT is accompanied by helicity-dependent precession of the OAM and SAM excited by circularly polarized lasers. We further identify that precession of the OAM and SAM in FGT is faster than demagnetization within a few femtoseconds. Remarkably, circularly polarized lasers can significantly induce a periodic transverse linear response of the OAM and SAM on very ultrafast time scales of ∼600 attoseconds. Our finding suggests a powerful new route for attosecond regimes of the angular momentum manipulation to coherently control helicity-dependent orbital and spin dynamics in 2D ferromagnets.

Nonreciprocal and Nonvolatile Electric-Field Switching of Magnetism in van der Waals Heterostructure Multiferroics

Multiferroic materials provide robust and efficient routes for the control of magnetism by electric fields, which have been diligently sought after for a long time. Construction of two-dimensional (2D) vdW multiferroics is a more exciting endeavor. To date, the nonvolatile manipulation of magnetism through ferroelectric polarization still remains challenging in a 2D vdW heterostructure multiferroic. Here, we report a van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure multiferroic comprising the atomically thin layered antiferromagnet (AFM) CrI3 and ferroelectric (FE) α-In2Se3. We demonstrate anomalously nonreciprocal and nonvolatile electric-field control of magnetization by ferroelectric polarization. The nonreciprocal electric control originates from an intriguing antisymmetric enhancement of interlayer ferromagnetic coupling in the opposite ferroelectric polarization configurations of α-In2Se3. Our work provides numerous possibilities for creating diverse heterostructure multiferroics at the limit of a few atomic layers for multistage magnetic memories and brain-inspired in-memory computing.

All-optical control of skyrmion configuration in CrI 3 monolayer

The potential for manipulating characteristics of skyrmions in a CrI3 monolayer using circularly polarised light is explored. The effective skyrmion-light interaction is mediated by bright excitons whose magnetization is selectively influenced by the polarization of photons. The light-induced skyrmion dynamics is illustrated by the dependencies of the skyrmion size and the skyrmion lifetime on the intensity and polarization of the incident light pulse. Two-dimensional magnets hosting excitons thus represent a promising platform for the control of topological magnetic structures by light.

Tunneling current-controlled spin states in few-layer van der Waals magnets

Effective control of magnetic phases in two-dimensional magnets would constitute crucial progress in spintronics, holding great potential for future computing technologies. Here, we report a new approach of leveraging tunneling current as a tool for controlling spin states in CrI3. We reveal that a tunneling current can deterministically switch between spin-parallel and spin-antiparallel states in few-layer CrI3, depending on the polarity and amplitude of the current. We propose a mechanism involving nonequilibrium spin accumulation in the graphene electrodes in contact with the CrI3 layers. We further demonstrate tunneling current-tunable stochastic switching between multiple spin states of the CrI3 tunnel devices, which goes beyond conventional bi-stable stochastic magnetic tunnel junctions and has not been documented in two-dimensional magnets. Our findings not only address the existing knowledge gap concerning the influence of tunneling currents in controlling the magnetism in two-dimensional magnets, but also unlock possibilities for energy-efficient probabilistic and neuromorphic computing.

Layer-Number-Dependent Magnetism in the Co-Doped van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2

Recently, van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets have been proposed to be crucial for spintronics due to their favorable properties compared to ferromagnets, including robustness against magnetic perturbation and high frequencies of spin dynamics. High-performance and energy-efficient spin functionalities often depend on the current-driven manipulation and detection of spin states, highlighting the significance of two-dimensional metallic antiferromagnets, which have not been much explored due to the lack of suitable materials. Here, we report a new metallic vdW antiferromagnet obtained from the ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 by cobalt (Co) doping. Through the layer-number-dependent Hall resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, an evident odd-even layer-number effect has been observed in its few-layered flakes, suggesting that it could host an A-type antiferromagnetic structure. This peculiar layer-number-dependent magnetism in Co-doped Fe3GaTe2 helps unravel the complex magnetic structures in such doped vdW magnets, and our finding will enrich material candidates and spin functionalities for spintronic applications.

Three-stage ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in a monolayer ferromagnet

Intense laser pulses can be used to demagnetize a magnetic material on an extremely short timescale. While this ultrafast demagnetization offers the potential for new magneto-optical devices, it poses challenges in capturing coupled spin-electron and spin-lattice dynamics. In this article, we study the photoinduced ultrafast demagnetization of a prototype monolayer ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 and resolve the three-stage demagnetization process characterized by an ultrafast and substantial demagnetization on a timescale of 100 fs, followed by light-induced coherent A1g phonon dynamics which is strongly coupled to the spin dynamics in the next 200-800 fs. In the third stage, chiral lattice vibrations driven by nonlinear phonon couplings, both in-plane and out-of-plane are produced, resulting in significant spin precession. Nonadiabatic effects are found to introduce considerable phonon hardening and suppress the spin-lattice couplings during demagnetization. Our results advance our understanding of dynamic charge-spin-lattice couplings in the ultrafast demagnetization and evidence angular momentum transfer between the phonon and spin degrees of freedom.

Reversible non-volatile electronic switching in a near-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet

Non-volatile phase-change memory devices utilize local heating to toggle between crystalline and amorphous states with distinct electrical properties. Expanding on this kind of switching to two topologically distinct phases requires controlled non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here, we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely related crystal structures, with remarkably distinct electronic structures, in the near-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5-δGeTe2. We show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of Fe site vacancies that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases, which can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. The two phases are distinguished by the presence of topological nodal lines due to the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite lattice, and broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase.

Perspectives: Light Control of Magnetism and Device Development

Accurately controlling magnetic and spin states presents a significant challenge in spintronics, especially as demands for higher data storage density and increased processing speeds grow. Approaches such as light control are gradually supplanting traditional magnetic field methods. Traditionally, the modulation of magnetism was predominantly achieved through polarized light with the help of ultrafast light technologies. With the growing demand for energy efficiency and multifunctionality in spintronic devices, integrating photovoltaic materials into magnetoelectric systems has introduced more physical effects. This development suggests that sunlight will play an increasingly pivotal role in manipulating spin orientation in the future. This review introduces and concludes the influence of various light types on magnetism, exploring mechanisms such as magneto-optical (MO) effects, light-induced magnetic phase transitions, and spin photovoltaic effects. This review briefly summarizes recent advancements in the light control of magnetism, especially sunlight, and their potential applications, providing an optimistic perspective on future research directions in this area.

All-optical ultrafast polarization switching with nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces

Optical switching has important applications in optical information processing, optical computing, and optical communications. The long-term pursuit of optical switch is to achieve short switching time and large modulation depth. Among various mechanisms, all-optical switching based on Kerr effect represents a promising solution. However, it is usually difficult to compromise both switching time and modulation depth of a Kerr-type optical switch. To circumvent this constraint, symmetry selective polarization switching via second-harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear crystals has been attracting scientists' attention. Here, we demonstrate SHG-based all-optical ultrafast polarization switching by using geometric phase controlled nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces. A switching time of hundreds of femtoseconds and a modulation depth of 97% were experimentally demonstrated. The function of dual-channel all-optical switching was also demonstrated on a metasurface, which consists of spatially variant meta-atoms. The nonlinear metasurface proposed here represents an important platform for developing all-optical ultrafast switches and would benefit the area of optical information processing.

Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: Making Atomic-Level Magnetism Tunable with Light at Room Temperature

The capacity to manipulate magnetization in 2D dilute magnetic semiconductors (2D-DMSs) using light, specifically in magnetically doped transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers (M-doped TX2 , where M = V, Fe, and Cr; T = W, Mo; X = S, Se, and Te), may lead to innovative applications in spintronics, spin-caloritronics, valleytronics, and quantum computation. This Perspective paper explores the mediation of magnetization by light under ambient conditions in 2D-TMD DMSs and heterostructures. By combining magneto-LC resonance (MLCR) experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that the magnetization can be enhanced using light in V-doped TMD monolayers (e.g., V-WS2 , V-WSe2 ). This phenomenon is attributed to excess holes in the conduction and valence bands, and carriers trapped in magnetic doping states, mediating the magnetization of the semiconducting layer. In 2D-TMD heterostructures (VSe2 /WS2 , VSe2 /MoS2 ), the significance of proximity, charge-transfer, and confinement effects in amplifying light-mediated magnetism is demonstrated. We attributed this to photon absorption at the TMD layer that generates electron-hole pairs mediating the magnetization of the heterostructure. These findings will encourage further research in the field of 2D magnetism and establish a novel design of 2D-TMDs and heterostructures with optically tunable magnetic functionalities, paving the way for next-generation magneto-optic nanodevices.

Glovebox-assisted magnetic force microscope for studying air-sensitive samples in a cryogen-free magnet

Most known two-dimensional magnets exhibit a high sensitivity to air, making direct characterization of their domain textures technically challenging. Herein, we report on the construction and performance of a glovebox-assisted magnetic force microscope (MFM) operating in a cryogen-free magnet, realizing imaging of the intrinsic magnetic structure of water and oxygen-sensitive materials. It features a compact tubular probe for a 50 mm-diameter variable temperature insert installed in a 12 T cryogen-free magnet. A detachable sealing chamber can be electrically connected to the tail of the probe, and its pump port can be opened and closed by a vacuum manipulator located on the top of the probe. This sealing chamber enables sample loading and positioning in the glove box and MFM transfer to the magnet maintained in an inert gas atmosphere (in this case, argon and helium gas). The performance of the MFM is demonstrated by directly imaging the surface (using no buffer layer, such as h-BN) of very air-sensitive van der Waals magnetic material chromium triiodide (CrI3) samples at low temperatures as low as 5 K and high magnetic fields up to 11.9 T. The system's adaptability permits replacing the MFM unit with a scanning tunneling microscope unit, enabling high-resolution atomic imaging of air-sensitive surface samples.

Terahertz Laser Pulse Boosts Interlayer Spin Transfer in Two-Dimensional van der Waals Magnetic Heterostructures

Light-induced ultrafast dynamics in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems demonstrate substantial advancements in spintronics. Here, using the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT), we applied laser pulses with various frequencies, from terahertz (THz) to optical pulse, to systematically study the interlayer spin transfer dynamics in 2D van der Waals nonmagnetic-ferromagnetic heterostructures, including graphene-Fe3GeTe2 (Gr/FGT) and silicene-Fe3GeTe2 (Si/FGT). Our results demonstrate that low-frequency THz pulses are particularly effective in facilitating interlayer spin injection from the ferromagnetic FGT layers to the Si or Gr layers. On the contrary, high-frequency optical pulses exhibit a minimal influence on this process. Such an effect is attributed to the low-frequency THz pulses inducing in-phase oscillations of the electron charge density around atomic centers, leading to a highly efficient interlayer spin transfer. Our results provide a new insight into ultrafast THz radiation control intralayer spin transfer and magnetic proximity dynamics in the 2D limit.

Neuromorphic Photonics Circuits: Contemporary Review

Neuromorphic photonics is a cutting-edge fusion of neuroscience-inspired computing and photonics technology to overcome the constraints of conventional computing architectures. Its significance lies in the potential to transform information processing by mimicking the parallelism and efficiency of the human brain. Using optics and photonics principles, neuromorphic devices can execute intricate computations swiftly and with impressive energy efficiency. This innovation holds promise for advancing artificial intelligence and machine learning while addressing the limitations of traditional silicon-based computing. Neuromorphic photonics could herald a new era of computing that is more potent and draws inspiration from cognitive processes, leading to advancements in robotics, pattern recognition, and advanced data processing. This paper reviews the recent developments in neuromorphic photonic integrated circuits, applications, and current challenges.

Transient Non-Collinear Magnetic State for All-Optical Magnetization Switching

Resonant absorption of a photon by bound electrons in a solid can promote an electron to another orbital state or transfer it to a neighboring atomic site. Such a transition in a magnetically ordered material could affect the magnetic order. While this process is an obvious road map for optical control of magnetization, experimental demonstration of such a process remains challenging. Exciting a significant fraction of magnetic ions requires a very intense incoming light beam, as orbital resonances are often weak compared to above-band-gap excitations. In the latter case, a sizeable reduction of the magnetization occurs as the absorbed energy increases the spin temperature, masking the non-thermal optical effects. Here, using ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy, this work is able to resolve changes in the magnetization state induced by resonant absorption of infrared photons in Co-doped yttrium iron garnet, with negligible thermal effects. This work finds that the optical excitation of the Co ions affects the two distinct magnetic Fe sublattices differently, resulting in a transient non-collinear magnetic state. The present results indicate that the all-optical magnetization switching (AOS) most likely occurs due to the creation of a transient, non-collinear magnetic state followed by coherent spin rotations of the Fe moments.

Real-time observation of magnetization and magnon dynamics in a two-dimensional topological antiferromagnet MnBi2Te4

Atomically thin van der Waals magnetic materials have not only provided a fertile playground to explore basic physics in the two-dimensional (2D) limit but also created vast opportunities for novel ultrafast functional devices. Here we systematically investigate ultrafast magnetization dynamics and spin wave dynamics in few-layer topological antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 crystals as a function of layer number, temperature, and magnetic field. We find laser-induced (de)magnetization processes can be used to accurately track the distinct magnetic states in different magnetic field regimes, including showing clear odd-even layer number effects. In addition, strongly field-dependent AFM magnon modes with tens of gigahertz frequencies are optically generated and directly observed in the time domain. Remarkably, we find that magnetization and magnon dynamics can be observed in not only the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect but also the time resolved reflectivity, indicating strong correlation between the magnetic state and electronic structure. These measurements present the first comprehensive overview of ultrafast spin dynamics in this novel 2D antiferromagnet, paving the way for potential applications in 2D antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics as well as further studies of ultrafast control of both magnetization and topological quantum states.

Crystallization of polarons through charge and spin ordering transitions in 1T-TaS2

The interaction of electrons with the lattice in metals can lead to reduction of their kinetic energy to the point where they may form heavy, dressed quasiparticles-polarons. Unfortunately, polaronic lattice distortions are difficult to distinguish from more conventional charge- and spin-ordering phenomena at low temperatures. Here we present a study of local symmetry breaking of the lattice structure on the picosecond timescale in the prototype layered dichalcogenide Mott insulator 1T-TaS2 using X-ray pair-distribution function measurements. We clearly identify symmetry-breaking polaronic lattice distortions at temperatures well above the ordered phases, and record the evolution of broken symmetry states from 915 K to 15 K. The data imply that charge ordering is driven by polaron crystallization into a Wigner crystal-like state, rather than Fermi surface nesting or conventional electron-phonon coupling. At intermediate temperatures the local lattice distortions are found to be consistent with a quantum spin liquid state.

Lightning the Spin: Harnessing the Potential of 2D Magnets in Opto-Spintronics

Since the emergence of 2D magnets in 2017, the diversity of these materials has greatly expanded. Their 2D nature (atomic-scale thickness) endows these magnets with strong magnetic anisotropy, layer-dependent and switchable magnetic order, and quantum-confined quasiparticles, which distinguish them from conventional 3D magnetic materials. Moreover, the 2D geometry facilitates light incidence for opto-spintronic applications and potential on-chip integration. In analogy to optoelectronics based on optical-electronic interactions, opto-spintronics use light-spin interactions to process spin information stored in the solid state. In this review, opto-spintronics is divided into three types with respect to the wavelengths of radiation interacting with 2D magnets: 1) GHz (microwave) to THz (mid-infrared), 2) visible, and 3) UV to X-rays. It is focused on the recent research advancements on the newly discovered mechanisms of light-spin interactions in 2D magnets and introduces the potential design of novel opto-spintronic applications based on these interactions.

Recent advances in 2D van der Waals magnets: Detection, modulation, and applications

The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnets provides an exciting platform for exploring magnetism in the monolayer limit. Exotic quantum phenomena and significant potential for spintronic applications are demonstrated in 2D magnetic crystals and heterostructures, which offer unprecedented possibilities in advanced formation technology with low power and high efficiency. In this review, we summarize recent advances in 2D van der Waals magnetic crystals. We focus mainly on van der Waals materials of truly 2D nature with intrinsic magnetism. The detection methods of 2D magnetic materials are first introduced in detail. Subsequently, the effective strategies to modulate the magnetic behavior of 2D magnets (e.g., Curie temperature, magnetic anisotropy, magnetic exchange interaction) are presented. Then, we list the applications of 2D magnets in the spintronic devices. We also highlight current challenges and broad space for the development of 2D magnets in further studies.

Ultrafast Laser Pulse Induced Transient Ferrimagnetic State and Spin Relaxation Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

We employ real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) and ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) to systematically investigate the ultrafast laser pulses induced spin transfer and relaxation dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) MnPS3/MnSe2 van der Waals heterostructures. We demonstrate that laser pulses can induce a ferrimagnetic (FiM) state in the AFM MnPS3 layer within tens of femtoseconds and maintain it for subpicosecond time scale before reverting to the AFM state. We identify the mechanism in which the asymmetric optical intersite spin transfer (OISTR) effect occurring within the sublattices of the AFM and FM layers drives the interlayer spin-selective charge transfer, leading to the transition from AFM to FiM state. Furthermore, the unequal electron-phonon coupling of spin-up and spin-down channels of AFM spin sublattice causes an inequivalent spin relaxation, in turn extending the time scale of the FiM state. These findings are essential for designing novel optical-driven ultrafast 2D magnetic switches.

Self-Assembled Complex Three-Phase Core-Shell Nanostructure of Au-CoFe2-TiN with a Magneto-Optical Coupling Effect

Nanostructured plasmonic-magnetic metamaterials have gained great research interest due to their enhanced magneto-optical coupling effects. Here, we report a complex three-phase nanocomposite design combining ferromagnetic CoFe2 with plasmonic TiN and Au as a multifunctional hybrid metamaterial using either a cogrowth or a templated method. Via the first method of cogrowing three phases, three different morphologies of Au-CoFe2 core-shell nanopillars were formed in the TiN matrix. Via the second method of sequential deposition of a TiN-Au seed layer and a TiN-CoFe2 layer, highly ordered and uniform single-type core-shell nanopillars (i.e., the CoFe2 shell with a Au core) form in the TiN matrix. Both cogrowth and templated growth TiN-CoFe2-Au hybrid systems exhibit excellent epitaxial quality, hyperbolic dispersion, magnetic anisotropy, and a magneto-optical coupling effect. This study provides an effective approach for achieving highly uniform multiphase vertically aligned nanocomposite structures with well-integrated optical, magnetic, and coupling properties.

Creating multiple ultra-long longitudinal magnetization textures by strongly focusing azimuthally polarized circular Airy vortex beams

We come up with a simple feasible scheme for the creation of multiple ultra-long longitudinal magnetization textures. This is realized by directly strongly focusing azimuthally polarized circular Airy vortex beams onto an isotropic magneto-optical medium based on the vectorial diffraction theory and the inverse Faraday effect. It is found that, by jointly tuning the intrinsic parameters (i. e. the radius of main ring, the scaling factor, and the exponential decay factor) of the incoming Airy beams and the topological charges of the optical vortices, we are able to garner not only super-resolved scalable magnetization needles as usual, but also steerable magnetization oscillations and nested magnetization tubes with opposite polarities for the first time. These exotic magnetic behaviors depend on the extended interplay between the polarization singularity of multi-ring structured vectorial light fields and the additional vortex phase. The findings demonstrated are of great interest in opto-magnetism and emerging classical or quantum opto-magnetic applications.
