Stereochemical expression of ns2 electron pairs in metal halide perovskites

Evidence of Lone Pair Crafted Emphanisis in the Ruddlesden-Popper Halide Perovskite Cs2PbI2Cl2

A hallmark of typical structural transformations is an increase in symmetry upon heating due to entropic favourability. However, local symmetry breaking upon warming is recently evidenced in rare crystalline phases. Termed as emphanisis, the phenomenon implores exploration of fascinating thermodynamic nuances that drive unusual structural evolutions. Here, synchrotron X-ray total scattering measurements are presented on a Ruddlesden-Popper mixed halide perovskite, Cs2PbI2Cl2, which reveal signatures of emphanisis. The genesis of symmetry lowering upon heating is traced to a lone pair-driven cooperative local structural distortion composed of thermally actuated Pb off-centring and static Cl displacement. Mapping the thermal evolution of low-lying phonon modes with inelastic neutron scattering uncovers instances of mode hardening with picosecond lifetime and an intriguing soft mode at the X-point of the Brillouin zone-features conducive to ultralow thermal transport. Together, these observations highlight the fundamental and functional implications of chemical design in engendering unconventional phenomena in crystalline materials and associated properties.

Quantifying Structural Polarization by Continuous Regulation of Lone-Pair Electron Expression in Molecular Crystals

Rational design of structural polarization is vital for modern technologies, as it allows the physical properties of functional materials to be tailored. An effective approach for governing polarization involves the utilization of stereochemical lone-pair electrons (LPEs). However, despite the recognized significance of LPEs in controlling structural polarization, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the quantitative relationship between their expression and the extent of structural polarization. Here, by using pressure to continuously tune the LPE expression, we achieve the precise control and quantification of structural polarization, which brings enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) of the molecular crystal SbI3·3S8. We introduce the I-Sb-I angle (α̅) that describes the degree of LPE expression and establishes a quantitative relationship between α̅ and structural polarization. That is, decreasing α̅ shapes LPE expression from delocalization to localization, which repels the bonding pairs of electrons and thus enhances the structural polarization. In addition, we extend this quantified relationship to a series of molecular crystals and demonstrate its applicability to the design of structural polarization by tailoring LPE expression.

Synchronized crystallization in tin-lead perovskite solar cells

Tin-lead halide perovskites with a bandgap near 1.2 electron-volt hold great promise for thin-film photovoltaics. However, the film quality of solution-processed Sn-Pb perovskites is compromised by the asynchronous crystallization behavior between Sn and Pb components, where the crystallization of Sn-based perovskites tends to occur faster than that of Pb. Here we show that the rapid crystallization of Sn is rooted in its stereochemically active lone pair, which impedes coordination between the metal ion and Lewis base ligands in the perovskite precursor. From this perspective, we introduce a noncovalent binding agent targeting the open metal site of coordinatively unsaturated Sn(II) solvates, thereby synchronizing crystallization kinetics and homogenizing Sn-Pb alloying. The resultant single-junction Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells achieve a certified power conversion efficiency of 24.13 per cent. The encapsulated device retains 90 per cent of the initial efficiency after 795 h of maximum power point operation under simulated one-sun illumination.

A Lead-Free Ferroelectric 2D Dion-Jacobson Tin Iodide Perovskite

2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites emerge as a new class of 2D semiconductors with the potential to combine excellent optoelectronic properties with symmetry-enabled properties such as ferroelectricity. Although many lead-based ferroelectric 2D halide perovskites are reported, there is yet to be a conclusive report of ferroelectricity in tin-based 2D perovskites. Here, the structures and properties of a new series of 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) Sn perovskites: (4AMP)SnI4, (4AMP)(MA)Sn2I7, and (4AMP)(FA)Sn2I7 (4AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium, MA = methylammonium, and FA = formamidinium), are reported. Structural characterization reveals that (4AMP)SnI4 is polar with in-plane spontaneous polarization whereas (4AMP)(MA)Sn2I7 and (4AMP)(FA)Sn2I7 are centrosymmetric. Further, (4AMP)SnI4 displays second harmonic generation (SHG) and polarization-electric field hysteresis measurements confirm it is ferroelectric with a spontaneous polarization of 10.0 µC cm-2 at room temperature. (4AMP)SnI4 transitions into a centrosymmetric structure above 367 K. As the first direct experimental observation of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of a Sn-based 2D hybrid perovskite, this work opens up environmentally friendly 2D tin halide perovskites for ferroelectricity and other physical property studies.

2D Hybrid Perovskites: From Static and Dynamic Structures to Potential Applications

2D perovskites have received great attention recently due to their structural tunability and environmental stability, making them highly promising candidates for various applications by breaking property bottlenecks that affect established materials. However, in 2D perovskites, the complicated interplay between organic spacers and inorganic slabs makes structural analysis challenging to interpret. A deeper understanding of the structure-property relationship in these systems is urgently needed to enable high-performance tunable optoelectronic devices. Herein, this study examines how structural changes, from constant lattice distortion and variable structural evolution, modeled with both static and dynamic structural descriptors, affect macroscopic properties and ultimately device performance. The effect of chemical composition, crystallographic inhomogeneity, and mechanical-stress-induced static structural changes and corresponding electronic band variations is reported. In addition, the structure dynamics are described from the viewpoint of anharmonic vibrations, which impact electron-phonon coupling and the carriers' dynamic processes. Correlated carrier-matter interactions, known as polarons and acting on fine electronic structures, are then discussed. Finally, reliable guidelines to facilitate design to exploit structural features and rationally achieve breakthroughs in 2D perovskite applications are proposed. This review provides a global structural landscape of 2D perovskites, expected to promote the prosperity of these materials in emerging device applications.

Structure-Guided Approaches for Enhanced Spin-Splitting in Chiral Perovskite

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites with diverse lattice structures and chemical composition provide an ideal material platform for novel functionalization, including chirality transfer. Chiral perovskites combine organic and inorganic sublattices, therefore encoding the structural asymmetry into the electronic structures and giving rise to the spin-splitting effect. From a structural chemistry perspective, the magnitude of the spin-splitting effect crucially depends on the noncovalent and electrostatic interaction within the chiral perovskite, which induces the local site and long-range bulk inversion symmetry breaking. In this regard, we systematically retrospect the structure-property relationships in chiral perovskite. Insight into the rational design of chiral perovskites based on molecular configuration, dimensionality, and chemical composition along with their effects on spin-splitting manifestation is presented. Lastly, challenges in purposeful material design and further integration into chiral perovskite-based spintronic devices are outlined. With an understanding of fundamental chemistry and physics, we believe that this Perspective will propel the application of multifunctional spintronic devices.

Two-dimensional lead halide perovskite lateral homojunctions enabled by phase pinning

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites possess diverse structural polymorphs with versatile physical properties, which can be controlled by order-disorder transition of the spacer cation, making them attractive for constructing semiconductor homojunctions. Here, we demonstrate a space-cation-dopant-induced phase stabilization approach to creating a lateral homojunction composed of ordered and disordered phases within a two-dimensional perovskite. By doping a small quantity of pentylammonium into (butylammonium)2PbI4 or vice versa, we effectively suppress the ordering transition of the spacer cation and the associated out-of-plane octahedral tilting in the inorganic framework, resulting in phase pining of the disordered phase when decreasing temperature or increasing pressure. This enables epitaxial growth of a two-dimensional perovskite homojunction with tunable optical properties under temperature and pressure stimuli, as well as directional exciton diffusion across the interface. Our results demonstrate a previously unexplored strategy for constructing two-dimensional perovskite heterostructures by thermodynamic tuning and spacer cation doping.

Exciton engineering of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites by synergistically tuning the intra and interlayer structures

Designing two-dimensional halide perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic applications requires deep understanding of the structure-property relationship that governs their excitonic behaviors. However, a design framework that considers both intra and interlayer structures modified by the A-site and spacer cations, respectively, has not been developed. Here, we use pressure to synergistically tune the intra and interlayer structures and uncover the structural modulations that result in improved optoelectronic performance. Under applied pressure, (BA)2(GA)Pb2I7 exhibits a 72-fold boost of photoluminescence and 10-fold increase of photoconductivity. Based on the observed structural change, we introduce a structural descriptor χ that describes both the intra and interlayer characteristics and establish a general quantitative relationship between χ and photoluminescence quantum yield: smaller χ correlates with minimized trapped excitons and more efficient emission from free excitons. Building on this principle, we design a perovskite (CMA)2(FA)Pb2I7 that exhibits a small χ and an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 59.3%.

Ferroics in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites: Fundamentals, Design Strategies, and Implementation

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) afford highly versatile structure design and lattice dimensionalities; thus, they are actively researched as material platforms for the tailoring of ferroic behaviors. Unlike single-phase organic or inorganic materials, the interlayer coupling between organic and inorganic components in HOIPs allows the modification of strain and symmetry by chirality transfer or lattice distortion, thereby enabling the coexistence of ferroic orders. This review focuses on the principles for engineering one or multiple ferroic orders in HOIPs, and the conditions for achieving multiferroicity and magnetoelectric properties. The prospects of multilevel ferroic modulation, chiral spin textures, and spin orbitronics in HOIPs are also presented.

Unique Perovskitizer N─Pb Bond Switching Induced Polar Photovoltaic Effect in Trilayered Hybrid Perovskite

Polar photovoltaic effect (PPE) has attracted great attention in regulating desired optoelectronic properties, which can be driven by order-disorder and displacive phase transitions. Bond-switching is also a feasible method to induce PPE, but such investigation is very rare. Lead-halide hybrid perovskite (LHHP) is an outstanding photodetection material; lead atoms possess rich coordination modes to provide possibilities to construct switchable bonds. Here, a unique perovskitizer N─Pb bond-switching is disclosed to induce polar photovoltage in the emerging LHHP, PA2MHy2Pb3Br10 (1, PA = n-propylamine, MHy = methylhydrazine). Interestingly, the perovskitizer MHy+ provides 2s2 lone pair while the Pb atom affords empty d orbitals, which coordinate with each other to generate a flexible N─Pb bond. Further, the introduction of N─Pb bonds results in a high distortion of the PbBr6 octahedron to form local polarity and further orientation to induce spontaneous polarization. More importantly, such a flexible N─Pb bond switching mechanism drives a notable PPE and controllable polarized photo-response, a polarization ratio up to 9.7 at the polar phase in striking contrast with the non-polar phase (1.03). The work provides the first demonstration of bond-switching to induce polar phase transition and polar photovoltage in the photoconductive hybrid perovskites for photoelectric applications.

Large Enhancement of Polarization in a Layered Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric Semiconductor via Molecular Engineering

Switchable spontaneous polarization is the vital property of ferroelectrics, which leads to other key physical properties such as piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and nonlinear optical effects, etc. Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with 2D layered structure have become an emerging branch of ferroelectric materials. However, most of the 2D hybrid ferroelectrics own relatively low polarizations (<15 µC cm-2 ). Here, a strategy to enhance the polarization of these hybrid perovskites by using ortho-, meta-, para-halogen substitution is developed. Based on (benzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (BZACL), the para-chlorine substituted (4-chlorobenzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (4-CBZACL) ferroelectric semiconductor shows a large spontaneous polarization (23.3 µC cm-2 ), which is 79% larger than the polarization of BZACL. This large enhancement of polarization is successfully explained via ab initio calculations. The study provides a convenient and efficient strategy to promote the ferroelectric property in the hybrid perovskite family.

Tuning Structure and Excitonic Properties of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Germanium, Tin, and Lead Iodide Perovskites via Interplay between Cations

The compositional tunability of 2D metal halide perovskites enables exploration of diverse semiconducting materials with different structural features. However, rationally tuning the 2D perovskite structures to target physical properties for specific applications remains challenging, especially for lead-free perovskites. Here, we study the effect of the interplay of the B-site (Ge, Sn, and Pb), A-site (cesium, methylammonium, and formamidinium), and spacer cations on the structure and optical properties of a new series of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites using the previously unreported spacer cation 4-bromo-2-fluorobenzylammonium (4Br2FBZ). We report eight new crystal structures and study the consequence of varying the B-site (Pb, Sn, Ge) and dimension (n = 1, 2, vs 3D). Dimension strongly influences local distortion and structural symmetry, and the increased octahedral tilting and lone pair effects in Ge perovskites lead to a polar n = 2 perovskite that exhibits second harmonic generation, (4Br2FBZ)2(Cs)Ge2I7. In contrast, the analogous Sn and Pb perovskites remain centrosymmetric, but the B-site metal influences the photoluminescence properties. The Pb perovskites exhibit broad, defect-mediated emission at low temperature, whereas the Sn perovskites show purely excitonic emission over the entire temperature range, but the carrier recombination dynamics depend on dimensionality and dark excitonic states. Wholistic understanding of these differences that arise based on cations and dimensionality can guide the rational materials design of 2D perovskites for targeting physical properties for optoelectronic applications based on the interplay of cations and the connectivity of the inorganic framework.

Zero-Dimensional Tellurium-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Halide Single Crystal with Yellow-Orange Emission from Self-Trapped Excitons

Organic-inorganic hybrid halides and their analogs that exhibit efficient broadband emission from self-trapped excitons (STEs) offers an unique pathway towards realization of highly efficient white light sources for lighting applications. An appropriate dilution of ns2 ions into a halide host is essential to produce auxiliary emissions. However, the realization of ns2 cation-based halides phosphor that can be excited by blue light-emitting diode (LED) is still rarely reported. In this study, a zero-dimensional Te-based single crystal (C8H20N)2TeCl6 was synthesized, which exhibits a yellow-orange emission centered at 600 nm with a full width at half maximum of 130 nm upon excitation under 437 nm. Intense electron-phonon coupling was confirmed in the (C8H20N)2TeCl6 single crystal and the light emitting mechanism is comprehensively discussed. The results of this study are pertinent to the emissive mechanism of Te-based hybrid halides and can facilitate discovery of unidentified metal halides with broadband excitation features.

Broadband Emission Origin in Metal Halide Perovskites: Are Self-Trapped Excitons or Ions?

It has always been a goal to realize high efficiency and broadband emission in single-component materials. The appearance of metal halide perovskites makes it possible. Their soft lattice characteristics and significant electron-phonon coupling synergistically generate self-trapped excitons (STEs), contributing to a broadband emission with a large Stokes shift. Meanwhile, their structural/compositional diversity provides suitable active sites and coordination environments for doping of ns2 ions, allowing 3 Pn ( n =0,1,2) →1 S0 transitions toward broadband emission. The ns2 ions emission is phenomenologically similar to that of STE emission, hindering in-depth understanding of their emission origin, and leading to failure to meet the design requirements for practical applications. In this scenario, herein, the fundamentals and development of such two emission mechanisms are summarized to establish a clear and comprehensive understanding of the broadband emission phenomenon, which may pave the way to an ideal customization of broadband-emission metal halide perovskites.

Oxidation-Induced Dissolution Recrystallization Structural Transformation Strategy Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Effect of Hybrid Chiral Tin Bromide Single Crystals

In order to reveal the integrated effect of inorganic lattice structure disturbances and chiral ligands on the structure of tin halide hybrid materials, we show the synthesis, crystal growth, dissolution recrystallization structural transformation (DRST), optical properties, energy band structure, and nonlinear optical properties of a class of chiral tin bromide R/S-2-mpip[SnBr3]Br (2-mpip is 2-methylpiperazinium) and R/S-2-mpipSnBr6 for the first time. The formation of R/S-2-mpipSnBr6 in solution was interestingly caused by irreversible DRST of R/S-2-mpip[SnBr3]Br. The second-harmonic generation response of the new phase R-2-mpipSnBr6 is significantly enhanced compared to that of the initial phase R-2-mpip[SnBr3]Br. These structural transformations of chiral tin bromides reflect, to some extent, the DRST commonality of the tin halide family induced by oxidation and serve as a starting point for investigating the structural chirality and asymmetry of chiral metal hybrid halides.

Many-Exciton Quantum Dynamics in a Ruddlesden-Popper Tin Iodide

We present a study on the many-body exciton interactions in a Ruddlesden-Popper tin halide, namely, (PEA)2SnI4 (PEA = phenylethylammonium), using coherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. The optical dephasing times of the third-order polarization observed in these systems are determined by exciton many-body interactions and lattice fluctuations. We investigate the excitation-induced dephasing (EID) and observe a significant reduction of the dephasing time with increasing excitation density as compared to its lead counterpart (PEA)2PbI4, which we have previously reported in a separate publication [J. Chem. Phys.2020, 153, 164706]. Surprisingly, we find that the EID interaction parameter is four orders of magnitude higher in (PEA)2SnI4 than that in (PEA)2PbI4. This increase in the EID rate may be due to exciton localization arising from a more statically disordered lattice in the tin derivative. This is supported by the observation of multiple closely spaced exciton states and the broadening of the linewidth with increasing population time (spectral diffusion), which suggests a static disordered structure relative to the highly dynamic lead-halide. Additionally, we find that the exciton nonlinear coherent lineshape shows evidence of a biexcitonic state with low binding energy (<10 meV) not observed in the lead system. We model the lineshapes based on a stochastic scattering theory that accounts for the interaction with a nonstationary population of dark background excitations. Our study provides evidence of differences in the exciton quantum dynamics between tin- and lead-based Ruddlesden-Popper metal halides (RPMHs) and links them to the exciton-exciton interaction strength and the static disorder aspect of the crystalline structure.

Pressure-Modulated Anomalous Organic-Inorganic Interactions Enhance Structural Distortion and Second-Harmonic Generation in MHyPbBr3 Perovskite

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites possess unique electronic configurations and high structural tunability, rendering them promising for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Despite significant progress in optimizing the structural characteristics of the organic cations and inorganic framework, the role of organic-inorganic interactions in determining the structural and optical properties has long been underappreciated and remains unclear. Here, by employing pressure tuning, we realize continuous regulation of organic-inorganic interactions in a lead halide perovskite, MHyPbBr3 (MHy+ = methylhydrazinium, CH3NH2NH2+). Compression enhances the organic-inorganic interactions by strengthening the Pb-N coordinate bonding and N-H···Br hydrogen bonding, which results in a higher structural distortion in the inorganic framework. Consequently, the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) intensity experiences an 18-fold increase at 1.5 GPa, and the order-disorder phase transition temperature of MHyPbBr3 increases from 408 K under ambient pressure to 454 K at the industrially achievable level of 0.5 GPa. Further compression triggers a sudden non-centrosymmetric to centrosymmetric phase transition, accompanied by an anomalous bandgap increase by 0.44 eV, which stands as the largest boost in all known halide perovskites. Our findings shed light on the intricate correlations among organic-inorganic interactions, octahedral distortion, and SHG properties and, more broadly, provide valuable insights into structural design and property optimization through cation engineering of halide perovskites.

Broadband emission originating from the stereochemical expression of 6s2 lone pairs in two-dimensional lead bromide perovskites

The stereochemical expression of the 6s2 lone pair on the lead atom has a significant impact on the crystal structures and physical properties of lead halide perovskites. Two-dimensional (2D) lead bromide perovskites often exhibit a broadband emission, yet the structural origin of the broadband emission has been under debate. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a 2D lead bromide hybrid (4-chlorophenylammonium)2PbBr4 that consists of a combination of the octahedral unit PbBr6 and the rarely observed capped octahedral unit PbBr7 through corner-sharing and edge-sharing linkages. The seven-coordination geometry indicates a strong stereo-active lone pair on the Pb2+ cation. By comparing this structure with two representative 2D perovskites, (benzylammonium)2PbBr4 and (4-aminotetrahydropyran)2PbBr4, we establish how the lone pair expression affects the local coordination geometry of the Pb2+ cation and the resulting optical and electronic properties. As the Pb-Br bond length increases, the lone pair expression leads to off-centering displacement of Pb2+ within the octahedra and then the formation of seven-coordination capped octahedra. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the off-centering distorted octahedra and capped octahedra are due to the asymmetric distribution of the Pb electrons that have both s and p orbital characteristics. Spectroscopic studies show the photoluminescence spectra evolving from narrowband emission to broadband emission with increasing LPE, as well as softer and more anharmonic lattice vibrations that facilitate exciton self-trapping. Our results demonstrate that lone pairs could be a powerful design rule for developing light emitting materials.

Continuous electroproduction of formate via CO2 reduction on local symmetry-broken single-atom catalysts

Atomic-level coordination engineering is an efficient strategy for tuning the catalytic performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, their rational design has so far been plagued by the lack of a universal correlation between the coordination symmetry and catalytic properties. Herein, we synthesised planar-symmetry-broken CuN3 (PSB-CuN3) SACs through microwave heating for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Remarkably, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited a selectivity of 94.3% towards formate at -0.73 V vs. RHE, surpassing the symmetrical CuN4 catalyst (72.4% at -0.93 V vs. RHE). In a flow cell equipped with a PSB-CuN3 electrode, over 90% formate selectivity was maintained at an average current density of 94.4 mA cm-2 during 100 h operation. By combining definitive structural identification with operando X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the intrinsic local symmetry breaking from planar D4h configuration induces an unconventional dsp hybridisation, and thus a strong correlation between the catalytic activity and microenvironment of metal centre (i.e., coordination number and distortion), with high preference for formate production in CuN3 moiety. The finding opens an avenue for designing efficient SACs with specific local symmetries for selective electrocatalysis.

Synergy of 3D and 2D Perovskites for Durable, Efficient Solar Cells and Beyond

Three-dimensional (3D) organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have emerged in the past few years as a promising material for low-cost, high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Spurred by this recent interest, several subclasses of halide perovskites such as two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have begun to play a significant role in advancing the fundamental understanding of the structural, chemical, and physical properties of halide perovskites, which are technologically relevant. While the chemistry of these 2D materials is similar to that of the 3D halide perovskites, their layered structure with a hybrid organic-inorganic interface induces new emergent properties that can significantly or sometimes subtly be important. Synergistic properties can be realized in systems that combine different materials exhibiting different dimensionalities by exploiting their intrinsic compatibility. In many cases, the weaknesses of each material can be alleviated in heteroarchitectures. For example, 3D-2D halide perovskites can demonstrate novel behavior that neither material would be capable of separately. This review describes how the structural differences between 3D halide perovskites and 2D halide perovskites give rise to their disparate materials properties, discusses strategies for realizing mixed-dimensional systems of various architectures through solution-processing techniques, and presents a comprehensive outlook for the use of 3D-2D systems in solar cells. Finally, we investigate applications of 3D-2D systems beyond photovoltaics and offer our perspective on mixed-dimensional perovskite systems as semiconductor materials with unrivaled tunability, efficiency, and technologically relevant durability.

Nonlinear terahertz control of the lead halide perovskite lattice

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not yet been established. Here, we use intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ and all-inorganic CsPbBr₃ perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 to 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Fröhlich polaron. Our work opens the door to selective control of LHP's vibrational degrees of freedom governing phase transitions and dynamic disorder.

Emerging Halide Perovskite Ferroelectrics

Halide perovskites have gained tremendous attention in the past decade owing to their excellent properties in optoelectronics. Recently, a fascinating property, ferroelectricity, has been discovered in halide perovskites and quickly attracted widespread interest. Compared with traditional perovskite oxide ferroelectrics, halide perovskites display natural advantages such as structural softness, low weight, and easy processing, which are highly desirable in applications pursuing miniaturization and flexibility. This review focuses on the current research progress in halide perovskite ferroelectrics, encompassing the emerging materials systems and their potential applications in ferroelectric photovoltaics, self-powered photodetection, and X-ray detection. The main challenges and possible solutions in the future development of halide perovskite ferroelectric materials are also attempted to be pointed out.

Stable Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

The developments in halide perovskite research target the next era of semiconductors. Photovoltaic solar cells are only one of the technologies that could be exploiting the potential of perovskites soon. Stability and toxicity are two critical aspects of photovoltaic applications because of the long-lasting lifetime and large volumes of the targeted technologies, such as multijunction solar cells with high power conversion efficiency. In this Perspective piece, I discuss how stability and toxicity can be addressed now, incentivizing the research toward lead-free and low-lead formulations. Recent works demonstrated that tin is a possible way out of the toxicity and stability issues of current perovskite formulations. I give speculative directions for stable tin-based perovskite solar cells.

Linear optical afterglow and nonlinear optical harmonic generation from chiral tin(IV) halides: the role of lattice distortions

The striking chemical variability of hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) endows them with fascinating optoelectronic properties. The inorganic skeletons of HOMHs are often flexible and their lattice deformations could serve as an effective factor for enabling the functionalities of HOMHs. Here, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of zero-dimensional (0D) tin(IV) halides have been tuned by structural distortion facilitated by the chiral amines. Enantiopure α-methylbenzyl ammoniums (XMBA, X = Cl, F) effectively transfer their chirality to the inorganic scaffolds when forming the tin(IV) halides, which enables polar arrangements in their crystals and leads to outstanding second-order nonlinear optical performances. In contrast, the racemic mixture of R- and S-FMBA results in the formation of HOMHs with room temperature phosphorescence. The lower lattice deformation in (rac-FMBA)₂SnCl₆ restrains the non-radiative decay from electron-phonon coupling and facilitates the photoluminescence. Meanwhile, the marked π-π interaction stabilizes the T₁ state for phosphorescent emission. These distinct linear and nonlinear optical properties denote the important role that the lattice distortion plays in tuning the optical properties of low-dimensional HOMHs, and offer a promising perspective of 0D tin(IV) halides for applications in optoelectronic materials and devices.

Direct Observation of Transient Structural Dynamics of Atomically Thin Halide Perovskite Nanowires

Halide perovskite is a unique dynamical system, whose structural and chemical processes happening across different timescales have significant impact on its physical properties and device-level performance. However, due to its intrinsic instability, real-time investigation of the structure dynamics of halide perovskite is challenging, which hinders the systematic understanding of the chemical processes in the synthesis, phase transition, and degradation of halide perovskite. Here, we show that atomically thin carbon materials can stabilize ultrathin halide perovskite nanostructures against otherwise detrimental conditions. Moreover, the protective carbon shells enable atomic-level visualization of the vibrational, rotational, and translational movement of halide perovskite unit cells. Albeit atomically thin, protected halide perovskite nanostructures can maintain their structural integrity up to an electron dose rate of 10,000 e^-/Ų·s while exhibiting unusual dynamical behaviors pertaining to the lattice anharmonicity and nanoscale confinement. Our work demonstrates an effective method to protect beam-sensitive materials during in situ observation, unlocking new solutions to study new modes of structure dynamics of nanomaterials.

Spacer-Dependent and Pressure-Tuned Structures and Optoelectronic Properties of 2D Hybrid Halide Perovskites

Compared with their 3D counterparts, 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites (HOIPs) exhibit enhanced chemical stabilities and superior optoelectronic properties, which can be further tuned by the application of external pressure. Here, we report the first high-pressure study on CMA₂PbI₄ (CMA = cylcohexanemethylammonium), a 2D HOIP with a soft organic spacer cation containing a flexible cyclohexyl ring, using UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and vibrational spectroscopy, and synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction, all aided with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Substantial anisotropic compression behavior is observed, as characterized by unprecedented negative linear compressibility along the b axis. Moreover, the pressure dependence of optoelectronic properties is found to be in strong contrast with those of 2D HOIPs with rigid spacer cations. DFT calculations help to understand the compression mechanisms that lead to pressure-induced bandgap narrowing. These findings highlight the important role of soft spacer cations in the pressure-tuned optoelectronic properties and provide guidance to the design of new 2D HOIPs.

Emission Mechanism of Self-Trapped Excitons in Sb3+-Doped All-Inorganic Metal-Halide Perovskites

Sb³⁺ doping confers highly efficient and color-diverse broadband light emission to all-inorganic metal-halide perovskites. However, the emission mechanism is still under debate. Herein, a trace amount of Sb³⁺ ions (<0.1% atomic percentage) doping in the typical all-inorganic perovskites Cs₂NaInCl₆, Rb₃InCl₆, and Cs₂InCl₅·H₂O allows universal observation of the fine structure in the photoluminescence excitation spectrum of the ns² electron. A lifetime mapping method was utilized to reveal the origin of broadband emission triggered by Sb³⁺ doping, by which various fluorescence components can be differentiated. In particular, free-exciton emission was identified at the high-energy end of the broadband emission for all three doped systems. The excitation-energy- and temperature-dependent fluorescence decay further indicates the existence and origin of self-trapped states. The observed structural and vibrational symmetry-dependent emission behaviors suggest dipole interactions can dramatically alter Stokes-shift energy and modulate the light-emitting wavelength.

Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two-Dimensional Multilayered Tin and Germanium Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites are promising tunable semiconductors. Previous studies have focused on Pb-based structures, whereas the multilayered Sn- and Ge-based analogues are largely unexplored, even though they potentially exhibit more diverse structural chemistry and properties associated with the more polarizable ns² lone-pair electrons. Herein, we report the synthesis and structures of 2D tin iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇, where BA = n-butylammonium and A = methylammonium, formamidinium, dimethylammonium, guanidinium, or acetamidinium, and those of 2D germanium iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇, where A = methylammonium or formamidinium. By comparing these structures along with their Pb counterparts, we establish correlations between the effect of group IV-cation's lone-pair stereochemical activity on the perovskite crystal structures and the resulting semiconducting properties such as bandgaps and carrier-phonon interactions and nonlinear optical properties. We find that the strength of carrier-phonon interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a more prominent photoluminescence tail on the low-energy side. Moreover, (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇ exhibit strong second harmonic generation with second-order nonlinear coefficients of ∼10 pm V^-1 that are at least 10 times those of Sn counterparts and 100 times those of Pb counterparts. We also report the third-order two-photon absorption coefficients of (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇ to be ∼10 cm MW^-1, which are one order of magnitude larger than those of the Pb counterparts and traditional inorganic semiconductors. These results not only highlight the role of lone-pair activity in linking the compositions and physical properties of 2D halide perovskites but also demonstrate 2D tin and germanium iodide perovskites as promising lead-free alternatives for nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Achieving circularly polarized luminescence and large piezoelectric response in hybrid rare-earth double perovskite by a chirality induction strategy

Chirality, an intrinsic property of nature, has received increased attention in chemistry, biology, and materials science because it can induce optical rotation, ferroelectricity, nonlinear optical response, and other unique properties. Here, by introducing chirality into hybrid rare-earth double perovskites (HREDPs), we successfully designed and synthesized a pair of enantiomeric three-dimensional (3D) HREDPs, [(R)-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium]₂RbEu(NO₃)₆ (R1) and [(S)-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium]₂RbEu(NO₃)₆ (S1), which possess ferroelasticity, multiaxial ferroelectricity, high quantum yields (84.71% and 83.55%, respectively), and long fluorescence lifetimes (5.404 and 5.256 ms, respectively). Notably, the introduction of chirality induces the coupling of multiaxial ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, which brings about a satisfactory large piezoelectric response (103 and 101 pC N^-1 for R1 and S1, respectively). Moreover, in combination with the chirality and outstanding photoluminescence properties, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was first realized in HREDPs. This work sheds light on the design strategy of molecule-based materials with a large piezoelectric response and excellent CPL activity, and will inspire researchers to further explore the role of chirality in the construction of novel multifunctional materials.

The Ferroelectric-Ferroelastic Debate about Metal Halide Perovskites

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are solution-processed materials with exceptional photoconversion efficiencies that have brought a paradigm shift in photovoltaics. The nature of the peculiar optoelectronic properties underlying such astounding performance is still controversial. The existence of ferroelectricity in MHPs and its alleged impact on photovoltaic activity have fueled an intense debate, in which unanimous consensus is still far from being reached. Here we critically review recent experimental and theoretical results with a two-fold objective: we argue that the occurrence of ferroelectric domains is incompatible with the A-site cation dynamics in MHPs and propose an alternative interpretation of the experiments based on the concept of ferroelasticity. We further underline that ferroic behavior in MHPs would not be relevant at room temperature or higher for the physics of photogenerated charge carriers, since it would be overshadowed by competing effects like polaron formation and ion migration.

Understanding Electron-Phonon Interactions in 3D Lead Halide Perovskites from the Stereochemical Expression of 6s2 Lone Pairs

The electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. Unveiling how the local lattice distortion responds to charge carriers is a critical step toward understanding the e-ph interaction in LHPs. Herein, we advance a fundamental understanding of the e-ph interaction in LHPs from the perspective of stereochemical activity of 6s² lone-pair electrons on the Pb²⁺ cation. We demonstrate a model system based on three LHPs with distinctive lone-pair activities for studying the structure-property relationships. By tuning the A-cation chemistry, we synthesized single-crystal CsPbBr₃, (MA_0.13EA_0.87)PbBr₃ (MA⁺ = methylammonium; EA⁺ = ethylammonium), and (MHy)PbBr₃ (MHy⁺ = methylhydrazinium), which exhibit stereo-inactive, dynamic stereo-active, and static stereo-active lone pairs, respectively. This gives rise to distinctive local lattice distortions and low-frequency vibrational modes. We find that the e-ph interaction leads to a blue shift of the band gap as temperature increases in the structure with the dynamic stereo-active lone pair but to a red shift in the structure with the static stereo-active lone pair. Furthermore, analyses of the temperature-dependent low-energy photoluminescence tails reveal that the strength of the e-ph interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a transition from a large polaron to a small polaron, which has significant influence on the emission spectra and charge carrier dynamics. Our results highlight the role of the lone-pair activity in controlling the band gap, phonon, and polaronic effect in LHPs and provide guidelines for optimizing the optoelectronic properties, especially for tin-based and germanium-based halide perovskites, where stereo-active lone pairs are more prominent than their lead counterparts.

(C5H6N)Pb2X5 (X = Cl, Br): Hybrid Lead Halides Based on Seven-Coordinate Pb(II)

Hybrid lead halides are a diverse family of compounds, of interest for their optoelectronic properties, that vary in the dimensionality and connectivity of their inorganic substructures. The great majority of these compounds are based on lead-centered octahedra, with few examples featuring inorganic architectures containing higher coordination numbers. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a pyridinium lead bromide phase that is based on seven-coordinate Pb(II) centers. Through edge- and face-sharing, the polyhedra form a corrugated, two-dimensional inorganic substructure. Electronic structure calculations were used to examine the band structure and the role of the stereoactive lone pair in the inherently asymmetric, seven-coordinate Pb(II) geometry. For reference, we have visualized the role of the lone pair in the binary halide PbBr₂, which also has a seven-coordinate inner ligand sphere. A comparison of the new structure with the limited number of existing hybrid lead halides with similar inorganic architectures highlights the templating role of the organic cation for these compounds. We also contribute characterization and discussion of isomorphic pyridinium lead chloride, which had been deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database but never, to our knowledge, addressed in the literature. The compounds were synthesized using solution conditions and structures determined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The materials were also characterized via powder X-ray diffraction, combustion elemental analysis, and diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy. While the structures reported here are centrosymmetric, the seven-coordinate, capped trigonal prismatic geometry that we have identified is a source of local asymmetry that could be used as a component in designing globally noncentrosymmetric structures.

Stabilization of Metastable Halide Perovskite Lattices in the 2D Limit

Metal halide perovskites constitute a new class of semiconductors that are structurally tailorable, exhibiting rich structural polymorphs. In this perspective, the polymorphism in lead halide perovskites is described-a material system currently used for high-performance photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Strategies for stabilizing the metastable perovskite polymorphs based on crystal size reduction and surface functionalization are critically reviewed. Focus is on an unprecedented stabilization of metastable perovskite lattices in the 2D limit (e.g., with a thickness down to a few unit cells) due to the dominance of surface effects. This stabilization allows the incorporation of various A-cations that deemed oversized for 3D perovskites into the 2D perovskite lattices, which bring new insights on the relationships between the crystal structures and optoelectronic properties and lead to emergent ferroelectricity in halide perovskites. A comprehensive understanding is provided on how the A-cations influence the structural, optoelectronic, and ferroelectric properties, with an emphasis on the second order Jahn-Teller distortion caused by the oversized A-cations. Finally, future perspectives on new structure exploration and studies of fundamental photophysical properties using stabilized perovskite lattices are provided.
