Tunable correlated Chern insulator and ferromagnetism in a moiré superlattice

Heterostrain-Induced Zeeman-like Splitting in h-BN-Encapsulated Bilayer WSe2

Heterostrain is predicted to induce exceptionally rich physics in atomically thin two-dimensional structures by modifying the symmetry and optical selection rules. In this work, we introduce heterostrain into WSe2 bilayers by combining h-BN encapsulation and high-temperature vacuum annealing. Nonvolatile heterostrain gives rise to a Zeeman-like splitting associated with the elliptically polarized optical emission of interlayer K-K excitons. Further manipulation of the interlayer exciton emission in an external magnetic field reveals that the Zeeman-like splitting cannot be eliminated even in a magnetic field of up to ±6 T. We propose a microscopic picture with respect to the layer and valley pseudospin to interpret the results. Our findings imply an intriguing way to encode binary information with the layer pseudospin enabled by the heterostrain and open a venue for manipulating the layer pseudospin with heterostrain engineering, optical pseudospin injection, and an external magnetic field.

Giant Second Harmonic Generation in Supertwisted WS2 Spirals Grown in Step-Edge Particle-Induced Non-Euclidean Surfaces

In moiré crystals resulting from the stacking of twisted two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, a subtle adjustment in the twist angle surprisingly gives rise to a wide range of correlated optical and electrical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of supertwisted WS2 spirals and the observation of giant second harmonic generation (SHG) in these spirals. Supertwisted WS2 spirals featuring different twist angles are synthesized on a Euclidean or step-edge particle-induced non-Euclidean surface using carefully designed water-assisted chemical vapor deposition. We observed an oscillatory dependence of SHG intensity on layer number, attributed to atomically phase-matched nonlinear dipoles within layers of supertwisted spiral crystals where inversion symmetry is restored. Through an investigation into the twist angle evolution of SHG intensity, we discovered that the stacking model between layers plays a crucial role in determining the nonlinearity, and the SHG signals in supertwisted spirals exhibit enhancements by a factor of 2 to 136 when compared with the SHG of the single-layer structure. These findings provide helpful perspectives on the rational growth of 2D twisted structures and the implementation of twist angle adjustable endowing them great potential for exploring strong coupling correlation physics and applications in the field of twistronics.

Emergent phases in graphene flat bands

Electronic correlations in two-dimensional materials play a crucial role in stabilising emergent phases of matter. The realisation of correlation-driven phenomena in graphene has remained a longstanding goal, primarily due to the absence of strong electron-electron interactions within its low-energy bands. In this context, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently emerged as a novel platform featuring correlated phases favoured by the low-energy flat bands of the underlying moiré superlattice. Notably, the observation of correlated insulators and superconductivity, and the interplay between these phases have garnered significant attention. A wealth of correlated phases with unprecedented tunability was discovered subsequently, including orbital ferromagnetism, Chern insulators, strange metallicity, density waves, and nematicity. However, a comprehensive understanding of these closely competing phases remains elusive. The ability to controllably twist and stack multiple graphene layers has enabled the creation of a whole new family of moiré superlattices with myriad properties. Here, we review the progress and development achieved so far, encompassing the rich phase diagrams offered by these graphene-based moiré systems. Additionally, we discuss multiple phases recently observed in non-moiré multilayer graphene systems. Finally, we outline future opportunities and challenges for the exploration of hidden phases in this new generation of moiré materials.

Atomic scale quantum anomalous hall effect in monolayer graphene/MnBi2Te4 heterostructure

The two-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is direct evidence of non-trivial Berry curvature topology in condensed matter physics. Searching for QAH in 2D materials, particularly with simplified fabrication methods, poses a significant challenge in future applications. Despite numerous theoretical works proposed for the QAH effect with C = 2 in graphene, neglecting magnetism sources such as proper substrate effects lacks experimental evidence. In this work, we propose the QAH effect in graphene/MnBi2Te4 (MBT) heterostructure based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The monolayer MBT introduces spin-orbital coupling, Zeeman exchange field, and Kekulé distortion as a substrate effect into graphene, resulting in QAH with C = 1 in the heterostructure. Our effective Hamiltonian further presents a rich phase diagram that has not been studied previously. Our work provides a new and practical way to explore the QAH effect in monolayer graphene and the magnetic topological phases by the flexibility of MBT family materials.

Multiferroicity and Topology in Twisted Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Van der Waals heterostructures have recently emerged as an exciting platform for investigating the effects of strong electronic correlations, including various forms of magnetic or electrical orders. Here, we perform an unbiased exact diagonalization study of the effects of interactions on topological flat bands of twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) at odd integer fillings. For hole-filling ν_{h}=1, we find that the Chern insulator phase, expected from interaction-induced spin-valley polarization of the bare bands, is quite fragile, and gives way to spontaneous multiferroic order-coexisting ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, in the presence of long-range Coulomb repulsion. We provide a simple real-space picture to understand the phase diagram as a function of interaction range and strength. Our findings establish twisted TMDs as a novel and highly tunable platform for multiferroicity, and we outline a potential route towards electrical control of magnetism in the multiferroic phase.

Inversion Symmetry-Broken Tetralayer Graphene Probed by Second-Harmonic Generation

Stacking orders provide a unique way to tune the properties of two-dimensional materials. Recently, ABCB-stacked tetralayer graphene has been predicted to possess atypical elemental ferroelectricity arising from its symmetry breaking but has been experimentally explored very little. Here, we observe pronounced nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) in ABCB-stacked tetralayer graphene while absent in both ABAB- and ABCA-stacked allotropes. Our results provide direct evidence of symmetry breaking in ABCB-stacked tetralayer graphene. The remarkable contrast in the SHG spectra of tetralayer graphene allows straightforward identification of ABCB domains from the other two kinds of stacking order and facilitates the characterization of their crystalline orientation. The employed SHG technique serves as a convenient tool for exploring the intriguing physics and novel nonlinear optics in ABCB-stacked graphene, where spontaneous polarization and intrinsically gapped flat bands coexist. Our results establish ABCB-stacked graphene as a unique platform for studying the rare ferroelectricity in noncentrosymmetric elemental structures.

Selective and quasi-continuous switching of ferroelectric Chern insulator devices for neuromorphic computing

Quantum materials exhibit dissipationless topological edge state transport with quantized Hall conductance, offering notable potential for fault-tolerant computing technologies. However, the development of topological edge state-based computing devices remains a challenge. Here we report the selective and quasi-continuous ferroelectric switching of topological Chern insulator devices, showcasing a proof-of-concept demonstration in noise-immune neuromorphic computing. We fabricate this ferroelectric Chern insulator device by encapsulating magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with doubly aligned h-BN layers and observe the coexistence of the interfacial ferroelectricity and the topological Chern insulating states. The observed ferroelectricity exhibits an anisotropic dependence on the in-plane magnetic field. By tuning the amplitude of the gate voltage pulses, we achieve ferroelectric switching between any pair of Chern insulating states in the presence of a finite magnetic field, resulting in 1,280 ferroelectric states with distinguishable Hall resistance levels on a single device. Furthermore, we demonstrate deterministic switching between two arbitrary levels among the record-high number of ferroelectric states. This unique switching capability enables the implementation of a convolutional neural network resistant to external noise, utilizing the quantized Hall conductance levels of the Chern insulator device as weights. Our study provides a promising avenue towards the development of topological quantum neuromorphic computing, where functionality and performance can be drastically enhanced by topological quantum materials.

Preservation of Topological Surface States in Millimeter-Scale Transferred Membranes

Ultrathin topological insulator membranes are building blocks of exotic quantum matter. However, traditional epitaxy of these materials does not facilitate stacking in arbitrary orders, while mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals is also challenging due to the non-negligible interlayer coupling therein. Here we liberate millimeter-scale films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, down to 3 quintuple layers. We characterize the preservation of the topological surface states and quantum well states in transferred Bi2Se3 films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Leveraging the photon-energy-dependent surface sensitivity, the photoemission spectra taken with 6 and 21.2 eV photons reveal a transfer-induced migration of the topological surface states from the top to the inner layers. By establishing clear electronic structures of the transferred films and unveiling the wave function relocation of the topological surface states, our work lays the physics foundation crucial for the future fabrication of artificially stacked topological materials with single-layer precision.

A Tunable Graphene Superlattice with Deformable Periodical Nano-Gating

Graphene superlattices have simple and controllable electronic band structures, which can also be electrostatically tuned. They have been widely studied for band engineering and strong correlated physics, and have led to the discovery of a variety of exciting phenomena. To experimentally study the physics of graphene superlattices in a systematic way, it is desirable to control the structure parameters, which barely exist at the moment, onsite. Here, a tunable superlattice with graphene and a deformable gating structure is demonstrated. The period and duty cycle of the nano-gating, and furthermore of the superlattice potential, can be tuned through altering the shape of the gating structure with piezo-actuators, offering a tunable band structure. The tuning of the electronic band structures of both a two-dimensional and a one-dimensional superlattice is demonstrated with numerical simulations, offering a new approach for tunable electronic and photonic devices.

Chern Insulator States with Tunable Chern Numbers in a Graphene Moiré Superlattice

Moiré superlattices, constituted by two-dimensional materials, demonstrate a variety of strongly correlated and topological phenomena including correlated insulators, superconductivity, and integer/fractional Chern insulators. In the realm of topological nontrivial Chern insulators within specific moiré superlattices, previous studies usually observe a single Chern number at a given filling factor in a device. Here we present the observation of gate-tunable Chern numbers within the Chern insulator state of an ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice device. Near quarter filling, the moiré superlattice exhibits spontaneous valley polarization and distinct ferromagnetism associated with the Chern insulator states over a range of the displacement field. Surprisingly we find a transition of the Chern number from C = 3 to 4 as the displacement field is increased. Our observation of gate-tunable correlated Chern insulators suggests new ways to control and manipulate topological states in a moiré superlattice device.

Rules for dissipationless topotronics

Topological systems hosting gapless boundary states have attracted huge attention as promising components for next-generation information processing, attributed to their capacity for dissipationless electronics. Nevertheless, recent theoretical and experimental inquiries have revealed the emergence of energy dissipation in precisely quantized electrical transport. Here, we present a criterion for the realization of truly no-dissipation design, characterized as Nin = Ntunl + Nbs, where Nin, Ntunl, and Nbs represent the number of modes participating in injecting, tunneling, and backscattering processes, respectively. The key lies in matching the number of injecting, tunneling, and backscattering modes, ensuring the equilibrium among all engaged modes inside the device. Among all the topological materials, we advocate for the indispensability of Chern insulators exhibiting higher Chern numbers to achieve functional devices and uphold the no-dissipation rule simultaneously. Furthermore, we design the topological current divider and collector, evading dissipation upon fulfilling the established criterion. Our work paves the path for developing the prospective topotronics.

Thermodynamic Response and Neutral Excitations in Integer and Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall States Emerging from Correlated Flat Bands

Integer and fractional Chern insulators have been extensively explored in correlated flat band models. Recently, the prediction and experimental observation of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking have garnered attention. While the thermodynamics of integer quantum anomalous Hall (IQAH) states have been systematically studied, our theoretical knowledge on thermodynamic properties of FQAH states has been severely limited. Here, we delve into the general thermodynamic response and collective excitations of both IQAH and FQAH states within the paradigmatic flat Chern-band model with remote band considered. Our key findings include (i) in both ν=1 IQAH and ν=1/3 FQAH states, even without spin fluctuations, the charge-neutral collective excitations would lower the onset temperature of these topological states, to a value significantly smaller than the charge gap, due to band mixing and multiparticle scattering; (ii) by employing large-scale thermodynamic simulations in FQAH states in the presence of strong interband mixing between C=±1 bands, we find that the lowest collective excitations manifest as the zero-momentum excitons in the IQAH state, whereas in the FQAH state, they take the form of magnetorotons with finite momentum; (iii) the unique charge oscillations in FQAH states are exhibited with distinct experimental signatures, which we propose to detect in future experiments.

The observation of π-shifts in the Little-Parks effect in 4Hb-TaS2

Finding evidence of non-trivial pairing states is one of the greatest experimental challenges in the field of unconventional superconductivity. Such evidence requires phase-sensitive probes susceptible to the internal structure of the order parameter. We report the measurement of the Little-Parks effect in the unconventional superconductor candidate 4Hb-TaS2. In half of our rings, which are fabricated from single-crystals, we find a π-shift in the transition-temperature oscillations. According to theory, such a π-shift is only possible if the order parameter is non-s-wave. In the absence of crystallographic defects, the shift provides evidence of a multi-component order parameter. Thus, this observation increases the likelihood of the two-component order parameter scenario in 4Hb-TaS2. Furthermore, we show that Tc is enhanced as a function of the out-of-plane field when a constant in-plane field is applied, which we explain using a two-component order-parameter.

Engineering the Band Topology in a Rhombohedral Trilayer Graphene Moiré Superlattice

Moiré superlattices have become a fertile playground for topological Chern insulators, where the displacement field can tune the quantum geometry and Chern number of the topological band. However, in experiments, displacement field engineering of spontaneous symmetry-breaking Chern bands has not been demonstrated. Here in a rhombohedral trilayer graphene moiré superlattice, we use a thermodynamic probe and transport measurement to monitor the Chern number evolution as a function of the displacement field. At a quarter filling of the moiré band, a novel Chern number of three is unveiled to compete with the well-established number of two upon turning on the electric field and survives when the displacement field is sufficiently strong. The transition can be reconciled by a nematic instability on the Fermi surface due to the pseudomagnetic vector field potentials associated with moiré strain patterns. Our work opens more opportunities to active control of Chern numbers in van der Waals moiré systems.

Polarization-driven band topology evolution in twisted MoTe2 and WSe2

Motivated by recent experimental observations of opposite Chern numbers in R-type twisted MoTe2 and WSe2 homobilayers, we perform large-scale density-functional-theory calculations with machine learning force fields to investigate moiré band topology across a range of twist angles in both materials. We find that the Chern numbers of the moiré frontier bands change sign as a function of twist angle, and this change is driven by the competition between moiré ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. Our large-scale calculations, enabled by machine learning methods, reveal crucial insights into interactions across different scales in twisted bilayer systems. The interplay between atomic-level relaxation effects and moiré-scale electrostatic potential variation opens new avenues for the design of intertwined topological and correlated states, including the possibility of mimicking higher Landau level physics in the absence of magnetic field.

Tunable exciton valley-pseudospin orders in moiré superlattices

Excitons in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have offered an attractive platform for optoelectronic and valleytronic devices. Further realizations of correlated phases of excitons promise device concepts not possible in the single particle picture. Here we report tunable exciton "spin" orders in WSe2/WS2 moiré superlattices. We find evidence of an in-plane (xy) order of exciton "spin"-here, valley pseudospin-around exciton filling vex = 1, which strongly suppresses the out-of-plane "spin" polarization. Upon increasing vex or applying a small magnetic field of ~10 mT, it transitions into an out-of-plane ferromagnetic (FM-z) spin order that spontaneously enhances the "spin" polarization, i.e., the circular helicity of emission light is higher than the excitation. The phase diagram is qualitatively captured by a spin-1/2 Bose-Hubbard model and is distinct from the fermion case. Our study paves the way for engineering exotic phases of matter from correlated spinor bosons, opening the door to a host of unconventional quantum devices.

Observation of dichotomic field-tunable electronic structure in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) provides a fascinating platform for engineering flat bands and inducing correlated phenomena. By designing the stacking architecture of graphene layers, twisted multilayer graphene can exhibit different symmetries with rich tunability. For example, in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) which breaks the C2z symmetry, transport measurements reveal an asymmetric phase diagram under an out-of-plane electric field, exhibiting correlated insulating state and ferromagnetic state respectively when reversing the field direction. Revealing how the electronic structure evolves with electric field is critical for providing a better understanding of such asymmetric field-tunable properties. Here we report the experimental observation of field-tunable dichotomic electronic structure of tMBG by nanospot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (NanoARPES) with operando gating. Interestingly, selective enhancement of the relative spectral weight contributions from monolayer and bilayer graphene is observed when switching the polarity of the bias voltage. Combining experimental results with theoretical calculations, the origin of such field-tunable electronic structure, resembling either tBLG or twisted double-bilayer graphene (tDBG), is attributed to the selectively enhanced contribution from different stacking graphene layers with a strong electron-hole asymmetry. Our work provides electronic structure insights for understanding the rich field-tunable physics of tMBG.

Mapping twist-tuned multiband topology in bilayer WSe2

Semiconductor moiré superlattices have been shown to host a wide array of interaction-driven ground states. However, twisted homobilayers have been difficult to study in the limit of large moiré wavelengths, where interactions are most dominant. In this study, we conducted local electronic compressibility measurements of twisted bilayer WSe2 (tWSe2) at small twist angles. We demonstrated multiple topological bands that host a series of Chern insulators at zero magnetic field near a "magic angle" around 1.23°. Using a locally applied electric field, we induced a topological quantum-phase transition at one hole per moiré unit cell. Our work establishes the topological phase diagram of a generalized Kane-Mele-Hubbard model in tWSe2, demonstrating a tunable platform for strongly correlated topological phases.

Layer-polarized ferromagnetism in rhombohedral multilayer graphene

Flat-band systems with strongly correlated electrons can exhibit a variety of phenomena, such as correlated insulating and topological states, unconventional superconductivity, and ferromagnetism. Rhombohedral multilayer graphene has recently emerged as a promising platform for investigating exotic quantum states due to its hosting of topologically protected surface flat bands at low energy, which have a layer-dependent energy dispersion. However, the complex relationship between the surface flat bands and the highly dispersive high-energy bands makes it difficult to study correlated surface states. In this study, we introduce moiré superlattices as a method to isolate the surface flat bands of rhombohedral multilayer graphene. The observed pronounced screening effects in the moiré potential-modulated rhombohedral multilayer graphene indicate that the two surface states are electronically decoupled. The flat bands that are isolated promote correlated surface states in areas that are distant from the charge neutrality points. Notably, we observe tunable layer-polarized ferromagnetism, which is evidenced by a hysteretic anomalous Hall effect. This is achieved by polarizing the surface states with finite displacement fields.

Higher order gaps in the renormalized band structure of doubly aligned hBN/bilayer graphene moiré superlattice

This paper presents our findings on the recursive band gap engineering of chiral fermions in bilayer graphene doubly aligned with hBN. Using two interfering moiré potentials, we generate a supermoiré pattern that renormalizes the electronic bands of the pristine bilayer graphene, resulting in higher order fractal gaps even at very low energies. These Bragg gaps can be mapped using a unique linear combination of periodic areas within the system. To validate our findings, we use electronic transport measurements to identify the position of these gaps as a function of the carrier density. We establish their agreement with the predicted carrier densities and corresponding quantum numbers obtained using the continuum model. Our study provides strong evidence of the quantization of the momentum-space area of quasi-Brillouin zones in a minimally incommensurate lattice. It fills important gaps in the understanding of band structure engineering of Dirac fermions with a doubly periodic superlattice spinor potential.

Local atomic stacking and symmetry in twisted graphene trilayers

Moiré superlattices formed by twisting trilayers of graphene are a useful model for studying correlated electron behaviour and offer several advantages over their formative bilayer analogues, including a more diverse collection of correlated phases and more robust superconductivity. Spontaneous structural relaxation alters the behaviour of moiré superlattices considerably and has been suggested to play an important role in the relative stability of superconductivity in trilayers. Here we use an interferometric four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy approach to directly probe the local graphene layer alignment over a wide range of trilayer graphene structures. Our results inform a thorough understanding of how reconstruction modulates the local lattice symmetries crucial for establishing correlated phases in twisted graphene trilayers, evincing a relaxed structure that is markedly different from that proposed previously.

Electric-Field-Tunable Edge Transport in Bernal-Stacked Trilayer Graphene

This Letter presents a nonlocal study on the electric-field-tunable edge transport in h-BN-encapsulated dual-gated Bernal-stacked (ABA) trilayer graphene across various displacement fields (D) and temperatures (T). Our measurements revealed that the nonlocal resistance (R_{NL}) surpassed the expected classical Ohmic contribution by a factor of at least 2 orders of magnitude. Through scaling analysis, we found that the nonlocal resistance scales linearly with the local resistance (R_{L}) only when the D exceeds a critical value of ∼0.2  V/nm. Additionally, we observed that the scaling exponent remains constant at unity for temperatures below the bulk-band gap energy threshold (T<25  K). Further, the value of R_{NL} decreases in a linear fashion as the channel length (L) increases. These experimental findings provide evidence for edge-mediated charge transport in ABA trilayer graphene under the influence of a finite displacement field. Furthermore, our theoretical calculations support these results by demonstrating the emergence of dispersive edge modes within the bulk-band gap energy range when a sufficient displacement field is applied.

Electron/infrared-phonon coupling in ABC trilayer graphene

Stacking order plays a crucial role in determining the crystal symmetry and has significant impacts on electronic, optical, magnetic, and topological properties. Electron-phonon coupling, which is central to a wide range of intriguing quantum phenomena, is expected to be intricately connected with stacking order. Understanding the stacking order-dependent electron-phonon coupling is essential for understanding peculiar physical phenomena associated with electron-phonon coupling, such as superconductivity and charge density waves. In this study, we investigate the effect of stacking order on electron-infrared phonon coupling in graphene trilayers. By using gate-tunable Raman spectroscopy and excitation frequency-dependent near-field infrared nanoscopy, we show that rhombohedral ABC-stacked trilayer graphene has a significant electron-infrared phonon coupling strength. Our findings provide novel insights into the superconductivity and other fundamental physical properties of rhombohedral ABC-stacked trilayer graphene, and can enable nondestructive and high-throughput imaging of trilayer graphene stacking order using Raman scattering.

Stacking Order Engineering of Two-Dimensional Materials and Device Applications

Stacking orders in 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials dictate the relative sliding (lateral displacement) and twisting (rotation) between atomically thin layers. By altering the stacking order, many new ferroic, strongly correlated and topological orderings emerge with exotic electrical, optical and magnetic properties. Thanks to the weak vdW interlayer bonding, such highly flexible and energy-efficient stacking order engineering has transformed the design of quantum properties in 2D vdW materials, unleashing the potential for miniaturized high-performance device applications in electronics, spintronics, photonics, and surface chemistry. This Review provides a comprehensive overview of stacking order engineering in 2D vdW materials and their device applications, ranging from the typical fabrication and characterization methods to the novel physical properties and the emergent slidetronics and twistronics device prototyping. The main emphasis is on the critical role of stacking orders affecting the interlayer charge transfer, orbital coupling and flat band formation for the design of innovative materials with on-demand quantum properties and surface potentials. By demonstrating a correlation between the stacking configurations and device functionality, we highlight their implications for next-generation electronic, photonic and chemical energy conversion devices. We conclude with our perspective of this exciting field including challenges and opportunities for future stacking order engineering research.

Correlated insulator and Chern insulators in pentalayer rhombohedral-stacked graphene

Rhombohedral-stacked multilayer graphene hosts a pair of flat bands touching at zero energy, which should give rise to correlated electron phenomena that can be tuned further by an electric field. Moreover, when electron correlation breaks the isospin symmetry, the valley-dependent Berry phase at zero energy may give rise to topologically non-trivial states. Here we measure electron transport through hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated pentalayer graphene down to 100 mK. We observed a correlated insulating state with resistance at the megaohm level or greater at charge density n = 0 and displacement field D = 0. Tight-binding calculations predict a metallic ground state under these conditions. By increasing D, we observed a Chern insulator state with C = -5 and two other states with C = -3 at a magnetic field of around 1 T. At high D and n, we observed isospin-polarized quarter- and half-metals. Hence, rhombohedral pentalayer graphene exhibits two different types of Fermi-surface instability, one driven by a pair of flat bands touching at zero energy, and one induced by the Stoner mechanism in a single flat band. Our results establish rhombohedral multilayer graphene as a suitable system for exploring intertwined electron correlation and topology phenomena in natural graphitic materials without the need for moiré superlattice engineering.

Fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect in multilayer graphene

The fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect (FQAHE), the analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect1 at zero magnetic field, is predicted to exist in topological flat bands under spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking2-6. The demonstration of FQAHE could lead to non-Abelian anyons that form the basis of topological quantum computation7-9. So far, FQAHE has been observed only in twisted MoTe2 at a moiré filling factor v > 1/2 (refs. 10-13). Graphene-based moiré superlattices are believed to host FQAHE with the potential advantage of superior material quality and higher electron mobility. Here we report the observation of integer and fractional QAH effects in a rhombohedral pentalayer graphene-hBN moiré superlattice. At zero magnetic field, we observed plateaus of quantized Hall resistance [Formula: see text] at v = 1, 2/3, 3/5, 4/7, 4/9, 3/7 and 2/5 of the moiré superlattice, respectively, accompanied by clear dips in the longitudinal resistance Rxx. Rxy equals [Formula: see text] at v = 1/2 and varies linearly with v, similar to the composite Fermi liquid in the half-filled lowest Landau level at high magnetic fields14-16. By tuning the gate-displacement field D and v, we observed phase transitions from composite Fermi liquid and FQAH states to other correlated electron states. Our system provides an ideal platform for exploring charge fractionalization and (non-Abelian) anyonic braiding at zero magnetic field7-9,17-19, especially considering a lateral junction between FQAHE and superconducting regions in the same device20-22.

Quantized anomalous Hall resistivity achieved in molecular beam epitaxy-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides a feasible pathway to the high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect as well as various novel topological quantum phases. Although quantized transport properties have been observed in exfoliated MnBi2Te4 thin flakes, it remains a big challenge to achieve molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films even close to the quantized regime. In this work, we report the realization of quantized anomalous Hall resistivity in MBE-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films with the chemical potential tuned by both controlled in situ oxygen exposure and top gating. We find that elongated post-annealing obviously elevates the temperature to achieve quantization of the Hall resistivity, but also increases the residual longitudinal resistivity, indicating a picture of high-quality QAH puddles weakly coupled by tunnel barriers. These results help to clarify the puzzles in previous experimental studies on MnBi2Te4 and to find a way out of the big difficulty in obtaining MnBi2Te4 samples showing quantized transport properties.

Spontaneous broken-symmetry insulator and metals in tetralayer rhombohedral graphene

Interactions among charge carriers in graphene can lead to the spontaneous breaking of multiple degeneracies. When increasing the number of graphene layers following rhombohedral stacking, the dominant role of Coulomb interactions becomes pronounced due to the significant reduction in kinetic energy. In this study, we employ phonon-polariton-assisted near-field infrared imaging to determine the stacking orders of tetralayer graphene devices. Through quantum transport measurements, we observe a range of spontaneous broken-symmetry states and their transitions, which can be finely tuned by carrier density n and electric displacement field D. Specifically, we observe a layer-antiferromagnetic insulator at n = D = 0 with a gap of approximately 15 meV. Increasing D allows for a continuous phase transition from a layer-antiferromagnetic insulator to a layer-polarized insulator. By simultaneously tuning n and D, we observe isospin-polarized metals, including spin-valley-polarized and spin-polarized metals. These transitions are associated with changes in the Fermi surface topology and are consistent with the Stoner criteria. Our findings highlight the efficient fabrication of specially stacked multilayer graphene devices and demonstrate that crystalline multilayer graphene is an ideal platform for investigating a wide range of broken symmetries driven by Coulomb interactions.

Optical properties and plasmons in moiré structures

The discoveries of numerous exciting phenomena in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) are stimulating significant investigations on moiré structures that possess a tunable moiré potential. Optical response can provide insights into the electronic structures and transport phenomena of non-twisted and twisted moiré structures. In this article, we review both experimental and theoretical studies of optical properties such as optical conductivity, dielectric function, non-linear optical response, and plasmons in moiré structures composed of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and/or transition metal dichalcogenides. Firstly, a comprehensive introduction to the widely employed methodology on optical properties is presented. After, moiré potential induced optical conductivity and plasmons in non-twisted structures are reviewed, such as single layer graphene-hBN, bilayer graphene-hBN and graphene-metal moiré heterostructures. Next, recent investigations of twist-angle dependent optical response and plasmons are addressed in twisted moiré structures. Additionally, we discuss how optical properties and plasmons could contribute to the understanding of the many-body effects and superconductivity observed in moiré structures.

Terahertz linear/non-linear anomalous Hall conductivity of moiré TMD hetero-nanoribbons as topological valleytronics materials

Twisted moiré van der Waals heterostructures hold promise to provide a robust quantum simulation platform for strongly correlated materials and realize elusive states of matter such as topological states in the laboratory. We demonstrated that the moiré bands of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero-nanoribbons exhibit non-trivial topological order due to the tendency of valence and conduction band states in K valleys to form giant band gaps when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is taken into account. Among the features of twisted WS[Formula: see text]/MoS[Formula: see text] and WSe[Formula: see text]/MoSe[Formula: see text], we found that the heavy fermions associated with the topological flat bands and the presence of strongly correlated states, enhance anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) away from the magic angle. By band analysis, we showed that the topmost conduction bands from the ± K-valleys are perfectly flat and carry a spin/valley Chern number. Moreover, we showed that the non-linear anomalous Hall effect in moiré TMD hetero-nanoribbons can be used to manipulate terahertz (THz) radiation. Our findings establish twisted heterostructures of group-VI TMD nanoribbons as a tunable platform for engineering topological valley quantum phases and THz non-linear Hall conductivity.

Gate-tunable anomalous Hall effect in Bernal tetralayer graphene

Large spin-orbit coupling is often thought to be critical in realizing magnetic order-locked charge transport such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Recently, artificial stacks of two-dimensional materials, e.g., magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride heterostructures and dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene, have become platforms for realizing AHE without spin-orbit coupling. However, these stacking arrangements are not energetically favorable, impeding experiments and further device engineering. Here we report an anomalous Hall effect in Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene devices (BTG), the most stable configuration of four-layer graphene. BTG AHE is switched on by a displacement field and is most pronounced at low carrier densities. The onset of AHE occurs in tandem with a full metal to a broken isospin transition indicating an orbital origin of the itinerant ferromagnetism. At lowest densities, BTG exhibits an unconventional hysteresis with step-like anomalous Hall plateaus. Persisting to several tens of kelvin, AHE in BTG demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of magnetic order in readily available and stable multilayer Bernal graphene stacks-a new venue for intrinsic non-reciprocal responses.

Orbital multiferroicity in pentalayer rhombohedral graphene

Ferroic orders describe spontaneous polarization of spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom in materials. Materials exhibiting multiple ferroic orders, known as multiferroics, have important parts in multifunctional electrical and magnetic device applications1-4. Two-dimensional materials with honeycomb lattices offer opportunities to engineer unconventional multiferroicity, in which the ferroic orders are driven purely by the orbital degrees of freedom and not by electron spin. These include ferro-valleytricity corresponding to the electron valley5 and ferro-orbital-magnetism6 supported by quantum geometric effects. These orbital multiferroics could offer strong valley-magnetic couplings and large responses to external fields-enabling device applications such as multiple-state memory elements and electric control of the valley and magnetic states. Here we report orbital multiferroicity in pentalayer rhombohedral graphene using low-temperature magneto-transport measurements. We observed anomalous Hall signals Rxy with an exceptionally large Hall angle (tanΘH > 0.6) and orbital magnetic hysteresis at hole doping. There are four such states with different valley polarizations and orbital magnetizations, forming a valley-magnetic quartet. By sweeping the gate electric field E, we observed a butterfly-shaped hysteresis of Rxy connecting the quartet. This hysteresis indicates a ferro-valleytronic order that couples to the composite field E · B (where B is the magnetic field), but not to the individual fields. Tuning E would switch each ferroic order independently and achieve non-volatile switching of them together. Our observations demonstrate a previously unknown type of multiferroics and point to electrically tunable ultralow-power valleytronic and magnetic devices.

Emerging Characteristics and Properties of Moiré Materials

In recent years, scientists have conducted extensive research on Moiré materials and have discovered some compelling properties. The Moiré superlattice allows superconductivity through flat-band and strong correlation effects. The presence of flat bands causes the Moiré material to exhibit topological properties as well. Modulating electronic interactions with magnetic fields in Moiré materials enables the fractional quantum Hall effect. In addition, Moiré materials have ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic properties. By tuning the interlayer coupling and spin interactions of the Moiré superlattice, different magnetic properties can be achieved. Finally, this review also discusses the applications of Moiré materials in the fields of photocurrent, superconductivity, and thermoelectricity. Overall, Moiré superlattices provide a new dimension in the development of two-dimensional materials.

Thermodynamic evidence of fractional Chern insulator in moiré MoTe2

Chern insulators, which are the lattice analogues of the quantum Hall states, can potentially manifest high-temperature topological orders at zero magnetic field to enable next-generation topological quantum devices1-3. Until now, integer Chern insulators have been experimentally demonstrated in several systems at zero magnetic field3-8, whereas fractional Chern insulators have been reported in only graphene-based systems under a finite magnetic field9,10. The emergence of semiconductor moiré materials11, which support tunable topological flat bands12,13, provides an opportunity to realize fractional Chern insulators13-16. Here we report thermodynamic evidence of both integer and fractional Chern insulators at zero magnetic field in small-angle twisted bilayer MoTe2 by combining the local electronic compressibility and magneto-optical measurements. At hole filling factor ν = 1 and 2/3, the system is incompressible and spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. We show that they are integer and fractional Chern insulators, respectively, from the dispersion of the state in the filling factor with an applied magnetic field. We further demonstrate electric-field-tuned topological phase transitions involving the Chern insulators. Our findings pave the way for the demonstration of quantized fractional Hall conductance and anyonic excitation and braiding17 in semiconductor moiré materials.

Signatures of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states in twisted MoTe2

The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topology can result in exotic quantum states of matter. A celebrated example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, which exhibits an integer quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field owing to intrinsic ferromagnetism1-3. In the presence of strong electron-electron interactions, fractional QAH (FQAH) states at zero magnetic field can emerge4-8. These states could host fractional excitations, including non-Abelian anyons-crucial building blocks for topological quantum computation9. Here we report experimental signatures of FQAH states in a twisted molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) bilayer. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal robust ferromagnetic states at fractionally hole-filled moiré minibands. Using trion photoluminescence as a sensor10, we obtain a Landau fan diagram showing linear shifts in carrier densities corresponding to filling factor v = -2/3 and v = -3/5 ferromagnetic states with applied magnetic field. These shifts match the Streda formula dispersion of FQAH states with fractionally quantized Hall conductance of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. Moreover, the v = -1 state exhibits a dispersion corresponding to Chern number -1, consistent with the predicted QAH state11-14. In comparison, several non-ferromagnetic states on the electron-doping side do not disperse, that is, they are trivial correlated insulators. The observed topological states can be electrically driven into topologically trivial states. Our findings provide evidence of the long-sought FQAH states, demonstrating MoTe2 moiré superlattices as a platform for exploring fractional excitations.

Manipulating Topological Phases in Magnetic Topological Insulators

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) are a group of materials that feature topological band structures with concurrent magnetism, which can offer new opportunities for technological advancements in various applications, such as spintronics and quantum computing. The combination of topology and magnetism introduces a rich spectrum of topological phases in MTIs, which can be controllably manipulated by tuning material parameters such as doping profiles, interfacial proximity effect, or external conditions such as pressure and electric field. In this paper, we first review the mainstream MTI material platforms where the quantum anomalous Hall effect can be achieved, along with other exotic topological phases in MTIs. We then focus on highlighting recent developments in modulating topological properties in MTI with finite-size limit, pressure, electric field, and magnetic proximity effect. The manipulation of topological phases in MTIs provides an exciting avenue for advancing both fundamental research and practical applications. As this field continues to develop, further investigations into the interplay between topology and magnetism in MTIs will undoubtedly pave the way for innovative breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of topological physics as well as practical applications.

An anisotropic van der Waals dielectric for symmetry engineering in functionalized heterointerfaces

Van der Waals dielectrics are fundamental materials for condensed matter physics and advanced electronic applications. Most dielectrics host isotropic structures in crystalline or amorphous forms, and only a few studies have considered the role of anisotropic crystal symmetry in dielectrics as a delicate way to tune electronic properties of channel materials. Here, we demonstrate a layered anisotropic dielectric, SiP2, with non-symmorphic twofold-rotational C2 symmetry as a gate medium which can break the original threefold-rotational C3 symmetry of MoS2 to achieve unexpected linearly-polarized photoluminescence and anisotropic second harmonic generation at SiP2/MoS2 interfaces. In contrast to the isotropic behavior of pristine MoS2, a large conductance anisotropy with an anisotropy index up to 1000 can be achieved and modulated in SiP2-gated MoS2 transistors. Theoretical calculations reveal that the anisotropic moiré potential at such interfaces is responsible for the giant anisotropic conductance and optical response. Our results provide a strategy for generating exotic functionalities at dielectric/semiconductor interfaces via symmetry engineering.

Simulating Chern insulators on a superconducting quantum processor

The quantum Hall effect, fundamental in modern condensed matter physics, continuously inspires new theories and predicts emergent phases of matter. Here we experimentally demonstrate three types of Chern insulators with synthetic dimensions on a programable 30-qubit-ladder superconducting processor. We directly measure the band structures of the 2D Chern insulator along synthetic dimensions with various configurations of Aubry-André-Harper chains and observe dynamical localisation of edge excitations. With these two signatures of topology, our experiments implement the bulk-edge correspondence in the synthetic 2D Chern insulator. Moreover, we simulate two different bilayer Chern insulators on the ladder-type superconducting processor. With the same and opposite periodically modulated on-site potentials for two coupled chains, we simulate topologically nontrivial edge states with zero Hall conductivity and a Chern insulator with higher Chern numbers, respectively. Our work shows the potential of using superconducting qubits for investigating different intriguing topological phases of quantum matter.

Intrinsic Nonlinear Hall Effect and Gate-Switchable Berry Curvature Sliding in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Though the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and nonlocal transport response reveals nontrivial band topology governed by the Berry curvature in twisted bilayer graphene, some recent works reported nonlinear Hall signals in graphene superlattices that are caused by the extrinsic disorder scattering rather than the intrinsic Berry curvature dipole moment. In this Letter, we report a Berry curvature dipole induced intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in high-quality twisted bilayer graphene devices. We also find that the application of the displacement field substantially changes the direction and amplitude of the nonlinear Hall voltages, as a result of a field-induced sliding of the Berry curvature hotspots. Our Letter not only proves that the Berry curvature dipole could play a dominant role in generating the intrinsic nonlinear Hall signal in graphene superlattices with low disorder densities, but also demonstrates twisted bilayer graphene to be a sensitive and fine-tunable platform for second harmonic generation and rectification.

Chemical Potential Characterization of Symmetry-Breaking Phases in a Rhombohedral Trilayer Graphene

Rhombohedral trilayer graphene has recently emerged as a natural flat-band platform for studying interaction-driven symmetry-breaking phases. The displacement field (D) can further flatten the band to enhance the density of states, thereby controlling the electronic correlation that tips the energy balance between spin and valley degrees of freedom. To characterize the energy competition, chemical potential measurement─a direct thermodynamic probe of Fermi surfaces─is highly demanding to be conducted under a constant D. In this work, we characterize D-dependent isospin flavor polarization, where electronic states with isospin degeneracies of one and two can be identified. We also developed a method to measure the chemical potential at a fixed D, allowing for the extraction of energy variation during phase transitions. Furthermore, symmetry breaking could also be invoked in Landau levels, manifesting as quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Our work opens more opportunities for the thermodynamic characterization of displacement-field tuned van der Waals heterostructures.

Magnetic Field-Stabilized Wigner Crystal States in a Graphene Moiré Superlattice

ABC-stacked trilayer graphene on boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moiré superlattices provides a tunable platform for exploring Wigner crystal states in which the electron correlation can be controlled by electric and magnetic fields. Here we report the observation of magnetic field-stabilized Wigner crystal states in a ABC-TLG/hBN. We show that correlated insulating states emerge at multiple fractional and integer fillings corresponding to ν = 1/3, 2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3, and 2 electrons per moiré lattice site under a magnetic field. These correlated insulating states can be attributed to generalized Mott states for the integer fillings and generalized Wigner crystal states for the fractional fillings. The generalized Wigner crystal states are stabilized by a vertical magnetic field and are strongest at one magnetic flux quantum per three moiré superlattices. The ν = 2 insulating state persists up to 30 T, which can be described by a Mott-Hofstadter transition at a high magnetic field.

Mixing of moiré-surface and bulk states in graphite

Van der Waals assembly enables the design of electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) materials, often by superimposing a long-wavelength periodic potential on a crystal lattice using moiré superlattices1-9. This twistronics approach has resulted in numerous previously undescribed physics, including strong correlations and superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene10-12, resonant excitons, charge ordering and Wigner crystallization in transition-metal chalcogenide moiré structures13-18 and Hofstadter's butterfly spectra and Brown-Zak quantum oscillations in graphene superlattices19-22. Moreover, twistronics has been used to modify near-surface states at the interface between van der Waals crystals23,24. Here we show that electronic states in three-dimensional (3D) crystals such as graphite can be tuned by a superlattice potential occurring at the interface with another crystal-namely, crystallographically aligned hexagonal boron nitride. This alignment results in several Lifshitz transitions and Brown-Zak oscillations arising from near-surface states, whereas, in high magnetic fields, fractal states of Hofstadter's butterfly draw deep into the bulk of graphite. Our work shows a way in which 3D spectra can be controlled using the approach of 2D twistronics.

Controlled alignment of supermoiré lattice in double-aligned graphene heterostructures

The supermoiré lattice, built by stacking two moiré patterns, provides a platform for creating flat mini-bands and studying electron correlations. An ultimate challenge in assembling a graphene supermoiré lattice is in the deterministic control of its rotational alignment, which is made highly aleatory due to the random nature of the edge chirality and crystal symmetry. Employing the so-called "golden rule of three", here we present an experimental strategy to overcome this challenge and realize the controlled alignment of double-aligned hBN/graphene/hBN supermoiré lattice, where the twist angles between graphene and top/bottom hBN are both close to zero. Remarkably, we find that the crystallographic edge of neighboring graphite can be used to better guide the stacking alignment, as demonstrated by the controlled production of 20 moiré samples with an accuracy better than ~ 0.2°. Finally, we extend our technique to low-angle twisted bilayer graphene and ABC-stacked trilayer graphene, providing a strategy for flat-band engineering in these moiré materials.

Junctions and Superconducting Symmetry in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Junctions provide a wealth of information on the symmetry of the order parameter of superconductors. We analyze junctions between a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and superconducting twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and TBG Josephson junctions (JJs). We compare superconducting phases that are even or odd under valley exchange (s- or f-wave). The critical current in mixed (s and f) JJs strongly depends on the angle between the junction and the lattice. In STM-TBG junctions, due to Andreev reflection, the f-wave leads to a prominent peak in subgap conductance, as seen in experiments.

Anomalous Interfacial Electron-Transfer Kinetics in Twisted Trilayer Graphene Caused by Layer-Specific Localization

Interfacial electron-transfer (ET) reactions underpin the interconversion of electrical and chemical energy. It is known that the electronic state of electrodes strongly influences ET rates because of differences in the electronic density of states (DOS) across metals, semimetals, and semiconductors. Here, by controlling interlayer twists in well-defined trilayer graphene moirés, we show that ET rates are strikingly dependent on electronic localization in each atomic layer and not the overall DOS. The large degree of tunability inherent to moiré electrodes leads to local ET kinetics that range over 3 orders of magnitude across different constructions of only three atomic layers, even exceeding rates at bulk metals. Our results demonstrate that beyond the ensemble DOS, electronic localization is critical in facilitating interfacial ET, with implications for understanding the origin of high interfacial reactivity typically exhibited by defects at electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

Quantum oscillations in field-induced correlated insulators of a moiré superlattice

We report an observation of quantum oscillations (QOs) in the correlated insulators with valley anisotropy of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). The anomalous QOs are best captured in the magneto resistivity oscillations of the insulators at v = -2, with a period of 1/B and an oscillation amplitude as high as 150 kΩ. The QOs can survive up to ∼10 K, and above 12 K, the insulating behaviors are dominant. The QOs of the insulator are strongly D dependent: the carrier density extracted from the 1/B periodicity decreases almost linearly with D from -0.7 to -1.1 V/nm, suggesting a reduced Fermi surface; the effective mass from Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis depends nonlinearly on D, reaching a minimal value of 0.1 me at D = ∼ -1.0 V/nm. Similar observations of QOs are also found at v = 2, as well as in other devices without graphite gate. We interpret the D sensitive QOs of the correlated insulators in the picture of band inversion. By reconstructing an inverted band model with the measured effective mass and Fermi surface, the density of state at the gap, calculated from thermal broadened Landau levels, agrees qualitatively with the observed QOs in the insulators. While more theoretical understandings are needed in the future to fully account for the anomalous QOs in this moiré system, our study suggests that TDBG is an excellent platform to discover exotic phases where correlation and topology are at play.

Enhanced Layer-Breathing Modes in van der Waals Heterostructures Based on Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The characterization of interlayer coupling in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) is essential to understand their quantum behaviors and structural functionalities. Interlayer shear and layer-breathing (LB) phonons carry rich information on interlayer interaction, but they are usually too weak to be detected via standard Raman spectroscopy due to the weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Here, we report a universal strategy to enhance LB modes of vdWHs based on twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG). In both tBLG/hBN and tBLG/MoS₂ vdWHs, the resonantly excited electrons in tBLG can strongly couple to LB phonons extended over the entire layers in the vdWHs, whose resonance condition is tunable by the twist angle of tBLG. In vdWHs containing twisted graphene layers with multiple twisted interfaces, the EPC of LB phonons coming from the collective LB vibrations of entire heterostructure layers can be tuned by resonant excitation of programmable van Hove singularities according to each twisted interface. The universality and tunability of enhanced LB phonons by tBLG make it a promising method to investigate EPC and interlayer interaction in related vdWHs.

Localization-enhanced moiré exciton in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterotrilayer superlattices

The stacking of twisted two-dimensional (2D) layered materials has led to the creation of moiré superlattices, which have become a new platform for the study of quantum optics. The strong coupling of moiré superlattices can result in flat minibands that boost electronic interactions and generate interesting strongly correlated states, including unconventional superconductivity, Mott insulating states, and moiré excitons. However, the impact of adjusting and localizing moiré excitons in Van der Waals heterostructures has yet to be explored experimentally. Here, we present experimental evidence of the localization-enhanced moiré excitons in the twisted WSe₂/WS₂/WSe₂ heterotrilayer with type-II band alignments. At low temperatures, we observed multiple excitons splitting in the twisted WSe₂/WS₂/WSe₂ heterotrilayer, which is manifested as multiple sharp emission lines, in stark contrast to the moiré excitonic behavior of the twisted WSe₂/WS₂ heterobilayer (which has a linewidth 4 times wider). This is due to the enhancement of the two moiré potentials in the twisted heterotrilayer, enabling highly localized moiré excitons at the interface. The confinement effect of moiré potential on moiré excitons is further demonstrated by changes in temperature, laser power, and valley polarization. Our findings offer a new approach for localizing moiré excitons in twist-angle heterostructures, which has the potential for the development of coherent quantum light emitters.

Topological and Stacked Flat Bands in Bilayer Graphene with a Superlattice Potential

We show that bilayer graphene in the presence of a 2D superlattice potential provides a highly tunable setup that can realize a variety of flat band phenomena. We focus on two regimes: (i) topological flat bands with nonzero Chern numbers, C, including bands with higher Chern numbers |C|>1 and (ii) an unprecedented phase consisting of a stack of nearly perfect flat bands with C=0. For realistic values of the potential and superlattice periodicity, this stack can span nearly 100 meV, encompassing nearly all of the low-energy spectrum. We further show that in the topological regime, the topological flat band has a favorable band geometry for realizing a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) and use exact diagonalization to show that the FCI is in fact the ground state at 1/3 filling. Our results provide a realistic guide for future experiments to realize a new platform for flat band phenomena.

High-Order Fractal Quantum Oscillations in Graphene/BN Superlattices in the Extreme Doping Limit

Recent studies of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures and superlattices have shown intriguing quantum phenomena, but these have been largely explored only in the moderate carrier density regime. Here, we report the probe of high-temperature fractal Brown-Zak (BZ) quantum oscillations through magnetotransport in the extreme doping regimes by applying a newly developed electron beam doping technique. This technique gives access to both ultrahigh electron and hole densities beyond the dielectric breakdown limit in graphene/BN superlattices, enabling the observation of nonmonotonic carrier-density dependence of fractal BZ states and up to fourth-order fractal BZ features despite strong electron-hole asymmetry. Theoretical tight-binding simulations qualitatively reproduce all observed fractal BZ features and attribute the nonmonotonic dependence to the weakening of superlattice effects at high carrier densities.
