Abstract
Background Lymphocyte to C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) is an emerging inflammatory biomarker, but its association with prognosis in individuals with congestive heart failure (CHF) remains unclear. We sought to evaluate the relationship between LCR and cardiovascular (CV) and all-cause mortality in individuals diagnosed with CHF. Methods We included 718 CHF individuals, using NHANES 1999-2010 data. ROC curves were used to compare the prognostic value of LCR, C-reactive protein, and lymphocyte counts for 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year CV and all-cause mortality risk. The population was divided into 4 groups based on the value of LCR according to the quartile. Prognosis analysis utilized the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox-regression analysis while accounting for NHANES recommended weights. Results Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated a significantly worse prognosis in the low LCR group compared to the high LCR group (log-rank test; p < 0.001). For 3-year CV mortality, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios [95 % confidence interval] for LCR quartiles (Q 2,3,4 vs Q 1) were 0.43 (0.21-0.87), 0.38 (0.13-1.07), 0.34 (0.13-0.88), (P for trend = 0.033). For 3-year all-cause mortality, aHRs were 0.36 (0.22-0.60), 0.51 (0.29-0.89), 0.35 (0.18-0.64), (P for trend = 0.002). Similar findings were observed for 5- and 10-year CV and all-cause mortality. Conclusions Elevated LCR emerged as an independent prognostic factor for CV and all-cause mortality in individuals with CHF. Moreover, the implementation of anti-inflammatory therapy exhibits the potential to improve outcomes for decreased LCR patients with CHF.

Abstract
Background We conducted a large-scale epidemiological analysis to investigate the associations between systemic inflammation markers and heart failure (HF). Our aim is to identify potential biomarkers for early detection of HF. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We investigated the associations between five systemic inflammation markers (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio [NLR], platelet to lymphocyte ratio [PLR], systemic immune inflammation index [SII], system inflammation response index [SIRI], and aggregate index of systemic inflammation [AISI]) and the risk of HF. Results The prevalence rates of HF exhibited a gradual increase across increasing logNLR, logPLR, logSII, logSIRI, and logAISI tertiles. Compared to those in the highest tertiles of logNLR, logSII, logSIRI, and logAISI had a 1.579-fold, 1.341-fold, 1.956-fold, and 1.499-fold increased risk of HF compared to those in the lowest tertile respectively. Conversely, there was no significant correlation between logPLR and HF risk among subjects in the highest tertile. The restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis revealed a non-linear relationship between the elevation of systemic inflammation markers and HF prevalence. Specifically, a per standard deviation increase in any of these variables is associated with a respective 45%, 29%, 28%, 44% and 29% increase in HF prevalence. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis demonstrated favorable sensitivity and specificity of these systemic inflammation markers in detecting the presence of HF. Conclusion Our cross-sectional study demonstrates significant positive correlations between the NLR, PLR, SII, SIRI, and AISI with the incidence of HF.

Abstract
AIM Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple biomarkers that reflect systemic inflammation and are associated with adverse cardiovascular disease outcomes. The utility of NLR and PLR for risk prediction following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is not clear. METHOD We retrospectively analysed a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent TAVI at a tertiary hospital from 2009 to 2022. Baseline demographics, NLR, PLR and Society of Thoracic Surgeons Predicted Risk of Mortality (STS-PROM) scores were obtained. The 30-day and 1-year survival rates were analysed using a logistic regression model while overall survival was analysed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Predictors of survival were calculated using a Cox-hazards regression model and presented as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Overall, 367 patients were included in this study (mean age 84 years, 51% male). Median follow-up was 19 months (interquartile range 8.8-40 months) with a median survival of 7.2 years (interquartile range 3.5-10.3 years). NLR was associated with 30-day mortality (OR 1.75; 95% CI 1.25-2.68; p<0.01). PLRs marginally predicted 1-year mortality (OR 1.01; 95% CI 1.00-1.02). However, only the STS-PROM score significantly predicted overall survival (hazard ratio 1.07; 95% CI 1.02-1.12; p=0.03) after adjustment for NLR and PLR. CONCLUSIONS NLR is associated with 30-day mortality following TAVI. PLR was not a clinically significant predictor of mortality after TAVI. Only the STS-PROM score remained a significant predictor of overall survival.

Abstract
Background Heart failure (HF) and inflammation have a bidirectional relation leading to activation and adaptation of multiple cellular lines, including leucocyte subtypes and platelets. We aimed to assess and compare the predictive value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte (MLR) and platelet-lymphocyte (PLR) ratios for all-cause long-term mortality in HF. Methods This is an observational retrospective cohort study that included patients from the HI-HF cohort that survived the initial hospitalization. Vital status and survival time were assessed in June 2020. Results We analyzed 1018 HF patients with a mean age of 72.32 ± 10.29 years and 53.54 % women. All-cause long-term mortality was 38.21 % after a median follow-up time of 68 [38 - 82] months. NLR (AUC 0.667, 95 %CI 0.637 - 0.697), MLR (AUC 0.670, 95 %CI 0.640 - 0.700) and PLR (AUC 0.606, 95 %CI 0.574 - 0.636) were predictors of all-cause mortality. In multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis, NLR≥3.56 was the only hematological index independent predictor of fatality (HR 1.36, 95 %CI 1.05 - 1.76). Conclusions Of the three hematological indices, NLR was the only independent predictor of all-cause long-term mortality of HF patients. We suggest NLR≥3.56 as an auxiliary prognostic biomarker for the evaluation of HF patients.

Abstract
Systemic immune inflammation index (SII) is a global parameter that comprehensively reflects body inflammation, this study aims to assess the correlation between this index and erectile dysfunction (ED). This cross-sectional study incorporated 164 ED patients and 95 healthy adult males. The collection of general demographic information and pertinent hematological data from the participants enabled the computation of corresponding SII values. Statistical analysis, encompassing descriptive statistics as well as normality and logistic regression analyses, was carried out employing SPSS version 26. The findings of the univariate analysis revealed a noteworthy distinction in triglyceride levels (TG) (P = 0.017) and SII (P < 0.001) between ED patients and the healthy population. Subsequent multivariate logistic regression analysis unveiled a significant association between SII (odd ratio (OR):1.012, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.008-1.015; P < 0.001) and the occurrence of ED. Since the impact value is not clearly visible, SII/100 is utilized to magnify the effect value one hundredfold. The regression analysis results indicate that the OR value of SII/100 is 3.171, and the 95% CI is 2.339-4.298 (P < 0.001). The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis ascertained an AUC of 0.863 (P < 0.001) for SII, with a determined cut-off value of 391.53(109/L), exhibiting a sensitivity of 81.7% and specificity of 83.2%. Moreover, when comparing patients with varying degrees of ED severity, both univariate (P < 0.001) and subsequent multivariate logistic regression analyses (OR: 1.007, 95% CI: 1.004-1.010; P < 0.001) underscored the significance of the SII value. At this point, SII/100 OR: 1.971, 95% CI: 1.508-2.576 (P < 0.001). The ROC curve analysis in this context demonstrated an AUC of 0.799 (P < 0.001), with a determined cut-off value of 746.63(109/L), featuring a sensitivity of 60.6% and specificity of 91.6%. These discerned outcomes affirm a correlation between SII and ED, establishing its potential not only in predicting the onset of ED but also in differentiating among various levels of ED severity.

Abstract
Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) is a glycoprotein mainly expressed by type II pneumocytes and recently known as a lung injury biomarker. However, the number of studies is still limited, especially in Indonesian COVID-19 populations. Therefore, we aim to provide correlation, sensitivity, and specificity analyses of KL-6 and other biomarkers in Indonesian COVID-19 severity and mortality. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving adult COVID-19 patients at Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, between March 26, 2021, and August 25, 2021. KL-6 and other biomarker levels were compared according to severity (severe versus non-severe) and mortality (non-survivor versus survivor). We also included the receiver operating characteristic analysis to define the optimal cut-off, sensitivity, and specificity of KL-6 to determine COVID-19 severity and mortality. We enrolled 78 COVID- 19 patients (23 non-survivors), including 39 non-severe and 39 severe patients. There was no significant difference in serum KL-6 levels, neither in severity nor mortality groups. KL-6 had the strongest positive correlations with ferritin in severe patients (r=0.313) and non-survivors (r=0.467). We observed that the best sensitivity was KL-6 combined with platelet-to- lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (0.818) in severe patients and with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR)/PLR/ferritin/C-reactive protein (0.867) in non-survivors. In contrast, the best specificity was found when KL-6 was combined with NLR/D-dimer (0.750) in severe patients and with D-dimer (0.889) in non-survivors. Serum KL-6 is a useful auxiliary laboratory evaluation index for COVID-19 lung injury to depict its severity and mortality.

Abstract
Background To date, no studies have investigated the association between red blood cell distribution width (RDW)-to-platelet ratio (RPR) and readmission rates among patients with heart failure (HF). As such, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between RPR and readmission rates in patients with HF. Methods Data for this study were obtained from the Fourth People's Hospital (Zigong, Sichuan Province, China). Patients were diagnosed with HF in accordance with European Society of Cardiology criteria. The primary outcome was the 28-day readmission rate. Various logistic regression models were constructed to explore the association between RPR and the 28-day readmission rate. Results The study comprised 1978 patients with HF, with a 28-day readmission rate of 6.98%. RPR emerged as an independent risk factor for 28-day readmission, evidenced by consistent results across the various regression-adjusted models. The covariate-adjusted propensity score model demonstrated that every 0.1 increase in RPR was associated with an 8.2% increase in 28-day readmission rate (odds ratio [OR] 1.082 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.012-1.158]; P = 0.0212). Similarly, each 0.1 change in RPR was associated with a 9.8% (OR 1.098 [95% CI 1.014-1.188]) and 7.3% (OR 1.073 [95% CI 0.991-1.161]) increase in 3- and 6-month readmission rates, respectively. However, RPR was not statistically associated with the 6-month readmission rate. Curve fit plots illustrated a nonlinear positive correlation between RPR and 28-day, and 3- and 6-month readmissions. Moreover, the effects of RPR on 28-day, and 3- and 6-month readmission rates remained robust across subgroup variables in stratified analysis. Finally, the effect sizes of pooled multiply imputed data were consistent with the original data, suggesting robust results. Conclusion RPR was an independent risk factor for 28-day readmission among patients with HF and also demonstrated modest predictive value for readmissions at 3 and 6 months, despite being non-significant for the 6-month readmission rate. Early identification of patients with HF with elevated RPR would facilitate management and may confer favorable effects on prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) is a disease closely associated with inflammation, and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammatory marker. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between SII and HF. METHODS We used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 1998 to 2018 to include adults who reported a diagnosis of HF and complete information on the calculation of SII. SII was calculated as platelet count × neutrophil count/lymphocyte count. We used multiple logistic regression models to examine the association between SII and HF and explored possible influencing factors by subgroup analysis. In addition, we performed smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analysis to describe the nonlinear relationship. RESULTS The population-based study involved a total of 48,155 adults ages 20-85. Multivariate logistic regression showed that participants with the highest SII had a statistically significant 32% increased risk of HF prevalence compared to those with the lowest SII (OR = 1.32; 95% CI, 1.06-1.65, P = 0.0144) in a fully adjusted model. Subgroup analysis revealed no significant interactions between SII and specific subgroups (p > 0.05 for all interactions). Furthermore, the association between SII and HF was non-linear; the inflection point was 1104.78 (1000 cells/μl). CONCLUSIONS Based on our findings, elevated SII levels were found to be strongly associated with the risk of HF, and SII was nonlinearly associated with HF. To validate these findings, a larger prospective investigation is needed to support the results of this study and investigate potential problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation has been suggested to play a role in heart failure (HF) pathogenesis. However, the role of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), as a novel biomarker, to assess HF prognosis needs to be investigated. We sought to evaluate the impact of PLR on HF clinical outcomes. METHODS English-published records in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web-of-science databases were screened until December 2023. Relevant articles evaluated PLR with clinical outcomes (including mortality, rehospitalization, HF worsening, and HF detection) were recruited, with PLR difference analysis based on death/survival status in total and HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients. RESULTS In total, 21 articles (n = 13,924) were selected. The total mean age was 70.36 ± 12.88 years (males: 61.72%). Mean PLR was 165.54 [95% confidence interval (CI): 154.69-176.38]. In total, 18 articles (n = 10,084) reported mortality [either follow-up (PLR: 162.55, 95% CI: 149.35-175.75) or in-hospital (PLR: 192.83, 95% CI: 150.06-235.61) death rate] and the mean PLR was 166.68 (95% CI: 154.87-178.50). Further analysis revealed PLR was significantly lower in survived HF patients rather than deceased group (152.34, 95% CI: 134.01-170.68 versus 194.73, 95% CI: 175.60-213.85, standard mean difference: -0.592, 95% CI: -0.857 to -0.326, p < 0.001). A similar trend was observed for HFrEF patients. PLR failed to show any association with mortality risk (hazard ratio: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.99-1.05, p = 0.289). Analysis of other aforementioned outcomes was not possible due to the presence of few studies of interest. CONCLUSION PLR should be used with caution for prognosis assessment in HF sufferers and other studies are necessary to explore the exact association.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the potential prognostic role of the platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratio in patients presenting with suspected acute coronary syndromes (ACS). A systematic search of PubMed Central, Scopus, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from conception through 20 August 2023 was conducted. We used odds ratios (OR) as the effect measure with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dichotomous data and mean differences (MD) with a 95% CI for continuous data. If I2 was less than 50% or the p value of the Q tests was less than 0.05, a random synthesis analysis was conducted. Otherwise, a fixed pooled meta-analysis was performed. Nineteen studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. PLR was higher in MACE-positive (164.0 ± 68.6) than MACE-negative patients (115.3 ± 36.9; MD = 40.14; 95% CI: 22.76 to 57.52; p < 0.001). Pooled analysis showed that PLR was higher in AMI patients who died (183.3 ± 30.3), compared to survivors (126.2 ± 16.8; MD = 39.07; 95% CI: 13.30 to 64.84; p = 0.003). It was also higher in the ACS vs. control group (168.2 ± 81.1 vs. 131.9 ± 37.7; MD = 39.01; 95% CI: 2.81 to 75.21; p = 0.03), STEMI vs. NSTEMI cohort (165.5 ± 92.7 vs. 159.5 ± 87.8; MD = 5.98; 95% CI: -15.09 to 27.04; p = 0.58), and MI vs. UAP populations (162.4 ± 90.0 vs. 128.2 ± 64.9; MD = 18.28; 95% CI: -8.16 to 44.71; p = 0.18). Overall, our findings confirmed the potential prognostic role of the plate-let-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratio in patients presenting with suspected acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Its use as a risk stratification tool should be examined prospectively to define its capability for evaluation in cardiovascular patients.

Abstract
Elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis (EORA) is a distinct clinical entity defined as the onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in individuals aged over 60 years. EORA presents unique clinical features, including a more equitable distribution of sexes, a potential predilection for male involvement, a higher incidence of acute onset characterized by constitutional symptoms, a propensity for systemic manifestations, elevated sedimentation rates at disease onset, a reduced occurrence of rheumatoid factor positivity, increased titers of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies, a preference for involvement of large joints, elevated disease activity, the presence of bone erosions, and heightened patient disability. RA is recognized to consist of three partially overlapping subsets. One subset mirrors the classical RA clinical presentation, while the remaining subsets exhibit either a polymyalgia rheumatica-like phenotype or present with remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis accompanied by pitting edema syndrome. In the initial stages of EORA management, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are not typically the first-line treatment choice, because seniors are much more prone to develop side effects due to NSAIDs, and the use of NSAIDs is in reality contraindicated to the majority of seniors due to comorbidities. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), frequently methotrexate, are introduced immediately after the diagnosis is made. In cases where elderly patients demonstrate resistance to conventional DMARD therapy, the introduction of biological or targeted synthetic DMARDs becomes a viable treatment option. EORA presents a unique clinical profile, necessitating tailored treatment strategies. Our study emphasizes the challenges of NSAID use in seniors, highlighting the imperative shift toward DMARDs such as methotrexate. Future research should explore personalized DMARD approaches based on disease activity, comorbidities, and safety considerations, aiming to optimize treatment outcomes and minimize glucocorticoid reliance, thereby enhancing the quality of care for EORA patients.

Abstract
İntroduction: Systemic inflammation resulting from comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, diabetes, and obesity is responsible for the pathogenesis of myocardial structural and functional changes in heart failure. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are novel biomarkers of inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between blood NLR and PLR levels and one-year cardiac mortality in primary prevention patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤35%, using an intracardiac defibrillator. METHODS A total of 180 compensated heart failure patients with LVEF<35% (ischemic or nonischemic) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy for primary prevention who applied to the cardiology outpatient clinic of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit Üniversitesi Hospital, Zonguldak, Türkiye, between March 2018 and June 2019 were consecutively included. The patients were followed for one year after the application. RESULTS In the multivariate logistic regression analysis model, only NLR (OR: 1.328; 95%CI: 1.129-1.563; p <0.01) was found independently associated with the risk of one-year cardiovascular mortality. Based on the NLR, levels were 2.69 ng/ml, and the area under the curve was found to be 0.795 (95%CI: 0.729-0.862) in the evaluation made with the receiver operating characteristic curve. CONCLUSION High NLR ratio levels independently predicted one-year cardiac mortality in patients with LVEF<35% and ICD for secondary protection. Large-scale randomized studies are needed to fully demonstrate the relationship between NLR levels and cardiovascular mortality in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction and ICD.

Abstract
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is an important treatment option for hematologic malignancies. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in HSCTs and is related to worse outcomes. We aimed to create a predictive risk score for AKI in HSCT considering variables available at the time of the transplant. We performed a retrospective cohort study. AKI was defined by the KDIGO classification using creatinine and urinary output criteria. We used survival analysis with competing events. Continuous variables were dichotomized according to the Liu index. A multivariable analysis was performed with a backward stepwise regression. Harrel's C-Statistic was used to evaluate the performance of the model. Points were attributed considering the nearest integer of two times each covariate's hazard ratio. The Liu index was used to establish the optimal cut-off. We included 422 patients undergoing autologous (61.1%) or allogeneic (38.9%) HSCTs for multiple myeloma (33.9%), lymphoma (27.3%), and leukemia (38.8%). AKI cumulative incidence was 59.1%. Variables eligible for the final score were: hematopoietic cell transplant comorbidity index ≥2 (HR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.08-2.006; p = 0.013), chronic kidney disease (HR: 2.10, 95% CI: 1.31-3.36; p = 0.002), lymphoma or leukemia (HR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.26-2.25; p < 0.001) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio > 171.9 (HR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.10-1.86; p = 0.008). This is the first predictive risk score for AKI in patients undergoing HSCTs and the first study where the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio is independently associated with AKI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) continues to be the major cause of hospitalizations. Despite numerous significant therapeutic progress, the mortality rate of HF is still high. This longitudianl cohort study aimed to investigate the associations between hematologic inflammatory indices neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and all-cause mortality in community-dwelling adults with HF. METHODS Adults aged 20 and older with HF in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database 2005-2016 were included and were followed through the end of 2019. Univariate and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed to determine the associations between the three biomarkers and all-cause mortality. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to evaluate their predictive performance on mortality. RESULTS A total of 1,207 subjects with HF were included, representing a population of 4,606,246 adults in the US. The median follow-up duration was 66.0 months. After adjustment, the highest quartile of NPAR (aHR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.35, 2.43) and NLR (aHR = 1.59, 95%CI: 1.18, 2.15) were significantly associated with increased mortality risk compared to the lowest quartile during a median follow-up duration of 66.0 months. Elevated PLR was not associated with mortality risk. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of NPAR, NLR, and PLR in predicting deaths were 0.61 (95%CI: 0.58, 0.65), 0.64 (95%CI: 0.6, 0.67), and 0.58 (95%CI:0.55, 0.61), respectively. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, elevated NPAR and NLR but not PLR are independently associated with increased all-cause mortality among community-dwelling individuals with HF. However, the predictive performance of NPAR and NLR alone on mortality was low.

Abstract
Owing to the augmented perception of heart failure (HF) pathophysiology, management of the affected patients has been improved dramatically; as with the identification of the inflammatory background of HF, new avenues of HF prognosis research have been opened up. In this regard, relative values of hematologic indices were demonstrated by a growing body of evidence to successfully predict HF outcomes. Cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and easy obtainability of these relative values make them a precious option for the determination of HF prognosis; particularly in low-income developing countries. In this short review, we aimed to present the current literature on the predictability of these hematologic parameters for HF outcomes.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate blood cells and metabolites, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), digestibility, internal organs weight and histology, gene expression, and spleen cell proliferation of pre-weaned bull calves supplemented with a blend of essential oils in milk replacer (MR). Sixteen newborn Holstein × Gyr crossbred dairy bull calves, with body weight at birth of 33.3 ± 3.7 kg, were housed in individual sand bedded pens, blocked by genetic composition, and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments in a randomized complete block design: Control (CON, n = 8) and blend of essential oils supplementation (BEO, n = 8, 1 g/day/calf, Apex Calf, Adisseo, China). The commercial blend was composed by plant extracts derived from anise, cinnamon, garlic, rosemary, and thyme. Animals were fed 5 L of MR/day reconstituted at 15% (dry matter basis), divided into two equal meals. Water and starter were provided ad libitum. ß-hydroxybutyrate, urea, and glucose were evaluated weekly, IGF-1 was evaluated biweekly, and total blood cell count was performed every four weeks until the end of the trial at eight weeks of age. Feed samples were collected three times a week and polled for weekly analysis. Apparent total nutrient digestibility was determined from d 56 to 60 of age. On d 60 ± 1, animals were euthanized for organ weight, histology, spleen cell proliferation, and intestinal gene expression analysis. Data were analyzed independently using linear mixed models using the REML method in the nlme package in R for continuous outcomes. A non-parametric test was used for ordered categorical outcomes using the Artools package in R. There were no differences between groups for blood evaluations, digestibility, gene expression, and a spleen cell proliferation assay. However, BEO calves presented a heavier pancreas, heavier intestines, bigger ileum villi, and higher cecum butyrate levels (P < 0.05), demonstrating that the EO supplementation helped intestinal development and symbiotic bacteria. It was also observed in CON animals' heavier respiratory tract and a higher eosinophil count (P < 0.05). Therefore, the organs where eosinophils are more active had a better response for BEO animals. No differences were found in the intestinal gene expression in the immune context. These results demonstrate that supplementing essential oils in MR could contribute to gut development and immune function. However, more research is needed to understand its impact on body development and define the best dosage and route of administration.

Abstract
Introduction. Chronic inflammation plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of both arterial hypertension (HTN) and coronary artery disease (CAD), and is more pronounced in individuals with a non-dipper circadian blood pressure (BP) pattern. A non-dipping BP pattern is in turn is associated with increased cardiovascular morbi-mortality, and a higher risk of atherosclerotic events. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are readily available predictors of systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk. The purpose of our study is to evaluate whether NLR, MLR and PLR can be used as cost-effective predictors of a non-dipping blood pressure pattern in hypertensive patients with stable CAD. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional retrospective analysis that included 80 patients with hypertension and stable CAD (mean age 55.51 ± 11.83 years, 71.3% male) referred to a cardiovascular rehabilitation center. All patients underwent clinical examination, 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and standard blood analysis. Results: Baseline demographic characteristics were similar in both groups. Patients with non-dipper pattern had significantly higher NLR (median = 2, IR (2–3), p < 0.001), MLR (median = 0.31, IR (0.23–0.39), p < 0.001) and PLR (median = 175, IR (144–215), p < 0.001) compared to dippers. Conclusion: Our results suggest that MLR and PLR are inexpensive and easily accessible biomarkers that predict a non-dipping pattern in hypertensive patients with stable CAD.

Abstract
Introduction. At the crossroads of heart failure (HF) and systemic inflammation, platelets and lymphocytes are both influenced as well as actively participating in the bidirectional relationship. The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) could therefore be a marker of severity. This review aimed to assess the role of PLR in HF. Methods. We searched the PubMed (MEDLINE) database using the keywords "platelet", "thrombocyte", "lymphocyte", "heart failure", "cardiomyopathy", "implantable cardioverter defibrillator", "cardiac resynchronization therapy" and "heart transplant". Results. We identified 320 records. 21 studies were included in this review, with a total of 17,060 patients. PLR was associated with age, HF severity, and comorbidity burden. Most studies reported the predictive power for all-cause mortality. Higher PLR was associated with in-hospital and short-term mortality in univariable analysis, however, it was not consistently an independent predictor for this outcome. PLR > 272.9 associated an adjusted HR of 3.22 (95%CI 1.56 - 5.68, p<0.001) for 30-day fatality. During long-term follow-up from 6 months to 5 years, PLR was an independent predictor of mortality in most studies, with cut-off values ranging from > 150 to > 194.97 and adjusted HR from 1.47 (95%CI 1.06 - 2.03, p=0.019) to 5.65 (95%CI 2.47-12.96, p<0.001). PLR > 173.09 had an adjusted OR 2.89 (95%CI 1.17-7.09, p=0.021) for predicting response to cardiac resynchronization therapy. PLR was not associated with outcomes after cardiac transplant or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Conclusion: Increased PLR could be an auxiliary biomarker of severity and survival prognosis in HF patients.

Abstract
Method This study is performed in the context of the Persian Registry of Cardiovascular Disease/Heart Failure (PROVE/HF). We included all patients admitted with ADHF regardless of the etiology of heart failure (HF). LOS was classified in tertiles (<4 days, >4 and <6 days, and >6 days). Our outcomes were 30-day all-cause mortality and rehospitalization. Baseline characteristics and outcomes are reported according to the tertiles of LOS. A binary logistic regression and cox regression analysis were performed to evaluate the association between LOS and rehospitalization and death, respectively. Results Between April 2019 and March 2020, 385 patients with ADHF were registered in our study. The mean length of hospitalization was 6.35 ± 5.46 days, varying from a minimum of 0 days to a maximum of 47 days. One hundred patients had a hospital stay lower than 4 days; 151 individuals had an intermediate LOS (4-6 days); and 134 were hospitalized for more than 6 days. Our analysis indicated no association between LOS and 30-day rehospitalization and death in multivariable or univariable models. Conclusion This study found no association between LOS and rehospitalization or death in patients admitted with ADHF; however, further investigations are warranted.

Abstract
Background Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are novel inflammation markers. Their combined usefulness for estimating the prognosis of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) admitted for acute decompensated heart failure remains elusive. Methods and Results We investigated 1026 patients registered in the Prospective Multicenter Observational Study of Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction. Both NLR and PLR values were measured at the time of admission. Comorbidity burden was defined as the number of occurrences of 8 common comorbidities of HFpEF. The primary end point was cardiac death. The patients were stratified into 3 groups based on the optimal cut-off values of NLR and PLR on the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for predicting cardiac death (low NLR and PLR, either high NLR or PLR, and both high NLR and PLR). After a median follow-up of 429 days, 195 patients died, with 85 of these deaths attributed to cardiac causes. An increased comorbidity burden was significantly associated with a higher proportion of patients with high NLR (>4.5) or PLR (>193), or both. High NLR and PLR values were independently associated with cardiac death, and a combination of both values was the strongest predictor (hazard ratio, 2.66 [95% CI, 1.51%-4.70%], P=0.0008). A significant difference was found in the rate of cardiac death among the 3 groups stratified by NLR and PLR values. Conclusions The combination of NLR and PLR is useful for the prediction of postdischarge cardiac death in patients with acute HFpEF. Abstract
Objective Inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of heart failure (HF). This study aimed to construct a nomogram based on systemic inflammatory markers and traditional prognostic factors to assess the risk of adverse outcomes (cardiovascular readmission and all-cause death) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods Data were retrospectively collected from patients with HF admitted to the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2018 to April 2020, and each patient had complete follow-up information. The follow-up duration was from June 2018 to May 31, 2022. 550 patients were included and randomly assigned to the derivation and validation cohorts with a ratio of 7:3, and prognostic risk factors of CHF were identified by Cox regression analysis. The nomogram chart scoring model was constructed. Results The Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that traditional prognostic factors such as age (P=0.011), BMI (P=0.048), NYHA classification (P<0.001), creatinine (P<0.001), and systemic inflammatory markers including LMR (P=0.001), and PLR (P=0.015) were independent prognostic factors for CHF patients. Integrated with traditional and inflammatory prognostic factors, a nomogram was established, which yielded a C-index value of 0.739 (95% CI: 0.714-0.764) in the derivation cohort and 0.713 (95% CI: 0.668-0.758) in the validation cohort, respectively. The calibration curves exhibited good performance of the nomogram in predicting the adverse outcomes for patients with CHF. In subgroups (HFrEF, HFmrEF, and HFpEF groups), the systematic inflammatory markers-based nomograms proved to be effective prediction tools for patients' adverse overcomes, as well. Conclusion The nomogram combining systemic inflammatory markers and traditional risk factors has satisfactory predictive performance for adverse outcomes (mortality and readmission) in patients with CHF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) causes significant morbidity today. Atherosclerosis is evident in the pathophysiological process in most patients, so PAD has similar risk factors as coronary artery disease. Platelet-Hemoglobin ratio (PHR) has been proven to predict mortality in atherosclerotic heart disease. We aimed to determine the relationship between PHR and below-knee amputation. METHODS The study is a single-center retrospective study. Platelet count/hemoglobin amount formula was used for PHR. Only PAD patients with below-knee critical extremity ischemia and unsuitable for revascularization were included in the study. RESULTS 235 patients were included in the study retrospectively. The mean age was 65.7 ± 9.9 years and 175(74.5%) of them were male. In the amputated group, white blood cell, neutrophil, platelet, creatinine, glucose, and PHR were higher (p = .031, p = .045, p = .011, p = .048 p = .018, p = .004, respectively). Only hemoglobin values were lower (p = .003). Multivariable regression analysis showed; age, albumin and PHR were determined as independent risk factors for amputation (Age; OR (95%CI): (1.094(1.040-1.152), p = .001) (Albumin; OR (95% CI): 1.950(1.623-1.799), p = .001) (PHR; OR (95% CI): 1.872(1.246-2.812), p = .003). Receiver operating characteristics analysis performed to determine the optimal cut-off value of PHR for amputation, the optimal value was found 2.08 (65.8% sensitivity, 67.5% specificity, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS PHR was a good predictor for BKA. Using the PHR, it may be possible to identify high-risk patients for amputation.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Functional capacity (FC) assessed via cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a novel, independent prognostic marker for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are two readily available predictors of systemic inflammation and cardiovascular event risk, which could be used as cost-effective predictors of poor FC. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of NLR and PLR in predicting poor FC in patients with CAD and recent elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Materials and Methods: Our cross-sectional retrospective analysis included 80 patients with stable CAD and recent elective PCI (mean age 55.51 ± 11.83 years, 71.3% male) who were referred to a cardiovascular rehabilitation center from January 2020 to June 2021. All patients underwent clinical examination, cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a cycle ergometer, transthoracic echocardiography and standard blood analysis. Results: Patients were classified according to percent predicted oxygen uptake (% VO2 max) in two groups—poor FC (≤70%, n = 35) and preserved FC (>70%, n = 45). There was no significant difference between groups regarding age, gender ratio, presence of associated comorbidities, left ventricular ejection fraction and NLR. PLR was higher in patients with poor FC (169.8 ± 59.3 vs. 137.4 ± 35.9, p = 0.003). A PLR cut-off point of 139 had 74% sensitivity and 60% specificity in predicting poor FC. After multivariate analysis, PLR remained a significant predictor of poor functional status. Conclusions: Although CPET is the gold standard test for assessing FC prior to cardiovascular rehabilitation, its availability remains limited. PLR, a cheap and simple test, could predict poor FC in patients with stable CAD and recent elective PCI and help prioritize referral for cardiovascular rehabilitation in high-risk patients.

Abstract
Lymphopenia (<1500/mm3) was associated with 82% higher mortality in heart failure patients irrespective of ejection fraction. Lymphopenia was a good predictor of all-cause readmission in heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction. Due to cost-effectiveness, easy availability, and ability to predict outcomes in the short-term and medium-term, lymphopenia can be a valuable tool in the mortality, readmission prediction model of heart failure.
Background There is renewed interest in pursuing frugal and readily available laboratory markers to predict mortality and readmission in heart failure. We aim to determine the relationship between absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure hospitalization. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with heart failure. Patients were divided into two groups based on ALC, less than or equal to 1500 cells/mm3 and > 1500 cells/ mm3. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. We did subgroup analysis based on ejection fraction and studied the association between ALC categories and clinical outcomes. Both ALC groups are matched by propensity score, outcomes were analyzed by Cox regression, and estimates are presented in hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results We included 1029 patients in the pre-matched cohort and 766 patients in the propensity-score matched cohort. The median age was 64 years (IQR, 54–75), and 60.78% were male. In the matched cohort, ALC less than or equal to 1500 cells/mm3 had a higher risk of mortality compared with ALC > 1500 cells/mm3 (HR 1.51, 95% CI: 1.17–1.95; P = 0.002). These results were reproducible in subgroups of heart failure. When ALC was divided into four groups based on their levels, the lowest group of ALC had the highest risk of mortality. Conclusions In patients with heart failure and both subgroups, ALC less than or equal to 1500 cells/mm3 had a higher risk of mortality. Patients in lower groups of the ALC categories had a higher risk of mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This was a retrospective study conducted at a rural referral center in East Java, Indonesia, to evaluate the association between the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on hospital admission and the incidence of new symptomatic heart failure (HF) within 6 months in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study population consisted of all ACS patients who were hospitalized between 1 January and 31 December 2018 at a non-percutaneous coronary intervention-capable secondary referral hospital and came for a routine follow-up until 6 months afterwards. The diagnosis of new symptomatic HF was based on International Classification of Diseases 10th revision code I50.9. RESULTS From 126 hospitalized patients, 92 patients were included in the analysis. The incidence rate of new symptomatic HF at 6 months was 70.65%. High PLR upon initial admission was significantly associated with new symptomatic HF incidence (odds ratio=1.70, P<0.001). PLR was also able to discriminate new symptomatic HF incidence at 6 months with area under the curve of 0.83 (P=0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that PLR was an independent predictor for new symptomatic HF incidence (hazard ratio=4.5, P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS In a rural center in Indonesia, the PLR was independently correlated with the onset of new symptomatic HF in patients with ACS 6 months after hospital admission. The PLR may be a supplementary biomarker for clinical outcomes in patients with ACS for use in resource-limited regions.

Abstract
A high platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has recently been associated with ischemic outcomes in cardiovascular disease. Increased platelet reactivity and leukocyte-platelet aggregate formation are directly involved in the progress of atherosclerosis and have been linked to ischemic events following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In order to understand the relation of PLR with platelet reactivity, we assessed PLR as well as agonist-inducible platelet aggregation and neutrophil-platelet aggregate (NPA) formation in 182 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients on dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and prasugrel (n = 96) or ticagrelor (n = 86) 3 days after PCI. PLR was calculated from the blood count. Platelet aggregation was measured by multiple electrode aggregometry and NPA formation was determined by flow cytometry, both in response to ADP and SFLLRN. A PLR ≥91 was considered as high PLR based on previous data showing an association of this threshold with adverse ischemic outcomes. In the overall cohort and in prasugrel-treated patients, high PLR was associated with higher SFLLRN-inducible platelet aggregation (67 AU [50-85 AU] vs 59.5 AU [44.3-71.3 AU], P = .01, and 73 AU [50-85 AU] vs 61.5 AU [46-69 AU], P = .02, respectively). Further, prasugrel-treated patients with high PLR exhibited higher ADP- (15% [11%-23%] vs 10.9% [7.6%-15.9%], P = .007) and SFLLRN-inducible NPA formation (64.3% [55.4%-73.8%] vs 53.8% [44.1%-70.1%], P = .01) as compared to patients with low PLR. These differences were not seen in ticagrelor-treated patients. In conclusion, high PLR is associated with increased on-treatment platelet reactivity in prasugrel-treated patients, but not in patients on ticagrelor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The platelet-to-hemoglobin ratio (PHR) has emerged as a prognostic biomarker in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients after PCI but not clear in CAD complicated with congestive heart failure (CHF). Hence, we aimed to assess the association between PHR and long-term all-cause mortality among CAD patients with CHF. METHODS Based on the registry at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital in China, we analyzed data of 2599 hospitalized patients who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) and were diagnosed with CAD complicated by CHF from January 2007 to December 2018. Low PHR was defined as ˂ 1.69 (group 1) and high PHR as ≥ 1.69 (group 2). Prognosis analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier method. To assess the association between PHR and long-term all-cause mortality, a Cox-regression model was fitted. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 5.2 (3.1-7.8) years, a total of 985 (37.9%) patients died. On the Kaplan-Meier analysis, patients in high PHR group had a worse prognosis than those in low PHR group (log-rank, p = 0.0011). After adjustment for confounders, high PHR was correlated with an increased risk of long-term all-cause mortality in CAD patients complicated with CHF. (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-1.52, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Elevated PHR is correlated with an increased risk of long-term all-cause mortality in CAD patients with CHF. These results indicate that PHR may be a useful prognostic biomarker for this population. Meanwhile, it is necessary to take effective preventive measures to regulate both hemoglobin levels and platelet counts in this population.

Abstract
Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is one of the most common emotional and mood disorders in stroke survivors. Several studies have suggested associations between PSF and various factors. However, they describe conflicting results. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting PSF. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 178 hospitalized stroke patients. The collected data were compared between the PSF and control groups. To evaluate the association between factors and PSF, regression analysis was conducted. A total of 96 patients (53.9%) were assigned to the PSF group, and 82 patients were assigned to the control group. Age, neurological deficits, cognitive dysfunction, degree of depression, hs-CRP, and ESR differed significantly between the two groups. For both types of stroke, multiple linear regression analyses showed that degree of depression and degree of inflammation were significantly associated with PSF. Through subgroup analysis, multiple linear regression analyses showed that the degree of depression in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in hemorrhagic stroke had a significant association with PSF. In conclusion, post-stroke depression and degree of inflammation could be clinically significant predictors of PSF in all types of stroke patients. However, larger, prospective studies are required to obtain more concrete results.

Abstract
Purpose: The present study aimed to clarify the potential predictive significance of Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in assessing the poor prognosis of critically ill patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Methods: Detailed clinical data were extracted from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care III database after gaining access and building the local platform. The 30- and 90-day and hospital all-cause mortalities of the patient was the primary outcome, and the readmission rate and the occurrence of major cardiovascular adverse events (MACEs) were the secondary outcomes. the Cox proportional hazard model and Logistic regression analysis were selected to reveal the relationship between SII level and the research outcome. Further, the propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to improve the reliability of results by reducing the imbalance across groups. Results: There were a total of 4,606 subjects who passed the screening process and entered the subsequent analysis. Multivariate regression analysis showed that after adjusting for possible confounders, including age, heart rate, and albumin, etc., the high level of SII was independently associated with 30- and 90-day and hospital mortalities (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: HR, 95% CIs: 1.23, 1.04-1.45; 1.21, 1.06-1.39; 1.26, 1.05-1.50) and the incidence of MACEs (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: OR, 95% CI: 1.39, 1.12-1.73) in critically ill patients with CHF, but no significant correlation was found between SII and the readmission rate. Consistently, patients with high SII level still presented a significantly higher short-term mortality than patients with low SII in the PSM subset. Conclusion: In critically ill patients with CHF, high level of SII could effectively predict high 30- and 90-day and hospital mortalities, as well as the high risk of occurrence of MACEs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adnexal torsion is an important gynecological emergency due to nonfrequent but possible adverse reproductive outcomes. There is no specific laboratory marker to support the preoperative diagnosis or that can be used clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic values of platelet, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and red cell markers as an early indicator of ovarian torsion. METHODS This retrospective study included 28 female patients who were treated surgically for adnexal torsion between August 2010 and July 2020, and 29 control group women. The demographic data and routine hematological values of patients were compared for adnexal torsion prediction. RESULTS There were no differences between the groups in terms of the platelet count, platelet distribution width, red cell distribution width, and mean platelet volume values, and there were no differences in the demographic data. Statistical differences were found among white blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio, and 81.5% sensitivity and 82.1% specificity were identified for neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio 2.45 (area under the curve AUC 0.892; 95%CI 0.808-0.975; p<0.001). Odds ratio for neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was 2.62 (95%CI 0.861-7.940, p=0.029). CONCLUSION According to the regression analysis, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was found to be the most beneficial among all blood count parameters for the pre-diagnosis of AT.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide. Recently, the role of inflammation in the progression of diseases has significantly attracted considerable attention. In addition, various comorbidities, including diabetes, obesity, etc. exacerbate inflammation in the cardiovascular system, which ultimately leads to heart failure. Furthermore, cytokines released from specialized immune cells are key mediators of cardiac inflammation. Here, in this review article, we focused on the role of selected immune cells and cytokines (both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory) in the regulation of cardiac inflammation and ultimately in cardiovascular diseases. While IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, and IFNγ are associated with cardiac inflammation; IL-10, TGFβ, etc. are associated with resolution of inflammation and cardiac repair. IL-10 reduces cardiovascular inflammation and protects the cardiovascular system via interaction with SMAD2, p53, HuR, miR-375 and miR-21 pathway. In addition, we also highlighted recent advancements in the management of cardiac inflammation, including clinical trials of anti-inflammatory molecules to alleviate cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Background Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is an inflammation index suggested to have the prognostic capability in heart failure (HF). We sought to investigate the association of PLR with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and creatinine (Cr) rise among Iranian individuals suffering from acute decompensated HF (ADHF). Methods This retrospective cohort study was in the context of the Persian Registry Of cardioVascular diseasE/Heart Failure (PROVE/HF) study. 405 individuals with ADHF admitted to the emergency department were recruited from April 2019 to March 2020. PLR was calculated by division of platelet to absolute lymphocyte counts and categorized based on quartiles. We utilized the Kaplan–Meier curve to show the difference in mortality based on PLR quartiles. Cr rise was defined as the increment of at least 0.3 mg/dl from baseline. Cox proportional hazard ratio (HR) was used to investigate the association of PLR with CVDs mortality. Results Mean age of participants was 65.9 ± 13.49 years (males: 67.7%). The mean follow-up duration was 4.26 ± 2.2 months. CVDs mortality or re-hospitalization was not significantly associated with PLR status. Multivariate analysis of PLR quartiles showed a minimally reduced likelihood of CVDs death in 2nd quartile versus the first one (HR 0.40, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.16–1.01, P = 0.054). Cr rise had no remarkable relation with PLR status in neither model. Conclusion PLR could not be used as an independent prognostic factor among ADHF patients. Several studies are required clarifying the exact utility of this index.

Abstract
AIM Vascular calcification is a common complication in CKD. Studies conducted in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) showed that calcification in vascular structures is an important component of the atherosclerosis process. GLA rich protein (GRP) has been suggested as a potential marker for vascular calcification. We investigated the relationship between GRP levels, carotid intima media thickness and inflammatory parameters in patients with predialysis stage 3, 4 and 5 CKD. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 106 patients aged ≥18 years with CKD stage 3, stage 4 and non-dialysis stage 5 and 25 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Patients with obesity, uncontrolled hypertension, coronary artery disease, with active cancer or liver disease, malignant hematologic disorders, acute renal failure, acute or chronic infections were excluded. As the control group, healthy volunteers without any known illness, regular drug use, smoking, alcohol use, and obesity were recruited. RESULTS Patients were divided into two groups as those with CIMT below 0.90 mm and those with CIMT 0.90 mm and above. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the presence of HT and DM. While the CRP values of the group with high CIMT were found to be significantly higher (p=0.005), the GLA rich protein levels of this group were found to be significantly higher (p=0.019). CONCLUSION In our study, it was determined that there was a positive correlation between GRP levels and CIMT in patients with predialysis CKD, and GRP levels were higher in patients with CIMT above 0.90 mm. These findings suggest that GRP levels can be used as a cardiovascular event biomarker in patients with CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is difficult to predict the complications and prognosis of ECMO, which is gaining widespread use in patients with pediatric surgery. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are emerging inflammatory markers that can be calculated from complete blood count, which is a cheap and easily accessible laboratory analysis. The ratios between cellular elements in peripheral blood have been demonstrated to provide information on inflammation, infection, and immune response. METHODS Sixty-seven patients who needed ECMO application after undergoing pediatric cardiovascular surgery in our clinic, between May 2005 and April 2020, were included in this study. The age of patients varied between 4 days and 17 years with a mean of 30.59 ± 147.26 months. RESULTS The relationships between PLR or NLR values and various blood parameters and blood gas results were found to be statistically nonsignificant in our group of pediatric ECMO recipients. Even if the effect of PLR and NLR values on mortality and prognosis is statistically nonsignificant in patients who need ECMO after congenital heart surgery, PLR and NLR are typically elevated in the postoperative period. An increase in these values above a certain threshold may be a statistically significant indicator for the prediction of mortality. CONCLUSIONS There are few studies in the literature concerning PLR and NLR values in patients with pediatric heart surgery. We consider this study will make way for new studies in the future.

Abstract
The incidence of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has brought daunting complications for people as well as physicians around the world. An ever-increasing number of studies investigating the characteristics of the disease, day by day, is shedding light on a new feature of the virus with the hope that eventually these efforts lead to the proper treatment. SARS-CoV-2 activates antiviral immune responses, but in addition may overproduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, causing uncontrolled inflammatory responses in patients with severe COVID-19. This condition may lead to lymphopenia and lymphocyte dysfunction, which in turn, predispose patients to further infections, septic shock, and severe multiple organ dysfunction. Therefore, accurate knowledge in this issue is important to guide clinical management of the disease and the development of new therapeutic strategies in patients with COVID-19. In this review, we provide a piece of valuable information about the alteration of each subtype of lymphocytes and important prognostic factors associated with these cells. Moreover, through discussing the lymphopenia pathophysiology and debating some of the most recent lymphocyte- or lymphopenia-related treatment strategies in COVID-19 patients, we tried to brightening the foreseeable future for COVID-19 patients, especially those with severe disease.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have shown that inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been reported as a novel inflammatory marker. However, it is not clear whether PLR is associated with short‐term all‐cause mortality in critically ill patients with non‐ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Methods The data for the study is from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database. The primary outcome in our study was 28‐day mortality. Kapan‐Meier curve, lowess smoother curve, and multivariate Cox regression models were used to determine whether the association between PLR and 28‐day mortality of critically ill patients with NSTEMI. Results A total of 1273 critically ill patients with NSTEMI were included in this analysis. Kapan‐Meier curve and lowess smoother curve show that high PLR is associated with an increased risk of 28‐day all‐cause mortality. The study population is divided into two groups according to the cut‐off value of PLR level. In the Cox model, high PLR levels (PLR≥195.8) were significantly associated with increased 28‐day mortality (HR 1.54; 95%CI 1.09–2.18, p = .013). In quartile analyses, the HR (95% CI) for the third (183 ≤ PLR < 306) and fourth quartile (PLR≥306) was 1.55 (1.05–2.29) and 1.61 (1.03–2.52), respectively, compared to the reference group(111 ≤ PLR < 183). In subgroup analyses, there is no interaction effect in most of the subgroups except for respiratory failure and vasopressor use. Conclusion High PLR is associated with an increased risk of short‐term mortality in critically ill patients with NSTEMI.

Abstract
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm characterized by an abnormal proliferation of clonal, terminally differentiated B lymphocytes. Current approaches for the treatment of MM focus on developing new diagnostic techniques; however, the search for prognostic markers is also crucial. This enables the classification of patients into risk groups and, thus, the selection of the most optimal treatment method. Particular attention should be paid to the possible use of immune factors, as the immune system plays a key role in the formation and course of MM. In this review, we focus on characterizing the components of the immune system that are of prognostic value in MM patients, in order to facilitate the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) occurs more often in elderly individuals. Elderly onset RA (EORA) (onset > 60 years) encompasses a specific subset of patients if compared with young onset RA (YORA) (onset at a younger age). There is a need to define reliable, simple markers to properly assess the inflammatory activity of RA. Hematological markers of systemic inflammation (Platelet-To-Lymphocyte (PLR) and Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte (NLR) ratios) are novel measures of the inflammatory response. The goal of the study was to analyze the course of EORA vs. YORA patients and to assess associations between systemic and clinical disease activity markers, including PLR and NLR, in different subsets of patients. PLR and NLR have not previously been assessed in EORA and YORA. METHODS The study group consisted of 113 consecutive patients (63 EORA and 50 YORA). The following assessments were performed: joint counts, Disease Activity Score (DAS28), complete blood cell counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS EORA was characterized by significantly higher disease activity markers (conventional inflammatory and clinical), a lower rate of remission or low disease activity, and less frequent use of biological drugs and glucocorticoids. The NLR and PLR were positively correlated with disease activity markers. The PLR was significantly lower in EORA compared with in YORA. CONCLUSION EORA and YORA patients differed significantly. In EORA, conventional disease activity markers were higher, the PLR was significantly lower.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the relationship of novel inflammatory markers neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) development and requirement for laser photocoagulation (LP) treatment. METHODS The charts of infants screened for ROP were reviewed retrospectively, and 120 newborns who had complete blood count (CBC) data in the first 24 hours after delivery (early period) and between 35 and 37th gestational weeks (late period) were included. Study population consisted of 34 infants who required LP for ROP treatment, 52 newborns with ROP that regressed without treatment, and 34 controls who did not developed any ROP stages. Demographics, etiological factors and CBC data including NLR and PLR values were noted. Risk factors for ROP development and treatment requirement were investigated using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Significantly lower NLR was found in ROP cases compared to non-ROP group during late period (p = 0.003), while there was no difference in NLR during early period (p = 0.298). No significant difference was observed in PLR during both early and late periods (p = 0.230 and p = 0.349, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed daily weight gain as major risk factor for ROP development (p = 0.001; OR: 0.870, 95% CI: 0.799-0.947), and hyperbilirubinemia as an independent risk factor for LP requirement (p = 0.045; OR: 0.204, 95% CI: 0.043-0.966). CONCLUSION NLR or PLR does not appear to be predictive risk factors for treatment requirement in cases with ROP. CBC values during first 24 h of life may be misleading; therefore, a late period CBC is recommended to evaluate prognostic factors for ROP development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that chronic inflammation contributes to the development of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Some hematologic parameters have also been linked to the prognosis of SSNHL. However, the prognostic value of such hematological factors is not conclusive. This study explored the association of routine hematological parameters with SSNHL. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase to identify eligible studies. Standardized mean deviation (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were retried from relevant studies for analysis. Heterogeneity, subgroup, and publication bias analyses were performed. RESULTS A total of 18 studies involving 1505 SSNHL patients and 1466 healthy persons were enrolled in the final analysis. The study population included 699 responders and 458 non-responders to treatment. Pooled results revealed that the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) value in the SSNHL patient group were higher than in the healthy group (SMD = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.86,1.24, p < 0.001, SMD = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.26,0.78, p < 0.001, respectively). However, there was no significant difference in the mean platelet volumes (MPV) between the groups (SMD = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.49, p = 0.91). Notably, NLR and PLR values were evidently higher in the unrecovered group than in the recovered group (SMD = -0.63, 95% CI: 1.02, -0.23, p = 0.002, SMD = -0.4, 95% CI: 0.76, -0.03, p = 0.03, respectively). However, the MPV value was similar in both groups (SMD = -0.35, 95% CI: 1.14,0.44, p = 0.38). CONCLUSIONS Our results show that NLR and PLR values can predict the onset and prognosis of SSNHL.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: COVID-19 is a global pandemic. In our study, we aimed to utilize the hematological parameters in predicting the prognosis and mortality in COVID-19 patients. Materials and methods: A retrospective, observational study was conducted to include all the admitted patients (n = 191) having COVID-19 Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive, and evaluated those for prognosis and disease outcome by utilizing several biochemical and hematological markers. Results: Amongst the patients admitted in the ward versus in the intensive care unit (ICU), there were significant differences in mean hemoglobin (P = 0.003), total leukocyte count (P = 0.001), absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte counts (P < 0.001), absolute monocyte count (P = 0.019), Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte ratio (LMR) (P < 0.001), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and Lymphocyte-to C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) (P = 0.002), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (P < 0.001). Amongst the deceased patients, there was significant leukocytosis (P = 0.008), neutrophilia and lymphopenia (P < 0.001), increased NLR (P = 0.001), decreased LMR (P < 0.001), increased PLR (p = 0.017), decreased LCR (p = 0.003), and elevated CRP level (P < 0.001). A receiver operating characteristic curve obtained for the above parameters showed NLR (AUC: 0.841, PPV: 83.6%) and PLR (AUC: 0.703, PPV: 81.8%) for ICU patients, while NLR (AUC: 0.860, PPV: 91.1%) and PLR (AUC: 0.677, PPV: 87.5%) for the deceased patients had significant accuracy for predicting the disease severity of COVID-19 in comparison to survivors. Conclusion: The inflammatory markers and hematological indices are a good guide for predicting the severity and disease outcome of coronavirus disease. NLR and PLR are elevated in severe disease while LMR and LCR are inversely correlating with disease severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been studied so far as prognostic factors of cardiovascular diseases. Their role interplayed with endothelial inflammation has emerged as optimal predictors for major cardiovascular disease events and prognostic factors for post-procedural outcomes. METHODS A review of the current literature was undertaken to investigate the relationship between NLR and PLR with percutaneous, cardiac surgery, and vascular surgery procedures. RESULTS Our findings show that perioperative NLR and PLR levels are significantly correlated with patient morbidity and mortality rates. CONCLUSION These biomarkers have several attractive characteristics, as they are inexpensive and quickly available, and they can contribute to the early identification of patients at high risk for periprocedural adverse events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Graves disease (GD) and the toxic phase of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) have similar clinical and biochemical presentations, and differentiating them requires sophisticated investigations. Since thyroid hormones have been noted to affect all hematologic cell lines, we have used the platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR)-an index usually utilized in inflammatory or malignant disorders-to compare patients with and without thyrotoxicosis and to analyze its use in distinguishing between patients with GD and SAT prior to therapy. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Endocrinology, Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. During the study period, 800 patients with features of thyrotoxicosis visited the outpatient clinic. Those who had thyroid radioiodine (131I) uptake (RAIU) study and complete blood count (CBC) at diagnosis were included (N = 500). Based on the RAIU values, these were divided as GD (n = 354) and SAT (n = 146). Baseline characteristics, thyroid function tests, and components of the CBC and PLR were obtained. The data were compared with a group of 250 matched euthyroid controls. Analyses were performed using SPSS version 21.0 software. RESULTS PLR showed significant reductions in both GD and SAT patients when compared to euthyroid controls (P = .01), with greater reductions seen in GD than SAT (74.5 ± 19 vs. 84.4 ± 26; P = .01). Using receiver operating characteristic analysis of PLR, an optimal PLR cut-off of 70.4 was found to differentiate GD from SAT with a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 74%. CONCLUSION PLR can be used as a novel surrogate marker to differentiate between patients with GD and SAT prior to therapy, especially in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine whether platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is associated with 5-year mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), we performed this study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) through 1999 to 2006. METHODS 3285 patients with CKD stage 1-5 were included. Patients' baseline characteristics were collected. Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate the association of PLR with 5-year mortality including all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Subgroup analysis was performed. RESULTS Within 5 years following the date of the NHANES 1999 to 2006 survey participation, 655 (19.94%) deaths were recorded and 207 patients died from cardiovascular disease. A J-shaped association between PLR and 5-year mortality was observed. In adjusted model 2, the elevated PLR Z-score was not significantly associated with a decreased 5-year all-cause mortality risk (HR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.16-1.22) when PLR Z-score < - 0.91 whereas the elevated PLR Z-score was significantly associated with an increased 5-year all-cause mortality risk (HR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01-1.17) when PLR Z-score ≥ - 0.91. In adjusted model 2, neither the elevated PLR Z-score was significantly associated with a decreased 5-year cardiovascular mortality risk (HR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.36-2.04) when PLR Z-score < - 0.47 nor the elevated PLR Z-score was significantly associated with an increased 5-year cardiovascular mortality risk (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.93-1.34) when PLR Z-score ≥ - 0.47. CONCLUSION The elevated PLR is independently associated with an increased 5-year all-cause mortality risk among patients with CKD stage 1-5 when PLR ≥ 83.18, indicating that PLR might be a potential biomarker to predict 5-year all-cause mortality in CKD patients.

Abstract
Several markers and prognostic scores have been identified for predicting the development and progression of liver disease; among them, haematological parameters (the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), RDW to platelet ratio (RPR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV)) have recently gained significant interest. Compared with traditional prognostic factors, haematological indices are easy to obtain and relatively inexpensive. There is growing evidence that these haematological indices play a key role in HBV-related liver diseases and has been proposed as a predictive marker of adverse outcomes in these patients. This article focuses on discussing the diagnostic and prognostic value of the haematological indices in patients with HBV-related liver diseases.

Abstract
Objectives: The Endocrine and Metabolic Responses on Overtraining Syndrome (EROS) study identified multiple hormonal and metabolic conditioning processes in athletes, and underlying mechanisms and biomarkers of overtraining syndrome (OTS). The present study's objective was to reveal independent predictors and linear correlations among the parameters evaluated in the EROS study to predict clinical, metabolic, and biochemical behaviors in healthy and OTS-affected male athletes. Methods: We used multivariate linear regression and linear correlation to analyze possible combinations of the 38 parameters evaluated in the EROS study that revealed significant differences between healthy and OTS-affected athletes. Results: The testosterone-to-estradiol (T:E) ratio predicted the measured-to-predicted basal metabolic rate (BMR) ratio; the T:E ratio and total testosterone level were inversely predicted by fat mass and estradiol was not predicted by any of the non-modifiable parameters. Early and late growth hormone, cortisol, and prolactin responses to an insulin tolerance test (ITT) were strongly correlated. Hormonal responses to the ITT were positively correlated with fat oxidation, predicted-to-measured BMR ratio, muscle mass, and vigor, and inversely correlated with fat mass and fatigue. Salivary cortisol 30 min after awakening and the T:E ratio were inversely correlated with fatigue. Tension was inversely correlated with libido and directly correlated with body fat. The predicted-to-measured BMR ratio was correlated with muscle mass and body water, while fat oxidation was directly correlated with muscle mass and inversely correlated with fat mass. Muscle mass was directly correlated with body water, and extracellular water was directly correlated with body fat and inversely correlated with body water and muscle mass. Conclusions: Hypothalamic-pituitary responses to stimulation were diffuse and indistinguishable between the different axes. A late hormonal response to stimulation, increased cortisol after awakening, and the T:E ratio were correlated with vigor and fatigue. The T:E ratio was also correlated with body metabolism and composition, testosterone was predicted by fat mass, and estradiol predicted anger. Hydration status was inversely correlated with edema, and inter-correlations were found among fat oxidation, hydration, and body fat.
