Abstract
Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a major stroke consequence that has a severe impact on patients' quality of life and survival rate. For this reason, it is especially crucial to identify and intervene early in high-risk groups during the acute phase of stroke. Currently, there are no reliable and efficient techniques for the early diagnosis, appropriate evaluation, or prognostication of PSCI. Instead, plenty of biomarkers in stroke patients have progressively been linked to cognitive impairment in recent years. High-throughput omics techniques that generate large amounts of data and process it to a high quality have been used to screen and identify biomarkers of PSCI in order to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the disease. These techniques include metabolomics, which explores dynamic changes in the organism, gut microbiomics, which studies host-microbe interactions, genomics, which elucidates deeper disease mechanisms, transcriptomics and proteomics, which describe gene expression and regulation. We looked through electronic databases like PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and common databases for each omics to find biomarkers that might be connected to the pathophysiology of PSCI. As all, we found 34 studies: 14 in the field of metabolomics, 5 in the field of gut microbiomics, 5 in the field of genomics, 4 in the field of transcriptomics, and 7 in the field of proteomics. We discovered that neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis may be the primary causes of PSCI development, and that metabolomics may play a role in the molecular mechanisms of PSCI. In this study, we summarized the existing issues across omics technologies and discuss the latest discoveries of PSCI biomarkers in the context of omics, with the goal of investigating the molecular causes of post-stroke cognitive impairment. We also discuss the potential therapeutic utility of omics platforms for PSCI mechanisms, diagnosis, and intervention in order to promote the area's advancement towards precision PSCI treatment.

Abstract
Subclinical endometritis affects reproductive outcomes and causes economic losses in dairy cows, thus, it is important to understand disease progression mechanisms and develop diagnostic procedures for better disease management. We measured the levels of 146 lipid mediators in uterine flush samples using lipid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We detected 25 lipid mediators in the uterine flush of both the control and subclinical endometritis cows; 15 of the 25 lipid mediators were AA-derived metabolites. Among the AA-derived metabolites, cyclooxygenase (COX)-generated mediators were the most abundant. Specifically, levels of 11β-13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin (PG) F2α, PGE2, PGA2, 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid, and PGD1 were elevated in all the cows with subclinical endometritis. This study may provide new insights for the management of subclinical bovine endometritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation has become a critical pathological mechanism of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). NLRP3 is a critical inflammatory pathway to maintain the immune balance. Recently, preclinical evidence showed that Resolvin D1 might potentially offer a new option for antidepressant treatment due to its protective effects through the inhibition of neuroinflammation. However, whether they have clinical value in the diagnosis and treatment evaluation of adolescent depression was unclear. METHODS Forty-eight untreated first-episode adolescent patients with moderate to severe major depressive disorder, as well as 30 healthy adolescents (HCs, age and gender-matched), were enrolled for this study. Their ages ranged from 13 to 18 (15.75 ± 1.36) years. The patients were treated with fluoxetine for 6-8 weeks. HDRS-17 was used to evaluate the severity of depressive symptoms. Venous blood samples were collected at baseline for the two groups and at the time-point of post-antidepressant treatment for the patients. Serum concentrations of RvD1, NLRP3, IL-1β, IL-18, and IL-4 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) pre- and post-fluoxetine treatment. RESULTS Serum levels of RvD1 and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 were significantly elevated in adolescents with MDD compared to healthy adolescents, but no significant difference in NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18 between the two groups. Meanwhile, RvD1 (positively) and IL-4 (negatively) were correlated with the severity of symptoms (HDRS-17 scores) after adjusting age, gender, and BMI. Interestingly, fluoxetine treatment significantly reduced the serum levels of RvD1, NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18 in MDD adolescents but increased the levels of IL-4 relative to baseline. Furthermore, we observed that serum levels of RvD1 might be an excellent distinguishing indicator for depression and healthy adolescents. CONCLUSIONS Our study is the first to compare RvD1 and NLRP3 between adolescent MDD and HCs. Our findings of reactive increase of RvD1 in adolescent MDD comprised a novel and critical contribution. Our results showed the presence of inflammation resolution unbalanced in adolescents with MDD and indicated that RvD1 might be an ideal biomarker for diagnosing and treating adolescent MDD.

Abstract
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) prevalence is rising and can lead to detrimental health outcomes such as Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and cancer. Recent studies have indicated that Cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) is an anti-obesity CYP in humans and mice. Cyp2b-null mice are diet-induced obese, and human CYP2B6-transgenic (hCYP2B6-Tg) mice reverse the obesity or diabetes progression, but with increased liver triglyceride accumulation in association with an increase of several oxylipins. Notably, 9-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (9-HODE) produced from linoleic acid (LA, 18:2, ω-6) is the most prominent of these and 9-hydroxyoctadecatrienoic acid (9-HOTrE) from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3, ω-3) is the most preferentially produced when controlling for substrate concentrations in vitro. Transactivation assays indicate that 9-HODE and 9-HOTrE activate PPARα and PPARγ. In Seahorse assays performed in HepG2 cells, 9-HOTrE increased spare respiratory capacity, slightly decreased palmitate metabolism, and increased non-glycolytic acidification in a manner consistent with slightly increased glutamine utilization; however, 9-HODE exhibited no effect on metabolism. Both compounds increased triglyceride and pyruvate concentrations, most strongly by 9-HOTrE, consistent with increased spare respiratory capacity. qPCR analysis revealed several perturbations in fatty acid uptake and metabolism gene expression. 9-HODE increased expression of CD36, FASN, PPARγ, and FoxA2 that are involved in lipid uptake and production. 9-HOTrE decreased ANGPTL4 expression and increased FASN expression consistent with increased fatty acid uptake, fatty acid production, and AMPK activation. Our findings support the hypothesis that 9-HODE and 9-HOTrE promote steatosis, but through different mechanisms as 9-HODE is directly involved in fatty acid uptake and synthesis; 9-HOTrE weakly inhibits mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism while increasing glutamine use.

Abstract
Introduction Pre-hypertension is a prevalent condition among the adult population worldwide. It is characterized by asymptomatic elevations in blood pressure beyond normal levels but not yet reaching the threshold for hypertension. If left uncontrolled, pre-hypertension can progress to hypertension, thereby increasing the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and others. Objective The precise mechanisms driving the progression of hypertension remain unknown. Thus, identifying the metabolic changes associated with this condition can provide valuable insights into potential markers or pathways implicated in the development of hypertension. Methods In this study, we utilized untargeted metabolomics profiling, which examines over 1,000 metabolites to identify novel metabolites contributing to the progression from pre-hypertension to hypertension. Data were collected from 323 participants through Qatar Biobank. Results By comparing metabolic profiles between pre-hypertensive, hypertensive and normotensive individuals, six metabolites including stearidonate, hexadecadienoate, N6-carbamoylthreonyladenosine, 9 and 13-S-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (HODE), 2,3-dihydroxy-5-methylthio- 4-pentenoate (DMTPA), and linolenate were found to be associated with increased risk of hypertension, in both discovery and validation cohorts. Moreover, these metabolites showed a significant diagnostic performance with area under curve >0.7. Conclusion These findings suggest possible biomarkers that can predict the risk of progression from pre-hypertension to hypertension. This will aid in early detection, diagnosis, and management of this disease as well as its associated complications.

Abstract
Blood metabolomics profiling using mass spectrometry has emerged as a powerful approach for investigating non-cancer diseases and understanding their underlying metabolic alterations. Blood, as a readily accessible physiological fluid, contains a diverse repertoire of metabolites derived from various physiological systems. Mass spectrometry offers a universal and precise analytical platform for the comprehensive analysis of blood metabolites, encompassing proteins, lipids, peptides, glycans, and immunoglobulins. In this comprehensive review, we present an overview of the research landscape in mass spectrometry-based blood metabolomics profiling. While the field of metabolomics research is primarily focused on cancer, this review specifically highlights studies related to non-cancer diseases, aiming to bring attention to valuable research that often remains overshadowed. Employing natural language processing methods, we processed 507 articles to provide insights into the application of metabolomic studies for specific diseases and physiological systems. The review encompasses a wide range of non-cancer diseases, with emphasis on cardiovascular disease, reproductive disease, diabetes, inflammation, and immunodeficiency states. By analyzing blood samples, researchers gain valuable insights into the metabolic perturbations associated with these diseases, potentially leading to the identification of novel biomarkers and the development of personalized therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview of various mass spectrometry approaches utilized in blood metabolomics research, including GC-MS, LC-MS, and others discussing their advantages and limitations. To enhance the scope, we propose including recent review articles supporting the applicability of GC×GC-MS for metabolomics-based studies. This addition will contribute to a more exhaustive understanding of the available analytical techniques. The Integration of mass spectrometry-based blood profiling into clinical practice holds promise for improving disease diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and patient outcomes. By unraveling the complex metabolic alterations associated with non-cancer diseases, researchers and healthcare professionals can pave the way for precision medicine and personalized therapeutic interventions. Continuous advancements in mass spectrometry technology and data analysis methods will further enhance the potential of blood metabolomics profiling in non-cancer diseases, facilitating its translation from the laboratory to routine clinical application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal diseases are identified as autoimmune phenomena attributed to a specific virus that binds to the mucosal epithelium. The importance of precise diagnostic processes and identification is emphasized, but the multifaceted and complex etiological factors pose challenges for effective treatment. A recent supplementary study suggested a linkage between the secretion of calprotectin, a protein associated with inflammatory processes, and increased levels of hydroxyeicosatrienoic acids (HETE) and hydroxyoctadecadienoic (HODE) compounds. METHODS Sixty-two patients (average age: 14.06 ± 2.93 years) suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases were included in this study. Comparative analyses were performed to assess the concentrations of calprotectin against the levels of arachidonic acid derivatives. The calprotectin concentration was determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The derivatives of HETE and HODE were identified through liquid chromatography. RESULTS Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) displayed higher average concentrations of fatty acid metabolites; however, no correlation with calprotectin was observed. A dependency of 12S HETE concentration relative to age was noted in the CD group, and a similar trend was also identified in ulcerative colitis (UC), with the significant metabolites being 15 HETE and 5 oxoETE. In UC patients, a positive correlation was established between the calprotectin concentration and the acids 5-HETE and 12-HETE. CONCLUSIONS These findings may be instrumental for monitoring the inflammatory states of patients and indicating a pathway for intervention. The metabolite 16RS HETE is associated with UC activity, and 15-HETE is related to the disease's duration. A relatively more significant role of HETE acids in the progression of the disease was observed in UC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnancy is a physiological state during which inflammation occurs. This complex biological response is necessary for the implantation process as well as delivery. In turn, its suppression during gestation favors the normal course of the pregnancy. Therefore, the presence of pro-resolving mediators, EPA and DHA derivatives, The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the levels of anti-inflammatory resolvins and their precursors in different trimesters of pregnancy with consideration of the women's weight, including overweight and obese women before pregnancy. METHODS A total of 78 women participated in this study; the mean age and BMI before pregnancy were 32.3 ± 5.52 and 27.73 ± 6.13, respectively. The patients were divided into two groups, considering their BMI before pregnancy. The extraction of eicosanoids was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. The levels of all studied parameters showed statistically significant differences between the study group (SG) and the control group (CG) in the different trimesters of pregnancy. Over the course of pregnancy, the levels of protection (PDX), maresin, resolvins (RvD1, RvE1), and their precursors differed in relation to the trimester of pregnancy and the division into groups considering the correct body weight before pregnancy. RESULTS Overweight or obese women had significantly lower levels of RvE1 in the third trimester and their precursors compared to normal-weight women. While the levels of PDX and RvD1 were significantly higher, this may be due to both a lower intake of products rich in omega-3 fatty acids by obese women and an increased need of obese women's bodies to quench chronic inflammatory processes associated with obesity. CONCLUSIONS Both EPA and DHA derivatives are involved in calming down inflammation during pregnancy, which was observed.

Abstract
Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Maxim. leaves (ESL) are widely used to treat ischemic stroke (IS); however, the specific mechanism remains unclear. The microbiota-gut-brain axis plays a critical role in IS and has become a potential therapeutic target. This study aimed to reveal and verify the therapeutic effect of ESL on IS through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry-based untargeted/targeted metabolomics combined with 16S rRNA microbiota sequencing strategy were used to investigate the regulatory effect of ESL on the metabolism and intestinal microenvironment after IS. Lactobacillus reuteri and Clostridium butyricum were used to treat rats with IS to verify that elevated levels of probiotics are key factors in the therapeutic effect of ESL. The results showed that IS significantly altered the accumulation of 41 biomarkers, while ESL restored their concentrations back to normal. Moreover, ESL alleviated the dysbiosis of gut microbiota brought on by IS, by reducing the abundance of pathogens and increasing the abundance of probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus reuteri and Clostridium butyricum); this could reduce post-stroke injury, thereby having a certain protective effect on IS. This study reveals that ESL plays an important role in treating IS through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, maintaining metabolic homeostasis in vivo.

Abstract
Ischemic cerebral stroke is a severe medical condition that affects about 15 million people every year and is the second leading cause of death and disability globally. Ischemic stroke results in neuronal cell death and neurological impairment. Current therapies may not adequately address the deleterious metabolic changes and may increase neurological damage. Oxygen and nutrient depletion along with the tissue damage result in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, including the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR), and neuroinflammation in the affected area and cause cell death in the lesion core. The spatio-temporal production of lipid mediators, either pro-inflammatory or pro-resolving, decides the course and outcome of stroke. The modulation of the UPR as well as the resolution of inflammation promotes post-stroke cellular viability and neuroprotection. However, studies about the interplay between the UPR and bioactive lipid mediators remain elusive and this review gives insights about the crosstalk between lipid mediators and the UPR in ischemic stroke. Overall, the treatment of ischemic stroke is often inadequate due to lack of effective drugs, thus, this review will provide novel therapeutical strategies that could promote the functional recovery from ischemic stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnancy is a physiological state in which the female body undergoes a series of changes and adaptations to provide the best possible conditions for the growth and development of the forming baby. The internal adaptations that take place lead to the production of inflammation, which is necessary for the initial and final stages of pregnancy (embryo implantation and induction of labor). Gestational diabetes mellitus is considered to be the most common pathology during this period. However, many more serious health complications can arise, which include pre-eclampsia, fetal stunting, and preterm labor. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the levels of individual eicosanoids on the course of normal pregnancy and the possibility of pathologies including gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. METHODS Sixty-nine pregnant women who were overweight or obese before and during pregnancy were studied. Eicosanoids were extracted as appropriate and then determined using liquid chromatography. The levels of eicosanoids studied in pregnant women differed not only according to the week of pregnancy but also in relation to individual anthropometric and biochemical parameters. RESULTS There was a significant correlation between being overweight and having a high BMI before pregnancy-as well as biochemical parameters of lipid and carbohydrate profiles-and the occurrence of pathological conditions in pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS Eicosanoids are involved in the pathology of pregnancy associated with the occurrence of gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. Salicylic acid may find use in the treatment of pregnant women exposed to both phenomena, as well as in overweight and obese women found before pregnancy. Diets rich in natural salicylates, methods of administration, and pharmacotherapy and dosage need further study. Some of the mediators (lipoxin, prostaglandin and leucotrien) may be new diagnostic markers in pregnancy pathology and intervention pathways in the future.

Abstract
AIM To determine the relationship of lipoxin levels with inflammation and disease development in adults and children. METHODS We conducted a systematic review. The search strategy included Medline, Ovid, EMBASE, LILACS, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Open Gray. We included Clinical trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and cross-sectional studies. Animal experiments were excluded. RESULTS We included fourteen studies in this review, nine consistently showing decreased lipoxin levels and anti-inflammatory markers or increased pro-inflammatory markers in cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, periodontitis, or autism. Five studies showed increased lipoxin levels and pro-inflammatory markers in pre-eclampsia, asthma, and coronary disease. On the other hand, one showed increased lipoxin levels and decreased pro-inflammatory marker levels. CONCLUSIONS Decreases in lipoxins are associated with developing pathologies such as cardiovascular and neurological diseases, indicating that lipoxins protect against these pathologies. However, in other pathologies, such as asthma, pre-eclampsia, and periodontitis, which are associated with chronic inflammation despite increased levels of LXA4, the increase in inflammation suggests a possible failure of this regulatory pathway. Therefore, further studies are necessary to evaluate the role of LXA4 in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Background Resolvin D1 (RvD1) possesses anti-inflammatory properties and may be neuroprotective. This study was designed to ascertain the potential role of serum RvD1 in the evaluation of aSAH severity and prognosis of human aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods In this prospective observational study, serum RvD1 levels were measured in 123 patients with aSAH and in 123 healthy volunteers. Six-month neurological function was assessed using extended Glasgow outcome scale (GOSE). A prognostic prediction model was appraised using a series of evaluative tools, such as a nomogram, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, decision curve, calibration curve, restricted cubic spline, and Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit statistics. Results Serum RvD1 levels were markedly lower in patients than in controls (median, 0.54 versus 1.47 ng/mL; P<0.001). Serum RvD1 levels were independently correlated with Hunt-Hess scores (beta, -0.154; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.198--0.109; VIF, 1.769; P=0.001), modified Fisher scores (beta, -0.066; 95% CI, -0.125--0.006; VIF, 1.567; P=0.031) and 6-month GOSE scores (beta, 1.864; 95% CI, 0.759-2.970; VIF, 1.911; P=0.001) and were independently predictive of a poor prognosis (GOSE scores of 1-4) (odds ratio, 0.137; 95% CI, 0.023-0.817; P=0.029). Serum RvD1 levels significantly distinguished the risk of a worse prognosis, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.750 (95% CI, 0.664-0.824). Using the Youden method, serum RvD1 levels < 0.6 ng/mL was effective in predicting worse prognosis with 84.1% sensitivity and 62.0% specificity. Moreover, the model containing serum RvD1 levels, Hunt-Hess scores and modified Fisher scores was efficient, reliable and beneficial in prognostic prediction using a series of the afore-mentioned evaluative tools. Conclusion A decline in serum RvD1 levels following aSAH is closely correlated with illness severity and independently predicts a worse outcome in patients with aSAH, implying that serum RvD1, as a prognostic biomarker of aSAH, may be of clinical value in aSAH.

Abstract
Introduction Malnutrition is prevalent after stroke, particularly if post-stroke oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) reduces nutritional intake. To further understand stroke-related malnutrition, a thorough nutritional assessment was performed in ischemic stroke patients with or without OD during sub-acute inpatient rehabilitation. Methods In this exploratory, observational, cross-sectional, multi-center study in Germany (NTR6802), ischemic stroke patients with (N = 36) or without (N = 49) OD were age- and sex-matched to healthy reference subjects. Presence of (risk of) malnutrition (MNA-SF), blood concentration of stroke-relevant nutritional compounds and metabolites, nutritional intake, quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), and activities of daily living (Barthel index) were assessed. Results More than half of the stroke patients displayed (risk of) malnutrition, with higher prevalence in patient with OD vs. without OD. Fasted blood concentrations of vitamins B1, B2, B6, A, D, and E, selenium, choline, coenzyme Q10, albumin, pre-albumin, transferrin, docosahexaenoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid were all lower in stroke patients compared to their matched healthy reference subjects, irrespective of OD status. Reported energy, macronutrient, and water intake were lower in stroke patients vs. healthy reference subjects. As expected, quality of life and activities of daily living scores were lower in stroke vs. healthy reference subjects, with OD scoring worse than non-OD patients. Discussion This study shows that malnutrition is highly prevalent in sub-acute stroke patients during rehabilitation. Even though patients with OD were more likely to be malnourished, blood levels of specific nutritional compounds were similarly lower in stroke patients with or without OD compared to healthy reference subjects. Furthermore, subgroup analysis showed similarly lower blood levels of specific nutritional compounds in patients that are normal nourished vs. patients with (risk of) malnutrition. This might imply disease-specific changes in blood levels on top of overall protein-energy malnutrition. The results of the current study underline that it is important to screen for nutritional impairments in every stroke patient, either with or without OD.

Abstract
The main goal of our study was to determine the effect of cigarette smoking on selected derivatives of arachidonic acid, linoleic acid, DHA, and EPA, which may be markers of post-stroke inflammation. The eicosanoid profile was compared in both smoking and non-smoking patients, without division and with division into gender. In the group of non-smokers, we observed higher levels of the linolenic acid derivative (LA) 9S HODE (p ≤ 0.05) than in smokers. However, after dividing the results by sex, it turned out that the level of this derivative was higher in non-smoking women compared to smoking women (p ≤ 0.01) and did not differentiate the group of men. Similarly, the level of the arachidonic acid metabolite LTX A4 (p ≤ 0.05) differed only in the group of women. In this group, we also observed a decreased level of 15S HETE in smoking women, but it was statistically insignificant (p ≤ 0.08). On the other hand, the level of this derivative was statistically significantly higher in the group of non-smoking women compared to male non-smokers. The group of men was differentiated by two compounds: TXB2 and NPD1. Male smokers had an almost two-fold elevation of TXB2 (p ≤ 0.01) compared with non-smokers, and in this group, we also observed an increased level of NPD1 compared with male non-smokers. On the other hand, when comparing female non-smokers and male non-smokers, in addition to the difference in 15S HETE levels, we also observed elevated levels of TXB2 in the group of non-smokers. We also analyzed a number of statistically significant correlations between the analyzed groups. Generally, men and women smokers showed a much smaller amount of statistically significant correlations than non-smokers. We believe that this is related to the varying degrees of inflammation associated with acute ischemic stroke and post-stroke response. On the one hand, tobacco smoke inhibits the activity of enzymes responsible for the conversion of fatty acids, but on the other hand, it can cause the failure of the inflammatory system, which is also the body's defense mechanism. Smoking cigarettes is a factor that increases oxidative stress even before the occurrence of a stroke incident, and at the same time accelerates it and inhibits post-stroke repair mechanisms. This study highlights the effect of smoking on inflammation in both genders mediated by lipid mediators, which makes smoking cessation undeniable.

Abstract
This manuscript reviews the CYP-mediated production of oxylipins and the current known function of these diverse set of oxylipins with emphasis on the detoxification CYPs in families 1-3. Our knowledge of oxylipin function has greatly increased over the past 3-7 years with new theories on stability and function. This includes a significant amount of new information on oxylipins produced from linoleic acid (LA) and the omega-3 PUFA-derived oxylipins such as α-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the primary CYP responsible for producing specific oxylipins, and a lack of mechanistic insight for some clinical associations between outcomes and oxylipin levels. In addition, the role of CYPs in the production of oxylipins as signaling molecules for obesity, energy utilization, and development have increased greatly with potential interactions between diet, endocrinology, and pharmacology/toxicology due to nuclear receptor mediated CYP induction, CYP inhibition, and receptor interactions/crosstalk. The potential for diet-diet and diet-drug/chemical interactions is high given that these promiscuous CYPs metabolize a plethora of different endogenous and exogenous chemicals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a wide spectrum condition characterized by excessive liver fat accumulation in people who do not abuse alcohol. There is no effective medical treatment for NAFLD; therefore, most important recommendations to reduce liver steatosis are diet and lifestyle, including proper physical activity. The aim of our study was to analyze the fatty acids and eicosanoids changes in the serum of patients who consumed high-fiber rolls for 8 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS The group of 28 Caucasian participants was randomly divided into two groups, those who received 24 g of fiber/day-from 2 buns of 12 g each (n = 14), and those who received 12 g of fiber/day-from 2 buns of 6 g (n = 14). At the beginning and on the last visit of the 8-week intervention, all patients underwent NAFLD evaluation, biochemical parameter measurements, and fatty acids and eicosanoids evaluation. RESULTS Patients who received 12 g of fiber had significantly reduced liver steatosis and body mass index. In the group who received 24 g of fiber/day, we observed a trend to liver steatosis reduction (p = 0.07) and significant decrease in aspartate aminotransferase (p = 0.03) and total cholesterol (p = 0.03). All changes in fatty acid and eicosanoids profile were similar. Fatty acids analysis revealed that extra fiber intake was associated with a significant increase in monounsaturated fatty acids and decrease in saturated fatty acids. Moreover, both groups showed increased concentration of gamma linoleic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. We also observed reduction in prostaglandin E2. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that a high amount of fiber in the diet is associated with a reduction in fatty liver, although this effect was more pronounced in patients in the lower fiber group. However, regardless of the amount of fiber consumed, we observed significant changes in the profile of FAs, which may reflect the positive changes in the lipids liver metabolism. Regardless of the amount of fiber consumed, patients decreased the amount of PGE2, which may indicate the lack of disease progression associated with the development of inflammation.

Abstract
Potassium helps to maintain the water–electrolyte and acid–base balance. There is little research on the relationship between plasma fatty acids (FAs), inflammatory mediators and red blood cell potassium levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study included 38 Caucasian women with PCOS. Potassium in the erythrocytes was determined by inductively coupled atomic plasma emission spectrometry. The FAs were analysed with gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography was used to separate the eicosanoids. The relationships between the potassium content and the amounts of fatty acids, as well as potassium and arachidonic acid (AAs) derivatives, were analysed. Significant negative correlations were found with, among others, pentadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and arachidic acid, whereas a positive correlation was found with neuronic acid. Positive correlations were observed with 9, 13 HODE (derivatives synthetized from linolenic acid) and 5 oxo ETE and 5 HETE (from 5 LOX pathway). Saturated fatty acids reduce the influx of potassium into the cell by destabilizing the pH of the cytosol, and thus exacerbating the inflammatory response through the activation of the AA cascade. Therefore, improving the flow of potassium inside the cell is important in the treatment of patients.

Abstract
Background: This paper discusses the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of nondipping blood pressure and its role in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of free fatty acids (FAs) and their inflammatory metabolites on the nondipping phenomenon and the risk of sleep apnea in stroke patients. Methods: Sixty-four ischemic stroke patients were included in the prospective study. Group I consisted of 33 patients with a preserved physiological dipping effect (DIP), while group II included 31 patients with the nondipping phenomenon (NDIP). All subjects had FA gas chromatography and inflammatory metabolite measurements performed with the use of liquid chromatography, their 24 h blood pressure was recorded, and they were assessed with the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). Results: In the nondipping group a higher level of C16:0 palmitic acid was observed, while lower levels were observed in regard to C20:0 arachidic acid, C22:0 behenic acid and C24:1 nervonic acid. A decreased leukotriene B4 level was recorded in the nondipping group. None of the FAs and derivatives correlated with the ESS scale in the group of patients after stroke. Correlations were observed after dividing into the DIP and NDIP groups. In the DIP group, a higher score of ESS was correlated with numerous FAs and derivatives. Inflammation of a lower degree and a higher level of anti-inflammatory mediators from EPA and DHA acids favored the occurrence of the DIP. A high level of C18: 3n6 gamma linoleic acid indicating advanced inflammation, intensified the NDIP effect. Conclusions: We demonstrated potential novel associations between the FA levels and eicosanoids in the pathogenesis of the nondipping phenomenon. There are common connections between fatty acids, their metabolites, inflammation, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and nondipping in stroke patients.

Abstract
There is now a convincing body of evidence from observational studies that the majority of modifiable Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) risk factors are vascular in nature. In addition, the co-existence of cerebrovascular disease with AD is more common than AD alone, and conditions resulting in brain ischemia likely promote detrimental effects of AD pathology. Oxylipins are a class of bioactive lipid mediators derived from the oxidation of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which act as modulators of both vascular tone and inflammation. In vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), there is emerging evidence that oxylipins may have both protective and detrimental effects on brain structure, cognitive performance, and disease progression. In this review, we focus on oxylipin relationships with vascular and inflammatory risk factors in human studies and animal models pertinent to ADRD. In addition, we discuss future research directions with the potential to impact the trajectory of ADRD risk and disease progression.

Abstract
COVID-19 is characterised by a dysregulated immune response, that involves signalling lipids acting as mediators of the inflammatory process along the innate and adaptive phases. To promote understanding of the disease biochemistry and provide targets for intervention, we applied a range of LC-MS platforms to analyse over 100 plasma samples from patients with varying COVID-19 severity and with detailed clinical information on inflammatory responses (>30 immune markers). The second publication in a series reports the results of quantitative LC-MS/MS profiling of 63 small lipids including oxylipins, free fatty acids, and endocannabinoids. Compared to samples taken from ward patients, intensive care unit (ICU) patients had 2−4-fold lower levels of arachidonic acid (AA) and its cyclooxygenase-derived prostanoids, as well as lipoxygenase derivatives, exhibiting negative correlations with inflammation markers. The same derivatives showed 2−5-fold increases in recovering ward patients, in paired comparison to early hospitalisation. In contrast, ICU patients showed elevated levels of oxylipins derived from poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) by non-enzymatic peroxidation or activity of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), and these oxylipins positively correlated with markers of macrophage activation. The deficiency in AA enzymatic products and the lack of elevated intermediates of pro-resolving mediating lipids may result from the preference of alternative metabolic conversions rather than diminished stores of PUFA precursors. Supporting this, ICU patients showed 2-to-11-fold higher levels of linoleic acid (LA) and the corresponding fatty acyl glycerols of AA and LA, all strongly correlated with multiple markers of excessive immune response. Our results suggest that the altered oxylipin metabolism disrupts the expected shift from innate immune response to resolution of inflammation.

Abstract
BackgroundNeuroinflammatory response contributes to early neurological deterioration (END) and unfavorable long-term functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who recanalized successfully by endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), but there are no reliable biomarkers for their accurate prediction. Here, we sought to determine the temporal plasma profiles of the bioactive lipid mediators lipoxin A4 (LXA4), resolvin D1 (RvD1), and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) for their associations with clinical outcome.MethodsWe quantified levels of LXA4, RvD1, and LTB4 in blood samples retrospectively and longitudinally collected from consecutive AIS patients who underwent complete angiographic recanalization by EVT at admission (pre-EVT) and 24 hrs post-EVT. The primary outcome was unfavorable long-term functional outcome, defined as a 90-day modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6. Secondary outcome was END, defined as an increase in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≥4 points at 24 hrs post-EVT.ResultsEighty-one consecutive AIS patients and 20 healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Plasma levels of LXA4, RvD1, and LTB4 were significantly increased in post-EVT samples from AIS patients, as compared to those of healthy controls. END occurred in 17 (20.99%) patients, and 38 (46.91%) had unfavorable 90-day functional outcome. Multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrated that post-EVT levels of LXA4 (adjusted odd ratio [OR] 0.992, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.987-0.998), ΔLXA4 (adjusted OR 0.995, 95% CI 0.991-0.999), LTB4 (adjusted OR 1.003, 95% CI 1.001-1.005), ΔLTB4 (adjusted OR 1.004, 95% CI 1.002-1.006), and post-EVT LXA4/LTB4 (adjusted OR 0.023, 95% CI 0.001-0.433) and RvD1/LTB4 (adjusted OR 0.196, 95% CI 0.057-0.682) ratios independently predicted END, and post-EVT LXA4 levels (adjusted OR 0.995, 95% CI 0.992-0.999), ΔLXA4 levels (adjusted OR 0.996, 95% CI 0.993-0.999), and post-EVT LXA4/LTB4 ratio (adjusted OR 0.285, 95% CI 0.096-0.845) independently predicted unfavorable 90-day functional outcome. These were validated using receiver operating characteristic curve analyses.ConclusionsPlasma lipid mediators measured 24 hrs post-EVT were independent predictors for early and long-term outcomes. Further studies are needed to determine their causal-effect relationship, and whether the imbalance between anti-inflammatory/pro-resolving and pro-inflammatory lipid mediators could be a potential adjunct therapeutic target.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation and high blood pressure (nondipping profile) during the rest/sleep period have been associated with an effect on the incidence of cardiovascular disorders and a more severe course in the ischemic cerebrovascular event. There are no available data on the relationship between dipping status and the pro-inflammatory metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA); therefore, we undertook a study to investigate the influence of thromboxane on the incidence of nondipping among patients after stroke. METHODS Sixty-two patients with ischemic stroke (including 34 women and 28 men) were tested for the involvement of thromboxane in the nondipping phenomenon. Subjects were analyzed for the presence of the physiological phenomenon of dipping (DIP group) versus its absence-nondipping (NDIP group). Thromboxane (TX) measurements were performed using liquid chromatography, and blood pressure was measured 24 h a day in all subjects. RESULTS The analysis of the thromboxane level in the plasma of patients after ischemic stroke showed significant differences in terms of sex (p = 0.0004). Among women in both groups, the concentration of TX was high, while similar levels were observed in the group of men from the NDIP group. However, when comparing men in the DIP and NDIP groups, a lower TX level was noticeable in the DIP group. CONCLUSIONS A higher level of TX may be associated with a disturbance of the physiological phenomenon of DIP in men and women. However, in our opinion, TX is not the main determinant of the DIP phenomenon and, at the same time, other pro-inflammatory factors may also be involved in the occurrence of this singularity.

Abstract
Background: Crohn’s disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) are classified as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Currently, an increasing number of studies indicate that the metabolic consequences of IBD may include abnormalities in the fatty acid profile. The aim of this study was to compare fatty acid concentrations in IBD in order to identify differences between CD and UC and differences between the phases of both diseases. Methods: Sixty-three adolescent patients with CD (n = 33) and UC (n = 30) aged 13.66 ± 2.67 and 14.15 ± 3.31, respectively, were enrolled in the study. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography. Results: A statistically significant higher concentration of vaccenic acid was observed in the total UC group relative to total CD. In remission CD relative to active CD, a significantly higher concentration of palmitic acid was shown. Whereas in active CD, significantly higher levels of linoleic acid were observed relative to remission. The UC group had significantly higher lauric acid and gamma-linoleic acid levels in active disease relative to remission. Conclusions: The identified differences between FA levels in UC and CD could potentially be involved in the course of both diseases.

Abstract
Recently, an increase in the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been observed, especially among children and adolescents. Currently, few studies focus on the differentiation of inflammation in IBD subunits, i.e., Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of proinflammatory mediators of arachidonic acid (ARA) and linoleic acid (LA) in patients with CD (n = 34) and UC (n = 30), in order to identify differences in inflammation in both diseases and within the same entity, according to disease activity. Sixty-four adolescents with a mean age of 13.76 ± 2.69 and 14.15 ± 3.31, for CD and UC, respectively, were enrolled in the study. Biochemical analysis of ARA and LA derivatives was performed using a liquid chromatography. A trend was observed in the concentration of 15S-HETE (hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids) in CD relative to UC. The active phase of both diseases showed a higher 15S-HETE concentration in active CD relative to active UC. Comparing patients with CD with active and inactive disease showed a trend of increased levels of thromboxane B2, leukotriene B4 and 9S-HODE (hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid) in the active versus the inactive disease. We also observed statistically significantly higher levels of 12S-HETE in inactive CD relative to active CD. In the UC group, on the other hand, statistically significantly higher levels of prostaglandin E2 and 16RS-HETE were observed in active UC relative to inactive UC. Moreover, significantly higher concentrations of LTX A4 5S, 6R were observed in inactive UC relative to the active phase. In conclusion, the present study indicated the activity of the 15-LOX pathway in CD. Further studies involving lipid mediators in patients with IBD may contribute to the development of new therapies for the treatment of IBD. The identification of differences in the course of inflammation may help to target therapy in CD and UC, and perhaps allow the introduction of an additional diagnostic marker between the two main IBD subtypes.

Abstract
Lipoxins (LXs) are generated from arachidonic acid and are involved in the resolution of inflammation and confer protection in a variety of pathological processes. In the nervous system, LXs exert an array of protective effects against neurological diseases, including ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, neonatal hypoxia-ischemia encephalopathy, brain and spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain. Lipoxin administration is a potential therapeutic strategy in neurological diseases due to its notable efficiency and unique superiority regarding safety. Here, we provide an overview of LXs in terms of their synthesis, signaling pathways and neuroprotective evidence. Overall, we believe that, along with advances in lipoxin-related drug design, LXs will bring brighter prospects for neuroprotection.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are currently among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in many developed countries. They are distinguished by chronic and latent development, a course with stages of worsening of symptoms and a period of improvement, and a constant potential threat to life. One of the most important disorders in cardiovascular disease is ischemic stroke. The causes of ischemic stroke can be divided into non-modifiable and modifiable causes. One treatment modality from a neurological point of view is acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), which blocks cyclooxygenase and, thus, thromboxane synthesis. The legitimacy of its administration does not raise any doubts in the case of the acute phase of stroke in patients in whom thrombolytic treatment cannot be initiated. The measurement of thromboxane B2 (TxB2) in serum (a stable metabolic product of TxA2) is the only test that measures the effect of aspirin on the activity of COX-1 in platelets. Measurement of thromboxane B2 may be a potential biomarker of vascular disease risk in patients treated with aspirin. The aim of this study is to present the role of thromboxane B2 in ischemic stroke and to present effective therapies for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Scientific articles from the PubMed database were used for the work, which were selected on the basis of a search for “thromboxane and stroke”. Subsequently, a restriction was introduced for works older than 10 years, those concerning animals, and those without full text access. Ultimately, 58 articles were selected. It was shown that a high concentration of TXB2 may be a risk factor for ischemic stroke or ischemic heart disease. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that thromboxane could be used in clinical practice as a marker of ischemic stroke. The inclusion of ASA in the prevention of stroke has a beneficial effect that is associated with the effect on thromboxane. However, its insufficient power in 25% or even 50% of the population should be taken into account. An alternative and/or additional therapy could be a selective antagonist of the thromboxane receptor. Thromboxane A2 production is inhibited by estrogen; therefore, the risk of CVD after the menopause and among men is higher. More research is needed in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory derivatives of free fatty acids are involved in the development of neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunctions. The study aim was to establish the influence of eicosanoids on the cognitive status of stroke patients. METHODS 73 stroke patients were prospectively evaluated towards the neuropsychological cognitive functions on the 7th day after stroke and after follow-up of 6 months. Eicosanoids levels were measured in all patients and compared to stroke-free controls (n = 30). RESULTS Prostaglandin E2 was negatively correlated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) test on the 7th day after stroke. The level of 9-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (9S-HODE) was significantly higher in patients with cognitive dysfunctions in MOCA test compared to the others (group I mean ± SD: 0.040 ± 0.035 vs. group II: 0.0271 ± 0.016). In the initial neuropsychological assessment maresin 1-, 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE), 12S-HETE and 15S-HETE were negatively correlated with California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and thus with cognitive functions, while in the follow-up examination negative correlations were identified for prostaglandin E2, meresin 1, leukotriene B4, 13S HODE, 9S-HODE; the only positive correlation was observed in 15S-HETE. Other neuropsychological tests showed a beneficial impact of resolvin D1 and a negative role of prostaglandin E2 was observed in the first examination and in the follow-up. Resolvin D1 and the group of all analyzed eicosanoids predict changes in cognitive functions. CONCLUSIONS Eicosanoids can play a role in the neuroinflammation. They can affect the cognitive status at the stroke onset and have a predictive value for post-stroke cognitive decline. Prostaglandin E2, 9S-, 13S-HODE and resolvin D1 are the most important inflammatory free fatty acid derivatives in the cognitive functions in stroke. Eicosanoids predict post-stroke cognitive functions.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of motor impairment and psychosocial disability. Although free fatty acids (FFA) have been proven to affect the risk of stroke and potentially dementia, the evidence of their impact on cognitive functions in stroke patients is lacking. We aimed to establish such potential relationships. Seventy-two ischemic stroke patients were prospectively analysed. Their cognitive functions were assessed seven days post-stroke and six months later as follow-up (n = 41). Seven days post-stroke analysis of serum FFAs levels showed direct correlations between Cognitive Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and the following FFAs: C20:4n6 arachidonic acid and C20:5n3 eicosapentaenoic acid, while negative correlations were observed for C18:3n3 linolenic acid (ALA), C18:4 n3 stearidonic acid and C23:0 tricosanoic acid. Follow-up examination with CVLT revealed positive correlations with C15:0 pentadecanoid acid, C18:3n6 gamma linoleic acid, SDA, C23:0 tricosanoic acid and negative correlations with C14:0 myristic acid and C14:1 myristolenic acids. Several tests (Trail Making Test, Stroop Dots Trail, Digit Span Test and Verbal Fluency Test) were directly correlated mainly with C14:0 myristic acid and C14:1 myristolenic acid, while corresponding negatively with C18:1 vaccinic acid, C20:3n3 cis-11-eicosatrienoic acid, C22:1/C20:1 cis11- eicosanic acid and C20:2 cis-11-eicodienoic acid. No correlations between Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) test performed on seventh day, and FFAs levels were found. Saturated fatty acids play a negative role in long-term cognitive outcomes in stroke patients. The metabolic cascade of polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3 PUFA) and the synthesis of (AA) can be involved in pathogenesis of stroke-related cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases including stroke are one of the most common causes of death. Their main cause is atherosclerosis and chronic inflammation in the body. An ischemic stroke may occur as a result of the rupture of unstable atherosclerotic plaque. Cardiovascular diseases are associated with uncontrolled inflammation. The inflammatory reaction produces chemical mediators that stimulate the resolution of inflammation. One of these mediators is lipoxins—pro-resolving mediators that are derived from the omega-6 fatty acid family, promoting inflammation relief and supporting tissue regeneration. Aim: The aim of the study was to review the available literature on the therapeutic potential of lipoxins in the context of ischemic stroke. Material and Methods: Articles published up to 31 January 2021 were included in the review. The literature was searched on the basis of PubMed and Embase in terms of the entries: ‘stroke and lipoxin’ and ‘stroke and atherosclerosis’, resulting in over 110 articles in total. Studies that were not in full-text English, letters to the editor, and conference abstracts were excluded. Results: In animal studies, the injection/administration of lipoxin A4 improved the integrity of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), decreased the volume of damage caused by ischemic stroke, and decreased brain edema. In addition, lipoxin A4 inhibited the infiltration of neutrophils and the production of cytokines and pro-inflammatory chemokines, such as interleukin (Il-1β, Il-6, Il-8) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The beneficial effects were also observed after introducing the administration of lipoxin A4 analog—BML-111. BML-111 significantly reduces the size of a stroke and protects the cerebral cortex, possibly by reducing the permeability of the blood–brain barrier. Moreover, more potent than lipoxin A4, it has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the amount of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusions: Lipoxins and their analogues may find application in reducing damage caused by stroke and improving the prognosis of patients after ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Inflammation is an a physiological response instead an essential response of the organism to injury and its adequate resolution is essential to restore homeostasis. However, defective resolution can be the precursor of severe forms of chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Nowadays, it is known that an excessive inflammatory response underlies the most prevalent human pathologies worldwide. Therefore, great biomedical research efforts have been driven toward discovering new strategies to promote the resolution of inflammation with fewer side-effects and more specificity than the available anti-inflammatory treatments. In this line, the use of endogenous specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) has gained a prominent interest. Among the different SPMs described, lipoxins stand out as one of the most studied and their deficiency has been widely associated with a wide range of pathologies. In this review, we examined the current knowledge on the therapeutic potential of lipoxins to treat diseases characterized by a severe inflammatory background affecting main physiological systems, paying special attention to the signaling pathways involved. Altogether, we provide an updated overview of the evidence suggesting that increasing endogenously generated lipoxins may emerge as a new therapeutic approach to prevent and treat many of the most prevalent diseases underpinned by an increased inflammatory response.

Abstract
Objective The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) affects poststroke functional outcome, neurogenesis, neuroprotection, and neuroplasticity. Its level is related to the diet and nutritional status, and more specifically, it is free fatty acids (FFAs) and eicosanoids that can have an impact on the BDNF level. The aim of this study was to analyze the potential impact of FFAs and eicosanoids on the BDNF level in stroke patients. Material and Methods. Seventy-three ischemic stroke patients were prospectively enrolled in the study. Laboratory tests were performed in all subjects, including the levels of FFAs, eicosanoids, and BDNF. FFAs and inflammatory metabolites were determined by gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, while BDNF was evaluated by the immune-enzymatic method (ELISA). Results The plasma level of BDNF negatively correlated with C22:1n9 13 erucic acid, C18:3n3 linolenic acid (ALA), and lipoxin A4 15-epi-LxA4. A direct association was observed in relation to BDNF and C16:1 palmitoleic acid and C20:3n6 eicosatrienoic acid (dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA)). Conclusions Saturated fatty acids and omega-3 and omega-9 erucic acids can affect signaling in the BDNF synthesis resulting in the decrease in BDNF. There is a beneficial effect of DGLA on the BDNF level, while the effect of ALA on BDNF can be inhibitory. Specialized proresolving lipid mediators can play a role in the BDNF metabolism. BDNF can interact with inflammation as the risk factor in the cardiovascular disorders, including stroke.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most ischemic strokes develop as a result of atherosclerosis, in which inflammation plays a key role. The synthesis cascade of proinflammatory mediators participates in the process induced in the vascular endothelium and platelets. Resolvins are anti-inflammatory mediators originating from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which may improve the prognosis related to atherosclerosis by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines, limiting neutrophil migration, or positively influencing phagocytosis. Although clinical trials with resolvin in humans after stroke have not been realized, they may soon find application. AIM The aim of the study was to review the available literature on the scope of the possibilities of the prevention and treatment of stroke with the use of resolvins, EPA and DHA derivatives. MATERIALS AND METHODS The review features articles published until 31 January 2020. The search for adequate literature was conducted using the keywords: stroke and resolvins. Over 150 articles were found. Studies not written in English, letters to the editor, conference abstracts, and duplicate information were excluded. RESULTS In several studies using the animal model, the supplementation of resolvin D2 decreased brain damage caused by myocardial infarction, and it reversed the neurological dysfunction of the brain. A decrease in the concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, Il-6, and Il-1β, was also observed, as well as a decrease in the scope of brain damage. In the context of stroke in animals, the treatment with resolvin D2 (RvD2) (injection) has a better effect than supplementation with DHA. CONCLUSIONS Resolvins are characterised by strong anti-inflammatory properties. Resolvins improve prognosis and decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, consequently lowering the risk of stroke, and may find application in the treatment of stroke.
