Antibacterial activity and characteristics of silver nanoparticles biosynthesized from Carduus crispus

Electron Beam-Supported Fabrication of Biocompatible Silver/iota-Carrageenan for Wound Healing Application

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a potent antibacterial agent, especially when used to treat bacteria that are multidrug resistant. However, it is challenging to eliminate the hazardous reducing agents that remain in AgNPs produced by the conventional chemical reduction process. To overcome these challenges, the presented research demonstrates the fabrication of AgNPs using iota-carrageenan (ι-carra) as a carbohydrate polymer using electron beam (EB) irradiation. Well-characterized ι-carra@AgNPs have a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with spherical morphology and an average size of 26 nm. Herein we explored the approach for fabricating ι-carra@AgNPs that is suitable for scaling up the production of nanoparticles that exhibit excellent water stability. Further, the optimized ι-carra@AgNPs exhibited considerable antibacterial activity of 40% and 30% inhibition when tested with Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 43895 and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (ATCC 6538), respectively, and low cytotoxicity at 10-50 μg/mL. To establish the potential biomedical application, as proof of the concept, the ι-carra@AgNPs showed significant antibiofilm activity at 20 μg/mL and also showed 95% wound healing abilities at 50 μg/mL compared to the nontreated control groups. Electron beam assisted ι-carra@AgNPs showed significant beneficial effects against specific bacterial strains and may provide a guide for the development of new antibacterial materials for wound dressing for large-scale production for biomedical applications.

Highly efficient hydrophobic nanocomposite in the decontamination of micropollutants and bacteria from aqueous wastes: A sustainable approach

Micro-pollutants (specifically antibiotics and personal care products) and potential bacterial contamination pose a severe threat to human health and marine life. The study derives indigenous novel fibrous hydrophobic nanocomposite, efficient in decontaminating the micro-pollutants (tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA)) and potential pathogens (S. pyogenes and E. coli) from aqueous wastes. A facile method synthesizes the fibrous attapulgite (ATP)- poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-styrene) (PVP) framework decorated in situ with the Ag0 nanoparticles (ATP@PVP/Ag0). A greener method using the Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf extract derives the Ag0(NPs). Various analytical methods extensively characterize the materials. A comprehensive study that includes pH, concentration, background electrolytes, and ionic strength reveals the sorptive removal insights of TC and BPA utilizing the ATP@PVP solid. The elimination of tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA) agrees well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The pH 3.07 and 6.06 favor removing TC and BPA with the capacity of 10.86 mg/g and 17.36 mg/g at 25 °C. The hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions predominate the sorption mechanism, and the material shows remarkable stability and reusability in repeated sorption/desorption operations. Similarly, the natural water implications and flow-bed system show fair applicability of solid in decontaminating the TC and BPA in an aqueous medium. Further, the material ATP@PVP/Ag0 exhibits very high inhibition of potential pathogens S. pyogenes and E. coli and optimizes the solid dose and solution pH.

Development of an active biogenic silver nanoparticles composite film based on berry wax and chitosan for rabbit meat preservation

This study aimed to develop an eco-friendly active biogenic nanocomposite film through the complexation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), berry wax (BYW), and chitosan (CT) for maintiaing rabbit functional meat freshness. AgNPs were synthesized using Chinese medicinal paeoniaceae petal extract, and they were loaded at various concentrations (0.5 %, 0.75 %, 1.0 %, 1.25 %, and 1.5 % based on CT w/w) into the CT/BYW complex. The AgNPs exhibited an average size of 55 nm and a zeta potential of -26.3 mV with a spherical shape. The particle size and zeta potential of the film dispersions were 370.5-529.5 nm and 40.17-49.345 mV, respectively. FTIR, SEM, and XRD results showed compatibility among AgNPs and CT/BYW structure. The film water vapor permeability and light transparency decreased from 6.5 to 3.5 and 10 to 0.78 %, respectively, while opacity increased from 1.76 to 9.96 % with increasing concentrations of AgNPs. Among them, the film composite CT/BYW/AgNPs1.5% had better antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which was then applied for rabbit meat preservation at 4 °C for 16 days of storage. CT/BYW/AgNPs1.5%-packed sample had lower values of TVB-N, TBARS, TVC, and pH with greater retention of color properties compared to the control sample, which describes its ability to maintain meat freshness.

Superior In Vivo Wound-Healing Activity of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles with Nepeta cataria (Catnip) on Excision Wound Model in Rat

Silver nanoparticles were biosynthesized with Nepeta cataria plant extract. It was determined that the synthesized Nc-AgNPs gave a strong absorbance peak at 438 nm wavelength in the UV-vis spectrophotometer. SEM and TEM analyses of Nc-AgNPs showed that the synthesized nanoparticles had a spherical morphology. Based on XRD analysis, the average crystallite size of Nc-AgNPs was calculated at 15.74 nm. At the same time, EDS spectrum analysis exhibited dominant emission energy at 3 keV, indicative of Nc-AgNPs. Nc-AgNPs showed an inhibition zone of 12 nm in gram-negative Escherichia coli, 10 nm in gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis, and 11 nm in Staphylococcus aureus. Nc-AgNPs showed high antioxidant properties, with 63% at 5000 μg/mL. The wound-healing properties of Nc-AgNPs were evaluated in vivo in wound models created in a total of 20 Wistar albino male rats, divided into four groups. After 10 days of treatment, the highest wound closure rate was seen in the Nc-AgNP + Vaseline (Group IV) treatment group, at 94%. It was observed that Nc-AgNP + Vaseline nanoformulation significantly increased wound healing, similar to Silverdin®, and Vaseline alone supported healing but did not result in complete closure. Histopathological examination revealed an increase in mature Type 1 collagen in Group IV and positive control (Group II), with better collagen maturation in vehicle control (Group III) compared to negative control (Group I). Immunohistochemical analysis showed complete epithelialization in Group IV and Group II, with distinct cytokeratin expressions, while Group III exhibited mild expressions.

Harnessing barley grains for green synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles with antibacterial potential

The continuous evolution and significance of green resources-based nanomaterials have spurred the exploration of sustainable sources for nanoparticle production. Green synthesis routes offer eco-friendly methodologies, ensuring nanoparticle stability and monodispersity, enhancing their efficiency for various applications. Notably, the thick biological corona layer surrounding nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through green routes contributes to their unique properties. Consequently, there has been a surge in the development of NPs synthesis methods utilizing medicinal plants and diverse agricultural and waste resources. This study highlights the sustainable potential of barley grains for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Barley-AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (Barley-AgNPs) as an environmentally friendly alternative, followed by NPs characterizations and their application against pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli UTI 89 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. The rapid synthesis of Barley-AuNPs within 20 min and Barley-AgNPs within 30 min at 90 °C underscores the efficiency of barley as a green precursor. Characterization through advanced techniques, including SEM, TEM, EDS, AFM, DLS, FT-IR, MALDI-TOF, and sp-ICPMS, reveals the 20-25 nm size for Barley-AuNPs, while Barley-AgNPs demonstrate 2-10 nm size with spherical monodispersity. A notable contribution lies in the stability of these NPs over extended periods, attributed to a thick biological corona layer. This corona layer, which enhances stability, also influences the antimicrobial activity of Barley-AgNPs, presenting an intriguing trade-off. The antimicrobial investigations highlight the significant potential of Barley-AgNPs, with distinct minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) against P. aeruginosa and E. coli at 8 µg/mL. Overall, this research pioneers the use of barley grains for nanoparticle synthesis and unveils these nanoparticles' unique characteristics and potential antibacterial applications, contributing to the evolving landscape of sustainable nanotechnology.

Green synthesis of Poria cocos polysaccharides-silver nanoparticles and their applications in food packaging

To reduce pollution caused by traditional plastic packaging and preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this work aims to develop biological macromolecular packaging films with green synthesized AgNPs. In this study, a novel P. cocos polysaccharide (PCP) with a unique monosaccharide composition was extracted from Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf. Then, this polysaccharide containing 24.68 % rhamnose was used as a stabilizer for the green synthesis of PCP-AgNPs for the first time. PCP-AgNPs exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. aureus, with the highest antibacterial activity against E. coli (inhibition zone diameter = 11.14 ± 0.79 mm). Subsequently, PCP-AgNPs/chitosan (CS) film was successfully prepared by incorporating PCP-AgNPs into the CS film solution. Several experiments demonstrated that the addition of this nanomaterial promoted the formation of noncovalent interactions between CS and PCP-AgNPs, resulting in a more regular and denser film. Compared to the CS film and control group, the PCP-AgNPs/CS film significantly maintained the quality indexes of strawberries. Therefore, this composite film successfully extended the shelf life of strawberries. Regarding safety, these packaging films were not cytotoxic toward RAW264.7 cells. In conclusion, the environmentally friendly PCP-AgNPs/CS film has the potential to replace some traditional food packaging materials.

Microbial nanotechnology for agriculture, food, and environmental sustainability: Current status and future perspective

The field of nanotechnology has the mysterious capacity to reform every subject it touches. Nanotechnology advancements have already altered a variety of scientific and industrial fields. Nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm (nm) are of great scientific and commercial interest. Their functions and characteristics differ significantly from those of bulk metal. Commercial quantities of NPs are synthesized using chemical or physical methods. The use of the physical and chemical approaches remained popular for many years; however, the recognition of their hazardous effects on human well-being and conditions influenced serious world perspectives for the researchers. There is a growing need in this field for simple, non-toxic, clean, and environmentally safe nanoparticle production methods to reduce environmental impact and waste and increase energy productivity. Microbial nanotechnology is relatively a new field. Using various microorganisms, a wide range of nanoparticles with well-defined chemical composition, morphology, and size have been synthesized, and their applications in a wide range of cutting-edge technological areas have been investigated. Green synthesis of the nanoparticles is cost-efficient and requires low maintenance. The present review highlights the synthesis of the nanoparticles by different microbes, their characterization, and their biotechnological potential. It further deals with the applications in biomedical, food, and textile industries as well as its role in biosensing, waste recycling, and biofuel production.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Mediated by Punica granatum Peel Waste: An Effective Additive for Natural Rubber Latex Nanofibers Enhancement

Pomegranate waste poses an environmental challenge in Arequipa. Simultaneously, interest in sustainable materials like natural rubber latex (NRL) is growing, with Peruvian communities offering a promising source. This study explores the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using pomegranate peel extract and their incorporation into NRL nanofibers for enhanced functionalities. An eco-friendly process utilized silver nitrate and pomegranate peel extract as a reducing and capping agent to synthesize AgNPs. The resulting AgNPs and NRL/AgNPs nanofibers were characterized using imaging and spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis, TGA, FTIR, XRD, Raman, SEM, and DLS. Green-synthesized AgNPs were spherical and crystalline, with an average diameter of 59 nm. They showed activity against K. pneumoniae, E. coli, B. cereus, and S. aureus (IC50: 51.32, 4.87, 27.72, and 69.72 µg/mL, respectively). NRL and NRL/AgNPs nanofibers (300-373 nm diameter) were successfully fabricated. The composite nanofibers exhibited antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae and B. cereus. This study presents a sustainable approach by utilizing pomegranate waste for AgNP synthesis and NRL sourced from Peruvian communities. Integrating AgNPs into NRL nanofibers produced composites with antimicrobial properties. This work has potential applications in smart textiles, biomedical textiles, and filtration materials where sustainability and antimicrobial functionality are crucial.

Unraveling the mysteries of silver nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, antimicrobial effects and uptake translocation in plant-a review

The study thoroughly investigates nanosilver production, properties, and interactions, shedding light on its multifaceted applications. It underscores the importance of characterizing nanosilver for predicting its behavior in complex environments. Particularly, it highlights the agricultural and environmental ramifications of nanosilver uptake by plants. Nowadays, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a very adaptable nanomaterial with many uses, particularly in antibacterial treatments and agricultural operations. Clarification of key elements of nanosilver, such as its synthesis and characterization procedures, antibacterial activity, and intricate interactions with plants, particularly those pertaining to uptake and translocation mechanisms, is the aim of this in-depth investigation. Nanosilver synthesis is a multifaceted process that includes a range of methodologies, including chemical, biological, and sustainable approaches that are also environmentally benign. This section provides a critical evaluation of these methods, considering their impacts on repeatability, scalability, and environmental impact. The physicochemical properties of nanosilver were determined by means of characterization procedures. This review highlights the significance of analytical approaches such as spectroscopy, microscopy, and other state-of the-art methods for fully characterizing nanosilver particles. Although grasp of these properties is necessary in order to predict the behavior and potential impacts of nanosilver in complex biological and environmental systems. The second half of this article delves into the intricate interactions that plants have with nanosilver, emphasizing the mechanisms of absorption and translocation. There are significant ramifications for agricultural and environmental problems from the uptake of nanosilver by plants and its subsequent passage through their tissues. In summary, by summarizing the state-of-the-art information in this field, this study offers a comprehensive overview of the production, characterization, antibacterial capabilities, and interactions of nanosilver with plants. This paper contributes to the ongoing conversation in nanotechnology.

Interactions of Co(II)- and Zn(II)porphyrin of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridinio)porphyrin with DNA in Aqueous Solution and Their Antimicrobial Activities

Antibiotics are frequently used to treat, prevent, or control bacterial infections, but in recent years, infections resistant to all known classes of conventional antibiotics have significantly grown. The development of novel, nontoxic, and nonincursive antimicrobial methods that work more quickly and efficiently than the present antibiotics is required to combat this growing public health issue. Here, Co(II) and Zn(II) derivatives of tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4yl)porphyrin [H2TMPyP]4+ as a tetra(ρ-toluenesulfonate) were synthesized and purified to investigate their interactions with DNA (pH 7.40, 25 °C) using UV-vis, fluorescence techniques, and antimicrobial activity. UV-vis results showed that [H2TMPyP]4+ had a high hypochromicity (∼64%) and a substantial bathochromic shift (Δλ, 14 nm), while [Co(II)TMPyP]4+ and [Zn(II)TMPyP]4+ showed little hypochromicity (∼37%) and a small bathochromic shift (Δλ, 3-6 nm). Results reveal that [H2TMPyP]4+ interacts with DNA via intercalation, while Co(II)- and [Zn(II)TMPyP]4+ interact with DNA via outside self-stacking. Fluorescence results also confirmed the interaction of [H2TMPyP]4+ and the metalloporphyrins with DNA. Results of the antimicrobial activity assay revealed that the metalloporphyrins showed inhibitory effects on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi, but that neither the counterions nor [H2TMPyP]4+ exhibited any inhibitory effects. Mechanism of antimicrobial activities of metalloporphyrins are discussed.

Ginseng root extract-mediated synthesis of monodisperse silver nanoparticles as a fluorescent probe for the spectrofluorometric determination of nilvadipine; Evaluation of remarkable anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and in-vitro cytotoxic activities

Nanoparticles are a boon for humanity because of their improved functionality and unlimited potential applications. Considering this significance, the proposed study introduced a simple, fast and eco-friendly method for synthesis of fluorescent silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using Panax Ginseng root extract as a reducing and capping agent. Synthesis of Ag-NPs was performed in one step within three minutes utilizing microwave irradiation. The resulting Ag-NPs were characterized using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), UV/Visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR) and Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The prepared Ag-NPs, which act as a fluorescent nano-probe with an emission band at 416 nm after excitation at 331 nm, were used to assay nilvadipine (NLV) spectrofluorimetrically in its pharmaceutical dosage form with good sensitivity and reproducibility. The proposed study is based on the ability of NLV to quantitatively quench the native Ag-NPs fluorescence, forming a ground state complex as a result of static quenching and an inner filter mechanism. The suggested approach displayed a satisfactory linear relationship throughout a concentration range of 5.0 μM - 100.0 μM, with LOD and LOQ values of 1.18 μM and 3.57 μM, respectively. Validation of the suggested approach was examined in accordance with ICH recommendations. In addition, the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities of the prepared nanoparticles were investigated, and they demonstrated effective anti-microbial activities and opened a future prospective to combat future antibiotic resistance. Finally, in-vitro cytotoxicity assay of Ag-NPs against normal and cancerous human cell lines was studied using MTT assay. The results proved the potential use of the produced Ag-NPs as an adjunct to anticancer treatment or for drug delivery without significantly harming healthy human cells.

Biosynthesis of Ag2Se nanoparticles as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent with excellent biocompatibility

Silver (Ag)-containing nanomaterials have emerged as promising alternatives or adjuvants to antibiotics. Ongoing research is dedicated to enhance their antimicrobial efficacy, stability, biocompatibility, and environmental sustainability. Microorganism-synthesized Ag-containing nanomaterials offer distinct advantages, especially for various surface modification, which potentially fulfill these objectives. In this study, we present the synthesis of silver-selenium (Bio-Ag2Se) nanoparticles using a yeast strain, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa PA-1. These Bio-Ag2Se nanoparticles have small size with a narrow size distribution (12.3 ± 2.9 nm) and long-term stability. They demonstrate a broad antimicrobial spectrum and high antimicrobial efficacy at very low concentrations, effectively targeting microorganisms including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, as well as pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. Furthermore, Bio-Ag2Se nanoparticles exhibit excellent efficacy to inhibit and eliminate biofilms formed by notorious pathogen S. aureus. In contrast, Bio-Ag2Se nanoparticles at effective antibacterial concentrations demonstrate favorable biocompatibility and do not show obvious cytotoxic effects on human and plant cells. To elucidate the antibacterial mechanisms of Bio-Ag2Se nanoparticles against S. aureus and E. coli, transcriptomic analysis and phenotypic examination were employed. The results reveal significant and broad up-regulation in carbon metabolism pathways in both S. aureus and E. coli, suggesting it as one of the major antibacterial mechanisms of Bio-Ag2Se. This study presents a green synthesis strategy for Ag-containing nanoparticles with promising applications.

Alginic acid-functionalized silver nanoparticles: A rapid monitoring tool for detecting the technology-critical element tellurium

The increasing global demand for tellurium, driven by its critical role in alloys, photovoltaic devices, and electronics, has raised concerns about its environmental pollution and neurotoxicity. In response, the potential of alginic acid (AA), a renewable, low-cost, and sustainable biopolymer, was explored for the biosynthesis of ultra-small silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their application in the detection of tellurium (Te(IV)). The effect of key synthesis parameters on desired physicochemical properties and yield of AgNPs was established to ensure high specificity and sensitivity towards Te(IV). The purified AgNPs with AA surface ligands were utilized to demonstrate a ratiometric absorbance sensor that exhibits excellent linearity and nanomolar-level affinity. This approach achieved a high correlation coefficient of ∼ 0.982, with a low detection limit of about 22 nM. Further investigations into the effect of pH, ionic strength, and organic molecules were conducted to elucidate detection performance and molecular understanding. The detection mechanism relies on the coordination between Te(IV) ions and the carboxylate groups of AA, which initiates aggregation-induced plasmon coupling in adjacent AgNPs. The capability of this analytical method to monitor Te(IV) in real-world water samples features its rapidity, user-friendliness, and suitability for point-of-care monitoring, making it a promising alternative to more complex techniques.

Preparation and characterizations of antibacterial poly(methyl methacrylate) bone cement via copolymerization with a quaternary ammonium monomer of dimethylaminotriclosan methacrylate

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement relies on the loaded antibiotic to realize the antibacterial purpose. But the exothermic behavior during setting often makes temperature-sensitive antibiotics inactivated. It is necessary to develop new material candidates to replace antibiotics. In this study, a new quaternary ammonium methacrylate (QAM) monomer called dimethylaminetriclosan methacrylate (DMATCM) was designed by the quaternization between 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and triclosan, then employed as the modifier to explore the feasibility of equipping bone cement with antibacterial activity, and to investigate the variations on the physical and biological performances brought by the substitution ratio of DMATCM to MMA. Results showed that DMATCM opened its C=C bonding to participate in the MMA polymerization, and the quaternary ammonium group helped it to perform broad-spectrum antibacterial property against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. With an increased substitution ratio of DMATCM to MMA, the glass transition temperatures, the maximum exothermic temperatures, and the contact angles of bone cements declined, but the residual monomer contents, the fluid uptakes, and the setting times under Vical indentation increased. Long-term soaking made almost no changes to the weight loss and the mechanical properties of DMATCM-modified cements with lower substitution ratios of 0∼20%, and the activation rather enhanced the strengths of uncured AMBC-4 and AMBC-5 samples. Owing to more DMATCM exposed on the cement surface, the inhibition ring diameter produced by modified cement was improved to a maximum of 28.09 mm, and MC3T3-E1 cells performed the cell viabilities all beyond 70% and healthy adhesion after 72 h co-culturing. Taking all measured properties and ISO standards into account, the antibacterial bone cement under the ratio of 10% performed better, besides its good bactericidal effect, the other properties satisfied the requirements for clinical application.

Benzopyrene elimination from the environment using graphitic carbon nitride-SnS nanocomposites

Benzopyrene (BaP) stands as a potent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecule, boasting five fused aromatic rings, making its way into the human food chain through soil contamination. The persistent environmental presence of PAHs in soil, attributed to industrial exposure, is primarily due to their low molecular weight and hydrophobic nature. To preemptively address the entry of BaP into the food chain, the application of nanocomposites was identified as an effective remediation strategy. Post-synthesis, comprehensive characterization tests employing techniques such as UV-DRS, XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and DLS unveiled the distinctive features of the g-C3N4-SnS nanocomposites. These nanocomposites exhibited spherical shapes embedded on layers of nanosheets, boasting particle diameters measuring 88.9 nm. Subsequent tests were conducted to assess the efficacy of eliminating benzopyrene from a combination of PAH molecules and g-C3N4-SnS nanocomposites. Varied parameters, including PAH concentration, adsorbent dosage, and suspension pH, were systematically explored. The optimized conditions for the efficient removal of BaP utilizing the g-C3N4-SnS nanocomposite involved 2 μg/mL of benzopyrene, 10 μg/mL of the nanocomposite, and a pH of 5, considering UV light as the irradiation source. The investigation into the mechanism governing BaP elimination closely aligned with batch adsorption results involved a thorough exploration of adsorption kinetics and isotherms. Photocatalytic degradation of benzopyrene was achieved, reaching a maximum of 86 % in 4 h and 36 % in 2 h, with g-C3N4-SnS nanocomposite acting as the catalyst. Further validation through HPLC data confirmed the successful removal of BaP from the soil matrix.

Investigating the effect of acidic and basic precipitation on the antibacterial activity of ZnO nanoparticles against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria

In the present work, acidic (direct) and basic precipitation (indirect) methods were used to demonstrate the influence of the mode of precipitation on the structural properties of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). Four samples of ZnO nanoparticles were prepared, two samples via each mode of precipitation. DZOa and IZOa were the aged samples prepared via acidic and basic precipitation methods, and DZOwa and IZOwa were processed without aging. Both precipitation processes were carried out without using any surfactant reagents. Zinc hydroxide precipitate, which was formed during the basic precipitation method, could be critical in deciding the properties of ZnO NPs, unlike zinc hydroxide formed during acidic precipitation. Aging of zinc hydroxide, synthesised by basic precipitation method for 48 hours was found to be an added advantage in controlling the properties of ZnO NPs. The influence of the mode of precipitation on the structural properties and antibacterial activity of ZnO NPs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains was tested. The antibacterial activity of all four ZnO NPs was analysed via zone of inhibition measurements at a concentration dose of 200 μg ml-1. IZOa nanoparticles prepared using the basic precipitation method showed a higher antibacterial activity against three Gram-negative and one Gram-positive strains, namely, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. DZOa nanoparticles synthesized through acidic precipitation showed relatively high antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhimurium, a Gram-negative strain. ZnO NPs prepared without aging, IZOwa and DZOwa, showed a higher antibacterial activity against E. coli and Bacillus sp. strains, respectively. All ZnO NPs were characterized via UV-visible, FTIR, XRD, and HRSEM techniques.

Caralluma pauciflorabased Ag-NPs activate ROS - induced apoptosis through down-regulation of AKT, mTOR and pI3K signaling in human gastric cancer (AGS) cells

The phytochemicals found inCaralluma pauciflorawere studied for their ability to reduce silver nitrate in order to synthesise silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and characterise their size and crystal structure. Thunbergol, 1,1,6-trimethyl-3-methylene-2-(3,6,9,13-tetram, Methyl nonadecanoate, Methyl cis-13,16-Docosadienate, and (1R,4aR,5S)-5-[(E)-5-Hydroxy-3-methylpent were the major compounds identified in the methanol extract by gas chromatography-mass spectrum analysis. UV/Vis spectra, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope with Energy Dispersive Xâray Analysis (EDAX), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) particle size analyser and atomic force microscope (AfM) were used to characterise theCaralluma paucifloraplant extract-based AgNPs. The crystal structure and estimated size of the AgNPs ranged from 20.2 to 43 nm, according to the characterization data. The anti-cancer activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesised fromCaralluma paucifloraextract. The AgNPs inhibited more than 60% of the AGS cell lines and had an IC50 value of 10.9640.318 g, according to the findings. The cells were further examined using fluorescence microscopy, which revealed that the AgNPs triggered apoptosis in the cells. Furthermore, the researchers looked at the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells treated with AgNPs and discovered that the existence of ROS was indicated by green fluorescence. Finally, apoptotic gene mRNA expression analysis revealed that three target proteins (AKT, mTOR, and pI3K) were downregulated following AgNP therapy. Overall, the findings imply that AgNPs synthesised from Caralluma pauciflora extract could be used to treat human gastric cancer.

Antimicrobial and Virus Adsorption Properties of Y-Zeolite Exchanged with Silver and Zinc Cations

The antimicrobial activity of silver and zinc exchanged cations in Y-zeolite (Ag/CBV-600, Zn/CBV-600) is evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (gram (+)) and Escherichia coli (gram (-)) bacteria along with their adsorption capacity for viruses: brome mosaic virus (BMV), cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV), and the bacteriophage MS2. The physicochemical properties of synthesized nanomaterials are characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). According to the obtained results, the main species associated with the exchanged ions are Ag+ and Zn2+ cations with the concentration of around 1 atomic %. The incorporation of cations does not modify the Y-zeolite framework. The Ag/CBV-600 and Zn/CBV-600 materials show an inactivation of 90% for both gram (+) and gram (-) bacteria at 16 h at a relatively low concentration of nanomaterial (0.5 mg/mL). Moreover, the samples present good adsorption capacity for BMV, CCMV, and MS2 viruses showing adsorption higher than 40% after 2 h of interaction with the viruses. These prominent results allow the further usage of nanomaterials as an effective remedy to inhibit and reduce the spread of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 or other gram (+) or gram (-) bacteria.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Drymaria cordata and Their Biocompatibility with Hemoglobin: A Therapeutic Potential Approach

In this study, we present the synthesis and characterization of AgNPs using Drymaria cordata along with an assessment of their antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiabetic activities. Antibacterial activities using four bacterial strains, free radical scavenging assays (DPPH and ABTS), and carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzyme inhibition assays were done to examine the therapeutic efficacy of AgNPs. Additionally, herein, we also evaluated the biocompatibility of the AgNPs using hemoglobin (Hb) as a model protein. A comprehensive analysis of Hb and AgNP interactions was carried out by using various spectroscopic, imaging, and size determination studies. Spectroscopic results showed that the secondary structure of Hb was not altered after its interaction with AgNPs. Furthermore, the thermal stability was also well maintained at different concentrations of nanoparticles. This study demonstrated a low-cost, quick, and eco-friendly method for developing AgNPs using D. cordata, and the biocompatible nature of AgNPs was also established. D. cordata-mediated AgNPs have potential applications against bacteria and diabetes and may be utilized for targeted drug delivery.

Bio-reductive synthesis of silver nanoparticles, its antibacterial efficiency, and possible toxicity in common carp fish (Cyprinus carpio)

The biological synthesis of nanoparticles is an emerging field of study that seeks to synthesize nanoparticles using non-chemical mechanisms such as microorganisms, plants, and animal blood serum. Among these, plants have gained particular attention due to their ease of handling, availability, and ability to synthesize a wide range of nanoparticles. Therefore, the current study aimed to fabricate the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Chinese medicinal plants (CMP) for their possible toxicity in common carp fish (Cyprinus carpio). For this purpose, CMP was dried, ground, and used as a bio-reductive agent. The fabricated AgNPs were characterized and a well dispersed AgNPs were obtained. Moreover, the C. carpio was exposed to the AgNPs for bioaccumulation and histological alterations. The obtained findings revealed that the AgNPs were mostly accumulated in the intestines followed by the gills, muscles, liver, and brain. The accumulated AgNPs caused histological alterations in gills and intestines at the highest concentration (0.08 mg/L). However, very less alterations were caused by the lowest concentration, especially in the intestine. In conclusion, further in-depth research is needed to determine the risks associated with the usage of nanoparticles to reveal their harmful impacts on fish and the aquatic environment. HIGHLIGHTS: The biological fabrication of AgNPs is considered eco-friendly. Chinese medicinal plants play a significant role in AgNPs synthesis. AgNPs have excellent antibacterial activity. AgNPs are bioaccumulated in various organs of fish.

The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone on the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles synthesized using microwave radiation

Tautomerism alters the structure and properties of materials, which can be exploited to control their chemical and biological activities. The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was determined by measuring the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of microwave synthesized-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). TEM and XRD analyses confirmed the formation of face-centered cubic silver nanoparticles. PVP stabilized the AgNPs by interaction with the carbonyl or hydroxyl groups depending on the tautomerization under different pH conditions. At pH 4, PVP was stable in the keto tautomer, stabilizing Ag through electron donation of oxygen atoms in the carbonyl group, producing smaller AgNPs with a higher zeta potential. At pH 7 and 9, the enol tautomer PVP stabilized the AgNPs via oxygen atoms in the hydroxyl group, forming large nanoparticles. The keto form of PVP improved the stability and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of AgNPs compared with the enol form. This study also excluded the antioxidant contribution of PVP via hydrogen donation to free radicals. A facile method for controlling the size of AgNPs by adapting the pH-induced tautomerism of PVP that affects their stability and antioxidant and antibacterial activities is thus reported.

Antibacterial and antioxidant potential analysis of Verbascum sinaiticum leaf extract and its synthesized silver nanoparticles

The potential applications of plant extract and nanoparticles in antibacterial and antioxidant studies have garnered significant interest in recent times. Despite being utilized in Ethiopian traditional medicine, Verbascum sinaiticum (qetetina) constituents and its usage in nanoparticle synthesis remain relatively unexplored. This study explores the potential of the plant extract and its nanoparticles for antibacterial and antioxidant applications, with a focus on the leaf extracts and its silver nanoparticles. The leaf extract was analyzed using LC-MS and GC-MS and found to contain over 70 compounds, including glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and fatty acids. The synthesized nanoparticles had a maximum absorbance of 408 nm, with a size range of 2-40 nm and showed a spherical shape. Using the agar well diffusion method, the extract and nanoparticles were evaluated against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 2592, Streptococcus agalactia ATCC12386) and Gram-negative bacteria (Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC19606, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853) bacterial strains. In terms of antibacterial effects, both the silver nanoparticles and leaf extract displayed a greater impact on gram-positive bacterial strains over gram-negative bacterial strains. Additionally, the tests for lowest inhibitory and bactericidal concentration indicated similar outcomes. Notably, the silver nanoparticles exhibited greater antibacterial activity compared to the leaf extract alone. The DPPH (2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) assay was conducted to investigate antioxidant activity. The results showed that the plant extract had an IC50 value of 143 μg/ml, while the synthesized nanoparticle had an IC50 value of 216 μg/ml, indicating that the plant extract had greater antioxidant activity than the synthesized silver nanoparticles.

Metal-based nanoparticles in antibacterial application in biomedical field: Current development and potential mechanisms

The rise in drug resistance in pathogenic bacteria greatly endangers public health in the post-antibiotic era, and drug-resistant bacteria currently pose a great challenge not only to the community but also to clinical procedures, including surgery, stent implantation, organ transplantation, and other medical procedures involving any open wound and compromised human immunity. Biofilm-associated drug failure, as well as rapid resistance to last-resort antibiotics, necessitates the search for novel treatments against bacterial infection. In recent years, the flourishing development of nanotechnology has provided new insights for exploiting promising alternative therapeutics for drug-resistant bacteria. Metallic agents have been applied in antibacterial usage for several centuries, and the functional modification of metal-based biomaterials using nanotechnology has now attracted great interest in the antibacterial field, not only for their intrinsic antibacterial nature but also for their ready on-demand functionalization and enhanced interaction with bacteria, rendering them with good potential in further translation. However, the possible toxicity of MNPs to the host cells and tissue still hinders its application, and current knowledge on their interaction with cellular pathways is not enough. This review will focus on recent advances in developing metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), including silver, gold, copper, and other metallic nanoparticles, for antibacterial applications, and their potential mechanisms of interaction with pathogenic bacteria as well as hosts.

Bioinspired silver nanoparticle-based nanocomposites for effective control of plant pathogens: A review

Plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, pose significant challenges to the farming community due to their extensive diversity, the rapidly evolving phenomenon of multi-drug resistance (MDR), and the limited availability of effective control measures. Amid mounting global pressure, particularly from the World Health Organization, to limit the use of antibiotics in agriculture and livestock management, there is increasing consideration of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) as promising alternatives for antimicrobial applications. Studies focusing on the application of ENMs in the fight against MDR pathogens are receiving increasing attention, driven by significant losses in agriculture and critical knowledge gaps in this crucial field. In this review, we explore the potential contributions of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their nanocomposites in combating plant diseases, within the emerging interdisciplinary arena of nano-phytopathology. AgNPs and their nanocomposites are increasingly acknowledged as promising countermeasures against plant pathogens, owing to their unique physicochemical characteristics and inherent antimicrobial properties. This review explores recent advancements in engineered nanocomposites, highlights their diverse mechanisms for pathogen control, and draws attention to their potential in antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral applications. In the discussion, we briefly address three crucial dimensions of combating plant pathogens: green synthesis approaches, toxicity-environmental concerns, and factors influencing antimicrobial efficacy. Finally, we outline recent advancements, existing challenges, and prospects in scholarly research to facilitate the integration of nanotechnology across interdisciplinary fields for more effective treatment and prevention of plant diseases.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using the Cell-Free Supernatant of Haematococcus pluvialis Culture

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the cell-free supernatant of a Haematococcus pluvialis culture (CFS) was implemented in the current study, under illumination conditions. The reduction of Ag+ to AgNPs by the CFS could be described by a pseudo-first-order kinetic equation at the temperature range tested. A high reaction rate during synthesis and stable AgNPs were obtained at 45 °C, while an alkaline pH (pH = 11.0) and a AgNO3 aqueous solution to CFS ratio of 90:10 (v/v) proved to be the most effective conditions in AgNPs synthesis. A metal precursor (AgNO3) at the concentration range tested (1-5 mM) was the limited reactant in the synthesis process. The synthesis of AgNPs was accomplished under static and agitated conditions. Continuous stirring enhanced the rate of reaction but induced aggregation at prolonged incubation times. Zeta potential and polydispersity index measurements indicated stable AgNPs and the majority of AgNPs formation occurred in the monodisperse phase. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed the face-centered cubic structure of the formed AgNPs, while TEM analysis revealed that the AgNPs were of a quasi-spherical shape with a size from 30 to 50 nm. The long-term stability of the AgNPs could be achieved in darkness and at 4 °C. In addition, the synthesized nanoparticles showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli.

Regulating Enzyme Catalysis by Tailored Silver Nanocrystals Fabricated with Holigarna arnottiana-Synthesis, Characterization, and Performance Optimization

Modification of catalytic expression of enzymes and regulating their in vivo activity are the goals of novel treatment strategies. A green synthetic nanostructured silver with potent trypsin inhibitory properties has not yet been developed, despite the fact that silver nanoparticles possess unique properties that allow them to efficiently block enzymes. The present study demonstrates for the first time a facile, safe, economic, and eco-friendly synthetic route for silver nanoparticles using an aqueous extract of Holigarna arnottiana bark engineered to interact with trypsin and hinder its activity effectively. The studies carried out to examine the interaction between these biofabricated AgNPs (HaAgNPs) and trypsin by UV-visible spectrophotometry and FTIR spectroscopy suggest that the formation of trypsin-HaAgNP complex is responsible for diminishing the catalytic efficiency of trypsin. In vivo studies on Aedes aegypti larval serum support these instrumental results of HaAgNP-induced trypsin inhibition and proves its application as a biopesticide. It is noteworthy that the bioengineered HaAgNPs were also found to have good inhibition potential against pepsin and urease as well. A variety of methods have been employed to characterize the synthesized biocompatible HaAgNPs and it possesses a characteristic absorption maximum of 420 nm. Their shelf life of above 7 years is noticeable, since none of the reported green synthesized AgNPs possess a shelf life of more than 1 year. Altogether, this work demonstrates that biofabricated HaAgNPs are multifunctional and cost-resilient biological tools that can be used as enzyme regulators possessing antioxidant, antimicrobial, and insecticidal features.

Multifunctional gold nanoparticles for osteoporosis: synthesis, mechanism and therapeutic applications

Osteoporosis is currently the most prevalent bone disorder worldwide and is characterized by low bone mineral density and an overall increased risk of fractures. To treat osteoporosis, a range of drugs targeting bone homeostasis have emerged in clinical practice, including anti-osteoclast agents such as bisphosphonates and denosumab, bone formation stimulating agents such as teriparatide, and selective oestrogen receptor modulators. However, traditional clinical medicine still faces challenges related to side effects and high costs of these types of treatments. Nanomaterials (particularly gold nanoparticles [AuNPs]), which have unique optical properties and excellent biocompatibility, have gained attention in the field of osteoporosis research. AuNPs have been found to promote osteoblast differentiation, inhibit osteoclast formation, and block the differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells, which thus is believed to be a novel and promising candidate for osteoporosis treatment. This review summarizes the advances and drawbacks of AuNPs in their synthesis and the mechanisms in bone formation and resorption in vitro and in vivo, with a focus on their size, shape, and chemical composition as relevant parameters for the treatment of osteoporosis. Additionally, several important and promising directions for future studies are also discussed, which is of great significance for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Bioinspired Multifunctional Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Sensing Applications: A Sustainable Approach

Silver nanoparticles developed via biosynthesis are the most fascinating nanosized particles and encompassed with excellent physicochemical properties. The bioinspired nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes have attracted huge attention due to their stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and use of less hazardous chemicals. This is an ideal method for synthesizing a range of nanosized metal particles from plants and biomolecules. Optical biosensors are progressively being fabricated for the attainment of sustainability by using opportunities offered by nanotechnology. This review focuses mainly on tuning the optical properties of the metal nanoparticles for optical sensing to explore the importance and applications of bioinspired silver nanoparticles. Further, this review deliberates the role of bioinspired silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and energy applications. Profound insight into the antimicrobial properties of these nanoparticles is also appreciated. Tailor-made bioinspired nanoparticles with effectuating characteristics can unsurprisingly target tumor cells and distribute enwrapped payloads intensively. Existing challenges and prospects of bioinspired Ag NPs are also summarized. This review is expected to deliver perceptions about the progress of the next generation of bioinspired Ag NPs and their outstanding performances in various fields by promoting sustainable practices for fabricating optical sensing devices.

Impacts of Hydrophobic Mismatch on Antimicrobial Peptide Efficacy and Bilayer Permeabilization

Antimicrobial resistance continues to be a major threat to world health, with the continued emergence of resistant bacterial strains. Antimicrobial peptides have emerged as an attractive option for the development of novel antimicrobial compounds in part due to their ubiquity in nature and the general lack of resistance development to this class of molecules. In this work, we analyzed the antimicrobial peptide C18G and several truncated forms for efficacy and the underlying mechanistic effects of the sequence truncation. The peptides were screened for antimicrobial efficacy against several standard laboratory strains, and further analyzed using fluorescence spectroscopy to evaluate binding to model lipid membranes and bilayer disruption. The results show a clear correlation between the length of the peptide and the antimicrobial efficacy. Furthermore, there is a correlation between peptide length and the hydrophobic thickness of the bilayer, indicating that hydrophobic mismatch is likely a contributing factor to the loss of efficacy in shorter peptides.

Characteristic Improvement of a Carrageenan-Based Bionanocomposite Polymer Film Containing Montmorillonite as Food Packaging through the Addition of Silver and Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Plastic has become an essential ingredient in social life, especially in its function as food packaging. An increase in plastic consumption can have a big impact, especially on environmental issues, because of the plastic waste produced. Substituting petroleum-based plastic with bionanocomposites can be done to reduce the impact of environmental issues caused by plastic waste. The purpose of this study is to produce nanoparticle-incorporated bioplastics, which can be applied as alternative food packaging, especially as petroleum-based plastic substitutes, and as food packaging that has added value in the form of antimicrobial properties. In addition, nanoparticles are also intended to improve the characteristics of bioplastics such as improving mechanical properties and film permeability as well as increasing the barrier properties of bioplastics against ultraviolet rays that can damage packaged food. Bionanocomposites with modified forms were investigated by various characterization such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), mechanical property testing of bioplastics as well as analysis of water vapor permeability (WVP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), and antimicrobial testing. Visible improvement of mechanical and UV barrier properties was seen in bionanocomposites with the addition of cerium nanoparticles. Furthermore, we have also demonstrated the antibacterial activity properties of nanoparticle-loaded bionanocomposites, which can add value to their use as food packaging. These results indicate that carrageenan-based bionanocomposites have a high potential for positive application in food packaging to ensure food safety and extend the shelf life of packaged foods.

Hollow Cobalt Sulfide Nanospheres with Highly Enzyme-like Antibacterial Activities to Accelerate Infected Wound Healing

The emergence of nanozymes presents a promising alternative to antibiotics for reactive oxygen species-mediated broad-spectrum antimicrobial purposes, but nanozymes still face challenges of low therapeutic efficiency and poor biocompatibility. Herein, we creatively prepared a novel kind of hollow cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanospheres with a unique mesoporous structure that is able to provide numerous active sites for enzyme-like reactions. The results revealed that 50 μg/mL of CoS nanospheres exhibited strong peroxidase- and oxidase-like activities under physiological conditions with the assistance of a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 100 μM) while possessing highly efficient GSH-depletion ability, which endowed CoS nanospheres with triple enzyme-like properties to combat bacterial infections. The in vitro experiments demonstrated that the CoS nanozyme displayed significant antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli). The in vivo implantation showed that the synthesized CoS effectively eliminated bacteria and promoted the recovery of infected wounds in rats while exhibiting a low cytotoxicity. This study provides a promising treatment strategy to accelerate infected wound healing.

Formulation and Characterization of Hesperidin-Loaded Transethosomal Gel for Dermal Delivery to Enhance Antibacterial Activity: Comprehension of In Vitro, Ex Vivo, and Dermatokinetic Analysis

In this study, hesperidin was loaded into a transethosome and was developed employing the rotary evaporator method. The formulation was optimized using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimized HSD-TE formulation has a spherical shape, vesicle size, polydispersity index, entrapment efficiency, and zeta potential within the range of 178.98 nm; the PDI was 0.259 with a zeta potential of -31.14 mV and % EE of 89.51%, respectively. The in vitro drug release shows that HSD-TE exhibited the release of 81.124 ± 3.45% in comparison to HSD suspension. The ex vivo skin permeation showed a 2-fold increase in HSD-TE gel permeation. The antioxidant activity of HSD-TE was found to be 79.20 ± 1.77% higher than that of the HSD solution. The formulation showed 2-fold deeper HSD-TE penetration across excised rat skin membranes in confocal laser microscopy scanning, indicating promising in vivo prospects. In a dermatokinetic study, HSD-TE gel was compared to HSD conventional gel where TE significantly boosted HSD transport in the epidermis and dermal layers. The formulation showed greater efficacy than free HSD in the inhibition of microbial growth, as evidenced by antibacterial activity on the Gram-negative and positive bacteria. These investigations found that the HSD-TE formulation could enhance the topical application in the management of cutaneous bacterial infections.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using tea leaf extract (camellia sinensis) for photocatalyst and antibacterial effect

Silver nanoparticles (C. AgNPs) are synthesized by the biological reduction method using extracts from green tea leaves (Camellia Sinensis) collected from tea hills at an altitude of 100 m above the ground. The chemicals present in the tea leaf extract act as reducing agents used to reduce Ag+ ions to silver atoms to form C. AgNPs in the solution. In this work, we optimized the C. AgNPs synthesis process by investigating the influence of reaction parameters such as concentration of tea leaf extract (1 ppm-50 ppm), reaction temperature (30 °C-60 °C), reaction time (5 min-100 min), and reaction rate (400 rpm-800 rpm) through absorption UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM transmission electron microscopy, and spectroscopy X-ray. Organic compounds in tea leaf extract are detected by NMR measurement. The functional groups on the C. AgNPs are shown on the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum. The C. AgNPs are used to degrade MB dye at 10 ppm concentration based on the photocatalytic effect using a 6500 K white light source. The C. AgNPs have also been studied for their antibacterial activity on two bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.A) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.A), while a positive control is Ampicillin 50 mg/ml and a negative control is H2O. The results reveal that the C. AgNPs with diameters in the range of 25 nm-55 nm degrade 10 ppm MB dye after 1 h with photodegradation efficiency up to 96 %. The antibacterial ability of C. AgNPs against both bacteria is good, even superior to that of Ampicillin. Furthermore, the particle synthesis efficiency and therefore the antibacterial activity as well as the photodegradation effect of C. AgNPs are higher than previously reported. At the same time, using green tea leaf extract to synthesize C. AgNPs creates environmentally friendly products. These useful behaviors are the potential to increase the scope and applicability of C. AgNPs, especially for biomedical applications in the near future.

Green synthesis, characterization, anti-SARS-CoV-2 entry, and replication of lactoferrin-coated zinc nanoparticles with halting lung fibrosis induced in adult male albino rats

The ethanolic extract of Coleus forskohlii Briq leaves was employed in the green synthesis of zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) by an immediate, one-step, and cost-effective method in the present study. Zn-NPs were coated with purified bovine lactoferrin (LF) and characterized through different instrumental analysis. The biosynthesized Zn-NPs were white in color revealing oval to spherical-shaped particles with an average size of 77 ± 5.50 nm, whereas LF-coated Zn-NPs (LF-Zn-NPs) revealed a larger particles size of up to 98 ± 6.40 nm. The biosynthesized Zn-NPs and LF-Zn-NPs revealed negatively charged surfaces with zeta-potentials of – 20.25 ± 0.35 and – 44.3 ± 3.25 mV, respectively. Interestingly, the LF-Zn-NPs showed potent in vitro retardation for SARS-CoV-2 entry to host cells by binding to the ACE2-receptor and spike protein receptor binding domain at IC50 values of 59.66 and μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, the results indicated the ability of LF-Zn-NPs to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication by interfering with RNA-dependent RNA polymerase “RdRp” activity at IC50 of 49.23 μg/mL. In vivo, the LF-Zn-NPs displayed a protective and therapeutic activity against induced pulmonary fibrosis in Bleomycin-treated male albino rats owing to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and significant reduction in CRP, LDH, ferritin, and D-dimer levels. The obtained findings offer a promising route for biosynthesized Zn-NPs and LF-Zn-NPs as promising candidates against COVID-19.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Jasminum nudiflorum Flower Extract and Their Antifungal and Antioxidant Activity

The synthesis of metal nanomaterials is a timely topic due to their widespread use in fields such as crop protection, the environment, medicine, and engineering. Green synthesis of nanoparticles, which uses plant extracts instead of industrial chemical agents to reduce metal ions, has been developed to decrease costs, reduce pollution, and improve environmental and human health safety. In this paper, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from the flower extract of Jasminum nudiflorum. The green synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and other technologies. The antifungal activity of the prepared AgNPs against Alternaria longipes was tested using the plate method, the concentration dilution method, and other methods, and the antioxidant activity of the prepared AgNPs was evaluated by DPPH and hydroxyl free scavenging methods. The results showed that AgNPs synthesized from J. nudiflorum flower extract have a face-centered cubic structure (fcc), and the average grain size of the nanoparticles is 13 nm; they are also mainly spherical in shape. Additionally, the concentration of AgNPs (ranging from 16 to 128 μg/mL) significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of A. longipes in comparison to the control. The inhibitory rate gradually increased with increasing AgNP concentration, ranging from 70.64% to 79.60% at a concentration of 128 μg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration was observed at 32 μg/mL. AgNPs induced overaccumulation of MDA in A. longipes, resulting in cell membrane damage and nucleic acid leakage. Moreover, the AgNPs have significant antioxidant properties, which increase with increasing concentration. The clearance rate of DPPH was 25.46 ± 0.90% when the concentration of AgNPs was 8 μg/mL, and the clearance rate of the hydroxyl radical was 28.62 ± 0.59% when the concentration of AgNPs was 128 μg/mL. Thus, the flower extract from J. nudiflorum holds potential as an environmentally friendly and green alternative for the synthesis of AgNPs, which have antifungal and antioxidant potential.

Recycling of silver nanoparticles from electronic waste via green synthesis and application of AgNPs-chitosan based nanocomposite on textile material

The main thrust of this project is the fabrication of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from electronic waste (PCB board) and applying it on 100% cotton fabric as an antimicrobial agent. The nanoparticle formation of silver was done by green synthesis way using an aqueous leaf extract of Eichhornia crassipes. Furthermore, chitosan was also applied to the fabric with silver nanoparticles by coating. FTIR and SEM tests characterized the fabricated silver nanoparticles, and antimicrobial tests were followed by the disc diffusion method. The SEM analysis showed an average particle size of 76.91 nm. The FTIR analysis showed the successful reduction of silver nanoparticles and the bonding with chitosan and cellulose. Besides, the EDX reports confirmed the existence of AgNPs by indicating a strong signal in the silver region. In addition, SEM characteristics analysis confirmed the uniform deposition of silver nanoparticles. Finally, the antimicrobial property was tested against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The antimicrobial result was found satisfactory in the case of green-synthesized recycled AgNPs. However, the effectiveness was not observed to be higher than green-synthesized pure AgNPs. In this study, the zone of inhibition of AgNPs was also compared to the reference antibiotics Ciprofloxacin.

Biofabrication of novel silver and zinc oxide nanoparticles from Fusarium solani IOR 825 and their potential application in agriculture as biocontrol agents of phytopathogens, and seed germination and seedling growth promoters

Introduction: Plant pathogenic microorganisms adversely affect the growth and yield of crops, which consequently leads to losses in food production. Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) can be a remedy to solve this problem. Methods: Novel silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were biosynthesized from Fusarium solani IOR 825 and characterized using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and measurement of Zeta potential. Antibacterial activity of NPs was evaluated against four plant pathogenic strains by determination of the minimum inhibitory (MIC) and biocidal concentrations (MBC). Micro-broth dilution method and poisoned food technique were used to assess antifungal activity of NPs against a set of plant pathogens. Effect of nanopriming with both types of MNPs on maize seed germination and seedlings growth was evaluated at a concentration range of 1-256 μg mL-1. Results: Mycosynthesis of MNPs provided small (8.27 nm), spherical and stable (zeta potential of -17.08 mV) AgNPs with good crystallinity. Similarly, ZnONPs synthesized by using two different methods (ZnONPs(1) and ZnONPs(2)) were larger in size (117.79 and 175.12 nm, respectively) with Zeta potential at -9.39 and -21.81 mV, respectively. The FTIR spectra showed the functional groups (hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl) of the capping molecules on the surface of MNPs. The values of MIC and MBC of AgNPs against bacteria ranged from 8 to 256 μg mL-1 and from 512 to 1024 μg mL-1, respectively. Both types of ZnONPs displayed antibacterial activity at 256-1024 μg mL-1 (MIC) and 512-2048 μg mL-1 (MBC), but in the concentration range tested, they revealed no activity against Pectobacterium carotovorum. Moreover, AgNPs and ZnONPs inhibited the mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Phoma lingam, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. MIC and MFC values of AgNPs ranged from 16-128 and 16-2048 μg mL -1, respectively. ZnONPs showed antifungal activity with MIC and MFC values of 128-2048 μg mL-1 and 256-2048 μg mL-1, respectively. The AgNPs at a concentration of ≥32 μg mL-1 revealed sterilization effect on maize seeds while ZnONPs demonstrated stimulatory effect on seedlings growth at concentrations of ≥16 μg mL-1 by improving the fresh and dry biomass production by 24% and 18%-19%, respectively. Discussion: AgNPs and ZnONPs mycosynthesized from F. solani IOR 825 could be applied in agriculture to prevent the spread of pathogens. However, further toxicity assays should be performed before field evaluation. In view of the potential of ZnONPs to stimulate plant growth, they could be crucial in increasing crop production from the perspective of current food assurance problems.

Unraveling the New Perspectives on Antimicrobial Hydrogels: State-of-the-Art and Translational Applications

The growing impact of infections and the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance represent a public health concern worldwide. The exponential development in the field of biomaterials and its multiple applications can offer a solution to the problems that derive from these situations. In this sense, antimicrobial hydrogels represent a promising opportunity with multiple translational expectations in the medical management of infectious diseases due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties as well as for drug delivery in specific areas. Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers that can absorb and retain large amounts of water or biological fluids. Moreover, antimicrobial hydrogels (AMH) present good biocompatibility, low toxicity, availability, viscoelasticity, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties. In the present review, we collect and discuss the most promising strategies in the development of AMH, which are divided into hydrogels with inherent antimicrobial activity and antimicrobial agent-loaded hydrogels based on their composition. Then, we present an overview of the main translational applications: wound healing, tissue engineering and regeneration, drug delivery systems, contact lenses, 3D printing, biosensing, and water purification.

Metal-Based Nanoparticles in Food Packaging and Coating Technologies: A Review

Food security has continued to be a topic of interest in our world due to the increasing demand for food. Many technologies have been adopted to enhance food supply and narrow the demand gap. Thus, the attempt to use nanotechnology to improve food security and increase supply has emerged due to the severe shortcomings of conventional technologies, which have made them insufficient to cater to the continuous demand for food products. Hence, nanoparticles have been identified to play a major role in areas involving food production, protection, and shelf-life extensions. Specifically, metal-based nanoparticles have been singled out to play an important role in manufacturing materials with outstanding properties, which can help increase the shelf-life of different food materials. The physicochemical and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles, such as the large surface area and antimicrobial properties, have made them suitable and adequately useful, not just as a regular packaging material but as a functional material upon incorporation into biopolymer matrices. These, amongst many other reasons, have led to their wide synthesis and applications, even though their methods of preparation and risk evaluation remain a topic of concern. This review, therefore, briefly explores the available synthetic methods, physicochemical properties, roles, and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles for food packaging. Furthermore, the associated limitations, alongside quality and safety considerations, of these materials were summarily explored. Although this area of research continues to garner attention, this review showed that metal-based nanoparticles possess great potential to be a leading material for food packaging if the problem of migration and toxicity can be effectively modulated.

Application of Red Onion Peel Extract for Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles in Hydrogels Exhibiting Antimicrobial Properties

UV-initiated green synthesis of metal nanoparticles by using plant extracts as photoreducing agents is of particular interest since it is an environmentally friendly, easy-to-maintain, and cost-effective method. Plant molecules that act as reducing agents are assembled in a highly controlled way which makes them suitable for metal nanoparticle synthesis. Depending on the plant species, their application for green synthesis of metal nanoparticles for diverse applications may contribute to the mediation/reduction in organic waste amounts, thus enabling the implementation of the circular economy concept. In this work, UV-initiated green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles in hydrogels and hydrogel's thin films containing gelatin (matrix), red onion peel extract of different concentrations, water, and a small amount of 1 M AgNO₃ have been investigated and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM and EDS analysis, XRD technique, performing swelling experiments and antimicrobial tests using bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), yeasts (Candida parapsilosis, Candida albicans) and microscopic fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus). It was found that the antimicrobial effectiveness of the silver-enriched red onion peel extract-gelatin films was higher at lower AgNO₃ concentrations as compared to those usually used in the commercially available antimicrobial products. The enhancement of the antimicrobial effectiveness was analyzed and discussed, assuming the synergy between photoreducing agent (red onion peel extract) and silver nitrate (AgNO₃) in the initial gel solutions leading to the intensification of Ag nanoparticles production.

Green Synthesis of Controlled Shape Silver Nanostructures and Their Peroxidase, Catalytic Degradation, and Antibacterial Activity

Nanoparticles with unique shapes have garnered significant interest due to their enhanced surface area-to-volume ratio, leading to improved potential compared to their spherical counterparts. The present study focuses on a biological approach to producing different silver nanostructures employing Moringa oleifera leaf extract. Phytoextract provides metabolites, serving as reducing and stabilizing agents in the reaction. Two different silver nanostructures, dendritic (AgNDs) and spherical (AgNPs), were successfully formed by adjusting the phytoextract concentration with and without copper ions in the reaction system, resulting in particle sizes of ~300 ± 30 nm (AgNDs) and ~100 ± 30 nm (AgNPs). These nanostructures were characterized by several techniques to ascertain their physicochemical properties; the surface was distinguished by functional groups related to polyphenols due to plant extract that led to critical controlling of the shape of nanoparticles. Nanostructures performance was assessed in terms of peroxidase-like activity, catalytic behavior for dye degradation, and antibacterial activity. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that AgNDs demonstrated significantly higher peroxidase activity compared to AgNPs when evaluated using chromogenic reagent 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. Furthermore, AgNDs exhibited enhanced catalytic degradation activities, achieving degradation percentages of 92.2% and 91.0% for methyl orange and methylene blue dyes, respectively, compared to 66.6% and 58.0% for AgNPs. Additionally, AgNDs exhibited superior antibacterial properties against Gram-negative E. coli compared to Gram-positive S. aureus, as evidenced by the calculated zone of inhibition. These findings highlight the potential of the green synthesis method in generating novel nanoparticle morphologies, such as dendritic shape, compared with the traditionally synthesized spherical shape of silver nanostructures. The synthesis of such unique nanostructures holds promise for various applications and further investigations in diverse sectors, including chemical and biomedical fields.

Antibacterial and anticancer activities of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles using Photinia glabra fruit extract

Aims: We prepared Photinia glabra (PG) aqueous fruit extract, utilized it to synthesize silver nanoparticles (PG-Ag NPs) and evaluated the antibacterial and anticancer activities of the nanoparticles (NPs). Materials & methods: Silver nitrate aqueous solution was reduced to PG-Ag NPs using aqueous PG fruit extract. NP shape, size, composition and functionalization were determined using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and x-ray diffraction. Results & conclusions: PG-Ag NPs were spherical, approximately 39-77 nm-sized, functionalized surfaces with notable antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with an MIC <30 ug/ml and cytotoxicity toward esophageal cancer cells, with IC50 values less than 20 ug/ml. PG-Ag@rt NPs have been shown to be a potent antibacterial and anticancer agent, and their enriched particle surfaces can be conjugated with other compounds for multibiomedical applications.

Effect of Kaolin clay and Ficus carica mediated silver nanoparticles on chitosan food packaging film for fresh apple slice preservation

In this work, a novel antioxidant, antibacterial, and biodegradable food packaging film was elaborated, by incorporating natural kaolin clay (KC) and Ficus carica mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into Chitosan (Cht). A comparison of the physico-chemical and functional characteristics of the Cht/KC/AgNPs film was performed with those of Cht, Cht/KC, and Cht/AgNPs. SEM analysis showed a rough surface in the composite films containing KC particles because of their large diameter (50-120 μm) compared to AgNPs (20-80 nm). The FTIR analysis suggested that the interactions between Cht and AgNPs were stronger than those between Cht and KC. The tensile strength of Cht film increased from 16 MPa to ∼24 MPa in Cht/KC/AgNPs film. The introduction of KC and/or AgNPs considerably improved the light and moisture barrier capacity of the Cht film. The UV light transmittance decreased by 50 % for Cht film when incorporated by KC and AgNPs. Moreover, Cht/AgNPs was better in terms of antioxidant, antibacterial, and mechanical compared to Cht/KC, which was superior in biodegradability and water vapor barrier capacity. In particular, the Cht/KC/AgNPs film presented good barrier, antioxidants, antibacterial, mechanical, and biodegradable properties, owing to the synergistic effect between KC and AgNPs. For the packaging properties, all the films were tested for their ability to keep the freshness of apple slices as wrapping material. The films exhibited good results, and the Cht/KC/AgNPs showed promising performance regarding the moisture loss, browning index, total phenolic compound, and antioxidant activity of the apple slices. Moreover, the Cht/KC/AgNPs film exhibited a migration of silver meeting the standards set by EFSA and ECHA, which makes this film safe for food packaging.

Antiviral Activity of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles from Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Peel Extract against Tobacco Mosaic Virus

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a major pathogen affecting tomato plants worldwide. The efficacy of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) mediated by Punica granatum biowaste peel extract in mitigating the negative impact of TMV infection on tomato growth and oxidative stress was investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Results of SEM analysis of green Ag-NPs revealed the presence of condensed spherical or round NPs with diameters ranging between 61 and 97 nm. TEM confirmed the SEM results and showed round-shaped Ag-NPs with an average size of 33.37 ± 12.7 nm. The elemental analysis (EDX) of prepared Ag-NPs revealed the presence of elemental Ag as a major peak (64.43%) at 3-3.5 KeV. The FTIR revealed several functional groups on the prepared Ag-NPs, for which three treatment strategies for Ag-NP applications were evaluated in the greenhouse study and compared to inoculated TMV and control plants: pre-infection treatment (TB), post-infection treatment (TA), and dual treatment (TD). The results showed that the TD strategy is the most effective in improving tomato growth and reducing viral replication, whereas all Ag-NP treatments (TB, TA, and TD) were found to significantly increase expression of the pathogenesis-related (PR) genes PR-1 and PR-2, as well as polyphenolic compounds, HQT, and C4H genes compared to control plants. In contrast, the flavonoid content of tomato plants was not affected by the viral infection, while the phenolic content was significantly reduced in the TMV group. Furthermore, TMV infection led to a significant increase in oxidative stress markers MDA and H₂O₂, as well as a reduction in the enzymatic activity of the antioxidants PPO, SOD, and POX. Our results clearly showed that the application of Ag-NPs on TMV-infected plants reduces virus accumulation, delays viral replication in all treatments, and greatly enhances the expression of the CHS gene involved in flavonoid biosynthesis. Overall, these findings suggest that treatment with Ag-NPs may be an effective strategy to mitigate the negative impact of TMV infection on tomato plants.

Role of bioactive magnetic nanoparticles in the prevention of wound pathogenic biofilm formation using smart nanocomposites

BACKGROUND

Biofilm formation and its resistance to various antibiotics is a serious health problem in the treatment of wound infections. An ideal wound dressing should have characteristics such as protection of wound from microbial infection, suitable porosity (to absorb wound exudates), proper permeability (to maintain wound moisture), nontoxicity, and biocompatibility. Although silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been investigated as antimicrobial agents, their limitations in penetrating into the biofilm, affecting their efficiency, have consistently been an area for further research.

RESULTS

Consequently, in this study, the optimal amounts of natural and synthetic polymers combination, along with AgNPs, accompanied by iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), were utilized to fabricate a smart bionanocomposite that meets all the requirements of an ideal wound dressing. Superparamagnetic IONPs (with the average size of 11.8 nm) were synthesized through co-precipitation method using oleic acid to improve their stability. It was found that the addition of IONPs to bionanocomposites had a synergistic effect on their antibacterial and antibiofilm properties. Cytotoxicity assay results showed that nanoparticles does not considerably affect eukaryotic cells compared to prokaryotic cells. Based on the images obtained by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), significant AgNPs release was observed when an external magnetic field (EMF) was applied to the bionanocomposites loaded with IONPs, which increased the antibacterial activity and inhibited the formation of biofilm significantly.

CONCLUSION

These finding indicated that the nanocomposite recommended can have an efficient properties for the management of wounds through prevention and treatment of antibiotic-resistant biofilm.

Development and Characterization of Methyl-Anthranilate-Loaded Silver Nanoparticles: A Phytocosmetic Sunscreen Gel for UV Protection

Methyl anthranilate (MA) is a naturally derived compound commonly used in cosmetic products, such as skin care products, fine perfumes, etc. The goal of this research was to develop a UV-protective sunscreen gel using methyl-anthranilate-loaded silver nanoparticles (MA-AgNPs). The microwave approach was used to develop the MA-AgNPs, which were then optimized using Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Particle size (Y1) and absorbance (Y2) were chosen as the response variables, while AgNO₃ (X1), methyl anthranilate concentration (X2), and microwave power (X3) were chosen as the independent variables. Additionally, the prepared AgNPs were approximated for investigations on in vitro active ingredient release, dermatokinetics, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The study's findings showed that the optimal MA-loaded AgNPs formulation had a particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and percentage entrapment efficiency (EE) of 200 nm, 0.296 mV, -25.34 mV, and 87.88%, respectively. The image from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated the spherical shape of the nanoparticles. According to an in vitro investigation on active ingredient release, MA-AgNPs and MA suspension released the active ingredient at rates of 81.83% and 41.62%, respectively. The developed MA-AgNPs formulation was converted into a gel by using Carbopol 934 as a gelling agent. The spreadability and extrudability of MA-AgNPs gel were found to be 16.20 and 15.190, respectively, demonstrating that the gel may spread very easily across the skin's surface. The MA-AgNPs formulation demonstrated improved antioxidant activity in comparison to pure MA. The MA-AgNPs sunscreen gel formulation displayed non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behaviour, which is typical of skin-care products, and was found to be stable during the stability studies. The sun protection factor (SPF) value of MA-AgNPG was found to be 35.75. In contrast to the hydroalcoholic Rhodamine B solution (5.0 µm), the CLSM of rat skin treated with the Rhodamine B-loaded AgNPs formulation showed a deeper penetration of 35.0 µm, indicating the AgNPs formulation was able to pass the barrier and reach the skin's deeper layers for more efficient delivery of the active ingredient. This can help with skin conditions where deeper penetration is necessary for efficacy. Overall, the results indicated that the BBD-optimized MA-AgNPs provided some of the most important benefits over conventional MA formulations for the topical delivery of methyl anthranilate.

Nanofabrication synthesis and its role in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities of AgNPs synthesized by Mangifera indica bark extract

The bio-based nanoparticles synthesis and assessment of their potential biomedical applications related research is rapidly emerging. The ability of an aqueous ethanolic bark extract of Mangifera indica to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities were investigated in this study. Interestingly, the bark extract effectively synthesized the AgNPs, including an absorbance peak at 412 nm and sizes ranging from 56 to 89 nm. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed that the presence of most essential functional groups belongs to the most bioactive compounds. Synthesized AgNPs showed fine antibacterial activity against the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) causing bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus at 50 μg mL^-1 concentrations. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of AgNPs against these pathogens were found as 12.5 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.6, 13.6 ± 0.5 & 14 ± 0.7, 11.5 ± 0.3 & 11.5 ± 0.4, 13 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.7, and 11.8 ± 0.4 & 12 ± 0.8 μg mL^-1 respectively. Interestingly, this AgNPs also possesses outstanding anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities as studied against the egg albumin denaturation (85%) inhibition and MCF 7 (Michigan Cancer Foundation-7: breast cancer cells) cell line (cytotoxicity: 80.1%) at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration. Similarly at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration showed 75% of DPPH radical scavenging potential. These activities were dose dependent, and the findings suggest that the M. indica bark aqueous ethanolic extract synthesized AgNPs can be used as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer agents after in-vivo testing.

An intriguing approach toward antibacterial activity of green synthesized Rutin-templated mesoporous silica nanoparticles decorated with nanosilver

In recent years, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been applied in various biomedicine fields like bioimaging, drug delivery, and antibacterial alternatives. MSNs could be manufactured through green synthetic methods as environmentally friendly and sustainable synthesis approaches, to improve physiochemical characteristics for biomedical applications. In the present research, we used Rutin (Ru) extract, a biocompatible flavonoid, as the reducing agent and nonsurfactant template for the green synthesis of Ag-decorated MSNs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta-potential, x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), brunauer-emmett-teller (BET) analysis, and energy-dispersive system (EDS) spectroscopy were used to evaluate the Ag-decorated MSNs physical characteristics. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and also different types of candida. The cytotoxicity test was performed by using the MTT assay. Based on the findings, the significant antimicrobial efficacy of Ru-Ag-decorated MSNs against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria and different types of fungi was detected as well as acceptable safety and low cytotoxicity even at lower concentrations. Our results have given a straightforward and cost-effective method for fabricating biodegradable Ag-decorated MSNs. The applications of these MSNs in the domains of biomedicine appear to be promising.

Chlorella minutissima-assisted silver nanoparticles synthesis and evaluation of its antibacterial activity

The conventional methods of nanoparticles synthesis led to the production of highly toxic by-products and the use of toxic chemicals that are highly expensive in nature. Thus, the recent past has witnessed a surge in green synthesis of nanoparticles as a sustainable alternative. The present study outlines the biogenic silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) synthesis from an aqueous extract of Chlorella minutissima. The effect of certain parameters such as the reaction mixture's pH and precursor metal solution to algal extract ratios were explored and optimized. The UV spectrophotometric analysis of Ag-NPs gave surface plasmon response maximally at 426 nm. The developed Ag-NPs were characterized using zeta potential, indicating their high stability (-21.2 mV) with a mean diameter of 73.13 nm. Results from field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that the particles were spherical in shape. Ag-NPs synthesized using Chlorella minutissima extract could significantly inhibit the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species. The study highlights that using C. minutissima extract for Ag-NPs synthesis is a convenient and fast process for controlling the growth of Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria.
