Collagen based magnetic nanocomposites for oil removal applications

Hybrid collagen-cellulose-Fe3O4@TiO2 magnetic bio-sponges derived from animal skin waste and Kenaf fibers for wastewater remediation

Water pollution from synthetic dyes and oil spills has a significant impact on the environment and living species. Here, we developed a low-cost, environmentally friendly and easily biodegradable magnetic hybrid bio-sponge nanocomposite from renewable resources such as collagen and cellulose (Kenaf fibre cellulose-collagen, KFCC). We loaded it with magnetic bimetallic Fe3O4@TiO2 (BFT) NPs to produce a photocatalyst material (KFCC-BFT) for the treatment of colored wastewater as well as a sorbent for oil-water separation. The characterization of the bimetallic BFT NPs by XRD, HRTEM and VSM showed the deposition of TiO2 particles onto the surface of Fe3O4 with lattice interlayers spacing of 0.24 and 0.33 nm for Fe3O4 and TiO2, respectively with ferromagnetic property. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra result indicated that the band gap energy of bio-sponges decreases with the increase of the bimetallic moiety. The photocatalytic efficiency of the as-prepared magnetic hybrid bio-sponge in the degradation of crystal violet dye was up to 91.2% under visible light conditions and 86.6% under direct sunlight exposure. Furthermore, the magnetic hybrid bio-sponge was used to separate motor oil from water (> 99%) and had a high oil sorption capacity of 46.1 g/g. Investigation of the recyclability and reusability performance for 9 cycles revealed that the bio-sponge had a high sorption capacity for up to 5 cycles. Our results suggest that the bio-polymer-supported BFT hybrid nanocomposite is a cost-effective and easily biodegradable photocatalyst and has great potential for real-field environmental remediation applications.

Recent advances in superwetting materials for separation of oil/water mixtures

Engineering surfaces or membranes that allow an efficient oil/water separation is highly desired in a wide spectrum of applications ranging from oily wastewater discharge to offshore oil spill accidents. Recent advances in biomimetics, manufacturing, and characterization techniques have led to remarkable progress in the design of various superwetting materials with special wettability. In spite of exciting progress, formulating a strategy robust enough to guide the design and fabrication of separating surfaces remains a daunting challenge. In this review, we first present an overview of the wettability theory to elucidate how to control the surface morphology and chemistry to regulate oil/water separation. Then, parallel approaches are considered for discussing the separation mechanisms according to different oil/water mixtures, and three separation types were identified including filtration, adsorption and other separation types. Finally, perspectives on the challenges and future research directions in this research area are briefly discussed.

Collagen processing with mesoscale aggregates as templates and building blocks

Collagen presents a well-organized hierarchical multilevel structure. Microfibers, fibers, and fiber bundles are the aggregates of natural collagen; which achieve an ideal balance of mechanical strength and toughness at the mesoscopic scale for biological tissue. These mesostructured aggregates of collagen isolated from biological tissues retain these inherent organizational features to enable their use as building blocks for constructing new collagen materials with ideal mechanical performance, thermal and dimensional stability. This strategy is distinct from the more common bottom-up or molecular-level design and assembly approach to generating collagen materials. The present review introduces the hierarchical structure of biological collagen with a focus on mesostructural features. Isolation strategies for these collagen aggregates (CAs) are summarized. Recent progress in the use of these mesostructural components for the construction of new collagen materials with emerging applications is reviewed, including in catalysis, environmental applications, biomedicine, food packaging, electrical energy storage, and flexible sensors. Finally, challenges and prospects are assessed for controllable production of CAs as well as material designs.

A review on the effectiveness of nanocomposites for the treatment and recovery of oil spill

The introduction of unintended oil spills into the marine ecosystem has a significant impact on aquatic life and raises important environmental concerns. The present review summarizes the recent studies where nanocomposites are applied to treat oil spills. The review deals with the techniques used to fabricate nanocomposites and identify the characteristics of nanocomposites beneficial for efficient recovery and treatment of oil spills. It classifies the nanocomposites into four categories, namely bio-based materials, polymeric materials, inorganic-inorganic nanocomposites, and carbon-based nanocomposites, and provides an insight into understanding the interactions of these nanocomposites with different types of oils. Among nanocomposites, bio-based nanocomposites are the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The grafting or modification of magnetic nanoparticles with polymers or other organic materials is preferred to avoid oxidation in wet conditions. The method of synthesizing magnetic nanocomposites and functionalization polymer is essential as it influences saturation magnetization. Notably, the inorganic polymer-based nanocomposite is very less developed and studied for oil spill treatment. Also, the review covers some practical considerations for treating oil spills with nanocomposites. Finally, some aspects of future developments are discussed. The terms "Environmentally friendly," "cost-effective," and "low cost" are often used, but most of the studies lack a critical analysis of the cost and environmental damage caused by chemical alteration techniques. However, the oil and gas industry will considerably benefit from the stimulation of ideas and scientific discoveries in this field.

A keratin/chitosan sponge with excellent hemostatic performance for uncontrolled bleeding

Uncontrolled bleeding leads to a higher fatality rate in the situation of surgery, traffic accidents and warfare. Traditional hemostatic materials such as bandages are not ideal for uncontrolled or incompressible bleeding. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a new medical biomaterial with excellent rapid hemostatic effect. Keratin is a natural, biocompatible and biodegradable protein which contains amino acid sequences that induce cell adhesion. As a potential biomedical material, keratin has been developed and paid attention in tissue engineering fields such as promoting wound healing and nerve repair. Herein, a keratin/chitosan (K/C) sponge was prepared to achieve rapid hemostasis. The characterizations of K/C sponge were investigated, including SEM, TGA, liquid absorption and porosity, showing that the high porosity up to 90.12 ± 2.17 % resulted in an excellent blood absorption. The cytotoxicity test and implantation experiment proved that the K/C sponge was biocompatible and biodegradable. Moreover, the prepared K/C sponge showed better hemostatic performance than chitosan sponge (CS) and the commercially available gelatin sponge in both rat tail amputation and liver trauma bleeding models. Further experiments showed that K/C sponge plays a hemostatic role through the endogenous coagulation pathway, thus shortening the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) effectively. Therefore, this study provided a K/C sponge which can be served as a promising biomedical hemostatic material.

Tenebrio molitor Larvae-Based Magnetic Polyurea Employed as Crude Oil Spill Removal Tool

Renewable resources constitute an extremely rich and varied set of molecules and polymers produced by natural biological activities. Within the applications of these polymers, a very important application is the use of these materials as a sorber for oils or oil spills. The advantage of these nanocomposites is the fact that they integrate different component materials and their properties into a single component material. They have several applications, ranging from environmental remediation to the development of advanced medical applications. This work proposed using magnetic polyurea composites based on an animal substrate from Tenebrio molitor larvae to perform oil spill clean-up operations under a magnetic field in the presence of 1% and 3% of magnetite to be tested as magnetic crude oil sorber. The obtained materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Differential Calorimetry (DSC), and Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF-NMR 1H). The sorber material is simple to prepare and inexpensive. The use of magnetite as a magnetic charge allowed for the efficient removal of oil from water with about 28 g of oil per gram of sorber. These results are very promising and encouraging for future environmental recovery studies involving magnetite and sustainable polymers.

Superhydrophobic magnetic sorbent via surface modification of banded iron formation for oily water treatment

In the current study, a simple dry coating method was utilized to fabricate a super-hydrophobic super-magnetic powder (ZS@BIF) for oily water purification using zinc stearate (ZS) and banded iron formation (BIF). The produced composite was fully characterized as a magnetic sorbent for oily water treatment. The results of X-ray diffraction diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and particle size analysis revealed the fabrication of homogenous hydrophobic-magnetic composite particles with core–shell structure. Contact angle and magnetic susceptibility results showed that 4 (BIF): 1 (Zs) was the ideal coverage ratio to render the core material superhydrophobic and preserve its ferromagnetic nature. The capability of the fabricated composite to sorb. n-butyl acetate, kerosene, and cyclohexane from oil–water system was evaluated. ZS@BIF composite showed a higher affinity to adsorb cyclohexane than n-butyl acetate and kerosene with a maximum adsorption capacity of about 22 g g⁻¹ and 99.9% removal efficiency. Moreover, about 95% of the adsorbed oils could be successfully recovered (desorbed) by rotary evaporator and the regenerated ZS@BIF composite showed high recyclability over ten repeated cycles.

The emergence of nanotechnology in mitigating petroleum oil spills

The world has witnessed the circumstances shaped by the oil spill for many decades that cause serious environmental problems and adverse effects on human health. Many techniques and remediation methods are followed for efficient oil spill cleanups but with the limitations and environmental issues, these procedures were not completely efficient. The "nanotechnology" word itself has fascinated not only the researchers but also many industries and the global race is on to tap its potential and to derive benefit from it. Their small size and exceptional properties have proven their potential in providing technological solutions to engineering problems. This study focuses on the scope of nanotechnology in oil spill cleanups and shows how the limitations presented by conventional methodologies can be overcome. This paper categorizes and thoroughly reviews the application of nanotechnology in oil spill cleanups in different forms and also focuses on the environmental aspects of it.

Polystyrene magnetic nanocomposite blend: An effective, facile, and economical alternative in oil spill removal applications

Finding an efficient and economical method to remediate oil spills on water is a priority worldwide. In this article, we propose a solution to this problem using polystyrene magnetic nanocomposite blends composed of polystyrene chains grafted on the surface of silica coated on iron oxide nanoparticles and polystyrene. The hydrophobic and oleophilic magnetic polymer nanocomposite collected oil from the water surface quickly and efficiently. However, when the magnetic polymer nanocomposite was blended with polystyrene, the resulting material also absorbed oil efficiently from the water surface. The blending technique made it easier to prepare the absorbent and dramatically decreased its cost. These new absorbents absorbed oil up to 5 times their own weight in only 5 minutes. The excellent hydrophobicity, low density, and easy magnetic separation makes these new absorbents a promising alternative to recover oil from spilled in fresh and marine water.

Carbon and polymer-based magnetic nanocomposites for oil-spill remediation-a comprehensive review

Oil spills are a major contributor to water contamination, which sets off a significant impact on the environment, biodiversity, and economy. Efficient removal of oil spills is needed for the protection of marine species as well as the environment. Conventional approaches are not efficient enough for oil-water separation; therefore, effective strategies and efficient removal techniques (and materials) must be developed to restore the contaminated marine to its normal ecology. Several research studies have shown that nanotechnology provides efficient features to clean up these oil spills from the water using magnetic nanomaterials, particularly carbon/polymer-based magnetic nanocomposites. Surface modification of these nanomaterials via different techniques render them with salient innovative features. The present review discusses the advantages and limitations of conventional and advanced techniques for the oil spills removal from wastewater. Furthermore, the synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites, their utilization in oil-water separation, and adsorption mechanisms are discussed. Finally, the advancement and future perspectives of magnetic nanocomposites (particularly of carbon and polymer-based magnetic nanocomposites) in environmental remediation are presented.

Bio-hybrid hydrogel comprising collagen-capped silver nanoparticles and melatonin for accelerated tissue regeneration in skin defects

Hydrogel-based drug delivery systems have emerged as a promising platform for chronic tissue defects owing to their inherent ability to inhibit pathogenic infection and accelerate rapid tissue regeneration. Here, we fabricated a stable bio-hybrid hydrogel system comprising collagen, aminated xanthan gum, bio-capped silver nanoparticles and melatonin with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Highly colloidal bio-capped silver nanoparticles were synthesized using collagen as a reducing cum stabilizing agent for the first time while aminated xanthan gum was synthesized using ethylenediamine treatment on xanthan gum. The synthesized bio-hybrid hydrogel exhibits better gelation, surface morphology, rheology and degelation properties. In vitro assessment of bio-hybrid hydrogel demonstrates excellent bactericidal efficiency against both common wound and multidrug-resistant pathogens and biocompatibility properties. In vivo animal studies demonstrate rapid tissue regeneration, collagen deposition and angiogenesis at the wound site predominantly due to the synergistic effect of silver nanoparticles and melatonin in the hydrogel. This study paves the way for developing biologically functional bio-nano hydrogel systems for promoting effective care for various ailments, including infected chronic wounds.

Microalgae and bio-polymeric adsorbents: an integrative approach giving new directions to wastewater treatment

This review analyses the account of biological (microalgae) and synthetic (bio-polymeric adsorbents) elements to compass the treatment efficiencies of various water pollutants and mechanisms behind them. While considering pollutant removal, both techniques have their own merits and demerits. Microalgal-based methods have been dominantly used as a biological method for pollutant removal. The main limitations of microalgal methods are capacity, scale, dependence on variables of environment and duration of the process. Biopolymers on the other hand are naturally produced, abundant in nature, environmentally safe and biocompatible with cells and many times biodegradable. Algal immobilization in biopolymers has promoted the reuse of cells for further treatment and protected cells from toxic environment monitoring and controlling the external factors like pH, temperature and salinity can promote the removal process while working with the mentioned technologies. In this review, a mechanistic view of both these techniques along with integrated approaches emphasizing on their loopholes and possibilities of improvement in these techniques is represented. In addition to these, the review also discusses the post-treatment effect on algal cells which are specifically dependent on pollutant type and their concentration. All these insights will aid in developing integrated solutions to improve removal efficiencies in an environmentally safe and cost-effective manner.Novelty statement The main objective of this review is to thoroughly understand the role of micro-algal cells and synthetic adsorbents individually as well as their integrative effect in the removal of pollutants from wastewater. Many reviews have been published containing information related to either removal mechanism by algae or synthetic adsorbents. While in this review we have discussed the agents, algae and synthetic adsorbents along with their limitations and explained how these limitations can be overcome with the integration of both the moieties together in process of immobilization. We have covered both the analytical and mechanistic parts of these technologies. Along with this, the post-treatment effects on algae have been discussed which can give us a critical understanding of algal response to pollutants and by-products obtained after treatment. This review contains three different sections, their importance and also explained how these technologies can be improved in the future aspects.

Enhanced surface properties, hydrophobicity, and sorption behavior of ZnO nanoparticle-impregnated biomass support for oil spill treatment

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their efficiency in the adsorption of water pollutants. Except for magnetic NPs, metallic NPs are rarely used in oil sorption studies, due to the difficulty in recovering the NPs from the treated water. This study reports for the first time the application of ZnONPs for oil spill treatment. The ZnONPs were impregnated onto Musa acuminata peel (MP) support to form a novel material (ZnOMP), which was utilized for the sorption of oil from synthetic oil spills. The as-prepared sorbents were characterized by the SEM, EDS, BET, FTIR, FE-SEM, TGA, and XRD techniques. The presence of 31.32-nm average-sized ZnONPs enhanced the oil uptake characteristics, with clear affinity for the oil phase in comparison to the pristine MP. A maximum sorption capacity of 4.146 g/g and 5.236 g/g was obtained for biosorbents MP and ZnOMP, respectively, which was higher than most reported sorbents. The Freundlich model presented the best fit for the isotherm data, while the pseudo-second-order model was most suited for the kinetics. The presence of competing heavy metal ions in solution did not have any significant effect on the oil sorption capacity onto ZnOMP. The sorption mechanism was attributed to absorption and hydrophobic interactions. ZnONPs impregnated onto the biomass enhanced the spontaneity of oil uptake at higher temperatures. Over 82% desorption of the oil contaminant from the biosorbents was achieved during recovery, using petroleum ether and n-pentane as eluents. Concisely, ZnONPs enhanced the uptake and hydrophobic characteristic of MP biomass and showed good recovery and reusability. Thus, the application of ZnONPs impregnated onto biosorbents in oil spill treatment is highly recommended.

Nanofibrous Gelatin-Based Biomaterial with Improved Biomimicry Using D-Periodic Self-Assembled Atelocollagen

Design of bioinspired materials that mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM) at the nanoscale is a challenge in tissue engineering. While nanofibrillar gelatin materials mimic chemical composition and nano-architecture of natural ECM collagen components, it lacks the characteristic D-staggered array (D-periodicity) of 67 nm, which is an important cue in terms of cell recognition and adhesion properties. In this study, a nanofibrous gelatin matrix with improved biomimicry is achieved using a formulation including a minimal content of D-periodic self-assembled atelocollagen. We suggest a processing route approach consisting of the thermally induced phase separation of the gelatin based biopolymeric mixture precursor followed by chemical-free material cross-linking. The matrix nanostructure is characterized using field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The cell culture assays indicate that incorporation of 2.6 wt.% content of D-periodic atelocollagen to the gelatin material, produces a significant increase of MC3T3-E1 mouse preosteoblast cells attachment and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) proliferation, in comparison with related bare gelatin matrices. The presented results demonstrate the achievement of an efficient route to produce a cost-effective, compositionally defined and low immunogenic “collagen-like” instructive biomaterial, based on gelatin.

Cytotoxic aquatic pollutants and their removal by nanocomposite-based sorbents

Water is an extremely essential compound for human life and, hence, accessing drinking water is very important all over the world. Nowadays, due to the urbanization and industrialization, several noxious pollutants are discharged into water. Water pollution by various cytotoxic contaminants, e.g. heavy metal ions, drugs, pesticides, dyes, residues a drastic public health issue for human beings; hence, this topic has been receiving much attention for the specific approaches and technologies to remove hazardous contaminants from water and wastewater. In the current review, the cytotoxicity of different sorts of aquatic pollutants for mammalian is presented. In addition, we will overview the recent advances in various nanocomposite-based adsorbents and different approaches of pollutants removal from water/wastewater with several examples to provide a backdrop for future research.

Reduced graphene oxide decorated with magnetite nanoparticles enhance biomethane enrichment

The addition of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and reduced graphene oxide decorated with magnetite nanoparticles (rGO-MNPs) was evaluated during biomethane enrichment process. rGO-MNPs presented the highest beneficial impact on the hydrogenotrophic assays with an improvement of 47 % in CH₄ production. The improvement was linked to the increase of the electron shuttling capacity (ESC) by rGO-MNPs addition, which boosted the hydrogenotrophic activity of microorganisms, to the rGO and rGO-MNPs, which served as reservoirs of hydrogen, improving H⁠₂ transport from the gas to the liquid phase, and to the iron ions released, which acted as a dietary supply for microorganisms. Raman and XRD confirmed a greater disorder and lower crystallinity of rGO-MNPs after the hydrogenotrophic assays, with a lower effect at a nanoparticle concentration of 50 mg/L. Moreover, FTIR analysis indicated that rGO-MNPs were oxidized during the hydrogenotrophic tests. This study highlights the advantages of adding rGO-MNPs as a magnetic nanocomposite. Furthermore, rGO-MNPs can be easily recovered, minimizing their release to the environment.

Biofunctionalized nanomaterials for in situ clean-up of hydrocarbon contamination: A quantum jump in global bioremediation research

Interfacing organic or inorganic nanoparticles with biological entities or molecules or systems with the aim of developing functionalized nano-scale materials or composites for remediation of persistent organic hydrocarbon pollutants (such as monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, MAH/PAH) has generated great interest and continues to grow almost unabated. However, the usefulness and potency of these materials or conjugates hinges over several key barriers, including structural assembly with fine-tuned control over nanoparticle/biomolecule ratio, spatial orientation and activity of biomolecules, the nano/bio-interface strategy and hierarchical architecture, water-dispersibility and long term colloidal stability in environmental media, and non-specific toxicity. The present review thus critically analyses, discusses and interprets recently reported attempts and approaches to functionalize nanoparticles with biomolecules. Since there is no comprehensive and critical reviews on the applications of nanotechnology in bioremediation of MAHs/PAHs, this overview essentially captures the current global scenario and vision on the use and future prospects of biofunctionalized nanomaterials with respect to their strategic interactions involved at the nano/bio-interface essential to understand and decipher the structural and functional relationships and their impact on persistent hydrocarbon remediation.

Novel bone-mimetic nanohydroxyapatite/collagen porous scaffolds biomimetically mineralized from surface silanized mesoporous nanobioglass/collagen hybrid scaffold: Physicochemical, mechanical and in vivo evaluations

Bone-mimetic scaffolds are receiving much interest as such scaffolds exhibit excellent biocompatibility and very close mimic to bone structure and composition. Here, novel bone-mimetic nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)/collagen (Col) porous scaffolds (nHA/Col) were prepared from surface silanized mesoporous nanobioglass (NBG)/Col hybrid scaffold by biomimetic mineralization. Surface silanized mesoporous NBG was prepared by ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method and post treatment with 3-aminopropyltriethylsilane (APTS). The surface silanized mesoporous NBG was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), transmission electron microscopy-selected area electron diffraction (TEM-SAED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The physicochemical/mechanical characterizations of the scaffolds included scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TEM imaging of micro/nanostructure, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis of chemical composition, TEM-SAED and X-ray diffraction/Attenuated total Reflectance-Fourier Infrared spectroscopy (XRD/ATR-FTIR) analyses of amorphous-to-crystalline transformations, thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetric (TGA/DSC) analyses of thermal behaviour , porosity and dynamic mechanical analyses. The presence of NBG in collagen fibrillar network enabled progressive growth of HA nanocrystals and generation of a novel bone-mimetic hybrid structures while preserving the highly porous structure of collagen scaffold. The crystallinity, crystallite size and crystal morphology of the grown HA nanocrystals were controllable by regulation of the mineralization time. Furthermore, the osteogenic properties of the non-mineralized (NBG/Col) and mineralized (nHA/Col) hybrid porous scaffolds were examined in vivo using critical-sized calvarial bone defect model in rat. Histological and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) analyses after 6 weeks of implantation revealed that the mineralized scaffolds possess excellent in vivo osteogenic potential compared to the non-mineralized one. Collectively, by using surface silanized mesoporous NBG hybridization with collagen fibrillar network, we successfully introduced a new approach for developing novel bone-mimetic nanohydroxyapatite/collagen hybrid scaffolds that possess significant potential for bone tissue regeneration.

Magnetic hybrid gels for emulsified oil adsorption: an overview of their potential to solve environmental problems associated to petroleum spills

Hydrogels (HGs) based on gelatin and crosslinked with gum Arabic have been prepared by the thaw-freezing method, employing two different concentrations of gum Arabic (15 and 50% w/w). Magnetic gels or ferrogels (FGs) were prepared by applying the breath in method to incorporate iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles to the HG matrix. The obtained HG and FG were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM, and the FG composition was estimated by atomic absorption spectroscopy in terms of Fe content. The adsorption of crude oil onto HG and FG was explored achieving very satisfactory results. FG was regenerated by washing with toluene, maintaining efficiency of almost 90% after the fourth cycle. Equilibrium studies were performed to determine the capacity of the prepared FG for adsorption of crude oil from seawater synthetic solutions. The experiments were carried out as a function of different initial concentrations of oil residue (24 to 240 mg/L) exploring different contact times. Equilibrium data were found to fit very well with the Sips models. The kinetic data adsorption of oil onto the FG-15 was better fitted by a pseudo-second-order kinetic indicating that at the initial stages of adsorption, external mass transfer could control the whole rate of the crude oil uptake while intraparticle diffusion controlled the global rate of adsorption at later stages. The obtained results showed that the FG prepared by employing 15% of gum Arabic as the crosslinker (FG-15) has a high removal efficiency of crude oil reaching 1.53 g/g of FG at pH 5.5 and 0.59 g/g for oil/water emulsions in the order of 0.1 g/L. The magnetic properties extend its application. The reached data suggest that the materials presented here may be useful to further the design of systems or devices intended for the remediation of petroleum spills and/or its derivatives in marine water as well as other surfaces such as polluted rocks or soil.

Multifunctional magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: diverse synthetic approaches, surface modifications, cytotoxicity towards biomedical and industrial applications

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) play a major role in the emerging fields of nanotechnology to facilitate rapid advancements in biomedical and industrial platforms. The superparamagnetic properties of MIONPs and their environment friendly synthetic methods with well-defined particle size have become indispensable to obtain their full potential in a variety of applications ranging from cellular to diverse areas of biomedical science. Thus, the broadened scope and need for MIONPs in their demanding fields of applications required to be highlighted for a comprehensive understanding of their state-of-the-art. Many synthetic methods, however, do not entirely abolish their undesired cytotoxic effects caused by free radical production and high iron dosage. In addition, the agglomeration of MIONPs has also been a major problem. To alleviate these issues, suitable surface modification strategies adaptive to MIONPs has been suggested not only for the effective cytotoxicity control but also to minimize their agglomeration. The surface modification using inorganic and organic polymeric materials would represent an efficient strategy to utilize the diagnostic and therapeutic potentials of MIONPs in various human diseases including cancer. This review article elaborates the structural and magnetic properties of MIONPs, specifically magnetite, maghemite and hematite, followed by the important synthetic methods that can be exploited for biomedical approaches. The in vivo cytotoxic effects and the possible surface modifications employed to eliminate the cytotoxicity thereby enhancing the nanoparticle efficacy are also critically discussed. The roles and applications of surface modified MIONPs in medical and industrial platforms have been described for the benefits of global well-being.

Indolocarbazole based polymer coated super adsorbent polyurethane sponges for oil/organic solvent removal

The synthesis of an indolocarbazole-fluorene based conjugated polymer (ICZP6), by Sonogashira coupling reaction, has been presented. The ICZP6 has then been integrated with a nano iron oxide embedded polyurethane foam (ICZP6PUF) to develop a promising adsorbent for oil/organic contaminants in aqueous systems. The anchoring ability of ICZP6 on to iron oxide PU sponge switches on significant hydrophobicity within the whole molecular assembly. The cooperative effects of ICZP6-iron oxide- PU sponge system have been highlighted in terms of structural, microscopic and wettability characteristics. The heterogeneity and hierarchical porous structure of the system offer a high adsorption capability for different types of oils and organic contaminants in water, typically in the range of 100-240 gg^-1. The performance of ICZP6PUF has been confirmed by the fast (within 5-10s) and choosy removal of selected oils and organic solvents from polluted water with the aid of an external magnetic field. The adsorbed materials (oil/organic solvents) can be separated from the adsorbent by simple mechanical squeezing without causing any structural deformation or performance deterioration; with a reusability of the system over 50 cycles. The adsorption isotherm has been found to fit well with the Langmuir model with R² = 0.9484. To extent the scope of the ICZP6PUF hybrid, an integrative logic gate has been designed.

A Comparison between the Oil Removal Capacity of Polymer-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles in Natural and Synthetic Environmental Samples

Oil spills can have dramatic impacts on the environment. The limitations of current oil remediation techniques have inspired researchers to study the application of nanotechnology for oil cleanup. Previously, we reported essentially 100% removal of a reference MC252 oil using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) from oil-water mixtures under a wide range of environmentally relevant conditions. Our previous results showed that in the synthetic water samples, the concentration of cations and natural organic macromolecules (NOM) can significantly affect the oil removal efficiency of NPs. Here, we studied the application of these NPs for oil removal from natural freshwater samples and compared the results with the synthetic water samples with the same concentrations of major ions and NOM. For both natural and synthetic samples, concentrations of NOM, calcium, and magnesium were positively correlated with oil removal ( p-value <0.05). NPs show an average of 30% higher oil removal efficiency from natural samples compared to the synthetic samples. Using up to 50 ppm of NP, essentially 100% oil removal was observed under most conditions specially hardwater samples (initial 0.15 g L^-1 oil concentration). Results show that these NPs are a facile and reliable technique for removing oil under realistic conditions.

Tailor-made synthesis of an melamine-based aminal hydrophobic polymer for selective adsorption of toxic organic pollutants: an initiative towards wastewater purification

A cost-effective melamine-based polyaminal covalent polymer (CPCMERI-2) has been prepared by a facile synthetic approach using the solvothermal condensation reaction and characterized by solid-state analytical tools like 13C NMR, PXRD, N2 sorption isotherm and FT-IR. The electron-rich moieties in the skeletal backbone induce hydrophobicity in the polymer with an appreciable water contact angle of 130°. AFM study establishes the plausible reason for the hydrophobicity. On account of its high thermal and chemical stability, the polymer CPCMERI-2 has been projected as a next-generation sorbent material for oil-like materials, and executed liquid-phase adsorption of kerosene over water surface. CPCMERI-2 selectively adsorbs kerosene and has a feeble adsorption affinity towards diesel and some other organic solvents like chloroform, benzene, nitrobenzene, and toluene. To improve the bio-compatibility and cost effectiveness of the material, a bio-waste material like the peel of Citrus limetta is used in the composite material, and it unveils a new avenue towards exploring the use of naturally abundant bio-material peels as low-cost sorbent materials. Additionally, CPCMERI-2 has gained attention due to its enormous potential in wastewater purification, which has also been tested in a lab-scale experimental setup. We expect that this material (CPCMERI-2) will harbinger a new type of composite polymer, wherein naturally abundant waste bio-materials could be used as precursors to explore its usefulness as an adsorbent for the removal of oils and organic pollutants.

A Facile Approach to Fabricate Dual Purpose Hybrid Materials for Tissue Engineering and Water Remediation

Creating hybrid materials with multifunctionality and robust mechanical stability from natural resources is a challenging proposition in materials science. Here, we report the scalable synthesis of hybrid collagen scaffolds using collagen extracted from leather industry wastes and sago starch derived from agro-industry. The hybrid scaffolds were incorporated with TiO2 nanoparticles and cross-linked with oxidized sago starch. The biocompatibility, thermal stability and antimicrobial property of hybrid scaffold enabled its application in burn wound healing demonstrated through albino rat models. The highly porous hybrid scaffolds are shown to be super-compressible, which is typically forbidden in materials of biological origin. We demonstrate that the hybrid scaffolds concurrently display both adsorption and absorption behavior in the removal of oil and dye molecules, respectively from contaminated water. This study paves the way for the development of novel multifunctional and shape recoverable hybrid materials specifically from renewable resources.

Superhydrophilic fluorinated polyarylate membranes via in situ photocopolymerization and microphase separation for efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsion

A superhydrophilic modified fluorinated polyarylate membrane with high tensile strength was prepared by a combination of in situ photocopolymerization and microphase separation. The as-prepared membrane was successfully utilized for oil-in-water emulsion separation with high separation efficiency and high flux. Furthermore, the membrane displayed excellent antifouling performance and recyclability for long-term use.

A collagen based cryogel bioscaffold coated with nanostructured polydopamine as a platform for mesenchymal stem cell therapy

Cryo-hydrogels (cryogels) are polymer hydrogels formed at sub-zero temperatures. Bioscaffolds created from cryogels have interconnected macropores which allow for cell migration, tissue-ingrowth, unhindered diffusion of solutes and mass transport of therapeutics. In this study, we developed collagen based cryogel bioscaffolds and coated them with polydopamine using a simple two-step technique. Cryogel bioscaffolds were synthesized by collagen crosslinking at -20°C and exhibited a macroporous interconnected architecture with 75% ± 3% porosity. Two groups of pore sizes were observed: 300 ± 50 µm and 30 ± 10 µm in diameter. The addition of a polydopamine coating to cryogel bioscaffolds was confirmed using composition analysis. This resulted in a 41% ± 5% decrease in water uptake, 81% ± 10% decrease in swelling rate and 12% ± 3% decrease in their degree of dissolution (p < 0.05), with a 48% ± 2% increase in stiffness and 57% ± 5% increase in compressive strength (p < 0.05). Seeding adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) into polydopamine coated-cryogel bioscaffolds resulted in cells demonstrating a 52% ± 4% increase in viability and 33% ± 3% increase in proliferation when compared to AD-MSCs seeded into uncoated-cryogel bioscaffolds (p < 0.05). In summary, our novel polydopamine coated-cryogel bioscaffold represents an efficient and low-cost bioscaffold platform to support MSC therapies. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Magnetically Modified Agricultural and Food Waste: Preparation and Application

The annual food and agricultural waste production reaches enormous numbers. Therefore, an increasing need to valorize produced wastes arises. Waste materials originating from the food and agricultural industry can be considered as functional materials with interesting properties and broad application potential. Moreover, using an appropriate magnetic modification, smart materials exhibiting a rapid response to an external magnetic field can be obtained. Such materials can be easily and selectively separated from desired environments. Magnetically responsive waste derivatives of biological origins have already been prepared and used as efficient biosorbents for the isolation and removal of both biologically active compounds and organic and inorganic pollutants and radionuclides, as biocompatible carriers for the immobilization of diverse types of (bio)molecules, cells, nano- and microparticles, or (bio)catalysts. Potential bactericidal, algicidal, or anti-biofilm properties of magnetic waste composites have also been tested. Furthermore, low cost and availability of waste biomaterials in larger amounts predetermine their utilization in large-scale processes.

Novel multifunctional cheese-like 3D carbon-BN as a highly efficient adsorbent for water purification

In this paper, a novel three dimensional carbon boron nitride (3D C-BN) was successfully prepared. The obtained material has porous cheese-like structure and pore size ranging from 2 nm to 100 nm. Attractively, the 3D C-BN, which combines the adsorption advantages of BN and carbon together, exhibits excellent adsorption properties for organic dyes, oils and heavy metal ions. The maximum removal capacities of 3D C-BN for methyl blue (MB) and congo red (CR) are 408 mg g⁻¹ and 307 mg g⁻¹, respectively. Furthermore, 3D C-BN can quickly and efficiently remove oils (salad oil, gasoline and pump oil) and heavy metal ions (Cr³⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺) from waste water. The macro bulk 3D C-BN, which is more convenient to use than powdered materials, can be reused by burning or heating in air and still maintains high adsorption capacity. Significantly, these superior performances can find practical application in water purification.

Bifunctional Hybrid Composites from Collagen Biowastes for Heterogeneous Applications

We report the synthesis of an electrically conductive and magnetically active hybrid biocomposite comprising collagen and polyaniline (PAni) as the matrix and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) as the filler through an in situ polymerization technique. Here, the matrix biopolymer, collagen, was extracted from trimmed wastes of animal hides generated from the leather industry. The as-synthesized C/PAni/IONP hybrid biocomposite powder possesses excellent electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and saturation magnetization, thereby providing scope for a wide range of applications. We show that the bifunctional composite has an ability to conduct electrons using a light emitting diode and battery setup, degrade dye under sunlight owing to its inherent photocatalytic activity, and absorb oil from oil-water mixtures with easier collection under magnetic tracking. We also demonstrate that the composite has remarkable electromagnetic interference shielding in the X-band frequency range. The results suggest that biowastes can be converted into useful high-value hybrid materials for applications in catalysis, biological, electronic, and environmental fields, thereby presenting a scalable and sustainable approach.

Magnetic carbon composites with a hierarchical structure for adsorption of tetracycline, prepared from sugarcane bagasse via hydrothermal carbonization coupled with simple heat treatment process

Sugarcane bagasse, an agricultural waste, was successfully converted into novel magnetic carbon composites by low temperature hydrothermal carbonization at 230°C for 24h, followed by heat treatment at 400°C for only 1h in air. Effects of NaOH and iron loading on the chemical properties of the composites were studied. In addition, various techniques were employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the composites. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated with tetracycline (TC) for the magnetic composites. The magnetic carbon composite exhibited 48.35mg/g maximum adsorption capacity and was highly stable chemically and mechanically, with also good magnetic properties. The adsorption of TC by the magnetic adsorbent was mainly attributed to H-bonds and π-π interactions. The results indicate that waste sugarcane bagasse from the sugar industries can be efficiently transformed to a magnetic adsorbent for TC removal via a facile environmentally friendly method.

Polymer/reduced graphene oxide functionalized sponges as superabsorbents for oil removal and recovery

Polyurethane dish-washing (PU-DW) sponges are functionalized sequentially with polyethylenimine (PEI) and graphene oxide (GO) to form PEI/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) PU-DW sponges. The PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge consists of PEI/RGO sheets having numerous pores, with diameters ranging from 236 to 254nm. To further enhance hydrophobicity and absorption capacity of oil, PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge is further coated with 20% phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMOS). The PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge absorbs various oils within 20s, with maximum absorption capacity values of 880% and 840% for bicycle chain oil and motorcycle engine oil, respectively. The absorbed oils were released completely by squeezing or immersed in hexane. The PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge efficiently separates oil/water mixtures through a flowing system. Having the advantages of faster absorption rate, reusability, and low cost, the PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge holds great potential as a superabsorbent for efficient removal and recovery of oil spills as well as for the separation of oil/water mixtures.
