Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2.7-5.9% and is thought to correlate with altered neuroplasticity. The aim of the present study is to investigate possible associations of BPD (-severity) and alterations in neurological soft signs (NSS) and olfactory function. METHODS For the monocentric observational study, 39 female subjects with a BPD diagnosis and 19 female healthy control subjects were recruited. The groups were matched by age. Olfactory functions were examined using Sniffin' Sticks. NSS were assessed by a standardized test with 50 items. RESULTS BPD subjects have higher NSS scores in group comparison. By contrast, there are no alterations in the total score of olfactory function, while the BPD subjects scored higher in smell identification. Within the BPD group, the total NSS score was discovered to have a negative correlation with olfactory function. BPD subjects taking antipsychotics show more NSS than those without. We found no significant influence of posttraumatic stress disorder on the NSS or olfactory function. The BPD-severity correlates with NSS. LIMITATIONS Due to the cross-sectional design, we did not have a follow up examination. The sample size was small, and all patients had psychiatric comorbidities. Additionally, we did not perform MRI to connect our findings with possible structural abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirmed altered NSS in BPD patients, whereas no impairment in the olfactory function was found. Further research is required to establish NSS and smell tests as clinical screening tools in BPD patients and to uncover the disorder's impact on neuroplasticity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric condition often accompanied by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with a substantial prevalence of trauma history among affected individuals. The clinical, cognitive, and cerebral parallels shared with PTSD suggest a trauma-related etiology for BPD. Studies consistently demonstrate a reduction in hippocampal volume in individuals with BPD, echoing findings in PTSD. However, the interpretation of this shared neurobiological profile remains contentious, with ongoing debates regarding the independence of these pathologies or the potential exacerbation of diminished hippocampal volume in BPD due to concurrent PTSD. Differential impacts on hippocampal subfields across both disorders may further complicate interpretation, suggesting the volume of hippocampal subfields as a potential discriminant biomarker. This study aims to characterize the multidimensional specific and shared profiles of BPD and PTSD-related alterations, with a particular emphasis on hippocampal subfields during adolescence, a crucial period in BPD development. METHODS This study focuses on female adolescents, who are more prevalent in the BPD population. Participants are categorized into three groups: BPD, BPD with comorbid PTSD, and a control group of matched healthy individuals. Data collection encompasses clinical, cognitive, and neuroimaging domains commonly affected in both disorders, utilizing various imaging markers (including gray matter macrostructure, white matter microstructural integrity, and regional functional connectivity). DISCUSSION This study examines adolescent BPD with and without comorbid PTSD on clinical, neuroimaging, and cognitive levels. It is the first to use a comprehensive multi-modal approach within the same sample. Additionally, it uniquely explores hippocampal subfield volume differences in adolescents. Analysis of the relationship between the investigated domains and the effects of PTSD comorbidity will elucidate specific and shared alteration profiles in both disorders. Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively affect the function and structure of emotion brain circuits, increasing the risk of various psychiatric disorders. It is unclear if ACEs show disorder specificity with respect to their effects on brain structure. We aimed to investigate whether the structural brain effects of ACEs differ between patients with major depression (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). These disorders share many symptoms but likely have different etiologies. To achieve our goal, we obtained structural 3T-MRI images from 20 healthy controls (HC), 19 MDD patients, and 18 BPD patients, and measured cortical thickness and subcortical gray matter volumes. We utilized the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) questionnaire to quantify self-reported exposure to childhood trauma. Our findings suggest that individuals with MDD exhibit a smaller cortical thickness when compared to those with BPD. However, ACEs showed a significantly affected relationship with cortical thickness in BPD but not in MDD. ACEs were found to be associated with thinning in cortical regions involved in emotional behavior in BPD, whereas HC showed an opposite association. Our results suggest a potential mechanism of ACE effects on psychopathology involving changes in brain structure. These findings highlight the importance of early detection and intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior is one of the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescents. Prior studies have shown that adolescents with BPD may have a unique pattern of brain alterations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the alterations in brain structure and function including gray matter volume and resting-state functional connectivity in adolescents with BPD, and to assess the association between NSSI behavior and brain changes on neuroimaging in adolescents with BPD. METHODS 53 adolescents with BPD aged 12-17 years and 39 age-gender matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled into this study. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was acquired with both 3D-T1 weighted structural imaging and resting-state functional imaging. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis for gray matter volume and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis were performed for assessing gray matter volume and FC. Clinical assessment for NSSI, mood, and depression was also obtained. Correlative analysis of gray matter alterations with self-injury or mood scales were performed. RESULTS There were reductions of gray matter volume in the limbic-cortical circuit and default mode network in adolescents with BPD as compared to HCs (FWE P < 0.05, cluster size ≥ 1000). The diminished gray matter volumes in the left putamen and left middle occipital gyrus were negatively correlated with NSSI in adolescents with BPD (r = - 0.277 and P = 0.045, r = - 0.422 and P = 0.002, respectively). Furthermore, there were alterations of FC in these two regions with diminished gray matter volumes (voxel P < 0.001, cluster P < 0.05, FWE corrected). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that diminished gray matter volume of the limbic-cortical circuit and default mode network may be an important neural correlate in adolescent BPD. In addition, the reduced gray matter volume and the altered functional connectivity may be associated with NSSI behavior in adolescents with BPD.

Abstract
Background: Emotional dysregulation is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Previous studies have reported that abnormal grey matter volume is associated with the limbic-cortical circuit and default mode network (DMN) in patients with BPD. However, alterations of cortical thickness in adolescents with BPD have not been well evaluated.Objective: The aim of this study was to assess cortical thickness and its association with emotional dysregulation in adolescents with BPD.Method: This prospective study enrolled 52 adolescents with BPD and 39 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). Assessments included brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition with structural and resting-state functional MRI data, and clinical assessment for emotional dysregulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Cortical thickness and seed-based functional connectivity were analysed with FreeSurfer 7.2 software. Correlation analysis between cortical thickness and the scores from emotional assessment was performed with Spearman analysis.Results: Compared to HCs, there was altered cortical thickness in the DMN and limbic-cortical circuit in adolescents with BPD (Monte Carlo correction, all p < .05). These regions with altered cortical thickness were significantly associated with emotional dysregulation (all p < .05). There were also alterations of functional connectivity, i.e. with increased connectivity of the right prefrontal cortex with bilateral occipital lobes, or with the limbic system, and with decreased connectivity among the DMN regions (voxel p < .001, cluster p < .05, family-wise error corrected).Conclusions: Our results suggest that the altered cortical thickness and altered functional connectivity in the limbic-cortical circuit and DMN may be involved in emotional dysregulation in adolescents with BPD.

Abstract
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the most diagnosed disorders in clinical settings. Besides the fully diagnosed disorder, borderline personality traits (BPT) are quite common in the general population. Prior studies have investigated the neural correlates of BPD but not of BPT. This paper investigates the neural correlates of BPT in a subclinical population using a supervised machine learning method known as Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR) to build predictive models. Additionally, we want to determine whether the same brain areas involved in BPD are also involved in subclinical BPT. Recent attempts to characterize the specific role of resting state-derived macro networks in BPD have highlighted the role of the default mode network. However, it is not known if this extends to the subclinical population. Finally, we wanted to test the hypothesis that the same circuitry that predicts BPT can also predict histrionic personality traits. Histrionic personality is sometimes considered a milder form of BPD, and making a differential diagnosis between the two may be difficult. For the first time KRR was applied to structural images of 135 individuals to predict BPT, based on the whole brain, on a circuit previously found to correctly classify BPD, and on the five macro-networks. At a whole brain level, results show that frontal and parietal regions, as well as the Heschl's area, the thalamus, the cingulum, and the insula, are able to predict borderline traits. BPT predictions increase when considering only the regions limited to the brain circuit derived from a study on BPD, confirming a certain overlap in brain structure between subclinical and clinical samples. Of all the five macro networks, only the DMN successfully predicts BPD, confirming previous observations on its role in the BPD. Histrionic traits could not be predicted by the BPT circuit. The results have implications for the diagnosis of BPD and a dimensional model of personality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate early diagnosis of adolescent borderline personality disorder (BPD) is critical for prompt treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the alteration of brain surface morphology and to evaluate its relationship with core features in adolescent BPD. METHODS A total of 52 adolescents with BPD aged 12-17 years and 39 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were prospectively enrolled into the study. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was obtained with both 3D-T1 weighted structural sequence and resting-state functional data. The structural data was analyzed for surface morphology parameters including the local gyrification index (LGI), mean curvature and surface area. The functional MRI data was analyzed for seed-based functional connectivity (FC). Correlative analysis of surface morphology and core features of adolescent BPD was performed. RESULTS Adolescents with BPD showed the following altered surface morphology in the limbic-cortical circuit when compared to the HCs: (1) reduced LGI in the left fusiform and right superior temporal gyrus; (2) reduced mean curvature in the left precentral gyrus and right rostral anterior cingulate cortex, and increased mean curvature in the bilateral pericalcarine; and (3) reduced surface area in the left paracentral gyrus, left pars triangularis, right insula and right lateral orbitofrontal gyrus (P < 0.05, FWE correction). In addition, these brain regions with altered surface morphology were significantly correlated with several core features including the mood instability, self-identity problems, and non-suicidal self-injury behavior in adolescents with BPD (P < 0.05). Furthermore, there was enhanced functional connectivity among these altered brain regions within the limbic-cortical circuit (voxel P < 0.001, cluster P < 0.05, FWE corrected). CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with BPD had significant alterations of brain surface morphology in the limbic-cortical circuit, which was correlated with core BPD features. These results implicated the surface morphology parameters and FC alterations may potentially serve as neuroimaging biomarkers for adolescents with BPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood trauma may cause borderline personality disorder (BPD). The aim of this study was to assess functional alteration and its association with childhood trauma in Chinese adolescents with BPD. METHODS A total of 187 adolescents with BPD aged 12-17 years and 207 age and gender- matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled into this study. The sample consisted of 50 adolescents with BPD and 21 HCs underwent brain resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The rs-fMRI data was analyzed for both neural activity as indicated by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and seed-based functional connectivity (FC). Clinical assessment for childhood trauma, impulsivity, and depression was also performed. Correlative analysis of functional alterations with childhood trauma assessment were performed. RESULTS Adolescents with BPD had significantly higher rate of all assessed childhood trauma than the HC group (P < 0.001). Most adolescents with BPD (61.5 %) had emotional neglect, which was the most commonly seen type of childhood trauma. Compared with HCs, adolescents with BPD showed decreased ALFF in the cortical regions including the left superior frontal gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus, and default mode network (DMN) regions including the left angular gyrus and medial superior frontal gyrus. Adolescents with BPD also showed enhanced ALFF in the limbic system (left hippocampus, insula, thalamus) (P < 0.05, FWE correction, cluster size ≥100). There were significant correlations between the insula ALFF and childhood trauma assessment for emotional neglect, physical abuse and physical neglect (P < 0.01). Moreover, adolescents with BPD showed increased FC between the left insula and right cortical regions (voxel P < 0.001, cluster P < 0.05, FWE correction). LIMITATIONS The sample size was small. This cohort had patients with more severe BPD symptoms and some had comorbidities such as anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. CONCLUSIONS There were alterations of brain activity as indicated by ALFF in the limbic - cortical circuit and DMN regions in adolescents with BPD and the activity in the left insula was correlated with emotional neglect. In addition, the FC between the left insula and the limbic - prefrontal circuit was enhanced. These results implicate that the functional alterations of insula may serve as a potential neuroimaging biomarker for adolescents with BPD who suffered from childhood trauma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents with borderline personality disorder often have cognitive impairment, but the underlying mechanism for this is not clear. This study was aimed at assessing alterations in regional homogeneity using resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) in adolescents with borderline personality disorder, and evaluating the associations between regional homogeneity and cognitive testing scores. METHODS We enrolled 50 adolescents with borderline personality disorder (age 12-17 years) and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We performed regional homogeneity and seed-based functional connectivity analysis for both groups. We also performed correlative analysis for regional homogeneity and cognitive testing scores. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, adolescents with borderline personality disorder had reduced regional homogeneity values in the frontal cortex (including the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex and the bilateral superior frontal cortex) as well as in the left precuneus in the default mode network. Adolescents with borderline personality disorder also had higher regional homogeneity values in several cortical regions: the right middle temporal gyrus, the right cuneus, the right precentral gyrus and the left middle occipital gyrus. Regional homogeneity values in the left middle occipital gyrus, left inferior orbitofrontal cortex and right superior frontal gyrus were associated with cognitive testing scores in adolescents with borderline personality disorder. We also found increased functional connectivity between the left middle occipital gyrus and right superior frontal gyrus in adolescents with borderline personality disorder. LIMITATIONS This study had a modest sample size, with a possible case selection bias for patients with more severe illness. This cohort also included patients with comorbidities or taking psychotropic medications, which may have confounded study results. CONCLUSION Alterations in regional homogeneity and functional connectivity in brain regions that involve the limbic-cortical circuit could be neural correlates for cognitive impairment in adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

Abstract
In recent years, many studies have focused on resting-state brain activity, and especially on functional connectivity (FC), an approach that typically describes the statistical interdependence of activity in distant brain regions through specific networks. Our aim was to study the neurophysiological correlates of emotion dysregulation. Therefore, we expected that both the Default Mode Network (DMN), and the Ventral Attention Network (VAN) would have been involved. Indeed, the latter plays a role in the automatic orienting of attention towards biologically salient stimuli and includes key regions for emotion control and modulation. Starting from a community sample of 422 female students, we selected 25 women with high traits of emotion dysregulation (HD group) and 25 with low traits (LD group). They underwent a 64-channel EEG recording during a five-minute resting state with eyes open. Seed-based FC was computed on the EEG Alpha band (8-13 Hz) as a control band, and on EEG Gamma power (30-50 Hz) as the relevant measure. The power within each network and inter-network connectivity (Inter-NC) was also calculated. Analysis of the EEG Gamma band revealed, in the HD group, higher levels of Inter-NC between the VAN and all other resting-state networks as compared with the LD group, while no differences emerged in the Alpha band. Concerning correlations, Alpha power in the VAN was negatively correlated in the HD group with affective lability (ALS-18 questionnaire), both for total score (ρ = -0.52, p FDR < 0.01) and the Depression/Elation subscale) ρ = -0.45, p FDR < 0.05). Consistent with this, in the Gamma band, a positive correlation was found between VAN spectral power and the Depression/Elation subscale of ALS-18, again in the HD group only (ρ = 0.47, p FDR < 0.05). In conclusion, both resting state FC and network power in the VAN were found to be related to high emotion dysregulation, even in our non-clinical sample with high traits. Emotion dysregulation was characterized, in the EEG gamma band, by a VAN strongly connected to all other networks, a result that points, in women prone to emotion dysregulation, to a strong automatic orienting of attention towards their internal state, bodily sensations, and emotionally intense related thoughts.

Abstract
Previous studies examining structural brain correlates of irritability have taken a region-specific approach and have been relatively inconsistent. In a sample of adolescents with and without clinically impairing irritability, the current study examines: (i) cortical volume (CV) in canonical functional networks; (ii) the association between the CV of functional networks and severity of irritability; and (iii) the extent to which IQ mediates the association between structural abnormalities and severity of irritability. Structural MRI and IQ data were collected from 130 adolescents with high irritability (mean age = 15.54±1.83 years, 58 females, self-reported Affective Reactivity Index [ARI] ≥ 4) and 119 adolescents with low irritability (mean age = 15.10±1.93 years, 39 females, self-reported ARI < 4). Subject-specific network-wise CV was estimated after parcellating the whole brain into 17 previously reported functional networks. Our Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) revealed that adolescents with high irritability had significantly reduced CV of the bilateral control and default-mode networks (p < 0.05) relative to adolescents with low irritability. Multiple regression analyses showed a significant negative association between the control network CV and the severity of irritability. Mediation analysis showed that IQ partially mediated the association between the control network CV and the severity of irritability. Follow-up analysis on subcortical volume (SCV) showed that adolescents with high irritability had reduced bilateral SCV within the amygdala relative to adolescents with low irritability. Reduced CV within bilateral control and default networks and reduced SCV within bilateral amygdala may represent core features of the pathophysiology of irritability. The current data also indicate the potential importance of a patient's IQ in determining how pathophysiology related to the control network is expressed.

Abstract
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric disorder accompanied by multiple comorbidities. Neuroimaging studies have identified structural abnormalities in BPD with most findings pointing to gray matter volume reductions in the fronto-limbic network, although results remain inconsistent. Similar alterations were found in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a common comorbidity of BPD. Only a small number of studies have investigated structural differences in BPD patients regarding comorbid PTSD specifically and studies conducting additional surface analyses are scarce. We investigated structural differences in women with BPD with and without PTSD and non-patient controls. Automated voxel-based and region-based volumetric analyses were applied. Additionally, four surface-based measures were analyzed: cortical thickness, gyrification index, fractal dimension, and sulcus depth. Analyses did not identify cortical volume alterations in the fronto-limbic network. Instead, hypergyrification was detected in the right superior parietal cortex in BPD patients compared to non-patient controls. No distinction was revealed between BPD patients with and without PTSD. These findings underline the importance of a holistic investigation examining volumetric and surface measures as these might enhance the understanding of structural alterations in BPD.

Abstract
Borderline personality disorder (BorPD) is characterized by instability and mood dysregulation, unstable relationships and distorted self-image. Identification of underlying anatomical and physiological changes is crucial to refine current treatments and develop new ones. In this perspective, previous magnetic resonance imaging studies have highlighted alterations associated with BorPD phenotype. In particular, diffusion-weighted imaging/Diffusion tensor imaging (DWI/DTI) has identified many white matter structural alterations in individuals with this diagnosis. Although in its infancy, limiting this line of investigation is a lack of direction at the field level. Hence, the present paper aims to conduct a meta-analysis of DWI/DTI findings in individuals with a diagnosis of BorPD, testing the hypothesis that there are specific white matter alterations associated with BorPD. To this end, we performed a meta-analysis of the existing literature of DWI/DTI in BorPD representing a total of 123 individuals with BorPD and 117 Controls. Our results indicated that individuals with BorPD show regions of reduced fractional anisotropy in the corpus callosum and fornix. These results survived all jack-knife reshuffles and showed no publication bias. This suggests that alterations in these structures may contribute to psychopathology. Further, the present results lend support to extant psychological and biological models of BorPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are severe psychiatric disorders and often co-occur, either of the two will seriously threaten to public health. However, we lack ample evidences to understand the potential pathophysiologic mechanisms of gray matter (GM) alterations in the two disorders. METHODS We performed a meta-analysis in both BPD (15 datasets including 442 BPD subjects versus 441 healthy controls) and PTSD (11 datasets including 214 PTSD subjects versus 258 healthy controls) applying anisotropic effect-size-based algorithms (AES-SDM) method. RESULTS Conjunction analysis found relative GM volume reductions in both disorders in the orbitofrontal gyrus and anterior cingulate cortex, contrarily, differences were predominantly observed that GM volume increased in the posterior cingulate gyrus and precuneus in BPD subjects, and GM volume decreased in the amygdala-hippocampal fear circuit, fusiform gyrus in PTSD subjects. CONCLUSIONS Group comparisons and conjunction analyses in BPD and PTSD identified same regions of GM volume reductions in the orbitofrontal gyrus and anterior cingulate cortex, which may provide clues for the neurobiological mechanisms and clinical diagnosis underpinning two disorders.

Abstract
Problems with interpersonal relationships are often a chief complaint among those seeking psychiatric treatment; yet heterogeneity and homogeneity across disorders suggests both common and unique mechanisms of impaired interpersonal relationships. Basic science research has begun yielding insights into how the brain responds to social feedback. Understanding how these processes differ as a function of psychopathology can begin to inform the mechanisms that give rise to such interpersonal dysfunction, potentially helping to identify differential treatment targets. We reviewed 46 studies that measured the relationship between brain responses to social feedback and internalizing psychopathology. We found that socially relevant anxiety was associated with amygdala hyperactivity to the anticipation of social feedback. Depression was related to hyperreactivity of regions in the cingulo-opercular network to negative social feedback. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) was associated with hyperactivity of regions in the default mode network to negative social feedback. The review also identified key insights into methodological limitations and potential future directions for the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder is associated with severe psychiatric presentations and has been linked to variability in brain structure. Dimensional models of borderline personality traits (BPTs) have become influential; however, associations between BPTs and brain structure remain poorly understood. METHODS We tested whether BPTs are associated with regional cortical thickness, cortical surface area, and subcortical volumes (n = 152 brain structure metrics) in data from the Duke Neurogenetics Study (n = 1299) and Human Connectome Project (n = 1099). Positive control analyses tested whether BPTs are associated with related behaviors (e.g., suicidal thoughts and behaviors, psychiatric diagnoses) and experiences (e.g., adverse childhood experiences). RESULTS While BPTs were robustly associated with all positive control measures, they were not significantly associated with any brain structure metrics in the Duke Neurogenetics Study or Human Connectome Project, or in a meta-analysis of both samples. The strongest findings from the meta-analysis showed a positive association between BPTs and volumes of the left ventral diencephalon and thalamus (p values < .005 uncorrected, p values > .1 false discovery rate-corrected). Contrasting high and low BPT decile groups (n = 552) revealed no false discovery rate-significant associations with brain structure. CONCLUSIONS We find replicable evidence that BPTs are not associated with brain structure despite being correlated with independent behavioral measures. Prior reports linking brain morphology to borderline personality disorder may be driven by factors other than traits (e.g., severe presentations, comorbid conditions, severe childhood adversity, or medication) or reflect false positives. The etiology or consequences of BPTs may not be attributable to brain structure measured via magnetic resonance imaging. Future studies of BPTs will require much larger sample sizes to detect these very small effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intermittent explosive outbursts (IEO), manifesting as sudden episodes of verbal or physical aggression, are frequently present in patients with Tourette disorder (TD) and considered as one of the most disabling symptoms by patients and families. The neuronal correlates of these behaviours are poorly understood, and this was the primary objective of the present study. METHODS We assessed the presence of IEO in 55 patients with TD and then compared the subgroup of the patients with IEO to those without these manifestations using a multimodal neuroimaging approach. RESULTS 47% of TD patients presented IEO, which was frequently associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). TD patients (without ADHD) with IEO compared to TD without IEO, showed structural changes in the right supplementary motor area as well as in the right hippocampus (increased fractional anisotropy), and in the left orbitofrontal cortex (decreased mean diffusivity). Using these three nodes as seeds for resting state functional connectivity, we showed a lower connectivity within the sensori-motor cortico-basal ganglia network, and an altered connectivity pattern among the orbito-frontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our results indicate that TD with IEO is associated with brain dysfunction related to a less efficient top-down control on action selection, and impairments related to emotional regulation, impulse control and aggressive behaviours.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects 1-5% of the population and is characterized by a complex symptomatology and selective functional impairments. Although brain imaging studies have contributed to better characterizing the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying BPD, the white matter (WM) deficits associated with this disorder are still unclear. Therefore, the present review aims at providing an overview of the findings emerged from the available diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies on BPD. METHODS From a bibliographic research in PubMed until May 2019, we collected 12 studies that fulfilled our inclusion criteria, including a total sample of 291 BPD subjects and 293 healthy controls. RESULTS Overall, the DTI studies reviewed showed impairments in selective WM tracts that are part of the prefronto-limbic system, including frontal WM (short and long tracts), anterior cingulate cortex, corpus callosum, corona radiata, hippocampal fornix and thalamic radiation, in BPD patients compared to healthy controls. LIMITATIONS Few DTI studies with heterogeneous findings. CONCLUSIONS Overall these results reported that BPD is characterized by selective structural connectivity alterations in prefronto-limbic structures, further supporting the neurobiological model of BPD that suggests the presence of an abnormal modulation of frontal regions over limbic structures. Finally, the results also highlighted that the disrupted WM integrity in selective brain regions may also explain key-aspects of BPD symptomatology, including emotional dysregulation, ambivalence, contradictory behaviors and cognitive dysfunctions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) presents with symptoms across different domains, whose neurobiology is poorly understood. METHODS We applied voxel-based morphometry on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging scans of 19 female BPD patients and 50 matched female controls. RESULTS Group comparison showed bilateral orbitofrontal gray matter loss in patients, but no significant changes in the hippocampus. Voxel-wise correlation of gray matter with symptom severity scores from the Borderline Symptom List (BSL-95) showed overall negative correlation in bilateral prefrontal, right inferior temporal/fusiform and occipital cortices, and left thalamus. Significant (negative) correlations with BSL-95 subscores within the patient cohort linked autoaggression to left lateral prefrontal and insular cortices, right inferior temporal/temporal pole, and right orbital cortex; dysthymia/dysphoria to right orbitofrontal cortex; self-perception to left postcentral, bilateral inferior/middle temporal, right orbitofrontal, and occipital cortices. Schema therapy-based Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S2) scores of early maladaptive schemas on emotional deprivation were linked to left medial temporal lobe gray matter reductions. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm orbitofrontal structural deficits in BPD, while providing a framework and preliminary findings on identifying structural correlates of symptom dimensions in BPD, especially with dorsolateral and orbitofrontal cortices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder are the same or different disorders lacks consistency.AimsTo detect whether grey matter volume (GMV) and grey matter density (GMD) alterations show any similarities or differences between BPD and bipolar disorder. METHOD Web-based publication databases were searched to conduct a meta-analysis of all voxel-based studies that compared BPD or bipolar disorder with healthy controls. We included 13 BPD studies (395 patients with BPD and 415 healthy controls) and 47 bipolar disorder studies (2111 patients with bipolar disorder and 3261 healthy controls). Peak coordinates from clusters with significant group differences were extracted. Effect-size signed differential mapping meta-analysis was performed to analyse peak coordinates of clusters and thresholds (P < 0.005, uncorrected). Conjunction analyses identified regions in which disorders showed common patterns of volumetric alteration. Correlation analyses were also performed. RESULTS Patients with BPD showed decreased GMV and GMD in the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex network (mPFC), bilateral amygdala and right parahippocampal gyrus; patients with bipolar disorder showed decreased GMV and GMD in the bilateral medial orbital frontal cortex (mOFC), right insula and right thalamus, and increased GMV and GMD in the right putamen. Multi-modal analysis indicated smaller volumes in both disorders in clusters in the right medial orbital frontal cortex. Decreased bilateral mPFC in BPD was partly mediated by patient age. Increased GMV and GMD of the right putamen was positively correlated with Young Mania Rating Scale scores in bipolar disorder. CONCLUSIONS Our results show different patterns of GMV and GMD alteration and do not support the hypothesis that bipolar disorder and BPD are on the same affective spectrum.Declaration of interestNone.

Abstract
This article reviews the most salient neurobiological information available about borderline personality disorder (BPD) and presents a theoretic model for what lies at the heart of BPD that is grounded in those findings. It reviews the heritability, genetics, and the biological models of BPD, including the neurobiology of affective instability, impaired interoception, oxytocin and opiate models of poor attachment or interpersonal dysfunction, and structural brain imaging over the course of development in BPD; and posits that the core characteristic of BPD may be an impairment in emotional interoception or alexithymia.

In this study, combining degree centrality (DC) and fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) analyses of resting state (rs)-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, we aimed to explore functional connectivity density, local brain spontaneous activity, and their coupling strengths in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Forty-three BPD patients and 39 demographically-matched controls underwent rs-fMRI after completing a series of psychological tests. Two-sample t-tests were performed to compare DC and fALFF between these two groups. Across-voxel correlation analysis was conducted to assess DC-fALFF coupling strengths in each group. Imaging parameters and psychological variables were correlated by Pearson correlation analysis in the BPD group. Altered DC and fALFF values in the BPD group, compared with the control group, were distributed mainly in default mode network (DMN), and DC-fALFF coupling strengths were decreased in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and right precuneus in the BPD group. Additionally, insecure attachment scores correlated positively with left precuneus DC and negatively with fALFF of the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in the BPD group. These altered DC and fALFF findings indicate that the BPD patients had disturbed functional connectivity density and local spontaneous activity in the DMN compared with control subjects. Their decreased connectivity-amplitude coupling suggests that the left MTG and right precuneus may be functional impairment hubs in BPD. Disturbed rs function in the left precuneus and right PCC might underlie insecure attachment in BPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This resting-state fMRI study investigated thebrain function in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) with three data-driven algorithms. METHODS Forty BPD patients and thirty-five controls were enrolled and scanned with a 3.0T Philips Ingenia scanner. Rs-fMRI and structural images were preprocessed by DPARSF based on SPM8 on the MATLAB platform. To evaluate BPD related brain function alterations comprehensively, we analyzed the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and seed based functional connectivity (seed-based FC), three data-driven algorithms of rs-fMRI. Results were multiply corrected by REST AlphaSim program at the level of p<0.05. Meanwhile, the correlation between imaging and psychological data was also performed in BPD patients. RESULTS Compared with control group, BPD group showed decreased ALFF and ReHo both in the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and adjacent precuneus. With these two areas as seeds, disturbed functional connectivity mainly distributed in the frontotemporal and limbic structure in BPD group. There were no significant correlations found between imaging variables and psychological data. LIMITATIONS The sample size was relatively small, and no significant correlations were found between imaging variables and psychological data, which might limit the clinical application of these results. CONCLUSIONS Based on data-driven analysis, we discovered that the right PCC and precuneus were altered in resting state function in BPD. Combining with our previous Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM) study which has found increased gray matter volume (GMV) in the right PCC and precuneus, we confirmed that these two areas were core brain regions altered both in structure and function in BPD.
