On-Surface Stepwise Double Dehydrogenation for the Formation of a para-Quinodimethane-Containing Undecacene Isomer

The on-surface synthesis of an isomer of undecacene, bearing two four-membered rings and two para-quinodimethane moieties, starting from a tetramethyl-substituted diepoxy precursor, is presented. The transformation implies a thermal double deoxygenation followed by a stepwise double dehydrogenation reaction on the Au(111) surface, locally induced by inelastic tunneling electrons. This results in the transformation of para-dimethylbenzene moieties into non-aromatic para-quinodimethanes. The structures and electronic properties of the intermediate and final products are investigated at the single molecule level with high spatial resolution, using both scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. The experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations.

1,1'-Biolympicenyl: A Stable Non-Kekulé Diradical with a Small Singlet and Triplet Energy Gap

Dimerization of delocalized polycyclic hydrocarbon radicals is a simple and versatile method to create diradicals with tailored electronic structures and accessible high-spin states. However, the synthesis is challenging, and the stability issue of the diradicals remains a concern. In this study, we present the synthesis of a stable non-Kekulé 1,1'-biolympicenyl diradical 1 using a protection-oxidation-protection strategy. Diradical 1 demonstrated exceptional stability, with a solution half-life time exceeding 3.5 years and a solid state thermal decomposition temperature above 300 °C. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed its intersected molecular structure and tightly bound dimer configuration. A singlet ground state with a small singlet-triplet energy gap is consistently identified using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) in a rigid matrix, and the triplet state is thermally accessible at room temperature. The solution phase properties were systematically examined through EPR, absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, revealing a rotational motion in the slow-motion regime and multistage redox characteristics. This study presents an efficient synthetic and stabilization strategy for organic diradicals, enabling the development of various high-spin functional materials.

Synthesis of Diarylalkanes by Photoreductive 1,2-Diarylation of Alkenes with Aryl Halides and Cyanoaromatics

We report a visible light-induced photoreductive strategy for three-component diarylation of alkenes with aryl halides and cyanoaromatics. Upon photoredox catalysis and with tertiary alkyl amines as the electron transfer agent, aryl halides selectively undergo halogen atom transfer to generate the aryl radicals and two C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds between the cabron atoms are created in a radical addition and radical-radical coupling fashion to rapidly assemble diverse functionalized polyarylalkanes with high regio- and chemoselectivity. This method can be applied to broad feedstocks, including terminal alkenes, internal alkenes, aryl iodides, aryl bromides, aryl chlorides, electron-deficient benzonitriles, and isonicotinonitriles.

Spin characteristics in conjugated stable diradicals

Spin properties are intrinsic characters of electrons. Radical molecules contain unpaired electron(s), and their unique chemical and physical properties make them an ideal platform for investigating spin properties in molecular systems. Among them, the burgeoning interest in stable conjugated diradicals is attributed to their distinctive characteristics, notably the dynamic resonance structures between open-shell and closed-shell forms, the malleability of their spin states, and the profound influence of intermolecular spin-spin interactions. A deep understanding of the spin characteristics of unpaired electrons in stable conjugated diradicals provides guidance for the design, synthesis, and characterization of radical-based materials. In this review, we discuss the unique spin delocalization, spin states, and spin-spin coupling characteristics of conjugated diradicals and emphasize how to precisely control these spin characteristics to understand their role in the molecules and as functional radical materials.

Novel Dissymmetric Formal Quinoidal Molecules End-Capped by Dicyanomethylene and Triphenylphosphonium

A number of quinoidal molecules with symmetric end-capping groups, particularly dicyanomethylene units, have been synthesized for organic optoelectronic materials. In comparison, dissymmetric quinoidal molecules, characterized by end-capping with different groups, are less explored. In this paper, we present the unexpected formation of new formal quinoidal molecules, which are end-capped with both dicyanomethylene and triphenylphosphonium moieties. The structures of these dissymmetric quinoidal molecules were firmly verified by single crystal structural analyses. On the basis of the control experiments and DFT calculations, we proposed the reaction mechanism for the formation of these dissymmetric quinoidal molecules. The respective zwitterionic forms should make contributions to the ground state structures of these quinoidal molecules based on the analysis of their bond lengths and aromaticity and Mayer Bond Orbital (MBO) calculation. This agrees well with the fact that negative solvatochromism was observed for these quinoidal molecules. Although these new quinoidal molecules are non-emissive both in solutions and crystalline states, they become emissive with quantum yields up to 51.4 % after elevating the solvent viscosity or dispersing them in a PMMA matrix. Interestingly, their emissions can also be switched on upon binding with certain proteins, in particular with human serum albumin.

Needlestick-Stimulation-Induced Conversion of Short-Wave Infrared-Light Transparency Using a Liquescent Radical Anion

A liquescent salt consisting of a 7,7,8,8-tetracyanquinodimethane (TCNQ) radical anion and a tetra-n-decylammonium ion, 1+•TCNQ•-, exhibits rapid changes in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) light transparency at 1000-1400 nm upon the application of a one-shot needlestick-stimulus. Radical anion salt 1+•TCNQ•- transforms from a blue solid to a green liquid at 90 °C without decomposition under aerated conditions, and remains in the liquid state upon cooling to 70 °C. After applying pressure with a needlestick on a cover glass at 70 °C, the liquid transforms rapidly into the solid state over a timescale of seconds across a centimeter scale of area. Along with the liquid-solid transition, the SWIR-light transparency at 1200 nm completely switches from the "on" to the "off" states. Experimental results, such as electronic spectra and crystal structure analysis, indicates that the SWIR-light absorption in the solid state is due to the existence of a slipped-stacking π-dimer structure for TCNQ•-. The rapid rearrangement is induced by the formation of the π-dimer structures from the monomers of TCNQ•- and the subsequent generations of the solid-state seed.

Near-infrared luminescent open-shell π-conjugated systems with a bright lowest-energy zwitterionic singlet excited state

Open-shell systems with extensive π-conjugation have fascinating properties due to their narrow bandgaps and spin interactions. In this work, we report neutral open-shell di- and polyradical conjugated materials exhibiting intriguing optical and magnetic properties. Our key design advance is the planarized geometry allowing for greater interaction between adjacent spins. This results in absorption and emission in the near infrared at 803 and 1050 nanometers, respectively, and we demonstrate a unique electronic structure where a bright zwitterionic excited state is the lowest-accessible electronic transition. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal that our materials are open-shell singlets with different degrees of spin interactions, dynamics, and antiferromagnetic properties, which likely contributed to the formation of their emissive zwitterionic singlet excited state and near-infrared emission. In addition, our materials show reversible and stable electrochromic switching with more than 500 cycles, indicating their potential for optoelectronic and electrochemical energy storage applications.

On the nature of Cu-carbon interaction through N-modification for enhanced ethanol synthesis from syngas and methanol

Direct conversion of syngas into ethanol is an attractive process because of its short route and high-added value, but remains an enormous challenge due to the low selectivity caused by unclear active sites. Here, the Cu(111) supported N-modified graphene fragments C13-mNm/Cu(111) (m = 0-2) are demonstrated to be an efficient catalyst for fabricating ethanol from syngas and methanol. Our results suggest that the Cu-carbon interaction not only facilitates CO activation, but also significantly affects the adsorption stability of C2 intermediates and finally changes the fundamental reaction mechanism. The impeded hydrogenation performance of C13/Cu(111) due to the introduced Cu-carbon interaction is dramatically improved by N-doping. Multiple analyses reveal that the promoted electron transfer and the enhanced electron endowing ability of C13-mNm/Cu(111) (m = 1-2) to the co-adsorbed CH3CHxOH (x = 0-1) and H are deemed to be mainly responsible for the remarkable enhancement in hydrogenation ability. From the standpoint of the frontier molecular orbital, the decreased HOMO-LUMO gap and the increased overlap extent of HOMO and LUMO with the doping of N atoms also further verify the more facile hydrogenation reactions. Clearly, the Cu-carbon interaction through N-modification is of critical importance in ethanol formation. The final hydrogenation reaction during ethanol formation is deemed to be the rate-controlling step. The insights gained here could shed new light on the nature of Cu-carbon interaction in carbon material modified Cu-based catalysts for ethanol synthesis, which could be extended to design and modify other metal-carbon catalysts.

Helical polycyclic hydrocarbons with open-shell singlet ground states and ambipolar redox behaviors

Organic π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) with an open-shell diradical character are attracting increasing interest due to their promising applications in organic electronics and spintronics. However, most of the open-shell PHs synthesized thus far are based on planar π-conjugated molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two new quinodimethane-embedded expanded helicenes H1 and H2. The helical structures of both molecules were revealed using X-ray crystallographic analysis. It was elucidated in detailed experimental and theoretical studies that they possess an open-shell singlet biradical structure in the ground state and show a small energy gap and amphoteric redox behavior. Both compounds can also be easily oxidized or reduced into relatively stable charged species. The dianions of H1 and H2 exhibit similar electronic structures to the respective isoelectronic structures of their all-benzenoid helical analogues according to NMR measurements and theoretical calculations. Moreover, the structures of the dication and dianion of H2 were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing the effect of electron transfer on their backbones and aromaticity. This study thus opens up new avenues for both helical polycyclic π-systems and diradicaloids.

Bisindeno Fusion on the Zigzag Edge of Bis(benzooxa)-2,6-anthraquinodimethane: Effect on Diradical Character, Photostability, and Redox Properties

We report the synthesis of the bis(benzooxa)-2,6-anthraquinodimethane (BAQ) derivative and its bisindeno fused analogue BIBAQ. We found bisindeno fusion on the quinoidal zigzag edge of BAQ results in decreased diradical character and corresponding increased photostability. Furthermore, BAQ could only be oxidized into its cationic species, while BIBAQ showed balanced redox properties.

Highly entangled polyradical nanographene with coexisting strong correlation and topological frustration

Open-shell nanographenes exhibit unconventional π-magnetism arising from topological frustration or strong electron-electron interaction. However, conventional design approaches are typically limited to a single magnetic origin, which can restrict the number of correlated spins or the type of magnetic ordering in open-shell nanographenes. Here we present a design strategy that combines topological frustration and electron-electron interactions to fabricate a large fully fused 'butterfly'-shaped tetraradical nanographene on Au(111). We employ bond-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy and spin-excitation spectroscopy to resolve the molecular backbone and reveal the strongly correlated open-shell character, respectively. This nanographene contains four unpaired electrons with both ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions, harbouring a many-body singlet ground state and strong multi-spin entanglement, which is well described by many-body calculations. Furthermore, we study the magnetic properties and spin states in the nanographene using a nickelocene magnetic probe. The ability to imprint and characterize many-body strongly correlated spins in polyradical nanographenes paves the way for future advancements in quantum information technologies.

Unraveling the Nature of Spin Coupling in a Metal-Free Diradical: Theoretical Distinction of Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Interactions

Metal-free diradicals based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are promising candidates for organic spintronics due to their stable magnetism and tunable spin coupling. However, distinguishing and elucidating the origins of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in these systems remain challenging. Here, we investigate the 2-OS diradical molecule sandwiched between gold electrodes using a combined density functional theory and hierarchical equations of motion approach. We find that the dihedral angle between the radical moieties controls the nature and strength of the intramolecular spin coupling, transitioning smoothly from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic as the angle increases. Distinct features in the inelastic electron tunneling spectra are identified that can discern the two coupling regimes, including spin excitation steps whose energies directly reveal the exchange coupling constant. Mechanical stretching of the junction is predicted to modulate the spectral line shapes by adjusting the hybridization of the molecular radicals with the electrodes. Our work elucidates the electronic origin of tunable spin interactions in 2-OS and provides spectroscopic fingerprints for characterizing magnetism in metal-free diradicals.

In Silico Screening and Experimental Verification of Near-Infrared-Emissive Two-Boron-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Embedding two boron atoms into a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) leads to the formation of a neutral analogue that is isoelectronic to the corresponding dicationic PAH skeleton, which can significantly alter its electronic structure. Based on this concept, we explore herein the identification of near-infrared (NIR)-emissive PAHs with the aid of an in silico screening method. Using perylene as the PAH scaffold, we embedded two boron atoms and fused two thiophene rings to it. Based on this design concept, all possible structures (ca. 2500 entities) were generated using a comprehensive structure generator. Time-dependent DFT calculations were conducted on all these structures, and promising candidates were extracted based on the vertical excitation energy, transition dipole moment, and atomization energy per bond. One of the extracted dithieno-diboraperylene candidates was synthesized and indeed exhibited emission at 724 nm with a quantum yield of 0.40 in toluene, demonstrating the validity of this screening method. This modification was further applied to other PAHs, and a series of thienobora-modified PAHs was synthesized.

Carborane-arene fused boracyclic analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accessed by intramolecular borylation

Arenes are 2D aromatics while dicarbadodecaborane clusters are branded as 3D aromatic molecules. In this work we prepare molecules that feature fused 2D/3D aromatic systems that represent boron-doped analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-carborane substituent enables swift arene borylation on boron bromide or hydride precursors to furnish five- and six-membered boracycles in conjugation with the arene. The mechanism was modeled by DFT computations implying a concerted transition state and analyzing the photophysical properties revealed high quantum yields in the six-membered systems.

Doubly Spiro-Conjugated Chiral Carbocycles Exhibiting SOMO-HOMO Inversion in Persistent Radical Cations

Persistent chiral organic open-shell systems have captured growing interest due to their potential applications in organic spintronic and optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, the integration of configurationally stable chirality into an organic open-shell system continues to pose challenges in molecular design. The π-extended skeleton incorporated in spiro-conjugated carbocycles can provide robust chiroptical properties and a significant stabilization of the excited and ionic radical states. However, this approach has been relatively less explored in the design of persistent organic open-shell systems. We report here the (S,S)-, (R,R)-, and meso-isomers of doubly spiro-conjugated carbocycles featuring flat and rigid carbon-bridged para-phenylenevinylene (CPV) of different conjugation lengths connected by two spiro-carbon centers, which we denote D-spiro-CPV for its quasi-dimeric structure. Our synthetic method based on a double lithiation cyclization approach enables facile production of D-spiro-CPV. D-spiro-CPVs exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFL) resulting in a high CPL brightness of 21 M-1 cm-1 and also exhibit high thermal and photostability. The monoradical cation of D-spiro-CPV absorbing near-infrared light is notably persistent, exhibiting a half-life of 570 h under ambient conditions due to doubly spiro-conjugative stabilization. Theoretical and electrochemical studies indicate the radical cation of D-spiro-CPVs presents a non-Aufbau electron filling, exhibiting inversion of the energy level of the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) and the highest (doubly) occupied molecular orbitals with the SOMO level even below the HOMO-1 level (double SHI effect). Our discoveries provide valuable insights into non-Aufbau molecules and the development of configurationally stable, optically active persistent radicals.

A Triply Linked Porphyrin-Norcorrole Hybrid with Singlet Diradical Character

Norcorrole Ni(II) complexes have recently received considerable attention because they are readily accessible antiaromatic molecules. Their high stability under ambient conditions and ease of synthesis have enabled the exploration of the intrinsic properties of antiaromatic molecules. Here, we report the synthesis and properties of meso-meso singly linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrids and a triply linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrid. The singly linked and triply linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrids were fully characterized, including an X-ray structural analysis. Due to their orthogonal conformation, the singly linked hybrids maintain the individual electronic properties of their porphyrin and norcorrole subunits, while the triply linked hybrid shows a significantly smaller electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap (0.45 eV) than that of Ni(II) dimesitylnorcorrole (1.08 eV). Furthermore, the triply linked hybrid exhibits singlet diradical characteristics, as confirmed by VT NMR, ESR, and SQUID experiments.

β-Disubstituted Pentacene Derivatives: Thin Film Structural Properties and Four-Probe Field Effect Mobility

2,9- and 2,10-diphenylpentacene were synthesized by direct C-H borylation of ketal-protected pentacene, followed by halodeboronation, resolution of the dihalo isomers, Suzuki arylation, cleavage of the ketals and decarbonylation in the solid state. They were studied as main active components in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Diphenyl substitution of pentacene affects the unit cell dimensions only slightly, preserving a face to edge molecular packing in the first layers of thin films evaporated on SiO2 substrates. Both isomers self-assemble into nanoribbons during the thin film growth upon vapor deposition. The similarity between the surface induced phases of the 2,9-isomer and unsubstituted pentacene leads to similar 4-probe hole mobilities, i. e. 0.13 cm2 V-1 s-1 for the former. Whereas 2,9-disubstitution thus does essentially preserve the thin film characteristics of unsubstituted pentacene, 2,10-disubstitution is detrimental to the molecular ordering in the thin films and therefore to the field effect mobility which is only 0.07 cm2 V-1 s-1. The known strong enhancement of field effect mobility observed upon diphenyl substitution of anthracene can thus not be emulated analogously with pentacene.

Unlocking Biradical Character in Diborepins

Systems that possess open- and closed-shell behavior attract significant attention from researchers due to their inherent redox and charge transport properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of the first diborepin biradicals. They display tunable biradical character based on the steric and electronic profile of the stabilizing ligand and the resulting geometric deviation of the diborepin core from planarity. While there are numerous all-carbon-based biradical systems, boron-based biradical compounds are comparatively rare, particularly ones in which the radical sites are disjointed. Calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and multireference methods demonstrate that the fused diborepin scaffold exhibits high biradical character, up to 95%. Use of a nonsterically demanding diaminocarbene promotes the planarization of the pentacyclic framework, resulting in the synthetic realization of a diborepin containing a dibora-quinoidal core, which possesses a closed-shell ground state and thermally accessible triplet state. The biradicals were structurally authenticated and characterized by both solution and solid-state electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Half-field transitions were observed at low temperatures (about 170 K), confirming the presence of the triplet state. Initial reactivity studies of the biradicals led to the isolation and structural characterization of bis(borepin hydride) and bis(borepin dianion).

Two-Dimensional Nonbenzenoid Heteroacene Crystals Synthesized via In-Situ Embedding of Ladder Bipyrazinylenes on Au(111)

Precisely introducing topological defects is an important strategy in nanographene crystal engineering because defects can tune π-electronic structures and control molecular assemblies. The synergistic control of the synthesis and assembly of nanographenes by embedding the topological defects to afford two-dimensional (2D) crystals on surfaces is still a great challenge. By in-situ embedding ladder bipyrazinylene (LBPy) into acene, the narrowest nanographene with zigzag edges, we have achieved the precise preparation of 2D nonbenzenoid heteroacene crystals on Au(111). Through intramolecular electrocyclization of o-diisocyanides and Au adatom-directed [2+2] cycloaddition, the nonbenzenoid heteroacene products are produced with high chemoselectivity, and lead to the molecular 2D assembly via LBPy-derived interlocking hydrogen bonds. Using bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, we determined the atomic structures of the nonbenzenoid heteroacene product and diverse organometallic intermediates. The tunneling spectroscopy measurements revealed the electronic structure of the nonbenzenoid heteroacene, which is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The observed distinct organometallic intermediates during progression annealing combined with DFT calculations demonstrated that LBPy formation proceeds via electrocyclization of o-diisocyanides, trapping of heteroarynes by Au adatoms, and stepwise elimination of Au adatoms.

Large Room-Temperature Magnetoresistance in a High-Spin Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymer

Open-shell conjugated polymers (CPs) offer new opportunities for the development of emerging technologies that utilize the spin degree of freedom. Their light-element composition, weak spin-orbit coupling, synthetic modularity, high chemical stability, and solution-processability offer attributes that are unavailable from other semiconducting materials. However, developing an understanding of how electronic structure correlates with emerging transport phenomena remains central to their application. Here, the first connections between molecular, electronic, and solid-state transport in a high-spin donor-acceptor CP, poly(4-(4-(3,5-didodecylbenzylidene)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophen-2-yl)-6,7-dimethyl-[1,2,5]-thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline), are provided. At low temperatures (T < 180 K), a giant negative magnetoresistance (MR) is achieved in a thin-film device with a value of -98% at 10 K, which surpasses the performance of all other organic materials. The thermal depopulation of the high-spin manifold and negative MR decrease as temperature increases and at T > 180 K, the MR becomes positive with a relatively large MR of 13.5% at room temperature. Variable temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate that modulation of both the sign and magnitude of the MR correlates with the electronic and spin structure of the CP. These results indicate that donor-acceptor CPs with open-shell and high-spin ground states offer new opportunities for emerging spin-based applications.

Recent synthetic strategies of small heterocyclic organic molecules with optoelectronic applications: a review

Over the past few years, there have been tremendous developments in the design and synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials with appealing applications in device fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes, superconductors, organic lasers, organic field-effect transistors, clean energy-producing organic solar cells, etc. There is an increasing demand for the synthesis of green, highly efficient organic optoelectronic materials to cope with the issue of efficiency roll-off in organic semiconductor-based devices. This review systematically summarized the recent progress in the design and synthesis of small organic molecules having promising optoelectronic properties for their potential applications in optoelectronic devices during the last 10-year range (2010-early 2021).

On surface synthesis of an eleven-ring sulfur-doped nonacene

Dithienoacenes with a heptacene core, heptaceno[2,3-b:11,12-b']bis[1]benzothiophene, have been synthesized through the combination of solution and surface assisted chemistry. The atomic composition, structural arrangement and electronic properties of the molecules on the Au(111) surface have been deeply explored by non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), bond-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (BR-STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our combined experiments reveal modifications induced by sulfur substitution.

Temperature-Dependent Modulation of Short-Wave-Infrared Light Transparency Based on Associated Structures of a Liquescent Nickel(III) Complex

A liquescent bis(malononitriledithiolato)nickel(III) complex with a bis(methoxyethyl)imidazolium cation, 1[Ni(mnt)2 ], exhibits three-stage thermochromic modulation of transparency/absorption in the short-wave-infrared (SWIR) region (1000-2500 nm), driven by associated structural changes. Upon heating, the electronic spectra of 1[Ni(mnt)2 ] in the SWIR region shift to shorter wavelengths accompanying with the solid-liquid phase transition at 76 °C. Further heating to over 109 °C induces a second transition of the electronic spectra, characterized by a blue-shift of the SWIR absorption in the liquid phase. The results of temperature-dependent electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility indicated that the thermochromic changes can be attributed to the two-step dissociation of the associated structures of [Ni(mnt)2 ]- , occurring during the solid-liquid phase transition and the shift of dimer-monomer equilibrium in the liquid state. These changes can be visualized using an SWIR imaging camera under appropriate SWIR lights.

Carbon-based Biradicals: Structural and Magnetic Switching

Sterically hindered C═C double bonds often deform into a bent or twisted geometry. Thus, many overcrowded ethylenes or anthraquinodimethanes can adopt multiple conformations, such as a folded form or a twisted form, which are interconvertible under the application of external stimuli. A perpendicular form with biradical character can also be adopted when designed to incorporate a stable carbon-based radical unit, which is involved in stimuli-responsive magnetic switching accompanied by a structural change. This review focuses on recent advances in the development of such strained π-electron systems and reveals the factors that affect the mutual interconversion and switching behavior. The energy barrier for the interconversion of conformational isomers is affected by the tricyclic skeleton or bulky substituents on the C═C double bonds, whereas the relative stability of the perpendicular biradical form increases with the additional insertion of 9,10-anthrylene units into the C═C double bonds.

Mixed-Valence BN-Doped Corannulene Trimer Radical Cations

Mixed-valence (MV) dimers have been extensively investigated, however, the structure and properties of purely organic MV trimers based on open-shell polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons remain elusive. Herein, unprecedented MV BN-doped corannulene radical cations [BN-Cor1]3 ⋅⋅2+  ⋅ 2[BArylF 4 ]- and [BN-Cor2]3 ⋅⋅2+  ⋅ 2[BArylF 4 ]- were synthesized via chemical oxidation, and their structures were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These uncommon radical cations consist of three corannulene cores and two [BArylF 4 ]- anions, and three corannulene motifs [BN-Cor1]3 ⋅⋅2+ and [BN-Cor2]3 ⋅⋅2+ in the unit cell exhibit a trimer structure with a slipped π-stacking configuration. Detailed structural analyses further revealed that the corannulene cores exhibit an infinite layered self-assembly configuration, allowing their potential applications as building blocks for molecular conductors. The detection of a forbidden transition (Δms =±2) by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy further confirmed the existence of two unpaired electrons in the π-trimers and the MV characteristic of these two species. Variable-temperature EPR and conductivity measurements suggested that the BN-doped π-trimers exhibited antiferromagnetic coupling and conductivity properties.

Tetrahedraphene: A Csp3 -centered 3D Molecular Nanographene Showing Aggregation-Induced Emission

The bottom-up synthesis of 3D tetrakis(hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenyl)methane, "tetrahedraphene", is reported. This molecular nanographene constituted by four hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) units attached to a central sp3 carbon atom, shows a highly symmetric arrangement of the HBC units disposed in the apex of a tetrahedron. The X-ray crystal structure reveals a tetrahedral symmetry of the molecule and the packing in the crystal is achieved mostly by CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions since the interstitial solvent molecules prevent the π⋅⋅⋅π interactions. In solution, tetrahedraphene shows the same electrochemical and photophysical properties as the hexa-t Bu-substituted HBC (t Bu-HBC) molecule. However, upon water addition, it undergoes a fluorescence change in solution and in the precipitated solid, showing an aggregation induced emission (AIE) process, probably derived from the restriction in the rotation and/or vibration of the HBCs. Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations reveal that upon aggregation, the high energy region of the emission band decreases in intensity, whereas the intensity of the red edge emission signal increases and presents a smoother decay, compared to the non-aggregated molecule. All in all, the excellent correlation between our simulations and the experimental findings allows explaining the colour change observed in the different solutions upon increasing the water fraction.

Pushing Up the Size Limit of Boron-doped peri-Acenes: Modular Synthesis and Characterizations

Heteroatom-doped peri-acenes (PAs) have recently attracted considerable attention considering their fascinating physical properties and chemical stability. However, the precise sole addition of boron atoms along the zigzag edges of PAs remains challenging, primarily due to the limited synthetic approach. Herein, we present a novel one-pot modular synthetic strategy toward unprecedented boron-doped PAs (B-PAs), including B-[4,2]PA (1 a-2), B-[4,3]PA (1 b-2) and B-[7,2]PA (1 c-3) derivatives, through efficient intramolecular electrophilic borylation. Their chemical structures are unequivocally confirmed with a combination of mass spectrometry, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Notably, 1 b-2 exhibits an almost planar geometry, whereas 1 a-2 displays a distinctive bowl-like distortion. Furthermore, the optoelectronic properties of this series of B-PAs are thoroughly investigated by UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy combined with DFT calculation. Compared with their parent all-carbon analogs, the obtained B-PAs exhibit high stability, wide energy gaps, and high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 84 %. This study reveals the exceptional ability of boron doping to finely tune the physicochemical properties of PAs, showcasing their potential applications in optoelectronics.

π-Extension of Indoles Using Acrolein Linker: Synthesis of Indolo[3,2-a]carbazole-6-carbaldehydes and Racemosin B

A simple method for the synthesis of indolo[3,2-a]carbazole-6-carbaldehydes by the π-extension of indoles with acrolein is reported. The scope of the method is demonstrated with 33 examples. The products exhibit high activities toward advanced synthesis and are proved to be able to produce valuable chemicals, such as natural products, dyes, and organic fluorescent materials. In addition, the alkaloid racemosin B can be prepared by this method in two steps in ∼50% overall yield.

A highly efficient open-shell singlet luminescent diradical with strong magnetoluminescence properties

Developing open-shell singlet (OS) diradicals with high luminescent properties and exceptional single-molecule magnetoluminescence (ML) performance is extremely challenging. Herein, we propose a concept to enhance luminescent efficiency by adjusting the donor conjugation of OS diradicals, thereby achieving a highly luminescent diradical, DR1, with outstanding stability and making it a viable option for use in the emitting layer of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). More importantly, the 0.5 wt%-DR1 doped film demonstrates significant single-molecule magnetoluminescence (ML) properties. A giant ML value of 210% is achieved at a magnetic field of 7 T, showing the great potential of DR1 in magneto-optoelectronic devices.

Spin-Distribution-Directed Regioselective Substitution Strategy for Highly Stable Olympicenyl Radicals

The synthesis of bench-stable conjugated π-radicals is challenging owing to the lack of modular approaches, which greatly hampers their practical material screens and applications. Here, we demonstrate a spin-distribution-directed regioselective substitution strategy to introduce substituents into the specific positions of an olympicenyl radical in a stepwise manner, resulting in a series of highly stable radical species. The substituents can also adjust the crystal packing by means of steric and electronic factors, enabling the changing from a π-dimer to a pseudo-one-dimensional chain. The first single crystal organic field-effect transistor device based on a graphenic radical is fabricated in air, showing a hole mobility of up to 0.021 cm2  V-1  s-1 and excellent device stability. This approach may be generalized to diverse spin-delocalized open-shell organic radicals.

Elucidation of Substituent-Responsive Reactivities via Hierarchical and Asymmetric Assemblies in Crystalline p-Quinodimethane Derivatives

We propose a mechanism for substituent-responsive reactivities of p-quinodimethane derivatives with four ester groups through their hierarchical and asymmetric assembly modes. Four asymmetric 7,8,8-tris(methoxycarbonyl)-p-quinodimethanes with a 7-positioned ethoxycarbonyl (2 a(H)), 2'-fluoroethoxycarbonyl (2 b(F)), 2'-chloroethoxycarbonyl (2 c(Cl)), or 2'-bromoethoxycarbonyl (2 d(Br)) were synthesized and crystallized. 2 a(H), 2 b(F) and 2 d(Br) afforded only one shape crystal, while 2 c(Cl) did two polymorphic 2 c(Cl)-α and 2 c(Cl)-β. UV-irradiation induced topochemical polymerization for 2 a(H), no reactions for 2 b(F) and 2 c(Cl)-α, and [6+6] photocycloaddition dimerization for 2 c(Cl)-β and 2 d(Br). Such substituent-responsive reactivities and crystal structures were compared with those of the known symmetric 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(alkoxycarbonyl)-p-quinodimethanes such as 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(methoxycarbonyl)- (1 a(Me)-α and 1 a(Me)-β), 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(ethoxycarbonyl)- (1 b(Et)), and 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(bromoethoxycarbonyl)- (1 c(BrEt)). The comparative study clarified that the reactivities and crystal structures are classified into four types that link to each other. This linkage is understandable when we analyze the crystal structures through the following hierarchical and asymmetric assemblies; conformers, dimers, one dimensional (1D)-columns, two dimensional (2D)-sheets, and three dimensional (3D)-stacked sheets (3D-crystals). This supramolecular viewpoint is supported by intermolecular interaction energies among neighbored molecules with the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Such research enables us to elucidate the substituent-responsive reactivities of the crystals, and reminds us of the selection of the right path in a so-called "maze game".

Dark State of the Thiele Hydrocarbon: Efficient Solvatochromic Emission from a Nonpolar Centrosymmetric Singlet Diradicaloid

In this work, a comprehensive investigation of the photoinduced processes and mechanisms linked to the luminescence of a novel nonperchlorinated Thiele hydrocarbon (TTH) is presented. Despite the comparable diradical character of TTH (y0 = 0.32-0.44) and the unsubstituted Thiele hydrocarbon (TH) (y0 = 0.30), the polyhalogenated species is inert and photostable, showing an intense deep-red/near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) = 0.84 in toluene) even at room temperature and in the solid state (PLQY = 0.19). TTH displays a large Stokes shift (307 nm in benzonitrile) and solvatochromic behavior, which is unusual for a centrosymmetric, nonpolar, and low-conjugated species. These outstanding emission features are interpreted through quantum-chemical calculations, indicating that its fluorescence arises from the low-lying dark doubly excited zwitterionic state, typically found at low excitation energies in diradicaloids, acquiring dipole moment and intensity by state mixing via twisting around the strongly elongated exocyclic CC bonds of the excited p-quinodimethane (pQDM) core, with a mechanism similar to sudden polarization occurring in olefins. Such a mechanism is derived from ns and fs transient absorption measurements.

Fused Indacene Dimers

Polycyclic hydrocarbons consisting of two or more directly fused antiaromatic subunits are rare due to their high reactivity. However, it is important to understand how the interactions between the antiaromatic subunits influence the electronic properties of the fused structure. Herein, we present the synthesis of two fused indacene dimer isomers: s-indaceno[2,1-a]-s-indacene (s-ID) and as-indaceno[3,2-b]-as-indacene (as-ID), containing two fused antiaromatic s-indacene or as-indacene units, respectively. Their structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. 1 H NMR/ESR measurements and DFT calculations revealed that both s-ID and as-ID have an open-shell singlet ground state. However, while localized antiaromaticity was observed in s-ID, as-ID showed weak global aromaticity. Moreover, as-ID exhibited a larger diradical character and a smaller singlet-triplet gap than s-ID. All the differences can be attributed to their distinct quinoidal substructures.

On-Demand Control of Short-Wave Infrared Light Transparency Based on Stimuli-Responsive Association of Tetrathiafulvalene Radical Cations

The light-transmissive properties of a solid-state tetrathiafulvalene radical cation-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, 1-C5 ⋅+  ⋅ NTf2 - , underwent instantaneous changes in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) region (1000-2500 nm) upon exposure to solvent vapor or the application of mechanostress at room temperature. The initial solid state of 1-C5 ⋅+  ⋅ NTf2 - exhibited strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR; 700-1000 nm) and SWIR regions, whereas the absorption in the SWIR region was significantly diminished in the stimulated state induced by dichloromethane vapor. Upon cessation of vapor stimulation, the solid state spontaneously and promptly reverted to its original state, characterized by absorption bands in the NIR/SWIR region. Moreover, the SWIR absorption was absent upon the application of mechanical stress using a steel spatula. The reversal was fast and occurred within 10 s. These changes were visualized using a SWIR imaging camera under 1450-nm light irradiation. Experimental investigations demonstrated that the transparency to the SWIR light in the solid states was modulated through significant structural transformations of the associated radical cations, with transitions between columnar and isolated π-dimer structures under ambient and stimulated conditions, respectively.

Ambipolar Charge Transport in Organic Semiconductors: How Intramolecular Reorganization Energy Is Controlled by Diradical Character

The charged forms of π-conjugated chromophores are relevant in the field of organic electronics as charge carriers in optoelectronic devices, but also as energy storage substrates in organic batteries. In this context, intramolecular reorganization energy plays an important role in controlling material efficiency. In this work, we investigate how the diradical character influences the reorganization energies of holes and electrons by considering a library of diradicaloid chromophores. We determine the reorganization energies with the four-point adiabatic potential method using quantum-chemical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) level. To assess the role of diradical character, we compare the results obtained, assuming both closed-shell and open-shell representations of the neutral species. The study shows how the diradical character impacts the geometrical and electronic structure of neutral species, which in turn control the magnitude of reorganization energies for both charge carriers. Based on computed geometries of neutral and charged species, we propose a simple scheme to rationalize the small, computed reorganization energies for both n-type and p-type charge transport. The study is supplemented with the calculation of intermolecular electronic couplings governing charge transport for selected diradicals, further supporting the ambipolar character of the investigated diradicals.

Aromaticity: Quo Vadis

Aromaticity is one of the most deeply rooted concepts in chemistry. But why, if two-thirds of existing compounds can be classified as aromatic, is there no consensus on what aromaticity is? σ-, π-, δ-, spherical, Möbius, or all-metal aromaticity… why are so many attributes needed to specify a property? Is aromaticity a dubious concept? This perspective aims to reflect where the aromaticity community is and where it is going.

Lithium-Mediated Mechanochemical Cyclodehydrogenation

Cyclodehydrogenation is an essential synthetic method for the preparation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds, and nanographenes. Among the many examples, anionic cyclodehydrogenation using potassium(0) has attracted synthetic chemists because of its irreplaceable reactivity and utility in obtaining rylene structures from binaphthyl derivatives. However, existing methods are difficult to use in terms of practicality, pyrophoricity, and lack of scalability and applicability. Herein, we report the development of a lithium(0)-mediated mechanochemical anionic cyclodehydrogenation reaction for the first time. This reaction could be easily performed using a conventional and easy-to-handle lithium(0) wire at room temperature, even under air, and the reaction of 1,1'-binaphthyl is complete within 30 min to afford perylene in 94% yield. Using this novel and user-friendly protocol, we investigated substrate scope, reaction mechanism, and gram-scale synthesis. As a result, remarkable applicability and practicality over previous methods, as well as limitations, were comprehensively studied by computational studies and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated two-, three-, and five-fold cyclodehydrogenations for the synthesis of novel nanographenes. In particular, quinterrylene ([5]rylene or pentarylene), the longest nonsubstituted molecular rylene, was synthesized for the first time.

Construction of a 2,2'-biazulene framework via Brønsted acid-promoted annulation of 2,3-di(1-azulenyl)benzofurans

Dibenzofurans featuring a 2,2'-biazulene framework were prepared in good yields by Brønsted acid-promoted annulation of 2,3-di(1-azulenyl)benzofurans in 100% H₃PO₄. NMR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to investigate the structural and optical properties of the products prepared. Remarkably, the annulated products exhibited fluorescence, with the longest wavelength of azulene derivatives reported to date, which extended into the near-infrared region under acidic conditions.

Edge-Decorated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by an Oxidative Coupling Approach

Oxidative phenol coupling reduces reliance on halo/metalated substrates used in conventional redox neutral couplings. A new strategy for constructing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that incorporates oxidative phenol coupling is outlined in a three-stage approach: oxidative fragment coupling, linking of the two resultant units, and oxidative cyclization. The protocol allows rapid assembly of both planar and helical systems with a high degree of edge functionalization. The incorporation of 12 alkoxy groups on systems with 12 rings gave rise to lower optical gaps compared to systems with a lesser degree of edge functionalization.

6,6'-Biindeno[1,2-b]anthracene: An Open-Shell Biaryl with High Diradical Character

We report in situ generation of a 6,6'-biindeno[1,2-b]anthracene (BIA) derivative as an open-shell biaryl with high diradical character, which could be identified by mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray analysis, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations by various methods and variable-temperature EPR analyses were performed to tackle the elusive ground state of BIA diradical, suggesting a singlet ground state with a nearly degenerate triplet state. These results provide insight into the design of unique open-shell biaryls.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Hydrocarbons Designed by π-Extension of Indeno[1,2,3,4-pgra]perylene at the 1,2,12-Positions

The relationship between the overall electronic structure of π-conjugated molecules and the arrangement of their constituent elements is of fundamental importance. Establishing rational design guidelines for conjugated hydrocarbons with narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps is useful to develop near-infrared (NIR) responsive dyes and redox-active materials. This study describes the synthesis and properties of three conjugated hydrocarbons, i. e., an indenonaphthoperylene, an indenoterrylene, and a diindenoterrylene. These molecules exhibit NIR absorption despite the absence of significant antiaromaticity and diradical character. Notably, the indenonaphthoperylene exhibits red-to-NIR emission in the 620-850 nm region. The indenoterrylene and the diindenoterrylene exhibit NIR absorption tailing to 870 and 940 nm, respectively. Moreover, the effect of the π-extension of indenoperylene is disclosed in order to propose guidelines for achieving a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap with negligible antiaromaticity and diradical character.

Zigzag-Edged Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Benzo[m]tetraphene Precursors

A series of zigzag-edged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (Z1-Z3) were synthesized from 2,12-dibromo-7,14-diphenyl-benzo[m]tetraphene (9) as a versatile building block. Their structures were unambiguously confirmed by laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ¹ H NMR, Raman, and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies as well as scanning tunneling microscopy. The fingerprint vibrational modes were elucidated with theoretical support. The edge- and size-dependent optical properties were characterized by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Moreover, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy revealed distinct modulation of the photophysical properties upon π-extension from Z1 to Z2, the latter having a gulf edge.

π-Extended Rubrenes via Dearomative Annulative π-Extension Reaction

Among a large variety of organic semiconducting materials, rubrene (5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene) represents one of the most prominent molecular entities mainly because of its unusually high carrier mobility. Toward finding superior rubrene-based organic semiconductors, several synthetic strategies for related molecules have been established. However, despite its outstanding properties and significant attention in the field of materials science, late-stage functionalizations of rubrene remains undeveloped, thereby limiting the accessible chemical space of rubrene-based materials. Herein, we report on a late-stage π-extension of rubrene by dearomative annulative π-extension (DAPEX), leading to the generation of rubrene derivatives having an extended acene core. The Diels-Alder reaction of rubrene with 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione occurred to give 1:1 and 1:2 cycloadducts which further underwent iron-catalyzed annulative diarylation. The thus-formed 1:1 and 1:2 adducts were subjected to radical-mediated oxidation and thermal cycloreversion to furnish one-side and two-side π-extended rubrenes, respectively. These π-extended rubrenes displayed a marked red shift in absorption and emission spectra, clearly showing that the acene π-system of rubrene was extended not only structurally but also electronically. The X-ray crystallographic analysis uncovered interesting packing modes of these π-extended rubrenes. Particularly, two-side π-extended rubrene adopts a brick-wall packing structure with largely overlapping two-dimensional face-to-face π-π interactions. Finally, organic field-effect transistor devices using two-side π-extended rubrene were fabricated, and their carrier mobilities were measured. The observed maximum hole mobility of 1.49 × 10-3 cm2V-1 s-1, which is a comparable value to that of the thin-film transistor using rubrene, clearly shows the potential utility of two-side π-extended rubrene in organic electronics.

[4]Triangulenes Modified by Three Oxygen-Boron-Oxygen (OBO) Units: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Anti-Kasha Emissions

Modification of π-conjugated systems using a boron atom as the dopant has become a powerful approach to create new structures and new properties. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of replacing the carbon edges of [4]triangulene by three oxygen-boron-oxygen (OBO) units. The OBO-modified [4]triangulenes are structurally similar to [4]triangulene and isoelectronic to the trianion of [4]triangulene. The structure of OBO-modified [4]triangulene is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing an off-plane core with three edge-modified OBO units. These OBO-modified [4]triangulenes exhibit excellent thermal stability. These compounds have phosphorescence with lifetime longer than 1 s at 77 K. Both theoretical calculations and photophysical investigation of OBO-modified [4]triangulenes indicate that this kind of molecules display a rare anti-Kasha fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions from multiple higher excited states.

Synthesis of π-Extended Carbazole Dimers Via Oxidative Cyclization Using DDQ and Sulfonic Acid and Elucidation of the Reaction Mechanism

This paper describes the synthesis of various π-extended carbazole dimers via intramolecular oxidative cyclization using a chain precursor consisting of two carbazole units bridged by a nitrogen atom. A careful selection of the reaction conditions using 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone/sulfonic acid enabled the selective synthesis of a π-extended analogue with an angular (L-shape) structure in moderate yield. The preferential positions for the bonding of the two carbazole units in this π-extended derivative were determined by performing density functional theory calculations.

π-Extended S-Heterocyclic Naphthoquinodimethane with Dual Diradical and Dipolar Character

The 2,6-naphthoquinodimethane (2,6-NQDM) containing S-heterocyclic molecule 6-S was synthesized, and its dual open-shell diradical and dipolar characters were revealed via both experimental and theoretical studies. Unlike the shorter p-quinodimethane (p-QDM)-containing analogue 5-S, which possesses a closed-shell ground state (y₀ = 0%) with small dipolar character, 6-S possesses enhanced dipolar character with a singlet diradical ground state (y₀ = 23.3%) and a thermally accessible triplet excited state (ΔE_ST = -4.13 kcal/mol). Despite this, it displays good stability (t_1/2 = 41days) under ambient air and light conditions due to its distinctive dipolar character and kinetic blocking of reactive sites.

Electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of twisted dibenzo[g,p]chrysene derivatives

Dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC), which consists of a twisted naphthalene core with four fused benzene rings, is a promising framework for organic electronic materials. Therefore, the research for structure–property relationships is important for the design of DBC-based materials. Here, the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of DBC derivatives were investigated, and the effects of substituents and torsion of the naphthalene moiety were examined based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All the substituted DBC derivatives showed higher oxidation potentials than that for DBC-H, even for compounds that contained an electron-donating group such as DBC-Me and DBC-SMe. DFT calculations clearly indicate that these higher oxidation potentials are due to the ineffective conjugation of the MeO group, which is oriented perpendicular to the benzene ring because of the steric repulsion of substituents on both sides. More specifically, the inductive effect of the MeO group is dominant rather than the mesomeric effect when the substituent is located at both sides of the MeO group. Concerning the torsion of the naphthalene moiety, the twisting results in a slight increase in the HOMO and a slight lowering of the LUMO. The twisting effect is much smaller than the conjugation effect of the MeO group. Absorption spectra of all the substituted DBC derivatives also showed a red-shift as compared to that for DBC-H. Concerning the luminescence, a strong photoluminescence was observed for DBC-H and DBC-Si.
