Unsymmetric Chiral Ligands for Large Metallo-Macrocycles: Selectivity of Orientational Self-Sorting

Nature uses various chiral and unsymmetric building blocks to form substantial and complex supramolecular assemblies. In contrast, the majority of organic ligands used in metallosupramolecular chemistry are symmetric and achiral. Here we extend the group of unsymmetric chiral bile acids used as a scaffold for organic bispyridyl ligands by employing chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), an epimer of the previously used ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). The epimerism, flexibility, and bulkiness of the ligands leads to large structural differences in coordination products upon reaction with Pd(NO3)2. The UDCA-bispyridyl ligand self-assembles quantitatively into a single crown-like Pd3L6 complex, whereas the CDCA ligand provides a mixture of coordination complexes of general formula PdnL2n, i.e., Pd2L4, Pd3L6, Pd4L8, Pd5L10, and even Pd6L12 containing an impressive 120 chiral centers. The coordination products were studied by a combination of analytical methods, with ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) providing valuable details on their structure and allowed an effective separation of m/z 1461 to individual signals according to the arrival time distribution, thereby revealing four different ions of [Pd3L6(NO3)3]3+, [Pd4L8(NO3)4]4+, [Pd5L10(NO3)5]5+, and [Pd6L12(NO3)6]6+. The structures of all the complexes were modelled using DFT calculations. Finally, the challenges and conclusions in determining the specific structural identity of these unsymmetric species are discussed.

Rapid Semiconducting Supramolecular Mg(II)-Metallohydrogel: Exploring Its Potential in Nonvolatile Resistive Switching Applications and Antiseptic Wound Healing Properties

An effective strategy was employed for the rapid development of a supramolecular metallohydrogel of Mg(II) ion (i.e., Mg@PEHA) using pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) as a low-molecular-weight gelator in aqueous medium under ambient conditions. The mechanical stability of the synthesized Mg@PEHA metallohydrogel was characterized by using rheological analysis, which showed its robustness across different angular frequencies and oscillator stress levels. The metallohydrogel exhibited excellent thixotropic behavior, which signifies that Mg@PEHA has a self-healing nature. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images were utilized to explore the rectangular pebble-like hierarchical network of the Mg@PEHA metallohydrogel. Elemental mapping through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of primary chemical constituents in the metallohydrogel. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectroscopy provided insights into the possible formation strategy of the metallohydrogel. In this work, Schottky diode structures in a metal-semiconductor-metal geometry based on a magnesium(II) metallohydrogel (Mg@PEHA) were constructed, and the charge transport behavior was observed. Additionally, a resistive random access memory (RRAM) device was developed using Mg@PEHA, which displayed bipolar resistive switching behavior at room temperature. The researchers investigated the switching mechanism, which involved the formation or rupture of conduction filaments, to gain insights into the resistive switching process. The RRAM device demonstrated excellent performance with a high ON/OFF ratio of approximately 100 and remarkable endurance of over 5000 switching cycles. RRAM devices exhibit good endurance, meaning they can endure a large number of read and write cycles without significant degradation in performance. RRAM devices have shown promising reliability in terms of long-term performance and stability, making them suitable for critical applications that require reliable memory solutions. Significant inhibitory activity against the drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia strain and its biofilm formation ability was demonstrated by Mg@PEHA. The minimum inhibitory concentration value of the metallohydrogel was determined to be 3 mg/mL when it was dissolved in 1% DMSO. To study the antibiofilm activity, an MTT assay was performed, revealing that biofilm inhibition (60%) commenced at 1 mg/mL of Mg@PEHA when dissolved in 1% DMSO. Moreover, in the mouse excisional wound model, Mg@PEHA played a crucial role in preventing postoperative wound infections and promoting wound healing.

Exploration of a wide bandgap semiconducting supramolecular Mg(II)-metallohydrogel derived from an aliphatic amine: a robust resistive switching framework for brain-inspired computing

A rapid metallohydrogelation strategy has been developed of magnesium(II)-ion using trimethylamine as a low molecular weight gelator in water medium at room temperature. The mechanical property of the synthesized metallohydrogel material is established through the rheological analysis. The nano-rose like morphological patterns of Mg(II)-metallohydrogel are characterized through field emission scanning electron microscopic study. The energy dispersive X-ray elemental mapping analysis confirms the primary gel forming elements of Mg(II)-metallohydrogel. The possible metallohydrogel formation strategy has been analyzed through FT-IR spectroscopic study. In this work, magnesium(II) metallohydrogel (Mg@TMA) based metal-semiconductor-metal structures have been developed and charge transport behaviour is studied. Here, it is confirmed that the magnesium(II) metallohydrogel (Mg@TMA) based resistive random access memory (RRAM) device is showing bipolar resistive switching behaviour at room temperature. We have also explored the mechanism of resistive switching behaviour using the formation (rupture) of conductive filaments between the metal electrodes. This RRAM devices exhibit excellent switching endurance over 10,000 switching cycles with a large ON/OFF ratio (~ 100). The easy fabrication techniques, robust resistive switching behaviour and stability of the present system makes these structures preferred candidate for applications in non-volatile memory design, neuromorphic computing, flexible electronics and optoelectronics etc.

Two novel low molecular weight gelator-driven supramolecular metallogels efficient in antimicrobial activity applications

A remarkable ultrasonication technique was successfully employed to create two novel metallogels using citric acid as a low molecular weight gelator, in combination with cadmium(ii)-acetate and mercury(ii)-acetate dissolved in N,N-dimethyl formamide at room temperature and under ambient conditions. The mechanical properties of the resulting Cd(ii)- and Hg(ii)-metallogels were rigorously examined through rheological analyses, which revealed their robust mechanical stability under varying angular frequencies and shear strains. Detailed characterization of the chemical constituents within these metallogels was accomplished through EDX mapping experiments, while microstructural features were visualized using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images. Additionally, FT-IR spectroscopic analysis was employed to elucidate the metallogel formation mechanism. Significantly, the antimicrobial efficacy of these novel metallogels was assessed against a panel of bacteria, including Gram-positive strains such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus epidermidis, as well as Gram-negative species like Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results demonstrated substantial antibacterial activity, highlighting the potential of Cd(ii) and Hg(ii)-based citric acid-mediated metallogels as effective agents against a broad spectrum of bacteria. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive exploration of the synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial properties of Cd(ii) and Hg(ii)-based citric acid-mediated metallogels, shedding light on their promising applications in combating both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial infections. These findings open up exciting prospects for the development of advanced materials with multifaceted industrial and biomedical uses.

Synthesis of bile acid-thiadiazole conjugates as antibacterial and antioxidant agents

The synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial and antioxidant activity of thiadiazole-deoxycholic/lithocholic acid conjugates are described in this communication. The structures of the synthesised bile acid-thiadiazole conjugates were studied using 1H NMR, 13C NMR and FTIR. Compounds 4c (IC50; 15.34 ± 0.07 μM) and 5c (IC50; 13.45 ± 0.25 μM) demonstrated greater antioxidant activity than the reference compound ascorbic acid (IC50; 20.72 ± 1.02 μM) in DPPH assay. The most effective conjugates against P. vulgarise were 4c (IC50; 24 ± 2.3 μM), 4 g (IC50; 29 ± 2.5 μM), and 5c (IC50; 93 ± 3.6 μM), whereas the most effective conjugates against E. coli were 4e (IC50; 55 ± 2.1 μM) and 4f (IC50; 52 ± 3.5 μM). Conjugates 4c and 5c were the most effective against B. megaterium of all the synthesised conjugates, with IC50 values of 15 ± 1.08 and 20 ± 1.1 μM, respectively. Thus, a large library of compounds derived from bile acid can be easily synthesised for extensive structure-activity relationship studies in order to identify the most appropriate antibacterial agents and antioxidant activity.

Amidoamine Oxide Surfactants as Low-Molecular-Weight Hydrogelators: Effect of Methylene Chain Length on Aggregate Structure and Rheological Behavior

Rheology control is an important issue in many industrial products such as cosmetics and paints. Recently, low-molecular-weight compounds have attracted considerable attention as thickeners/gelators for various solvents; however, there is still a significant need for molecular design guidelines for industrial applications. Amidoamine oxides (AAOs), which are long-chain alkylamine oxides with three amide groups, are surfactants that act as hydrogelators. Here, we show the relationship between the length of methylene chains at four different locations of AAOs, the aggregate structure, the gelation temperature T_gel, and the viscoelasticity of the formed hydrogels. As seen from the results of electron microscopic observations, the aggregate structure (ribbon-like or rod-like) can be controlled by changing the length of methylene chain in the hydrophobic part, the length of methylene chain between the amide and amine oxide groups, and the lengths of methylene chains between amide groups. Furthermore, hydrogels consisting of rod-like aggregates showed significantly higher viscoelasticity than those consisting of ribbon-like aggregates. In other words, it was shown that the gel viscoelasticity could be controlled by changing the methylene chain lengths at four different locations of the AAO.

Recent advances on small molecular gels: formation mechanism and their application in pharmaceutical fields

INTRODUCTION

As an essential complement to chemically cross-linked macromolecular gels, drug delivery systems based on small molecular gels formed under the driving forces of non-covalent interactions are attracting considerable research interest due to their potential advantages of high structural functionality, lower biological toxicity, reversible stimulus-response, and so on.

AREA COVERED

The present review summarizes recent advances in small molecular gels and provides their updates as a comprehensive overview in terms of gelation mechanism, gel properties, and physicochemical characterizations. In particular, this manuscript reviews the effects of drug-based small molecular gels on the drug development and their potential applications in the pharmaceutical fields.

EXPERT OPINION

Small molecular-based gel systems, constructed by inactive compounds or active pharmaceutical ingredients, have been extensively studied as carriers for drug delivery in pharmaceutical field, such as oral formulations, injectable formulations, and transdermal formulations. However, the construction of such gel systems yet faces several challenges such as rational and efficient design of functional gelators and the great occasionality of drug-based gel formation. Thus, a deeper understanding of the gelation mechanism and its relationship with gel properties will be conducive to the construction of small molecular gels systems and their future application.

Synthesis and Properties of a New Type of Terpyridine Cholesterol Derivative Gelator with Applications to Medical Treatments

Low molecular mass gelators (LMMGs), as a new type of intelligent soft material, possess good response properties to light, electricity, heat, and ultrasound and have many potential applications in fields such as intelligent sensing, biological materials, and drug release. Additionally, steroid derivatives have been a focus in the study of LMMGs for their desirable properties as well, such as their rigid framework, multichiral center, and strong van der Waals accumulation. Furthermore, the coordination ability of terpyridine has been an emphasis in the study of supramolecular chemistry and coordination chemistry as well. Attempts have been made with terpyridine groups that have special responses, such as terpyridine with steroid derivatives, to build more specialized and functional gelators. In this study, we used 2-acetylpyridine, 2-formaldehyde, and cholesterol to synthesize 6-(2,2:6 ${}^{\prime }$ ,2 ${}^{″}$ -terpyridine-4 ${}^{\prime }$ -carboxamide group) hexanoic acid (with a yield of 64.39%, P1), glycine cholesterol ester (with a yield of 70.36%, P2), and DMTCP (with a yield of 88.92%). Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and gelator performance tests were then conducted to measure the gelation effect of the materials and to explore their gelation mechanisms. Compared to P1 and P2, the DMTCP synthesized by P1 and P2 was able to form gel in more kinds of solvents. In addition, when it contains both terpyridine and cholesterol functional groups, the gelation properties of DMTCP were also significantly improved, and all the gels prepared in the four solvents in which DMTCP can form gels were stimulus responsive.

Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Supramolecular Gel Formed from Modified Adenosine

Urea derivatives 1 and 2, synthesized from adenosine, were designed as low-molecular-weight gelators. Hydrophobic groups have been introduced into all or part of the hydroxy groups of the hydrophilic ribose moiety of 1 and 2 to control the solvophilicity of the molecules and their aggregates. Compound 2 selectively formed supramolecular gels in halogenated solvents such as chloroform and 1,2-dichloroethane. The supramolecular gel of 2 and chloroform was thermally stable and its gel-to-sol phase transition temperature was higher than the boiling point of chloroform. The physical properties of the supramolecular gel were investigated by determining its viscoelastic properties using a rheometer. The supramolecular gel realized multiple stimuli-responsive reversible gel-sol phase transitions. The supramolecular gel showed reversible phase transition by repeated warming-cooling cycles accompanying with the gel-sol transitions. The supramolecular gel could undergo five repeated mechano-responsive gel-sol transitions. Gel-to-sol phase transition could also be achieved by adding various anions to the supramolecular gel, such as tetrabutylammonium fluoride. Regelation was realized by adding boron trifluoride etherate to the fluoride ion containing sol. Addition of methanol to the supramolecular gel also induced gel-to-sol phase transition. Regelation was realized by adding molecular sieves 4 Å to the suspension.

Water-in-Oil Emulsion Gels Stabilized by a Low-Molecular Weight Organogelator Derived from Dehydroabietic Acid

High concentrations of surfactants or gelators are usually necessary to prepare emulsions gels with unusual physicochemical properties. This situation may be improved by innovating the aggregate morphology in systems. Herein, a rosin-based molecule is designed and synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as the starting material (denoted as R-Lys-R). The molecule acts as an effective organogelator and can gelate several hydrocarbon compounds with a minimum gelation concentration of 0.2% (w/v). Analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and circular dichroism (CD) reveals that in n-decane, R-Lys-R forms left-handed helical fibers with a cross-sectional diameter of approximately 15 nm. The directional hydrogen bonding of the amide group is helpful to the formation of aggregates. At concentrations of R-Lys-R above 2%, water-in-oil emulsions are transformed into emulsion gels owing to the aptitude of R-Lys-R in gelating the oil phase. The concentrations of the emulsifier can be adjusted to obtain emulsion gels with different formulations. This work reveals the potential of rosin derivatives for the formation of small molecular weight organogels and provides a novel method for the utilization of natural resources in soft materials and home care products.

Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Probe Hydrogels Formed by Sodium Deoxycholate

Hydrogels of bile acids and their salts are promising materials for drug delivery, cellular immobilization, and other applications. However, these hydrogels are poorly understood at the molecular level, and further study is needed to allow improved materials to be created by design. We have used NMR spectroscopy to probe hydrogels formed from mixtures of formic acid and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), a common bile acid salt. By assaying the ratio of deoxycholate molecules that are immobilized as part of the fibrillar network of the hydrogels and those that can diffuse, we have found that 65% remain free under typical conditions. The network appears to be composed of both the acid and salt forms of deoxycholate, possibly because a degree of charge inhibits excessive aggregation and precipitation of the fibrils. Spin-spin relaxation times provided a molecular-level estimate of the temperature of gel-sol transition (42 °C), which is virtually the same as the value determined by analyzing macroscopic parameters. Saturation transfer difference (STD) NMR spectroscopy established that formic acid, which is present mainly as formate, is not immobilized as part of the gelating network. In contrast, HDO interacts with the network, which presumably has a surface with exposed hydrophilic groups that form hydrogen bonds with water. Moreover, the STD NMR experiments revealed that the network is a dynamic entity, with molecules of deoxycholate associating and dissociating reversibly. This exchange appears to occur preferentially by contact of the hydrophobic edges or faces of free molecules of deoxycholate with those of molecules immobilized as components of the network. In addition, DOSY experiments revealed that gelation has little effect on the diffusion of free NaDC and HDO.

Energy transfer in FRET pairs in a supramolecular hydrogel template

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in pairs of chromophores has mostly been achieved using covalently bound chromophores. In this study, we have demonstrated energy transfer in FRET pairs by taking advantage of the self-assembly of the chromophores on metal cholate hydrogel fibers.

Preparation and Characterization of Oleanolic Acid-Based Low-Molecular-Weight Supramolecular Hydrogels Induced by Heating

The natural-product-based low-molecular-weight supramolecular hydrogels (LMWSHs) induced by heating are rarely reported. In this work, a simple salt of oleanolic acid (OA) and choline ([choline][OA]) was used as the natural product hydrogelator (NPHG) to form LMWSHs. Unlike common sol-gel transitions, the OA-based LMWSH displayed a unique property with which the system could undergo a phase transition from the sol state to the gel state upon heating. Moreover, the phase separation was observed in sol and gel states when the temperature was elevated with nonreversible transparent-turbid transitions. LMWSHs showed good stability and injectability and the potential to be a drug delivery vehicle for sustained release of drugs. In this regard, this work provided a facile approach to designing an OA-based NPHG for preparing heat-induced LMWSHs.

Carbocycle-Based Organogelators: Influence of Chirality and Structural Features on Their Supramolecular Arrangements and Properties

The rational design and engineer of organogel-based smart materials and stimuli-responsive materials with tuned properties requires the control of the non-covalent forces driving the hierarchical self-assembly. Chirality, as well as cis/trans relative configuration, also plays a crucial role promoting the morphology and characteristics of the aggregates. Cycloalkane derivatives can provide chiral chemical platforms allowing the incorporation of functional groups and hydrophobic structural units able for a convenient molecular stacking leading to gels. Restriction of the conformational freedom imposed by the ring strain is also a contributing issue that can be modulated by the inclusion of flexible segments. In addition, donor/acceptor moieties can also be incorporated favoring the interactions with light or with charged species. This review offers a perspective on the abilities and properties of carbocycle-based organogelators starting from simple cycloalkane derivatives, which were the key to establish the basis for an effective self-assembling, to sophisticated polycyclic compounds with manifold properties and applications.

Rapid Self-Healing and Thixotropic Organogelation of Amphiphilic Oleanolic Acid-Spermine Conjugates

Natural and abundant plant triterpenoids are attractive starting materials for the synthesis of conformationally rigid and chiral building blocks for functional soft materials. Here, we report the rational design of three oleanolic acid-triazole-spermine conjugates, containing either one or two spermine units in the target molecules, using the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. The resulting amphiphile-like molecules 2 and 3, bearing just one spermine unit in the respective molecules, self-assemble into highly entangled fibrous networks leading to gelation at a concentration as low as 0.5% in alcoholic solvents. Using step-strain rheological measurements, we show rapid self-recovery (up to 96% of the initial storage modulus) and sol ⇔ gel transition under several cycles. Interestingly, rheological flow curves reveal the thixotropic behavior of the gels. To the best of our knowledge, this kind of behavior was not shown in the literature before, neither for a triterpenoid nor for its derivatives. Conjugate 4, having a bolaamphiphile-like structure, was found to be a nongelator. Our results indicate that the position and number of spermine units alter the gelation properties, gel strength, and their self-assembly behavior. Preliminary cytotoxicity studies of the target compounds 2-4 in four human cancer cell lines suggest that the position and number of spermine units affect the biological activity. Our results also encourage exploring other triterpenoids and their derivatives as sustainable, renewable, and biologically active building blocks for multifunctional soft organic nanomaterials.

Stimuli-Sensitive Self-Assembled Tubules Based on Lysine-Derived Surfactants for Delivery of Antimicrobial Proteins

Drug delivery vectors based on amphiphiles have important features such as versatile physicochemical properties and stimuli-responsiveness. Amino acid-based surfactants are especially promising amphiphiles due to their enhanced biocompatibility compared to conventional surfactants. They can self-organize into micelles, vesicles and complex hierarchical structures, such as fibers, twisted and coiled ribbons, and tubules. In this work, we investigated the self-assembly and drug loading properties of a family of novel anionic double-tailed lysine-derived surfactants, with variable degree of tail length mismatch, designated as mLys10 and 10Lysn, where m and n are the number of carbon atoms in the tails. These surfactants form tubular aggregates with assorted morphologies in water that undergo gelation due to dense entanglement, as evidenced by light and electron microscopy. Lysozyme (LZM), an enzyme with antimicrobial properties, was selected as model protein for loading. After the characterization of the interfacial properties and phase behavior of the amphiphiles, the LZM-loading ability of the tubules was investigated, under varying experimental conditions, to assess the efficiency of the aggregates as pH- and temperature-sensitive nanocarriers. Further, the toxicological profile of the surfactants per se and surfactant/LZM hydrogels was obtained, using human skin fibroblasts (BJ-5ta cell line). Overall, the results show that the tubule-based hydrogels exhibit very interesting properties for the transport and controlled release of molecules of therapeutic interest.

Recent advances in the bile acid based conjugates/derivatives towards their gelation applications

Bile acids have contributed immensely to hydrogel research due to their peculiar physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. The wide accessibility of bile acids and their straightforward derivatization methods make them attractive building blocks for the design of novel hydrogels systems to deliver biomolecules, drugs, and vaccines. This review conceptualizes recent developments in bile acid-based hydrogels and their applications. These bile-based hydrogels have the ability to absorb carbon dioxide efficiently and may potentially work as alternative materials for carbon dioxide capture and storage. The hydrogels hold great potential in medicine and biology applications as drug carriers and models for fundamental self-assembly in pathological conditions. Herein, we have summarized the efforts that have been made for the development of molecular hydrogels in terms of biocompatibility, therapeutic applications, and challenges associated with existing molecular hydrogels.

Supramolecular organogel formation through three-dimensional α-cyclodextrin nanostructures: solvent chirality-selective organogel formation

Novel supramolecular organogels were efficiently formed by mixing a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) solution of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) with 1- or 2-butanol via the formation of three-dimensional hexagonal nanostructures composed of head-to-tail α-CD channel assemblies. Mixing (R)- and (S)-2-butanol with an α-CD/HFIP solution realized (S)-2-butanol-selective organogel formation.

Synthesis, complete NMR assignment and structural study of a steroidal dimer of 17α-ethynyl-5α,10α-estran-17β-ol with diethynylbenzene spacer

A phenylene-bridged steroidal dimer derived from 17α-ethynyl-5α,10α-estran-17β-ol with molecular rotor-like architecture was synthesized to investigate the supramolecular interactions directing the crystallization of these systems. Structures with varying importance in complementarity between H-bonding and hydrophobic interactions can be observed directing the packing of the obtained crystals, depending on the synthetic stage, though conserving the same space group for both systems. Such behavior clearly shows the versatility achievable using steroids as crystal packing directors. Alongside this structural study, the complete NMR assignment is presented for the dimer, and precursors, in which the steroids present an unconventional and noteworthy A-B ring fusion.

Supramolecular Organogelation Directed by Weak Noncovalent Interactions in Palmitoylated 1,5-Anhydro-d-Glucitol Derivatives

We synthesized a series of novel alicyclic compounds by modifying 1,5-anhydro-d-glucitol with two to four palmitoyl chains, and we explored their self-assembly and gelation behaviors in paraffin. The obtained organogels were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, variable-temperature Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, polarized optical microscopy, and transmission spectroscopy. While all the palmitoylated derivatives spontaneously formed fibrous networks and gelated the paraffin, an acetylated derivative of 1,5-anhydro-d-glucitol did not gelatinize the solvent, thus indicating the importance of aliphatic chains for gelation. Interestingly, α- and β- d-glucopyranose with five palmitoyl chains neither gelatinized the solvent nor formed fibrous networks, thus suggesting that the absence of C-1 substitution in 1,5-anhydro-d-glucitol is important for gelation. Fourier transform IR spectroscopy suggested that the formation of weak hydrogen bonds between the carbonyl groups and the C-H groups was the driving force for formation of the supramolecular fibers and for gelation of the solvent.

Effects of Terminal Motif on the Self-Assembly of Dexamethasone Derivatives

Tailoring the terminal motif of molecules including drugs might significantly affect their self-assembly tendency in aqueous solution, thus providing a rational strategy to modulate its macroscopic characteristics of supramolecular assembly. A model drug of dexamethasone (Dex) was esterified by different fatty acids [succinic acid (SA), glutaric acid (GA), and adipic acid (AA)] and aromatic acid [phthalic acid (PA)] to generate a series of Dex derivatives. Aqueous solution of Dex-SA, Dex-GA, and Dex-AA turned into hydrogel spontaneously after a period time of incubation (24, 48, and 72 h, respectively) via the auto-hydrolytic strategy, while aqueous solution of Dex-PA did not result in hydrogelation during 3 days of incubation. Aqueous solutions of Dex-SA, Dex-GA, and Dex-AA underwent apparent hydrolysis (10.73 ± 0.64%, 15.17 ± 2.24%, and 17.29 ± 1.39%, respectively), while Dex-PA exhibited a minimal hydrolysis (<1%) in a period of 28 days study, as indicated by in vitro hydrolytic test. Morphological observation showed that the hydrogel formed by Dex-SA was composed of uniform nanofibers, while hydrogels formed by Dex-GA, and Dex-AA were derived from irregular particles. The mechanical strength of hydrogel formed by Dex-SA was much bigger than that of hydrogels formed by Dex-GA and Dex-AA, as indicated by rheological test. Moreover, the acylation of Dex did not compromise its potent anti-inflammatory activity in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophage.

Self-assembled functional components-doped conductive polypyrrole composite hydrogels with enhanced electrochemical performances

A conductive hydrogel is a composite conductive material formed by combining a conductive polymer with a nanogel structure of a hydrogel. Conductive hydrogels not only have potential applications in supercapacitors, sensors, and modulators, they can also be synthesized by many methods, such as copolymerization, crosslinking, and grafting. In this work, we successfully prepared three conductive composite hydrogels by in situ polymerization, namely polypyrrole sodium alginate conductive hydrogel, ferric chloride-doped polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel and doped polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate. In addition, a series of characterizations were performed for the three conductive hydrogels described above. The results show that the polypyrrole sodium alginate hydrogel doped with ferric chloride forms a nanofiber network with a more stable structure and better electrochemical performance.

New functional components-doped conductive polypyrrole composite hydrogels are prepared via a self-assembled process, demonstrating potential applications in catalysis as well as electrochemical materials.

Diaminomaleonitrile-functionalized gelators in F−/CN− sensing, phase-selective gelation, oil spill recovery and dye removal from water

Diamiomaleonitrile-based gelators 1 and 2 were designed and synthesized. Toluene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene gels of 1 and 2, respectively sense F⁻ and CN⁻ anions. Both 1 and 2 show phase-selective gelation (PSG) with distinguishable feature. Toluene gel of 1 acts as injectable material and is applied in environmental remediation.

Bile Salts: Natural Surfactants and Precursors of a Broad Family of Complex Amphiphiles

Bile salts (BSs) are naturally occurring rigid surfactants with a steroidal skeleton and specific self-assembly and interface behaviors. Using bile salts as precursors, derivatives can be synthesized to obtain molecules with specific functionalities and amphiphilic structure. Modifications on single molecules are normally performed by substituting the least-hindered hydroxyl group on carbon C-3 of the steroidal A ring or at the end of the lateral chain. This leads to monosteroidal rigid building blocks that are often able to self-organize into 1D structures such as tubules, twisted ribbons, and fibrils with helical supramolecular packing. Tubular aggregates are of particular interest, and they are characterized by cross-section inner diameters spanning a wide range of values (3-500 nm). They can form through appealing pH- or temperature-responsive aggregation and in mixtures of bile salt derivatives to provide mixed tubules with tunable charge and size. Other derivatives can be prepared by covalently linking two or more bile salt molecules to provide complex systems such as oligomers, dendrimers, and polymeric materials. The unconventional amphiphilic molecular structure imparts specific features to BSs and derivatives that can be exploited in the formulation of capsules, drug carriers, dispersants, and templates for the synthesis of nanomaterials.

Design and gelation behaviors of cholesterol-based derivatives as organogelators: an investigation of the correlation between molecular structures and gelation behaviors

The carboxylic group and the number of cholesteryl moieties have an important influence on gelation behaviors.

4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde derived Schiff base gelators: case of the sustainability or rupturing of imine bonds towards the selective sensing of Ag+and Hg2+ionsviasol–gel methodology

The cholesterol appended hydroxybenzaldehyde derived Schiff bases1–4have been designed and synthesized. They are suitable for the naked-eye detection of metal ions such as Hg²⁺and Ag⁺using sol–gel methodology involving either rupturing or maintaining the imine bonds.

A sulfonyl hydrazone cholesterol conjugate: gelation, anion interaction and its application in dye adsorption

Cholesterol appended sulfonyl-hydrazone derivative 1 was designed and synthesized as a supramolecular gelator for anionic sensing and dye adsorption. Gelator 1 forms a strong gel in DMSO–H₂O and the morphology of the xerogel shows a tiny rod-like fibrous network. The gel of 1 shows a selective response toward CN⁻ and F⁻ ions causing gel-to-sol transformation. The gel of 1 acts as an efficient matrix for adsorption and removal of anionic dyes such as erythrosine B and uranine from water.

Dosimetric Chromogenic Probe for Selective Detection of Sulfide via Sol-Gel Methodology

Dinitrobenzenesulfonyl-protected naphthyl azo pyridine conjugate 1 has been designed and synthesized. Compound 1 acts as a nongelator in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O (1:1, v/v) while its hydroxy counterpart 2 can form a nice gel in the same solvent. In the presence of sulfide, compound 1 undergoes rapid sulfonate ester hydrolysis and results in the formation of azo-naphthol 2 that responds in instant gelation. Such deprotection was extremely selective to sulfide; other analytes did not show measurable response. The sensing mechanism has been established by various spectroscopic techniques. Compound 1 in solution (DMSO-H2O) also shows a selective response toward sulfide over a series of other anions with a color change. Preparation of test kit with compound 1 allows detection of sulfide in solution and vapor states. Such kind of dosimetric sensing of chemical analytes by improvising the protection/deprotection of functional groups in gelator structure is rare in the literature, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a stimuli-responsive low-molecular-weight gelator which dosimetrically senses sulfide over other nucleophilic substrates.
