Water-Catalyzed Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species from NO2 on a Weakly Hydrated Calcite Surface

The interfaces of weakly hydrated mineral substrates have been shown to serve as catalytic sites for chemical reactions that may not be accessible in the gas phase or under bulk conditions. Currently known mechanisms for the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from nitrogen dioxide (NO2) involve NO2 dimerization. Here, we report the formation of the ROS HONO via a mechanism involving simple adsorption of a single NO2 molecule on a weakly hydrated calcite substrate. First-principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled with enhanced sampling techniques show how an adsorbed water sublayer can enhance NO2 adsorption on calcite compared to adsorption on a bare dry substrate. On the weakly hydrated calcite surface, an interfacial electric field facilitates proton extraction from water, thus allowing HONO formation from a single adsorbed NO2, i.e., without the need for the formation of a NO2 dimer precomplex. HONO formation on calcite is kinetically more favorable than that in the gas phase, with a reaction barrier of 14 kcal/mol on the weakly hydrated calcite surface compared to 27 kcal/mol in the gas phase. Further photocatalysed HONO production by visible light and HONO dissociation are hampered on calcite, unlike the process on silica. NO2 is a significant anthropogenic pollutant, and understanding its chemistry is crucial for explaining the high ROS levels and haze formation in polluted areas or prebiotic ROS generation. These findings emphasize how mineral substrates under water-restricted hydration conditions can trigger chemical pathways that are unexpected in the gas phase or under bulk conditions.

Heterogeneous reaction of NO2 with hematite: The effects of UV irradiation, O2 and relative humidity

Heterogeneous reactions on mineral dust surfaces are increasingly considered important in the removal of gaseous pollutants and the formation of secondary aerosols. Although the heterogeneous reaction of NO2 on the hematite surface has been investigated in many previous studies, little is known about the reaction of NO2 with hematite under ambient conditions. In this work, heterogeneous reactions of NO2 with hematite at 298 K were investigated via a coated-wall flow tube reactor and in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The influence of UV illumination, relative humidity (RH) and O2 on the uptake coefficients and adsorption amount of NO2, as well as the nitrate formation on the hematite surface, has been analyzed comprehensively. UV irradiation shows a significant effect on the true uptake coefficient (γBET), which increases from 2.00 × 10-6 to 4.76 × 10-6 in the N2 stream and 1.32 × 10-6 to 4.07 × 10-6 in the air stream under dry conditions (∼0.3 % RH). RH (in the range of 0-67 %) exhibits an inhibitory effect on the adsorption of NO2 on the hematite surface because of the competition between NO2 and water molecules, that is, γBET and adsorption amount of NO2 decrease with an increase in RH under both the dark and light reaction conditions. Meanwhile, both the γBET and adsorption amount of NO2 on hematite decrease in the air stream compared to those in N2 conditions. In addition, the results from the DRIFTS experiments indicate that the presence of UV irradiation promotes the conversion of NO2 to nitrate and both the RH and O2 suppress the nitrate formation. From this research, the heterogeneous reactions between NO2 with mineral dust under ambient conditions will be better understood.

Interfacial carbonyl groups of propylene carbonate facilitate the reversible binding of nitrogen dioxide

The interaction of NO2 with organic interfaces is critical in the development of NO2 sensing and trapping technologies, and equally so to the atmospheric processing of marine and continental aerosol. Recent studies point to the importance of surface oxygen groups in these systems, however the role of specific functional groups on the microscopic level has yet to be fully established. In the present study, we aim to provide fundamental information on the interaction and potential binding of NO2 at atmospherically relevant organic interfaces that may also help inform innovation in NO2 sensing and trapping development. We then present an investigation into the structural changes induced by NO2 at the surface of propylene carbonate (PC), an environmentally relevant carbonate ester. Surface-sensitive vibrational spectra of the PC liquid surface are acquired before, during, and after exposure to NO2 using infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Analysis of vibrational changes at the liquid surface reveal that NO2 preferentially interacts with the carbonyl of PC at the interface, forming a distribution of binding symmetries. At low ppm levels, NO2 saturates the PC surface within 10 minutes and the perturbations to the surface are constant over time during the flow of NO2. Upon removal of NO2 flow, and under atmospheric pressures, these interactions are reversible, and the liquid surface structure of PC recovers completely within 30 min.

Phase State Regulates Photochemical HONO Production from NaNO3/Dicarboxylic Acid Mixtures

Field observations of daytime HONO source strengths have not been well explained by laboratory measurements and model predictions up until now. More efforts are urgently needed to fill the knowledge gaps concerning how environmental factors, especially relative humidity (RH), affect particulate nitrate photolysis. In this work, two critical attributes for atmospheric particles, i.e., phase state and bulk-phase acidity, both influenced by ambient RH, were focused to illuminate the key regulators for reactive nitrogen production from typical internally mixed systems, i.e., NaNO3 and dicarboxylic acid (DCA) mixtures. The dissolution of only few oxalic acid (OA) crystals resulted in a remarkable 50-fold increase in HONO production compared to pure nitrate photolysis at 85% RH. Furthermore, the HONO production rates (PHONO) increased by about 1 order of magnitude as RH rose from <5% to 95%, initially exhibiting an almost linear dependence on the amount of surface absorbed water and subsequently showing a substantial increase in PHONO once nitrate deliquescence occurred at approximately 75% RH. NaNO3/malonic acid (MA) and NaNO3/succinic acid (SA) mixtures exhibited similar phase state effects on the photochemical HONO production. These results offer a new perspective on how aerosol physicochemical properties influence particulate nitrate photolysis in the atmosphere.

Heterogeneous Reactions of Phenol on Different Components of Mineral Dust Aerosol: Formation of Oxidized Organic and Nitro-Phenolic Compounds

Phenol, a common semi-volatile compound associated with different emissions including from plants and biomass burning, as well as anthropogenic emissions and its derivatives, are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Gas and aqueous phase reactions of phenol, in the presence of photochemical drivers, are fairly well understood. However, despite observations showing aromatic content within SOA size and mass increases during dust episodes, the heterogeneous reactions of phenol with mineral dusts are poorly understood. In the current study, surface reactions of phenol at the gas/solid interface with different components of mineral dust including SiO2, α-Fe2O3, and TiO2 have been investigated. Whereas reversible surface adsorption of phenol occurs on SiO2 surfaces, for both α-Fe2O3 and TiO2 surfaces, phenol reacts to form a wide range of OH substituted aromatic products. For α-Fe2O3 surfaces that have been nitrated by gas-phase reactions of nitric acid prior to exposure to phenol, unique compounds form on the surface including nitro-phenolic compounds. Moreover, additional surface chemistry was observed when adsorbed nitro-phenolic products were exposed to gas-phase SO2 as a result of the formation of adsorbed nitrite from nitrate redox chemistry with adsorbed SO2. Overall, this study reveals the extensive chemistry as well as the complexity of reactions of prevalent organic compounds leading to the formation of SOA on mineral surfaces.

Real-time application and modelling of the NOx-sorption reaction on a particulate calcium carbonate surface-flow filter exposed to combustion exhaust

Of major interest, especially in city environments, and increasingly inside vehicles or industrial plants, is the drive to reduce human exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx). This trend has drawn increasing attention to filtration, which has developed remarkably owing to the capabilities of recently developed mathematical models and novel filter concepts. This paper reports on the study of the kinetic modelling of adsorption of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), collected from the tailpipe of a diesel engine, reacting to calcium nitrate salt (Ca(NO3)2) on a surface flow filter consisting of a coating of fine ground limestone or marble (CaCO3) in combination with micro-nanofibrillated cellulose (MNFC) acting as binder and humectant applied onto a multiply recycled newsprint substrate. The coating and substrate are both porous, but on different pore size scales, with the coating having significantly lower permeability. To maximise gas-coating contact, therefore, the coating deposition is pixelated, achieved by pin coating. An axially dispersed gaseous plug flow model (dispersion model) was used to simulate the transport within the coating pore network structure, following earlier flow modelling studies, and a kinetic reaction model was used to examine NO2 to NO3- conversion in correlation with experimental results. Modelling results indicate a 60.38% conversion of exposed NO2 gas to Ca(NO3)2 under the specific conditions applied, with an absolute relative error between the predicted and experimentally estimated value being 0.81%. The model additionally enabled a prediction of effects of changing parameters over a limited perturbation range, thus assisting in predicting filter element consumption, with attention given to the active component CaCO3 surface as a function of particle size in relation to the gas contact exchange, promoting the reaction over time. It is intended that the Ca(NO3)2 formed from the reaction can go on to be used as a value-added fertiliser, thus contributing to circular economy.

Uptake and reactivity of NO2 on the hydroxylated silica surface: A source of reactive oxygen species

We report state-of-the-art first-principles molecular dynamics results on the heterogeneous chemical uptake of NO2, a major anthropogenic pollutant, on the dry and wet hydroxylated surface of α-quartz, which is a significant component of silica-based catalysts and atmospheric dust aerosols. Our investigation spotlights an unexpected chemical pathway by which NO2 (i) can be adsorbed as HONO by deprotonation of interfacial silanols (i.e., -Si-OH group) on silica, (ii) can be barrierless converted to nitric acid, and (iii) can finally dissociated to surface bounded NO and hydroxyl gas phase radicals. This chemical pathway does not invoke any previously experimentally postulated NO2 dimerization, dimerization that is less likely to occur at low NO2 concentrations. Moreover, water significantly catalyzes the HONO formation and the dissociation of nitric acid into surface-bounded NO and OH radicals, while visible light adsorption can further promote these chemical transformations. This work highlights how water-restricted solvation regimes on common mineral substrates are likely to be a source of reactive oxygen species, and it offers a theoretical framework for further and desirable experimental efforts, aiming to better constrain trace gases/mineral interactions at different relative humidity conditions.

The persistence of smoke VOCs indoors: Partitioning, surface cleaning, and air cleaning in a smoke-contaminated house

Wildfires are increasing in frequency, raising concerns that smoke can permeate indoor environments and expose people to chemical air contaminants. To study smoke transformations in indoor environments and evaluate mitigation strategies, we added smoke to a test house. Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) persisted days following the smoke injection, providing a longer-term exposure pathway for humans. Two time scales control smoke VOC partitioning: a faster one (1.0 to 5.2 hours) that describes the time to reach equilibrium between adsorption and desorption processes and a slower one (4.8 to 21.2 hours) that describes the time for indoor ventilation to overtake adsorption-desorption equilibria in controlling the air concentration. These rates imply that vapor pressure controls partitioning behavior and that house ventilation plays a minor role in removing smoke VOCs. However, surface cleaning activities (vacuuming, mopping, and dusting) physically removed surface reservoirs and thus reduced indoor smoke VOC concentrations more effectively than portable air cleaners and more persistently than window opening.

MgO nanocube hydroxylation by nanometric water films

Hydrophilic nanosized minerals exposed to air moisture host thin water films that are key drivers of reactions of interest in nature and technology. Water films can trigger irreversible mineralogical transformations, and control chemical fluxes across networks of aggregated nanomaterials. Using X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and (micro)gravimetry, we tracked water film-driven transformations of periclase (MgO) nanocubes to brucite (Mg(OH)₂) nanosheets. We show that three monolayer-thick water films first triggered the nucleation-limited growth of brucite, and that water film loadings continuously increased as newly-formed brucite nanosheets captured air moisture. Small (8 nm-wide) nanocubes were completely converted to brucite under this regime while growth on larger (32 nm-wide) nanocubes transitioned to a diffusion-limited regime when (∼0.9 nm-thick) brucite nanocoatings began hampering the flux of reactive species. We also show that intra- and inter-particle microporosity hosted a hydration network that sustained GPa-level crystallization pressures, compressing interlayer brucite spacing during growth. This was prevalent in aggregated 8 nm wide nanocubes, which formed a maze-like network of slit-shaped pores. By resolving the impact of nanocube size and microporosity on reaction yields and crystallization pressures, this work provides new insight into the study of mineralogical transformations induced by nanometric water films. Our findings can be applied to structurally related minerals important to nature and technology, as well as to advance ideas on crystal growth under nanoconfinement.

Oxide- and Silicate-Water Interfaces and Their Roles in Technology and the Environment

Interfacial reactions drive all elemental cycling on Earth and play pivotal roles in human activities such as agriculture, water purification, energy production and storage, environmental contaminant remediation, and nuclear waste repository management. The onset of the 21st century marked the beginning of a more detailed understanding of mineral aqueous interfaces enabled by advances in techniques that use tunable high-flux focused ultrafast laser and X-ray sources to provide near-atomic measurement resolution, as well as by nanofabrication approaches that enable transmission electron microscopy in a liquid cell. This leap into atomic- and nanometer-scale measurements has uncovered scale-dependent phenomena whose reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, and pathways deviate from previous observations made on larger systems. A second key advance is new experimental evidence for what scientists hypothesized but could not test previously, namely, interfacial chemical reactions are frequently driven by "anomalies" or "non-idealities" such as defects, nanoconfinement, and other nontypical chemical structures. Third, progress in computational chemistry has yielded new insights that allow a move beyond simple schematics, leading to a molecular model of these complex interfaces. In combination with surface-sensitive measurements, we have gained knowledge of the interfacial structure and dynamics, including the underlying solid surface and the immediately adjacent water and aqueous ions, enabling a better definition of what constitutes the oxide- and silicate-water interfaces. This critical review discusses how science progresses from understanding ideal solid-water interfaces to more realistic systems, focusing on accomplishments in the last 20 years and identifying challenges and future opportunities for the community to address. We anticipate that the next 20 years will focus on understanding and predicting dynamic transient and reactive structures over greater spatial and temporal ranges as well as systems of greater structural and chemical complexity. Closer collaborations of theoretical and experimental experts across disciplines will continue to be critical to achieving this great aspiration.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Prediction of the Partitioning Constants (KH, Kiw, Kia) of 82 Legacy and Emerging Organic Contaminants at the Water-Air Interface

The tendency of organic contaminants (OCs) to partition between different phases is a key set of properties that underlie their human and ecological health impacts and the success of remediation efforts. A significant challenge associated with these efforts is the need for accurate partitioning data for an ever-expanding list of OCs and breakdown products. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have the potential to help generate these data, but existing studies have applied these techniques only to a limited variety of OCs. Here, we use established MD simulation approaches to examine the partitioning of 82 OCs, including many compounds of critical concern, at the water-air interface. Our predictions of the Henry's law constant (K_H) and interfacial adsorption coefficients (K_iw, K_ia) correlate strongly with experimental results, indicating that MD simulations can be used to predict K_H, K_iw, and K_ia values with mean absolute deviations of 1.1, 0.3, and 0.3 logarithmic units after correcting for systematic bias, respectively. A library of MD simulation input files for the examined OCs is provided to facilitate future investigations of the partitioning of these compounds in the presence of other phases.

Seasonal variability in size-resolved hygroscopicity of sub-micron aerosols over the Western Ghats, India: Closure and parameterization

Hygroscopicity of atmospheric aerosol primarily depends on the size and chemical composition of the particle and is important for estimating anthropogenic aerosol radiative forcing. There is limited information exists over the Indian region on size segregated aerosol hygroscopicity (κ) in different seasons. This study presents 'κ' as derived from a Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (HTDMA) over a High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in the Western Ghats, India for more than a year (from May 2019 to May 2020). The average hygroscopicity values of aerosol particles of diameters 32, 50, 75, 110, 150, 210 and 260 nm at 90 % RH condition are 0.19, 0.18, 0.16, 0.17, 0.18, 0.20, 0.21 respectively during the entire observation period. κ was observed to decrease with an increase in size in the Aitken mode regime (32-75 nm) and an increase in the accumulation mode (110-260 nm). Seasonal variation of hygroscopicity for a wide range of particle diameters is reported which is highly demanding as there is a change in the air mass flow pattern in each of the seasons. The diurnal cycle of hygroscopicity showed a prominent peak during the midnight to early morning hours followed by a decrease in the forenoon hours and a secondary peak in the afternoon hours. κ is found to be higher in pre-monsoon compared to winter season as Chl is approximately 3 % higher in pre-monsoon and NH₄Cl is highly hygroscopic among the assumed chemical composition. Hygroscopicity derived through chemical speciation observations assuming internal and external mixing of aerosols i.e. κ_inter and κ_exter are overestimating as compared to κ_HTDMA. However, the bias between k_exter and k_HTDMA is relatively lower as external mixing type of aerosol is evident through the growth factor data sets measured by HTDMA. Utilizing the hygroscopicity measurements available for discrete diameters by HTDMA, a parameterization of hygroscopicity with the dry diameter of sub-micron particles is developed.

Photoinduced Dynamics at the Water/TiO_{2}(101) Interface

We present a femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-soft x-ray probe photoemission study in which we follow the dynamics of charge transfer at the interface of water and anatase TiO_{2}(101). By combining our observation of transient oxygen O 1s core level peak shifts at submonolayer water coverages with Ehrenfest molecular dynamics simulations we find that ultrafast interfacial hole transfer from TiO_{2} to molecularly adsorbed water is completed within the 285 fs time resolution of the experiment. This is facilitated by the formation of a new hydrogen bond between an O_{2c} site at the surface and a physisorbed water molecule. The calculations fully corroborate our experimental observations and further suggest that this process is preceded by the efficient trapping of the hole at the surface of TiO_{2} by hydroxyl species (-OH), that form following the dissociative adsorption of water. At a water coverage exceeding a monolayer, interfacial charge transfer is suppressed. Our findings are directly applicable to a wide range of photocatalytic systems in which water plays a critical role.

Heterogeneous Formation of Organonitrates (ON) and Nitroxy-Organosulfates (NOS) from Adsorbed α-Pinene-Derived Organosulfates (OS) on Mineral Surfaces

Organonitrates (ON) and nitroxy-organosulfates (NOS) are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Gas-phase reactions of α-pinene (C₁₀H₁₆), a primary precursor for several ON compounds, are fairly well understood although formation pathways for NOS largely remain unknown. NOS formation may occur via reactions of ON and organic peroxides with sulfates as well as through radical-initiated photochemical processes. Despite the fact that organosulfates (OS) represent a significant portion of the organic aerosol mass, ON and NOS formation from OS is less understood, especially through nighttime heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry pathways. In the current study, surface reactions of adsorbed α-pinene-derived OS with nitrogen oxides on hematite and kaolinite surfaces, common components of mineral dust, have been investigated. α-Pinene reacts with sulfated mineral surfaces, forming a range of OS compounds on the surface. These OS compounds when adsorbed on mineral surfaces can further react with HNO₃ and NO₂, producing several ON and NOS compounds as well as several oxidation products. Overall, this study reveals the complexity of reactions of prevalent organic compounds leading to the formation of OS, ON, and NOS via heterogeneous and multiphase reaction pathways on mineral surfaces. It is also shown that this chemistry is mineralogy-specific.

Emerging investigator series: ozone uptake by urban road dust and first evidence for chlorine activation during ozone uptake by agro-based anti-icer: implications for wintertime air quality in high-latitude urban environments

High-latitude urban regions provide a unique and complex range of environmental surfaces for uptake of trace pollutant gases, including winter road maintenance materials (e.g., gravel, rock salts, and anti-icer, a saline solution applied to roads during winter). In an effort to reduce the negative environmental and economic impacts of road salts, many municipalities have turned to agro-based anti-icing materials that are rich in organic material. To date, the reactivity of both anti-icer and saline road dust with pollutant gases remain unexplored, which limits our ability to assess the potential impacts of these materials on air quality in high-latitude regions. Here, we used a coated-wall flow tube to investigate the uptake of ozone, an important air pollutant, by road dust collected in Edmonton, Canada. At 25% relative humidity (RH) and 50 ppb ozone, γ_BET for ozone uptake by this sample is (8.0 ± 0.7) × 10^-8 under dark conditions and (2.1 ± 0.1) × 10^-7 under illuminated conditions. These values are 2-4× higher than those previously obtained by our group for natural mineral dusts, but are not large enough for suspended road dust to influence local ozone mixing ratios. In a separate set of experiments, we also investigated the uptake of ozone by calcium chloride (i.e., road salt) and commercial anti-icer solution. Although ozone uptake by pure calcium chloride was negligible, ozone uptake by anti-icer was significant, which implies that the reactivity of anti-icer is conferred by its organic content. Importantly, ozone uptake by anti-icer-and, to a lesser extent, road dust doped with anti-icer-leads to the release of inorganic chlorine gas, which we collected using inline reductive trapping and quantified using ion chromatography. To explain these results, we propose a novel pathway for chlorine activation: here, ozone oxidation of the anti-icer organic fraction (in this case, molasses) yields reactive OH radicals that can oxidize chloride. In summary, this study demonstrates the ability of road dust and anti-icer to influence atmospheric oxidant mixing ratios in cold-climate urban areas, and highlights previously unidentified air quality impacts of winter road maintenance decisions.

Water Adsorption on Mica Surfaces with Hydrophilicity Tuned by Counterion Types (Na, K, and Cs) and Structural Fluorination

The stability of adsorbed water films on mineral surfaces has far-reaching implications in the Earth, environmental, and materials sciences. Here, we use the basal plane of phlogopite mica, an atomically smooth surface of a natural mineral, to investigate water film structure and stability as a function of two features that modulate surface hydrophilicity: the type of adsorbed counterions (Na, K, and Cs) and the substitution of structural OH groups by F atoms. We use molecular dynamics simulations combined with in situ high-resolution X-ray reflectivity to examine surface hydration over a range of water loadings, from the adsorption of isolated water molecules to the formation of clusters and films. We identify four regimes characterized by distinct adsorption energetics and different sensitivities to cation type and mineral fluorination: from 0 to 0.5 monolayer film thickness, the hydration of adsorbed ions; from 0.5 to 1 monolayer, the hydration of uncharged regions of the siloxane surface; from 1 to 1.5 monolayer, the attachment of isolated water molecules on the surface of the first monolayer; and for >1.5 monolayer, the formation of an incipient electrical double layer at the mineral-water interface.

Interactions of limonene and carvone on titanium dioxide surfaces

Limonene, a monoterpene, found in cleaning products and air fresheners can interact with a variety of surfaces in indoor environments. An oxidation product of limonene, carvone, has been reported to cause contact allergens. In this study, we have investigated the interactions of limonene and carvone with TiO₂, a component of paint and self-cleaning surfaces, at 297 ± 1 K with FTIR spectroscopy and force field-based molecular dynamics and ab initio simulations. The IR absorption spectra and computational methods show that limonene forms π-hydrogen bonds with the surface O-H groups on the TiO₂ surface and that carvone adsorbs on the TiO₂ surface through a variety of molecular interactions including through carbonyl oxygen atoms with Ti⁴⁺ surface atoms, O-H hydrogen bonding (carbonyl O⋯HO) and π-hydrogen bonds with surface O-H groups. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of relative humidity (RH) on the adsorption of limonene and carvone on the TiO₂ surface. The spectroscopic results show that the adsorbed limonene can be completely displaced by water at a relative humidity of ca. 50% RH (∼2 MLs of water) and that 25% of carvone is displaced at ca. 67% RH, which agrees with the calculated free energies of adsorption which show carvone more strongly adsorbs on the surface relative to limonene and thus would be harder to displace from the surface. Overall, this study shows how a monoterpene and its oxidation product interact with TiO₂ and the impact of relative humidity on these interactions.

Persistent Uptake of H2O2 onto Ambient PM2.5 via Dark-Fenton Chemistry

Particulate matter (PM) and gaseous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) interact ubiquitously to influence atmospheric oxidizing capacity. However, quantitative information on H₂O₂ loss and its fate on urban aerosols remain unclear. This study investigated the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions of H₂O₂ on PM_2.5 and explored how these processes are affected by various experimental conditions (i.e., relative humidity, temperature, and H₂O₂ concentration). We observed a persistent uptake of H₂O₂ by PM_2.5 (with the uptake coefficients (γ) of 10^-4-10^-3) exacerbated by aerosol liquid water and temperature, confirming the critical role of water-assisted chemical decomposition during the uptake process. A positive correlation between the γ values and the ratio of dissolved iron concentration to H₂O₂ concentration suggests that Fenton catalytic decomposition may be an important pathway for H₂O₂ conversion on PM_2.5 under dark conditions. Furthermore, on the basis of kinetic data gained, the parameterization of H₂O₂ uptake on PM_2.5 was developed and was applied into a box model. The good agreement between simulated and measured H₂O₂ uncovered the significant role that heterogeneous uptake plays in the sink of H₂O₂ in the atmosphere. These findings suggest that the composition-dependent particle reactivity toward H₂O₂ should be considered in atmospheric models for elucidating the environmental and health effects of H₂O₂ uptake by ambient aerosols.

A database for deliquescence and efflorescence relative humidities of compounds with atmospheric relevance

Deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) and efflorescence relative humidity (ERH), the two parameters that regulate phase state and hygroscopicity of substances, play important roles in atmospheric science and many other fields. A large number of experimental studies have measured the DRH and ERH values of compounds with atmospheric relevance, but these values have not yet been summarized in a comprehensive manner. In this work, we develop for the first-of-its-kind a comprehensive database which compiles the DRH and ERH values of 110 compounds (68 inorganics and 42 organics) measured in previous studies, provide the preferred DRH and ERH values at 298 K for these compounds, and discuss the effects of a few key factors (e.g., temperature and particle size) on the measured DRH and ERH values. In addition, we outline future work that will broaden the scope of this database and enhance its accessibility.

Water vapor adsorption by dry soils: A potential link between the water and carbon cycles

Water vapor adsorption (WVA) by soil is a potential contributor to the water cycle in drylands. However, continuous in-situ estimates of WVA are still scarce and the understanding of its coupling with carbon cycle and ecosystem processes remains at an incipient stage. Here we aimed to (1) identify periods of WVA and improve the understanding of the underlying processes involved in its temporal patterns by using the gradient method; (2) characterize a potential coupling between water vapor and CO₂ fluxes, and (3) explore the effect of soil properties and biocrusts ecological succession on fluxes. We assumed that the nocturnal soil CO₂ uptake increasingly reported in those environments could come from WVA enhancing geochemical reactions involving calcite. We measured continuously during ca. 2 years the relative humidity and CO₂ molar fraction in soil and atmosphere, in association with below- and aboveground variables, over the biocrusts ecological succession. We estimated water vapor and CO₂ fluxes with the gradient method, and cumulative fluxes over the study. Then, we used statistical modelling to explore relationships between variables. Our main findings are (1) WVA fluxes during hot and dry periods, and new insights on their underlying mechanisms; (2) a diel coupling between water vapor and CO₂ fluxes and between cumulative fluxes, well predicted by our models; and (3) cumulative CO₂ influxes increasing with specific surface area in early succession stages, thus mitigating CO₂ emissions. During summer drought, as WVA was the main water source, it probably maintained ecosystem processes such as microbial activity and mineral reactions in this dryland. We suggest that WVA could drive the nocturnal CO₂ uptake in those moments and discuss biogeochemical mechanisms potentially involved. Additional research is needed to monitor soil water vapor and CO₂ uptake and separate their biotic and abiotic components as those sinks could grow with climate change.

Wet-dry cycles protect surface-colonizing bacteria from major antibiotic classes

Diverse antibiotic compounds are abundant in microbial habitats undergoing recurrent wet-dry cycles, such as soil, root and leaf surfaces, and the built environment. These antibiotics play a central role in microbial warfare and competition, thus affecting population dynamics and the composition of natural microbial communities. Yet, the impact of wet-dry cycles on bacterial response to antibiotics has been scarcely explored. Using the bacterium E. coli as a model organism, we show through a combination of experiments and computational modeling, that wet-dry cycles protect bacteria from beta-lactams. This is due to the combined effect of several mechanisms including tolerance induced by high salt concentrations and slow cell-growth, which are inherently associated with microscopic surface wetness-a hydration state typical to 'dry' periods. Moreover, we find evidence for a cross-protection effect, where lethal doses of antibiotic considerably increase bacterial survival during the dry periods. This work focuses on beta-lactams, yet similar protection was observed for additional major antibiotic classes. Our findings shed new light on how we understand bacterial response to antibiotics, with broad implications for population dynamics, interspecies interactions, and the evolution of antibiotic resistance in vast terrestrial microbial habitats.

Molecular Dynamics Study on the Thermal Aspects of the Effect of Water Molecules at the Adhesive Interface on an Adhesive Structure

The presence of adsorbed water on hydrophilic solid surfaces should be taken into account, especially in humid environments. It significantly reduces the adhesive strength between the epoxy resin and the adherend surface. Here, the adhesion structure of interfacial water sandwiched between bisphenol A epoxy resin and a hydroxylated silica (001) surface is investigated with microsecond molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, interfacial water layers with initial thicknesses of 7.5, 10, and 20 Å are modeled. The density curves of water and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A show that at room temperature, the surface of the silica with hydroxyl groups is completely covered with a thick layer of water. For water layers thinner than 10 Å, the density of epoxy resin on the silica surface increases when the system is heated and does not return to the original density when the system is cooled. Furthermore, calculation of the interaction energy revealed that the exclusion of water from the hydroxylated surface by epoxy resin during heating can contribute to the increase in the adhesive interaction between the epoxy resin and the silica surface with hydroxyl groups.

Efficient solar light facilitated photo-oxidative detoxification of gaseous 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide on ZrO2-doped g-C3N4 under dry and humid air

Photo-oxidation of chemical warfare agents is considered a promising strategy to cope with threats from accidental or intentional release. In this study, heterostructure photocatalysts comprising different amounts of zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) over carbon nitride (CN) were synthesized via simple thermal exfoliation, followed by a precipitation method. The successful photocatalytic detoxification activity of the as-prepared photocatalyst was analyzed against 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under simulated solar light and natural sunlight irradiation in dry and humid air. As the CN/ZrO₂ demonstrated a high surface area and oxygen doping, the addition of small amounts of the ZrO₂ phase could lead to enhanced photoreactivity in surface chemistry. The as-prepared (CN/ZrO₂-II) degraded 95% of CEES under simulated solar light and 70% under natural sunlight within 90 min. The photo-detoxification of CEES was associated with the generation of holes (h⁺) and activation of oxygen to superoxide radicals (•O₂). Based on analysis results, a reaction mechanism was suggested. The activity of the used photocatalyst could be recovered to 90% of the fresh photocatalyst activity via simple water washing. However, as sulfurous compounds were accumulated on the surface in subsequent cyclic tests, solvent washing was also suggested to maintain high detoxification performance.

Molecular Properties and Chemical Transformations Near Interfaces

The properties of bulk water and aqueous solutions are known to change in the vicinity of an interface and/or in a confined environment, including the thermodynamics of ion selectivity at interfaces, transition states and pathways of chemical reactions, and nucleation events and phase growth. Here we describe joint progress in identifying unifying concepts about how air, liquid, and solid interfaces can alter molecular properties and chemical reactivity compared to bulk water and multicomponent solutions. We also discuss progress made in interfacial chemistry through advancements in new theory, molecular simulation, and experiments.

Measurement of heterogeneous uptake of NO2 on inorganic particles, sea water and urban grime

Heterogeneous reactions of NO₂ on different surfaces play an important role in atmospheric NO_x removal and HONO formation, having profound impacts on photochemistry in polluted urban areas. Previous studies have suggested that the NO₂ uptake on the ground or aerosol surfaces could be a dominant source for elevated HONO during the daytime. However, the uptake behavior of NO₂ varies with different surfaces, and different uptake coefficients were used or derived in different studies. To obtain a more holistic picture of heterogeneous NO₂ uptake on different surfaces, a series of laboratory experiments using different flow tube reactors was conducted, and the NO₂ uptake coefficients (γ) were determined on inorganic particles, sea water and urban grime. The results showed that heterogeneous reactions on those surfaces were generally weak in dark conditions, with the measured γ varied from <10^-8 to 3.2 × 10^-7 under different humidity. A photo-enhanced uptake of NO₂ on urban grime was observed, with the obvious formation of HONO and NO from the heterogeneous reaction. The photo-enhanced γ was measured to be 1.9 × 10^-6 at 5% relative humidity (RH) and 5.8 × 10^-6 at 70% RH on urban grime, showing a positive RH dependence for both NO₂ uptake and HONO formation. The results demonstrate an important role of urban grime in the daytime NO₂-to-HONO conversion, and could be helpful to explain the unknown daytime HONO source in the polluted urban area.

First X-ray Spectroscopic Observations of Atmospheric Titanium Species: Size Dependence and the Emission Source

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) in mineral dust is considered as one of the driving forces of photocatalytic reaction at the aerosol surface in the atmosphere. As a precursor of mineral dust, soil contains ilmenite (FeTiO3) and titanite (CaSiTiO5), which have lower photochemical reactivities than TiO2. However, Ti species other than TiO2 in aerosol particles are not well recognized due to the lack of observation in ambient samples. In this study, Ti species in size-fractionated aerosol samples collected in the Noto Peninsula, Japan, were determined by macroscopic and semi-microscopic X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Regardless of aerosol particle size, Ti species were primarily composed of rutile, anatase, ilmenite, and titanite. Semi-microscopic Ti speciation showed that Ti-poor spots associated with mineral dust were composed of a mixture of rutile, anatase, ilmenite, and titanite, and Ti-rich spots were primarily composed of TiO2 (rutile or anatase) derived from authigenic minerals or anthropogenic materials. Thus, the Ti species in aerosol particles, especially mineral dust, were not composed solely of TiO2 polymorphs. Therefore, the photochemical reactivities of Ti in aerosol particles may be overestimated when laboratory experiments or model studies employ TiO2 as the representative Ti species.

HONO Production from Gypsum Surfaces Following Exposure to NO2 and HNO3: Roles of Relative Humidity and Light Source

Nitrous acid (HONO) is a toxic household pollutant and a major source of indoor OH radicals. The high surface-to-volume ratio and diverse lighting conditions make the indoor photochemistry of HONO complex. This study demonstrates surface uptake of NO₂ and gaseous HNO₃ followed by gas-phase HONO generation on gypsum surfaces, model system for drywall, under reaction conditions appropriate for an indoor air environment. Tens of parts per billion of steady-state HONO are detected under these experimental conditions. Mechanistic insight into this heterogeneous photochemistry is obtained by exploring the roles of material compositions, relative humidities, and light sources. NO₂ and HNO₃ are adsorbed onto drywall surfaces, which can generate HONO under illumination and under dark conditions. Photoenhanced HONO generation is observed for illumination with a solar simulator as well as with the common indoor light sources such as compact fluorescence light and incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent light sources release more HONO and NO₂ near the light source compared to the solar radiation. Overall, HONO production on the gypsum surface increases with the increase of RH up to 70% relative humidity; above that, the gaseous HONO level decreases due to surface loss. Heterogeneous hydrolysis of NO₂ is predicted to be the dominant HONO generation channel, where NO₂ is produced through the photolysis of surface-adsorbed nitrates. This hydrolysis reaction predominantly occurs in the first layer of surface-adsorbed water.

Theoretical Study of the Monohydration of Mercury Compounds of Atmospheric Interest

The structures, vibrational frequencies, and model IR spectra of the monohydrates of oxygenated mercury compounds (BrHgO, BrHgOH, BrHgOOH, BrHgNO₂, BrHgONO, and HgOH) have been theoretically studied using the ωB97X-D/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The ground state potential energy surface exhibits several stable structures of these monohydrates. The thermodynamic properties of the hydration reactions have been calculated at different levels of theory including DFT and coupled-cluster calculations DK-CCSD(T) with the ANO-RCC-Large basis sets. Standard enthalpies and Gibbs free energies of hydration were computed. The temperature dependence of Δ_rG°(T) was evaluated for the most stable complexes over the temperature range 200-400 K. Thermodynamic data revealed that the highest fraction hydrated at 298 K and 100% relative humidity will be BrHgNO₂-H₂O at ∼5%.

Soft X-ray emission spectroscopy for the electronic state of water molecules influenced by plasma-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes

In this study, soft X-ray emission spectroscopy of an aqueous colloidal dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified via the plasma process in an aqueous solution was performed for investigating the electronic state of water molecules on the colloidal particles. In the aqueous dispersion, reconstruction of the hydrogen-bonded network was implied by the O 1s spectral changes in the 1b1' and 1b1'' peaks. Furthermore, the O 1s spectral intensity around the 3a1 state was enhanced to an unusually broad energy range in comparison with previous studies. This unusual spectral change might be attributed to the hybridization of the electronic states of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the plasma-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes and that of the surrounding water molecules. Our observation indicates not only reconstruction of the hydrogen-bonded network in the aqueous dispersion but also a significant interaction of the electronic states between the water molecules and the plasma-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Life in a Droplet: Microbial Ecology in Microscopic Surface Wetness

While many natural and artificial surfaces may appear dry, they are in fact covered by thin liquid films and microdroplets invisible to the naked eye known as microscopic surface wetness (MSW). Central to the formation and the retention of MSW are the deliquescent properties of hygroscopic salts that prevent complete drying of wet surfaces or that drive the absorption of water until dissolution when the relative humidity is above a salt-specific level. As salts are ubiquitous, MSW occurs in many microbial habitats, such as soil, rocks, plant leaf, and root surfaces, the built environment, and human and animal skin. While key properties of MSW, including very high salinity and segregation into droplets, greatly affect microbial life therein, it has been scarcely studied, and systematic studies are only in their beginnings. Based on recent findings, we propose that the harsh micro-environment that MSW imposes, which is very different from bulk liquid, affects key aspects of bacterial ecology including survival traits, antibiotic response, competition, motility, communication, and exchange of genetic material. Further research is required to uncover the fundamental principles that govern microbial life and ecology in MSW. Such research will require multidisciplinary science cutting across biology, physics, and chemistry, while incorporating approaches from microbiology, genomics, microscopy, and computational modeling. The results of such research will be critical to understand microbial ecology in vast terrestrial habitats, affecting global biogeochemical cycles, as well as plant, animal, and human health.

Green Synthesis of N/Zr Co-Doped TiO2 for Photocatalytic Degradation of p-Nitrophenol in Wastewater

TiO2 prepared by a green aqueous sol–gel peptization process is co-doped with nitrogen and zirconium to improve and extend its photoactivity to the visible region. Two nitrogen precursors are used: urea and triethylamine; zirconium (IV) tert-butoxide is added as a source of zirconia. The N/Ti molar ratio is fixed regardless of the chosen nitrogen precursor while the quantity of zirconia is set to 0.7, 1.4, 2, or 2.8 mol%. The performance and physico-chemical properties of these materials are compared with the commercial Evonik P25 photocatalyst. For all doped and co-doped samples, TiO2 nanoparticles of 4 to 8 nm of size are formed of anatase-brookite phases, with a specific surface area between 125 and 280 m2 g−1 vs. 50 m2 g−1 for the commercial P25 photocatalyst. X-ray photoelectron (XPS) measurements show that nitrogen is incorporated into the TiO2 materials through Ti-O-N bonds allowing light absorption in the visible region. The XPS spectra of the Zr-(co)doped powders show the presence of TiO2-ZrO2 mixed oxide materials. Under visible light, the best co-doped sample gives a degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) equal to 70% instead of 25% with pure TiO2 and 10% with P25 under the same conditions. Similarly, the photocatalytic activity improved under UV/visible reaching 95% with the best sample compared to 50% with pure TiO2. This study suggests that N/Zr co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles can be produced in a safe and energy-efficient way while being markedly more active than state-of-the-art photocatalytic materials under visible light.

Survival of the enveloped bacteriophage Phi6 (a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2) in evaporated saliva microdroplets deposited on glass surfaces

Survival of respiratory viral pathogens in expelled saliva microdroplets is central to their transmission, yet the factors that determine survival in such microdroplets are not well understood. Here we combine microscopy imaging with virus viability assays to study survival of three bacteriophages suggested as good models for respiratory pathogens: the enveloped Phi6 (a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2), and the non-enveloped PhiX174 and MS2. We measured virus viability in human saliva microdroplets, SM buffer, and water following deposition on glass surfaces at various relative humidities (RH). Saliva and water microdroplets dried out rapidly, within minutes, at all tested RH levels (23%, 43%, 57%, and 78%), while SM microdroplets remained hydrated at RH ≥ 57%. Generally, the survival of all three viruses in dry saliva microdroplets was significantly greater than those in SM buffer and water under all RH (except PhiX174 in water under 57% RH survived the best among 3 media). Thus, atmosphere RH and microdroplet hydration state are not sufficient to explain virus survival, indicating that the virus-suspended medium, and association with saliva components in particular, likely play a role in virus survival. Uncovering the exact properties and components that make saliva a favorable environment for the survival of viruses, in particular enveloped ones like Phi6, is thus of great importance for reducing transmission of viral respiratory pathogens including SARS-CoV-2.

Photochemical Oxidation of Water-Soluble Organic Carbon (WSOC) on Mineral Dust and Enhanced Organic Ammonium Formation

Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), which is closely related to biogenic emissions, is of great importance in the atmosphere for its ubiquitous existence and rich abundance. Levoglucosan, a typical WSOC, is usually considered to be stable and thus used as a tracer of biomass burning. However, we found that levoglucosan can be photo-oxidized on mineral dust, with formic acid, oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid, 2,3-dioxopropanoic acid, dicarbonic acid, performic acid, mesoxalaldehyde, 2-hydroxymalonaldehyde, carbonic formic anhydride, and 1,3-dioxolane-2,4-dione detected as main products. Further, we observed the heterogeneous uptake of NH₃ promoted by the carboxylic acids stemming from the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of levoglucosan. The mineral-dust-initiated PCO of levoglucosan and enhanced heterogeneous uptake of NH₃, which are highly influenced by irradiation and moisture conditions, were for the first time revealed. The reaction mechanisms and pathways were studied in detail by diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), high-pressure photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPPI-ToF-MS) and flow reactor systems. Diverse WSOC constituents were studied as well, and the reactivity toward NH₃ is related to the number of hydroxyl groups of the WSOC molecules. This work reveals a new precursor of secondary organic aerosols and provides experimental evidence of the existence of organic ammonium salts in atmospheric particles.

Density Functional Theory and Thermodynamics Modeling of Inner-Sphere Oxyanion Adsorption on the Hydroxylated α-Al2O3(001) Surface

The inner-sphere adsorption of AsO₄^3-, PO₄^3-, and SO₄^2- on the hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃(001) surface was modeled with the goal of adapting a density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamics framework for calculating the adsorption energetics. While DFT is a reliable method for predicting various properties of solids, including crystalline materials comprised of hundreds (or even thousands) of atoms, adding aqueous energetics in heterogeneous systems poses steep challenges for modeling. This is in part due to the fact that environmentally relevant variations in the chemical surroundings cannot be captured atomistically without increasing the system size beyond tractable limits. The DFT + thermodynamics approach to this conundrum is to combine the DFT total energies with tabulated solution-phase data and Nernst-based corrective terms to incorporate experimentally tunable parameters such as concentration. Central to this approach is the design of thermodynamic cycles that partition the overall reaction (here, inner-sphere adsorption proceeding via ligand exchange) into elementary steps that can either be fully calculated or for which tabulated data are available. The ultimate goal is to develop a modeling framework that takes into account subtleties of the substrate (such as adsorption-induced surface relaxation) and energies associated with the aqueous environment such that adsorption at mineral-water interfaces can be reliably predicted, allowing for comparisons in the denticity and protonation state of the adsorbing species. Based on the relative amount of experimental information available for AsO₄^3-, PO₄^3-, and SO₄^2- adsorbates and the well-characterized hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃(001) surface, these systems are chosen to form a basis for assessing the model predictions. We discuss how the DFT + thermodynamics results are in line with the experimental information about the oxyanion sorption behavior. Additionally, a vibrational analysis was conducted for the charge-neutral oxyanion complexes and is compared to the available experimental findings to discern the inner-sphere adsorption phonon modes. The DFT + thermodynamics framework used here is readily extendable to other chemical processes at solid-liquid interfaces, and we discuss future directions for modeling surface processes at mineral-water and environmental interfaces.

Aerosol Acidity: Novel Measurements and Implications for Atmospheric Chemistry

The pH of a solution is one of its most fundamental chemical properties, impacting reaction pathways and kinetics across every area of chemistry. The atmosphere is no different, with the pH of the condensed phase driving key chemical reactions that ultimately impact global climate in numerous ways. The condensed phase in the atmosphere is comprised of suspended liquid or solid particles, known as the atmospheric aerosol, which are differentiated from cloud droplets by their much smaller size (primarily <10 μm). The pH of the atmospheric aerosol can enhance certain chemical reactions leading to the formation of additional condensed phase mass from lower volatility species (secondary aerosol), alter the optical and water uptake properties of particles, and solubilize metals that can act as key nutrients in nutrient-limited ecosystems or cause oxidative stress after inhalation. However, despite the importance of aerosol acidity for climate and health, our fundamental understanding of pH has been limited due to aerosol size (by number >99% of particles are <1 μm) and complexity. Within a single atmospheric particle, there can be hundreds to thousands of distinct chemical species, varying water content, high ionic strengths, and different phases (liquid, semisolid, and solid). Making aerosol analysis even more challenging, atmospheric particles are constantly evolving through heterogeneous reactions with gases and multiphase chemistry within the condensed phase. Based on these challenges, traditional pH measurements are not feasible, and, for years, indirect and proxy methods were the most common way to estimate aerosol pH, with mixed results. However, aerosol pH needs to be incorporated into climate models to accurately determine which chemical reactions are dominant in the atmosphere. Consequently, experimental measurements that probe pH in atmospherically relevant particles are sorely needed to advance our understanding of aerosol acidity.This Account describes recent advances in measurements of aerosol particle acidity, specifically three distinct methods we developed for experimentally determining particle pH. Our acid-conjugate base method uses Raman microspectroscopy to probe an acid (e.g., HSO₄^-) and its conjugate base (e.g., SO₄^2-) in individual micrometer-sized particles. Our second approach is a field-deployable colorimetric method based on pH indicators (e.g., thymol blue) and cell phone imaging to provide a simple, low-cost approach to ensemble average (or bulk) pH for particles in distinct size ranges down to a few hundred nanometers in diameter. In our third method, we monitor acid-catalyzed polymer degradation of a thin film (∼23 nm) of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) on silicon by individual particles with atomic force microscopy (AFM) after inertially impacting particles of different pH. These measurements are improving our understanding of aerosol pH from a fundamental physical chemistry perspective and have led to initial atmospheric measurements. The impact of aerosol pH on key atmospheric processes, such as secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, is discussed. Some unique findings, such as an unexpected size dependence to aerosol pH and kinetic limitations, illustrate that particles are not always in thermodynamic equilibrium with the surrounding gas. The implications of our limited, but improving, understanding of the fundamental chemical concept of pH in the atmospheric aerosol are critical for connecting chemistry and climate.

Indoor acids and bases

Numerous acids and bases influence indoor air quality. The most abundant of these species are CO₂ (acidic) and NH₃ (basic), both emitted by building occupants. Other prominent inorganic acids are HNO₃ , HONO, SO₂ , H₂ SO₄ , HCl, and HOCl. Prominent organic acids include formic, acetic, and lactic; nicotine is a noteworthy organic base. Sources of N-, S-, and Cl-containing acids can include ventilation from outdoors, indoor combustion, consumer product use, and chemical reactions. Organic acids are commonly more abundant indoors than outdoors, with indoor sources including occupants, wood, and cooking. Beyond NH₃ and nicotine, other noteworthy bases include inorganic and organic amines. Acids and bases partition indoors among the gas-phase, airborne particles, bulk water, and surfaces; relevant thermodynamic parameters governing the partitioning are the acid-dissociation constant (K_a ), Henry's law constant (K_H ), and the octanol-air partition coefficient (K_oa ). Condensed-phase water strongly influences the fate of indoor acids and bases and is also a medium for chemical interactions. Indoor surfaces can be large reservoirs of acids and bases. This extensive review of the state of knowledge establishes a foundation for future inquiry to better understand how acids and bases influence the suitability of indoor environments for occupants, cultural artifacts, and sensitive equipment.

Direct observation of anisotropic growth of water films on minerals driven by defects and surface tension

Knowledge of the occurrences of water films on minerals is critical for global biogeochemical and atmospheric processes, including element cycling and ice nucleation. The underlying mechanisms controlling water film growth are, however, misunderstood. Using infrared nanospectroscopy, amplitude-modulated atomic force microscopy, and molecular simulations, we show how water films grow from water vapor on hydrophilic mineral nanoparticles. We imaged films with up to four water layers that grow anisotropically over a single face. Growth usually begins from the near edges of a face where defects preferentially capture water vapor. Thicker films produced by condensation cooling completely engulf nanoparticles and form thicker menisci over defects. The high surface tension of water smooths film surfaces and produces films of inhomogeneous thickness. Nanoscale topography and film surface energy thereby control anisotropic distributions and thicknesses of water films on hydrophilic mineral nanoparticles.

Enveloped Virus Inactivation on Personal Protective Equipment by Exposure to Ozone

Ozone is a highly oxidizing gas easily generated from atmospheric oxygen with inexpensive equipment and is commonly used for the disinfection of municipal water, foods, and surfaces. We report tests of the ability of ozone to inactivate enveloped respiratory viruses (influenza A virus and respiratory syncytial virus), chosen as more easily handled surrogates for SARS-CoV-2, on N95 respirators and other personal protective equipment (PPE) commonly used in hospitals. At 20 ppm, an ozone concentration easily achieved by standard commercial equipment, the viruses were inactivated with high efficiency as long as the relative humidity was above a threshold value of approximately 50%. In the absence of humidity control, disinfection is more variable and requires considerably longer exposure under relatively dry conditions. This report extends the observations of a previous publication (http://doi.org/10.1080/01919510902747969) to hospital-relevant materials and provides additional details about the relationship of humidity to the antiviral activity of ozone. Home CPAP disinfection devices using ozone can provide effective results for individuals. Ozone did not appear to degrade any of the materials tested except for elastic bands if strained during treatment (such as by the pressure exerted by stapled attachment to N95 respirators). The filtration efficiency of N95 respirator material was not compromised. Overall, we recommend exposures of at least 40 minutes to 20 ppm ozone and >70% relative humidity at ambient temperatures (21-24°C) for 4-log (99.99%) reduction of viral infectivity on a variety of PPE, including gowns, face shields, and respirators. Shorter exposure times are likely to be effective under these conditions, but at the risk of some variability for different materials. Higher ozone concentrations and higher humidity levels promoted faster inactivation of viruses. Our work suggests that ozone exposure can be a widely accessible method for disinfecting PPE, permitting safer re-use for healthcare workers and patients alike in times of shortage.

Seasonality of the Water-Soluble Inorganic Ion Composition and Water Uptake Behavior of Urban Grime

Impervious surfaces, especially in urban environments, are coated with a film composed of a complex mixture of substances, referred to as urban grime. Despite its ubiquity, the factors that dictate urban grime composition are still not well understood. Here, we present the first study of the seasonal variation in composition of water-soluble inorganic ions present in urban grime, performed by analyzing samples collected in Toronto for 4-week intervals over the course of a year. A clear seasonality in the composition is evident, with NaCl dominating in the winter months and Ca²⁺ and NO₃^- dominant in the summer. We compare the grime composition to the water-soluble ion composition of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ in order to infer chemistry occurring within the grime and find evidence that chemistry occurring within the urban grime matrix could provide a source of ClNO₂ and NH₃ to the urban atmosphere. The uptake of water by urban grime also shows a clear seasonality, which may be driven by the changing proportions of nitrate salts and/or oxidized organic compounds over the year.

Molecular Insights into NO-Promoted Sulfate Formation on Model TiO2 Nanoparticles with Different Exposed Facets

In this study, molecular insights into NO-promoted SO₂ oxidation on model TiO₂ with well-defined (001), (010), and (101) facets are investigated in the laboratory. The adsorbed SO₂ is significantly promoted to transform into sulfate by the coexisting NO on the three facets. The appearance of active oxygen species indicates an active oxygen species-initiated NO oxidation. The resulting NO₂ acts as an oxidant to convert adsorbed sulfite on hydroxyls to sulfate species. The (101) facet presents the best performance in the NO-promoted sulfate formation possibly owing to its desirable structure to accommodate SO₃^2-, NO₂, and molecular water. The uptake coefficient (γ_t) of SO₂ increases by the coexistence of NO on the (001) facet at 0% RH and is relative humidity (RH) dependent, which first decreases from 0% RH to 32% RH but then increases in the range of 32%-80% RH. The probable explanation is the combined contribution of the blocking effect of water and the hydration of SO₂. The finding in this study provides insight into the possibility of its occurrence on common mineral dusts and requires further investigation.

Surface Water Structure and Hygroscopic Properties of Light Absorbing Secondary Organic Polymers of Atmospheric Relevance

Hygroscopic properties and chemical reactivity of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) influence their overall contribution to the indirect effect on the climate. In this study, we investigate the hygroscopic properties of organic and organometallic polymeric particles, namely polycatechol, polyguaiacol, Fe-polyfumarte, and Fe-polymuconate. These particles efficiently form in iron-catalyzed reactions with aromatic and aliphatic dicarboxylic acid compounds detected in field-collected SOA. The structure of surface water was studied using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the uptake of gas water was quantified using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) as a function of relative humidity. Spectroscopic data show that water bonding with organic functional groups acting as hydrogen bond acceptors causes shifts in their vibrational modes. Analysis of the hydroxyl group stretching region revealed weak and strong hydrogen bonding networks that suggest cluster formation reflecting water-water and water-organics interactions, respectively. A modified Type II multilayer Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption model described the adsorption isotherm on the nonporous materials, polycatechol, polyguaiacol, and Fe-polymuconate. However, water adsorption on porous Fe-polyfumarate was best described using a Type V adsorption model, namely the Langmuir-Sips model that accounts for condensation in pores. The data revealed that organometallic polymers are more hygroscopic than organic polymers. The implications of these investigations are discussed in the context of the chemical reactivity of these particles relative to known SOA.

Extending surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of atmospheric aerosol particles to the accumulation mode (150-800 nm)

Due to their small size, measurements of the complex composition of atmospheric aerosol particles and their surfaces are analytically challenging. This is particularly true for microspectroscopic methods, where it can be difficult to optically identify individual particles smaller than the diffraction limit of visible light (∼350 nm) and measure their vibrational modes. Recently, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been applied to the study of aerosol particles, allowing for detection and characterization of previously undistinguishable vibrational modes. However, atmospheric particles analyzed via SERS have primarily been >1 μm to date, much larger than the diameter of the most abundant atmospheric aerosols (∼100 nm). To push SERS towards more relevant particle sizes, a simplified approach involving Ag foil substrates was developed. Both ambient particles and several laboratory-generated model aerosol systems (polystyrene latex spheres (PSLs), ammonium sulfate, and sodium nitrate) were investigated to determine SERS enhancements. SERS spectra of monodisperse, model aerosols between 400-800 nm were compared with non-SERS enhanced spectra, yielding average enhancement factors of 102 for both inorganic and organic vibrational modes. Additionally, SERS-enabled detection of 150 nm size-selected ambient particles represent the smallest individual aerosol particles analyzed by Raman microspectroscopy to date, and the first time atmospheric particles have been measured at sizes approaching the atmospheric number size distribution mode. SERS-enabled detection and identification of vibrational modes in smaller, more atmospherically-relevant particles has the potential to improve understanding of aerosol composition and surface properties, as well as their impact on heterogeneous and multiphase reactions involving aerosol surfaces.
