New insights into the structure-performance relationships of mesoporous materials in analytical science

A nanoparticle-assisted signal-enhancement technique for lateral flow immunoassays

Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), an affordable and rapid paper-based detection technology, is employed extensively in clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food safety analysis. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the validity and adoption of LFIA in performing large-scale clinical and public health testing. The unprecedented demand for prompt diagnostic responses and advances in nanotechnology have fueled the rise of next-generation LFIA technologies. The utilization of nanoparticles to amplify signals represents an innovative approach aimed at augmenting LFIA sensitivity. This review probes the nanoparticle-assisted amplification strategies in LFIA applications to secure low detection limits and expedited response rates. Emphasis is placed on comprehending the correlation between the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles and LFIA performance. Lastly, we shed light on the challenges and opportunities in this prolific field.

DNA-modified Prussian blue nanozymes for enhanced electrochemical biosensing

Prussian blue nanoparticles exhibit the potential to be employed in bioanalytical applications due to their robust stability, peroxidase-like catalytic functionality, straightforward synthesis, and biocompatibility. An efficient approach is presented for the synthesis of nucleic acid-modified Prussian blue nanoparticles (DNA-PBNPs), utilizing nanoparticle porosity to adsorb nucleic acids (polyT). This strategic adsorption leads to the exposure of nucleic acid sequences on the particle surface while retaining catalytic activity. DNA-PBNPs further couple with functional nucleic acid sequences and aptamers through complementary base pairing to act as transducers in biosensors and amplify signal acquisition. Subsequently, we integrated a copper ion-dependent DNAzyme (Cu2+-DNAzyme) and a vascular endothelial growth factor aptamer (VEGF aptamer) onto screen-printed electrodes to serve as recognition elements for analytes. Significantly, our approach leverages DNA-PBNPs as a superior alternative to traditional enzyme-linked antibodies in electrochemical biosensors, thereby enhancing both the efficiency and adaptability of these devices. Our study conclusively demonstrates the application of DNA-PBNPs in two different biosensing paradigms: the sensitive detection of copper ions and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These results indicate the promising potential of DNA-modified Prussian blue nanoparticles in advancing bioanalytical sensing technologies.

Ordered Mesoporous Crystalline Frameworks Toward Promising Energy Applications

Ordered mesoporous crystalline frameworks (MCFs), which possess both functional frameworks and well-defined porosity, receive considerable attention because of their unique properties including high surface areas, large pore sizes, tailored porous structures, and compositions. Construction of novel crystalline mesoporous architectures that allows for rich accessible active sites and efficient mass transfer is envisaged to offer ample opportunities for potential energy-related applications. In this review, the rational synthesis, unique structures, and energy applications of MCFs are the main focus. After summarizing the synthetic approaches, an emphasis is placed on the delicate control of crystallites, mesophases, and nano-architectures by concluding basic principles and showing representative examples. Afterward, the currently fabricated components of MCFs such as metals, metal oxides, metal sulfides, and metal-organic frameworks are described in sequence. Further, typical applications of MCFs in rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are highlighted. This review ends with the possible development and synthetic challenges of MCFs as well as a future prospect for high-efficiency energy applications, which underscores a pathway for developing advanced materials.

TfR Aptamer-Functionalized MSNs for Enhancing Targeted Cellular Uptake and Therapy of Cancer Cells

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), as novel nanocarriers for drug delivery in cancer treatment, have attracted widespread concern because of their rich pore structure, large pore capacity, ease of modification, and biocompatibility. However, the limitation of nontargeting and low uptake efficiency hindered their further application. Considering the overexpression of the transferrin receptor (TfR) on most cancer cell membranes, herein, we propose a strategy to effectively enhance the cellular internalization of MSNs by arming them with the TfR aptamer. Cellular fluorescent imaging and flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that TfR aptamer-functionalized MSNs exhibited superior cellular internalization compared to unmodified or random sequence-modified MSNs toward three different cancer cell lines, including MCF-7, HeLa, and A549. Furthermore, TfR aptamer-functionalized MSNs displayed enhanced drug delivery efficiency compared with MSNs at equivalent doses and incubation times. These results suggested that TfR aptamer-functionalized MSNs have the potential for enhanced delivery of therapeutic agents into TfR-positive cancer cells to improve therapeutic efficacy.

Rhodamine derivative-functionalized mesoporous silica-Al3+ hybrid material for fluorescence "turn-on" detection of tetracycline antibiotics in aqueous media

The organic-inorganic hybrid material was prepared by embedding 2-amino-3',6'-bis(diethylamino)spiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one (RBH) onto mesoporous SBA-15 silica and coordinating it with Al3+ (RBH-SBA-15-Al3+). RBH-SBA-15-Al3+ was used for the selective and sensitive detection of tetracycline antibiotics (TAs) in aqueous media based on the binding site-signaling unit mechanism, in which Al3+ acted as the binding site and the fluorescence intensity at 586 nm as the response signal. The addition of TAs to RBH-SBA-15-Al3+ suspensions resulted in the formation of RBH-SBA-15-Al3+-TAs conjugates, which realized the electron transfer process and turned-on fluorescence signal at 586 nm. The detection limits for tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline were 0.06, 0.06, and 0.03 µM, respectively. Meanwhile, the detection of TC was feasible in real samples, such as tap water and honey. In addition, RBH-SBA-15 can operate as a TRANSFER logic gate by using Al3+ and TAs as input signals and the fluorescence intensity at 586 nm as output signal. This study proposes an efficient strategy for the selective detection of target analytes by introducing interaction sites (e.g. Al3+) with target analytes in the system.

Preparation of restricted-access boronate affinity adsorbent with excellent anti-protein adsorption property for directly extracting small cis-diol molecules from biological matrices

Boronate affinity adsorbents are of great promise in the enrichment of small cis-diol-containing molecules (cis-diols) from biological matrices. This work develops a restricted-access boronate affinity mesoporous adsorbent, in which boronate sites are only distributed on the internal surface of mesopores and the external surface is a strongly hydrophilic layer. The adsorbent has high binding capacities (30.3 mg g-1, 22.9 mg g-1 and 14.9 mg g-1 for dopamine, catechol and adenosine, respectively) in spite of removal of the boronate sites on the external surface of adsorbent. The adsorption specific of adsorbent towards cis-diols was assessed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) method, and the results show that the adsorbent can selectively extract small cis-diols in the biosamples while exclude proteins completely. Under the optimal d-SPE, the nucleosides and cis-diol drugs in human serum were successfully analyzed by coupling d-SPE with high-performance liquid chromatography. Where, the detection limits are between 6.1 and 13.4 ng mL-1 for four nucleosides, and 24.9 and 34.3 ng mL-1 for two cis-diol drugs; the relative recoveries of all the analytes vary from 84.1% to 110.1% (RSDs <13.4%, n = 6). The results indicate that the adsorbent can directly treat the real biosamples without the necessary protein precipitation steps in advance, thus simplifying the analysis process.

The effects of Fe, Mg, and Pt-doping on the improvement of Ni stabilized on Al2O3-CeO3 catalysts for methane dry reforming

Herein, the promotional effects of Mg, Fe, and Pt on Ni-based catalysts supported on Al2O3-CeO2 (Ni/Al2O3-CeO2) were investigated in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction. The interaction of a suitable amount of MgO and FeO with Ce2O3 stabilized in the catalysts was demonstrated by the temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD). Ce2O3 has a high basicity for adsorbing CO2, generating a monoclinic Ce2O2CO3 species in the DRM reaction. Surface oxygen ions were also produced by adding MgO and FeO, as demonstrated by the temperature-programmed reduction of H2 (H2-TPR). Monoclinic Ce2O2CO3 and surface oxygen may both be used to oxidize and remove the carbon that was deposited, maintaining the high activity and stability of the metal Ni and Pt catalysts. The high dispersion and synergistic interactions between the platinum and oxide phases, which are associated with the decrease in reduction temperature and the rise in the number of basic sites, are responsible for the increased activity of Pt with M-Ni/Al2O3-CeO2 catalysts. The co-doped Ni/Al2O3-CeO2 catalysts with Mg and Fe significantly enhanced the activity (more than 80% methane and 84% CO2 conversion), the selectivity toward syngas (∼90%), and maintained the H2/CO ratio at about 0.97 at 700 °C.

Efficient plasma metabolic fingerprinting as a novel tool for diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer: a large-scale, multicentre study

OBJECTIVE

Metabolic biomarkers are expected to decode the phenotype of gastric cancer (GC) and lead to high-performance blood tests towards GC diagnosis and prognosis. We attempted to develop diagnostic and prognostic models for GC based on plasma metabolic information.

DESIGN

We conducted a large-scale, multicentre study comprising 1944 participants from 7 centres in retrospective cohort and 264 participants in prospective cohort. Discovery and verification phases of diagnostic and prognostic models were conducted in retrospective cohort through machine learning and Cox regression of plasma metabolic fingerprints (PMFs) obtained by nanoparticle-enhanced laser desorption/ionisation-mass spectrometry (NPELDI-MS). Furthermore, the developed diagnostic model was validated in prospective cohort by both NPELDI-MS and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-MS (UPLC-MS).

RESULTS

We demonstrated the high throughput, desirable reproducibility and limited centre-specific effects of PMFs obtained through NPELDI-MS. In retrospective cohort, we achieved diagnostic performance with areas under curves (AUCs) of 0.862-0.988 in the discovery (n=1157 from 5 centres) and independent external verification dataset (n=787 from another 2 centres), through 5 different machine learning of PMFs, including neural network, ridge regression, lasso regression, support vector machine and random forest. Further, a metabolic panel consisting of 21 metabolites was constructed and identified for GC diagnosis with AUCs of 0.921-0.971 and 0.907-0.940 in the discovery and verification dataset, respectively. In the prospective study (n=264 from lead centre), both NPELDI-MS and UPLC-MS were applied to detect and validate the metabolic panel, and the diagnostic AUCs were 0.855-0.918 and 0.856-0.916, respectively. Moreover, we constructed a prognosis scoring system for GC in retrospective cohort, which can effectively predict the survival of GC patients.

CONCLUSION

We developed and validated diagnostic and prognostic models for GC, which also contribute to advanced metabolic analysis towards diseases, including but not limited to GC.

Preparation of COPs Mixed Matrix Membrane for Sensitive Determination of Six Sulfonamides in Human Urine

In this study, TpDMB-COPs, a specific class of covalent organic polymers (COPs), was synthesized using Schiff-base chemistry and incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer for the first time to prepare COPs mixed matrix membranes (TpDMB-COPs-MMM). A membrane solid-phase extraction (ME) method based on the TpDMB-COPs-MMM was developed to extract trace levels of six sulfonamides from human urine identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The key factors affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed method demonstrated an excellent linear relationship in the range of 3.5-25 ng/mL (r2 ≥ 0.9991), with the low limits of detection (LOD) between 1.25 ng/mL and 2.50 ng/mL and the limit of quantification (LOQ) between 3.50 ng/mL and 7.00 ng/mL. Intra-day and inter-day accuracies were below 5.0%. The method's accuracy was assessed by recovery experiments using human urine spiked at three levels (7-14 ng/mL, 10-15 ng/mL, and 16-20 ng/mL). The recoveries ranged from 87.4 to 112.2% with relative standard deviations (RSD) ≤ 8.7%, confirming the applicability of the proposed method. The developed ME method based on TpDMB-COPs-MMM offered advantages, including simple operation, superior extraction affinity, excellent recycling performance, and easy removal and separation from the solution. The prepared TpDMB-COPs-MMM was demonstrated to be a promising adsorbent for ME in the pre-concentration of trace organic compounds from complex matrices, expanding the application of COPs and providing references for other porous materials in sample pre-treatment.

Comprehensive Metabolic Fingerprints Characterize Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder by Nanoparticle-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Timely screening of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and differential diagnosis from myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein associated disorder (MOGAD) are the keys to improving the quality of life of patients. Metabolic disturbance occurs with the development of NMOSD. Still, advanced tools are required to probe the metabolic phenotype of NMOSD. Here, we developed a fast nanoparticle-enhanced laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry assay for multiplexing metabolic fingerprints (MFs) from trace plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in 30 s. Machine learning of the plasma MFs achieved the timely screening of NMOSD from healthy donors with an area under receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.998, and it comprehensively revealed the dysregulated neurotransmitter and energy metabolisms. Combining comprehensive MFs from both plasma and CSF, we constructed an integrated panel for differential diagnosis of NMOSD versus MOGAD with an AUROC of 0.923. This approach demonstrated performance superior to that of human experts in classifying two diseases, especially in antibody assay-limited regions. Together, this approach provides an advanced nanomaterial-based tool for identifying vulnerable populations below the antibody threshold of aquaporin-4 positivity.

Boosting the catalysis of cesium phosphomolybdate encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66 by microenvironment modulation for epoxidation of alkenes

The chemical microenvironment of polyoxometalates (POMs) encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a significant influence on their catalytic performance, which can be easily regulated by the linker functional group alteration or metal substitution in MOFs. Herein, a series of cesium phosphomolybdate (CsPM) encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66-X composites (CsPM@HP-UiO-66-X, X = H, 2CH3, or 2OH, where X represents the alterable group grafted onto the linker benzene ring) were successfully synthesized through a one pot modulated solvothermal method. The catalytic performances of the obtained materials were explored in alkene epoxidation reaction with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH). CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 showed relatively high catalytic activity, stability, and epoxidation selectivity in cyclooctene epoxidation among the CsPM@HP-UiO-66-X composites. Moreover, CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 was effective in the epoxidation of numerous alkenes, especially cyclic alkenes. The superior catalytic activity of CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 is mainly attributed to the modulation of the microenvironment surrounding CsPM active sites by introducing a hydrophobic methyl group. Meanwhile, the size-matched effect, the introduction of cesium cations, and the strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) between CsPM and HP-UiO-66-2CH3 play a crucial role in the stability of CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3.

Mesoporous Iron Family Element (Fe, Co, Ni) Molybdenum Disulfide/Carbon Nanohybrids for High-Performance Supercapacitors

As the demand for fuel continues to increase, the development of energy devices with excellent performance is crucial. Supercapacitors (SCs) are attracting attention for their advantages of high specific energy and a long cycle life. At present, the development of high-performance electrode materials is the main point for research and development of SCs. Transition metal sulfides have the advantages of a large interlayer space and high theoretical capacity, making them promising electrode materials. Herein, we reported a series of ultrathin mesoporous iron family element (Fe, Co, Ni) molybdenum disulfide (MxMo1-xS2/C, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) by a template method. The original monolayer mesoporous structure of MoS2/C was maintained, and accumulation and agglomeration of MoS2/C were avoided. Based on our investigations, the best performance was that of CoxMo1-xS2/C nanohybrids. Furthermore, the concentrations of Co and Mo ions were modulated to obtain the best performance, in which Mo and Co ions were released at 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 ratios and they were named CoxMo1-xS2/C-1, CoxMo1-xS2/C-2, and CoxMo1-xS2/C-3, respectively. Overall, these materials represent a significant improvement and show promise as high-performance SC electrode materials due to their enhanced capacitance and stability. At a current density of 0.5 A g-1, CoxMo1-xS2/C-2 has the optimal specific capacitance of 184 F g-1. CoxMo1-xS2/C-2 as an SC electrode exhibited better reversible capacity and cycling stability than MoS2/C, which is an improvement over MoS2/C regarding reversible capacity and cycling stability.

Curcumin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles for drug delivery: synthesis, biological assays and therapeutic potential - a review

Curcumin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have shown promise as drug delivery systems to address the limited pharmacokinetic characteristics of curcumin. Functionalization with folic acid and PEGylation enhance anticancer activity, biocompatibility, stability, and permeability. Co-delivery with other drugs results in synergistically enhanced cytotoxic activity. Environment-responsive MSNs prevent undesirable drug leakage and increase selectivity towards target tissues. This review summarizes the methods of Cur-loaded MSN synthesis and functionalization and their application in various diseases, and also highlights the potential of Cur-loaded MSNs as a promising drug delivery system.

Ordered Mesoporous Electrodes for Sensing Applications

Electrochemical sensors have become increasingly relevant in fields such as medicine, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control. Selectivity, specificity, sensitivity, signal reproducibility, and robustness are among the most important challenges for their development, especially when the target compound is present in low concentrations or in complex analytical matrices. In this context, electrode modification with Mesoporous Thin Films (MTFs) has aroused great interest in the past years. MTFs present high surface area, uniform pore distribution, and tunable pore size. Furthermore, they offer a wide variety of electrochemical signal modulation possibilities through molecular sieving, electrostatic or steric exclusion, and preconcentration effects which are due to mesopore confinement and surface functionalization. In order to fully exploit these advantages, it is central to develop reproducible routes for sensitive, selective, and robust MTF-modified electrodes. In addition, it is necessary to understand the complex mass and charge transport processes that take place through the film (particularly in the mesopores, pore surfaces, and interfaces) and on the electrode in order to design future intelligent and adaptive sensors. We present here an overview of MTFs applied to electrochemical sensing, in which we address their fabrication methods and the transport processes that are critical to the electrode response. We also summarize the current applications in biosensing and electroanalysis, as well as the challenges and opportunities brought by integrating MTF synthesis with electrode microfabrication, which is critical when moving from laboratory work to in situ sensing in the field of interest.

Dual-template hydrophilic imprinted resin as an adsorbent for highly selective simultaneous extraction and determination of multiple trace plant growth regulators in red wine samples

In recent years, numerous plant growth regulators have been found in foods and have a toxicity to human health, so its simultaneous multiple monitoring is urgently. For the first time, a rapid, accurate, and high-selective method was established to extract and determine multiple plant growth regulators simultaneously in red wines using a new dual-template hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin (DHMIR) as an adsorbent of pipette tip solid-phase extraction coupled with HPLC. The as-prepared DHMIR combined the advantages of the hydrophilicity of hydrophilic resin and multi-imprinted recognition of dual-template molecular imprinting, overcoming the poor imprinted recognition ability of traditional imprinting materials in water and low extraction efficiency to multiple targets. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibited high sensitivity (2.29-3.94 ng mL^-1) and recoveries (80.9-109.0 %) using only 15 mg DHMIR. This study provides an effective strategy for rapid, accurate, low-cost, and high-selective determination of the multiple analytes in food samples.

Precise preparation of biomass-based porous carbon with pore structure-dependent VOCs adsorption/desorption performance by bacterial pretreatment and its forming process

Pore distribution characteristic is one of the most crucial factors for porous adsorption materials, and the variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) approaches about how to simply and accurately tailor practical porous carbons for VOCs adsorption has gradually attracted attention. Here, precursors with different lignocellulose mass ratios have been used to produce porous carbon for model experiments to investigate the influence of the precursor lignocellulose contents on the pore structure and distribution characteristics of porous carbon, and the applicability of these mechanisms to real biomass materials has been further verified through bacteria-targeted bagasse decomposition: the microvolumes of ultra-micropores have decreased with decrease in cellulose contents, while mesopores have followed the reverse trend. The dynamic toluene adsorption/desorption performances of the obtained samples have been tested. The BACs-36 exhibits high toluene adsorption performance in low concentration with 635 mg/g while the BACs-48 shows excellent reusability in 10 times cycles. Based on this the balance between the adsorptive and regenerative capacities has been observed which indicates that carbon materials with abundant micropores and narrow mesopores have much better adsorption performance than porous carbon with a hierarchical pore structure, while the latter show better regeneration abilities than the former, which resulting in less desorption as a counter-acting force at the pore wall. Furthermore, the porous carbon has been shaped by one-step co-pyrolysis method using phenolic resin, which can not only maintain the hardness but also can avoid pore plugging phenomenon.

Preparation of wax-based molecularly imprinted monolith for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction: a hybrid method

The development of molecularly imprinted monolith (MIM) for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) for sample pretreatment is challenging . In this work, a wax-based molecularly imprinted monolith (WMIM) was successfully prepared with a hybrid method by integration of the traditional packing SPE column and MIM, including preparation of the salt column inside the pipette, polymerization of wax-based imprinted column (WIC) outside the pipette, and immobilization of WIC inside the pipette tip. To ensure the penetration of samples and solvents during the PT-SPE, micrometer-range interconnected macropores were tailor-made via the salt-template sacrifice method. For the production of high affinity imprinted sites within the WIC, octadecanoic acid was used as functional monomer in the paraffin matrix. In terms of the adsorption property, the synthesized WIC exhibited a specific affinity to cardiovascular drugs, with an imprinting factor (IF) of 4.8 for the target analyte. Moreover, the WMIM-based PT-SPE was coupled with fluorescence spectrophotometry for the target propranolol determination  (the excitation and emission wavelengths were 294 nm and 343 nm, respectively). This analytical method showed high recovery of target detection in different real samples (R > 90%), good sensitivity, and accuracy (R² = 0.99, LOD = 0.03 ng mL^-1). We believe this work could provide a significant contribution  for the fabrication of MIM and promote an emerging trend of developing elution-free materials for sample pretreatment.

Construction of Covalent Organic Framework Capsule-Based Nanoreactor for Sensitive Glucose Detection

Enzyme immobilization is critical to boosting its application in various areas. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are ideal hosts for enzyme immobilization due to their porous and predesignable structures. Nevertheless, the construction of COFs-based enzyme immobilization systems with high activity via existing immobilization methods (including covalent linkages and channel entrapment) remains a considerable challenge. Herein, a versatile approach was introduced to encapsulate enzymes within hollow COF capsule (named enzyme@COF) using metal-organic frameworks (including ZPF-1(C8H11N4O4.5Zn), ZIF-8(C8H10N4Zn), and ZIF-90(C8H6N4O2Zn)) as sacrificial templates. The obtained porous COF capsule could not only facilitate the efficient mass transfer of enzymatic reactions but also protect enzymes against the incompatible conditions, resulting in enhanced activity and stability of the encapsulated enzymes. Moreover, this approach offered an opportunity to spatially organize multienzymes in COF capsule to construct enzyme cascade system. For instance, glucose oxidase (GOx) and cytochrome c (Cyt c) were coencapsulated within COF capsule to construct GOx-Cyt c cascade. The integration of GOx and Cyt c within COF capsule achieved ∼1.6-fold improvement in catalytic activity than that of free enzymes and the resultant GOx-Cyt c@COF was successfully adopted as a nanoreactor for the sensitive determination of glucose in serum. This work provided a new insight into the design of COFs-based enzyme immobilization systems.

Effects of Various Ripening Media on the Mesoporous Structure and Morphology of Hydroxyapatite Powders

Mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HA) materials demonstrate advantages as catalysts and as support systems for catalysis, as adsorbent materials for removing contamination from soil and water, and as nanocarriers of functional agents for bone-related therapies. The present research demonstrates the possibility of the enlargement of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, and average pore diameter via changing the synthesis medium and ripening the material in the mother solution after the precipitation processes have been completed. HA powders were investigated via chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy. Their SSA, pore volume, and pore-size distributions were determined via low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurements, the zeta potential was established, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was performed. When the materials were synthesized in water-ethanol and water-acetone media, the SSA and total pore volume were 52.1 m²g^-1 and 116.4 m²g^-1, and 0.231 and 0.286 cm³g^-1, respectively. After ripening for 21 days, the particle morphology changed, the length/width aspect ratio decreased, and looser and smaller powder agglomerates were obtained. These changes in their characteristics led to an increase in SSA for the water and water-ethanol samples, while pore volume demonstrated a multiplied increase for all samples, reaching 0.593 cm³g^-1 for the water-acetone sample.

From 1D Nanofibers to 3D Nanofibrous Aerogels: A Marvellous Evolution of Electrospun SiO2 Nanofibers for Emerging Applications

One-dimensional (1D) SiO₂ nanofibers (SNFs), one of the most popular inorganic nanomaterials, have aroused widespread attention because of their excellent chemical stability, as well as unique optical and thermal characteristics. Electrospinning is a straightforward and versatile method to prepare 1D SNFs with programmable structures, manageable dimensions, and modifiable properties, which hold great potential in many cutting-edge applications including aerospace, nanodevice, and energy. In this review, substantial advances in the structural design, controllable synthesis, and multifunctional applications of electrospun SNFs are highlighted. We begin with a brief introduction to the fundamental principles, available raw materials, and typical apparatus of electrospun SNFs. We then discuss the strategies for preparing SNFs with diverse structures in detail, especially stressing the newly emerging three-dimensional SiO₂ nanofibrous aerogels. We continue with focus on major breakthroughs about brittleness-to-flexibility transition of SNFs and the means to achieve their mechanical reinforcement. In addition, we showcase recent applications enabled by electrospun SNFs, with particular emphasis on physical protection, health care and water treatment. In the end, we summarize this review and provide some perspectives on the future development direction of electrospun SNFs.

An efficient photo Fenton system for in-situ evolution of H2O2via defective iron-based metal organic framework@ZnIn2S4 core-shell Z-scheme heterojunction nanoreactor

The fabrication of an efficient photoFenton system without the addition of H₂O₂ is still a challenge and is cost-effective and favorable for practical applications. In this work, a core@shell Z-scheme heterojunction nanoreactor was successfully fabricated, in which hierarchical two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets are coated on defective iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (NH₂-MIL-88B(Fe)), realizing efficient in-situ evolution of H₂O₂ and constructing an optimal heterogeneous Fenton platform. The degradation rates of defective NH₂-MIL-88B(Fe)@ZnIn₂S₄ (0.4 g L^-1) for bisphenol A and ofloxacin under visible light irradiation within 180 min reached 99.4% and 98.5%, respectively, and the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency was approximately 502 μmol h^-1 g^-1. The excellent photoFenton performance was attributed to the introduction of ligand defects into the MOF, which can adjust the band structure to enhance the light absorption capacity, and the in-situ generation of H₂O₂ accelerating the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ conversion. In addition, the formation of the core@shell nanoreactor Z-scheme heterojunction structure promoted spatial charge separation. This strategy offers new ideas for constructing efficient photocatalysis and photoFenton systems.

Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Super-Resolution Imaging

Super-resolution imaging techniques that overcome the diffraction limit of light have gained wide popularity for visualizing cellular structures with nanometric resolution. Following the pace of hardware developments, the availability of new fluorescent probes with superior properties is becoming ever more important. In this context, fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention as bright and photostable probes that address many shortcomings of traditional fluorescent probes. The use of NPs for super-resolution imaging is a recent development and this provides the focus for the current review. We give an overview of different super-resolution methods and discuss their demands on the properties of fluorescent NPs. We then review in detail the features, strengths, and weaknesses of each NP class to support these applications and provide examples from their utilization in various biological systems. Moreover, we provide an outlook on the future of the field and opportunities in material science for the development of probes for multiplexed subcellular imaging with nanometric resolution.

Simple Synthesis of Fe3O4@-Activated Carbon from Wastepaper for Dispersive Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Their UHPLC–PDA Determination in Human Plasma

In the present society, the recycling and reuse of valuable substances are of utmost importance for economic and environmental purposes. At the same time, there is a pressing need to develop new methods to protect the ecosystem from many human activities, including those that have contributed to an ever-increasing presence of pharmaceutical pollutants. In this study, a straightforward approach that applies a magnetic carbon composite for the effective removal of NSAIDs from biological fluids is reported. The composite was produced by recycling wasted handkerchiefs, to provide cellulose to the reactive system and then transformed into carbon via calcination at high temperature. The morphological and structural features of the prepared “Fe3O4@-activated carbon” samples were investigated via thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Magnetic solid-state extraction was carried out to reveal the adsorption capabilities of the magnetic carbon composite and then combined with UHPLC–PDA for the determination and quantification of five NSAIDs (furprofen, indoprofen, ketoprofen, flurbiprofen, and indomethacin). The method developed herein proved to be fast and accurate. The adsorbent could be reused for up to 10 cycles, without any decrease in performance; thus, it contributes to an intelligent and sustainable economic strategy projected toward minimal waste generation.

Glycosyl imprinted mesoporous microspheres for the determination of glycopeptide antibiotics using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry

Glycopeptide antibiotics are critical weapons against serious Gram-positive resistant bacteria, and therefore the development of analytical methods for their determination is essential. In this work, with the aim of extending the scope of molecularly imprinted mesoporous materials to the recognition of large molecules such as proteins and peptides, we selected the glycosyl moiety of glycopeptide antibiotics as a template and synthesised a boronic acid functional monomer by click chemistry reaction to prepare glycosyl imprinted mesoporous microspheres. On the basis of boronate affinity, the template and the functional monomer formed a self-assembly structure that was incorporated into the silica framework during polymerisation. The removal of the glycosyl moiety created cavities with boronic acid groups covalently anchored to the pore walls of the glycosyl imprinted mesoporous microspheres. The resultant microspheres showed regular spherical shape, narrow size distribution and porous structure and exhibited high adsorption capability and fast adsorption kinetics. The size exclusion effect of the mesoporous structure prevents large molecules from entering the cavities, while the glycosyl imprinted cavities provide selectivity for glycopeptide antibiotics. The glycosyl imprinted mesoporous microspheres were employed to separate six glycopeptide antibiotics in serum samples, which were then determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The proposed method exhibited satisfactory linearity in the range of 0.1 to 20.0 μg/L, demonstrating great potential for the determination of glycopeptide antibiotics in serum samples.

Terthiophene-functionalized mesoporous silica-based fluorescence sensor for the detection of trace methyl orange in aqueous media

A terthiophene-functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 silica, i.e., TTU-SBA-15, was successfully developed and used as a highly selective and ultrasensitive fluorescence sensor for methyl orange (MO) detection. When the concentration of MO was increased, the fluorescence emission intensity of TTU-SBA-15 suspensions at 452 nm gradually decreased at an excitation wavelength of 368 nm, and the color of the suspension solutions changed obviously from blue to dark under 365 nm UV light. The fluorescence intensity at 452 nm was linearly proportional to the concentration of MO in the range 0.20 - 2.0 μM, with a detection limit of 0.092 μM. Competitive pollutants, variations in pH, and sample recycling had subtle or negligible effects on the detection of MO. TTU-SBA-15 was applied to the determination of MO in tap water, and recoveries from spiked samples were in the range 98.3 - 103.0%. This study provides a convenient and effective strategy to realize highly sensitive and selective sensors that could target dyes via the functional modification of mesoporous materials.

Magnetic porous biochar as a renewable and highly effective adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

In this study, discarded cigarette butts were used as a precursor for preparing magnetic porous biochar with a facile annealing method. The magnetic porous biochar was applied to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for TCH, which was much higher than various similar materials reported. At the same time, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of TCH were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order models and Freundlich models, respectively. The thermodynamics experiments proved that the adsorption on magnetic porous biochar was an endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was explored, and the outstanding adsorption ability was mainly dependent on the pore filling effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interaction. By using the magnetic porous biochar, the real water samples were treated and high removal efficiency to TCH was obtained. What's more, the excellent reusability endowed the magnetic porous biochar with great potential as adsorbents for practical application.

Quantitative Coassembly for Precise Synthesis of Mesoporous Nanospheres with Pore Structure-Dependent Catalytic Performance

Precise synthesis of porous materials is essential for their applications. Self-assembly is a widely used strategy for synthesizing porous materials, but quantitative control of the assembly process still remains a great challenge. Here, a quantitative coassembly approach is developed for synthesizing resin/silica composite and its derived porous spheres. The assembly behaviors of the carbon and silica precursors are regulated without surfactants and the growth kinetics of the composite spheres are quantitatively controlled. This assembly approach enables the precise control of the size and pore structures of the derived carbon spheres. These carbon spheres provide a good platform to explore the structure-performance relationships of porous materials, and demonstrate their pore structure-dependent performance in catalytic water decontamination. This work provides a simple and robust approach for precise synthesis of porous spheres and brings insights into function-oriented design of porous materials.

Porous Inorganic Materials for Bioanalysis and Diagnostic Applications

Porous inorganic materials play an important role in adsorbing targeted analytes and supporting efficient reactions in analytical science. The detection performance relies on the structural properties of porous materials, considering the tunable pore size, shape, connectivity, etc. Herein, we first clarify the enhancement mechanisms of porous materials for bioanalysis, concerning the detection sensitivity and selectivity. The diagnostic applications of porous material-assisted platforms by coupling with various analytical techniques, including electrochemical sensing, optical spectrometry, and mass spectrometry, etc., are then reviewed. We foresee that advanced porous materials will bring far-reaching implications in bioanalysis toward real-case applications, especially as diagnostic assays in clinical settings.

Material-assisted mass spectrometric analysis of low molecular weight compounds for biomedical applications

Low molecular weight compounds play an important role in encoding the current physiological state of an individual. Laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) offers high sensitivity with low cost for molecular detection, but it is not able to cover small molecules due to the drawbacks of the conventional matrix. Advanced materials are better alternatives, showing little background interference and high LDI efficiency. Herein, we first classify the current materials with a summary of compositions and structures. Matrix preparation protocols are then reviewed, to enhance the selectivity and reproducibility of MS data better. Finally, we highlight the biomedical applications of material-assisted LDI MS, at the tissue, bio-fluid, and cellular levels. We foresee that the advanced materials will bring far-reaching implications in LDI MS towards real-case applications, especially in clinical settings.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Hierarchically Porous Materials: Synthesis and Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely recognized as one of the most fascinating classes of materials from science and engineering perspectives, benefiting from their high porosity and well-defined and tailored structures and components at the atomic level. Although their intrinsic micropores endow size-selective capability and high surface area, etc., the narrow pores limit their applications toward diffusion-control and large-size species involved processes. In recent years, the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs), MOF-based hierarchically porous composites, and MOF-based hierarchically porous derivatives has captured widespread interest to extend the applications of conventional MOF-based materials. In this Review, the recent advances in the design, synthesis, and functional applications of MOF-based hierarchically porous materials are summarized. Their structural characters toward various applications, including catalysis, gas storage and separation, air filtration, sewage treatment, sensing and energy storage, have been demonstrated with typical reports. The comparison of HP-MOFs with traditional porous materials (e.g., zeolite, porous silica, carbons, metal oxides, and polymers), subsisting challenges, as well as future directions in this research field, are also indicated.

One-step fabrication of strongly hydrophilic mesoporous silica for comprehensive analysis of serum glycopeptidome

Glycopeptidome represents reliable predictors of physiological and pathological status. Obstructions mainly including low abundance of endogenous glycopeptides and varied interference necessitate glycopeptide enrichment prior to MS analysis. Inspired by the prevalence of hydrophilic interaction chromatography for glycopeptide enrichment, a novel magnetic mesoporous silica nanomaterial (Fe₃O₄@mSiO₂-TSG) with strongly hydrophilic property was developed through a one-pot method. In this work, the gluconamide-containing organosilane is innovatively proposed to directly serve as the strongly hydrophilic silica source for fabrication of hydrophilic mesoporous silica nanomaterial for glycopeptidomics research. Apart from excellent hydrophilicity, Fe₃O₄@mSiO₂-TSG also was equipped with large specific surface area, ordered mesopore channels and great magnetic responsiveness. With all the advantages, Fe₃O₄@mSiO₂-TSG displayed remarkable size-exclusion effect and considerable reusability. Moreover, combined with nano-LC-MS/MS, the glycopeptidome of serum from breast cancer patients was analyzed comprehensively, which showed noteworthy difference from healthy serum through gene ontology analysis, indicating great potential of the approach for glycopeptidomics research.

Based on Gold Nanoparticles-L-Tyr-Amino Functionalized Mesoporous Materials-Polyphenol Oxidase Modified Biosensor for the Detection of Resorcinol

Nowadays, resorcinol (RC) has been widely applied in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. However, the electrochemical detection technique of RC still features some significant drawbacks, for instance, a low sensitivity. Hence, in the present work, a glass carbon electrode was developed for the electrochemical detection of RC with good specificity and stability, through modifying the glass carbon electrode (GCE) by polyphenol oxidase (PPO), an NH₂-SBA-15 mesoporous material (NH₂-SBA-15), L-tyrosine (L-Tyr) and gold nano-particles (AuNPs). After being successively modified by AuNPs, L-Tyr, NH₂-SBA-15 and PPO, the constructed PPO/NH₂-SBA-15/L-Tyr/AuNPs/GCE was used to discriminate RC from ions and other common micromolecules, which showed a fairly good specificity and stability. The proposed electrochemical detection method features a linear range of from 0.5 to 21.0 μM with a LOD down to 0.15 μM, revealing a better sensitivity than the existing methods. It is worth mentioning that the proposed PPO/NH₂-SBA-15/L-Tyr/AuNPs/GCE has been successfully used as an electrochemical probe for the RC assay in domestic sewage.

Biosensors Coupled with Signal Amplification Technology for the Detection of Pathogenic Bacteria: A Review

Foodborne disease caused by foodborne pathogens is a very important issue in food safety. Therefore, the rapid screening and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens is of great significance for ensuring food safety. At present, many research works have reported the application of biosensors and signal amplification technologies to achieve the rapid and sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria. Thus, this review summarized the use of biosensors coupled with signal amplification technology for the detection of pathogenic bacteria, including (1) the development, concept, and principle of biosensors; (2) types of biosensors, such as electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, microfluidic biosensors, and so on; and (3) different kinds of signal amplification technologies applied in biosensors, such as enzyme catalysis, nucleic acid chain reaction, biotin-streptavidin, click chemistry, cascade reaction, nanomaterials, and so on. In addition, the challenges and future trends for pathogenic bacteria based on biosensor and signal amplification technology were also discussed and summarized.

Metal-phenolic network coatings for engineering bioactive interfaces

The surface modification of biomaterials is crucial for constructing bioactive interfaces capable of interacting with specific biomolecules, controlling cell behavior and regulating biological processes. Because of their excellent biocompatibility, facile preparation, pH-responsiveness and universal adhesion, surface coatings made from metal-phenolic network (MPN) have attracted extensive attention for handling interfacial properties and designing biomaterials in recent years. Different methods and technologies for assembling MPN coatings are summarized and compared in this paper, followed by highlighting the advantages of MPN coatings as bioactive interfaces for controlling biological process at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. Current challenges and prospects of MPN coatings for biomedical applications are also discussed.

Protein-, polymer-, and silica-based luminescent nanomaterial probes for super resolution microscopy: a review

Super resolution microscopy was developed to overcome the Abbe diffraction limit, which effects conventional optical microscopy, in order to study the smaller components of biological systems. In recent years nanomaterials have been explored as luminescent probes for super resolution microscopy, as many have advantages over traditional fluorescent dye molecules. This review will summarize several different types of nanomaterial probes, covering quantum dots, carbon dots, and dye doped nanoparticles. For the purposes of this review the term "nanoparticle" will be limited to polymer-based, protein-based, and silica-based nanoparticles, including core-shell structured nanoparticles. Luminescent nanomaterials have shown promise as super-resolution probes, and continued research in this area will yield new advances in both materials science and biochemical microscopy at the nanometer scale.

Plasmonic Alloys Reveal a Distinct Metabolic Phenotype of Early Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer (GC) is a multifactorial process, accompanied by alterations in metabolic pathways. Non-invasive metabolic profiling facilitates GC diagnosis at early stage leading to an improved prognostic outcome. Herein, mesoporous PdPtAu alloys are designed to characterize the metabolic profiles in human blood. The elemental composition is optimized with heterogeneous surface plasmonic resonance, offering preferred charge transfer for photoinduced desorption/ionization and enhanced photothermal conversion for thermally driven desorption. The surface structure of PdPtAu is further tuned with controlled mesopores, accommodating metabolites only, rather than large interfering compounds. Consequently, the optimized PdPtAu alloy yields direct metabolic fingerprints by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry in seconds, consuming 500 nL of native plasma. A distinct metabolic phenotype is revealed for early GC by sparse learning, resulting in precise GC diagnosis with an area under the curve of 0.942. It is envisioned that the plasmonic alloy will open up a new era of minimally invasive blood analysis to improve the surveillance of cancer patients in the clinical setting.

Ent-11α-hydroxy-15-oxo-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid loaded onto fluorescent mesoporous silica nanoparticles for the location and therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Ent-11α-hydroxy-15-oxo-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (5F) is a diterpenoid that is isolated and purified from the Chinese herbal medicine Pteris semipinnata L., and is known to exert antitumour activity in several kinds of malignant cancer cells by leading cancer cells to apoptosis. However, the antitumour effect of 5F in vivo is rarely reported due to the complexity of the physiological environment and limitations of 5F as a small anticancer drug. In the present study, we utilized FITC-doped nanoparticles for the accumulation and delivery of 5F in nasopharyngeal carcinoma CNE2 tumours transplanted in nude mice by the enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect. In vivo studies demonstrated that nanoparticles could efficiently deliver 5F in CNE2 transplanted tumours, and the tumour growth was effectively inhibited by the drug-loaded nanoparticles with minimal side effects. The study indicated the benefits of combining well-studied nanoparticles with traditional herbal medicine treatment and establishes a delivery platform for 5F chemotherapy.
