Understanding photochemical degradation mechanisms in photoactive layer materials for organic solar cells

Over the past decades, the field of organic solar cells (OSCs) has witnessed a significant evolution in materials chemistry, which has resulted in a remarkable enhancement of device performance, achieving efficiencies of over 19%. The photoactive layer materials in OSCs play a crucial role in light absorption, charge generation, transport and stability. To facilitate the scale-up of OSCs, it is imperative to address the photostability of these electron acceptor and donor materials, as their photochemical degradation process remains a challenge during the photo-to-electric conversion. In this review, we present an overview of the development of electron acceptor and donor materials, emphasizing the crucial aspects of their chemical stability behavior that are linked to the photostability of OSCs. Throughout each section, we highlight the photochemical degradation pathways for electron acceptor and donor materials, and their link to device degradation. We also discuss the existing interdisciplinary challenges and obstacles that impede the development of photostable materials. Finally, we offer insights into strategies aimed at enhancing photochemical stability and discuss future directions for developing photostable photo-active layers, facilitating the commercialization of OSCs.

Electronic and Nonlinear Optical Properties of B(III)-Submonoazaporphyrin-π-Diimide Compounds: A Density Functional Theory Study

Three hypothetical complexes were designed using diimides (PMDI, NTCDI, and PTCDI) as the acceptor unit and B(III)-submonoazaporphyrin (1) as the donor unit. These complexes have smaller HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (3.39-3.96 eV) than pristine 1 (6.61 eV). Further, the energy gap can be tuned by changing the number of benzene rings of these diimides. Remarkably, these proposed complexes possess considerable first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) (4865-6921 a.u.), and the regularity of the β0 values remained the same in the gas phase and toluene solvent conditions. There is an inverse relationship between the energy gap and the polarizability/first hyperpolarizability. In addition, absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals, and hole electron distributions were obtained using time-dependent density functional theory calculations to emphasize the relationship between structure and properties. Ultraviolet-Visible absorption spectra reveals that all complexes show satisfying IR working regions. Further analysis of the first hyperpolarizability density reveals the nature of the excellent NLO properties of the studied systems. This study can provide valuable insights for the development of potential high-performance NLO molecules.

Unraveling Interfacial Photoinduced Charge Transfer and Localization in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals/Naphthalenediimide

Halide perovskites have attracted much attention for energy conversion. However, efficient charge carrier generation, separation, and mobility remain the most important issues limiting the higher efficiency of solar cells. An efficient interfacial charge transfer process associated with exciton dynamics between all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and organic electron acceptors has been suggested. We observed a strong PL quenching of 78% in thin films when silane-functionalized naphthalenediimides (SNDI), used as electron-acceptors, are anchored on CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Optical and structural characterizations confirm the charge transfer process without QDs degradation. The issue of whether these transferred charges are indeed available for utilization in solar cells remains uncertain. Our results reveal that the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals capped with these electron-acceptor SNDI molecules show a drastic increase in the electrical resistance and the absence of a photoconductivity effect. The results suggest charge transfer followed by strong localization of the charge carriers, preventing their extraction toward the electrodes of solar cell devices. We hope that this crucial aspect to attract attention and unveil a potential mechanism for charge delocalization, which could, in turn, lead to a groundbreaking enhancement in solar cell efficiency.

Naphthalene diimide-Annulated Heterocyclic Acenes: Synthesis, Electrochemical and Semiconductor Properties and their Multifaceted Applications

Acenes and Naphthalene Diimides (NDIs) stand as distinguished classes of organic compounds, each possessing unique and intriguing properties that have garnered significant attention across various scientific disciplines. Acenes, characterized by linearly fused aromatic rings, have captivated researchers due to their diverse electronic structures and promising applications in materials science. On the other hand, NDIs, known for their distinctive electron-accepting properties, exhibit remarkable versatility in fields ranging from organic electronics, supramolecular to spin chemistry. In this review, we navigate through the fascinating realms of both acenes and NDIs before converging our focus on the highly diverse and distinctive subgroup of NDI-annulated heterocyclic acenes. This potentially important subgroup, has emerged as a subject of intense investigation, encapsulating their fascinating synthesis, optical and electrochemical characteristics, and multifaceted applications that span the realms of chemistry, physics, and biology. Through the exploration of their synthetic strategies, unique properties, and diverse applications, this review aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal role played by NDI-based heterocyclic acenes in contemporary multidisciplinary research and technological innovation.

Aggregation-Induced Emission of Naphthalene Diimides: Effect of Chain Length on Liquid and Solid-Phase Emissive Properties

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of a systematic series of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) varying the chain length at the imide positions have been studied. A solvophobic collapse of NDI units through the flash injection of THF NDI solutions in sonicating water triggers the formation of stable suspensions with enhanced fluorescence emissions. Shorter chains favor the π-π stacking of NDI units through H-aggregation producing a strong AIE effect showing remarkably high quantum yields that have not been observed for non core-substitued NDIs previously. On the other hand, NDIs functionalized with longer chains lead to more disordered domains where π-π stacking between NDI units is mainly given by J-aggregation unfavoring the AIE effect.

Synthesis and Characterization of Two Novel Naphthalenediimide/Zinc Phosphonate Crystalline Materials Precipitated from Different Solvents

Hybrid naphthalenediimide/zinc phosphonate materials (NDI/Zn) were prepared by mixing solutions of N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (PNDI) and zinc nitrate, resulting in the precipitation of the desired compounds. Samples precipitated from water and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were produced. The obtained samples had the expected elemental composition, and the presence of naphthalenediimides (NDI) was ascertained by infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. All the samples were crystalline, according to powder X-ray diffraction. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms showed the presence of porosity in the NDI/Zn samples. Mesopores with a diameter = 4.1 nm were present in the sample from DMF, with total pore volume reaching 0.13 cm3/g.

Polyfluorinated Naphthalene-bis-hydrazimide for Solution-Grown n-Type Semiconducting Films

Naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimides (NDIs), possessing low-lying and tunable LUMO levels, are of wide interest for their aptitude to provide cost-effective, flexible, and environmentally stable n-type organic semiconductors through simple solution processing. NDI-based aromatic hydrazidimides are herein studied in relation to their chemical and environmental stability and as spin-coated stable thin films. In the case of the pentafluorinated residue, these were found to be crystalline, highly oriented, and molecularly flat (roughness = 0.3 nm), based on optical and atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction in specular and grazing incidence geometry, and X-ray reflectivity measurements. A new polymorph, previously undetected during the isolation of bulk powders or in their controlled thermal treatments, is found in the thin film and was metrically and structurally characterized from 2D GIWAXS patterns (monoclinic, P2/c, a = 17.50; b = 4.56; c = 14.24 Å; β = 84.8°). This new thin-film phase, TF-F5, is formed no matter whether silicon, glass, or polymethylmethacrylate substrates are used, thus opening the way to the preparation of solution-grown flexible semiconducting films. The TF-F5 films exhibit a systematic and rigorous molecular alignment with both orientation and packing favorable to electron mobility (μ = 0.02 cm2 V-1 s-1). Structural and morphological differences are deemed responsible for the absence of measurable conductivity in thin films of polyfluorinated analogues bearing -CF3 residues on the hydrazidimide aromatic rings.

π-Extended benzo[1,2:4,5]di[7]annulene bis(dicarboximide)s - a new class of non-alternant polycyclic aromatic dicarboximides

Aromatic dicarboximides are a class of molecules represented by the well-known rylene bis(dicarboximide)s, in particular perylene or naphthalene bis(dicarboximide)s, which show pronounced optoelectronic properties and are applied as color pigments, fluorescent dyes and organic semiconductors. Herein we extend the family of aromatic bis(dicarboximide)s and report the synthesis of the first series of non-alternant aromatic dicarboximides by twofold Pd-catalyzed [5 + 2] annulation. Characterization by UV/vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements give insight into the optoelectronic characteristics of the hitherto unexplored substance class of heptagon-containing imides. Theoretical studies by nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) XY-scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) plots demonstrate the influence of both the non-alternant carbon framework and the imide moieties on aromaticity of the synthesized bisimides.

A Supramolecular Naphthalene Diimide Radical Anion with Efficient NIR-II Photothermal Conversion for E. coli-Responsive Photothermal Therapy

We report a supramolecular naphthalene diimide (NDI) radical anion with efficient NIR-II photothermal conversion for E. coli-responsive photothermal therapy. The supramolecular radical anion (NDI-2CB[7])⋅- , which is obtained from the E. coli-induced in situ reduction of NDI-2CB[7] neutral complex, formed by the host-guest interaction between an NDI derivative and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), exhibits unexpectedly strong NIR-II absorption and remarkable photothermal conversion capacity in aqueous solution. The NIR-II absorption is caused by the self-assembly of NDI radical anions to form supramolecular dimer radicals in aqueous solution, which is supported by theoretically predicted spectra. The (NDI-2CB[7])⋅- demonstrates excellent NIR-II photothermal antimicrobial activity (>99 %). This work provides a new approach for constructing NIR-II photothermal agents and non-contact treatments for bacterial infections.

Recent Advances in Applications of Fluorescent Perylenediimide and Perylenemonoimide Dyes in Bioimaging, Photothermal and Photodynamic Therapy

The emblematic perylenediimide (PDI) motif which was initially used as a simple dye has undergone incredible development in recent decades. The increasing power of synthetic organic chemistry has allowed it to decorate PDIs to achieve highly functional dyes. As these PDI derivatives combine thermal, chemical and photostability, with an additional high absorption coefficient and near-unity fluorescence quantum yield, they have been widely studied for applications in materials science, particularly in photovoltaics. Although PDIs have always been in the spotlight, their asymmetric counterparts, perylenemonoimide (PMI) analogues, are now experiencing a resurgence of interest with new efforts to create architectures with equally exciting properties. Namely, their exceptional fluorescence properties have recently been used to develop novel systems for applications in bioimaging, biosensing and photodynamic therapy. This review covers the state of the art in the synthesis, photophysical characterizations and recently reported applications demonstrating the versatility of these two sister PDI and PMI compounds. The objective is to show that after well-known applications in materials science, the emerging trends in the use of PDI- and PMI-based derivatives concern very specific biomedicinal applications including drug delivery, diagnostics and theranostics.

Molecular Design and Crystal Chemistry of Polyfluorinated Naphthalene-bis-phenylhydrazimides with Superior Thermal and Polymorphic Stability and High Solution Processability

Naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimides (NDIs) are highly promising air-stable n-type molecular semiconductor candidates for flexible and cost-effective organic solar cells and thermoelectrics. Nonetheless, thermal and polymorphic stabilities of environmentally stable NDIs in the low-to-medium temperature regime (<300 °C) remain challenging properties. Structural, thermal, spectroscopic, and computational features of polyfluorinated NDI-based molecular solids (with up to 14 F atoms per NDI molecule) are discussed upon increasing the fluorination level. Slip-stacked arrangement of the NDI cores with suitable π-π stacking and systematically short interplanar distances (<3.2 Å) are found. All these materials exhibit superior thermal stability (up to 260 °C or above) and thermal expansion coefficients indicating a response compatible with flexible polymeric substrates. Optical bandgaps increase from 2.78 to 2.93 eV with fluorination, while LUMO energy levels decrease down to -4.37 eV, as shown per DFT calculations. The compounds exhibit excellent solubility of 30 mg mL^-1 in 1,4-dioxane and DMF.

Periodic mesoporous organosilicas containing naphthalenediimides as organic sensitizers for sulfadiazine photodegradation

In this work, periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) functionalized with the organic sentisizer naphthalenediimide (NDI) were employed as heterogeneous catalysts for the photodegradation of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ), taken as a model for contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). The catalysts, designated as PMONDI, were prepared by surfactant-directed co-condensation of the precursor N,N'-bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)- 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide with tetraethoxysilane. The synthesized PMONDI were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption isotherms and small and large angle x-ray scattering. The performance of PMONDI catalysts in the photodegradation of SDZ was compared to that of TiO₂ nanoparticles impregnated into SBA-15 mesoporous silica (TiO₂/SBA-15), under irradiation with a Hg lamp with a bandpass filter of 320-500 nm. Under optimal conditions, PMONDI degraded 100% of the SDZ in 45 min, while the total degradation of SDZ was achieved only after 150 min with TiO₂/SBA-15. PMONDI also performed better than TiO₂/SBA-15 in reuse tests. The mechanism of photodegradation with PMONDI involves the formation of excited triplet states of NDI (³NDI*) upon irradiation, which can then react with molecular oxygen to form reactive oxygen species, which degrade SDZ. Analysis of the SDZ degradation products indicated two main pathways: (1) hydroxylation of the aniline ring and (2) SO₂ extrusion and rearrangement, followed by oxidation of the aniline ring to nitrobenzene. In conclusion, the great potential of the PMONDI materials as photocatalysts for CECs degradation was demonstrated in this work, encouraging further research on these materials for the degradation of pollutants.

Synthesis and Properties of Electron-Deficient and Electron-Rich Redox-Active Ionic π-Systems

There is growing interest towards the design and synthesis of organic redox-active systems, which exist in ionic form. Multi- redox systems entail life-sustaining processes like photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The significant challenge for material scientists is to rationally design complex molecular materials that can store and transfer multiple electrons at low operational potentials and are stable under ambient conditions. Also, important are the designed ionic π-systems that combine efficient electron and ion transport. Here, we discuss the synthesis of ionic π-systems which exist in the closed-shell form. Firstly, different classes of ionic arylenediimides and viologens with different π-linkers are discussed from the synthetic, structural and redox perspective. These ionic π-systems are based on the electron deficient π-scaffolds, and are shown to accumulate upto six electrons. We then discuss electron-rich ionic arylenediimides which can exist in anionic form or zwitterionic form. The anionic electron donors have absorption extending to the near Infrared (NIR) region and can be stabilized in aqueous solution. We also discuss the effect of the electron accumulation on the aromaticity and non-aromaticity of the naphthalene and the imide rings of the naphthalenediimides. We finally discuss in brief, the applications related to the organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors.

Improved Syntheses of Halogenated Benzene-1,2,3,4-Tetracarboxylic Diimides

The preparation of halogenated benzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic diimide derivatives is challenging because of the possibility of competitive incorrect cyclizations and S_NAr reactivity. Here, we demonstrate that bypassing traditional cyclic anhydrides and instead directly reacting dihalobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acids with primary amines in acetic acid solvent successfully provides a range of desirable ortho-diimide products in good yields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that sterically challenging N-derivatizations can be readily achieved under microwave reactor conditions. The halogenated diimides described here are attractive building blocks for organic materials chemistry.

Photocatalytic performance of heterojunction S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO2 formed by self-assembled naphthalimide derivatives and titanium dioxide

In this paper, a type of heterojunction photocatalyst S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ was prepared by self-assembly of tyrosine-substituted naphthamide (NDA) and bonding with titanium dioxide. The self-assembly process and driving force of monomer M-Tyr-NDI-Tyr were simulated by theoretical calculation. Taking atenolol as the target pollutant, the photocatalytic performance of the heterojunction photocatalyst under visible light was studied, and the degradation products were analyzed by mass spectrometry. The environmental toxicity of photocatalytic process was evaluated by luminescent bacteria. The principle of high photocatalytic activity of S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed by analyzing the fluorescence spectrum, photocurrent density and resistance, electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum, free radical capture experiment and energy band position of S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of different pollutants by S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst was also studied. This work will provide a useful example for the further development of new and efficient organic supramolecular/inorganic semiconductor composite photocatalysts.

Synthesis of a Highly Electron-Deficient, Water-Stable, Large Ionic Box: Multielectron Accumulation and Proton Conductivity

π-acidic boxes exhibiting electron reservoir and proton conduction are unprecedented because of their instability in water. We present the synthesis of one of the strongest electron-deficient ionic boxes showing e^- uptake as well as proton conductivity. Two large anions fit in the box to form anion-π interactions and form infinite anion-solvent wires. The box with NO₃^-···water wires confers high proton conductivity and presents the first example that manifests redox and ionic functionality in an organic electron-deficient macrocycle.

Radical Anions and Dianions of Naphthalenediimides Generated within Layer-by-Layer Zirconium Phosphonate Thin Films

Chemical reduction of N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (PNDI) with the reducing agent sodium dithionite gave stable colored reduced species, both in homogeneous solutions and in self-assembled thin films. When colorless PNDI aqueous solutions were titrated with the reducing agent, stepwise reduction was observed, giving first the radical anion (PNDI^-•) and then the dianion (PNDI^2-) species, which were detected by UV-visible-NIR spectroscopy, allowing the unambiguous determination of absorption maxima and molar absorptivities for each species. The radical anion PNDI^-• was found to form π-dimers in water, but monomeric PNDI^-• was formed in the presence of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, indicating association with the micelles. Thin films of PNDI with 25 layers were grown by the zirconium phosphonate method on quartz substrates. Reduction of the films with sodium dithionite also produced radical anions and dianions of PNDI. However, reduction in the films was much slower than in solution, evidencing the compactness of the films. Moreover, reduction in the films did not proceed to completion, even with excess of the reducing agent, which can be attributed to the repulsion of negative charges within the film.

Facile synthesis of an ambient stable pyreno[4,5-b]pyrrole monoanion and pyreno[4,5-b:9,10-b']dipyrrole dianion: from serendipity to design

The stability of singly or multiply negatively charged π-conjugated organic compounds is greatly influenced by their electronic delocalization. Herein, we report a strategic methodology for isolation of a mysterious compound. The isolated compounds, a pyreno[4,5-b]pyrrole monoanion and pyreno[4,5-b:9,10-b′]dipyrrole dianion, were highly stable under ambient conditions due to high delocalization of the negative charge over multiple electron deficient C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N groups and pyrene π-scaffolds and allowed purification by column chromatography. To our knowledge, this is the first report on TCNE type reductive condensation of malononitrile involving pyrene di- and tetraone and formation of pyrenopyrrole. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. A UV-vis spectroscopic study shows an intense low energy absorption band with a large absorption coefficient (ε).

An ambient stable pyreno[4,5-b]pyrrole monoanion and pyreno[4,5-b:9,10-b′]dipyrrole dianion have been isolated and characterized, showing a low energy intense absorption band with the absorption coefficient reaching 7.1 × 10⁴ dm³ mol⁻¹ cm⁻¹.

Substituent-dependent absorption and fluorescence properties of perylene bisimide radical anions and dianions

Perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximides) (PBIs) rank among the most important functional dyes and organic semiconductors, but only recently have their radical anions and dianions attracted interest for a variety of applications. Here, we systematically elucidate the functional properties (redox, absorption, and emission) of five PBI anions and dianions bearing different bay-substituents attached to the chromophore core. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal the influence of the substituents ranging from electron-withdrawing cyano to electron-donating phenoxy groups on the oxidation and reduction potentials that relate to the HOMO and LUMO levels ranging from -7.07 eV to -6.05 eV and -5.01 eV to -4.05 eV, respectively. Spectroelectrochemical studies reveal a significant number of intense absorption bands in the NIR-spectral range (750-1400 nm) for the radical anions, whereas the dianionic species are characterized by similar spectra to those for the neutral dyes, however being bathochromically shifted and with increased molar extinction coefficients of approximately 100 000 M^-1 cm^-1. The increase of the transition dipole moment is up to 56% and accompanied by an almost cyanine-like red-shifted (by 300 nm) absorption spectrum for the most electron-poor tetracyanotetrachloro PBI. Whilst the outstanding fluorescence properties of the neutral PBIs are lost for the radical anions, an appreciable near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence with a quantum yield of up to 18% is revealed for the dianions by utilizing a custom-built flow-cell spectroelectrochemistry setup. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations help to assign the absorption bands to the respective electronic transitions.

Red fluorescent zwitterionic naphthalenediimides with di/mono-benzimidazolium and a negatively-charged oxygen substituent

The C-H/C-X cross-coupling of a benzimidazolium salt with 2Br-NDI afforded two unprecedented zwitterionic NDIs with di/mono-benzimidazolium and an extra negatively-charged oxygen substituent. They exhibited intensified red fluorescence in polar solvents and negative solvatochromism due to an intramolecular charge transfer process, and could specifically label lysosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum in living A549 cells, respectively. They represent a rare case of NDI-derived ionic fluorophores.

Redox-Switchable Cycloisomerization of Alkynoic Acids with Napthalenediimide-Derived N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

Two naphthalene-diimide (NDI) bis-imidazolium salts have been used as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors for the preparation of NDI-functionalized complexes of rhodium and iridium of general formula [MCl(NDI-NHC)(COD)] (M=Rh, Ir; NDI-NHC=NDI-functionalized NHC ligand). Comparison of the IR spectra of the complexes [IrCl(NDI-NHC)(CO)2 ] and their related one- and two-electron reduced forms, reveal that each one-electron reduction produces a decrease of the average ν(CO) of 9-10 cm-1 , indicating a significant enhancement of the electron-richness of the metal. The [MCl(NDI-NHC)(COD)] complexes were tested in the catalytic cycloisomerization of alkynoic acids. The one-electron reduced forms showed greatly enhanced activities. For the cyclization of 5-hexynoic acid, the two-electron reduction of the ligand produced further enhancement of the catalytic activity, therefore showing that the catalyst can switch between three redox species with three distinct catalytic activities.

Chiral Perylene Bisimide Dyes by Interlocked Arene Substituents in the Bay Area

A series of perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes bearing various aryl substituents in 1,6,7,12 bay positions has been synthesized by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. These molecules exhibit an exceptionally large and conformationally fixed twist angle of the PBI π-core due to the high steric congestion imparted by the aryl substituents in bay positions. Single crystal X-ray analyses of phenyl-, naphthyl- and pyrenyl-functionalized PBIs reveal interlocked π-π-stacking motifs, leading to conformational chirality and the possibility for the isolation of enantiopure atropoisomers by semipreparative HPLC. The interlocked arrangement endows these molecules with substantial racemization barriers of about 120 kJ mol-1 for the tetraphenyl- and tetra-2-naphthyl-substituted derivatives, which is among the highest racemization barriers for axially chiral PBIs. Variable temperature NMR studies reveal the presence of a multitude of up to fourteen conformational isomers in solution that are interconverted via smaller activation barriers of about 65 kJ mol-1 . The redox and optical properties of these core-twisted PBIs have been characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis/NIR and fluorescence spectroscopy and their respective atropo-enantiomers were further characterized by circular dichroism (CD) and circular polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy.

Tuning the LUMO Levels of Z-Shaped Perylene Diimide via Stepwise Cyanation

The central dogma in constructing organic electron acceptors is to attach electron-withdrawing groups to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Yet, the full potentials of many organic acceptors were never realized due to synthetic obstacles. By combining the Wittig-Knoevenagel benzannulation, the Pd(0)-catalyzed cyanation, and nucleophilic addition/oxidation cyanation, six polynitrile Z-shaped perylene diimide were synthesized. These stable and soluble electron acceptors possess LUMO energy levels comparable with those of benchmark compounds. Electrochemical investigation reveals that each additional nitrile group reduces the LUMO energy by 0.2 eV.

Anions effect construction of 1D naphthalene diimide supramolecular chains by π interactions and fluorescence detect iodide anion

Five diverse 1D supramolecular chains, {[4-pmntd]}_n(1), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2Br^-}_n(2), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2NO₃^-}_n(3), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2ClO₄^-}_n(4), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2BF₄^-}_n(5), (where 4-pmntd was N,N'-bis (4-pyridylmethyl)naphthalene diimide) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, IR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, fluorescence detection. The anions effect construction of their 1D chain structural diversity through different π interactions. Compound 1 through the adjacent pyridine rings parallel π∙∙∙π interactions formed 1D linear chain structure. Compound 2 through Br^- anion∙∙∙π interactions and halogenbond interactions formed 1D zigzag chain structure. Compound 3 through lone pair∙∙∙π interactions of naphthalene diimide and the adjacent carboxyl group formed 1D stairway chain structure. Compound 4 through ClO₄^- anion∙∙∙π interactions formed 1D ribbon chain structure. Compound 5 through parallel π∙∙∙π interactions of the adjacent naphthalene diimide planes and pyridine rings formed 1D ladder chain structure. The five compounds' fluorescence properties and thermal stabilities were investigated. The compound 2 solution could fluorescence detection for iodide anion via fluorescence quenching.

Long-lived triplet charge-separated state in naphthalenediimide based donor-acceptor systems

1,4,5,8-Naphthalenediimides (NDIs) are widely used motifs to design multichromophoric architectures due to their ease of functionalisation, their high oxidative power and the stability of their radical anion. The NDI building block can be incorporated in supramolecular systems by either core or imide functionalization. We report on the charge-transfer dynamics of a series of electron donor-acceptor dyads consisting of a NDI chromophore with one or two donors linked at the axial, imide position. Photo-population of the core-centred π-π* state is followed by ultrafast electron transfer from the electron donor to the NDI. Due to a solvent dependent singlet-triplet equilibrium inherent to the NDI core, both singlet and triplet charge-separated states are populated. We demonstrate that long-lived charge separation in the triplet state can be achieved by controlling the mutual orientation of the donor-acceptor sub-units. By extending this study to a supramolecular NDI-based cage, we also show that the triplet charge-separation yield can be increased by tuning the environment.

Layer-by-Layer Naphthalenediimide/Zn Phosphonate Hybrid Films Grown from Aqueous Solutions by a Simple Deposition Technique

Hybrid thin films containing N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (PNDI) and zinc cations (PNDI/Zn films) were built on silicon and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates by a simple layer-by-layer deposition process. Silicon substrates primed with a layer of phosphonate groups were immersed alternately into zinc nitrate and PNDI aqueous solutions, yielding PNDI/Zn films containing up to 40 layers. ITO substrates, on the other hand, were used without priming, and the deposition sequence began with a PNDI layer. All film growth steps were conducted at room temperature, using aqueous solutions, thus assuring an environmentally clean process. The PNDI/Zn films were studied by X-ray reflectivity and grazing angle X-ray diffraction, using synchrotron radiation source. The films were constituted by crystallites, containing zinc phosphonate layers oriented nearly parallel to the substrate. PNDI/Zn films on ITO were reduced to stable free radicals, which were observed by UV-visible spectroscopy. Moreover, PNDI/Zn bulk materials with structural analogy with the films were produced.

Enhanced brightness and electron affinity of terrylenediimide with sulfone-bridged substituents on the bay region

Terrylenediimide with electron-withdrawing groups (TDI4SF) was synthesized by the attachment of sulfone substituents on the bay region of terrylenediimide. The electron-withdrawing sulfone groups enhance the electron affinity, reduce the LUMO level to -4.37 eV, and endow TDI with excellent anti-oxidation ability. With sulfone substituents, TDI4SF has a red-shifted emission maximum with a peak at 702 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yield.

Naphthalenediimides with Cyclic Oligochalcogenides in Their Core

Naphthalenediimides (NDIs) are privileged scaffolds par excellence, of use in functional systems from catalysts to ion channels, photosystems, sensors, ordered matter in all forms, tubes, knots, stacks, sheets, vesicles, and colored over the full visible range. Despite this extensively explored chemical space, there is still room to discover core-substituted NDIs with fundamentally new properties: NDIs with cyclic trisulfides (i.e., trisulfanes) in their core absorb at 668 nm, emit at 801 nm, and contract into disulfides (i.e., dithietes) upon irradiation at <475 nm. Intramolecular 1,5-chalcogen bonds account for record redshifts with trisulfides, ring-tension mediated chalcogen-bond-mediated cleavage for blueshifts to 492 nm upon ring contraction. Cyclic oligochalcogenides (COCs) in the NDI core open faster than strained dithiolanes as in asparagusic acid and are much better retained on thiol exchange affinity columns. This makes COC-NDIs attractive not only within the existing multifunctionality, particularly artificial photosystems, but also for thiol-mediated cellular uptake.

Halogen-Bonded Assemblies of Arylene Imides and Diimides: Insight from Electronic, Structural, and Computational Studies

Halogen-bonding interactions in electron-deficient π scaffolds have largely been underexplored. Herein, the halogen-bonding properties of arylene imide/diimide-based electron-deficient scaffolds were studied. The influence of scaffold size, from small (phthalimide) to moderately sized (pyromellitic diimide or naphthalenediimides) to large (perylenediimide), axial-group modification, and number of halo substituents on the halogen bonding and its self-assembly was probed in a set of nine compounds. The structural modification leads to tunable optical and redox properties. The first reduction potential E 1 / 2 1 ranges between -1.09 and -0.17 V (vs. SCE). Two of the compounds, that is, 6 and 9, have deep-lying LUMOs with values reaching -4.2 eV. Single crystals of all nine systems were obtained, which showed Br⋅⋅⋅O, Br⋅⋅⋅Br, or Br⋅⋅⋅π halogen-bonding interactions, and a few systems are capable of forming all three types. These interactions lead to halogen-bonded rings (up to 12-membered), which propagate to form stacked 1D, 2D, or corrugated sheets. A few outliers were also identified, for example, molecules that prefer C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonding over halogen bonding, or noncentrosymmetric rather than centrosymmetric organization. Computational studies based on Atoms in Molecules and Natural Bond Orbital analysis provided further insight into the halogen-bonding interactions. This study can lead to a predictive design tool-box to further explore related systems on surfaces reinforced by these weak directional forces.

Base-Assisted Imidization: A Synthetic Method for the Introduction of Bulky Imide Substituents to Control Packing and Optical Properties of Naphthalene and Perylene Imides

We report the direct imidization of naphthalene and perylene dicarboxylic anhydrides/esters with bulky ortho,ortho‐diaryl‐ and ortho,ortho‐dialkynylaniline derivatives. This imidization method uses n‐butyllithium as a strong base to increase the reactivity of bulky amine derivatives, proceeds under mild reaction conditions, requires only stoichiometric amounts of reactants and gives straightforward access to new sterically crowded rylene dicarboximides. Mechanistic investigations suggest an isoimide as intermediary product, which was converted to the corresponding imide upon addition of an aqueous base. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses reveal dimeric packing motifs for monoimides, while two‐side shielded bisimides crystallize in isolated molecules without close π–π‐interactions. Spectroscopic investigations disclose the influence of the bulky substituents on the optical properties in the solid state.

Consecutive Charging of a Perylene Bisimide Dye by Multistep Low-Energy Solar-Light-Induced Electron Transfer Towards H2 Evolution

A photocatalytic system containing a perylene bisimide (PBI) dye as a photosensitizer anchored to titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles through carboxyl groups was constructed. Under solar-light irradiation in the presence of sacrificial triethanolamine (TEOA) in neutral and basic conditions (pH 8.5), a reaction cascade is initiated in which the PBI molecule first absorbs green light, giving the formation of a stable radical anion (PBI.- ), which in a second step absorbs near-infrared light, forming a stable PBI dianion (PBI2- ). Finally, the dianion absorbs red light and injects an electron into the TiO2 nanoparticle that is coated with platinum co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rates (HERs) are as high as 1216 and 1022 μmol h-1  g-1 with simulated sunlight irradiation in neutral and basic conditions, respectively.

Diverse 1D chains supramolecular structures of N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)pyromellitic diimide and fluorescence iodide sensing

Three diverse supramolecular compounds, {[3-pmpmd]}_n(1), {H₂[3-pmpmd]·2NO₃^-}_n(2), {H₂[3-pmpmd]·2tbb}_n(3), (where 3-pmpmd was N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)pyromellitic diimide; tbb was tertiary butyl benzoic acid) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and X-ray single-crystal structure analysis. The co-crystal anions affect their structural diversity. Compound 1 is a 1D stairway chain structure by perpendicular π⋯π interactions of pyromellitic diimide and the neighboring pyridine rings. Compound 2 is a typical 1D ladder chain structure by hydrogen bond of nitrate arranged in a parallel array. Compound 3 is a 1D zigzag chain structure of one 3-pmpmd and two tbb by parallel π⋯π interactions and hydrogen bond interactions. Thermal stabilities and fluorescence properties of all compounds were investigated. The solution of compound 2 in DMF can fluorescence sense for iodide ions by remarkably quenching fluorescence intensity.

Perhalogenated Tetraazaperopyrenes and Their Corresponding Mono- and Dianions

Chlorination and bromination of 2,9-perfluoropropyl-substituted tetraazaperopyrenes (TAPPs) under forcing conditions resulted in fully core-halogenated TAPP derivatives, devoid of hydrogen atoms at the polycyclic aromatic core. The octahalogenation stabilized the reduced mono- and dianionic compounds sufficiently to allow for their characterization. The additional ortho-chlorination led to an improvement of the electron mobility compared to the bay-substituted tetrachloro-TAPP when employed as an n-channel semiconductor in thin-film transistors.

Molecular and Supramolecular Multiredox Systems

The design and synthesis of molecular and supramolecular multiredox systems have been summarized. These systems are of great importance as they can be employed in the next generation of materials for energy storage, energy transport, and solar fuel production. Nature provides guiding pathways and insights to judiciously incorporate and tune the various molecular and supramolecular design aspects that result in the formation of complex and efficient systems. In this review, we have classified molecular multiredox systems into organic and organic-inorganic hybrid systems. The organic multiredox systems are further classified into multielectron acceptors, multielectron donors and ambipolar molecules. Synthetic chemists have integrated different electron donating and electron withdrawing groups to realize these complex molecular systems. Further, we have reviewed supramolecular multiredox systems, redox-active host-guest recognition, including mechanically interlocked systems. Finally, the review provides a discussion on the diverse applications, e. g. in artificial photosynthesis, water splitting, dynamic random access memory, etc. that can be realized from these artificial molecular or supramolecular multiredox systems.
