Abstract
Objective: Asthma is a common chronic disease and a substantial public health problem for children, adolescents, and adults. Adolescence, a period of increased independence and striving for autonomy, is an opportune time for youth transitioning to adulthood to assume more responsibility for their own asthma self-management. However, accurate measures of adolescent asthma outcomes are limited. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify self-reported asthma measures currently available in the empirical literature focused on adolescent populations. Methods: Search terms were based on the National Library of Medical Subject Headings and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Databases searched included CINAHL, Nursing Allied Health Prevention, Medline, ProQuest, and PubMed. Included studies were peer reviewed and published in English between 2010 and 2022. All studies reported on asthma measures for adolescents between 10 and 19 years old. Results: Nineteen studies were included, comprising 15 experimental and 4 quasi-experimental. This review revealed the following asthma measure domains: asthma knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, self-care, self-regulation, symptom prevention and management, medication adherence, asthma disease control, symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) for evaluating psychosocial, behavioral, clinical, and QOL outcomes. Conclusion: This review revealed the necessity of developing a comprehensive measure to assess the asthma self-management behaviors of adolescents. A comprehensive tool related to adolescent asthma self-management behavior would enhance the assessment and evaluation of adolescent asthma self-management behaviors and extend the science and clinical practice around adolescent self-management. Present measures for asthma self-management behavior for adolescents are limited; therefore, developing a valid and reliable measure is necessary not only to assess adolescents' asthma self-management behavior outcomes but also to identify and evaluate the essential components to include in educational interventions for adolescent self-management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize adolescents' practical knowledge of asthma self-management and experiences during acute asthma episodes, and compare practical knowledge between minority and non-minority groups. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis using a qualitative descriptive design of textual data collected from 126 adolescents that participated in a randomized controlled trial of an asthma self-management program. Directed content analysis was conducted using four constructs of asthma self-management including symptom prevention, symptom monitoring, acute symptom management, and symptom communication. RESULTS Most of the adolescents knew how to prevent exercised-induced bronchoconstriction, but had limited understanding about how to assess and monitor the severity of acute symptoms, appropriately use bronchodilators, seek timely medical help, and communicate acute symptoms to caregivers or healthcare providers during a slow-onset and rapid-onset asthma attack. More minority participants monitored asthma using peak expiratory flow than non-minority participants, who often relied on symptom-based monitoring. Minority adolescents more frequently mentioned bronchodilator use to manage asthma attacks, while non-minority adolescents often reported use of complementary and alternative approaches. Minority youth mentioned accessing healthcare services for acute episodes more often than their non-minority counterparts. Minority participants mentioned communicating acute symptoms to their providers, or family members less frequently than non-minority youth. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents have insufficient practical knowledge about ways to prevent and manage acute asthma. Periodic assessment of learning needs related to asthma attacks should be considered a routine part of clinical visits for adolescents to provide targeted information support to address their identified needs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children and young people (CYP) with asthma can benefit from reduced exposure to indoor environmental allergens and triggers but may not consistently have avoidance strategies implemented. To inform future interventions to increase trigger and allergen avoidance and enhance asthma control, a greater understanding of the influences on avoidance behaviours is necessary. METHODS A systematic scoping review was selected to summarize evidence on what influences family uptake of indoor environmental asthma trigger avoidance strategies for CYP with asthma and identify research gaps. Primary studies of any design, including CYP (≤18 years) with asthma, and/or parent-carers, available in English and conducted since 1993, were eligible. Searches included nine databases, hand-searching reference lists and citation searching. FINDINGS Thirty-three articles were included and are summarized narratively due to heterogeneity. Influences appear complex and multifactorial and include barriers to strategy uptake, health beliefs and personal motivation. Research specifically related to family understanding of allergic sensitisation status and exposure risks, and how these may inform avoidance implementation is required. Patient and public involvement (PPI) was not reported in included articles, although two studies used participatory methods. CONCLUSION There is limited research on family asthma trigger management, particularly what influences current management behaviours. Variation in families' ability to identify important triggers, understand exposure risk and consistently reduce exposures warrants further exploratory research to explain how families reach avoidance decisions, and what future interventions should aim to address. Further PPI-informed research to address such gaps, could enable theory-based, person-centred interventions to improve the uptake of asthma trigger remediation. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION An asthma-specific PPI group contributed to the decision-making for the funding for the wider project this review sits within. The findings of this scoping review have informed the subsequent phases of the project, and this was discussed with PPI groups (both adult and CYP groups) when proposing the next phases of the project.

Abstract
Rural adolescents with asthma are a disparate group. Self-management is essential to asthma control. We describe asthma knowledge, self-efficacy, and self-management behaviors among 198 rural adolescents with poorly controlled asthma, exploring demographic differences; we also test the application of Social Cognitive Theory to asthma self-management examining if self-efficacy mediates associations between knowledge and self-management. Asthma knowledge and self-management were relatively poor in our sample, particularly among male and White adolescents; greater knowledge was significantly associated with better symptom prevention and management. Self-efficacy partially mediated the association between knowledge and symptom prevention, but not acute symptom management, suggesting that knowledge may not improve symptom prevention behaviors without confidence to implement such behaviors and that factors beyond knowledge and self-efficacy likely play a role in asthma self-management in this population. Addressing asthma knowledge and self-efficacy could improve self-management and, ultimately, enhance asthma control among rural adolescents with poorly controlled asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Youth with poorly-controlled asthma are at increased risk for sleep disturbances caused by nocturnal symptoms like coughing. Asthma-related sleep disturbances can have downstream consequences for youth with asthma and their families. This study aims to describe (1) sleep disturbances in adolescents with poorly-controlled asthma and their caregivers and (2) the relationship between sleep and asthma management. METHODS Adolescents with poorly-controlled asthma and their caregivers completed the Family Asthma Management System Scale (FAMSS), a semi-structured interview that assesses youth asthma management within the family context. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Two authors coded each transcript for sleep-related data in NVivo using descriptive content analysis. RESULTS Thirty-three adolescents ages 12-15 years old (M = 13.2, SD = 1.2) with poorly-controlled asthma and their caregivers participated in this study. Four main themes emerged: sleep difficulties, sleep environment, sleep and self-management, and fatigue and self-management. 42% of youth and caregivers reported worse nocturnal asthma symptoms (e.g. coughing) that caused frequent nighttime awakening. Approximately 27% of caregivers expressed distress over their child's nocturnal asthma and described their management strategies (e.g. co-sleeping, nighttime symptom monitoring). Adolescents described sleepiness as a barrier to asthma self-management tasks (e.g. medication adherence, response to exacerbation). CONCLUSION Interview responses demonstrated the considerable interrelationship of sleep and asthma management in adolescents with poorly-controlled asthma. Asthma providers should consider discussing sleep difficulties with their adolescent patients and their families. Addressing these difficulties may help adolescents improve their asthma self-management and help caregivers better cope with their child's disease.

Abstract
Pediatric asthma management in the U.S. is primarily oriented around caregivers. As evident in policy, clinical literature and provider practices, this caregiver-centric approach assumes unidirectional transfer of practices and knowledge within particular relational configurations of physicians, caregivers, and children. Reflecting broader societal values and hierarchies, children are positioned as passive recipients of care, as apprentices for future citizenship, and as the responsibility of parents who will train them in the knowledge and labor of asthma management. These ideas, though sometimes contradictory, contribute to a systemic marginalization of children as participants in their health care, leaving a conceptual gap regarding children's inclusion in chronic illness management: what children's roles in their health care are or should be. We address this conceptual gap by asking, what does pediatric asthma management look like when we center children, rather than caregivers in our lens? We draw data from a study of asthma management in St. Louis, Missouri, and Gainesville, Florida, which included 41 caregivers, 24 children, and 12 health-care providers. By asking children to show us how they manage asthma, we find that children actively co-construct health practices within broader interdependencies of care and the structural constraints of childhoods.

Abstract
THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES As technology use increasingly expands, the opportunity to capitalize on it for healthcare education, monitoring, and assessment has grown rapidly, especially among adolescent patients. As apps are developed, consideration should be given to self-management theory concepts. PHENOMENA ADDRESSED The proliferation of mobile health (mHealth) applications allows adolescents to access healthcare information in new, innovative ways. Many health applications focus on health promotion, fitness, and nutrition and others help persons with chronic disease. This article offers a compelling case for incorporating mHealth into teen healthcare by reviewing current data on teens' technology use, showing how mHealth aligns with self-management theory concepts, and offering a case scenario on mHealth-enhanced self-management care. RESEARCH LINKAGES The ability to combine accurate and immediate healthcare information with continual social support could radically improve teen's self-management behaviors, especially when mHealth apps use connectivity, a feedback loop, and concepts known to enhance self-management behaviors.

Abstract
Background The family is a key setting for health promotion. Contemporary health promoting family models can establish scaffolds for shaping health behaviors and can be useful tools for education and health promotion. Objectives The objective of this scoping review is to provide details as to how conceptual and theoretical models of the health promoting potential of the family are being used in health promotion contexts. Design Guided by PRISMA ScR guidelines, we used a three-step search strategy to find relevant papers. This included key-word searching electronic databases (Medline, PSycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL), searching the reference lists of included studies, and intentionally searching for grey literature (in textbooks, dissertations, thesis manuscripts and reports.) Results After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the overall search generated 113 included manuscripts/chapters with 118 unique models. Through our analysis of these models, three main themes were apparent: 1) ecological factors are central components to most models or conceptual frameworks; 2) models were attentive to cultural and other diversities, allowing room for a wide range of differences across family types, and for different and ever-expanding social norms and roles; and 3) the role of the child as a passive recipient of their health journey rather than as an active agent in promoting their own family health was highlighted as an important gap in many of the identified models. Conclusions This review contributes a synthesis of contemporary literature in this area and supports the priority of ecological frameworks and diversity of family contexts. It encourages researchers, practitioners and family stakeholders to recognize the value of the child as an active agent in shaping the health promoting potential of their family context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young adults (ages 18-44) have increased emergency department use for asthma and poor adherence to medications. The objective of this mixed-methods study was to understand experiences with and approaches to managing asthma, of which little is known in this age group. METHODS Surveys (Asthma Control Questionnaire, Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire) and 1:1 semi-structured interviews were used to explore experiences with asthma, symptoms, self-management behaviours, and relationship to asthma control and quality of life. Qualitative data were analysed using content analysis techniques. Descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations were used to examine distributive characteristics and associations between variables. RESULTS Forty urban adults participated (mean age 32.7 ± 6.2, 1σ). Coughing was reported nearly 46% more often than wheezing, with 42.5% (17/40) coughing until the point of vomiting most days. Most participants delayed using medication for symptoms due to misperceptions about inhalers. Higher symptom frequency and worse asthma control were associated with greater use of non-pharmacologic symptom management strategies (r = 0.645, P < .001; r = 0.360, P = .022, respectively). Five themes were identified regarding young adults experiences with asthma: (1) having asthma means being limited and missing out on life; (2) health care for asthma is burdensome, and other things are more important; (3) there is not enough personal benefit in medical interactions to make preventive care worthwhile; (4) there are insufficient support and education about asthma for adults; and (5) people normalize chronic symptoms over time and find ways of coping that fit with their lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Young adults may tolerate symptoms without using quick-relief medication or seeking preventive care. Increasing engagement with preventive services will require decreasing perceived burdens and increasing the personal benefits of care. Evaluating for non-pharmacologic approaches to managing symptoms and asthma-related coughing may identify uncontrolled asthma. Enhanced training for clinicians in patient-centric asthma care may be needed.

Abstract
Adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients need additional support, while they experience the challenges associated with their age. They need specific training to learn the knowledge and skills required to confidently self-manage their allergies and/or asthma. Transitional care is a complex process, which should address the psychological, medical, educational and vocational needs of AYA in the developmentally appropriate way. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has developed a clinical practice guideline to provide evidence-based recommendations for healthcare professionals to support the transitional care of AYA with allergy and/or asthma. This guideline was developed by a multidisciplinary working panel of experts and patient representatives based on two recent systematic reviews. It sets out a series of general recommendations on operating a clinical service for AYA, which include the following: (a) starting transition early (11-13 years), (b) using a structured, multidisciplinary approach, (c) ensuring AYA fully understand their condition and have resources they can access, (d) active monitoring of adherence and (e) discussing any implications for further education and work. Specific allergy and asthma transition recommendations include (a) simplifying medication regimes and using reminders; (b) focusing on areas where AYA are not confident and involving peers in training AYA patients; (c) identifying and managing psychological and socio-economic issues impacting disease control and quality of life; (d) enrolling the family in assisting AYA to undertake self-management; and (e) encouraging AYA to let their friends know about their allergies and asthma. These recommendations may need to be adapted to fit into national healthcare systems.

Managing Asthma and Obesity Related Symptoms (MATADORS): An mHealth Intervention to Facilitate Symptom Self-Management among Youth. Abstract
Youth with multi-morbidity (one or more chronic diseases) are at increased risk of further morbidity and early mortality as they enter their adult years. Recent increases in both asthma and obesity among youth have led to high health care utilization, increased health related complications, and expanded risks of subsequent cardiovascular disease burden. Common symptoms seen with asthma and obesity include fatigue, pain, depression, and anxiety. These symptoms can result in decreased physical activity, social isolation, and poor quality of life, which also may contribute to increased morbidity and mortality over time. Youth ages 10–17 are in a transitionary period where their overall health and disease management shifts from one of parental oversight to one where the youth gradually experience increased autonomy over their health and care management. Managing Asthma and Obesity Related Symptoms (MATADORS), is a mHealth technology-enhanced nurse-guided intervention that incorporates a novel mobile health application and motivational enhancement principles within a behavioral activation framework. Providing high-risk youth with strategies to enhance symptom self-management may result in decreased symptom prevalence, improved quality of life, and long-term reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as they move into adulthood. Moreover, developing low-cost, scalable tools with end-user input may facilitate promote early intervention and improved access to care, and reduce overall disease burden and healthcare costs.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to conduct a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies exploring the self-management experiences, attitudes and perspectives of children and young people (CYP) living with epilepsy. Five databases were systematically searched up to September 2019. Fourteen papers were included. One analytical theme: self-management strategies was generated informed by four descriptive themes; concealment; medicine adherence; self-monitoring of activities; and seeking social support. The synthesis identified that while CYP with epilepsy engage in specific self-management strategies, there is limited evidence in understanding self-management and the processes underlying the use of it. Future research examining self-management in childhood is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence represents a vulnerable time for individuals with asthma and allergic conditions. They suffer an unexpected degree of morbidity. This systematic review aimed to understand the challenges faced by adolescents and young adults with these conditions. METHODS A systematic literature search was undertaken across eight databases. References were checked by two reviewers for inclusion. Study data were extracted, and their quality was assessed in duplicate. A narrative meta-synthesis was undertaken. RESULTS A total of 108 papers describing 106 studies were retrieved, most focused on asthma. Five themes were identified across studies: (a) Health-related quality of life-impairment was associated with poor disease control, psychosocial issues, adolescent-onset allergic disease and female sex; (b) Psychological factors-asthma and food allergy were associated with anxiety and depression, atopic dermatitis was associated with suicidal ideation, and that parental emotional support may be protective; (c) Adherence-suboptimal adherence was associated with older age, barriers to medication usage, poor symptom perception and failure to take responsibility, and positive factors were routines, simpler treatment regimes, better knowledge and perceptions about medications; (d) Self-management-facilitated by education, knowledge and a positive attitude; and (e) Supportive relationships-families could modify barriers to adherence and foster positive views about self-management, adolescents suggested that their peers should be more involved in supporting them, and adolescents also wished to have support from nonjudgemental healthcare professionals. CONCLUSIONS We have some understanding of the challenges faced by adolescents with asthma, less so for other allergic conditions. This knowledge will be used to support guidelines for managing adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/S To create a consensus list of self-management definitions, recommendations, and endpoints for children and young people (0-20 years) with chronic conditions. METHODS This study used a Delphi technique. Based on the number of relevant peer-reviewed publications, clinical academics were invited to participate in three survey rounds. Round one contained open-ended and multiple-choice questions eliciting general opinions on self-management. For round two, results were provided to the interdisciplinary expert panel as statements for rating their agreement using a 7-point Likert scale, with consensus predefined as moderately or extremely satisfied by >70% of participants. Statements not meeting consensus were re-presented in round three, with group feedback incorporated. Finalised statements informed creation of the 'Partners in Health: Self-Management Consensus List for Children and Young People'. RESULTS Sixteen clinical academics participated: 12 completed round one; 14 completed round two; and 12 completed round three. Of 101 statements, 90 reached consensus, with statements separated into five developmentally appropriate groups. Statements covered broad self-management and self-management support domains including knowledge, involvement, monitoring/responding to symptoms, transition, impact, lifestyle, and support. Division of responsibility and autonomy were distinct themes. CONCLUSION AND PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This research provides consensus-based guidance for clinicians providing paediatric self-management support.

Abstract
Mind mapping is a visual-spatial method of representing information using nodes (information segments) to show ideas and connecting lines to define relationships between content. As a critical thinking tool, it is applicable to a range of research activities, including information management, project development, and data analysis. The purposes of this manuscript are to describe the use of mapping for qualitative data analysis, provide step-by-step instructions of how to construct mind maps, and present examples specific to qualitative data analysis. An example from a recent study of patient and provider perceptions of virtual visits demonstrates the use of Xmind in conjunction with Atlas.ti for qualitative content analysis of open-ended survey data. While coding in Atlas.ti, we used Xmind to develop dynamic memos, code networks, and themes. The memo map served to identify common coding patterns and informed subsequent coding stages. After coding in Atlas.ti, the entire code list was imported into a new map in Xmind and iteratively organized to identify conceptual groupings, similarities/differences, and key ideas. Themes were identified through pattern coding and refining code networks within the Xmind map. Map iterations formed part of the analytic trail and facilitated peer-to-peer discussions. The final map served as the model for publication. The use of mind mapping enhanced the rigor, credibility, and transparency of analyses and facilitated peer-to-peer communication. This technique can be used to manage diverse content (documents, audio/video file, image, web links, and personal notes) and thus has great potential to contribute to a variety of data management tasks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate symptom assessment remains challenging in teen populations. Little is known of usual symptom/response patterns, and self-reported paper diaries have traditionally low compliance rates. Therefore, we used concurrent digital voice diaries to capture daily asthma experiences. OBJECTIVE (a) To qualitatively explore usual symptom patterns and self-management responses and (b) to quantitatively explore relationships between symptom severity and sentiment scores (a marker of emotional response to events). METHODS Fourteen minority and nonminority teenagers (age 13-17) with controlled (50%) and uncontrolled asthma used digital recorders to report about their asthma once daily over 14 days. Dairy entries were coded for symptom frequency, severity, type, and self-management responses, while sentiment analysis was used to evaluate the emotional valence of diary entries and to explore whether increased symptom levels correlated with greater negative sentiment. RESULTS Symptom frequency and severity recorded in voice diaries were much higher than teens indicated at baseline and were discordant with clinical assessments of asthma control. Of 175 entries, teens had symptoms 69.1% of days (121/175) and severe symptoms on one-third of these. Atypical symptoms (coughing, throat clearing) were reported twice as often as traditional symptoms (wheezing, chest tightness) and often not recognized as asthma, but rather attributed to being "sick" (25.6% of symptom days). Teens frequently minimized symptoms, used rescue and controller medication inconsistently, and resorted to alternative strategies to manage symptoms. Sentiment was not significantly correlated with assessed control (β = 0.14, P = 0.28), but for teens reporting severe symptoms, sentiment scores decreased by 0.31 relative to teens without symptoms (P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Teens may minimize symptoms and have greater symptom frequency and severity than is recognized by themselves or providers. Screening for specific symptoms including coughing, throat clearing, and respiratory illness may be needed to identify those experiencing burden from asthma.
