Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia is a major global burden, and occupational gasoline exposure is a common occupational hazard factor. Although previous studies have shown that there is a potential relationship between occupational gasoline exposure and the increase of anemia prevalence, this relationship has not been fully explored. The current cohort study aimed to investigate the association between occupational exposure to gasoline and anemia, and the effect of gasoline concentration on hemoglobin (Hb) levels. METHODS This retrospective cohort study collected baseline data from 1451 workers, including 605 exposed to gasoline and 846 not exposed to gasoline. Participants were enrolled in 2013-2015, and follow-up in 2019. Anemia was diagnosed according to WHO guidelines on hemoglobin cutoffs to define anemia in individuals and populations. Occupational exposure concentration of gasoline was measured based on the Chinese national standard (GBZ-T300.62-2017). Logistic regression was conducted to analyze the associations of occupational exposure to gasoline and anemia. RESULTS The incidence of anemia among workers exposed to gasoline was significantly higher than that among non-exposed workers (relative risk [RR] = 11.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.45-12.53). The risks of anemia were significantly higher among participants exposed to gasoline concentrations ≥ 43.20 mg/m³ (RR = 13.92, 95%CI: 12.25-15.28), 18.01-43.19 mg/m³ (RR = 12.93, 95%CI: 11.07-14.51), and 0.01-18.00 mg/m³ (RR = 5.49, 95%CI: 3.96-7.32) compared with the control non-exposed group. The risk of anemia was significantly higher among exposed workers, after adjusting for all confounding factors. There was also a significant negative correlation between gasoline exposure concentration and hemoglobin level. CONCLUSIONS Occupational exposure to gasoline is associated with an increased incidence of anemia, with a positive correlation between occupational gasoline exposure levels and the severity of anemia. The incidence and severity of anemia increase while hemoglobin levels decrease in line with increasing gasoline exposure concentrations. These findings emphasize the importance of assessing anemia in workers exposed to gasoline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether the relationship between average glucose (AG) levels and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) differs across racial/ethnic groups. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We performed a prospective substudy of GRADE, a comparative effectiveness randomized trial conducted in 36 centers in the U.S. A total of 1,454 of the 5,047 participants in the GRADE cohort, including 534 non-Hispanic White (NHW), 389 non-Hispanic Black (NHB), and 327 Hispanic White patients and 204 patients of other racial/ethnic backgrounds, were included in the substudy. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) performed for 10 days was used to calculate AG10. Immediately after CGM, HbA1c and glycated albumin were measured. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glucose area under the curve (AUC) were derived from a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. RESULTS The relationship between AG10 and HbA1c was significantly different for NHB compared with NHW patients and those of other racial/ethnic groups. HbA1c levels were 0.2-0.6 percentage points higher in NHB than in NHW patients for AG10 levels from 100 to 250 mg/dL. For an HbA1c of 7%, AG10 was 11 mg/dL higher for NHW than for NHB patients. Similar findings were observed across races for relationships of FPG and AUC with HbA1c and for glucose measurements with glycated albumin levels. Differences in the relationship between AG10 and HbA1c across racial groups remained after adjustments for any demographic or other differences between racial/ethnic subgroups. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between several measures of glucose with HbA1c and glycated albumin consistently differed across races. These findings should be considered in setting treatment goals and diagnostic levels.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the association between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and severe maternal morbidity (SMM) during delivery and up to 1-year postpartum. METHODS In a retrospective cohort study across 3 states, we computed adjusted relative risks (aRR) for SMM comparing individuals with IDA versus those without, using modified Poisson regression models. RESULTS Among 2459,106 individuals, 10.3 % (n = 252,240) had IDA. Individuals with IDA experienced higher rates of blood transfusion and non-transfusion SMM (329 and 122 per 10,000 deliveries, respectively) than those without IDA (33 and 46 per 10,000 deliveries, respectively). The risk of blood transfusion (aRR: 8.2; 95 % CI 7.9-8.5) and non-transfusion SMM (aRR: 1.9; 95 % CI: 1.8-2.0) were higher among individuals with IDA. The attributable risk per 10,000 deliveries due to IDA for blood transfusion and non-transfusion SMM during delivery were 29.5 (95 % CI: 28.9-30.0) and 5.7 (95 % CI: 5.3-6.2), respectively. Within 1-year postpartum, the relative risk of non-transfusion SMM (aRR:1.3; 95 % CI: 1.2-1.3) was 30 % higher among individuals with IDA. CONCLUSION IDA is associated with increased SMM risk. Addressing IDA in pregnant individuals may reduce SMM rates.

Abstract
Background Although both anemia and schizophrenia (SCZ) can cause cognitive decline, it is unclear whether anemia worsens cognitive decline in patients with SCZ. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemia and the relationship between anemia, SCZ symptom severity, and cognitive function in patients with SCZ. Methods We obtained demographic and clinical data from 1690 inpatients with SCZ. All psychiatric symptoms and cognitive functioning were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Repeated Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Hemoglobin (HGB) values as well as red blood cell (RBC) counts were collected by routine blood tests. Results The proportion of anemia in patients with SCZ was 26.36 % (383/1453). Compared to SCZ patients without anemia, SCZ patients with anemia were older, had a lower bodyweight, a smaller waist circumference and lower apolipoprotein B levels, but longer QT intervals. Further logistic regression analysis revealed that anemia was associated with age, gender, and weight. In addition, there was no difference in cognitive function between SCZ patients with and without anemia. Conclusion Our findings suggest a high proportion of anemia in patients with chronic SCZ in the Han Chinese population. Several demographic and clinical variables are associated with anemia in SCZ patients.

Abstract
Background Nutritional anemia is highly prevalent and has triggered a globally recognized public health concern worldwide. Objective To better understand the prevalence of anemia and the state of nutritional health in developed countries to inform global nutritional health and better manage the disease. Method We employed the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)-2020 National Inpatient Health Care Data (NIS), administered by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Nutritional anemia was diagnosed according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). Matching analysis and multivariate regression were used to adjust for patient and hospital characteristics. Controls were obtained by stratifying and matching for age and sex. Results The 2020 HCUP-NIS database encompassed a survey over 6.4 million hospitalized patients, among which 1,745,350 patients diagnosed with anemia, representing approximately 26.97% of the hospitalized population, over 310,000 were diagnosed with nutritional anemia, and 13,150 patients were hospitalized for nutritional anemia as primary diagnosis. Hospitalization rate for nutritional anemia exhibited an increased age-dependent increase nationwide, especially among females, who displayed 1.87 times higher than males. Notably, in comparison to the control group, individuals of the Black race exhibit a higher prevalence of nutritional anemia (case group: 21.7%, control group: 13.0%, p < 0.001). In addition, hospitalization rates were higher among low-income populations, with lower rates of private insurance (case group: 18.7%, control group: 23.5%, p < 0.001) and higher rates of Medicaid insurance (case group: 15.4%, control group: 13.9%, p < 0.001). In areas characterized by larger urban centers and advanced economic conditions within the urban-rural distribution, there was an observed increase in the frequency of patient hospitalizations. Iron deficiency anemia emerged as the predominant subtype of nutritional anemia, accounting for 12,214 (92.88%). Secondary diagnosis among patients hospitalized for nutritional anemia revealed that a significant number faced concurrent major conditions like hypertension and renal failure. Conclusion In economically prosperous areas, greater attention should be given to the health of low-income individuals and the older adult. Our findings hold valuable insights for shaping targeted public health policies to effectively address the prevalence and consequences of nutritional anemia based on a overall population health.

Abstract
Dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) are common pollutants hazardous to human health. We applied 12 dioxins and DLCs data of 1851 participants (including 484 arthritis patients) from National Health Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2004 and quadrupled them into rank variables. Multivariate logistic regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to explore the relationship between individual or mixed exposure to the pollutants and arthritis after adjusting for multiple covariates. In multivariable logistic regression with an individual dioxin or DLC, almost every chemical was significantly positively associated with arthritis, except PCB66 (polychlorinated biphenyl 66) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran (hpcdf). The WQS model indicated that the combined exposure to the 12 dioxins and DLCs was positively linked to arthritis (OR: 1.884, 95% CI: 1.514-2.346), with PCB156 (weighted 0.281) making the greatest contribution. A positive trend between combined exposure and arthritis was observed in the BKMR model, with a posterior inclusion probability (PIP) of 0.987 for PCB156, which was also higher than the other contaminants.

Abstract
Purpose The incidence of distal radius fractures (DRFs) in the United States is more than 640,000 cases per year and is projected to increase. The overall prevalence of anemia in the United States increased from 5.71% in 2005 to 6.86% in 2018. Therefore, preoperative anemia may be an important risk factor to consider before surgical fixation of a distal radius fracture. The purpose of this study was to investigate preoperative anemia and its association with short-term complications after surgical treatment of DRFs. Methods The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all patients who underwent open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of DRFs between 2015 and 2020. The initial pool of patients was divided into cohorts based on preoperative hematocrit. Multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for all significantly associated patient demographics and comorbidities, was used to identify associations between preoperative anemia and postoperative complications after ORIF of DRFs. Results A total of 22,923 patients who underwent ORIF of DRFs were identified in National Surgical Quality Improvement Program from 2015 to 2020. Of the 12,068 patients remaining after exclusion criteria, 9,616 (79.7%) patients were included in the normal cohort, 2,238 (18.5%) patients were included in the mild anemia cohort, and 214 (1.8%) patients were included in the severe anemia cohort. Compared with the reference cohort, patients with any anemia were independently associated with higher rates of reintubation (odds ratio [OR], 6.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.29-32.80; P = .023), blood transfusion (OR, 11.83; 95% CI, 3.95-35.45; P < .001), septic shock (OR, 10.76; 95% CI, 1.19-97.02; P = .034), readmission (OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.60-2.76; P < .001), nonhome discharge (OR, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.84-2.68; P < .001), and mortality (OR, 2.70; 1.03-7.07; P = .043). Conclusions Preoperative anemia, both mild and severe, were clinically significant predictors for postoperative complications within 30-day after ORIF of DRFs. Abstract
Aims and Objectives Periodontitis is a chronic disease affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and exhibits bidirectional relation with systemic diseases. This study aims to determine the association between chronic periodontitis and erythrocyte functional measures: total red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) by systematic review and meta-analysis. Materials and Methods A systematic search of the electronic databases PUBMED, OVID, Embase, Web on Science, and Google Scholar was undertaken from inception to July 2022. English language studies that evaluated the erythrocyte functional measures in periodontitis and health were selected. Other review reports, letters/opinion articles, studies without a definition of periodontitis, and the concomitant presence of systemic conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) were excluded. Two reviewers determined full-text eligibility in a blinded process. Meta-Essentials software was used to generate forest plots and to determine heterogeneity and publication bias. Results Twenty-six studies involving 1082 patients with chronic periodontitis and 980 healthy controls were analyzed. Pooled results showed lower Hb concentration (Hedges' g = -1.16; 95% confidence intervals [CI], -1.7 to -0.62), RBC counts (Hedges' g = -0.85; 95% CI, -1.31 to -0.38) and packed cell volume (-0.56; 95% CI, -1.02 to -0.11) in patients with chronic periodontitis. Conclusion This meta-analysis showed a decreasing trend in the hematological parameters, including hemoglobin concentration, number of erythrocytes, and hematocrit in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls.
