Abstract
The objective was to determine if whole milk intake or total milk intake behaviors are associated with body weight (weight) and related parameters in adults. We hypothesize that whole milk intake would be inversely associated with body weight measures. Whole milk (including flavored whole milk) intake was assessed using 24-hour dietary recall data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2018 for adults age 20+ years (N = 43,038). Weight and related parameters were measured, and history of self-reported weights and total milk intake were obtained from questionnaire data. The association of whole milk intake with weight was assessed via regression after adjusting for demographic and lifestyle-related covariates. The average body mass index (BMI) was about 29 kg/m2 and weight was 76 to 89 kg. About 66% of the population were overweight or obese. Average whole milk intake among consumers was 1.0 to 1.4 cups eq/d. Whole milk intake was inversely associated (P < .05) with weight, BMI, waist circumference, and the prevalence of obesity. Whole milk intake was also inversely associated (P < .01) with trying to lose weight in the past year. In most cases, milk intake behavior at ages 5 to 12, 13 to 17, or 18 to 35 years was not associated with BMI. The results indicate that whole milk intake was inversely associated with weight, BMI, and prevalence of obesity, and these findings may provide additional evidence to support dietary recommendations for whole milk.

Abstract
It has long been debated whether or not dairy consumption increases the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). This link has been assessed by a large number of case-control studies, prospective cohort studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. The majority of their studies demonstrated an inverse relationship between the risk of T2D and dairy consumption. It is yet unclear how dairy products specifically contribute to metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. However, a surprising number of studies have indicated either no association or a positive correlation between the development of type 2 diabetes and certain dairy products. The objective of this narrative review is to collate research findings from diverse geographical contexts, exploring the impact of dairy product consumption on the incidence and risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D). This review includes studies that addressed this research issue and were released between the years 2000 and 2023. This will help the public draw logical inferences and validate the body of recent research. To shed light on this matter, the writers conduct a comprehensive search of electronic scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Thus, this review emphasizes the connection between the usage of different dairy products and the risk of T2D. After controlling for confounding variables, this review indicates that the relationship between the incidence of type 2 diabetes and consumption of dairy products is context-dependent. In conclusion, not all dairy products help to prevent type 2 diabetes. There is no association between most other dairy products and T2D, while in some cases benefits of yogurt and other low-fat dairy products have been reported.

Abstract
Background The effect of tea consumption on conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity has attracted significant global interest. However, the results of various studies on this topic have been mixed and somewhat contentious. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationships between tea consumption and the aforementioned health conditions. Methods A bidirectional two-sample MR analysis was used to systematically explores the associations between tea consumption and hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. MR-Egger regression, weighted median, inverse variance weighted, and weighted mode methods were used to evaluate the potential causal associations. Leave-one-out sensitivity test was used to check the robustness of the IVW estimates. Results MR analysis indicated that genetically predicted tea consumption is associated with a protective effect against hypertension, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.78 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from 0.64 to 0.95. Additionally, tea consumption appeared to have a potential protective effect on type 2 diabetes and obesity related to excessive calorie intake, influenced by specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), namely "rs57462170" and "rs17685." No causal link was observed between the consumption of green or herbal tea and hypertension, diabetes, or obesity. However, there was a marginal negative association between type 2 diabetes and tea consumption and (OR = 0.99; 95% CI: 0.97-1.00) and a significant negative correlation between obesity due to excessive calorie intake and green tea consumption (OR = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.16-0.78). Conclusion This study demonstrates a protective causal relationship between the consumption of tea (including black and green teas) and reduced risk of hypertension. Furthermore, our results suggest that tea intake may also have a protective effect on type 2 diabetes and obesity. The results recommend further research to verify or refine these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are pathologies that affect millions of people worldwide. They have no effective therapy and are difficult to prevent and control when they develop. It has been known for many years that these diseases have many pathogenic aspects in common. We highlight in this review that neuroglial cells (astroglia, oligodendroglia, and microglia) play a vital role in the origin, clinical-pathological development, and course of brain neurodegeneration. Moreover, we include the new results of a T2D-AD mouse model (APP+PS1 mice on a high-calorie diet) that we are investigating. METHODS Critical bibliographic revision and biochemical neuropathological study of neuroglia in a T2D-AD model. RESULTS T2D and AD are not only "connected" by producing complex pathologies in the same individual (obesity, T2D, and AD), but they also have many common pathogenic mechanisms. These include insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation (both peripheral and central-or neuroinflammation). Cognitive impairment and AD are the maximum exponents of brain neurodegeneration in these pathological processes. both due to the dysfunctions induced by metabolic changes in peripheral tissues and inadequate neurotoxic responses to changes in the brain. In this review, we first analyze the common pathogenic mechanisms of obesity, T2D, and AD (and/or cerebral vascular dementia) that induce transcendental changes and responses in neuroglia. The relationships between T2D and AD discussed mainly focus on neuroglial responses. Next, we present neuroglial changes within their neuropathological context in diverse scenarios: (a) aging involution and neurodegenerative disorders, (b) human obesity and diabetes and obesity/diabetes models, (c) human AD and in AD models, and (d) human AD-T2D and AD-T2D models. An important part of the data presented comes from our own studies on humans and experimental models over the past few years. In the T2D-AD section, we included the results of a T2D-AD mouse model (APP+PS1 mice on a high-calorie diet) that we investigated, which showed that neuroglial dysfunctions (astrocytosis and microgliosis) manifest before the appearance of amyloid neuropathology, and that the amyloid pathology is greater than that presented by mice fed a normal, non-high-caloric diet A broad review is finally included on pharmacological, cellular, genic, and non-pharmacological (especially diet and lifestyle) neuroglial-related treatments, as well as clinical trials in a comparative way between T2D and AD. These neuroglial treatments need to be included in the multimodal/integral treatments of T2D and AD to achieve greater therapeutic efficacy in many millions of patients. CONCLUSIONS Neuroglial alterations (especially in astroglia and microglia, cornerstones of neuroinflammation) are markedly defining brain neurodegeneration in T2D and A, although there are some not significant differences between each of the studied pathologies. Neuroglial therapies are a very important and p. promising tool that are being developed to prevent and/or treat brain dysfunction in T2D-AD. The need for further research in two very different directions is evident: (a) characterization of the phenotypic changes of astrocytes and microglial cells in each region of the brain and in each phase of development of each isolated and associated pathology (single-cell studies are mandatory) to better understand the pathologies and define new therapeutic targets; (b) studying new therapeutic avenues to normalize the function of neuroglial cells (preventing neurotoxic responses and/or reversing them) in these pathologies, as well as the phenotypic characteristics in each moment of the course and place of the neurodegenerative process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between dairy intake and prevalence or incidence of hypertension remains controversial. We aimed to investigate the association between intake of different dairy products and prevalence and incidence of hypertension in a community-dwelling sample. METHODS Three cross-sectional studies (2009-12, 2014-17 and 2018-21) and one prospective study (2009-12 to 2018-21) were conducted in Lausanne, Switzerland. Dietary intake was assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dairy consumption was compared between participants with and without prevalent or incident hypertension. RESULTS For the cross-sectional analyses, data from 4437 (2009-12, 54.0% women, 57.7 ± 10.5 years), 2925 (2014-17, 53.4% women, 62.5 ± 10.0 years), and 2144 (2018-21; 53.3% women, 65.5 ± 9.6 years) participants were used. No consistent differences between participants with and without hypertension were found for all dairy products (total dairy, milk, yogurt, cheese, low-fat dairy, and full-fat dairy) although participants with hypertension tended to consume less cheese (51 ± 1 vs. 55 ± 1, p = 0.014, 52 ± 1 vs. 56 ± 1, p = 0.053, and 54 ± 1 vs. 56 ± 1 g/day for 2009-12, 2014-17 and 2018-21, respectively). For the prospective study, data from 2303 participants (60.8% women, 53.9 ± 9.0 years) were used. Irrespective of the dairy product considered, no association was found between quartiles of dairy consumption and development of hypertension. Similar findings were obtained after stratifying on dietary quality. CONCLUSION In this population-based study, no association was found between the consumption of different dairy products and the prevalence or incidence of hypertension.

Abstract
This study aims to explore the link between dietary habits and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), including preterm birth (PB), preeclampsia (PE), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), fetal growth restriction (FGR), and spontaneous abortion (SA) through two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). We accessed publicly available genome-wide association studies' (GWAS) summary statistics for dietary habits and APOs, respectively. We used five MR methods to synthesize MR estimates across genetic instruments. To ensure the robustness of our results, we assessed heterogeneity, and horizontal pleiotropy, and conducted sensitivity analyses. The primary analysis showed that intake of dried fruit (odds ratio (OR), 0.522; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.291-0.935) and fresh fruit (OR, 0.487; 95% CI: 0.247-0.960) was related to a decreased risk of PB. While intake of tea (OR, 1.602; 95% CI: 1.069-2.403) and poultry (OR, 6.314; 95% CI: 1.266-31.488) was linked to a heightened risk of PB. Cheese intake was a protective factor against PE (OR, 0.557; 95% CI: 0.337-0.920) and GDM (OR, 0.391; 95% CI: 0.270-0.565). Intake of lamb/mutton had a negative relationship with PE (OR, 0.372; 95%CI: 0.145-0.954), whereas oily fish consumption showed a positive relationship with FGR (OR, 2.005; 95% CI: 1.205-3.339). However, after correction using the false discovery rate (FDR) analysis, only the intake of cheese showed a significant causal relationship with GDM (p < .001). Our study preliminarily found that cheese intake was significantly associated with the lower risk of GDM, while others were suggestively associated with the risk of APOs. Well-designed prospective studies are still needed to confirm our findings in the future.

Abstract
Aim: We hypothesized that milk, yogurt, and cheese have differential impacts on energy expenditure (EE) and obesity in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Methods: C57BL/6 mice (n = 16 per group) were fed a HFD or a HFD supplemented with fat-free milk (MILK), fat-free plain yogurt (YOG), or reduced-fat cheddar cheese (CHE; 19 kcal% fat), each provided at 10% of the daily energy intake, for 8 weeks. EE was quantified using a metabolic chamber. Metabolic pathways related to BAT mitochondrial function and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) abundance were assessed. Serum lipidomic profiles were analyzed to identify potential mediators of the observed effects. Results: MILK supplementation lowered weight gain and fat accumulation and enhanced EE and BAT thermogenesis, perhaps via the SIRT1-AMPK-PGC1α axis in BAT. This led to elevated UCP1 abundance and enhanced the abundance of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL). MILK also altered serum lipid species, indicating enhanced energy use, and promoted BAT thermogenesis and mitochondrial function pathways. YOG exhibited a similar pattern but a lower magnitude of effects than MILK on reducing weight gain and fat mass, increasing EE, and BAT thermogenic proteins, including AMPK-PGC1α-UCP1. Both MILK and YOG showed a relative increase in serum PC 15:0_15:0 and LPC 15:0. In contrast, CHE reduced weight gain and increased EE without impacting BAT thermogenesis proteins or serum lipid species. Conclusion: Our study showed that MILK, YOG, and CHE reduced weight gain in mice on a HFD by increasing EE. MILK and YOG also up-regulated BAT thermogenesis, while both additionally altered lipids involved in fat metabolism and inflammation. CHE did not affect BAT thermogenesis and lipid species compared to HFD.

Abstract
The world, in 2024, faces both climate and biodiversity crises, and the food system does contribute significantly to these crises. For some, the solution is simple - intakes of animal source foods (ASFs) should be considerably reduced, and consumption of plant-source foods (PSFs) should be greatly increased. Advocates for such a dietary transformation express confidence that plant-based diets will not only benefit planetary health, but will provide nutrient adequacy for all, and will also result in considerable protection from chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, as described in this perspective, the dramatic reductions in ASFs, entailed by many plant-based diets, will worsen already prevalent micronutrient and protein deficiencies. The protections provided by plant-based diets against NCDs appear to be more strongly associated with reduced intakes of calories and salt, and increased intakes of fruit, vegetables, nuts and whole grains, rather than with reduced intakes of ASFs. Any possible absolute adverse effects of red and processed meat consumption on NCDs are very small and uncertain. Other ASFs either appear to have no impact on NCDs (poultry meat and eggs), or are associated with protections against obesity, cardiovascular events, brain disorders and some cancers (seafood and dairy). Rigorous randomized controlled trials of all newly proposed environmentally-protective plant-based diets are required, so as to provide clear-cut evidence of micronutrient and protein adequacy, with or without, supplementation, fortification and/or biofortification. In the meantime, dietary guidelines should advise moderating excessive consumption, rather than substantially limiting or excluding ASFs from the human diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations between data-driven dietary patterns, immune function, and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the mediating effects of immune function. METHODS This study included 375,665 participants without diabetes at baseline in the UK Biobank study. Dietary patterns were derived through principal component analysis of food frequency questionnaire data. Immune function was assessed using 14 individual inflammatory markers and an integrated low-grade inflammation score (INFLA-score). Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the associations of dietary patterns or immune function with incident T2D. Linear regressions were used to estimate the associations of dietary patterns with immune function. Mediating effects of immune function were quantified. RESULTS During a median 14.6-year follow-up, 13,932 participants developed T2D. Four dietary patterns were identified: prudent diet (high in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish), wheat/dairy/eggs restrictive diet (limiting these foods), meat-based diet (high in red/processed meat, salt), and full-cream dairy diet (preference for full cream milk or dairy products). The prudent diet was negatively (HRQ4 vs Q1, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.65-0.72]), while the wheat/dairy/eggs restrictive diet (HRQ4 vs Q1, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.03-1.13]), meat-based diet (HRQ4 vs Q1, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.06-1.17]), and full-cream dairy diet (HRQ4 vs Q1, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.03-1.12]) were positively associated with incident T2D (all p for trend ≤0.04). The prudent diet was negatively and the full-cream dairy diet was positively associated with most inflammatory markers. Most inflammatory markers, especially INFLA-score (HR, 1.18 [95% CI, 1.16-1.20]), were positively associated with incident T2D. INFLA-score mediated 13% of the association with incident T2D for the prudent diet and 34% for the full-cream dairy diet. CONCLUSIONS This study identified four distinct dietary patterns and a range of inflammatory markers associated with incident T2D. A notable proportion of the associations between dietary patterns and T2D was mediated by immune function.

Abstract
Obesity disrupts glucose metabolism, leading to insulin resistance (IR) and cardiometabolic diseases. Consumption of cow's milk and other dairy products may influence glucose metabolism. Within the complex matrix of cow's milk, various carbohydrates, lipids, and peptides act as bioactive molecules to alter human metabolism. Here, we summarize data from human studies and rodent experiments illustrating how these bioactive molecules regulate insulin and glucose homeostasis, supplemented with in vitro studies of the mechanisms behind their effects. Bioactive carbohydrates, including lactose, galactose, and oligosaccharides, generally reduce hyperglycemia, possibly by preventing gut microbiota dysbiosis. Milk-derived lipids of the milk fat globular membrane improve activation of insulin signaling pathways in animal trials but seem to have little impact on glycemia in human studies. However, other lipids produced by ruminants, including polar lipids, odd-chain, trans-, and branched-chain fatty acids, produce neutral or contradictory effects on glucose metabolism. Bioactive peptides derived from whey and casein may exert their effects both directly through their insulinotropic effects or renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibition and indirectly by the regulation of incretin hormones. Overall, the results bolster many observational studies in humans and suggest that cow's milk intake reduces the risk of, and can perhaps be used in treating, metabolic disorders. However, the mechanisms of action for most bioactive compounds in milk are still largely undiscovered.

Abstract
Serving size may be the appropriate reference for calculating food nutritional value. We aimed to assess the nutritional values of Japanese foods based on serving sizes rather than per 100 g by adapting the Meiji Nutritional Profiling System (Meiji NPS). Given the variability in serving sizes across countries, we used Japanese serving sizes to calculate the Meiji NPS scores. We confirmed the convergent validity of the Meiji NPS scores per serving size with the Nutrient-Rich Food Index 9.3 using Spearman's correlation coefficients (r = 0.51, p < 0.001). Food groups recommended by official guidelines, such as pulses, nuts and seeds, fish and seafood, fruits, vegetables, and milk and milk products, scored relatively high. Furthermore, the nutrient density scores of food items with small serving sizes, such as mushrooms, algae, seasonings, and fats and oils, were moderated when calculated by per serving size, despite having considerably higher or lower scores per 100 g. These results indicate that calculating NPS per serving size allows for the assessment of the nutritional value of food items in accordance with actual consumption quantities. Therefore, the Meiji NPS calculated per serving size, alongside the per 100 g version, may be useful for dietary management depending on specific purposes.

Abstract
Current studies have presented conflicting findings regarding the associations between light at night (LAN) exposure and the risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Our study systematically summarized the evidence of the association between LAN exposure and the risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. We searched five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane) for observational studies published up to 1 August 2023. The pooled odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by random-effects models for the association. Eighteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with the group with the lowest level of LAN, the group with the highest level of LAN is associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (pooled OR = 1.19, 95%CI: 1.13-1.26), hypertension (pooled OR: 1.86, 95% CI:1.28-2.72), and diabetes (pooled OR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.07-1.31). Our meta-analysis demonstrated LAN exposure is associated with increased risk of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.

Abstract
Exploring the intricate crosstalk between dietary prebiotics and the specific intestinal microbiome (SIM) is intriguing in explaining the mechanisms of current successful dietary interventions, including the Mediterranean diet and high-fiber diet. This knowledge forms a robust basis for developing a new natural food therapy. The SIM diet can be measured and evaluated to establish a reliable basis for the management of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), obesity, and metabolic cardiovascular disease. This review aims to delve into the existing body of research to shed light on the promising developments of possible dietary prebiotics in this field and explore the implications for clinical practice. The exciting part is the crosstalk of diet, microbiota, and gut-organ interactions facilitated by producing short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and subsequent metabolite production. These metabolic-related microorganisms include Butyricicoccus, Akkermansia, and Phascolarctobacterium. The SIM diet, rather than supplementation, holds the promise of significant health consequences via the prolonged reaction with the gut microbiome. Most importantly, the literature consistently reports no adverse effects, providing a strong foundation for the safety of this dietary therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies have elucidated the associations between dietary factors and hypertension. Nevertheless, the exploration of these relationships using Mendelian randomization remains scarce currently. METHODS The Mendelian randomization approach investigated the potential causal relationships between 16 dietary factors and hypertension. To achieve this, we identified genetic variants associated with these dietary factors by utilizing data from European-descent genome-wide association studies with a stringent significance threshold (P < 5 × 10 - 8). Subsequently, we obtained genetic associations with hypertension from the extensive FinnGen Study, encompassing 92,462 cases and 265,626 controls. Our primary analytical method was the inverse variance weighted method, and we also conducted assessments for heterogeneity and pleiotropy to ensure the robustness and reliability of our findings. RESULTS The study revealed significant associations with hypertension risk for various dietary factors. Specifically, higher weekly alcohol consumption (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.19-1.96) and more frequent alcohol intake (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.08-1.33) were positively correlated with an increased risk of hypertension. Likewise, increased poultry intake (OR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.83-5.78) and beef intake (OR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.09-2.97) were also linked to a higher risk of hypertension. Conversely, there were protective factors associated with a decreased risk of hypertension. These included consuming salad and raw vegetables, dried fruits, cheese, and cereals. It is important to note that no evidence of pleiotropy was detected, underscoring the robustness of these findings. CONCLUSIONS This study uncovered causal relationships between various dietary factors and hypertension risk. Specifically, alcohol consumption in terms of drinks per week and intake frequency, as well as poultry and beef intake, were causally associated with an elevated risk of hypertension. In contrast, consuming salad/raw vegetables, dried fruits, cheese, and cereals demonstrated an inverse causal association with hypertension, suggesting a potential protective effect.

Abstract
Bovine dairy milk is a nutrient-rich matrix, but consumption of full-fat dairy food varieties has been claimed historically to be associated with poorer cardiometabolic health, a notion often attributed to the saturated fat content. However, continued investigation that includes observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide evidence that favorably supports full-fat dairy foods and their bioactive components on cardiometabolic health. This review addresses this controversy by examining the evidence surrounding full-fat dairy foods and their implications for human health. Dairy foods are heterogeneous, not just in their fat content but also in other compositional aspects within and between fermented (e.g., yogurt, cheese) and nonfermented products (e.g., milk) that could differentially influence cardiometabolic health. Drawing from complementary lines of evidence from epidemiological studies and RCTs, this review describes the health effects of dairy foods regarding their fat content, as well as their polar lipids that are concentrated in the milk fat globule fraction. Observational studies have limitedly supported the consumption of full-fat dairy to protect against cardiometabolic disorders. However, this framework has been disputed by RCTs indicating that dairy foods, regardless of their fat content or fermentation, are not detrimental to cardiometabolic health and may instead alleviate certain cardiometabolic risk factors. As dietary recommendations evolve, which currently indicate to avoid full-fat dairy foods, it is essential to consider the totality of evidence, especially from RCTs, while also recognizing that investigation is needed to evaluate the complexity of dairy foods within diverse dietary patterns and their impacts on cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
Dietary sphingomyelin (SM) has been reported to favorably modulate postprandial lipemia. Mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk markers are not fully elucidated. Rodent studies showed that tritiated SM was hydrolyzed in the intestinal lumen into ceramides (Cer) and further to sphingosine (SPH) and fatty acids (FA) that were absorbed by the intestine. Our objective was to investigate the uptake and metabolism of SPH and/or tricosanoic acid (C23:0), the main FA of milk SM, as well as lipid secretion in Caco-2/TC7 cells cultured on semipermeable inserts. Mixed micelles (MM) consisting of different digested lipids and taurocholate were prepared without or with SPH, SPH and C23:0 (SPH+C23:0), or C23:0. Triglycerides (TG) were quantified in the basolateral medium, and sphingolipids were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. TG secretion increased 11-fold in all MM-incubated cells compared with lipid-free medium. Apical supply of SPH-enriched MM led to increased concentrations of total Cer in cells, and coaddition of C23:0 in SPH-enriched MM led to a preferential increase of C23:0 Cer and C23:0 SM. Complementary experiments using deuterated SPH demonstrated that SPH-d9 was partly converted to sphingosine-1-phosphate-d9, Cer-d9, and SM-d9 within cells incubated with SPH-enriched MM. A few Cer-d9 (2% of added SPH-d9) was recovered in the basolateral medium of (MM+SPH)-incubated cells, especially C23:0 Cer-d9 in (MM+SPH+C23:0)-enriched cells. In conclusion, present results indicate that MM enriched with (SPH+C23:0), such as found in postprandial micelles formed after milk SM ingestion, directly impacts sphingolipid endogenous metabolism in enterocytes, resulting in the secretion of TG-rich particles enriched with C23:0 Cer.

Abstract
Growing research has highlighted that the consumption of dairy products improves the metabolic health in obese individuals by functioning as regulatory modulators. However, the molecular basis of this effect remains largely unknown. Herein, we report a dairy-derived peptide, which we named Miltin, that activates the thermogenesis of brown adipocytes and increases white adipocyte browning. Previously, Miltin was merely identified for its antioxidant capacity, although it is commonly present in different dairy products. In this study, we revealed the effect of Miltin in modulating adipose thermogenesis and further explored its potential in treating obesity through in vivo and in vitro strategies. The administration of Miltin in mice fed with a high-fat diet resulted in enhanced thermogenesis, improved glucose homeostasis, and reduced body mass and lipid accumulation, indicating the anti-obesity effect of Miltin. Genomic analysis revealed that Miltin modulates thermogenesis by inducing the activation of the MAPK signaling pathway by preferentially interacting with GADD45γ to promote its stability. Together, our findings indicate that Miltin's role in initiating the thermogenesis of adipocytes makes it a potential anti-obesity therapy for future development.

Abstract
Dairy products may affect hypertension (HTN) risk. The aim of this study was to examine the association between fermented and nonfermented dairy foods and HTN in a sample of premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) subjects. This cross-sectional study was performed on 1854 PCAD patients. A 110-item food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intakes. HTN was considered if systolic blood pressure was 140 mmHg and higher and/or diastolic blood pressure was 90 mmHg and higher. The odds ratio of HTN across the quartiles of different types of dairy products was evaluated by binary logistic regression. The mean (SD) of dairy products consumption was 339.8 (223.5) g/day, of which 285.4 g/day was fermented dairy products. In the crude model, participants in the fourth quartile of fermented dairy products had lesser risk of HTN compared to the bottom quartile (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.96; p for trend = .058). However, after considering the possible confounders, the significance disappeared. Subjects in the top quartile of high-fat fermented dairy products had 34% lower risk for HTN compared to the bottom quartile (95% CI: 0.49, 0.88; p for trend < .001). Adjustment for potential risk factors weakened the association but remained significant (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.53, 1.01; p for trend = .001). Nonsignificant relation was detected between low-fat fermented, low-fat nonfermented, and high-fat nonfermented dairy products and HTN. Moderate consumption of high-fat fermented dairy products, in a population with low consumption of dairy foods, might relate to reduced likelihood of HTN.

Abstract
Substitution models in epidemiologic studies specifying both substitute and substituted food in relation to disease risk may be useful to inform dietary guidelines. A systematic review of prospective observational studies was performed to quantify the risks of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes (T2D) associated with the substitution of dairy products with other foods and between different dairy products. We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science until 28th June, 2023. We calculated summary relative risks (SRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) in random-effects meta-analyses. We assessed the risk of bias with the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Exposure (ROBINS-E) tool and certainty of evidence (CoE) using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Fifteen studies (with 34 publications) were included. There was moderate CoE that the substitution of low-fat dairy with red meat was associated with a higher risk of mortality, coronary artery disease, and T2D [SRR (95% CI): 1.11 (1.06, 1.16), 1.13 (1.08, 1.18), and 1.20 (1.16, 1.25)]. A higher risk of mortality and T2D was also observed when substituting low-fat dairy with processed meat [SRR (95% CI): 1.19 (1.11, 1.28) and 1.41 (1.33, 1.49); moderate CoE]. A lower mortality risk was associated with the substitution of dairy and yogurt with whole grains [SRR (95% CI): 0.89 (0.84, 0.93) and 0.91 (0.85, 0.97)], and butter with olive oil [SRR (95% CI): 0.94 (0.92, 0.97); all moderate CoE]. Mainly no associations were observed when substituting dairy products against each other on disease and mortality risk. Our findings indicate associations between substituting dairy with red or processed meat and higher disease risk, whereas its substitution with whole grains was associated with a lower risk. However, there is little robust evidence that substituting whole-fat with low-fat dairy is associated with disease risk. (CRD42022303198).

Abstract
Diabetes is a non-communicable chronic, but preventable, disease whose occurrence is related to unhealthy lifestyles, including inadequate diet. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes. In Argentina, 12.7% of the population is living with diabetes. In this work, we aimed at giving a perspective on the role of yogurt, as part of a healthy lifestyle, for the prevention and management of obesity and diabetes. The intake of yogurt declined in the last decade in Argentina. In the context of the global diet, the contribution of a moderate increase of yogurt consumption has the potential to improve up to 10% the nutritional density of the Argentine population's diet, given its present low diversity and wide gaps in nutritive foods. The consumption of yogurt can be beneficial in the prevention and management of obesity and T2DM. The ready availability of yogurt and its easy introduction to diverse diets suggests that educating the general public to incorporate this fermented milk as part of a healthy diet may potentially contribute to improved public health through prevention of NCDs and the costs associated with them.

Abstract
The adult life stage encompasses a range of new experiences, opportunities, and responsibilities that impact health and well-being. During this life stage, health disparities continue to increase for Black Americans, with Black adults having a disproportionate burden of obesity, chronic diseases, comorbidities, and worse treatment outcomes compared to their White peers. While many of the underlying factors for these disparities can be linked to longstanding sociopolitical factors such as systemic racism, food insecurity, and poor access to healthcare, there are also several modifiable risk factors that are known to significantly impact health outcomes, such as improving diet quality, increasing physical activity, and not smoking. Of all the modifiable risk factors known to impact health, improving dietary habits is the factor most consistently associated with better outcomes for body weight and chronic disease. Of the major food groups recommended by the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) for achieving healthier dietary patterns, dairy foods have a nutrient profile which matches most closely to what Black Americans are inadequately consuming (e.g., vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium). However, Black adults tend to consume less than half the recommended daily servings of dairy foods, in part, due to issues with lactose intolerance, making higher intake of dairy foods an ideal target for improving diet quality and health in this population. This review examines the current body of evidence exploring the links between dairy intake, obesity, cardiometabolic disease risk, chronic kidney disease, and the most common types of cancer, with a special focus on health and disparities among Black adults. Overall, the evidence from most systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses published in the last decade on dairy intake and health outcomes has been conducted on White populations and largely excluded research on Black populations. The findings from this extensive body of research indicate that when teamed with an energy-restricted diet, meeting or exceeding the DGA recommended 3 daily servings of dairy foods is associated with better body weight and composition outcomes and lower rates of most common chronic diseases than lower intake (<2 servings per day). In addition to the number of daily servings consumed, the specific types (e.g., milk, yogurt, cheese) and subtypes (e.g., low-fat, fermented, fortified) consumed have also been shown to play major roles in how these foods impact health. For example, higher intake of fermented dairy foods (e.g., yogurt) and vitamin D fortified dairy products appear to have the most protective effects for reducing chronic disease risk. Along with lactose-free milk and cheese, yogurt is also generally low in lactose, making it an excellent option for individuals with lactose intolerance, who are trying to meet the DGA recommendations for dairy food intake.

Abstract
Background Observational studies link lifestyle factors to diabetes, but confounding limits causal inference. This study employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the potential causal effects of major dietary, obesity, smoking, and physical activity exposures on diabetes risk. Methods A two-sample MR framework integrated FinnGen and United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) data. Genetic instruments for diet (fruits, vegetables, cheese), smoking (initiation, intensity, maternal), body mass index (BMI), and physical activity came from various consortia (n=64, 949-632, 802). Associations with diabetes odds were assessed using inverse-variance weighted analysis. Results Fruit and cheese intake and physical activity per standard deviation increase causally reduced diabetes risk in both cohorts. Conversely, smoking initiation, maternal smoking around birth, and BMI per standard deviation increase causally increased diabetes risk in both cohorts. Coffee increased diabetes risk only in FinnGen, whereas smoking intensity increased diabetes risk only in UKB. Conclusion This study provides robust evidence that modifiable lifestyle factors may have causal effects on diabetes risk. Fruit, cheese, and physical activity may protect against diabetes, whereas smoking, maternal smoking, and higher BMI appear to increase risk. Findings support public health interventions targeting diet, physical activity, smoking cessation, and healthy weight to combat the global diabetes epidemic.

Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a food active component with blood-pressure-improving properties. However, the association between the variety and quantity of different sources of dietary CoQ10 and new-onset hypertension remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the associations between the diversity and quantity of CoQ10 intake from eight major food sources and new-onset hypertension risk. A total of 11,489 participants were included. Dietary intake was evaluated via three consecutive 24 h recalls and household food inventory. The diversity score of CoQ10 sources was calculated by the sum of food groups consumed in the ideal range. Cox proportional hazard models were used for evaluating their associations with hypertension. Model performance was assessed by ROC analyses and 200-times ten-fold cross-validation. The relationships between CoQ10 and hypertension were U-shaped for meat, egg, vegetable, and fruit sources, inverse J-shaped for fish, and nut sources, and L-shaped for dairy products sources (all p-values < 0.001). A higher diversity score was associated with lower hypertension risk (HR (95% CI): 0.66 (0.64, 0.69)). The mean areas under the ROC curves for 6, 12 and 18 years were 0.81, 0.80 and 0.78, respectively. There is a negative correlation between the diversity of CoQ10 with moderate intake from different sources and new-onset hypertension. One diversity score based on CoQ10 was developed.

Abstract
This study introduces the Meiji Nutritional Profiling System (Meiji NPS), which was specifically designed to respond to age-related shifts in nutrient requirements among Japanese adults (<65 years old) and older adults (≥65 years old). Japan has one of the most aged societies in the world. The health issues of interest are malnutrition and lifestyle-related diseases among adults and frailty among older adults. Two versions of the NPS were developed based on nutrients to encourage (protein, dietary fibers, calcium, iron, and vitamin D), food groups to encourage (fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and dairy), and nutrients to limit (energy, saturated fatty acids, sugars, and salt equivalents). The Meiji NPS for older adults did not include iron or saturated fatty acids. The algorithms were based on the Nutrient-Rich Foods Index (NRF). The convergent validity between the Meiji NPS and the existing NPSs for the same foods was confirmed using Spearman's correlation coefficients (NRF: r = 0.67 for adults and r = 0.60 for older adults; Health Star Rating: r = 0.64 for adults and r = 0.61 for older adults). The Meiji NPS may be useful for nutritional evaluation and reformulation of food products, tailored to adults and older adults to ameliorate health issues in Japan.

Abstract
Mediterranean diet includes fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese. These foods provide calcium, phosphorus, fat, carbohydrates and protein, all nutrients influencing various systems including bone, cardiovascular system, intermediary metabolism, cancer, central nervous system, and inflammation. In addition, they contain prebiotics and provide probiotics which are capable of modifiying microbiota composition and metabolism, potentially acting also indirectly on the various systems. A large body of evidence indicates that fermented dairy products consumption significantly contributes to the beneficial effects of a Mediterranean diet on various systems' health.

Abstract
Introduction Introduction: dairy products have long been recommended as part of a healthy eating plan, but there is a controversial opinion about whether or not they should be included in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Objective: the aim of this study was to know if there is an association between the intake of total dairy and dairy subgroups and the chance of having T2D, and the status of markers of glucose metabolism. Methods: three hundred and forty-two adult subjects participated in the study. A validated food-frequency questionnaire was applied to establish the dairy intake. Clinical-pathological and anthropometric variables (height, weight, waist circumference and serum concentrations of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c], high sensitive C-reactive protein [hs-CRP], tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNFα], interleukin [IL] 6 and IL-10) were measured. Consumption tertiles were calculated for each dairy subgroup. Correlation coefficients, multiple linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to assess the relation between dairy product consumption and markers of glucose metabolism. Results: a negative correlation was observed between the consumption of fermented dairy products and IL-10 (r = -0.27, p = 0.0206). Fermented dairy products were inversely associated with blood glucose, and HbA1c. Total dairy intake was positively associated with a lower chance of having diabetes in tertiles 2 and 3 of consumption, in relation to the reference tertile, adjusted for age, smoking habit, and alcohol intake, body mass index (BMI) and dietary variables. Conclusions: with this study, we broaden our understanding of the role of dairy intake in diabetes risk. However, more long-term studies are needed to confirm the associations and explore different confounding factors.

Abstract
Many recent very influential reports, including those from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Risk Factor Collaborators, the EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health, and the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, have recommended dramatic reductions or total exclusion of animal-source foods, particularly ruminant products (red meat and dairy), from the human diet. They strongly suggest that these dietary shifts will not only benefit planetary health but also human health. However, as detailed in this perspective, there are grounds for considerable concern in regard to the quality and transparency of the input data, the validity of the assumptions, and the appropriateness of the statistical modelling, used in the calculation of the global health estimates, which underpin the claimed human health benefits. The lessor bioavailability of protein and key micronutrients from plant-source foods versus animal-source foods was not adequately recognised nor addressed in any of these reports. Furthermore, assessments of bias and certainty were either limited or absent. Despite many of these errors and limitations being publically acknowledged by the GBD and the EAT-Lancet authors, no corrections have been applied to the published papers. As a consequence, these reports continue to erroneously influence food policy decisions and international dietary guidelines, such as the World Wildlife Fund's Livewell Diet, and the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023.

Abstract
Background and aims: Previous studies of primarily Western populations have consistently documented a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among people with a higher yogurt intake, but an inconsistent association with milk intake. However, little is known about the association between dairy intake and risk of T2D among Chinese adults who consume considerably less dairy (mainly milk and yogurt) compared with Western populations. The aim is to investigate the associations of dairy intake with the risk of incident T2D in the general adult population in China. Methods: This cohort study consisted of 22 843 participants without prevalent cardiovascular disease, cancer, or diabetes at the baseline. Dietary data were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire at the baseline (2013-2018); dairy intake was categorized into tertiles after zero consumers were taken as the reference. Incident T2D was ascertained by medical examinations and self-report of physician-diagnosed diabetes during follow-up visits. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: In total, 735 incident T2D cases were recorded over a median follow-up of 4.0 years. Relative to zero consumers, the HRs (95% CIs) for incident T2D among participants in the highest tertiles were 0.70 (0.57, 0.87) for total dairy, 0.73 (0.60, 0.90) for milk, and 0.81 (0.66, 1.00) for yogurt. Such associations were slightly attenuated by additional adjustment for the body mass index. In addition, such inverse associations were robust in sensitivity analyses and consistent in most of the subgroups defined by baseline characteristics. Conclusion: Higher intakes of total dairy, milk, and yogurt were all associated with a lower risk of T2D among Chinese adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review of recent observational studies and understanding of the complex nature of dairy foods is intended to reappraise the effects of different types of dairy foods on cardiovascular disease (CVD). RECENT FINDINGS Recent guidelines from major cardiovascular societies suggest that apart from the adverse effect of butter, consumption of more complex dairy products notably fermented varieties and yogurt in particular, appear to be inversely associated with outcomes of CVD and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Reduced fat in dairy food remains preferred for people at increased CVD risk. Changed evidence has led to new advice regarding consumption of some dairy foods. The apparent beneficial effects of fermented milk products, particularly yogurt, allow for increased consumption of nutritious staple foods. Recent national guidelines reflect this view.

Abstract
This umbrella review aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of current evidence from prospective studies on the diverse health effects of cheese consumption. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library to identify meta-analyses/pooled analyses of prospective studies examining the association between cheese consumption and major health outcomes from inception to August 31, 2022. We reanalyzed and updated previous meta-analyses and performed de novo meta-analyses with recently published prospective studies, where appropriate. We calculated the summary effect size, 95% prediction confidence intervals, between-study heterogeneity, small-study effects, and excess significance bias for each health outcome. We identified 54 eligible articles of meta-analyses/pooled analyses. After adding newly published original articles, we performed 35 updated meta-analyses and 4 de novo meta-analyses. Together with 8 previous meta-analyses, we finally included 47 unique health outcomes. Cheese consumption was inversely associated with all-cause mortality (highest compared with lowest category: RR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.92, 0.99), cardiovascular mortality (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.99), incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.96), coronary heart disease (CHD) (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.98), stroke (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.98), estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) breast cancer (RR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.82, 0.97), type 2 diabetes (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.98), total fracture (RR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.95), and dementia (RR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.99). Null associations were found for other outcomes. According to the NutriGrade scoring system, moderate quality of evidence was observed for inverse associations of cheese consumption with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, incident CVD, CHD, and stroke, and for null associations with cancer mortality, incident hypertension, and prostate cancer. Our findings suggest that cheese consumption has neutral to moderate benefits for human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current research aimed to evaluate the relationship between fruit, vegetable (FV), and dairy consumption with the odds of developing hypertension based on nationwide Stepwise approach to surveillance (STEPS) data in Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional study was accomplished by the research center of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Tehran. In total, 29,378 individuals' data were analyzed. Participants were classified into normal, elevated BP, stage I, and stage II hypertension according to systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) examinations. Based on the STEPS questionnaire, the consumption of FVs and dairy products was evaluated. Multinomial logistic regression was applied to assess the relationship between the consumption of FVs and dairy products with hypertension. RESULTS The findings revealed that only fruit consumption (≥ 2 servings/day) was negatively related to stage I hypertension (odds ratio (OR) = 0.81; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69-0.95) in two servings per day and OR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.68-0.96 in > two servings per day) in the adjusted model. There was no significant relationship between consuming vegetables and dairy products with elevated BP and hypertension. CONCLUSION Our study showed that increasing fruit consumption was related to reducing hypertension odds. Regarding the consumption of dairy products and vegetables, no significant relationship was found with the odds of hypertension. More studies, especially cohorts, are needed to evaluate the impacts of FV and dairy products on the risk of hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is unclear whether regular consumption of dairy products is associated with the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Thus, we conducted a systematic review followed by a meta-analysis of studies reporting on the association of dairy consumption with NAFLD risk. METHODS AND RESULTS We comprehensively searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for observational studies that evaluated the association between dairy intake and NAFLD likelihood that were published before September 1, 2022. The reported odds ratios (ORs) of fully adjusted models and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using a random-effects model for the meta-analysis. Out of 1206 articles retrieved, 11 observational studies, including 43,649 participants and 11,020 cases, were included. Pooled OR indicated a significant association between dairy intake and NAFLD (OR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.98; I2 = 67.8%, n = 11). Pooled ORs revealed that milk (OR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.95; I2 = 65.7%, n = 6), yogurt (OR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.82; I2 = 0.0%, n = 4), and high-fat dairy (OR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.19, 0.75; I2 = 0.0%, n = 5) consumption was inversely associated with NAFLD while cheese was not linked to NAFLD risk. CONCLUSION We observed that consumption of dairy products is linked to a reduced risk of developing NAFLD. Overall, the data in the source articles is of low to moderate quality; therefore, further observational studies are required to support the current findings (PROSPERO Reg. number: CRD42022319028).

Abstract
The health effects of dairy products are still a matter of scientific debate owing to inconsistent findings across trials. Therefore, this systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to compare the effects of different dairy products on markers of cardiometabolic health. A systematic search was conducted in 3 electronic databases [MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science; search date: 23 September 2022]. This study included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a ≥12-wk intervention comparing any 2 of the eligible interventions [e.g., high dairy (≥3 servings/d or equal amount in grams per day), full-fat dairy, low-fat dairy, naturally fermented milk products, and low dairy/control (0-2 servings/d or usual diet)]. A pairwise meta-analysis and NMA using random-effects model was performed in the frequentist framework for 10 outcomes [body weight, BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and systolic blood pressure]. Continuous outcome data were pooled using mean differences (MDs) and dairy interventions ranked using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve. Nineteen RCTs with 1427 participants were included. High-dairy intake (irrespective of fat content) showed no detrimental effects on anthropometric outcomes, blood lipids, and blood pressure. Both low-fat and full-fat dairy improved systolic blood pressure (MD: -5.22 to -7.60 mm Hg; low certainty) but, concomitantly, may impair glycemic control (fasting glucose-MD: 0.31-0.43 mmol/L; glycated hemoglobin-MD: 0.37%-0.47%). Full-fat dairy may increase HDL cholesterol compared with a control diet (MD: 0.26 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.49 mmol/L). Yogurt improved waist circumference (MD: -3.47 cm; 95% CI: -6.92, -0.02 cm; low certainty), triglycerides (MD: -0.38 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.73, -0.03 mmol/L; low certainty), and HDL cholesterol (MD: 0.19 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.00, 0.38 mmol/L) compared with milk. In conclusion, our findings indicate that there is little robust evidence that a higher dairy intake has detrimental effects on markers of cardiometabolic health. Abstract
Patients on renal replacement therapy are typically subject to several dietary restrictions; however, this approach has been questioned in recent years, with some suggesting that the Mediterranean diet might be beneficial. Data on the adherence to this diet and factors that influence it are scarce. We conducted a web survey among individuals on renal replacement therapy (dialysis or kidney transplant, KT) using the MEDI-LITE questionnaire to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet and dietary habits in this population. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was generally low, and significantly lower among participants on dialysis versus KT recipients (19.4% vs. 44.7%, p < 0.001). Being on dialysis, adopting fluid restrictions, and having a basic level of education were predictors of low adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Consumption of foods typically included in the Mediterranean diet, including fruit, legumes, fish, and vegetables, was generally low, particularly among those on dialysis. There is a need for strategies to improve both the adherence to and the quality of the diet among individuals on renal replacement therapy. This should be a shared responsibility between registered dietitians, physicians, and the patient.
