Abstract
Glyphosate (GLY) is a widely used herbicide with potential adverse effects on public health. However, the current epidemiological evidence is limited. This study aimed to investigate the potential associations between exposure to GLY and multiple health outcomes. The data on urine GLY concentration and nine health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, chronic kidney disease (CKD), hepatic steatosis, cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and neurodegenerative diseases (NGDs), were extracted from NHANES (2013-2016). The associations between GLY exposure and each health outcome were estimated using reverse-scale Cox regression and logistic regression. Furthermore, mediation analysis was conducted to identify potential mediators in the significant associations. The dose-response relationships between GLY exposure with health outcomes and potential mediators were analyzed using restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. The findings of the study revealed that individuals with higher urinary concentrations of GLY had a higher likelihood of having T2DM, hypertension, CVD and obesity (p < 0.001, p = 0.005, p < 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively). In the reverse-scale Cox regression, a notable association was solely discerned between exposure to GLY and the risk of T2DM (adjusted HR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.36). Consistent outcomes were also obtained via logistic regression analysis, wherein the adjusted OR and 95% CI for T2DM were determined to be 1.30 (1.12, 1.52). Moreover, the present investigation identified serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) as a mediator in this association, with a mediating effect of 7.14% (p = 0.040). This mediating effect was further substantiated by RCS regression, wherein significant dose-response associations were observed between GLY exposure and an increased risk of T2DM (p = 0.002) and reduced levels of HDL (p = 0.001). Collectively, these findings imply an association between GLY exposure and an increased risk of T2DM in the general adult population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary polyphenols, including flavan-3-ols (F3O), are associated with better health outcomes. The relationship of plasma phenyl-γ-valerolactones (PVLs), the products of colonic bacterial metabolism of F3O, with dietary intakes is unclear. OBJECTIVES To investigate whether plasma PVLs are associated with self-reported intakes of total F3O and procyanidins+(epi)catechins. DESIGN We measured 9 PVLs by uHPLC-MS-MS in plasma from adults (>60y) in the Trinity-Ulster-Department of Agriculture (TUDA study (2008 to 2012; n=5186) and a follow-up subset (2014 to 2018) with corresponding dietary data (n=557). Dietary (poly)phenols collected by FFQ were analyzed using Phenol-Explorer. RESULTS Mean (95% confidence interval [CI]) intakes were estimated as 2283 (2213, 2352) mg/d for total (poly)phenols, 674 (648, 701) for total F3O, and 152 (146, 158) for procyanidins+(epi)catechins. Two PVL metabolites were detected in plasma from the majority of participants, 5-(hydroxyphenyl)-γ-VL-sulfate (PVL1) and 5-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-γ-VL-3'-glucuronide (PVL2). The 7 other PVLs were detectable only in 1-32% of samples. Self-reported intakes (mg/d) of F3O (r = 0.113, P = 0.017) and procyanidin+(epi)catechin (r = 0.122, P = 0.010) showed statistically significant correlations with the sum of PVL1 and PVL 2 (PVL1+2). With increasing intake quartiles (Q1-Q4), mean (95% CI) PVL1+2 increased; from 28.3 (20.8, 35.9) nmol/L in Q1 to 45.2 (37.2, 53.2) nmol/L in Q4; P = 0.025, for dietary F3O, and from 27.4 (19.1, 35.8) nmol/L in Q1 to 46.5 (38.2, 54.9) nmol/L in Q4; P = 0.020, for procyanidins+(epi)catechins. CONCLUSIONS Of 9 PVL metabolites investigated, 2 were detected in most samples and were weakly associated with intakes of total F3O and procyanidins+(epi)catechins. Future controlled feeding studies are required to validate plasma PVLs as biomarkers of these dietary polyphenols.

Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for analyzing bivariate positive data, taking into account a covariate vector and left-censored observations, by introducing a hierarchical Bayesian analysis. The proposed method assumes marginal Weibull distributions and employs either a usual Weibull likelihood or Weibull-Tobit likelihood approaches. A latent variable or frailty is included in the model to capture the possible correlation between the bivariate responses for the same sampling unit. The posterior summaries of interest are obtained through Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, we apply it to a bivariate data set from stellar astronomy that includes left-censored observations and covariates. Our results indicate that the new bivariate model approach, which incorporates the latent factor to capture the potential dependence between the two responses of interest, produces accurate inference results. We also compare the two models using the different likelihood approaches (Weibull or Weibull-Tobit likelihoods) in the application. Overall, our findings suggest that the proposed hierarchical Bayesian analysis is a promising approach for analyzing bivariate positive data with left-censored observations and covariate information.

Abstract
Few studies have focused on environmental cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) exposure while exploring the effect of smoking on blood Cd (BCd) and blood Pb (BPb) levels. Moreover, essential trace elements affect the absorption, accumulation, and toxicity of Cd and Pb. To investigate the effect of smoking on BCd and BPb levels under high Cd and Pb exposure and the influence of essential trace elements on the effect, 301 residents living near a mining and smelting area in Northwest China were included in our study. After collecting health information and measuring BCd, BPb, serum iron, magnesium, and total calcium levels, we analyzed the association between smoking and BCd and BPb levels and the influence of the essential trace elements on the association. The results showed that BCd and BPb levels in smokers were significantly higher than those in non-smokers. There was a dose-response association between pack-years and the odds ratios (ORs) of high BCd and BPb levels in all participants compared with non-smokers. Serum iron, magnesium, and calcium had a negative effect on the elevations of the ORs of high BCd and BPb levels. In addition, smoking-related elevations of BCd and BPb levels vary by sex, age, BMI, and age of smoking initiation. Our findings present evidence for the effect of smoking on BCd and BPb levels under high Cd and Pb exposure and may provide guidance for the prevention and control of BCd and BPb elevations in residents living in Cd- and Pb-polluted areas.

Abstract
Phenols and parabens widely exist in personal care and consumer products and have been proved to be endocrine disrupting chemicals that could disturb bone metabolism. The current studies focusing on the associations between phenols and parabens with bone mineral density (BMD) drew contradictory conclusions. Considering the bias might be due to not considering the effects of mixed exposure, we conducted the first cross-sectional study to investigate the associations of both single and mixed metabolites of phenols and parabens with BMD in three populations by setting up four models: generalized linear regression model (GLM), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model, quantile g-computation (qgcomp) model and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model, based on the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. We found that the association between the mixtures and total femur BMD in men was significantly negative. Bisphenol A (BPA) was shown to play the most important role in this negative association in the BKMR model, and this negative association was also confirmed in the GLM model with β coefficient (95% CI) being -0.02 (-0.04, -0.01). The relationships between the mixtures and femoral neck and trochanter BMD in postmenopausal women were significantly positive. Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) played the most significant role in the positive association with trochanter BMD, as confirmed by the WQS, qgcomp and BKMR models, and this positive association was also verified by the GLM model with β coefficient (95% CI) being 0.01 (0.00, 0.02). In conclusion, the association between the mixed phenols and parabens and BMD was negative in men while was positive in postmenopausal women, which was gender-specific. This study might provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and the control of personal care and consumer products containing phenols and parabens in the future.

Abstract
Data from human and animal studies are highly suggestive of an influence of time of day of vaccine administration on host immune responses. In this population-based study, we aimed to investigate the effect of time of day of administration of a COVID-19 vector vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AstraZeneca), on SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike S1 immunoglobulin (IgG) levels. Participants were 803 university employees who received their first vaccine dose in March 2021, had serology data at baseline and at 3 weeks, and were seronegative at baseline. Antibody levels were determined in binding antibody units (BAU/mL) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Generalized additive models (GAM) and linear regression were used to evaluate the association of time of day of vaccination continuously and in hourly bins with antibody levels at 3 weeks. Participants had a mean age of 42 years (SD: 12; range: 21-74) and 60% were female. Time of day of vaccination was associated non-linearly ("reverse J-shape") with antibody levels. Morning vaccination was associated with the highest (9:00-10:00 h: mean 292.1 BAU/mL; SD: 262.1), early afternoon vaccination with the lowest (12:00-13:00 h: mean 217.3 BAU/mL; SD: 153.6), and late afternoon vaccination with intermediate (14:00-15:00 h: mean 280.7 BAU/mL; SD: 262.4) antibody levels. Antibody levels induced by 12:00-13:00 h vaccination (but not other time intervals) were significantly lower compared to 9:00-10:00 h vaccination after adjusting for potential confounders (beta coefficient = -75.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -131.3, -20.4). Our findings show that time of day of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has an impact on the magnitude of IgG antibody levels at 3 weeks. Whether this difference persists after booster vaccine doses and whether it influences the level of protection against COVID-19 needs further evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of autoimmunity in the U.S. has increased recently for undetermined reasons. Little is known about associations between autoimmunity and environmental causes. OBJECTIVES In a large representative sample of the U.S. population, we expanded our prior exploratory study of how exposures to selected xenobiotics and dioxin-like (DL) mixtures relate to antinuclear antibodies (ANA), the most common biomarker of autoimmunity. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data on 12,058 participants aged ≥ 12 years from three time periods of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1988 and 2012, of whom 14% were ANA-positive. We used lognormal regression models and censored-data methods to estimate ANA associations with xenobiotic concentrations overall and in sex, age, and race/ethnicity subgroups. Our analyses adjusted for potential confounders and appropriately handled concentrations below detection limits. RESULTS Observed ANA associations were positive for most DL compounds and nonDL polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), negative for most phthalates, and mixed for other xenobiotic classes. After correcting for multiple comparisons, some associations remained statistically significant. In subgroup analyses, the most significant finding was a positive ANA association with N-acetyl-S-(2-hydroxy-3-butenyl)-L-cysteine (MHB2) in males, followed by positive associations with 2,2',3,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 44), 2,2',4,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 49), and 2,2',3,4',5',6-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 149) in 12-19 year-olds, and with 3,4,4',5-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 81), 2,2',3,3',4,4',5,5',6-nonachlorobiphenyl (PCB 206), and N-acetyl-S-(phenyl)-L-cysteine (PMA) in Mexican Americans. Negative associations were found with mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) in 20-49 year-olds and mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) in 12-19 year-olds. In overall analyses, combining stratum-specific results across race/ethnicity strata revealed a positive ANA association with PCB 81 and a negative ANA association with N-acetyl-S-(2-hydroxyethyl)-L-cysteine (HEMA). DISCUSSION This study identified potential associations between ANA and various xenobiotics. Further investigation to confirm these observations and elucidate effects of certain xenobiotics on immune regulation could have important mechanistic, preventive, and treatment implications for a variety of immune-mediated disorders.

Abstract
The limit of detection (LOD) is commonly encountered in observational studies when one or more covariate values fall outside the measuring ranges. Although the complete-case (CC) approach is widely employed in the presence of missing values, it could result in biased estimations or even become inapplicable in small sample studies. On the other hand, approaches such as the missing indicator (MDI) approach are attractive alternatives as they preserve sample sizes. This paper compares the effectiveness of different alternatives to the CC approach under different LOD settings with a survival outcome. These alternatives include substitution methods, multiple imputation (MI) methods, MDI approaches, and MDI-embedded MI approaches. We found that the MDI approach outperformed its competitors regarding bias and mean squared error in small sample sizes through extensive simulation.

Abstract
The characterization of the effects of solar UVR on a broad set of circulating markers in systemic immunity and inflammation may provide insight into the mechanisms responsible for the UVR associations observed for several benign and malignant diseases. We examined the associations between exposure to solar UVR and circulating levels of 78 markers among 1,819 individuals aged 55–74 years who participated in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial using multiplex assays. Solar UVR was derived by linking the geocoded locations of 10 screening centers across the continental United States and the date of blood draw to the National Solar Radiation Database from 1993 to 2005. We assessed associations between ambient solar UVR and dichotomized marker levels using adjusted weighted logistic regression models and applied a 5% false discovery rate criterion to P-values. UVR exposure was associated (P < 0.05) with 9 of the 78 markers. CCL27, CCL4, FGF2, GM-CSF, IFN-γ, soluble IL4R, IL-7, and IL-11 levels were lower with increasing UVR tertile, with adjusted ORs ranging from 0.66 to 0.80, and the significant association for CCL27 withstood multiple comparison correction. In contrast, CRP levels were elevated with increasing UVR. Solar UVR was associated with alterations in systemic immune and inflammation marker levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations are a marker of ovarian reserve and are indicative of a woman's reproductive lifespan. Exposure to tobacco smoke has been associated with lower AMH concentrations; however, less is known about the association between ambient air pollution and ovarian reserve. METHODS For 883 premenopausal Sister Study participants recruited between 2003 and 2009 in the United States, adult residential annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were estimated using validated universal kriging models incorporating land-use regression. We estimated the distance in meters to the nearest major road for both adult enrollment and childhood residences. Serum AMH was measured using an ultrasensitive ELISA assay. Samples with AMH concentrations below the detection limit were analyzed using a picoAMH ELISA assay. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression was used to estimate the percent change in AMH in relation to ambient residential air pollution, categorized in quartiles and per interquartile range increase, and distance to a major roadway. RESULTS Overall, we observed little to no evidence of associations between AMH and air pollution concentrations or proximity to roadways. Women in the highest quartile of NO2 exposure, a traffic-related pollutant, had higher estimated AMH concentrations (Q4 vs. Q1, 42.9%; 95% CI = -3.4, 111.4) compared with the lowest quartile. However, lower mean AMH concentrations were observed for women living closer to a major roadway (<50 m to nearest roadway vs. ≥200 m = -32.9%; 95% CI = -56.1, 2.6). CONCLUSIONS We saw little consistent evidence to support an association between outdoor air pollution and diminished ovarian reserve in US women ages 35-54.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a previous exploratory study, we reported lower concentrations of the ovarian reserve biomarker anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in adulthood with prenatal farm exposure. We now examine this association as well as childhood farm exposure using enrollment data from the Sister Study, a large US cohort of women. METHODS We collected prenatal and childhood farm exposure data by questionnaire and telephone interview. However, serum AMH data were available only for a nested subset: premenopausal women ages 35-54 subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer (n = 418 cases) and their matched controls (n = 866). To avoid potential bias from restricting analyses to only premenopausal controls, we leveraged the available cohort data. We used data from both premenopausal cases and controls as well as postmenopausal women ages 35-54 (n = 3,526) (all presumed to have undetectable AMH concentrations) and applied weights to produce a sample representative of the cohort ages 35-54 (n = 17,799). The high proportion of undetectable AMH concentrations (41%) was addressed using reverse-scale Cox regression. An adjusted hazard ratio (HR) <1.0 indicates that exposed individuals had lower AMH concentrations than unexposed individuals. RESULTS Prenatal exposure to maternal residence or work on a farm was associated with lower AMH concentrations (HR 0.66; 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 0.48 to 0.90). Associations between childhood farm residence exposures and AMH were null or weak, except childhood contact with pesticide-treated livestock or buildings (HR 0.69; 95% CI = 0.40 to 1.2). CONCLUSIONS Replication of the prenatal farm exposure and lower adult AMH association raises concern that aspects of prenatal farm exposure may result in reduced adult ovarian reserve.

Abstract
Trace-level environmental data typically include values near or below detection and quantitation thresholds where health effects may result from low-concentration exposures to one chemical over time or to multiple chemicals. In a cook stove case study, bias in dibenzo[a,h]anthracene concentration means and standard deviations (SDs) was assessed following censoring at thresholds for selected analysis approaches: substituting threshold/2, maximum likelihood estimation, robust regression on order statistics, Kaplan-Meier, and omitting censored observations. Means and SDs for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-determined concentrations were calculated after censoring at detection and calibration thresholds, 17% and 55% of the data, respectively. Threshold/2 substitution was the least biased. Measurement values were subsequently simulated from two log-normal distributions at two sample sizes. Means and SDs were calculated for 30%, 50%, and 80% censoring levels and compared to known distribution counterparts. Simulation results illustrated (1) threshold/2 substitution to be inferior to modern after-censoring statistical approaches and (2) all after-censoring approaches to be inferior to including all measurement data in analysis. Additionally, differences in stove-specific group means were tested for uncensored samples and after censoring. Group differences of means tests varied depending on censoring and distributional decisions. Investigators should guard against censoring-related bias from (explicit or implicit) distributional and analysis approach decisions.

Abstract
Exposure to VOCs is linked to health effects ranging from asthma to cancer and to negative impacts on the hematopoietic system. We examined the association between select blood VOC concentrations and hematological measures in a representative sample of the U.S. population from NHANES cycles spanning the years 2005 to 2010. We used Cox regression to assess the association between complete blood count with five-part differential (CBC) parameters and seven select blood VOCs, while addressing low detection rates among VOCs. Tobacco smoke exposure was classified using serum cotinine levels. The not-smoke-exposed group had lower VOC levels for most analytes compared with the smoke-exposed. Correlations between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were moderate to strong. Statistical associations were found between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS) and hematocrit, hemoglobin, and white blood cell count among the smoke-exposed. Among the not-smoke-exposed, there was an association between BTEX and platelet count. We considered benzene most likely to be associated with higher levels of CBC concentrations. Our findings suggest VOC levels currently found in the general U.S. population are associated with changes in hematological measures, and smoking could be a contributor.

In environmental epidemiology, it is of interest to assess the health effects of environmental exposures. Some exposure analytes present values that are below the laboratory limit of detection (LOD). There have been many methods proposed for handling this issue to incorporate exposures subject to LOD in risk modeling using logistic regression. We present a fresh look at proposed methods to handle exposure analytes that present values that are below the LOD.

Abstract
Biological functions of hyaluronic acid (HA) depend on its molecular size. High-molecular weight HA (HMW-HA) is an important component of the endothelial wall and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Under inflammation or hypoxia, HMW-HA is degraded by hyaluronidases, such as HYAL-1 resulting in pro-inflammatory low-molecular weight fragments. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is characterised by intermittent hypoxia and systemic inflammation. Our aim was to evaluate circulating HMW-HA and HYAL-1 in OSA. We recruited 68 patients with OSA and 40 control volunteers. After full-night sleep study blood samples were taken for HMW-HA and HYAL-1 measurements. HYAL-1 levels were significantly higher in patients with OSA compared to controls (0.59/0.31-0.88/ng/mL vs. 0.31/0.31-0.58/ng/mL; p = 0.005) after adjustment for gender, age, BMI and smoking. There was a trend for reduced HMW-HA concentrations in OSA (31.63/18.11-59.25/ng/mL vs. 46.83/25.41-89.95/ng/mL; p = 0.068). Significant correlation was detected between circulating HMW-HA and apnoea-hypopnoea-index (r = - 0.195, p = 0.043), HYAL-1 and apnoea-hypopnoea-index (r = 0.30, p < 0.01) as well as oxygen desaturation index (r = 0.26, p < 0.01). Our results suggest that chronic hypoxia is associated with increased plasma HYAL-1 concentration and accelerated HMW-HA degradation. Altered hyaluronan metabolism may be involved in the inflammatory cascade potentially leading to endothelial dysfunction in OSA.

Abstract
Biomarkers of interest in urine, serum, or other biological matrices often have an assay limit of detection. When concentration levels of the biomarkers for some subjects fall below the limit, the measures for those subjects are censored. Censored data due to detection limits are very common in public health and medical research. If censored data from a single exposure group follow a normal distribution or follow a normal distribution after some transformations, Tobit regression models can be applied. Given a Tobit regression model and a detection limit, the proportion of censored data can be determined. However, in practice, it is common that the data can exhibit excessive censored observations beyond what would be expected under a Tobit regression model. One common cause is heterogeneity of the study population, that is, there exists a subpopulation who lack such biomarkers and their values are always under the detection limit, and hence are censored. In this article, we develop a new test for testing such latent class under a Tobit regression model by directly comparing the amount of observed censored data with what would be expected under the Tobit regression model. A closed form of the test statistic as well as its asymptotic properties are derived based on estimating equations. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the performance of the new test and compare the new one with the existing ones including the Wald test, likelihood ratio test, and score test. Two real data examples are also included for illustrative purpose.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Recent studies of environmental chemicals and endometriosis were critically evaluated from the epidemiologic perspective to identify aspects of study design and analyses that may contribute to discrepant results across studies. RECENT FINDINGS Of the 29 studies reviewed, 12 studies used new approaches to population-based sampling. The remaining studies were conducted primarily among patients undergoing pelvic surgery; controls may not represent the exposure experience of the underlying study base, resulting in biased estimates of associations. Most studies used biologic specimens collected near diagnosis and varied in analytic approaches to minimize bias. Few studies investigated ovarian, deep-infiltrating, and peritoneal endometriosis presentations separately. SUMMARY Recommendations to move the field forward include: (1) control selection from a defined study base, (2) exposure characterization during the etiologically-relevant window, (3) employment of best practices to minimize bias in analyses, and (4) separate consideration of endometriosis presentations that may be etiologically-distinct entities.

Abstract
Measures of substance concentration in urine, serum or other biological matrices often have an assay limit of detection. When concentration levels fall below the limit, the exact measures cannot be obtained. Instead, the measures are censored as only partial information that the levels are under the limit is known. Assuming the concentration levels are from a single population with a normal distribution or follow a normal distribution after some transformation, Tobit regression models, or censored normal regression models, are the standard approach for analyzing such data. However, in practice, it is often the case that the data can exhibit more censored observations than what would be expected under the Tobit regression models. One common cause is the heterogeneity of the study population, caused by the existence of a latent group of subjects who lack the substance measured. For such subjects, the measurements will always be under the limit. If a censored normal regression model is appropriate for modeling the subjects with the substance, the whole population follows a mixture of a censored normal regression model and a degenerate distribution of the latent class. While there are some studies on such mixture models, a fundamental question about testing whether such mixture modeling is necessary, i.e. whether such a latent class exists, has not been studied yet. In this paper, three tests including Wald test, likelihood ratio test and score test are developed for testing the existence of such latent class. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the tests, and two real data examples are employed to illustrate the tests.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Aluminum (Al) is a neurotoxicant; however, efforts to understand Al toxicity are limited by the lack of a quantitative biomarker of cumulative exposure. Bone Al measurements may address this need. Here, we describe and compare non-invasive bone Al measurements with fingernail Al and Al cumulative exposure indices (CEIs). METHODS We completed a cross-sectional study of 43 factory workers in Zunyi, China. Bone Al measurements were taken with a compact in-vivo neutron activation analysis system (IVNAA). Fingernail samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. CEIs, based on self-reported work history and prior literature, were calculated for the prior 5, 10, 15, 20 years and lifetime work history. Linear regressions adjusted for age and education compared fingernail Al and Al CEIs with bone Al. RESULTS Median (interquartile range (IQR)) Al measurements were: 15 μg/g dry bone (IQR = 28) for bone Al; 34.9 μg/g (43.3) for fingernail; and 24 (20) for lifetime CEI. In adjusted regression models, an increase in 15-year CEI was significantly associated with increased bone Al (β = 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.16, 1.66). Associations of bone Al with 10- and 20-year CEI were approaching statistical significance (β = 0.98, 95% CI: -0.14, 2.1; β = 0.59, 95% CI: -0.01, 1.18, respectively). Other models were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Bone Al was significantly associated with 15-year Al CEI, but not other Al CEIs or fingernail Al. Bone Al may be a useful measure of cumulative, rather than short-term, Al exposure. Additional refinement of this method is ongoing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flame retardants (FRs) are widespread in common goods, and workers in some industries can be exposed to high concentrations. Numerous studies describe occupational exposure to FRs, but the diversity of methods and of reported results renders their interpretation difficult for researchers, occupational hygienists, and decision makers. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this paper are to compile and summarize the scientific knowledge on occupational exposure to FRs as well as to identify research gaps and to formulate recommendations. METHODS Five databases were consulted for this systematic literature review (Embase, Medline [Pubmed], Global health, Web of Science, and Google Scholar), with terms related to occupational exposure and to FRs. Selected studies report quantitative measurements of exposure to organic FRs in a workplace, either in air, dust, or in workers' biological fluids. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement guidelines were followed. RESULTS The search yielded 1540 published articles, of which 58 were retained. The most frequently sampled FRs were polybrominated diphenyl ethers and novel brominated FRs. Offices and electronic waste recycling facilities were the most studied occupational settings, and the highest reported exposures were found in the latter, as well as in manufacturing of printed circuit boards, in aircrafts, and in firefighters. There were recurrent methodological issues, such as unstandardized and ill-described air and dust sampling, as well as deficient statistical analyses. CONCLUSIONS This review offers several recommendations. Workplaces such as electronic waste recycling or manufacturing of electronics as well as firefighters and aircraft personnel should be granted more attention from researchers and industrial hygienists. Methodical and standardized occupational exposure assessment approaches should be employed, and data analysis and reporting should be more systematic. Finally, more research is needed on newer chemical classes of FRs, on occupational exposure pathways, and on airborne FR particle distribution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that pose a serious hazard to the human health. Many epidemiological studies revealed a relationship between phthalates exposure and blood pressure in general population, while the relationship in pregnant women remains unknown. OBJECTIVES Aimed to elucidate whether phthalate exposure is associated with blood pressure among pregnant women. METHODS This study included 636 participants from Wuhan, China. Urine samples were conducted repeatedly in three trimesters, and 9 phthalates were measured in these samples. After each urine was sampled, all the participants completed blood pressure measurements. Associations between repeated measurements of phthalate concentration and blood pressure were evaluated by using generalized estimating equations. Stratified analysis by fetus gender was conducted. RESULTS Among the pregnant women with male fetuses, mono-i-butyl phthalate (MiBP) exposed in the 1st trimester was associated with the increased diastolic blood pressure (DBP) measured in the 2nd trimester, while the environmental risk score (ERS) measured in the 1st and 2nd trimester was positively associated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and DBP in the 2nd trimester. No significant relationships were observed among all the population or pregnant women with female fetuses. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to higher levels of MiBP may be related to increased blood pressure during pregnancy in pregnant women with male fetuses.

Abstract
Measuring the magnitude of reduction in HIV-1 RNA levels accurately is difficult because many patients have a censored reduction due to the limit of detection (LOD) of the virologic assay being employed. The use of censored methods has improved the analysis of such reductions compared with crude methods but implies independent censoring. For HIV-1 RNA reduction data, the value at which a patient's HIV-1 RNA reduction becomes censored is mainly determined by the patient's baseline HIV-1 RNA level. We suggest two possibilities based on modification of the redistribution to the right algorithm to handle the situation of dependence either from a single continuous marker, that is, the baseline HIV-1 RNA level, or from multiple markers. Two series of simulation, one in the HIV-1 RNA setting and one in the classical censoring setting, compared performance of the previous methods with our suggestions. Our proposed estimators show good performances when the dependent censoring is due to LOD. Overall, in the classical censoring setting, our suggestions perform as well as other methods including the Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted and the Kaplan-Meier imputation with Bootstrap. We applied those estimators to estimate the HIV-1 RNA reduction at week 8 of 502 patients who received a raltegravir-containing regimen and to data from the Mayo Clinic trial in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It is unclear how childhood adipose tissue deposition influences sex hormone profiles in later adolescence. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS Children (n = 418) with a mean age of 10.5 (1.5) years at visit 1 and 16.7 (1.2) at visit 2 in the Exploring Perinatal Outcomes among Children (EPOCH) Study. MEASUREMENTS We used reverse-scale Cox proportional hazard models to assess associations between pubertal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), testosterone (T), and oestradiol (E2) and childhood-to-puberty rate of change in visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). Models stratified by sex and adjusted for childhood adiposity, maternal factors, birthweight and pubertal onset, and then further adjusted for insulin, luteinizing hormone (LH), leptin and hepatic fat fraction. RESULTS Among boys, more rapid accumulation of either VAT or SAT was associated with lower testosterone at visit 2 (HR 0.86, and .96, respectively, both P < .0001), independently of race/ethnicity, LH, leptin and hepatic fat fraction. Among boys, more childhood VAT was associated with lower testosterone in adolescence (HR 0.98, P = .003), but this association did not persist after adjustment for leptin or insulin. No associations were observed between either fat measure and oestradiol or DHEA in boys. In girls, no associations between childhood fat or fat accumulation and sex hormones were observed. CONCLUSIONS More rapid accumulation of fat is associated with lower testosterone in boys. These associations suggest that fat growth influences androgen profiles in adolescent boys. Since fat accumulation is a modifiable risk factor, the study results provide a possible intervention target and time period for improving adult health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In response to a worldwide increase in production of electronic waste, the e-recycling industry is rapidly rowing. E-recycling workers are exposed to many potentially toxic contaminants, among which flame retardants (FRs), mainly suspected of being endocrine disruptors, are thought to be the most prevalent. OBJECTIVE To conduct an exposure assessment of four chemical groups of FRs in Canadian e-recycling facilities, and to identify the main cofactors of exposure. METHODS Personal air samples were collected over a workday for 85 workers in six e-recycling facilities, grouped into three facility sizes, and for 15 workers in control commercial waste facilities. Total particulate matter was measured by gravimetry with stationary air samples. FRs were collected on OSHA versatile samplers, which allow particulate and vapor phases collection. Fifteen polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners (PBDEs), nine novel brominated (NBFRs), two chlorinated (ClFRs), and fourteen organophosphate ester (OPEs) flame retardants were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sociodemographic data, tasks performed and materials processed by participating workers were recorded. Tobit regressions were used to identify cofactors of exposure, and their conclusions were corroborated using semi-parametric reverse Cox regressions. RESULTS Thirty-nine of the 40 FRs analysed were detected in at least one air sample in e-recycling, and workers in this industry were exposed on average to 26 (range 12 to 39) different substances. The most detected chemical group of FRs in e-recycling was PBDEs with geometric mean sums of all congeners ranging from 120 to 5100 ng/m3, followed by OPEs with 740 to 1000 ng/m3, NBFRs with 7.6 to 100 ng/m3, and finally ClFRs with 3.9 to 32 mg/m3. The most important cofactor of exposure was the size of the e-recycling facility, with the largest one presenting on average 12 times the concentrations found in the control facility. Among tasks as potential cofactors of exposure, manual dismantling and baler operation exposed workers to some of the highest concentrations of PBDEs and ClFRs. There was a reduction of up to 27% in exposure to FRs associated with a 3-year increase in seniority. Finally, particulate matter concentrations in e-recycling facilities were highly correlated with all chemical classes except OPEs, and were higher in the large facility. CONCLUSIONS Among the FRs analysed, PBDE exposure was particularly high in e-recycling. Dust and particulate matter reduction strategies in these workplaces, together with training on proper working practices would certainly be important first steps to lower occupational exposures and prevent potential health effects.

Abstract
Arsenic is a prevalent environmental contaminant, and its folate-dependent methylation is important for detoxification in the body. In this study, we investigated the association between serum folate levels and methylation using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2003-2012) (N = 11,016). Multivariate linear regression and penalized spline regression models were used to examine the association and possible upper limit of folate level regarding its impact on methylation in children (≤18 years) and adults (>18 years), respectively. Serum folate levels, methylation metabolites including urinary monomethylarsonic acid (MMA(V)) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA(V)), and demographic variables were extracted from NHANES. Results showed that urinary percentage of DMA(V) (%DMA(V)) was positively associated with log(serum folate levels) after adjustment in children (β = 1.93, p < 0.01); urinary percentage of MMA(V) (%MMA(V)) was positively associated with log (serum folate levels) after adjustment in adults (β = 0.40, p < 0.01). No upper limit of folate level regarding its impact on arsenic methylation was identified. More than 50% of Non-Hispanic black and smokers with high total urinary arsenic levels had low serum folate levels. Our results indicate that folate promotes arsenic methylation, but the patterns are different in children versus in adults. Future interventions may be needed for the population exposed to high level of arsenic but with low serum folate to protect against the potential adverse health effects of arsenic.

Abstract
This paper deals with a Cox proportional hazards regression model, where some covariates of interest are randomly right-censored. While methods for censored outcomes have become ubiquitous in the literature, methods for censored covariates have thus far received little attention and, for the most part, dealt with the issue of limit-of-detection. For randomly censored covariates, an often-used method is the inefficient complete-case analysis (CCA) which consists in deleting censored observations in the data analysis. When censoring is not completely independent, the CCA leads to biased and spurious results. Methods for missing covariate data, including type I and type II covariate censoring as well as limit-of-detection do not readily apply due to the fundamentally different nature of randomly censored covariates. We develop a novel method for censored covariates using a conditional mean imputation based on either Kaplan-Meier estimates or a Cox proportional hazards model to estimate the effects of these covariates on a time-to-event outcome. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method through simulation studies and show that it provides good bias reduction and statistical efficiency. Finally, we illustrate the method using data from the Framingham Heart Study to assess the relationship between offspring and parental age of onset of cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Background Biological assays for the quantification of markers may suffer from a lack of sensitivity and thus from an analytical detection limit. This is the case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral load. Below this threshold the exact value is unknown and values are consequently left-censored. Statistical methods have been proposed to deal with left-censoring but few are adapted in the context of high-dimensional data. Methods We propose to reverse the Buckley-James least squares algorithm to handle left-censored data enhanced with a Lasso regularization to accommodate high-dimensional predictors. We present a Lasso-regularized Buckley-James least squares method with both non-parametric imputation using Kaplan-Meier and parametric imputation based on the Gaussian distribution, which is typically assumed for HIV viral load data after logarithmic transformation. Cross-validation for parameter-tuning is based on an appropriate loss function that takes into account the different contributions of censored and uncensored observations. We specify how these techniques can be easily implemented using available R packages. The Lasso-regularized Buckley-James least square method was compared to simple imputation strategies to predict the response to antiretroviral therapy measured by HIV viral load according to the HIV genotypic mutations. We used a dataset composed of several clinical trials and cohorts from the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research (HIV Med. 2008;7:27-40). The proposed methods were also assessed on simulated data mimicking the observed data. Results Approaches accounting for left-censoring outperformed simple imputation methods in a high-dimensional setting. The Gaussian Buckley-James method with cross-validation based on the appropriate loss function showed the lowest prediction error on simulated data and, using real data, the most valid results according to the current literature on HIV mutations. Conclusions The proposed approach deals with high-dimensional predictors and left-censored outcomes and has shown its interest for predicting HIV viral load according to HIV mutations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Small studies suggest that fetal sex alters maternal inflammation. We examined the association between fetal sex, preeclampsia and circulating maternal immune markers. METHODS This was a secondary data analysis within a nested case-control study of 216 preeclamptic women and 432 randomly selected normotensive controls from the Collaborative Perinatal Project. All women had singleton, primiparous pregnancies without chronic health conditions. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between female fetal sex and preeclampsia. Outcomes included preeclampsia, preterm preeclampsia (<37 and <34 weeks), and normotensive preterm birth <37 weeks. Associations between female fetal sex and immune markers [interleukin (IL)-6, IL4, IL5, IL12, IL10, IL8, IL1-beta, interferon (IFN)-gamma, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta, and transforming growth factor-beta] were examined using a statistical method developed for large proportions of censored biomarker data. Models were adjusted for maternal age, race, body mass index, and smoking. RESULTS Women with early preterm preeclampsia (<34 weeks) had higher odds of having a female fetus (ORadj. 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-9.6) and women with normotensive preterm birth had lower odds (ORadj. 0.5, 95% CI 0.3-0.9). Female fetal sex was associated with lower first trimester pro-inflammatory IFNγ and IL-12 but higher second trimester pro-inflammatory IL1β and TNFβ, anti-inflammatory IL4r, and regulatory cytokines IL5 and IL10. Female fetal sex was associated with higher postpartum IL10 in preeclamptic women only. CONCLUSIONS We identified sexual dimorphism in maternal inflammation. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine if fetal sex impacts the maternal immune milieu across pregnancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The potential impact of environmental exposure to pyrethroid insecticides on child neurodevelopment has only just started to receive attention despite their widespread use. We investigated the associations between prenatal and childhood exposure to pyrethroid insecticides and behavioural skills in 6-year-olds. METHODS The PELAGIE cohort enrolled 3421 pregnant women from Brittany, France between 2002 and 2006. 428 mothers were randomly selected for the study when their children turned 6, and 287 (67%) agreed to participate. Children's behaviour was assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Three subscales (prosocial behaviour, internalising disorders and externalising disorders) were considered. Five pyrethroid metabolites were measured in maternal and child urine samples collected between 6 and 19 gestational weeks and at 6 years of age, respectively. Logistic regression and reverse-scale Cox regression models were used to estimate the associations between SDQ scores and urinary pyrethroid metabolite concentrations, adjusting for organophosphate metabolite concentrations and potential confounders. RESULTS Increased prenatal cis-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (DCCA) concentrations were associated with internalising difficulties (Cox p value=0.05). For childhood 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (PBA) concentrations, a positive association was observed with externalising difficulties (Cox p value=0.04) and high ORs were found for abnormal or borderline social behaviour (OR 2.93, 95% CI 1.27 to 6.78, and OR 1.91, 95% CI 0.80 to 4.57, for the intermediate and highest metabolite categories, respectively). High childhood trans-DCCA concentrations were associated with reduced externalising disorders (Cox p value=0.03). CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that exposure to certain pyrethroids, at environmental levels, may negatively affect neurobehavioral development by 6 years of age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Circulating immune markers may be associated with preeclampsia but further investigations in early pregnancy and among preeclampsia subtypes are warranted. We examined immune markers in 208 preeclamptic women and 411 normotensive controls. METHODS Our study was nested within the Collaborative Perinatal Project. A total of 242 women had first trimester serum samples and 392 had second trimester serum samples. Preeclampsia was defined as hypertension >20weeks of gestation with proteinuria or pulmonary edema, oliguria, or convulsions. Preterm preeclampsia was defined as preeclampsia with delivery less than 37weeks of gestation. Associations between immune markers RANTES, interleukin (IL)-6, IL4, IL5, IL12, IL10, IL8, IL1-beta, interferon (IFN)-gamma, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and beta, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta and preeclampsia were explored using a modified version of cox regression developed to address data with non-detectable levels. Models were adjusted for body mass index, gestational age of blood sampling, fetal sex, smoking, socioeconomic status and maternal age. RESULTS In first trimester samples, IL-12 was associated with preeclampsia (p=0.0255). IFN-gamma (p=0.0063), IL1-beta (p=0.0006), IL5 (p=0.0422) and TNFr (p=0.0460) were associated with preterm preeclampsia only. In second trimester samples, IL1-beta was associated with preeclampsia (p=0.0180) and term preeclampsia (p=0.0454). After correction for multiple comparisons, only IL1-beta remained associated with preterm preeclampsia in the first trimester (p=0.0288). DISCUSSION Elevated first trimester IL1-beta appears to be associated with preterm preeclampsia. However, few associations were observed in the second trimester. Systemic immune markers alone may not be useful for preeclampsia prediction.

Abstract
Motivated by a study conducted to evaluate the associations of 51 inflammatory markers and lung cancer risk, we propose several approaches of varying computational complexity for analyzing multiple correlated markers that are also censored due to lower and/or upper limits of detection, using likelihood-based sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) methods. We extend the theory and the likelihood-based SDR framework in two ways: (i) we accommodate censored predictors directly in the likelihood, and (ii) we incorporate variable selection. We find linear combinations that contain all the information that the correlated markers have on an outcome variable (i.e., are sufficient for modeling and prediction of the outcome) while accounting for censoring of the markers. These methods yield efficient estimators and can be applied to any type of outcome, including continuous and categorical. We illustrate and compare all methods using data from the motivating study and in simulations. We find that explicitly accounting for the censoring in the likelihood of the SDR methods can lead to appreciable gains in efficiency and prediction accuracy, and also outperformed multiple imputations combined with standard SDR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Potential associations between background environmental chemical exposures and autoimmunity are understudied. OBJECTIVES Our exploratory study investigated exposure to individual environmental chemicals and selected mixtures in relation to the presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), a widely used biomarker of autoimmunity, in a representative sample of the U.S. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis used data on 4,340 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2004), of whom 14% were ANA positive, to explore associations between ANA and concentrations of dioxins, dibenzofurans, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorines, organophosphates, phenols, metals, and other environmental exposures and metabolites measured in participants' serum, whole blood, or urine. For dioxin-like compounds with toxic equivalency factors, we developed and applied a new statistical approach to study selected mixtures. Lognormal models and censored-data methods produced estimates of chemical associations with ANA in males, nulliparous females, and parous females; these estimates were adjusted for confounders and accommodated concentrations below detectable levels. RESULTS Several associations between chemical concentration and ANA positivity were observed, but only the association in males exposed to triclosan remained statistically significant after correcting for multiple comparisons (mean concentration ratio = 2.8; 95% CI: 1.8, 4.5; p < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that background levels of most xenobiotic exposures typical in the U.S. population are not strongly associated with ANA. Future studies should ideally reduce exposure misclassification by including prospective measurement of the chemicals of concern and should track changes in ANA and other autoantibodies over time. Abstract
Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used in agriculture and in homes. Despite the neurotoxicity of these insecticides at high doses, few studies have examined whether lower-level exposures could adversely affect children's neurodevelopment. The PELAGIE cohort included 3421 pregnant women from Brittany, France between 2002 and 2006. When their children reached their sixth birthday, 428 mothers from the cohort were randomly selected, successfully contacted and found eligible. A total of 287 (67%) mothers agreed to participate with their children in the neuropsychological follow-up. Two cognitive domains were assessed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children: verbal comprehension and working memory. Five pyrethroid and two organophosphate insecticide metabolites were measured in maternal and child first-void urine samples collected between 6 and 19 gestational weeks and at 6years of age, respectively. Linear regression models were used to estimate associations between cognitive scores and urinary pyrethroid metabolite concentrations, adjusting for organophosphate metabolite concentrations and potential confounders. Maternal prenatal pyrethroid metabolite concentrations were not consistently associated with any children's cognitive scores. By contrast, childhood 3-PBA and cis-DBCA concentrations were both negatively associated with verbal comprehension scores (P-trend=0.04 and P-trend<0.01, respectively) and with working memory scores (P-trend=0.05 and P-trend<0.01, respectively). No associations were observed for the three other childhood pyrethroid metabolite concentrations (4-F-3-PBA, cis-DCCA, and trans-DCCA). Low-level childhood exposures to deltamethrin (as cis-DBCA is its principal and selective metabolite), in particular, and to pyrethroid insecticides, in general (as reflected in levels of the 3-PBA metabolite) may negatively affect neurocognitive development by 6years of age. Whatever their etiology, these cognitive deficits may be of importance educationally, because cognitive impairments in children interfere with learning and social development. Potential causes that can be prevented are of paramount public health importance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm birth (PTB), a leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity, has a complex etiology with a multitude of interacting causes and risk factors. The role of environmental contaminants, particularly bisphenol A (BPA), is understudied with regard to PTB. OBJECTIVES In the present study we examined the relationship between longitudinally measured BPA exposure during gestation and PTB. METHODS A nested case-control study was performed from women enrolled in a prospective birth cohort study at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, during 2006-2008. Urine samples were analyzed for BPA concentrations at a minimum of three time points during pregnancy on 130 cases of PTB and 352 randomly assigned controls. Clinical classifications of PTB were defined as "spontaneous," which was preceded by spontaneous preterm labor or preterm premature rupture of membranes, or "placental," which was preceded by preeclampsia or intrauterine growth restriction. RESULTS Geometric mean concentrations of BPA did not differ significantly between cases and controls. In adjusted models, urinary BPA averaged across pregnancy was not significantly associated with PTB. When examining clinical classifications of PTB, urinary BPA late in pregnancy was significantly associated with increased odds of delivering a spontaneous PTB. After stratification on infant's sex, averaged BPA exposure during pregnancy was associated with significantly increased odds of being delivered preterm among females, but not males. CONCLUSIONS These results provide little evidence of a relationship between BPA and prematurity, though further research may be warranted given the generalizability of participant recruitment from a tertiary teaching hospital, limited sample size, and significant associations among females and within the clinical subcategories of PTB. Abstract
The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is conducting an epidemiologic study (GuLF STUDY) to investigate the health of the workers and volunteers who participated from April to December of 2010 in the response and cleanup of the oil release after the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The exposure assessment component of the study involves analyzing thousands of personal monitoring measurements that were collected during this effort. A substantial portion of these data has values reported by the analytic laboratories to be below the limits of detection (LOD). A simulation study was conducted to evaluate three established methods for analyzing data with censored observations to estimate the arithmetic mean (AM), geometric mean (GM), geometric standard deviation (GSD), and the 95th percentile (X0.95) of the exposure distribution: the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, the β-substitution, and the Kaplan-Meier (K-M) methods. Each method was challenged with computer-generated exposure datasets drawn from lognormal and mixed lognormal distributions with sample sizes (N) varying from 5 to 100, GSDs ranging from 2 to 5, and censoring levels ranging from 10 to 90%, with single and multiple LODs. Using relative bias and relative root mean squared error (rMSE) as the evaluation metrics, the β-substitution method generally performed as well or better than the ML and K-M methods in most simulated lognormal and mixed lognormal distribution conditions. The ML method was suitable for large sample sizes (N ≥ 30) up to 80% censoring for lognormal distributions with small variability (GSD = 2-3). The K-M method generally provided accurate estimates of the AM when the censoring was <50% for lognormal and mixed distributions. The accuracy and precision of all methods decreased under high variability (GSD = 4 and 5) and small to moderate sample sizes (N < 20) but the β-substitution was still the best of the three methods. When using the ML method, practitioners are cautioned to be aware of different ways of estimating the AM as they could lead to biased interpretation. A limitation of the β-substitution method is the absence of a confidence interval for the estimate. More research is needed to develop methods that could improve the estimation accuracy for small sample sizes and high percent censored data and also provide uncertainty intervals.
