Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The potential impact of childhood bereavement-a severe psychological stressor-on childhood type 1 diabetes development remains unclear. Here, we aimed to bridge this knowledge gap and assess whether bereavement characteristics influenced any impact. METHODS We conducted a register-based cohort study encompassing 3,598,159 children born in Sweden between 1987 and 2020. Childhood bereavement was defined as the death of a biological mother, father or sibling. Diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in childhood (<18 years) was ascertained through the National Patient Register. We applied a Cox proportional hazards regression model to investigate the impact of childhood bereavement on type 1 diabetes, while adjusting for potential confounders (including parental type 1 diabetes status, country of birth and demographic characteristics). RESULTS During follow-up, 86,226 children (2.4%) lost a family member, and 18,817 children (0.52%) were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (median age at onset 9.1 years). We did not detect any overall association between childhood bereavement and type 1 diabetes (adjusted HR 1.04; 95% CI 0.93, 1.17). We found no influence of age at loss, cause of death, familial relationship to the deceased, and time since loss. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION In this large population-based Swedish study, we observed no evidence supporting a link between childhood bereavement and type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
AIMS Studies of social inequality and risk of developing type 1 diabetes are inconsistent. The present review aimed to comprehensively review relevant literature and describe what has been reported on socio-economic status or parental occupation and risk of type 1 diabetes in children. METHODS We searched for publications between 1 January 1970 and 30 November 2021. We focused on the most recent and/or informative publication in cases of multiple publications from the same data source and referred to these as primary studies. RESULTS Our search identified 69 publications with relevant data. We identified eight primary cohort studies with individual-level data, which we considered the highest quality of evidence. Furthermore, we identified 13 primary case-control studies and 14 semi-ecological studies with area-level socio-economic status variables which provided a weaker quality of evidence. Four of eight primary cohort studies contained data on maternal education, showing non-linear associations with type 1 diabetes that were not consistent across studies. There was no consistent pattern on the association of parental occupation and childhood-onset type 1 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS There is a need for more high-quality studies, but the existing literature does not suggest a major and consistent role of socio-economic status in the risk of type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine sex differences in risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN). METHOD This population-based study involved 44,743 individuals (6,239 AN cases including 5,818 females and 421 males, and 38,504 controls including 18,818 females and 19,686 males) born in Denmark between May 1981 and December 2009. Follow-up began on the individual's sixth birthday and ended at AN diagnosis, emigration, death, or December 31, 2016, whichever occurred first. Exposures included socioeconomic status (SES), pregnancy, birth, and early childhood factors based on data from Danish registers, and psychiatric and metabolic polygenic risk scores (PRS) based on genetic data. Hazard ratios were estimated using weighted Cox proportional hazards models stratified by sex (assigned at birth), with AN diagnosis as the outcome. RESULTS The effects of early life exposures and PRS on AN risk were comparable between females and males. Although we observed some differences in the magnitude and direction of effects, there were no significant interactions between sex and SES, pregnancy, birth, or early childhood exposures. The effects of most PRS on AN risk were highly similar between the sexes. We observed significant sex-specific effects of parental psychiatric history and body mass index PRS, though these effects did not survive corrections for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSIONS Risk factors for AN are comparable between females and males. Collaboration across countries with large registers is needed to further investigate sex-specific effects of genetic, biological, and environmental exposures on AN risk, including exposures in later childhood and adolescence as well as the additive effects of exposures. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Sex differences in the prevalence and clinical presentation of AN warrant examination of sex-specific risk factors. This population-based study indicates that the effects of polygenic risk and early life exposures on AN risk are comparable between females and males. Collaboration between countries with large registers is needed to further investigate sex-specific AN risk factors and improve early identification of AN.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine risk of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in the offspring of parents with a psychiatric history at the birth of the child, which would suggest potential shared familial or environmental risk factors between T1DM and psychiatric disorders. METHODS We established a cohort including all children born in Sweden in 1997-2016, and their parents. Children were followed up from birth until 31 Dec 2017, using national registers. Relative risk for T1DM was estimated by incidence rate ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), calculated from Poisson regression. We examined psychiatric subtypes, T1DM risk within subgroups and in relation to the timing of exposure. RESULTS The study cohort included 1,497,949 children. During follow-up, 7,794 cases of T1DM were identified. Children of mothers with psychiatric disorders at delivery had a higher risk of T1DM (RR 1.10 [95%CI 1.01-1.20]). Psychiatric diagnoses in fathers or assigned after delivery was not associated with increased T1DM risk. The observed association disappeared after adjusting for T1DM in parents; however, remained significant in female offspring. Maternal eating disorder (RR 1.53 [1.17-2.00]) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (RR 1.62 [1.02-2.58]) were associated with offspring T1DM, independent of parental T1DM. CONCLUSION Our results do not support a strong genetic link between psychiatric conditions and T1DM. However, the risks of offspring T1DM were increased in subgroups of female offspring and in offspring of mothers with a history of eating disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder, independent of heredity for T1DM, which may warrant further investigation in future studies.

Abstract
Background The association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and diabetes is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to quantify the association between the number and types of ACEs and diabetes during adulthood based on available observational studies. Methods A comprehensive literature search of studies exploring the association between ACEs and diabetes was conducted in PubMed, Medline, and Embase databases until 15 April 2022. A random-effects model was used to pool odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the number and types of ACEs with diabetes. Regarding the association between the number of ACEs and diabetes, we used funnel plots to examine publication bias, subgroup analysis to explore sources of heterogeneity, and sensitivity analysis to explore the robustness of the pooled results. Results A total of 49 studies were included. Individuals with higher continuous ACEs (per each additional ACE: OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.02-1.10), any ACE (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.16-1.28), or ≥4 ACEs (OR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.27-1.63) were at an increased risk of diabetes in adulthood when compared with individuals without ACEs. Across specific ACE types, childhood economic adversity (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.04-1.19), physical abuse (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.07-1.21), sexual abuse (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.12-1.39), verbal abuse (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.03-1.20), and incarceration (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.03-1.45) were associated with diabetes. However, neglect, emotional abuse, domestic violence, parental divorce or separation, parental death, and living with a family member with substance abuse or mental disorders were not significantly associated with diabetes. Conclusions Individuals with ACEs may have a cumulative risk for diabetes in adulthood. It is critical to prevent ACEs and build resilience in individuals affected by ACEs.

Abstract
Objectives Adverse childhood experience is thought to be associated with risk of coronary heart disease, but it is not clear which experiences are cardiotoxic, and whether risk increases with the accumulation of adverse childhood experiences. Methods Participants were 5149 adults (72.6% men) in the Whitehall II cohort study. Parental death was recorded at phase 1 (median age in years 44.3), and 13 other adverse childhood experiences at phase 5 (55.3). We applied Cox proportional hazards regression with person-time from phase 5 to examine associations of adverse childhood experiences with incident coronary heart disease. We predicted hazard ratios according to count of the experiences, and examined dose-response effect. We finally estimated reduction of coronary heart disease in a hypothetical scenario, the absence of adverse childhood experiences. Results Among study participants, 62.9% had at least one adversity, with "financial problems" having the highest prevalence (26.1%). There were 509 first episodes of coronary heart disease during an average 12.9 years follow-up. Among 14 adverse childhood experiences in a multiply adjusted model, "parental unemployment" showed the highest hazard of coronary heart disease incidence (hazard ratio; 95% confidence interval: 1.53; 1.16 to 2.02). No dose-response effect was observed (constant for proportionality in hazard ratio: 1.05, 0.99 to 1.11). Based on the estimates of final model, in the absence of childhood adversities, we estimated a 6.0% reduction in coronary heart disease (0.94; 0.87 to 1.01), but the confidence interval includes one. Conclusion Although individual adverse childhood experiences show some association with coronary heart disease, there is no clear relationship with the number of adverse experiences. Further research is required to quantify effects of multiple and combinations of adverse childhood experiences considering timing, duration, and severity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several studies have linked diabetes mellitus to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). While a number of studies have examined the association between ACEs and diabetes in Western populations, few have done it in Asian populations. The current study aimed to examine (1) the association between ACEs and diabetes, including the association after age stratification, and (2) the association of comorbid depression, resource use and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among those with diabetes and ACEs in Singapore. SETTINGS Participants were surveyed in their homes or any other preferred venue of their choice. PARTICIPANTS 6126 individuals aged 18 years and above were randomly selected among Singapore residents. DESIGN Cross-sectional nationwide epidemiological study. RESULTS Exposure to any ACE was not associated with increased odds of diabetes; however, those who had experienced parental separation, death or divorce of a parent had higher odds of diabetes. In addition, we observed significant interaction between age and ACEs in relation to odds of diabetes. ACEs were significantly associated with higher odds of diabetes mainly in the younger age group. The prevalence of major depressive disorder was significantly higher among those with diabetes and ACEs than those with diabetes alone (3.7% and 0.3% respectively). CONCLUSIONS Efforts to promote regular exercise and healthy lifestyles both in the population and among those with diabetes must continue for the prevention and management of diabetes. The findings emphasise the need to create more awareness of both the prevalence and impact of ACEs among those treating chronic diseases.
