Depleted Housing Elicits Cardiopulmonary Dysfunction After a Single Flaming Eucalyptus Wildfire Smoke Exposure in a Sex-Specific Manner in ApoE Knockout Mice

Although it is well established that wildfire smoke exposure can increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the combined effects of non-chemical stressors and wildfire smoke remains understudied. Housing is a non-chemical stressor that is a major determinant of cardiovascular health, however, disparities in neighborhood and social status have exacerbated the cardiovascular health gaps within the United States. Further, pre-existing cardiovascular morbidities, such as atherosclerosis, can worsen the response to wildfire smoke exposures. This represents a potentially hazardous interaction between inadequate housing and stress, cardiovascular morbidities, and worsened responses to wildfire smoke exposures. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of enriched (EH) versus depleted (DH) housing on pulmonary and cardiovascular responses to a single flaming eucalyptus wildfire smoke (WS) exposure in male and female apolipoprotein E (ApoE) knockout mice, which develop an atherosclerosis-like phenotype. The results of this study show that cardiopulmonary responses to WS exposure occur in a sex-specific manner. EH blunts adverse WS-induced ventilatory responses, specifically an increase in tidal volume (TV), expiratory time (Te), and relaxation time (RT) after a WS exposure, but only in females. EH also blunted an increase in isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) and the myocardial performance index (MPI) 1-week after exposures, also only in females. Our results suggest that housing alters the cardiovascular response to a single WS exposure, and that DH might cause increased susceptibility to environmental exposures that manifest in altered ventilation patterns and diastolic dysfunction in a sex-specific manner.

Neuroendocrine contribution to sex-related variations in adverse air pollution health effects

Air pollution exposure is ranked as a leading environmental risk factor for not only cardiopulmonary diseases but also for systemic health ailments including diabetes, reproductive abnormalities, and neuropsychiatric disorders, likely mediated by central neural stress mechanisms. Current experimental evidence links many air pollution health outcomes with activation of neuroendocrine sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) stress axes associated with resultant increases in adrenal-derived hormone levels acting as circulating mediators of multi-organ stress reactions. Epidemiological and experimental investigations also demonstrated sex-specific responses to air pollutant inhalation, which may be attributed to hormonal interactions within the stress and reproductive axes. Sex hormones (androgens and estrogens) interact with neuroendocrine functions to influence hypothalamic responses, subsequently augmenting stress-mediated metabolic and immune changes. These neurohormonal interactions may contribute to innate sex-specific responses to inhaled irritants, inducing differing individual susceptibility. The aim of this review was to: (1) examine neuroendocrine co-regulation of the HPA axis by gonadal hormones, (2) provide experimental evidence demonstrating sex-specific respiratory and systemic effects attributed to air pollutant inhalation exposure, and (3) postulate proposed mechanisms of stress and sex hormone interactions during air pollution-related stress.

Effect of Short-Term Restraint Stress on the Hypothalamic Transcriptome Profiles of Rats with Inherited Stress-Induced Arterial Hypertension (ISIAH) and Normotensive Wistar Albino Glaxo (WAG) Rats

Emotional stress is one of the health risk factors in the modern human lifestyle. Stress exposure can provoke the manifestation of various pathological conditions, one of which is a sharp increase in the blood pressure level. In the present study, we analyzed changes in the transcriptome profiles of the hypothalamus of hypertensive ISIAH and normotensive WAG rats exposed to a single short-term restraint stress (the rat was placed in a tight wire-mesh cage for 2 h). This type of stress can be considered emotional stress. The functional annotation of differentially expressed genes allowed us to identify the most significantly altered biological processes in the hypothalamus of hypertensive and normotensive rats. The study made it possible to identify a group of genes that describe a general response to stress, independent of the rat genotype, as well as a hypothalamic response to stress specific to each strain. The alternatively changing expression of the Npas4 (neuronal PAS domain protein 4) gene, which is downregulated in the hypothalamus of the control WAG rats and induced in the hypothalamus of hypertensive ISIAH rats, is suggested to be the key event for understanding inter-strain differences in the hypothalamic response to stress. The stress-dependent ISIAH strain-specific induction of Fos and Jun gene transcription may play a crucial role in neuronal activation in this rat strain. The data obtained can be potentially useful in the selection of molecular targets for the development of pharmacological approaches to the correction of stress-induced pathologies related to neuronal excitability, taking into account the hypertensive status of the patients.

Exposure to urban ambient particles (PM2.5) before pregnancy affects the expression of endometrial receptive markers to embryo implantation in mice: Preliminary results

Air pollution (AP) is one of the main recent concerns in reproductive healthy due to its potential to promote negative outcomes during pregnancy and male and female fertility. Several studies have demonstrated that AP exposure has been linked to increased embryonic implantation failures, alterations in embryonic, fetal and placental development. For a well-succeeded implantation, both competent blastocyst and receptive endometrium are required. Based on the lack of data about the effect of AP in endometrial receptivity, this study aimed to evaluate he particulate matter (PM) exposure impact on uterine receptive markers in mice and associate the alterations to increased implantation failures due to AP. For this study, ten dams per group were exposed for 39 days to either filter (F) or polluted air (CAP). At fourth gestational day (GD4), females were euthanized. Morphological, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical and molecular analysis of uterine and ovarian samples were performed. CAP-exposed females presented a reduced number of corpus luteum; glands and epithelial cells were increased with pinopodes formation impairment. Immunohistochemistry analysis revealed decreased LIF protein levels. These preliminary data suggests that PM exposure may exert negative effects on endometrial receptivity by affecting crucial parameters to embryonic implantation as uterine morphological differentiation, corpus luteum quantity and LIF expression during implantation window.

Environmental Exposome and Atrial Fibrillation: Emerging Evidence and Future Directions

There has been increased awareness of the linkage between environmental exposures and cardiovascular health and disease. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, affecting millions of people worldwide and contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. Although numerous studies have explored the role of genetic and lifestyle factors in the development and progression of atrial fibrillation, the potential impact of environmental determinants on this prevalent condition has received comparatively less attention. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence on environmental determinants of atrial fibrillation, encompassing factors such as air pollution, temperature, humidity, and other meteorologic conditions, noise pollution, greenspace, and the social environment. We discuss the existing evidence from epidemiological and mechanistic studies, critically evaluating the strengths and limitations of these investigations and the potential underlying biological mechanisms through which environmental exposures may affect atrial fibrillation risk. Furthermore, we address the potential implications of these findings for public health and clinical practice and identify knowledge gaps and future research directions in this emerging field.

Maternal health outcomes associated with ambient air pollution: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

A growing body of literature demonstrated an association between exposure to ambient air pollution and maternal health outcomes with mixed findings. The objective of this umbrella review was to systematically summarize the global evidence on the effects of air pollutants on maternal health outcomes. We adopted the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting standards for this umbrella review. We conducted a comprehensive search across six major electronic databases and other sources to identify relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) published from the inception of these databases up to June 30, 2023. Out of 2399 records, 20 citations matched all pre-determined eligibility criteria that include SRMAs focusing on exposure to air pollution and its impact on maternal health, reported quantitative measures or summary effects, and published in peer-reviewed journals in the English language. The risk of bias of included SRMAs was evaluated based on the JBI critical appraisal checklist. All SRMAs reported significant positive associations between ambient air pollution and several maternal health outcomes. Specifically, particulate matter (PM), SO2, and NO demonstrated positive associations with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Moreover, PM and NO2 showed a consistent positive relationship with hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP) and preeclampsia (PE). Although limited, available evidence highlighted a positive correlation between PM and gestational hypertension (GH) and spontaneous abortion (SAB). Only one meta-analysis reported the effects of air pollution on maternal postpartum depression (PPD) where only PM10 showed a significant positive relationship. Limited studies were identified from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), suggesting evidence gap from the global south. This review necessitates further research on underrepresented regions and communities to strengthen evidence on this critical issue. Lastly, interdisciplinary policymaking and multilevel interventions are needed to alleviate ambient air pollution and associated maternal health disparities.

Associations of low levels of air pollution with cardiometabolic outcomes and the role of diet quality in individuals with obesity

BACKGROUND

Exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse cardiometabolic health effects and increased mortality, even at low concentrations. Some of the biological mechanisms through which air pollution can affect cardiometabolic health overlap with health outcomes associated with diet quality and changes in diet.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to investigate associations of air pollutants at average concentrations below the World Health Organization, 2021 air quality guidelines with cardiometabolic outcomes. Furthermore, potential interaction between air pollutants and diet quality will be assessed.

METHODS

82 individuals with obesity participated in a combined weight loss and weight loss maintenance study for a total of 33 weeks. A secondary analysis was conducted incorporating air pollution measurements. Data were analysed with linear mixed-effects models.

RESULTS

A total of 17 significant associations were observed for single pollutants with 10 cardiometabolic outcomes, predominantly related to blood lipids, hormones, and glucose regulation. Diet quality, as measured by the Baltic Sea Diet score, did not appear to mediate the association of air pollution with cardiometabolic outcomes, however, diet quality was observed to significantly modify the association of PM2.5 with total cholesterol, and the associations of NO and O3 with ghrelin.

DISCUSSION

These findings suggest that exposure to ambient air pollutants, especially particulate matter, at levels below World Health Organization, 2021 air quality guidelines, were associated with changes in cardiometabolic risk factors. Diet may be a personal-level approach for individuals to modify the impact of exposure to air pollution on cardiometabolic health.

Association between prenatal period exposure to ambient air pollutants and development of postpartum depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis

There is body of evidence supporting a role for maternal exposure to ambient air pollutants and postpartum depression (PPD). We attempted to review the literature systematically to assess the association between exposure to both ambient air particulate matters within pregnancy and PPD. The effect estimates extracting across each study were standardized to a 10 μg/m3 change. The random-effects model was applied to pool odds ratios. According to the three included cohort articles, exposure to PM10 within second trimester (OR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.15-1.37) was significantly associated with higher odds of PPD. However, there was no significant association between having exposure to other ambient air pollutants and PPD. This meta-analysis showed that air pollutants could be associated with an increased risk of PPD.

Serum metabolome and liver transcriptome reveal acrolein inhalation-induced sex-specific homeostatic dysfunction

Acrolein, a respiratory irritant, induces systemic neuroendocrine stress. However, peripheral metabolic effects have not been examined. Male and female WKY rats were exposed to air (0 ppm) or acrolein (3.16 ppm) for 4 h, followed by immediate serum and liver tissue collection. Serum metabolomics in both sexes and liver transcriptomics in males were evaluated to characterize the systemic metabolic response. Of 887 identified metabolites, > 400 differed between sexes at baseline. An acrolein biomarker, 3-hydroxypropyl mercapturic acid, increased 18-fold in males and 33-fold in females, indicating greater metabolic detoxification in females than males. Acrolein exposure changed 174 metabolites in males but only 50 in females. Metabolic process assessment identified higher circulating free-fatty acids, glycerols, and other lipids in male but not female rats exposed to acrolein. In males, acrolein also increased branched-chain amino acids, which was linked with metabolites of nitrogen imbalance within the gut microbiome. The contribution of neuroendocrine stress was evident by increased corticosterone in males but not females. Male liver transcriptomics revealed acrolein-induced over-representation of lipid and protein metabolic processes, and pathway alterations including Sirtuin, insulin-receptor, acute-phase, and glucocorticoid signaling. In sum, acute acrolein inhalation resulted in sex-specific serum metabolomic and liver transcriptomic derangement, which may have connections to chronic metabolic-related diseases.

Influence of Mild Chronic Stress and Social Isolation on Acute Ozone-Induced Alterations in Stress Biomarkers and Brain-Region-Specific Gene Expression in Male Wistar-Kyoto Rats

Individuals with psychosocial stress often experience an exaggerated response to air pollutants. Ozone (O3) exposure has been associated with the activation of the neuroendocrine stress-response system. We hypothesized that preexistent mild chronic stress plus social isolation (CS), or social isolation (SI) alone, would exacerbate the acute effects of O3 exposure on the circulating adrenal-derived stress hormones, and the expression of the genes regulating glucocorticoid stress signaling via an altered stress adaptation in a brain-region-specific manner. Male Wistar-Kyoto rats (5 weeks old) were socially isolated, plus were subjected to either CS (noise, confinement, fear, uncomfortable living, hectic activity, and single housing), SI (single housing only, restricted handling and no enrichment) or no stress (NS; double housing, frequent handling and enrichment provided) for 8 weeks. The rats were then exposed to either air or O3 (0.8 ppm for 4 h), and the samples were collected immediately after. The indicators of sympathetic and hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) activation (i.e., epinephrine, corticosterone, and lymphopenia) increased with O3 exposure, but there were no effects from CS or SI, except for the depletion of serum BDNF. CS and SI revealed small changes in brain-region-specific glucocorticoid-signaling-associated markers of gene expression in the air-exposed rats (hypothalamic Nr3c1, Nr3c2 Hsp90aa1, Hspa4 and Cnr1 inhibition in SI; hippocampal HSP90aa1 increase in SI; and inhibition of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) Cnr1 in CS). Gene expression across all brain regions was altered by O3, reflective of glucocorticoid signaling effects, such as Fkbp5 in NS, CS and SI. The SI effects on Fkbp5 were greatest for SI in BNST. O3 increased Cnr2 expression in the hypothalamus and olfactory bulbs of the NS and SI groups. O3, in all stress conditions, generally inhibited the expression of Nr3c1 in all brain regions, Nr3c2 in the hippocampus and hypothalamus and Bdnf in the hippocampus. SI, in general, showed slightly greater O3-induced changes when compared to NS and CS. Serum metabolomics revealed increased sphingomyelins in the air-exposed SI and O3-exposed NS, with underlying SI dampening some of the O3-induced changes. These results suggest a potential link between preexistent SI and acute O3-induced increases in the circulating adrenal-derived stress hormones and brain-region-specific gene expression changes in glucocorticoid signaling, which may partly underlie the stress dynamic in those with long-term SI.

Short-term exposure to ozone and ECG abnormalities in China: A nationwide longitudinal study

Ambient ozone (O3) pollution has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have addressed the effect of O3 exposure on electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities, a subclinical indicator of early damage to the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to examine the association between short-term exposure to O3 and ECG abnormalities. We included 102,027 visits of 47,290 participants over 40 years old who had a normal ECG at baseline and then visited again at least once from the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS). Short-term ozone exposure concentrations were measured as averages of maximum daily 8-h O3 concentrations over the two weeks prior to ECG measurements. The generalized estimation equations models were used to evaluate the association between O3 exposure and ECG abnormalities. For every 10 µg/m3 increment in short-term O3 concentration, the odds ratio of any ECG abnormality was 1.055 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.045-1.064). For ECG-diagnosed cardiac arrhythmia, the odds ratio was 1.062 (95% CI 1.052-1.072). A nonlinear analysis showed a sublinear relationship between O3 exposure and risk for ECG abnormalities. The association between O3 exposure and ECG abnormalities varied by subpopulation. Our study provided new epidemiological evidence on the association between short-term O3 exposure and ECG abnormalities. There is an urgent need to control ambient O3 pollution to prevent cardiovascular events.

Effects of Prolonged Exposure to Air Pollution and Neighborhood Disadvantage on Self-Rated Health among Adults in the United States: Evidence from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics

BACKGROUND

Although overall air quality has improved in the United States, air pollution remains unevenly distributed across neighborhoods, producing disproportionate environmental burdens for minoritized and socioeconomically disadvantaged residents for whom greater exposure to other structurally rooted neighborhood stressors is also more frequent. These interrelated dynamics and layered vulnerabilities each have well-documented associations with physical and psychological health outcomes; however, much remains unknown about the joint effects of environmental hazards and neighborhood socioeconomic factors on self-reported health status.

OBJECTIVES

We examined the nexus of air pollution exposure, neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, and self-rated health (SRH) among adults in the United States.

METHODS

This observational study used individual-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics merged with contextual information, including neighborhood socioeconomic and air pollution data at the census tract and census block levels, spanning the period of 1999-2015. We estimated ordinary least squares regression models predicting SRH by 10-y average exposures to fine particulate matter [particles ≤ 2.5 μ m in aerodynamic diameter (PM 2.5 )] and neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage while controlling for individual-level correlates of health. We also investigated the interaction effects of air pollution and neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage on SRH.

RESULTS

On average, respondents in our sample rated their health as 3.41 on a scale of 1 to 5. Respondents in neighborhoods with higher 10-y average PM 2.5 concentrations or socioeconomic disadvantage rated their health more negatively after controlling for covariates [β = - 0.024 (95% CI: - 0.034 , - 0.014 ); β = - 0.107 (95% CI: - 0.163 , - 0.052 ), respectively]. We also found that the deleterious associations of PM 2.5 exposure with SRH were weaker in the context of greater neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage (β = 0.007 ; 95% CI: 0.002, 0.011).

DISCUSSION

Study results indicate that the effects of air pollution on SRH may be less salient in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods compared with more advantaged areas, perhaps owing to the presence of other more proximate structurally rooted health risks and vulnerabilities in disinvested areas (e.g., lack of economic resources, health access, healthy food options). This intersection may further underscore the importance of meaningful involvement and political power building among community stakeholders on issues concerning the nexus of environmental and socioeconomic justice, particularly in structurally marginalized communities. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP11268.

Body composition modify the association between ambient particulate matter and lung function among asthma patients

The effect of ambient PM10 and PM2.5 on lung function modified by body muscle and adipose tissue is not fully understood at present. Our aims were to investigate the association between seasonal average air pollutants and lung function in asthmatic patients modified by body composition indicators. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 914 doctor-diagnosed asthmatic patients, and performed interaction and stratified analysis using the median values of total body muscle (TBM), total body fat (TBF), and percentage body fat (PBF) as well as body mass index (BMI) =25 as the cutoff points of the high/low body composition groups. The adjusted R2 values of the developed LUR models of PM2.5 and PM10 were 91.4% and 90.5% and also verified by cross-validation, respectively. After adjusting for confounding factors, we found that TBM significantly modified the association between PM10 and lung function among asthma patients (interaction P value <0.05). In the low TBM group, seasonal average concentrations of PM10 estimated by the LUR model increased by 10 μg/m3, and negative associations with lung function indicators were observed. For obese patients with BMI>25 and high TBF, the increase in PM10 was associated with the decrease in lung function. The asthma patients with obesity and low total body muscle were more susceptible to adverse effects of PM10 on lung function.

Sex-specific respiratory and systemic endocrine effects of acute acrolein and trichloroethylene inhalation

Acrolein and trichloroethylene (TCE) are priority hazardous air pollutants due to environmental prevalence and adverse health effects; however, neuroendocrine stress-related systemic effects are not characterized. Comparing acrolein, an airway irritant, and TCE with low irritancy, we hypothesized that airway injury would be linked to neuroendocrine-mediated systemic alterations. Male and female Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed nose-only to air, acrolein or TCE in incremental concentrations over 30 min, followed by 3.5-hr exposure to the highest concentration (acrolein - 0.0, 0.1, 0.316, 1, 3.16 ppm; TCE - 0.0, 3.16, 10, 31.6, 100 ppm). Real-time head-out plethysmography revealed acrolein decreased minute volume and increased inspiratory-time (males>females), while TCE reduced tidal-volume. Acrolein, but not TCE, inhalation increased nasal-lavage-fluid protein, lactate-dehydrogenase activity, and inflammatory cell influx (males>females). Neither acrolein nor TCE increased bronchoalveolar-lavage-fluid injury markers, although macrophages and neutrophils increased in acrolein-exposed males and females. Systemic neuroendocrine stress response assessment indicated acrolein, but not TCE, increased circulating adrenocorticotrophic hormone, and consequently corticosterone, and caused lymphopenia, but only in males. Acrolein also reduced circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone, prolactin, and testosterone in males. In conclusion, acute acrolein inhalation resulted in sex-specific upper respiratory irritation/inflammation and systemic neuroendocrine alterations linked to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes activation, which is critical in mediating extra-respiratory effects.

Meandered and muddled: a systematic review on the impact of air pollution on ocular health

From the years 1970-2023, a systematic overview of the diverse consequences of particulate matter on eye health and a disease classification according to acute, chronic, and genetic are presented using the PubMed, Research Gate, Google Scholar, and Science Direct databases. Various studies on medical aspects correlate with the eye and health. However, from an application perspective, there is limited research on the ocular surface and air pollution. The main objective of the study is to uncover the relationship between eye health and air pollution, particularly particulate matter, along with other external factors acting as aggravators. The secondary goal of the work is to examine the existing models for mimicking human eyes. The study is followed by a questionnaire survey in a workshop, in which the exposure-based investigation was tagged based on their activity. This paper establishes a relationship between particulate matter and its influence on human health, leading to numerous eye diseases like dry eyes, conjunctivitis, myopia, glaucoma, and trachoma. The results of the questionnaire survey indicate that about 68% of the people working in the workshop are symptomatic with tears, blurred vision, and mood swings, while 32% of the people were asymptomatic. Although there are approaches for conducting experiments, the evaluation is not well defined; empirical and numerical solutions for particle deposition on the eye are needed. There prevails a broad gap in the arena of ocular deposition modeling.

Who benefits most from a prenatal HEPA filter air cleaner intervention on childhood cognitive development? The UGAAR randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Air pollution exposure during pregnancy affects children's brain function. Maternal stress and nutrition, socioeconomic status, and the child's sex may modify this relationship.

OBJECTIVE

To identify characteristics of children with the largest increases in full-scale IQ (FSIQ) after their mothers used HEPA filter air cleaners during pregnancy.

METHODS

In this randomized controlled trial we randomly assigned women to receive 1-2 air cleaners or no air cleaners during pregnancy. We analyzed maternal hair samples for cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). When the children were 48 months old, we measured FSIQ with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. We evaluated ten potential modifiers of the intervention-FSIQ relationship using interaction terms in separate regression models. To account for correlations between modifiers, we also used a single regression model containing main effects and intervention x modifier terms for all potential modifiers.

RESULTS

Among 242 mother-child dyads with complete data, the intervention was associated with a 2.3-point increase (95% CI: -1.5, 6.0 points) in mean FSIQ. The intervention improved mean FSIQ among children of mothers in the bottom (5.4 points; 95% CI: -0.8, 11.5) and top (6.1 points; 95% CI: 0.5, 11.8) cortisol tertiles, but not among those whose mothers were in the middle tertile. The largest between-group difference in the intervention's effect was a 7.5-point (95% CI: -0.7, 15.7) larger increase in mean FSIQ among children whose mothers did not take vitamins than among children whose mothers did take vitamins (interaction p-value = 0.07). We also observed larger benefits among children whose mothers did not complete university, and those with lower hair DHEA concentrations, hair cortisol concentrations outside the middle tertile, or more perceived stress.

CONCLUSION

The benefits of reducing air pollution during pregnancy on brain development may be greatest for children whose mothers who do not take vitamins, experience more stress, or have less education.

Toxicological Effects of Secondary Air Pollutants

Secondary air pollutants, originating from gaseous pollutants and primary particulate matter emitted by natural sources and human activities, undergo complex atmospheric chemical reactions and multiphase processes. Secondary gaseous pollutants represented by ozone and secondary particulate matter, including sulfates, nitrates, ammonium salts, and secondary organic aerosols, are formed in the atmosphere, affecting air quality and human health. This paper summarizes the formation pathways and mechanisms of important atmospheric secondary pollutants. Meanwhile, different secondary pollutants' toxicological effects and corresponding health risks are evaluated. Studies have shown that secondary pollutants are generally more toxic than primary ones. However, due to their diverse source and complex generation mechanism, the study of the toxicological effects of secondary pollutants is still in its early stages. Therefore, this paper first introduces the formation mechanism of secondary gaseous pollutants and focuses mainly on ozone's toxicological effects. In terms of particulate matter, secondary inorganic and organic particulate matters are summarized separately, then the contribution and toxicological effects of secondary components formed from primary carbonaceous aerosols are discussed. Finally, secondary pollutants generated in the indoor environment are briefly introduced. Overall, a comprehensive review of secondary air pollutants may shed light on the future toxicological and health effects research of secondary air pollutants.

Air Pollution and Perinatal Mental Health: A Comprehensive Overview

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to summarise the available data about the link between air pollution exposure and the new-onset and severity of psychiatric disorders in pregnant women during the perinatal period.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We selected articles published until June 2022 on PubMed and the Web of Science. Pollutants included were PM_2.5 (particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and smaller), PM₁₀ (particulate matter 10 micrometres and smaller), NO₂ (nitrogen dioxide), O₃ (ozone), SO₂ (sulphur dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), lead, and cadmium. The perinatal period was considered as the time of pregnancy until one year after childbirth.

RESULTS

Nine studies were included; most of them evaluated the association between exposure to air pollutants and the onset of Postpartum Depression (PPD). Two studies showed an association between, respectively, only PM_2.5 and both PM_2.5 and NO₂ exposure and PPD onset 12 months after childbirth, while another study found a significant association between NO₂ exposure and PPD occurrence 6 months after childbirth. PBDE blood levels were associated with more severe depressive symptoms. Lastly, one study observed a link between stressful symptoms and exposure to PM_2.5, PM₁₀ during pregnancy.

CONCLUSION

More comprehensive and uniform studies are required to make a roadmap for future interventions, given the growing relevance of issues such pollution and mental health, particularly during the perinatal period.

The effect of ambient ozone exposure on three types of diabetes: a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Ozone as an air pollutant is gradually becoming a threat to people's health. However, the effect of ozone exposure on risk of developing diabetes, a fast-growing global metabolic disease, remains controversial.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the impact of ambient ozone exposure on the incidence rate of type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes mellitus.

METHOD

We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases before July 9, 2022, to determine relevant literature. Data were extracted after quality evaluation according to the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the agency for healthcare research and quality (AHRQ) standards, and a meta-analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between ozone exposure and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The heterogeneity test, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were performed using Stata 16.0.

RESULTS

Our search identified 667 studies from three databases, 19 of which were included in our analysis after removing duplicate and ineligible studies. Among the remaining studies, three were on T1D, five were on T2D, and eleven were on GDM. The result showed that ozone exposure was positively correlated with T2D [effect size (ES) = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.11] and GDM [pooled odds ratio (OR) = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.03]. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that ozone exposure in the first trimester of pregnancy might raise the risk of GDM. However, no significant association was observed between ozone exposure and T1D.

CONCLUSION

Long-term exposure to ozone may increase the risk of T2D, and daily ozone exposure during pregnancy was a hazard factor for developing GDM. Decreasing ambient ozone pollution may reduce the burden of both diseases.

Intratracheal instillation of respirable particulate matter elicits neuroendocrine activation

OBJECTIVE

Inhalation of ozone activates central sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress axes. While airway neural networks are known to communicate noxious stimuli to higher brain centers, it is not known to what extent responses generated from pulmonary airways contribute to neuroendocrine activation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Unlike inhalational exposures that involve the entire respiratory tract, we employed intratracheal (IT) instillations to expose only pulmonary airways to either soluble metal-rich residual oil fly ash (ROFA) or compressor-generated diesel exhaust particles (C-DEP). Male Wistar-Kyoto rats (12-13 weeks) were IT instilled with either saline, C-DEP or ROFA (5 mg/kg) and necropsied at 4 or 24 hr to assess temporal effects.

RESULTS

IT-instillation of particulate matter (PM) induced hyperglycemia as early as 30-min and glucose intolerance when measured at 2 hr post-exposure. We observed PM- and time-specific effects on markers of pulmonary injury/inflammation (ROFA>C-DEP; 24 hr>4hr) as corroborated by increases in lavage fluid injury markers, neutrophils (ROFA>C-DEP), and lymphocytes (ROFA). Increases in lavage fluid pro-inflammatory cytokines differed between C-DEP and ROFA in that C-DEP caused larger increases in TNF-α whereas ROFA caused larger increases in IL-6. No increases in circulating cytokines occurred. At 4 hr, PM impacts on neuroendocrine activation were observed through depletion of circulating leukocytes, increases in adrenaline (ROFA), and decreases in thyroid-stimulating-hormone, T3, prolactin, luteinizing-hormone, and testosterone. C-DEP and ROFA both increased lung expression of genes involved in acute stress and inflammatory processes. Moreover, small increases occurred in hypothalamic Fkbp5, a glucocorticoid-sensitive gene.

CONCLUSION

Respiratory alterations differed between C-DEP and ROFA, with ROFA inducing greater overall lung injury/inflammation; however, both PM induced a similar degree of neuroendocrine activation. These findings demonstrate neuroendocrine activation after pulmonary-only PM exposure, and suggest the involvement of pituitary- and adrenal-derived hormones.

Ambient PM2.5 exposure and salivary cortisol output during pregnancy in a multi-ethnic urban sample

OBJECTIVES

Evidence from murine research supports that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, leading to elevated circulating glucocorticoid levels. Epidemiologic research examining parallel associations document similar associations. We examined these associations among a diverse sample of pregnant individuals exposed to lower levels of ambient PM2.5.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Participants included pregnant individuals enrolled in the PRogramming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) pre-birth cohort. Daily residential PM2.5 exposure was estimated using a satellite-based spatial-temporal hybrid model. Maternal 3rd trimester salivary cortisol levels were used to calculate several features of the diurnal cortisol rhythm. We used multivariable linear regression to examine PM2.5 during the pre-conception period and during each trimester in relation to cortisol awakening rise (CAR), slope, and area under the curve relative to ground (AUCG).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The average PM2.5 exposure level across pregnancy was 8.13 µg/m3. PM2.5 in each exposure period was positively associated with AUCG, a measure of total cortisol output across the day. We also observed an inverse association between PM2.5 in the 3rd trimester and diurnal slope, indicating a steeper decline in cortisol throughout the day with increasing exposure. We did not detect strong associations between PM2.5 and slope for the other exposure periods or between PM2.5 and CAR for any exposure period.

CONCLUSIONS

In this sample, PM2.5 exposure across the preconception and pregnancy periods was associated with increased cortisol output, even at levels below the U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Annual Standard for PM2.5 of 12.0 µg/m3.

The differential impact of air pollutants on acute urticaria and chronic urticaria: a time series analysis

Several studies have revealed a relationship between short-term exposure to air pollution and the exacerbation of certain skin conditions. This study was developed to expand on these findings by exploring the potential association between exposure to air pollutants including particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and ozone and the incidence of acute and chronic urticaria in Shenyang, China, from 2016 to 2018. Exposure-response relationships between daily mean concentrations of these airborne pollutants and visits to outpatient dermatological clinics for acute urticaria and chronic urticaria were evaluated via a time series analysis approach using a generalized additive model. This analysis revealed that a 10 μg/m³ increase in daily mean O₃_8h concentrations was associated with a 0.36% (95% CI, 0.31-0.41%), 0.35% (95% CI, 0.30-0.40%), and 0.34% (95% CI, 0.29-0.39%) increase in the number of outpatient visits for acute urticaria on that day (lag0), lagging day 1 (lag1), and lagging day 2 (lag2), respectively. O3 levels also had a similar but weaker effect on the frequency of patients seeking outpatient care for chronic urticaria. These analyses also revealed that estimated 0.47% (95% CI, 0.41-0.52%) and 0.46% (95% CI, 0.40-0.51%) increases in dermatological outpatient acute urticaria visits were observed for every 10μg/m3 rise in O3_8h concentrations on cumulative lagging days (lag01 and lag02). Increases in particulate matter (PM_2.5, PM₁₀) levels had a similar cumulative effect on patients with chronic urticaria. In summary, these results suggest that short-term O₃, PM_2.5, and PM₁₀ exposure can increase the risk of acute urticaria and chronic urticaria.

Effects of Ozone on Sickness and Depressive-like Behavioral and Biochemical Phenotypes and Their Regulation by Serum Amyloid A in Mice

Ozone (O₃) is an air pollutant that primarily damages the lungs, but growing evidence supports the idea that O₃ also harms the brain; acute exposure to O₃ has been linked to central nervous system (CNS) symptoms such as depressed mood and sickness behaviors. However, the mechanisms by which O₃ inhalation causes neurobehavioral changes are limited. One hypothesis is that factors in the circulation bridge communication between the lungs and brain following O₃ exposure. In this study, our goals were to characterize neurobehavioral endpoints of O₃ exposure as they relate to markers of systemic and pulmonary inflammation, with a particular focus on serum amyloid A (SAA) and kynurenine as candidate mediators of O₃ behavioral effects. We evaluated O₃-induced dose-, time- and sex-dependent changes in pulmonary inflammation, circulating SAA and kynurenine and its metabolic enzymes, and sickness and depressive-like behaviors in Balb/c and CD-1 mice. We found that 3 parts per million (ppm) O₃, but not 2 or 1 ppm O₃, increased circulating SAA and lung inflammation, which were resolved by 48 h and was worse in females. We also found that indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (Ido1) mRNA expression was increased in the brain and spleen 24 h after 3 ppm O₃ and that kynurenine was increased in blood. Sickness and depressive-like behaviors were observed at all O₃ doses (1-3 ppm), suggesting that behavioral responses to O₃ can occur independently of increased SAA or neutrophils in the lungs. Using SAA knockout mice, we found that SAA did not contribute to O₃-induced pulmonary damage or inflammation, systemic increases in kynurenine post-O₃, or depressive-like behavior but did contribute to weight loss. Together, these findings indicate that acute O₃ exposure induces transient symptoms of sickness and depressive-like behaviors that may occur in the presence or absence of overt pulmonary neutrophilia and systemic increases of SAA. SAA does not appear to contribute to pulmonary inflammation induced by O₃, although it may contribute to other aspects of sickness behavior, as reflected by a modest effect on weight loss.

Social isolation exacerbates acute ozone inhalation induced pulmonary and systemic health outcomes

Psychosocially-stressed individuals might have exacerbated responses to air pollution exposure. Acute ozone exposure activates the neuroendocrine stress response leading to systemic metabolic and lung inflammatory changes. We hypothesized chronic mild stress (CS) and/or social isolation (SI) would cause neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and metabolic phenotypes that would be exacerbated by an acute ozone exposure. Male 5-week-old Wistar-Kyoto rats were randomly assigned into 3 groups: no stress (NS) (pair-housed, regular-handling); SI (single-housed, minimal-handling); CS (single-housed, subjected to mild unpredicted-randomized stressors [restraint-1 h, tilted cage-1 h, shaking-1 h, intermittent noise-6 h, and predator odor-1 h], 1-stressor/day*5-days/week*8-weeks. All animals then 13-week-old were subsequently exposed to filtered-air or ozone (0.8-ppm) for 4 h and immediately necropsied. CS, but not SI animals had increased adrenal weights. However, relative to NS, both CS and SI had lower circulating luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and follicle-stimulating hormone regardless of exposure (SI > CS), and only CS demonstrated lower thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. SI caused more severe systemic inflammation than CS, as evidenced by higher circulating cytokines and cholesterol. Ozone exposure increased urine corticosterone and catecholamine metabolites with no significant stressor effect. Ozone-induced lung injury, and increases in lavage-fluid neutrophils and IL-6, were exacerbated by SI. Ozone severely lowered circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone, prolactin, and luteinizing hormone in all groups and exacerbated systemic inflammation in SI. Ozone-induced increases in serum glucose, leptin, and triglycerides were consistent across stressors; however, increases in cholesterol were exacerbated by SI. Collectively, psychosocial stressors, especially SI, affected the neuroendocrine system and induced adverse metabolic and inflammatory effects that were exacerbated by ozone exposure.

Developmental exposure to indoor flame retardants and hypothalamic molecular signatures: Sex-dependent reprogramming of lipid homeostasis

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of flame-retardant organohalogen pollutants that act as endocrine/neuroendocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In humans, exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFR) or other environmentally persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and novel organophosphate flame retardants has been associated with increasing trends of diabetes and metabolic disease. However, the effects of PBDEs on metabolic processes and their associated sex-dependent features are poorly understood. The metabolic-disrupting effects of perinatal exposure to industrial penta-PBDE mixture, DE-71, on male and female progeny of C57BL/6N mouse dams were examined in adulthood. Dams were exposed to environmentally relevant doses of PBDEs daily for 10 weeks (p.o.): 0.1 (L-DE-71) and 0.4 mg/kg/d (H-DE-71) and offspring parameters were compared to corn oil vehicle controls (VEH/CON). The following lipid metabolism indices were measured: plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, adiponectin, leptin, and liver lipids. L-DE-71 female offspring were particularly affected, showing hypercholesterolemia, elevated liver lipids and fasting plasma leptin as compared to same-sex VEH/CON, while L- and H-DE-71 male F1 only showed reduced plasma adiponectin. Using the quantitative Folch method, we found that mean liver lipid content was significantly elevated in L-DE-71 female offspring compared to controls. Oil Red O staining revealed fatty liver in female offspring and dams. General measures of adiposity, body weight, white and brown adipose tissue (BAT), and lean and fat mass were weighed or measured using EchoMRI. DE-71 did not produce abnormal adiposity, but decreased BAT depots in L-DE-71 females and males relative to same-sex VEH/CON. To begin to address potential central mechanisms of deregulated lipid metabolism, we used RT-qPCR to quantitate expression of hypothalamic genes in energy-regulating circuits that control lipid homeostasis. Both doses of DE-71 sex-dependently downregulated hypothalamic expression of Lepr, Stat3, Mc4r, Agrp, Gshr in female offspring while H-DE-71 downregulated Npy in exposed females relative to VEH/CON. In contrast, exposed male offspring displayed upregulated Stat3 and Mc4r. Intestinal barrier integrity was measured using FITC-dextran since it can lead to systemic inflammation that leads to liver damage and metabolic disease, but was not affected by DE-71 exposure. These findings indicate that maternal transfer of PBDEs disproportionately endangers female offspring to lipid metabolic reprogramming that may exaggerate risk for adult metabolic disease.

Neuroendocrine stress hormones associated with short-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter in individuals with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A panel study in Beijing, China

Air pollution is a major trigger of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dysregulation of the neuroendocrine hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and sympathetic-adrenal medullary (SAM) axes is essential in progression of COPD. However, it is not clear whether air pollution exposure is associated with neuroendocrine responses in individuals with and without COPD. Based on a panel study of 51 stable COPD patients and 78 non-COPD participants with 384 clinical visits, we measured the morning serum levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine as indicators of stress hormones released from the HPA and SAM axes. Ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), and meteorological conditions were continuously monitored at the station from 2 weeks before the start of clinical visits. Linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate associations between differences in stress hormones following an average of 1-14-day exposures to NO₂ and PM_2.5. The average 1 day air pollutant levels prior to the clinical visits were 24.4 ± 14.0 ppb for NO₂ and 55.6 ± 41.5 μg/m³ for PM_2.5. We observed significant increases in CRH, ACTH, and norepinephrine, and decreases in cortisol and epinephrine with interquartile range increase in the average NO₂ and PM_2.5 concentrations in all participants. In the stratified analyses, we identified significant between-group difference in epinephrine following NO₂ exposure in individuals with and without COPD. These results may suggest the susceptibility of COPD patients to the neuroendocrine responses associated with short-term air pollution exposure.

Oxidative Stress, Cytotoxic and Inflammatory Effects of Urban Ultrafine Road-Deposited Dust from the UK and Mexico in Human Epithelial Lung (Calu-3) Cells

Road-deposited dust (RD) is a pervasive form of particulate pollution identified (typically via epidemiological or mathematical modelling) as hazardous to human health. Finer RD particle sizes, the most abundant (by number, not mass), may pose greater risk as they can access all major organs. Here, the first in vitro exposure of human lung epithelial (Calu-3) cells to 0−300 µg/mL of the ultrafine (<220 nm) fraction of road dust (UF-RDPs) from three contrasting cities (Lancaster and Birmingham, UK, and Mexico City, Mexico) resulted in differential oxidative, cytotoxic, and inflammatory responses. Except for Cd, Na, and Pb, analysed metals were most abundant in Mexico City UF-RDPs, which were most cytotoxic. Birmingham UF-RDPs provoked greatest ROS release (only at 300 µg/mL) and greatest increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Lancaster UF-RDPs increased cell viability. All three UF-RDP samples stimulated ROS production and pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Mass-based PM limits seem inappropriate given the location-specific PM compositions and health impacts evidenced here. A combination of new, biologically relevant metrics and localised regulations appears critical to mitigating the global pandemic of health impacts of particulate air pollution and road-deposited dust.

Association between Short-Term Exposure to Ozone and Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

At present, ambient air pollution poses a significant threat to patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The heart rate variability (HRV) is a marker of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, and it is related to air pollution and cardiovascular disease. There is, however, considerable disagreement in the literature regarding the association between ozone (O₃) and HRV. To further investigate the effects of short-term exposure to O₃ on HRV, we conducted the first meta-analysis of relevant studies. The percentage change of HRV indicator(s) is the effect estimate extracted for the quantitative analysis in this study. In our meta-analysis, per 10 ppb increase in O₃ was significantly associated with decreases in the time-domain measurements, for standard deviation of the normal-to-normal (NN) interval (SDNN) -1.11% (95%CI: -1.35%, -0.87%) and for root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) -3.26% (95%CI: -5.42%, -1.09%); in the frequency-domain measurements, for high frequency (HF) -3.01% (95%CI: -4.66%, -1.35%) and for low frequency (LF) -2.14% (95%CI: -3.83%, -0.45%). This study showed short-term exposure to O₃ was associated with reduced HRV indicators in adults, which suggested that the cardiac autonomic nervous system might be affected after O₃ exposure, contributing to the association between O₃ exposure and CVD risk.

Increased allostatic load associated with ambient air pollution acting as a stressor: Cross-sectional evidence from the China multi-ethnic cohort study

BACKGROUND

Allostatic load measures the cumulative biological burden imposed by chronic stressors. Emerging experimental evidence supports that air pollution acting as a stressor activates the neuroendocrine system and then produces multi-organ effects, leading to allostatic load. However, relevant epidemiological evidence is limited.

OBJECTIVES

We aim to explore the relationships between chronic exposure to ambient air pollution (PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and O₃) and allostatic load in Chinese adults.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 85,545 participants aged 30-79 from the baseline data of the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC). Ambient air pollution levels were evaluated by a satellite-based random forest approach. The previous three-year average exposure concentrations were calculated for each participant based on the residential address. The outcome allostatic load was identified through the sum of the sex-specific scores of twelve biomarkers belonging to four major categories: cardiovascular, metabolic, anthropometric, and inflammatory parameters. We performed statistical analysis using a doubly robust approach which relies on inverse probability weighting and outcome model to adjust for confounding.

RESULTS

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution was significantly associated with an increased risk of allostatic load, with relative risk (95% confidence interval) of 1.040 (1.024, 1.057), 1.029 (1. 018, 1. 039), and 1.087 (1.074, 1.101) for each 10 μg/m³ increase in ambient PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and O₃, respectively. No significant relationship was observed between chronic exposure to PM₁ and allostatic load. The associations between air pollution and allostatic load are modified by some intrinsic factors and non-chemical stressors. The people with older, minority, lower education, and lower-income levels had a significantly higher allostatic load induced by air pollution.

CONCLUSIONS

Chronic exposure to ambient PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and O₃ may increase the allostatic load. This finding provides epidemiological evidence that air pollution may be a chronic stressor, leading to widespread physiological burdens.

The contribution of the neuroendocrine system to adaption after repeated daily ozone exposure in rats

Ozone-induced lung injury/inflammation dissipates despite continued exposure for 3 or more days; however, the mechanisms of adaptation/habituation remain unclear. Since ozone effects are mediated through adrenal-derived stress hormones, which also regulate longevity of centrally-mediated stress response, we hypothesized that ozone-adaptation is linked to diminution of neuroendocrine stress-axes activation and glucocorticoid levels. Male Wistar-Kyoto-rats (12-week-old) were injected with vehicle or a therapeutically-relevant dexamethasone dose (0.01-mg/kg/day; intraperitoneal) for 1-month to determine if suppression of glucocorticoid signaling was linked to adaptation. Vehicle- and dexamethasone-treated rats were exposed to air or 0.8-ppm ozone, 4 h/day × 2 or 4 days to assess the impacts of acute exposure and adaptation, respectively. Dexamethasone reduced thymus and spleen weights, circulating lymphocytes, corticosterone and increased insulin. Ozone increased lavage-fluid protein and neutrophils and decreased circulating lymphocytes at day-2 but not day-4. Ozone-induced hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance and inhibition of beta-cell insulin release occurred at day-1 but not day-3. Ozone depleted circulating prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing-hormone at day-2 but not day-4, suggesting central mediation of adaptation. Adrenal epinephrine biosynthesis gene, Pnmt, was induced after ozone exposure at both timepoints. However, genes involved in glucocorticoid biosynthesis were induced after day-2 but not day-4, suggesting that acute 1- or 2-day ozone-mediated glucocorticoid increase elicits feedback inhibition to dampen hypothalamic stimulation of ACTH release in response to repeated subsequent ozone exposures. Although dexamethasone pretreatment affected circulating insulin, lymphocytes and adrenal genes, it had modest effect on ozone adaptation. In conclusion, ozone adaptation likely involves lack of hypothalamic response due to reduced availability of circulating glucocorticoids.

Long-term commuting times and air quality relationship to COVID-19 in São Paulo

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic is an unprecedented global health crisis and the effects may be related to environmental and socio-economic factors. In São Paulo, Brazil, the first death occurred in March 2020 and since then the numbers have grown to 175 new deaths per day in April 2021, positioning the city as the epicenter of the number of cases and deaths in Brazil. São Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world with more than 12 million inhabitants, a fleet of about 8 million vehicles and frequent pollutant concentrations above recommended values. Social inequalities are evident in the municipality, similarly to other cities in the world. This paper focuses on transportation activities related to air pollution and associated with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases especially on people who developed comorbidities during their whole life. This study relates travel trip data to air quality analysis and expanded to COVID-19 disease. This work studied the relationship of deaths in São Paulo due to COVID-19 with demographic density, with family income, with the use of public transport and with atmospheric pollution for the period between March 17th, 2020 and April 29th, 2021. The main results showed that generally passenger kilometers traveled, commuting times and air quality related diseases increase with residential distance from the city center, and thus, with decreasing residential density. PM_2.5 concentrations are positively correlated with COVID-19 deaths, regions with high urban densities have higher numbers of deaths and long-distance frequent trips can contribute to spread of the disease.

How exposure to chronic stress contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes: A complexity science approach

Chronic stress contributes to the onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D), yet the underlying etiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Responses to stress are influenced by earlier experiences, sex, emotions and cognition, and involve a complex network of neurotransmitters and hormones, that affect multiple biological systems. In addition, the systems activated by stress can be altered by behavioral, metabolic and environmental factors. The impact of stress on metabolic health can thus be considered an emergent process, involving different types of interactions between multiple variables, that are driven by non-linear dynamics at different spatiotemporal scales. To obtain a more comprehensive picture of the links between chronic stress and T2D, we followed a complexity science approach to build a causal loop diagram (CLD) connecting the various mediators and processes involved in stress responses relevant for T2D pathogenesis. This CLD could help develop novel computational models and formulate new hypotheses regarding disease etiology.

The impact of social disadvantage on autonomic physiology of latinx adolescents: The role of environmental risks

The experience of poverty embodies complex, multidimensional stressors that may adversely affect physiological and psychological domains of functioning. Compounded by racial/ethnic discrimination, the financial aspect of family poverty typically coincides with additional social and physical environmental risks such as pollution exposure, housing burden, elevated neighborhood unemployment, and lower neighborhood education levels. In this study, we investigated the associations of multidimensional social disadvantage throughout adolescence with autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning at 17 years. Two hundred and twenty nine low-income Mexican-American adolescents (48.6% female) and their parents were assessed annually between the ages of 10 and 16. Participants' census tracts were matched with corresponding annual administrative data of neighborhood housing burden, education, unemployment, drinking water quality, and fine particulate matter. We combined measures of adolescents' electrodermal response and respiratory sinuses arrhythmia at rest and during a social exclusion challenge (Cyberball) to use as ANS indices of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, respectively. Controlling for family income-to-needs, youth exposed to greater cumulative water and air pollution from ages 10-16 displayed altered patterns of autonomic functioning at rest and during the social challenge. Conversely, youth living in areas with higher housing burden displayed healthy patterns of autonomic functioning. Altogether, results suggest that toxin exposure in youths' physical environments disrupts the ANS, representing a plausible mechanism by which pollutants and social disadvantage influence later physical and mental health.

Personal ozone exposure and stress hormones in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal and sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axes

BACKGROUND

The effect of ozone exposure on neuroendocrine responses in humans has not been fully studied.

METHODS

We conducted a longitudinal panel study with four rounds of visits among 43 college students in Shanghai, China, from May to October 2016. For each visit, we monitored personal real-time ozone exposure for consecutive 3 days (from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. each day), followed by blood sample collection. We measured serum levels of three hormones in the hypothalamus-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis, including corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol, and three catacholamines indicating sympathetic-adrenal-medullary (SAM) axis activation, including adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine. We applied linear mixed-effect models to evaluate the associations between ozone exposure and these neurohormones and further compared models using personal and fixed-site ozone measurements.

MAIN RESULTS

At lag 0-8 h, personal ozone exposure ranged from 4.5 ppb to 104.3 ppb with an average of 21.0 ± 14.7 ppb, which was approximately half of the ambient ozone concentration. Per 10-ppb increase in personal ozone exposure (lag 0-8 h) was associated with increases of 5.60% [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.30%, 9.01%] in CRH, 5.91% (95% CI: 0.55%, 11.56%) in cortisol, and 10.13% (95% CI: 2.75%, 18.05%) in noradrenaline, whereas associated with a 12.15% (95% CI: 1.23%, 21.87%) decrease in dopamine. Overall, models using personal ozone measurements yielded larger effect estimates and better model fits than models using fixed-site measurements.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to low levels of ozone may lead to activation of the HPA and SAM axes.

Impact of ozone exposure on heart rate variability and stress hormones: A randomized-crossover study

The biological mechanisms underlying the associations between atmospheric ozone exposure and adverse cardiometabolic outcomes are yet to be identified. Imbalanced autonomic nervous system (ANS) as well as activations of the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes are among possible early biological responses triggered by ozone, and may eventually lead to cardiometabolic abnormalities. To determine whether acute ozone exposure causes ANS imbalance and increases the secretion of neuroendocrine stress hormones, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, under controlled 2-hour exposure to either ozone (200 ppb) or clean air with intermittent exercise among 22 healthy young adults. Here we found that, compared to clean air exposure, acute ozone exposure significantly decreased the high-frequency band of heart rate variability, even after adjusting for heart rate and pre-exposure to ambient air pollutants and meteorological factors. Ozone exposure also significantly increased the serum levels of stress hormones, including corticotrophin-releasing factor, adrenocorticotropic hormone, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. Metabolomics analysis showed that acute ozone exposure led to alterations in stress hormones, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and energy metabolism. Our results suggest that acute ozone exposure may trigger ANS imbalance and activate the HPA and SAM axes, offering potential biological explanations for the adverse cardiometabolic effects following acute ozone exposure.

Prenatal Pollutant Exposures and Hypothalamic Development: Early Life Disruption of Metabolic Programming

Environmental contaminants in ambient air pollution pose a serious risk to long-term metabolic health. Strong evidence shows that prenatal exposure to pollutants can significantly increase the risk of Type II Diabetes (T2DM) in children and all ethnicities, even without the prevalence of obesity. The central nervous system (CNS) is critical in regulating whole-body metabolism. Within the CNS, the hypothalamus lies at the intersection of the neuroendocrine and autonomic systems and is primarily responsible for the regulation of energy homeostasis and satiety signals. The hypothalamus is particularly sensitive to insults during early neurodevelopmental periods and may be susceptible to alterations in the formation of neural metabolic circuitry. Although the precise molecular mechanism is not yet defined, alterations in hypothalamic developmental circuits may represent a leading cause of impaired metabolic programming. In this review, we present the current knowledge on the links between prenatal pollutant exposure and the hypothalamic programming of metabolism.

Prenatal ambient air pollution and maternal depression at 12 months postpartum in the MADRES pregnancy cohort

BACKGROUND

Depression is the leading cause of mental health-related morbidity and affects twice as many women as men. Hispanic/Latina women in the US have unique risk factors for depression and they have lower utilization of mental health care services. Identifying modifiable risk factors for maternal depression, such as ambient air pollution, is an urgent public health priority. We aimed to determine whether prenatal exposure to ambient air pollutants was associated with maternal depression at 12 months after childbirth.

METHODS

One hundred eighty predominantly low-income Hispanic/Latina women participating in the ongoing MADRES cohort study in Los Angeles, CA were followed from early pregnancy through 12 months postpartum through a series of phone questionnaires and in-person study visits. Daily prenatal ambient pollutant estimates of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) were assigned to participant residences using inverse-distance squared spatial interpolation from ambient monitoring data. Exposures were averaged for each trimester and across pregnancy. The primary outcome measure was maternal depression at 12 months postpartum, as reported on the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. We classified each participant as depressed (n = 29) or not depressed (n = 151) based on the suggested cutoff of 16 or above (possible scores range from 0 to 60) and fitted logistic regression models, adjusting for potential confounders.

RESULTS

We found over a two-fold increased odds of depression at 12 months postpartum associated with second trimester NO2 exposure (OR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.41-4.89) and pregnancy average NO2 (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.13-3.69). Higher second trimester PM2.5 exposure also was associated with increased depression at 12 months postpartum (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.01-2.42). The effect for second trimester PM10 was similar and was borderline significant (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 0.97-2.56).

CONCLUSIONS

In a low-income cohort consisting of primarily Hispanic/Latina women in urban Los Angeles, we found that prenatal ambient air pollution, especially mid-pregnancy NO2 and PM2.5, increased the risk of depression at 12 months after childbirth. These results underscore the need to better understand the contribution of modifiable environmental risk factors during potentially critical exposure periods.

Structural racism and its pathways to asthma and atopic dermatitis

Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people in the United States experience a disproportionate burden of asthma and atopic dermatitis. The study of these disease disparities has focused on proximal socioenvironmental exposures and on the biomechanistic (including genetic) differences between racial and ethnic groups. Although biomedical research in allergy and immunology stands to benefit from the inclusion of diverse study populations, the narrow focus on biologic mechanisms disregards the complexity of interactions across biologic and structural factors, including the effects of structural racism. Structural racism is the totality of ways in which society fosters discrimination by creating and reinforcing inequitable systems through intentional policies and practices sanctioned by government and institutions. It is embedded across multiple levels, including the economic, educational, health care, and judicial systems, which are manifested in inequity in the physical and social environment. In this review, we present a conceptual framework and pull from the literature to demonstrate how structural racism is a root cause of atopic disease disparities by way of residential segregation, socioeconomic position, and mass incarceration, which may lead to aberrations in the innate and adaptive immune response and the augmentation of physiologic stress responses, contributing to a disproportionate disease burden for racial and ethnic populations.

Long-term residential exposure to air pollution is associated with hair cortisol concentration and differential leucocyte count in Flemish adolescent boys

BACKGROUND

Exposure to air pollution and traffic noise are associated with adverse health outcomes in adolescents. Chronic endocrine stress and systemic inflammation have been hypothesized to underlie the adverse health effects. Simultaneous assessment of inflammation and chronic endocrine stress in epidemiological studies is lacking. The aim of the study was to investigate biomarkers of chronic endocrine stress and inflammation in relation to long-term residential exposure to air pollution and traffic noise in adolescents.

METHODS

In Flemish adolescents (14-15 years), we determined hair cortisol concentration (HCC) as a chronic stress biomarker in 3-cm scalp-near hair sections (n = 395), and leucocyte and leucocyte subtype counts (neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes) as inflammatory biomarkers in peripheral blood (n = 385). Daily particulate matter (PM_2.5, PM₁₀), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and black carbon (BC) concentrations were modelled at the residential address and averaged over 3-month and 1-year periods prior to sampling. Residential traffic noise level was estimated and classified in 5 dB intervals. Sex-specific associations between residential exposures and effect biomarkers were studied using linear regression models, adjusted for a priori selected covariates.

RESULTS

In boys, HCC increased with a factor 1.30 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.54) for an increase in 1-year mean NO₂ from the 25th to 75th percentile (p75/p25), after adjustment for age, BMI, personal and neighborhood socioeconomic status. The corresponding estimate for PM₁₀ was 1.24 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.51). Total leucocyte count in boys, adjusted for the aforementioned covariates and recent health complaints, was positively associated with PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂ and BC. In particular, the neutrophil count increased with a factor 1.11 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.19) for a (p75/p25)-factor increase in 1-year mean BC, corresponding estimates for PM_2.5, PM₁₀ and NO₂ were 1.10 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.19), 1.10 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.20) and 1.08 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.16). Lymphocyte count increased with a factor 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.10) for a (p75/p25)-factor increase in 1-year mean NO₂. Similar results were observed for 3-month mean exposures. Results were robust to adjustment for recent air pollution exposure. In girls, air pollutants were not associated with HCC or differential leucocyte count. Residential traffic noise level was not associated with HCC or leucocyte counts in boys nor girls.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term residential exposure to air pollutants was positively associated with chronic endocrine stress and inflammation in adolescent boys, not in girls. This study may contribute to a better understanding of the early pathophysiological changes that may underlie adverse health effects of air pollution exposure in adolescents.

Association between short-term exposure to particulate matter air pollution and outcomes of assisted reproduction technology in Lombardy, Italy: A retrospective cohort study

The harmful effect of polluted air on spontaneous fertility has been consistently reported. However, the specific pollutants involved in determining this effect are still to be clarified. The study of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) populations is particularly helpful in this context since it allows to monitor the key events of the reproductive process. We analyzed the medical records of 2122 patients who underwent fresh or frozen ART cycles during 2014-2017 in the Lombardy region, north-west Italy. Each subject was assigned the daily PM₁₀ estimates concentration, at the municipality of residence, during the induction of multiple follicular growth. A multivariable linear regression model with a repeated-measures design was used to estimate the association between short-term exposure to PM₁₀ and ART outcomes, A reduction in the number of retrieved oocytes in association with 10 μg/m³ increment of the pollutant estimated at 13-14 days before oocyte retrieval (Day 0) and a decrease in the percentage of metaphase II oocytes for 1-week and 2-weeks mean exposure before day 0 were observed. For cumulative pregnancies, a significant lag time change effect for PM₁₀ exposure (Day -9-0) has been detected, by means of multivariable logistic regression models. An increase in PM₁₀ exposure was associated with a decrease in clinical and ongoing pregnancies while a decrease in PM₁₀ exposure was associated with a significant increase in pregnancy rates. In a population living in a highly polluted area in Italy, we added suggestive evidence of a negative association between ART outcomes and PM₁₀ exposure after controlling for known risk factors for ART success rate.

Human risk assessment of inhaled irritants: Role of sensory stimulations from spatially separated nociceptors

Contemporary approaches to human health risk assessment for respiratory tract irritants are variable and controversial. This manuscript provides an in-depth analysis and assessment of the applicability of the classical respiratory depression 50 % (RD₅₀) assay with focus on the Log-linear extrapolation of the non-sensory irritant threshold (RD₀ or RD₁₀) relative to the contemporary Point of Departure (POD) U.S.-EPA benchmark approach. Three prototypic volatile chemically reactive irritants are used to exemplify the pros and cons of this alternative approach. These irritants differ in physicochemical properties affecting water-solubility and lipophilicity. Depending on these variables, a vapor may preferentially be retained in the extrathoracic region (ET), the tracheobronchial region (TB), and the pulmonary region (PU); although a smooth transition between these regions occurs at increasingly high concentrations. Each region has its specific nociceptors sensing irritants and regional-specific response to injury. The alternative approach using rats identified the chemical-specific critical region of respiratory tract injury. Statistically derived PODs on ET-TB related sensory irritation provide important information for ET-TB irritants but not for PU irritants. The POD of ET-TB irritants from acute and repeated studies decreased substantially. In summary, statistically derived PODs improve the risk assessment of respiratory tract irritants; however, those from repeated exposures should be given preference to those from acute exposures.

Lipid changes in extrapulmonary organs and serum of rats after chronic exposure to ambient fine particulate matter

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) is able to pass through the respiratory barrier to enter the circulatory system and can consequently spread to the whole body to cause toxicity. Although our previous studies have revealed significantly altered levels of phosphorylcholine-containing lipids in the lungs of rats after chronic inhalation exposure to PM_2.5, the effects of PM_2.5 on phosphorylcholine-containing lipids in the extrapulmonary organs have not yet been elucidated. In this study, we examined the lipid effects of chronic PM_2.5 exposure on various organs and serum by using a rat inhalation model followed by a mass spectrometry-based lipidomic approach. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were continuously exposed at the whole body level to nonfiltered and nonconcentrated ambient air from the outside environment of Taipei city for 8 months, while the control rats inhaled filtered air simultaneously. After exposure, serum samples and various organs, including the testis, pancreas, heart, liver, kidney, spleen, and epididymis, were collected for lipid extraction and analysis to examine the changes in phosphorylcholine-containing lipids after exposure. The results from the partial least squares discriminant analysis models demonstrated that the lipid profiles in the PM_2.5 exposure group were different from those in the control group in the rat testis, pancreas, heart, liver, kidney and serum. The greatest PM_2.5-induced lipid effects were observed in the testes. Decreased lyso-phosphatidylcholines (PCs) as well as increased unsaturated diacyl-PCs and sphingomyelins in the testes may be related to maintaining the membrane integrity of spermatozoa, antioxidation, and cell signaling. Additionally, our results showed that decreased PC(16:0/18:1) was observed in both the serum and testes. In conclusion, exposure to chronic environmental concentrations of PM_2.5 caused lipid perturbation, especially in the testes of rats. This study highlighted the susceptibility of the testes and suggested possible molecular events for future study.

Oxidant-induced epithelial alarmin pathway mediates lung inflammation and functional decline following ultrafine carbon and ozone inhalation co-exposure

Environmental inhalation exposures are inherently mixed (gases and particles), yet regulations are still based on single toxicant exposures. While the impacts of individual components of environmental pollution have received substantial attention, the impact of inhalation co-exposures is poorly understood. Here, we mechanistically investigated pulmonary inflammation and lung function decline after inhalation co-exposure and individual exposures to ozone (O₃) and ultrafine carbon black (CB). Environmentally/occupationally relevant lung deposition levels in mice were achieved after inhalation of stable aerosols with similar aerodynamic and mass median distributions. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy detected increased surface oxygen contents on particles in co-exposure aerosols. Compared with individual exposures, co-exposure aerosols produced greater acellular and cellular oxidants detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and in vivo immune-spin trapping (IST), as well as synergistically increased lavage neutrophils, lavage proteins and inflammation related gene/protein expression. Co-exposure induced a significantly greater respiratory function decline compared to individual exposure. A synthetic catalase-superoxide dismutase mimetic (EUK-134) significantly blunted lung inflammation and respiratory function decline confirming the role of oxidant imbalance. We identified a significant induction of epithelial alarmin (thymic stromal lymphopoietin-TSLP)-dependent interleukin-13 pathway after co-exposure, associated with increased mucin and interferon gene expression. We provided evidence of interactive outcomes after air pollution constituent co-exposure and identified a key mechanistic pathway that can potentially explain epidemiological observation of lung function decline after an acute peak of air pollution. Developing and studying the co-exposure scenario in a standardized and controlled fashion will enable a better mechanistic understanding of how environmental exposures result in adverse outcomes.

The Role of Hepatic Vagal Tone in Ozone-Induced Metabolic Dysfunction in the Liver

Air pollution has been associated with metabolic diseases and hepatic steatosis-like changes. We have shown that ozone alters liver gene expression for metabolic processes through neuroendocrine activation. This study aimed to further characterize ozone-induced changes and to determine the impact of hepatic vagotomy (HV) which reduces parasympathetic influence. Twelve-week-old male Wistar-Kyoto rats underwent HV or sham surgery 5-6 days before air or ozone exposure (0 or 1 ppm; 4 h/day for 1 or 2 days). Ozone-induced lung injury, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, and increases in circulating cholesterol, triglycerides, and leptin were similar in rats with HV and sham surgery. However, decreases in circulating insulin and increased HDL and LDL were observed only in ozone-exposed HV rats. Ozone exposure resulted in changed liver gene expression in both sham and HV rats (sham > HV), however, HV did not change expression in air-exposed rats. Upstream target analysis revealed that ozone-induced transcriptomic changes were similar to responses induced by glucocorticoid-mediated processes in both sham and HV rats. The directionality of ozone-induced changes reflecting cellular response to stress, metabolic pathways, and immune surveillance was similar in sham and HV rats. However, pathways regulating cell-cycle, regeneration, proliferation, cell growth, and survival were enriched by ozone in a directionally opposing manner between sham and HV rats. In conclusion, parasympathetic innervation modulated ozone-induced liver transcriptional responses for cell growth and regeneration without affecting stress-mediated metabolic changes. Thus, impaired neuroendocrine axes and parasympathetic innervation could collectively contribute to adverse effects of air pollutants on the liver.

Emerging challenges of air pollution and particulate matter in China, India, and Pakistan and mitigating solutions

This study examines point and non-point sources of air pollution and particulate matter and their associated socioeconomic and health impacts in South Asian countries, primarily India, China, and Pakistan. The legislative frameworks, policy gaps, and targeted solutions are also scrutinized. The major cities in these countries have surpassed the permissible limits defined by WHO for sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide. As a result, they are facing widespread health problems, disabilities, and causalities at extreme events. Populations in these countries are comparatively more prone to air pollution effects because they spend more time in the open air, increasing their likelihood of exposure to air pollutants. The elevated level of air pollutants and their long-term exposure increases the susceptibility to several chronic/acute diseases, i.e., obstructive pulmonary diseases, acute respiratory distress, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. More in-depth spatial-temporal air pollution monitoring studies in China, India, and Pakistan are recommended. The study findings suggest that policymakers at the local, national, and regional levels should devise targeted policies by considering all the relevant parameters, including the country's economic status, local meteorological conditions, industrial interests, public lifestyle, and national literacy rate. This approach will also help design and implement more efficient policies which are less likely to fail when brought into practice.

Effects of air pollution exposure on social behavior: a synthesis and call for research

BACKGROUND

There is a growing literature from both epidemiologic and experimental animal studies suggesting that exposure to air pollution can lead to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we suggest that effects of air pollutant exposure on the brain may be even broader, with the potential to affect social decision-making in general.

METHODS

We discuss how the neurobiological substrates of social behavior are vulnerable to air pollution, then briefly present studies that examine the effects of air pollutant exposure on social behavior-related outcomes.

RESULTS

Few experimental studies have investigated the effects of air pollution on social behavior and those that have focus on standard laboratory tests in rodent model systems. Nonetheless, there is sufficient evidence to support a critical need for more research.

CONCLUSION

For future research, we suggest a comparative approach that utilizes diverse model systems to probe the effects of air pollution on a wider range of social behaviors, brain regions, and neurochemical pathways.

Acute effects of short-term exposure to ambient air pollution on reproductive hormones in young males of the MARHCS study in China

Air pollution, which is associated with male reproductive health. However, it is unknown the acute effects of ambient air pollutants exposure on male reproductive hormones. The current study, we measured serum levels of reproductive hormone in 2030 blood samples gathered from The Male Reproductive Health in Chongqing College Students (MARHCS) cohort study. We derived a full coverage of ambient air pollutant (PM₁₀, PM_2.5, SO₂, NO₂, CO and O₃) concentrations by employing machine learning algorithms, and used a mixed-effect model to estimate single-day and cumulative effects of air pollutants exposure on serum reproductive hormones. Our results showed that (1) PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 concentrations were positively associated with estradiol (E₂) in both single and cumulative lag days, but were negatively associated with the ratio of Testosterone/E₂ (the T/E₂ ratio). NO₂ was positively associated with estradiol at lag day 2 (95% CI: 0.290, 0.881; corrected P = 0.048) and lag 0-2 days (95% CI: 0.523, 1.337; corrected P = 0.003), with progesterone (P) at lag day 2 and lag day 3 (corrected P < 0.05). There was also a positive association between CO exposure and progesterone at lag day 2. (2) SO₂ was inversely associated with E₂ at lag day 3, 4 and lag 0-4 days, and progesterone at lag day 0, 1, 2 and lag 0-1, 0-2, 0-4 days, but positively associated with the T/E₂ ratio at lag day 3, 4 and lag 0-4 days (corrected P < 0.05). O₃ exposure was negatively associated with E₂ at lag day 3 (95% CI: -0.216, -0.074, corrected P = 0.03). (3) No significant associations were found between the cumulative daily average air pollutant exposure of CO, O₃ and hormone outcomes. This study suggests that short-term exposure to air pollutants may thus alter reproductive hormone levels, especially on serum estradiol, progesterone levels and the T/E₂ ratio.
