Abstract
Throughout pregnancy, the mother's nutritional and mental health significantly influences the kid's long-term growth and wellness. This review's objective is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the literature on the link between pregnancy nutrition and a sound mind and a foetus' growth, considering factors in the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet is crucial for the baby to grow and develop properly during pregnancy. An appropriate diet of significant macronutrients and micronutrients supports good foetal organ development, cognitive function, and immune system resiliency. For instance, studies have linked iron and omega-3 fatty acids to a reduced risk of developmental delays and improved cognitive performance. Contrarily, malnutrition in mothers, such as undernutrition or excessive weight gain, has been connected with negative results, including low birth weight, poor neurodevelopment, and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases in later life. The mother's mental health, including emotional equilibrium and psychological stability, significantly impacts the child's development. Stress, anxiety, and depression experienced by mothers during pregnancy harm the developing foetus and increase the risk of cognitive, behavioural, and emotional difficulties in the offspring. The growing foetus is exposed to high levels of stress hormones due to chronic maternal stress, which might alter the fetus's brain's shape and function. Factors influencing child development outcomes include maternal-infant attachment, breastfeeding start and duration, and general caring practices. A comprehensive approach is critical since new research indicates a synergistic relationship between maternal nutrition and mental health. Inadequate nutritional intake might result from maternal mental health problems that interfere with appetite control and eating habits. On the other hand, inadequate maternal nutrition may raise maternal stress and result in mental health problems. Therefore, integrative therapies focusing on both areas are essential to maximise child development results. In conclusion, maternal nutrition and mental health during pregnancy significantly impact a child's development in various domains. Understanding the complex relationships between maternal nutrition and mental health is necessary to develop effective therapies and promote the most remarkable results for children. Further research is needed to understand better the underlying mechanisms to develop evidence-based recommendations for optimal mother care throughout pregnancy. The need of this review is to know how maternal health, physical or mental affects the child's development and how we can further prevent it by taking precautions during pregnancy.

Abstract
Infection with Schistosoma sp. during pregnancy can cause low birth weight of the newborn. To allow a better differentiation between newborns with low birth weight and those with normal weight, the terms of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), small for gestational age (SGA) or fetal growth restriction (FGR) should be used. FGR describes the relationship between birth weight and gestational age and is defined as the incapability of a fetus to achieve expected growth with birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age. Additional investigations of the proportion of newborns with FGR should obtain more certainty about the effect of praziquantel and schistosomiasis on fetal growth.

Abstract
Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a novel heterogenous group of immunosuppressive cells derived from myeloid progenitors. Their role is well known in tumors and autoimmune diseases. In recent years, the role and function of MDSCs during reproduction have attracted increasing attention. Improving the understanding of their strong association with recurrent implantation failure, pathological pregnancy, and neonatal health has become a focus area in research. In this review, we focus on the interaction between MDSCs and other cell types (immune and non-immune cells) from embryo implantation to postpartum. Furthermore, we discuss the molecular mechanisms that could facilitate the therapeutic targeting of MDSCs. Therefore, this review intends to encourage further research in the field of maternal-fetal interface immunity in order to identify probable pathways driving the accumulation of MDSCs and to effectively target their ability to promote embryo implantation, reduce pathological pregnancy, and increase neonatal health.

Abstract
Maternal lifestyle has been implicated as a predisposing factor in the development of metabolic disorders in adulthood. This lifestyle includes the immediate environment, physical activity and nutrition. Maternal nutrition has direct influence on the developmental programming through biochemical alterations and can lead to modifications in the fetal genome through epigenetic mechanisms. Imbalance in basic micro or macro nutrients due to famine or food deficiency during delicate gestational periods can lead to onset of metabolic syndrome including obesity. A major example is the Dutch famine which led to a serious metabolic disorder in adulthood of affected infants. Notably due to gene variants, individualized responses to nutritional deficiencies are unconventional, therefore intensifying the need to study nutritional genomics during fetal programming. Epigenetic mechanisms can cause hereditary changes without changing the DNA sequence; the major mechanisms include small non-coding RNAs, histone modifications and most stable of all is DNA methylation. The significance association between obesity and DNA methylation is through regulation of genes implicated in lipid and glucose metabolism either directly or indirectly by hypomethylation or hypermethylation. Examples include CPT1A, APOA2, ADRB3 and POMC. Any maternal exposure to malnutrition or overnutrition that can affect genes regulating major metabolic pathways in the fetus, will eventually cause underlying changes that can predispose or cause the onset of metabolic disorder in adulthood. In this review, we examined the interaction between nutrition during gestation and epigenetic programming of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Umbilical cord abnormalities are not rare, and are often associated with structural or chromosomal abnormalities, fetal intrauterine growth restriction, and poor pregnancy outcomes; the latter can be a result of prematurity, placentation deficiency or, implicitly, an increased index of cesarean delivery due to the presence of fetal distress, higher admission to neonatal intensive care, and increased prenatal mortality rates. Even if the incidence of velamentous insertion, vasa praevia and umbilical knots is low, these pathologies increase the fetal morbidity and mortality prenatally and intrapartum. There is a vast heterogeneity among societies’ guidelines regarding the umbilical cord examination. We consider the mandatory introduction of placental cord insertion examination in the first and second trimester to practice guidelines for fetal ultrasound scans. Moreover, during the mid-trimester scan, we recommend a transvaginal ultrasound and color Doppler assessment of the internal cervical os for low-lying placentas, marginal or velamentous cord insertion, and the evaluation of umbilical cord entanglement between the insertion sites whenever it is incidentally found. Based on the pathological description and the neonatal outcome reported for each entity, we conclude our descriptive review by establishing a new, clinically relevant classification of these umbilical cord anomalies.

Abstract
Infants born after fetal growth restriction (FGR)-an obstetric condition defined as the failure to achieve the genetic growth potential-are prone to neurodevelopmental delays, with language being one of the major affected areas. Yet, while verbal comprehension and expressive language impairments have been observed in FGR infants, children and even adults, specific related impairments at birth, such as in the ability to encode the sounds of speech, necessary for language acquisition, remain to be disclosed. Here, we used the frequency-following response (FFR), a brain potential correlate of the neural phase locking to complex auditory stimuli, to explore the encoding of speech sounds in FGR neonates. Fifty-three neonates born with FGR and 48 controls born with weight adequate-for-gestational age (AGA) were recruited. The FFR was recorded to the consonant-vowel stimulus (/da/) during sleep and quantified as the spectral amplitude to the fundamental frequency of the syllable and its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The outcome was available in 45 AGA and 51 FGR neonates, yielding no differences for spectral amplitudes. However, SNR was strongly attenuated in the FGR group compared to the AGA group at the vowel region of the stimulus. These findings suggest that FGR population present a deficit in the neural pitch tracking of speech sounds already present at birth. Our results pave the way for future research on the potential clinical use of the FFR in this population, so that if confirmed, a disrupted FFR recorded at birth may help deriving FGR neonates at risk for postnatal follow-ups.

The effect of prepregnancy body mass index on maternal micronutrient status: a meta-analysis. Sci Rep 2021; 11:18100. Abstract
The relationship between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and maternal micronutrient status is inconsistent and has not received sufficient attention. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of prepregnancy BMI on micronutrient levels in pregnant women. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for articles that contained information on micronutrient levels and prepregnancy BMI. A random-effects model was used to determine the association between prepregnancy BMI and maternal micronutrient status. Sixty-one eligible articles were eventually included, with 83,554 participants. Vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, iron and ferritin were the main micronutrients evaluated in our meta-analysis. Prepregnancy obesity and overweight may lead to an increased risk of micronutrient deficiency, including vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D deficiency, while prepregnancy obesity or overweight may have no significant association with ferritin deficiency. Additionally, the results of the dose-response analyses demonstrated a possible significant inverse correlation between prepregnancy BMI and levels of micronutrient, except for iron and ferritin. Compared with women with normal weight, women who were overweight or obese prepregnancy have lower micronutrient concentrations and are more likely to exhibit micronutrient deficiency during pregnancy, which is harmful to both mothers and neonates.

Abstract
Background Migrant women may have an increased risk of adverse birth outcomes. This study analyses the occurrence of low birth weight, preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction / fetal growth restriction (IUGR/FGR) in pregnant migrants. Method Cross-sectional study of 82 mother-child pairs of pregnant migrants attending medical care in Germany. Results The Median age was 27 years, 49% of patients were of oriental-asian ethnicity and median year of migration was 2015. At least one previous pregnancy was reported in 76% of patients, in 40% the delivery mode was caesarian section. Median gestational age was 39.7 weeks. Preterm birth occurred in 6.1% of pregnancies. Median gestational age for preterm birth was 32.3 weeks. Low birth weight (< 2500 g) occurred in 6.1%. Birth weights below the 10th percentile of birth weight for gestational age were observed in 8.5% of the total cohort. Conclusions Compared to German data no increased occurrence of low birth weight, preterm birth or IUGR/FGR was found. We note that the rate of caesarian section births was higher than in the general population for reasons yet to be identified. The authors propose stratification according to migration status for the national documentation of birth outcomes in Germany. Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a rabbit neurosphere culture to characterize differences in basic processes of neurogenesis induced by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). A novel in vitro neurosphere culture has been established using fresh or frozen neural progenitor cells from newborn (PND0) rabbit brains. After surgical IUGR induction in pregnant rabbits and cesarean section 5 days later, neural progenitor cells from both control and IUGR groups were isolated and directly cultured or frozen at −80°C. These neural progenitor cells spontaneously formed neurospheres after 7 days in culture. The ability of control and IUGR neurospheres to migrate, proliferate, differentiate to neurons, astrocytes, or oligodendrocytes was compared and the possibility to modulate their responses was tested by exposure to several positive and negative controls. Neurospheres obtained from IUGR brains have a significant impairment in oligodendrocyte differentiation, whereas no significant differences are observed in other basic processes of neurogenesis. This impairment can be reverted by in vitro exposure of IUGR neurospheres to thyroid hormone, which is known to play an essential role in white matter maturation in vivo. Our new rabbit neurosphere model and the results of this study open the possibility to test several substances in vitro as neuroprotective candidates against IUGR induced neurodevelopmental damage while decreasing the number of animals and resources and allowing a more mechanistic approach at a cellular functional level.

Abstract
Maternal nutrient restriction impairs placental growth and development, but available evidence suggests that adaptive mechanisms exist, in a subset of nutrient restricted (NR) ewes, that support normal fetal growth and do not result in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). This study utilized Affymetrix GeneChip Bovine and Ovine Genome 1.0 ST Arrays to identify novel placental genes associated with differential fetal growth rates within NR ewes. Singleton pregnancies were generated by embryo transfer and, beginning on Day 35 of pregnancy, ewes received either a 100% National Research Council (NRC) (control-fed group; n = 7) or 50% NRC (NR group; n = 24) diet until necropsy on Day 125. Fetuses from NR ewes were separated into NR non-IUGR (n = 6) and NR IUGR (n = 6) groups based on Day 125 fetal weight for microarray analysis. Of the 103 differentially expressed genes identified, 15 were upregulated and 88 were downregulated in NR non-IUGR compared to IUGR placentomes. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that upregulated gene clusters in NR non-IUGR placentomes associated with cell membranes, receptors, and signaling. Downregulated gene clusters associated with immune response, nutrient transport, and metabolism. Results illustrate that placentomal gene expression in late gestation is indicative of an altered placental immune response, which is associated with enhanced fetal growth, in a subpopulation of NR ewes.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is not a new subject in pregnancy. Nevertheless, this concept has newly begun to be integrated into pregnancy studies. We recognized articles that were published in English from 1977 to 2019 through electronic searches of the Web of Science™ database. The WoS database was searched for all published articles that compared preeclampsia from 1977 to January 2020. About 1469 documents in obstetrics and gynecology areas were analyzed in WoS database. VOSviewer software was employed to visualize the networks. The survey resulted in a 1469 published documents from 1977 to 2020. 'Gratacos' from Spain and 'Cetin' from Italy contributed the most publications. The greatest contribution came from the 'USA' (n = 498), 'Italy' (n = 155), and 'England' (n = 147). Furthermore, our results found that among these journals, the 'AJOG' (n = 318) and the 'Reproductive Sciences' (n = 209) published the largest number of papers. The top 100 most cited papers showed that 30% were reported in the 'AJOG'. About half the articles were published in the last decade and the most common studies were research paper (77%). The co-occurrence and co-citation analysis showed that the study formed four clusters. Finally, the strategic map was designed. We found that there existed an increasing trend in the large amount of publication on IUGR from 1977 to 2020. The number of studies in IUGR has substantially improved in the last decade. Authors from the 'USA' appeared the most proactive in addressing the IUGR area. By studying these articles, we propose important to support not only for grinding the IUGR challenges field but also for designing a new trend in this area.

Abstract
Low birth weight (LBW) can cause lifelong impairments in muscle development and growth. Satellite cells (SC) and their progeny are crucial contributors to myogenic processes. This study provides new data on LBW in piglets combining insights on energy metabolism, muscle capillarization and differences in SC presence and function. To this aim, muscle tissues as well as isolated myogenic cells of 4-day-old German Landrace piglets were analyzed. For the first time two heterogeneous SC subpopulations, which contribute differently to muscle development, were isolated from LBW pigs by Percoll density gradient centrifugation. The muscles of LBW piglets showed a reduced DNA, RNA, and protein content as well as lower activity of the muscle specific enzymes CK, ICDH, and LDH compared to their normal birth weight siblings. We assume that deficits in energy metabolism and capillarization are associated with reduced bioavailability of SC, possibly leading to early exhaustion of the SC reserve cell pool and the cells’ premature differentiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess the maternal characteristics and nutritional status according to body mass index (BMI) at 6-14 weeks of gestation and to examine the relationship between maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy and its impact on neonatal birth weight. METHODS The investigation was conducted from April 2011 to June 2012 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 498 primigravida pregnant women participated in the study; women with known diabetes or previous gestational diabetes (GDM) were excluded. Maternal demographic details, pregnancy history and anthropometric measurements were obtained from the mother at the recruitment (6-14 weeks), 2nd visit between 24 and 28 week of gestation and 3rd visit at delivery. Cord venous blood samples of newborns (n = 138) were collected immediately after delivery for blood glucose, insulin, lipid profile, leptin and micronutrients including serum folate, ferritin, homocysteine, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. RESULTS The prevalence at 6-14 weeks of pregnancy of anemia (Hb, < 11 g/dl), vitamin D deficiency (< 30 nmol/l), vitamin B12 deficiency (< 200 pg/ml), high homocysteine level (> 15 μmol/l), folate deficiency (< 3 ng/ml) and iron deficiency (ferritin < 13 ng/ml) were 19.5, 46.4, 15.1, 1.2, 0.4, and 12.7% respectively. GDM was found in 18.4% women. The prevalence of GDM was higher in overweight women (28.1%) than underweight (16.7%) and normal weight women (16.0%: p < 0.05). The incidence of low birth weight (LBW) and preterm delivery were 11.6 and 5.8% respectively and was not related to maternal BMI at 6-14 weeks of pregnancy. Maternal height was positively (p = 0.02), and homocysteine was negatively associated with neonatal birth weight (p = 0.02). In addition, the newborn's cord serum folate was positively (p = 0.03) and cord triglyceride was negatively (p = 0.03) associated with neonatal birth weight. CONCLUSION Multiple maternal micronutrient deficiencies were present in early pregnancy. Maternal BMI in early pregnancy was not related to preterm deliveries or LBW. LBW was associated with lower folate, elevated cord triglyceride concentrations of the neonates and mother's height and increase in maternal homocysteine levels. The data has important implications for pregnancy care in Bangladesh and other similar communities.

Abstract
AIM Fatty acid-binding protein-4 (FABP4) is an adipokine associated with obesity and signs of the metabolic syndrome. We aimed to investigate at birth in term neonates with normal and abnormal intrauterine growth concentrations of FABP4 and associate them with various perinatal parameters. METHODS Serum cord blood FABP4 levels were prospectively determined by ELISA in 80 singleton term appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA), intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) neonates. RESULTS Compared to the AGA group, cord blood FABP4 levels were increased in the IUGR and LGA groups. Additionally, they were higher in early-term than full-term neonates. A significant U-shaped correlation was recorded between serum FABP4 levels and birthweight. A significant negative correlation between cord blood FABP4 and gestational age in the whole study population was noted. CONCLUSION Cord blood FABP4 levels were significantly higher at the extremes of foetal growth at term and negatively correlated with gestational age, being increased in early-term versus full-term neonates. Further longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes are required to elucidate FABP4 implication in foetal growth and its association with future adverse cardiometabolic outcomes in the offspring.

Abstract
Spontaneous preterm birth is a serious and common pregnancy complication associated with hormonal dysregulation, infection, inflammation, immunity, rupture of fetal membranes, stress, bleeding, and uterine distention. Heredity is 25-40% and mostly involves the maternal genome, with contribution of the fetal genome. Significant discoveries of candidate genes by genome-wide studies and confirmation in independent replicate populations serve as signposts for further research. The main task is to define the candidate genes, their roles, localization, regulation, and the associated pathways that influence the onset of human labor. Genomic research has identified some candidate genes that involve growth, differentiation, endocrine function, immunity, and other defense functions. For example, selenocysteine-specific elongation factor (EEFSEC) influences synthesis of selenoproteins. WNT4 regulates decidualization, while a heat-shock protein family A (HSP70) member 1 like, HSPAIL, influences expression of glucocorticoid receptor and WNT4. Programming of pregnancy duration starts before pregnancy and during placentation. Future goals are to understand the interactive regulation of the pathways in order to define the clocks that influence the risk of prematurity and the duration of pregnancy. Premature birth has a great impact on the duration and the quality of life. Intensification of focused research on causes, prediction and prevention of prematurity is justified.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to explore developmental outcomes at five years after early-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective data analysis of prospective follow-up of patients of three Dutch centres, who participated in a twenty centre European randomized controlled trial on timing of delivery in early-onset FGR. Developmental outcome of very preterm infants born after extreme FGR is assessed at (corrected) age of five. RESULTS Seventy-four very preterm FGR children underwent follow-up at the age of five. Mean gestational age at birth was 30 weeks and birth weight was 910 g, 7% had a Bayley score <85 at two years. Median five years' FSIQ was 97, 16% had a FSIQ < 85, and 35% had one or more IQ scores <85. Motor score ≤ 7 on movement ABC-II (M-ABC-II-NL) was seen in 38%. Absent or reversed end-diastolic flow, gestational age at delivery, birthweight and neonatal morbidity were related to an FSIQ < 85. Any abnormal IQ scale score was related to birthweight, male sex and severity of FGR, and abnormal motor score to male sex and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). CONCLUSIONS Overall, median cognitive outcome at five years was within normal range, but 35% of the children had any abnormal IQ score at age five, depending on the IQ measure, and motor impairment was seen in 38% of the children. GA at delivery, birthweight, EDF prior to delivery and neonatal morbidity were the most important risk factors for cognitive outcomes.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of sildenafil citrate (SC) to improve placental and fetal growth in a diet-induced rabbit model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Pregnant rabbits were fed either ad libitum (Group C) or restricted to 50% of dietary requirements (Group R) or restricted and treated with SC (Group SC). The treatment with SC improved placental development by increasing vascularity and vessel hypertrophy in the decidua. The assessment of feto-placental haemodynamics showed higher resistance and pulsatility indices at the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in fetuses treated with SC when compared with Group R, which had increased systolic peak and time-averaged mean velocities at the MCA. Furthermore, fetuses in the SC group had significantly higher biparietal and thoracic diameters and longer crown-rump lengths than fetuses in Group R. Hence, the SC group had a reduced IUGR rate and a higher kit size at birth compared with Group R. In conclusion, SC may provide potential benefits in pregnancies with placental insufficiency and IUGR, partially counteracting the negative effects of food restriction on placental development and fetal growth. However, the present study also found evidence of a possible blood overflow in the brain that warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Hypoxia in the embryo is a frequent cause of intra-uterine growth retardation, low birth weight, and multiple organ defects. In the kidney, this can lead to low nephron endowment, predisposing to chronic kidney disease and arterial hypertension. A key component in cellular adaptation to hypoxia is the hypoxia-inducible factor pathway, which is regulated by prolyl-4-hydroxylase domain (PHD) dioxygenases PHD1, PHD2, and PHD3. In the adult kidney, PHD oxygen sensors are differentially expressed in a cell type-dependent manner and control the production of erythropoietin in interstitial cells. However, the role of interstitial cell PHDs in renal development has not been examined. Here we used a genetic approach in mice to interrogate PHD function in FOXD1-expressing stroma during nephrogenesis. We demonstrate that PHD2 and PHD3 are essential for normal kidney development as the combined inactivation of stromal PHD2 and PHD3 resulted in renal failure that was associated with reduced kidney size, decreased numbers of glomeruli, and abnormal postnatal nephron formation. In contrast, nephrogenesis was normal in animals with individual PHD inactivation. We furthermore demonstrate that the defect in nephron formation in PHD2/PHD3 double mutants required intact hypoxia-inducible factor-2 signaling and was dependent on the extent of stromal hypoxia-inducible factor activation. Thus, hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl-4-hydroxylation in renal interstitial cells is critical for normal nephron formation.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether Doppler evaluation at 20-24 weeks of gestation can predict reduced fetal size later in pregnancy or at birth. METHODS Fetal biometry and Doppler velocimetry were performed in 2,986 women with a singleton pregnancy at 20-24 weeks of gestation. Predictive performances of the umbilical artery pulsatility index (UA-PI) or the mean uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) >95th percentile, middle cerebral artery pulsatility index, or cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) <5th percentile for early small for gestational age (SGA; <34 weeks of gestation), late SGA (≥34 weeks of gestation), or SGA at birth (birthweight <10th percentile) were analyzed. RESULTS The prevalence of early SGA, late SGA, and SGA at birth was 1.1, 9.6, and 14.7%, respectively. A CPR <5th percentile had a positive likelihood ratio (LR+) of 8.2 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.7-12.0) for early SGA, a LR+ of 1.6 (95% CI 1.1-1.2) for late SGA, and a LR+ of 1.9 (95% CI 1.4-2.6) for SGA at birth. A UtA-PI >95th percentile was associated with late SGA and SGA at birth, while an UA-PI >95th percentile was associated with early SGA. Associations were higher in fetuses with an estimated fetal weight <10th percentile. CONCLUSION Fetal biometry and Doppler evaluation at 20-24 weeks of gestation can predict early and late SGA as well as SGA at birth.

Abstract
Low‐birthweight (LBW) infants are at an increased risk of stunting and poor linear growth. The risk might be additionally higher in these infants when born to short mothers. However, this hypothesis has been less explored. The objective of this secondary data analysis was to determine the risk of linear growth faltering and difference in linear growth velocity in LBW infants born to short mothers (<150 cm) compared to those born to mothers with height ≥150 cm during the first year of life. This analysis uses data from a community‐based randomized controlled trial of 2,052 hospital‐born term infants with birthweight ≤2,500g from urban low–middle socioeconomic neighbourhoods in Delhi, India. Data on maternal height and infant birth length were available from 1,858 (90.5%) of the infants. Infant anthropometry outcomes were measured at birth, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We found that infants born to short mothers had around twofold higher odds of stunting and lower attained length‐for‐age Z scores compared to infants of mothers with height ≥150 cm, at all ages of assessment. Linear growth velocity was significantly lower in infants of short mothers particularly in the first 6 months of life. We conclude that LBW infants born to short mothers are at a higher risk of stunting and have slower postnatal growth velocity resulting in lower attained length‐for‐age Z scores in infancy. Evidence‐based strategies need to be tested to optimize growth velocity in LBW infants especially those born to short mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to clarify cardiovascular structure and function in small for gestational age (SGA) infants across a range of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) severity. METHODS AND RESULTS This prospective study included 38 SGA infants and 30 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants. SGA infants were subclassified into severe and mild SGA according to the degree of IUGR. Cardiovascular structure and function were evaluated using echocardiography at 1 week of age. Compared with the AGA infants, both the severe and mild SGA infants showed increased left ventricular diastolic dimensions (severe SGA 10.2±2.4, mild SGA 8.2±1.3, and AGA 7.3±0.7 mm/kg, P<0.05 for all) and decreased global longitudinal strain (severe -21.1±1.6, mild -22.5±1.8, and AGA -23.8±1.8%, P<0.05 for all). Severe SGA infants showed a decreased mitral annular early diastolic velocity (severe 5.6±1.4 vs. AGA 7.0±1.3 cm/s, P<0.01) and increased isovolumic relaxation time (severe 51.3±9.2 vs. AGA 42.7±8.2 ms, P<0.01). Weight-adjusted aortic intima-media thickness and arterial wall stiffness were significantly greater in both SGA infant groups. These cardiovascular parameters tended to deteriorate with increasing IUGR severity. CONCLUSIONS SGA infants, including those with mild SGA, showed cardiovascular remodeling and dysfunction, which increased with IUGR severity. (Circ J 2016; 80: 2212-2220).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work aimed to study the effect of uteroplacental circulation restriction on endothelial kidney damage in a fetal rabbit model. METHODS New Zealand rabbits were subjected to 40% to 50% of uteroplacental artery ligation at day 25 of pregnancy. After 5 days, surviving fetuses were harvested by cesarean section. The gene and protein expressions of selected enzymes associated with nitric oxide production and oxidative stress were analyzed in fetal kidney homogenates. RESULTS The placenta weight (6.06 ± 0.27, p < 0.0319) and fetal body (19.90 ± 1.03, p < 0.0001) were significantly reduced in the uteroplacental circulation restriction group. The kidneys from restricted fetuses presented a mild vascular congestion and glomerular capillary congestion, without inflammation or hypertrophy. We found endothelial nitric oxide synthase phosphorylation inhibition (0.23 ± 0.13, p < 0.012) and arginase-2 (0.29 ± 0.14, p < 0.023) protein induction in fetal kidneys of the circulation restriction group. Finally, the kidneys from circulation-restricted fetuses showed increased inducible nitric oxide synthase messenger RNA (mRNA) (2.68 ± 0.24, p < 0.01) and reduced heme oxygenase-1 mRNA (23 ± 1.3, p < 0.003), with increased reactive oxygen species (1.69 ± 0.09, p < 0.001) and nitrotyrosine protein (1.74 ± 0.28, p < 0.003) levels, without changes in Nox mRNA. CONCLUSION We describe significant deregulation of vascular activity and oxidative damage in kidneys of fetal rabbits that have been exposed to restriction of the uterine circulation. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed brain metabolite levels by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in 1-year-old infants born small at term, as compared with infants born appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and their association with neurodevelopment at 2 years of age. STUDY DESIGN A total of 40 infants born small (birthweight <10th centile for gestational age) and 30 AGA infants underwent brain MRS at age 1 year on a 3-T scanner. Small-born infants were subclassified as late intrauterine growth restriction or as small for gestational age, based on the presence or absence of prenatal Doppler and birthweight predictors of an adverse perinatal outcome, respectively. Single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) data were acquired from the frontal lobe at short echo time. Neurodevelopment was evaluated at 2 years of age using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition, assessing cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional, and adaptive behavior scales. RESULTS As compared with AGA controls, infants born small showed significantly higher levels of glutamate and total N-acetylaspartate (NAAt) to creatine (Cr) ratio at age 1 year, and lower Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition scores at 2 years. The subgroup with late intrauterine growth restriction further showed lower estimated glutathione levels at age 1 year. Significant correlations were observed for estimated glutathione levels with adaptive scores, and for myo-inositol with language scores. Significant associations were also noticed for NAA/Cr with cognitive scores, and for glutamate/Cr with motor scores. CONCLUSION Infants born small show brain metabolite differences at 1 year of age, which are correlated with later neurodevelopment. These results support further research on MRS to develop imaging biomarkers of abnormal neurodevelopment.

Abstract
Malnutrition during pregnancy causes intrauterine growth restriction and long-term changes in the offspring's physiology and metabolism. To explore molecular mechanisms by which the intrauterine environment conveys programming in fetal kidneys, an organ known to undergo substantial changes in many animal models of late gestational undernutrition, we used a microswine model of maternal protein restriction (MPR) in which sows were exposed to isocaloric low protein (LP) diet during late gestation/early lactation to encompass the bulk of nephrogenesis. To define general v. model-specific effects, we also used a sheep model of placental insufficiency. In kidneys from near-term fetal and neonatal microswine LP offspring, per cell levels of total RNA, poly(A)+ mRNA and transcripts of several randomly chosen housekeeping genes were significantly reduced compared to controls. Microarray analysis revealed only a few MPR-resistant genes that escape such downregulation. The ratio of histone modifications H3K4m3/H3K9m3 (active/silenced) was reduced at promoters of downregulated but not MPR-resistant genes suggesting that transcriptional suppression is the point of control. In juvenile offspring, on a normal diet from weaning, cellular RNA levels and histone mark patterns were recovered to near control levels, indicating that global repression of transcription is dependent on ongoing MPR. Importantly, cellular RNA content was also reduced in ovine fetal kidneys during placental insufficiency. These studies show that global repression of transcription may be a universal consequence of a poor intrauterine environment that contributes to fetal restriction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intra-uterine growth-restricted (IUGR) fetuses are prone to hypoxic changes in the brain and neurodevelopmental sequelae in later life. Chronic hypoxaemia may also lead to polycythaemia in the fetal and neonatal period. AIM To evaluate venous haematocrit and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in term IUGR neonates in the immediate postnatal period. METHODS This was a prospective observational study of 54 clinically healthy term IUGR neonates as cases and 50 term, appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA), healthy neonates as controls. IUGR was defined as birthweight <10th per centile for gestational age. Neonates with perinatal asphyxia, sepsis and other systemic diseases were excluded. Resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI), peak systolic velocity (PSV) and vascular diameter were measured in the internal carotid, vertebral and middle cerebral arteries by transcranial colour Doppler ultrasound between 48 and 72 hours of life, along with the estimation of venous haematocrit. Neonates were observed for development of any complications until discharge and followed up clinically and radiologically for a minimum 6 months. RESULTS Significantly higher resistance (RI and PI) and lower PSV was recorded in all the cerebral arteries of the IUGR than the AGA group whereas no difference was observed in vascular diameters. Mean haematocrit was significantly higher in the IUGR than in the AGA group [55·7 (4·22) vs 45·1 (2·79) g/dl]. Haematocrit was positively correlated with RI and PI, and negatively correlated with PSV. After discharge, three infants in the IUGR group showed hypertonia and delayed developmental milestones along with hypoxic changes in MRI of the brain. CONCLUSIONS Compared with their AGA counterparts, higher venous haematocrit and lower CBFV were observed in clinically healthy, term IUGR neonates during the early neonatal period. Delayed developmental milestones and hypoxic changes were detected by MRI in three infants. Since the study was limited by its sample size, larger studies are required to document the clinical significance of decreased CBFV and its usefulness as a marker of poor prognosis for future neurodevelopment.

Abstract
Maternal infection in pregnancy is a known risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcome, and a number of zoonotic pathogens may constitute a risk to pregnant women and their fetuses. With animal contact as a proxy for the risk of zoonotic infection, this study aimed to evaluate pregnancy outcome in women with self-reported occupational or domestic contact with livestock compared to pregnant women without such contact. The Danish National Birth Cohort collected information on pregnancy outcome from 100 418 pregnant women (1996-2002) from which three study populations with occupational and/or domestic exposure to livestock and a reference group of women with no animal contact was sampled. Outcome measures were miscarriage, very preterm birth (before gestational week 32), preterm birth (before 37 gestational weeks), small for gestational age (SGA), and perinatal death. Adverse reproductive outcomes were assessed in four different exposure groups of women with occupational or domestic exposure to livestock with no association found between exposure to livestock and miscarriage, preterm birth, SGA or perinatal death. These findings should diminish general occupational health concerns for pregnant women with exposures to a range of different farm animals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obstructive sleep apnea, a breathing disorder caused by the repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep, results in a state of chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). Although the etiology and consequences of CIH are extensively investigated in the adult, the developmental ramifications of this disease process are unknown. DESIGN This study was done to investigate the effect of CIH during gestation on offspring development. Pregnant female Spraque-Dawley rats were exposed to daily CIH throughout the gestational period. RESULTS Postnatal day-1 offspring from CIH mothers were asymmetrically growth restricted, with decreased body weights and elevated brain-weight:liver-weight ratios. Furthermore, CIH newborns had elevated heart- and brain-weight:body weight ratios, and decreased liver-weight:body weight ratios. By adulthood, body weights of growth restricted offspring were significantly greater, as were the liver-weight:body weight ratios. CIH offspring also had greater body fat deposition, were hyperglycemic and had elevated plasma levels of insulin during development into adults. CONCLUSION These data suggest that alteration of the maternal intrauterine environment by gestational CIH effects the long-term development of the offspring and increases the risk of the offspring to metabolic diseases in adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affects 5-10% of all newborns and is associated with increased risk of memory, attention and anxiety problems in late childhood and adolescence. The neurostructural correlates of long-term abnormal neurodevelopment associated with IUGR are unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive description of the long-term functional and neurostructural correlates of abnormal neurodevelopment associated with IUGR in a near-term rabbit model (delivered at 30 days of gestation) and evaluate the development of quantitative imaging biomarkers of abnormal neurodevelopment based on diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters and connectivity. METHODOLOGY At +70 postnatal days, 10 cases and 11 controls were functionally evaluated with the Open Field Behavioral Test which evaluates anxiety and attention and the Object Recognition Task that evaluates short-term memory and attention. Subsequently, brains were collected, fixed and a high resolution MRI was performed. Differences in diffusion parameters were analyzed by means of voxel-based and connectivity analysis measuring the number of fibers reconstructed within anxiety, attention and short-term memory networks over the total fibers. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The results of the neurobehavioral and cognitive assessment showed a significant higher degree of anxiety, attention and memory problems in cases compared to controls in most of the variables explored. Voxel-based analysis (VBA) revealed significant differences between groups in multiple brain regions mainly in grey matter structures, whereas connectivity analysis demonstrated lower ratios of fibers within the networks in cases, reaching the statistical significance only in the left hemisphere for both networks. Finally, VBA and connectivity results were also correlated with functional outcome. CONCLUSIONS The rabbit model used reproduced long-term functional impairments and their neurostructural correlates of abnormal neurodevelopment associated with IUGR. The description of the pattern of microstructural changes underlying functional defects may help to develop biomarkers based in diffusion MRI and connectivity analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased birth weight (BW) is associated with later psychosis, but the sources of decreased BW for those at risk for psychosis remain unclear. AIM To determine whether fetal exposure to influenza and/or hypoxia accounts for BW decreases among psychotic cases and controls. METHOD Subjects were 111 cases diagnosed with schizophrenia or affective psychosis and 333 matched controls from the Collaborative Perinatal Project. Psychiatric diagnoses were ascertained from medical records. Influenza and hypoxia were determined from maternal and cord sera collected at birth. RESULTS Cases exposed to severe fetal hypoxia or influenza had significantly lower BW compared with unexposed cases and controls, regardless of exposure status. No significant differences in BW were observed among controls based on exposure status. CONCLUSIONS Decreased BW appears to be a risk factor for psychosis only in the presence of other teratogens. Liability to psychosis likely renders fetuses vulnerable to decreased fetal growth in response to hypoxia and influenza.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to show differences of maternal serum sP-selectin levels in pregnancies complicated by intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR) in the course of preeclampsia and to compare the results with normotensive pregnant women with isolated IUGR. These studies were also conducted on preeclamptic pregnancies with appropriate-for-gestational-age weight infants and on the control normotensive pregnant women. Material/Methods The study was carried out on 55 patients with pregnancy complicated by fetal growth restriction in the course of preeclampsia, 70 normotensive patients with pregnancies complicated by isolated IUGR, 39 preeclamptic patients with appropriate-for-gestational-age weight fetuses and 54 healthy normotensive pregnant patients with normal fetal growth. Maternal serum levels of sP-selectin were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Levels of sP-selectin were higher in women with pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia with and without IUGR; whereas, in the group of normotensive pregnant women with isolated fetal growth restriction, serum sP-selectin levels tended to be lower than in the control subjects, but this difference was not statistically significant. The mean values were 192.05±70.96 ng/mL in the IUGR group, 293.18±222.92 ng/mL in the PI group, 379.78±353.13 ng/mL in the P group and 227.96±134.04 ng/mL in the healthy controls (p<0.001*). Conclusions Our findings may suggest that the elevated level of the soluble P-selectin is associated with preeclampsia, and that it may confirm the presence of platelet and endothelial activation, the presence of the hypercoagulant state and may be due to the systemic inflammatory response in this serious pregnancy disorder.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the effect of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) on fetal kidneys. The IUGR was induced by uteroplacental vessels ligature in a model of pregnant rabbit. We centralized the study in the gene expression of essential proteins for fetal kidney development and kidney protection against hypoxia, osmotic stress, and kidney injury. The gene expression of HIF-1α, NFAT5, IL-1β, NGAL, and ATM were studied by qRT-PCR and Western blot in kidneys from control and IUGR fetuses. Experimental IUGR fetuses were significantly smaller than the control animals (39 vs. 48 g, p<0.05). The number of glomeruli was decreased in IUGR kidneys, without morphological alterations. IUGR increased the gene expression of HIF-1α, NFAT5, IL-1β, NGAL, and ATM (p<0.05) in kidneys of fetuses undergoing IUGR, suggesting that fetal blood flow restriction produce alterations in gene expression in fetal kidneys.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gestational age (GA) is one of the most important obstetric factors and prediction of date of delivery is usually based on ultrasonographic fetal measurements. Our aim was to determine whether applying three different dating formulae to a cohort of extremely preterm infants influenced the estimation of their GA. METHODS This was a study of 513 infants delivered before 27 gestational weeks, included in a Swedish national population study (EXPRESS), with information available on mid-trimester ultrasonographically measured biparietal diameter and femur length. We applied using these parameters three dating formulae, the Persson & Weldner formula, commonly used in Sweden, the Hadlock formula and the Mul formula, and compared their GA estimates to the clinically reported GA (recorded at delivery) and the last menstrual period (LMP)-based GA. RESULTS The mean reported GA was 173.2 days, corresponding well to the GA according to the Persson & Weldner dating formula (173.3). The mean GA according to LMP, the Hadlock formula and the Mul formula were 176.8, 175.3 and 175.6 days, respectively. The Hadlock and Mul GA estimates differed significantly from that based on the Persson & Weldner formula (both P-values < 10(-6)). Among 68 pregnancies with a reported duration of 22 weeks, 33 (49%) had a duration of 23 weeks or more when GA was calculated according to LMP and 22 (32%) when GA was calculated according to the Hadlock formula. CONCLUSION Estimated GA among infants delivered before 27 gestational weeks varied significantly depending on the dating formula used to calculate the estimated date of delivery; this might influence the clinical management of extremely preterm fetuses and infants.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Epidemiological and animal studies have demonstrated a close link between maternal nutrition and chronic metabolic disease in children and adults. Compelling experimental results also indicate that adverse effects of intrauterine growth restriction on offspring can be carried forward to subsequent generations through covalent modifications of DNA and core histones. RECENT ADVANCES DNA methylation is catalyzed by S-adenosylmethionine-dependent DNA methyltransferases. Methylation, demethylation, acetylation, and deacetylation of histone proteins are performed by histone methyltransferase, histone demethylase, histone acetyltransferase, and histone deacetyltransferase, respectively. Histone activities are also influenced by phosphorylation, ubiquitination, ADP-ribosylation, sumoylation, and glycosylation. Metabolism of amino acids (glycine, histidine, methionine, and serine) and vitamins (B6, B12, and folate) plays a key role in provision of methyl donors for DNA and protein methylation. CRITICAL ISSUES Disruption of epigenetic mechanisms can result in oxidative stress, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and vascular dysfunction in animals and humans. Despite a recognized role for epigenetics in fetal programming of metabolic syndrome, research on therapies is still in its infancy. Possible interventions include: 1) inhibition of DNA methylation, histone deacetylation, and microRNA expression; 2) targeting epigenetically disturbed metabolic pathways; and 3) dietary supplementation with functional amino acids, vitamins, and phytochemicals. FUTURE DIRECTIONS Much work is needed with animal models to understand the basic mechanisms responsible for the roles of specific nutrients in fetal and neonatal programming. Such new knowledge is crucial to design effective therapeutic strategies for preventing and treating metabolic abnormalities in offspring born to mothers with a previous experience of malnutrition.

Abstract
We have previously shown that adult offspring exposed to a prenatal hypoxic insult leading to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are more susceptible to cardiovascular pathologies. Our objectives were to evaluate the interaction between hypoxia-induced IUGR and postnatal diet in the early development of cardiovascular pathologies. Furthermore, we sought to determine whether the postnatal administration of resveratrol could prevent the development of cardiovascular disorders associated with hypoxia-induced IUGR. On day 15 of pregnancy, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to hypoxia (11.5% oxygen), to induce IUGR, or normal oxygen (control) groups. For study A, male offspring (3 wk of age) were randomly assigned a low-fat (LF, <10% fat) or a high-fat (HF, 45% fat) diet. For study B, offspring were randomized to either HF or HF+resveratrol diets. After 9 wk, cardiac and vascular functions were evaluated. Prenatal hypoxia and HF diet were associated with an increased myocardial susceptibility to ischemia. Blood pressure, in vivo cardiac function, and ex vivo vascular function were not different among experimental groups; however, hypoxia-induced IUGR offspring had lower resting heart rates. Our results suggest that prenatal insults can enhance the susceptibility to a second hit such as myocardial ischemia, and that this phenomenon is exacerbated, in the early stages of life by nutritional stressors such as a HF diet. Supplementing HF diets with resveratrol improved cardiac tolerance to ischemia in offspring born IUGR but not in controls. Thus we conclude that the additive effect of prenatal (hypoxia-induced IUGR) and postnatal (HF diet) factors can lead to the earlier development of cardiovascular pathology in rats, and postnatal resveratrol supplementation prevented the deleterious cardiovascular effects of HF diet in offspring exposed to prenatal hypoxia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test the hypothesis that earlier delivery may be warranted to improve neonatal outcome of fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with abnormal Doppler parameters. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of 110 fetuses with an antenatal diagnosis of IUGR due to placental insufficiency which had a very low birth weight (< 1500 g), delivered at the Department of Fetomaternal Medicine of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, between January 1999 and July 2009. Doppler results before delivery were classified as follows: Group 1: abnormal umbilical artery (UA) pulsatility index (PI) more than 2 SD above the mean for normal reference data, or absent UA end-diastolic flow, both with normal middle cerebral artery (MCA) PI (mean ± 2 SD); Group 2: abnormal UA-PI > mean + 2 SD, or absent or reversed UA end-diastolic flow, with abnormal MCA-PI (< mean - 2 SD) and normal ductus venosus (DV) PI (mean ± 2 SD); Group 3: absent or reversed UA end-diastolic flow, with abnormal MCA-PI (< mean - 2 SD) and abnormal DV-PI (> mean + 2 SD) and/or absent or reversed end-diastolic DV flow. Pregnancy outcome was analyzed according to Doppler results. RESULTS Due to very poor prognosis, 19 fetuses underwent expectant management and died in utero. These were excluded from further analyses. Of the remaining 91 cases, 17 were in Doppler Group 1, 44 in Group 2 and 30 in Group 3. Within 4 weeks after delivery, 0/17 (0%) infants in Group 1 died, 2/44 (4.5%) infants in Group 2 died and 7/30 (23.3%) infants in Group 3 died (P = 0.019). None of the 42 Group 2 cases that delivered at or after 28 completed gestational weeks died within 4 weeks after delivery, in contrast to 4/20 (20.0%) Group 3 cases (P = 0.009). In comparison, among infants delivered before 27 completed gestational weeks, 2/2 (100%) Group 2 cases died and 3/10 (30.0%) Group 3 cases died; P = 0.152). CONCLUSIONS Doppler examinations are highly predictive in assessing the outcome of IUGR fetuses. From 28 completed gestational weeks, early delivery before the onset of fetal cardiac decompensation might be beneficial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the maternal serum of soluble human leukocyte antigen-G (sHLA-G) levels in pregnant women with an isolated intrauterine growth restricted foetus (IUGR) and in preeclamptic pregnancies with and without IUGR. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was conducted on 31 normotensive patients with pregnancy complicated by IUGR, 17 preeclamptic patients with appropriate-for-gestational-age foetal intrauterine growth, 21 with preeclampsia complicated by IUGR, and 32 healthy pregnant controls. Maternal serum sHLA-G levels were calculated using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Maternal serum sHLA-G levels tended to be higher in both groups of preeclamptic patients, and were highest in patients with IUGR in the course of severe preeclampsia. Lower serum levels of sHLA-G were observed in the group of normotensive pregnant women with an intrauterine growth restricted foetus, but these differences were not statistically significant. The mean values were 22.759±14.151units/mL in the IUGR group, 25.948±18.888units/mL in preeclamptic patients with normal intrauterine foetal growth, 31.646±27.576units/mL in preeclamptic pregnant women with IUGR, and 24.178±24.828units/mL in the healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the increased levels of sHLA-G in the maternal serum may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, especially in preeclampsia complicated by intrauterine foetal growth restriction. These associations may offer a better insight into the etiology and pathogenesis of preeclampsia with and without IUGR. It seems that sHLA-G does not play a clinically significant role in the pathogenesis of isolated intrauterine foetal growth restriction in normotensive pregnancies.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) due to placental insufficiency affects 5-10% of all pregnancies and it is associated with a wide range of short- and long-term neurodevelopmental disorders. Prediction of neurodevelopmental outcomes in IUGR is among the clinical challenges of modern fetal medicine and pediatrics. In recent years several studies have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to demonstrate differences in brain structure in IUGR subjects, but the ability to use MRI for individual predictive purposes in IUGR is limited. Recent research suggests that MRI in vivo access to brain connectivity might have the potential to help understanding cognitive and neurodevelopment processes. Specifically, MRI based connectomics is an emerging approach to extract information from MRI data that exhaustively maps inter-regional connectivity within the brain to build a graph model of its neural circuitry known as brain network. In the present study we used diffusion MRI based connectomics to obtain structural brain networks of a prospective cohort of one year old infants (32 controls and 24 IUGR) and analyze the existence of quantifiable brain reorganization of white matter circuitry in IUGR group by means of global and regional graph theory features of brain networks. Based on global and regional analyses of the brain network topology we demonstrated brain reorganization in IUGR infants at one year of age. Specifically, IUGR infants presented decreased global and local weighted efficiency, and a pattern of altered regional graph theory features. By means of binomial logistic regression, we also demonstrated that connectivity measures were associated with abnormal performance in later neurodevelopmental outcome as measured by Bayley Scale for Infant and Toddler Development, Third edition (BSID-III) at two years of age. These findings show the potential of diffusion MRI based connectomics and graph theory based network characteristics for estimating differences in the architecture of neural circuitry and developing imaging biomarkers of poor neurodevelopment outcome in infants with prenatal diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of present study was to assess the maternal serum levels and clinical significance of interleukin-18 (IL-18) in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and/or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was carried out on 30 patients with pregnancy complicated by severe preeclampsia (15 patients with IUGR and 15 with appropriate-for-gestational-age weight fetuses), 11 normotensive pregnant patients with pregnancy complicated by isolated IUGR and 32 healthy normotensive women with uncomplicated pregnancies. The interleukin-18 levels were determined using an ELISA assay. RESULTS Decreased levels of maternal serum IL-18 in preeclamptic patients with and without IUGR were observed. Contrary to the preeclamptic women, no difference was found in the maternal serum levels of IL-18 in normotensive patients with pregnancies complicated by isolated fetal growth restriction. These levels were the same as observed in the healthy controls. The mean values of maternal serum IL-18 were 219.118±180.079pg/mL in the PRE group, 438.170±229.657pg/mL in the group of women with isolated IUGR, and 457.053±528.142pg/mL in the control group. The levels of maternal serum IL-18 were similar in both study preeclamptic subgroups. The mean values of IL-18 were 204.823±188.171pg/mL in the group PI and 233.414±176.995pg/mL in the P group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that decreased levels of IL-18 in maternal serum play a significant role in etiology and pathogenesis of preeclampsia. But normotensive pregnancies complicated by isolated IUGR are not associated with the altered interleukin 18 levels in maternal serum.
